The Pull Bag
January 2015 Comic Solicitations with Industry Guests

About this Episode
Welcome to The Pole Bag. Join us as we dig out
our latest comics and discuss them with a rotating
panel of the GCRN crew. So sit back and enjoy
this week's Pole Bag. Hello and welcome to The
Pole Bag. Ladies and gentlemen, it is year three
of the Pole Bag. I am your host TFJ1Mike. And
this year I wanted to do something for the previews,
for the solicitations, to kind of talk about
some comic news. And I know we do this generally
in the After Dark as far as general comic discussions,
but here I want to highlight for you, the listeners,
what's out now, and for you to be able to go
get it. So, little disclaimer, this episode's
a bit long. I talk with Nicole Halestorm for
the IDW, publishing solicits. The Weird Science
of DC Comics blog guys, Jim and Eric for the
DC solicits, Jeremy Fine for the Image Comics
solicits, and JT from Saskatoon for the Marvel
solicits. This episode is the January solicitations
episode. This is all stuff that is coming out
or came out in January. Or some of it might be
advanced solicitations like for trades and hardcovers
and special things like that. This episode is
going to run a little long. I want to really
try to shorten these up a little bit, but you
know we get to talk and we get on some tangents
Hopefully everyone will have fun Please comment
on the post and let me know what you think and
if there's anything about these types of episodes
We're calling them profiling previews That you
think we should change or improve on. Thank you
very much Here's the episode starting with IDW
going into DC image and then Marvel Alright folks,
it is time to talk about the IDW January solicitations.
These are books that were released in January
2015 from IDW Publishing. Joining me for the
IDW solicits is none other than the Hailstorm
herself. Because let's face it, we all know she
is the eye of a lot of storms around here. I
know, right? We have Nicole, aka Beatlesdiva,
hello. I guess I'll say hi. So yes, as I said
in the intro to this very first profiling previews
episode here in the pull bag, it's going to be
myself and various others on the various companies.
I pretty much limited it to four companies. I
do have a section for like Boom Studios and various
other publishers, but it's pretty much profiling
previews here in the pull bag for year three
is pretty much going to be IDW, Image, DC, and
Marvel. Because let's face it, those are the
big four. I guess you could count Dark Horse,
but Dark Horse doesn't do digital comics outside
of their own website. Valiant's been doing some
good stuff too, though, but they're fairly small
compared to, you know. Yeah. So we, and this
link will be in the podcast post, so people can
go to, I'm getting this from comicbookresources
.com. The link for these solicitations will be
in that post so you guys can get that there.
The first thing from IDW that came out in January
2015 that we're going to talk about is Zombies
versus Robots number one. I can't even get out
the number one after that. The writers are Chris
Rial, Steve Niles, Art is done by Anthony. I
see you do. There you go. There you go Ashley
would and Val Marek That's what it looks like
to me. Okay. Yeah Ashley what is on color first
ever ongoing zombies versus robot series bringing
you new robots a revived a renewed zombie threat
new human survivors in an all -new world ready
for taking from one of the more from One or more
of these factions part one of inherit the earth
and the orphans start here done done done Okay,
and I picked this up. I haven't been able to
read it yet, but the artwork is awesome Plus
it's zombies and robots What's not to love on
it? Absolutely. There's two things. I love reading
about it's robots and zombies and now I got into
one Yes Yeah, this looks very interesting for
people like you who are into zombies. Wait, wait,
wait! What does that mean? Yeah, people like
you who are into zombies and robots, whereas
I could give a crap less about zombies. I don't
mind robots, I like robots, but zombies are just
not my thing. But no, it does look very... If
you say that out loud, you might be their first
victim. I, you know, I've been accused of worse
things, so there's that. And actually, they're
putting out a bunch of things to kick this series
off. They've got the issue one. They've also
got solicited here, Zombies vs. Robots, 100 Penny
Press, already. So there's that, and then they
also list Zombies vs. Robots, War Book, Omnibus.
The war book omnibus is 30 bucks for 440 pages
The the solicit on the war book says zombies
robots war throw in some Amazons and you've got
everything you need to know Collects all of the
series by co -creators Chris Rial and Ashley
would plus Adventure and under city also includes
the short pro story meaner than a junkyard dog.
So wait a second here. If they're just coming
out with the first issue and then they have this.
Now I assume this is gonna be an I assume that
this solicitation for the war book here is an
advanced solicitation. I don't think that's out.
Yeah. the Amazon Amazon in the solicit so yeah
let's see what it says here I don't searching
and it's on pre -order will be oh wait says the
pre -order is available February 24th Okay, so
it the okay people the war book omnibus is An
advanced solicitation. I was gonna say there's
no way that they would do something like this
With them just starting the series Yeah So there
is that all right moving on we've got Millennium
number one of five written by Joe Harris art
by Colin Lorimer and the cover is or colors I
guess is going to be Mentioned three fifteen
years ago the end of the world and anticipated
Millennium event was avoided thanks to the efforts
of Frank Black and FBI agents Fox Mulder and
Dana Scully or was it Frank's psychic gifts have
been showing him that evil has continued to grow
Unabated in the world he is trying his best to
ignore it, but as soon as the research into the
Millennium group their quest to find Frank's
daughter Jordan will put him into the fray once
again whether he likes it or not I I think I
saw like the first episode of the Millennium
TV series and then I just kind of drifted away
I totally forgot it was a TV series and that
tells you something yeah you know yeah but these
covers are beautiful Yeah, the covers look amazing.
Oh boy. I had a crush on Fox Molder for a long
time. Well, watch him in return to me with Mini
Driver and you'll forget all about that. I kind
of like that show. Thank you. California Cation
is the one that's like, oh, you're no Fox Molder.
What happened? What happened, Fox? So that is
currently out from IDW also out now from IDW
in January where they launched their next new
franchise title Galaxy quest the journey continues
number 104 for a miniseries It is gonna be written
by Eric Burnham and the art is done by nacho
once upon a time a troupe of has -been actors
that starred in an old sci -fi show were enlisted
by an alien race to save them from an intergalactic
tyrant despite being way out of their depth and
cast somehow managed to save The cast somehow
managed to save the aliens and stay alive, but
their actions in outer space may have had dire
consequences for another world. Join us in January
as the cast of Galaxy Quest returns for another
bombastic journey into space. I'm excited. Yes.
You know when I saw the galaxy quest movie and
looking back on it now after I've seen another
certain galaxy questing film I'm like yeah Tim
Allen's character could really be the father
of Chris Pratt You want to know if there's one
thing guardians the galaxy was missing It was
Sigourney Weaver. Ain't that the truth. And this
does actually pick up where the movie left off.
So this isn't just like, you know, I don't want
to say a cash grab because I don't think I, everything
that IDW does pretty much has a purpose behind
it for fans of whatever franchise it might be.
And let's face it the movie itself like like
it says it's 15 some odd years old now, so I
mean, it's not a lot of cash to grab Well, the
thing is I mean everyone let's check transformers.
I mean everyone always says that oh, they just
sell the comic books So they can sell toys or
not. The thing is everyone that reads transformer
comics knows that's not well It's somewhat true,
but there's also a really good story behind it
Everyone likes the comics better than the movies
or even the cartoons the comic book fans are
let's continue That's who knows maybe this series
is the same They're not I don't know if they're
gonna be selling galaxy quest stuff, but it's
got a great story Yeah, you never know Alright
up next we're gonna head to the world of GI Joe.
I thought this is interesting for me I might
end up picking this one up. I might pick it up
in trade, but it's a GI Joe snake eyes agent
of Cobra number one of five is written by Mike
costa with art by Palo villain annual I probably
destroyed that name, but yeah Yeah Uh, Destro,
one of - Lenny, Lenny, well, Val? Let me get
it here. Valinelli, there we go. Valinelli, there
you go. Or Villinelli, yeah, that sounds better.
Villinelli, okay, there we go. I apologize again.
He's some sort of villain people. That is a cool
ass name, though. My gosh, that's an awesome
ass name. Destro, one of Cobra's top operatives
has been captured as the - Metal Mast Maverick
gets transferred into a new prison, a prison
break he's instigated by none other than Snake
Eyes? With Destro free and Snake Eyes under Cobras
control, a mission that will rock the world of
G .I. Joe begins. This sounds very interesting
to me. Because it's just like, Snake Eyes, wait,
he's supposed to be the good guy. What happened?
Yep. He got sick of Duke's crap. Scarlet is being
a total twat. He's like, I can't take it anymore.
We're to the other side. I don't know. I don't
know. Just kidding. Scarlet has a temper. I don't
blame him. Don't blame him. Oh my god, I can
see myself getting into this as a new series,
and it does say one of five, so it's only gonna
be a miniseries, which is great, and IDW does
the miniseries very, very well for the most part.
Dexter's lab, notwithstanding. But yeah, no,
I mean, for me, someone who is... At best a casual
GI Joe fan. This looks really interesting The
only thing that kind of has me worried is the
fact that it's Costa writing it and I've heard
nothing but bad stuff about him actually Costa
would he did transformers? No, no, but his GI
Joe stuff is fairly good. I will I read Joe for
the longest time Spoiler alert people would they
replaced? Cobra Commander, it kind of did go
downhill a little bit, and well, I just had to
drop some things, and that was one of the things
that got dropped. But from when I read him in
G .I. Joe, it was good. All right. He knows how
to just people. He just doesn't know how to do
robots. Man, that's so hilarious. All right.
Now, people, we get into more giant robots with
Transformers punishment. Written by Captain Continuity
himself, Mr. John Barber, art and color done
by Livio Rivendeli. Optimus Prime returns to
Cybertron and someone is killing Decepticons.
Prime teams up with Windblade to uncover the
identity of the vigilante, but the answers will
uncover darker secrets than anyone expected.
Dun dun dun. Now, this is a larger comic. It's
like a one -shot, but it was made from the motion
comic that was free with Windows 8. Now, I read
this months ago, and I've had two people to talk
about this. Finally, it's coming onto paper form.
People, if you haven't read Transformers forever
because you thought, oh, Prime's... This is a
prime. Go pick this up. This is the prime that
we've been wanting for years. Have you read this
yet, Mike? No, I have not yet. Okay. I am so
far behind in Transformers stuff. Okay, that's
fine. Just pick this up. This right here is the...
No, this is a high bar. This is the best thing
John Barber's ever wrote. Wow. I will say that.
Because he brings back... the prime I grew up
with, the prime that I know and love. It's prime
like you remember him, the nostalgia. It is not
emo prime, not take your face prime. It's optimist
at his best being optimist. And it's a good like
murder mystery. People you gotta go. I'm not
kidding. This is what the best things I read
all last year Unfortunately, like I said, it
was a motion comment that hardly anyone read
but the people that I did read it with we sat
for hours talking about it I don't I don't think
I think it's a made fire that came out with this
originally I don't think they'll ever do one
of those deals again because It was limited as
you said to Windows 8 users and the windows 8
platform and if you didn't have windows 8 or
whatever you know on pc or device or whatever
you're basically screwed out of everything um
now this does say on here uh the stage is set
for combiner wars optimus prime and wind blade
on the hunt for a killer will the autobots stand
up when decepticon lives decepticon's lives are
at stake dun dun dun Okay, also out in January.
Like I said, go read it. Really, people, if you
buy one comic this month, it better be that.
Again, John Barber's best. Prove me wrong. uh...
also from the world of transformers we have transformers
the book formally known as robots in disguise
number thirty seven days of deception barbara
griffith uh... barbara and griffith uh... on
the creative team here the onyx protocol as prowl
confronts spike over the humans betrayal of the
mystery of gb black rock and the onyx interface
deepens, meanwhile Tokyo becomes a battleground
as RC faces the Constructicons and Galvatron.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am so far behind on both
of the Transformers ongoings. I... Did you call
me a sinner? Yes. I just can't get into them.
I don't know what it is. It's like after Dark
Cybertron something is just... sucked the life
out of the enjoyment for me from reading the
book. I don't know what it is. You need to read
this one because it has a little bit of Thundercracker
in it. Oh, Lord. That's the last thing I need.
What? You heard me. Thundercracker and Buster's
the best team up they've had in a long time.
Yeah, when he's not prattling on about his dumbass
play. He's not, though. Oh. I love that cover.
I love that. That was a cracker buster cover.
For the next illicit, it has been dual - It's
a joke, people. It's just a joke that hasn't
even happened yet. for the next solicit people
uh... it was supposed to come out in january
it has not it will be out according to my sources
february fourth 2015 Transformers more than meets
the eye number 37 days of deception Roberts and
Milne on the creative team desperate measures
four million years ago as Cybertron teetered
on the brink of all -out war a group of Autobots
decided it was time to take matters into their
own hands Everyone concerned would be subsequently
agree that this was a very very bad move Again
ever since the whole split like I was like when
we got to issue 33 which we haven't yet in the
pullback coverage but when I got to reading issue
33 of more than meets the eye I was like okay
I get it there was a rift in the timeline and
that became two lost lights and two crews and
two different it's basically you know Bar not
barber. I'm sorry Roberts basically gave us a
Doc Brown scenario here, and it's like okay That's
cool, and ever since then I have just been like
What the fuck is going on? I? Don't I don't I'm
not saying I don't enjoy it anymore I'm just
saying I am so far behind on both these titles
that I have no friggin clue I thought we should
bring this up considering a lot of people might
have missed a boat on this but Transformers animated
the complete All Spark Almanac. If you missed
out on AllSpark Almanac book one and book two
separately, seriously, go pick this up. If you're
into Transformers animated the cartoon series
at all and you want further in depth kind of
thing, it's going to be amazing having this all
as one. Oh, it's I have the two separate volumes
from back in the day, you know. Yeah. It's amazing
work. That team of Bill and Jim, sorry Jim, lost
your day for a second. You did such a great job
putting this together. And so many fun little
Easter eggs. And of course, even have like McFeely
and Vangelis added in there, which is awesome.
And so, yeah, yeah. So well done so well put
together Absolutely and also another one for
you guys that might have missed out on it that
didn't get it singly or didn't get the actual
Trade paperback version of it. They are releasing
transformers dark Cybertron and hardcover for
50 bucks I don't know if I can recommend it but
I'll recommend the the actual trade paper back
more than the hardcover, because it doesn't seem
like from the solicitation that there's anything
new or different in the hardcover. I'm not sure
if there is. No, it doesn't say that there's
any... I just like hardcovers because they last
longer. True. Next, before we jump off the Cybertronian
train ride here, we have... Something that Mikey
just doesn't get. Mikey was hurt by Decepticon
lately, so his joy is running low. We have Angry
Birds Transformers number three of four written
by John Barber with art by Marcelo Ferreira.
Rampage when the Angry Birds precious eggs become
leg -having weapon -bearing Rampaging eggs of
mass destruction the auto birds must team up
with the Deceptahogs to save Piggy Island How
much more mixed up can this mashup possibly get?
This is just like I told people it's Angry Birds
versus Transformers that title alone should let
you know it's not Shakespeare. It's just fun,
and it really is. There's so many hidden little
gems in this series. It makes me laugh. It does.
Like I said, the last issue I reviewed, I gave
it a four and a half out of five stars. I had
so much fun with it. I did. There you go. That's
all right. Alright folks this might shock some
people because everybody always asks me, you
know, oh you've done transformers Oh, you've
done mask. You've done he man. You're you're
about to do Shira. You've you're gonna do Jim
When are you gonna do a My Little Pony podcast
never? Maybe maybe maybe one day folks. This
is very that category Mikey Come on now. Come
on now. So this is probably about as close as
we're gonna get, folks. My Little Pony, Friendship
is Magic number 27. Are you currently reading
the series or no? I am currently reading it.
I am not caught up, though. How far back are
you? A couple issues behind. Alright. So be warned
there might be spoilers. I'm fine To buy a little
pony Create a creative team on this is Katie
cook on the writing Andy price on art price and
Tony flex or Felice on colors Timberwolves invade
ponyville. They're just the start of the troubles
for our ponies though as many other mystical
creatures emerge from ever free forest. What
could be causing the mass migration and how can
the balance of nature be restored? Dun dun dun.
Pony's have some great adventures and I know
like probably what you're thinking is little
girly and they have real danger. They have real
adventures and it's fun. I mean they use like
Timberwolves. These Timberwolves are not going
to be like your friendly little thing. They will
give you nightmares if you see the picture. What
the? I mean, because I know that the Timberwolves
have been in the cartoon. They're freaky. They
kind of freaked me out when I saw them. I'm like,
what? Yeah, they're not friendly. So this could
be kind of a yeah, I'm excited. Yeah. Okay, my
only my only real problem with ponies is Sometimes
in the cartoon series and in some of the comic
drawings they make them they try to make them
look human in their movements and My logical
brain is telling me No horse or pony should be
able to move the way that so are you talking
about Pinkie Pie? No, I'm not talking about Pinkie
Pie. Because she doesn't have bones. I'm not
talking about Pinkie Pie. I'm talking about the
ponies in general. It's a cartoon. Anyway, I'm
sending you a picture of the Timberwolves. Go
look at the Timberwolves. You can't tell me those
aren't kind of freaky looking. And they are freaky
looking they look like they come from Cybertron
actually. They are actually timber. They're logs
Wolves, you see? Yeah, I got it Look how creepy
they look. You should see how those things move
Alright, are you reading the other series, Friends
Forever? I am. I'm reading everything. What are
you talking about? Who are you talking to? How
long have we known each other? What? Yeah, true.
I should have figured. Jeremy Whitley is the
writer on this one. Agnes Garbowska? Hope I do
that right. And is on art and Amy Meberson is
on colors. When Sweetie Belle gets sick, it's
up to Big Sis Rarity to entertain Bab Seed on
a visit to... ...Main -hattan? Oh, God. Wow.
The only problem is the two seemingly have nothing
in common. Will the two find a way to overcome
their differences and find a way to have fun
in the big city? Oh, Lord. Okay. So the friends
forever, if you guys haven't heard this, it's
kind of like their little spotlight series. What
they do is they team up two ponies or two characters
and they put them in a situation and they work
things out. They have their own little venture
and it's always two different ponies. So this
is the first time that Rarity and Sweetie Belle
get together. Let's see, I'm trying to think,
one time it was Rarity and Pinkie Pie, so yeah,
they switch it up every month. It's a fun little
spotlight series. It's one of those things, if
you're not up to date with the ponies comic book,
you can pick this up, it's one little spotlight,
and you can kind of get to know the characters.
So Friends Forever is kind of like what... new
animated adventures is for Turtles, where it's
a one -shot kind of book each issue. Yeah, okay,
that's cool. That'll work. Also out in January
was My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Volume
6. This collects issues 21 to 24 of the series.
So there's that. And the last one we'll be talking
about. Now I did talk about these with Joe Reed
when we did our Turtles coverage, but I figured
since... you probably read about the turtles
i'm i'm so far behind in turtles though that's
the one that i'm really far behind on how far
behind are you issues early 30 20 27 26 oh my
god you need to catch i know Oh my god, you need
to catch up. Okay, you catch up on Transformers
and Ponies, I'll catch up with you. Well, Ponies,
I won't make any promises, but Transformers,
yeah. Since I've never read the pony books. But
if you're on issue 2728, you're just ending City
Fall, starting in Northampton. Oh my god, that
is so long ago. Don't make me do this. Oh my
god. It's not my fault. So long ago. I have a
big pile of shame, people. A big pile of shame.
See, I've still tried to catch up from when I
was in my accident. Oh, dang. Well, when I was
in my accident, I had over 200 comics to catch
up on. Oh, wow. Yeah, so I'm still trying to...
And turtles was the main thing, so it's just
like... Another big crossover from IDW ended
in January. TMNT Ghostbusters 404 came out. Eric
Burnham, Tom Walts on writing, Dan Shoning on
art and colors. The supernaturally awesome conclusion
to the Blockbuster crossover is here. Ghostly
forces converge on the Ghostbusters headquarters
and the Turtles opportunity to get back home
is fast -windowing. The two teams' last -ditch
efforts may come too late. Dun dun dun. Have
you read this series? I have read the mini -series.
I have read the crossover, yes. Okay. I love
this crossover. Did you enjoy this crossover?
I did. I had a little bit. I had a lot of nitpicks
about the actual Ghostbusters. Since I'm not
reading that series. Oh, okay. It's not the personalities.
It's not the writing. It's the art for me. Like
these, like I can't hear. Bill Murray, I can't
hear Harold Ramis in my head when I read lines
from these. It's just the way they're drawn and
colored. It just doesn't make me think. It doesn't
even make me think of the real Ghostbusters cartoon
series versions either. I do enjoy this. I did
very much enjoy this. Actually, coming up here
in the first week of February, Joe Reed and I
are actually going to review the whole series.
Oh good, that's good. Absolutely. Yeah, so I
think that's going to do it for the IDW portion
of the first profiling previews for January 2015.
Up next is going to be the DC books with myself
and the weird science of DC blog guys, Jim and
Eric. So we'll be back. I was just going to say
something before we leave. If you guys have a
good idea, W suggestions, send them my way. I'm
more than willing to read some stuff. So if you're
enjoying something, let me know. We'll be back
after this. Oh, quiet you. Alright folks first
up we had IDW now we head over to the DC camp
in the January 2015 solicitations for this profiling
previews episode of the pull bag Joining me for
the DC stuff is the weird science of DC guys
Jim and Eric. Hello guys. How are you? I am great.
I'm good as well That's right And yay DC January
2015 now for anyone who went back and listened
to our after dark where we kind of Previewed
the first three weeks of convergence go listen
to that This all happens before the move to LA.
So yes it does So this should be normal stuff
Thank God. Yeah Because let's face it DC is anything
but normal. Yeah, it's getting worse and worse,
too So basically folks what I had Jim and Eric
do is I told them pick out three books or three
titles you want to talk about and make sure that
our listeners check out as they are released.
So one of Eric's choices is the Multiversity
Guidebook number one written by Grant Morrison,
art by Nicola Scott, Gary Frank, Klaus Jansen,
Cameron Stewart, Dan Jergens, Chris Sprouse.
I wonder if he's related to Dylan and Cole. It
might be. Ben Oliver and others. This came out
January 21st. It is 80 pages. It's 799. The guidebook
to the greatest adventure in DC's history is
here, with a detailed concordance featuring each
of the 52 worlds in a multiverse, a complete
history of DC Comics universe -shattering crisis
events, a map of all known existence, and an
action -packed dual adventure starring commande
of Earth -51 alongside the post -apocalyptic
Atomic Knight Batman of Earth -17, and a chibi
Batman of Earth -42, this 80 -page mountain of
multiversity madness cannot be missed. The Multiversity
Guidebook contains everything you ever wanted
to know about DC's parallel worlds and their
superheroic inhabitants. Meet the agents of wonder,
the Light Brigade, the Super Americans, Wow.
And The Love Syndicate, Meet the Accelerated
Man, AquaFlash, Biomac, and more. Overflowing
with today's top artists and completely written
by Grant Morrison himself, readers of the DC
Universe can't afford to pass up this oversized
sixth chapter of Multiversity. Why did you choose
this, Eric? And did you pick this up, or are
you going to pick this up? Oh, no, I picked this
up. I love lists and getting to see all the worlds
that encompass the DC multiverse, which is a
huge thing for me. Unlike the solicit, you don't
get to meet all of these things. You just have
a page or a half a page where it tells you the
Earth and a little bit like a brief description
about them. But besides being like a guidebook,
it actually had a big story to it as well that
took a lot of the stuff that we've already been
dealing with in Multiversity and kind of tying
it together so we can get ready for our next
leg of the story. So would you say for anyone
that hasn't been picking up Multiversity, would
you say this is a good jumping on point? No,
it's not really a good jumping on point because
it has a lot to do with the other Multiversity
issues. I would get this just for the guidebook.
If you like lists and like to know about the
different worlds like I do, it's a good thing
to have. All right. Awesome. Jim, any interest
in this thing? No. And I'll tell you, that solicit
is long enough for me. That's like a normal size
issue, just the solicit. It was getting me as
my head was spinning. But yeah, I haven't read
it. I haven't read any of the multiversity. That's
Eric's thing. But man. He tries to even tell
me about it, and I'm telling you, I start getting
dizzy, so I gotta sit down every time he does.
It's Grant Morrison, so it's like, everybody
always says he's layered. It is a messed up,
confusing story that you have to read. Like,
each of us, you have to read more than once and
try to get your head wrapped around it. But this
does a pretty good job of just laying it out
for you and tying some other stuff in that you
were thinking about with other books of it. And
I really liked it. Alright folks, you can check
that out now from DC Comics Multiversity Guidebook
number one. Wait, if that says number one, does
that mean there's gonna be a two, three, four,
five, oh my god. No, as of right now it looks
like there's only gonna be a Multiversity number
two. Like each issue is the Multiversity and
then another title number one. So each one is
like that, but it'll go up to, I think there's
three more issues and the last one will just
be the Multiversity number two. Okay. Another
one of Eric's choices is Constantine number 21
written by Ray Fox art by Jeremy Han Covered
by Han for era on sale this came out January
14th It's 299 with legions of parademons on the
attack Constantine forges an alliance with dr.
Fate But as time begins to run out will they
escape earth to or help destroy it? I'm not a
fan of Constantine. I liked him in the DC Universe
Masters crossover, but that's about all I could
handle. So why should we be picking this one
up, Eric? Well, ever since Constantine has been
pushed over to Earth -2, it's this big Earth
-2 tie -in which goes congruently with Earth
-2 and Earth -2 World's End. A lot of people
getting sick of the Earth -2 stuff, but... Ever
since Earth 2, I mean, Constantine's gone to
Earth 2, the stories have become so much better.
Ray Fawkes is writing a really internal story
that just deals with what Constantine is feeling,
and the writing has just gone through the roof
since he's made the jump to Earth 2. Mm -hmm.
Jim, are you reading Constantine? I actually
read this issue. Because Eric had pushed it so
much and I enjoy it. I really like Jeremy Han's
art I'm with you though. I'm not a huge Constantine
fan So when it when I read it though like it's
okay, but if you're not a Constantine fan I don't
know that you'd enjoy this. I Mean, I like like
I said, I enjoyed the character when he was like,
you know trading wenty witty banter with queen
marlena in the dc over mo to cross over but other
than that and don't really care and i haven't
even checked out the tv show yet yeah i i wish
that he eric loves that i've watched the first
two issues and i really enjoyed it but and not
enough for me to keep watching i for me to watch
a weekly show and stick with it it really has
to grab me and that it didn't grab me as much
Alright, Eric's final choice for January releases,
Earth 2, World's End, number 17, written by Daniel
H. Wilson, Marjorie Bennett, and Mike Johnson.
Art by Andy Smith. The cover is by Gilliam March.
It is a 299 book. Earth 2 becomes infected by
the soul of Apocalypse. Can former surgeon Thomas
Wayne and the Batman of Earth 2 find a cure,
or is it already too late? It's so weird to me
that Thomas Wayne is alive. I know it's earth
to people I get it, but it just Boggles my mind.
Well, actually he's not supposed to be he actually
faked his death and came back after Bruce died
in the first issue Yeah, it just that's just
one of those things where Thomas being alive
and Bruce being dead just seems all kinds of
wrong to me Why should people be reading this
one, Eric? Well, the reason everybody should
be reading this because for the past like two
months, this is a weekly book though, but for
like the past two months, Earth -2 has been garbage.
Well, Earth -2 World's end has been garbage.
But this issue seems to be like the light at
the end of the tunnel. This is like a turning
point in the series, it seems like to me, where
things start becoming better and you can actually
get behind reading this book. If you're an Earth
-2 fan, which I am. So that's the main reason
it's on my list, is because I didn't hate this
issue. Jim, any love or hate for World's End?
I'm not a big fan. Because it's a weekly book,
I actually on our site, I do Batman Eternal,
and one weekly book is enough for me, but I do
read this only because... It seemed at first
to be very important to where DC was going with
this and then into Convergence now I kind of
think that it's not as important as I thought
it was supposed to be a big deal So yeah, I tried
to keep up with it. It hasn't been good. Like
Eric said, it's been pretty much garbage and
But this issue is a little better But again as
a whole the the series itself, I'm not a big
fan of All right moving on to Jim's three choices
for January folks out now is Batman number 38
Scott Snyder Greg Capolo With the backup story
by Snyder and tinny in the fourth We have a flash
75 variant cover by Tony s Daniel on this issue,
so that's that's interesting 399 book also DC
will get an extra dollar out of you and give
you a digital copy for $4 .99 we got it not not
today folks but at some point at some point in
the pullback after dark I'm gonna get a bunch
of people on here and bitch about why the hell
DC is charging an extra dollar just to give you
a damn digital code it's ridiculous anyway Yeah.
Endgame, part four, the Joker is back. This time,
no more funny stuff in the backup story. Five
Arkham Asylum escapees share their encounters
with the Joker. This issue also offered as a
combo pack edition with redemption code for a
digital download of this issue. I've made my
opinions known about the Endgame storyline because
it takes place after the end of Eternal. and
Eternal doesn't end until March 2015, I need
to just fast forward to issue 50 of Eternal and
read that and then go back and read this. And
basically, I know, I realize that this Batman
number 38 is a pretty lame choice only because,
you know, it's Batman. That's not a big surprise.
But yeah, I picked it because it is a big story.
Scott Snyder. I love Scott Snyder. I may kind
of get tired of him now and again, but I do like
his run, and this issue itself really ties in
a lot of his whole run in the new 52. Have you
read it, Mike? I've read Court of Owls, I've
read Death of the Family, I've read Zero Year,
and honestly Zero Year is where he lost me. After
Zero Year I was done. I don't care if you bring
the Joker back, I am waiting for the trade on
this storyline. I hear that. Well it is that,
and the Joker is back and the big... The big
pull of this is that the claim or what you, Scott
and I want you to believe is that the Joker has
been immortal. He's been in Gotham and in the
world. He has lived forever. So basically he's
turned him into a character out of I, Vampire
or whatever that other book is that he writes.
Yes, yes. Yeah, American Vampire. Oh, thank you.
Basically they're Batman and the but the reason
I like this this issue itself is not Really because
of the Joker and in fact the Joker is only in
it for a couple panels this one But it is the
new 52 debut of crazy quilt He's in there which
I love but also this is a story that like zero
year which I was not a big fan of too but what
I I did like of it is that Scott Snyder doesn't
write a Batman that is this godlike Batman that
can solve everything and he's having issues and
in this issue in particular He's really struggling
trying to figure out what to do on how to deal
with what's going on in Gotham. He calls Dick
Grayson He's looking for all these he goes to
crazy quilt for help But then things go wrong
and then I know am I allowed to spoil things
here? I don't want to spoil it. Let's not in
case anyone hasn't picked it up yet. I don't
spoil it, but at the end it's a cliffhanger that
actually ties into Scott Snyder's other big stories
in The New 52, which I really loved. It's weird
because Scott Snyder, when you read a Scott Snyder
book to me, a lot of times it starts to become
almost like homework. Because it seems like he's
trying to prove how smart he is and how much
he knows But then when I'm done and think about
it, I love it But in the meantime while I'm reading
it, sometimes I struggle just because I start
to get a little annoyed but I did really enjoy
the cliffhanger in this issue is so good and
Crazy quilt. So those two are the reasons why
I think people should grab it And the next one
Jim chose he chose just to piss me off just because
every time I see this series now I just go Too
much teen egg stop rubbing your hand Gotham Academy
number four Rick written by Betty Becky Clunen,
god I can't even say her name right, and Brendan
Fletcher, art and cover by Carl Kerschel. Now
I know why one of the reasons why you like this
series is because of the art by Carl so I know
that's that's one good thing for it. It is a
$2 .99 book and the only thing the solicitation
says is the hunt for the ghost of Gotham Academy
begins. Yes. I made it through two issues of
this series, folks, and I had to drop it because
it was too much crappy Americanized version of
friggin' Hogwarts. It is. It definitely is. But
I love it. I have my notes here, and I actually
have, in my top five books right now, I have
that written. I love this book. And it is...
I'll tell you, Carl Kersl's art was what initially,
I looked at it and it was just great, but also
I fell in love with the two main characters,
Olive Silverlock and Maps Mizuguchi, that I think
they're great characters. Here's the thing, I'm
45 years old. I'm an old man. I read this book.
I actually am embarrassed that I like it that
much it actually I don't yeah I start thinking
there's something wrong with me, but I'm telling
you the charm of this book And also the other
thing you have to realize is I like this book
seemed to be right before this new turn in DC
to kind of get things more cartoony and more
all ages friendly. This book, I think, does it
right. And it's an adventure story. And like
you said, it is DC's Hogwarts, which I love.
And some people don't like it. I love it. But
also in the story, They throw a lot of Easter
eggs from the DCU the issue After this the number
five actually throws in gray ghost is in it But
they just they kind of hint at them and I just
it's just a charming book that I think it's a
book that anybody could read you can pick it
up if you have kids if you have a Wife who likes
this sort of thing a young girl young boy, whatever.
I think anybody can like it and for me that goes
a long way Eric, please tell me you've your senses
and don't read this stuff Jim has me start reading
this for our Oh go I beg them I Read the first
issue and I couldn't get into it, but I read
the last week's issue, which I don't even remember
what issue that was That was five. Okay, so I've
read one in five But I cannot get into this.
It's just, two, wannabe anime, like, you know,
little girls in school outfits running around
having adventures in their Hogwarts thing. I
cannot get behind it. Both of you have no souls.
That's what it is. No, our souls are gone. Jim's
final choice for January solicits folks is The
Flash number 38 written by Robert Venditti and
Van Jensen art and cover by Britt Booth and Norm
Rapamond The Flash 75 variant cover by Howard
Porter and is a $2 .99 book The all -new all
-murderous Flash is posing as Barry Allen while
the real Scarlett Speedster is trapped in the
Speed Force What in the hell is going on? This
is a weird story. Basically, Barry Allen, future
Barry, came back, fought present day Barry, and
there was an explosion of the Speed Force, and
somehow future Barry de -aged to look like present
day Barry, while the present day Barry got stuck
in what they call the savage land of the Speed
Force. And what the Savage Land of the Speed
Force is almost like a land that time forgot
type of deal where everything from around time
is sucked in there. And in this issue, they even
claim Barry even says there's robots, dinosaurs
and robot dinosaurs in the Savage Land. Yeah,
it's the land of the lost. It is. In the meantime.
Hey, Cassada, you better sue DC already. Yes.
Yes. So and then there's there's the future Barry.
in the regular and he is trying to write the
wrongs that happened by basically killing everybody
who was bad so he's gone through the time on
the way here and this work he is a vicious killer
who is actually to put it in it reminds me a
lot of how superman is in injustice where things
have gone wrong he's changing the game well future
barry wants to change the game by killing everybody
And in the meantime, you get a weird sort of
vibe because he's with Patty, his girlfriend,
but it's his future self and it's a little odd.
The only thing that I don't like about this whole
storyline and this issue itself is I think that
the promise of these two storylines, even though
how crazy it sounds, I don't think they do enough
with them. I think that they could have done
a... thing with the Savage land where Barry stuck
in here with some pretty cool things. Like I
said, there's dinosaurs, robots, anything from
around time and robot dinosaurs. And they don't
seem to really want to grab onto that and go
with it. In this issue, you find out a little
bit of a history of the speedsters that you find
out. They say that they're telling Barry about
all these different. Speedster speed force powered
guys in the whole history of the world and then
in the meantime future Barry is fighting the
rogues who after forever evil have been trying
out different heat villains since heatwave died
in the rogues rebellion and forever evil and
they keep going bad and this one it's a guy named
napalm who is just i hate to say they're hotheads
but uh that's basically the joke and they're
trying to break this guy in or try him out and
he's awful and uh the future barry kind of uh
puts the end to his career as a heat villain
i'll tell you i won't spoil it but yeah and uh
basically i think what's happening is these Future
Barry is making everybody in Central City hate
Flash just in time for the real Barry to come
back and have to deal with it. I think that's
what it is. But I enjoy it. A lot of people are
a little torn by this whole savage land of the
speed force and this. I really like it. I just
wish that they would have done a little more
with it. All right, folks my three choices for
DC's January Solicits First up we have He -Man
the eternity war number two written by Dan Abnett
art by pot Mahan cover by Stefan Cedric I can't
say his name. I think that's right. I could be
wrong This is a 299 book. The battle begins as
He -Man leads his newly acquired army of snake
men into battle to make a surprise first strike
against the Dark Horde. Men in Arms, Shaves,
reveals his secret plan to overtake the Horde's
defenses. How will the Masters take down the
Dark Horde's devastating orbital disruptor? Find
out as this new MOTU epic continues. So far eternity
war has been great go pick this up folks You
don't even really need to read any of the other
DC stuff that they've done I will suggest reading
the blood of greyskull storyline from the 2013
ongoing but I Mean they've pretty much set this
up to be a whole new series and it's starting
with the war and it's awesome I'm loving the
hell out of it. You open the book up, you see
He -Man leading an army of snake men. You're
just blown away immediately. Absolutely. I had
such a good time reading this book. I can't wait
to see what happens next. Jim, I assume you're
not a Masters fan. No, it's not that I'm a...
I'm not a fan in particular, just most... You're
10 years too old. Yeah, I am. I am. And it's
weird, I did kind of watch the original show
for a little bit, but yeah, it's a little bit
beyond me. Though I like Gotham Academy, if I
didn't mention that yet. Oh Lord. I'll just keep
mentioning that. Next choice for me Scooby -Doo
team up number eight written by Shole fish art
by Scott Gerald's The cover is done by Dario
Brizuela. This is a 299 book Scooby and the gang
meet George Jetson and his boy Elroy. You can
sing the rest of the theme song for yourself
In the far -flung future everyday people like
the Jetsons don't like to believe in superstition
But people are people and they flip their jetpacks
to overdrive to flee from the unexpected appearance
of the space age specter Nice I Have a love -hate
relationship with scooby -doo team up uh... series
overall i loved it when they did the whole batman
thing in the beginning i loved it when they did
the bat might scooby might story i thought that
was cool i read both of those and really uh...
when it when it gets to the fact that they team
up with the super friends and wonder woman and
all that i just kinda just stepped away from
it issue seven came out a few months ago uh...
which is them in the flintstones actually have
that one i have not read it yet as i need to
read it eventually and i need to read this one
i actually had to go back on the comics ology
and reactivate my subscription to get this uh...
so you you're you're out there are now you're
not a scooby fan or a jetsons fan huh i have
a lot of hate relationship with scooby in general
because while i love paranormal stuff and ghost
hunting, it just always pissed me off as a kid
because you knew it wasn't gonna be an actual
monster. Now they've changed that up in recent
years, like, you know, they actually fight monsters
and ghosts and whatnot, but I just cannot get
it back into it. Jim? Well, I love Scooby -Doo,
and I always liked the Jetsons, even though...
I don't know, the Jetsons, now that I look back,
all those are pretty one -dimensional, but man,
the Jetsons are real one -dimensional, and I
in fact like, or actually really like, the Flintstones
issue that you were talking about. I'm more of
a Flintstones guy than a... Jetsons guy, but
I like the Jetsons too, and I love I actually
love the scooby -doo team up So I've actually
read a bunch. I did review a bunch at the beginning.
I kind of fell off reviewing them Only because
I don't know the the people that are going to
our site weren't really into it I don't think
but I really yeah, I really enjoy it though.
So yeah, I did team ups. I think are great I
think the best thing the Flintstones and the
Jetsons ever did was when they met each other
That in that movie that was the best thing now
I've forgotten about that. Yeah. I love that
I was actually I was to kind of sidetrack just
for a moment folks. I was actually Hospitalized
when that came out I had I had had a seizure
and For the ten days I was in the hospital. They
had that on video cassette. I broke the video
set from watching it so much and rewinding it
and all that stuff. Alright folks, my last choice
for January is the Batman Adventures Mad Love
Deluxe Edition Hardcover. This is a advanced
solicitation. It will be out March 18th. It is
96 pages, full color. It is $17 .99. Written
and drawn by the masterminds behind the Batman
animated series, Paul Dini and Proust Tim, this
epic reveals the origins of Harley Quinn as she
proves her love to the Joker by trying to eliminate
the Dark Knight on her own. Now in deluxe format
with exclusive extras and bonus material, dun
dun dun. I can't wait for this, actually. I already
bought it once, I'm not gonna buy it again. See,
I've never bought it. And I bought this well,
okay. Well, I take it back I bought the single
issue the digital issue that just has the Harley
story But yeah, I might actually have to pick
this up because man Just like It's it's gonna
be so interesting for me looking at this and
comparing it to what they did on the cartoon
series because I know it's Bruce Tim and Paul
Dini, but It's really cool Well, no, yeah, I'm
sure it's I'm sure it's very close But it's one
of those things where you're used to seeing these
character these versions of the characters on
a cartoon series Versus in a comic book run.
It's gonna be interesting to see you know what
the differences are Alright folks, that's going
to do it for the DC solicitations here in the
Profiling Previews episode for January. Up next,
Jeremy Fine and I are going to be talking about
the Image Comics solicitations, so stay tuned
for that, and we will see in a bit. We're going
to cover everything from kaiju, to comics, to
tv, to video games, you name it, we'll cover
it. And you never know where we're going to be.
Right now we're on Facebook .com, we're on Spreaker,
iTunes, Twitter, TuneIn Radio, We're also partnered
with the Geekcast Radio Network. We're everywhere,
man. We're even in your breakfast cereals. In
fact, this call is coming from inside your house.
Yeah. So check us out. All one word, Hunnic Outcast.
And we have brand new artwork thanks to Rene
Batista. Finally, a podcast that will never be
questioned. All right, folks. Up next here in
profiling previews inside the poll bag, I've
got Jeremy Fine with me. Hello, sir. How you
doing there, good sir? pretty good pretty good
and we're going to be talking about the image
comics january solicitations now these did come
out in november of twenty fourteen as i already
said in the i d w and d c portion of this of
the episode that this is basically uh... stuff
that's out now some of them might be advanced
solicitation so it might not be out right this
at this moment but most of the stuff is out now
uh... in january We're going to go through several
Image Comics titles and briefly talk about them
and let you know what we think you should be
checking out. So the first thing I have on the
list for January for Image Comics, The Dying
and the Dead Number One. The story is by Jonathan
Hickman, art and cover by Ryan Bodenheim. says
today tomorrow the grave this is a four dollar
fifty cent comic a murder at a wedding reveals
50 year old a 50 year old secret at a great cost
a man with a dying wife is given the opportunity
to save her a lost tribe is reborn another time
seemingly disparate events that force relics
from the greatest generation to come together
for one last hurrah brought to you by award -winning
writer Jonathan Nickman and fan favorite artist
Ryan Bodenheim the dying and the dead is high
adventure meets end -of -life care it's an Indiana
Jones for old people there are no fedoras only
bedpans oh my god this solicitation makes it
sound like it's Star Wars like Well, you know,
I guess there is going to be life after Star
Wars and Indiana Jones and they've always tried
I mean we all know it didn't work with Kingdom
of the Crystal Skull So now it's gonna work with
image comics with dying of the dead and I have
to admit going through this reddit Haven't memorized
it but you know, there's some of the solicitations.
This one looks like we're gonna be discussing
this somehow On you know later issue of the pullback
I I have to give I have to give image credit
where creditors do where they know They're not
worried about the capes. They're worried about
just taking a visual story and This and what
I like is they are taking submissions and they
seem to be taking a lot of submissions. So for
me this one works Absolutely I'm only bringing
the next one up here just because it's the 250th
issue of it Which is because I honestly folks
have zero interest I saw the movie You know 20
some odd 30 some well 20 some odd years ago,
and I just still just it's not my thing But I
thought for the listeners we should bring this
up spawn number 250 obviously Todd McFarland
Seisman Kudransky is on art and it has several
different variant covers. It is a $5 .99 book.
This huge triple size 250th anniversary issue
marks only the second time an Independent comic
book has reached such a lofty number this issue
marks the cataclysmic climax in the story of
the current spawn Jim Downing's final struggle
against his costume while the fate of New York
City lies in the balance From the ashes that
battlefield comes a long -awaited return of the
original spawn Al Simmons The celebration of
this anniversary issue will feature covers from
Todd McFarlane, Greg Capolo, Scotty Young, Jock,
Sean Murphy, and Philip Tan. Are you a Spawn
fan at all? You know, it's funny. I actually
became a fan of Spawn after the movie, because
of that HBO show that... You know, if you ever
watch robot chicken, you know that the plot makes
sense. No, no, no. I mean spawn to me Back then
was interesting how you had the antihero because
the 90s for me were all about the antiheroes
and spawn was He wasn't good. He wasn't evil.
He was in between but he wasn't good enough for
heaven Wasn't evil enough for hell and had a
fight both worlds while trying to accept the
fact that his wife remarried. And I thought it
was interesting. The problem was that the movie
left a bad taste in people's mouths. And I think
that's one of the reasons why people were turned
off by Spawn. And then, of course, we got our
good friend the HBO series. I think Spawn could
work as a movie, but it works better as a comic
book. Yeah. Mean I love you know antihero stuff
depending on what it is Depending on the type
of story it is But but yeah, no I mean hey, you
know congratulations to spawn for 250 issues
That's amazing people if your spawn fans go pick
that up I will say one last thing on spawn for
we move on here You mentioned that Hollywood
didn't know what to do with it. Yeah, I'm pretty
sure no one knows what to do with a Blue Luigi.
Yeah, you know what? One day we'll talk about
that movie, John Leguizamo, but he is the one
who helped save that movie in a way. Yeah, I
know. When did... This is completely off topic,
folks, I know. When did it come out? Uh, 1990.
Oh, damn, I was gonna say... uh... john leguizamo
is the nineties version of it but since it came
out in nineteen ninety but anyway um... all right
moving on folks uh... image comics also has coming
out or came out this month in january uh... ninth
generation number one now this is spelled roman
numerally i x t h uh... so the story is by matt
hawkins art and covers by Stefan Sejic? I believe
is how his name is pronounced. So 399 comic.
Do the ends truly justify the means? Is Utopia
built on genocide worth the price? Aphrodite,
Velocity, Hades, and the other nines establish...
I... I don't know. In the year 2525, yeah. Oh,
five of them, okay. In an attempt to rule, their
internal clashes have escalated and they are
forced to put that aside as they face off against
the relentless hordes of the darkness. Sins of
the past have come to claim those who would pretend
to be gods. The cybernetic future established
in Aphrodite 9 and Cyber Force finally comes
face -to -face with the supernatural artifacts
side of the top cow universe wait this is an
image title why is that top cow oh okay i see
what it is um this is probably not something
i'm gonna pick up folks uh twilight i guess you
know it's it seems to be like one of those books
you walk into barnes and noble that i see that
like all the twilight knockoffs for tweens uh...
yeah i i don't think will be least i know i'm
not going to be one of the swan no i mean it
looks it sounds interesting but doesn't sound
as interesting as you know uh... as the dying
in the dead number one was uh... moving on and
one of the reasons why do all these number ones
folks uh... here in january is because i want
people to start from the beginning on some of
these new series that are starting up so that's
one of the reasons why i'm doing this uh... we
have rain number one story by kell simons art
and cover by nathan stockman wonderful into baxter
uh... this uh... three dollar and fifty cent
book rain is a freelance swordsman and monster
hunter who also might be the last of the legendary
wardens of the land of fate whose ranks long
since faded into myth he is haunted and driven
by visions from a guiding angel who sets him
on the path of a great quest. Though Reign's
hardly the errant night -type, he'll rescue and
partner with the sorceress Seff, a member of
a coven known as the Followers of Tech, hunted
as heretics for their beliefs, but who may know
what secrets fate holds? Uh, Thunder the Barbarian,
anyone? I mean, here's the thing. I understand,
you know, nostalgia is a great thing, but it
just feels like it's cut copy and paste for somebody
watch too many thunder or mystery science here
3000, you know, that the world ended and we're
going to start all over, but technology, we don't
want to use it because it would doom the world
to begin with. But there's somehow sorcery. It's
thunder the barbarian. I'm not saying that's
a bad thing. I don't know if there's the mock
in this or anything. but you know it's like 21st
century everybody's taking what they took years
ago movie wise trying to cookie cut it and sometimes
it works and sometimes it doesn't if you have
better dialogue maybe but i i've been down this
road too many times how world ended technology
is evil we don't want it but we'll throw in a
sword of sorcerer and somebody with you know
the sick net in that mcpass I just feel like
been there done that one too many times Mm -hmm.
Oh Absolutely, absolutely. I mean, like I said
folks. I'm just pointing these out in case anyone
is interested Doesn't mean that we are going
to be interested Up next is stray bullets sunshine
and roses number one story art and covers by
David Laffam Stray Bullets continues with the
beginning of a brand new arc of stories. Sunshine
and Roses is about violence, love, and really,
really bad decisions. The Baltimore underworld
is falling apart at the seams and blood has been
spilt. Where and when things went to hell in
a handbasket can be traced back to a time a few
years earlier when a man named Harry ran the
city. Spanish Scott and Monster and... Spanish
Scott and monster enforced the rules and an insecure
young man named Orson met a wild and crazy girl
named Beth the two together cooked up the boldest
most outlandish and just about the stupidest
plan ever devised a plan to steal a whole lot
of Harry's money and Drugs and get a little revenge
along the way while every issue of stray bullets
presents a complete story the start of each new
arc is the perfect place to jump on board and
see what everybody else is talking about. This
sounds kind of fun. This sounds like Sex Criminals
Lite. It also sounds a little bit like the 90s
cult movie True Romance. Yeah, it does. I mean,
all the movies I've seen, but no, I mean, that's
not if you take it and put in comic book form.
I mean, it'll work. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. um
the next one folks is pretty much um getting
all of your sex in one big hardcover because
we have big hard sex criminals hardcover story
by mad fraction art and cover by ziggy chooch
um uh well uh obviously uh chip oh what's his
name I should know. I just followed him on Twitter.
Chip Zdarsky, thank you. You know, so Big Hard
Sex Criminals is basically a hardcover collecting
the first ten issues of the Eisner and Harvey
award -winning Time Magazine best comic of the
year for 2013. Sex Criminals in an oversized
hardcover format guaranteed to embarrass you
to order. Uh, you know, I'll say this. We are
still waiting on volume two of Sex Criminals
to come out. It's been delayed a few times. It's
supposed to come out later in February, which
is actually issues six to ten. If you're someone
that wants to get into Sex Criminals right away
and not by the single issues, go out and get
this hardcover, because it's the first ten issues
of the series. Well, as I said when we recorded
it the last time, it's one of the most tasteful
sex Comics that I've reviewed. I mean the last
one I read was Barbarella years ago when I get
my hands on and I and of course I do have to
rerecord because this was an episode that I lost
about Sex and comics, but we discussed this a
few months ago. Oh, absolutely and You know,
I'll stick by what I said before it's been a
while since I read volume one So I know we're
in on volume two, but I like the characters and
I like the idea. It's not so much that sex is
wrong. It's the power of orgasm that it's so
powerful. It stops time and how you have these
two people that had bad experiences with sex
and how they're now using it to their advantages.
The only con that I still find is that underground
society, like in the science fiction, we have
to have the organization of the society. Mm -hmm,
but you know kind of like the matrix we had to
have the agents Right. I'm almost waiting for
them to say mr. Anderson But past all that I
like to see where we're gonna go down the rabbit
hole and Why they were able to put sexual orgasm
as a weapon so Yeah, I mean this one is also
gonna be interesting to get your hands on the
hardcover and it's reasonably priced Yep Forty
bucks for ten issues. That's not bad people Up
next is bitch planet number two story by Kelly
Sue DeConnick art and cover by Valentine de la
Landro Now framed for murder inside the prison
cam is offered a leniency if she'll train her
crew For a death sport about against a visiting
team of male prisoners from 2014 best writer
Eisner nominee Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentin
DeLandro with colorist Chris Peters. We have
Bitch Planet number two. We might cover this
in a future episode, but I'm not sure. That first
issue, while I enjoyed it, it didn't like knock
my socks off. You know, here's the thing. It
reminds me of a 70s grindhouse movie. You know,
all those exploitation. Um, the problem is that
you never get a second chance to make a first
impression but Maybe it's because i'm a huge
fan of the john waters trash trilogy of the 70s
a female trouble and pink flamingos And because
that's you know, what was it big bertha? I think
her name was Yeah that she reminded me of divine.
I Put in a subscription for Bitch Planet. Now
I don't know if we'll ever discuss it on the
poll bag again or I'll just do it on Hunnic Outcast
but I maybe just because I'm a fan of these type
of movies and that's where it belongs in a grindhouse
but it works for me because I'm kind of curious.
I'm gonna give it one more chance. Yeah, I am
too. I mean, issue number two, the issue I just
read the solicit for is already out. So go get
it, folks, if you're interested and like to try
it. I mean, we'll cover it eventually, but right
now it most likely won't be until closer to summer
or even fall at this point. But I mean, yeah,
it is interesting. It is cool. I just don't know
if... It's just one of those books where I enjoyed
it, but it didn't let like It didn't really grab
me either way whether I really love it or whether
I just don't want to read it all anymore I'm
just kind of like straddling the fence with that
one so Alright folks cowl number eight Kyle Higgins
and Alex Siegel on writing Rod Rice on art the
cover is by Trevor McCarthy This was actually
pushed to February 4th, so this actually hasn't
come out yet. Thanks to Camden Stone, Jeffrey
Warner has the villains he desperately needed,
but at what cost, and how long can Jeffrey keep
the lie going? Are you reading, Cowell? You know
what? I listened to your podcast, or the episode
on Paul Beg for Hugh and Dane. I did download.
Uh, I am getting a subscription. I have not read
it yet. I was busy with my own work. But I definitely
want to sit down and read Cowell. Cowell to me
sounds interesting. Because if I understand this,
you have to be in a union to be a superhero.
Is that how it works? It's, it's what if there
was a superhero labor union in 1960 Chicago?
Oh, that's awesome. You see that, that is smart
writing. The only thing I'm going to say is...
i know we keep bringing up this does you know
how comic books have become like this huge property
where they could be made into movies sex writer
please stay away from this see that's the thing
i don't think as you as a thing though this actually
this comic series spawned out of kyle higgins
is college film the league this is his creator
own type of thing i don't think you're gonna
see unless Kyle does something else with it for
film, I pretty much can guarantee that this is
probably just gonna be a comic series. It is...
I mean, I know various other comic books and
comic book characters have soundtracks in their
various other media forms like Batman and Justice
League and Superman and all that stuff, but right
now, as far as I know, Cowell is the only one
to have a soundtrack for the comic itself. And
that's good marketing and I know you reviewed
it. So, oh, yeah, absolutely Um, yeah people
please I have not read it, but I've heard of
it and please listen to that episode Yeah, cowl
is definitely going to be another underrated
classic If I understand this correctly, huh?
Hopefully it won't be too too much underrated.
It kind of reminds me of though Yeah, much even
watch, you know with Beetlejuice the cartoon
series like he wanted to be a superhero, but
he had to be in a union Hmm. Yeah, a little bit.
I'm sure this is much better though, so. Oh,
absolutely. We got two more on here, folks, and
then we're gonna head on over to Marvel to wrap
up this January episode. We covered number one
of this. I have not picked up any other issues
since then, but January, we had release from
Image Comics Rasputin number four. Story by Alex
Gresham art by Riley Rossimo and Ivan placentia
Betrayed Rasputin's life changes forever when
he's asked to save the prince's life But first
the mad monk has to let someone else die his
road to infamy begins here Rasputin was another
one where I really think that I hate to say this
but I really think Doc Brown and Meg Ryan and
Anastasia have really spoiled me on my feelings
on Rasputin. I just can't see this guy as an
anti -hero. It's just too strange. You know,
and I defended this comic when I read issue one.
And again, out of the subscription series for
Image Right Now, when we talked about, I think,
Bitch Planet and Rasputin. Yeah, I definitely
put one in. I have not had a chance to read the
other issues, but I love the artwork. And I just
love the fact that we're taking somebody like
Rasputin and giving him a comic book series,
which is the most bizarre comic book series you
can give a guy. um i'd recommend it i just haven't
had a chance to read the other issues yet i'm
sure we're gonna get back to it one day but for
me right now yeah give it another chance though
for you know even if we don't review it on the
pullback um i will probably I don't know if I'll
discuss it down the road, but that's another
one you should keep on the list, though, for
anyone who's... I know Anastasia left a bad taste
in people's mouths, but it could be worse. It
could be Vigo the Carpathian, even though I would
like to see what they would do with that type
of character. And that's where I thought they
were going with this. Like, they couldn't get
the rights from, you know, Reitman or Columbia
to do a spinoff of, you know, Vigo, so they got
Rasputin anyway. It's 50 -50, but it's... you
know it's pretty much you know i guess a sorcerer
yep um so okay so we actually have one more after
after this one before we get to the last one
we have god hates astronauts volume one this
is a trade paperback it is a new printing uh
for 1799 uh the story art cover are all done
by ryan brown God hates astronauts follows the
story of a group of incompetent Small -minded
super powered narcissist called the power persons
five What the hell? Hired by NASA to stop all
farmers from launching themselves into space
and homemade rocket ships unfortunately for NASA
this goal is scarcely even addressed as the book
focuses more on the Extra marital affairs, bank
robbing owls, big gross swollen heads, ghost
cow heads, old time boxers, tigers eating cheeseburgers,
in the crab nebula, buffalo judges, and tons
of aggressive swearing. Not so much a superhero
book as it is a parody of basically everything
and a celebration of weird that is jam packed
with references to Robocop and Die Hard. What
the hell is this? This is a love letter to everything
and anything I grew up watching from Mystery
Science Theater 3000, Lost in Space, Guardians
of the... Not Silverhawks, but Guardians of the
Universe. You remember that other 80s show? Battle
of the Planets, that's what it was. Yes, Battle
of the Planets. Robo tech you take all that in
put it in a blender and you hit frappe and you
throw in some 1960s surrealness and you have
God hates astronauts now there is the trade for
1799 if you go to comics ology, however, you
can purchase each individual issue right now,
so you don't have the exactly Breakdown and buy
the trade yet. If you're not too sure what you
want to do or how you want to take this It does
seem like a lot crammed in but I guarantee you
you will leave this series satisfied This is
another one. I am on the hands and knees Begging
that we got to sit down and talk about we're
gonna roundtable this one, too We got to get
you me Dane I guess yeah, we you know JT we definitely
have to because if he loves Boba the the redneck
werewolf We definitely got to discuss this one
oh god boba the redneck werewolf what if boba
fett turned into a werewolf holy crap okay folks
last one we're going to talk about um and it's
something i've been wanting to bring into the
pull bag it's something i will never cover because
i hate uh zombies in general as we already found
out in this episode when i talked with nicole
uh on the idw solicits but uh the walking dead
number 136 story robert kirkman art by charlie
Adlard and a Stefano guy. Why I don't know and
yeah, so basically There's no solicitation here.
It just says found That's all it says brains.
You know this yeah had brains and here's the
thing Kudos to AMC on what they did for the adaptations.
The problem is with this comic right now is that
They don't know where to go anymore and the fans
are getting nervous because they think that Sheriff
Rick Grimes is in a coma while all this is going
around and all the other people are marking different
parts of his personality. That's not true. There
was another rumor that aliens from outer space
are the ones who sent the virus down so this
way humanity will kill themselves and you know,
aliens will take over. That's not true. I don't
know where this virus is going to go. But when
we discussed about death of comic book characters
on an episode of The Pullback a few months ago,
I was going to talk heavily about Walking Dead,
about a few of the story arcs. There were some
great story arcs and deaths in this series. But
the problem is, is that I feel once we got to
the character Negan, and now that he's out of
the picture, it almost feels now like a video
game, like you had Iggy Koopa and Luke Ving von
Koopa and Kami Koopa and now you've got Bowser
which was Negan and now that he's out there are
rumors that Rick will finally get killed off
and Carl you know will take over the group or
whatever the case may be and the problem is that
the show is different from the comics they adapted
a little but then they've changed the rules here
and there it's a great story about survival or
at least it is what other zombie movies should
have been the characters are likable but the
problem is is that i don't know where else these
characters can go now because we had one character
who claimed he was a scientist and he really
wasn't and there there's all this tension and
we're just trying to kill off characters to sell
comics and that's where it gets a little long
in the tooth so I'm still defending the series.
I love the show. I love the comic, but I feel
that I don't know where else these characters
can go anymore. Yeah, I don't know. All as I
know about The Walking Dead, whether it's the
comic or the show, is that these people either
survived a zombie apocalypse or they're still
trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. And for
me personally, zombies, not my thing at all.
so uh... uh... i'd folks uh... j t and i are
going to take over for the marvel solicitations
and after that i will run that round out the
end of the first uh... profiling previews episode
so we'll be back with marvel after this All right,
folks, it is time for the Marvel January 2015
solicitations. Again, these are stuff that is
already out. We're wanting to inform you on what
is going on with Marvel Comics. I am, of course,
TF2 and Mike, as you've heard me throughout this
whole episode. Joining me this time for the Marvel
stuff is JT from Nickelback Country. I'm back.
How you doing, Mike? It's going. It's going.
All right, so we're gonna start off with uncanny
avengers number one written by rick remender
art by daniel, uh tuna I think it's pronounced.
I say akuna Okay, it seems Whatever. Yeah, i'm
sure somebody will correct us in the comments
and i'm sure and that's fine They'll sound like
some point dexter with tape on their glasses
Anyway, but yeah, we better be careful about
poindexters because they can turn out in out
into becoming freakazoids So this one counter
evolutionary part one from the ashes of access
and all new all different Avengers Assemble the
tragedy at the end of access has left the uncanny
Avengers Vulnerable and someone is taking advantage
of it one of the Avengers oldest foes returns
with a terrible secret that will All hyperbole
aside, shatter the lives of two members of the
squad. What is Counter -Earth? What terrible
secrets does it house? Dun dun dun. Did you pick
this one up? Yeah, I actually picked up most
of the... Well, I got the entire Core Axis mini
-series, which was a lot of fun. I enjoyed it
for what it was, and is also part of setting
up Marvel's eventual reboot. Which we will talk
about in a future. Yeah So, you know post access
the uncanny Avengers was essentially the Avengers
X -Men Collabo They're they're broken up for
everything that's happened. So in this new one,
we've got the now in touch with his Inner his
conscience saber -tooth. We've got a newly redesigned
vision Brother voodoo who got resurrected Quicksilver
and Scarlet Witch and Rogue. And this is... Basically,
it's the return of Counter -Earth. Counter -Earth
is something that's been in Marvel Comics two
or three times over its history. Originally,
it was created by the High Evolutionary, which
is on the opposite side of the Sun from, you
know, Earth -616. You know, we saw it in the
Spider -Man Unlimited cartoon where he basically
created his own world to... you know work on
his genetic experiments and you've got the high
of the knights of the high evolutionary and all
that and at during access for those that may
have not noticed when scarlet witch went you
know bug nut crazy she created a blood spell
that was going to kill you know the rest of her
family and intending to kill magneto and then
that didn't work on magneto and everyone's like
you're not my real father which and this is something
we can talk about another episode but basically
this storyline in addition to bringing back uh
you know counter -earth and you know what's the
high evolutionary up to this is also marvel trying
to finesse scarlet witch and quicksilver out
of being mutants and into probably being in humans
which goes to the whole reason why there's potentially
not going to be any X -Men or Fantastic Four
comics past Secret Wars because Marvel doesn't
own the film rights and they don't want to share
or they don't want to promote somebody else's
product. But overall, this first issue is a lot
of fun, mainly because of the gorgeous art by
Daniela Coelho. Also, I forgot, looking at the
cover here, the all -new Captain America is part
of the squad, Sam Wilson. Because Daniel Akuna
had his art. There's no really solid lines and
a lot of the characters. It has this very It's
a soft color palette, but it's not Watercolor
like it's just it's all it's almost painted So,
you know, it's setting up this mystery of what's
going on in the counter -earth And again, this
seems to be the original counter -earth not the
one that Franklin Richards created in with Heroes
Reborn that will come into play later on in another
comic we'll talk about but they're basically
trying to uh you know find scarlet witch and
they track her down to wonder gore mountain which
is this unholy abomination of the arcane and
the technological you know we're not reviewing
yeah no i'm just trying to set up okay i just
want to make sure so yeah they go there and wacky
shenanigans happen where they get transported
to counter earth And overall, it's a it's a really
I think it's a solid setup for a pretty interesting
story, you know that counter earth is back again
Where it's thought to have been destroyed and
they're all separated on the planet So it's a
matter of the Avengers getting back together
and trying to figure out, you know What kind
of shenanigans high evolutionary is up to? So
all very solid definitely looking forward to
where this is going Up next we have Star Wars
number one which came out and you can check it
out a written review by Jeremy Fine over on geekcastradio
.com written by Jason Aaron art by John Cassidy
The greatest space adventure of all time returns
to Marvel. Luke Skywalker and the ragtag band
of rebels fighting against the Galactic Empire
are fresh off their biggest victory yet, the
destruction of the massive battle station known
as the Death Star. But the Empire's not toppled
yet. Join Luke along with Princess Leia, Smugglers,
Han Solo and Chewbacca, droid C -3PO and R2 -D2,
and the rest of the Rebel Alliance as they strike.
Out for freedom against the evil forces of Darth
Vader and his master the Emperor written by Jason
Aaron obviously with art by John Cassidy This
is the Star Wars saga as only Marvel Comics could
make it Are you picking this one up? Well, technically
I am and I'm not because as I told Mike off air
folks the day this came out They sold out so
fast the pat the owner of the comic book store
I go to here in Saskatoon Was unable to put any
copies in the files for file customers such as
myself So this this is why you go digital people
That's an episode in and of itself I definitely
want to pick this up. I have checked out some
of the previews on like comic you know, comic
book resources and newsarama. It's some gorgeous,
gorgeous art by John Cassidy, who was the premier
artist for, I think, pretty much the complete
run of Planetary through Wildstorm Comics years
ago. If you want to see some of his best work,
it's definitely in there. And I'm looking, this
is the, like it said, Star Wars returns to Marvel.
This is the second series Marvel had the license
through the... 70s and into the 80s just passed
Return of the Jedi and I don't know what happened
there but then you know Dark Horse picked it
up and ran with it for like almost 25 years and
put out some great stuff but this I'm definitely
looking forward to it I mean you got the gorgeous
uh is that Alex Ross in the painted cover you
know uh and you can't go wrong with a good Alex
Ross cover right you know it's very very movie
poster there's the Scotty Young you know little
Star Wars with the you know puppy -sized Chewbacca
and little Rapscallion and not yet a scoundrel
Han Solo yeah the covers are some of the best
things like I haven't read it yet so I can't
you know honestly give a quick recommendation
I'm very much looking forward to it I have it.
I haven't even looked at it yet. I want to I
just I'm saving it so we can cover it eventually
So I haven't even it's sitting on the comics
ology for me. I've already got it in my books
I love the fact that Alex Alonso like editor
-in -chief of Marvel. He has his own little text
crawl Yeah, and the interior page, you know It's
like oh Yeah, it's absolutely awesome All right,
coming up next that came out in January, we've
got Ant -Man number one written by Nick Spencer,
art by Ramon Rosanis? Rosanis or something like
that. Rosanis, yeah. Scott Lang has never exactly
been the world's best superhero, heck. Most people
don't even think he's been the best Ant -Man.
And the last guy invented Ultron and joined the
Masters of Evil, so that's saying something.
But when the superior Iron Man calls with a once
-in -a -lifetime opportunity, Scott's going to
get a chance to turn it all around and be the
hero he's always dreamed of being. Sure, he's
been to prison. Sure, he's been through a messy
divorce. Sure, he's been, um, dead. But this
time is different. This time, nothing is going
to stop the astonishing Ant -Man. I have this
in my wish list on Comixology. I'm not sure if
I'm going to pick it up. The only reason why
I'm halfway interested is because I want to see
what the difference will be between this new
number one and what the eventual film will do.
Yeah, because from what I understand, at least
with the films, they're going to have a two -part
prelude comic. But in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
Hank Pym, Mike Douglas, was active in the 50s
and 60s as Ant -Man. And that's like a look back
at that, you know, in the days of Peggy Carter
and the SSR and all of that. So I'm looking forward
to that too. This first issue was a lot of fun
where, you know, Tony Stark, cause if you don't
know Superior Iron Man, basically Tony Stark,
because of Axis has reverted to what he, who
he was prior to, you know, getting the shrapnel
near his heart. building the suit to survive
and all that and so now he's a d -bag of the
highest order but he comes and it's like this
is smarmy businessman you know Tony Stark so
he hires Scott to become his new you know chief
of security and then Scott's got to deal with
the fact that his ex is taking his daughter away
who He was dead and then Cassie sacrificed herself
I forget how to resurrect Scott and she was dead
and then something happened that brought Cassie
back It's a whole convoluted mess people just
go check out ant -man number one exactly it basically
ends with him following his wife and Cassie to
Miami and He wants to be a father to his daughter
and that's really good Ramon I'm not even going
to try and butcher your last name Ramon. Ramon's
art is great in this. It's nice and solid, and
it conveys the action of the story very well.
And I'm looking forward to what's going on. And
if you look down the road, there's, you know,
they do like 80s variant covers. And there's
one coming down the road where I guess the Grizzly,
who's like this D -list Marvel villain. is gonna
team up with Ant -Man in one issue, but the cover
is done up like Miami Vice, with Ant -Man being
Sonny Crockett, and it's so good. So, definitely
pick it up, people. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
number one, Ryan North on writing, Erika Henderson
on art and color. Would you like me to read this
one? No, I got it Wolverine Deadpool, dr. Doom
Thanos There's one hero that's beaten them all
and now she's got her own ongoing series not
that she's bragging That's right. You asked for
it. You got it. It's squirrel girl. She's also
starting college this semester It's the start
of a brand new series of adventures starring
the nuttiest and most upbeat superhero in the
world so All I'm waiting for at this point is
the Squirtle Girl Rocket Raccoon wedding. That
would be so... No, wait, wait. I quote young
Frankenstein. It could work. Oh, I'm waiting.
Hey, well, they do have a Guardians Team Up comic
coming out. I mean, it could happen. So... Mike's
not live. They're not lying with this ad folks
in her very first appearance. I'm just gonna
look up on her wiki here, which was Marvel superheroes
volume to number eight aka Marvel superheroes
winter special winter 1991 in her first appearance
Squirrel girl and she is a mutant who can mentally
Control squirrels the way Aquaman controls fish
cuz sure why not it's comics she Basically takes
out Dr. Doom with hordes and hordes of squirrels.
She took out Doom. She is a badass. Absolutely.
And the last time we saw Squirrel Girl, she was
the super powered nanny for Luke Cage and Jessica
Jones' daughter Danielle Cage. And she kind of
walked off into the sunset with them. hasn't
been seen since and here we see you know she's
trying to better herself and one of the best
i i'm not entirely sold on erica henderson's
art it's not bad it's just her squirrel girl
is like she's got this like pudgy face and this
kind of upturned nose and oh that's it's squirrels
kind of are well i know but I mean this is on
a human so I'm just saying I'm not and that's
not that I'm not sold because the art the story
and it's great where she takes on Craven the
hunter and kind of defeats him by giving him
a life lesson right and use one of the best things
about this comic was the uh she can speak fluent
squirrel so her pet school partner tippy toe
when you see them talking to each other you will
see tippy toes speaking english but if there's
anyone else around tippy toes all of a sudden
comes to that Look sweet sweet, you know squirrel
talk it's just The squirrel girl she was created
to bring back that Light -hearted anything goes
joy of the comic books. I'm quoting her creator
will Murray here, right? No relation to bill
And that's what she does and that's what's this
so great about this comic is it's fun and it's
light -hearted and The next issue she's potentially
going to be taking on Galactus, and I was like,
I'm sold. And Galactus, the only thing I can
think of, especially probably when I read it,
you know, once I get the next issue of Squirtle
Girl, all I can think of is Galactus from Superhero
Squad as basically George Takei as the voice
of Galactus. Oh, my. I love the creamy center.
Wolverine's number one. Charles soul on the writing
Nick Bradshaw on art and color and cover from
the pages of death of wolverine the logan legacy
and weapon x program wolverine may be dead but
what will happen to his mortal remains encased
in something as rare and as powerful as adamantium
the battle for control of this valuable artifact
has begun but why does it matter so much and
why is a war brewing in logan's name death is
on the books for a dozen heroes and villains
and the mystique is playing mystique is playing
chess with them all including x23 saber tooth
dakin lady death strike and more murder mutilation
betrayal and trauma none will be spared dumb
dumb dumb Did you pick up Wolverine's number
one? I've actually picked up Wolverine's one
through four, but oh jeez, okay Well, don't don't
synopsize. Oh, no, I was basically spinning out
of the events of the death of Wolverine there
There is this group called though. They're called
the paradise team which came out of the weapon
X program You find out there were dr. Cornelius
the guy who basically created Wolverine back
in the days been trying to perfect his Creations
and so he won't be known as some as the guy who
created like the world's most murderous mutant
and There's these characters who end up teaming
up with the Wolverines And that comes out of
the Logan Legacy, which is a mini series that
see how Sabretooth, Dawken, Mystique, Lady Deathstrike
and X -23 are dealing with the death of, you
know, somebody who's such a huge part of their
lives. And Wolverines is a weekly comic book
series. This is something Marvel hasn't done
before. I mean, DC's done it before. I mean,
and there was a hit and a miss because there
was 52, which was great. And then there was countdown,
which was bug nut crazy. Doesn't even begin to
describe that. But it's the overall, it's a pretty
interesting story. If you're in, if you follow
the death of Wolverine and the Logan legacy and
weapon X, like there is a cool kind of black
ops conspiracy story going on here involving
these superhero characters. And I'm definitely
in it for a Well, I don't want to say the complete
long haul, but I'm going to be here still for
a while because I want to see where they're going.
Yeah, we will eventually cover death of Wolverine
and all that stuff in the pullback at some point
this year, hopefully. But no, this looks really
interesting. And I remember when I first saw
the solicitations when they came back, came out
in November of last year, I was like, Wolverine's
number one. What in the Sam? How are they done?
Like, oh, OK. Yeah. Up next we're not gonna talk
too much about this folks, but I thought I'd
bring this up This is Marvel's the Avengers number
two of two Will Corona Pilgrim is on the writing
Joe Bennett is on the art get ready for Marvel's
the Avengers age of Ultron with this official
adaptation of the first blockbuster film So this
is going to be interesting. Even though we've
all seen the Avengers movie at this point, it's
going to be interesting to see it adapted into
comic form. Yeah. And you would think for a studio
that is spawned from a comic book company, it
would take them less than three years to get
this comic book out. Because I mean, the Thor
comic book like Iron Man, like all their adaptations
of their movies have all come out like a year
to two years after the movie's been out in theaters,
which I just don't understand the logic there,
but no this this to issue Adaptation here is
absolutely gorgeous art by Joe Bennett You know
nice solid, you know cinematic And it's just
yeah, I mean it's it's a great adaptation of
a great comic book film They like they knock
this one. I mean they even have the the particularly
what I liked in this one was the Little back
and forth that Coulson has with Loki in the scene.
We all know that they share together in the movie
Is it was absolutely great? So I definitely recommend
picking this one up. Yeah All right moving on
we have spider verse number two of two by slot
and Emonen along with Jed McKay and others Let's
see here Spider verse tie -in the spider verse
anthology continues So many spider men and women
in this issue video game spidey punk rock spidey
fairy tale spidey Mexico's own spidey tale in
Spanish. Oh Are you telling me that they actually?
Translated an entire story for spider -man for
Spanish speaking people. Well, no in this one
what happened is One of the tales is a Mexico
spider -man from you know Let's say it's universe
taco, not trying to be culturally and sense of
anything. I just honestly can't remember the
universal designation for it. Uh, where the they,
it's a very short story and the art is absolutely,
uh, I think that was David Lafuente that did
it. I'm not entirely certain. Uh, but you read
the first detail in Spanish and then they give
you the English translation. Okay. And there's
this other thing where like, you know, punk rock
Spidey is. It's like Hobie Brown from this anarchic
universe. And you've seen Punk Spidey in the
Spider -Verse crossover so far. He's the one
with the ripped -off sleeves, jean jacket, vests,
and the punk metal spikes in his mask. And he
shows up. And then there's, from Marvel Fairy
Tales, there's the Spider Knight. Oh, jeez. And
the video game Spidey is like, in the course
of the Spiders, you see Moreland and his family,
specifically Moreland, these one shots take out
of some of the more lesser known Spidey's, like
he tried taking out the Spider -Man from the
black and white newspaper strip and eventually
said nuts to this and went home because as they
go from panel to panel, sometimes characters
repeat what they said before and Moreland couldn't
deal with that. So he you know buggered off and
then he took out uh spider -man and his amazing
friends spider -man and then he took out the
hostess fruit pie spider -man oh jesus and in
this one he takes out the uh video game spidey
is the spider -man that we've seen in all the
marvel versus capcom video games so he's like
web fist web bomb you know and then you know
marlin has his inheritor fist and she takes out
spidey and that's some of the more slightly amusing
things like it's not that i actually i crave
death of characters but you do don't lie well
in this respect i kind of enjoy it because i
mean come on he took out the freaking hostess
fruit pie spidey and he's like wait why aren't
you eating that you know he's like why aren't
you placated by these chemically produced pie
pockets you know that's one of the best things
about these spider verse uh the team ups like
this and all that is you see all and literally
they're using every version of spider -man and
they've brought in you know the manga verse spider
-man they've brought in the black and white uh
japanese original manga spider -man they've brought
in the supita man from the live -action 70s tokusatsu
show it's the spider -verse has been great and
this issue just kind of highlights the overall
insanity and god i love this of the comic. Absolutely.
Alright, up next we have Amazing Spider -Man
Number 13, slot on writing, Giuseppe on art.
Spider -Verse Part 5, the final battle begins
here. Every Spider -Man ever must fight, and
no spider is safe. Dun dun dun. Um, I'm... I'm
still... I still have not gotten into Amazing
yet. I'm still on my whole trip of oh they had
to reboot the entire series just because that
second movie came out so I'm gonna go back we're
gonna be doing Marvelous March and we are gonna
be covering the first volume the first trade
for Amazing Spider -man and I'm gonna see if
I'm gonna like going from superior back to amazing
but I gotta say folks I'm not Through I'm I mean
very interested to see what spider verse is and
we may have to do like a spider verse September
or something like that to actually cover spider
verse in its entirety, but I'm just not I'm still
in my whole mode of I would rather see Doc Ock
and His adventures as superior spider -man well,
they actually have at the end I think it was
this issue where they basically they're trapped
on a world that's been annihilated by nuclear
war and Radiation is like the one weakness that
Moreland and the rest of his fam family, which
are called the inheritors Right like they're
susceptible to this This was established, you
know in I think it's like Moreland second appearance
back in the day when J Michael Straczynski was
still writing or when he was writing spider -man
back in the day and so they and they also find
the only man that survived this that's the only
human left alive in this world is living in the
same bunker that cindy moon or silk was living
in and it's uncle ben and uncle ben is this world
spider -man oh no it's actually not that bad
Moving on to something superior, folks. Superior
Iron Man number four. Written by Tom Taylor.
Art by Ildre Senar. Covered by Mike Choi, welcome
to Daredevil on the Rocks. Daredevil discovers
the secret to Tony's success. How far will Tony
go to stop Matt Murdock from revealing this shocking
secret to the world? As Tony's actions become
even more questionable, who will conspire to
take him down, leading up to the battle you thought
you'd never see? I want to read Superior Iron
Man. We will be covering Superior Iron Man, at
least the first five issues in Marvelous March
this year. I have not read it at this point,
but I have the first, I think, three issues.
Yeah. It's, uh, but I don't want to spoil too
much, but Tony starts a dick. He's a dick of
the highest order. Who the whole set up in Superior
is that he's released the extremis. version 3
to as a web app and it allows people to become
pretty and Basically this results in everyone
like there's roving gangs of beautiful people
walking around San Francisco where Tony has set
his headquarters now And they're beating up everyone
who's ugly or not like them And then they're
robbing them because Tony Stark charges a hundred
bucks a day for this thing. It's not a one -time
payment is micro transactions oh lord and he's
up to something and in this issue daredevil kind
of susses it out or at least he knows the part
of it and yeah the like i said tony stark's a
dick uh and i'm reading this because a i've been
reading spider -man or iron man for years and
i want to see where this goes right right absolutely
all right because he's back on the sauce now
Yeah, he is. Fantastic Four, number 642. Anyway,
written by James Robinson, art by Leonard Kirk.
The countdown begins. The invaders meet the Fantastic
Four as the hunt for Reed Richards and the missing
kids of the Future Foundation continues. Meanwhile...
Mastermind Behind Everything unveils his ultimate
plan, but how does Franklin Richards factor in?
Guest starring Jim Hammond, Namor, the new Captain
America, and Doc Green? Dun dun dun. You wanted
to talk about this one, so in brief, don't summarize
it for us, but just give us your overall thoughts
here. Well, just briefly, just mention something
from the previous issue. You find out the villain
behind all the Fantastic Four Troubles of Lates,
you know, getting booted out of the Baxter building,
their kids taken away, Johnny Storm losing his
powers, the thing being framed for murder, is
the result of this villain called the Quiet Man
who, his entire motivation is he's pissed at
Reed Richards because he wanted to date Sue Storm
and he never drummed up the courage to ask her
out. I shit you not that is his entire motivation
Thank God. I'm not reading this series and in
this issue. It's just continuing that story.
They're building towards the conclusion because
this is now the beginning of nothing lasts forever,
which is essentially the swan song of the fantastic
four for the foreseeable future because I don't
know if I mentioned it earlier in the episode,
but Marvel isn't looking to really promote somebody
else's movies and thus they're gonna kind of
quietly, you know, shutter the X -Men and the
Fantastic Four and concentrate in other aspects
of the Marvel Universe, you know, the ones where
they own the movie rights. And the one thing
I want to mention for, because we mentioned Counter
-Earth with Uncanny Avengers. Well, the last
few issues, and certainly they show up in this
issue of Fantastic Four, is the Heroes Reborn
Avengers have come in and have started attacking
various of the members of Fantastic Four. So
there's like brown plant man costumed Hawkeye
and Tony Stark with like the two smokestack vent
things off his I you know his back and You know,
it's the it's all the heroes reborn version of
these characters because Franklin Richards who
Occasionally has cosmic phenomenal cosmic powers
and occasionally he doesn't somehow the quiet
man has resurrected Franklin's counter -earth
and is drawing out these versions of the heroes
to, you know, work his nefarious plans. And I
just love the fact that this entire, the whole,
the only reason this is happening is because
this guy couldn't get up and grow enough of a
spine to ask out a girl. You're setting a bad
precedent, sir. Alright folks up next we have
spider -man and the x -men number two. Hey wait.
That's a title of a video game Elliot Callan
is on writing Marco Phallelia is on art. Bad
teacher, Spidey has already gotten his ex -students
captured by Sauron and Stegaron? Can they stop
the savage land from colonizing Staten Island?
Traitor, has shark girl really betrayed her classmates
for these cold -blooded creeps? Romance, have
you ever seen a Pteranodon Stegosaurus shark
love triangle? You will if you buy this issue.
I have no idea what to say after that. Spider
-Man the X -Men is something that Marvel is doing
is if they keep the X -Men around it long past
Secret Wars, it's a rotating series of they'll
have like basically short little mini series
of different characters coming in to teach at
the Jean Grey school. So now Spider -Man is brought
in as like a guidance counselor slash ethics,
you know, professor. And on his first day, he
takes his class on his field trip, and they discover
Stagron, who is this dinosaur man, supervillain
who wants to turn the entire world into dinosaurs.
Of course! And Sauron, who's this vampiric, life
-sucking pterodactyl man mutant from X history,
they're trying to turn Staten Island into the
Savage Land 2. And it's it sounds exactly bug
nut crazy as that and it doesn't end there and
That's that's almost as crazy as me saying earlier
in this episode about you know Squirtle girl
and rockin raccoon having the wedding of the
century that that makes about as well Deadpool
got married and that marriage is lasted. So Well,
yeah but uh but yeah no this uh it this is again
this goes back into kind of the genre of like
you know like what i said about squirrel girl
light -hearted anything goes the sheer joy of
this comic book it's it's not super it's serious
because you know they're spider -man and the
x kids or x students are captured and they've
got to stop these two villains from taking over
the world and there's elements of a rom -com
mixed in here and you know because storm is really
really really really bad rom -com well let's
face it i mean come on now shark girls making
goo -goo eyes at like steger on to like turn
them against soran and but she's really got eyes
for one of the other mutant kids and storm is
now the you know dean or principal of the gene
gray school and she's she's not under the effects
of Axis anymore but she's still pissed that they
brought in Spider -Man and she's just basically
tells him like I wish you would die like you
know it's just all this all this stuff is thrown
at you and it all kind of works and they're going
to show and hunt just like I want the third issue
now Alright, the final one we're going to talk
about, ladies and gentlemen, is Rocket Raccoon
Volume 1, a Chasing Tale premiere hardcover.
I believe this is an advanced solicitation, so
it may not be out just yet, but this collects
Rocket Raccoon 2014 issues number 1 through 6.
written by Scotty Young, penciled by Scotty Young
and Felipe Andrade, covers by Scotty Young, Rocket
Raccoon has been a hero to the weak, a champion
of the good, and a heartthrob to many intergalactic
females, but his high -flying life of adventure
may be a thing of the past when he's framed for
murder, and the authorities aren't the only ones
on his tail. Get it? The real killer is an imposter
who seems to be one step ahead of Rocket every
turn. Now it's up to our hero and his best pal
Groot to find the truth. With Macho Gomez and
the X -Terminators tracking him down, can Rocket
make it out alive and clear his name? Superstar
creator Scotty Young brings his A -game as writer
and artist on the series we've been waiting decades
for. Because really, Rocket and Groot are the
only guardians of the galaxy you actually care
about. right yeah no this is uh scotty young's
got a very ab I want to say abstract style but
if you love if you love rocket in the movie you
will love this comic book it is he is the dashing
rogue he is everything uh that star lord is and
more and he's also kirtan furry Yeah Alright
folks, so that's gonna do it for this you know
actually that I don't know if I'll pick up a
hardcover version of this But once it hits trade
I will more than likely pick this up for for
Guardians of the Galaxy rocket raccoon Because
I I did dig I did see Guardians of the Galaxy,
folks, and I did enjoy it. I just didn't have
this, like everybody else, like you and all my
other friends on Facebook and Twitter, just basically
had this mind -numbing, mind -blowing reaction
to the fact that they were actually doing it.
Everyone was so attached to those trailers and
everything else. I just didn't have that kind
of reaction to it, because I didn't know a lot
about the... If it's Transformers or Turtles
or something, I already know I will have that
kind of reaction to it. But if it's something
I don't know about, I go in like kind of like
like walking on eggshells almost. But I did see
Guardians and I did enjoy it and I did enjoy
Rocket and Groot. So I'll probably pick this
up. Oh, yeah. Eventually. And it's it's almost
all Rocket like the other Guardians show up.
But this is, you know, it's a straight up Rocket
the Raccoon tail. Right, so, you know those like
well, I don't want to read another Gurdians comic.
No, this is straight -up rocket raccoon Yeah,
and that's what's awesome about it. Yeah. All
right, folks Those are the January solicitations
