me this time around is Long time co -host of
the gcrn has been on many of our podcasts specifically
the transformers ones cuz he likes stealing toys
from target or Breaking into back rooms. We have
Michael Wilson here on a comic origins episode.
You might be asking yourself Why is the toy guy
on the comic podcast? Well, you read comics,
right? I read comics I read comics Yes, actually
I read a lot of comics I'm actually surprised
that there is not a... I'm really surprised IDW
never did a Hasbro thing with Rescue Bots, honestly,
for a comic. I'm really surprised at that. Well,
it depends on who your target audience is. I
mean, you know, the target audience for Rescue
Bots is like three to five, six year olds. And
that's your pre -reading group. So I don't think
that they're... they would be making comic books
for kids who can't read to read well the new
the new robots in disguise is like seven eight
-year -olds I mean it's not exactly it's got
some adult humor in it but it's not as obviously
it's not as dark as prime was and they've got
a new ongoing series for that yeah I've seen
a little bit of that and I'm not sure who that
target audience is either. What is this? All
right, so was there... Was there a parent, a
family member, a friend, whoever it was, was
there someone that said when you were a kid,
here, here's a comic, go away, you bother me?
No, nothing like that. Really? So who was it
that got you into comics? It was all me, baby!
There's a story here I'll tell you the story
that's the point of this podcast exactly I'll
tell you the story so the story goes I Can you
want to go really far back my parents divorced
when I was five I was in a broken home How did
you get into comics not necessarily? I'm getting
to it. So what happens is I'm visiting my dad
my sister and I would visit my dad and in my
old hometown and You know, we didn't have much
to do so we would walk downtown and The downtown
area had a comic book store and we'd never been
in there before But we walked past it because
we used to walk to the library Which didn't have
comic books, but you know, we had nothing better
to do so on the way to the library past the comic
book store there's a big picture window and right
in the front window is a copy of elf quest number
18 I believe it's 18 on the cover of elf quest
number 18 is an elf in full wolf armor and it
was the most striking image I had ever seen and
I think I might have been in fifth grade at the
time and it was just like wow That's amazing.
I have to go in there and look at this. So I
looked at it and I got my dad to buy me the copy.
I went back, got some money, walked back, bought
the comic book, and I just fell in love with
ElfQuest. That was my thing for a long time.
And I wanted Wendy and Richard Peeney to come
visit me and have dinner. That's that was kind
of like my lifelong dream there when I was in
fifth grade and and you know, what's weird is
I look back and it's like man, I wouldn't let
my little kid read off quest because Especially
like issue 17 was the inappropriate one that
contained the elf orgy which was yeah, exactly
Please tell me we're not gonna go into that TP
stuff and I'm not talking about toilet paper
No, no, please tell me when I mean as much as
I like having explicit podcasts on the gcrn The
last thing we need is that this time any references
to teen titans? Just elves having fun around
the campfire Uh, I didn't actually get issue
17 for a while. I went back and got as many back
issues as I could I had a nice little collection
and I used to carry them around in a box. I was
really proud of them Eventually somebody stole
my box I don't really I don't have any of them
anymore, but but that was how I was introduced
to comics Later on So so this is when you're
a kid you said you were in what fifth grade or
so my fifth or sixth grade, yeah So as a kid
after reading elf quest for a while, where did
you go? What was next after elf quest as a kid?
I want to say it wasn't until like the 90s Not
now late 80s. Let's say when I really started
like collecting hardcore. I had a friend of mine
And we would hang out together and read x -men
And this was, oh, I mean, he had a whole collection
of the early X -Men from the 80s. And I'm trying
to remember the name of it, like Chris Claremont.
You know, that whole run. It's just brilliant
stuff, right? And we would literally just sit
and read those. And he had like 100 of them.
So then I started collecting comics when I...
got disposable income after I turned, like, 16,
17. Yeah. And I had so many comics because, you
know, in the 90s, you got into that, you know,
collector's craze where every comic had a foil
cover or a die -cut cover, a lenticular cover,
and you had to buy, like, five or six of the
same thing. Oh, believe me. It's the same today
It is never not been that way since the night
compared to the late 80s early 90s to now it
You know, it's the same way now if you're a comic
collector, I mean Jim and the holograms comic
from IDW the first two issues had a total between
the two of them 20 different covers between the
issue number one and issue number two. Issue
number one had 12. Issue number two had eight.
Wow. Yeah. Well, I'm guessing. I don't know.
I mean, you know my collecting habits. If I've
got one, I have to have them all. And the problem
with that is there's eight. And they're like
four bucks each now, right? So you've got to
buy them all. Well, I think in the. Jim is a
rare case, honestly. Jim is that rare case for
issue number one and issue number two. IDW offered
box sets for $25. You could get five of the covers
of each one. So it was the regular cover and
then there were four other covers that were the
Jim and the holograms and then Pizzazz and the
Misfits and all that. uh... the other covers
for those two issues that add up to the total
twenty between the two of them are like convention
exclusive covers and retail incentive cover covers
that comic book stores like one in ten you know
one in fifteen where they'll pay an exuberant
amount of money for it and then they'll charge
the charge you extra yeah and uh... uh... though
the funniest thing and i don't even know why
this was when i got into reading comics and i
kinda wanted to get back into spider because
as a kid for me i and people who've listened
to pull back for the last three years know this
as a kid i had you know one or two different
spider -man comics from reading or from watching
the animated series so i'm like okay at the time
when i get into comics in 2012 it was like oh
my god amazing spider -man issue 700 it's the
end of everything you know He's expressing a
700 Wow, so so it was one of those things there
was like, oh my god, I Want to get into spider
-man, but I want a different spider -man. I don't
want the same spider -man that I grew up with
I I can see a million Mysterio or or hydro man
or Doc Ock. Yeah stories dealing with Peter Parker,
right? They then after amazing 700 they started
superior spider -man. Oh, I like that run Yeah,
that run was awesome. Superior Spider -Man number
two had a variant cover that was just a white
background with an image of the Superior Spider
-Man in a classic Spider -Man pose. Was it the
Todd McFarland pose where he's in the center
of the web? I don't remember. I'd have to look
it up. Maybe I'll get back to that at the end
of this episode. As far as what the actual pose
was I don't remember but anyway, it was it was
a white background cover With spider -man in
some sort of action pose You know in this in
the superior spider -man colors, whatever. Mm
-hmm the comic book shop wanted $25 for this
thing and I'm like wait what why? Special cover
that's what I yeah, that's what but They marked
it as a retail incentive, but there was nothing
special about the cover Image is just a white
background with spider -man It's nothing at least
I can see if it was like a spider -verse cover
where there's like all of them Yeah, so, you
know something like like that or if they did
I know they don't I know they didn't do this
with spider -man but if they did like a spider
-verse cover with You know Lego spider -verse
and they had all of the spider -verse characters
as As as the Lego characters, you know what I
mean? Yeah that like that is a special cover
a white background with an image of spider -man
on it is not a Very special for to me, right?
So anyway funny go on I'm sorry Get all that
out of your system, it's okay But back in the
day I collected a lot of Punisher And and again,
you know if I have one I have to have them all
so I I would literally pour over the Comic book
price guides and look for appearance of Punisher
And I would I just bought everything I could
And you know sometimes that's like, you know
a buck in the in the dollar bin, you know, and
sometimes that's spider -man 129 You know, which
I still have it's not in great shape That's not
a buck in the no that's not in the one buck bit
anymore. It's not the one anymore. No It may
have been you know You know years ago back in
the day. Yeah. Yeah, I think I got mine for like
50 bucks and it wasn't a great condition, but
it was like, you know what I'm a poor kid From
the Midwest. This is the best I'm gonna be able
to do You know and I picked it up but like and
my buddy when we were younger and reading through
The X -Men, you know, he got a copy of What was
Hulk 181 for that is that I think it's 181 it
was the first Wolverine Yeah, 181 is the first
appearance of Wolverine. Yes. Yeah, he actually
he oh, I don't know if he still owns it I you
know, it's like a friend of mine from high school
I could probably call him and ask him but but
yeah, he had a copy of that and we read it And
it was like well, there's nothing special about
this. He doesn't even look right, you know But
now you go to the comic -con and you see him
on the show for five grand Yeah, it's like It's
you know, it's kind of like did you remember
a couple years ago they had that that show collection
intervention on One of the A &E or something
or I forget how my wife would call them No, don't
even on collection intervention. It's the show
people I'll have a link somewhere in the show
lady goes in and it's you know these These these
guys are these collectors. There was a female
Star Wars collector She goes in and it's kind
of like hoarders, but for people like you yeah
Collect liquor, you know that it's that kind
of thing. Yeah and This one guy sold off half
his comic collection Just to get a Hulk 181 Wow
Yeah Uh, really quickly, while you were telling
your story, I went back. It was, uh, superior
Spider -Man number four and the dynamic pose.
It's a more of a dynamic. It's not just a standard
Spider -Man pose. It's a, it's a dynamic pose
where he is, um, full, full swing arms out and
there's webs all over him, but I'm like $25 for
that. No, thank you. You know, it's just it's
just one of those things that just rubbed me
the wrong way and I'm like, what the hell? Because
I couldn't I couldn't stay in the original the
original cover anyway So you're into the Punisher
that surprises me. Actually, I did not think
you were into the Punisher Yeah, I really liked
the Punisher. Um, the other thing I liked a lot
was the alien versus predator And that was before
they had movies, you know before before the properties
really took off on their own. And yeah, I really,
really liked those. And pretty much any, like
Dark Horse had a bunch of aliens and stuff that
I really liked. And I would collect that. And
then like I said, in the 90s, you know, comic
book collecting exploded and people, all sorts
of people. My aunt, my aunt's like, hey, I hear
comic books are really cool now. Maybe you could
tell me what to get. and which is it's like yeah
because i'm not dorky enough uh people people
who want to know about dorky stuff are contacting
me um well uh who who drew who drew um when the
x -men rebooted in the 90s it was uh oh i don't
know x -men number one and i think i want to
say it was gosh i want to say like jim lee or
somebody Did not do the art for that. I forget
it was a long time ago But like that's one of
those ahead like five comic book covers and you
put them all end to end and it made like a poster
You know and and I bought like one of each and
my aunt bought one of each and now they're worth
about five cents each But it's still a cool poster
it's neat it's cool I have I have a red and stimpy
number one scratch and sniff cover that smells
like puke It smells like vomit and I've got one
in the bag and one out of the bag and I You know,
I if I ever dig these out of the closet and try
to try to smell them again It'll probably smell
the same. It's terrible 20 years later. Oh god,
I still smells they did a lot of weird covers
back then They do a lot of weird covers nowadays,
too DC more than than Marvel honestly DC Almost
every month in the last two or three years has
had a special variant month I know one of the
Harley the current series for Harley Quinn one
of her The variance was a scratch and sniff weed
cover. And I'm like, wait a minute, wait, wait,
wait. You're DC Comics. You're Under Warner Brothers.
You're supposed to be somewhat of a family enterprise.
I mean, granted, you people aren't Disney. But
I mean, come on now. A scratch and sniff weed
cover for Harley Quinn? Give me a break. Yeah.
I don't want to say that's outside of character.
But she does have a plant lady girlfriend. Don't
know what kind of plants she's growing. It's
just saying Yeah So at some point we can't even
put air quotes over girlfriend now that no That's
awesome, I like that and the fan art that's coming
out from that it's just like I Like it I like
it I'm not gonna complain So as I was saying
eventually I stopped collecting comic books and
oh I think I just got I think I was just a broke
college student for a while and just could not
afford comic books at all because they were and
back then they were only two bucks each but my
pull bag had like 20 comics a week it was getting
really ridiculous and so I had to stop I put
all my comics away actually no I got rid of like
half of them so The punishers that were formerly
from the dollar bin, you know, the ones that
would weren't worth anything You probably never
be worth anything. I got rid of all those The
like first appearance of Punisher first Prince
of cable first appearance of Deadpool Those are
all put away plastic bagged and acid -free mylar
I can't even get to them because they're covered
in transformers In the transformer closet way
in the corner can't even get to him I actually
found and I'll be able to put it in the post.
I actually found God, I almost called it fables.
It's not famous I actually found the elf quest
18 cover and I'm looking on here and it says
a dollar 50 so really That's what it says on
there So let's just say back in the day if you
took a dollar 50 and you said you had 20 books
That would be $30. Okay $30 a month or whatever,
however many books you got per month or whatever.
If you take today's prices, let's just say at
$3 .99 times $20, you're basically doubling your
cost. You'd be spending $80 for 20 books at the
current rates. Oh yeah, it was $1 .50 when it
first came out. Yeah. Oh, okay. I thought you
meant how it's just worth currently. I was about
to say, whoa, yipes. No, I'm saying the actual
one. I might have to go buy it again. No, no,
no. Let's clarify for the listeners. I found
the cover you said. the wolf armor cover elf
quest number 18 on the image that i found it
says the cover price is a dollar fifty which
is back in the day no no no i'm not talking about
what it might be today i have no idea what it
might be today i'm just saying is that not a
cool cover though yeah it is a kick -ass cover
i was just walking down the street and my fifth
grade software holy shit this is awesome right
i gotta i gotta look into this and see what this
is all about yeah but but uh i mean i I enjoy
pop culture, and that includes movies and cartoons
and science fiction and comic books. So while
I don't actively collect comic books anymore,
I still keep up. I still enjoy the art. I enjoy
the storylines. And I don't mind reading the
spoilers. So I understand what the Spider -Verse
is. I understand what Superior Spider -Man is,
even though I'm not Spending four bucks a comic
anymore That when um, oh Dreamwave when dreamwave
started doing uh Transformers and it was like,
oh look at this. I'm back in the comics, baby
And I would buy some and they were just so I
mean the art was amazing because we just basically
didn't have any transformers Art at all. There
was no g1 transformers art at all until dreamwave
came out and then suddenly we're inundated with
it and At the time it was really great Even if
it was overly detailed and to block you it was
really great But the stories were horrible and
I just I just couldn't judge They were terrible
just terrible and I couldn't justify spending
that much money on comics. So I gave it up for
a while and When IDW came out with their stuff,
you know at first it was like well that you know
You know the arts different. I don't know But
you know lately and we've had this conversation
before in the in the in the uh The recent past
um lately the writing has just been so amazing
Yeah, yeah, like james rob is just such a fantastic
writer See, that's that's the funny thing and
and I know i'm gonna get crucified for saying
this but Ever since Dark Cybertron ended, ever
since the first big IDW Transformers event, Dark
Cybertron, I've felt less than whole, reading
more than meets the eye. Like, I can't connect
with it anymore. Like, I read up to issue 36,
and then I just couldn't read 37 and 38, and
then I had to jump back on for 39. Because that's
when combiner wars the the next big event combiner
wars combiner wars was great. I thought I mean
Yeah, I have not read the combiner wars yet to
be honest. Oh, yeah. No, I I think I read the
first or maybe the second wind blade uh -huh,
um so yeah somewhere around the the dark cybertron
event I kind of fell off and I want to say because
the writing was disjointed I mean, they really
tried, but, you know, the writing between their
two different series is so different that when
they tried to flip -flop, when they tried to
mesh in all the different storylines, and, I
mean, I like that they did it with different
art styles. It's like, this storyline has this
art style, and this storyline has this art style.
And it was neat. I liked it. It helped to clarify
what you were reading, but... You know, the stories
themselves didn't mesh very well. And the gestalt,
if you will, the sum of its parts didn't come
together. It didn't mesh well for me. It didn't
gel. It didn't congeal. It's about where I dropped
off, really. Yeah. For pretty much all of them.
I don't think I've read even more than meets
the eye, which I loved, which was fantastic.
I don't think I... Don't think I've read since
then I'll have to go back and pick them up. I
mean combiner wars was interesting because It
only has to do with the book formerly known as
robots in disguise and wind blade Like more than
meets the eye is off on its own thing. So it's
not it's not all three of the series coming together
It's two of the three current series that we're
coming together. Yeah, and it just It was really,
really cool. I thought it was really interesting.
And I mean, come on, it's combiners. Everybody
loves combiners, right? I love combiners. I mean,
come on. I actually went out and bought some
combiners. I haven't transformed them yet. They're
still in the packages, but I got like the first
four. I got the Optimus and the Silverbolt. It's
hard for me to justify the price because they're
like 16 bucks each. And it kind of hurts a little
in the pocketbook You know, especially lately
because I've been It's been an expensive year
so far, you know, they had they replaced the
garage door, you know We put in a pool and had
some car trouble and blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah and next thing, you know, we're we're
We're like, hey, I don't think I can justify
spending $16 on on a figure. That was 999 a couple
years ago Yeah, no that yeah, yeah, it's hard.
I mean yeah, I mean I Built the majority of my
collection on deluxe figures that were 9 .99
and now they're they're not I saw all the new
stuff that are coming out. It's like wow. I want
it. I want it all but at the same time it's like
Yeah, I want it all but I could probably lie
a regular g1 Devastator for the same price now
that I that I'm gonna buy The combiner. Yeah,
the combiner wears Devastator. It's like wow,
I could go on eBay and get one main condition
for 150 bucks or Or I could buy this new one
It's a hard sell. Yeah. Yeah at this point what
would yeah, I mean, yeah comics are The difference
between comics and toys, as far as price goes,
is it depends on what type of person you are,
whether you want to... Because I used to be this
way. I recently, I think about a year ago or
so, I've completely changed my ways now that
I learned that a certain option was available
on a PC, not just a tablet or a phone or whatever.
I've always been that person and I know a lot
of people that are like this. I want the physical
copy in my hand I want to be able to actually
hold it, you know, whatever right about a year
ago I found out that Comixology had you know
You could actually use their website on a computer
and you can actually view the comics there and
I'm like digital who needs print I mean, I do
still buy print stuff, but I buy the trades.
I don't buy a lot of single issues anymore, right?
And ever since I found Comixology and their Guided
View, I know some people like viewing just the
one page, but that Guided View, man, it is so
damn good. It takes you through piece by piece.
It's basically like reading its storyboard form.
For people that can't handle looking at an entire
page. Well, yeah frame here you go Like for me
and this is probably because I'm all the stress
I was under last year when my mom was getting
ill. Yeah You know, I'd go to the comic shop
every every Wednesday and I'd be you know happy
and whatever I'd get the books that I want to
get and Come home and be like, okay. Well, I've
got four new comics to read. I really want to
read these comics I really want to see what's
happening next in the books that I'm really reading,
you know, really enjoying. Yeah. Yeah I Pick
up the first one by the fifth page The book is
falling out of my hand because I'm falling asleep
because I'm so tired from everything else I was
doing and it was like I'd rather sit here at
my computer where I know I have to stay awake
or else my head will hit the desk You know, I'd
rather sit here with my little finger on on the
right arrow key and just cycle through and honestly
the guided view is It's a more immersive way
to show the story to me. Yeah pulls you through.
Yeah Exactly. I don't I don't necessarily need
that. Well, like we had this conversation before
where um, you know, i'm going to the comic con
this weekend Mike zech is gonna be there. Mike
zech did the art for the original uh, four -issue
punisher miniseries Oh interesting and it's like
man, uh, you know, well Have a physical copy
of this I can give it to him say could you sign
this for me? I was I was a huge fan and it's
an honor to meet you You know, what are you doing
lately here sign this, please? I can't do that
with a digital copy. Well, no, and I understand
that but I mean, yeah, but see Look at me. How
many conventions have I been to? Well, yeah Lexington
conventions coming up. Are you talking about
that or did it already happen? I don't even know
when that is. That was if I was gonna actually
move to that city. Where you at again? I thought
you were close to Lexington. An hour and a half
away. Oh, never mind. The other major city in
the state, Louisville, Kentucky. But it's one
of those things where... I'm sure Louisville
has a Comic -Con. Yeah, they have several throughout
the year, but nothing... Big as like c2e2 or
oh, you know, we don't have a wizard world No
Chicago's got three of them now. Yeah to wizard
worlds and one c2e2 I'm really surprised that
c2e2 has not as they've progressed through the
years and gotten better and better or worse and
worse I don't know cuz I've never been to the
thing. Yeah, I hear nothing. I hear nothing It's
give or take it depends, you know, I'm really
surprised they haven't gone and changed it every
year. Like after it was C2E2, C3E3, C4E4. Oh,
no, no. The 2 stands for 2. It's the Chicago
Comic and Entertainment Expo. It's two seasons.
Yeah. Sorry. Yeah. Am I over -analyzing? No,
I don't want to. Yeah. So Let me get back to
my story. What was I? Oh, yeah, so so yeah that
brings us into the to the present where we're
mostly I I pick up most my comic knowledge from
like Pinterest now and Tumblr People just post
like pages of comic books on tumblr And then
the link to them and I'll you know, I'll be checking
through through, you know, whatever your Facebook
or something someone will say oh look here's
Somebody links Deadpool and I'll you know, I'll
read half a Deadpool book just sitting on tumblr
See, I can't do that. I mean cuz I want you know,
if I see a cool panel or something. Yeah in my
Cuz I remember a buddy of mine people on that
listen to the podcast will know Joe Reed who
does the turtles the TMNT coverage with me I
showed him the guided view and he's like, oh
wow. This is so fancy This is like, you know
holding your pinkies up in the air Yeah No, it's
really not tea with a pinky in the air Exactly
I showed this to him and I took a couple of screen
caps from from the guided view from certain panels
of certain team and like so I'll take a screen
cap of you know one or two panels or you know
something like that but I would never ever put
a full comic on that that no yeah yeah Just it's
fine. If people want to do that. I'm not you
know, I don't know the copyright people come
on. Yeah That's yeah, I mean it's like, you know
not that I'm complaining because I like to read
it But I'm like I said, I'm not gonna spend four
bucks on one but I don't know the copyright You
know what? I've been reading lately that I've
really enjoyed is the the new Star Wars stuff
that's coming out. Yes Have you caught up on
Darth Vader yet? I only think Darth Vader five
And and at the end of that he was like be introduced
to his replacements, which he was Probably gonna
lay waste to in the very beginning of six But
I hadn't gotten that far five Last time I talked
to you it was only issue three. Oh, yeah Well,
you know and I really like the supporting characters
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I like that I like the the
kind of Weird chaotic neutral Indiana Jones girl,
you know, I kind of like her. That's dr. Afri.
Yeah, I like her and I mean I like how she's
just so blunt with him. She's just like She knows
she knows her place. Yeah, she she knows she's
gonna die any day He's like, you know when it
happens could can I please have you know chop
off my head with a lightsaber? Cuz I think that
would be cool, you know, it's like Yeah, all
right. Where's Mace Window when you really need
him? Yeah, and you gotta wonder, like, what does,
uh... What do you think Vader's thinking about
this? He's just like, this chick is so weird.
He's just... You know, he's all ready to break
character and be like, all right, settle down.
But he doesn't. He's still Vader. He's, you know...
See, that's the coolest thing about... That's
the coolest thing about the current run with
the Darth Vader series written by Kieran Gillian
is that I Don't want to see Vader outside of
his own Oh God if they if he took him if the
writers took him out of character That would
just be so off -putting to me. No, you know No,
not necessarily cuz like I I forget I don't remember
what comic it was, but I've seen pieces of it.
You've got Oh, it was Vader in Bespin and Vader
he just lost Luke Skywalker. No, no, he hadn't
seen Luke Skywalker. Vader was in Bespin and
it was before Chewie found C -3PO in the garbage.
And they said, oh Lord Vader, we stumbled across
this droid and if we hadn't destroyed it, it
would have... It would have alerted our quarry,
you know and vader recognizes him And he kind
of takes his his golden head. This is disembodied
golden head And he kind of touches his forehead
to it, you know, and he he remembers building
c3po And he remembers, you know c3po from the
original trilogy, you know, and he had he kind
of has this thought he's got this, you know this
reminiscence in his head and then He passes it
back and says Destroy it all Yeah, and then they
take it down to the trash bin where the og nuts
get it Yeah, no, what I'm saying is I don't want
to I don't that's touching that I wouldn't have
expected that scene, you know, and I knew he
was there I knew see 3p. It was there. I wouldn't
have expected him to go. Oh, yeah I built this
guy when I was you know eight Yeah, that was
that was it was touching but at the same time.
He's just like destroy it all Have you seen any
of the Ultimate Spider -Man cartoon, the current
one that's going on? Yes, yeah. You know those
times that Spidey breaks in? Does the Ferris
Bueller thing and talks to the audience freeze
frame and then they just kind of like hey, yeah
That's that's what I'm talking about. I don't
ever know you don't see that Yeah, you don't
want to see that she be Darth Vader in the corner
going. Let me tell you about this one time Super
deformed Darth Vader in the corner with a little
teardrop by his head I I've been reading the
Darth Vader series that The Princess Leia five
-issue mini -series, I kind of dropped off on
that one. And I read the first... Is it finished
yet? I've only got to three. Yeah, Princess Leia.
It was only a five -issue mini -series. I think
the current Lando series that just came out is
only going to be five issues too. The main ongoing
Star Wars that Marvel has now, the new ongoing,
I need to catch up with that. I've only read
the first issue. I liked it, but I've just got
so... Because how I really at this point Deem
my comic reading is it depends on what I need
for the show what I need for the podcast so it's
like like I read up to like I said dark side,
you know, I read starting at death of office
primal of the dark Cybertron and Combiner Wars
and all that but like my first IDW transformers
book pre death of optimist prime was last end
of the records and i just read that like a month
and a half ago i've always wanted to read that
i never did it's supposed to be good alright
so the age -old question and i have no idea which
which side of the fence you fall on uh... marvel
or dc or some other indy publisher you know uh...
uh... also i see you fall into that if some other
indy publisher trap for a long time i was i was
really in the dark horse because they had the
alien versus predator they had the star wars
uh... they they you know i i just liked that
stuff uh... but them between the big two i always
liked uh... marvel better Because I just wasn't
a fan of that Golden Age stuff the Well, you
know, I kind of equate Superman with Golden Age
Superman. I kind of equate Wonder Woman with
Golden Age Wonder Woman Batman not so much because
you know, you've got you've got dark and gritty
Batman that everyone's familiar with because
of the movies But even then it's like yeah, it's
Batman everyone knows who Batman is we've seen
the movies but hey look at this X -Men stuff
and Me and like Wolverine. I really liked Wolverine
There was a there was a comic Done by Tim vigil
in the late 80s mid to late 80s called the grips
and Grips was like a blatant ripoff on Wolverine.
It was this this heavily muscled vigilante who
had giant blades on his on his wrists You know
and and the exception was is it was so bloody
and so gross and like he came across this this
this uh pair it was like oh what were they they
were like uh they were like venezuelan twins
that were child molesters and they were like
short you know like chubby and yet heavily muscled
guys in gladiator uniforms, you know, and they
and they were on the lookout for small boys and
grips finds them and you know catches them in
the act and and One guy just cuts his cuts as
a manhood off and stuffs it in his mouth and
says you'll no longer be feeding this to young
boys You can eat it and it's like dude. This
is this is harsh I want to say when I was reading
this I was I wasn't 18 yet because at a certain
point Oh It was Faust at a certain point I tried
to buy Faust which is another comic by Tim vigil
and And the guy wouldn't let me he's like no
kid. You're not old enough. You're not 18. You
can't buy it but Wizard from DC Wizard from what?
Faust no no Faust was a Faust was was a comic
about a guy who he was insane And he saw everything
he saw was was like in hell so he had to reconcile
his his You know what what he saw versus reality
and the reality was you know He was in the same
asylum and his he had a therapist who was trying
to help him But at the same time he he he was
the only one that could see the danger that she
was actually in And it was it's it's it's kind
of deep but at the same time It's Tim Vigil art
Tim Vigil just wants to make everything bleed
in exquisite detail And I actually met him a
few times. Um Not very talkative, you know, but
you know, it's like hey I was a really huge Faust
fan and grips and and I had a copy of like grips
number one That's probably still in a box somewhere.
Oh and Joseph Michael Lindsner he did cry for
dawn I've got all the old cry for dawn stuff
and some of it is signed by him and Joe monks
Who was the original writer back in the 80s who
Tim vigil no longer speaks to for I don't know
reasons Yeah, yeah, but that guy yeah, he's a
jerk Never meet your idols kids, you know, I
mean when I was when I was a teenager I used
to draw like cry for dawn stuff in a sketch pad
tried, you know I drew a lot, you know, I tried
to tried to imitate what his work and You know,
and it was like well I even had a video it was
like the making of cry for dawn and it was like
this old VHS cassette had had this guy in it
and you know, he had like the same background
as me and and it was It was like, wow, I can
identify with this guy. And when you meet him,
he's just like, yeah, I don't know. You get the
fuck away. It's like, oh, yeah. It's like, oh,
you're breaking my heart here. I'm such a huge
fan. He's like, yeah, go away. Go away, kid.
You bother me. I'm trying to draw you. It's it's
May. May he rest in peace, but it's kind of like,
you know, Leonard Nimoy at a convention. Uh,
well, let's we gotta clarify. Leonard Nimoy at
a convention in the 70s, you know, because The
renaissance of the of the uh of uh Star trek
really benefited him because he was in the next
generation as Spock, you know And he was in the
new movies the jj amor's movies as Spock And
he was making money as Spock, but there was this
period of time when he wasn't directing Star
Trek movies and he wasn't in anything Star Trek,
where he was just sick of that character and
didn't want anything to do with it. Well, right,
but I'm talking about a few years ago somebody
told me a story it might have been you it might
have been somebody else I can't remember who
told me the story basically told me is actually
I think it was proto man or some I don't remember
anyway They told me this story where they were
going to meet Leonard Nimoy at a convention This
is recently with least within the it has to be
in the last seven years that I podcasted Leonard
Nimoy line, obviously four and a half five hours.
Oh, yeah. Yeah You know, you gotta meet this
guy before he dies. Oh, too late. Yeah. Oh, wow.
Where's the rim shot after that one? I felt the
same way when I met Stan Lee. I'm like, you know
what? I'm paying 80 bucks to meet Stan Lee because
he could die next year. This guy's like 90. It's
one of those things where this Leonard Nimoy
encounter basically was, you know, you got there,
he had everybody waiting in line for three to
four hours, you got up there and, oh, I'm taking
a lunch break, so you had to wait even longer.
Yeah. You guys gotta eat, man. It's crazy. I'm
going to eat now. Okay, so besides the Transformers,
are there any other comics currently that you're
interested in? Or that you're reading nuts. Well,
you know, there's there's a star war stuff. Um,
yeah and And uh, you know, uh, I think that's
about it I I don't so much read I don't buy the
books anymore, you know, I i'll get i'll i'll
read part of it here part of it there or uh You
know or I I hear spoilers someone's gonna post
it somewhere And as much as it's appreciated
that people post non -spoiler reviews, at the
same time, I'd rather read the spoiler reviews
because then I get the story. I know what's happening.
I like it when people compare stuff to older
storylines because it's like, oh, now you've
got this new spider -verse or a new universe
within the spider -verse where Peter Parker is
still married to Mary Jane and versus the one
last day. Sorry, was it one last day or one final
day where where he makes it? Yeah, he makes them
deal with Mephisto and he's no longer married
and Everybody hated that and you know, and I
understand what what thought process went into
that and I understand why they tried to back
out of it But You know if I hadn't read these
spoilers, I I would not be caught up on these
storylines because I don't actually read the
comic It depends like when I write comic reviews
because I've been running comic reviews for the
last few years on geekcastradio .com It depends
on if I want to like if I have that inkling to
After I read the comic. Oh my god. Let's go ahead
and go through the process of grabbing images
Yeah, let's go ahead and start writing the review
right now and if it's like if I write the review
the day of release Then I will put spoiler free
if I write it like Week after that books been
out. Yeah, then to hell with the spoilers like
my Darth Vader written reviews. I was like three
months behind Like I had stopped it at writing
the reviews at like issue three and I'm like,
okay read issue four issue five and issue six
and issue seven and but you know blah blah blah
and all this and all that yeah, and i'd just
said that all that it's been months since this
has been out and i'm just gonna spoil the crap
out of it you know you know if people like it
they like it if they don't they don't uh... uh...
you know what are you all are you since you know
for those that don't know on the pullback and
as michael's kind of alluded to uh... earlier
he has a collection of transformers toys Do this
collection is the only collection his wife allows
him to have not a lot of except with the exception
of One Perry the Platypus and Dr. Doof insurance
thing. That's right Yeah With you only being
allowed to have one collection, are you going
to get your sons into reading comics? Not necessarily
saying that that is going to be their collecting
things, because I'm sure that you're going to
let them collect the toys. Right. But are you
getting Aiden and Gavin into comics at all? I
have tried and it didn't take. We have a local
comic book store and I'm friends with the owner.
He's a nice guy. You know, he does a lot of neat
things for the community. He likes wrestling
He brings a lot of wrestlers in like Jake the
snake Roberts was here at his shop not too long
ago Yeah, yeah, it was cool. Um, some other guys
I don't I don't recognize them unless they're
really old, you know Like like making the rounds
at Comic Con old But yeah, but yeah, I mean he
I like to bring the kids in there every so often
And, you know, Gavin likes the Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles, and I've gotten him a couple turtles.
But he's just not comfortable enough reading
at that level. Like I said, you know, you have
this target audience and not old enough. He's
not he's not really there yet. He's well, I mean,
he's a second grade. He really should be. Yeah,
he should be ready. But and Aidan, Aidan can
read at that level. Yeah. He just doesn't want
to yeah, I mean we're we're reading chapter books
now Every night like earlier tonight. We read
a chapter of a book But I mean at the third grade
level, but for some reason you know it's like
you give him a comic book And he's like oh, yeah,
that's nice. Thanks. You know he puts it aside
He looks at the pictures and takes a pass on
it Yeah I'll suggest for Gavin And I'm sure you
know they had this IDW has the TMNT It was the
new animated adventures it's now rebranded as
Amazing adventures or something or other regular
adventures. It's no it's there regular adventures.
It's It's the comic that IDW does that doesn't
necessarily tie into the current cartoon but
it's based on the current cartoon. You know what
I mean? It's based on those designs, those characters.
I think that's the one. He's got four or five
issues of that. Well, this one, this soft reboot
or so, I think it is called Amazing Adventures
now. They just released it, a new number one.
So, you know, you could maybe... haven't checked
that out. Check that one out, yeah. I'm trying
to think, well, they both like superheroes, right?
Yeah, yeah, no, they both like superheroes. They
could, you could maybe try them out on, you can
maybe try them out on DC's six -issue mini -series
that's currently going on Batmite. It's a fun
book. It's written by Dan Jergens and the artist
by Corin Howell. I read an interview with Dan
and Corrin and in I forget where they might have
been on Comicvine .com, I don't remember. In
the interview, Corrin says her art style for
Batmite is, her inspirations are stuff like Looney
Tunes and Tiny Tunes and Animaniacs and this
book is very that kind of style of drawing and
coloring. But it's just so fun. The latest issue
that's come out was issue number three. And it's
the premise of the Batmite six -issue miniseries
is, Batmite's already helped Batman. He's done.
He needs to help the rest of the heroes. So the
first two issues - I can always hear the quotes
around help. Yeah. The first two issues was a
two -parter where he was trying to help Hawkman.
The third issue, he's trying to help Damian Wayne.
Everybody should know by now my thoughts on Deckhead
Damian Wayne. I don't know them. I cannot stand
that character. Worst Robin ever. In Batmite
number three, they actually, between the writing
and the art, they actually make me almost enjoy
Damian only because it's Batmite that's having
to deal with him. So it's a fun little book.
Another one I will suggest, even though you'll
probably rake me over the coals for it, is certain
issues of Scooby -Doo Team Up might be a good
thing for the boys. Okay. I'll buy that, sure.
There's two issues that I'm thinking about in
particular. There's one where Scooby and the
gang team up with the Flintstones, and the next
one is they team up with the Jetsons. The current
run of it, the current issues that are out now,
I think he's teaming up with Secret Squirrel.
So that might be some fun kind of stuff. I don't
know. So Yeah, I think what other recommendations
can I give for you because I'm trying to think
here, um, it's really hard You know for that
for the age range, you know, yeah Well, I'm just
saying like I'm trying to think of for you. I'm
trying to think of what I can recommend that
I've read for you if you're into like the If
you've ever liked any kind of the Robin Hood
mythology for something that's gonna basically
twist all that around, I would check out Xenoscope's
Robin Hood series. That's the one with the girl
with cleavage? Yeah. Yeah, okay. To be... to
clarify... Yeah. I like boobs, you know? Alright.
Yeah, but that's beside the point. I found an
old interview with the owners of Xenoscope Entertainment,
and one of the questions in that was about the
covers and how revealing they are. The co -owners
or the co -publishers said, well, we do that
for the fans, for the people who are getting
the single issues when they do the trades, because
the trades are usually ending up in Barnes and
Noble and stuff like that, and they're ending
up in bookstores and stuff like that. They kind
of tone it down. They kind of tone it back. Yeah,
that's fair. Honestly, the more striking you
can make a cover, the more likely that people
who are just walking through the comic store
are going to see it. It goes back to ElfQuest
18. That's a striking cover. A lot of people
walk by and see a really cool looking cover,
and they go, wow, that's something I need to
check out. I've seen a lot of crappy covers.
It just makes you want to pass. See, I try to
avoid the crappy covers. This is one of the reasons
why. In the in the two or three years of the
pullback has been around since I've been doing
this show I Have found out in doing like the
Punisher month that we did and doing them a couple
of marvelous marches that we've done That I'm
not a fan and even when we did the Batman month
this year and last year I'm not a fan of anything
really Before 1999, honestly, as far as the art
style goes, as far as the covers go, it just
doesn't appeal to me at all. Because I wasn't
collecting comics in the 80s and 90s. You know
what the cutoff for me is? Oh, Criminy. What's
the name? Spawn. Spawn is published by... I'm
a terrible fan for not knowing the top cow. No,
no top cow. It was also published by People probably
screaming people are screaming. Yeah, so in the
90s, right you had the these Comic artists who
said we're sick Not having the rights to our
own characters at DC and Marvel. So they all
came together. Yeah, we'll we'll sport a chio
and and and that one guy who did X -Force and
He did young heel so they came together. They
did young blood. They did spawn. They did silver
Hawk silver Nighthawk was the guy's just like
a silver Hawk that broke people's spines that
guy The the the savage dragon The max, you know
all of these came from the same publisher That
was that was creamage image. They were image
comics. Damn it image comics, you know, and when
I When I you know first really started getting
into it in the comic collecting image was had
just formed And it was like, wow, this spawn
is awesome. And the reason it was awesome was
because they didn't have the traditional 18 -color
coloring system. It wasn't like four colors printed
on newsprint. It was beautiful. Each one was
like a painting. And that is where you draw the
line between older comics and the modern. Modern
stuff Yeah That's where I draw the line. Anyway,
I mean you even like like the Star Wars stuff
that came out of Dark Horse the oh What was the
name of the the one that was? Early gosh was
Luke Skywalker is tempted to the dark side by
a clone of the Empire Dark Empire Okay, and it
was all done. It was all done in watercolor It
was a beautiful, beautiful comic and it had glossy
covers and it was fully painted. It was just,
you know, it's like, wow, I can have a copy of
this or I could have a copy of, you know, the
classic Marvel stuff that was in eight colors,
you know, printed on newsprint. It's like, no,
I want to go for this watercolor beauty here.
Yeah, you go for the watercolors more than the...
Yeah. It's like the new watercolor stuff or do
I want like reprints of the Marvel stuff that
that featured a? Seven foot tall green rabbit,
you know, it's like what? There's a benefit there,
you know Yes, although all this old crappy green
rabbit stuff or do I want the new hotness, you
know, and I got all the new hot Oh God, I can't
believe you just pulled out a black reference
Old and busted. Old and busted. You're hot in
this. That's right. Old and busted. I can't believe
you just pulled that out. Alright, I'm trying
to think of other suggestions that I can give
you. I'm happy with following up little by little
with the Transformers and the... You know, and
again, like the spoilers, I wish I knew more
about the whole Wolverine thing. So Wolverine
dies and then, like, anyone who has any type
of strain of Wolverine DNA in them suddenly comes
out of the woodwork to claim the title. Oh, you're
talking about the Wolverine's ongoing or the
Wolverine's... Yeah, and I'm like, this is interesting,
but I... Yeah, I'm confused. Again, I haven't
read it and I haven't read enough spoilers. And
it's like, I'd like to learn more, but... Haven't
even I think I think and this is a huge spoiler
for people who listen to the pull bag I don't
want us to do more Marvelous March stuff. Yeah,
I believe in 2016 for Marvelous March. We were
going to be covering death of Wolverine and potentially
First couple issues of Wolverine's I have not
gotten into any of that I knew they I knew they
were killing him Yeah, and I knew they were going
to do the Wolverine's thing because I saw it
in the solicitations But they're doing the same
damn thing over at DC with we are Robin and it's
like wait, why did they kill Robin? Oh, well,
they killed Damien Wayne and then they brought
him back Like how have you been? No, I see they
got a red hood now. Yeah. Yeah, but they I don't
know. The whole Damian Wayne thing is just a
whole soapbox. I don't want to get on. But basically
what happened was they killed Damian Wayne. They
then sent Batman on a journey to find his body
and get him back from Ra's al Ghul and blah,
blah, blah, blah, blah, whatever the hell happened.
I don't know. I didn't read it. I read parts
of it. I just couldn't. Couldn't handle it. I
just don't have enough vested interest in Damien
Wayne to really give a crap. I Saw him in the
car. I saw him in one of the animated movies
Yeah, I mean in the movies he's he's still a
dickhead he's fine, but at least it's at least
it's animation Yeah, it's not it's something
you can actually watch. I don't know. Yeah but
basically they brought that they killed and they
brought him back and they did this whole year
-long event called Batman eternal and Now they're
gonna be doing a six -month event called Batman
and Robin eternal But they also have this new,
I don't know if it's a six -issue mini -series
or what it's supposed to be, but they have this
new series called We Are Robin, where it's basically
to play to the teenagers of this generation that
everybody has a damn cell phone, everybody's
on Facebook, everybody's on Twitter, and all
the... Well, I got the impression it was like
they formed their own little Robin court. And
yeah, they're you know, they're all trying to
you know, they're trying to clean up the streets
You know vigilante style by using the the Robin
moniker, which is it's all well and good But
you got to remember Robin was already an athlete
and an acrobat before he met Well, Tim Drake
let's say was was was already an athlete an acrobat
before he met Batman and then Batman taught him
how to fight and detect Tim was That's a whole
other bag, but you're think the acrobat and the
circus yeah, no that was that was the flying
Grayson's the flying gravestones I Just told
somebody's joke. I thought it was so funny. I
don't remember who said it though I think it
might have been it might have been under who
said that When I read yeah when I listened to
his he did say flying gravestones. That's funny
funny stuff He is hilarious. Yeah, I I dig him
I've met him once or twice and each time I meet
him. He doesn't recognize me but But yeah, he
really good guy. I like him Any other comic stuff
any other stories you want to tell comic stories
do I You know what I don't like? I don't like
Transformers that are bundled with comics Yeah,
because it's like, you know, I've already read
the comic and now I'm kind of reluctant to open
the package because there's a comic inside But
isn't that supposed to basically entice people
to either buy one or the other? Isn't that just
a giant toy ad really? I mean, come on the comic
is basically a giant toy ad I mean, you can't
tell me that because now it's like combiner wars.
Well, that's a toy ad um you know and that's
not i didn't get go down that path but it's like
more than meets the eye is not a toy ad oh no
wait yeah it is but no well more than meets the
eye in the our book formerly known as robots
in disguise the main transformers they're not
technically toy ads but the two events that they've
done dark cybertron and combiner wars they made
the hasbro made idw turn it into a toy ad yeah
don't get me wrong Combiner Wars story was awesome
the end of Dark Cybertron. I would say the last
two issues was damn good considering its shockwave.
Yeah, but Yeah, the rest of both of them. They're
just Well, it's annoying because it's like oh
look we have our Armada or Starscream says I
have the shiny new Armada a Transformers body
and and look there's a deluxe sized Armada Starscream
on them on the shelves right now It's like that
was like the worst body ever. It was just like
I want to say it was a crappy mold, but it was
a mold based around a gimmick that should have
died a long time ago. Why are we still seeing
this? When they gave him that body in the comic,
I was like, what the flying? Yeah. I was like,
we have such high. Yeah. And now they've brought
him back to his traditional G1 colors. Did they?
Oh, well. Everything looks better in Starscream
colors, but at the same time it's like a fall
of Cybertron Starscream awesome mold Fantastic
fantastic figure Well, you know, he looks really
good. We'll put it that way. Yeah, why couldn't
he why couldn't he stay with that? Well, because
that's not what's on the shelves right now. Sorry.
Yeah. Yeah, so I mean that bothers me uh... it's
like if i wanted a comic i'd go buy a comic i
don't want a comic i want a toy i want to open
up and play with it it's like i want a toy at
a decent price point but because you shove the
comic in there it's seventeen bucks now no i
don't think so i honestly don't care it has nothing
to do with the comic all the deluxe toys cost
seventeen bucks not just the ones with comics
it has nothing to do with them Slipping in a
very slim. What is that? Maybe a five page book
six page, but really I don't know I haven't opened
it. I can't I don't know how many are in there
I don't know how many pages are in it, but I
don't know I'd have to ask somebody who has opened
one, but I saw so I saw somebody in a video review
that did one and he kind of Opened the comic
and kind of flipped through it and it looked
like there was only four or five. I don't know
Well, it makes you wonder if you have a copy
of the comic and you take all the ads out, how
many real pages do you have left? In a standard
comic, 20 pages. You're supposed to have 20 pages
no matter what. Yeah. IDW, basically anybody
that's not Marvel in DC usually puts all their
ads at the back of the book. After they tell
the story like every every IDW issue at this
point It's all story and then the ads and stuff
is at the back of the book So you're not you
know, you're not counting. I did this in the
early days of the pullback I used to actually
count ad pages as I would go through a comic
and review it Okay, so we've got this kind of
story right here and this is going on and Batman's
doing this and Nightwing's doing this and Batgirl's
hanging upside down and then oh wait Here's an
ad for game of jones or the here's an ad for
uh... uh... lego land star wars bulls it's like
yeah okay so and pick one two three four five
donnie that's another's yeah for what i'm reading
now uh... dc is like having half -page ads in
the middle of the story which you know you know
the artists probably hate you know because they
I don't want to say they get paid by the panel,
but they're used to creating pages. And maybe
one page gets pushed to the next page because
there's a full page ad there. That's one of the
greatest things about digital. No ads. No ads.
I understand it's not a physical copy. I understand
you can't take it to a convention and have somebody
sign it. But as a reader of comic books at this
point, For me, digital is the way to go. It's
the way to go. Digital, and if you actually want
the print comics for signing at comic conventions,
get the trades. Yeah. You know, that's the best
advice I can give. Or get yourself a copy of
Transformers Legacy. There you go. That's not
necessarily a comic, but yes. That's not such
a comic, but it makes a good signature piece.
Oh, absolutely. You have like a million of them
on there now, don't you? Yeah, it's awesome.
All right. Where can the people find you online,
sir? I'm in the same place I've been for the
last six years or so. You know, Facebook, Twitter.
Six years? You've only been on Twitter for six
years? No, no, no, no. I mean, I was going to
say how long have we been doing this? Oh, yeah.
Six years. Something like that. But yeah, no,
I think I've been on Twitter for like seven or
eight. Yeah, it's been forever Yeah, so p -concord
