IDW’s TMNT Issues #37-38: Shredder and Krang’s Collision

ladies and gentlemen, I know I've been kind of

Out of it the last month or so. We just posted

episode 89 or last week where Jeremy fine and

I talked about Avengers and X -Men Access issue

number one. I had a slight meltdown in that episode.

It just... Real life, as I said in the last few

episodes, people has been kicking my ass royally.

But we are here for a giant size episode 90 and

91. We're going to be talking about TMNT, IDW's

TMNT issues 37 and 38. Along with me I have Joe

Reed. Hello, sir. Hello! How are you? I am doing

well. That's good. That's good. So a couple of

bits of news, I guess. Well, apparently, ladies

and gentlemen, I was asleep during San Diego

Comic Con this year because I completely missed

the part about a certain voice actor coming back

to do a different character in the 2012, season

three of the 2012 Turtles cartoon on Nickelodeon.

The link will be in the show notes. It is an

old ass story, but I figured we'd talk about

it now. Robbie Wriste, who voiced Michelangelo

in all three Turtles films, the original Turtles

films, is going to be voicing Mondo Gecko in

the 2012 animated series, which is now in Season

3. So that's going to be interesting because

I went back and I'm actually watching right now

the original episode where Mondo was introduced

in the old series And I have no idea who voices

the character. I can't tell I Can't tell by listening

to the voice whose voice it is It's crazy The

other bit of news I think we'll kind of get this

out of the way here Is that Joe is comic famous

now, aren't you? Hey, I feel immortalized. Yes.

The feeling has has worn off from initially realizing

that I was in the letters column of 37. But yeah,

it feels it really feels like I've graffitied

all over my my favorite thing. I mean, in a good

way or like. you can point at it from far away

and say, I did that. And it's like, you know,

gonna be there forever. I mean, there will be

people collecting this comic 50 years from now,

who will be able to flip through it and see my

letter in this letters column. Basically, just

to, unless you want to read it yourself, but

go to issue 37 of the IDW TMNT, ladies and gentlemen,

go to the back of the book and read Joe's letter.

You basically talk about, you know, nobody and

that was the character and whatever else. So,

you know, that you were really surprised that

came in. And I believe it's Bobby that does Reply

to the letters and he says in reply to you. Thanks

Joe Glad you liked our version of nobody Really

excited for what's in store for her all credit

for angel becoming nobody goes to Kevin Eastman

He brought up a twist during a brainstorming

session and Tom and I were instantly psyched

and indeed So am I I only hope she gets a one

-shot and then a mini series She'll get a miniseries.

I unless it's her own adventure Yeah, it's she's

one of Mirage's best Create characters that weren't

the turtles and and he would he was a he in the

old Mirage series And because he was one of the

better ones he's underutilized I think as it

the the whole plot the whole premise of the character

being a cop who then has this secret Vigilante

life. No powers just did his but kind of Batman

thing on a much smaller scale I mean that that

sounds like it could be a self -sustaining story

to me at least for a while and I think with nobody

and hurt the new nobody with angels ties to the

gangland and and being inside like that and Being

angry at it all. I think that's also something

that could support a a small story Absolutely.

Absolutely. So As I said, we're going to be talking

about issues 37 and 38. Issue 37, it's been a

long time coming. Oh indeed. So we are going

to actually, I'm actually going to put in here

before we take a quick break, I'm going to put

in the first meeting of Shredder and Crank from

the old animated series. We'll be back after

Terrific. We're on the run, and that idiot wants

to chit -chat. Well, what is it? Ah, Saki, my

old shred. I told you. Call me the Shredder.

You wouldn't be shredding anything if it weren't

for me. I have given you vast technical knowledge,

but you have not fulfilled your half of the bargain.

All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back

here inside the pull bag in issue 37. The cover

is Shredder on the left, Krang on the right,

and the technodrome in the background. This is

the meeting that was teased to us off air. by

Bobby Kerna when we did the interview gosh it

feels like forever ago yeah it does doesn't it

which means that this artwork was done forever

ago yeah absolutely um because back in the interviews

like have you not seen the the solicits and I

immediately put myself on mute in the interview

when looking for the solicits for this issue.

I'm like, Oh yeah, I've got no idea what solicits

are. I just, I go to the comic store and I get

the issues. Occasionally I'll see something in

comic shop news, the free magazine newspaper

thing that they give out, but no, I don't see

anything ever like that. So it's If you don't

want to be spoiled, sometimes it's best not to

look at solicitations. But what solicitations

basically are is, you know, the comic companies

put out solicitations. It's basically really

for the previews catalog. It's really what it's

for. It's for comic shops. I guess it gives them

an idea about what they should order and they

can tell people, you should order this issue,

guys. And then sites around the internet will

go through, you know, sites like comicbookresources

.com, newsarama .com. They will have a catalog

of all of the solicitations from a specific company,

whether it's IDW, whether it's Marvel, DC, Image,

Dark Horse, whatever it is. And they'll go month

to month and it'll have those issues that are

going to be releasing. So like right now, we're

into November and December solicits. So I'm thinking

maybe by the end of the show, we could talk about

what's coming up in issue 39 and 40, if I can

find it before the end of the show. I don't even

know what's coming up. Well, that's the point.

I will find it. So anyway. Anyway, issue 37,

the main cover, is Shredder and Crank's Technodrome.

I love this cover, because this is the first

we've ever really seen the outside of the Technodrome.

I mean, we've seen kind of what the inside looks

like a little bit, but not much. Now the Retailer

Incentive cover... Technodrome in the middle,

but it has those Forks on the front and sides.

It's looking a little more like the animated

old -school Technodrome minus the eye I really

think that the eye going on top is going to be

the The the the candle on top of the icing on

top of the cake that that moment will know That

oh, no things have gone bad when the eye appears,

but that one looks just like the old -school

Technodrome cranks on the top of that and shredder

with foot soldiers behind him's on the bottom

half of it But, uh, I like that. So yeah, so

far the Technodrome's really kind of been like

Return of the Jedi, incomplete, hinted at in

the background, it's still under construction.

Yeah. All's I can think of is a stupid argument

between Dante and Randall and the clerks about

the - It was still full of contractors. That

was mass murder. They weren't conscripts in the

Imperial Army, they were drywallers. That's all

I can think about now. Freakin' clerks. So the

story so far, Rokosaki betrayed an utram known

as the Iron Demon and stole his healing ooze.

Now in the present, Shredder and Krang meet again.

The main writing is done by Kevin and Bobby as

well with Tom Waltz. The story is done by Tom.

The art is done by Corey Smith with colors by

Rhonda Pattinson. This is the first time Corey's

been on the book, right? I have never heard that

name before. It doesn't sound familiar to me,

but the art really does not jump out at me as

weird or different. Right. No, I'm not saying

that. I'm just saying this is a name that I have

not seen or heard before. we open this up and

it's Shredder and Krang on the boat and This

is by far some of the best writing to this point

This is pretty much an all villains issue. This

has no turtles in it. No turtles whatsoever I

absolutely love it because we are somewhere in

the middle of the Atlantic Ocean And it's really

interesting seeing these six men. You get Crang

and Shredder, and then each of them have two

soldiers behind them. Love the art. I would say

this panel at the bottom left where Crang says,

Some more than others, even when 300 years separates

us from our last meeting, a term I use loosely,

by the way. This version of Krang looks more

animated series style than he has before. I like

it. I think it's pretty cool. This issue, I think,

is what a lot of us have been waiting for. Personally,

I'm not the biggest fan of the old animated series.

The first five issues are spectacularly animated

and look great. Of course, the voice actors,

the whole cast is great, but the stories were

just, as the seasons went on, too silly for me

to really kind of get into. Loved it as a kid,

can't come back to it as an adult. But we've

always, for this whole series, been waiting for

Shredder and Krang to team up. And this is them

coming together. What the IDW verse did, different

than other things, is they've met before, and

it was not on good terms. They set this up to

be a very tense meeting. And indeed, as the dialogue

goes through here, it's very, very tense. Krang's

kind of... He already knows what the outcome

of this meeting is going to be, but he's still,

for entertainment's sake, asking Shredder to...

to plead his case. Exactly. And this doesn't

go as we would often think it would. Because,

I mean, yes, Krang knows the ultimate outcome

of this meeting. Already does, yeah. I mean,

you know, he already knows. And it just, you

know, the panel, I think it's on... Oh, man,

because I'm going... I think it's on the next

page here, the panel where he says, where Shredder

says, not something I have, General, but the

protection of something that currently belongs

to you. And what might that be? Burnout Island

and Crane just laughs. He would actually call

a meeting on my ship, take up my valuable time

just to talk about my property. There's Gaul

and then there's damned Gaul. I love the interactions

between these two. I really, really do. And for

me, at this point in the story, they're from

two very different worlds. I mean, Shredder came

from 15th century Japan and is still kind of

living that lifestyle in contemporary New York.

Krang comes from the sci -fi thing where he's

worked his way up through this alien army and

he's had a war with... with the neutrinos and

he's engineering this ooze to save his species

and so when they come together like this you

really see the clash of like we don't know how

did they work in the animated series how did

they ever get along fit together work together

um and i think this meeting here is much more

indicative of how that how those two personalities

would actually ever meet like you know in in

this so i'm i was eating this up Oh, absolutely.

I mean, because sometimes, not all the time,

but sometimes because I get my comics digitally

through Comixology .com, sometimes they have

the issues released at midnight Eastern Standard

Time. So it's like, you know, like sometime around

one or two a .m., I'll be, you know, getting

ready to go to bed and I'll check it and be like,

oh, hey, the new issue. I remember. When this,

when this got released, I'm like, you know, I,

I, I took a picture of the, of the cover, put

it on Facebook and I'm like, just read it, mini

review, no spoilers. It was awesome. And then

I tagged you and I'm like, Oh God. Like I could

not stop smiling this entire time. Uh, it's so

good. Um, so we then go to Alopex. And she meets

up with Kitsune, which is... Okami. I mean, oh

yeah, Kitsune. No, it's Kitsune. Okami was the

video game where you're a fox, and it was all

cell shaded. When I look at her fox form, it

just reminds me of that. So they meet up, and,

you know... They have an interesting conversation

About about watching and acting and you know

kitsune calls alopex home And we're not sure

why but they've had this interesting relationship

where even though kitsune is working for the

shredder and working to promote the shredder

she's cut she inspired alopex to freak out on

him when he took her to her home in alopex and

showed her killer shredder killed her family

and her wiped out her where she was from and

that an interaction with kitsune and her is why

she flipped out on the shredder at that point

and ran away ultimately but now she wants her

back uh kitsune is playing a game here to her

own ends and i don't even think at this point

now that her ends match What the shredder wants

something is going on there. Yeah, I Love the

panels here where You know, she says I need you

at home and she says home. Yes child You will

not remember this talk only that you must return

to me and the right hand played a similar game

Is that you're not gonna remember this? Yeah,

but oh God I Bobby Tom Kevin if any of you guys

are listening to this Please tell us that the

Rat King and Kitsune are going to be in an issue

together, because that would just be... I don't

know. That would probably break my brain to see

them together in an issue. That would be awesome.

I'm sure we will at some point. They're going

to have a throwdown. So, Alopex doesn't remember

it. She says, huh, as Bugs Bunny hops away. You

know and we get we go back to Kitsune We see

her we then go back to the ship and Surprise

surprise. It's an ambush and the giant fight

starts We see the revelations of Karai taking

the mutagen. Oh, this is this is the flashback

They're still discussing it. You need me to protect

you. Crank says, protect me from what? You're

the one who broke in here, stole my ooze, killed

half my ootroms, and stole all this information

and made your own mutants. Their negotiations

begin to degrade at this point. Now pay close

attention. Krang says, there will be no alliance,

no partnership, no forgiveness. They're never

getting back together at this point. For past

sins, there will only be new Ultramanon, and

I will own its throne. As for you and your little

human uprising, you can forget that too, Shredder,

because there will be no humans either. I plan

to kill them all. Starting with him, because...

I didn't know that panel was coming. That's exquisitely

illustrated, too. It's very well. Very well done.

Now, to be fair, I was a major spoiler. No, hey,

this issue is, you know, a month or so old. So,

you know, to be fair, I don't it wasn't Kiraya

that killed the eutrons. It was Baxter that was

going to. She she sabotaged one of the units

to get the news right and that's right I did

kill a few or bit drained a few. I don't but

something Either way that wasn't good for crane.

Yeah, I love shredder you actually you you actually

believe you can rule the world now who deals

in call And I love how the backgrounds like like

in those two panels where where it shredders

uh you know where he's talking about dealing

in gall and the next one where he says uh you

must realize this planet will never accept you

an alien as its leader i love how simple this

is it's shredder on a blue sky background because

it's he's sitting down and same thing with the

next one is the next panel on that page is you

know krang talking back to him it's so Simple

there's not a lot going on the main focus is

the discussion of what they are talking about

not necessarily Because this isn't an action

scene yet but shredder gets up and You know we

You know crank says now pay close attention there

will be oh well you yeah, yeah, you already said

this and I plan to kill them all, starting with

you. And he punches Shredder in the chest. Is

he dead? Is that it? Krang takes the helmet off,

says, you know, I think I'm going to make my

new armor out of this dude's body. And as he

takes the helmet off, realizes there's a bomb.

There's been ninja trickery. And then and that's

when all heck breaks loose, because what's the

line from the movie? Negotiations turned hostile.

Aggressive negotiations. What's the? I can't

remember what movies that that's from. Oh, gosh,

it's going to bother me. I don't remember. What

I don't understand about this is how in the hell

did shredder do this? Because we've seen him.

I mean, even in the panel where he or Karang

basically puts his fist through his chest. We

see his face. We see the mask. We see even on

the panel before the, you know, the panel before

that where he says, you know, I plan to kill

them all. We see, you know, the shredder's face.

We see his eyes. It's like, how did shredder

do this? Well, he was, he was never, he was never

in that armor. He was one of the bodyguards.

So this was just some schmo some schmo. Yep in

the helmet there There's a microphone or a speaker

off to the side and so okay Orokosaki was talking

it but it was coming out of that speaker not

The dude's mouth right right right, okay? So

we get this giant fight the ship is gonna go

down You know crank says attack them kill them

all And, you know, Saki comes out fighting. And

then Koya and... Shark Boy show up. Bludgeon,

yeah. Bludgeon. Missed an opportunity to call

that Armagon. Yeah. From the Archie series. Yeah,

I don't know why they're calling the shark Bludgeon.

considering where I know that name from is transformers

but he looks awesome he looks really really cool

he's wearing his shirt tooth necklace you know

so you know Craig calls for tragging grant granita

or a granitor and an all -out battle You laughing

at just the them fighting Come then general it

appears we have business yet. You're dead Saki.

Yes Well, but not be the first time clang as

they go at each other Yep That panel is so awesome

And all I can think of is the very first episode

when Raph fights the foot soldiers clang did

you say clang? Dude's nuts. They're robots robots.

Let's rock So we have a huge fight between shredder

and crank and their their their armies here He

says then you have the audacity to attack me

on my own ship never again and crank basically

pulls an itchy Because this shot here with all

the bullets coming out reminds me of the Simpsons

movie when itchy Accidentally launches like a

million missiles to the moon and they all go

in scratchy's mouth and they can blow up That's

what it kind of reminds me of here a little bit

You know so they and this is interesting though

because you have Shredder who is using you know

Swords and other ninja based weapons and crying

is using guns. I mean this is This is the third

movie all over again You know meanwhile the shark

and the bird are attacking the men and We we

find out that the ship is sinking And you know

even though shredder does delve a kind of a Deciphering

blow to Krang's left leg You know koi is like

sorry master. This is a This is a lost cause

You know this battle is through And the ship

and I love this Again, this reminds me so much

of Star Trek and Star Wars and all that stuff.

Sir, sir, we've got to go. The ship is history.

Burnout command, this is Grenadier. Engage emergency

teleportation. Over. For the entire ship? No

burnout for three. Only three. And as he's teleporting,

shredder, damn you. Well, those two are never

going to team up. Nope. Nope. And it's going

to be even more evident in the next issue. Even

though it doesn't focus on them specifically,

it focuses on, you know, how the turtles need

to handle stuff. And, you know, so Koya and Bludgeon

are making their escape a shredder. uh and you

know shredder says uh uh bludgeon says does this

mean we're at war with general crying now master

uh yes bludgeon in truth we always were uh and

then to be continued um overall for someone i

have just first seen in in uh... cori smith's

art group i really dig it i'd dig the art love

the story i mean this is what you know as you

said this is what we've been building to for

the last thirty success units to see it i don't

think anybody for saw this i don't think anybody

for saw this coming as far as readers go because

we all assume that they're going to team up because

they need to come you know together for the common

enemy, which is the turtles and Hob and all that

stuff. They don't. They can't. This is going

to be a battle on all fronts. I mean, nobody

has allies. The turtles are alone, Shredder's

alone. Nobody's going to be able to gang up on

anybody. Yeah, and it kind of goes back to that

message. that Honeycutt sent out in one of the

one -shots, or I think it was in Ultron Empire,

about, you know, contacting multiple people to

face the... That's never... It's never gonna

happen. You know, honestly, I think Shredder

has a bigger chance of getting together with

the Turtles to fight Krang than Krang and Shredder

have to fight the Turtles. At this point. True.

Because Shredder has as much to lose from him

as the Turtles do, you know, all of Earth. if

crane takes that over that's oh that's done absolutely

that is done so final thoughts on issue 37 sir

I think that was a way worthwhile payoff for

what I had been expecting since issue one absolutely

All right, we are going to take a quick break

come back with issue 38 after this guess I'll

be moving on Oh, hold on dude. Where are you

gonna? Go? I don't know. Maybe I'll go back to

the sewers epic. We can be neighbors, huh? Tubulosa

dude our first sewer neighbor. Hey, you could

borrow a cup of sugar from us anytime You have

chosen a very nice layer, Gecko. Thanks, Master

Splinter. And thank you for the furniture. And

it turns out that Gecko and I have been having

the same dream for years. You've been dreaming

about each other? How romantic. I hated doing

bad stuff because deep down, it wasn't me. I

guess that's why I kept saving your shelf. Bodacious,

dude. What have you learned from all this, my

pupils? That we were wrong to make fun of Michelangelo's

dream. Precisely. Hey, thanks to you guys, I'm

through with crime forever. And if you ever need

me, just yell. You dudes can finish arranging

the furniture. Me and Gecko are going to do some

righteous sewer skateboarding. All right! Cowabunga!

All right, ladies and gentlemen, Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles issue number 38. The main cover

is Old Hob. with a canister of mutagen, and it

is glowing. Now I know in the comics it was called

T .C .R .I., but I come from Turtles 2, and I

really wish this had said something on it like

T .G .R .I. or something. You know, I think it

would be really cool if the canister had said

something on this cover, but other than that,

I love the first cover. Yeah, you know, that

kind of makes me realize the ooze is all crangs

in this, and there's not the corporation in the

original comic it was techno cosmic research

industries because they were the aliens were

on earth doing research trying to help the human

race kind of from the inside and do research

for their own people and recon but when they

made it for the for the the the second movie

with when they got rid of the space connection

to the ooze and people weren't ootroms it was

techno global research industries so tgri but

yeah it wouldn't have any initials on it because

it's Krang's secret stuff now I'd kind of like

yeah I miss initials on my canister it should

just say mine now or something the the cover

B which is done by Eastman is nobody basically

facing all these these criminals it's interesting

I like it It's pretty cool. It's probably one

of the only, and no offense to Mr. Eastman, but

I'm not generally a fan of his covers. It really

depends on what it is. But I do really like the

Nobody cover here. So this one, you know, obviously

Kevin, Bobby, and Tom on the writing. And Santalucco

is back on the art with Rhonda on colors and

Sean Lee is on the letters The story so far the

turtles have returned to NYC, but they struggle

to determine with Who the bigger threat is shredder

or crank meanwhile old hub has convinced Ex stock

gen scientist Lindsey Baker to help him create

more mutants Wouldn't so much say he convinced

her it's more like he kidnapped her and told

her you better do this or else So this one opens

up with the turtles going to church. I'm sorry

going under the church I Still love this I really

really dig this new layer I wish that it was

kind of more in the line of the new layer from

the second movie Regardless of what anybody says

about that second movie that layer the subway

layer was awesome my favorite Simply awesome

So we we get we get the turtles and splinter

going back down talking about you know the Talking

about their training session that they had Which

is interesting and You know Mikey brings up the

fact of when splinter basically scared the hell

out of all of them back in issue 21 So I really

dig that And you know splinter says well all

joking aside my son it was only meant to prepare

you for any Surprises we might face in the future.

Gah! Hey, guys. It's Slash. I love Raph, because

I can so hear Sean Astin saying this. Damn it,

Slash, what the hell? What are you doing sitting

in the dark? I don't think, yeah, I... At this

point for me, um... Really only with the exception

of Leo because Leo is kind of It's kind of questionable

who I hear what voice actor I hear in my head

for Leo because he's been through so much But

for Mikey Donnie and Leo and Mikey Donnie and

Raph it's pretty much Rob Paulson is Donnie Sean

is Raph and Sipes as Mikey At least those are

the ones that I hear in my head It depends on

what Mikey is saying as to whether I hear the

movie voice or The new animated series voice

the new animated series Mikey to me is adorably

cute and you just kind of want to hug him and

and and but he's sometimes he's a little more

heartfelt in this than that and So that's you

when he's being sentimental is when I usually

hear movie Mikey When he's being goofy is when

I hear new animated series. Yeah. And then Donnie's

like, meditating, or Leo's like, meditating,

since when do you, wait a second, how the heck

did you get in here without setting off my alarm

system? Oh, you did. He disabled the alarm system.

He's like, it'll be fine once I leave. And you

can tell this next scene. When slash is like

Mikey good to see you Yeah, good to see you,

too, but why are you here, dude? You can tell

Mikey's not exactly comfortable. It's really

hard to make Michelangelo uncomfortable I kind

of feel bad for slash because it's a new it's

a new beginning for him being both smart and

being a good guy and Seeing how uneasy the turtles

are and kind of angry. I don't know. It's not

the approach that I would have had reacting to

the situation. I'd have been like, whoa, dude,

that scared the crap out of me. I'm sorry, but,

you know, hey, all right. And maybe, you know,

yes, he's invading their home and they're not

cool with that. But at the same time, try not

to make this new guy who's potentially psychologically

fragile, you know, don't upset him. Don't. insult

him he's still can kill you really see I think

the thing with this is is that the only one that's

really gonna twist slash to their own ends is

Hob I mean Hob will twist anybody to to meet

what he wants do you think Hob is capable of

twisting slash now that he's a smart guy only

time will tell on that one I don't Don't think

so. I think obviously before he was smart. I

mean, yeah, you know Hob was like, you know Come

here little turtle ball. Let me scratch at you.

That's pretty much what he was like I don't know

about smart slash. I'm not sure I'm Cautiously

optimistic that Hob won't I mean I I will say

this about Hob even though he is a bad guy He

is a villain. He does have fierce loyalty to

slash So that's interesting. So he is there to

invite them to invite Master Splinter, as, you

know, Raph so succinctly puts it, to go see Hob,

and this is about a promise that Splinter had

made Hob. And Donnie's like, what promise? Later,

my son and Donnie. After I got to say listeners,

after we did the Turtles in Time recording and

seeing that fourth issue, I've never seen Donatello

in such a different light after seeing old Donnie.

That really affected him. That really is. I think

now that Paul Allor told that story, I think

now Waltz and Eastman and Kernow are going to.

build on that and really show how doubtful Donnie

is and you know he even points out you know we'll

get to this here in a little bit but he even

points out about the whole superhero thing and

we're not crime fighters and you know everything

else which is interesting that they're not just

making Donnie just hey this is just you know

the genius character so You know Mikey's gonna

see slash out Leo's like Mikey we need to have

a family meeting I know dude and You know so

as Mikey sees slash out he asked him about side

effects or nothing and and slash says nothing

he's aware of and You know and slash is really

creepy as he Basically dives away, that's That's

a creepy looking image of his I think his irises

you're too small there to Usually dilated. I

think that's what they are dilated pupils like

that mean something And I'm not sure if we're

supposed to infer anything from that. So because

of the confusion it reads as creepy Like did

is he offended at what Mikey said by saying I'm

glad I'm on the side of the heroes. I hope you're

I don't know if these are purple dragons or who

these guys are. If they're just standard criminals

or what's going on here as far as who the hell

she's kicking ass on. But she's basically thwomping

them all. And she has some nice banter back and

forth with with Harold and and Then all of a

sudden one of the guys comes out with a gun Harold's

like behind you and I love the little the little

Small panel where he says you're dead You're

so dead and it's a reflection of him in your

helmet. Oh good. So good So good So it's interesting

to see her kicking ass and I assume when she

says She says I'm good, but who the hell was

that did the cameras catch anything the next

panel? I assume that's Hello, well, it's it's

it's couldn't it wouldn't be Kitsune. No, that's

That's what happened. There was she was Nobody

was caught unaware and alopex is the one who

knocks the gun away knocks the guy out and then

is gone and That's why she's saying Okay, I think

yeah, you're right. Yeah, that's what happens

because Yeah, yeah, we see the panel with the

gun in her helmet reflection and then we see

this swoosh even though she is turned Nobody

is turned like she's gonna elbow him it's the

swoosh in between her and him that actually knocks

the thing yeah you're right so alopex basically

saved her ass wow um so we get to the family

meeting and donnie is more concerned about the

greater good than the shredder than the vendetta

because i mean technically you know The whole

Splinter Shredder thing is a multi -generational

vendetta between the two of them. They've always

hated each other because, obviously, of actions

that Shredder took back then, but I really do

think Donnie's right. I mean, Shredder is a common

criminal in the grand scheme of things when Krang

wants to terraform the entire Earth into Dimension

X. The bigger picture is more important at this

point, and Donnie just, even Donnie, he basically

facepalms it. I can't believe they worked in

a facepalm. That's so awesome. And he basically

says, oh, I don't want to talk about it anymore.

But fine, whatever you guys go with, Hub and...

you know, get busy making monsters, and I've

got to stop one. Again, I know you say, you know,

that Donnie is just a typical genius character.

I haven't necessarily tried to talk you out of

that opinion, but I mean, they're showing...

Well, they're showing me out of that opinion,

I think, starting with that issue. Yeah, they're

showing a hell of a lot of character development

for Donnie. And it's about time. I think this

is the first time we've really ever got it. Mm

-hmm. I just hope the numbers for this book or

this title are as good to keep it going, because

if this ends before that magical number of 73,

that would really suck, first of all. Mm -hmm.

But second of all, I just hope that the numbers

are so good for this that we continue to get

character -building stories. You know, and...

We get the other three turtles You know and then

this is where Mikey points out about you know

Then he's just saying we're gonna be crime fighters

But I got to believe we're good guys at least

and shouldn't the good guys be more worried about

saving the whole world instead of just themselves

Again, Mikey is showing real depth which is so

nice refreshing absolutely Any thoughts on the

family meeting? We're watching them divide. We're

watching them come apart. Well, there's something

that happened in the animated series. I haven't

seen it. I hear that the end of Season 2 is incredible.

That they paid homage to my favorite issue from

the Mirage run. So I need to go track that down

and see the end of Season 2 where the turtles

are... totally whomped and then season three

starts and they're they're in Northampton or

what is an approximation of the Northampton run

where the turtles are rebuilding and re and healing

again I think very soon in this book we're gonna

come to a point where there's a break and we're

gonna have to have them heal again and come together

as a family because that that is the ultimate

theme of the book, and we're watching the house

divided here. Mikey and Don are kind of, I think,

going to go off on their own and stop the technodrome,

and Leo and Raph are going to stay with Shredder.

I will tell you that you can probably go to nick

for free. for season two finale and season three's

first, at least the first episode, we're two

episodes so far into season three and that first

episode of season three, oh my god, so many homages.

So many and it is so awesome. So awesome. So

we get to April coming back to the second time

round shop. and you know mom and dad are still

there with Casey you know she hugs dad and everything

else and she says daddy I'm so happy to see you

better you don't even know and I'm excited to

catch up but I need to talk to my boyfriend for

a sec okay sure sweetie and whack ow April O

'Neil what in the world This moment right here

is what it seemed that kind of made my skin crawl

as Being being a teacher in the inner city With

inner city kids and kind of growing up in a lower

income kind of area like I did domestic violence

really kind of hits home more than more than

it does with most people and When I look at that

panel and April's angry eyes the mom freaking

out going, what is my daughter doing? And then

Casey taken that when he's already got a black

eye from some other fight involving his dad.

I look at this and see that cycle of violence

starting in case he's at the center of it. He's

in an abusive relationship with his father, something

no human being should ever have to put up with.

And then now his relationship with April just

turned physical. I mean, it's not, you know,

that's not. She's not beating him senseless.

She's not leaving marks, but that's how it starts.

And this is a side of April that I'm very concerned

about. I can't tell if they drew that panel and

wrote this part of the story without being aware

of what that might mean or if they're signaling

something that we're gonna see Casey go through,

in which case it breaks my heart. to see Casey

in that type of relationship. It's not what I

want them to do with April. I don't want them

to turn her into a casual abuser of her boyfriend.

Even though the roles are essentially reversed

conventionally, we see men beating women. This

happens, the reverse happens, and it just rings

too serious to be done with such cavalier disregard.

Part of me wants them to turn that into something

part of me wants to Talk to them and then like

they apologize for the giant misunderstanding

if that's not what they intended to do So that's

what that's what I want to write the letter about

Yeah, I think this is um Yeah, you're right I

completely agree with you about the whole you

know domestic violence thing, but I think this

is basically Maybe she could have just smacked

him in the back of the head. Yeah. Yeah. Have

you ever seen NCIS with Mark Harmon and on CBS?

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And he walks by and does what

walks by and smacks the nose up against it. Yeah.

I think that's what they're going for here. I

think you're right. Because this is after he

checked out and didn't call, didn't answer, didn't

come back. So she's... And that's what I think.

And I agree with you, I think that's what they

were trying to do. And they just maybe did it

a little insensitively. Right, the way that it's

shown in this panel, in this image, is that it

is her fist connecting with his shoulder. And

if they had done it any other way, it might have

been less insensitive, but because she... I don't

know if they could have... Because the whole

point here is she eventually kneels down to him

and says, you know, hey, you know, it means if

you don't change what you're doing, I could lose

you forever. And I couldn't take that Casey Jones.

It means I have your back too, if you'll just

let me. And he says, I know. I know you do April

really I do you know so they have this really

touching moment I think if it was paneled a little

bit better with her coming down to and I understand

this is a very serious moments very serious thing

in their relationship and you know you know her

telling him hey look I'm here to help but you

have to let me help you know I can't help you

if you don't want my help I think if she had

sat on the couch and just Talked to him and then

you know smacked him upside the head at some

point like you know reaching behind the back

it wouldn't have come across as as as you know

Emotionally charged as this is yeah, I mean in

that panel and in the top of the next page in

that panel She's bigger than him and he's shrinking

away She's bigger than him in the panel to the

right of the strike And it's not until later

that she shrinks down and then after she shrinks

down I mean, Casey's face just makes me wanna

take him away from that situation and say, all

right, dude, we gotta find a different relationship.

But I don't think that's what they intended and

that's kind of what I'm... hurting in my head

about, I guess, with this part. Yeah. And then

you have, you know, the last panel before we

change over to the finale here, that last bottom

part of the panel, you have April's mom and dad,

you know, April's mom sitting on the couch, her

dad kneeling, not on both knees. He's more so,

oh God. April's dad is spider -man he's doing

what looks like we can't see his other leg ladies

and gentlemen in the panel But he looks like

he's doing like that spider -man crouch thing

And April and Casey are just kind of hugging

I Thought it was good. I mean from the onset

of this series Casey has had a Probably the most

rickety wooden Emotional roller coaster that

he has ever had in any incarnation of the character.

He's had his ups He's had his downs and he's

at the point now where he does need her help

But he has I've already said he needs to allow

her to help and this is her basically I don't

want to say this but I'm gonna say it this way.

Anyway, this is basically her smacking some sense

into him and saying look I'm here You know, I

can see how you know The the punch to the shoulder

would be a little insensitive to some people.

I really can And I do like her mom's reaction,

but I also like how the situation kind of ends

Because at this point we've brought these people

back around even though April's mom and dad just

met Casey these four people are also family,

just as the Turtles and Splinter are a family,

just as Shredder and Karai are a family. So again,

it's bringing it all around. And April says,

it's just another kind of fight, Casey, one you

don't have to fight alone because we're all in

this together. And then we get to Old Hob, Rafts,

Master Splinter, and Mikey. along with Lindsay

and Slash. And, you know, Old Hob is like, um,

about damn time Slash said you had some little

family squabble to settle. Where's the rest of

your drama club? None of your business, Hairball.

Just show us what you dragged us over here for.

Look around, you don't see, turtle? I don't see

anything stinking fleabag wasted our time. What

is the meaning of this old hob? The meaning,

rat, I'll tell ya. We mutants ain't been around

all that long, not compared to how long the humans

have, but stinking up the world, but that ain't

really the whole story, is it? Because before

we were mutants, we were animals, and the animals

have been living on this earth since the beginning

of time. way before the human pollution started

screwing things up for everyone so starting today

we're taking it back and he's introducing them

to his mutant army and he's like trickery oh

it's all a trick all right boys and we get revealed

turtles and rats say hello to Herman the hermit

crab serves and Mondo Gecko. What's up? Okay,

Herman the hermit crab, I believe is an IDW introduction.

Yeah, I can't pull him from ever in my head.

I even looked him up before we did the recording.

Anything I've found says that he is an IDW creation,

which is fine. I have no problem with that. No,

because you've got some great characters. We

get some great characters, and plus there are

plenty of other, you know, existing mutants that

they can bring in later. And just seeing Mondo,

it's like, this is so awesome. And I've always

related to him more as a toy than any character

from the show, and I think he's only existed...

Did he exist in the 2003? I do not remember if

he did. I know that he is in Season 5 of the

original series. Because Michelangelo has this

weird dream about how he was also in the sewer

grate that day that they felt now. That's right

But you know Splinter goes on to say fascinating

sir. Thank you, sir, and we can clearly tell

that Herman is I Don't want to say he's a private

pile, but he's He very much reminds me of Leonard

Lawrence from Full Metal Jacket. Oh, it's been

too long since I've seen it. It was Vincent D

'Onofrio as Leonard Lawrence, who is the washout

of the unit. You know, so Mikey's like, oh, dude,

sweet board, custom job, bro, pretty sick, huh?

And then Lindsay goes on to talk some some experimental

stuff and And this is kind of where I think that

the thing with hob and slash is gonna come into

play and Cuz Hob says you're wasting your time

with all that egghead talk Lindsay the smart

one ain't here So nobody knows what the hell

you're blabbering about Yeah, you know Except

slash, you know So he kind of plays it off, but

that's the thing that I think Hob is gonna have

to look That's the thing Hob's gonna have to

watch out for is when he's talking about intelligent

stuff Around slash because if he sits there and

constantly put slash down Regardless of how loyal

they are to each other It's not gonna be a good

thing for for hobby slash goes goes nuts And

Raph says, uh, great, a walk and talk and trash

can crab and a skateboard and stoner lizard.

What do you, you run out of pigeons, Hob? Uh,

and Leo shows up and Herman's like, uh, oh. He's

like, wait a minute, I'm gonna have to find Tango

inside the wire, Mondo. I love how these guys

talk to each other. And Mondo looks so bizarro

on his skateboard. It's so awesome. And that

skate, oh my god, dude, that skateboard is rocket

powered. I didn't notice that when he showed

it to Mikey earlier. No, that's a gun. Is it

really? It's a gun? Yeah, because he cocks it

when he points at Leo. So Mondo, oh yeah, you're

right. Damn, I thought it was a rocket powered

skateboard, shit. So Mondo and Herman are like,

yeah man, don't make us get gnarly on you is

what Mondo says. You know Hobbes like you were

saying turtle and Leo's just like what guys what

the hell Hobbes like it's all right. He's one

of us and they all back down This is really some

interesting stuff. I'm gonna be interested to

see how they Introduce other mutants whether

they're new to IDW universe to new like they

have their own creations or how they bring in

others like Muck man and that you know that kind

of thing So you know we get to the final panel

kind of thing before it sets up the end and raps

like where is that bird rain anyways Pete I Sent

him to retrieve more specimens So I wonder how

many mutants hob is going to need to do what

he needs to do to get done. Like, I don't know

what his goals are. Does he want to wipe out

all of humanity? Or just carve out a small niche

for him and his mutant friends? But when this

panel comes up and Pigeon Pete is talking, I

didn't know who he was talking to yet. I didn't

put, you know, the obvious things together. Well,

I put... I put it... as soon as we get to the

bottom part of the panel where they say did you

just say turtle i knew immediately i knew uh

no kidding oh yeah a great big one yeah i don't

know what his voice is from the animated series

but i hear a voice i don't yeah i don't remember

i hear the i hear the scarecrow from wizard of

oz yeah i uh So he says so you guys want to join?

Yeah, what the heck? Where do we sign up and

it's bebop and rocksteady This is not good This

is not good at all This is Pigeon Pete has just

opened a can of worms that he cannot get out

of Well, he'll be fine. I think it's everybody

else who's gonna be That's what I'm saying is

like he just opened a can of worms for ha and

everybody else that it's like oh This is the

problem when you send the dumb one out to do

like they should have sent slash to do the recruit

But Issue 38 I absolutely love it. I thought

it was great all around you've got the turtles

doing their thing you've got shredder uh well

we didn't really see a lot of shredder in this

issue because we had a whole lot of them in the

other issue you've got the turtles and hob and

all that stuff you've got it's just so good the

art is fantastic the writing is so damn good

i love how they are constantly building on donnie

and mikey's characters i mean because leo and

raf We've had City Fall essentially was Leo's

story. I mean, yeah, really is Leo's story And

we have You know, we we haven't had a whole lot

of character building on RAF except a few times

when Splinter has talked to him about his anger

issues Because there was that whole thing way

back when when Splinter said, you know I used

to be just like you my son angry all the time

But I love how they are consistently giving Donnie

and Mikey more character development as this

goes on. Absolutely awesome. Yeah, I'd like even

more character development on Leo eventually

because I think he usually gets overlooked as

the Boy Scout leader and doesn't have any interesting

arcs. They gave him, I guess they gave him one

of the... 12 animated series because he's starting

out as the unsure leader. Like, why did you pick

me, Leo? Or why did you pick me, Master? Because

you're the only one who didn't ask. So, that's

because you're the boring one, Leonardo. That's

why I picked you. Absolutely. Any other final

thoughts on issue 38? It's building. It's building

and it's going to get huge in a couple of months

here, I think. Yep, it really really is So we

are gonna take a quick break you're gonna hear

and 38. I'm sorry. I'm distracted because Over

the break we were looking at solicits and I learned

that an old mirage mini story arc called souls

winter Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles souls winter

is getting released in hardcover in November

All of you need to go buy that when that comes

out It's an incredible alternate reality story

concerning the turtles. Not at all traditional

turtles that we know, but beautifully illustrated

black and white on the interior. It's a standalone

thing, you gotta go read that. But 37 and 38,

two issues that I think are building towards

something gigantic. I think it will be the biggest

event that we've had in the Turtles series. I

wonder, I don't know how soon everything's gonna

blow up or how much of this teasing we're going

to get, how many more issues of it. But I'm liking

where it's headed, both very good issues. absolutely

same here absolutely love them both the story

is flowing so well they they just cannot do anything

wrong with this ongoing whatsoever now I'm not

sure if we're going to cover what's coming up

for TMNT in the IDW universe because we're going

to get a TMNT IDW Ghostbusters crossover. It's

a four -issue miniseries. It is written by Eric

Burnham and Tom Walz. The art is done by Dan

Schoening. He does a good... that guy, that artist

is incredible. He's been on the Ghostbusters

since the very beginning, minus an issue or two

in there. Beautiful characterizations of Bill

Murray and the rest of the Ghostbusters. I think

they're... brilliant, forgot the word for it,

caricatures of those characters. The series has

been great, the ongoing Ghostbusters series,

but I'm not convinced of this crossover's quality.

Generally, these crossovers don't necessarily

tie in and they're kind of silly. The X -Files

one was meh, lone gunmen doing their thing, and

they should, the turtles showed up, and yes,

Scully and Mulder had the turtles on the phone.

So I don't you know, it's like whatever guys.

Okay. I'm glad that they can cry Oh, I want the

Ninja Turtles Transformers crossover. They own

the license. Let's do it, right? You know that

the the turtle van can turn into Optimus Prime.

It'll be great No, it won't. No, never happen.

Oh, that's kind of what I'm thinking with the

Ghostbusters, you know I'll read the first issue

and and it's it it's by a bunch of people that

I like It's gonna be done with love. We're gonna

get to see how these characters would interact,

but it's not gonna mean anything Yeah, I'm I'm

not so sure and this actually the first issue

of this comes out later this month in the 22nd

of October So there is that? But we are gonna

be talking about right now. Well just to get

the solicitation out of the way for Trent Turtles

Ghostbusters number one When a new invention

goes haywire the turtles are sent to a whole

new type of New York City One with a whole lot

more ghosts and Ghostbusters the two teams will

have to learn to get along quickly Because a

new foe from the turtles past has followed them

and aims to conquer NYC okay, now I know solicits

are supposed to get us excited and whatever else

but I'm probably gonna get this first issue just

to see who this foe is. But we are also here

to talk about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles issue

number 39, which actually comes out the day that

you're hearing this. Solicitation is done, Waltz,

Eastman, Santalucco on art, Santalucco and Eastman

on colors. Says the ranks of hubs gang are growing

and two other mutants want in bebop and rocksteady

number 40, it's Walt and Eastman on writing,

it's Santalucco on art, uh, also Santalucco and

Eastman on colors. Mutants, new and old, make

for a combustible mix. The turtles are stuck

in the middle of an unfolding brawl that could

affect mutant kind forever. Will Hob's army be

destroyed before it ever begins? Alopex? Nobody?

Pigeon Pete? Who will be the victor? Dun dun.

Pretty damn interesting, because this is going

to be something that you wanted. You said this

in air quotes, ladies and gentlemen, even though

cover is amazing. I've got tears in my eyes.

When I was growing up from like... 10 11 to like

15 I would draw the technodrome endlessly it

was inspired by the video game and and that battle

where you're fighting it kind of on the horizontal

plane and I would draw those claws shooting lightning

and I would draw that eyeball and I have like

just this kind of weird sentimental attachment

to what the technodrome is and seeing this eye

now it is And and readers here you go. It's just

a beautiful modernization of what that is. I

was as Ever since I think the first issue we

got to see parts of the technodrome getting put

together and it was just that spheroid And I'm

thinking man that eyeball up top can look so

cartoony They've done a really good job and right

now I am resisting the urge of just knocking

the microphone over leaving Mike by himself And

going upstairs and starting to draw the thing

again like I did when I was a kid I will absolutely

have this thing drawn before before 1030 tonight

absolutely yeah that's not allowed you're not

just no you're not just cutting and running um

but no it looks like see i i read the solicits

every month but sometimes i don't pay attention

to the covers because sometimes the covers are

the retail incentive, and I don't always get

the retail incentive. Well, now that I do digital,

I don't get the retail incentive at all, but

still. You know, so we've got that. That doesn't

look like Santolucco on the cover. Eastman Walt

Smith, it's a new guy. That's Corey Smith, yeah.

That's Corey Smith the guy that we were talking

about today But yeah, I mean, oh my god the end

of the year for Turtles is just going to be completely

epic I and not Wait for the end of the year for

issues 39 to 41 It's going to be awesome. And

even though I know you're not that optimistic

about Turtles and Ghostbusters crossing over

I kind of Am because I want to see who that villain

from their past is going to be it's it's probably

well It's got to be somebody who's bent on world

domination. So it's gonna be Kranger shredder

Let's hope not I mean and I can't think of anybody

any ghosts That would be appropriate. I mean,

you know, like it would fit both So my guess

is gonna be I'm gonna say Krang cuz he's an alien

who could be interpreted as a ghost But I don't

know You know, um, it could be a Roko Nagi Wait,

you're right. He'd be dead. No one is no one
