About this Episode

TFG1Mike and JT from Saskatoon explore two pivotal Iron Man trades: Armor Wars by David Michelinie and Bob Layton, a sprawling corporate espionage story that dismantles Tony Stark's armor vault, and Extremis by Warren Ellis, a cutting-edge biotech thriller featuring the dangerous super-soldier serum and the emergence of a powered-up antagonist. The hosts discuss how these stories shaped Iron Man's legacy across comics, cartoons, and film adaptations.

Uh, Sage Orbis, is it that time? The house party

protocol, sir? Correct. You've jumped inside.

The Marvelous March spectacular here on the pullback.

This annual spotlight on Marvel Comics characters

will be held every March for 2014, TFT1 Mike,

JT from Saskatoon, Comic Revol Dan, and the positively

nerdy Ryan Porter. Tackle a tonal of eight trade

paperbacks featuring Captain America, Hulk, Spider

-Man, Iron Man, and Wolverine, bub. So get these

web shooters ready to armor up and pop the claws,

bub. Cause inside the pullbag, we're hulking

out for America! Fuck yeah! It's all inside the

pullbag here on the Geekcast Radio Network. And

now on with the show. Is it better to be feared

or respected? And I say, is it too much to ask

for both? With that in mind, I humbly present

the crown jewel of Stark Industries Freedom Line.

It's the first missile system to incorporate

our proprietary repulsor technology. They say

the best weapon is when you never have to fire.

I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon

you only have to fire. once. That's how dad did

it, that's how America does it, and it's worked

out pretty well so far. Hello and welcome to

the Pull Bags Marvelous March. We are at episode

63 and this one is all about the man in the iron

suit. That's right. I am your host, TF2, Mike,

and joining me is JT from Saskatoon. Good morning.

You damn Canadian bastards, take all this snow

back. We don't make it Mike. Yes, you do All

right, so we are continuing on in Marvelous March

and this time around we're talking about two

Iron Man trades armor wars and extremis When

did you first become enthralled with Iron Man

was it the comics was it the 94 cartoon series?

What was it? I was I think I think Iron Man was

96 now that I'm thinking about it It was like

94, 95, somewhere in there. Yeah, somewhere around

there. No, it was pretty much with the comics.

It's actually right around this era where Armour

Wars was published with Bob Layton and doing

David Michelin doing the writing and Mark D.

Bright doing the art. This is probably one of

my favorite eras of the title. You know, it was

just after you know, Tony it was the period where

Tony Stark was firmly on the wagon It was all

about him trying to rebuild or trying to build

up stark enterprises after losing stark industries

and You know around the time he started building

alternate armors kind of started to become the

thing in this era Because I mean like one of

my favorite armors was You know the clad it's

called referred to as like the classic arm, which

is the red and gold with like the These are the

pods he had on his hips which were basically

the same Version of the army war from like the

mid 70s up until this Until the mid 80s like

this and I just went on from there you know then

the cartoons came and the movies and Tony Stark's

always been a character I liked There he's like

kind of the kind of sort of a Batman s character

in the Marvel universe and the fact that you

know, he has a secret identity and uses his wealth

to finances you know his technology and his war

against crime, but It's he just around this time.

It was just him more or less defending stark

enterprises against you know all comers and This

is right around the time I started reading Iron

Man on any regular basis. Good times had by all.

Yes, exactly. For me, it was September 24th,

1994 when Iron Man's cartoon series for Marvel

Entertainment first hit the airwaves. I really

enjoyed it. I thought it was great. You know,

it was along the same lines as X -Men, Spider

-Man, now Iron Man. Later in, I think, 95 would

be fantastic for Hulk, that crappy 1996 series

would happen. Wasn't crappy. Yes, it was crappy.

No, it wasn't. Yes, it was. We'll agree to disagree.

Crappy. I love the Iron Man cartoon series. I

thought it was great. Going back and watching

it on DVD since Disney before they released the

entire set on DVD with this and Spider -Man and

X -Men a couple years ago. A few years ago actually.

And I really liked it. I thought it was great.

You know, you've got Robert Hayes as Iron Man

Tony Stark. You've got James Avery as War Machine.

May he rest in peace. And Gilbert as the Mandarin

in season one. Robert Ito was the Mandarin in

season two. Jim Cummings was Modok. How can you

beat Darkwing Duck being Modok? I mean, come

on, you know. My favorite Modok is still that

one from superhero squad. Tom Kenny. Yeah, no,

he's a good one. Yeah. And then you have Jennifer

Hale as Spider -Woman slash Julia Carpenter in

season two. Just a really, really great overall

cast, overall cartoon, and that was kind of my

introduction to Iron Man. I actually thought

Iron Man was like that first season where it

was like that straight -up, you know, good versus

evil He -Man and the Masters of the Universe

kind of... You know, it is you know that that's

how I thought Iron Man was like watching the

cartoons It was a little bit of confusion for

me as a kid reading the comics and it's like

well Why does it he have like this giant vault

full of armors and you know, why isn't the Mandarin

got green skin and Although, you know since then

I've gotten read a lot of comics and Mandarin

is one of my favorite Iron Man villains You know,

it's just the cartoon was that great introduction

to the character for pretty much everybody that

if you didn't know Iron Man before Which is probably

why I like I like armored adventures Yeah But

it's just those the character designs is like

nobody like eat a burger people like my god Okay,

but you gotta remember though armored adventures

came out right after the first Iron Man film

So well, they were trying to go off of that kind

of style. Well, I get that it's just that everyone

looked as thin as oh God I'm blanking on what

the plate pepper in the movie Gwyneth Peltrow,

like everyone looked as skinny as Gwyneth Peltrow,

just like, you know, eat some meat people, that's

all I'm saying. Yeah, the funny thing is now

looking at this at the 94 series is Tony Steedman

was Justin Hammer in season one, in season two

Alfred played Justin, the voice of Justin Hammer,

Ephraim Zimbalist Jr. was Justin Hammer in season

two of the 94 Iron Man cartoon, oh my god! So

still better than and it's just escaping or the

the cackling madman that played justin hammer

and armored adventures Yeah, armored adventures

was cool for what it is But like I said the 94

series was my introduction iron and then of course

the film The film was great And a lot of people

rag on iron man 2 I get it they don't like it

or it but iron man 2 to me was Hey, look We actually

went back to the 94 series, or the comic, whichever

you prefer to feel that they went back to look

at. And hey, look, here's Armor Wars! We're gonna

give you a movie with Armor Wars, and we're gonna

give you Justin Hammer in the form of douchebag

Sam Rockwell and everything else. I really enjoyed

Armor Wars for what it was. Sure, it's not the

best movie that Marvel's produced, but... By

no means is it the worst. It's no Electra, thank

God. I'm sorry, what movie? Electra. They never

made an Electra movie, Mike. Yes, they did. No,

they didn't. Yes, they did. Sadly, they did.

No, no, they didn't. And people keep telling

me they made prequels to the Star Wars movies.

I was like, you're all high. Right. Denial ain't

a river in Egypt, people. Yes. And then we have

Iron Man 3, which will take the Extremis storyline

and adapt it. And that was the funniest thing

when I watched Armored Adventures is I watched

it after, I believe, Iron Man 3. I watched Season

2 after Iron Man 3 came out, I think, because

I was like, okay, well, I've seen Extremis in

the movie. What are they going to do with it

in the series, with our Armored Adventures? It

wasn't anything. Armored Adventures version of

Extermis is more... It's closer to the comics

than the movie was. Yeah, it's closer to the

comics than the movie was. there is that so yeah

that's that's our experience with iron man uh

first up we are going to talk about armor wars

and then after that we'll talk about extremis

so stay tuned you shut down iron man or shield

shut down stark enterprises period effective

immediately i'm terminating iron man's employment

by stark enterprises to put it simply He's fired.

You can lie in public all you want, but don't

lie to me! Why do you always push away the people

who care the most about you? I don't know. Why

won't you talk to me? Tony! it is time so it's

actually not called armor wars in the comic that's

the thing it's like the what do you call it popular

usage and all that it's in the years since it's

been published it's become known as armor wars

but in the comics actually called Stark Wars

yeah well you know the trade that I have and

I know it does it says it says Stark War in the

book but the trade I have giant white letters

at the at the foot of iron man armor wars well

it's just if you look on the wiki it says in

the full page ads that they had you know the

armor war begins in iron man 225 and that's that's

that's what it is it's like stark wars like no

it's armor wars it's just eh it's when did this

originally get published this is originally published

uh uh december of 87 to june of 88 over the almost

10 year with uh like this was an 80s comic oh

my god wow i thought this was 90s well you know

it was the 80s because stoney tony stark had

a permed mullet yeah i guess yeah which they

reflected in the second season of the iron man

cartoon and let's face it yes they did you know

after giving them like the straight up you know

uh harold hughes You know mustache and trim in

the first season and the god -awful CGI Armoring

up sequence and yeah You know still it's that

they did manage to work in the whole Attaché

case Iron Man armor, which is a classic element

for so many years But yeah, it's uh First I love

I gotta say throughout this thing Mark Bright's

art is really what got me into Iron Man as a

kid Like this is like probably one of my definitive

Iron Man artists outside of like say Salvador

Larocca who did like the initial two or three

years of Iron Man like post Heroes Reborn and

that so But yeah first issue Iron Man's getting

shot at Yeah and the reason why i thought this

was 90s because of the flamboyant art that is

used and the style ladies and gentlemen i know

people are probably tired of hearing me bitching

about the colors and all that stuff and everything

else but i'm sorry i'm kind of glad i wasn't

reading comics back in the late 80s early 90s

because looking at it now and comparing it to

and it's not just me comparing it to dc but looking

at everything else i read right now transformers

over at IDW like the style now and the way things

are done now I like more and the whole time with

this book and we're gonna go through it I don't

think we're gonna go through all of it every

single page but we're gonna go through quite

a bit of this as I kept reading this I'm like

I know all this I've seen all this before in

both The Cartoon Series and Iron Man 2. I'm like,

of course it's Justin Hammer that's behind it

all. Of course, you know, it's probably Mandarin's

gonna show up or Dr. Doom or, you know, Feng

Feng Fung. Who knows, you know? But yeah, I just...

I just can't get past the art of the old comics.

I don't know. I mean, I'm not gonna take a point

off my final rating for it, but it just... This

is not the art that I enjoy. I'll suck all the

joy out of the episode Mike That's what I'm here

for Yeah, but I think the thing for me a niggling

nitpick about the story is not so like cuz I

Didn't really pay attention to the dialogue back

then But it's like you With every Iron Man issue,

you got this inner monologue as like, I'll just

use a mental command to cybernetically trigger

my boot thrusters. It's, you know, cause I get

you say, cause like I've read the comics, I've

read the cartoon and the writing did get better

where he isn't constantly like running off a

mental checklist of like, okay, I have to use

my left cheekbone to activate my repulsor gauntlet

and stuff like that. So yeah, this is somewhat

dated now, but Still no less awesome It's very

very dead and how dare They have a villain known

as shockwave Without having one eye and being

purple. That's wrong. That's so wrong No, it's

different company coincidence. That's all it

is So yeah, but so to get back to the story iron

man's testing a new radar system for the military

or defense system for the military and this is

where again the armor he's wearing and he's worn

this for many years now it's referred to amongst

fans as the silver centurion armor ran it for

many years uh red and silver you know big shoulder

pads almost no neck and so he finishes the test

he runs off he meets up with roadie switches

out of his armor rides in says so what did you

think general is like God works and then he Does

what Tony Stark does best is he picks up a chick

and he goes for lunch for two days in Nome, Alaska

Which hey Tony Stark Again, yeah, that's that's

something that's some Bruce Wayne level crap

right there but he goes back and he starts analyzing

this armor from a former foe named force and

He discovers that part of the technology in the

weapons grid or at weapons activation grid I

believe is the precise term contains some of

his own personal technology like stuff that's

only supposed to be in the Iron Man armor and

When roadie rolls into the story, he finds Tony

going, you know, pardon my French ape shit and

tearing the hell out of his lab Yeah Yeah, I'm

you know, here's the thing, you know They said

in the cartoon series and I say it here that

the Iron Man technology is not patented and I

understand why Tony didn't want to do that because

then everyone would have access to it But he's

basically shooting himself in the foot. Well,

yeah, I mean it's It's you you can hear the giant

for sounding well, duh You know coming from somewhere

off -screen And it's just nuts. It's it's it's

an eventuality that just never came to mind and

You know, why should it? But the fact that he

never patented it You know leads into his guilt

over you know, like it's all his fault for every

armored guy that uses any aspect of this technology

You know, it kind of falls on his shoulders like

it's not exactly his fault as roadie tells them

any times in the story But it's the idea it's

still it's if he had never created this this

would never happen, you know You know, it's the

what -if game and that's never a good thing when

you start playing the what -if game So, you know,

he he's like, okay, I got to deal with this and

he makes up a list of Armored characters throughout

the Marvel Universe. There's the aforementioned

shockwave. Dr. Doom's stilt man the mauler professor

power You know classic folks like the titanium

man crimson dynamo the controller Crimson dynamo

the titanium man and the controller I can see

but professor power Well kind of a name is that

it's Marvel Comics. We have a guy named spider

-man Yeah, but spider -man sounds higher professor

power sounds like professor power sounds like

mr. Burns's alter ego when he's running the nuclear

power plant in Springfield for Christ's sake

no just Monty Burns Yeah, I mean they've got

a super villain named the beetle Who doesn't

actually speak with an English accent though

they gave him one in the Iron Man cartoon So

But yeah, so Tony makes up a list of all these

armored guys who could possibly benefit from

his technology and then he goes to He goes to

talk to You know the former force You know Carl

Walker and ask them you ever consider, you know

all the people you hurt using the You know using

my technology is like where did you get the technology

from your armor? and then you know it also Tony's

like yeah but you got the really powerful designs

from Justin Hammer and it yeah it just goes and

like they have this kind of cool scene where

Tony's uh you know he's helping with this demonstration

of these new tanks you know it's basically he's

got two of them strapped to his arm and his armor

and he's going through like you know you see

like a quick origin story of You know him stepping

on a landmine and building the original gray

armor and becoming an Avenger and you see some

of the you know alternate armors he started building

and He basically You know he he flipped he loses

his shit Yeah, he does breaks the tanks flies

off, but this is Tony Stark in the 80s You know

so he goes to see a movie premiere with this

You know is it is it Ray? Forget who was he went

for a date with I'm just looking here. Oh Brie.

Okay. I was thinking of another yeah Yeah, there's

a Ray Lacoste who was like a longtime like on

again off again kind of Vicky Bale girlfriend

for Iron Man but yeah so he goes to see this

movie premiere with Brie and the violence kind

of gets to him and he takes off and he basically

decides to Go on the armor wars. I mean, so one

of the first things he does is he goes to Abe

Zimmer, who basically he plots to hack Hammer

Enterprises or Hammer Industries and teams up

with the second Ant -Man, Scott Lang, to do this.

Scott Lang was a cool Ant -Man. Have you ever

seen the Avengers, Earth's Mightiest Heroes episode?

That's more or less the origin of him where he

was his kidnap his daughter's kidnapped. He was

forced to steal the ant -man technology from

Hank M And they go on from here and it's like

a five -second cameo basically Yeah, but yeah,

so he gets in they hack hammer They find it like

a master list of all the guys who use the Iron

Man technology as well as who? Actually stole

it which was the spy master who's who's I'm trying

to think of a Batman analog, you know, he's basically,

he's kind of like, I can, the closest thing I

can think of, he's like the Wrath. He's just

a straight up anti -Iron Man sort of character,

the spymaster. So, you know, they've got the

master list and the first thing that Tony does

after that is while he plans to take out all

the armored guys himself, he also gets the business

side of things going. Yeah. Do you think there

was a hope in hell of this working in the first

place? The business side? Yeah. No. No. No, not

really. So yeah, he gets the business side going,

supposedly, and then he goes on his crusade,

and the first one he goes to take down is Stilt

Man. Oh, I'm sorry. It's just because it's like

reading It's like that Oh when we did the black

cat Mm -hmm, you know, and it's just the first

thing I thought is like I am still He's like

sit there give it or like half a hug he's like

go let it out let it out Yeah still man just

Of all the characters, and I'm pretty sure Stanley

created Stiltman... You just weren't hitting

that creative stride that day, Stan, were you?

I... You know, I love Stan. He's an awesome guy.

He created a lot of the heroes and villains we

know and love. But yeah... Stiltman, it just

doesn't... What were you thinking? It just doesn't

make sense. Like, where are you gonna go? You've

got, you know, you've got Iron Man who can fly.

You've got, um, who else can fly in the Marvel

Universe? Um, Wasp. Uh, you've got, uh, you know,

all these people that can just... I mean, hell,

you've got Captain America who can leap tall

buildings in a single bound. And he could...

You know, just jump through your friggin' stilt

legs if you're, you know, using that. I just...

That's the worst idea for a villain ever. I mean,

he was created to be a villain for Daredevil,

which... Still... On some level, I can see it.

But, yeah, just... Stilt man? Really? Still,

Daredevil? I mean, come on. Yes, Matt Murdock

is blind, but he's not deaf. He's gonna hear

a guy walking... on 50 -foot metal legs. I hesitate

to say he's blind, but he's not that blind. Yeah,

but I mean the best part of this encounter and

the thing is like he stilt man jettisons his

like telescoping legs and flies off and Iron

Man's like batter up and he just he cracks him

upside his head with his own legs and then he

drops a negator pack which is basically this

device that It scans and then it sends an electrical

charge that destroys all proprietary Iron Man

technology in the suit. It destroys the armor

without destroying the person inside the suit.

I believe looking at the page here it fuses wiring

and turns plastic to powder. It basically renders

any of his technology useless. and then he goes

back we go back to the business side with his

Bert his lawyer who later on in the comics like

just becomes like one of the best slimy lawyers

because he gets fired by Tony Stark and then

there's a there's a Cathy Dare I think is like

this psychotic stalking ex -girlfriend sort of

thing You know, and they try to like, oh, Tony

Stark abused me, blah, blah, blah. He just turns

into a deliciously evil piece of work later on.

But yeah, so basically we can't use any of the

evidence from our hack because, well, it's illegal

or is obtained illegally and therefore inadmissible.

And probably one of the straightest or easiest

things that Iron Man deals with in here is he

goes after the mauler, Brendan Doyle, and he's

like, look. Just give me the armor." And he's

like, Oh, here you go, laddie, it's yours. You

know, and then he's like, yeah, that was a sweet

meal ticket. I'll just steal me another set of

armor. Probably the smartest supervillain that

Tony Stark has ever dealt with because, you know,

mama didn't raise no fool. Yeah. And then, yeah,

and here, then he goes back and he's taught,

we're talking to Bert again the following week.

And he's like, well, the technology was never

patented in fact that could possibly be in the

public domain oh that's what that's what it is

yeah wow okay no no i i'm remembering armor wars

part two wrong and what i mean by armor wars

part two is i mean the actual animated series

episode see i thought he said he didn't pat in

his technology and fear of people getting it.

Well, no, but it's because he didn't do it that

people are now getting it. I get it. Well, yeah,

he didn't pat it because he didn't want to people

get his hands in it. But, you know, he obviously

didn't. Well, it's not like a supervillain is

going to waltz in and steal my technology. That

could never happen. Yoink. Yeah. And then we

have the scene where he basically Futs is his

way into one of the controllers Church or cult

headquarters or whatever, you know, it is disguised

as a spa and You know see the controllers. It's

got this little robot arm. That's a planting

a planting implanting slave discs on unsuspecting

people and then well I love the fact that it

still takes him like the better part of 30 seconds

or a minute to get into his armor back then.

So there's like an army of zombified henchmen

coming after him and Rhodey. And Rhodey's like,

I got this. And Tony's like, okay, I'm just going

to get dressed. So, you know, he comes back and

Rhodey's somewhere. You don't know where exactly

and then the controller you he sends like the

masses after Iron Man Then the controller tries

to choke Iron Man and ends up crushing some dude

Between the two of them and then well Tony decides

to let off a little steam Yeah, and well he I

would say he came, you know pretty close to cashing

someone's ticket If not for the fact that you

know, he comes back the last second when the

worshippers try to take him off and you know,

he pops in a gator pack and Takes out the controller

and though the thing is the controller isn't

just some dude in a suit of armor. He's It's

the suit of our it's like half life support system

It basically gets that there was a point later

on after armor wars where some evil corporate

types who wanted revenge on Tony Stark for something

infect him with like a cybernetic or cyber organic

virus that like takes over his nervous system

and he has to wear the armor just to move. It's

kind of the same thing with a controller where

he's just jacked up outside of it so he has to

wear the armor to you know even live. But yeah

the the controller gets kind of he gets his gets

his shit wrecked pretty good. and then he goes

back and and this is one of my favorite scenes

with Bert the lawyer like like I said eventually

he gets fired by Tony Stark not in this story

but he's like but I've got you know we can't

link the robberies to Mr. Hammer you know we're

going there there we're making a case for your

civil rights being violated but we may be able

to secure your rights to it. You know, he's like,

we're going to secure future rights to the use

of technology. And better yet, we've nailed down

a hearing date, August 12th, 1989, which is like

two years hence. And Tony's like, what the what?

Yeah. He's like, really? Really? And just the

look on Bird's face, he's like, sir, did I not

do a good thing? He's like, get out. Yeah. It's

a little out there. Well, what do you mean, the

court date or Tony's reaction? Both. Yeah. I

mean, that's the way civil rights, like intellectual

property cases, they take frigging forever. And

even Burt says, well, actually, sir, with the

current backlog of court cases, we were lucky

to get that, so. Yeah. Could you see the armor

wars lasting like two years like Just every issue

somebody mentions like hey, we're a little bit

closer that court date, sir No, I totally just

glaring daggers and threatening to fire. It's

all it's bad enough in comics and Companies try

to do a year -long event let alone Six -month

event a two -year event. No, oh my god. I would

die. I would not be able to keep up I If that

had happened I would have dropped the damn title

What I find and I know I should have mentioned

this with the cover to 225 but I didn't notice

it but 226 was 75 cents in the US and 95 cents

in Canada Wow God, I feel old when I think of

what I used to pay for comics Compared to what

you're paying now. Yeah Mean 20 bucks at comics

back then and I'd have almost a short box full

of crap Yeah, okay, let's just go to 226 because

otherwise I'm just gonna get morose here Yeah,

226 the cover is Iron Man versus stingray Yeah

And you know target stingray Yeah, no, it's that

was actually one of my favorite scenes in The

animated version of armor wars where you know,

he He jetted and we'll get to that in the story

here where he encounters where he fights stingray

And then he kind of loses his crap and it goes

to Robert Hayes voice work his voice acting in

that episode how you hear like the desperation

of Tony and all that and It's I mean it's just

because it plays so well, but yeah, this issue

opens up with some another bunch of they're well

kind of classic or members of Iron Man's rogues

gallery the Raiders who are basically hijackers

who wear powered armor to rip off airplanes and

such and I love them it's that they're stealing

from the Air Force and I love the Air Force in

comics like they're transporting weapons For

to resupply someplace and one guy is like, hey,

we're getting hijacked and this other guy is

like I'm just gonna open the shit We're carrying

so we could have something to defend ourselves

with you know, cuz you see I'm like, oh sure

there They're transporting electronic components,

but he reaches in a crate and he pulls out like

an m16 Yeah, and then he gets sucked up to side

of the plane Yeah, yeah, that's just crazy Kind

of reminds me of the hole in Air Force one Yeah,

where everyone gets sucked out like that. Yeah.

Yeah, it's like sure you saved 13 people I'm

pretty sure there are a few bodies left on the

plane Tony Yeah, but he did what he could so

Well, no that well, we'll get into that another

you know, and then he got hit by a truck if you

thought he was dead But yeah, so iron man takes

out the Raiders with a nick with negator packs

Although he does have that great kind of iron

man moment where he takes out He takes out the

first guy Pardon me and he does like the Superman

finger flick Yeah And the other guys are just

like Yeah, so they take the pilot hostage and

iron man flies out and He flies through the windshield

takes out the other guy and then takes the third

one out in midair and just basically Let's the

guy soil his armor And it's just wrong well,

yeah, and then we go to a secluded Long Island

estate and another another Iron Man corporate

Iron Man villain versus a supervillain villain

and It's Edwin Kord, and this guy is like...

I don't know if Mark Bright meant to draw him

to look kind of like Jack Kirby, although that's

kind of who he resembles. Kord is basically like

an eviler version of Justin Hammer without the

suave sophistication. Let me put it this way.

Justin Hammer is like a Doberman like Pinscher

and Cord is like a Rottweiler Yeah, you mean

young Justin Hammer, right when you say suave

because old Justin Hammer was just old and crotchety

He's well in the cartoon. Yeah, but in the comic

books. He's like really Iron Man. What did I

do? Can you prove it? You know No, that's anything

is The funny thing is this Edwin guy when I'm

first looking at only hey What's J Jonah Jameson

doing going up against Iron Man? That one panel

the flat top and the cigar yeah Missing the Hitler

stash and yeah, and the thing is it's The way

he's written in the story is like he's supposed

to be like this big bad and really the Tony Stark

is pretty much he's like kind of the actual big

bad in the story it just in the fact that It's

really you know it really is all his fault. It's

Just this guy just kind of tries to capitalize

on the situation like Tony's the one that's going

around like beating up people and You know fusing

their armor like stuff happens where basically

He goes back to se you know, gets his messages

from Miss Arbogast, who is one of the better

Iron Man supporting characters, because it's

like, you want to talk about crotchety, she's

crotchety and whip smart at the same time, and

she helps protect Tony from a lot of unnecessary

crap, as a good secretary should, or executive

assistant, because they have this scene where,

like, I'm doesn't people burst in the office

this can't wait i need to talk to you i need

your signature on this and she's like shut the

hell up calm down or i will get a whip and of

course first one up is burke the lawyer who uh

stilt man suing uh stark for excessive use or

iron man's excessive use of force and the controller's

cult is filing a class action suit for infringement

on freedom on their freedom to worship And then

oh my god, and then mark was it Marcy the pub

PR lady Comes in and she's you know starts to

bitch Tony out for the dirty hairy stance that

Iron Man is assuming right now Yeah Almost I

can think of with the interaction between Tony

and in this in this secretary is Fletcher and

Greta from Liar Liar? Jim Carrey and, uh... Very

much so. Yeah. Well, I'd say Greta's a little

closer to what I said about Ms. Arvo Goss, but

I get what you're saying. Yeah, but that's what

I'm talking about, the secretary, not Rhodey's

wife. Oh, girlfriend. But yeah, it's, uh... Whatever,

she eventually becomes his wife, right? No. eventually

eventually she breaks up and after Burke the

lawyers fired they In an addition to him being

that Kathy dares or they basically just try to

tear Cody stark down because they blame him for

all the crap that Happens to them when it's really

their own fault You know, it was the it's like

to quote that line from suburban commando This

is the 90s. We're gonna sue you You know just

but that's what it is so they so eventually Tony

and roadie go to see Abe again and You know,

he just he comes up with like an I guess he refines

the list of Whoever used the Iron Man technology

even more Yeah, and you see stuff like Victor

Von Doom the fixer frog man It was the stilt

man frog man Iron Man spider -man We're lucky

it wasn't the Incredible Hulk man really But

yeah, so yeah is it's basically everybody he

figures out everybody on the list is a bad guy

except for There's a possibility that the US

government bought the technology and used it

in stingray suit. I Mean you look at stingray

pretty much looks like Spandex with wings, but

he looks like a cross between Omega red and an

archangel. Yeah, he does like costume design.

He does have that So yeah, he's like I gotta

go deal with this. Oh crap Avengers alert and

Basically, he goes and gets bitched out by the

Avengers West Coast and he's like look trust

me. I got this I got this And they're like sure

Tony you got this And then he calls, you know,

like I said, Ray Lacoste, who's like this stylist

and unlike most of the girls that Tony has dated

in life, she's a little more understanding, a

little more worldly, you know, she takes it all

in stride. So what does he do? He goes and plays

tennis and then, you know, Marcy and Rhodey have

a fight and it's basically she wants him to help

her You know do her job and kind of advance yourself

a little bit and roadie doesn't really want to

You like basically tells her I don't want to

choose between you or my best friend Yeah, and

that's really what it was he's like, you know

what I have a headache I'm not gonna stay over

tonight Yeah, maybe that's best Yeah, and then

you see oh look Tony and Ray spent the night

together Not surprised surprising. No, yeah Although

Ray comes out in the classic wearing the guy's

shirt in the morning after and while their hair

is both of their hair is still perfectly coiffed

Yeah, because she's got that 80s swept to the

side and well his fabulous mullet I think What's

your name? Miss miss Brown did better in in Iron

Man. Yes Miss Everheart. Yeah. No, she definitely

had it better. And there we go to probably one

of my, at least it makes more sense to me. I

thought that Iron Man goes after Stingray. At

this point, he's based out of Hydra Base, which

was this artificial island that was just off

the coast of New York that had like a alternate

Avengers mansion. It was basically, it's kind

of like the island from G .I. Joe Extreme. Mm

-hmm, you know cuz it can it's giant a giant

floating barge basically and Right that would

have made more sense for the Avengers to base

like a few miles outside of the city So if super

villains do attack them like there isn't gonna

be that much in the way of collateral damage

Although they're probably picketed by Greenpeace

24 -7 Damn hippies But yeah, so he goes to face

Stingray. He's like, look, dude, you're an Avenger.

I'm an Avenger. I just want to scan your armor.

And Stingray is like, nope, government property.

Yeah. And then Iron Man's like, look, I'm not

going to hurt you. I just want to scan the armor.

And Stingray is like, nuts to that and flies

away. And they have like a pretty... I'd say

a pretty cool like underwater superhero fight

and then You know Iron Man, you know tags him

with a negator pack and nothing happens and Then

he's like but that means he there was none of

my tick. Oh crap Whereas in the cartoon you hear

Iron Man basically have like a nervous breakdown

before he flies away and then Tony Stark, you

know, he goes you rescue stingray. Look, sorry

my bad, bro. My bad Yeah, it's stingrays like

yeah sure. I'll put it in my report douche Yeah,

and then he goes back and everyone's like you

something must be done. This is a publicity nightmare

The US government is suing us. So what does Tony

do? He fires Iron Man Yeah, and although I love

the last phrase he's like Painful as it is, I'm

afraid that I must terminate Iron Man's contract.

Henceforth, Iron Man is no longer to be associated

with Stark Enterprises in any form or manner.

To put it in layman's terms, and to quote Vince

McMahon, he's fired. Yeah, I... You know, I...

Does... Julia doesn't figure into this at all,

does she? Julia Carpenter never became a factor...

In this in the comic version until just a few

couple years before they had onslaught Iron Man,

you know Because it was the 90s and they wanted

to be more extreme and Iron Man left the Avengers

because the Avengers were too reactive he wanted

to be proactive and He formed Forceworks, which

is right the team that he had in You know like

the first season of iron man which was his own

version of avengers and it was based out of like

this top secret stark r &d facility yeah it was

hawkeye spider woman century century vision well

uh or homer or whatever is uh computer. I like

Homer. Homer was my first introduction to Tony

Stark having a computer. I liked Homer. I thought

Homer was cool. And then of course, Paul Bettany

had to go and make Jarvis even better. Yeah,

well, I love the Homer in the cartoon because

he had some sick burns on war machine. It was

so good. Yeah, and then well actually the cartoon

Hawkeye. Hawkeye was never part of Forceworks

in the comics, that role was filled by the U

.S. agent, but for some reason or another they

couldn't use him to... It's probably branding,

because the cartoon you want it to have as many

characters as people are going to recognize,

so... Or creator rights or something like that.

But yeah, so we go into... Chapter 3. Chapter

3, The Last Mandroid. And you know, it's it's

not a hard day's night for the beetle and having

a giant shoe dropped on him. It's. You know,

it's a fairly standard, but more, I think, more

exciting sort of thing. A fight between him and

the between Iron Man, the beetle. And if you

pay attention during this fight, you get a few

like celebrity cameos. I mean, on the very first

page. There's like, I think it's supposed to

be like Richard Pryor. And then there's this

guy in the bottom right corner. It's like, I

do believe this calls for another beer. I mean,

that's like Norm from Cheers. And then right

the next page, you got like Don Johnson, Stallone,

Michael J. Fox. Because you see this one guy

sucking back on a cigarette. He's like, this

never happened in Miami. Yeah, that's Don Johnson.

Yeah, and then there's my this guy says check

out that armor He could probably go to the future

and back in that as like yes, we get it. Mr.

Bright This is the 80s and this is, California

But yeah, it's a like, you know it I don't know

about sly though because I'm guessing it to be

sly. It's just if it is sly the the The writing

here is all wrong. It should have been expected.

No, no, no, no, something better than that. Um,

it should have been, yeah, he's flashy, but he

wasn't the one that drew first blood. Yeah. It's

like, Oh yeah, he's flashy, but has he ever made

the cover of people? It's like, Oh, save me from

celebrities. Yeah, really? But yeah. So iron

man. beats the snot out of the beetle you know

slaps in a gator pack on him and then the security

guards I like that I like that he's like security

guards are trying to arrest him he's like you

do you realize that bullets will ricochet off

my armor right and then you know he flies back

into his secret entrance of uh you know stark

house which and that's the other thing I love

for the movie that tony's mansion in the movies

was basically based off of this version of uh,

or this residence of Iron Man. Yeah, the cliff

side. I miss that house. Whenever we do, if we

do get an Iron Man 4, I wonder what they're gonna

do with his, his residence now. I wonder if they're

gonna rebuild it or anything like that. I think

they're doing, I'm pretty sure they're doing

an Iron Man 4 with Downey, but I think at this

point he's pretty, at least I would imagine,

he's pretty much moved into like, Avengers Tower.

In NYC so but yeah, so you see iron man having

to sneak into his own wall into his basement

lab because you know He fired iron man and it

would look funny him walking out the front door

In the armor. Yeah. Yeah, and then the Avengers,

you know West Coast call him up again. It's like

dude. What the hell? it's like I got this I got

this and Eventually, I got this just isn't gonna

play later on in the story And then we got, you

know, he goes back to SI, he's dealing with the

fallout of, you know, Iron Man not being the

corporate spokesman. Rhodey gets the brush off

from Mercy, no big loss there. And then he walks

in the office, he's like, oh, Nick Fury. As I

live and breathe, yeah. Yeah, good ol' Nick Fury,

oh boy. And I love this, he's like, uh... He's

like thinking himself. I brought a court order

and Tony's like here you go Nick all my files

on Randall Pierce the man I hired to be iron

man, you know Winking a nod and then it says

like something smells like seafood here. Yeah,

and until and then You know is condit until Tony

says well, you know, once we catch this guy.

I want my armor back blah blah blah He's like,

oh, I believe him now. It's like Nick Fury. I'm

You are not nearly the conniving son of a bitch

that you should be at this point. Yeah, I know.

And, uh, you know, I'm kind of glad they never

did this, but I almost, looking at Nick in this

again, I'm like, you know, if that patch was

in the other eye, that would be the chameleon.

And I remember that episode. I mean, it's just,

this is like the cloud. This is OG. You know,

Nick Fury, you know, cigar and all. The only

man that can talk without flapping his lips and

losing his stoggy But yeah, and then rodeo besides

J besides Besides JJJ JJJ can do that too. Yeah,

jolly Jonah, and I love where Tony or not Tony

where rodeo is like Who the hell is Randall Pierce?

And he's like nobody he's a smokescreen he's

a phantom completely fake but yeah i love it

they go to the like the nyc uh shield command

post which i think this is the one that was located

underneath a abandoned barber shop you know and

then tony goes in he tracks down iron man at

an old summer home and yeah then he's like tony

starts later not starka Furious like I'm gonna

send in like a hundred uniformed agents and Tony's

like no send them androids only the man droids

everyone else will be killed understand Yeah,

you know and then for no reason whatsoever he

goes into the city and You know gets a date with

this Asian detective lady that he knows and Okay

that advanced the story in no way whatsoever

but yes, like it literally like it's like they

go on a date and He sends her off in a cab and

you know, she's like call me and He never calls

her because I'm fairly certain this woman never

shows up at any Iron Man comic ever again Yeah,

so why? Yeah, that's very true. So, you know,

we we go to the next day. They launched the operation

Randall Pierce's set up mines with negator packs

Yep, so basically the mandroids throw up shields

and they won't be affected by the negator packs

but the negator packs apparently are like Somehow

hovering around the force field and it's just

a matter of time until they run out of power

and they're taken out anyhow and Then here comes

Randall Pierce. I Just can't get over the fact

that Nick Fury bought that line of malarkey You're

supposed to be the top super spy in the friggin

world and you bought that smoke screen you don't

deserve that eyepatch No, no he doesn't so yeah,

it's like a seven or eight page fight where you

know He takes out all the man droids except one

Walks up to the guy the guy's basically crap

in his drawers So he ejects, Iron Man slaps on

in the gator pack, flies away. And then Tony

Stark, they go back to like those at the HQ in

Manhattan, and Tony Stark finds, well of course,

this is how he knew he were coming. Iron Man

broke in here and put a bug on your computer.

Right. Although he does give a sick burn on fury

on the way out He's like next time if I want

to deal with a top security organization, I'm

calling the Boy Scouts So I Know how what did

you think of that massive pile of horse apples?

Mike Stupid mute You know All these horse apples

I don't kind of like them because I feel like

I've already seen it all before I've already

read this before and I and You know getting this

to cover in Marvelous March. I thought it was

going to be slightly different than What was

in the cartoon episodes the two -part iron man

episode and it's like um Hello, it's the same

premise because it's because the cartoon episode

came from this yeah, so I think that's where

I'm kind of not liking this because Not that

this is bad It is a good story. I like it and

it but again it feels too familiar to me So But

I do like his interaction with fury because the

interaction with fury in the cartoon series was

very It was like two scenes like this, but it

wasn't as long as like the scenes in the show

weren't as long as these were yeah So I still

like that that you gotta admit. That was a sick

burn from Iron Man. Oh, it was the Boy Scouts

Yeah, that was and just the look of like uh buh

guh on furious face. I mean Like I said, you

don't deserve that eyepatch, buddy. No. It's

like, come on. What the hell? And then we get

a surprise cameo from the captain, Steve Rogers,

who, quick aside, at this point in the Captain

America comics, the government is like, well,

we own the rights to Captain America, Mr. Rogers.

And if you don't do what we say, well, you know.

Turn that shit over and it wasn't like the straight

-up like the president or the Joint Chiefs. It

was like one of those many shadowy cabals of

politicians and generals who's like do what we

say or you're out Because we're the government

and we know exactly what we're doing and Because

I'm Nick Fury and I have an eyepatch damn it.

Actually Nick Fury wasn't involved with that

In fact, if I recall correctly when he did show

up in Captain America at this time, he called

bullshit and the whole deal But he couldn't do

anything because shield wasn't wasn't an international

organization as yet so But yeah, so you know

we go to the next issue 220 or 228 sorry, and

it's you know Iron Man versus the captain Which

is basically you know Tony's created like a new

shield For I art for the captain. I keep wanting

home Captain America Just call him Captain America,

I don't care. Let's just call him Steve. Yeah.

So he creates the most terrifying superhero ever,

Steve. But yeah, he flashes back to his meeting

with Captain America. Tony's not really liking

where he's got to go next for his plan, which

is basically he's going to break into the vault,

the supervillain prison in the Rockies. And like,

because the guardsman, which is basically armor

that is one step removed from Iron Man because

Tony designed it to be like that. Well, I got

to stop that from being used because the government

can possibly abuse my technology. Civil War.

So and I love that scene where it's a quick little

moment because he hasn't gone completely around

the bend yet. at least in terms of like you know

this is the right thing this is the right thing

this is the right thing and he's sitting in a

roadside diner with roadie reminiscing about

uh you know time's gone past and then you see

uh steve is caught into the whole thing and i

love the fact that you know captain america he

had a conversation with nick fury which uh probably

went like this So, Nick, you realize that that

whole thing with Randall Pierce and the Mandroids

was complete malarkey and it was Tony the whole

time, right? And then Nick fears, son of a bitch.

Yeah, Nick is not that smart in these comics.

Yeah. Well, I mean, years later, writers like

Jonathan Hickman to really bring him back to

the crafty S .O .B. that we all know and love.

So and then Steve's like, look, I may no longer

be Captain America, but I'm still an American,

dammit. Don't do this. You know, for God and

country, Tony, don't do this. He's basically

telling us, like, look, it's the vault, they're

prison guards, this is their thing. You know,

and Tony just walks away and is like, get the

check, Rhodey, we're going home. Yeah, pretty

much. And he sits there. Looking at a schematic

of the vault and he's like hey Trojan horse that

could work and I don't want to Sound racist,

but I was like you guys couldn't tell that was

a black man in white in like beige face makeup

as electro Like I'm pretty sure you would have

taken the mask off the guy or something or found

a way to negate his electricity powers and But

yeah roadie dresses up as electro causes a ruckus

gets hauled off to the vault like they have that

whole scene where Yeah, I wish you could have

figured out some other way to get one of us in

here though Because if any brothers see me they're

gonna razz me from here to Christmas as he's

wiping the makeup off his face Yeah Oh my god,

it's like so you had the Iron Man armor with

a giant drill attached to it at this point in

the comics I'm sure dig a hole in drop a few

gas grenades drops in the gator packs. You're

done Yeah, so here's the thing ladies and gentlemen

it seems that Marvel Studios Walt Disney Pictures

and Sony pictures have been able to combine their

universes because in the Amazing Spider -Man

2 it's Roadie. I'm sorry, what? Jamie Foxx is

playing Roadie in The Amazing Spider -Man 2.

Think about it. Oh god. Oh god. Oh god. Okay.

Broke his brain ladies and gentlemen pretty much

So Tony finds the entrance to the back cave,

I mean the back door to the vault And he walks

in flies in the captain walks in after him Rhodey

is hooked up some gas grenades to the ventilation

system You know cap comes in. He's like yes Just

kidding tight must get You know he puts on an

air mask Tony or Rhodey goes to negate all the

guardsmen armors that aren't in use Except for

the one guy that just is standing stock still

there for some reason Yeah, and Tony takes out

some guardsmen blah blah blah I love where roadie

is like He's going he's going up against the

one guardsman and he pulls a gun And he's like

big deal my armor state -of -the -art. No handheld.

Well weapon can touch it and roadies like oh,

yeah How about your charging port and boom? And

unfortunately their plan It results in all the

super villains getting loose or about like they

get loose the Captain fights, you know Fight

it's just captain gets he's still kind of out

of it from the gas like he's barely got Any energy

left in him Iron Man tases him? and they have

this this long lingering bromantic stare at each

other where Tony as he's sitting there and it's

like he's got a negator pack it's the last guards

when he drops it and then he's like hey Rody's

like so good bro he's like I don't want to talk

about it You know, and he walks out and then

they end this issue on the big epilogue of like

this maintenance crew coming in to the prison

and they see that all the cells are empty. And

you would think this would play out in the next

issue of Iron Man. It doesn't. Yeah, you got

to go to Captain America number 339. And then

I do love that. Where and in Ironman 224 shellhead

goes to Russia or the 229 229 shell that goes

to Russia buy them both or we won't like you

anymore Yeah, and I can't help but think of this

this story it happened now buy them both and

we won't like you on Facebook anymore Yeah, so

true So 229 it's Shattered in Siberia. Yeah Crimson

Dynamo and Titanium Man versus Stealth Armor

Iron Man Yeah, very very cool, which is basically

the classic armor with shoulder pads Yeah, that's

true That's a little different it kind of The

cuffs on his legs look look different, but yeah

Here's the thing as soon as I saw this the next

page here the title page Star Wars chapter 5

Red snow. I'm like, okay, when's Black Widow

gonna show up to wipe out the redner ledger?

Oh, and they reference that in Marvel or all

new Marvel now point one is a it's a Issue that

came out just previewing a bunch of the all -new

Marvel now titles and and one of which is actually

I love the first issue is Loki agent of Asgard

And it's a story running through that where the

now more or less teen -aged or 20 -something

-age Loki after he died and was resurrected as

a child has become basically the Nick Fury for

Asgard. And he's going around collecting these

ancient keys. And one of the keys is talking

about ledgers dripping with red. And I was like,

yes, we get it. There's a Marvel movie universe.

I know it but that's such a Classic like such

a great line. Oh, you know That goes both towards

black widow and Loki, you know, I still love

this It's like this is the third time this issue

starts the third time the West Coast Avengers

are bitching out Iron Man and Yeah, they keep

saying what's going on and this this whole encounter

is basically like a clip show The catch people

up because if you haven't read like the first

four issues of this story Yeah Yeah, it's all

clip show. It's a oh my god Wow, and you know,

it's a clip show because the borders of the panels

are curved Well that and you know, it's a clip

show because half of the dialogue is in bright

yellow with black lettering as as model internal

monologues. Yeah And it's basically Hawkeye lays

down the law you stop this shit now and Iron

Man just walks out and Okay, and then he goes

to Russia Or he's planning to go to Russia we

we go to Russia We see Iron Man and diamond diamond.

Oh have gone to the Kremlin to talk to you like

Gorbachev and They're like surely come like grandma.

You would be more comfortable in chair I'm sure

you would think that, Conrad, but I know you

like to steal my armor, so F you. Yeah, you would

think that as soon as Tony Stark as Iron Man

flew into Russia, as soon as he turned on any

part of his suit, it would be hacked immediately.

You'd think. And we should remember that this

is the second version of the Gremlin character

to show up in the Marvel Universe, which is basically

a small person with a... bigger brain who it

just seeing him sit there in the open chest cavity

of the titanium man armor i keep thinking of

crying from the 87 from the turtles cartoon and

i could totally see crying with like one of those

long cigarette holders you know sitting there

what do i want you to do mr michael angelo i

want you to die you know i could see crying as

a bond villain basically So we got the new whoever

I forget who it was in the Crimson Dynamo armor

at this point He's like dot is my duty to defend

glorious mother Russia and then titanium man

is like Screw you guys. I'm going home And he's

like dasvidaniya and then dynamo tries to cause

like how could you turn your back on your country?

And then titanium is like really you believe

that crap and then So it's basically the the

guys in the Kremlin are like, ah, this is good

Otherwise, we would have had to formulate no

plan Now we use titanium and as bait It's kind

of like them using Omega red against Wolverine

and the X -Men very much And so yeah, so basically

we go back to California Tony is jet, you know

sprucing up the old stealth armor You know, he's

like, hey, thanks, Rody. Hey, I'll be ready in

about an hour. Why don't you take the chopper

back to SC and get the jet ready? Sure do, Tony.

See you soon. And then Tony's like, no, sorry,

Rody. Doing this on my own. I love the fact that

he didn't even wait until Rody was gone. He just

basically books it, gets dressed, and takes off.

And then Rody's like, ah, you. Good luck, man.

inner monologue he's like you son of a god speed

tony and again like i said in this comic like

you have a full page of just inner monologue

of course you know it's the 80s because you know

he he flies up and he does like i forget the

proper term for it where uh you know you do like

you go up in the high atmosphere and you hold

it for a second and let like the earth's rotation

you know cut down on the travel time. Well, you

know it's the 80s because Iron Man wishes he

had FM receiving circuits in his helmet. I'm

fairly certain Iron Man invented the internet

in the Marvel universe, but you couldn't program

in some ACDC or greatest hits of metal rock,

Tony? Like, come on. Come on, where's black Sabbath

Iron Man when you really need it, right? I would

have loved to see that comic just Tony some Tony

momentarily contemplating suing black Sabbath

for copyright infringement or something It could

have happened It couldn't happen but yeah, so

then we go to Bitter Frost which is like this

abandoned you know, Russian military base that

that titanium man uses as his headquarters and

he gets off in a personal rant. He is like, you

know, the KGB sucks, long live capitalism, blah,

blah, blah. And then we find out that the KGB

is like, he does not know that we have tagged

his place with listing devices. And then we hear

every infantile diatribe he utters. You know

those KGB they're pretty tricky yeah next they'll

be looking for the nuclear vessels That's so

bad Yeah, so you know Iron Man pops in You know

tries to tell him what's what you know that and

the gremlin even for you know unarmored He's

got like a gun that's capable of taking out You

know probably would have been able to take out

the stealth armor because it doesn't really have

much in the way of armor actual weapons Yeah,

and then so he goes out the dynamo shown up.

He's been taken out by the defense system And

they get to fighting and Iron Man lays him out

with a negator pack Although it's the middle

of friggin Siberia at this point, so I was like

you really think that was a smart move Tony The

guy's probably gonna freeze No, it's good. It's

going to be a Russian sickle or something. Oh,

God, that's a I'm sorry. I got better puns in

me. Believe me. I apologize. I'd let that be

stricken from the record. So, you know, Iron

Man tries taking out Titanium Man and he ends

up setting his armor on fire. And how that yeah,

he's taken him for right in the upper atmosphere,

but. I didn't know this where titanium, I didn't

know titanium combusts. Like you heat it up to

a certain point, and it takes a lot, but you

heat this up enough to the point where it's gonna

start slagging, it literally bursts into fire.

And well, he, Iron Man just... That's what happens

when you're super cool hot metal. No, like the

metal literally like bursts on fire. Yeah, and

it's like thermite or they're in similar effects

sort of thing. But yeah, so Iron Man inadvertently

kills the titanium man and Interlude oh look

here's Edwin cord and project firepower and Okay,

hi Bye Yeah, and finally he goes back in the

Avengers column and again. It's like dude you

killed somebody What the hell and then Hawkeye's

finally like you're done get out give us your

card I Was like really it took you four or five

separate meetings like I think after the first

week of Iron Man running around Slagging people's

armor causing untold amounts of property damage

ruining certain lives. I'm sure you And this

is like pretty well, I think timeline wise this

is almost a month after the armor war started

Yeah, like really Yeah took you this long. I'm

surprised. You know, it's like to quote roadie

in the second film I'm surprised the army isn't

rolling down the PCH right now Yeah Yeah, so

Iron Man gets fired from the Avengers And we

go to the almost penultimate issue dead 230 death

of a hero Yeah, I do like that cover though.

Oh, yeah, it was pretty cool. You see iron man

getting his Getting his stuff wrecked pretty

good And you know, it's bad when the armor is

practically splintering Yeah And so and there

were the day the hero died Stark Wars chapter

6 And we go to, you know, Edwin Cord's, uh, some

facility he owns. He's with the military. And

there's this guy training to take out Iron Man.

And... You find out, like, this is just... They

make this issue, they make it out to be, like,

this was, like, where it was going all along

with, like, Edwin Cord. It's like, you've shown

up twice in the storyline so far. Does it, do

you even matter? Ultimately no probably not you

know and then you find that firepower is like

this new Armored weapons system, and it's you

know it's a ready defense. It's the so -called

superheroes step out of line Really So yeah pretty

much And it's you know, so we go back to se and

iron man is reading the paper, you know Russia

iron man murderer and he's staring down a bottle

of well looks like Johnny Walker Yeah, and it's

the whole thing about you know, he's he's on

the wagon, you know, he doesn't need booze and

He roadie knows this but he still is like, you

know crawling into a bottle ain't gonna help

nothing Nope you know and then he goes to uh

we go to Acutech which is a subsidiary of Stark

he was talking to Zimmer and basically they he's

created a virus that's gonna perpetually run

through the internet and any time it comes across

any information in regards to the Iron Man technology

it deletes it see the problem I have with this

whole story right there is exactly that the whole

thing like as we said in the earlier Earlier

part of the episode this came out in the 80s

We didn't have the internet in the 80s not the

internet that we know today. Well, it was DARPA

net back then so Businesses in the military are

basically the only ones that you could really

Get onto the like the information Highway was

there. It wasn't quite the information superhighway,

but you know, we do see immediate effects of

the viruses front company of hammers in LA, everyone

loses their crap because the virus has wiped

out all the Iron Man information. And then we

go to see the Iron Monger, I mean, firepower.

Yeah, because that's what it's it's the friggin

Iron Monger armor with but it's like the late

80s. So we got to have belt pods and rocket pods

and these rib looking things and oh look we've

got missiles we've got missiles for days nobody

can mess with us because we have so many missiles

yeah and it's oh it's a giant jacked up battle

suit you know again this story and i i know i

sound like a broken record after an hour talking

about this this these these issues but it just

the story doesn't impress me It's cuz I've seen

it before well, and I think the cartoon did it

better. I'm sorry to say I really really do I

would argue the cartoon did it okay, but they

didn't have as much detail about you know what's

going through Tony's head and how he regrets

all these actions, but he feels they're justified

because he's trying to cleanse his own guilty

conscience, so I prefer the comic version but

I mean, both stories have pros and cons. But

you see Tony suiting up, he goes up to his orbiting

space satellite, which has been rendered inoperative

due to a techno -organic plague that the advanced

IDM mechanics have created. And then he tracks

down one final user of his stolen technology.

He goes back to Essie to plan some more. Oh wait,

here's the army and the senator that's behind

firepower Basically, we want to help you take

out we want you to help take out Iron Man or

we'll sue you into the grave And Iron Man's just

like ah, I'm yours It is basically looking to

pull like a Nick Fury or what he did with Nick

Fury and You know they go I think it's telling

that you know Tony knew this wasn't gonna end

well because he's basically got a mobile triage

unit set up in the You know the whirlybird that

he's got going like extra blood and all that

Yeah, and he goes to fight Firepower, you know

firepower is like I got missiles for days son

Because that's all he does he's got nipple lasers

and missiles And a neutron bomb, you know, strapped

to his back. But he doesn't use a neutron bomb

because he's got missiles and then green lasers.

And then what? You didn't think we were going

to come up a way to block this stupid negator

pack by now? And Iron Man is like, oh shit. Yeah,

it took them long enough to figure that out,

though. You figured at least Russia, because

this is like at the height or right before the

end of the Cold War. where you know it was the

purportedly the russians were stealing american

technology left right and center there's no actual

proof of that you think they would have come

up with a way to you deal with iron man that

you know is either going to be a russian version

of the gator pack that maybe would have worked

or there just would have been da comrade we have

missiles for days i'm sorry i love saying that

because that's that's what firepower is about

i mean he is missiles for days he grabs a hold

of iron man he gives him a point blank shot to

the chest yeah and tony's like bones broken bleeding

in mouth hair perfectly fine yeah because you

can't damage that mullet yeah no and then so

yeah they finally uh well i'm sure it was like

a low yield nuke that firepower had because they

wrote he fought Tony flies to the chopper and

then seemingly flies out and Firepower shoots

the nuke at him and he nukes Iron Man and and

the end of the story is Iron Man's helmet could

have pieces literal pieces Raining down in the

desert with Iron Man's helmet cracked open and

blood covering it on the inside Yeah, I mean

it's a it's a hardcore way to go don't get me

wrong yeah i don't think pepper wants to kiss

kiss that faceplate no it's like oh it tastes

like panties so we go to the final issue of the

storyline 231 who is the new iron man as you

see tony building what uh this is probably my

absolute favorite version design of the iron

man armor It's a classic update. It's returned

to the red and gold. It's a kind of a new update

of like the Like I said, it's a classic red and

gold armor. I just love this. I actually have

the Marvel select action figure version of this

Which is a lot of fun Very cool. So yeah, so

we started reborn again chapter 7 and it's let's

see wheel of fortune gilligan's island news news

news pretty bunch news news gem news speed racer

news wow tony speed racer what the hell right

in the bottom there oh my god go speed racer

go where's whiplash when you really need him

damn right but yeah so you see tony got jacked

up i mean broken ribs sprained arm a knee that

might never be the same but his hair perfectly

all right. I keep coming back to this because

he's the only superhero that had a permed mullet.

Surely you had more taste in this, Tony. Let's

hope, you know, and then flashback, flashback,

see roadie dumping, just pouring like blood into

the armor. Tony's just sitting there. I'm going

to pass out now. Yeah, and he probably did and

then he drops the bomb on Iron Man that Iron

Man's dead and I'm gonna leave him that way Yep

Yeah, I Don't know man. I just I'm sorry to bring

the show down and just be down on this this book

these stories Well, it's it's a combination of

the art and it's a combination of the fact that

I've already kind of seen it Yeah, I mean coming

coming into it like that I can understand why

but for me this this was the era where this is

like some of my favorite Iron Man stories where

it's Tony trying to No one likes Tony Stark in

the business world like they all think he's a

jackass. Oh, you're just a drunk You lost your

company. Oh, you don't deserve a second chance

So everyone's trying to tear him down Which is

majority of the Iron Man stories was just people

trying to attack Tony Stark. So it's not like

he ever really fought Actual crime or anything,

but yeah, I can see why again comic cartoon Take

your pick, right? Yeah, but or film or film true

So we see, you know firepower doing some tests

and the army is like, well, we're gonna take

it on this flat deck now and cords like No, I

don't think so Unless you want me to call the

news and tell them that this is actually a riot

control armor for ordinary people and not superheroes

And the army's like that nuts to that. We're

gonna take that armor. We're gonna take it now.

Where's that truck and He's just snaps his fingers.

He's like Jack the guy funny. It's like missiles

for days, sir Blows up the truck. I don't see

any truck today guys And then you see Tony's

like we're moving ahead dark days are over and

Marcy showing all the forethought and I have

no idea how she got her job because she wants

Bill Cosby to be the spokesman for Stark Enterprises.

I was like, do you have more money than Coca

-Cola? No, I didn't think so. But it's a put

and pop. In armor. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. And then

we go to like another company that's like going

to merge with Stark and basically all court is

is a bully. that's that's all he's ever been

in the comics he's never been suave he's never

been calculating he basically gets a giant arse

gun points it at somebody says uh -uh you do

what i want so he comes in you know i think it'd

be healthier if he didn't take that job from

stark as he sits there you know burning his fingers

with the match that he lights his cigar with

and then he starts bombing like stark enterprise

businesses and he shows up and he Missiles for

days blows up like train cars and shit injures

people plays a pre -recorded threat You know,

this is edward course like you ruined my life.

Now i'm going to ruin yours You know Like i'm

surprised there wasn't a maniacal laugh in there

yeah and then tony dicks off to his home and

Redesigns and rebuilds the iron man circuit or

armor and I love the most importantly he constructs

a special security chip to that will you know

Destroy shit if somebody tries to copper copy

his technology. Yeah, you know and Tada new Iron

Man armor Yep, I mean I love this armor, but

it's basically you know He's like I built this

armor to take out a firepower and then I'm going

to destroy it Yeah, pretty much Mean all is it's

missing from the rebuild for this new armor is

uh He didn't have do you have Jarvis than this

or no? I didn't know well He doesn't have Jarvis

in the comics like he's had Several different

a eyes the current one and his armor is it I

don't know what the anagram spells out to but

it's called pepper. Oh my god Okay, so yeah all

as I was missing in this scene when he's rebuilding

it And it's the red and gold alls I'm missing

is him saying to Jarvis. Why don't you throw

a little hot rod red in there? Yeah But yeah,

so then you know firepower shows up again missiles

for days You know throwing throwing his weight

around then Iron Man shows up and I love that

full page image of the new armor like that is

Yeah, there's a cool that that is seriously like

you there's been other cool armors beyond that

But I mean as far as like classic you know this

is like you know a 67 or 69 charger kind of classic

feel for armor like it never got better than

this yeah no some have come close but not quite

yeah exactly and I love it's it's it's a pretty

short fight all said and done you see some like

New iron man weapons like you know he's got an

energy shield. He's got his pulse bolts which

the further they travel the harder they hit You

know and I love you see like the Cartwheel that

Fire I want to call them rocket power for some

reason but he's like you see him cartwheeling

and smoke and crafts falling off and He basically

punches him, like, six feet under, literally.

And then Firepower's like, wait, missiles for

days! And he literally fires off everything,

and then he tries firing off the nuke again.

But the whole thing has been damaged by Iron

Man, it's not going to release. He just kind

of stands there and uses an EMP pulse to fry

the armor. You know, then he deactivates the

nuke and it's just kind of It's meant I I don't

think they put as much as Not work but emphasis

into this final confrontation that they could

have But it's more I think ultimately it's more

subtle in how Tony deals with it and everything

You know because they have that whole scene where

firepower is like you think you're so smart I

killed the last Iron Man. I'll kill you too And

then because the whole thing was iron man says

I can't get you out of the armor And he's like

I lied you hear that from firepower there And

then it's like iron man he's packed it in their

suitcase and he's like I was gonna destroy the

armor But I have a responsibility to keep my

inventions from evil hands Blah blah blah, and

then he's like well tonight's the first good

night sleep. I'm gonna have in ages. I was like

Massive lawsuits from the Russian government

the US government you got fired from the Avengers

nobody trusts Stark Enterprises, and oh yeah,

you killed the guy Yeah, Iron Man is not supposed

to kill ladies and gentlemen I may be a drunk,

but he's not supposed to kill it was an accident

you know What is manslaughter one something like

that, but It's just yeah, it's like I wouldn't

be sleeping that soundly like dude. I know you

got money and technology for days, but You've

got at least two the two superpowers in the world.

They're gonna come gunning for you Yeah, and

they never really did Yeah, no, and he see here's

the thing that I have a problem with this whole

thing of oh It's the best sleep. I've gotten

in years or whatever. It's like hello That's

what happened after extremis you dumbass. No,

it's before extremis So I know but the line the

best sleep I've had in years or the best sleep.

I've had in a while Came from at least for me

it came from the end of iron man three so that's

the one that was you know but i like again this

happened well before i know i know just point

of order that's all i'm saying so uh i know we

didn't really go over the covers in too much

detail like there's some good covers don't get

me wrong there are a number of good covers yes

i like um what is it 230 yeah i like 225 with

the you know they stole his technology and now

it's total war Yeah, yeah, I like that one. With

the villains. You know, 226 was cool. 227 was

kind of blah. Same with 228. 229 was cool, but

yeah, 230 is probably the best cover. Yeah. Because,

you know, it's the death of the hero with the

armor, you know, splintering and all that. You

know, 231, it's okay. Yeah, it's all right. I

like 232, though. That was pretty cool. Oh, yeah

with the yeah, cuz 232 is basically like a nightmare

dream sequence. It's just Tony processing everything

after the armor wars done art done by Barry Windsor

Smith who kind of co -wrote with David Michelin

and this issue and for those that don't know

who Barry Windsor Smith is he's a guy who's phenomenally

well known in Conan the barbarian fan circles

because he didn't covers and The long -running

Marvel Conan title for many years, which is where

I really where I first knew Conan from before

the Arnie movie oh Geez so let's see here overall

you want to grade it issue by issue or just the

I'm gonna give it a I'm just gonna grade it overall

you can do issue by issue although I'm doing

as a whole I mean it just I don't want to give

it a I want to give it at least a four more more

a three and a half because I liked it I really

liked it but there was a few things like it's

not that it was really a lackluster finale it

just meh It's okay to put it in a perfect Iron

Man analogy. It's almost an ex -wife. Iron Man

2. You know, that Iron Man just looks like hammer

tech. Yeah. You know, that's what it is. It's

like a three and a half, a four. I liked it.

You know, the failures are not necessarily glaring,

but they're there. And again, There's so many

things. The best thing I could take away from

the last couple of issues is just the missiles

for days. Yeah. When I read this, it took me

a couple of days to get through this book. It

took me a couple of days to get through these

issues because... It took you an hour like this

morning. No, that was... No, no, no. That was

what we'll be getting to next. That's that was

extremis because I started late. But anyway When

I read cuz I read armor wars about two days before

we recorded this episode and it took me those

two days I had to sit down read half of it and

then the next day sit down read the other I just

I Felt as it's pretty dense at some points. It's

dense but it's It's rapid for me. It's repetition

because the armor wars two -parter from the cartoon

series is has always been fresh in my mind and

The voice acting in that series really made that

that two -parter so well done Sure, you don't

have spider -woman here fine. Whatever. You don't

really need her here because there's so many

other characters there are certain moments that

I liked in this but Not a lot of them and I gotta

say this is probably gonna be the first time

ever i've given something lower than a three

because i'm giving this a two that i disliked

it i'd just i felt that if it i've i just kept

feeling that i've i know this before i've seen

this before why i reading this again and this

is the first time i've ever looked at these issues

yeah it gets it's not sure everybody starts for

me so alright we're gonna take a quick break

and then we're gonna Go get heat signatures.

Yay Badge guys. I put a memo in the toilet. Come

on. Tony has got them in his basement They're

wearing party hats. This is an asset that we

can put to use. Uh -huh So you're suggesting

that I replace the entire janitorial staff with

robots What I'm saying is that the human element

of human resources is our biggest point of vulnerability

We should start phasing it out immediately What

excuse me Bambi? Did you just say that security

happy okay? I am thrilled that you are now the

head of security Okay, it's the perfect position

for you. Thank you. However. I do appreciate

it since you've taken the post You don't have

to think we've had a rise in staff complaints

of 300 % Thank you It's not a compliment. It's

not a cop. It is a compliment clearly somebody's

trying to hide something I excuse me. Yes pots

your four o 'clock is here Did you clear this

four o 'clock with me? Happy, we'll talk about

this later, but right now I have to go deal with

this very annoying thing. How so? I used to work

with him and he used to ask me out all the time,

so it's a little awkward. I don't like the sound

of that. Pepper. Caleon? You look great. You

look really great. God, you look great. I can't...

What on earth have you been doing? Nothing fancy.

It's been five years in the hands of physical

therapists. And please, call me Aldrich. Uh,

you were supposed to be issued a security ban.

Happy is okay. Yes. We're good. You sure? Yes.

Stand down. I'm gonna linger. Right here. Okay.

It's very nice to see you, Killian. Hey, guy.

Merry Christmas after years dodging the president's

ban on the moral biotech research my think tank

Now has a little something in the pipeline. It's

an idea We like to call extremis. I'm gonna turn

your lights down Regard the human brain Hold

on, that's the universe, my bad. But if I do

that... That's the brain. Strangely memetic though,

wouldn't you say? Wow, that's amazing. Thanks,

it's mine. What? This, you're inside my head.

It's a live feed. Come on up, I'll prove it to

you. Come on. Pinch my arm. I can take it. Pinch

me. What is that? It's the primary somatosensory

cortex. It's the brain's pain center. But this

is what I wanted to show you. Now, extremis harnesses

our bioelectrical potential. And it goes here.

This is essentially an empty slot. And what this

tells us is that our mind, our entire DNA in

fact, is destined to be upgraded. Hello? Is this

for head of security? What? You know, look, I

got a real job. What do you want? I'm working.

I got something going on here. What, harassing

interns? Let me tell you something. You know

what happened when I told people it was Iron

Man's bodyguard? They would laugh in my face.

I had to leave while I saw that shredded dignity.

Now, I got a real job. I'm watching Pepper. What's

going on? Fill me in. For real? Yeah. All right.

So she's meeting up with this scientist, rich

guy, handsome. Right. I couldn't make his face

at first, right? You know I'm good with faces.

Oh, yeah, you're the best. So I run his credentials.

I make them. Aldrich Killian. We actually met

the guy back in... Where were we in 99, the science

conference? Uh... Switzerland. Right, right,

exactly. Killian? No, I don't remember that guy.

Of course you don't remember. He's not a blonde

with a big rack. At first it was fine. They were

talking business, but now it's like getting weird.

He's showing her... his big brain. There's one?

A big brain, and she likes it. Here, let me show

you. Hold on. See? Look at what? You're watching

them flip the screen, and then we can get started.

I'm not a tech genius like you. Just trust me.

Get down here. Flip the screen. Then I can see

what you're doing. I can't. I don't have to flip

the screen. Look, don't talk to him like that

anymore. You're not my boss. All right? I don't

work for you. Now, I'll trust this guy. He's

got another guy with him. He's shifty. Relax.

Seriously? I'm just asking you to secure the

perimeter. Tell him to go out for a drink or

something. You know what? You should take more

of an interest in what's going on here. This

woman's the best thing that ever happened to

you, and you're just ignoring her. A giant brain?

Yeah, there's a giant brain. It's a shifty character.

I'm gonna follow this guy. I'm gonna run his

plates, and if it gets rough, so be it. I miss

you, Happy. Yeah, I miss you too. But the way

it used to be. Now you're off with the super

friends. I don't know what's going on with you

anymore. The world's getting weird. Hey, I hate

to cut you off. Do you have your taser on you?

What? I think there's a gallon HR is trying to

steal some Turner Inc. You should probably go

over there and zapper. So we're back and this

time we're talking about Iron Man Extremis. Warren

Ellis can do no wrong. Yeah, kind of. I will

say it's really funny that when i got this from

the library it is the cover that i kept wanting

you to find yeah the the 2008 faceplate movie

kind of cover yeah they because they redid that

they read that they put this issue out or they

put this trade out again after a while um and

yeah i mean i really enjoyed this story uh everyone

knows that i Think that Iron Man 3 is a really

damn good movie. I know a lot of people have

issues with it And those people can go suck an

egg I Think Charlie Cosmo said it better I'm

just saying it's just it's not perfect. Don't

get me wrong It's my favorite Iron Man movie

out of the three it goes Iron Man 3 Iron Man

1 Iron Man 2 but Some of the negative comments

I've heard about Iron Man 3 is like, oh, they

couldn't come up with the original script. Oh,

it's Robert Downey Jr. again. When can we get

a new guy? I was like, you know what? Robert

Downey Jr. is to Iron Man live -action film.

As Kevin Conroy is to the goddamn Batman. Suck

it up and move on. Yeah, pretty much. And I don't

want somebody else in the suit. I mean, I get

it. Downey Jr. is his... 50 over 50 something

like that and who knows how long how much longer

he's gonna want to play the role of Tony Stark,

but You know Iron Man 3 is the natural People

that say oh you couldn't get an original script

original script. Are you kidding me? Sure, they're

they're adapting extremists, but you got to look

at what Tony's going through there besides the

fact of putting in the the mind control needles

For the mark for the mark 42 outside of doing

that This takes place right after he got sucked

through a wormhole This movie is ace. It's not

just a superhero movie It's a psychological movie

dealing with the aftermath of getting sucked

through a fucking wormhole I don't even think

it's the aftermath being sucked through the wormhole

though. That is a large part of it It's the fact

that this guy who? you know, had barely learned

to be human again after being, you know, the

drunken, being a walk, a walking bag of drunken

douchebaggery. You know, he learned to be a hero.

He learned to be a man. And he's, I think it's

more so he's dealing with the fact that he almost

sacrificed his life. Like he, he was going to

sacrifice his life to protect all those people.

I mean that You know for some of the weird shit

that he's seen I mean the wormholes a part of

it But it's more so the fact this is like the

biggest thing that he ever did is you know, he

was gonna save the city You know stuff like that.

So but yeah, I mean the story art by Adi Granov

who? Did a hell of a redesign on the armor and

it was one of the primary design influences for

the movie armors you know going forward especially

with like the faceplate and that and Written

by like I said Warren Ellis can do no wrong Warren

Ellis has written such great comics as Transmetropolitan

which is basically what if Hunter S Thompson

lived in the future of Blade Runner and That

doesn't even begin to describe the awesomeness

of that title and he also did that was it GI

Joe resolute the You know one one -shot kind

of animated film Which, why can't there be a

G .I. Joe cartoon based off of that? Yeah, I

don't... Sorry, I gotta mention this. There was

a screening of G .I. Joe Resolute, quick aside.

I forget where, I think it was at the Alamo Drafthouse

in Austin, Texas. Where fans gathered together

to watch this, and there was this woman that

had a custom shirt made that says... Warren Ellis

made sweet, passionate love to my childhood,

and he had an enormous dick. And I was like,

you know what? Not completely comfortable with

that metaphor, but yeah, he did. I'm just saying

it's better, like, hey, I love G .I. Joe Renegades,

but it's not G .I. Joe Resolute. Renegades didn't

really get a fair shake, though. Oh, yeah. I

mean, when you think about it, it's what if G

.I. Joe was the A -Team and Cobra was Walmart?

Okay, so I had the only issue I had with Iron

Man 3 is I Now see what they're doing what they

did with the movie and creating their own version

of the Mandarin but that classic version To find

out that he's just an actor that kind of on both

viewings when I went to the theater I saw it

twice in the theater and that that revelation

I'm like really seriously they went that way

well but I kind of see it now as being somewhat

okay because really Killian is the true Mandarin

etc etc etc you know well the thing is and the

going for like they could leave it like that

and that would be okay but going forward towards

like Iron Man 4 the rumor is that there is an

actual Mandarin behind the ten rings and Killian

just kind of like was drafting off of his coattails

such as it is. Although I thought it was going

to turn out that Trevor, Trevor Slattery was

going to be the real Mandarin and he was just

had some Machiavellian scheme as to You know

why he was doing all this but let's face it like

Ben Kingsley was the goddamn Mandarin Like what

he was until the reveal. Yeah, he was like he

you know if they wanted to bring it back and

Just a huge coinkied ink the man that you know

the Mandarin and Trevor just happened to look

alike on some level, you know that that I would

accept that explanation because I made that movie

poster of him sitting back wearing the sunglasses

and just looking like a pimp. That's the Mandarin,

you know, doesn't have to be the cackling madman

with Freddy Krueger nails and all the rings on.

But, you know, I digress. Well, he he was wearing

the rings though, wasn't he? Have to go back

and look at the poster, but I think you might

know not not in the poster in the movie at one

point He was wearing the ring. Yeah, but they

weren't they didn't have any jewels in them It

was just well they were you couldn't really tell

because I think it's like a blink and you miss

it kind of shot Yeah, but yeah, but Extremis

is That this is a large part of the Marvel storytelling

universe going forward. This is sometime after

the refounding of the Avengers after the Scarlet

Witch went nuts and nuked Avengers Mansion, more

or less, and the Avengers dissolved. And then

they came back together with, you know, Spider

-Man and Luke Cage and Ronan and all that. And

then this takes place between that and the Stamford

catastrophe, which is the... where, what's, uh,

Nitro, one of the Marvel super -villains. He

explodes and he gets better. He blew up and killed

like 600 people, which led to the Civil War,

which led to Tony Stark becoming Nick Fury and

then Norman Osborn. And this was a huge step

in that direction. Yeah. And once again, after

the end of the final Iron Man series where for

a while, everyone where Tony Stark became the

Secretary of Defense. Mm -hmm and everyone knew

he was Iron Man and then he got fired from that.

He's like, no, I'm not Iron Man anymore There's

this new guy and everyone bought that bullshit

so at this point in the in the story, he does

it no one knows that Iron Man is really Tony

Stark again and This is also one of those things.

This is the cool thing about Marvel with their

origin of their characters like back in the 60s.

It was set this is where this happened, like

Tony Stark went to Vietnam and he stepped on

a landmine and Wong Chu captured him, you know,

stuff like that. In this story they update it

again, so now it's like, you know, the second

Gulf War, it's in the middle of the Afghanistan

war, you know, one of his seed pod bombs go off

and he gets the shrapnel in his chest and he's

captured by the Afghan terrorist Wong Fu again,

or Wong Chu. You know it they updated and that's

the great thing about Marvel is that they're

careful to update it to be in step with the times

but They don't reboot their entire goddamn universe

I'm looking at you DC Now come on. We've we've

gone down this road before there are a couple

of good things done with the new 52, but Let's

stick to Iron Man. Yeah. So yeah, so Tony starts

being interviewed by this guy who's Oh, first

of all, before you get into that, I have to ask,

who is the guy that they inject? Is that Killian?

That's not Killian. That's Malon, who used the

same name for the character in the Extremis episode

of Iron Man Armored Adventures. Although there

is a Dr. Aldrich Killian who is responsible for

creating the Extremis, and he takes his own life

in the first few pages of the story. See, that's

the thing that confused me about this story again.

No offense to Mr. Ellis, he does write extremely

well work, and that's kind of - Realizes the

place before they wrote the first movie, right?

No, I understand that. I'm just saying that I

got confused with who they injected. Killian

killing himself and then this guy because I the

way I thought it played out as I read it I thought

this guy was Killian He shot himself To prove

that the extremists would work and then he comes

back and goes on the rampage now that you're

telling me that this guy is someone totally separate

and Killian just dies I'm like, oh, okay. Well

Iron Man 3 kind of did it better, but whatever

And Silence like once again this episode I've

broken JT's brain Yeah, we broke your brain,

but you keep putting the court though the apple

cart before the horse Mike Like I understand

you like the cartoon better. You're not you haven't

read the comic books for as long as I have but

you keep this just I Know where you're coming

from but yeah, so Malin takes the dose and he's

eyes go all demon red and he pukes blood and

his body turns into a giant scab and Well, that's

the last time we see him for most of this issue

and the first one where you know Tony's we go

back to Coney Island and Tony is woken up by

his secretary. He's been living in his lab again

You know, he showers up and he goes and is interviewed

by this guy who does like documentary films,

which is where we get the updated origin of Tony

Stark as Iron Man. He's basically the guy's like

trying to, you know, run him rush shot over him

with his, you know, he asked him a question,

Tony starts to answer. He asked him another question

and there's this great scene in the first issue

where Tony like lays it down on him. He's like,

look, you keep running me over every time. I

try to answer a question and this is how it works.

And he explains to him, you know, the development

of weapons technology leads to all this other

like stuff that useful actual social technologies

that help people. You know, did I first think

of myself to taking microchips down to the nanometer

would be good for bombs? No, but you know, the

money from that went into like, you know, medical

implants and Technologies and such like that

and that's the thing he says that you just kind

of vindicate himself and then The guy asked do

you think afghan kid with his arms blown off

by a landmine is even remotely impressed by the

Iron Man suit? Because he this all leads off

of how he tries to make the Iron Man suit to

be like a Weapon of war and all that Yeah, yeah,

and then Tony asked, you know kind of turns it

back on him like have you changed anything with

all your work and I don't know, and Tony's like,

same answer, nice to meet you. Yeah, no, let

me make myself perfectly clear. I enjoyed this

more than I did Armor Wars, but all I was saying

about the whole confusion thing a second ago

was I wasn't sure. And the fact that it isn't

Killian, it's kind of weird that it's not Killian

doing the destruction later. but you know other

than that i really enjoyed the story i love the

art the art's amazing that's yeah it's kind of

got that computer it's almost looks like it's

computer generated but but it's got that painted

quality to it too yeah i mean especially when

you get towards uh that that one page uh shot

of mallet in the scab bodysuit and i was like

it's kind of pretty if it wasn't so icky yeah

And we shouldn't gloss over the chapter we see

Dr. Killian writing his suicide note and Mike

going, this is all wrong. And then Maya Hansen

comes in and she's like, he shot himself in the

head. He stole the Extremis though. So it's like,

if you hadn't seen the movie and you read this

comic, You would I would hope you would think

being an intelligent human being reading that

he stole the extremist dose He stole it and this

is his confession. It's somebody be like I'm

calling shenanigans Yeah, like you found all

this thing But yeah, and one thing I should mention

just very briefly. They turned this the extremist

arc into a motion comic DVD that you can get

there's actually a four pack of this and some

other Marvel like Marvel comic miniseries that

they turned into like motion comics It's like

the old -school like Marvel superheroes cartoon

from the 60s, which is actually really good I

would highly recommend somebody if you can find

this at your local library to watch I'd recommend

it But yeah, we get back to Tony and he's you

know Captain's log start eight, you know recording

a journal you see him going into like this like

basically a Missile silo to get into the Iron

Man armor and I love the line hard to believe

I used to be able to fit this inside a briefcase

I Love the I love the exchange with his secretary.

Um, yeah, so I'm gonna need my car in the crate

no one look I Call shenanigans on that that no

one would look inside that crate even if they

were facing Tony Stark's wrath I suppose, but

I'd still love his comeback. I'm very protective

about my car. My car, yeah. I mean, at this point,

I'm pretty sure his secretary, I suppose in that

ridiculous crate, she's talking about the armor.

His secretary knows. This isn't Miss Arvagast

at this point. It's a different lady, but she

probably knows. It's not Pepper. Pepper's doing

something else right now. Married to happy Hogan

But yeah, what wait wait wait wait wait in the

comics long before Tony and pepper ever started

making like they always made goo -goo eyes at

each other, but eventually Tony's bodyguard slash

show for happy Hogan. Eventually he wore pepper

down and they got married and They were written

out of the comics for like decades before they

came back So at this point the comic they're

still you know, they're still out there i think

they just got a divorce prior to this something

like that so comics everybody i know i just can't

there's certain marriages that i just cannot

understand in comics like Look at Superman consider

Superman and Wonder Woman This that and the other

thing now happy and pepper. I just well they

built that up for years in the car Years, so

let's face it today that we're recording this

on singles Awareness Day folks, so I Won't call

it by the other name because it's just You know

was just contrived and created his say, you know

any other holiday really we're recording this

on singles awareness day, but it won't come out

until You know sometime in March, but yeah shattered

the illusion, I'm sorry Yes, but yeah, we get

back to Texas and Malins You know crawled out

of his cocoon and now he's all bloody teeth and

red eyes and I'm alive You know you know going

into the next issue an extremist part two and

basically tony's having a virtual conference

with his like board of directors and i i imagine

that you know bill gates might have read this

issue and thought hey this is kind of what happened

to me you know they basically the board of directors

is like they want tony to step down as ceo because

he's always out of the office yeah You can take

a chief technologist role. It doesn't take away

your control. Actually, I'm pretty sure that

it would Yeah, you just don't want Tony there

to screw up Oh wait, we could sell this shit

to the military and make billions Or we can sell

it to private enterprise in another country and

make trillions and Tony's like guys still in

charge here Damn it See, yeah, they're basically

talking about Tony Stark created an iPhone iPhone

killer phone and Yeah, you know, it's just the

look on the dude's face that says, you know when

you spend six weeks in the garage And I imagine

Tony was just I want to kill I'm gonna kill him.

How can I kill him? Yeah, you know that sort

of thing But you know at this point Maya who

is an old friend of Tony's has called him in

for help. He's flown out to Texas to the future

farm industries to You know talk, you know figure

out what's going on they start reminiscing about

old times and You know, Tony has sent the data

back to New York to like be analyzed and figure

out what the hell's going on here. Yeah. The

panel, the page after that, where it's the FBI

van or supposedly a van in front of the FBI building.

I'm looking at this and I'm thinking, wow, that's

really realistic compared to Tony and Maya's

interaction on the page next to it. Yeah, like

it looks like this is a real street a real bridge

a real set of cars because it does pull up next

to a taxi And I'm like it's a change in style

for me compared to the two of them Interacting

on the on the page previous. Oh, yeah And that's

the that that goes to Addy Grano's art like this

guy is just it's absolutely beautiful Yeah, like

every panel like it, you know, it's comic art,

but it's still Not photorealistic, but you know,

oh I would say it's very photorealistic Well,

there's this and then there's Alex Ross. So Okay.

Yeah, but I'm saying that it's really really

good is what we're saying. Yeah, but no, no I

am complaining about it because if you look at

the page previous where you see future farm and

you see Tony's car come up sure Tony's car looks

real but if you see all these exchanges between

the two of them between Tony and Maya on the

on that and the page after it and then you see

this page this page to me almost this the cars

in the van and the taxi and the bridge in the

road it almost jumped out of the book at me because

it's it's such a different it's like grand off

Decided oh hey for this page. I'm gonna go completely

photorealistic and shatter everybody's Delusion

of having consistent art in a book So yeah It's

just a van in a taxi, but still it it was something

that jarred me because I was like What's going

on with the art here? What the what? Yeah, so

yeah, Tony and Maya go to visit Sam Sam Who's

like the this old like mentor professor that

they knew from back in the day? he's firmly in

the camp of You're both working for the corporations

for the military for the government like he's

dudes a full -on hippie Yeah, you know no phone.

No internet. No nothing, you know Fresh -pressed

apple juice, you know likes the mushrooms such

like that Yeah, you know, it's Just that sort

of thing, but they're basically trying to because

of everything that's going on They're just trying

to figure out you know what to do and what the

next step would be and why would someone steal

the Extremis, you know, it's meant to be You

know like next -gen medical biotechnology You

know, what are you gonna do? But it goes into

that and there's all this like I love Warren

Ellis because this guy does insane amounts of

research research and he puts just enough of

the Actual science into stories that you would

make stuff like this feel possible. Oh, yeah,

and it's there's this whole diatribe about Talking

about DMT, which is like they think that's the

chemical in like mushrooms that you know causes

you to trip out and access different portions

of your mind and all that and this is all told

over top Malin walking into FBI headquarters

and Ruining some people shit. I mean, yeah, you

see he punches This dude's jaw off and then he

punches his face off and then he throws a gun

Not fires again. He throws a gun in buries it

in some other dude's chest and just like dude

comes on like the wrath of God because you find

you find out later on in the story that Malon's

like this anti -government you know militia type

which oh good that guy has superpowers this is

gonna end well yeah you know so but you see Malon

just jack all these dudes up and then he breathes

fire And and nukes like not just the FBI agents

firing out. He nukes like the couple of dozen

or so Ordinary agents and civilians that are

in this lobby and he just hosts everybody Like

this dude is committed an act of terrorism just

Yeah, like you see that one shot where Tony and

Meyer watching the news At on Tony's phone because

you know, Sid doesn't have a TV Yeah, you see

that one shot of this guy who's like halfway

to being Frankie Krueger getting a bandage put

on his face and Just from looking at the damage

and the descriptions of what happened Maya's

like Extremists did this Yeah, you know, it's

uh Yeah, it's crazy and it was one of those things

where Was wondering how they were going to and

yes, I know this came before Iron Man 3 But I

was even shocked watching Iron Man 3 that Killian

breathed fire So I was kind of wondering as I

was reading through this how that was going to

be conveyed if it was even going to be and They

grant off really does pull it off. It's a it's

a cool Artifact and I had really enjoyed it.

But yeah, my is like, oh no, we're in trouble.

It's just like oh damn But yeah, so we go to

the next issue three of extremis and Tony is

like lay it down for me, you know, what is extremis

and Maya finally cops to it. It's not this medical

biotechnology. It's super soldier solution version

two You know, and she again like Ellis is extremely

well read on emerging technologies and such like

that that, you know, what he comes up with this

explanation for extremist works. It almost sounds

like this could actually happen someday. You

know, because it's this it's basically now technology.

It's a magic bullet like the original super soldier

soon is the exact line. It's a one shot dose

that hacks the body. and basically reboots the

system, which is why Malon puked blood and turned

into a giant scab. It's all part of the process

of upgrading his body. And then you get superpowers.

Really horrible way to get superpowers, but yeah.

One of my favorite scenes in this issue is where

Tony after getting this He calls into the government

as part of like the Avengers set up. So he calls

in, you know information calls in the information

You know description of the pair of the perpetrator

what he could do You know Iron Man is available

for intercept and engagement You know, and there's

this recurring theme or occurring mentions of

stuff in this story where Tony Stark can't look

at himself in the mirror and you know and then

the scene after he's gonna he's gonna get suited

up suited up and all that he's like oh now you

can look at me you know because when he's Tony

Stark and he's just doing stuff he can't really

look at himself but when he's Iron Man all of

a sudden he's like you know look at me look at

me yeah I'm a superhero yeah and then he like

lies to Maya's like it's Iron Man in there isn't

it and or not Maya to the the pilot and he's

like tell you a secret command and control for

Iron Man and putting them in the field yep and

then you know he goes Captain Long again and

they had this in the first issue in this issue

you see this wherever Tony Stark like thumbs

a control port to activate something it has a

little x -ray diagram of like the you know he's

got like a like a microchip you know buried in

his arm that like you know activates everything

yeah and then you know so you see him starting

the suit up and we get a flashback of malon growing

up in this militia like household and his parents

being killed by the government and you know that

this is basically where you he's just an angry

angry person yep and then we see you know iron

man falling flying it falling in flying in he's

going to engage the vehicle he bisects the van

so the two normal dudes up front are taken out

but unharmed and malon comes out and how would

you describe what happens to iron man here mike

um he basically gets breathed fire on Yeah, he

gets jacked up. Pretty much, yeah. I love Mal,

and Iron Man has him by the throat while he's

breathing fire, and it cuts that off. And all

of a sudden, he sprouts taser spikes from his

fingers. And not only is he super strong, he's

strong enough to lift up Iron Man, which probably

weighs 200 or 300 pounds, like the armor alone,

and throws him for a field goal. Yeah, pretty

much. But I gotta I gotta say and I really gotta

think sure Malin did You know basically scratch

Tony and Electrify him, but I gotta think Tony

would try to find a way to get his boosters working

again So he wouldn't crash the way he crashes.

Yeah but then again, I mean he's Sure, the guy's

got some powers, but he probably went in not

Knowing or not thinking that now there's no possible

way this guy could throw me for a feel -good.

Oops. I guess I was wrong you know, but yeah,

like Malin jacks him up and You know he Unabeams

him away and catches this minivan that Malin

was gonna drop on him And then you know Malin

runs away Well, Iron Man is trapped under like

literally he's pinned underneath this minivan

and the family's freaking out and this fire is

coming and he basically uses what little power

he has left to I guess uses repulsors to extinguish

the blaze and then, you know, he's getting out

and then his armor basically seizes on him. Yeah.

And then he gets airlifted to future farm. Yep.

The funny thing about the minivan is that's where

they got the scene from. They got it from this

in the first Iron Man movie. Oh, yeah. But they

didn't have the... the comic didn't have the

mother flooring it and laying some rubber on

Iron Man's face. Yeah, no, that was... yeah.

That was pretty awesome, though. Yeah, so Maya's

gonna fix up Iron Man and... Tony sent you, right?

And, uh, right here. And she's like, Oh shit.

Yes. Yeah. She finds out that he's iron man.

And the whole idea that she's like, why didn't

you go to a hospital? Uh, I need extremists or

extremists. Sorry. Yeah. And it's like, he's

going to hack extremists and reconfigure his

body. You know, cause this goes towards like

making him more super. Yes, like you see is I'm

like when she peels the right arm gauntlet off

And you just see like how mangled he's gotten

in this one fight You know, it's this whole thing

like he can barely walk and he walks into a lab

and You know has her bring in Like another some

another package he's got from his Coney Island

headquarters He's sitting there and he's in the

time that she was gone, which is maybe five ten

minutes He's hacked and reconfigured the extremist

dose and then we get Malin talking some angry

chick You know out in the middle of nowhere in

Texas and she's wearing like this American flag

with a swastika on her shirt and You know, she

got kicked out of school for writing a story

about zombies attacking the town and they called

it terroristic writing and malon kind of it's

kind of a cool scene like you see i'm not saying

like trying to humanize the guy because the guy

is scum because he's killing people just because

my family got killed by the government i'm gonna

make them pay but it's he's talking to her like

she's like a kindred spirit and She's just angry

at the world, but not so angry Yeah, and she

basically tells him to go F off and well he decides

to separate her head from the rest of her body

Yeah, pretty much that's You don't see him rip

it off, but you see the aftermath and it's a

fairly gruesome image Yes, yes, and then you

know Maya so Maya's come back with this oversized

suitcase And it's the new Iron Man armor. It's

made out of memory metals. And it kind of goes

back to how he used to fold the suit up like

cloth in his briefcase. And then an electric

charge would snap it into shape. And that's what

he's come back to here. He's shrunk it down.

It's lighter, faster, tougher. But with Extremis,

he's basically going to use that to take most

of the stuff that they've taken out that he kind

of needs, Extremis is going to replace that level

of technology, his control and all that, basically.

And Maya's basically, okay, we're going to recompile

the Extremis. And it's like, good, because my

internal injuries are going to kill me if this

doesn't work. Yeah. I do like the line, it's

a little bit telling about Why Tony feels responsible

for taking care of Malin and all that is where

he says is all I have is making the future and

stopping the animals who want to take the future

away from people which You know, that's pretty

cool. I think that you know, he could just sit

back and use his technology in other ways, but

For the guilt of his origins like, you know,

professor Jensen dying and all that like he feels

that responsibility to Use it in the best way

possible So, you know, he takes the dose and

well turns into a giant scab again like melon

did Yep, it's scabby all around although we do

get back to the like a flashback to the what's

like flat half a flashback half a man like a

fever dream where he meets professor Yinson in

the terrorist camp and They start to work on

the original Iron Man armor and it goes back

and you see images of the extremist working and

fixing his bones and Just I do love the there's

the full -on image of the classic great Iron

Man suit where he busts out of the shack and

Say hello to Iron Man you scum. I was like that

is a classic image of Iron Man right there Yeah,

see I thought this whole thing was a flashback

Well, it's like a flashback, you know fever dream

because you know, what's his mind gonna We you

can't say for sure what his mind is gonna work

on while he's out of it like this But you see

him like, you know, he wears the armor and he

lay lays waste to the terrorist camp again Very

much something that probably inspired what happened

in the first movie But yeah, I mean Like how

he wakes up and it almost looks like he's as

the scab like dissolves or is Reabsorbed into

his body by the extremis almost looks like he's

covered in lava Which I thought was a really

cool visual effect So Yeah, the fire stuff is

really really awesome in this it really is like

digital leg there are digital artifacts in here

sure, but it's I mean, this is probably all done

on like a Wacom tablet or something like that,

so. Yeah. But we find out that Tony's been out

for the better part of the day and now he has

ports that open his arm and the gold undersheath

of his armor pours out from inside his bones

and uses his new mental technopath powers to

apply his armor. Yeah, I like it. I think it's

cool. They kind of flipped the script on us with

Iron Man 3 because Tony never really had Extremis,

did he, in the movie? No. He created the mind

part of the technology to control the armor.

It wasn't as refined as Extremis would be. Yes.

Although no extremists in the movie is more of

a it's more of a straight in the movie It's more

of a straight -up super soldier serum. Yeah than

anything because there's no real technological

elements Involved well, it is a super soldier

serum, but it's also supposed to be a healer

because the whole part of it is, oh, the vice

president's daughter or granddaughter, she lost

a limb. So the vice president is going to team

up with Killian to make sure that Extremis goes

through so his daughter's leg can be saved. Yeah.

But like we saw in the movie, it's more unstable

than Killian ever. And he's basically playing

the VP for a fool. Yeah, pretty much. But yeah,

Tony's in the new armor and I do my favorite

line, in this issue and almost in the whole story

it's like we don't know where he is talking about

malam and malan and tony's like i do i could

see through satellites you know and and that

moment you hear in my mind i hear black Sabbath

queue up because oh yeah most definitely Well,

although I do like that, you know Malon's headed

to Washington DC in the final chapter of the

story And they have that line from the government

or from the cops or whatever evacuation is complete

iron man. He's all yours And he's like repulsor

to the face Yeah And Malo just turns around he's

like what the what he's like dude I am so gonna

jack you up again And then Malon just basically

Tony Stark goes hard and takes Malon out I mean

and he lays a righteous beating down on him He

does that's a pretty severe beating I mean apparently

one part we haven't seen before in the issue

Malon has like electro powers where he can like

cast lightning and He's like shut up die die

die and when I read that The first time I read

extremis when this first came out and having

read it again now I couldn't help but think of

some snotty 12 year old on Xbox live You know

playing playing cod and we all know a kid like

that Yes And it's just you know, you lost the

arms race now and blah blah blah, you know It's

Tony basically talking down to him while also

working him at the same time. I mean and Alan,

you know, Malin's charging towards him with the

taser claws and Tony scans the municipal power

line. He pulls like a main power line out of

the road and tags Malin. It sends him flying.

Yeah. And then he proceeds to punch him in the

face. Yep. I don't love where - Fists and faces.

Yeah. I still love where Malin, he grabs like,

uh, like wrecking ball. load hook some in a construction

yard and Tony's like picks up the shovel off

the front of a bulldozer. He's like, you really

want to do this? I'm trying not to kill you.

And he, you know, he beats Malon and Malon keeps

going and gets to the point where, you know,

Malon, you know, Malon's about to kill him and

Malon, he's just full on gone crazy. You know,

he's like there isn't any future. I'm gonna kill

it and then well, you know to Tony's Iron Man

kills a guy again Yeah, well this time it's justified.

I would say yeah, no like he does make his head

a man's homicide and all that Yeah, but I mean

this one. He's like I Don't want to do this.

I don't know. Screw you. You're making me do

this And you know when he Unabeam's Malon through

the chest, but the extremists are kind of I think

is kind of healing him and then like repulsors

to the head times to it he Well pops Malon's

cork Yep It'd go boom like a really fiery jack

-o -lantern Yeah, and then he I loved when he's

like he kicks a corpse Like you stupid son of

a bitch food. Oh my god. Yeah, he does. He does

kick And when he kicks the corpse, there's a

little you know out the neck cuz well, there's

nothing they're holding it in anymore And then

it's kind of a somber again It's it's kind of

like how armored wars ended in that it's this

not huge. It's not a big bang finale Mm -hmm,

but it's a very it's it's it's better in a way

this is more somber because Tony's like one thing

left to do the worst thing and he goes back with

the military and Basically, he's like it takes

two keys to open the vault Maya You had one your

boss had one and that's where you know He drops

it that you know Maya was part of the you know

She had to get it out there and see if it worked

You know all that and she turns into like that

self -righteous, you know Scientist is like What

I did was right. There's no difference between

us Tony. There's no difference at all And then

Tony's there. Yeah, but it's like I Do like where

she says you're no better than me and Tony ends

with but I'm trying to be Yeah, I will say now

that you mentioned about Tony kicking the corpse

all I can think of is How do you feel, mighty

Megatron? Tony was Starscream for half a second.

Just half a second. Yeah. No, Extremis, even

though I do prefer Iron Man 3, as far as how

the story was presented about Extremis, this

was really, really a fun read. It was very well

done. Absolutely love it. I do have that little

nitpick about... the art change from one page

to the next between the conversations between

Maya and Tony and then the vehicles traveling,

but that's just a little nitpick. Other than

that, I absolutely love this one. Yeah. It's

so great. So overall, what are you going to give

this? I'm gonna give it a four star. I really

liked it. I have to take one star off because

of that. It was really jarring to me seeing...

I could see if this book was like if these issues,

these six issues, if Granoff had... His name

is Granoff, right? 80 Granoff. Yeah, I could

see if he did three issues and then someone else

did the other three issues It would be different

but to have one artist do two very starting one

style and then completely go a different style

So yeah, I gotta take one star for that. But

yeah, I Really did like it. I thought I thought

it was great. What about you? I'm giving it like

I want to give it a four and a half. It's somewhere,

you know four point two five stars You know,

I really liked it. It's almost perfect. I love

80 Grannums. Addy Grannums art, I think is proper

pronunciation. I love this art, don't get me

wrong, but it's almost too soft in a way. It's

just the look of it, that kind of texture it

has. It's great art, don't get me wrong, but

you know, I'm kind of an OG comics fan. If it

had been somebody like Mark Bagley or even like

Adam or Andy Kubert something like that like

I probably would have liked this story a lot

more although it probably The part of the art

which is so good is it's the art that really

sells a lot of the story Yeah, you know you're

looking at the face like that girl that Mallon

talks to for like five seconds before she pisses

him off and he takes her out or you know the

Conversation with its Sal Kennedy not sit as

I call them The conversation that Maya and Tony

have with Sal and it's just the looks on their

faces and it's the it's Granov style that really

sells the emotion of that story So I'm giving

it, you know final analysis. I'm gonna give it

a straight -up four Yeah, I'm right there with

you I just can't give it a perfect and it's not

because of the story and Warren Ellis did an

amazing job with the story It's because of the

art. Yeah, and the other thing about the art

is it took me a while The very first issue, I

had to look at the panel twice, but right before

Tony gets in the shower when his phone's ringing,

I went from Malin spewing out blood to this workshop

page, and I'm looking at the bottom left of the

workshop, top half of the panel. And then I see

the phone ringing and I'm like, where did Tony

come? Oh, and I looked up at the top right and

I'm like, oh, that's where he came from. He was

on the cot. I completely missed it at first.

But yeah, no, just the art style changes for

me. It was a little rough. But other than that,

absolutely loved Extremis. Where can the people
