Hulk, Spider -Man, Iron Man, and Wolverine, bub.
So get these web shooters ready to armor up and
pop the claws, bub. Cuz inside the pull bag,
we're hulking out for America. Fuck yeah! It's
all inside the pull bag here on the Geekcast
Radio Network. And now, on with the show. Hello
and welcome to The Pole Bag. This is episode
62, part of Marvelous March, our 2014 spotlight,
covering five different Marvel heroes. Last time
you heard movie rule, Dan and I talk about...
Captain America Man Outta Time and Hulk Planet
Hulk. This time around JT and I have a couple
of Spidey trades to talk about. First we're going
to talk about Spider -Man Blue. And then it was
suggested to me to get Spider -Man Kraven's Last
Hunt. Could not find it anywhere at all. Couldn't
really find it and I could not... Find it when
I did find that it wasn't at a decent price Honestly,
I'd say it's worth it at any price cuz it's like
one of the spider -man stories I mean, I'm not
saying that That it's not worth the price if
you have the money to spend the price on it So
what you're saying is the wallet isn't that deep
this month? Okay, okay But I'm of course TF2
and Mike and he is JT from Saskatoon and we are
here today as I said to talk about two Spider
-Man trades and funny how that happens Yeah,
really at least on this show time ladies and
gentlemen, we're going way back in time, you
know It's one of those things though where I
was like, okay, cuz The way I wanted to do Marvelous
March was I wanted to cover at least two stories.
My goal for Marvelous March was, as I said in
episode 61, is that I wanted to get Spider -Man
or I wanted to get stories from these five characters
that were basically just one shots that I didn't
need to read X number of extra other crossover
bullsnot stuff to understand it. So after I couldn't
find Craven's last hunt, I was like, okay, well,
I'll look on instocktrades .com and I'll see
what we can find. And I came upon Return of the
Black Cat. And I'm like, ooh, I like the black
cat. This'll work out well. Any initial thoughts
about the books we're gonna cover today? Well,
the... like you said, we're going to look at
Spider -Man Blue and the story, like you mentioned
off -air, they thought maybe it was an alternate
reality. This actually takes place in like the
golden era of Spider -Man in the late 60s where
the great Steve Ditko was moving on from the
title to do other things, most notably with DC
at the time where he had a hand in creating the
Jack Rider and the Creeper, and John Romita Sr.
came on and he went on to become like one of
my favorite Spider -Man artists he became one
of the definitive Spider -Man artists and this
is still like I said Golden Age of Spider -Man
where you weren't getting crab villains like
the willow of the wisp or anything and that's
an actual villain is like oh look at me I have
long blonde hair and I can turn into mist yes
ooh so threatening you know But it involves a
lot of Spidey's classic rogues gallery like Blizzard,
OG Goblin, Norman Osborn, Kraven, The Rhino.
And it's just like, oh, why couldn't you just
stay here, Spider -Man? Clone Saga, what's that?
Yeah. So this is like I said, this is like classic
era Spidey. And then we'll look at the... the
mod some of the more better modern era spider
-man with the return of the black cat comics
which actually in terms of tone and if Not necessarily
stories really harken back to this classic era
spidey, but we'll get into that later on. Oh,
yeah Oh, yeah, so First up is spider -man blue
after this. I'm Gwen Stacy This is Mary Jane
Watson. Oh Oh, it's so nice to finally meet you.
Pete talks about you all the time. Oh? Gwen is
my lab partner in Dr. Connor's class. Pete's
something of a genius. I'd be completely lost
without him. Which actually reminds me, Pete,
if you've got a picture of my kiss with Spider
-Man, could you bring it to class? I'd really
love it. For my portfolio. Alright, Spider -Man
Blue, written by Jeff Loeb, art by Tim Sale.
Now I know a lot of people see this is the thing
this is why I love this podcast is because All
you old fogies who have been around comics longer
than I have as far as knowing everything about
them Can make your opinions known about certain
writers and artists and etc etc etc But for me
a lot of this stuff is first time reading and
I know a lot of people hate Jeff Loeb Hates a
strong word Jeff Loeb is always in good graces
with me because he wrote the script for the Schwarzenegger
film Commando. Oh, my God. Which, you know, has
one of my all -time favorite Arnold Lyons. And
don't disturb my friend here. He's dead tired
after he breaks a guy's neck. But and, you know,
he went on to write some good, not so good comics.
I mean, he wrote the initial. Was it six issue
storyline of Superman Batman in the mid aughts
that you know became Superman public enemies
or Superman Batman public enemies with the Ed
McGinnis art and all that Jeff loaves got this
It's a hit and miss with on the quality of the
story, but he's got this inherent Silver ageness
in his stories that he writes like certainly
inherent here because you know, it's the silver
age of Marvel with the era that Spider -Man's
in and everything else he writes. I really, I'm
a huge fan of some of his work and other stuff.
I'm like, Oh God, lay off the cough medicine.
But no, I like it. Like here specifically, this
is like some of his best work. And I know there
are certain people out there like, you want to
cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war for whatever
reason, cause they just can't let it go. Yeah,
like no he wrote one bad thing so therefore everything
sucks, but no this is definitely some of his
best work Yeah, and I was I remember the other
day when I sat down to read this I was like okay.
It's titled spider -man blue, but is the entire
book gonna be in blue really come on now well
yeah, that was the best thing because well for
the first few pages of You know the first issue
and then the last few pages of the final issue
issue 6 it's done in this stark, you know kind
of blue black and some white just to Delineate,
you know the mood that it's on because it's we'll
get into in the story but I mean it's basically
over the course of the six issues of this series
spider -man is Kind of recording his thoughts
post the death of Gwen Stacy. You know, just
processing, you know, how he feels because over
the course of the story, you know, it's like
the that that initial attraction. And then, of
course, the. You know, Mary Jane Watson comes
on the scene with all the force of a semi truck.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, but.
You know, it just kind of throws the old Parker
Luck running true to charm. Oh, we'll get to
the Parker luck a lot later in this episode of
the podcast. But yeah, it's basically, the overarching
theme is just Peter processing how they met and
how they kind of fell in love and there's this
constant distraction with this ginger known as
Mary Jane. But yeah, it goes on from there and
it's just this classic era Spidey tale, really.
and it gets into stuff of like how Peter and
Harry Osborn became roommates for the longest
time through college and you know what basically
generated Flash Thompson's decision to join the
army and you know it just goes on from there
and it's there's so many good moments in this
series yeah I this reminds me of Christopher
Daniel Barnes and all that voice cast in the
94 series as far as all the quips and everything
else that are in here Yeah I mean as far as faces
go green and lumpy wouldn't be my first choice.
Oh, yeah, just because I mean it's basically
the first issue opens like after you see Spider
-man swinging through the night and pulling basically
a Bruce Wayne on top of the Brooklyn Bridge like
you know cuz this is like year or so after Gwen
has died and it's like, you know, Bruce Wayne
leaving the roses in Crime Alley for his parents
and Spidey does the same and just that shot of
the rose getting blown off the top of the Brooklyn
Bridge by the wind, it kind of illustrates, like,
the shot is, you know, kind of the same shot
as Gwen falling and, you know, Spider -Man failing
to save the love of his life, but I absolutely
love Tim Sale's design work on the goblin with
the Spock ears on crack and eyes the size of
tear plates and Yeah, they're actually eyes his
face is actually painted green. There's no giant
friggin mask. Thank God. Yeah Over a human head
Yeah, and I mean this is a storyline like for
years like until like the early 70s, you know
with the duet The death of Gwen Stacy This was
the last time we saw the green goblin for years
in the comics Yeah for at least two or three
years where you know spider -man I'm gonna whoop
the goblin out of you and he pretty much does
because Place goes boom Norman can't remember
a thing Spidey tosses a man what I don't get
is like he tosses the masks sure And then he
basically strips Osborne, you know, down to his
civvies. And he just dumps him in the cop's arms
and swings off into the night and into the arms,
more or less, of Jolly Jonah. You know, back
in the day where this guy stretched a penny for
three miles. You know, and of course he goes
and he's... Peter barely gets a word in Edgewise
and he's going off and around, you kids today
in that rock and roll music, you got no sense
of, you know... Propriety and Peter's like yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Can I get paid? Yeah, and it's just
that time where again, this is classic Joe This
is my favorite version of Jonah where he's just
you know the blowhard He's much I liked him as
the mayor in superior, you know going at the
end of at the end of amazing and going into superior
I enjoy a much better at the bugle. Yeah, it's
I like yeah, I like it was a mirror. But yeah,
it's Jonah needs to be behind the desk Screaming
from across the office for Robbie or Parker.
Yeah, you know whether or not I mean I I love
for all four and when you say J Jonah Jameson
the first idea that or the first picture that
pops in mind is Jonah screaming at somebody with
a stogie firmly clenched in his teeth Old JK
Simmons. He really made that role. Oh come to
life That he is to Jonah what you know Conroy
is to Batman kind of yeah pretty much and it's
it's very rare like an animation or just anything
where you get an actor who's crosses you know
series or I guess you could say genres or modes
of film because I mean he went from the live
action he was doing the voice in all three of
the current Marvel cartoons through Agents of
Smash Avengers assemble an ultimate Spidey Yeah,
and it's just like you can't can see you can't
conceive of somebody else Doing Batman, you know,
it's always gonna be Kevin Conroy, although Bruce
Greenwood Very very close. I just can't think
of anybody else outside of JK who could do Spidey
I mean, we all love Ed Asner in the 90s series,
but yeah he was a little too even you know you
need somebody that can like sound like they're
about to lose their proverbial shite the way
jk has in her voice but yeah you know back to
the comics of this classic jona you know peter
goes to see norman in the hospital talk to harry
you know and this is only like two or three at
this point in the comics this is only two or
three years before You know, the infamous drug
or drug issue of Amazing Spider -Man, which they
did without the without the approval of the Comics
Code Authority, where, you know, the pressure
of being Norman Osborn's son and various other
factors in life where, you know, Harry becomes
an addict for the longest time in comics. And
just that that first image of Gwen Stacy checking
out Peter Parker, she's like, hey, Mm -hmm who
wouldn't turn into a puddle Peter who wouldn't?
Yeah I'm gonna say the only thing I have an issue
with with this entire story Peter on a motorcycle
Yeah, come on now. Well, that's how he got around
back. I know but just It seems more Blade or
Punisher style than Spider -Man. True. I just
love the fact that he goes to Big Al's motorcycle
shop. And Big Al looks like somewhere between
a member of the Sons of Anarchy and King Kong
Bundy. Yeah. But yeah, it's how he got around.
I think he even had a couple episodes of the
67. spider -man series we see Peter you know
bumming around on a moped or something like that
well I know currently in ultimate he has this
super cycle yeah at least it's not the spider
-mobile spider -man just constantly ripping off
Batman I see how it is Just yes, we need I'll
give you it's kind of cool to see a bike that
runs up a strand of web like that but the spider
mobile with its Car driving up the side of a
wall and then well, you know Batman is all well
and good that Batman ripped that off years later.
Yes Yeah So like you move on and Peter, you know,
he's got his bike and he goes to show off to
his friends and All of a sudden it's you know
Marlon Brando and the wild one where he picks
up you know Gwen Stacy and off they go and They
get to the Go back to Aunt May's you see in silhouette
Mary Jane Watson Because this is at a time where
you know Aunt May was still in that, oh, Peter,
you must eat your wheat cakes, and oh, you need
a woman in your life, and I'll hook you up with
my best friend's niece. Yeah, this is probably
classic Spidey Kong, but this to me is classic
94 series. It's the same type of Aunt May that
we've seen before in animation. A woman's probably
on, like, seven different kind of pills, and...
still, you know, the doddering old aunt, but
you know, she loves Peter and she just wants
him to be happy. So, you know, that classic show
when you get into book two, where I love the
beginning, where he is spider beds hanging. And
this is at a time where the cops weren't immediately
pulling their guns and trying to drill Spidey,
where he could hang upside down in front of a
newsstand reading a newspaper and getting into
a snarky conversation with the Guy with a vendor.
He's like and I love the comments you think for
all the news that I make for J Jonah bonehead
I'd get a free subscription And the guys like
yeah, yeah, whatever 25 cents. That's what I
love about New Yorkers you know if this guy if
he wasn't trying to get like the money off a
Spidey he'd be setting up a Live cam fee to sell
some make some money off a YouTube or something
There's always Doc Ock later. Yeah. And of course,
you've got to question anything you read in the
Daily Bugle. After all, according to them, I
am a menace. Yeah. And then we get the first
look of our big bad in the series, you know.
At least if you if you've been if you might have
picked this up, I don't know if you did. And
but if you haven't read this before now, folks.
And, but if you've read Spider -Man comics for
any length of time, you pretty much know who
this guy's gonna turn out to be. It's not that
hard to figure out. Yeah, no. If you know your
Spider -Man comics. Yep. So then we go to the
science lab. Of ESU. Where Flash is being a douche,
like always. Oh, it wouldn't be Flash Thompson
if he wasn't a douche. Eh, send him to war, have
him get injured, you know. Bonded with an alien
from outer space, yeah. Yeah. That old rigamarole.
Yeah. And so yeah, it's chemistry class, you
know, Peter and Gwen are having that innocent,
you know, back and forth that... Well, it just
wouldn't be a romance if you didn't have that
back and forth. And then we meet... One of the
creepiest spider -man villains in that his origin
is he's basically a stalker in Professor Warren
Who? Decided that he was so sad and lonely of
course he was in love with Gwen Stacy and when
she died he lost his mind decided no it was the
jackal that killed her and Went on to become
a giggling madman in a furry costume who likes
to clone people. Oh geez So basically, Professor
Warren, aka the Jackal, is entirely responsible
for the clone saga. Never mind Marvel editorial,
it was all this douche. But this is before he
lost his goddamn mind and he was just a college
biology professor. The like I can't get over
how up until flash joins the army how? Douchey
he is in this story yeah, I Mean like his douchebaggery
here is like a whole new level Really really
is yeah, I mean, but this is exactly how he was
at this time in the comics where It was like
that high school jock who just happens to be
going to the same college as the guy he picked
on and The the fact that he still picked on peter
parker after he got laid out back in high school
You know, it was literally the batman one punch
that he got from peter and he was still a dick
for like years after Yeah, but uh You know from
here, I think the only reason why at least specific
to this story that they've put Flash in college
with Peter, is because Spider -Man's cast of
characters has to follow him wherever he can.
You can't do something... Well, you can't nowaday...
He can't just constantly come up with a whole
new supporting cast, so... Yeah. Well, you can
nowadays if you put a villain in the body of
Peter Parker, but I mean, it's just one of those
things where, you know, back then... His the
characters that he was always around had to fall.
It's just like I mean Okay, granted flash is
no roadie, you know, you know, we're Roadie to
Iron Man, but Flash is one of those characters
that people always expect to see whether you
love him or hate him Yeah, at least in at least
one panel of thing. But yeah, he's um, he's an
ultra douche in this in this story And then we
get the Rhino, who wants Spider -Man. I gotta
admit, whatever reason, like County Lockup or
whatever, he's out on Riker's Island, you'd think
you'd have a slightly more sophisticated way
of controlling the gas flow to keep him knocked
out in this cell. And it's basically just like,
you know, on, off, on, off. Yeah. I've never...
don't know again me coming from only what only
seeing the rhino in the cartoons and stuff in
the video games the character like I have zero
interest in the character what's okay a rhino
he's he's basically a super giant non mutated
guy live you know that lives in a rhino suit
he's basically spider -man's Oversized steroided
up rocksteady is what he is. Well, yeah, I mean
initially it was like years later where they
wrote up how he was like X KGB and he was just
trying to survive being like the muscle for all
these criminal organizations and You know, it's
like you have you read the gauntlet storyline
from the modern. It's amazing No, not yet. Okay,
if when you get to that you'll just see like
You feel for him eventually but yeah at this
point in the time it's literally You know, he's
gonna steal gold bullion from armored cars to
make a gold statue of himself Like that was the
level of intelligence he had at this point Where
he's basically got this Kevlar Suit, you know
super cool. It's a little more complicated than
this, but he's basically got a suit made out
of Kevlar glued to his body Mm -hmm You know,
it's just literally spider -man just Punches
him until it gets through his dickhead and he
goes down Yeah, and then he I do like later when
Spidey gets a piece of other suit and he makes
a New webbing to hold the suit. I like the whole
conversation This is so funny. Yeah, they're
young man you're not going anywhere until this
is all cleaned up and then we're going to have
a talk about your allowance yeah and it's you
see the rhinos fighting through that and then
it just starts his suit just starts melting off
his body yep but again like you're saying your
favorite light i love the light i know it's not
quite cupcakes but didn't we talk about you watching
your weight yeah And then we get, you know, he
just, you know, boom, boom, boom, rhino drops.
We see the mysterious big bad in the background
and Peter just thinking himself more about more
about Gwen, you know, and how as strong as he
is that he can take out the rhino. He's has no
idea how to deal with this. And it goes into
where It turns out Aunt May is a clever little
minx because she basically sets it up that Peter
goes home and he gets all dressed up because
he's going out with friends and sets up Peter
so this is where he finally meets Mary Jane Watson
whereas for many issues before this in the run
of Spider -Man where he's constantly missing
Mary Jane. Yeah, you know when he opens the door
and you get the famous you hit face the tiger
you hit the jackpot and that full -on view of
Tim's sale date of Mary Jane. It's just like
damn Mm -hmm. This is a va va boom Yeah, which
was great and then we go into the third book
And you know they're hanging out and I think
it's the coffee bean because I was like the call
it the hangout where the gang would meet at this
age and the spider comics and well flash doing
what flash does striking out horribly yeah as
you see uh where you know mary janes just this
is a point in the comics that mary jane was portrayed
as being this flighty party girl you know always
smiling very just really kind of saucy and well
you see harry osborne's getting all twitter -pated
Yeah, this is before she turned to water. Oh
God Seriously, what were the writers on in 1994?
Okay, that is my on just to step away from this
but that is seriously my only complaint about
that series as far as story -wise goes They never
wrapped it up. They left it on a cliffhanger
Because at the end of the final episode Madam
Web's like we're going to find Mary Jane Watson
the real Mary Jane Watson, but you know, yeah
I'm Paulson is Morty Ventress pretty cool though.
Yeah Yeah, that's Rob Paulson the man can do
no wrong. That's right All right. So Yeah, I
know why I kept calling flash a huge douche.
It's this this scene here I don't get it. I don't
get it. I don't get get a clue flash He's like,
yeah Harry's like what's there to get Parker
knows her Yeah But I love the the epic bird and
flash is still too dumb to notice where Gwen's
like wake up what you don't know about Peter
Parker couldn't fill a thimble. I still don't
get it You know, everyone else is like, oh bird
and he's just like How does the nerd get the
girl like that's the old that's the all -consuming
thought going through flashes, you know barely
expanded consciousness at that point and we go
from there to Well, the lizard has risen again,
and this is just after Dr. Connors to help Peter,
you know come up with the anti rhino webbing
and spider -man even mentioned to duck the chemicals
in use here didn't they like trigger your transformation
into the lizard? And Connors was like, that couldn't
possibly happen twice. And so yeah, it's basically
Mary Jane tags along and rather skillfully distracts
the security guard slash cop that's like roped
off the building where it's time set. Was it
Grand Central? Yeah, and he's like hey Billy
Connors senior dad And I love like this is I
Don't recall this ever actually being the storyline
in the classic Spidey comics like in this goal
this Silver Age like this but it's it basically
becomes almost a sitcom like Plot where you know
miss Mrs. Connors and Billy have come up from
Florida to see you know Kurt And Spider -Man's
like, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, and he's got to
track down the lizard and cure him yet again.
And by the time they fix all that, you know,
literally, Martha and Billy are at the door,
and Spider -Man opens the door, and, hey guys,
how's it going? You know, or, hey, true believers,
as it's in the comics, and, you know, oh yeah,
Spider -Man was helping with the experiment,
and kind of got out of control, excused the mess,
and... You know If this is say the spider -man
was written created now and these stories were
happening now Spider -man is like, okay. Remember
to turn yourself into the authorities after this
doc. He's like, yep. Sure will Spidey Or something
like that because I mean, let's face it. He cured
You know the whole dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde again
with the lizard and then he just goes swinging
out the window and Yep, it's like yeah, you couldn't
possibly have a relapse a third time or a fourth
or fifth or eighth or 700 yeah He certainly wouldn't
go mad and eat his son at some point Which was
really sad into that particular storyline So
Peter does go back home and Harry Osborn sitting
on his porch. Yeah And this is, you know, where
I kind of forgot that they shared a rent -free
living space for a while in the comics. Basically,
Norman, who's, you know, copacetic at this point,
basically buys like a loft apartment and gives
it to Peter and Harry rent -free because they're
going to room together in college, apparently.
And then I love how they end the book where Peter's
just kind of, what? And then Aunt May is like,
Peter, dinner's getting cold, do you need a sweater?
You know, God bless you, Aunt May, don't ever
change. And then, you know, they go, forget what
happened, oh. Book four, Autumn in New York.
Yeah, it was just what they're trying to talk
about at this point, and it's, you know, Aunt
May, you know, Peter's moving out to go to college,
he's gonna live with Harry. Aunt may can't you
know isn't quite capable of living on her own
at this point like she's still really ill half
the time so very Mary Jane's aunt moved in and
You know, it's the Golden Girls, you know Brooklyn
style basically Thankfully and Anna in this is
not as obnoxious as she was in the cartoon series.
Yeah And then we go to back to prison which seems
to be a recurring thing here. And we see, you
know, Adrian Tombs, the vulture, is dying. And
there's this guy, Blacky, was it Gaxton, I think
was his name, who was the second vulture. And
he's, you know, the guy didn't even have half
the class that Adrian Tombs did, you know. And
it's just basically he poisons the vulture in
order to con the location of like a spare set
of wings out of him. And then he escapes to go
hunt for them, you know, in the dead of winter.
And just I'm sorry, just as far as supervillains
origins go, this is weak sauce. Yeah, it really,
really is. He's like, we look at me, I can fly.
You know, and then they go like Peter at this
point, he's trying to get back to the housewarming
party at the loft, but. Now he's got a Deal with
this so you know he goes on buying Mary Jane
and Gwen kind of have a little back and forth
where You don't know if there it's like it's
it's almost a catfight, but not quite Yeah, you
know because they're kind of but it's kind of
sort of marking their territory on Peter and
Flash is outside. He's like, no, this is where
he's kind of getting in this weird, you know,
he's still like a Spider -Man fanboy. So he's
staring outside hoping Spider -Man swing pass
and Harry is like, did you not see the two examples
of woman over there dancing? And Flash was like,
nope, gonna look out the window, look for a guy.
And it's like, oh, your priorities are all sorts
of confused Flash. Where's a closet when you
really need one? Stuff them in it. Yeah, or a
locker. Yeah. But yeah, so he gets into a fight
with, you know, Blackie Gaxton, and you get back
to the party and even flashes like, where the
hell's Parker? Yup. Well, I did like that. He's
like, you know what, this pro nerd probably fell
asleep in the library. Then Mary Jade and Gwen's.
I love how they dress down Flash and Gwen's like,
could it be that you're probably jealous of Parker?
Me? Jealous of the nerd? It's... Just everyone
just finally kind of comes down on Flash is like,
really? Like, Peter's an okay guy, why are you
being a dick? Yeah. And you get back to the fight
and... Spider -man basically gets knocked out
he wakes up the next day and he's missed the
party and you get that full -on shot of Well,
they used to make apartments like this mm -hmm
you know with the I Just can't get over the the
60s era design of this place Oh, in book five,
yeah. Yeah, just like where you get that full
-on shot and you see there's martini glass on
the coffee table, martini glass in an empty bottle
on the TV, requisite pool table. Yeah, but you
gotta think though, this is Norman Osborn's kid.
Yeah. The Osborns are used to doing, you know,
you know, hold your pinky up kind of rich people
type of stuff. But yeah, and it's just basically
This sets up with something became a running
trope in the comics how Peter would come home,
you know beat and Sometimes beat in and just
crashing in the bed and Harry's like, yeah We'll
talk when you wake up You know where Peter passes
out and he's just like nice apartment You know
falls right asleep and then you go back to where
Peter fell in the snow and slept through the
night. We got our big bads, you know, tracking
him. And at this point, Gaxton got away. So the
mystery man goes to the tombs in the hospital
and drops the bomb that, you know, blackie poisoned
him just to find the wings and uses a blow dart
to wake him up or make him better or something.
Yeah. We go back to the apartment and Peter is
basically fast fast asleep and Who chicken soup
on May is that you on May like there we have
MJ It's like if you mistook that for at May you
sir need help Yeah, well he in Peter's defense.
He did have his arm over his eyes so yeah But
when has any woman before now ever brought him
soup that wasn't his aunt? Yeah, that's true.
But yeah, you know, you get another nice design
of Mary Jane Watson. And then she's feeding him
and Peter's living the dream. I mean, he's in
bed. He's got a gorgeous redhead spoon feeding
him soup. In walks a gorgeous blonde. And then
they're both in, you know, sitting there talking
to him. And Peter, you see the dumb look he has
in his face. He's just like, uh, buh, guh. Yeah.
Like I said, maybe it was the fever and I was
hallucinating, but I think the two of you were,
well, let's just say this never happened when
I was Peter Parker, the bookworm. Yeah. I like
that. Then he sees, uh, you know, Blackie just
randomly fly by his window and he's like, uh.
I think I should be getting some, uh, rest. You
can go now." And they just have like that scene
where they're like, "'Screw you, dude." And he's
just like razz -a -frazz -a -frickin' vulture
gonna beat him. I love the Mutley reference.
Yeah. I love that. That's so awesome. So we go
back and you see flash is trying to hit on MJ
again You've got these like I swear this bottom
panel here I swear a flash and and and Harry
could be middle -year solid guards with the question
mark in the exclamation. Yeah It's just like
flat and I love that the quote the exclamation
mark is didn't at least what the hell and Harry's
like, I don't know Because the girls basically
storm out and you know, you see Randomly Peter's
he's about to go out and you know Well, he's
the first pardon the French but he's basically
gonna go out and choke a bitch yeah, and he randomly
starts thinking of Huck Finn and uncle Ben and
You know gonna do the right thing You know but
you know they get into it and it's basically
Blackie has robbed a bank and I love you know
comics because you don't see giant -ass dollar
signs on the side of these bags ever in real
life but you know but as if to tell us what could
possibly be in this bag could be a bowling ball
no pretty sure it's money but yeah so the vultures
get into it and Blackie drops the bag right in
front of flash And this chunk of like gargoyle
or something's about to, you know, cave his head
in and Spider -Man swings down and grabs him.
We get a reference to the cover of Amazing Fantasy
15. With the pose and all that being what it
was with Spider -Man carrying this thug. But
in this case, it's Flash Thompson. It drops him
and basically tells Flash to return the money
and... This starts flash thinking because you
know it's I love the Spiderman goes back to he
jumps on Adrian tombs vulture and Run causes
him to fly right into black see blackie, and
he's just yelling rubbing speed Because he puts
them both through like this billboard and that
gentleman's how you killed two birds with one
stone drum roll please but yeah so you know flash
has returned the money peter goes back to the
apartment he's like uh hey kids what's going
on and in like the 20 minutes or whatever since
that happened flash has gone and signed up for
the army which is like a hugely hugely mature
sort of decision i guess because considering
flash is hugely immature most of his life but
for the few times that he's run into his hero
spider -man he's like basically he's like yeah
I haven't done anything with my life and you
know if I should follow spider -man's example
so yeah he walked into a recruiting office and
joined the war effort in the knob at this point
in the time Of course later on they change it
to flash join the army and engage was part of
this conflict in Southeast Asia Yeah, because
once we move beyond and then we got the big bad
outside, you know sniffing on a piece of Spider
-man's costume and seriously if you don't know
who this is at this point folks You need to stop
reading comics Yeah, I'm just saying They they've
telegraphed who the villain is Why? Well, at
least it isn't the guy with the giant fucking
fishbowl on his head. Oh, we'll have a discussion
about my favorite Spider -Man villain off -air,
Mike. Worst Spider -Man villain ever. I wouldn't
be saying that if they made a fourth movie and
Bruce Campbell was Mysterio, my friend. Because
that was totally what was gonna happen. Wow.
So... Anyway... Going back to Peter walking down
the stairs here for a second. What's all the
hubbub, bub? Yeah. Do not steal Wolverine's lines,
dude. Don't do that. That's how kids talk back
in the day with their cool slang and what's up
daddy -o and 23 skidoo. I love when we open the
book six here and I love the this was like the
original classic design of the scorpion with
just like the kind of reverse domino mask thing
going on where his face is covered and It's the
same design they use for the scorpion in the
67 animated series where you know, he's looks
like he's Scowling all the freaking time and
then he drinks the juice that turns him into
a giant. He's just like You know I just love
this design of the scorpion is what I'm saying
and the villain who Should we just go ahead and
so now we'll wait for the reveal, but I love
the the big bad here in shadows He goes over
he's like the scorpion the octopus the rhino
the lizard the vulture and even years on from
now you look like at least a third of spider
-man's rogues galleries are animal based villains
Yep. And now the hunt begins. It's Craven, ladies
and gentlemen. Really? I don't see a... Oh, yeah,
it's Craven. Like I said, if you couldn't figure
that out by now... I should have figured it out
the first time I saw it when I saw the fur fucking
coat. Well, yeah, granted that was just a fur
trench coat, but yeah, it's Craven. It's, you
know, Alexi Cravenov, dark comrade. Yeah, eventually
I will be half man half lion because that's how
they do things in New York But yeah, so you see
it's Valentine's Day and Peter and Harry are
getting dolled up to go out and It's party time
ladies and gentlemen, I Love this is like, you
know a couple of months later because you know
flash shows up and he's talking to like Robbie
Robertson's kid who's become part of the cast
at this point. Peter is just basically like going
to answer the door and everyone just piles their
coats in his arms and then he goes to dump them
in the bedroom is standard party protocol and
Harry's gotten a call his dad might be coming
by the party which there you know it's half a
50 -50 chance that it'll be a major downer but
who knows. Are you just gonna ignore the vocal
effect that they used on that other page? The
fact that MJ swacked him. Swack? Swack. Sealed
with a kiss. Yeah. Now I caught that. Yeah. That's
just... I just love the look in Peter's eye there.
He's just like, I'm dating Gwen. I'm dating Gwen.
I'm dating Gwen. blonde blonde blonde blonde
ginger ginger you know but yeah so everyone's
partying you know it's basically a goodbye party
for flash because you know he's shipping off
to the war and Spidey sense and I love I don't
remember Craven like Craven leaps through the
window he shouting in their dead he hunts the
lion Okay, I love I love Peter's narration Craven
the hunter Question mark exclamation point. Yeah,
I just don't remember just look at this image
of Craven I don't remember him ever having big
hoop earrings. I Don't even like the design on
him. Well, he's always kind of had that hue the
the huge kind of mutton chop handlebar mustache
thing like Yeah, but he's never had leopard pants
at least out of the one stuff that I've seen
No, that's that's that's like OG original Craven.
Yeah, that's I don't like OG Craven. Yeah, I
Still is like flash tries to put him in a headlock
and he's just like, you know gut punch And he
just looked I love the the sinister look sale
looks in his eye where he sees hair He goes you
and Harry's like me before he grabs Harry and
you know ducks out the window again and You know
Peter's just I Love this Gwen call 9 -1 -1. Wait,
where are you going? Camera bugle photos spider
-man. Bye. Bye I wish I could ask you now did
either of you ever bite my pathetic attempts
excuses. Yeah Which I mean for years that was
the thing and you just You knew, having read
the comics, that Peter was very, very intelligent.
But I loved it, like, in Dan Slott's run, you
know, post -brand new day where Peter got fired
or he got blacklisted as being a photographer.
And he didn't have to make that excuse that I
got to go make rent this month. Bye. You know,
with the whole thing. So, yeah. And this goes
into, I forget, I think it's like Spider -Man
57 or something, that era, where Osborn has been
hired by Parties Unknown to take care of Spider
-Man. Or I say Kraven's been hired by Parties
Unknown, sorry. Well, it was Green Goblin, because
Spidey said the Goblin's dead. Yeah. But, you
know, I like in the fight here, you know, Craven
is, you know, just whooping Spidey. And then
I don't know if that's supposed to be a garbage
can or a flower pot or something, but Harry's
just like jerk bonk. And then Craven, that was
a very foolish thing to do. It's just like, oh
snap. Yeah. But yeah, this was around the era
where Norman doesn't know he's the Green Goblin,
but they start slipping back. I love the fact
that a lot of great comic book villains, specifically
in Spider -Man, are like the literal reincarnations
of Jekyll and Hyde. How at this point, Norman,
you know, he's sweating all the time and he's
like, oh, it's just a headache. And he'll have
like blackout periods where, you know, the Goblin
takes over and he goes out and causes mischief
and whatnot. And we go back to the party where,
you know, Gwen kind of gives Peter a dressing
down where she worries about him because he's
basically acting like, you know, a fireman or
you're running into a burning building and all
that and, you know, it ends with, will you be
my Valentine? And well, finally the nerd gets
the girl. I mean, I'm sure it's happened before
now, but it's nice to see that, you know, So
yeah, it's nice to see the parker luck doesn't
always run true to form No, that only happens
in the next book. We'll talk about so good. But
yeah, so we snap back to It's at me's house Peters
up in the attic and this is basically post Gwen's
funeral Where he's just getting his thought he's
getting his thoughts out of the system and he's
kind of apologizing Actually, no, I'm sorry.
This is not their funeral. This is like you this
is after he's been married to MJ Yeah, because
he makes is like the water later become my wife
and all that and yeah It's just you know, say
hello to Gwen for me and It's just finally up
until now it's that you don't get why it's blue
and it's just Peter remembering, you know the
good times and all that right and he says like
Because it's around this time of year where you
know, it's around the time that Gwen died and
he's like I feel blue and you finally just clicks
you know as to why they named it blue like this
and You know, it's I love that last line and
for and I longed for a time when a girl I knew
with an incredible smile and so much good in
her Heart made me think life can be great, you
know and seeing I was like That's good. And you
know what say what you will about Jeff Loeb's
writing that was gold Yeah, this whole story
was really really excellent writing. I will say
that in the trade it has The alternate covers.
Oh, yeah What I assume are alternates book five
is my favorite The one with Gwen and MJ and Spidey
swinging between the two of them Yeah, he's like
swinging away. He's like mind on the crime mind
on the crime mind on the crime Yeah, although
I think my favorite for the alternate covers
was probably book of three Hmm especially or
so get it's just like that Naked silhouette back
shot of Mary Jane. He's swinging away. He's like
I'm dating a blonde. I'm dating a blonde Well,
overall I really loved the story. I thought that
was great there. I don't really particularly
like Craven's design in the story. Yeah. And
it should have taken me a lot longer than realizing
who that was. Like I should have figured it out
the first time when I was reading it. I still
didn't figure it out until it happened. Yeah.
But yeah, no, I mean, if you give this a rating,
this is a straight up five. Oh, yeah, you can't
convince me it's anything less. I could see a
four and a half Yeah based on sales are like
I like sales art, but it's the I just don't like
the craven design that's the only thing i don't
like about it that you know at least and if that's
just one nitpick and i was going to take a point
of a half a point off of it uh four and a half
out of five is still almost perfect yeah i mean
so i i've always kind of loved like the early
spidey villains like this like the classic rogues
gallery like craven and all that at least it's
not the grim hunter in the 90s where you know
what his oldest of his two sons becomes like
a techno like they give him this armored costume
you know with a molded steel lion head on his
like left pectoral and you know it's the 90s
we need to make it extreme yeah no no you don't
Alright, we're gonna take a quick break. You're
going to hear from the black cat herself and
we'll come back with Spider -Man the return of
the black cat after this. It's action. It's drama.
It's comedy. It's Decian the superhero webcomic.
Decian's got superhero antics and sexy girls.
Read it now at Decian .com. D -A -S -I -E -N
dot com. Found you spider at last. We are back,
and there's a time difference between the events
of Spider -Man Blue and obviously the events
that are in the Return of the Black Cat trade.
How much time has passed, JT? Well, it's not
so much a time difference, it's just kind of
a point of order in terms of storytelling. And
just to rewind the clock back a bit, we gotta
go back to the Marvel Civil War. where Iron Man
goes, Spidey, you're my boy, you gotta be like
the face of the pro -registration. So Spider
-Man unmasks on national TV and the Kingpin immediately
hires an assassin to take out Mary Jane to basically,
you know, futz with Spidey. The assassin ends
up hitting Aunt May and she lies dying in the
hospital for like months on end in the comics.
So Mephisto, you know, the devil of Marvel comes
to him and says, uh... I'll fix it so she lives
but I'm gonna take your marriage or well the
happiness that Mary Jane and Peter have with
their marriage and the only reason I can think
the devil would take his time to make this offer
to Spider -Man that he's working for Dan DiDio
and Joe Cassata who both gone on record as saying
heroes don't need to have significant others
because then they don't have anything to overcome
or some BS like that just because they're sad
and lonely individuals I'm sure they're both
married that's just the most dickish reason i
can think of that they would come up with that
yes anyway spider -man makes the deal with the
devil and right before the effect happens mary
jane makes a little side deal and basically what
this does is dan slott came on and uh he he's
basically became like the godfather like the
editorial kind of became the jeff johns of the
spider -man comics and they did kind of a quasi
DC reboot where Mary Jane and Peter never got
married they just lived together for years and
eventually they broke up and then when the story
starts over Peter's moved back in with Aunt May
he's trying to find his own place he can't make
rent they kind of go back to this classic the
classic tropes of Spider -Man's life like that
so at this point he's gone from working for Jonah
the bugle, which is sold out from under him when
Jonah has a heart attack. His wife is like, screw
this noise. You don't need this stress. And for
years, people have said the Daily Bugle was a
tablet. No, it becomes a true tablet under the
new owner, Dexter Bennett. And at this point,
Peter Parker, he was a paparazzi for Bennett
for a while, and then he quit. like everybody
walked out of the bugle except for Betty Brandt
because she needed the money and Peter joined
and Jonah then as we all know went on to become
mayor of NYC and Peter gets a job as a staff
photographer for the mayor's office and At this
point, you know, he's had He was rooming with
a cop Vince Gonzalez and then Vince goes to jail
for taking part in a job to frame up Spidey and
his sister moves in. And when we start the black
cat thing, the chameleon had pretended to be
Peter Parker for a few days and slept with his
roommate. And then Peter went, uh, that wasn't
me. Yeah. And she becomes like this Herod in
like this harpy where, you know, where's the
rent? And basically, because Peter left a few
things in the common area, she starts putting
all of his shit down the garbage disposal, and
you know, the true, like, the Parker Luck running
true to form. Yes. Before we get too far into
this - But that's basically where, at this point,
Peter is just like, oh jeez. Yeah. That cover
is simply amazing. Yes. One of the best covers
I have ever seen in comics. Yeah, well, it's
done by J Scott Campbell who did comics like
Danger Girl and Yeah, that's you can get that
as a poster. I'm pretty sure oh, yeah, you go
to the Marvel website and we have like the cover
is great as you get in the inside this this is
probably one of my favorite like Update things
that Marvel did where it's basically Peter's
journal sort of thing. Yeah And it's you see
in the background. It's like this is like post
aunt may marrying Jonah's dad and At this point
the career like Craven's wife and daughter like
setting up this They're setting up this huge
plan to take down spider -man And like I said,
this is after the chameleon had impersonated
Peter and slept with Michelle Peter's roommate
and then Peter's like it's not you. It's me and
Yeah, it's just as you get in the story like
they're they they've kidnapped Madame Webb and
they're you know force -feeding her opiates so
she can like divine the future and tell them
what they need to know in order to set things
up and Yeah, it's just yeah Peter you know Michelle's
pissed at him for telling Peter telling her that
look it's not gonna work blah blah blah and then
Nora Works in who's like as we talked about in
the superior spider -man was this reporter? Who's
like got more brass than Lois Lane some days?
No, I love Nora in this oh, no, it's it's great
that Peter You know Peter Superman has this Lois
Lane in his life. It's just it works For the
thing, but it sets up like this sitcom trail
cuz now you got Michelle you got Nora in walks
Mary Jane and In the span of five seconds, they
all get pissed at Peter and storm out, except,
you know, Michelle goes into her room, Mary Jane
storms out the front door, and Nora goes into
Peter's bedroom, and then all of Peter's stuff
in the sink catches on fire, and Peter's just
like, oy vey. Yeah, right. This is... You know,
but he goes up, and he's got this guy, he's swinging
through the air, you know... Moaning and complain
into this guy. The guy is just like I peed myself
and that's what you get for being a mugger. Mr.
Dampy pants Yeah, Peter is not in a great mood
to deal with this mugger Yeah, but it's just
I love what happens like he swings up on a gargoyle
Which hey could have been the gargoyle Bruce
for all we know You caught that one did you Oh,
yeah. Okay. So yeah, and he's swinging and then
the gargoyle breaks and then both of his web
shooters, you know, break, which is putting it
kindly. And they fall into like this rooftop
pool in this penthouse. And I like where Peter's
Peter's like, Really, God? Really? When does
it end? And sexy. Yep. the entrance i still like
that he's like i take it the old bad luck powers
are back well for more i'm sitting there the
hilarity ensues powers but yeah they're back
and so am i and it's just like i love mike mccone's
art man like it's just i wouldn't say there's
a softness but there's a smoothness to it you
know and well you look at the black cat yeah
yeah It's I still like Spidey's thing. It's like
well, that's a truckload of awesome. Thanks for
the heads up Do you do I send the bill to you
or do you want to just make a check out to my
chiropractor? Yeah, and that's one of the best
things about this era this brand new day era
spider -man and onwards is Well up until Otto
takes over That the quips Are so good. Yeah You
know, I want an animated movie of this story
right now with Christopher Daniel Barnes and
Jennifer Hale is Peter and Felicia, you know
as much as I like Jennifer Hale's voice. I like
Trisha Helfer on spectacular. Oh Just a classic
You need 94 voice actors Well, maybe you do Mike.
Yeah, I Still like that Well, as the story goes
on, like, they start kind of catching up and
everything. And he's like, how'd that work out?
Or Black Cat is like, well, you know, it's kind
of come and gone since you dumped me. And Spider's
like, I didn't dump you stupid web fluid on chair.
Yeah. But I love the line. It's like, OK, but
you're not bitter that he backpedals into the
pool again. And Cat's like, why be bitter when
I can be me? Yeah, but that smile on her face
is like oh you minks, you know So apparently
she has a job to do yeah, great breaking into
this place which oddly enough is Dexter Bennett
owner of the DB as it was called at this point
in the comics Not the bugle the DB because branding
people Yeah, the DB Nation. I caught that and
I'm like, oh, burn. But yeah, so you got them
dancing through a laser net and go into their
requisite wall safe and they find a man dead
inside with guts made out of concrete. Yeah.
I like Spidey. He goes to look at him and he's
like, oh, dang, I just broke that guy's spleen.
Ew. Ew. Yeah. And breaking that off all of a
sudden they're like little like ball bearing
shootout from the guy and then they hit the wall
and they turn into like metal spikes and it's
Diablo folks who for those who don't know is
a classic fantastic four villain. He's basically
an alchemist from like 500 years ago who can
anything science can do I can undo and then make
better. Yep of or as Spidey calls him dr. Kevorkian's
evil Spanish cousin Yeah, oh Man I Saw I love
cats burn. He's like it's Diablo you did it I
meant any clue what he's doing here if you weren't
so good in the sack you'd be completely useless
this but he's like I'm good in the sack I Love
like the like the back -and -forth these two
have like the play between you know felicia and
peter is so good so great and then you kind of
forgotten all this thing that uh mr dampy pants
was still outside in the pool i know i know it's
so awesome yeah and it's yeah basically diablo's
set off this bomb because he's looking for something
in the apartment and uh you know so basically
him and cat split up And Peter goes after after
webbing down Dampy pants and he catches up with
her and they just happen to be across on a roof
across from a TV station And they're like, oh,
I wish I could quit you Yeah, exactly and then
they make out on the big screen in Times Square
and Mary Jane's gone free and she's like what
the Yeah, she's just like oh you ass Look on
her face and as you know, let's face it kid.
This issue is nothing but gold It is yeah. I
mean, it's it's so great But as much as Mike
like the first cover folks Well, here's the thing
with this one is They break into a hotel room
really Well, you're not gonna talk about the
cover Mike oh Yeah, yeah, like let's face it
if you if you like the first cover on 606 607
it's like Oh dear god my brain is quit working
See I think the problem is in the trade that
I have Are you gonna go to the back to look at
the covers? I don't even think that there's Because
like from the kiss oh See yeah, the covers eat
the cover must be missing because the kiss happens
And then I when I read this before we recorded
I must have completely missed the to be continued
because the next page is them in bed There is
no cover So again, I got this from the free public
library, so it could, you know, eventually, you
know, that could be the the problem there. Give
me a second. I got I think I can help you out
with that. And let's try this. So the cover to
607, folks, is basically Black Cat wearing your
mask, Spider -Man shirt rolling around in a bunch
of diamonds and jewelry. Oh my god. And looking
fine. Yeah, there's not enough leather. It looks
fine, it really does, but there's... That's the
whole point of liking black hat. It's a skin
-tight black leather suit. I didn't know you
were a furry fetishist, Mike. No No, I'm just
fucking but yeah, so yeah that like Mike says
they break into a hotel and Well, they do what
consenting adults do in a hotel room Yeah And
it's just Peters the own narration is like just
Him trying to deal with you know, who Felicia
is and all that and then he wakes up the next
day Basically for completely like black cat took
off in the middle of the night as she is want
to do and This newlywed couple comes through
the door and he's like, oh my god. I'm sorry.
Please don't look, you know, you look like a
lovely couple moment I'm out and then I love
the thing is like and with that graceful exit
I left my half clad butt off for the next 25
blocks before I realized I just woke up from
the best night's sleep I've had in months without
an ounce of guilt You know And then, you know,
he goes back home and makes mention of him smiling
like that, pisses off his roommate even more.
And then he goes into the DB offices where he,
instead of webbing up Dexter Bennett, he webs
up his monkey boys. Yeah. And Bennett drops the
knowledge the guy that was dead in his safe is
this like ex -partner of his from business deals
years ago. And Spider -Man looks, uh, what the
hell is that in the cover? He and Dexter. Hey,
don't blame me. It's on the web You know a real
swinger And then you know they go so he goes
to track down You know black cat again in one
of these warehouses that Bennett mentions And
he's like, I know you're there a cat come out.
He's like, oh, I thought you spider sense only
went off when you're in danger He's like, yeah,
but I just accidentally scooshed a fistful of
rat poop the same moment my underwear ripped
I absolutely love the two of them in this. They're
so great. The dialogue, the back and forth, man,
it's so good. They basically start making out
up in the rafters, and then Peter's phone goes
off, or A -phone's going off, and I love cat's
lines. I hate fighting when I'm frisky. And they
go to the office below and Diablo has, I don't
know if he's frozen, turned people into glass
or he's just frozen them or something. But he's
making off with, so he's looking, digging through
some files and, you know, Spider -Man out of
nowhere through the window tackling him and they
basically get into his hero on villain on Cat
themed cat burglar fight. Yeah, I Do have to
say something about the whole break It's not
just Batman and Robin. I guess every superhero
likes picking glass out of their shorts pretty
much It's like so just this fight I love When
Spider -Man fights villains that he he's maybe
fought once before Or knows in passing because
he has no idea how to deal with the Diablo a
little bit in the course of this fight In addition
to black cats powers kind of fussing with his
gear So Peter what is the deal with like? No
again As someone who hasn't read a lot of the
past Spidey stuff and has only known her through
animation, what is the deal? Is it just a play
on the whole Black Cat Halloween thing? No, she
originally, I believe it was Kingpin, had a hand
in funding the experiment they gave. She basically
has like this probability altering power where
it's like Domino and X -Men. Whereas Domino just
has, or Longshot, they have these luck powers
where stuff just... falls, the dominoes fall
their way. Black Cat's power basically causes
everyone else's shit to go haywire. Like it's
literally a Black Cat power where, you know,
Black Cat crosses your path and bad luck follows.
Well, her power just causes things to like break
down. at the worst possible... See, I kind of
prefer that she's just the super soldier. Yeah,
that was a cool origin, but like I said, I read
the comics way before I read or watched the cartoon,
but yeah, so basically her power is almost like
entropy, like it just causes shit to break down.
I mean, as evidenced by the fact that Spider
-Man put his hand in rat poop and his underwear
ripped, so... Yeah. But yes, so Diablo basically
causes the cement floor to melt and reform and
you know Spider -man breaks his feet out and
they go after Diablo and he throws these like
modules at them that Basically encases black
cat and spider -man in gold Yeah, where they're
basically they're not completely covered it's
like he If you look at the art, it's just kind
of like somebody threw molten gold on them and
it hardened instantly. So it's like patches are
exposed and, you know, Peter's like thinking
about, you know, gold and the universe is funny
sometimes. And now back to breathing, which isn't
exactly happening so good. And then there's like
Diablo trying to be like, you know, sinister
and suave. You know everything like that. He
makes mention of everything I make eventually
breaks down Sometimes faster than others and
this is all going towards later on in the story
but Piers basically screaming at black cat and
we use your powers damn it use your powers and
Basically, I don't know exactly what aqua reggae
is it's As Spider -Man says in the story, it's
a compound used to dissolve and refine gold,
which Diablo just happened to have in a capsule
on his belt. And it just happens to fall off
and break and freeze Spider -Man and the Black
Cat. Yep. I love at this point that they've given
Spider -Man some new tricks in the comics where
he's got like impact webbing and such like that.
He uses his webbing differently. I love he goes
like Black hat isn't breathing so he gives her
CPR and he's like that has to be the first time
I've ever been slipped the tongue during CPR
And she's like instinct you can still do the
chest compressions if you want It's like seriously
you're gonna go fight a super villain, okay,
I Just like I remember when this issue first
came out a couple years ago. I just threw up
my ads I was like fine. Clearly your priorities
are in a different place Peter but you know they
go to get Diablo and it's poof he literally slinks
out and we go from Mike McCown to uh didn't recognize
who the other artist is but they figure out that
uh one of the buildings that Dexter Bennett and
the concrete guts man made back in the day where
you use steel that Diablo made which means he
can drop like a pellet and cause like a building
just to collapse so they figure out what building
ends peter goes and like webs the hell out of
it to hold it together until they can get people
out of it and then there's jona as mayor i've
built a cornerstone of my platform keeping the
people of this city safe and then peter just
basically throws like a web ball at him to shut
him up Yeah, and then they figure out black cat
and Peter figure out that it wasn't just one
building There's like 40 buildings built with
this Diablo steel And it turns out to be a huge
multi -billion dollar insurance scam You know
which black cat and Peter spider -man have basically
screwed Diablo out of billions and billions of
dollars Yeah, Diablo should be stroking a shaved
cat at this point. Mr. Bigglesworth? And this
issue ends again with Anya Kravinoff who's cravings
like I think she's like 16 years old and just
the full -blown psychotic, but she comes into
Diablo's lair and You know, my mother would like
to talk to you, you know bump bump bump What
does your trade transition to after that? I've
got the single issues. Oh, you've got the singles.
Well, the trade transitions to Web of Spider
-Man number one. Okay, well, that... I didn't
dig that out, but Web of Spider -Man was... This
is like Web of Spider -Man volume two, mind you.
I'm just gonna look it up quick on the net here.
Web of Spider -Man... Cane of Echoes is what
it is. What's that? Cane of Echoes. Okay, I...
Huh Yeah, that's why I I'm just looking at quick
up on the comic line. Oh, I know This is one
of the reasons why I love the black cat story,
but then all of a sudden the trade goes to Web
of spider -man and I'm like, hey wait what? Because
the black cat story ends with next who is Ben
Reilly really? But yeah, it's just way too weird
for me. It's a bit of a disconnect, I guess,
in the story. You think? I mean, I'm all for
just skipping Web of Spider -Man, honestly. Yeah,
no, Web of Spider -Man is like at this point
that he came out with a couple of X'd and Spidey
titles, and Web of Spider -Man is basically telling
more Spider -Man stories that weren't necessarily
related to the ongoing plot of Amazing. Yeah,
so that it's basically just You know like episode
35 .5 sort of stories It takes place I wish they
wouldn't have done that I wish they would have
been smarter when they were doing the trade compilation
and put the thing at the back of the book Well,
it's probably or at least after issue 611. Yeah
So we get to 608 And the cover is basically ripping
Spidey's head apart. Yeah. The villain for this
story is this guy named Raptor. Who, as we get
into the story, the flashback to the five years
where Ben Reilly, who is the clone of Spider
-Man, by way of Professor Miles Warren, aka the
Jackal, And he basically left New York City for
five years, traveled around the country, you
know, just kind of living the, you know, Bill
Bixby, Bruce Banner sort of lifestyle. And he's
getting a job as a research assistant with this
professor or doctor writer. And then we go back
to the present where Spider -Man's fighting with
Screwball again, who I think is a criminally
underused like, C -list villain because she's
more of an annoyance than anything. It's not
like she's a real threat She so she's kind of
like oh What's her name? OXA former love No stunner
no stunner was an actual threat This is okay
screwball isn't screwball is basically She calls
herself. She's a she's a thief, but she calls
herself a performance artist and she's basically
like an internet villain where she's got you'll
see she's got like that purple dot in the middle
of her helmet's forehead there and she's basically
like a live streaming super villain like she's
like a super expert at like parkour and shit
and she like rips off places and just tries she
tries to generate internet hits and google revenues
and bullshit like that and so spider -man basically
catches her and she's like uh Well, you can catch
me or you can Grab all the bear bonds. I just
stole and With you know with great power comes
great responsibility and a lot of pains in my
web, but I hate my job some days. I really do
and And it's also kind of a commentary At this
point. So like like I said Peters at this point.
He's working as a photographer for the mayor's
office. He's also back to picking up freelancer
jobs through Frontline, which is the newspaper
that Ben Urich and another reporter, I can't
remember her name at the moment, started as basically
a two person online news site. And eventually
when the 90 % of the staff that walked out on
Dexter Bennett, they basically walked up to the
front door and Robbie Robertson is like, yo,
we gonna do this? Yeah, so so they they Expanded
the scope of frontline and Ben Urich's there
and Ben Urich is now, you know, J Jonah Jameson
basically and He's like sorry Peter by the time
you got here with these it's already online It's
just kind of a commentary on how print newspapers
are kind of slowly dying. Yeah, and then Dr.
Ryder shows up And he had shown up previously
in Amazing like amazing spider -man annual 36
which had come out for this where Peter had gone
to Boston and He kind of forgot that There's
like the Parker side of the family is all we've
ever really known Yeah, uncle Ben Parker, but
there was May Riley So he mits like all these
all this family on Aunt May's side of the family
you know some of the dialogue in that annual
when he meets his cousins is like oh he's gorgeous
like just it's like what if you know Seth MacFarlane
was voicing Peter Parker's family basically god
no well from ted but so yeah still writer as
you find out what happened well you find out
in these next couple of issues what happened
to writer why he has superpowers but basically
he's like this guy like he he's super strong
super fast kind of psychotic and he tends to
grow like giant his lower jaw expands he grows
like giant fangs and kind of hulks out in a weird
way he thinks Peter is Ben Reilly due to the
fact that while they look exactly alike He basically
cause causes a lot of shit and he leaves like
this newspaper with a sketch of Peter and You
know as if this is like from years ago in Portland
where this happened You know peds Ben Reilly
was a suspect in the fire that killed writers
family mm -hmm and I don't know. Do you want
to just skip over the writer stuff or just go
with the main story here? Because it's kind of
difficult with a story like this where you pulp
fiction it, you know going back and forth Yeah,
well, okay. So to sum it up the writer stories
basically, you know the years ago when Ben Reilly
was in Portland he you know grew close to professor
writer working for him and he's like basically
working on the theory that dinosaurs evolved
out of existence and where you know science says
they evolved into birds, riders going to the
theory, well maybe they evolved into humans.
So he's trying to prove his theory and he ends
up experimenting on himself, making him like
a man, kind of half man, half dinosaur almost,
although not to the point that Stegron the dinosaur
man or anything like that, who literally turned
into a bipedal stegosaurus. But the experiment
causes writer to go, you know, nutsy cuckoo,
which tends to happen when you experiment on
yourself in comics Yes, and he causes a fire
which takes the lives of his wife and daughter
or wife and kids I should say and you know afterwards
blamed it on Ben Reilly who ran for the hills
afterwards because Well, he doesn't need this
shit Yeah, and then he comes searching years
later. He comes searching for revenge But you
know as we move forward spider -man's going he's
trying to track down He's trying to track down
rider and he runs headlong Into his evil clone
Kane. Yes. There's another clone folks Who is
there are many clones? Okay, there's so many
clones Send in the clones But yeah Kane is a
half failed clone where he suffers what's Basically
a clone disease called degeneration where his
body is just constantly breaking down, but not
quite So he's in constant pain and he has this
Because his DNA is corrupted his ability to walk
on walls the way spider -man does he can also
like He's got like this molecular acid burn thing
that he lays hands on you and he can burn you
Like and leave it leaves like this fugly Like
mark of Kane's scar type of scar all over your
body. It just looks like a giant massive veins
or something like that and while spider -man
is getting choked out by Kane Rider has gone
to his apartment in his Well, they set it up
in this great kind of sinister cliffhanger where
he schmoozes his way into his apartment past
Michelle and one of the last issues you see of
him is He's starting to kind of Raptor out because
he's growing his fangs and his face is getting
all dinosaur -y and That's where the issue ends
Yeah But yeah, it's it's I would say he's an
unforgettable villain like I like the idea of
Raptor Just in the fact that you see this another
chapter of Ben Reilly's life of you know, what
was it like for him? because he basically self
-exiled himself from NYC for all these years,
you know, and there's like a long time where
he's on the run and he was just working as like
a dishwasher or he gets involved with this one
chick at one point and ends up tries living a
good life in Seattle and then everything goes
to crap so he runs away again. If you thought
Peter had bad luck, Ben Riley's luck just just
sucked. For for all like he'd meet people and
they would die basically Yeah, I'm gonna say
right now unless um Unless cat shows up and some
of these other issues that we're gonna be covering
later here in the trade I would have preferred
just to cover those first couple issues cuz like
that was the whole point of me even seeking this
out was that this was supposed to be her thing
and She's only in that first story and the rest
of its Ben Reilly Well, until I go back and actually
read the origin of Ben Reilly, I don't give a
crap about Ben Reilly. Well, I could sum them
up very quickly if you'd like the next two issues.
So in the next couple of issues, we see, you
know, writers experiment self. It's going out
of control. His family dies. And if you come
back to the present, Peter and Cain more or less
team up to take care of Raptor and it turns out
Raptor and Kane are actually working together
to get to Peter who at one point Raptor is kidnapped
or he's taken hostage Harry Osborn and Peter's
three female cousins who are all living together
in Aunt May's house in Queens and then Screwball
shows up who Spider -Man set up to his like she's
called him out and Spider -Man say hey show up
here will fight and you can have your millions
of internet views and it's basically all a distraction.
So Peter can get loose and take care of the villains.
And then, well, he beats Raptor. Kane, Raptor,
and Screwball get away. Raptor and Kane meet
up again. And, well, we haven't seen Raptor since
because I'm pretty sure Kane, well, he chokes
a bitch to death. Yeah, he does. you know that's
basically and like i said in the fact that i
like raptor in the fact that it's like i said
it's a look back at a chapter in ben riley's
life but other than that it's he's not all that
a great super villain so like these three issues
are like i i'd give them overall and just three
all together i'd give them a three on the scale
Yeah, they're okay, but they're kind of forgettable
at the same time seeing again because I'm reading
this in the trade The other thing why I don't
like the trade overall Is how it's collected
that you have the black cat story? first and
then it skips to web of spider -man then it goes
back to the 600s and it's like oh my god, really
does this So Yeah, that's like I said off air,
folks, the cover is a lie. I mean, to call it
to return to the Black Cat and only have those
two issues and you have these other four. I mean,
the last issue, 6 -11, Joe Kelly, Joe Kelly at
this point was like the main writer on the Spider
-Man titles, but Dan Slott was kind of the angel
on his shoulder in the background. There's Eric
Canete does the art in the last issue, which
is basically a team up. with Spider -Man and
Deadpool. And we get Deadpool in the club schmoozing.
He's basically paid for these women to dress
up like various supervillains. And he gets a
job. And so it goes. And we go, we see, was it
Anja Kravinoff and her mother, I forget her mom's
first name. They're talking more about their
plans. The art is just, it's a pretty close relationship
you got with your mom there, kid. Yeah. And we
see that whole first page, it's just an example
of Parker Luck, where, I love the thing with
Michelle, blah, blah, blah, using my stuff, white
boy, blah, blah, blah, with a note that says,
toothpaste is for earners, because Peter's having
trouble paying his rent. Then he checks his email,
there's nothing, and... or not his email, he
goes to Frontline to check his camera. All his
photos were deleted and he goes and he's getting
bitched at by Jonah and then he gets a package
in the mail and he can't afford to pay the receipts.
It all ends up with, oh yeah, he gets splashed
by a cab and then this dad carrying bratty little
so -and -so on his shoulders. The kid dumps a
cola all over Peter. Just the look in his head
is just like, I hate my life. Yeah. And then
he fights Lady Stilt Man, which... Oh god, this
is so good. Because I like that. So before I
get on with the business of heroing, please say
it again, like you really mean it. And then Lady
Stilt Man, who's like the widow of the original
Stilt Man, who I believe was killed by Punisher.
it's like to hell with you insect this is the
dawn of a new age in crime so says lady stilt
man and peter's just like thank you i needed
that i can't even say it with a straight face
you know and uh basically he's mocking her the
whole time and she's wiping out in her legs and
all that and i love that he you see a certain
pair of red gloved hands pull a sewer or manhole
cover away from the manhole and then she's a
foot goes in she's like oh my god where's the
ground and then she just starts crying spider
-man that's okay let it out the first one hurts
the most you know especially when you're defeated
by your own legs and she's like it's not funny
and then uh thank god you aren't really stilt
man otherwise you'd be singing soprano know what
i mean Yeah, that was pretty funny and then you
know you who spider -man it's Deadpool you did
this uh -huh and it basically the rest of the
issue because Yeah, it's like we're so jazz sorry
folks. We were so jazzed to do the black cap
thing and Well, it's just a downer the rest of
it well the Deadpool Issue is actually really
good overall because it's Deadpool is on a job
We don't know exactly what it is, but spider
-man spends the rest of the issue basically Trying
to stop Deadpool from carrying it out and in
there we get interspersed with some shots of
Anya Kravinoff taking out Maddie Franklin who
was she's basically Jonah's like step niece or
grand niece daughter or something but she's another
spider woman of the several that are in the Marvel
universe and she's getting beat and it's literally
blink and you miss it yeah and by the end of
it we spider -man finally gets a hold of Deadpool
in this basketball court and they get into a
yo mama contest Where then they got some good
ones. It's like yo mama so stupid She tried to
get bailout money so she could afford to pay
attention. Ooh topical Your mother's so stupid.
She thinks Cheerios are donut seeds. Yeah some
old -school salmon And then they got this one's
yo mama so fat Hank Pym had to beat her up in
the back of a Quinjet Oh too soon, man too soon
Yeah, and then spider -man's like yo mama so
ugly she made this it pulls off Deadpool's mask
He's like foul foul and he like rips the t -shirt
off of this fat guy And he pulls out what he
claims to be What he claims to have is yo mom
again a burn so bad That he says he busted out
in the fourth grade reduced the gym teacher a
marine into a quivering mass of jelly She he
never taught again the second time he brought
it out a girl's pancreas ruptured. She never
taught to be She never taught to begin with and
now she can't eat sugar You know, and it's basically
is like, okay bring it wait yo mama Beep -beep.
Oh and that's a wrap. Whoo. I can't believe I
almost hit you with my own mom again Spider -man's
like what huh? What do you mean jobs over? Aren't
you supposed to kill me? No, that was your assumption.
I never said maim kill or die He's like what
you were hired to annoy me for an hour well that
and get you away from Midtown and Then this one
one of the kids in the court is like you fool
a fool Are you you fool a poo you didn't have
no super bad mother joke? Deadpool's like I bet
you don't believe in Santa or the blackhead fairy
either kid. Come here And so he gives the yo
mama Gettin to this kid who immediately starts
bawling like Bambi's mother is dead level of
tears and Deadpool's don't worry that'll stop
in a few days I only got halfway through it but
you remember this day and you go make something
something of yourself kid and Deadpool basically
says uh no I was just paid to keep you out of
the way because there's somebody uh he It basically,
as Deadpool would say, I'm just a prawn in an
anti -spidey jambalaya that's simmering to perfection.
Which basically means, as we see by the end of
it, Deadpool was hired by Miss Kravinov to distract
Spidey while she takes, or she sets up events
that'll go into the next major Spider -Man storyline,
The Gauntlet. Yeah, she's pretty much everywhere
throughout this entire these all these issues,
but it's like well and it's been set up for a
while I mean the whole Reason or one of the main
reasons that Vince Gonzal is like Peter like
Michelle Peter's roommate is her brother One
of the main reasons he eventually broke got arrested
like he he was tired of Peter not paying rent
and then he finds out that Peter just goes and
you know he he finds a bunch of Peter's stuff
and Peter makes the lie that he stashes stuff
for Spider -Man and Vin then takes this stuff
away from Peter and gets caught up in some dirty
cops and they use this stuff to try and frame
Spidey and then by the end of it Vin basically
confesses and all these dirty cops are taken
down but he's also sent to jail you know for
his own part in it even though he didn't like
kill anybody or anything and yeah but you see
at the end of you see like Anya Corazon who was
uh the spider hero Arana but now she's spider
girl in the current marvel comics you see anti
-vetum Eddie Brock you see Maddie Franklin the
kind of the beginning of her and Anya Kravinoff
going at it and this is all leading into the
beginning of the gauntlet which is like this
epic storyline where all these classic spidey
villains are hired by Miss Craven to Help her
take out spider -man You know, but yeah, I mean
Okay, how would you risk rape? I'm guessing five
for the black cat issues, obviously Yes five
for the black cat issues for the rest of it I'd
give it a solid four for the Deadpool issue here.
But like I said aside from that look back at
Ben Reilly's, you know, a part of Ben Reilly's
life that we didn't know about before, which
handled differently. Might have wrapped or might
have made a more, uh, I would, I want to say
convincing villain, but, uh, if, if he had been
handled a little differently and he didn't have
like the giant jaw with all the teeth, you know,
it's a more, uh, If it wasn't Batman with gravel
in his throat, you know, it'd be better. Mr.
Bale, when did you get here? I'd say Raptor could
have potentially been a more, I wouldn't say
almost a sympathetic villain, just in, you know,
he was trying to prove a theory and it got away
from him and his family paid the price. You know,
it's almost a Mr. Freeze kind of origin in the
fact that, you know, he killed his family, but
he blames Spider -Man, so. Yeah. For the Black
Cat issues, I'd give it a five. For the rest
of it, I'd give it a two and a half. The Raptor
issues, I'd give, like I said, a three on the
whole. Like, it's okay, but it's mad. I'd give
it a solid four, four and a half for the Deadpool.
Like, the Ardent is kind of... Kind of quirky
in a way and it just kind of I think it kind
of works because it's Basically two of the most
motormouth characters in Marvel Comics Plus the
fact they got into a yo mama fight Yeah, and
I always love a good yo mama fight Yeah Well,
here's the thing folks I will Put the link to
our GCR Universal rating system in this post
as I will have done for Episode 61 and all this
and all that and everything else. Here's the
thing. The Black Cat stuff started out, it didn't
need, like, for me as a new reader, those issues
did not, like, reading in the trade, it was just,
okay, it started with Madame Webb. And see, that's
the other thing I don't like about the trade.
It starts with Madame Webb. We never see anything
else. Well, unless unless unless you tell me
unless maybe she continues on through the gauntlet,
because the whole point I thought was they were
there was something going on with her where people
were drugging her to show them what was going
on with Peter. Like someone was, you know, pulling
the ultimate big brother on him. And then we
go to Ben Reilly, then we go to this, then we
go to this, then we go to this. And I'm like,
oh, my God, what happened to the? One character
that I actually wanted to read in this trade.
Yeah. Because when I was looking at the trade
on the Comic Vine website here, like this is
like the return of the webcat. They use that
to sell the trade. I know. But this is like the
ongoing collection of like amazing Spider -Man
volume, whatever. Yeah. And unfortunately, like
I said, like Anya Kravinoff showed up like many
issues before. And it's been it was this really
slow burn build towards the gauntlet like where
she would show up in like a few panels and this
issue and the next issue and then her mother
showed up and Really if you didn't read the spider
-man comics leading up to these issues of amazing
Like you said you think it's something else entirely
But it's all building towards the gauntlet with
you know where they're basically kidnapping all
these spider people yeah so for me the black
cat issues gets a five which is perfect genius
in every sense of the word it succeeds in every
way to the highest extends imaginable and the
rest of it I'm sorry to say it's not even two
and a half it's gonna get a two I disliked it
two is the positives serve as a reminder to the
latent potential that was never fulfilled and
it goes on and says more and like I said it'll
you know put this link in the in the show notes
but the art i'd just i didn't like the art style
changes and like the writing style changes the
fact that cat doesn't even come back the fact
that now wasn't ask you earlier was this starts
with them doing something to madame web in the
gauntlet and past that they ever come back to
her is that just the ones not the gauntlet i
don't spoil it for you She's not that I'm going
to actually seek it out. But well the gauntlet
is basically Craven like miss Craven Had started
she's come up with like this weird Process like
Craven had like enhanced strength and speed and
agility and all that because you know he took
like these jungle jungle roots and he was like
some form of voodoo magic sort of stuff and Miss
Craven has come up with this process where she's
gonna sacrifice the life of a spider To bring
back the hunter and at one point in the story
like Anya basically straight -up prison shanks
Madame Webb and She's dying and she transfers
her power to Julia carpenter who was the original
or the second spider -woman the one with the
black and white costume in the 80s Mm -hmm that
she becomes the new Madame Webb where you know,
she can see the future and divine probabilities
and such and then So they you they kill Maddie
Franklin, she's used to resurrect I forget is
it Ali Asha like Craven's first son the Grim
Hunter who becomes like this man lion beast thing
and Then they by the end of it Madame Webb is
dead Craven is brought back because they sacrifice
Kane who basically once you cut the hair he looks
like Peter and you had Peter's mask on so they
sacrifice him and Craven comes back but it's
it was an imperfect sacrifice because it wasn't
the actual spider so now Craven can't die unless
Spider -Man Peter actually kills him by his own
hand Yeah Which is kind of a cool idea because
this is kind of one of the reasons here in Marvelous
March that I was asking people to recommend to
me one -shot stories Stuff that I can just read
You know a single story type and it'd be fine.
I wouldn't have to read everything else I wouldn't
have to read past something or whatever else
And this is why a majority of Marvelous March
stuff will either be origins or famous stories
that actually have a beginning, middle, and end
without having to read all this other stuff and
catch up. Sorry to cut you off, but it's like...
It's comics, man. It just pisses me off even
more than what the other company is doing now,
but anyway. We're going to go to a quick break,

-Man The Lie of the Black Cat. Oh, don't be bitter,
Mike. Anyway, yeah, no be bitter, please. I I
really want like we said when we talked about
the black cat issues We loved how they worked
together I would love to was there actual a black
cat series with him in it all the time Like was
there ever a series? There's been like a couple
of miniseries as I recall over the years, but
she's pretty much just been in Spidey like like
a supporting character in Spidey. I mean she
went from being like Originally she was just
Catwoman with bad luck powers and then she became
like Spider -Man's lover and then she tried she
straightened out for a while and she ran like
a detective agency and you know she would break
into places to find the straight poop on people
and you know but eventually they kind of brought
her with this whole brand new day they just brought
a lot of characters around back to the best version
of that character you know. So but yeah, she's
never carried her own series, but yeah So really
love spider -man blue all the way through. Yes
You know amazing story Just Showing you Peters
how he's dealing with the death of Gwen Simply
amazing absolutely loved it return of the black
cat love the black cat stuff the rest of the
stuff. I just I tuned it out, I read it, I understood
it, but like I said in the trade, right after
the Black Cat stories is Web of Spider -Man number
one. Now, to me, if you're gonna put a trade
together, and this is any comic book company,
if you're gonna say this collects issues 606
to 611, have those come in their sequential order
and then put... The web of Spider -Man number
one or insert name number one or number whatever
After it at the end of the book. Yeah, I mean
it's kind of like It's kind of like watching
Batman Beyond the call part two before you watch
part one you know I don't know, one of those
things just pisses me off. Alright, so coming
