Hulk, Spider -Man, Iron Man, and Wolverine, bub.
So get these web shooters ready to armor up and
pop the claws, bub. Cuz inside the pull bag,
we're hulking out for America. Fuck yeah. It's
all inside the pull bag here on the Geekcast
Radio Network. And now on with the show. Hello
and welcome to The Pole Bag. This is episode
61. This is the beginning of Marvelous March
here inside The Pole Bag on 2014. This is the
first annual Marvelous March. Hopefully every
March we will have a Marvelous March because
everybody's been asking me for more Marvel coverage
and I'm just not reading the current stuff. If
anyone has any suggestions for me for trades,
I would love to get into the... the current storyline
for Iron Man or Wolverine and the X -Men or something
like that. But yeah, so we're here inside Marvelous
March, kicking it off. Episode 61 is Captain
America and Planet Hulk. I am, of course, your
host, TF2 and Mike, and joining me is comicker
Walt Dan. Hello. How's it going, man? Pretty
good, pretty good. All right, so how we're going
to start this off is how we each came into contact
or... found out about these characters. For me
with Cap, I knew of him. I knew what he stood
for. I knew he was kind of like the Marvel version
of Superman except he didn't fly and he didn't
shoot laser beams out of his eyes. But other
than that, you know, truth, justice, American
way, Cap is pretty much the same as Superman
when it comes to the whole stance on America.
Unlike Superman, Cap was a soldier, and he had
a 70 -year coma or whatever it was, you know,
several decade coma. I first saw him as a kid.
Maybe it would have to probably be... the spider
-man 94 cartoon uh when they revived him when
they brought him out of suspended animation yes
yeah to to lead the six forgotten warriors yes
i think it was it was their knockoff of the uh
secret war uh storyline yes It wasn't that bad.
No, I know like it's a bad thing. No knock -up
and as in like it's their inter maybe knock -offs
a bad word more so their Interpretation of that.
Yeah. Yeah. So what about you with cap? When
did you first come into contact with him? Geez
I think Captain America is one of those characters
that you kind of know about even if you're not
a comic book fan. He's just an infamous character
Just pop culture wise so much for you. I think
my first Huge introduction to him probably was
with the cartoons maybe spiderman or he did pop
up in an episode of x -men With uh wolverine
there was a story of wolverine back in world
war two fighting alongside captain america So
I do remember that I think I really got into
him depth like I kind of like you had just thought
he was just like your bland type of character
nothing really interesting about him, but that
changed for me when I got into ed broodbaker's
run on captain america and about Whenever that
started a four or five and I grew to gain a new
founders back for the character when I kind of
when he redefined him in a new way and deep in
the character and Showed he was a lot more flawed
than you know your typical boy scout type of
person yes, I will say that after the spider
-man cartoon I I don't think he's I know he's
been in other stuff recently But after that,
like in the 90s, I don't think there was another
cartoon. No, there was a really bad, like direct,
VHS movie that you should not watch, which, well,
maybe watch because it's so bad. Yeah, he is
a character that couldn't really get to work
for a long time. Which is so weird since Superman
has worked almost every time they've tried something
with him. And am I wrong in making that... alliteration
between the two characters because I mean I mean
if it's not If they're not similar, then I I
don't know I mean there's certain similarities
when you look at the fact that they started around
the same time I mean they both started as proper
not propaganda pieces, but very much, you know
fighting in World War two they Were two of the
biggest names of their perspective Companies
Marvel DC when they started out though. It wasn't
Marvel back then so I do think and like you said
there's a big They are like that iconic figure
that everyone follows because they are the leader
of their respective company So I do think there's
a legitimate comparison between those characters.
But yeah With me. Okay. So after that the next
time I ran into cap was was a comedy version
of him in the superhero squad show and i really
like that i thought that was great and then after
that of course i saw uh... johnny storm become
steve rogers uh... chris evans went from being
johnny storm of fabulous fantastic four movies
but she's fabulous is a strong word we're not
going down that rattle uh... you know so uh...
you know after that he became captain america
and i read Was so surprising to me about the
original to is it was 2009 wasn't was it 2011?
God when that movie come out? Geez it came that
was 2009 Avengers came out 2012 it came out the
year before the Avengers 2011 The funniest thing
when I saw those trailers it wasn't even about
it wasn't like Chris Evans, I almost said Johnny
Storm as Captain America, wow, that's so wrong.
Chris Evans as Captain America, sure, he's there
in the trailers, but really the sad thing is
what stuck out to me was friggin' Two -Face Tommy
Lee Jones in most of those trailers. But no,
the 2011 Captain America movie was awesome. Absolutely
loved it. I'm really looking forward to the sequel
coming up this year. And that's pretty much my
exposure to the character. I've never really
had any... I've never really had any nagging
feelings of, oh, hey, I need to go read this.
Now I will say, after reading... Wade's man out
of time that I'm interested to see what brew
breaker did with the character and we will be
covering brew breakers run at some point if Not
this year in the pull bag. Maybe next year. I
don't know yet. I'll have to Look at the schedule
finagle that around or whatever else but Yeah,
so that's kept up and Hulk everybody knows Hulk.
I mean, it's it's Lou Ferrigno for Christ's sake
Yeah, I honestly think that is my first memory
of seeing the Hulk is Is the Incredible Hulk
TV series? I never watched that as a kid. Honestly,
I don't know when I first heard of Hulk It could
have geez. I don't I don't really remember honestly
Trying to think he was kind of in simply he was
in the Iron Man cartoon and I know I think he
was briefly in spider -man I don't know but yeah,
I Missed the whole new free nothing that just
wasn't in my wheelhouse as a kid It should still
be on Netflix unless they lost the contract for
that show, too You know I'll see back then it
was like Incredible Hulk greatest American hero
You know Batman reruns of the 66 Batman. It was
all kinds of superhero TV shows on back then
And for me, it was really cool seeing this guy
transform into this monstrous thing. I don't
think he was in Spider -Man. I know he was in
Iron Man, and then he actually had his own series
in 96, which, regardless of what... Our other
co -host on the pullback says, JT from Saskatoon,
I'm sorry, the 1996 Hulk series is bad. I don't
remember much of it. I just remember it being
on UPN. And I remember, like, geez, I was not
a fan. I remember, just to be honest. The only
cool thing about it is, you ever see that movie
Short Time? I have not. Oh, crap. What's the
name of that guy? um how i forget the guy that
is in that voice is lead the leader it's matt
something i forget what his last name is i'll
have to look it up later for you but i was like
hey it's the guy from short time that is so cool
um but yeah after that hulk uh there were the
the two movies 2003's crouching tiger hidden
Hulk I Will forever call that movie that I'm
sorry that that's all Hulk did in that movie
was jump For like 500 feet at a time from cliff
to cliff and all as it reminded me of was since
Ang Lee directed the damn thing Was crouching
tiger hidden dragon and then jumping around all
the time long distances and then We had the Incredible
Hulk with Edward Norton. The best part for me
about that movie is Stan Lee's cameo. Oh, the
guy drinking, yeah. That was one of his best
cameos, yeah. And then, of course, for me, again,
the comedy aspect comes out in Superhero Squad
Show, and Hulk in that is just awesome. He really
is, because they play up the dumb angle. Because
I don't think he ever turned into Bruce Banner
in that show I know there was one at one point
he got a hold of the one of the infinity fractals
and He became the Grey Hulk But I don't think
he ever turned in a banner of course The Avengers
was I don't care where anybody says Mark Ruffalo
best Hulk for me anyway like Just the best Hulk
the best Bruce Banner Just carried the character
Yeah, he surprised me a great deal. I I think
i'm on my minority, but I do actually like the
2008 incredible hulk movie um I like what ewen
orton did to that and I liked how they kind of
meshed the comic book with the old series and
they made that character a lot more in depth
than The yang ling hulk did which was just kind
of boring and like you said not much happened
Yeah, the sad thing is i'll take um I'll take
Jennifer Connelly as Betty over Liv Tyler as
Betty any day, though. Yeah, I don't disagree
with you there. So that's our history with Cap
and Hulk. What we're going to do here inside
the pull bag is we're going to take a quick break.
We're going to come back. We're going to talk
about Captain America, man out of time. And then
after that, we'll take another break and come
back and talk about Planet Hulk, because every
monster needs his own planet. Hell, Unicron was
a monstrous planet. Oh wait, you don't like Transformers.
We'll be back after this. But the Dodgers have
three men on. Here's some beans right here in
Philadelphia last time. Wouldn't the youngster
like a hit here to return the favor? He leans
in. Here's a pitch. Good morning. Or should I
say afternoon? Where am I? You're in a recovery
room in New York City. Where am I really? I'm
afraid I don't understand. The game. It's from
May 1941. I know cuz I was there I'm gonna ask
you again. Where am I? Who are you? All agents
code 13 about that little show back there, but
we thought it best to break it to you slowly.
Break what? You've been asleep, Cap, for almost
70 years. You gonna be okay? Yeah. Yeah, I just...
I had a date. All right, we are back in Captain
America, Man Out of Time, written by Mark Wade.
I really like this story. I thought it was really,
really good. So, as I said, written by Mark Wade.
Pencils and breakdowns by... Hope that's George
Molina. I hope it's not Jorge or some weird spelling
Inks and finishes Carl Kessel with Scott Hanna
on issue 3 colorist is Frank the armata I believe
The cover art was done by Brian Hitch Paul Neary
and Paul mounts Coming from someone who has not
really read a lot of cap and has only seen him
in several media things. More specifically, the
current film series with Marvel Universe. I really
like the story. I thought it was great. It completely
puts a twist on what happens in the film. Yeah,
it's very much different than the movie, of course.
And kind of what it does, it fills in the holes
of, not holes per se, but it expands upon what
happens in like avengers number four the classic
avengers line when they find captain america
and It puts like yeah that 21st century spin
on it. So it's not as like simplistic as it was
back in the day But i'm glad you liked it. I
did too as well. I I do enjoy this story. I think
it's a great introduction to captain america
like people who say like Like how can I get into
that character? I usually point them to this
graphic novel because it doesn't require you
to have any back knowledge or anything like that
you kind of pick it up and For the most part,
I mean, there are certain tie -ins and things
you may not get completely if you're, you know,
a complete unaware of Marvel. But I think for
a Captain America story, it works really well.
Yeah. And, you know, usually with tie -ins and
stuff, they, one of the editors will have a note
somewhere. Like if somebody says something that
has like a little asterisk or something next
to it, they'll, they'll have a little note thing
at the bottom of the page saying C. this title
for this issue or whatever else but no um coming
off of watching the 2011 film and reading this
i mean it was it was just like wow and first
of all i wasn't even sure when you because i
think this was one of the ones you had suggested
to me when i first was coming up with the idea
for marvelous march uh like what what stories
what single because that's kind of the point
of marvelous march is i'm not looking to do long
runs I'm not looking to do stuff where I have
to read several different comic series I want
one -shot stories and that's what this is and
I was kind of I didn't know when it was published
at the time and I was like okay and and you'll
hear coming up inside the pullback from the other
episodes that I'm not too fond of The old styles
I like this style Yeah, I'm not I'm not like
I don't disagree with you it is it's hard to
Read some of that really old classic Comic books
the writings a lot different the art is You know,
it's it is not what it is today for sure. It's
not even it has and you'll hear in the in the
upcoming Next three episodes when we talk about
Spidey Iron Man and Wolverine. It's not even
the story of the writing It's not the writing
style. It's the presentation of the book and
the colors some of the old stuff is really this
book here has several pages where There's at
least one or two pages where like like the end
of this first chapter, and I'm not skipping ahead
here Well, I kind of am but I'm not really like
when the plane blows up. Okay? And Bucky's essentially
gone. You know, that explosion in the old style
would be bright yellow, like looking into the
friggin' sunlight. and here it looks it looks
fine it looks great and it looks amazing i just
i'm not i just found out that well as we go along
through this through this spotlight i'm not a
fan of the old comics i'm sorry for you know
i'm not trying to take any anyone's enjoyment
away that is but it's like it's just not for
me i i no This guy's still alive. I slept for
70 years, sir. I think I had my fill. Then you
should be out celebrating, seeing the world.
I went under. The world was at war. I wake up,
they say we won. They didn't say what we lost.
We've made some mistakes along the way. Some
very recently. You here with a mission, sir?
I am. Trying to get me back in the world? Trying
to save it. So the beginning here, we have...
I can't believe... I didn't even expect them
to do a secret identity thing. Because Bucky
and Steve are pretty much saying, oh no, don't
say anything. It's pretty much what it is, right?
The guys don't know that he's Captain America.
Yeah... All the characters Steve Rogers secret
identity is one that's Always a little bit questionable.
Sometimes people know he's Captain America. Sometimes
they don't but in this situation I think the
reason why he's What you get with him kind of
hiding that secret identity is his reaction towards
being but his reaction towards Captain America
He's a little bit hesitant to take on that role
I don't think he is and I think it is foreshadows
kind of him trying to take up that mantle as
Captain America as a leader of the Avengers as
well. So I think it's part of it is, you know,
the secret identity portion but I think it's
morally Mostly used just to see how he has yet
to really Become the Captain America. We know
and love he's not necessarily that guy who's
ready to be the hero people want him to be Yeah
Yeah, no Guess life is a very very old magazine
because they had it back then yes caps on the
cover I didn't realize that magazines that old
so the guys that are in this unit are basically
jealous because they have to leave they get other
They get orders to go someplace else and that's
basically what they've been doing apparently
it's that's how it that's how I read into it
was that They go where they're needed and they
only stay for a short amount of time. So they're
kind of like the The traveling soldiers. Yeah,
they Captain America pretty much go wouldn't
just based upon other stories He's been in every
part of World War two from the front lines to
the Pacific to pretty much everything mostly
in Europe But yeah, he kind of is the weapon
they just drop in wherever and he takes care
of the most crucial missions typically Now, this
whole part of this with this plane, this experimental
plane, how did this become a booby trap? Who
set - like, I didn't even know - I didn't even
- I know I'm not stupid. I know I read this book.
So, how did this happen? Did the enemy just set
this up, or? This is kind of where it helps knowing
a little bit about Marvel, where the death of
Captain America - or the death, quote -unquote,
death of Captain American Bucky has been done
a lot of different ways. And this is just kind
of, it's not giving you a lot of the detail.
There's been like Baron Zemo was one of the persons
who was responsible for it. He's the guy who
set up the booby trap. There's been different
ways that they've taken care of it. And this,
they don't give you much of an explanation. You
don't know what the mission was. You just know
it kind of happened. And it doesn't really tell
you. Well, why is it a bomb? Why did it go off?
Is it a booby trap or was it just planned to
do it that way or what have you? But I think
it's just trying to Fast forward and get to that
moment. We know it's coming. So Yeah, yeah And
like I was saying earlier that explosion looks
so cool Yeah, it helps when you have more of
a color palette palette today than you do back
in the day you have more options, but When this
was first written and drawn, you know, you had
what like 12 colors eight colors you can use
So you you weren't you weren't given many options
Nope And then Thor giant man wasp and Iron Man
find Steve Rogers. Yeah, the original Avengers.
Yeah I you know, I've said this before that I've
never really been into the Avengers. The only
reason why I even know about Ant -Man or Wasp
is because of that crappy United We Stand cartoon
back in the 90s. We did not speak of that cartoon.
Actually, we did on Tooncast Beyond, I think.
I don't remember if we did or not, but yeah.
But yeah, the Avengers for me are not these characters.
It's Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor. And
of course the two assassins You know I just I
don't know they're just never a team that I was
always more into the the 90 team of the X -Men
like Wolverine Cyclops Beast Storm rogue Jean
Grey all that and I've just never gotten into
the Avengers until the films Yeah, they're a
little bit more dry than you would the X -Men
the X -Men have that alternative personality,
but you know Back when this was written back
in the 60s They were like the cream of the crop
then for the most part in the Hulk was one of
the biggest characters You know Ant -Man tanked
him. He was there but uh He's a good character
if written, right? But yeah, it's it's interesting
seeing because you think of it now people associate
the Holy Trinity of the Avengers or Thor Captain
America and Iron Man, but Iron Man didn't earn.
Sorry Captain America didn't become an Avengers
till issue number four but yeah um so so we have
them they find him in the ice and they basically
bring him back to i assume what's avengers some
some danger room in avengers mansion um and he
can't hear what they're saying and all he can
hear is himself screaming bucky And they basically
have to orientate him to the fact that he's no
longer in his time Yeah, and like true cat fashion.
He's the guy he's never he doesn't really trust
them Of course, like he's always playing the
angle trying to figure out how to get out of
the situation He's in and you get that inner
monologue of the character and how he's kind
of playing dumb in certain instances Acting like
he can't understand what's going on when he has
a better idea kind of assessing the situation.
So But I do like that transition how it goes
from one panel you're seeing Bucky Just be destroyed
in that explosion and the next cap is waking
up. It's a quick transition, but I think it works
Well, oh it does it works very very well and
the art is just spectacular The inner monologue.
I love it. I never to give blood samples to anybody
Yeah, you know like Like I said, he's using his
his knowledge and trying to find holes in their
logic and try to find out if they're telling
the truth or if in fact they're working for the
other side Yeah, I am I Love that he calls wasp
tinkerbell It just shows his age it really really
does yeah, yeah So, let's see, where do we go
from here? He So it goes from the panel where
he says I trust her and then he it seems like
he burst out of there Because he's standing in
front of the welcome to New York sign. Yeah,
that's the big issue I had with the introduction
where there is It it kind of just lacks Connection
connective tissue like you don't really have
an idea of what's really going on. It goes from
one moment to the next and there's really no
idea Well, why is he now in the streets of New
York City? There's like nothing I go like although
I like to transition between you know Bucky dying
and waking up them finding him. Yeah this Then
it kind of keeps that up, but it's it's really
muddled and messy and you're just like is this
it just doesn't make sense because Suddenly he's
in the alleyway and like wait. He was just like
in a sub in Avengers Mansion Why is he it with
that? I think I think that was where this introduction
kind of loses a little bit near the end Yeah
It really does It's a good story. It's a well
-written story, but just part of the introduction
just isn't that's It's like he time jumped, but
he didn't. So then we have Cap going after some
muggers. That shot of him with the shield with
them firing on him. That's a really cool shot.
I like that. Yeah. And you have to like the reaction
of like, why do these kids have guns and like
everyone has guns? It's a good little bit of
commentary there. Yep, and then you know This
isn't the 1940s. You don't have you're not able
to save the damsel in distress cuz she'll just
shoot your ass Yeah, she's not gonna trust the
guy in the crazy getup Yeah Not a lot of people
would I Don't know what it is about the drawing
of cat between the panel where she shoots him
and the panel where he's laying almost dead.
It looks like the artist completely changed designs
and it looks like Cap gained about 200 pounds
in his face. Like seriously, look at the left
panel where she is, where she shoots him. He
looks like he normally looks, it's a little off,
but then look at the panel next to it as he's
laying down and his face is just all swollen
up. Yeah, I think it's meant to... Show just
like agony, but it does it doesn't make look
captain It's a weird angle. So it kind of makes
Captain Hector look like he has like four chins
Yeah, and that's how we end the first chapter
with him lying dead and The second chapter and
I will say all five of these covers. I absolutely
love all five. They're they're amazingly done
Yeah camp camp has some of my favorite. There's
a lot of great ways you can go with him and uh
in covers people tend to do it like propaganda
pieces like back in the day and i do like that
so yeah i do like some of the covers they're
not my favorite cap covers but um they're well
drawn at least so uh issue two starts out with
him thinking he's back in the hospital in the
war and he wakes up into the hospital today yeah
it's one consistent thing is he you can tell
his mind isn't quite not right yet because he's
seeing images of Bucky. He still thinks he's
not really buying into the fact that it's the
future yet. And you see that little reaction
when he sees an African -American woman nurse
or doctor, and he seems she's a nurse. And then
you get that little bit of surprise when he's
like, really? Because you think of back in his
day, that would never happen. Which is kind of
a good introduction to what it gets into more
in depth later in the comic. Yeah, yeah, it really
does and then dr. Dysart apparently kept served
with his dad Yeah, a little bit of a coincidence
there, but I guess it it's you know You'll you'll
have that in comics I guess yeah, that's one
of the things I always loved about cap and Wolverine
Wolverine more so that You never went with Wolverine
you never know how old he really is You know
yeah That line that line in the original x -men
movie he could very well be older than you professor
So we have the hospital scene here which That
clears up and apparently the Avengers are looking
for him, but throughout this book he they keep
saying he's everywhere and They they're not being
able to keep up with him and this next part of
the story here Has him trying to use a payphone
local calls 25 cents. Yeah, right like they even
have those anymore And then you see a kid running
up he sees a kid running up to him he thinks
it's Bucky but it's um It's the hulk. It's the
hulk's friend rick Why did they put Rick in here?
Well, Rick Jones was a huge part of the Avengers
back in the day So, you know, that's I didn't
realize who it was at first. I'm like, why is
who is that? I couldn't really place them. But
then like Alex Rick Jones So soon as I saw the
name of like why is the Hulk's buddy around?
It's mostly because with the Hulk being part
of the Avengers that Rick Jones was there too
like he was a huge future in the comics back
in the day because it was that normal guy who
was around super beings, but And I guess it kind
of makes a good correlation between himself and
Bucky for cap anyway So I don't think there are
any other Marvel characters or that you could
probably do that with not necessarily And then
This is another thing like they go into this
diner and then You know this whole time cap is
is Assuming this is that he's dreaming that there's
none of this is real Yeah, I think that's the
thing is like he still Questions what's going
on? You think he's either thinking he's crazy.
It's a dream. It's and it's a little bit muddled
between like what know what he can assess of
the situation, but he's still really not believing
when he's in at the moment and then he flings
his shield and hits a bus and I'm like What like
did he see a super villain? What's going on here?
Because that was another thing that was kind
of weird to me that I Think it was more so because
Rick Jones was questioning if he was really Captain
America, so I think my assumption was that it
was him showing that, yeah, this is Captain America
and let me prove it, and that's what he did.
Yeah, okay. Yeah. Still, it was a little weird.
It was coming to come out of nowhere. I mean,
it would be like, it would be fine if there was
like, you know... carjacker that needed to be
stopped right next to the bus and he threw it
at the bus and it bounced off and hit the guy
like like if he was trying to stop a crime but
just Here, let me throw this shield at super
high speed. Does that prove you I'm Captain America?
That's just kind of I don't know. It's kind of
false flag for me Then the next few pages are
Rick teaching him about the internet and search
engines Yeah I'm glad they didn't really play
that for too much comedy because that's a like
a bad joke. You can easily do Well, they know
Wade didn't play it for comedy. He made it a
point for the story exactly Yeah, that's what
I like and I like that. I thought that was great
Yeah, because it's a cheap joke. You can go for
but they didn't go for that joke, which I appreciate
The biggest movie star in the world today, oh
my god, it's Will Smith Can tell how dated this
material is at this point Yeah, definitely it's
a few years old for sure Yeah So Cap Well Bucky
is talking or not Bob. I'm sorry not but Rick
is talking to cap and Rick is basically telling
you know this time of day We're better off taking
the six -string than my motors and then cap just
disappears he runs out the door and jumps off
the roof and every other thing uh yeah it doesn't
really give an explanation of like why did he
decide to finally go after the guy but you get
it shortly thereafter where which is a pretty
good moment where he finally buys into what's
really going on he doesn't think it's fake anymore
when he finds out that FDR Doing there with his
new Google search abilities He finds out that
FDR died before World War two can end and he
just thought that was too tragic for anyone to
think up of so he buys in and goes to take down
the guy who of course is an Alien, you know,
like we all are Was gonna say it would have been
a nice little not if they made the guy a scroll
Since cap is on since every time I've ever seen
cap do anything he is always the first one in
any kind like I was reading superior spider -man
and There was a point where they were going to
and it was this was his idea do an experiment
on spider -man to figure out if he's a scroll
or not and the same thing in superhero squad
show the scrolls always seem to be cap's main
kind of thing in the but uh so we get the panel
where he breaks in he finds the alien you're
you're a man from mars of course you're a man
from mars ha ha ha again he looks like he has
seven chins when he's laughing the drawing on
cap like art itself in this book is great, but
his design is not consistent at all. It changes
all the time. And I don't like that about it.
I wish they would stay consistent with it. If
you're going to make him fat, make him fat. If
you're going to make him skinny, make him skinny.
Yeah, there's I mean, there's a few poses of
Cap and a lot of him. I think a lot of it is
the angles that they're choosing, and I think
that is where it's becoming an issue. It just
it just awkward at moments and There's a lot
of images of like cap throwing and that are face
on like him in attack mode straight looking at
the audience which work but then there are some
that are just not as Good and they're almost
robbie filled ask and there's their awkwardness.
So yeah, I do agree that can sit there's a lack
of consistency there with With the drawings design.
Yeah So this Book two ends with him now believing
and I love how he sees At the end of this I love
how he sees half Bucky and half Rick That was
a cool design And of course chapter three or
book three is the The cover that we have on the
main cover of the of the trade. It's no it's
it's not right cover. I like cover two better
Yeah, I think I could see why they win it for
why they chose that for the main trade cover
because it It kind of represents the theme of
the book of man out of time. So I do I do agree
though I don't know if it's the best one, but
it's probably the best representation of what
the book is about Yeah So book three opens up
with Creepy looking Iron Man. I Don't think I've
ever seen his helmet look used like a reflection
like that I don't know if I've ever seen that
that's kind of awesome. Yeah, it's been done
before but it's still effective you know So they're
going to So now that he's like Realized this
is a dream. He's actually saying in his monologue
He's saying the one that I thought is a robot
is actually called Iron Man and they're doing
all these tests on him to find out exactly what's
going on with him yeah i mean because the big
question is how did he survive it and i like
the fact that they do kind of question that and
they're not just like oh he's he's super soldier
serum but they're they're just baffled by it
as much as we would be in that situation so yeah
I do like how they get into with the third issue
and Well, you know the he's has that relationship
with Tony Stark I should say but I like how there's
that line about how like they have no idea how
iron man got The DNA of Captain America because
it's like secret issued and stuff like that and
which is kind of funny It would have been a nice
little nod since this came out You said this
was published 2011, right? Yes. It would have
been a nice little nod to the film if Howard
Stark had had it on file for years. Yeah. Yeah,
I love his relationship with Tony. I think that's
awesome. kind of reflects what happens in Avengers
a little bit. I mean, Tony in Avengers doesn't
have all the time in the world like you do here.
to reintegrate cap but i do really like that
that it's tony that's it's the bad boy billionaire
that's you know trying to convince captain america
of all the stuff that has happened it also shows
you like how many how he kind of manipulates
him in some ways uh and and for the i guess in
his mind for the good but the the relationship
between captain america and iron man has always
been a key portion of the avengers and seeing
that introduces is effective and how he What
was interesting too is like you think oh the
thing that captain america is going to have to
adjust to the most is the Technology that he
has to deal with but for him that's pretty simple
because you think about it When he fought in
world war two he fought with namor from atlantis.
He fought with human torch, which wasn't like
a robot So like this the technology thing like
he mentions is an easy thing to get over it's
not in the the thing that's really shocking is
just the social and you know political climate
how once that's changed with it comes to like
How how integration and the segregation all that
and how that gets into that? the character and
how that impacts from the most for a positive
way and how seeing that it's that was basically
what he was fighting for and How that kind of
makes him want to stay where he's at because
he sees what he did had a purpose to it But then
he how it then kind of twist that on its head
later on Where it shows both sides, which is
I think what the I think that's really what what
makes this book work is how it uses Captain America
kind of as commentary on the progression of the
United States with since World War two and the
good as well as the bad and how They so interlock
with each other and how it's far more complex
than we then we try to emit that time So I think
that's really what makes man out of time work
is they can use captain america in an effective
way To show the progression of time and so show
what happens And ladies and gentlemen, we have
president lex luther because you never actually
stay don't at least in this first these first
two panels you don't actually see who the president
is um but he does look like a tall balding man
kind of like lex luther yeah they tend to if
marvel does this a lot if they have a current
president they depend if it's like a one -off
story or something like that sometimes they don't
completely show the president Mostly I think
I don't it could be for a few reasons But I think
it's just not to date the book to let it be a
little bit more more timeless because if you
put a president in there No matter like if you
do it during the 90s when Bush or Clinton are
president and now a few years after that that
books now suddenly dated and you've looked at
the purpose of this book, it's to It's basically
to bring Captain America into today. And then
if it's so that I think that's a smart move where
they Yeah, you can kind of guess it's who it
is obviously, but they leave it a little bit
open -ended And this one This one kind of ends
with With basically someone telling the president
that Iron Man is gonna keep a coach it's Tony
Always for I'm so used to Marvel Cinematic at
this point. I'm not used to Tony having the secret
identity anymore Yeah, yeah I'm just not I mean,
you know Robert Downey jr. Kind of threw that
out the window at the end of the first film and
it's like Going back and seeing that. Oh, yeah,
Tony Stark. He's not Iron Man Iron Man's his
bodyguard. Yay so this would kind of ends with
with tony assuring the president that iron man
will keep an eye on cap and and it ends with
cap sitting at the feet of abraham lincoln yeah
because it is that the tragedy of him wanting
to go back to his time and having the capability
to do so but knowing that there could be repercussions
and basically his soldier side has to take over
when he's given a strict order that he can't
and i think that's i think that one makes That's
one that that's what I like about Captain America
more than Superman is that Captain America has
more of a tragic tragic side to him and He has
so much weight in so much to carry But he's just
a guy. He's not a super being. He's not an alien.
He's just a normal guy. So it's it's it's difficult
He's a guy with super soldier serum in him. I
mean he's not Captain America is no Batman, you
know Batman's just a guy. Well, the super soldier
serum doesn't give him super strength It's just
he the super soldier serum all it does it It's
basically a human at the intensity of the capability
like he can like it's he's still human. He doesn't
have superpowers Um, he he is the closest thing
to a superhero without having superpowers And
the fact that he has to lead a team of a you
know, everyone on the team has more powers than
him But it's his tactical mind and his heart
and leadership that kind of make him who he is
But this shows you that you know, he doesn't
just get there. There's there's work that needs
to be done. He has to Oh, absolutely. Absolutely.
I would almost, and this might be an argument
for maybe a pullback after dark episode, I would
almost argue your point about how he's a little
bit more tragic than Superman. Superman has a
lot of weight on his shoulders. I mean, he's
the last of his kind. Well, at least until Kara
shows up, but I mean, you know. the last of a
dying planet stranger in a strange world with
new powers that sometimes he can't control and
having to constantly deal with the public and
find a way to do that and that's why obviously
Clark Kent was was uh made up but yeah um again
cover four i like it but it's still not as good
as cover two i don't know cover two just seems
to sit in my mind at this point now Yeah, I don't
disagree with you the fourth covers pretty just
you're straightforward It's kind of it's it's
just kind of doing what I did before but just
with a different background. So Yeah, nothing
very impressive. Yep. So he's in this he's going
to Arlington National Cemetery Because part of
this whole book is like you were saying he wants
to get back to his own time Because he wants
to save Bucky. That's the whole point of part
of this book And this is where he runs into Thor.
And they have a conversation. I just... I don't
know what it is about Thor, ladies and gentlemen.
I prefer him as comic relief. I prefer him in
Superhero Squad and talking really strangely
and it just... I don't know. He just doesn't
resonate with me, I guess. Don't know I like
their it their their interaction though. I think
it's a really good interaction and the colors
and the art and the rain how the rain is done
is absolutely amazing, but I I Just can't get
behind Thor. I Don't know I I what I like about
that moment is that it's basically Thor in some
ways calling out Captain America Basically, you
know if you know anything about Thor he comes
from, you know, being of, you know, the Asgard,
Asgard, that Viking mentality where dying on
the battlefield is the most glorious triumph
that you can get. And the fact that he, Captain
America wants Bucky, wants to see Bucky from
that is to Thor, you know, inconceivable because
it's like, how can you steal that from him? And
he looks at it as more of a theft of honor rather
than, you know, An act of mercy. So which is
interesting I don't think it has the effect that
you would assume it would happen Cavanaugh think
it really changes his mind at all, but it gets
into what happens it I think it softens it a
little bit, but what happens next I think it's
a little bit more even more tragic as he Meets
his former soldier or I think lead commander
In the nursing home and they and he kind of sees
the other side like I talked about He sees the
other side of what Tony Stark didn't say Tony
Stark brought out all the positive now He's in
the hospital with a former soldier kind of talking
about, you know, the negative side of what's
happened. So yeah, yeah with the general I do
like that that dichotomy of those two different
sizes and then how it that conflict that ensues
and how it how you went from feeling like oh
what he fought for was successful to like wow
the what he fought for is not happening so yeah
no I love the contrast because you don't normally
think of Tony being positive no Tony Tony's Tony's
positive don't get me wrong but you don't you
wouldn't think of him being the guy to reintegrate
Cap into society. And what I love about Tony's
character development in this story is that he
does. He does do it positively. He is trying
to save Cap from the sadness and the reality
of what actually happened. Yes, sure, we won
World War II, but we won it at a huge cost. You
know, yeah and the world that he envisioned is
not necessarily the world that they live in,
you know, there's there's the attitude in the
You know, it's a little bit more cynical. It's
You know, there's things that he could not imagine
on TV that are on television The pop culture
is not exactly what he assumed. He felt like,
you know, it's a little bit Decaying in his eyes
because it's not the pure Form of what it was
back in his day and some instances in some ways.
It's better in some ways It's worse. So I do
like how they're both on conflict like you have
they talk about like Martin Luther King and how
that was a huge moment for For cap when he saw
that speech and then he's like, well, did he
tell you what happened to that guy afterwards?
It's like, oh, yeah, he was assassinated. So
like the light and dark and like the How even
a very positive moment has negative consequences,
which I think is Key to what makes this book
work Yeah Yeah so the So he meets this nurse
because apparently the general died And he meets
the apparently she's a private care nurse she
doesn't work for the hospital Which I find that
a little strange that a private care nurse Don't
know why I find that strange, but a private care
nurse would be in a hospital with the I don't
know it's it's not gonna It's not like it's gonna
ruin my opinion of the book, but I just it's
a little nitpick that I'm like that's a little
weird But they have a conversation as to why
she's in America and she her bottom line is it's
America And then we get this Because the general
gave him this photo and then hey look hang shows
up. Oh boy At first I thought this was dr. Doom
the way is just the way that his helmet it like
in that After you turn the page where the nurse
is and the ship shows up in that first appearance
Yeah, it calls himself Kang talks about us like
we're insects. No offense wasp. Anyone recognize
him Thor giant man. No His helmet, just the way
his face looks at first, it kind of reminds me
of Doctor Doom a little bit. Yeah, I could see
that, I could see that. So the Avengers and Kang
fight, and sadly the Avengers lose. is kind of
the bottom line. Yeah, and Cap gets kind of thrown
back. He kind of gets his wish, in a way, and
he gets thrown back into his present, well, his
present abac, shortly after the end of World
War II. Yeah. You insufferable little gnat be
gone. And boom! Like, okay, so Kang is someone
who has basically traversed the time stream.
So I can see he would have powers to... to do
this now I thought at first I don't know what
I was thinking because of because of the way
they end this this part of the book I thought
this was the final part I thought this was no
no no seriously if you look in the trade and
you look at that page where the explosion happens
you turn the page you see it victory over everybody's
partying caps back Then I saw oh, hey variant
cover for number one and I'm like, okay Well,
I guess I guess that we're gonna go into a variant
cover gallery and whatever else like oh, no Here's
here's part five and the story's not over yet
Still Cover two my favorite. I I like cover five.
It's kind of cool. I don't get why Spidey's there
though. Oh That's People in the top right -hand
corner that those are the new Avengers. That's
why he's there. He's there with Luke Cage and
Yeah, okay. Yeah, I get it now So we're we're
back in 1945 and part five of this story basically
Traverses 45 and present day to tell you a combined
story of what cap is dealing with in 1945 then
how he's going to get back to save the Avengers
in the present day I kind of like this I like
this back and forth I like him going back and
becoming accustomed to what he already knew you
know he he goes to the circus luckily there were
no acrobatic families that Tony Zuko killed that
day That would be years later. So we've got this
and we travel back to the 21st century where
Kang is still wreaking havoc and the Avengers
are in trouble and someone is sending an A1 priority
alert and we travel back to Cap's time. and we
see him becoming alchemated to to what he knew
and we run into one of the one of his old buddies
not really a buddy but this guy oh my god i wanted
to punch this guy in the nuts he makes sense
and you know but oh boy yeah so we then flash
to Noonan basically said you can't change stuff
or you can't you know if you he basically says
if you fail then what more can you do his base
is basic point and and then cap somehow I don't
know how like I thought his Avengers card I thought
that was just a card I mean, I'm sure it's the
Avengers. It's Tony Stark. He's going to have
all kinds of tech in it. But where does the keyboard
come in? That's what I want to know. Yeah, it's
yeah. Well, it's you know, it's comic books.
Your key card could be a radio. You know, it's
a it's like the best master card ever, basically.
I really home without it. Yeah, it's funny. I
had the thing that kind of it's the idea of like
writing something and sending it into the future
and waiting for it to like, you know, you Writes
the letter puts it in the thing. It's like, okay
I'll send this to the future future by you know,
and then eventually they'll come back I kind
of got the ending of like bill and ted when they're
like we're talking about like everything they're
gonna do in order to yeah, and it was just a
thing that reminded me of it, but uh You know
it it worked. It's a good way to write yourself
out of that hole in order to get back Captain
what it remind yeah what what it reminded me
of though was um frequency with Jim Caviezel
and Dennis Quaid because he says okay dad put
the wallet somewhere you know in the house that
won't be disturbed for 30 years and then poof
it's there kind of like now where Cap puts this
Smart card is all as I can really call it puts
this smart card into this photograph of him that
he had signed for the general And all of a sudden
Reed Richards shows up and he's going back to
save the Avengers Yeah, Reed Richards has used
a good write -out for anyone like oh we have
this problem Reed Richards fix it and that's
pretty much all the explanation you need But
uh after all all the marvel superheroes live
in new york. I mean come on They have house parties
every weekend I know New york is the safest city
in the world for some reason, but they don't
spread themselves out very well It's not like
it's not like everybody can go to la to punish
people So Cap is back and Giant Man and Thor
and Iron Man are all going up against Kang. And
Kang is defeated this time around. Yeah, it's
Captain America. Because they're actually working
as a team instead of individuals. That's always
a key. Yep. But you know, it's Captain America.
Realize, like I said, this book is all about
Captain America coming to the realization, coming
to him. Feeling like that hero everyone wants
him to be and this is where it cultivates into
that moment and you know He ends up being the
one factor that is able to take down Kang because
he I guess he's often very under people often
underestimate him because of his human factor
But you know, he's got that never say die attitude
And I love what I love about Wade's writing in
this is he starts out with a monologue being
reports to whoever his commanding officer is.
And then it changes to a personal journal. I
love that. I think that's a really nice touch
that he realizes he no longer, okay, sure. Cap
has to maybe report to the president, but he
doesn't have to send. It's not 1945 anymore.
You don't have to send field reports to. the
president every time. So I like that it turned
into a personal journal. Overall, man out of
time. Absolutely enjoyable to read. Absolutely
loved it. I thought it was great. There are a
few nitpicks, like the non -consistency in the
design and drawing of Cap and how his, even that
closeup shot when he shows Rick. This is why
I believed that it wasn't a dream anymore and
he has a tear coming out of his right eye, even
that his facial features. It looks like the blob
is in Captain America's suit. I'm sorry. I'm
sorry. It just, I wish that the drawing on cap
was a little more consistent and it's only in
the like you were saying the angle shots like
if if bucky is sitting to his left and he's looking
at bucky sometimes his face looks like it's bludgeoning
out to you know three feet in front of him it
just it just looks weird but overall the writing
absolutely love the writing um i don't like a
few of the jump cuts in the beginning part but
i think wade kind of wade and the artist kind
of stopped that as the story went along uh Yeah,
I really I really dug it. What are your kind
of final thoughts on on man out of time? I agree
I think it gets better as with each installment
I think the third and fourth book are probably
the strong and the third and fourth issues are
probably the strongest out of all of them Just
because I think it really that's where you get
into the heart of the heart of the story Like
you mentioned the jump cut stuff in the beginning
the lack of like connected tissue Makes a little
bit hard to read and like I mentioned I think
if you don't there might be moments that you
don't have a completely Understand understanding
of if you are coming in that's completely blind
as a Marvel fan Especially with the Avengers
connections and Kang and some of the other stuff
and especially Rick Jones like we've mentioned
So but yeah, if you're looking for a cap story
to get into and you're not a big cap fan This
is one I would recommend All right, so on the
GCR Universal rating system, I'm gonna give this
four out of five stars, which is really liked
it. I have to take one star off for the inconsistency
on the art when it comes to cap. I just can't
give it a perfect on that. I just... I else just
too weird. I'll go four to five as well But I
had less issues with it to see the art more shoes
with the just the introduction of the character
in the beginning just the lack of Just the lack
of fluidity with the first two issues. So that's
what I give it four to five as well I think with
me and you'll find this out ladies and gentlemen
as marvelous March continues When I do have issues
with the art. It's not so much that I had issues
with the art as I was because as I was reading
this I was fine because I was more so paying
attention to the story. than i was the actual
art as we were flipping through it and going
through it here on the podcast that's generally
when i have when i take issue with the arts is
when i'm going back through it and looking at
it and actually paying it i pay attention to
the art when i'm reading a comic but at the same
time it's like i read the i read it all almost
like you would read a book like i pay attention
to the story first in the art We're gonna take
another quick break and we're gonna come back
and we're all gonna smash some stuff on Planet
Hulk after this. May we finally find peace All
right Next up we have planet Hulk a whole new
world of hurt Betrayed by Earth's heroes and
exiled into outer space the man monster Hulk
has landed on the distant planet Sakaar Ruled
by the tyrannical red king sold into slavery
Hulk becomes the green scar the planet's mightiest
gladiator But his new masters get more than they
bargained for when he forges a bond of a band
is it band or bond wow i can't read a bond of
brotherhood with his fellow fighters crafty insectoid
meek the horrific brood wise rockman corg shadow
wario heroine nobleborn rebel Hello and her loyal
guardsman ski Together these gladiators start
a revolution that could change the entire world
or destroy it It's savage sci -fi fantasy by
award -winning writer Greg Pak guest starring
the silver surfer Oh boy Now all as I'm seeing
when I when I see that saying guest starring
the silver surfer all as I can hear is George
Takei's voices as Galactus superhero squad show
wanting to eat some planets. I love George Takei,
he's so awesome. He's a funny dude. Alright ladies
and gentlemen, Planet Hulk is the Incredible
Hulk, issued 92 to 104. That's 12 issues. This
book is about the same size as Welcome Back Frank,
and I nearly got carpal tunnel. I'm trying to
read it all at once. So we are not going to be
going through this book page by page like we
did with Cap. It is too big. Dan and I would
be here for two hours straight if we went through
this entire thing page by page. I will say as
I'm reading it, as I was reading it, I'm like,
oh, I'm only X number of pages in. The story's
not bad. I like the story, but I... couldn't
help feeling half the time. I'm like, hey, isn't
this Warworld? Which one? Warworld. It's a DC
thing. Oh, that I don't know. Yeah, Warworld
is Mongol. And it's basically the same thing
as this. It's pitting gladiators against each
other for the crowd's approval. There have been
stories like this a million times before What's
interesting with this story? I found was what?
You know that that the heroes of Earth you know
basically exile Hulk and He finds a new planet
new friends people that actually accept him You
know so yeah, that's I mean I think yeah like
you said I mean the whole gladiator thing has
been done in many different Many different ways
being gladiator, for example, it's a common common
usage, but I think what works obviously that's
not like the the big thing here It's just really
your introduction into the world and I think
it's that's really what it's used for most is
just to get you an idea of like the hierarchy
of this world and who's on the bottom who's on
the top to control people have and I think it
is interesting to kind of put hulk in that world
like a little bit of a depowered hulk compared
to What we know but a little bit more Saying,
you know a little bit more competent. He's not
just Hulk smash. He has some intelligence to
him, but I think it starts off well because I'd
like we were mentioning the big thing here is
this it's a really long book, but this also is
creating this world before this book this world
never existed in Marvel and I think it it's cool
just seeing all these characters and seeing these
worthless world and its rules and different like
Philosophy kind of be established. I think it
great practice a wonderful job of getting that
done Yeah, he does a wonderful job of the writing.
I really dig the art there There's not I mean
unless somebody's gonna draw a hulk with us,
you know An internet smiley face. There's not
a lot I mean like I can't complain about hulk's
design versus me complaining about the inconsistency
of cap and man out of time Will say after reading
this this took me. Oh, I don't know hour and
a half two hours to read Because I'm a fairly
fast reader, but that's as fast as I could read
it It took me about two hours to read and then
I spent the next hour and 20 minutes watching
the film Ladies and gentlemen watch the movie
Well, I mean if you want like okay sure if you
want the full story read this trade But if you
want the condensed version and basic basically
for me what this book is is Hey, Hulk, we're
exiling you and then as you come to this new
planet, you're going to be sold into slavery.
Yay Not cool. I think there's a little bit more
to that too I think is it is that like Holt's
biggest tragedy is his inability to kind of find
a home in some ways and he yeah, he finds he
becomes It says that journey of that he is that
isolated hero that likes to be alone and becoming
the reluctant hero this race and how he Fits
into that world role and then how through the
progression and the tragedy then that takes place
afterwards and how You have this prophecy of
him either saving the world or also being the
person who destroys it and how that That conflict
that ensues and how he kind of does a little
bit of both maybe not under his own understanding
But yeah, I think maybe the framework is what
we've seen before. It's you know, it's that unlike
it's kind of like a almost like a bad Chuck Norris
Movie or something, you know, like the the hero
with all the power coming into the save the peasants
from the evil king It's you know, it's something
we've seen before of course, like you mentioned,
but I just oh my oh my god the little alien dude
though God, what's his name ski or scre or what's
his name? Oh crap Oh one that keeps going on
and on and on about stuff. That's with the heroes.
Yes ski She said Chuck Norris and all as I'm
thinking is the Hulk is Chuck Norris Ski is Jonathan
Brandis and in sidekicks I never I did not expect
a sidekick reference today There's always when
you have the opportunity into I what I like to
I like I like the characters I like the design
of the characters and there's so many different
versions of them and I think that to me is what
I like the most about hog is that and the thing
that really Going back and rereading this makes
me really sad is how it makes all these great
characters It establishes all these great characters
and then Marvel kind of did nothing with them
after this book It kind of ruined them all so
that's like that's my one my one worry kids right
after this book After this ends. I don't know
if you've if you've read it, but it leads right
into a whirlpool Yeah, we're a little old which
was Was a man storyline, but I did really enjoy
this one. Yeah I enjoy this story. It's interesting
to see what Hulk would act like after You know
like him being outside the Avengers him being
off of Earth when I found and I Did read this
like right not right before we've recorded the
episode but you know the the morning of the recording
before we recorded and Again, I didn't was there
any point in this that he transformed back into
Banner uh no uh no it's just hulk right yeah
again that's part of if there is a story in the
middle of it it takes up um of giant size hulk
number 15 or something like that i'm sorry yeah
giant size hulk number one and that kind of gets
into the hulk boost banner thing and why he doesn't
transform and basically banners let him take
control yeah That's why he he doesn't transform
but he also maintains his intelligence. So it
the Hulk is weird like that some that's the Sometimes
he can transform sometimes he can sometimes he's
Grey Hulk and the Hulk is gone. We talked about
training transforming Hulk has more different
versions of him than probably more than Optimus
Prime because he he has every Every time he gets
a new writer. I feel like there's new roles for
his character. So yeah and I do like the You
do like the what and a lot of ways this is like
Hulk in a John Carter type story I don't even
saw that movie, but no I Know I they couldn't
make up their mind on what the title of the movie
was gonna be yeah I mean, it's a million times
better, but yeah, it's the idea That guy coming
and saving the planet, but I just like just how
it feels like a classic sci -fi the characters
are outlandish and crazy The concepts are nuts
and I just something about the Hulk in gladiator
gear, which he doesn't need He doesn't need gladiator
gear really, but it just looks kind of badass
to me Yeah It does look really really badass
and and again what I like most about this This
is gonna sound kind of cheesy, but I like that
all the covers are bordered in green I Don't
know what like the covers themselves. They're
okay, but I don't know. They just don't really
They just don't none of them really stuck out
like stood out for me at all My favorite one
is like 94. It's which is the cover of Hulk and
he's got like the almost like the Roman classic
Roman helmet on it just it looks like a Like
that type of esching or statue. Uh, it's nothing
like fantastic It's more so the concept not necessarily
the the actual drawing itself that I really like
so But yeah, I mean I wouldn't if I wouldn't
blow up any of these covers and put them on my
wall But I do like looking at them Yeah um, I
do think though the the the giant size hulk that's
like in the middle of the graphic novel and almost
It ties into this but not that much to me. That's
probably you can kind of get rid of that. I think
that's the one thing I it just It doesn't feel
necessary it know it which is usually the case
with like giant -sized special issues They're
just kind of one -offs, but it just it's it it
gets away from the main story And it's just you're
just waiting to get through it to get back to
the story. That's actually interesting Mm -hmm.
Yep That's one of the reasons why I said Go watch
the movie everybody The reason I don't like the
movie well for one they I do though. I love a
better a bill I prefer silver surfer being the
character that that he fights with and I just
I do think it It cuts off a lot of what really
makes the movie work, but I don't I don't dislike
that movie. I think it Of most of the Marvel
DC movie. We're not sorry. Most of the Marvel
tractor dv movies aren't very good That's at
least one of the better ones for I would say
Yeah, I didn't much care for the ending though.
I liked the fact that he found a new home that
he could survive on this planet. And that's kind
of the other thing. And this is just a super
nitpick on my part, I get that. But like, they
found a planet for him that has vegetation that
doesn't have any people. Because he hulked out
and destroyed the spaceship and knocked him off
course. Sent him to scar so How is he supposed
to serve I don't I scar oxygen and carbon dioxide
Well the whole key like he can involve so he
can pretty much he can survive in space Actually,
like you can survive without oxygen for a great
deal amount of time so I mean it is convenient
that it probably has oxygen and he can breathe
but Mean it would be like it'd be a very short
comic book if he landed on a planet that was
like all lava -based And he just died it would
maybe be more realistic per se but it would not
make for a fun story. Oh My god, I can now see
Disney Marvel Star Wars crossover Hulk goes to
the Mustafa system You never know you never Star
Wars episode died featuring Marvel superheroes
would ever hear the Pat Oswald? Monologue of
what he thinks I'll do with episode 7. It's not
it's pretty hilarious if you've never listened
to it It's really funny, but it gets into that
type of idea so Anything else you wanted to talk
about with Planet Hope I liked it. I thought
it was really good other than the fact that trades
like this I think need If you're gonna have a
12 -issue trade, split it up into two parts,
people. Because, like, it was either sit in my
chair and hold this for two hours, or go lay
down and just have it in front of me, like, with
my chin sitting on the book. Because it's like,
oh my god, this thing is friggin' huge! Um, no,
I I really love the story. I thought it was really
really good. It's a nice commentary on What can
you do with the Hulk? Yeah, that's Hulk is a
limited character if not written correctly and
I think this was probably I haven't read Hulk
recently but during its time it made Hulk into
a primetime character again and showed that he
could be you could do interesting and new stories
with him because this like before that like you
can really run Run dry on Hulk story. There's
only so many you can do but I think this really
re -energized the character in a lot of ways
Which was later wasted with World of Hulk, but
that's not Greg Peck's fault, but uh That's like
probably the worst thing about Planet Hulk is
that it sets itself up Well, and it just everything
that it kind of built it gets destroyed. But
you know, that's the world of comics, I guess
And I do love, well, I didn't read, I didn't
really pay a lot of attention to the stuff that's
in the back of the book, but it's a full -on
description of Scar and some of the other stuff,
but I love the afterword by Pak, where at the
bottom he says, finally, all hail the Eye of
Anger, the King of Smash, two hands, Hoku, the
Green Scar, the Green King, the Hulk, it's his
planet we're just missing. Yes, it's a nice place
to visit but I wouldn't want to live there Overall
I liked Hulk the I liked Planet Hulk If you don't
want to you know Destroy your hand trying to
read it. I still suggest watching the movie for
a simple kind of kind of storyline for it Or
yeah, you could probably just get it in single
issues that or yeah. Oh 92 to 104 get the digital
copies. Yeah. Yeah, that's true But there wasn't
really anything with it that I don't want to
have to take a point off just because It's a
story that we've seen before But at the same
time I I almost feel that I have to because I
Swear to God you take this same story Take out
the elements for Hulk that he needs a place to
live that you know No one's gonna bother him,
and he can't hurt anybody this to me is if you
go watch is it Justice League either season one
or season two there's a two -parter called war
world and it's Superman Going to this being transported
to this world where they do nothing but fight
And that's kind of what this was for me a little
bit. Yes It has the added advantage that it's
the Hulk and that gives me a purpose and an understanding
of what the Hulk's Kind of not necessary. I know
everybody knows the damn origin You know, but
it gives me an insight into his personality and
I did like that for it at the same time At the
end of the day, I still have to give it four
out of five. I just, I feel like I've read the
story before, just the general gladiator type
of story. Well, I mean, I do agree, like the
framework, it's classic Spartacus. I mean, you
can go way back then. to the same storyline of
Discladiator that then becomes a figure for people
to rally behind. But that has really bothered
me. To me, plot is a thing that makes your story
good, then you don't have a good story, because
it's the easiest thing to do. I think what makes
a story good is your characters and everything
that makes up in between that framework, which
I think it has. I think that's the strength though.
I think this has so many great characters We
talked about some of them and especially with
a relationship between them and especially that
of seeing relationship Between Hulk and his future
wife in this story But I mean is it a story that
it's gonna be like, oh wow, this has twists and
turns I was never expecting is this something
that is completely Groundbreaking no, not necessarily
what it has issues. Like I mentioned mostly the
giant size issue I was not a big fan of it felt
very happenstance ask but I Wouldn't go ahead.
So I wouldn't give it a five out of five. It's
not perfect by any means But I go four point
five because I do I do really really like this
story It's probably my all -time favorite Hulk
stories. I'm not the biggest Hulk fan, but to
me this is Nearly the best you can do with that
character. So Yeah. All right. Well, we're gonna
take a quick break. You can hear some ads, some
other audio, and we'll come back to close the
show after this. Hulk wants Max! Hey Geekcast
listeners, do you ever listen to Punisher Body
Count and think to yourself, this show would
be awesome if it had less toilet humor and was
not about the Punisher? If so, join me, Emily
Williams, as I class up the Punisher guys on
Dane and Jake at Classy. We're like the Oprah
Book Club of comics. You'll hear us discuss famous
works like The Dark Knight Returns and The Grove,
along with graphic novels no one else is talking
about, like Blue Monday and Blankets. You can
find us at danandjakeatclassy .wordpress .com
or on iTunes. Alright, we are back, and Captain
America and the Hulk. As long as they continue
going with Chris Evans in the Marvel Cinematic
Universe and whatever future cap slash Avengers
movies they'll be doing, I'll be fine with it.
As I said at the beginning of this episode, at
some point either this year or maybe the first
few months of 2015, we will be getting to the
Brubaker run, because I am interested. After
reading Man at a Time, I'm interested to see
what Brubaker did. Now those were published,
when do you know off the top of your head? It
started around I would say 2005 2006. Okay. Okay.
It's modern good Yeah, yeah, it's very modern
it It's not that old stuff And Hulk I just I
don't know I don't know if I can read any more
Hulk comics Yeah, I don't read there's not much
Hulk I get it when you asked about Hulk This
is really the only one I could really say. Yeah
read this one. I I'm like you I I know there's
a lot of great Hulk stuff out there, but I he's
never been a character that Interested me more
so than him being a member of the Avengers. So,
you know and because that's you know, that's
what That's what makes Hulk the Hulk. I mean
that you you look at that Avengers movie And
I mean the action marvels the Avengers not that
British crap Yeah, Ralph Fiennes worst film choice
ever You know you look at Marvel's The Avengers
and what makes Hulk so great is how Ruffalo plays
Banner and how he plays him as the Hulk because
that that's you know as he says in the film the
trick about controlling the Hulk is he's always
angry and It was just really heartwarming. And
I mean come on Everybody loves the scene at the
end puny God Yeah, he stole the show in that
movie there's no doubt Yeah, he did. He really
did. I will say that Tony Stark kind of stole
it as well because I have it on me. We have a
Hulk. As far as future Hulk coverage, if people
want to comment on this episode or if people
want to email me tfg1mikeatgmail .com or send
an email to feedback at geekcastradio .com and
if you have any suggestions of Hulk stories that
you think I would like that's all well and good.
I don't think we're going to be doing any more
Hulk coverage after this. I think next year's
Marvelous March is going to have to have a fill
-in, a different Marvel hero for the first or
second slot for the spotlight, because it just
doesn't resonate with me. Kind of like Thor.
Thor doesn't really resonate with me all that
much. Unless they're you know, a comedy duo.
Or if... No, seriously. It'd be like an odd couple
waiting to happen. Well, look at Avengers. I
mean, the two of them were always going at each
other's throats, and it was funny as hell. You
know, I mean, if there are any Thor Hulk team
-ups out there... I'll give them a try if they're
comedy books. I don't think they're already on
the wrong team ups out there, but Alright, where
can the people reach you online if they want
to interact with you, sir? You can get me on
Twitter at movie revolt Facebook GCRN as well.

little bit of everything that's released on Tuesday
mornings also on GCRN so and my movie reviews
and stuff like that, so hopefully soon as We
get out of the dreads of January and February
into March and April. Good movies are actually
coming out. So that's exciting Need for speed
in the Muppets. Yay And hopefully there'll be
a crossover between those two movies and it'll
be amazing. Oh Wow, I I Just can't see animal
driving a need -for -speed car. That would be
so horrible Hilarious Yes. Yes. All right. So
coming up next in marvelous March it's gonna
be JT from Saskatoon and I talking about two
Iron Man trades armor wars and extremis So stay
tuned for that Be coming up next here inside
the pull bag make your great escape into comics
