About this Episode

Mike reviews the Clerks comic collection, a three-story book featuring characters from Kevin Smith's film. He discusses the hit-or-miss humor of the first two stories (about toy collecting and a holiday scenario) and what he thought worked better in the Julie Dwyer funeral deleted-scene adaptation. He also outlines The Pull Bag's upcoming coverage for Year 5, including plans for Eternity War, He-Man and Thundercats, Batman Beyond, I Hate Fairyland, Transformers, and extensive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coverage.

I'm not even supposed to be here today. For nearly

five years, The Pull Bag has been the GCRN's

premiere comic book review and discussion -based

podcast. I'm Jesse Rass, and if you love comics

as much as I do, then you really need to make

the great escape into comics with TFG One Mike

and the rest of the GCRN crew only inside The

Pull Bag. Welcome to The Pull Bag. Join us as

we dig out our latest comics and discuss them

with a rotating panel of the JCRN crew. So sit

back and enjoy this week's poll bag. Tune in

next week for a much better episode. For now

though, courage. He just read 37 comics on his

way to the parking lot. Try not to read any comics

on your way to the parking lot. Hello everyone,

TF2 and Mike here from the Geekcast Radio Network.

This is the pull bag episode 137 in a row, that's

right. I was gonna have somebody here with me

to do this, but sadly that's not the case. It's

been a while since I've done a solo show. Most

people will know that I've been listening to

me over the last eight years that the Geekcast

Radio Network has been online. I don't do solo

shows well. And episode 137 had been delayed

and delayed and delayed because originally I

was going to do Clerks the comic. The comic book

story, Clerks, originally the reason why I originally

bought it was because I thought it was just a

comic adaptation of the film. But it's three

individual stories, two of which are, in my personal

opinion, completely horrible. And the third is

they reveal the the deleted scene of Julie Dwyer's

funeral So yeah, not exactly what I was expecting

out of Clark's the comic at all Before I dive

too far into this I do want to thank my good

buddy Jesse Raz You guys have heard him on the

origins and he had a little bit in the comic

reactions episode we did last year. He is the

one that did the new kind of promotional intro

thingamajig that you heard at the beginning of

the podcast. Thanks so much, Jesse. You're awesome,

dude. Absolutely love you. Keep on rocking 1069

Play here in Louisville, Kentucky. As a local

morning radio show guy, folks. So, Clerks the

Comic. What can I say that isn't too overtly

negative? Well, first things first, I want to

go through the creative team on this. It is Kevin

Smith, obviously. Jim Food? I assume that's how

he says his name. Phil Hester. And Andy Parks.

So, Clerks the Comic, folks. As I said, it is

three stories. Three news stories featuring the

clerks characters, Dante Randall, Steve Davin,

Walt the fanboy, Jay and Silent Bob. It's not

what I thought it was going to be at all. As

I said a moment ago, I thought it was just going

to be a comic adaptation of the film. The first

story is all about toy collecting. And it's them

basically making fun of the toy collecting, toy

scalping, and don't get me wrong, I am not a

fan of toy scalpers whatsoever. But it's just,

it's making fun of the whole buying and selling

of toys. The second story is a holiday story

where Randall envisions that there's an apartment

for, apparently there's an apartment for rent

in between Quick Stop and RST Video. And apparently

Randall... assumes that it's horny Santa Claus

with his elves and then everything else because

Santa comes into RST and and orders all these

you know movies and whatever happy scrappy hero

pup you know they they make a reference to happy

scrappy from the film and they make several references

throughout the other stories but the first two

stories I absolutely hated them the stories I

hated I did not like the writing whatsoever It

just didn't and I've seen clerks enough times

I've seen that movie, you know, I can quote that

movie end over end over end but it's just one

of those things where I Just didn't get Maybe

it's I don't get Kevin Smith's humor at this

point in my life. I'm not sure I Can watch all

his classic movies? clerks, small rats chasing

Amy, Jay and Silent Bob, Dogma, Clerks 2, all

that stuff. But I just can't, reading these first

two stories, I absolutely cannot, just, I don't

find it funny. I mean, I laughed at certain bits

and things, but it just didn't feel like the

Clerks of old. Like, you look at the Clerks,

the animated series, that really was what clerks

could have been or should have been you look

at clerks too and i know the clerks three is

coming i don't know when i mean it's they've

been saying it's gonna come and come and come

and come and come and i know i know folks i know

exactly what i just said there but uh... apparently

uh... clerks three is gone limp so here's the

here's the thing the best story out of these

three stories is the the cutscene about Julie

Dwyer's funeral. So we actually see in this comic

what happens inside the funeral home at Julie

Dwyer's funeral. I absolutely love that. I thought

that was great. As I said a moment ago, what

I don't like about the first two stories is the

writing. The art is fantastic. I absolutely love

the art. The art has a very, very good clerk's

feel to it, to me. It's very, very cool, very

reminiscent of the black and white film, Clerks,

from 1994. Yeah. You know, so I do very much

enjoy that, but the writing and just the jokes,

I just could not get into the humor of it all.

But that third story, that here's what actually

happened in the cutscene. I thought that was

great. And they have Jay and Silent Bob actually

bookend the story. They have, you know, you...

even though they weren't in that part of the

movie they they have them introduce you to the

story and they have you that they have jane seltz

bob's uh close out that story so i thought that

was really fun and interesting is clerks the

comic something i'll ever go back and read again

no not really I wanted to read all of my ex -girlfriend

Jennifer's clerks comic that she had done up.

She actually did a clerks comic a few years ago.

It was before I met her. But I don't think I

got to read all of that. I read part of it, but

I don't think she ever sent me all the pages.

I don't know. I don't remember off the top of

my head. And she was gonna be here, but as I

said, she's my now ex -girlfriend, so... You

know, whatever. So where do I go from here? I

guess If I was gonna rate clerks the comic on

a scale of zero to five on the GCRN Universal

rating scale and I'll have the link in the in

the show notes so you guys can see what the scale

is and the explanations behind what I would probably

give this a two and a half out of five as I said,

I really enjoyed the the cutscene story about

the Julie Dwyer funeral thing, they mention T

.S. Quint, they mention Brody, they mention all

the other, all the other V .O .S .Q. characters,

but, clerks the comic on a whole, I don't think

I'll ever read it ever again. It just, oh my

god. I was twittering as I was reading this thing,

I'm like, do you guys realize the torture I'm

going, because it just was not funny to me, and

maybe I've lost that Kevin Smith sense of humor,

maybe I don't. maybe I don't really get his jokes

too much anymore I used to I used to find him

absolutely hilarious and I guess now you know

not so much so here's what's gonna be coming

up on the pull bag in the future we're back this

year our fifth year online starting March 5th

haha March 5th 2017 is year five for the pull

bag We got so much stuff going on. We got Adas,

Baron, and I that's going to be doing Eternity

War. If I can rope Optimus Solo into it, where

the three of us, Optimus Solo, myself and Adas,

Baron will be doing He -Man and Thundercats,

which is the He -Man, Thundercats. It's the next

series after Eternity War. Hopefully Steve Megatron

and I are going to be doing the 2015 Batman Beyond

series and then lead into Batman Beyond Rebirth.

I don't know if it's going to happen. Hopefully

Steve Megatron and I will be doing the Robin

Hood month. we are doing that for March because

I believe March is a five -week month. So that's

what's coming up there. Movie revolt Dan and

I, or comic revolt Dan and I I should say are

gonna do the final two issues of I Hate Fairyland

for now. So we're gonna be doing that. As far

as other content I just don't know yet folks.

I'm not sure but I can assure you the pull bag

is back for our fifth year and I am gonna be

kicking a hell of a lot of ass with comics and

getting stuff out there. We will be having a

general episode at some point for issues 19 to

22, which is the Stinger's Ark, I believe, in

the gem comic from IDW. There will be some sort

of Transformers comic coverage this year. I don't

know exactly how that's gonna play out, but I'm

playing that by ear. I do know one thing, Joe

Reed and I are gonna be back with a lot of Turtles

coverage. We've got so much Turtles stuff to

cover, so that's gonna be happening. I hope everyone

had a wonderful Christmas, is having a great

new year. Year five of the pullback. I want to

thank everybody for listening, for participating,

for taking the time out to listen to our little

comic podcast here on the GeekCast Radio Network.

I'm hoping to also have some origins episodes

and some more topical episodes this year as well.

I do have one specific Origins episode that I

hope I can get before the convention season really

kicks in again, so there's that. Just make your

greatest game in the comics, folks, and jump

inside the pull bag today. Thank you so much
