About this Episode

Mike and Beatlesdiva review the first two issues of BOOM Studios' Kennel Block Blues, a four-issue miniseries by Ryan Ferrier with art by Daniel Bayless. This prison-break story follows Oliver, a singing terrier, and his fellow inmates—both dogs and cats—as they navigate life in Jackson prison. The hosts discuss the vibrant and psychedelic artwork, the emotional gut-punch moments, and Oliver's imaginative musical numbers that contrast sharply with the darker reality of their escape attempt.

I'm Joe Kramer, composer of Mission Impossible

Rogue Nation. Your mission, should you choose

to accept it, is to listen to this podcast from

the Geekcast Radio Network. Welcome to The Pole

Bag. Join us as we dig out our latest comics

and discuss them with a rotating panel of the

GCRN crew. So sit back and enjoy this week's

Pole Bag. Hello and welcome to episode 135 of

the pull bag I am your host Dave John Mike joining

me once again is Beatles Diva the Pinkie Pie

of podcasting But this week we are not here to

talk about ponies. We're here to talk about other

animals and animals that are more anthropomorphic

than ponies, but less cute and So if anyone's

heard our interview with Ryan Ferrier, who wrote

the Dave 1 and Dave 2 series for Monkey Brain

Comics and IDW Publishing, in that he had mentioned

a series, a four -issue series, that he's doing

with Boom Studios, titled Kennel Block Blues.

If you go to the interview, he gives us just

a little bit of... a preview of what the series

is in the interview. First two issues are out.

We're here to talk about the first two issues

out of the floor. What was your initial reaction

after he told us about this and then we eventually

found and saw the, you know, the little previews

and stuff like that? Well, when he's telling

me about this, I'm like, this is so my thing.

It's got... Dog, which I, if you guys don't know,

I'm a huge fan of dogs. Love dogs. And set like

a Shawshank Redemption. I'm like, I'm in! I'm

so in. Yeah, I was sold. Yeah, I was sold. What

about you? No, I was sold too. I mean, I never

was a fan of... I wasn't a... Didn't fall either

side of the fence with the Fox show prison break

I think I've seen one episode of it But I know

the general premise of at least the first season

that the whole point is he's trying to break

out of prison so Basically how Ryan had initially

explained this to us was it's prison break with

with animals and You're right. It has a lot of

the Shawshank feel as well I just don't think

there's going to be an island in San Juan Teneo

though. That's the only thing. I don't think

we're going to see all of her. Whatever. I don't.

Whatever. Sea, say, sigh, whatever. Some Mexican

beach. What? So the main cover is Oliver strolling

through the prison yard and you see the other

characters in there as well a little bit. I love

the colors on the main cover. Oh yeah, I like

how you got, you know, the real life thing and

then his imagination. Oliver's got quite the

imagination. Cute little box interior. He has

a lot of imagination. For the creative side,

it is written by Ryan Ferrier. It is illustrated

by Daniel Bayless. Colors are done by Adam Metcalf.

It's lettered by Colin Bell. The cover was done

by Daniel Bayless, I should say, as well. There's

a variant cover as well by Nick Pitara. I love

the opening. When you go from the... from the

front cover to the to the created by page. I

just love the purple and the heat. It kind of

reminds me almost Roger Rabbit. A little bit.

Yeah. You know, with their their cartoon world,

you know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. This is pretty much

Toontown, folks. Yep. And. Oliver is this terrier

dog that he will break out into song at any given

moment. It's just too funny. It's cute, it's

adorable. Because when you read the first page

you're like, this is what I was expecting, you

know, and then yeah you realize it's off his

imagination just to make a very bad Experience

it to something like fluffy. I love it I don't

think I've and I know why they do I know why

they're doing this and I think it's a great thing

The letter as I said is Colin Bell Colin Bell

and letters I've been reading comics since 2012

full -time and I've said this before on the show

that I've been reading comics that long I don't

think I've ever seen lettering done like this

Normally you have like if you're going to do

an exclamation of something You'll have like

a red background black lettering or like a black

background with red. This is the coolest lettering

I have ever seen in a comic as far as it's always

pretty much all multicolored as he as Oliver

is singing it's it's hilarious I love the yeah

I love the the art as far as what he's seeing

in his imagination compared to the reality The

switch between those two panels is just... Oh,

I know. You're just saying, oh, wait, it's just

got dark. It got dark pretty quick. So we've

got Oliver and these other three inmates that

are coming along. And Oliver, they're all standing

in a lineup. And the first panelist sees imagination

compared to what it actually is. One of the dogs

asks him, what's the deal with your singing?

Oh, sorry, it's just this thing I do when I'm...

See, I used to watch these shows with my family

all the time. We just love them so bright and

happy and I just really miss them. I feel sorry

for Oliver for these two issues that we're reviewing.

You're just like, oh, I hope he gets back to

his family. He talks so nice about them. And

you're just like, oh, he had such a wonderful

life. So Oliver meets Cosmo. Cosmo's awesome.

Cosmo is the se - oh, god. You and your shot.

Oliver is Andy and Cosmo is Morgan Freeman. Cosmo

is red. When I first saw Cosmo, I was thinking

more like a bullkin character. Oh wow. Wait,

which version? Yeah. No, w - w - w - w - w -

w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w

- w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w -

w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w

- w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w -

w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w

- w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w - w -

w - w - w - w - w - w - w - Now he's more prime

because Cosmo is He's not He's not as goofy and

as clumsy as anime. Yeah So we have I Would love

to see I'm gonna say this right now. We're only

an issue in as far as talking about this But

I want to see this this for issue miniseries

whatever happens in issues three and four because

they're not yeah, whatever happens I want to

see this as a cartoon because holy crap. This

is awesome study You see everything that goes

on into a prison except it's it's with with animals,

you know They've got the giant shower nozzles

basically blasting them down Yeah, D lousy and

they get the clothes We're still so happy to

be there yeah, I get new shoes And poor Cosmo

His first Face palm is one of many it's gonna

happen Yeah, the mess all yeah, that's So Oliver

wants to start singing again and cause was like

not again kid we got to get to ourselves Sure,

yeah sounds good, and this is where This is where

the next song starts and you see a mixture of

his world in the real world and it is just Pretty

much yeah It all as I can say about this art

is the mixture between his his Stuff in his head

and what's actually happening. It's psychedelic

though the stuff that happens in his head the

colors Just waiting for somebody to start singing

grease lightning or something He's lost his marbles

he'll never make it dead dog walking He's loony

crazy mud hole it's perfect day here in Jackson

and Cosmo basically has to drag him away House

yeah, cuz it was a good dog And then we meet

super amazing fantastic Charlie, but they just

called Charlie We also meet Sugar, okay. No,

I was Some odd reason I wanted to call her Sally.

I Don't know why oh because of I know why I wanted

to call her. It's because of Dave's wife. That's

why Anyway different series different times robots

all that stuff robots are nowhere near this Well,

they kind of are I don't know whatever the The

kennel master things the the guards or whatever

because we don't ever really see the guards Yeah

So Oliver is pretty much saying that he you know,

he's talking to sugar he's saying he won't be

here long It's all just a bit of a mix -up really

Then we get this really awesome This by far is

the best panel the entire issue is when it goes

just the full two -page spread of the layout

of the Oh I love this two -page spread. This

is just this is so awesome It really, really

is. As we get to walk around this thing with

them, basically you get the back story that the

dogs used to rule Jackson, and then the whole

joint was their playground, and the cats were

just toys for them. We get you know our our alpha

Chester must have really ruffled some fur You

know what they say though the bigger. They are

the bigger the cheese the bigger the target So

we get that part of the story there and like

I said the just even like I Remember when I read

through this I'm like okay. We're getting I'm

getting the story. I then needed to go back and

I wanted to look at the actual floor plans. I

mean, like I said, the art in this, Bayliss does

an amazing job in the characters and the designs

and all that, but just the whole formula of the

floor plans that he uses is just so cool. See,

what I like about this page is it shows that

there's more animals just besides cats and dogs.

You got a raccoon, you got a lizard, you know.

Ron, you'll see I think that's very tongue -in

-cheek though. They put a guinea pig in prison

So we have prison yard exercise time and Oliver's

like hey fellas mind if I join? No, this is a

serious game for serious dogs, so we don't want

your singing here with us There's a special group

for mutts like you. Yeah Sorry kid So we meet

Charlie We meet two others as well We meet flubbers

and Yeah, the blind fella's frisky, that's right,

yeah. You don't say much. I think at this point

Charlie's probably gonna be the most annoying

character out of this series. Oh, I don't mind

Charlie. He's like a typical dog. He's just excited

to see a friendly face. He just wants to be a

part of everything. I like Charlie. So everybody's

running around trying to get the ball And then

we meet the cats them's the cats man Oh my god,

I Just don't know about these guys Yeah They

look pretty dangerous Oh, yeah You got the godfather

here Good old pickles So Oliver attempts to try

to get the ball back and basically We go back

to his imaginary world and the two cats he's

up against Look really vicious the panel where

one or the black cat says you say something hound

like the very next panel is is his imagination

and So he's Oliver is still singing in Jackson

we can all be free it's cats and dogs in harmony.

Oh Damn, he's out of his dog gone mind Boy So

Pickles finally stops looking like the godfather

and Basically, they tell him oh, we don't we

don't kill on an empty stomach and he whispers

something to Oliver The cats walk away He comes

back to the group and says guys pickles he wants

me to have I have to give this Oh, sorry friend

ain't our business Unless I know the better sucks

to be you. We'll see ya Or Charlie and then he

starts all resourcing it again, yep So we get

back to the cells and he eventually gives whatever

pickles gave him to Sally sugar Yeah sugar It's

serious crossover here. It's basically it's It's

Chester's dog tag. It's it's his collar So Essentially

what it said it's showing that it's showing that

the cat's got a whole chest or Not what's this

anymore? Pretty much yeah So we go back down

to chow and the chow looks rainbow like Well,

that's why he's picturing. It's basically...

Yeah, it's basically slop, but the way he's picturing

it is it's rainbow and multicolored and there's

all these multicolored bugs around him and...

I love all these bugs. Beautiful. So sugar goes

to... Face the cats She basically returns Well,

yeah, she yeah, she returns the favor and basically

says come and get it kittens and Prison fights

Yep, and the prison fight turns even more awesome

with Oliver's imagination here Yeah, it really

is I mean this The stuff in Ollie's mind is just

so Psychedelic that's the best word I can I can

use for it. It's just so crazy The page where

it's where he says it's a dance of death and

hate there's The the cats on the left the pink

one the green one and the orange one they remind

me of those Those two guys used to be on Cartoon

Network. It was the oh, you know who I'm talking

about the The ones that are on cards and stuff

the bunnies The what the hell is that oh? No,

they're really it's not I know oh my gosh What

are they called? What do they call these? It's

a it's a green bunny in a bad bunny cat rap.

It's like rabbits Yeah, oh What is it it's um?

Because I sent them I sent my mama a car and

they say anyway, so it kind of reminded me of

that And so the fight continues and Oliver is

singing throughout the whole thing Yeah, no stop

no and we have these these arm things reaching

out and I guess those are the guard like because

we had to this point to this point of the panel

where where Cosmo says I'm not ready to go we

have not seen any guards in the entire prison

we haven't seen any real authority at all it's

they just the prisoners just follow the protocol

you know they go through their daily lives up

until the point of of sugar's um obvious little

coup there and We then have these mysterious

black hands Coming out and grabbing Cosmo and

really eerie The whole the whole page the whole

all of the panels there You know they the big

panel where they you know one of the hands wraps

around his chest and one of them grabs him by

the shoulder The other one wraps around his left

arm uh and then they just kind of pull him back

and his face is then engulfed in in this yeah

but they get to his face is just frightening

and it basically ends with uh oliver saying You

know, you hear Cosmo, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, you

know, and then it's an empty mess hall with Oliver

saying, I can't stay here in Jackson. Yeah, because

everyone else just, you know, got the hell out

of touch there. Yep, absolutely. And then we...

This first issue was a hell of a ride. It really

was. Well, yeah, you got adventure. You got cuteness.

You got like, you got a psychotic. You got shanking.

I mean, it was a very good setup for a first

issue. Yeah, it was really, really awesome for

the first issue. Like I said before, I love the

art. I love the colors. The writing is really

really well, but like Dave and Dave too was my

first exposure to Ryan Ferrier as a writer so

Going from that extreme to this extreme of the

singing and all that I'm like wow Daniel Bayless

to actually be able to But what? Ryan had in

his imagination paper was awesome. Mm -hmm. Absolutely

What would you rate the first issue? I really

like the first issue I'll give it four and a

half out of five I'm gonna give it a five I have

to. I don't want to get a complete five because

like next tissue better. I know, I know, but

I don't... We've already got the first two issues,

obviously we just went through the first issue

and we're gonna go through the second issue in

a second, but I'm sorry, all four issues at this

point, if it continues to be as awesome as it

is, might get all fives from me because I found

nothing I could nitpick here. I found nothing

that I found confusing or didn't understand or

anything like that or didn't miss a beat of,

oh, hey, wait, why is that going? None of that.

Just everything about this series. They didn't

have any Westies. Yeah, one issue. One issue

in. It's just amazing. I own two Westies, so

it's just like, I want to see my voice. No, you

can't stick nuke and taser in prison And I had

to wake him up early and they need to look like

what is this crap Only thing and I getting this

is getting way off topic was since you brought

it up the daylight savings time Hate daylight

savings time during this during the spring and

summer because and now they it essentially is

nine months out of the year at this point we

get basically it we three and a half months of

No, daylight savings time now. I remember where

it used to be when I was a kid It used to be

six and six six on six off. I wish we had it

like that, but it just I prefer it to still be

dark at five, six, seven o 'clock in the morning.

And I prefer it to get dark at six, seven o 'clock

at night. It's just, it's unnatural for me to

have it still, you know, the sun shining still

on my window at 8 p .m. It's just, it's just

unnatural. But anyway, back to - Amy what? Amy

State, Arizona doesn't recognize it. Yeah. Yeah,

that's that's true all right All right, so we

have kennel block blues issue two out of four

the main cover is them crawling up the chimney

and You have different sections Yeah, I really

like this cover Yeah, this cover is awesome.

It's You have different sections of the prison

listed off in the cover solitary is under Under

where the cats are standing you've got Cell 15

block B that kind of stuff. I love that floor

plan vaping the blueprint. I love it. Yep. It's

just absolutely awesome. So we open this one

up with Oliver singing again. It's not as colorful

and bright this time though. He's really depressed.

Yeah. He's very, very depressed. thought that

this opening page was going to make an actual

design like a I don't know I thought it was gonna

make more of a design the three panels because

the way that Bayliss does the background is part

of the bottom of the first two panels is It's

like black. It's almost like stalagmites or stalactites.

I forget which is which but it's like, you know

pointy things coming down on them and they're

I just I thought it was gonna make more of an

overall like an overall like a logo or an image

or something and it just kind of does not complain

complaining about it, but I'm not gonna take

away any points for it But I just thought there

was gonna be a little bit more there to it Yeah

I like the design too. So Sally... Sugar. Oh

god. What? I don't know where you're gonna start.

I don't know. Maybe I have... What's her name?

Sally Field's stuck in my head because she voiced

a cat in Homeward Bound. Anyway. So Sugar is

is doing this this speech about about the cats

and She basically says wake up Mets. It's only

gonna get tougher with those pusses in power

She's not exactly happy with this And the blind

dog who Apparently his look gets worse and worse

throughout the series. He's a bunny. He's a bunny?

I thought he was a dog. He's a bunny. Yeah. No,

he's a bunny. That's a long way from being -

The cat's blind. No, the cat's blind. There's

a blind cat and then a bunny. Okay. But also

on this page I got a bit of the American flag

with the dog once and the prince is awesome.

yeah so basically the gist of this is sugar is

saying that you know dog dogs deserve freedom

I'm breaking out today now who's with me and

they're all just kind of silent So we then go

into the plan of how they're going to get out.

And somehow this ends up as all being a setup.

I'm going to say that now, but it essentially

is all a setup. But supposedly their old boss

Chester had left clues as to a good way to get

out of the prison, to escape. Mm -hmm, and we

learned that part of this is going by the solitary

Confinement section of the prison part of it

is Going to The the infirmary and all that stuff

and for floppers or floppers the whole left side

of his face just yikes wow he's not looking good

no so we get them going through the breakout

Charlie's causing a distraction The old cat a

friend of fluppers goes to the cats frisky yeah

frisky goes to the other cats Frisky fresh linens

on your way nice talking to you mousers reckon

it's another fine evening for you This is where

I could hear Risky voice my head I could just

picture this old man, you know, but he he's kind

of got that sweet tone, but grumpy at the same

time, you know So we get the enactment of the

plan they get out of the cells Charlie lets him

out Kind of sort of but he's still talking too

much I picture Charlie like Owen Wilson See I

I Think he's I think he's a more of like a chong

He really reminds me of Tommy Chong The thing

is he's too hyper for Tommy Tommy's really mellow

and Charlie's were excitable and you know he

looks like Tommy Chong yeah Yeah So So floppers

is is not what happens see this is the one thing

I don't get about this issue we meet these people

or We meet these other animals, Flappers and

Frisky, and we see, as I've already commented

on, that Flappers is getting worse and worse

and worse. He continually looks horrible. What

happened to him? Well, maybe we'll find out in

the next couple of issues. Maybe. I mean, you're

going to find older people in prison. You're

going to find sick people in prison. I mean,

it's just like a typical prison yard. finding

the end trial you're gonna find the clicks and

yeah no I know and I understand that I'm just

saying yeah I mean but he's his health is degenerating

over a number of pages it's not like it's almost

instance instantaneous is what I'm saying Oh,

God. Please do not tell me he was the original

Velveteen Rabbit. Oh, my gosh. I never made that

occasion short, really. Yeah, I went there, folks.

So, Flappers tells them to just go ahead and

go and just let him be and... and they like I

said they start going up the the flume there

the fire escape or whatever you want to call

it and then Oliver's imagination kicks in and

I love that panel it's so creepy cool what you

waiting for it's time Oliver and I'm like oh

my god it's a giant cat Looking like it's eating

the character and the character I I would have

to assume that Daniel Blayless did this on purpose

Bayless did this on purpose. He's got blue Mickey

Mouse pants blue pants So they start climbing

and They start going through solitary and And

They then get down into the basement where we

have the incinerator where the fireplace is this

is gonna be their way out and Sadly, it's not

gonna work that literally backfires on them Yeah,

I mean it's a good plan But Charlie forgot one

thing that needed to get them out of there He

forgot the screwdriver and They can't get out

So they then have to go back down the problem

is the fire has started But before this this

happened there was I really want people to read

this I don't know what a good way there was a

Moment that almost had me teared up. I was like,

oh my gosh, that's so sad that that happens in

this You guys need to read this because oh my

gosh, it was just heartbreaking or just like

oh that moment Oh, right in the gut, man. Right

in the fills. Yeah, cause the furnace, it's not

your run -of -the -mill furnace, it's a crematorium.

Yeah. So... And they find... No, don't think...

I know, I know, I know, I'm not going to. But...

Just... Why? One issue. Seriously, why? Because...

I know I Want people to actually read that yeah

So anyways So we get back to Oliver's imagination

as they're falling through the through the thing

here and obviously the fire is coming and they're

gonna get burned and They all fall down They

all escape with barely any fire on them Well,

I He he kind of got Yeah, little bit yeah Run

Charlie run like the wind let's hope we're faster

than the second time around So Come to find out

That as I said earlier part of this we learned

that it's all a setup Just Just no And And we

get There's a panel where Sally just started

that sugar starts going all crazy and the guards

grab her and Oliver's like can I go home now?

I know poor Oliver. He's just The The ending

is just epic I'm not gonna give it away but The

ending is yeah, that was a good ending people

really do I love that's one thing I'm we don't

want to give away as well because this was it

was a perfect ending that makes you want, where's

that third issue? You know? Yeah, exactly. I

think I might have to direct message Ryan Ferrier

and say, hey, can we get an advanced copy or

something? Because, holy, where is that third

issue? Because I'm like, wait, there's no more

until next month? What's going on? It's crazy.

yeah kennel block blues number three does not

come out until april 13th what are we gonna do

for that one that's a long time and apparently

this is according to comixology oliver faces

his demons in solitary while the prison is ravaged

by a deadly outbreak of kennel cough So yeah

Wow These first two issues the second issue pretty

much kicked our ass The first issue was a nice

real nice setup Basically introduced you to all

the characters the second issue as you've already

said basically hit you in the feels and especially

in the one moment before they start the escape

and then Oh, yeah. Wow. It's just so wrong. This

series is really, really good. This is why I'm

going to give this one a five. Because it actually...

That one part that we didn't mention that really

hit me in the fills and the ending really...

Tugged at my heartstrings and so it was just

like because of that emotion. I'm giving this

one half star more So yeah, it's awesome. Yeah

absolutely this so deserves a five and I I don't

know where They're gonna go from here. I I don't

know if Don't know if Oliver is gonna continue

to sing I assume he will since that's part of

his character and all that but Yeah, it people

if you have not checked out this series you need

to do so right now You can get the first two

issues any local comic shop probably You can

get them on comixology .com I'm sure boom studios.

You can buy them from them directly on their

websites as well most likely This might be, and

we're only two issues in, this might be my pick

for best creator -owned series of the year. The

year hasn't even started yet. I don't even know

what it looks like. You'd like to jump the gun

though. There's a lot of good things that are

coming out, but I agree, this is a really awesome

series. This series is great so far. And because

it's taking such a dark turn, as we said, inside

Oliver's imagination, it's not all bright and

shiny anymore. It's taking the elements of Jackson,

Kennel, and turning them much darker than what

they actually are in his mind. And it's an amazing

turnaround twist adventure. It really, really

is. It's really good. It's it's a fun adventure

Yeah, the good guys and the bad guys are they're

all very well -written You know, absolutely,

so we're gonna take a quick break here some ads

and some other stuff and we're gonna come back

with Final thoughts and a few predictions and

whatever else we'll be back in a moment Hey,

the force will be with you, because knowing us

is half the battle. Alright folks, we are back,

and you got any idea where this is gonna go?

My prediction is... I don't think sugar's gonna

make it out. I have a feeling when issue four

comes around, it's not gonna be a happy ending.

Just because of where it's going. I think it

might be happy for one of them. It's not gonna

be happy for most of them, so. Mean I you know

now that you you know kind of made the Shawshank

analogy I kind of do see him as Andy Dufresne,

and I kind of am hoping that he does Eventually

get to go back to his family. I would love that's

what I would love Yeah, back with his family,

but I don't think sugar is gonna make it I have

a silly just cuz she's a spitfire a little chihuahua

you know she's Her temper is gonna probably get

the best of her so I Well, there's a couple of

things I want to know I want to know Like we

kind of got a full -on confirmation here in the

first two issues But I want to know if Pickles

really did off Chester I assume he did but I

want them to say it in the book unless they're

not going to which we can just assume that they

did I need to know about these guards like these

I'm pretty sure we'll find out. I'm not too worried

about that. Because who's running this? It's

one of the things I want to know is who's running

the prison? Because if you go back and you look

at Shawshank Redemption, you had Clancy Brown

as the lead guard, basically doling out all the

wardens' handiwork and everything else. And I'm

like, yeah, we need a Clancy Brown in this. But

yeah, that's that's pretty much gonna do it for

kennel block blues issues number one and two

Coming up in episode 136 We're gonna be doing

a bunch of deviations folks In March in in the

month of March IDW is doing deviations a month

and they're taking various stories and characters

and franchises and basically Throwing them down

another alternate path the three that we're going

to be doing is Ghostbusters deviations the basic

plot around that is what if they didn't cross

the streams originally? We'll be doing transformers

deviations, what if optimus prime didn't die

and Turtles deviations Joe and I will be doing

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles deviations where

what if The shredder Actually had the turtles

working for him So those are gonna be all interesting

stories I've read the Transformers one so far

and All as I'll say about it is they need to

make an animated movie out of that Don't think

they will but they need to Where can the people
