The Pull Bag
Superior Iron Man Issues 5 Review

About this Episode
You've just jumped inside the Marvelous March
spectacular here on the pullback. This annual
spotlight on Marvel Comics characters will be
held every March. Well, this year we are a bit
late with the spotlight, but it fits in, because
we are gonna say at the end, may the 4th be with
you, as Ep 105 of the podcast will air on Star
Wars Day. For 2015, TFG1 Mike, JT from Saskatoon.
Hunnic Outcast, and Steve Megatron tackle all
new characters and storylines featuring Transformers
Classics, Avengers, and X -Men Access, Superior
Iron Man, and Star Wars comics as they have returned
to Marvel. It's an all -new, all -different Marvelous
March in its second year. It's all inside the
pullback here on the Keycast Radio Network. And
now... On with the show. Uh, Sage Orbis, is it
that time? The house party protocol, sir? Correct.
Alright folks, it is Marvelous March in April!
Yay! And as you heard last week, it was Jeremy
and I talking about Avengers and X -Men Access.
Oh, Marvel and their events. Of course, I am
TF2 and my joining me this week is Jeremy again.
Hello, sir. Hello, sir Never question ever but
one thing on this cover. Why does Tony Stark
give a Jason Todd s pose? You mean the godlike
pose on issue one? Yeah Because Tony Stark thinks
he's a god maybe I don't know. Well, the whole
point is he is superior also joining us is our
Canadian brother from the North, JT from Saskatoon.
Hello, sir. Hello, and I gotta say, this isn't
Tony Stark. It's the douche. It's his douche
-ness. Doucher. El Doucherino, if you're not
into the whole brevity thing. Yeah. So, as you
can tell, folks, we're here. We're gonna talk
about the first five issues of Superior Iron
Man. I have a huge problem with Marvel. Go on.
What don't you have a huge problem with? yeah
anyway so issue number five I wanted to because
how I've been buying these is I've been buying
them at my local comic shop and I've just been
putting the codes into Marvel's app and I've
got it synced up to comics ology so I get a digital
version so it you know at the same time of supporting
my local shop I'm also getting the digital copy
that I want, because Marvel apparently is the
only company that will put digital codes inside
their books, unlike, you know, dictators of California
and anybody else. Do you mean the Distinguished
Competition? No, not at all. The Disgusting Competition
is more like it. So issue five, and we'll get
to this in depth, but I have to bring this up
because I already said that I have a huge issue
with Marvel. Issue five. reads Tales of Superiority
featuring Superior Iron Man. It's an homage to
the old Marvel Tales kind of thing, and I'm thinking,
oh, well, that's a completely different title.
I didn't even notice when I was at my shop the
005 number in the top right hand corner, so I
never got the print issue for Superior Iron Man
number five. I have it on digital, but... JT
you know Jeremy, and I just spent the whole last
episode got two and a half hours talking about
access But what is your general opinion of the
access event? as briefly as I possibly can make
this yeah, I like the idea of You know it's a
pretty basic thing like good guys are bad bad
guys are good the world will never be same again
I like the idea of it the execution well not
totally unf - it wasn't completely flawed like
there were some mistakes here and there I - by
and large I liked it uh it's I wish we would
see something more further with uh you know Havoc
and Sabertooth I mean it's we got this entire
title devoted to the uh inverted Tony Stark here
and we've had like two issues of Uncanny Avengers
with the good Sabretooth and well, I haven't
read Uncanny X -Men in years, so I have no idea
what they're doing with Havoc. I liked it overall.
I like these kind of fifth week crossover events
sort of things. It's kind of, it has this classic
comic books vibe to it. So between Axis and Secret
Wars, we'll see what happens. Yeah, I'm not too
thrilled with them. with Secret Wars. I haven't
even read the thing yet. Obviously it isn't out
yet, but I'm just not too thrilled because because
of Secret Wars and because of Marvel destroying
their own universe, like DC does, Superior Iron
Man is one of the X titles. So I don't know.
So far I think we have solicited up to issue
either 8 or 9. I could be wrong about issue 9.
I know I saw solicitations for issues 7 and 8.
but superior iron man is going to be a short
-lived thing and honestly i'm pissed because
it shouldn't have been this is an awesome story
line i wish this i'm not saying this needs to
go on you know seven hundred issues but at least
give us forty or fifty i mean at least is so
much that you can do with this so getting into
it issue number one It has Tony Stark on the
cover in his god -like pose because he is the
superior iron man It gives you it is the tech
Messiah the master of mechanics. Yes He's loved
me for I am shiny and silver the terror that
flaps in the night. Oh wait, sorry I see I can
get that with the bridge in the background on
the cover like that. Yes. It's like there's anyone
else here Jim Cummings yeah so we open this up
we get a you know what has gone before kind of
like a previously page and it's on the sauce
again yeah Tony's on the sauce again because
he doesn't want to be turned back to being the
way he was he wants to stay the dickhead that
he used to be and this one basically starts in
San Francisco he is doing his extremis 3 .0 uh...
storyline uh... which i i think is really cool
that they've upgraded the extremist stuff to
to this point and the funny thing is after i
read this issue i was like wait a minute where
have i seen this whole you know Everybody gets
an app everybody gets for oh, yeah Kingsman duh
Not that not that other things can't use the
same plot lines, but I was like wait a minute
Where have I seen this before and also for sharp
-eyed? Fans of Iron Man that second and third
page like that splash Spread of Tony flying down
the street right away if you look back at heroes
return Iron Man number one like the first issue
post heroes reborn. That's the same shot of Like
Tony was flying through the Renaissance armor
Which was like the updated armor with the horns
that he had for that first couple years in that
title That's like almost the shot for shot Reproduction
there and I thought that was really cool to kind
of kick off this another Renaissance for Iron
Man The core creative team is Tom Taylor on writing,
the man who brought us Injustice Gods Among Us
comic, Yildre Sinar is on the art, Guru EFX is
the colorist, and a bunch of other people as
well. Mike Choi is the cover artist. I mean,
I'm really digging this. This is a fun comic
to me. I wish that they wouldn't be canceling
this. Jeremy, what were your initial impressions
on the first issue? Well, first of all, I think
that this is a kick -ass fight between She -Hulk
and the TM Abomination. This feels like classic
80s, 90s Marvel, and I do know that every now
and then we'll get motion comics. Gotta be honest,
if they made this into a motion comic series,
and they got the right voice cast, I don't know
who you can get for She -Hulk, because I know
that some people would think Tress McNeil, but
I would say it's maybe Kelly who I don't know
it's it's kind of tough but I have to be so good
that would be and I have to say it's great to
see she hulk back because I have heard of this
character and she kind of comes and goes and
people think of her as eye candy But when you
bring in somebody, especially the Abomination,
that the only time I really recall hearing of
this character was in, you know, the reboot of
the Hulk in 08 and the video game in 03. But
there's something about this battle between the
two and the conversation between Tony and She
-Hulk as they're trying to battle him. And, you
know, he's saying like, oh, T and Abomination,
that's a terrible name. And you just see like...
She hook is multitasking like she's trying to
hold down cars and talk to Tony and fight him
at the same time And I love how he just he punches
her and she goes backwards into this Wall and
she's just like oh pretty strong and you see
the facial expressions. They're not as cartoony
as I thought they would be. This is a classic
comic book battle of decades ago, and this, I
have to admit, I dig, and I wish it was a little
longer, and as I say this over and over again,
you want to take that one panel and make it into
your desktop? When Teen Abomination, and he just
has that hole, and he's about to hit Iron Man,
he knocks the head off, He gives that noise like
ra you know because as I said before Stan Lee
was always good on noises This is your typical
feels like 70s 80s type of you know Storyline
arc art and it just been cleaned up a bit. So
I have to admit I love the first five to ten
pages and especially the other panel where um
after iron man's head is decapitated you see
like the bodies are shooting at the beams and
you just see teen abomination on the floor and
you get that close -up of his face like he knows
that tony may or may not be in the suit i i just
love the artwork and the facial expressions on
abomination it's not just another character showing
up to battle there's kind of like a point to
him and it's not the i mean i know the storyline
and we'll get into this it's not the stupid Dumb
abomination from superhero squad show well now
The panel you're talking about when he knocks
Tony's head off. I was like my god. It's the
old It's the old Rockham Sockham robots commercials.
You're gonna knock his block off So as we go
along here, there's some just some amazing art
The writing is so well done. Tony's comic, like
his whole fixation of Teen Abomination, why that
name? That's a horrible name. Just absolutely
love it. And I love they had him remote piloting
the suit. Because it's kind of, I mean I know
he's done that before in the comics, but for
me it's more so a callback to Iron Man 3 than
anything else. Oh yeah, you think he's in the
suit and yeah. Yeah. Well I just love that uh,
sorry, I was just saying I love that, well that's
disorienting, just the perfectly captured WTF
look on She -Hulk's face, where she's just, the
hell's going on here? You know, and then even
teen A -bomb is, you know, what the hell, and
it's like, you're not in there, what, you think
I'd waste my time on teen abomination? It's so
crazy, it's a good suit though I mean I again
I don't read too much Iron Man But I do like
how Tony over the years has changed his suits
in a way like he's not just using You know the
Hulk Hogan red and yellow He has different ones
including like the Iron Patriot that will be
used you know later or the rescue suit and so
on so forth But I can see how he's modified each
suit, and I guess what we'll get down to eventually
is the liquid metal, per se. Which is interesting
too, like... And I'm okay with that. Tony Stark
has become the T -1000, ladies and gentlemen.
Yeah, but here's my question, because I'm not
the Iron Man Tony Stark aficionado. My question
is that, besides the color... Cuz I know they're
gonna be different suits. I know when we get
to Avengers age of Ultron the much talked about
Hulkbuster But my question is is that besides
the colors? What is the idea? It's not just a
backup suit I take it like each one becomes more
power or less before JT can expound on this in
a moment because he's more of the classic guru
than I am what I Understand is and this is basically
from the 90s Marvel cartoon Each armor has different
abilities, like the black and gold was supposed
to be for space, there was a blue and something
that was supposed to be used for underwater stuff,
and each suit used to be tailored to a certain
environment for Tony. JT, you can either confirm
or deny. Yeah, I mean, obviously when there's
like the different styled suits in the 90s, it
was more of a toyetic thing. more than anything
I mean the originally the first version of the
black and gold Iron Man suit actually came from
the Marvel mc2 line in the late 90s that gave
us like a next and you know the amazing spider
girl because that was like this basically an
Android created by Tony Stark to fill in for
him now that he had more or less retired his
Iron Man And this line, this particular colored
armor, I know in the most recent episode of Hulk
and the Agents of Smash, it's referred to as
the stealth armor. And really, this has just
kind of been his standard armor since Marvel
Now started, where they rebooted the Iron Man
series just post... Oh, what was the big crossover
just before? Not Reign, but... I forget it'll
come back to me later, but basically this has
just been his stock Iron Man suit for a while
now where he had the red and gold space armor
and Such like that, then we'll see the the silver
armor or silver white armor coming up here But
I mean to get back in the story is this I love
that You could deal with the cleanup and she
looks like what do you got somewhere better to
be and he's like Maybe Yeah, and he's like, why
are you smiling? Tony says this incredibly bucks
and blonde who in no way is going to lose her
good looks in the next couple of pages Well,
I just humiliate a stupid c -grade supervillain
save downturn on San Francisco when I'll betrothed
the depravity in the spawn the last sip of this
cocktail And I was like, oh, I think I'm gonna
like this douche Yep, and we get pepper pots
again, but this is like I don't know. I have
a mixed feeling on Pepper Potts that maybe the
movie left a bad taste in my mouth, but again,
Pepper Potts is not useless. I mean, she'll become
rescue, where she is rescued down the road. Here
she just comes off for the first couple panels
again, kind of like with the first Iron Man movie,
where it's like, oh, I'm good at taking the trash
out. Oh, what are you doing, Tony, being, you
know, douchebag playboy? She's not taking any
shit and I keep Questioning because I know from
both the comics and the movie with the continuity
She kind of takes over stark industries after
a while right like when he hits the bottom Yeah
at the currently in the Marvel Comics Like at
this point, she's kind of working with Tony,
but she's also running the company resilient
Which she and Tony started in the matte fraction?
Written Iron Man title Previa that I think two
volumes ago So she's almost on equal footing
with Tony in terms of being a corporate CEO,
but She still works with them sometimes I guess
Okay, and resilient will come up later in this
too I just love this whole story the whole aspect
of the app and and what it's doing to people
and how because Tony has created this thing it
is separated from those who can afford it to
those who can't and it's just a crazy idea I
just I just I just love how everyone like what
like moving the story along like she Pepper goes
to Tago's like you're drinking again what's with
the suit and it's basically symbiot armor and
she's like yeah that couldn't possibly end well
and then you go and you see what happens to see
that there are roving gangs of beautiful people
beating up you know hobos and homeless people
because all of a sudden this it's like with great
power comes great irresponsibility because all
of a sudden you're a supermodel so of course
everyone else is ugly and you want all the imperfections
out of your city And just as Daredevil's about
to lay the smackdown on him, everyone reverts.
And you find out... You find that in this issue
alone, the biggest example of douchebaggery that
Tony Stark has done thus far, not only has people
only had Extremis for a day, it's $100 a day
to renew this. You glorious, magnificent bastard!
This is... Good good number 12 looks just like
you. It's a great Twilight Zone episode in the
fifth season where Everybody male and female
have to look like number 8 or number 12 and it's
mandatory I think by your 21st birthday So you
have 15 people that either look like the same
guy who looks like number 8 or the other it looks
like number 2 and the same thing with the women
and the problem is is That it's free and you
have to think like number 8, or you have to think
like number 12. Here, you get an app for Extremis,
and I think we all know how bad that is, if you
remember that storyline. Well, it did fix Bruce
Banner when he had the brain damage from getting
shot, so... Yes, but there's still side effects,
and side effects, as we know, could also cause
spontaneous combustion. But here's the thing,
though. Even for $100, and I understand what
Tony's trying to do, but I do like the conversation
again with Pepper. Like, she just, she understands
what the consequences are. I just find it odd
that you have to get an app to get something
that may or may not fix you, but the side effects
still have, may or may not have been tested,
and we just see people melting. Or, you know,
we see it, it's not gonna be like with Iron Man
3, but they're still melting regardless, and
they're still having... like these little breakdowns,
and it's a bunch of people. I don't know how
I would feel about if this app was out in real
life. Now, maybe 100 years from now if they perfected
it, but still, I don't know how comfortable I
would be with an app. An app for everything.
But I'm still kind of curious, even though they
explain it in comic book logic, in REL life,
I don't know how you're supposed to, is it supposed
to be bio, what is it? biometric or bi -organic
yeah that's it bi -organic like you just touch
it like because i know with the iphone you can
do touch id and then it goes into your dna and
that's how it works and in or is that what they're
trying to say yeah well i mean the extremists
in like the original war and l story is it basically
it hacks the body's you know firmware you know,
like everything that makes us blink and breathe
and our pulse go and all that. And this is essentially
a refined or low rent version of this, because
I mean, yeah, everyone, it's not so much everyone
melts. It's just all of a sudden, you know, you
look in the one chick in the green bikini. I
mean, she was like this Buxom supermodel two
pages ago. And now all of a sudden, the cellulite
comes out of freaking nowhere. you know, and
everyone's ugly again, and Tony's like, what,
you think I was just gonna do this for free?
Yeah, this is nothing new, and this also, this
actually even is based on a 50s Tales from the
Crypt comics story where they use, um, ambergris,
and they're not experimenting and people melt
to skeletons. So, it's not a new take, but I
do like the 21st century feel on it. As the issue
ends we see a Man of mystery who at first I thought
was daredevil because of the red eye and the
pointy ears And then I'm like oh wait. No, it's
Batman, but they would never do that Does this
look like Marvel versus DC to you? Indeed and
then it's the classic The suit of armor I forget
what iterations is designated as but this is
basically the suit of armor post the nose and
roller blades because roller blades are cool
and At first like well, we'll see who this is
later on in the series at first I was laying
money that this is the AI Jarvis that pepper
had in the rescue armor or a new variation of
this or it was Homer or something like that you
know that's they've planned for this apparently
oh bump bump bum overall the first issue I absolutely
loved it it pulled me into the series the comedy
between Tony and Teen Abomination and She -Hulk
and the stuff with Pepper I really really dug
it it's this is a Tony Stark I want to be reading
Well, I'm impressed. Yes. I love this. I if you've
never had Iron Man before this is a great if
you know to the series Yeah, no, I enjoyed it.
It's I it's not a tone not to completely just
come what you guys said. It's not that I Don't
want to read This type of Tony sir. I want to
read this story. Yes. It's just not Specifically
do I want to read? You know, it's just that I
can only take so much douchebaggery at a time
Well, I mean he is being a douche But he you
know and we don't know the full extent of what
it's you know She pepper alludes to it the first
issue of of the consequences of extremis 3 .0
And we don't know what that is at this point
and I'm sure Tony knows in the back of his mind,
but Just reading an iron man that for me is similar
to what I know Robert Downey jr. Is done in the
movies. It's like oh, this is so friggin cool
It really is With issue two we start off with
daredevil versus iron man I Love how they set
this up because you have in the first issue you
have one previously page So that gets you hooked
that gets you caught up the first issue gets
you Set on reading this if you're gonna read
it or not the second issue You don't need a previously
page. It opens up with the Extremis 3 .0 thing
with B Superior, and it gives you a little blurb
of what's gone on already, and it gives you the
creative listing and all that stuff. I absolutely
love that. And as we get into this, we start
with Daredevil. Well, I love the cover, first
of all, is the Iron Man's, like, talk to the
hand and blasting DD in the face. And then if
you look in the bottom half, they're basically
fighting on top of an Like a vision chart you
you would see it your optometrist Yeah, I love
that and as we get in you got the recap page
which and I got to say I kind of like the extremist
three Logo icon thing. I think that's kind of
cool Yeah, just from an aesthetic taste you see
We open with daredevil busting up a robbery and
him talking about how the kids more scared than
the woman he's mugging and I was like If this
is what an average dude looks like in San Francisco
Then why in the hell does he need extremists?
Because I mean for on the surface the kid doesn't
look like he's that homely, you know Are you
just desperate to have a pro wrestler's body
or something? Like why would if you look like
a normal guy, you're that unhappy in your own
life that sort of thing But the best part of
this is the vengeance that the would -be muggy
takes Where she takes this picture you see this
I'm internet famous and this is gonna be a lot
in 30 seconds you meh And you're like your life
is over. He's like no Internet fame no It's like
dude deal with it. I mean It felt like kick -ass
for some reason. I don't know. There's a lot
of deja vu as well, especially Like I've been
down this road before why was I? Oh, yeah kick
-ass, but again, this has done a lot better even
the cover and JT you picked this up a lot faster
than I did because for Five seconds. I was like,
oh, wait a second. You're right. It's a vision
shot But I also recall and this is nothing new
they have fought before I think in the 90s for
some reason there were a lot of these versus
titles so I like the call back there but as for
this fight between you know daredevil and the
kid and going on the phone it's tighter but yet
i i i feel that was it really necessary because
we already had iron daredevil discussed in the
last issue so i'm kind of and the other thing
is this is a revamp of dark industries well at
least for me i don't know why it looks like starship
enterprise for some reason. I mean, you can see
the top of it, it definitely looks like... Yeah,
that's probably just an homage. I mean, they're
just trying to create a cool -looking building,
but I mean, we haven't really mentioned this
yet so far, but what do you guys think of having
Iron Man set in San Francisco instead of New
York? I'm looking, you know what? I'm surprised
they didn't do this in China. I mean... It seems
like for Tony in New York, I think what it comes
down to, everything media -wise is in New York,
whether it be movies or comics. It's either New
York or San Francisco. And I think it goes back
to the old days in comics, where it used to be
New York or Los Angeles for DC Marvel. And then
I guess they wanted to move everything around
when they started to have like, you know, the
East Coast Avengers and the West Coast Avengers.
They've always done this, but I think with New
York now they're trying to promote other cities
for demographic purposes. And not to mention
the fact that since Tony is a tech guru, I've
noticed that there are more tech gurus right
now on the West side. So I figured, okay, well,
you know, we won't make Tony so much Steve Jobs
per se, but I can kind of see where they're kind
of going with that. Yeah, he's an evil Steve
jobs Yeah, it's like I'm waiting for him to go
into stark industries and go like you know what
cuz I know like an adventures He goes like well,
it's like Christmas, but only more me I was almost
waiting for him to go like from Transformers
age of extinction age of extinction and walk
into stark industries and go like what does that
sound I wanted to sound more Futuristic so I
guess that's what they're trying Tony's Tony
might be a dick, but he's not That much of a
dick? Well, he made an app for $100 for Extremis
3 .0, so... No, I know. Well, he wants to make
money off of it, but I mean, as far as, like,
I don't, like... Him wanting to see his name
in lights and all this and all that and everything
else, yeah, sure, but as far as a sound effect...
He's not... He's no Stanley Tucci dick. I'm just
looking at this the new stark tower on Alcatraz
Island no less I love there's just this giant
dome over top the prison You know and it doesn't
look like that thing is too structurally stable.
Just just looking at it It doesn't like I'm sure
it is. It's just The hell is this thing? You
know and then you get daredevils coming in trying
to you know Tell Stark, you know, I'm shutting
you down and Stark is like, yeah, nothing doing
and just casually throws Daredevil off the tower
and Daredevil's pissed and he goes back into
the party He's like, you know for a guy with
called a man without fear as he was falling through
the air He looked just a little bit worried Yeah
and then sorry It's definitely great artwork
when daredevil is going down in the water. I
mean, I love the ripple effects and everything
I love the background colors on this one. Oh,
yeah, and he goes in he's basically he's like
once again He's gonna hook people with extremists
now at this point I'm looking at this crowd is
this people have paid for extremists or are these
just the beautiful people who were there to party
because You know for partying sake like how many
of these people are cadet or Kardashian basically?
and Tony says he's gonna be on Castro Street
tomorrow and he's gonna be basically a traveling
wireless extremist hub so you can download it
and basically we meet the father of the kid who
tried to jack that lady up in the beginning of
the issue and he's like ready to you know do
what for to Tony Stark and Tony literally takes
one in the face yeah That is an awesome image
it just is and everyone's just like I love how
it's not security guards It's not the police.
It's all these tattooed well -coif 30 -something
hipster douches and while we're using that word
a lot today that take this guy down and Tony
flies him up into the thing and He basically
He what do you Basically extorts or blackmails
this guy into using extremis Pretty much. Yeah.
Yeah, I I love this is that this is not the Tony
Stark that we're used to or at least the one
I'm not used to But yeah, he describes this guy
and says you want to shoot me in the head. I'm
okay with that But bashing my product is something
I can't allow and I can hear Robert Downey's
Joe Robbie Downey jr.'s voice while it's because
I get But the thing is, is that I can understand
for likeness rights, they can't make him look
like Robert Downey Jr., and that's a shame. But
he kind of does. I mean... To a degree. To a
degree. To a degree, he does. I mean, and honestly,
why can't they? But it doesn't matter. He's already
Iron Man. He's already working for Marvel. So
why can't they use his likeness? Well, that's
a whole marketing... you know likeness rates
and the thing is Tony Stark used to just be like
mustache and some hair and then in the 90s you
know they gave him the goatee and that's kind
of been the default Tony Stark look so you know
it's kind of a chicken or egg thing whereas Tony
Stark looks like rdj rdj looks like Tony Stark
you know it's it's it's neither here nor there
It doesn't matter really because to me when I
look at the art in this issue when I look at
the art in this series I see our DJ and I hear
him in my head when I'm reading the book I certainly
do think of our DJ when I think of Iron Man,
but honestly in reading this Who's the guy voiced
Iron Man in EMH Eric Loomis I Hear I hear like
Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes Tony Stark
here Because there's something Lewis's voice
I think at least this version of Tony Stark I
hear that a lot more and we see you know, so
he basically threatens to like completely and
To quote Ving Rhames in pulp fiction go medieval
on his son's future Like he'll make it worse
and they go back you see daredevils like oh,
this is so wrong And you see what a Tony Stark
part there ain't no party like a Tony Tart Tony
Stark party because the Tony Stark party don't
stop until everyone passes out from alcohol poisoning
or until Daredevil comes in well I know this
looks like the aftermath of that party in Animal
House that he's you know, there's bodies everywhere
he Dopes Tony Stark and I love The worry we're
daredevil Jack. He kidnaps Tony Stark and the
blonde wakes up And it's like, it's a team up.
We do these. And she's like, OK. And I flashed
to that scene in Die Another Day where Pierce
Brosnan breaks into the British jerk's room and
decks him out. And then there's just this hot
Cuban babe. And he's like, hola. And she's like,
buenos dias. It's like she's seen this shit before.
Then so we get a really cool couple of pages
with daredevil and iron man and daredevils detective
vision Yeah, very very cool. You know it really
reminds me as we're looking at this if you look
on the second page where we're where Daredevil
says, don't try that again if you look at that
little panel right there. It kind of reminds
me of when Megatron became Galvatron in Transformers
the movie as far as the lines on Tony's. Oh yeah,
yeah. It looks so cool. That is pretty good.
And I love how Daredevil is basically smacking
Tony around with Deep Underground, you know,
your armor isn't coming for you. He's trying
to figure out like what the deal is with Tony
because I mean he's known Tony for years and
then Tony gets this great Evil villain smile
and then you got like the evil overlord glowing
red eyes And I love it's kind of subtle I didn't
notice this until I was rereading these issues
in preparation for this is that the repulsive
nodes And like a couple of volumes ago Tony start
doing this with his armor where he had like several
little repulsor nodes built into his armors that
they go from the the blue white to red Yeah And
then we have him, you know suit up and that is
a really creepy image where he's standing over
daredevil and You know the the the armor is basically
gooping on to him And it looks like he just hits
him with like the mother of all taser blasts
Daredevil wakes up and he can see yeah that was
awesome like when I first read that I'm like
oh my god no they didn't just do that but that
is so awesome it would make sense because if
it's symbiont at least that's what it says it's
symbiote bio it's bio grand bio organic If daredevils
origins because I don't know if there is a superior
daredevil, but if the origins are what they were
Originally where he became blind because of toxic
waste. I mean that was pretty much it right toxic
waste radioactive waste. Yeah like that Okay,
it would explain how he became blind you guys
powers now that Tony hit him with this gazer
beam I'm kind of wondering because, you know,
I don't want to spoil what we get for the next
three issues. What happens next? Will he lose
his keen powers? Will they kiss and make up?
We don't really know. It was a great cliffhanger
and I guess... I'm really concerned how there
wasn't so much internet buzz on Daredevil's scene
again, especially since they're trying to reboot
the character and they have this show supposedly
on Netflix. You would think this would be a great
meme or people going on the interweb and bitching
and complaining about, oh, Daredevil can see
again. No, nobody really talked about this. And
it's not like this is the first time they've
done this to Daredevil in the comics. They had
a... Previous to Heroes Reborn, they had a, or
not Heroes Reborn, previous to them rebooting
Daredevil under the Marvel Knights banner, they
had a storyline where he was operated on by S
.H .I .E .L .D. and they basically restored his
sight for him to go undercover in this mission
for a while. So it's happened before and I don't
know why Daredevil's surprised because at this
point it's just like, oh Jesus, what is this,
Thursday? Because it's happened before, it'll
happen again. Yeah, it it is one of those things.
I don't know. I mean, I don't you know To me
daredevil seeing again me knowing now that this
is going to be a quote unquote limited series
since it got axed I don't really mind it. Yeah,
there could have been a little bit more internet
buzz, but since You know, Marvel is the one,
I mean, it's not like Fox is doing the Daredevil
series on Netflix. It's Marvel, so I'm sure that
they felt, oh, we can do this, but it's not gonna
last, but we can do it. And it even happens,
you know, in the next issue. Specifically speaking
about the second issue, what do you guys feel,
final thoughts on number two? Jeremy? I think
it's a solid issue, and it's definitely a great
step forward in terms of the story. Oh, absolutely.
Well number two is not a number two. I mean I
have to admit I was scared going into this series
It's tight writing and it doesn't stink up the
room and it has a great cliffhanger to boot and
again as I said if you have not picked up a daredevil
comic or an Iron Man comic in years and Continuity
is all over and with reboots and what -have -you
It's understandable this one though. I have to
say it's probably one of the smartest five -issue
series of anything that I've read in Marvel right
now, and this is probably a lot better. Well,
it is. I mean, there's so much Iron Man out there
and Daredevil out there, and to me, if you're
gonna put the most egotistical, douchiest guy
that has everything in the world up against somebody
who comes from Hell's Kitchen and has lost a
lot but ironically gained something, then...
this team -up make or whatever you want to call
it between Daredevil and Iron Man still makes
sense. Absolutely. For me, again, absolutely
loving the story, loving the art. The whole evolution
of the characters within this storyline is great.
For issue three, the cover, this is the best
cover out of them all so far. I swear to God
I've seen this on a movie poster somewhere and
It's killing me not to... They live? Yes! They
live. It's gotta be they live. Yeah, that's exactly
it. John Carpenter's They Live. You're either
gonna wear these sunglasses or you're gonna start
eating that trash can. You're right. And you
figure, like, a 20 -minute battle between these
two, you know, there's a legend that there is
an old 40s comic between, I think, um... Johnny
Storm and the Submariner, where I think it was
supposed to be 40 or 50 pages of a slugfest.
I was kind of hoping when I saw this cover, we
would get like this double or triple issue of
just Tony and Daredevil fighting. Because as
soon as I saw that with the sunglasses and everything,
don't get it, but I still think it's a great
cover and a great homage. Yeah. No, that's definitely
and I love like how they got the binary code
in the background like that Because that's like
maybe that's what daredevils see in with that
because we find out as we open the issue is Tony's
He's basically dose daredevil with a low rent
version of extremis So his eyes will work temporarily
and I love the line. Hi, you're a lucky man Matt
Murdock You get to see again and this is the
first face you get to see You know for some odd
reason For some odd reason I don't know why but
It's like the Miz versus Mizdow When I read that
line it's like wow you are so arrogant Tony and
it's awesome This is vanity Smurf more or less,
but yeah, I mean I like the idea that he's trying
to create a special brand of sunglasses to counter
the effects of the extremists. But again, it's
this is a side of Tony that would work in Iron
Man 1, and this is what I was kind of hoping
Iron Man 1 would be. But yeah, the designs with
Daredevil again. Oh, I can see and what are you
going to do? And we get the facial expressions
and the back and forth banter. I do like how
Tony tries to offer Daredevil a drink and of
course Daredevil just smacks it out of his hand
and we see like the shards of glass and the reflections
between the two of what they're gonna do and
how they're not going to work together and they're
broken apart. I get that symbolism. But what
does Tony do? Tony does what he does best. He
just puts on the shades, acts cool, but then
when he takes them off it's kind of like there's
Clark Kent and there's Superman and we can start
to see him like he just tosses them away He just
starts getting madder and madder and we can just
see like the close -ups the showing of the teeth
the messed -up hair You can tell it's on Yeah,
and I mean I love that that whole thing where
You know, he's like, what are you what gives
you the right to play God and he's like I'm not
playing God I've been playing human and just
how it's like that the the idea of him taking
off the sunglasses and you get like the red -eye
Tony again like that and it's actually kind of
a little chilling because you think about it
this is Tony's usually this kind of happy -go
-lucky sarcastic, you know sob and now he's like
this Like this villain who's just finally, you
know what? The I feel bad. I can't come up with
a better analogy. This is like tantamount to
like I've had it with these mother effing snakes
on these mother effing plane moments like where
he's He's fighting he's tired of all the bullshit
that he's had to put up with from other people
He's like, you know what? This isn't your world.
This is mine kind of Declarative statement only
he's not an ungrateful, you know about it But
I have a question then is this Tony talking or
the Simba night talking? Well, I've looked up
on this like he's taken some building blocks
from a symbiote but I don't think it's to the
extent that He's gonna start talking in the third
person referring to him in the suit as we or
anything. It's He's been around enough and I
mean, this is Tony Stark like it's still Tony
Stark. It's just his attitude has changed so
He's seen what happened. He's seen the work he's
put in to help Flash Thompson control the symbiote,
which has since been undone and then corrected
in the current run of Guardians. So it's just
he's pissed off that, you know, he's going to
do things his way and to hell with you and everyone
else. And then we get to Pepper and the still
not named. Let's just call him Hornhead. It's
because he's sitting there and you see that he's
basically going back over. There's elements of,
you know, the Watcher from Original Sin and the
Electroscroll from Secret Invasion. He's basically
the armor's catching up and trying to figure
out how everything's connected. And at this point,
it's either Jarvis or I'm thinking this is yet
another backup of Tony Stark or some AI of some
sort for sure. And you see, they look at some
of the tweets and... Regarding to the extremists
here. It's like, you know, I can't afford extremists
anymore. Hashtag it hurts Can anybody hook me
up with hashtag extremists until payday will
do anything? Food or extremists starts world
problem. I mean Like what the f Tony Yeah, it's
a little crazy and then it goes back to him and
daredevil and he's like like literally where
he's yelling at daredevil he's like oh wait a
second got to take this call and apparently teen
a bomb has uh broken out of uh shield prison
yeah well to be fair it's actually tween abomination
because we find that he's 13 yeah and i like
the idea well here's the thing though i like
this because on one hand i was also gonna roll
my eyes and punch my you know the walls and everything
but then when you start to see the facial expressions
that's pretty pretty much as you know summing
up all these characters he i guess is trying
i guess it's supposed to be like a hulk um tony
stark type of relationship because we know the
relationship between those two so instead of
having i don't know if there is a teen hulk and
i don't want to know if there's a teen hulk i
know there's so many other hulks we talked about
that mike i don't you know yeah but as for the
tween abomination yeah he asked for help and
I love how Tony responds and only Tony can he's
like oh this is how you ask for help destroying
things you're a giant green ball of puberty and
anger of course this is how you ask for help
and he's like okay I'll talk to shield and I
could still use a man like you and everything
seems to be okay but I do love the facial expressions
when Tony's trying to ask Tween abomination how
old he is and he's like well mold enough and
you can see like he's Sucking in his lips and
the eyes are closed. Yeah, that's how any tween
would act like I'm not a kid I can take care
of myself. It almost feels like Jason Todd or
Tim Drake before he meets Batman But I I don't
know it the scene Again, it doesn't stink up
the room. It kind of makes sense for this series.
I don't know where it's gonna go But at the other
hand I like the designs and I like the banter
and I guess if they do pick up this character
What are they gonna do with him? Well, I guess
we'll find that I mean he kind of looks like
I guess a younger Green Goblin per se or I don't
know what they're gonna do But I I was impressed
with the character and you know the banter now
all that. Yeah Yeah, it was it was awesome the
banter between the two of them is great and what
we eventually find out about Teen Abomination
is interesting creepy but interesting I just
love when Tony is like no No, don't say your
name again. There are people around it's embarrassing
for both of us. Yeah He's like, yes, you're mean
you're supposed to be a superhero, but you're
mean I was like Yeah Wait, wait, that's a solid
solid well thought out argument there kid It's
just it's just so the series is so good Like
I can't believe how awesome the series is As
this issue closes we get a knock on on John Fabra,
I'm sorry on Foggy Nelson's Foggy Nelson's door
and You know it's basically Matt's time is running
out on the What told like the extremists is running
out of juice that Tony Dostin went so he just
you wanted to see his best friend Yeah, one last
time or you know, they just don't want to just
see you and Tony and I don't think Matt actually
like Foggy doesn't pick up that Matt can see
and Matt doesn't tell him because why should
two people get hurt like this? So yeah, and it
ends with Daredevil's vision fading in the radar
sense coming back Which I guess would suggest
that with his actual sight his radar sense is
nullified to some extent and Then you know we
go to the you know we move on uh overall again
another solid issue i think it's absolutely maddening
that we in the last two issues we haven't got
anything more from pepper and hornhead like what's
the deal what's going on here like i'm starting
to feel like i'm reading an episode of lost they're
dangling this question the answer is just over
here yeah but you're not going to get it for
three seasons I absolutely love this third issue.
It's just keeping on par with the series. Nothing
seems out of the ordinary. What's cool about
this one, and we haven't mentioned this, but
at the back of every one of these comics, they
go behind the iron curtain every time. And at
the back of this issue, they show us six different
Extremis app logos. They show us the various
versions of what could have been and number two
is what they eventually went with But I thought
that was super cool that they that they showed
those off. Yes I mean some of the other ones
like the number five wasn't so bad number four
and Number three is just kind of like whoo. It's
a swoosh Yeah It's like hello Nike I don't know.
Number two still looks like a Dr. Mario pill
for some reason. It does, doesn't it? Yeah. It's
still awesome, though. Yeah, I mean, I'm hoping
we get these on a shirt, but who the hell knows?
Yeah. All right, so issue number four. The cover
is Tony chillaxing on his couch using Daredevil
as a footstool. Yeah. Man, he's got to have a
cracked rib or something. I'm sorry an iron foot
on your back. Let's put it like this in the inner
monologue of daredevil Ow my everything yeah
Well, we see blood on the carpet, so you know
club, so it ain't gonna get that out And there's
some on the couch you don't know that it's blood
it could be grenadine or Cherry syrup you don't
know yeah You should dab or rub at all Yeah This
cover is a solid cover. It's not It doesn't grab
me the way the first few have Yeah, no no this
isn't us. I mean I like this cover, but honestly
out of the first Out of the first three issues
number three is by far the best out of them all
to this point and we open on television show
that we haven't heard from since Full House and
I was really hoping that these would be designs
for Saget and and Laurie Laughlin yeah I was
really hoping it would be Danny Tanner and Rebecca
Donaldson wouldn't it be Rebecca Stamos Mike?
Well, I forget how it whether she took just Jesse
Oh, what the hell was his last name? Oh god,
everybody's screaming at their iPods So okay,
but without trying to be too culturally insulting
Latina, you know, Kelly arepa here You know That's
the first thing I thought of when I saw this
like believe like if she was in a giant high
chair like the way Regis used to be with her
sure I could see that but come on now. I'll just
say that's what I thought so you should you know
lady Introduces Tony start to this morning show
and he comes out wearing, you know, the extremist
shirt and is like, oh god now he's doing a clothing
brand too and It's Mandy is her name. He's like
my pleasure to be here Mandy and You know and
all of a sudden he's like well, I'm happy to
announce that You know today, I got something
new and I'm just he basically launches a bunch
of x -ray flying x -ray Stark drones Around the
city. This is a no no way. It's it's basically
his own private security force. This is like
the Hover drones you fight in like the later
levels of a halo game Can't believe you haven't
said anything about this yet JJ Remember a couple
of years ago when we had a superior spider -man
They are don't get me wrong. I love superior
Iron Man Tom Taylor I'm please do not take this
the wrong way dude, but Jesus Christ this is
what if Doc Ock was in Tony Stark's body because
iron sight spider sight Stark Island Spider Island
I can't help but draw the the lines people. Yeah,
I mean, but he's basically Big brother now, you
know, this is in no way, you know endorsed by
the city of San Francisco or the state of California
and Daredevil and we get just a little bit and
this is where we find out that Tony Stark's responsible
for the future of demolition man Cause Daredevil
takes out one of these flying camera drones and
is like, you have destroyed an iron sight drone.
This is your first warning. No legal action will
be pending at this stage, but a bill has been
sent to your home, which is, you know, you've
been fined one credit for violation of the verbal
virality statute. And I was like, Oh Jesus. And
then you go back, you see Mandy has got this
like, aren't you concerned about privacy issues?
And Tony's uh response is absolutely priceless
because you go to like the the hype man for the
show he's like oh i sympathize with the need
for privacy but if it's a choice between the
lives of our children and trance frankly bizarre
browser history there's no real choice and trent
is just kind of like that i like ponies you know
it's just lord knows what's on this guy's web
browser but i just love how tony he tries to
shill that this is all for you and you know he's
trying to like hawk the app and he's like well
it's not my fault it's so expensive it's your
fault because you don't have enough money you
know and that's literally what he says was like
you need to earn more you need to be superior
it's like dude just because people can't afford
shit doesn't mean you have to shame them into
buying your product which is what he's doing
Yeah, this is the whole social commentary on
Apple and I can tell this is slam dunking Apple
because it's kind of like you can't afford Apple
products and get a second job. You know, you
can apply for Apple credit. It's not my fault
that you can't spend $500 for a new iPhone or
$350 for an iWatch. It's the new best fad -esque
thing that they're trying to promote and I get
that but people don't quite understand or at
least the rich don't understand that if we're
working minimum wage or whatever we're working
like i'm working per diem so i'm only working
a couple weekends a month if i wanted to put
in more days and hours i would but even then
i still it would take me a few months to get
a macbook or get the clone which i did today
my point being is that it's great that you have
all this money and what you can and can't afford
But you're not quite understanding what people
cannot. And when you're trying to promote something,
it's almost I wouldn't say fascism so much, but
Tony is definitely out of sync. And this is when
I go back to the Apple people, because any time
you walk into that store, it's like you have
security. You have state troopers in that store
loaded and armed and ready. no joke and you have
all these specific shirts that the techs are
wearing and you have not the geek squad but the
geniuses and they have a separate bar and if
you don't make an appointment they don't want
to talk to you they don't want to tell you anything
and unless you have apple care they don't want
to deal with you they will not they'll pretend
to be stupid until you purchase or renew that
apple care so it is a clickish little club On
this big giant splash page of the trouble at
home on Stark Island here, I love the bottom
right -hand corner panel where it's Tony and
he's got his repulsors ready to fire. It so looks
like a war machine suit. I know it's not. I know
it's the superior Iron Man suit, but just the
way that the shading and the colors are on that
square panel where we have someone off panel
saying, lower your weapons. Gee, I wonder who
could that be. Oh look, it's Madame Killjoy.
I mean Maria Hill That that is the nickname I've
given her yeah, and in the span of I think eight
panels Tony Well, he humiliates shield You know,
he's like I'll pay for the damages that he's
caused I'm gonna you know, I'll save the boy
He's wanted. No, he isn't. I've had a team of
lawyers making sure the warrants been received
and Maria's just, but, but, but, no, no, Maria,
don't embarrass yourself or I'll make sure the
whole world sees it. Yeah. And then you go in
and again, the armor goops off Tony, which I
love Senar's art here or Yildir. just the artist's
take on the sit like how the armor moves as it
peels off him it's cool and kind of beautiful
and just really really icky yeah it's like watching
a you know a silver version of venom yeah and
then tony's laying down the law if you're gonna
live here rule number one no talking about fight
club i mean don't touch anything you know and
then you're a walking lump of destruction don't
touch anything then rule number two no more rage
fights that one's self -explanatory rule number
three there's got to be something better than
teen a bomb well actually it's it's there will
be no teen abomination in this town what yeah
he goes Jamie and then Tony goes like really
and team abominations I guess and Tony just looks
away and he goes no i can't look at you and say
jamie like i don't understand the point is but
then i love the panel where abomination he has
like these puppy dog eyes even though it doesn't
have any pupils and he's like are you really
going to save me and tony is like yeah i'm going
to i'm going to study you and test you but you
know when i can do something i will and then
i love how abomination tries to take a drink
but tony's like no and we have parties right
now going on and also no monsters are allowed
so you go total like he's really demeaning this
poor guy and i can't blame theme abomination
i mean it's bad enough he's i guess for his argument
not only is he a monster but he's also a kid
and he's looking up to tony and tony just humiliated
him left and right with your walking ball of
destruction don't touch anything i don't like
your name and You know, this is gonna be like
Frankenstein and Igor all over again. And then
of course, you know, Daredevil comes back in
to the fray, as usual. And, you know, we have
that banter between, you know, the extremists
and what's going to happen. Daredevil trying
to stop Tony, and of course, you know, even though
Abomination was given that rule number two, you
know, no rage fights, he sees back in rage because
it's like Tony's the only one who can help me.
Yeah, and we have the Daredevil does like the
big reveal that Whatever Tony's endgame is and
he's I guess he's playing like a long a long
game here You find out that extremis the the
app on the phone It's it's a front. It's a shill.
It's it does nothing All it is is an audio trigger
to something Tony has already dosed the city
with Like and then that's a not even like a douchey
thing. That's kind of straight -up evil Yeah,
even if this is an ends justify the means sort
of thing that Tony's going for He's essentially
contaminated the the city's water supply with
this new extremis So I don't you know and I hope
in one of the three remaining issues That somebody
figures out how to create a signal that activates
extremis Outside of Tony's control and just see
what he does with that. But then you see a a
bomb come I'm sorry. I just I can't say teen
abomination you know, we got Jamie here hustles
in and He wipes out daredevil and Tony's like
no He sends the armor to rescue him. Then he
essentially Jack's Daredevil look it looks like
he's gonna torture him or something He essentially
jails him inside the suit. It's almost like when
Again, I have to I know a lot of people may not
like Iron Man 3. I love that fucking movie Yeah,
it's kind of like the president being hijacked
in the Patriot armor. I mean, it's the same kind
of thing here But this looks a lot cooler than
that did because you have the liquid going over
Daredevil's face and it's just oh man. Yeah And
you're right, I mean Tony technically is Dr.
Frankenstein and A -bomb is the monster. Tony
does say that when he's going to experiment on
Daredevil. Tony points to a bomb and says, listen,
I'm going to strap this guy down and work on
him, but I don't want you anywhere near me. I
don't want a monster next to me while I conduct
this experiment. It'll be way too mad scientist.
I mean, there's more humiliation piled on upon
more humiliation. And I can't blame. Well, when
we get to issue number five, because that's going
to be the sweetest plum of them all. But this
does start to come off very mad scientist desk
and. Yeah, Tony at this point is starting to
talk like a 1930s or 40s comic book or, you know,
serial mad scientist of what he's going to do
daredevil. Yeah, he's got kind of definitely
some straight up villain dialogue because he
and you know, no one else knows. I mean, this
is like watching a TV show and you know, when
the and then say like Buffy or some show where
the villain is still kind of part of the good
guys click. And none of the other characters
know that he's a bad guy. You know, and it's
just that it takes a really sinister vibe where
Tony's leaving the apart. We're leaving the hospital
room and he's like, oh yeah, you've got this
brain injury. You've got to be closely monitored
for a few weeks. You know, I don't know. Essentially,
he set it up. So in that time frame, like maybe
his brainwashing will come undone. Daredevil
will remember what happened. But for now, Tony
set it up so like. he can continue to put his
plan into action, you know, unabated or uncontested.
And that's why it makes it looks like a friendly
smile on Tony's face, but then there's, you know,
because of what happens, there's this underlining,
you know, sinister aspect to it. Yeah, that is
a very evil smile. Very evil. And again, it goes
back to who's really talking, the technology
or the person, but... see I think it is Tony
I don't like okay sure they've said that this
is symbiote armor but this is unlike and you
know again JT is the real Marvel expert among
the three of us but everything I've seen with
the symbiotes it's always been you know the whole
we this and we that or I this and I that when
it comes to carnage but it's one of those things
where I really do think this is Tony I don't
think like i don't think this is your normal
symbiote well it's it's not purely like like
i said and from like that first you said he's
taken like the bits of a symbiote that allowed
it to like slough off and you know like where
it where it oozes off like that and reforms over
here so i mean he's and i again i don't think
this is like there's symbiote parts in it and
i don't think that's really gonna come into a
whole thing with what time we have remaining
with this and whether or not the the secret wars
is gonna actually because now there's some thing
we're saying oh no we're not really rebooting
marvel but that's another episode you know i
it there this is symbiote it's the symbiote armor
i mean you can call it that because the way it
acts and how it applies itself i don't think
it's gonna make him go like you know with distended
jaw and you know long slobber slobbering tongue
kind of symbiote so you know time will tell Yeah
issue for the story of the art all well done
all very well executed. I'm Even when I first
read these on comics ology and guided view. I
absolutely loved every moment of it There is
nothing in this series to this point that has
made me say I'm done Yeah, it is just it's just
so good It's kind of refreshing and it's kind
of like one of those things where it's like how
evil can Tony Stark get before? Someone comes
in and really gut checks him Can anybody gut
check him honestly, I? Don't know the only person.
I think they could got check him It would have
to be a team up and the only thing I can think
of is a few members of the Avengers Which would
be probably Captain America. I don't know if
Hulk could step in but then it would have to
be Like the Bruce Banner Hulk where it's Hulk
is beast where Bruce Banner's Brain is in Hulk
And then I'm thinking, you know, whoever Nick
Fury can get his hands. I mean even Thor but
then again I have not seen Iron Man versus Thor
with the exception of the Avengers movie. So
I don't know You the only four that I can think
of that would have to go up against would be
the Eddie flash venom possibly Peter Parker's
spider -man Hulk with Bruce Banner's brain and
Possibly somebody who's not so much of a tech
guru that doesn't sound like a threat to some
Black widow and maybe even Hawkeye. I mean and
and Captain America, of course It would have
to be because then again, I mean Well, which
cap are we talking about here? We're talking
about the real cap. We're talking about the Falcon
Captain America, of course As I recall the only
time I've ever seen Somebody go up against a
symbol night and lose and then you know you had
to have I think Peter Parker and you had to have
what is it the original Venom and Iron Man and
Fantastic Four go against Carnage that's the
only thing I can think of like six people going
up against this guy. Yeah I don't know it's just
so crazy. Any final thoughts on issue for JT
um This is the one honestly I give most new comic
series and as much as I love Iron Man I was kind
of teetering on the brink here a drop in this
but this is the one that just set the hook in
me You know with that ending where this is like,
oh Tony you miserable son of a bitch. I Must
know what goes on, you know, it's like I gotta
see where this goes. So Hopefully the story will
come to a mostly satisfying conclusion. And yeah,
so we move on to number five. And again, like
Mike mentioned earlier, this is it's basically
the title dress and the overall design. This
is aping an issue. I don't can't remember specifically
which one it was. I couldn't find this out, but
it's basically aping an old issue of Tales of
Suspense, which was the original two and one.
comic that had the original Iron Man stories
back in the 60s like he shared this with Captain
America until they both graduated to their own
mainline titles so you know we got that and we
have like the kind of classic Hulk change kind
of cover we get this which could be a scroll
or some other villain looming in the background
you know it's if it wasn't for you and I wouldn't
be a monster just bad you know and it's the origin
of Almost I'm saddened a little bit that they
didn't have You know the story of who he is and
how he came to be Which is a comic book trope
that I love on origin story issue stories like
this Yeah, I gotta say this one is probably my
least favorite cover out of all five. I Just
yeah, it doesn't have that pop that the first
four covers have and we got The artist on this
one like the cover was done by Mike Choi and
the artist on this issue is Laura Braga who's
primarily known looking this up before the show.
She does a lot of work for Top Cow specifically
Witchblade, but she's also done some work for
Marvel on New Avengers and the current Captain
Marvel series with Carol Danvers I mean her art
is good. I mean, it's not as good as as Sinars,
but Sinar kind of set it up You know for her
to come in and be like, okay. Well, this is this
is the art This is what we need to do. It's not
I don't want to say she's being a friggin tracer
here But I mean Star Tower looks like Star Tower
looked like, you know a few few issues ago Tony
suit looks like the way Tony suits supposed to
look a bomb looks a little more kind of like
the Marvel the superhero squad design a little
bit obviously he still has hair in this but yeah
I think that the design her art is better suited
to the character of teen a bomb like don't get
me wrong on right and delays art it's just so
it's maybe it's it's her line work and the the
anchor Who was the ink around this one just looking
here? Well, she does her own inking too. So yeah,
it's just I think her art is better suited to
this character, but I love this Tony's trying
to draw blood and He's got it all set up and
then he pulls a move straight out of Pacific
Rim where he uses his Booster rocket on his elbow
to literally just stab teen abomination there.
I said it. Are you happy? he's like you and he
goes to smack tony one time and he's like you're
13 years old you don't know shit and you know
it's uh you know it's so he's drawn the blood
and he's gonna figure out you know how to help
teen abom while also i'm assuming gonna profit
immensely from this so he's like oh the search
is gonna take some time i'm gonna have a single
malt scotch tell me your origin story baby And
that's pretty much the entire rest of the issue
folks. It's it's it's Jamie's origin story Yeah,
and what comes out of this and I'm just gonna
say this right now folks spoilers I mean this
issue has been out for a while issue six is already
out. So An issue seven is coming. So if you haven't
read this already You've been warned spoilers
Yeah, Jamie is a Hogan And I'm not talking about
Hulk Hogan, folks. I'm talking about Happy Hogan.
Are you surprised? I haven't read any Iron Man.
I haven't read Marvel. I mean, I'm not... Everybody
knows this, you know? Technically when the pull
bag first started it was DC for 90 % of the first
two and a half years Yeah, so I when I read this
I was kind of surprised Yeah, but I mean if when
I first read this issue, this was a big surprise
for me That you know with the revelations only
but this was during the time probably between
Sometimes just before like onslaught and heroes
reborn and then the heroes coming back and Tony
found in You know Iron Man volume 3 that you
know Hogan and are happy and pepper had broken
up because they had been married for the longest
time so it's not like Hope happy was one day.
You know what? I'm gonna get me some the way
Tony gets him some you know, it's it life finds
a way, you know So we see Katrina here's Jamie's
mom. She has to bring him to work because she
can't get a sitter and they're doing this experiment
with gamma rays. And that never works out properly,
folks. I don't know why anyone in the Marvel
Universe even... What are you thinking about?
Gamma rays? You're fired. Gamma rays should be
illegal in the Marvel Universe. you should get
jail time for even thinking about using gamma
rays. You set up the lab in the middle of the
freaking desert and like 10 miles that way is
where the control panel is, you know. So you
see this and essentially Jamie gets irradiated
while trying to protect his mom and happy saves
them and I love the little thing where Tony says
if it had worked it would have made the gamma
knife look like a blunt instrument and then the
little You know, in panel there, it's like the
gamma knife is a real medical tool and not something
GoosePanner invented. Yeah, that's awesome. And
it says, apparently this is, I guess I was, I
missed this here when I read it. This isn't during
the time that Tony was missing in the alternate
universe. This is like when he was hit in the
bottle. You know, in the timeframe of the Marvel
universe and I was leading a double life back
then didn't leave time for the little things
and Jamie's like little things. He's like that
was also the day the black llama returned who
was and I love how in like When I say early Iron
Man, I mean like anything before 1985 with you
know, Christ on infinite earth you can kind of
use that as a benchmark for splitting eras of
comics in Twain like Iron Man used to fight a
lot of you know, mystic types and You know sort
of magically inclined enemies. I mean even have
that great uh story and i figured i think it
was like two or three hundred or something like
that where him and dr doom go back in time and
have to fight alongside merlin and king arthur
and camelot and stuff like that and anyway just
saying this this used to happen to iron man a
lot yeah so you know you see uh tony just talks
about his fight with the the black long was trying
to drive him insane and he crashes back at stark
industries and He basically blanks on what happens
after that And you see him I I can't remember
like he just gets pissed all of a sudden And
I love that. I mean, how did a llama beat you?
What? I mean it has hooves. How did it hold the
orb thing? Was it tied around its neck? I wasn't
he was a powerful mystic huh a llama like L like
a guru you were picturing me fighting an actual
llama Forget it. Like, I just love that look.
You were picturing things like, it's the Marvel
universe. It's not outside the realm of possibility.
I mean, there's a... Sorry, Jeremy, you go. Yeah,
I can almost picture seeing a gigantic mutated
llama in this universe. Okay, we have Stagron
the Dinosaur Man, the Kangaroo, and the Grizzly.
Like, there is no end of... And most of these
guys are Spider -Man villains, for Christ sakes.
Like it's like if spider -man's done one thing
he is peripheral Flourish related the concept
of superpowered animal themed characters in this
universe so anyway, we get back to Jamie's origin
and It's like and Tony's like there were two
people injured in the explosion. They didn't
mention the creation of a five -year -old monster
And he's like that happened later And it's essentially
Jamie gets bullied at school. His mom, you know,
she got fired or something happened like she
it's kind of a Peter Parker, you know, Aunt May
situation. And his mom's like, I'll go talk to
your teacher and we'll deal with these boys,
which is Not the wrong way to deal with that,
but it doesn't benefit the kid in any way, and
I can attest to that because I kind of got bullied
as a kid growing up, like small town bullying
because, you know, I was fat and I liked comic
books a little too much. And my dad was always
like, don't react and they'll leave you alone,
which never happened. And Jamie just blows up
as his mom, as children are one to do. And, well,
gee, negative emotions. adrenaline gamma energy
what could possibly oh look it's teen a bomb
you know and it's and the whole reason that jamie
can't turn back is well more often than not being
a gamma mutant is tied to your emotional state
and as long as he's pissed at himself he can't
change back because he he his first transformation
he killed his mom by accident and you know you're
gonna be pissed at yourself forever tony says
and What about you dad? Where's he in all this
and this is where we finally get the reveal and
I love Laura's face work on Tony in that bottom
I guess that would be like bottom of page 19
where he's like, huh son of a bitch Yeah, and
that's exactly why I've been saying this entire
podcast. It's It's down a junior Because I swear
when he said that I'm like It's Avengers all
over again. He wants something, you know, he
wants something in bright lights. He wants his
Naya son of a bitch Yeah, it goes on and he's
like well you actually the son of one of the
few people I really do care about I am gonna
help you Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm still gonna
find a way to monetize the hell out of this So
he's like but also spent some time trying to
work out how to reverse what's happened to you.
We'll start tomorrow don't you need to protect
the city uh no i've got an entire flying network
of x -ray cameras people can't do shit without
me seeing it you know to sum it up and then we
go he goes into what is essentially his armory
i guess because you can see some armors and alcoves
in the background he's like trying to figure
out like what what happened after he blanked
out in this fight with the black llama and tony
is Is like okay pull up the armor footage from
eight years ago December 13th. No footage found
video has been deleted Access all stark security
footage from that same date cross -reference
with facial rec display all footage containing
Tony Stark No footage found multiple files have
been deleted from drives and servers and then
I don't just Did you not love like the whole
kind of sinister like arching of the eyebrows?
They were like someone's taken a day for me.
Who could have done something like that? You
know, it seems like he's Turing into Loki for
some reason with the hair. I don't yeah, but
with the hair and the eyes He starts to become
very Loki esque as well. Yeah No, there's a very
low key. I think he's definitely he's he's sliding
not it not into anti -hero territory and he's
definitely not a villain. He's in that nebulous
fourth state of comic book persona where you're
neither good nor bad. Yeah, it's definitely,
again, Dr. Claw, very sinister. The problem that
I have with this is that I do like how Tony kind
of goes back and forth. Like, his face... keeps
changing from like happy to sinister to happy
to sinister. And then he's almost down in a brew,
but then all of a sudden he sees that somebody
has broken into his vials. Yeah. Only thing I
can think of is that it's got to be Pepper Potts.
Why would I say Pepper Potts? Because who else
knows Tony better than she does? Well, yeah.
I mean, there's what she's doing with Hornhead
and whatever they're up to, which... you know,
still hasn't gotten, they haven't gotten into
that. I mean, that's kind of like the B plot
in a way. And now we've got like B and C. I mean,
we've got Tony and what the F he's up to with
Extremis. We've got Pepper and Hornhead and whatever
they're planning to deal with this douchebag
Tony here. And now we've got Tony trying to figure
out, you know, like, why is he missing this day?
Like, why can he not remember? And why, and again,
this... It's not surprising that he wouldn't
remember something like this because of how,
you know, he had those incomplete backups that
he used to restore his memory when he wiped his
hard drive when Norman Osborn was after him,
like during the Dark Rain storyline. So stuff
like that's missing and it's just... I love that
very villainous, like I said, evil finger contemplation
pyramid there, and you can almost hear that,
next time, catch it, next time, like Jeremy suggested.
And I just got to say quickly, I love the look
that Laura put in Tony's face, where he makes
that first video request, and then he's just
chugging back the Jim Beam. Chug, chug, chug,
and he's just like, oh, I've missed you so much,
JB. And then he's like no, he's got this problem.
He's gonna work on a bomb You know and it's again
to be continued again. Like I said the fourth
the fort I'm in it for the long haul. I'm here
till the end I honestly don't know whether I'm
happy or sad if Marvel actually does a whole
reboot or they talk about just Kind of putting
some Vaseline on the lens of life if you get
that analogy just kind of obscure certain things
who knows But yeah, I love this issue. Like I
said, the cover was, it was cool to see that
homage to Tales from Suspense, but it's not,
it's not that, just not, no, sorry, no. it doesn't
pop like those first ones, but overall I loved
Laura Braga's art in this. I think it really
worked for the character. Like Jeremy said, you
know, maybe it seems like it's kind of channeling
a little bit of Loki. I just like the... I don't
mean it actually does look like this, but I like
the kind of anime hair that Tony kind of has,
where he's got like the loop cage tiara as part
of his Iron Man headgear there. You know, you
almost want to have like this giant control crystal
glowing and set in the middle of his forehead
like that. It just seems to be missing. I overall
I like this, you know, we get the And it's kind
of a tragic origin, you know, he never there's
a father. He never met with Jamie. He's pretty
much always gonna Be a monster. I mean not that
he actually is a monster He's gonna be trapped
in the body of this monster until he can forgive
himself and Lord knows if that'll ever happen
Yeah, it's it's just crazy. Yeah, and again probably
favorite image in this issue just amongst so
many good ones was the huh son of a bitch yep
absolutely all right so overall on a zero to
five star scale what are we going to give the
first five the first kind of arc here for a rating
jeremy well five issues five stars across the
board i was never bored by the dialogue. I was
never bored by the imagery. I was never bored
by the facial expressions. I, you know, the interesting
with any comic book universe is this or is this
not another alternate universe or is this a what
-if story? I don't know. I don't know other than
the fact that possibility since Tony decided
to get his hands on, you know, our favorite Classic
villain and try to make money off of it. Well,
we all know how that's gonna work But I guess
there is an app for everything and there seems
to be an app for this It's a tighter story, although
I do recommend that if you like this type of
story that I go back to that Twilight Zone episode
number 12 looks just like you as for the team
Abomination his origin I'm not surprised that
it had something to do to connect with Tony and
I get I think it has to go back to the Iron Man
3 how Tony was bonding with that kid and kind
of like went away and they you know people were
like because I asked that question to is like
what was the point of the kid and there was nothing
and then all of a sudden they're gonna bring
another kid in and now but they're gonna make
him a monster and all of a sudden it's gonna
reconnect the happy Hogan because I had heard
that happy Hogan had passed so I kind of see
how everything is trying to intersect and trying
to make up for people complain Whether you like
or dislike the extremist storyline in Iron Man
3 I am familiar with the story arc though, and
I think it was a story arc in the 70s with the
extremists But I'm glad how they've reinvented
it all and I'm glad that if you're gonna bring
on somebody to go one -on -one again They're
trying to give Daredevil his comeback. Well,
it worked, and I don't know what's gonna happen
to him in 6 and 7, but I have to go with JT.
I'm definitely on for this ride. I'm more of
the DC person, not the Marvel person, but every
now and then, you come across a story that works,
and I think with the covers, I love all five
of them, especially the fifth one, because it
reminds me of anything out of the 50s or 60s.
So I would definitely say, if you don't want
to go to your local comic book store, Definitely
download the series. You will not have remorse
on this series No, absolutely. I mean I'm subscribed
on Comixology now and I just I cannot wait till
The next it because right now we do have issue
six folks, but we're not gonna do we're not gonna
talk about issue six obviously until The rest
of the series comes out Because I think it's
only going to nine I have not seen I mean Marvel
has not It's not even a well when this episode
goes live. It'll be the end of April But as of
this recording we have not seen the Marvel July
solicitations yet So so so far online all as
I can find is through issue 9 But I absolutely
love it. I think this series is great I'm sad
to see it go when it eventually does everything
Jeremy and JT have said I completely agree with
this is a wonderful wonderful series And I can't
wait to read more of it. I just can't so I'm
gonna give it a five all around as well No, I
mean overall these first five issues like I said,
I'm hooked. I'm here for the long haul I love
Sinner's art in the first four issues Laura Broga
if she's on for the next I think she's on through
six and seven I'm not sure about eight and nine
but uh... eight nine i think it's in our okay
but uh... either way i i love in the story i
like i want to know what tony's endgame is i
want to know what pepper and hornhead are up
to uh... you know we'll see what happens and
i want to give it uh... uh... it's i want to
give it four decimal seven five like four and
three quarters stars You can give it four and
a half, but we don't have four and three quarters.
I don't want to just give it four and a half,
and I don't want to just give it five. It's kind
of that middle of the road. If only because they
set these hooks with Pepper and Hornhead, but
they don't move any further forward with that.
And I'm not saying complete reveal. It's just,
just give me something. Just a taste. What's
going on? But overall, I love what... Tony did
with Daredevil and how he got rid of Daredevil
and will Daredevil realize what's happened and
come back for his justly, his just revenge. You
know, the tragic origin of teen abomination and
Jamie and how, you know, it's his own fault.
Like definitely pick this up people, digital,
like on paper, get the trade, whatever, but buy
this series. Absolutely. Alright folks, that's
gonna do it for this episode of The Pull Bag.
Coming up next, Jeremy and I are gonna head to
