About this Episode

Joe Reed and Mike Blanchard revisit the 1991 sequel 25 years later, discovering it holds up better than they remembered. They break down the film's lighter tone compared to the original, discuss the cast and costume changes, explore potential Utrom setup for an unrealized third film, and debate how it compares to more recent live-action TMNT movies.

Hi, this is Bobby Curnow, Chief Turtle Editor

at IDW Publishing, and you are going to have

a shell of a good time inside the pull bag. Comic

Terry. Those of you who don't remember what Comic

Terrys are, they're essentially commentaries,

but since this is a comic book podcast, I decided

to call them Comic Terrys. And the only other

Comic Terry we've done in the four years in the

pull bag is Joe and I had done for the 25th anniversary

of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the original

awesome movie. The good one. The good one, yes.

We did a commentary for that and... It's a year

later, and it's 1991, and it's 25 years since

1991, so we're here to talk about Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles 2 The Secret of the Ooze. So Joe

is here. Hello, Joe. Hello. Did you see this

in theaters as a kid? I'm sure I did, but...

This got a lot of play on my VHS Like I can remember

I think there was a Burger King commercial in

the beginning of it FHE that logo would play

and then all of it got rewound over Relentlessly

as I probably watched it at least once a day

I can say though that after that marathon of

you know 11 12 13 years old when I was watching

that I don't think I've seen it since Really?

Yeah Oh, well, maybe started it and realized,

oh, I don't know if I can do this and stop. I

bought. either there there's that nice wal -mart

blu -ray four -pack that came out came with uh...

the three live -action movies in the cgi one

and i have that upstairs and that's you know

i've showed oliver the the blu -ray for the first

movie but this one i just can't bring myself

to watch again and i'm about to watch it and

it's all your fault it's twenty five years it's

an anniversary damn it I mean, come on. And really

the other reason why I wanted to do this besides

celebrating 25 years since Secret of the Ooze

was that Turtles 2, the new Turtles 2 Out of

the Shadows just came out. So I figure, oh hey,

we did the other one, the original other movie.

Why not do the second movie and then we can work

our way up to working on 2014 and 2016. This

will be interesting for me to watch this so recently

after watching the second live, well, what do

we call it now? I don't know, the 2016 movie,

and seeing which one I think is better now because

they're both kind of shaky ground for me. So

I'm going to tell you right now, folks, there

may be spoilers in this. Well, there's definitely

going to be spoilers, obviously, because we're

commentating on the 91 film, but there may be

spoilers for the 2016 Out of the Shadows film.

So you've been warned. There may be spoilers.

You're going to hear a quote from Mikey. It might

be combat cold cuts. It might be, I don't know,

fella. Oh fellow choker, I know it might be something

who knows so you're gonna hear that we're gonna

do a countdown and then you guys can start your

your movie players your few people still have

DVD players or VHS is or beta max or who knows

so Let's get to the quote and then I'll do the

countdown after this line cinema I miss them

thanks for making Ninja Turtles for us yes and

in in memory of Jim Henson yeah he didn't he

just recently pass away at this point yeah this

was it well between the first and second yeah

yeah that was still his company Yeah, and still

reluctant to have worked on it at all ever because

of the violence It wasn't something that he felt

cool with yeah. Oh My god that opening shot had

the World Trade Center. Yes the first one had

that too. Yeah, damn So this is New York folks

and in New York they love pizza Horse -drawn

carriages apparently Yeah, this was a clever

intro I remember thinking it was funny that everybody

was chowing on New York style pizza. Can't get

a good slice of New York style pizza where I'm

from here in Grand Rapids. I haven't found one

yet. Don't you have to kind of go to New York

for that? Okay, so the the the opening credits

here is this scene is going through. It's list

starring Paige Turico. They replaced Judith Hogg

with Paige Turico for for April O 'Neil, which

Dammit. She's okay, but I do have a soft spot

for Judith. Judith Hogue. Yeah, she was she was

awesome as April We just saw David Warner's name

pop up and I'm like, hey, it's Rachel ghoul from

Batman the animated series And Ernie Rice jr.

Yep recently Recently was sick and had all sorts

of go fund me campaigns. I hope he's doing I

haven't heard I haven't heard anything recently

Okay, so the two girls he's talking to He makes

the comment of oh, I'll dream about something

a little thinner. Those girls are not fat I I

know I I remember seeing this it's like wow Keno's

a jerk Like that was on gold for Keno, you know

Toshishiro Obata, there we go. That's That's

my swordsmanship instructor. So I have to say

that my impressions of this, of just the scenes

that we've seen so far, you know, once Kino shows

up, everything looks like it's lit in a studio.

Very, very bright. They're not doing the whole

dark thing that the first one did. Yeah, no.

Well, because now they're in like some sort of

mall type of thing and you got guys in... female

stocking masks. It's like somebody raided their

mom's panty drawer or something. And I knew this

was going to be a little bit brighter than the

first one, simply because how dark the first

one was. The first one wanted to be more mirage

-ish, I believe. Yeah, they got a lot of criticism

for that. And they're making up for it. Yeah,

I think that's sadly why Casey's not here. Maybe

Elias Cody couldn't make it or something, I don't

know, but just... Kino's okay. Hell? Yeah, I

wonder if they'd had Kino if Casey were still

able to show up. Yeah. I don't care what anyone

says about this movie, I love this opening right

here. The frame on the screen, I love it! So

the turtle's got a little redesign. I just imagine

the foam rubber doesn't stick around that long,

degrades, so yeah, they'd have to make new stuff.

Yeah. It's not so new that they have freckles

everywhere, though, and the colors are more pronounced,

like, you know, in Turtles in Time. I noticed

in this, rather I didn't notice it for the longest

time, and then as a kid I remember thinking it

was clever that as the turtles are running around

fighting, moving around quickly, the credits,

the little, the credits for the people making

the movie, they disappear in creative ways. They

saw what's happening, and I thought that was

kind of like, oh look, Donnie knocked it away,

ha ha ha. It was so cool. Donnie totally didn't

get that cord around that dude's hands So another

thing we'll notice With people complaining about

the first one of the turtles using their weapons

is that they are not using their weapons in this

they're using yo -yos and foam padded thingies

Leo does use his swords, kind of, but he uses,

yeah. I don't know, it just... I love this scene

from Donnie. I love this scene with the clown.

Yeah, yeah, yeah! I love that! Yeah, that expression,

the tone of voice is something that I replicate

sometimes. In my head I hear it when I'm doing

something. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah. So we lost Corey

Feldman for Donnie. Is anybody else the same?

I think everybody's the same except for him.

I'll have to look. I'll look at the cast changes

later after we finish the movie. But I know Robbie

Rist and the guy, is it Brian Tochi who plays

the voice of Leo? I think they are the same because

I know Robbie Rist was in all three. Come again,

I don't care anyone says it's just like non -jokes,

but it's combat cold cuts He wipes his feet Come

on yeah, the ninja turtles are doing a horrible

job of being invisible right now So nice that

these turtles don't look like ugly evil monsters

One of these days folks Joe and I are going to

suffer through 2014. We will. Did they bother

to tell them, you know, cops? Yeah, but I don't

know. Well, at least they paid him. I think that

was their pizza anyway. Yeah, it was. Look at

this. Look at this chump. That's the actor inside

Michelangelo, right? Possibly, yes. Again, I'll

have to look later. I don't remember off top

my head. I'm 85 % sure that's the dude inside

them. michaelangelo costume not the voice but

the costume yeah yeah yeah well they had to get

them on the screen somehow i mean you can't just

give a guy a job in a suit that's like oh you

know somebody and this is where spoilers are

going to come in for out of the shadows folks

There was news articles online saying, don't

expect to see Casey Jones in the hockey mask,

because you don't hire Stephen Amell to hide

his face. And I'm like, yeah, we know that. And

besides, it just doesn't. Oh, snake in the fridge.

I love how she's able to pick out all four of

their stuff. Yeah, this is her new apartment

after the Shredder story and getting the corner

office and having... You know, that's like a

million dollar apartment in New York. New York,

yeah. I mean, that apartment is huge. There's

no way in hell. Yeah. And you got to think, I

don't know what gear it is in the movie, but

the movie came out in 1991. New York real estate,

I'm sure, was not as expensive as it is today.

And those boxes have to be empty as they're carrying

them here. I'm sorry. They have to be empty.

a cappella Donnie can never know lip -syncing

is much better in this Again Shoot oh That's

a lot of just Yeah, I never understood that part

of the scene where he puts salt on Mikey's pizza

I've never some people salt their pizza. It's

actually kind of good Oh boy, our fight starts

now. Yeah, I think they could go back to the

old sewer layer. He's got his foot in her sink.

I just it's gotta be unsanitary You know why

Raphael Okay. Kill Guy, a heart attack. And Splinter

looks cool in this. He looked good in the first

movie, but again, talking about how they up the

suits and the style and the puppetry in this

one, he looks a little off. Think from the first

movie because I think it's a different design,

but it's not bad No, and he actually looks like

a rat unlike most comic interpretations of dogs

Ten flips now Yeah, he's not gonna stay buried,

dude. I love how they keep up the continuity

between the first movie and this movie where

he basically rises up out of the trash. I wonder

how much time has passed. April has a whole new

apartment, and she's moved into it. I'm gonna

pretend that this happened earlier. There's his

helmet! Want to give him a thumbs up and go back

down into the trash. Yeah, the foot junkyard

I Think the blonde guy is raff could be I Used

to know we'll find out later Again Tatu's voice

is dubbed even though the actual dude sounds

exactly like that His face There's that little

stutter he has there where he starts to say S

and I wonder if he was about to call him Saki

Wonder if that was intentional Could be I Love

the new razor helmet in this movie. I Mean the

first movie obviously, you know, you put classic

shredder in there the metal type stuff, but this

movie I absolutely love that razor helmet Was

she channel three in the first movie? Yeah. Yeah.

This was another thing that made me think that

the comic was wrong and the movie was right.

They're calling it TGRI, because it's T -C -R

-I. T -C -R -I, yeah. And my fan theory is that

Professor Jordan is Neutron. Could be. He's also

an Eve outside of being Rachel Gould the voice

of Rachel Gould in Batman anime series. That's

um That's Dillinger and Sark from Tron Yeah,

that's what I saw him in this and then in that

I like wait a minute. This guy's an actual classy

actor What was he doing in Ninja Turtles? Is

an Oprah on a TD guide Wow Yeah, you don't see

too many of those anymore. Nope, that's a Butterfinger.

I think. Where's Bart Simpson when you really

need him? I can't make out the candy bar wrapper.

It's too orange to be a Butterfinger. And too

large. Yeah. Oh, he's a wire guy. I always wondered

what the hell the kid was doing there. Cause

we'll meet him here in a minute. But I always

wondered, he's probably a tech or something.

I just always wondered how the hell... Yeah,

he's one of the technicians. Well, April's rocking

some mad shoulder pads. You think? He totally

did a miserable job wrapping that cable Giant

dandelions Contaminated I'm gonna rush in there

without any personal protection equipment Not

the other two were that protected either I mean

I mean they had suits on but Faces weren't covered

or anything and they just touched that flower

too. Yep, and now he's holding it Man, I really

want to get into the writer's room and ask them

now if Professor Perry was an ootrum. Because

that would have been one of those lovely things

that would have gotten revealed in a legit third

movie. Yeah. You don't need no cape in this movie

Ninja cleaning He's got mops strapped to his

bow So funny wax on wax off I wonder where they

get the money to buy their pizza. I don't know.

Maybe they pulled a Danny Pennington and stole

it out of her wallet. nicer scene It's where

splinter hangs out I imagine most of the time

probably yes You have never seen this but know

what it is Why why wouldn't you show it to him,

but that's cool. Yeah, where did huh? He must

have hidden in the lair and then yeah gone back

to get it after a point after the foot attack

Maybe Totally need to make an ooze container.

Why have I not done that yet? Yeah Well besides

the fact that you moved into a new house, why

haven't you finished your shredder stuff either?

Yeah, that too. I don't have a big welder anymore

until I get that garage rewired What I like about

this is Each of them have various character growths,

like here with Donnie and Splinter, it's nice.

I don't understand this lab. Why don't you understand

this? It's like a leftover Star Trek set. Like,

what is this orb in the middle of the room with

the pyramid? Yeah, that's true. Well then again

That weird thing that just me utrum technology,

I don't know maybe This is the last of it Outside

of my know and theory I wonder if they knew what

the mutagen was, or if it was just toxic waste

to them. So that scene just a minute ago was

they get on the roof of TGRI. Also I can think

of his access chemicals from Batman. Let's do

it! They are 3D now, Mikey. Yeah. We get to see

Donnie actually being a tech guy. Cause they

really didn't do that in the first one. Nope.

He was more of a mechanic. Gag face. Number 37.

Now that's funny. Four years before clerks And

boom it explodes Must have been reading the disc

and he pulled it out The sound is interesting

in this. It sounds like they recorded a lot of

the... I guess except for the foley. Some of

that sound like it was recorded on stage. Yeah.

And everybody needs to learn football, folks.

So learn it from the Ninja Turtles. They are

using their weapons here. Yeah done did not much

Turtle in the open Fumble punt Why they should

get stabbed in the back right now Got it got

it good. I don't get it Wait Leo has two different

He's got his swords on his back, but then he's

holding two other it's a two tonfas from one

of the foot soldiers Okay. Wipe out. Ninja, vanish.

Really want to know what's inside those eggs.

I'd love to manufacture that. i assume it's just

smoke well yeah it's got to be like a chemical

composition yeah so as soon as tatsu brings shredder

to mutagen i knew exactly what was going to happen

uh -huh i was hoping for Certain things I was

hoping they would get a warthog and a rhino.

Yeah, that was not the case and We would not

get that until 25 years later. That's that's

crazy It took that long and I'm surprised they

went with these two unknowns And because of the

TGRI stuff and all that turtles start packing

because they're going to, you know, start searching

the underground real estate of New York City

for a new sewer layer. Oh, this scene, they talk

about ordering pizza and it just kind of shows

up. Raph hiding behind that thing. Sticking his

giant turtle foot now they hid better in the

first movie a lot better. Yeah Just jump out

the window, you know, they they know how to get

to the roof from the apartment It's a miracle

she didn't crack herself in the skull with those.

Yep. And he sees Raph's impatient foot. Can I

hurt him? Please I just want to hurt him. Keynote

pulls an April from the first movie. Really,

where was the line? Like, you have that effect

on people, Master Splinter. And it's always been

the word that they've used to kind of an interesting

it's hard to not just watch it yeah it really

really is yeah sure they were that's enough talk

from me oh boy let's see okay so you asked earlier

at the beginning of the movie as far as which

ones changed from, which voice actors changed

from one to two. In one you had Josh Pace as

the voice of Raph, you had Robbie Rist as Mikey,

Brian Toschi as Leo, Corey Feldman as Donnie

obviously, Kevin Clash as Splinter, and oh, Michael

McConaughey did the voice of Tatsu in both movies.

So the first movie wasn't... What's his name?

It wasn't his real voice either. Nope. In the

second movie, you have Adam, Carl as Donatello.

Obviously Corey wasn't there. You have Laurie

Faso as Raph in the second one here. Robbie Rist

and Brian Tocci and Kevin Clash all reprise as

Mikey, Leo and Splinter. And then you have David

McLaren or McCharen as Shredder. And Frank Wilker

as Toca and Rezar. I learned that recently. So

really the only two out of the Turtles that have

been in all three films are Brian Toshi and Robbie

Wriste as Leo and Mikey respectively. Yeah because

Corey Feldman comes back for part three doesn't

he? Yep. And so many of the jokes like not quite

ripe yet that I didn't get until I was older,

yeah Hey Check it out! I know everyone loves

the old Sarah Den from the first movie, but I'm

sorry. The Subway Den in the second movie is

so much better. Yeah, this was cool. That is

an amazing set. It really, really is. Spider

city Hey! It's his cape! He's got his cape now!

What the hell? It is the tiger stripe cape! Good

lord. Oh God seeing the giant Clara one of the

meetings knowledge I can think of is the little

alien dudes in in Toy Story the claw Everybody's

asking April to sign things Okay now that is

not a corner office with a window the bare essentials

potato chips okay so we need to talk about donnie

and his phone call here because he's on a payphone

that he's holding in his arm how the hell is

that possible all right i'm gonna i'm gonna i'm

gonna hope But there's a chord coming out the

bottom of that phone. The other part is Donnie

is definitely a hacker and knows the trick where

you record a series of beeps and play it back

on your phone to steal phone calls. The sad thing

is that Hackers came out four years after this.

It did? Oh my god. Yeah, it came out in 95. But

even if you did have the series of beeps, you

still have to have a connection. This isn't a

cell phone here. Yeah, he's got to be. I hope

he's carrying around the wire. Give me that.

April, you're too entertained by those childish

antics. You're an adult. See, that's the difference

between the two actresses, between Judith and

Paige. I think they... Okay, Paige was probably

I don't know this I'm not looking at her profile

but on IMDb or anything and she's probably Late

20s mid 30s, maybe somewhere around there. She's

not exactly an older April she's more young in

this movie than she was in the original movie

That's who's out of there talk about ninja vanish

Razor's underbite always bothered me Yeah But

generally speaking those those are pretty decent

costumes Mm -hmm. I Think I like toka better.

Yeah as far as the costume goes. I like toka's

design better. Oh My god, that's totally Frank

Walker Yeah You know why I know that's totally

Frank Welker and of course this movie that I

want to mention came out a year after this one,

but The reason why I know Rezar is Frank Welker

now is because that's his cave of wonders voice

from Aladdin The thing with with with toka that

I'll bring up now is I really wish it would have

been slash Yeah, I wonder I don't know what I

don't remember which one came first I think slash

in the comment. Well slash in the cartoon came

first. Oh Slash wasn't a character from Mirage

that I can remember Not for long cold -blooded

shredder Find it so weird that David Warner can

play a role like this is essentially this I don't

want to say a subservient role, but I'm used

to him playing the big badass villains like the

voice of Rachel Gould or Sarkin It just oh There's

Keno Under one of the bridges. I wonder if that's

East Laidman Island. Yeah You're gonna have to

perfect your bad New York accent and then you

can get into the Foot Clan. Thank God it was

New York and not Boston because if anybody came

up with a really really bad fake Boston accent

I'd have to kill them. So Keno is going through

with this plan of trying to get recruited. And

of course Raph is in on it. Totally taking the

role of Casey. I mean that whole yeah, I am like

is the same but different Yeah Yeah, yeah, he's

yeah Keno's taking the role of Casey but not

from the first movie because Casey in the first

movie was more attached to Donnie than he was

to I mean he and Raph had a thing in the first

movie, but later It always ended up being...

I think it was just them repairing the car. Yeah.

But it just from all the way back, Casey and

Bob, the two hotheads were always the ones to

get together. Yeah, no, absolutely. I agree,

yeah. Ernie Rice Jr. was in the Donatello suit

in the first movie, I think, right? Again, I

will have to look when we finish the film because

I'm trying to conserve bandwidth and all that

stuff. So, Kino's worthy of the final test. It's

the test of the bells. Who could do this? I mean,

nobody, nobody without years of training could

do that test. Who are they hoping to find? They

or maybe they're just there'd be happy if they

got three bells off or something. I don't know

Well, he does say remove as many of the bells

without any silence, you know without making

any noise So I don't think they're saying Oh

remove them all yes saying remove as many as

you can and Because obviously this has got you

know raff Behind it they end up getting I'm so

that is the stupidest part of this movie what

the foot People in the background Pratt that's

not practice They're essentially just tapping

each other those were that's a that's a legit.

That's a legit Okay, Eskimo exercise All right.

Well, it didn't look legit. It looked like they

were playing a game a handball They're probably

and and the plastic sound effect there did not

yeah did not help Raph sees a ghost So the whole

plan goes to shit at this point You see you don't

think it'd be oh no Okay, run. Yeah. Kick your

butt. He just let him hit the other guy. That's

hilarious. Yeah, Kid's a good martial artist,

actor. Ernie Rice Jr. is good. I'd love to...

I have a vague memory of him doing MMA, but I

don't know. Not big, but... Just kill him, Shredder.

I am sorry. New York is too big of a city for

him to run all the way back in that short amount

of time. I know I'm nitpicking, but... oops oopsie

one of my favorite lines out of this is coming

up yeah mine too i didn't get the joke as a little

kid i had to watch it a couple times Every time

Donnie does that with his his bow it was like

what does he do? He's he's got a pool stick.

It's like he's ready to queue up or something

It's raff He does have a watch on I always wondered

why he looked at his wrist And I never really

realized that he had a watch I think I remember

stills of this shot, not a shredder of them in

the net. I think I remember that being part of

the promotional stills. I had a lot of the trading

cards that you could buy at the grocery store,

little movie cards. Yeah, oh man, I miss those.

Ralph Nader. Oh god, Mikey! How do you even know

about Ralph Nader? A little closer! Yeah. Bunga.

Hmm It's always nice seeing Splinter go into

action. Yeah, and it's it's unfortunate I think

the only reason he's not down there actually

fighting now is because he's a Rickety puppet

that couldn't do what they do. Yeah. Yeah splinter

in these movies was never But yeah, Splinter's

puppet in these movies was never really meant

for full -on action. The biggest scene he had

in all three was the one at the end of the first

film. Whereas in the new movies, because of CGI

and all the future tech that we now have, he

can really do more, of course. In the first movie,

first new... Michael Bay produced produced people

not directed produced. There's a difference Ninja

Turtles from two years ago. A lot of people didn't

like splinters movements and Every time I hear

his voice now, I'm like, oh god, it's it's it's

the idiot from wings monk Yeah, yeah, that too.

It's monk It sounds like they were going after

the splitter from the cartoon Who definitely

is not a Japanese sounding person. Yeah. That

hurts. I never had the action figures for Toca

and Rezar. Yeah, I don't think I ever really

wanted them. I was always Bebop and Rocksteady.

I mean, I like Touka and Rezar in the movie,

and I like seeing them in some of the games that

they were in, but I really never had a desire

to have... And again, Touka, regardless of when

Slash originally showed up, like you said, he

probably wasn't in... I don't think he was in

the original Mirage Run, you'd know more than

I would, but... At this point, it's 1991, the

cartoon was already out for... Let's see... Two,

three... Two or three, yeah. Five years. Five

years, five years. The cartoon had already been

out for five seasons at this point, so I'm thinking

if Slash had been debuted in the cartoon, if

it was or it wasn't, I don't remember. I just

wish they would have... First of all, I hated

their babies. That's one big carrot. I just wish...

Oh, Mikey. Well, Jordan, I think they're not

actually babies that Perry... made them dumb

on purpose yeah he did he didn't want them to

be as savage as shredder originally wanted he

did do it on purpose i understand that but i'm

just saying in the i would love to see what a

intelligent toka enrazer would be like toka just

showed up in the in the uh nick series Recently

Oh Diddy I haven't I've been waiting for see

I've been waiting on season four because I want

to watch it all at once mm -hmm So it's it's

not not in the way you'd think Okay, now. This

is you showed up in season three or season four

for space turtles That's season four okay, okay?

Yeah that toka costume is awesome It is. That's

why I wish it was Slash. Oh! He's not gonna fit.

That's a joke I didn't get even as a young person

Fantastic Yeah, see with these movies we never

needed to see The original movies were never

intended to have splinter be in action. He was

always a stationary character regardless of how

Degraded or not the puppet was or how you know

delicate it was it was always you know, it's

very really I think that I think it's That scene

a second ago when splinter is standing there

that's one of the only times in the first two

movies We see him actually standing up the other

time being obviously at the end of the first

movie Yeah, you got to hide the puppeteer somewhere

and it's easiest to hide him in a chair, you

know This movie also I was saying earlier focuses

on Donatello's character a little bit more than

the first one did and because he has this whole

crisis of conscious of Whether they're just one

big accident or if it was destiny and I do like

that I wish that they would I'd like that they

had done that a little bit more in the song And

again, like you said earlier, you know showing

off his his does machines The fact that he understands

everything the professor is saying I wonder if

this was planting seeds for utrums. It could

be, yeah. You know that's a horse trailer? That's

an insult to horses everywhere. Fun I've quoted

that line. I'm sure you said it to your son In

that exact voice too Or like Tatsu in the first

will be cool I know Razor and Tolka are suits

and there are people in the suits, but I really

want to think Razor is Teen Wolf's... Michael

J. Fox's kid. I really want to thank that. Yeah,

that's so Frank Welker. Who cares? A lot of people

have their own cab. Yeah, I'm sorry folks. I

know this movie like I really like it's been

a while since I've seen this but I still know

it like the back of my hand Because the funny

thing is I asked you earlier I didn't get a chance

to say this I asked you earlier when we started

as like, you know, when did you first see that?

Hey, look chief Stearns. That's wow. I didn't

catch that Barely I need you back for 30 seconds.

I wonder how much you got paid. Yep. Who knows?

So I had asked you earlier in the beginning of

the episode here at the intro, you know, when

you had seen this, whatever else, I actually

saw this in the theater and my mom hated me for

it afterwards because I would not shut up. What

you're talking about? I'm really glad he's back

that makes me feel so good He's probably the

only person in this movie that's a human not

in a suit not voicing something in a suit That

has a really good New York accent. That's authentic.

Yeah Yeah, my I don't remember if I've relayed

this story on any of our previous podcasts, but

I discovered the Ninja Turtles as a Ten -year

-old kid maybe in nine and then turned ten shortly

after you went to a friend of ours house the

family Older gentleman and somebody had bought

him the original Michelangelo action figure as

a gag gift and it was sitting on his end table

and I started playing with it because the adults

were in the kitchen talking adult and I was all

there by myself playing with it and you know

fell in love with this thing that I didn't know

what it was and you know eventually when we moved

to Grand Rapids I discovered the cartoon the

movie came out shortly after we moved here it

was like the thing that happened and tradition

started when ever one of the Ninja Turtles movies

came out we went back to their house and I we

had like a screening of the movie for this guy

and so we we watched all three of them I feel

bad now because they all got progressively worse

the first one was tolerable well the first movie

is still very classic great little really yeah

I mean It was it isn't even a product of its

time. It was ahead of its time at the time and

you know, you know, I look at these suits now

in the second movie and They're still infinitely

infinitely better than the Platinum Dune suits

and I know those that's CGI and all that but

it just Before Peter Laird sold Mirage or sold

the turtles to Nickelodeon there were they were

somebody that he was approaching somebody to

work on a film and he said what he wanted to

see was rubber suits costumes with cgi faces

just do the heads which were the real life needs

to occur yeah Oh, this scene. I love this scene.

So what we're laughing at, what we're talking

about here, folks, is to see where they're all

coming up to the anti -mutagen stuff and they

all make faces and whatever else. Mikey had a

piece of pizza in his hand and his reaction made

him drop it into the goo. And honestly, I really

would like to think that that is the one thing

that allowed Toka and Rezar to not be able to,

well, They eventually sniff it out, and I'm wondering

if it's because of the pizza smell to it. Ew,

that looks like the ooze from the Ghostbusters

2 movie. Hey, no fair! Bart Simpson glass! Finally

he's the one who understands it. Dude. Just look

at it. I've got a knife And this go here Cuz

remember Freddy Stole April warned her told her

what was going on told she told her a bunch of

stuff and He told her about the meeting and then

she told them okay. I must have been talking

over that. Thank you Hold it hold it Why will

the sports lamp How's that canister of mutagens

still full? It's a prop. I'm not gonna ask. Yeah,

no, I know. Trust me, I know. I've nitpicked

stuff like that before, but at this point I just

see it as a prop. Yeah, I totally gotta make

a mutagen because of the canister. So I can figure

out how to make it light up. Love the music in

this scene What is I can't the scene moves too

fast I can't simply doughnuts Simply going, I

was there. I was like, wait. I never read that.

Yeah, I was hoping for a Duncan reference. He

looks so angry when he says that. Told you it

wasn't gonna work Nope That was a pre eBay days

there What a postal baggage feels like You know,

I was just about to say that this movie is better

than I remembered until we get Okay, one scene

does not a movie make right? I mean come on They

really ought to bring him back though to do a

thing for the new movie. I Don't think they did

they should know but he should Do like the Stan

Bush thing and come do back do one song for the

new soundtracks. Oh No Oh Nice tie, bro. That

hair. It was 1991. There was something, one of

the pawn shows, one of the auction shows, one

of the, I don't think it was Storage Wars or,

was it Pawn Stars? I don't remember. Oh no, I

remember what it was, I think. It was a show

called, it was on Amy, I don't remember. There's

a show called Collection Intervention where this

this chick would go into different people's homes

where you know the husband or the wife had you

know too much of a good basically hoarders but

basically saying that they're collectors and

and one of them I believe was a Ninja Turtle

thing and I could be getting this completely

wrong but I do remember Villain of Vanilla Ice

was was in on it because he eventually bought

something from from them having to do with the

second movie. Later, yeah. I'll have to find

it later and see what it was. Man, I hope my

wife never intervenes. I don't think she would.

I've gotten rid of enough of it that I think

I can keep it all in one room. And this is where

we get ANSI -KINO. Don't worry, just do it. Where's

the Nike symbol when you really need it? we asphyxiated

them whoo the police they like it with their

little ponytails never mind they like it with

toka and razor out of the way we can actually

get to some foot fighting I'm fine with this

movie with them not really using a lot of the

weapons because they're still doing martial arts.

They're still punching and kicking. I mean, I

wouldn't I wouldn't gripe about it unless they're

doing like they did in the cartoon where they're

like throwing garbage can lids at people or like

they made the joke about that. Shell shocked.

At least the dancing in this movie is better

than the Coming Out of the Shells tour. And I

don't care what anyone says about the Coming

Out of the Shells stuff, the tour is horrible,

I know that, I don't care, I still love the music.

I'm not afraid to admit that. I have the cassette.

I have it on MP3. I don't think I need it. You'll

get it in a minute. Look at that pelvis thrust

there. That was not G -rated. No Is that the

same can we're gonna nitpick the hell out of

that canister is it the same one future mutants

So you've talked about your utron conspiracy

theory I really think with the small doses through

future mutants thing that they were setting up

a third movie to actually be Bebop and rocksteady

and it would have been so awesome. I really wonder

what those costumes would look like back in the

days of rubber and Rubber and vinyl. Turn it

up to 11. I can roll. He's got his hand on her

knee and he's not even her boyfriend The bill

Bellamy wannabe lookalike there was You know,

just looking at this whole outward scene, this

whole outward set, the whole thing looks rickety

as hell before we even get to the rest of the

scene. Cowabunga? Enter the WWF folks. Cuz that's

Kevin Nash as super shredder Hmm It's a super

shredder Let's not ask how the metal got mutated

Yeah, it looks cool anyway Yeah, it looks so

cool like If they had, because I know they did

this and sadly I think Nickelodeon or whoever,

playmates, stopped doing this. They had started

doing 25th anniversary figures of the turtles

and stuff and they started doing like a Turtles

Classics line. And I really wanted the Turtles

Classics line to go on at least enough to get

a Super Shredder figure because I always wanted

a toy of this guy. Because he was just like...

that's why i like this movie so much is because

of how bad ass shredder looks yes we all know

in the first movie he is very bad ass but just

this whole new design the the razor helmet from

before he got super eyes and i just absolutely

love it yeah i i i still well i had recently

picked that figure up cuz i'd just can't find

a good shredder and it is one of the better shredders

I just hope someday we get a proper movie one

shredder or mirage shredder. The original Playmates

has that weird squat going on. I picked a figure

up to mod it to straighten his legs, but you

know, then we moved. Bombing for turtles. before

i'll say it again man i love being a turtle If

they were going to set up the Utroms for a third

film, Shudder is really dead here. I think that

would have been interesting to see how they would

have pulled off crying in a third movie. Idiots.

Donatello's a spacious. Things I didn't catch

as a kid. Not as bad as I thought it was going

to be again. Yeah, you were really, really scared.

Yeah, I just refused to watch it for so long.

All right, folks, the credits are rolling, so

we're going to take a quick break. You can stop

your DVD, VHS, Betamax players now. We'll come

back with final thoughts and overall things on

the movie after this. In small doses through

future mutants. You'll have to get through us

first, pal. Yeah. Alright folks we are back on

the comic Terry for TMNT 2 secret of the ooze

Wasn't as bad as you remembered, huh? No, it

was not Which I say that like I'm disappointed

No, that just means that I don't have to hesitate

as hard letting Oliver see this and it's I don't

let him see movies that I know are crappy because

I don't want him I don't want him to like the

crappy movie and then lose his taste for good

movies Yeah, just there's there's a lot of movies

that I won't show him Yeah, because he watched

the land before time what seven I don't know

how many there are and he likes that one and

they sing and they do these ridiculous things

like no No, you have to love the first one Oliver

Ultimately, I can't control it. But you know

what I have to do my duty as a dad and censor

him but I do not have to protect him from Ninja

Turtles 2 secret of the use because that was

all right we can watch he might enjoy it more

than the first one i don't really think he likes

the first one because he's too young to get the

darkness of it yeah and i think that was the

interesting thing about the second one is that

because it is more lighthearted it is more comical

than i mean there are very serious undertones

with donatello's whole questioning of their being

and everything else and all that and you know

their future and i i do think you're right about

them maybe potentially attempting to set up future

plot lines for future movies at the time but

looking at the you know you know we looked at

the first we looked at the first one again last

year we looked at the second one now and I mean

it was just I still love the movie I don't see

why why people always hate on Turtles 2 and on

Turtles 3 I can understand because it was a little

bit of a different enel and that was two years

after this movie so Now Turtles out of the shadow

the new movie It's infinitely better than the

2014 film. I think Hmm. Yeah better that yeah

better than that one It's they better than 2016

See I don't want to compare the I don't want

to compare them that way because They're two

different animals, two different styles, two

different sets of mutants, obvious. I mean, we've

been waiting 25 years to get Bebop and Rocksteady,

and we got Bebop and Rocksteady. You know, that

was the thing where I was saying, where I think

it's one of those things where they set out to

make out of the shadows more like... The cartoon

and bring in all those things I will say right

now and this is not a spoiler I'm so happy that

they replace Krang's voice from Fred Armisen

some SNL Actor I mean I I know Fred Armisen is

a good actor and good comedian all that but that

they replaced him as the voice of Krang for Brad

Garrett I did that Brad Garrett I think was the

low point of that film for me and that that voice

it just it wasn't Krang it wasn't slimy enough

it it wasn't whiny enough all you have to do

you know i i i wish they would give the job to

pat fraley but after all well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well well well well well well well well

well well I'm glad they got Garrett. I don't

know who that guy is, Fred. He was an SNL person.

Bebop and Rocksteady, I was so worried about,

because WWE people, they're great in WWE, but.

some of their movies aren't the greatest movies

in the world. So I was really worried about Seamus

getting starring role as Rocksteady, but he did

pretty well in the human version and the mutated

version. Yeah, I enjoyed him. And the cute back

and forth, my man! And the fist bump. That was

cool. And I hear the two actors really started

hanging out and liking each other and they're

like best buddies forever now. Yeah, very cool

very cool So, yeah, that's that's the special

Saturday matinee turtles to commentary here inside

the pull bag Coming up this week. We've got Jonah

we back to talk about TMNT bebop and Rocksteady

destroy everything number three and I'll say

right now Dustin Weaver Ben Bates you guys It's

like I said in issue number two review, that

turtle team just wants to screw with our emotions.

Oh my god. Bebop and Rocksteady number three

might be the best Turtles comic of the year at

this point. I need to reread it because I've

heard you say that and I don't know if I... I'm

gonna say it like this even though it's not exactly

what I mean. I don't agree with you. But I don't

I need to go back and see if I missed something.

Yeah, you say oh my god This is great because

I it was another average comic would just to

say that it's above that no amazing It said folks

we've been doing this for three four years now

And I always have to talk him into liking stuff

with bebop and rocksteady. That's just not right

So yeah, that's what's coming up here inside

The Pull Bag. We've got Bebop and Rocksteady

Destroy Everything Number 3 coming up on Wednesday

here in the future. So make your great escape
