About this Episode

Mike and Dan return to Image Comics' I Hate Fairyland for Back Issue Classics #75, diving into issues #7 and #8. They discuss Scotty Young's escalating humor and darker storytelling as Gertrude finds an unexpected sidekick, ventures to the real world, and faces off in a video game tournament. With a guest artist on issue #8, the series continues to blend absurdist comedy, pee jokes, video game references, and surprisingly dark deals—all without losing narrative momentum.

Welcome to The Pull Bag Join us as we dig out

our latest comics and discuss them with a rotating

panel of the JCRN crew So sit back and enjoy

this week's hello and welcome to the pullbag

this is back issue classics episode seventy five

and we are returning to fairyland that's right

folks image comics i hate fairyland i am of course

tfg and mike and journeyman is comic world and

hello hey how's it going yeah it's going and

we're back for more i hate fairyland i know in

the last episode when a desk baron and i uh...

covered uh... he man the attorney war and issues

that intend i said over the next two months it's

going to be all he meant all that and beyond

but uh... not technically true so this is seven

ever since seventy five back issue classics uh...

and uh... and you know we're going back to fairyland

where retirees is seven eight from image comics

uh... this series just keeps getting better and

better yes interesting to like Looking at the

trajectory of what what's happened so far. So,

you know After the end of the first arc it seemed

like you would have this drastic change where

you know Gertrude was the king of the they're

the queen of the kingdom last issue We thought

we talked about we saw that that wasn't the case

it kind of set things back to what things were

So I was you know going into this one. My biggest

question was like, okay Well, what are they gonna

do now with this because it's like what is the

story going to be and I think we obviously got

that answer, and I think also what's really notable

about this is it does seem like Scotty Young

is finding ways to get humor in, or finding new

ways to get humor, like for this, unlike... past

issues that was violent it was bloody but it

was much more tone down in a way compared to

last issue it was uh... in the previous issues

it seems like he was kind of like resetting the

stage and trying to realize that at a point you

needed to do a little bit more he did that with

this book well between four five and six as we

said five was kind of the ending point for the

first story and six was the beginning point of

this story uh... but between issues four five

and six he he introduced uh... essentially in

archrival in nemesis four for dirt in in happy

because the queen of the time was just gonna

replace happily a dirt with occurred with happy

have happy do the whole you know journey to find

the key in all this and all that with this one

what these next two issues they essentially give

her he essentially gives her a sidekick Yeah,

but she could give a fluff less about So I Go

into that when the book started did you realize

that we weren't in fairyland? Like I was like

I didn't I was like, oh they have a 7 -eleven

in fairyland I didn't actually not until the

transportation to the dimension took place that

I realized we were in an entirely new Go back

to the real world, I guess Yeah, I wasn't sure

what was going on until the dimensional rift

opened up and I'm like, okay, that's what's going

on and I don't think you're a brony, but I know

a lot of people who are. I am so not a brony,

but I know a lot of people and I, and we've been

doing my little pony IDW coverage with my buddy

Beatles diva. She and I have been doing that.

And my fiance, Jen is a huge, my little pony

fan. And as soon as I saw it, we'll find out

later, his name is Duncan. But as soon as I saw

this kid in the dragon costume, I'm like, Hey,

look, it's spike. It's it's twilight sparkles.

Little, little sidekick there. So. That was my

first thought when I saw him. But this kid, this

kid, is all about the fairy, frizzy, super duper

special flavors. And he's gonna drink them all.

Yeah, that's an intense looking machine. The

sad part is like, it's not that exaggerated from

real life. Like the amount of craziness we have.

But I do like the Scott Young's... panel working

here where we see him you know him golfing down

these incredible therapies and of course getting

the the visual of him his eyes legitimately filling

with pee and then this is only the first of many

pee jokes that come in this comic so yeah ladies

and gentlemen as you all know if you've been

listening to pull back for the last four years

this podcast is a is explicit but we try in these

specific episodes to use scottie's way of cursing

in the book but but yeah uh... when i think of

explicit content on podcast it's not necessarily

every f bomb you can drop it's more than it's

more like innuendo or as michael wilson like

to say in you and don't uh... you know it's just

one of those things where certain p jokes are

certain fart jokes or Over overly sexualized.

It's just gonna happen and Yeah, I I wasn't sure

where this was going like I knew the kid was

gonna end up in fairyland once he went to the

outhouse and the in the portal opened up and

all that but I wasn't sure how he was going to

Further the story along for whatever Gert and

Larry were up to I was waiting for him to get

killed honestly I was too Every time we open

up with a character and there's voiceover kind

of and like it's on him But it starts with one

upon time and like oh This is the guy who's gonna

be killed in the beginning because we've seen

that happen Yeah, so and I think I think part

of it too. Like I mentioned I wasn't sure if

this was real life or not because he is in a

dragon costume and the guy working has a magic

hat on literally like a witch hat but then you

realize it's Halloween to kind of and I think

that was Scotty purposely doing that to make

you not realize that we are no longer in Fairyland

and this man is going to be a new a new person

to travel which then lends a question what causes

people to come to Fairyland and I guess that

kind of leads into what we're a lot of what happens

with this book. Yeah. and i was so not it's a

good thing i wasn't drinking anything i was so

not expecting the title of the story and i nearly

you know left so hard if i was drinking something

it would come out my nose the title of issue

seven how to drain your dragon uh... uh... that's

what i love about scotty is he can work in so

many real world any references you want And make

them the funny at least give you a really good

chuckle He's a master at puns like that's there's

no doubt about that. Yeah, absolutely So we go

to the cloaks and dagger or cloaks and daggers

kind of like that old movie And Gert and Larry

are looking for a way to get her home, get her

back to the real world. And we basically find

out that when she was queen, she had all her

little worker people do all kinds of research

to find a way to get her back home. And she came

up with a list of, that's not toilet paper, but

that's all I can think of since they're doing

so many. pee in toilet jokes. She essentially

had to come up with a list and Larry's like,

oh, that kind of reminds me of the list we used

to have. Sorry about that. Yeah, and I do love

the name of it, of course. And again, going back

to the puns, seeing him use the MacGuffin Paper

Company as, and of course, providing plot details.

And that's the thing is like, he's calling himself

out, I think, with us. It's very, you know, the

meta type of humor. within this and he's like

obviously he's kind of poking fun at this whole

idea and it's a book that never takes itself

seriously even with this so i mentioned like

i wasn't sure i didn't know where story wise

it was gonna go and we get that answer quickly

like you said she does all this research we see

that okay now they're trying to find ways to

find her way back and now she has a new list

to go off of so tons of different uh... she she'd

like uh... liam neeson is a fan of using less

to get jobs done uh... i assume it's a take -in

reference there is that one of the list right

uh... okay it's been so long since i've seen

schindler's list but yeah i didn't realize liam

neeson was in that also like to short reference

where he was in that okay and there's a uh...

he doesn't get spirit we talked about him loving

less because it should have left i'm not doing

it just google it's fine so she tries to ask

the bartender for a favor but apparently when

she was queen the bartender uh... get uh... you

know his his ale tax raised fifty percent uh...

and he's barely able to hold on to the place

in You know, she did try to talk to the guy she

didn't outright kill him as soon as he said something

to her and then of course, you know Larry's like

I'm proud of you for trying since she asks for

her axe and then all hell breaks loose yeah,

the violence was a little more toned down here,

but Not that I necessarily needed to be toned

down, but of course we're still gonna get a man

chopped to death with it with With an axe because

it's a fairy land and you least need to do that

once purge view So we didn't get that which of

course is always enjoyable. Like she says it's

like riding a bike It's a very scary and morbid

bike It's a bike out of hell Whatever I put a

beat loop joke in there it works. Oh boy So they

they find a lead on the collector and as soon

as they say that I know exactly where this is

going I I didn't know what was gonna happen or

whatever, but I'm just like the collector like

oh, no, they're really He's really going to sit

here and make fun of people who collect things.

Oh boy See I was thinking like a because he's

written guardians like rocket raccoon and Groot

I thought he was gonna be some sort of take on

that character of the collector That's where

my my head was going when he was introducing

that character or introducing that idea yeah,

so they make this journey to this house and She

looks at the house and basically says, it's like

Frankenstein fluffed the house and that's the

love child. I'm not sure if Dr. Frank... People

always get that confused. It's Dr. Frankenstein

and the monster. The monster's name is not Frankenstein,

people. Yeah, she's technically only five, so

we can let that pass, I guess. No, I know. It's

so good. So I guess I didn't even take it as

that, as a knock against those collecting things.

Maybe I wasn't really paying attention enough,

but it didn't really even cross my mind. I mean,

I don't know if it's so much as a knock against

people who collect things or toy collectors in

general. This weasel character has, because essentially

he looks like a weasel to me. He has so many

various toys from the real world. You know, oh

flip, it's a Sally spit up, and then Sally spits

up. You know, so for me it's like, oh hey, is

he... Trying to homage the fact that most of

geek culture a lot of geek culture is toy collecting

nowadays Or is he basically poking fun at that?

I'm not sure I don't dislike it I'm just kind

of questioning what joke here is supposed to

be because it's not outright Said or made fun

of yeah, I guess I'd even I looked at more as

it just a plot device of getting a guy who has

taken a bunch of stuff from from the The you

know the real world and put it together because

you see a lot of different takes on things. There's

like a Like even in the background you see like

something looks like spongebob spur pants to

like, you know Just random gifts and stuff like

that. And yeah, it to me almost looked more of

a hoarder who doesn't necessarily like It's not

like he was collecting a specific thing or anything

like that It was just like let me just get all

this garbage but I could see I could see where

that's coming from because it gets you could

kind of because he throughout this has taken

aspects of different key culture comic book culture

and and reflected on that so i i don't think

your your commentary is not warranted i think

that's a good point what is funny here is going

because i read these two issues very quickly

before we started this to make sure i had them

read and got the story but going back and looking

at some of the finer details uh as of this recording

by the time this releases it would have already

passed but we just released uh One of our top

100 animated character teasers Gumby versus Casper

and in the panel where where Mr Weaselhead here

says it all began around the turn of the third

Pretendery oh That just breaks my brain. I found

this small toy left behind by a child in the

real world after that I became obsessed with

adding to my collection Now that, just those

storylines, that last part after that I became

obsessed with adding to my collection. That's

what some toy collectors end up being like, where

they have to add everything to their collection,

but he's holding a, what I assume is a really

effed up looking Gumby doll. Could be it looks

kind of like a rabbit. I don't know but it certainly

if you take the ears off it That is that is a

gummy looking thing. So yeah Yeah, I'm not sure

So she wants him to find Her home You know and

you know, he wants to make a deal with her and

we'll get to see until later what what his request

was but he whispers it to her and she basically

says that's pretty dark purpose but you have

a deal you know uh... uh... uh... and again folks

for us on the pool bag i don't think any child

should be reading this series this series is

not for kids it's for adults who remember these

childlike times but at the same time scotty even

tries to make it not necessarily for kids but

almost pc enough where larry says was all that

was free about he didn't ask you to do anything

appropriate rights uh... uh... and basically

what they got what purpose wants is that she

is a dying he wants to basically uh... taxidermy

her essentially Yeah, that was like wow, that's

that's dark for you for this like this book has

had a lot like yeah He really upped it again

like I'm saying he we had a lot of physical humor

in the books You know a lot of like you're chopping

up, you know that that's been great But like

that it was like, okay and that upped it a little

bit when it's like yeah He wants to you know,

if I die stuff me and put me, you know, like

like a taxidermist but with a good so that's

and that's it is as soon as i saw this uh...

where she says he said having an actual person

would basically complete the collection alls

i can think of is all those life -size things

that you would see like sharper image and stuff

like life -size spider -man life -size this light

that's all i can think of and he takes her to

a van with a giant rocket on its back yeah at

first i thought it was a satellite because i

thought it was like someone living there okay

yeah well see i think the things on top of it

like a little yeah plunger looking thing on the

very top like right next to the rock the rock

in the back that could be as i don't know that

could be a satellite who knows now but yeah you're

you're right it's almost like a If a hippie designed

the Batmobile, that would be kind of what that

would look like. If the Batmobile and the mystery

machine had a child, this is what it would be.

Yeah, assuming the mystery machine had many shrooms

in it at the time. Well, you know, Scooby and

Shaggy do like their shrooms, so. So he he basically

tells her that this you know does not run on

You know, they don't have anything Essentially

don't have petrol gasoline from From from the

real world and apparently this thing is fueled

by dragon water if she asks him but does that

mean larry's poor larry we need another issue

where we have like we had that whole issue earlier

where she was passed out larry ended up going

through an entire lifetime we need another one

of those cuz i i want more larry but he basically

says no he means dragon ways I'm like, how the

hell are they going to find a dragon in Fairyland?

Because I wasn't thinking about earlier. I wasn't

even thinking about the kid in the Halloween

costume. But then this giant thing from the world,

from the top of the sky, comes down and there's

a moon shaped, well, moon -crested door to outhouse

that appears. Yeah. Well, once they introduced,

like, oh, it's Dragon P. I'm like, oh, OK. And

they thought it was back to the kid who was eye

-filling with pee. Yeah. as he went to an outhouse

which also makes you wonder seven eleven basically

that had an outhouse uh... that's got to be the

most disgusting bathroom in the history of the

world uh... but yeah we are friends me getting

makes his triumph return is it a movie or a cartoon

or a tv series i don't remember there's a movie

somewhere where somebody asks to use the restroom

I think it's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,

where they ask to use the restroom, and he's

like, okay, but nobody's cleaned in there in

years, and they open the door, and all these

bugs and roaches and whatever else just kind

of spread out from the light of opening the door.

Oh, God. I thought there was an Animediax cartoon

about that, with Wacko being... Potty, potty,

potty, potty, potty, potty, potty, potty. Careful.

I haven't cleaned it in a year. Think yeah, that's

what it is. That's that's what it is. It's um

It's potty emergency. I knew I remembered it

from somewhere. That's what it is Wacko asks

him. Yeah, but he hasn't cleaned in there. I

can't go potty. Yeah, that's exactly what it

is Wow, I can't believe I screwed that up I think

I mean I think there are there have been many

movies that have kind of one about that idea

We have a disgusting looking bathroom and stuff.

I mean most infamously, you know something like

train spotting Yeah, it's an idea that that it's

been used multiple places so they say does that

look like a dragon to you? yes, yes he does I'll

get the hose and a funnel thank god they did

this off panel I don't think the series could

have handled this if it was on panel I just don't

think it would work but thankfully it was off

panel that he has to grab the the dragon kids

pee um i i just like love how matter of fact

it was it's like okay i'll get it it's like the

fact that you had a kid dragon dropped down for

you know that's not a big deal it's just like

whatever just a normal day so that's i just love

the matter of fact way that he yeah he reacts

to the situation And the kid basically is like,

okay, I'm done peeing in that gas tank. Can I

go home now? Yeah, and then that leads to The

attempt to finally leave by killing by taking

the hippie Batmobile jetpack and not successfully

Flying through making their trip. Yes And looking

at the panel where where Purvis says good luck

Gertrude I really hope you make it home or die

as the The batmobile batmobile mystery machine

is rolling off Is it just me or do the boosters

remind me the boosters remind me of Larry's face

for some odd reason I don't know why it's just

weird Maybe I'm just weird or whatever. No, I

didn't so So they go off this cliff and it doesn't

end so well. So, fiery, fiery explosion. She's

died before, will she survive again? Yeah, and

of course we get a little bit of a return from

the sun who apparently is... still alive. It's

one of the celestial bodies she hasn't killed

yet, I guess. Yet is the operative term. I still

want a medical update on the moon. I think he's

dead, but still. Oh, the sun. I don't think that

was enough pee. Yeah, and a lot of pee jokes.

The sequence of them going back and forth with

the pee was legitimately, the more you read it,

the more I'm like, I think I might... Drinking

water at the time and like I gotta probably stop

this because I don't know if I'll get through

it without having to go Yeah, no, it's uh, yeah,

I Because we do these issue we do these reviews

two at a time folks It's been a while since we've

been able to do this. So even though i remembered

what happened in issue five and six i was still

excited to see what was going to go on these

issues and i had no idea whether or take the

story issues seven is really solid uh... like

you said for some people that might be a little

too queasy with the p humor uh... you may or

may not want to read this one uh... but issue

seven is absolutely hilarious absolutely loaded

scottie's art is great His writing is still so

spot on. I eventually do want to get to his Rocket

and Groot stuff. I just haven't. I just don't.

I don't have enough time in the day to do everything

I want to do. I don't have enough time in each

month to do everything that I want to get to,

folks. Overall, issue seven for me. I'm going

to give it a four and a half. What about you?

Yeah, I also think this is a good, like, if you've

not read any of the past issues and you want

to just start with issue seven, I think you could

and kind of get everything because it is resetting

or restarting a new arc here. So I think it's

also a good, like, launching on point if you

want to, didn't want to go back and read it all.

I would recommend doing that. But I actually

I'll go four and a half as well. I think it's.

Well, a good mixture of different types of humor,

like I mentioned. It was resetting the stage

and it's continuing this going. I love the running

jokes it had and enjoyed how he was able to expand

his way to find ways to make this book funny.

So that's been really good. I'll go four and

a half as well. This has been a great series

throughout. This might be maybe the most, not

the most flashy issue, but maybe arguably the

strongest. Yeah. And then we get to issue eight,

a story and art done by Scotty Young. Apparently

he's a guest artist on this issue, Jeffrey Chamba

Cruz. So I wanted to mention that up front before

we started issue eight. But issue eight essentially

leaves off where issue seven was with. With well,

no, it doesn't leave off with issue seven. It

basically starts a home Wow, I forgot about that.

So last issue that ended with them exploding

not knowing what the heck happened and Now we

open up issue eight to some fortune teller looking

guy Yeah, so I think at this point like we've

seen with past issues where she would leave off

in the cliffhanger of someone Like someone's

gonna come to kill her and at least the first

three or four So I think they're just like, you

know, she's not dead. So they just kind of skipped

the whole and we We're kind of just dropped in

a whole new situation and a lot of story actually

has taken place From in between last issue and

this issue that we haven't seen with but I think

it's good It just keeps it going and it's not

like there's anything here That is confusing

or out of place you you can kind of tell what

they're trying to do because uh Their mission

to stay the same that just obviously what they

tried before didn't work. So now they're trying

something new Going back to the macguffin list,

of course Absolutely. So they go to this fortune

teller during this series Larry tells her well,

she says to larry enough about this mother fudger.

I want to hear about what my future holds He

doesn't have to read the candies to know your

future. Spoiler. You'll be wearing no shades

because it isn't so bright. And she tells him,

I would love to killpunch that sack you call

a head, but I'm afraid you would think Christmas

came early. I have been asking Santa to put me

out of my misery for a long while, stupid jolly

pacifist. That was a good joke. There's a lot

of stuff coming up in this issue that I just

I Found myself cackling at so much so as per

usual. It's all about making deals here in fairyland

and He asks her Let's see she says mr. I'm gonna

be able to murder this dummy, but I'll put it

too in your biscuit without a second thought

If the fortune telling is over, I heard there

was a... Oh, so... Basically, she's gonna trade

him something for the golden coin. And what she

trades him is a new pair of peepers. And apparently...

The look on Gert and Duncan's all of their faces

Gert Duncan and Larry is just priceless and then

we see why and this fortune -teller. Oh my god

Yeah And so they give him the eyes and they get

the coin and of course What's the coin for folks

the coin is for a giant video game, but the coin

itself has one up on the side. Oh Come on now

And essentially this issue turns into a giant

video game hell right now on their way to the

giant arcade machine they go through a series

of You know how much farther this thing is pretty

heavy I agree to let you tag along with us But

only if you you know don't suck once we pass

the grumpy gusts We'll swim the soda sea and

cross the happy dip dunes. And there it is. We

essentially now have a Tron reference the rest

of the game. Well, at least once they first get

there, they put the coin in and she gets digitized

in. Yeah, and that's that's trauma right there

is being digitized and wow She actually looks

normal and I assume this is the point where the

guest artist takes over. Oh, yeah, definitely.

Okay I think he's done like past like variant

covers like we've seen variant covers with this

type of design previously Right, but this is

the first time that he actually were Scott Young

didn't draw pages in the book, which was That's

cool. I did not know that coming in. I was like,

wow, that's interesting. Yeah. Well, I think

that's really cool because it's one of those

things where, yes, this is Scotty Young's baby.

Yes, he's the one that should be drawing most

of the... Normal world and fairyland world stuff,

but if it's a world within fairyland like, you

know Like this is I think that's cool that they

brought a guest artist on I think that's absolutely

hilarious Oh, yeah, it gives us an entire like

this sequence a new flavor to it and it adds

it adds some intrigue because it looks different

and makes a lot of this, you know, like I loved

a lot of the varying covers he did I thought

it was a great design. So it was really fun to

see it in played out in this world and And also

kind of makes you wonder, okay, now she's in

this new universe type of thing. Does she have

the power she once did? And it stakes it raised

and it's just a lot of fun. This was a really

pleasant surprise. Again, he's finding new ways

to keep this book fresh, which I was my biggest

worry coming into this book is like, oh yeah,

it's great. I don't know if this would last past

five or six issues, four or five issues, but.

By doing things like this with Book 8, I think

he's able to continue it for much longer and

keep the joke going. Yep. And what's to come

in the next few panels here, folks, is basically

it's a giant video game, so guess what? Everybody

has to fight everybody. So it's like Street Fighter

and Mortal Kombat combined. If you want some

interesting talk on Street Fighter and Mortal

Kombat, go listen to the Cinema Geeks, folks,

because wow. Oh, just wait until we talk about

House of the Dead. Is that a video game movie

or is that a regular movie? No, House of the

Dead is a video game movie. It was a Sega arcade

game. But yeah, so basically like you said, Mortal

Kombat. And I love all the reference characters

that we get. We get like a steroid up Mario with

Cross with Santa kind of looking guy. Yeah, someone

who obviously looks like Goku from or one of

the you know people from Dragon Ball Z so that

in some Sailor Moon type of character so like

definitely a lot of Hints and references throughout

this like you mentioned Tron and then that continues

with this. So that was a lot of fun to see Yeah,

the D pixel I the D the D resing effect once

like what I love is the 47 hits and all the hit

comp all the All the hit combo things when it

said fatal blow I'm just I'm just waiting for

him to do the I'm just waiting for him to do

a Mortal Kombat joke and of course it comes later

with What is it? What is it face is it? Where

is it here? It's got face fatality. I was waiting

for the fatality. That's what I was waiting for.

But yeah, no, I love this. I think this is hilarious.

So she beats everybody. And now she has to face

the boss, which apparently the boss, according

to her, is the guy riding on the giant pumpkin

coach. Because hey, look, it's Cinderella Princess.

pretty pretty princess and pretty pretty princess

um gert just gets her attitude up like she always

does like oh please i can take this and next

thing you know she's being derezzed and i i love

the splash page of her just getting the crap

kicked after that like it's just one page of

just like fury of punches and talked about the

hit combo and it's up there and uh that's just

a great looking page Yeah, the two million royal

rampage. Yeah, it looks like Take that and like

you talked about finishers. It does like like

one of those moves you would do in some of the

video games We're just things going saying that

I love that. It's great work Yep, absolutely

And then of you know, so we get all these cool

video game name references when gert's fighting

everybody else but once the purdy pretty princess

comes in with royal rampage she then goes hard

for ideal combo purdy punch respect the crowd

for a couple of people fancy fatality uh... pretty

princess wins which means the boss or the the

guy doing the fights gets to keep the dragon

She's exiled out of the game. Yay! Poor Gert.

Within that we didn't mention that her new sidekick

was basically put up as the bet and if she lost

the ruler of this new world would get him. So

of course she didn't care and not only because

she didn't really care about him but because

she didn't think she would lose. So now the question

becomes, okay, does she go back? Yeah Yes, yeah

the whole thing of I think she says I'm in the

I don't give a fluff club Do you belong to that

and Duncan the Dragons like no and just you see

the defeat on the kids face It's like damn talk

about a sacrificial lamb or a sacrificial dragon.

Holy crap. Yeah You know, at the end of this,

we've got them walking away and Gertrude's eardrums

apparently have been blown out and she can't

hear any of Larry's sick puns or sick burns and

that's kind of how this one ends and we get kind

of a gallery of the couple of variant covers.

At the end here, and do we get a preview of next

issue? Yeah, we do. So I Hate Fairyland number

10. This is what it says at the bottom of the

page. Will Gert be able to live with herself

after leaving poor Duncan Dragon behind? Yes,

of course she will. This will pretty much be

the least harmful thing she's ever done. Really,

Gert leaving Duncan behind could actually be

seen as a good thing. You've read enough of this

comic to know that Gert and the long lifespans

of people around her do not go together. She

does need a break though. And what's more relaxing

than a night of poker with some dark wizards

and witches? You'll find out when you take out

your money and make it my money by buying the

next issue We so I get we gotta find a way to

interview Scotty young cuz oh my I have to talk

to this guy This is so friggin hilarious. Everything

he does is just so damn funny. Yeah, it's great

and like I know we mentioned the Rocket and Groot

stuff, which is good, but I think what he broke

out with was his Wizard of Oz comics. Those,

I would say, were really worth reading, and maybe

even before his Rocket Raccoon stuff. But yeah,

this is, he has no, not no shame, but like no

filter. He just like, he just does whatever he

wants. I think that's the beauty of having a

comic like I Am Very Land With's image. He can

kind of do whatever he wants, and he's great

at it. Yeah, I mean it's pretty much he can say

whatever the hell he wants. It doesn't matter

I mean in the earlier issues that we've already

reviewed He's you know made fun of you know the

way comics have been over the last 70 80 90 years

And you know he's taken potshots at both DC and

Marvel You know which is fun and funny and honestly

this series is All about the jokes for me. I

mean, yeah We should be paying attention to the

story, but the storytelling is through the jokes

So it's kind of hard not to not focus on the

story but focus on the jokes more Because it's

just so damn fun I don't think I've laughed at

a comic like this and and there isn't a comic

like this one Anywhere else on the planet, which

is so great. It's like they compliment each other

really well. Like it's never too You know, it's

not plotless, but it's also not too overly plot

heavy So I think that he has he strikes a good

balance where he keeps every he keeps it funny

and light throughout But there's also at least

a reason to laugh beyond the fact. He's just

making jokes There's you know, a lot of good

character jokes and I think which what's made

it last as long as it has and this is the Eighth

issue and like these last two issues I think

may have been the best work of it so far, which

is saying a lot. Yeah, I mean the whole thing

So far for me, I I okay. Yeah, I questioned one

thing earlier in this episode about you know,

the the whole thing with the what was it the

Yeah, yeah, yeah the collecting thing but just

cuz I questioned one little aspect of one issue

out of eight issues Oh, no, like there are other

comics that we've reviewed in the pullback folks.

If you listen last week to the eternity war Issues

nine and ten. It's The art is wonderful in those

books, but the story Once they started introducing

King Hiss and the snake man I just lose all interest

because I just don't care about those carrot

thought the snake man characters from human but

it just the story just seems to be all over the

place in those issues, but in this series because

it isn't Don't want to say it was comics. It's

not a mainstream comic company They are but when

when most people think of mainstream high dollar

comics or comic companies you think DC or Marvel

and because this isn't DC or Marvel they don't

have to necessarily adhere to So many I don't

want to say standards and practices, but So many

maybe advertisers. I don't know. It's just so

refreshing to have something that you can read

And just basically have the author not pull his

punches. It's the benefit of having something

that's creator -owned. He can kind of do whatever

he wants and doesn't have to worry about putting

in... storylines for major events that are going

on or like fit into some sort of universe or

characters that have been around for 30 years.

There's a lot of benefits to that, I still like

that as well, but for a book like this, you know,

it does allow him opportunity to kind of take

things and ways he would tell stories in something

like Rocket Raccoon, but expand upon it and do

it like, you know, break all the rules he wasn't

able to break with those books, so. Yeah. And

when I said earlier that I want to read the Rocket

Raccoon and the Groot stuff, I just assume, because

it's Scottie Young, he's going to take the same

approach as maybe James Gunn did in Guardians

of the Galaxy and have Rocket be that sarcastic

asshole that everybody loves. The series that's

going on right now, it's been him and someone

else, and he hasn't written a lot. I love Scottie

Young most of the time. I feel like his best

work is when he's writing and drawing the book.

If he's not drawing it, I don't feel as strong

as I do when he is because I feel like some people

just like his sense of humor needs him visually

as well and not all comic artists are able to

pull it off. But this I think is this and what

he did with Wizard of Oz comics are probably

the best work he's done so far. All right, so

issue nine or not issue nine. I'm sorry issue

eight. What would you give it? I think you know

to me. This is perhaps the best issue I love

the you know that in the she was I was legitimately

surprised with the use of the I didn't even realize

there was a guest artist and I loved the video

game aspect and I Continues to be great. So I

actually would give this five out of five. I

think it's just It accomplishes everything it

set out to do and more. So I love this. Yeah,

I'm right there with you at a five out of five.

It was just so great, so fun. And I only even

mentioned the fact that there was a guest artist

because this is Scottie Young, folks, and this

is I Hate Fairyland. If you are not reading the

intro page, not just for the creator thing, but

for the like the preamble of the story so far,

you're missing out. because his story so far

are just so hilarious. And then of course, you

know, the next issue kind of thing, as I read

the role for issue 10 there earlier, or not issue,

yeah, I don't know, whatever. You know what I

mean? So, yeah, absolutely loving. I hate Fairland,

five out of five, absolutely. We're going to

take a quick break, come back to close the show

after this, because we have to talk about a certain

something that you'll hear now. Our answer, Gamora,

is not. You just need to find a woman who is

pathetic. Like you. Thanks, buddy. Do you need

a hug? articles are back here inside the pull

back and since we did mention uh... rocket group

didn't know that stuff in marvel and all that

talking about scotty young uh... the gardens

the galaxy volume two trailer has her teaser

not trailer teaser has come out and for me i

i thought the whole thing was funny and great

i was a little late to the guardians of the galaxy

anyone has been listening to any of my podcasts

you'll know if it's all up in my face i tend

to just step back and just wait to experience

it myself i've said this many times over the

last few months and over the last few years but

i did eventually see guardians of the galaxy

probably two or three months after it got released

love the first movie i thought it was done so

well I don't have the same excitement that everybody

else on the internet has for the whole franchise,

because I didn't know. I mean, I knew of them,

but I didn't know. I wasn't reading the old comics

or anything like that. So when the Volume 2 teaser

came out, I'm like, oh, OK, sure, yeah. I love

the first movie, so let's see what the second.

You got Star -Lord and Drax hugging. But by far

for me, the best is the end, when Rocket and

Baby Group show up. That was hilarious. Yeah,

I was I was wondering if that like how long if

they were gonna keep him a baby for the entire

thing or not I guess we'll wait and see For me

though, I mean, there's not a huge amount to

go off of I mean they of course use the classic

song from last time that I was wondering if they

would introduce new music considering how the

last one ended. Maybe that's for future future

ones and like it's The interaction between tracks

and Chris Pratt or Starlord was great. I like

that They're dynamic. I really I was hesitant

to Batista in that role, but like he is really

nailing that character So I'm excited. I mean,

there's a lot of questions I still have because

I know of where the plot is supposed to be headed

I know Russell's in it and he's playing ego the

living planet and that's a question to me like

how they're gonna pull that off because that's

that's kind of crazy so I'm excited for it the

trailer really didn't really affect me one way

or another because there wasn't really much there

the I'm excited to see these characters again,

but I don't know nothing really stood out. Yeah,

it just looked like a you know Reaffirming of

everything I liked about the last movie, but

I and I like Guardians I didn't love it as much

as a lot of people did I had some issues with

it? Narratively and overall and but I thought

it was really funny and there's what it was definitely

unique and looked gorgeous so I'm definitely

gonna see it, but this trailer was just I don't

know, I need a little bit more to get excited

about for, especially this week when you had

this come out and you had the Logan trailer come

out, which I felt had a lot more substance to

it. Yeah. Well, the Logan trailer was, that was

the Red Band trailer, right? So the Logan trailer

was more... Hey, look, this is everything you're

going to get. Whereas Guardians is, and I believe

James Gunn is like this a lot, is give a little

bit to get a lot later. Because I think, I think,

I could be wrong, but I think when they first

put out the first teaser for the original, the

first film, it was like this, where it was like,

oh, hey, this is a little tease. This is what

you're going to get. And then that first trailer.

That first full trailer dropped and the internet

exploded with joy. Yeah, if I remember correctly

the first trailer was legitimately them just

going through each character In a one -by -one

with the the Nova Corps and then he's like these

guys a bunch of a -holes Okay, if that if I remember

correctly that the first really didn't have much

either. So it's the same thing I felt like we're

the first really last time was really just kind

of saying like hey this guy These this team is

gonna be different. This one is more so like

hey remember those people you liked. Well, they're

back again, which is fine It's like you said,

it's definitely more of a teaser than a full

trailer And if I have a feeling it was kind of

like they wanted to get something together as

with dr Strange to attach it Doctor Strange is

coming out soon. Is there going to be a Guardians

after scene in that? I don't know what the after

scene was going to attach to. I guess it would

attach to Spider -Man because Spider -Man is

the next movie after. That's true. That's only

a speculation because there's Spider -Man next

year and then Guardians. It's gonna do it for
