About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Joe Reed dive deep into IDW's four-issue Turtles in Time miniseries, exploring the time-travel adventure that spans prehistoric times, feudal Japan, pirate-era seas, and a dystopian future. They discuss Ross Campbell's striking artwork, the emotional weight of meeting their past and future selves, and how the series builds meaningful character depth while maintaining the fun spirit of the original arcade game it's based on.

Hi, this is Bobby Curnow, Chief Turtle Editor

at IDW Publishing, and you are going to have

a shell of a good time inside the pull bags.

Welcome to The Pull Bags, back issue classics.

Join us as we talk about comics from yesteryear,

from DC, Marvel, and more. So open your ears

to hear our discussion. of the older continuities,

as the back -issue classics are also what's in

the pullback. Welcome to the pull bag. This is

yet again another back issue classics I am your

host TF Joe and Mike and joining me is Joe Reed.

Hello, sir. Hello and hello to our listeners

How are you? I'm well, I don't think there's

anything I could complain about No, not really

and if you did no one would listen The complaint

department is closed Yeah, I'm doing pretty well

myself I've had some problems keeping up with

content for the poll bag because stuff is just

getting away from me. I'm trying to keep November

being Punisher Month, and I don't even know if

we're gonna be able to do a daring December for

Daredevil this year I just don't know I have

been hit over the head financially for a lot

of things the last three and a half four months

and I'm still getting my regular digital comics

that I get and stuff but Adding to that is probably

not an option and I know you're gonna suggest

a library The problem is I don't drive and at

this point neither does my mom because of her

health issues. So it's like The library doesn't

always stay current either. There's not a lot

of new new stuff there, you know so I The pullback

at this point. I'm trying to I've got this we

get this schedule where it's it's turned into

a giant joke behind the scenes here at the pullback

ladies and gentlemen because right now and i

will not do this but right now i have for october

uh we we were going to do several giant size

episodes which are going to be countdowns like

top 10 favorite uh comic artists favorite comic

uh writers etc etc I can't do countdowns this

year, folks. I really wanted to. I was super

excited to, but we're getting into the point

of it's October. We're a month away from holiday

season because Halloween is not a holiday. You

know, we're a month away from Thanksgiving and

Christmas and everyone tends to shut down around

the holidays because everyone wants to spend

time with their families and everything else.

And that's fine. And I understand that. So the

countdowns are going to have to wait until sometime

next year. We will be doing Some sort of like

2014 year of comics countdown. I don't know how

we're gonna be doing that, but we'll be doing

that but right now We're only in the second week

of October and So far I have three releases coming

out this week for the bull bag next week I have

two and the week after that I have to for the

fifth and final week of the pull bag right now

for October I have close to I'm not doing this

ladies and gentlemen I'm just saying what what

I have written down I have close to eight releases

in one day I'm not doing eight releases in one

day but that's how I gotta work around all my

numbering my damn numbering that I like to go

by so I gotta work this out and see how I can

get this done I'm not sure how it might end up

being that December is Punisher Month, honestly.

I really have no idea how I'm gonna do this,

but we are here to talk about that age -old video

game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Turtles in

Time. I wish we were talking about the video

game. Well, we can. It's not like it's a, you

know, I mean it kind of ties into the comics

since they pretty much use the same kind of format

as far as four issues or four different time

zones. So I mean, I don't see what would be hurting

the talking about the video game here, at least

in the intro. You know, since that's really where...

This really started, right? It started with Turtles

4, Turtles in Time, correct? The time travel?

The Turtles have time traveled before, I think.

Gosh, what was first, the third movie or the

fourth video game? I'd like to think it was the

fourth video game, but it's probably the third

movie. I mean, hell, that's where the scepter

comes from. Yeah, and they, that was kind of

neat to see them pull that. I mean, they can't

pull a lot of characters from the movies, but

man, there's nothing that says art direction.

Yeah, no, nothing at all. Alright, so when did

you first, did you play the arcade version of

Turtles in Time or did you play the port for

SNES first? I probably played, you know, it's

hard to tell what one came first because I had

the theater that I went to all the time that

had it had the arcade unit and I had a Super

Nintendo where I'm sure that was a game that

I bought as early as I possibly could well mom

it would have been because I was probably 12

13 years old maybe when that came out so I don't

know which one I played first but the Super Nintendo

that was a pretty faithful arcade port on that

version of it somebody's starting a snowmobile

no it's a motorcycle yeah I have a neighbor who

pulls out of his house at one o 'clock in the

morning and decides to floor it. You know what,

thanks dude. I don't know if it's people that

are guests of the building down the street here

or what the deal is, but this only started happening

about two and a half weeks ago. So, no clue.

Anyway, you were saying about the SNES port.

I think it's a pretty faithful port. would need

to go back there and play it again to see if

there are any added levels or subtracted levels.

I know the NES one, that arcade port, there were

added things on the NES version to make up for

the fact that they didn't get good graphics.

Oh, there was a regular Nintendo port for it

as well? No, the regular Nintendo port was for

the arcade game. Oh, it was like the same kind

of character models. It looked similar to Turtles

in Time, but it was just, you know, a sequel

to one or the other. Yeah, I remember, I think

I mentioned this on one of the other episodes

I forget, or I might have mentioned it to you

off air. We used to have at the Kingston Independence

Mall in Kingston, Massachusetts, there used to

be a Nintendo Center. Really? Yes, I loved this

place. I spent hours standing in front of these

things. I spent hours just playing Donut Plains

in Super Mario World while my mom and family

shopped the rest of the mall. I just stand there

for hours. I didn't know that there were any

Nintendo stores outside of Washington State and

New York City. Well, no, no, no, this isn't a

store. This is a Nintendo Center. It's basically...

You take one of those middle -of -the -mall kiosks...

Uh -huh. Kind of things and it's got TVs in it

It's got the systems in it like on the backside

so the employees can change the cartridges and

all that stuff And it was a video center that

you could go to right in the middle of the mall

Just stop by play for free for you know, but

basically play look like a demo level I don't

remember how they They locked it or anything

like that if they locked levels or if they were

just demo I don't even know if they made demo

cartridges, but I only remember playing uh...

don't planes one on the mario cart but i do remember

uh... playing up to alicat blues and actually

up to uh... the technodrome on turtles in time

for s and s while i am because i because i remember

walking by this thing one day and i'm like hey

he just threw a foot soldier shredder what's

going on here i stopped waited for my turn and

bam i was hooked I love Turtles in Time. It's

one of the best Turtles games of all time at

this point. I think so. Yeah, absolutely. All

right, we are going to take a quick break. Would

you say this first issue is prehistoric Turtlesaurus?

If we're comparing to a level of the video game,

yes. Yeah, yes. Okay, so you're going to hear

a music selection from prehistoric Turtlesaurus,

and we'll be back after this. Issue one of this

four -issue miniseries, Turtles in Time, from

IDW. First of all, the four issues, three out

of the four, are written by Paul Allor. I think

we've mentioned him before? That name sounds

familiar to me. He worked on... Yep. Utram Empire

and the villains micro series in the the regular

micro series you're working on several of those

So he's responsible for walking through the turtles

universe universe depositing Nuggets that will

eventually blossom into giant story elements

for Tom Waltz Pretty much. Yeah All right, so

three out of the four issues are written by Paul

Allor That's one, two, and four. Issue number

three is written by Eric Burnham. Eric Burnham

has done a number of other, you know, he did

several of the microseries. He is one of the

core authors on the new animated adventures,

IDW comic. He also did a couple of the villain

stuff and he did Secret History of the Foot Clan.

So that's his pedigree. And then for the... art

on these issues. Issue one is done by Ross Campbell

and David Peterson. Issue two is David Peterson

and Cheryl Paul Wilson III. Issue three is Ben

Bates, best art ever. And then issue four is

your buddy Dan Duncan and David Peterson on backup

I guess. David Peterson did the covers, the main

covers for the whole series and as you read over

those lists I was comparing them to my stack

of single issues here and those names don't match.

Really? Yeah, so... Well, it could be a comixology

thing. Yeah, it could be a comixology thing,

too. I actually had a buddy of mine, TV's Mr.

Neil, every now and then I'll have him do this

for me. I am no graphic artist whatsoever. I

cannot create images to save my life. I just

can't. I can create masterpieces with audio and

and all that kind of stuff and put in cool audio

bits But I cannot do anything with imagery, so

I had him take eight covers the regular four

covers Put those into one image and the subscription

covers and put those into one image So we have

two different images for those that'll be in

the post looking They look amazing so but we

have issue number one as I said And to zoom in

here, thankfully, comicsology allows you to zoom.

Turtles in Time. The turtles recently met a good

-natured interdimensional time traveler named

Renette. Don't remember that story? Well, it

happened in TMNT Annual 2014, but due to a time

malfunction, that book isn't out yet. It is now.

Time malfunctions are not unusual when it comes

to Renette, as the turtles have discovered. All

you need to know is that the adventure seemingly

ended with the turtles safe back at home. Alas,

when it comes to Rinette, nothing is ever quite

that easy. I should also like to say for our

listeners that it has been confirmed from Kevin

Eastman's lips that it is pronounced Rinette

with a hard T. There's been a lot of debate on

that, but it's Rinette with a hard T. So you

are right, sir. That's what I thought it was.

You're right. You're right. Yeah, other people

out there in the world might be saying, hey,

Mike's saying it wrong. It's totally Renée. The

T is silent. No, it's not silent. So we're saying

it correctly, listeners. Yeah, it's Renée. Yeah,

because it can't be Renée because, OK, yes, some

Renées spell their name R -E -N -E. Yeah, well.

This is America, dammit. This is like she's re

-netting something. That's... I don't know if

that's possible. According to the page here on

Comixology, Paul Allor is the writer and Ross

Campbell is the artist. The colorist is Bill

Crabtree. So there is that. That is indeed...

I do think there was a correction in one of these

issues that says they screwed up on my covers.

the names on it, so as we go through this, I'll

track that down. So this opens up with a secondary,

okay, we have the main cover, we have the opening

little narration, like, you know, story so far

thing with the writers and artists, and then

we have an image of Raph stabbing some god -awful

thing in Mikey in the background. And it says

Turtles in Time. You have that on your issue,

right? No, I don't. You don't? No. Oh, he's just

punching this bird dinosaur. He wasn't stabbing.

You said stabbing. I was looking like that. He's

not stabbing anything. What'd you got? The size

in his right hand. It looks like he's going to

stab the bird's wing or whatever. I don't know.

So we start off with Raph and Leo arguing, as

per usual. Raph, don't try to fight them. Just

run. And Leo gets hurt and what the heck is going

on and we have So we are in prehistoric turtle

a source if you want to go by the video game

people And it is the Krang All right, I should

say the utroms I'm so used to animated series

occurring from the 2012 animated series Which

actually, as of this recording, just had its

Season 3 premiere episode this past weekend.

So, the Utroms are riding the Dinosaurs, or the

Triceratons, maybe? Nope, those are Hadrosaurs.

They're decked out in armor and helmets, kind

of like that old 80s toy line, where the Dino

- the Dino Riders, yeah. The Dino Riders, yeah.

That's right. They just have missile pods and

things on the side of the canopy, too. So they're

running through... capturing all these dinosaurs,

presumably to do experiments, and one of the

utroms captures Raph and this other little thing,

and start to take him away while the other turtles

manage to escape, only to fall into the hands

of a... the hands? The tiny hands of a giant

T -Rex. Which I am glad to say, anatomically

speaking, they've given this dinosaur... this

presumably a T -Rex feathers, which is great

to see that kind of working its way into pop

culture, that yes, this thing's had feathers.

We know this now. It reminds me of a buddy of

mine, his podcast, the Untitled Mike and Laura

Project, Mike Laidman and Laura Thomas. Mike

is of the opinion of no, T -Rex's never had feathers.

So yeah, so we get the t -rex and I and just

I I just love Mikey It's like it's okay guys.

I got this he throws something at it and then

Next thing you know they're being chased um and

the utroms Are talking to one another saying

I didn't realize there was intelligent life and

blah blah blah and all this and all that Um,

there's really nothing to these Zootroms right

now. Um, they're just kind of there and neither

one of, I mean, they're, they're, they're, I

mean, it's like put, you know, indiscriminate

soldier here, you know, put first soldier here

that you want to get killed. You know, it's like

send out the pawns. Um, so the turtles hide in

the cave and I, again, Love Mikey. It's okay

guys. I've got this and Leo and Don no What do

you think of Ross's art style for this so far?

I think you and I are both not giant fans of

Ross Campbell, but there's It's it's changed

in this standalone series that doesn't exactly

have to fit with anything else and with with

Bill Crabtree's colors, I think Ross Campbell

and Bill Crabtree get together. They work together

really well. I think I like Crabtree coloring

Campbell more than Rhonda Pattinson that it really

lends itself to the art and Not having to tie

into such a serious tone. This is a lighter hearted

episode the the characters have gone more cartoony

and given The the activity of the kid of the

four turtles and Mikey here throw in things.

Don't worry guys. I got this I hear the voices

from the animated series in this where I don't

hear that the current animated series where I

don't hear that in the other issues and You really

can almost kind of see it and I don't know if

that's intentional or if it's accidental or it's

just Ross Campbell's art but While I'm not the

biggest Ross Campbell fan. This is what I enjoy.

I like to see his Single story let him do what

he does really awesome go wild with those my

little pony legs do it because the colors look

great Yeah, like I want to see this animated.

I want to see this Hand animated 2d stuff. I

think it'd be brilliant. That'd be awesome. Yeah,

so Renette shows up and It looks like she's cursing

at them It looks like that but Cause at one point

in this, she says, I said blah blah blah, oh

no, this stupid garble garble is garble garble

again. It looks like she's, it really looks like

she's cursing. But she is holding the scepter

that we all know from the Turtles 3 film. And

she's gotta go get it repaired again. My guess

is that it's its translation function It's is

on the fritz and that's probably why she's not

the whole thing is probably on the fritz Which

is why she's not bringing them home right now

Well, right and plus we have three other Three

other dimensions to go through so after that

happens we we go to the the utram base or raf

is being held prisoner And that's interesting.

What's interesting? The whole Utrom base thing

and the two Utroms just... Just their discussion

is like, hmm... They say, the translation module

that creature is trying to speak. What? You know.

No, you must be mistaken. See for yourself. In

a few more hours we should have it language analyzed

and we will be able to communicate with it. We

may have been wrong about their intelligence

level after all. It's just hilarious. We then

go outside of the base to where Leo, Donnie,

and Mikey are. They're making ninja eyes at the

base. I love it. And Mikey says, we'll have to

fly in. Turtles can't fly, Mikey. You say that

now, just give me a couple of hours to learn.

We go back inside the cage and Raph is cutting

off one of his leg or knee bandages and he says

to this little creature that's in there with

him, you have any brothers or sisters? Pepper

on oh you name the name that thing already name

the thing pepper on it. That's right Family can

be pretty okay. I need to get out of here get

back to my family and make sure they're alright

But I'm gonna need your help, and I just I hear

this coming out and Sean Astin's voice And I

know he's like treating this thing like he treated

slash which is kind of it well It was spike when

it was a little turtle yeah, and giving him a

little grave hit bandana is adorable but it's

so fun and i'll excuse it in this because it's

not where i like my serious turtles it's uh so

i'm okay saying it's adorable i mean it's a it's

a time travel displacement story i mean it's

like you already said with the art it's supposed

to be fun this isn't they have no idea where

they're where they are what they're doing and

the fact that they're now running into utroms

in prehistoric times that's you know it's a whole

other thing um but uh uh and then uh you know

mikey comes in and woohoo turtles can fly eat

rocks utrons done done done huh smash take cover

oh god this is so these creatures that they're

drawing in here are just out of this world They

just really, really are. Raph's like, hey, Donnie,

you can free me too, you know, if you want. You

ready, Pepperoni? Let's kick some ootrum. I need

to put this on Facebook. This is amazing. You

know, we always complain about Ross and his art

style and stuff, but right here, this is amazing.

Yeah, I looked at that and kind of paged by it,

but yeah, that's a dirty drawing. That's like,

he's got those beautiful hatching marks everywhere

that just make it look textured. It's so, just

so awesome. Very graphical. Less cartoonish,

more graphics. Or graphical. That is the right

word. I use the right word. I'm a podcaster.

I need to use the right words. There are no such

thing as wrong words in podcasting so So we get

to We get to kind of almost the end here where

they're tying up the utroms. This scene where

Don is tying up the utroms, it reminds me of

the scene from Turtles 2. It's like, get out

of here, kid! Go! We'll take care of these guys!

Kino comes back and they're all kind of tied

up and one's hanging from the ceiling, twirling

around like a bit. That's what this reminds me

of. And we run into the transport team, which

is not a good thing for the turtles at all. No,

they learned very quickly as they destroyed this

base camp that the Utrums who were there were

just scientists, but now they must not have reported

it in and the armed ones have come to say, hey,

what's up? And they pop out of this portal and

it's fire on the native animals immediately.

and the the panel right below that right before

we get to the battle we see the five turtles

we see the four turtles in pepperoni i remember

when i first read this first issue i screen kept

this and put this on facebook because That image

is just so cool. You've got Leo with his toothy

grin, Mikey like, hmm, what's going on here?

Don and then Raph is just like, let's kick shell

and Pepperoni is the same way as Raph almost.

Pepperoni looks concerned to me. Yes, so awesome.

So they're basically running from these guys

and the the utram says let us free you know nothing

about this planet you arrogant fools And they

don't because as the turtles they're leading

them somewhere They get to this open field and

then scatter as the giant feathered t -rex comes

to say And that didn't catch the bottom panel

there They're firing on the the thing and it's

doing nothing at all of this to this t -rex It

one of the who Trump's bends over picks up one

of the fruit says it's okay guys. I've got this

So we get to Mikey and the rest of turtles in

a cave or some sort of cavernous expanse here.

And, you know, he's talking about his flying

lessons, and Leo took out your U -tron single

-handedly, wham, bam, boom, and Raph sat in his

cage. I'm laughing harder at this issue the second

time through than it did through the first. I

know. I know. It's just... And Raph, after Mikey

says some more stuff, Raph says, looks at Pepperoni

and says, okay, maybe family isn't always so

great. So just when we're about to have a happy

ending, the four turtles disappear. Bloop! In

that blue transporting light, and Pepperoni is

left to eat the fake pizza that Michelangelo

made out of leaves and twigs. That is so awesome.

Everywhere they go, it's pizza. It doesn't matter

what it is. So the turtles disappear and we go

back to the utrams. Intelligent warrior illusions

on the godforsaken planet? I know, I wouldn't

have thought it possible. Imagine if we could

harness that power. We need to track them down.

And conscript them into our army. And then we

see the first triceraton, or what is going to

be the first triceraton. That's interesting.

Genetic modification, man. Yup. And then we get

the cover for the next issue, and then on...

This might be in yours as well. We get... Color

concepts. Color concepts for pepperoni and some

of the... the other animals, which is really,

really cool. I do get those. I'm happy to see

them. Absolutely. What did you think of this

first issue overall? If you'd have asked me 45

minutes ago, I'd have said that the game is way

better than the comic, and it has nothing to

do... I mean, they're not really actually related

outside of the name that's become kind of a thing

that rolls along with the turtles, but... As

a stand -alone issue, I think it's pretty fun.

And I don't know, part of me wants to ask, was

it worth 32 pages, 22 pages, to say the Utrams

got the Triceratons from Earth's past? You know,

I mean, did you really? I suppose, you know,

it's a fun reason to give us turtles and time,

but I still want there to be a little more substance

to it than that. I mean, it's one of the side

issues that's ignorable. I don't know. I think,

you know, when we talked about it the last issue,

once the turtles have gotten rid of the technodrome

threat, once the turtles have gotten rid of the

shredder threat, you know, as temporarily as

those things might go away, I think it needs

to turn more sci -fi. I think I would have been

more satisfied with, like, a 12 -issue mini -arc

of Turtles in Time. Not mini -arc, but a 12 -issue

arc of Turtles in Time. Let it go that more sci

-fi direction. Because now that they've done

this, they can't do that later. No, I know. But

I'm pretty happy with it. Like I said, I view

these four issues like levels of the game because

they kind of mimic that a little bit. They don't

focus too much on it, which is fine. But I really

viewed this as what would happen if there was

a story told in prehistoric Turtlesaurus. I really

dug the first issue. I was so worried about continuity.

I wasn't bugging Bobby, but I was like, so wait,

do I need to wait for the annual? And he's like,

no, just read it. You'll be fine. Because everybody

says that, and we've even said it, there is a

specific story order that you should really read

this overall IDW main turtle series in. And it

wasn't it was very important with some of those

one shots because otherwise, you know, Leonardo

is Fine and then in the next issue all of a sudden

he's in their arms passed out unconscious That's

kind of important. But this one right it just

didn't end up being that important Right, right

for issue number two We have the We have the

cover here the main cover is That is Leo at the

front left, right? Yep, Katana. Leo, Mikey, and

basically of all four. And they're all on horseback.

And what I love about this series to this point

with the covers is on the main covers how they

did the old timey Turtles in Time. Like at the

top the top the very top banner absolutely loved

that I thought that was great So we get to the

story so far The turtles have become unstuck

in time after just barely surviving a stint in

prehistoric times the girls are blinked away

in a different Epoch time -traveling friend Renette

seems to be involved in some way, but her sole

appearance was unintelligible some Help, she

is. And this one is written by Eric Burnham.

The artist is Charles Paul Wilson III. Colorist

is Jerry Moeller. Maybe it was just Comixology's

fault for not having them listed properly on

the website. We open this one with... We go to

Japan, millions of years later. Going to Japan

from prehistoric times... I don't know where

this... I can't think of... This isn't the pirate

level, because that's issue three. Well, they

didn't go to Japan in the Turtles in Time. I

know, but I'm trying to think if they went to

some other... I don't know, whatever. I think

the closest in time would have been the pirate

level. Mm -hmm, yeah, which we get next issue

and the third issue So we get and this is completely

different art I mean you look at the you know

this first page and you look at the turtles and

They look like they're melting a little bit.

They look like they're 45 years old They look

like they've aged tremendously And this is kind

of my problem with changing artists. Like, we've

said before, and you've said this, where on the

book it changes per arc, but having multiple

artists on one storyline like this, and it all

being different, that's really where I have to

draw the line in the sand and say, oh, no, this

is not, at least from Ross Campbell to this,

it's very jarring. A very jarring change. I guess

you also have to think, I don't know how quickly

you read these issue to issue, but there's 30

days between me and Ross Campbell. And by the

time I get this issue, Ross Campbell's in a bag

and board in a box. And so this one pops out.

And I guess in its defense, this is kind of replacing

the one shots. And the one shots were literally

one shots. And I think it's only a matter of

branding that they call it the turtles in time

arc. But all of these stories are very separate.

Like, if we were, if it, from the last issue

to this issue, they were still in prehistoric

times, but the art changed, that's where I'd

have my problem and where I'd draw my line. But

since this is a different time, a different setting,

a different writer, and it doesn't have, you

could skip that first issue and not read it and

still understand what's going on in this book.

That's what I'm I guess I'm okay with the changing

art. This is not my favorite art, but it's it's

uh, it gets the job done Yeah So they're in Japan

In what I assume is Hamato Yoshi time At least

from these first couple of pages Renette shows

back up um and again it looks like she's cursing

at them been garble garble but still don't know

not done with the garble garble i still love

that that's amazing oh garble garble you for

garble garble um you're welcome uh it's just

so funny And Mikey even says wow, that was so

not I Will say that with with Eric Burnham here

and writing this Because this is the issue where

yep, they do meet up with with Yoshi and they

do meet up with their mother This is interesting.

I like what I wanted to see. This is the whole

reason I tuned into this Yeah, because this is

some awesome stuff absolutely love it Mikey oh

You gotta love Mikey so we get to a couple pages

probably from the beginning here We get to this

scene where this this guy is being attacked Well,

it's a motto Yoshi Hamato Yoshi is being attacked

and is being bullied and you know basically well

ambushed by ninjas yeah well doing a decent job

of dispatching them but Mikey doing the right

thing not knowing it's Hamato Yoshi yet decides

that all bullies suck and he jumps down there

And Leo's like, we can't interfere with the time.

Oh, well, nerds, I'm jumping down there. Yep.

And it's now I think my initial reaction to the

art change with the turtle designs was it was

the up close image from earlier with them in

basically full frame. Oh, they do look really

terrible like that. Yeah. When they're like this

in action poses and they're in the samurai armor,

it's fine. And you get to a panel where you get

Leo and, I keep wanting to call him Splinter,

but Hamato Yoshi say, KAAA at the same time.

Which is really... It's neat because their pose

is the same. They both, I betcha, you know, in...

fake world. They both realize or recognize each

other's fighting style and know that it's the

same. Mm -hmm. Um, so we have him thanking them

and everybody except, well, okay, Donnie and

Raph have stranger masks than Leo and Mikey.

Donnie and Raph just have, like, what look like

our... You know, those old belly dancer things

on their mouth. I wish they all had the masks

that Mikey and Leo have. Or the half masks that

Leo's wearing. Like they did in the third movie.

Yep. And that's really where I see the homage

here is to the third movie with these masks.

And of course, you know... Yoshi thinks they're

demons so we get that homage to the third movie

and and then he says Uh, why do you think we're

demons? Because your comrades speak in an unfamiliar

tongue. Michelangelo, who speaks Japanese, is

talking to him. And because men usually have

more fingers. And then he goes on to say, but

I have been impolite to you. You came to my aid

and at least I can offer in thanks is a meal.

Let it never be said that Hamato Yoshi is an

- ingrate and they're all like did he just say

hamato yoshi and they're um it's this is so weird

this is i love the art here but it's really talk

about playing up the reincarnated angle honestly

like seriously yoshi shen and the four brothers

This is strange. Probably more so for them. Yeah,

and it's not even... I assume it's Leo that's

doing that to Mikey, but the kid Mikey. Leo's

closer to the camera. What color is that? That

looks like Mikey's color. Mikey's doing Mikey.

No, no, no Mikey's on the edge cuz that's that's

that's raff That's raff. Yeah, what it looks

orange. He says what the part about Mikey playing

airplane with a baby human version of himself.

Oh, okay. Yeah Yeah, that's okay But it's it's

so funny it's so awesome Absolutely love this

I think this is a great This is one of the greatest

things for them to do, Turtles in Time, to have

this kind of story. Because they can, with the

way they've built the universe. Yep. And it's,

like, every single panel in this issue is amazing.

The two of my favorites are the look where human

Leonardo is eyeballing real Leonardo. Leo's saying

a turtle Leo's saying you mean cuz the human

you is giving us the hairy eyeball nice to know

some things will never change Yeah, and he's

but Leo's the then two panels later that look

of Sorrow on Leonardo's face because you know

what's going to happen to them We all know what's

gonna happen to them and like oh man cuz they

can't they are I mean Not I don't even think

they'd want to change what happened, but of course

they would at the same time Well, they know there's

too much to lose. Yeah, that's the point of this

issue though They they were going to try and

then you know as we see later They were going

to try, but then they figured well if we do that

then we as turtles won't exist anymore You know

time travel has so many damn issues with it really

does and we get we get Mikey talking to Tang

Shen and this is this is why I really I have

to read these two panels here Tang Shen says

I don't know why but there is something in me

that says I should trust you how can I help We

need to know where to find the foot clan and

can we maybe borrow the horses you guys have

up back? Well, very well, yes. Thanks, mom. Mikey

says in English. Yeah. Yeah. She's like, what?

You know, it's one of those things where it's

so fun to watch this kind of stuff. It really,

really is. Because she doesn't know I don't think

these people speak English no, no, you know,

so I Mean I guess just from him giving her a

giant hug She might have understood something

because you know a mother never doesn't know

her children So we get to We get to the The Foot

Clan compound and Saki is there with... Who's

he there with? Kimura, somebody I don't remember

what we call. Saki says, you are here because

you have failed the Foot Clan repeatedly. I have

sent to Matayoshi to correct your most recent

mistake. Kimura is the name, saying that he's

an embarrassment and he basically... attacks

him but hey these these giant Kappa come in and

and and attack Saki go demon and this is most

definitely Leo yep I believe right yeah this

is How does he I mean, I know it's an art thing

and they have to stay in the in the in the uniforms

But how does he not resist just ripping the the

entire uniform off and attacking him as a turtle?

This fight scene is so good. I only wish it were

longer. Yeah, it's It's about between the time

when he attacks and saves the other guy They

do the stare down and then one two three Like

three panels of fight. I turn the page and there's

a couple more. Yeah. Yeah And you know the demons

are coming the demons are coming Yeah, Leo's

trying to fight him Yeah, and I I think I don't

know that staredown tells me stuff that I almost

think you know Leo really wants to win this fight,

but I don't think At his at this age where at

the point where Leonardo is in the book that

he has any hope of winning against the shredder

single -handedly zero Yeah, and I think he knows

that but I don't think he'd still try he's he's

too much in a blind rage here Where he says do

you even know what you've done? How many lives

you've? Ruined you killed my whole family. You

killed me Yeah, and he says and then you followed

us into the future and tried to do it again Stop

babbling in your demon tongue and fight Which

I'm I'm really happy that the Leo lines are in

English so we can understand them a Leo can't

speak Japanese so we're I Don't know maybe all

that time under kitsune spell he learned it I

Who the hell knows how Mikey can speak Japanese?

I mean, it's Mikey for crap sake. That's the

it's the magic of reincarnation Yeah, apparently,

but I guess it's Lee I don't think the fact that

sake's lines are in English I don't think Leo

understands what he's saying at all either maybe

a word or two, but I don't think he Knows Japanese

like Mikey does Yeah And then is it Raph? No,

it's Mikey Think about what you're doing. No,

that's Raph. He's got a sign. What is right?

It's Dammit, who's the colorist on this thing?

It's that sepia tone. They need to distinguish

that, but yeah, it is Raph, you're right. Now

see, that's so weird. In the panel where he comes

in and says, think about what you're doing, and

you can barely see his mask. It looks orange

to me on here. And then two panels later when

it's close up and he says, I'm not going to fight

you over this, Leo. It's blood on red. How can

you? How can the colorist go from... I would

attribute that to lighting. Or to coloring one

of those panels on a Thursday night and then

coming back and doing the other one Friday afternoon.

And we get Raph's monologue here where he says

you're training our lives and more than that

as well. And, you know, Raph finally... You know

says You know Shredder attacks him some more

or Saki I should say he says die watch you're

not a man Guess the guy you usually stab in the

back don't have shells, huh? And he just like

high kicks him and knocks him out And here we

go with the time traveling again And what's interesting

here is we get an epilogue. And we see Shredder

and Kitsune talking about the demon attack, which

is very interesting. I thought that was kind

of awesome. Overall, issue number two was damn

good. I think it was an issue that we really

needed. Especially good. I was very happy to

have them go to Japan and get to see their mom

and get to see Hamato Yoshi. I think that was

It's just special for him. It's it's Something

that they don't get to do in any other version

of the turtles world Nope Because usually once

Tang Shen is dead. She's dead don't really I

mean yeah, they've been doing the whole thing

with Leo now and in this series where he'll see

her and stuff like that, but I Mean usually in

every other incarnation once she's dead. She's

dead And I think the reason why he and splinter

also see her as we've come to this point is that

It all reflects around the reincarnation thing

Issue number three is the Yar pirate issue. This

is by far the strangest one. I've never been

a big fan of pirates, like to the point where

when Assassin's Creed went from Ezio to pirates

and Okay, I can deal with the Native American

stuff. That's amazing and fun. But the pirate

levels that everybody was like, Oh, this is amazing.

This is what and then they built the next game

around the pirate stuff. I was like, No, I don't

want to play. I don't like ninjas far superior

to pirates. And that's I think the only reason

they went pirates with this was so that they

could make ninjas versus pirate jokes. Um, yeah,

I mean, Well that and I mean again it mimics

the game because you have the in the game you

have the foot soldiers dressed up as pirates.

You have Bebop and Rocksteady kind of dressed

up as pirates. For Turtles in Time, issue number

three, the story so far, the turtles have become

unstuck in time after just barely surviving a

stint in prehistoric times and then meeting their

then human selves in feudal Japan. The turtles

are blinked away to a different epoch. Time traveling

friend Renette seems to be involved in some way,

but no one can understand what she's trying to

say. This one is again by Eric Burnham. The artist

in this one is Ben Bates in the letter of Sean

Lee. Obviously, editor is Bobby Kernau. I love

this one. I love Ben Bates. Like, this is a guy

we got to interview because, oh my god, he might

be my favorite out of all everybody. I know you

love Dan Duncan because he was one of the original

ones, but just... Ben Bates is amazing. What

else has he done? The runs. uh... old god you

would ask me that now yeah i i don't i don't

recall i don't remember now uh... let me see

here uh... c crap you would ask that i'm sorry

and dates been made sorry listeners it's all

joe's fault that it all while he didn't make

a man comic he's done my little pony stuff he's

done sonic stuff for turtles He was on the main

ongoing in several issues. He's done villain

stuff as well I would wager to say this is very

unique compared to the other Stuff he's been

on this does not look like anything I've seen

before this in fact the art in here has a I don't

know a 30 % anime bent Mm -hmm, which I kind

of lends itself to the pirate thing. I think

I mean Not because those two things are related,

but I think it magnifies the pirateness of this

issue. Mm -hmm. Yeah, I would have to... I'd

have to look Ben up on like Wiki or something

to find out what everything that he has done.

That's sad. wikipedia only lists an actor a golfer

and something else wow i'll have to find out

later but anyway um he's done some amazing amazing

stuff with turtles i do know that because i do

love his art style so we start um in the year

1726 the caribbean sea and it's pirates and a

rogue ship is preparing to attack the good pirates?

I don't even know if there are good pirates but

this basically is pirate versus pirate even though

these other pirates that are saying for the kraken

which I assume is crying they're dressed kind

of like ninjas or at least they have you know

bandanas around their eyes so that's that's interesting

Then the turtles appear wait Wait, that is not

an angry mob of ninjas And then hey we're on

a boat which I think anytime anybody says that

now you can't say it without referring to the

Saturday night lives that was a Saturday night

live music video, wasn't it? Yeah, I think so

So the turtles are still in there feudal Japan

gear and Again, I love the white Backgrounds

for this. Yeah, everything is very lightly colored

it ever the the the highlights go to white very

quickly and you really only get color in the

medium to dark shadows, so there's a lot of paper

shining through I guess you would say and but

it It helps it does amazing things for this Yeah,

we get to Trying to see which which page it is

here we get to page 7 of this book and it this

is where I love Ben's art because in the guided

view on Comixology we get to the page where it's

like you'll be forgiving us if we don't just

take your word about that you know we get to

that and it pulls me it pulls me from the guy

saying that to the turtles upper right hand corner

of page seven and it's all four of them basically

black silhouettes with their bandanas it looks

so amazing trying to find that page it's page

seven my pages aren't numbered and there's actually

one number here but seven doesn't look like that

uh it's um right after it is the page after leo

takes his helmet off ah cool there it is well

that is nice This is why I love Ben's art so

much, is because of this shadowing here. I wish

I had a whole issue of them drawn in shadow like

this. It's called Leonardo Blindsight. There's

a Tales of the Turtles issue. I think it's available

in trade. There's five issues in the story arc,

and it's brilliant. One of my favorite turtle

stories ever. Actually, I commissioned Jim Lawson,

who drew it. to replicate one of the pages, and

I'm very happy with that beautiful piece of art.

But it exists. So we get the turtles, and we

get, after the page that we're just on here,

we get all this exposition and back and forth

between them and the pirates. And Mikey's like

dudes don't think of it like that Mikey what?

If you guys go running now, you'll always be

running and he has this whole long speech and

I love the bottom panel where Raph's like the

heck was that? I've been watching Inspirational

speeches online. Oh, we are so doomed and all

the parrots like yeah, maybe we can do this.

Let's do it guys. Yeah So they basically make

Mike, the captain, since he's inspired them and

the captain was shamed in battle a few moments

ago by the Turtles. And then the parrot. The

parrot reminds me of the parrot from an old Looney

Tunes cartoon, where it's Daffy's stole away

on a ship and the parrot's always trying to bust

him to get him to be kicked off the ship. I'd

like to see that. I'll have to see if I can find

it. So, Mikey is captain of the ship. We then

go to something that looks like the Krang logo.

Because that ain't a foot logo. Krang has a logo?

It's after they make Mikey captain. So there's

a... It's a red background. Oh yeah. Well, the

Kraken is a sea monster. Thing and I think this

is both looking kind of like a tentacled sea

monster, but also vaguely crying like Well because

the Kraken is essentially crying right and this

in this it is but we don't yeah up until I mean

I don't even think we could Safely guess at that

point not until we get to a place called burnout

island Do we really you know put two and two

together that how wait a minute? No, I don't

know I kind of like as soon as that guy said

For the Kraken, like as soon as he said that

when they were attacking the ship earlier, I

kind of got it. Because I mean, it starts with

a K, and there's no foots around, so... Well,

but a Kraken is something that pirates would

have actually been afraid of, a sea monster that

eats their ship. So it's, I mean, that's a real

word, it's not like... No, I know, yeah. Yeah,

I didn't make that leap. And not even after seeing

that banner there, it wasn't... It wasn't until

they dropped Burnout Island's name that I said,

wait a minute! Which, this whole thing where

the Utroms keep showing up, I mean, Utroms were

in 16th century Japan, which we found out was

Krang. Utroms were in, you know, 65 million years

BC harvesting Triceratons. I have this feeling

that time passes differently in Dimension X,

in Krang's world, and I'll be asking... Tom waltz

if if that is the case when I when I meet him

or maybe I should just save it for an interview

question So we get this after the page with the

Kraken logo crank logo we get this giant splash

page of a training montage, yeah full -on training

montage and Raph at the bottom of it is fishing

Sorry guys, I need to relax I'm gonna go fishing

I Like the the center panel with Donatello swabbing

the deck like it's a bowstaff that's an actual

position with a bowstaff it that we we did that

in Aikido and I think that's I love seeing that

stuff where you know somebody did the research

to find out where the hands go, what the spacing

is, how far apart the feet should be. And when

they get it right, it just tickles me pink. Absolutely.

I mean, honestly, can we say that there has been

anything that they've gotten really wrong with

the overall story of this entire series? Turtles

in Time specifically, but overall, the entire

series, I don't think we've ever really questioned...

I mean, we've questioned several things of how

they would work, but as far as, like, different

things that they've put in the Turtles series,

I don't think we've really ever questioned anything,

because they've done it so well. Yeah, and anything

that has... that there has been a problem with,

I've probably forgotten it, because everything

else glows so brightly. I know, right? I mean...

So... So here So we get the like I said, we get

the giant splash page and the coolest thing about

the splash page on on Comixology is how they

focus it in the guided view because they have

a focus on You know, they have a focus on on

Donnie with the cannon and then they have a focus

on him with you know swapping the deck like you

said And then they have a focus on just the bottom

panel of raft fishing. It's like, seriously?

So we get to the next page, and we talk to one

of the other pirates, and he says, I won't deny

that I'm against these orders, sir, but I'm following

them all the same. You know, you're right. You're

not slowing us down or on purpose. You're not

right. So it's basically Mikey and the old captain

kind of arguing back and forth and I wish more

was happening as we were going along here. Like

right now we're just like after the giant splash

page, I wish somebody would have attacked by

now, you know, and cause it's just I don't know,

it just seems a little slow. And then we get

the bottom panel of the final page before we

get to the Brno Island revelation where Raph

is standing and he's got an eye patch. And we

get to Brno Island and we see that it's... That

it's crying and it's very obviously crying. Yeah

this this getting to this reveal. I recognize

the artwork I Remember that crying. That's an

interesting panel, too. It's got there's lots

of I Mean, it looks like black marker usually

when you are doing the comic art you do your

line art with black But when you scan it into

the computer you do this thing with the levels

and all of the blacks turn 100 % black, but they

seem to have left it in this. That kind of leads

me to believe that it might have been hand -colored,

in which case you wouldn't have wanted to key

that out. I appreciate seeing real art, not the

digital stuff. Yeah, absolutely. I can't tell

if that was hand -colored. The splash panel with

Donnie is obviously watercolor. Yeah, maybe gouache,

but everything else looks digital again. Yeah,

that's a trick. That's beautiful though. I love

this stuff Yeah, it's absolutely gorgeous, and

then we get to the close -up on it And he's like,

but if I return and find you failed me again,

mr. Rhodes, I promise you will regret it And

then the pirates call it mr. Nardo Mr. Nardo

Why it's don't call me that sorry sir, but I

was told to tell you that wait. Do you hear that

sound and? we have an attack and We have this

really really awesome battle scene And all of

the turtles look amazing even Raph with his eye

patch which I didn't think would work But it

really does work And guess who shows back up?

Her and her damn time travel. Oh my god. And

then Mikey, run it! Talk about killer timing.

I love how different this issue is with the art

than any of the previous ones. The blacks, the

whites, the backgrounds, all of it looks so good.

Don't know if I could read a comic done like

this all the time But this was a really really

refreshing issue. Mm -hmm But here's a I'm I

think I'm the panel the page you're on rather

Where the old captain cuts the the end off the

weird alien blaster that these? Yeah, it's have

been given that that motion blur there It's a

very anime thing to do or manga thing to do I

guess it's not animations And so that's this

is interesting. You can see where this guy's

pedigree kind of came from Well, absolutely he

cuts I can't believe he cut that blaster off.

It's so awesome And then we get between the pirate

and the red -faced dude I don't need the Kraken's

pistol to deal with you gutless dogs You're barely

even real pirates. You say that about us, but

without surprise and fear on your side, what

are you? I'm the man who will feed your carcass

to a nest of blighted giraffes while your heart's

still beating, that's who I am. It's just pirate

talk. That's so weird. This makes me want to

go draw some pictures with motion blur. It really

does. And we get to, I'll be damned if I'm going

to be caged by the likes of you by the captain

that was working with the turtles. I really wish

that there was an actual panel of showing them

popping up out of the water. I really like...

man I love being a turtle I really wish that

was here and you know Mikey's like okay you guys

we've got you outnumbered you know who wants

to join us and all of the Kraken army joins them

basically and kicks the other guy out And the

turtles disappear yet again And we end with the

pirates thing and and The pirates end up with

some mutagen which cannot be good Huh, which

that oh they suppose of it. I I was scared for

a minute Yeah, he says grab some of this before

you set off the powder We can get a good a good

price in carcass. No, sir You're new to our code.

So let me make it simple. We weren't here to

raid and even if we were that goo reeks of the

devil I'll not willingly bring it elsewhere get

rid of it and Throw it into the river for all

I care and they throw it in and Guess who it

infects That would be an alligator. That'd be

Leatherhead. Which, this is confusing to me because

we're in 1700 and something something. Alligators

don't live that long, how are they going to get

him to present day? Well you gotta remember the

mutagen in the series has healing properties

and longevity properties. Look how long Shredder's

been alive. Yeah. So you got to remember about

that it says obviously to be continued I think

we are going to take a quick break Because I

want to put in some some some time -traveling

music So we'll be back after this It's Decian,

the superhero webcomic. Decian's got superhero

antics and sexy girls. Read it now at Decian

we are all remote controlled. are back and number

four the final issue of Turtles in Time we have

Shredder has taken over on the cover and the

turtles have no idea where they are but Shredder

has taken over I'll say this right now, kind

of before we get into this, Paul Allor basically

broke my heart in this episode, in this issue

I should say. The story so far, the turtles have

traveled from prehistoric times to feudal Japan

to the golden age of piracy. Sounds like a bad

Napster joke. Each stop has seen the turtles

face danger as well as unhelpful visits from

time traveling friend Renette. Now the turtles

have just been zapped to their final stop. Dun

dun dun. So they're at their final stop and this

is by far the best issue of the series. At least

for me it is. I'm partial to 16th century Japan.

Okay, but that's that's that's a bias. Yeah,

I'm not I'm not saying that one's bad. I'm saying

like That okay two and four are the best issues

out of this series Yes, because of how they are

written So we get the turtles showing up they

have these rabbit things around them and Leo's

like get ready or get ready stay ready we could

be attacked any second huh as everybody just

kind of walks away the fly creature and the the

bird creature they're obvious is that are they

obviously in Times Square at that point no not

obviously at that point no no that's not Times

Square no So we get to the next panel sushi pizza

Sounds so wrong. So I'm looking at these pictures

and the art and all this stuff and I'm going

Wait, this is Dan Duncan He's it's lit. It's

so different I I hardly recognize it about the

only thing that looks like Dan Duncan is that

their their plaster on the front shell Yeah,

I was kind of like Oh, I feel jipped. This isn't

Dan Duncan. It's not the Dan Duncan I love from

the first 12 issues, but you know, whatever.

They're okay. It's okay. It doesn't even look

like Rhonda Pattinson's colors. It's so saturated.

I don't think she's on... Oh, my issues. Oh,

yes, no, she is. She is. Yeah, she is. This looks

more like the coloring from the first issue,

from the... Yeah, Ross Campbell issue. Yep So

we get Leo talking about so instead they've got

hover cars and robot waiters and Mikey times

in pretty good pizza Yeah, but it's not just

the robots or the hover cars or even the pizza

i think i think maybe we want all our struggling

what if this is the result of world where we're

accepted where we can walk down the street and

no one blinks an eye where we can be you guys

are ninjas right while we don't even look like

ninjas so you know we get this girl who If she

was wearing yellow, I'd say she resembles April,

but she doesn't resemble April at all. And we

come to find out that there is a certain class

to this new society come to find out they didn't

win. Because Donnie says... what in a city full

of mutants you still have people telling you

what to what you can and can't do with your life

donnie we really don't understand the rules in

this if your master is telling you that you can't

be a ninja then you need to go find a new master

fight back and are you insane you can't talk

like that way not in public where do you guys

say you were from and then all hell breaks loose

The arts I These first few pages I'm fine with

the interiors of the diner and the close -ups

But the backgrounds once we get like outside

again and Mikey or somebody gets thrown through

the window It just looks too weird for me At

least in this this these battle scenes after

she says It's on the page where they get tossed

out. It's on that page. This place isn't Manhattan

if you're on Shredder Island Yeah, you're on

Shredder Island So these these panels here just

look kind of really weird to me until we get

to Guys, I think we might be a little outnumbered

here like until we get there It doesn't look

the colors and everything else just don't look

right to me But once we get there, I'm fine.

And of course, Renette's just walking around.

Let's see. They should be right around. Oh, bad

timing. She tricks the guy. Yep. Or good timing.

So they go back to the sewer layer. And it is

very, very empty. Oh, my gosh. There's metalheads

in the corner. Is he? Yep. Yes, he is. You're

right. Well, poor metalhead. Um, I know you don't

much care for him, but still poor metalhead.

Um, so all is I can think of is, uh, I had some

pizza down here a few days ago. Like penicillin

on your pizza? Oh, question. Yeah. Do you like

penicillin on your pizza? That's all I can think

of seeing this opening scene. And then we get

to the map. I noticed something on this map that

I did not notice the first time I looked at it.

The giant foot and the giant brain? Well, I noticed

those two, but I didn't notice the little fly

over Australia. Wait. What yeah, I think that's

Baxter's Island down there. I Don't even hold

on a second. Oh Snap I never noticed that because

The guided view doesn't pull to that it pulls

to the next page Wow So there's a big foot logo

painted over North and South America Craig must

have Asia and Africa Europe and Europe and then

Baxter has Australia You notice something else

about this this panel here where Donnie's got

his hand on the map well the four bandanas hanging

from uh -huh uh -huh So Raynett shows back up

again and And, you know, we get Donnie and I...

This is what... From this panel here where Donnie

is talking, where he says, you're assuming we

can, Leo, but you don't know that. We don't know

what caused this world. It might be something

we already did. Should we have killed Saki back

in feudal Japan? Should we have stopped him from

taking over the city, from using the mutagen?

What if we already made the mistake? What one

mistake... that one mistake led to all of this

and then out of the shadows it wasn't just one

mistake it was so many mistakes so so many old

man donnie my god old man donnie oh this is from

this point on to the end of the issue paul allor

broke my heart Just how awesome he is writing

this story, and this is what I mean about this

one being, at least for me personally, the best

one out of the four, because we've explored Donnie

a little bit throughout the main 37, 38 issues

of the series, and we kind of explored his tech

side and his one -shot, but we haven't really

explored his doubts, and that's what this issue

does. Yeah, you know... Frick beans, you know,

you just kinda changed my mind on this issue

a little bit. Donnie's always been the least

interesting turtle to me. Even as a kid, as much

as Michelangelo tends to drive me crazy now,

in this series, he's the one with the heart.

But Donnie's always been the generic smart one,

the brainiac, the guy who makes things that had

no... Human or well, no real person has any business

being able to make on their own, you know that

Donnie makes the turtle blimp How does he make

the turtle blimp you he's not he's not an aircraft

engineer. Anyway, um this is Man, I don't know

how many 35 36 37 issues in we're really getting

at Donnie's heart now and yeah, you're right

We get to see his doubts we get to see What he's

actually feeling as he's being a ninja turtle

Yep, and Renette says you guys should not be

meeting each other. You don't get a vote Renette

not after everything We've just been through

Yeah, and this is cool. Where are the rest of

us? I want to meet old man me. Oh Yeah about

that Mikey. Yeah I think we have to look for

a can of turtle soup, bud They don't actually

say that in the book. I didn't read that. You

had to go there. You know, an old man, Donnie,

says, I'm the only one left because I gave up.

Once the war started, we were facing such high

odds, impossible odds, continuing the fight,

it just made no sense. And our brothers, they

disagreed. everything out of old man Donnie's

mouth breaks my heart I mean I know this is an

alternate time and it hasn't happened and you

know but just seeing young Donnie go after this

old and we get to you know we get to Donnie asking

and you you're just going to let that happen

what happened to you You know we get there and

then like two panels to the right of that we

see Old man Donnie say we can't go back yet.

I don't know this is young Donnie. We can't go

back yet I don't know if we can stop this future

from happening, but I do know that I can stop

that execution and We get to that lower panel,

and it's the five of them we're net included

On the left and old man Donnie on the right and

it's just um, you know This is again awesome.

Awesome. Yeah, he's not so much old man Donnie

Isn't so much holding that staff as much as he's

leaning on it. Like he's carrying a burden Absolutely.

He's carrying a burden that you know He's carrying

a burden. Plus, I'm sure at this point he's using

it to keep himself up and he says, you know,

it's not my fight, it's not yours either, but

at least I can show you the way. And we get to

the execution. The turtles go ahead and break

it up. And poor old man Donnie, he gets whacked

in the back of the head pretty hard, and he starts

to fight back. And he says, well that felt all

right. and you just see the comedy coming out

of him. I mean, I know Donnie's not your favorite

character, but he's always been my favorite character.

It's not just because of the purple bandana,

that's part of it, but, you know. And we get

the two Donnies working together and that's just

amazing. So they free everybody. He says, let's

see, we get to old man Donnie saying stop, and

then someone comes in and says, stay where you

are. Shellhead, the boss will want to see you

alive, but dead mutants make much more docile

prisoners. You know who that guy reminds me of?

I'm trying to find that panel, but... It's right

after the explosion. It's It's the page after

It's the it's two pages after where Donnie old

man Donnie is says that field that felt good

pages after one Two I haven't seen an explosion

yet Okay anyway this guy here that comes in reminds

me of a goon from the old thundercats series

so we get to the point where the girl from earlier

comes in and she basically saves everybody by

killing this guy and they all escape we get back

to Old man and young Donnie. I'll get them out

of here, just cover us, give us some time to

escape, and then Renette can transport you home.

Really? That's not exactly in your best interest.

You want me to change my mind? No, but I don't

know. I don't see how I can leave this place

and just pretend nothing has changed. This is

the future, now we know. This is a future, not

the future. You can fix it, maybe. Maybe. Maybe

I'm wrong. But I do know one thing. We just beat

some pretty impossible odds. And young Donnie's

like, huh. I think a minor gripe that I have

with this is I think old man Donnie really turned

awfully quick from being cranky and defeated

and mournful to... roll resentful is he what's

the word where he regret he's full of regret

over yeah decisions that he's made and knowing

that he's also made the right decisions by getting

out of the fight and that wasn't anyway he makes

a turn too quick I mean just after one fight

and getting the old ninja muscles stretched but

you know hey they only had one issue to tell

the story yeah I mean they only had 27 pages

to tell the story so I think it works for for

what it is And we see we see the guy in the red

face Talking about turtles and we go we get back

to The Again this is exactly where this kind

of gets to get to the rebel in an old man Donnie's

the rebel says my people are all settled in so

are those mutants so are those mutants um good

why didn't you tell Donatello or the other uh

why didn't you tell Donatello the other Donatello

who you are does it matter i'm not the woody

they used to know that made me cry when i read

it because it's like holy crap You know, and

Donnie's like, you know, Woody says to Donnie,

you know, we need, you know, we need fighters,

we need leaders, just think about it. And Donnie

picks up his bandana. And we go back to our time.

And this is one of the times I'll forgive in

our time, a turtle not having his, okay. Raph

in the in the pirate issue he had a eyepatch

on but he still had his bandanas around his neck,

but this is the one time this panel where Where

Mikey says? Maybe that's what he said. Maybe

we can change the future Okay, but what does

that guy know right who says he's some kind of

super genius Like he's like, oh right That the

panel where he says, oh right and Donnie just

kind of glare. That's the only time I will forgive

them having the bandanas off Because it just

made it look so much more emotional And You know

and you know Raph says something about you know

You know that Donnie would never give up on this

fight and he says that he's thought about it

and they're all like what? I've thought about

quitting I'm not saying I'm quitting now, not

even soon, but I've worked the problem, I've

considered the odds. And in our darkest moments,

I've wondered if there might be a day when it

comes and it just doesn't make sense to keep

on fighting. And that is really heart -wrenching.

Yeah, this does give an angle for Donatello to

play. Absolutely. I'm changing my mind on this

issue. like this series continues to do, it gives

body and substance to all these characters that

used to be, you know, cowabunga dude, I'm throwing

a garbage can lid at the funny mutant Rhino,

you know, I mean, there was nothing to it back

then. But I think this gives a reason for everything

being the way it is, so. Oh, absolutely. Yeah,

way to go IDW. You got me again. I love you guys.

And you know, I read this stuff and it really

is one of my favorite comics to read. Favorite

series, best series. And yeah, a lot of it is

because I relate to the subject matter, being

a fan as a kid. But... The artful weaving, the

giving true substance to all of the characters

is really skillful. And I wish that more people

would read it. That, you know, why isn't this

a top 10 book of all comics? And, you know, it's

because it's a weird publisher. It's not Marvel.

It's not DC. And, you know, the Ninja Turtles

are always big, but they've never been big. The

comics it's always been the other media that

they get licensed to but this is really I Mean

if you're only gonna ever experience Ninja Turtles

one way it needs to be this comic book. Oh Absolutely,

and then everything else that you watch will

be like an homage to the comic book You know

you go back and you watch the the old animated

series. Hey, it's Rex Denny and bebop from the

you know, just Absolutely and it's such a good

It's so so wonderfully done it really really

is He has going back to Ben Bates he has had

Four or he has had several different appearances

in the IDW verse Oh God, he's had a lot of stuff

He's worked on pretty much All of the turtles

stuff at one point or another most recently he

did issues According to Comic Vine he did issues

35 36 37 and 38 So it's recent for him So 35

his name's not on the cover, huh? Maybe huh?

Oh, I see what it did. It's just see oh, it's

just listing all the ninja. It's just listing

the nest I see I click I searched for him on

comic vine and I've got his profile up here and

it says he's got four appearances in turtles,

so I should have clicked on those issues 17 18

19 20 and 23 so but yeah turtles in time overall

uh amazing amazing stories i thought it was very

well done um you know it's kind of what i expected

as far as them kind of staying true to the game

as far as like how the time travel and like where

they go obviously feudal japan is kind of that

one level where it's out of the game but the

other three were spot on because technically

issue four could be um the Crang level, the future

level in the game. I think it's a reach to say

it had anything to do with the game outside of

the title. Yeah. I mean, what's the... Oh, shoot,

the dinosaur level. Prehistoric Turtlesaurus.

Yeah, there weren't foot soldiers riding dinosaurs,

gallimimuses in the book. It wasn't... I think

they the IDW people had a story to tell in dinosaur

times They had a story they needed to tell in

pirate times and pirates are hot right now So

I think I don't think they used the game as a

guide for where they were going outside of just

stealing Turtles in time and then paying that

homage with the scepter to the third movie Yeah,

I still dig it though Indie I I mean, you know,

we're all gonna draw allusions to different things

about stuff and like I said outside of the feudal

Japan issue Even though that issue was awesome.

I still see the other three as Somewhat, you

know could be compared to levels of the game

at least in certain aspects So overall zero to

five stars, what would you rate the series? Oh,

man It's it's not quite five stars Four and a

half four and three quarters, but I don't think

we need three quarter points No, I'll take my

four and a half. I'll round down bless your heart

IDW Yes, I'm gonna give it a straight four out

of five stars There it's still that that second

issue that up close shot I'm gonna take a full

star mark off of that because the art for me,

between the first issue and the second issue,

the art for me was so jarring at first. I mean,

I got used to it, but overall, the stories were

wonderful. You know, I'm so psyched to see what

they do next for a miniseries Like I honestly

don't know what they'll do next for a miniseries

if they do another one They have some new characters

who could get some one -shots. I still and I

If it hasn't come out while we've been recording

there's a comic shot a comic convention near

me in two weeks from the record date where Tom

Waltz the the main writer is Is gonna be at and

I'm very excited to meet him and I'm gonna try

to get us an interview on air with him. I think

that would be Fun, but I will go to him when

I say when I totally nerd out in front of him

to say I think what the IDW series needs now

is Tales of the TMNT the sub line of the Mirage

books where it's not it. They're not in continuity

stories Sometimes they are usually they they

tend to be You know at least they get the thumbs

up from Peter Laird when they did them but different

artists taking the turtles in different directions

and and So, you know, it's not something that's

ever meant to be read Concurrently with the series

doesn't relate story -wise necessarily, but I

think that's where it needs to go and we'll get

all these one shots We'll get all these New characters

in there. I want to see more from nobody because

I'm a big fan but That's that's my opinion as

to what they need to do with the next mini series

Yeah, I think angel as nobody will get more play

as the story goes. I think so she's She's gonna

play into you know the mutant war and all that

stuff. So Alright, that's gonna do it for this
