About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Joe Reed dig into the opening two issues of the Attack on Technodrome arc. Donatello strikes a dangerous deal with Shredder to infiltrate Krang's forces, leading to an elaborate multi-team assault on Burnout Island. The hosts discuss the intricate plotting, character dynamics, and stellar artwork as the Turtles orchestrate a plan that requires splitting their forces and keeping crucial secrets from allies.

Hey guys, Raphael here of the Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles. Did you say podcast? Dudes! Dudes!

You're listening to a podcast on the Gatecast

Radio Network. Welcome to The Polebags Back Issue

Classics. Join us as we talk about comics from

yesteryear. From DC, Marvel, and more. So open

your ears to hear our discussion. The older continuity

as the back issue classics are also what's in

the pool bag Alright folks, this is the final

back issue classics for January and I am of course

TFJ on Mike and this time we are Kicking some

shell with Joe Reed. Hello, sir. Hello How are

you? I am. Well, I'm glad to be here. I I look

forward to Getting to talk about these books

because they're still one of my favorite things

to come off the shelves. Oh Absolutely, they're

just so damn good between this daredevil and

moon night the sleeper hit that I think everybody

should be reading It's it's what I have to read

while I'm sitting in the driveway of the of the

the comic store while the car is running And

read them there absolutely and we kick off the

TMNT coverage for 2015 with the next big arc

that is currently happening in IDW's TMNT series

attack on technodrome we start with issue 41

are you asking the question that I'm asking as

to why it's not called attack on the technodrome

yeah it's yeah You know At this point they've

done us pretty well so far. They haven't screwed

with our heads too much. They haven't really

Shat all over the franchise like some other franchises

do some other writers and creators do I mean

that as we know This has been going on for four

years now The series premiered four years ago.

I cannot believe that I I was a different human

being four years ago This comic book is as old

as my son. Oh my gosh You know and in four years

they have not you know sure as we've mentioned

all the previous podcasts we've done in this

series. Sure, there's certain things we don't

like, like the My Little Pony feet and whatever

else, but overall, I think between the two of

us, we pretty much love this series. I mean,

with me and the writing, it's not the content

of the writing, it's sometimes how it's said,

but for the most part, Waltz, and let's face

it, Tom Waltz is pretty much... the main writer

for the most part with, you know, Bobby in there

a few times and obviously the co -creator of

the overall franchise there contributing ideas.

And there have been maybe one or two points in

40, the past 40 issues that I've questioned the

way things are said, not what is said, but like

how it's for me, the worst thing is in any, any

doesn't matter what could be turtles could be

human could be whatever it's when they write

something for whatever character it is that i

don't think that's the way the character should

have said it um... you know i i mentioned he

mannered there's one there's a couple of issues

and then abnett's twenty thirteen run uh... uh...

for us to start issue seven of human message

universe from dc where he uses that old timey

talk and you know it just doesn't seem like that's

the way people on Eternia talk for He -Man and

the rest of the universe. Do all the characters

talk like that or just He -Man at that particular

moment? It's the characters in general in the

franchise and in a couple of those issues. Thankfully

he moved away from doing the old timey talk.

It's He -Man, not Thor. Yeah, true. He kind of

turns into Thor. It's a whole other other deal

we actually my buddy a death Baron and I just

last week we did the final Seven issues of the

2013 ongoing because they've changed it now.

They've started a new ongoing called he manned

the eternity war It basically picks up from the

second to last issue of the 2013 ongoing series

and we'll go on from there but um but yeah no

i mean in four years and yeah this series has

been going on four years i think i only found

it what was it last year we started doing these

or was it yeah it was last could i don't even

remember because we there was the why where we

were doing like whole arcs yeah we've done way

too we've done this entire series to death but

we love doing it um yeah i don't even wow that's

that's scary for me folks because usually i remember

every thing you know people say what podcast

number was that or what what what episode was

that and i'm like oh it's this one um all right

looking at it yeah it was wow oh damn you gotta

be kidding me what are we looking at Okay, so

we are recording this January 21st 2015 it will

be out January 28th 2015 we are One year it's

taken us one year To do all of this coverage

from volume one when we first started to now

that's less time than I thought I thought we

had been at it for two years or That's cool.

Yeah, I'm looking at Yeah, yeah, I'm looking

at Yeah, one year. It's taking us one year to

do all of all of 40 issues That's amazing because

I thought it would be a lot longer than that

But yeah, no it only it's only been a year for

us on this and it's just been great I mean it

really really has And you know we get to start

a new arc we get to continue the story and we

get to see the technodrome in action So we'll

be right back with issue 41 after this My mighty

foot soldiers beaten by a bunch of turtles Great

terrific we're on the run and that idiot wants

to chit chat Alright folks, it is issue 41, Attack

on Technodrome part 1, and the cover is The Turtles

Running Away from the Eye of the Technodrome.

You love this cover. I love that cover. It's

my second favorite cover of the entire run, first

being that Nobody and Alopex cover. Right, right.

Yeah, I was just very glad to see what they were

gonna do with that eye because he'd only seen

the technodrome in bits and pieces I think they

showed a part of it all the way back in issue

one or two and it's just this partial sphere

Kind of like Death Star in progress. They didn't

even have the top of it done at that point and

It's like oh, what are they gonna do? Is it just

gonna be like a building? I don't know it, you

know, I know what it's supposed to be but and

they left it wide open enough to Eventually come

up with this wicked eye design, and I like that.

It's even got a cowl this first page here the

the eye is shielded by like a blast shield and

it rises and you see the Iris that starts sparking

lightning. Oh my god. I want to play the the

Nintendo game now Fight the technological the

the second cover, which I believe is by Eastman

or it might be Smith I don't know him both of

it alright is That looks more like Eastman's

style. Yeah, that's what I figured. I don't know

what the hell it's supposed to be. I know it's

the turtles and I know it's a bunch of throwing

stars and someone attacking them, but cover A

is where it is. The technodrome cover is where

it is. So we start out on Burnout Island and

they are about to activate the technodrome and

reveal it. and charge it up and you know the

panel at the bottom here where you see um you

know standby for triggering sequence the technodrome

um it's simply amazing my only question is if

they're on burnout island why is there city stuff

around it assuming this factory they needed to

build the thing oh that's true yeah maybe i mean

because it looks like it looks like it's just

sitting in the middle of the city itself it really

does it's like hey we we sprouted this up from

the ground there's an image near the yet the

city's still in it there's an image near the

end of 42 where they show the whole island and

how big the technodrome is compared to it and

indeed there there was still a city around it

so they are they are aware of continuity yeah

yeah very cool very cool So we get to Stockman

and Fugitoid and they are talking about, you

know, billions of deaths of innocent humans and,

you know, Baxter is his arrogant self. And they

basically get into an argument here. And I love

crowing off, off, off panel, he's like, if you

two imbeciles are done with your blasted whining.

Baxter and Fugitoid, well, more Baxter than Fugitoid,

he's kind of playing that Starscream character

where I'm looking at Krang going, why haven't

you killed this guy yet? Surely there's somebody

else in the entire universe that you can kidnap

who's smarter than this guy and is less likely

to backstab you. But, you know, we've got cool

stuff going on. Yeah, and plus it's Baxter. We

gotta wait until he at least becomes a fly before

we kill him off. Yeah, I think he's gonna get...

teleported or body switched with one of his fly

borgs. And that's how it's going to be. He's

going to be, I don't think he's going to mutate.

I think he's just going to get, he's going to

have to save himself by going into the fly borg

body. Kind of like Fugitoid is stuck in that

body. It's going to be a foil for that. That'd

be interesting to say the least. Alright, so,

um, Krang goes on to say, I'd appreciate some

silence for this next part, and they are testing

the trigger on the technodrome eye, and you can

just see Krang smiling in the panel here, in

the reflection of the red eye, and then it basically

shoots out a bolt of red, and the... I'm trying

to see how it would be in the... Oh, yeah. how

it would be in your physical thing is just this

one whole page here on Comixology Guided View.

It starts at the top and then zooms in on Krang

where he says, beautiful, and it's just creepy.

That's a well -drawn Krang right there. Yeah,

very well -drawn. And we then get to Shredder,

Shredder and Metalhead, aka Donatello. And they're,

you know, talking about joining forces and taking

it to the technodrome and talking about, oh,

betrayal this and betrayal that and whatever

else. And Shetter says, I still find it difficult

to believe you would truly betray your family

in such a manner as this. And Donnie says, I'm

trying to save the world. What do you think of

Donnie? I mean, we find out later what the actual

plan is, and I love how Waltz and Eastman and

Kernel wrote this, to where they are making us

think that Donnie is going against the family.

And we find out later that that's not the case,

but what do you think of this whole arc here

with Shredder and Metalhead? While we're reading

this, when the book dropped, We have we just

came off of turtles in time where we know that

Mike Leo and Raph are dead and it's Donatello's

fault and like right after that we see Donatello

do this thing where he's going out on his own

to their enemy to their mortal enemy and trying

to make a deal and Yes, he's doing it for the

right reasons, but you're kind of you want to

shake Donatello's like what are you doing? This

isn't this is the wrong thing to do. You just

saw your Your brother's dead and you're gonna

you're gonna subject them to this you're gonna

you're gonna drive that away And make it happen.

It's it seems you're you're just kind of no,

this is not a good idea So they're they're taking

us on a ride here. Mm -hmm They're taking us

on one of the worst roller coasters in history

It's like, you know the old, you know, a hundred

year old roller coaster that could fall apart

in a second if one thing goes wrong And I just

love how Donnie is just using Metalhead because

it's a great way to incorporate Metalhead without

him needing to be a comedic character. I don't

remember if he was that comedic in the old series

or the old cartoon series or even the 2003 series.

I honestly don't remember. All I remember of

Metalhead is the toy. I don't remember him. And

from the video game. I don't remember him from

the animated series at all. Yeah, I wish I did.

But I like that they're using him in this way,

so they're paying homage to the character without

actually needing to have him as a fifth turtle.

Because Donatello's controlling him. I absolutely

love that. And Shredder goes on to say, Perhaps,

but getting an army onto Brno Island is a feat

far easier said than done. Logistical considerations

aside, Krang is sure to have his defenses on

high alert. And Donnie goes on to tell him that

he is a mutual spy, mutual friend, and then we

get Metalhead's transformation. and that's all

I can say is it is a transformation there's a

after the after the panel where he says I'll

be in touch soon to hammer out the final details

the very next panel down it reminds me so much

and I know he's not finished the transformation

yet here but it reminds me so much of friggin

t -bob from mask it kind of looks like a scooter

So we have that, and we go back to the lab. Are

you done screwing around yet, Donatello? Maybe.

Good old Kirby fan. So they're testing out the

portal. They're going to test out the portal.

We get to the other part of the team. We get

to Slash, Raph, Gacko, Leo, Herman and Mikey

and you know they're about to you know go do

the fighting and whatever else and They actually

slash look at slash slash breach I know slash

is smart now But I just have hulk's voice in

my head when he did when he does stuff when he

says stuff that that is usually a hulk speak

It's like oh god. I think that was actually that's

like somebody's command. I think who's doing.

Oh Probably Herman giving him the command to

breach the door. Yeah, probably reaching is one

of those not Call of Duty, Rainbow Six Commands,

I remember from playing that game. And they all

get ambushed. And it's a really, really interesting

fight. Because I honestly don't know who the

heck they're fighting in here. Like they're breaking

into this place. I'll let you, I remember, but

I'll let you figure it out. Oh, wait. They're

breaking into Hobbs' warehouse? What the hell?

They're training. Oh, that's right. Okay, yeah,

yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Dang it, I said

I was gonna let you figure it out. Dang it. I

know, I know. My fault. That's all right. But

that's, it's not, not too bad. I just, and see,

this is one of those things in the writing that

I kind of, like it makes it feel to me that they're...

That they've already done training, you know

what I mean and But yeah, no, I mean, I love

the whole thing of multiple teams and splitting

off and with as many characters as they have

now In this series, you would have to have multiple

teams, which is so great And it's interesting

to see who teams up with who Luckily, they can

all work together without any animosity other

than the animosity between them and hob and I

think that's part of the reason that they're

training too is that these guys are a lot of

them are former enemies and it's just yeah probably

a good idea to make sure everybody knows that

everybody's doing not that they can compete with

the turtles and their uh two lives worth of working

together so you know um so you know They you

know they start talking about the battle and

Rob says it'd be nice if we can get that egghead

son of yours into the mix too You're right it

does look like an egg it kind of does And Leo's

like we need to have a family meeting in private

Yeah, and then they go on to say well, but we're

all mutants. Yeah. Well, we are all mutants but

Family is a whole different kind of thing We

then get to this week's or this month's soap

opera Domesticated April and Casey and I still

I still, please, Corey Smith, please let her

hair grow out. Damn it, I still hate the short

hair on April. You mentioned the fact that they're

domestic. I don't know if I've ever gone into

this. In the later issues of the Mirage run,

yeah, they do get together. And April, in that

series, is a scientist. She worked for Baxter.

She, you know, college graduate and everything.

And when that... whole alien thing happened.

She didn't go back to being a scientist after

that, and they had the antique store burned down

just like in the movie. But she never goes back

to doing that kind of work, and her and Casey

move in together, and Casey's a mook. He doesn't

do anything, holds down the kind of car repair

type jobs, but the two of them are like... Upper

lower class or they're at the high end of low

class living in the upstairs of this antique

store and they're really Like rednecks in that

kind of way. They're grubby And I look at that

and go man, you know, the comic book thing is

supposed to be you know Bruce Wayne's a billionaire

and and Tony starts a billionaire our heroes

in the Ninja Turtles books live in a ratty apartment

above an antique store that burnt down a long

time ago and The place smells like the sewer

because their buddies who live in the sewer come

and visit them all the time and they comment

about man It stinks in here and I feel bad for

them like April you deserved so much more and

you could have brought Casey with you But instead

your lot in life is holding each other down So

I'm looking at these guys kind of I think they

have better hopes than the Mirage Casey in April

Oh, but I absolutely I just don't know if they're

gonna do it either. You know, I don't know. I

hope well, I mean they're Where are they? Are

they at? They're probably at the antique store.

Yeah, that's right. They're still at the store.

Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, when she goes

on to talk about, you know, talking about she

feels like she's letting the guys down and everything

else and, you know, he tries to encourage her,

which is great. I love that Casey is kind of

pulling out of this whole depressive state now.

Where he he has found a purpose and he even says

in this a couple panels ago here He says, you

know doing all this stuff around the shop and

whatever else it it feels more fun than work

and You know, that's great that we're seeing

a turnaround for Casey Which is so wonderful

because I mean, let's face it that guy's been

through way too much in 40 issues Yeah, so So

April tells Casey that You know, she says Casey

do you remember that professor who helped the

foot clan against us? Dr. Miller He says you

mean the guy with the magic book Exactly. I've

seen him sulking around campus again lately He

knows more about the foot clan than anyone else

can't hurt to see if he's feeling talkative uh...

so they kinda they don't argue about it but uh...

you know he just says you know promise me you're

gonna be careful whatever you do they kiss uh...

and she goes off and Casey just standing there

like hmm well alright that's done and I love

this whole scene here after she's gone because

he's like alright Jones the maintenance stuff

is done for the day Now it's time for some security.

He suits up and I just... I just wish... I mean,

I know that this is just a regular shirt that

he's wearing, but like when he's suited up, I

wish he had a... I don't know. It just looks

weird, the blue and the white shirt. I know that's

stupid to say, but with the mask on, he just

doesn't look as menacing as he would with a different

color on him. He's the low -budget superhero,

but in the real world, if there was going to

be a superhero, it'd be a dude wearing a hockey

mask. Character the guy who thinks he needs to

go outside and beat up purse snatchers with sporting

equipment You purse grubbing pukes So we get

back to the laboratory with Donnie and Harold

and they're testing the portal and and apparently

Donnie's coordinates are Paris and you know he

he goes and and comes back and uh he the hell

does he throw him oh he threw no i i couldn't

i i know what he throws him but it didn't in

the panel where where uh where harold says so

and then donnie says so and throws him something

the the drawing of it is kind of it's meant to

be like what the hell is that it's not too clear

that's motion lines yeah um He throws him a souvenir

of the Eiffel Tower and he says, it's raining

in Paris. So the teleporter works. We go back

to Shredder and they're basically ready to attack

Verno Island. We have Bebop, Rocksteady, Hun,

Koya, and Bludgeon. Bludgeon is just like...

bebop rocksteady and koya i can see but bludgeon

just seems to be heat the only other time that

we've seen him is in turtles in time right uh...

when uh... he's i don't think he's in turtles

in time he was when the when shredder attacked

the boat yeah issue thirty seven okay so in issue

thirty seven we only see him in the water i was

not expecting him to have like Don't know I was

expecting something completely different from

what we get from him like I would I Was expecting

him to be more like I hate to say this but be

more like fish face from the cartoon series the

the 2012 series where he has to have mechanical

legs because let's face it fish face is just

a giant fish and You know, I was expecting that,

you know a little bit more But, I mean, I don't

know, I like it. I think it's cool. I'm wondering

if he is what we get because they don't have

the rights to the shark from the Future Shark

trilogy of the Archie series, Armagon. Could

be. There's a panel I can unconscious Donatello

and his head is in Armagon, the big shark's hands,

I wonder. But, you know, we'll find out, I guess,

at some point. Yep. So they're going about giving

the plans and whatever else and apparently Shredder

has a special mission for Bebop and Rocksteady

and he and Karai have a conversation and she

basically says to him, Master, I'm not convinced

it is wise to trust the turtles. Turtle called

Domitello. I have seen them together. They are

extremely loyal to each other and even the direst

of circumstances. His son willingness to work

with you does not ring true to me. As it should

not, granddaughter, I believe we are simply the

enemy of the turtle's enemy. At the moment he

is using that fact to his advantage. So I love

how the two of them are interacting here. And

he says besides I have insured retribution Should

should this not tell her dare to betray me and

of course Rocksteady and bebop in the background

bebops like you that rock a special mission Like

I wasn't expecting Koya or bludgeon to say anything

in this entire scene, but Just the fact that

out of the four mutants that shredder has bebop

and rocksteady are the most vocal We get back

to Brno Island and Fugitoid and Baxter and they

basically have an argument back and forth, back

and forth. They supposedly team up. Now the panel

where they shake hands, is that supposed to be

a camera? No. I hope not. If there were more

reflections within the panel, I think that's

just kind of zooming in on their handshake. We

had to go back and reread this since I just read

42 today because this tells me that their game

in the next issue where they're kind of stabbing

each other in the back while Krang's watching

and laughing is not literally stabbing. But anyway,

there's a reason for it. And then we get to another

close -up shot of Krang. Can this really be happening

at long last home? And just like home and we

see that he is He's basically in the the destroyed

area of what the technodrome did earlier in this

issue That's a really interesting shot of him

when he says new trauma non Where his body's

holding him up? Wow. Here's an interesting theory

that doesn't mean anything. Crank's from Dimension

X, and I think they call it Dimension X, don't

they? So like it's a parallel universe and...

They've got to terraform Earth, that's what the

technodrome's gonna do, and it terraform this

area to make it like his home planet. I'm wondering

if, you know, kind of in that sciency thing,

if it's not just terraforming, not just changing

the air that they've gotta do, but he can't exist

in this? No, because other critters have come

and gone from that dimension, so that's out.

But I was thinking, like, he can't exist in this

dimension, this time space, and so the terraforming

is actually kind of warping the Earth's time

space. But no! Cool as that would be there are

even critters coming back and forth from dimension

X and they can breathe just fine So this is something

different. This is home planet air. Yeah, I mean

and he's standing Like I said, he's basically

standing in the destroyed area. He's not back.

No, no, no, he's you know, it's the terraformed

Right, so I would hesitate to call it destroyed

because it's just it's been changed to be his

heir and whatever else U -Trums need. But haven't

we seen him? We've seen him in the past. He's

been in the suit. Quote -unquote in the past

when he was on Earth. That wasn't Earth. That

was his. Oh, that's right. That was the other.

And the U -Trums that were on Earth. in the past

with the dinosaurs were in suits, were in the

little capsules. They can't live on Earth. And

Shredder, when they were battling each other,

cracked the glass and Krang had to back off because

he wouldn't make it. That's right, that's right.

Okay, okay. I'm straight now. All right. Well,

we get a really nice panel of... All is I can

think of is friggin hot rod from 86 here Ultra

Magnus here is the matrix because we get a really

nice shot of the body holding crying up and we

have the technodrome in the background With the

eyeball and the blast of air and everything else

and that's kind of how this one ends where it's

to be continued where he is terraformed part

of the city and I For a first part it said that

they do so well in the writing korey smith on

the art i'm loving i don't think at this point

i don't think i've enjoyed the design of crying

himself yeah until so much until korey smith

got ahold of him cuz he doesn't look is grotesque

and he doesn't make my stomach churn as much

as the other side of the path uh... but absolutely

loving loving this and you know again the writing

they're pulling us into the path of all of these

things happening and you have so much going on

here but it makes so much sense all at the same

time usually when you have so many different

characters and so many different storylines something

gets lost along the way nothing gets lost along

the weather darkness picking it up absolutely

You know something I realized looking at that

last page that my webcam looks like the technodrome

eye Okay now that that's just creepy That's just

creepy you have a technodrome eye as your webcam

I totally do oh my god That's just creepy as

all I am. Now I want the old technodrome toy

and I'll just mount my webcam on top of it. Wow.

Let's get a broken one. Oh wow, that's crazy.

That is so crazy. Oh man. So do you want to take

a break for 442? Uh, yeah, we're gonna take a

break before 42, that way we can put in some

classic TMNT audio and everything else. We'll

be back after this. So let's say you're looking

the 80s, we will cover it at some point. Yes,

so what you want to do to find us, you can go

to iTunes, you can go to www .starjose .com,

and remember, the force will be with you, because

knowing us is half the battle. Alright folks,

issue 42. The main cover, cover A, is the Shredder

and... Kitsune in the background? Yeah. Shredder

and Kitsune at the top of the city. Karai and

Hun in the middle, and then all the mutants around

them, Koya, Bludgeon, Rocksteady and Bebop. I

like this cover, but... wish they would have

done something a little bit more interesting

I Mean, I know what last issue It was the turtles

running down the technical room in the eye getting

ready to fire and this is basically showing off

the villains But it's not showing off all the

villains that the turtles have to go out. I don't

know I kind of I Like the cover design overall,

but I wish it just kind of I don't know. It's

just weird Yeah, there's there's something about

the composition. That's not the strongest yeah

and If I analyze that it would feel too much

like work, so I'm not going to I Actually out

of on this issue. I actually prefer Eastman's

cover be that's a first. Oh, I gotta go. I know

right It's oh yeah, that actually is kind of

cool It's a black and red reddish pink cover

with Basically classic 87 shredder. I mean granted.

He's in black and red and silver, but I mean

if you look at that design he pretty much nailed

the classic 87 shredder face mask and shoulder

blades and Whatever else yeah, those wrist blades

are definitely 87 version not oh Absolutely,

I guess the shoulders and that snuggie around

his neck or this version, but Yeah, yeah, yeah,

the snuggie around his neck. At least it's not

draping halfway down the front of him But that

that whole helmet and face mac and mask is definitely

87 I hope if they do another cover like this

that they really do a good homage to the 90 Shredder

Design that would be amazing from them from the

movie That's still my favorite version of the

shredder both attitude voice how he carries himself

a big fan of that so we start off issue 42 with

you know, everybody's getting everything loaded

attack on technical part two and We have We have

a hub, you know, this cat's ready to rumble And

he asked them if they're getting cold feet and

whatever else and come to find out that We're

amphibians. Of course we have cold feet. No,

they don't actually say that but they should

Wow There's a rimshot app when you really need

one So come to find out Raph Leo and Mikey are

not going with splinter and old hob and the rest

of the games kind of announced this as they're

loading up for this mission that they've been

training for for I Don't know how many imaginary

weeks Yeah, and you know basically Raph is like

you heard him furball. We got other things. We

got a handle And hob is thinking that he's going

that they're gonna betray him and everything

else and and uh you know and I almost wish this

moment was more Raph being emotional than Mikey

but I do like where you know the panel where

Mikey's like guys I'm really scared this whole

thing what if you know and Splinter calms him

and they all bow to each other and the three

turtles walk off and and hob goes on to say well

first we're missing one which was bad enough

now all four are history you realize this little

rump's gonna be a hell of a lot harder without

their help right rat? he would be correct old

hob oh i see now i see what they did When we

get to the next panel here where Splinter says

in the in the quotations if it were true that

my sons are no longer helping us And we see Brunei

Island and see I thought that from the previous

image that I was talking about in 41 I Didn't

like I just thought it was a few buildings. I

didn't realize it was an entire city on the island

that has built up like see I thought It was showing

it in the middle like it just you know came up

from the ground Like in the old animated series

in the middle of the middle of New York I think

this thing's gonna end up underground at some

point at least I hope it does just to you know

do the homage thing, but Absolutely, that would

be awesome Issue 100 it comes up in the middle

of New York As long as we can get past the 73

curse sure yep So, Baxter and Fugitoid start

what I assume is their charade. Yeah, now that

I've seen and remember what happened last month,

I'm looking at this going, oh, maybe they're

doing that on purpose. Right. And Fugitoid says,

I have intelligence that Shredder and the Foot

are attacking the island today. And we switch

to the next panel and you just see crying, what

did you say? The colors from Rhonda Pattinson.

Pattison. The design from Corey Smith. This is

one of the best panels with Krang in it. This

is so great. Absolutely amazing. Krang basically

grabs him by the throat which isn't going to

do anything. It's a robot. He's demanding that

Fugitoid tell him who. And as this thing goes

along, we see that Stockman is going to betray

Honeycutt. That's where I kind of lost the whole

thing with the Charade, because it's like, is

he really doing this? Yeah, it's hard to tell,

and you don't know for a good long while what

this is about. Yeah. And the Turtles go to Harold's

Workshop. And it turns out that they are indeed

all working together. And Mikey puts on some

sort of gadget. I don't know what the hell that

thing is. This is so funny. He puts on the gadget.

The next panel is, hey, put that down. It's Metalhead

against Mikey. But it's it's Harold doing the

remotes the remote access like Donnie's did when

when he sent it to shredder and obviously Donnie

doesn't want anybody, you know that they care

about to have Have you know in close proximity

of all the destruction so he kind of sent Harold

to a different location and he's remote controlling

the thing What do you think of the four of them

coming back together now? Well knowing that they

never really actually broke up It feels a lot

better knowing that they're together. I'm regaining

confidence in the team at this point. They had

me worried and worried in a good dramatic kind

of, I want to know what happens next way, but

this is our chance to kind of take a breath and

go, okay, they're still together and that counts.

That's good. And this is where Donnie tells him

that, you know, You know, you three can go through

now, but I'm not going and Leo's like, wait,

what? And he's like, well, somebody's got to

work, you know, sit here and work the machines

and with Harold off site and, you know, I'm not

going and, and we get the teleporter. Thankfully

they aren't transported to another dimensions,

New York city, which we will talk about next

time around when we talk about the TMNT Ghostbusters

four issue mini series. uh... and he says just

one more thing i want you all to know i i really

love you guys and uh... you know they go through

the portal uh... and we then see it's so uh...

i love metalhead in this series because since

he's been introduced And since he's a controllable

robot and he doesn't have, at least to this point,

he doesn't have his own sentience, it's so weird

seeing him in the different situations that they

put him in. He is now with the Shredder. Well,

before we go there, we're missing a very important

moment. As the turtles step into the portal,

Donnie says, hey, one more thing. I really love

you guys. And Leo, Mike, Don, I'm sorry, Leo,

Mike and Raff are like, yeah, us too, bro. And

they're gone. And over the com, Harold says why

didn't you tell them and Don says they've got

enough to worry about This moment has me concerned

because of turtles in time That like does Donnie

know that they're gonna die and of course, they're

not gonna die It's a ninja turtles. It's a comic

book and they can't kill off three of their main

characters and have it be Donatello the Teenage

Mutant Ninja Turtle It wouldn't be but that moment

gives me something to worry about and I'm concerned,

you know What's gonna happen there? So that they're

planting a seed and it's I'm sure going to pay

off before the end of War on the technodrome

Yeah So shredder and the troops arrive because

they're led by metalhead they get into the shop

and I Swear bebop and rocksteady are just like

Mikey check it out Not now, Harold, and who might

that be? Just someone who's gonna help you get

to Brunei Island. Are you ready? And they talk

about Double Cross, and apparently the special

mission for Bebop and Rocksteady is they're gonna

stay there and babysit Donatello. Bebop's hand

is cradling Donnie's head and he's giving him

that brother punch in the arm, which probably

hurts a real lot. It's so hilarious. It really,

really is. Where are your babysitters? I love

what they've done with those two. They're so

entertaining while not being childish and silly.

Yep. So they all enter the portal and Shredder's

like, remember Donatello, betrayal is death.

Yeah, death. Because he had there's no one turtle

against those two is as bad as they screwed up

a team of seven I think one turtle doesn't stand

a chance unless Donnie he's playing the head.

He's no Batman. He doesn't have a way out yet

But Donnie's a fast thinker okay, sure Donnie

is no Batman. He doesn't have you know The next

twenty steps planned out, but he's a fast thinker.

He can get out of any situation and all he really

has to do is run away. Well, he has to. He has

to run away in a way where he takes them with

him, but then loses them after he's out of. Harold's

workshop because he can't just escape and leave

them there because knowing the two of them They'll

either you know top of the building down on top

of themselves or they'll do something to the

portal that screws everything up and next thing

you know we'll have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

meets My Little Pony or Transformers or X - Well,

we already had X -Files or, you know, Spyro and

Skylanders or something. And I hear IDW is doing

Disney Comics soon, so we might get missing Scrooge

McDuck. Guys, we fit in here! Can anybody understand

what that duck dressed up like a sailor is saying?

Oh dude, if they could get Ace, oh crap, I forgot

if we asked, I'll have to go back and listen

to our interview with Bobby if we asked him about

Ace the Duck. That would be amazing if they could

get Ace in this series. If Ace Duck comes from

the Disneyverse, I don't know if that's a good

idea or a genius idea, I can't tell. Ace Duck

is Launch Pad. Oh my god, you're right. Oh my

god, that's hilarious. Okay back to the right

so it's great. No, no, it's it's on topic So

we end with We end with betrayal is death in

this in this page here and now Rock's day is

like and people like dad So we get to professor

Miller, I believe Miller is yeah, yeah professor

Miller and it's April she's waiting in his office

and She is basically enlisting his help You know

and he's worried about his safety and all this

and all that and And he says to her, uh, so what,

you know, he's, she says, good, I'm glad we're

in agreement. You help us and we help you. Good.

So what do you have planned? Honestly, professor,

that's still part, still a work in progress.

So we get back to hub and gecko and all of them

and splinter. And they are, and then this is

where we find out. the master plan of the turtles

because you know we go back to earlier and I

don't know how earlier this is like I wish Bobby

or Tom or somebody would have said right after

turtles in time or right after issue this or

issue that it just says earlier Don't know if

it's earlier that day that they finally revealed

it to him. Yeah, it was it was before they went

and Told old hob I mean it was right before they

went and told old hob that they weren't gonna

be there Okay, they left it to the last minute

to tell splinter because he was kind of freaking

out Yeah, and this is where we get the master

plan reveal. What do you think of this master

plan? I Am impressed at its complexity And it

almost I don't know. It kind of felt like they

were setting this up for a long time. And yeah,

I mean, I guess it was a long time ago when when

Donnie left because he was tired of listening

to them. That was like four or five issues ago.

It almost feels like this is kind of, hey, guys,

wouldn't it be cool if when they were writing

like the issue before? But no, they're too smart

to plan that short ad. They knew this was coming.

I gotta have faith in them So I'm impressed at

the complexity and it's that kind of dangerous

complexity where there's double double crossing

They've got their backs their their bases covered

where I'm afraid that something isn't gonna go

right something's gonna lose but absolutely I'm

loving the plan yeah I love that they and I really

do enjoy that they kept splinter in the dark

for this long because it's not that they didn't

trust him but they needed to be really you know

and he says why didn't you tell me of this earlier

we honestly we wanted you We wanted to do to

father but we were so focused on going after

shredder that we or you were so focused on going

after we just didn't know how to include you

without risking the plan and I just absolutely

love that um, and I love I love his reaction

to it that he's truly impressed by them and We

get yeah what that moment is too is it's leo

coming into his own as the leader Where splinters?

Maybe not exactly seeing him as an equal, but

he's getting there. And I admire that. And the

one thing I love about this series, and it's

really coming to fruition here in this issue,

is that it's not just Leo. Yes, Leo is the leader.

We all know through the last 31 years of the

franchise that Leo has always been the leader.

But in this series, in this plan, it's all of

them. It's not just Leo. It's Leo and Donnie

and Raph and Mikey. It's all four of them. I'm

not sure how much Raph and Mikey actually contributed

to it, but, you know, it's the four brothers

making a plan, sticking to it, and they're gonna

kill two birds with one stone. Hopefully. Hopefully

is the key word there. Hopefully. So wait, what

is Old Hob attacking? I thought he was attacking

Stock Gen. Because they mention here that...

they're gonna go well no okay they're gonna go

attack stock gen the three turtles didn't teleport

to burnout island like they told the shredder

they were going to do they teleported to the

abandoned foot headquarters and they're gonna

trash it and they're gonna let shredder and crank

beat the snot out of each other yeah while there

must be an inside job destroying the technodrome

who's doing that that's maybe it is That's honey

-cut. Yeah, that would make sense. So I don't

even think we know what this whole plan is. Donnie

and I, I'd have to reread this whole page and

I don't want to do that to our listeners. Be

silent for like three minutes. You know, so and

Leo's ends with our plan father. We're all in

this together now and if it works out, if our

luck holds, you know. We then cut to Shredder

and the Foot against planning an attack on Bernal

Island. I love the background colors in this.

I love their juxtaposition against the... Go

ahead. Found it. Sorry, I interrupted that train

of thought. Go ahead. Shredder has no clue that

Krang is going to be waiting for him because

Honeycutt warned him that they're coming. And

he ain't heard nothing yet since, say, tell him

the rest, Leo, Raph says. Well, while Shredder

and Krang go at it... And while you and old Hob's

gang attacked the poorly -defendant Foot headquarters,

they're not doing StockGen yet? No, they're not

doing StockGen. StockGen's gone, remember? Burnout

Island is the new StockGen. StockGen in itself

is gone, right? I don't know if it's completely

gone. The scientists were still there. I mean,

that's where they got Slash from, because it

was still operating. I don't know if they took

out the whole thing. I know StockMen's gone,

but... Yeah, because he's with Kraeng and Fugitoid.

What beef does Old Hob have with Shredder? I

thought he was on his old anti -mutant kick,

and we're gonna go destroy those people who painfully

created all of us mutants. That's what it is.

That's what it is. Well, but... Oh man, you're

making my head hurt. So now we need to figure

that out, but at least now I know that the rest

of us, Don, Mike, and Leo... Or I'm Mike Leo

and Raph are gonna go do the technodrome thing

with fugitoids help Okay, now I got it okay,

and So we get to this big battle scene with all

of Krang's rock soldiers in army and marine type

fatigue things and you know an amazing shot to

the red I have to call him this because it looks

like the red skull foot soldier to shredder's

left He gets basically she gets his face shot

off And cranks like welcome to burnout island

They're like protect the master you can try and

then we have oh man I wish I had I might have

to have a buddy of mine take these two panels

because I know in yours It's on one page, but

on mine with the guided view on comixology the

annihilate them and foot attack is two separate

up -and -down panels I'm gonna have to have a

buddy of mine take these two panels and mesh

them together as one image because that just

is amazing That's awesome So, we start out an

all -out battle between the foot and Krang's

troops. And, you know, they're going to, you

know... Basically, General Krang says, Grenadier,

trag with me. Our forces can finish the others.

We have other business to attend to. And it's...

That's the final page and it's a to be continued

and that full page there with Krang and His two

generals there and then shred it's so weird that

they put shredder and his for in the rest of

the forces On the side of being in front of the

technodrome in the final page. It looks amazing

But it's just it's a little strange to me, but

I love that final page And that is so badass

Overall thoughts on issue 42, sir? This was the

most tense and exciting one I've read in a while.

I always enjoy those moments of drama and of

family and that really came out with Leo explaining

the plan to Splinter and having Splinter kind

of snap out of his weird little funk that he's

been in since Northampton. Yeah, that's true.

Very true. Yeah, so that's Attack on Technodrome

parts 1 and 2. So far, it's a slow build, but

it's not a bad slow build because we have so

much action going on and we have all these different

working parts to the whole thing. Just absolutely

loving it. These teams, the writing team, the

art team, they honestly can do no wrong at this

point. Short of a my little pony crossover that

you mentioned earlier. I don't think they can

do any wrong Well, you know If they can cross

over with Ghostbusters, I mean You know and I

only brought that up in case you know, you know

when we were talking about Donnie's, you know

potential escape plan Getting away from like

if he left Bebop and Rocksteady in Harold's lab,

you know But those two, if they were left to

their own devices with a teleporter, I mean,

OK. So if you don't want a My Little Pony crossover,

what if they tapped into the federation and brought

the USS Enterprise into the train? You know what

I'm saying? It's like, if you leave Bebop and

Rocksteady to their own devices in a place where

there is a teleporter, And potentially there's

something that could go wrong with the teleporter

where it reaches into another dimension or another

timeline. There's so many things that go wrong.

Just so many things. It's like Bebop and Rox

today are those kids. Do not touch anything.

They're worse than Mikey. Oh yeah. All right,

folks. What do you got going on with your garage

sale aren't you having a summer garage sale?

I mean, I know it's still January here, but I

mean we came off the Christmas one and Folks

are always asking for another one. There's one

of those coming up in June, probably the second

or third week. That's in Grand Rapids, Michigan

on the north end of town here. We'll do that.

We have a new location because our beloved comic

store that we had been hosting it at in their

parking lot closed. We lost apparitions in Grand

Rapids. Sad day, but the geek sale will live

on and continue in June. awesome awesome how's

your shredder costume going I haven't touched

it because it's cold outside and I don't weld

when it's 19 degrees but I do have the gauntlets

and we'll get those we'll get those on someday

alright folks that's gonna do it for January

first first month of year three of the pull bag

so this month we have had uh... we had finally

i got around to doing dark horse comics are to

reader issues one through four uh... written

by gail simone and origins of the so without

the bottomless and last week we had messes universe

uh... he messes universe thirteen to nineteen

uh... coming up in february as i mentioned last

week uh... episode ninety eight if i can get

the trade by that time it's going to be grim

fairy tales robin hood origin and it's are all

be why and it's a female robin hood there reinvent

the Robin Hood story. Potentially for Valentine's

Day we're gonna do Punisher Bloody Valentine.

And third week in February it's gonna be Steve

Megatron and I doing Batman Beyond 10 ,000 Clowns

and Batgirl Beyond and we will probably do another

Transformers coverage at the end of February

and then Marvelous March kicks off this year

we're doing Last year, when I first started Marvelous

March and doing Marvel coverage, I wanted to

pretty much cover a lot of classic stories from

classic characters. So we had Captain America

and Hulk and Spider -Man and Wolverine and Iron

Man. This year, we're going to continue with

those same characters, but we're going to pretty

much limit it. It's not going to be limited,

but we're going to do, instead of classic stories,

we're going to do modern coverage. I'm going

to cover Savage Wolverine Volume 1. uh... jeremy

fine and i are gonna finish up the avengers and

x -men access issues and uh... avengers and x

-men access uh... revolutions one through four

uh... and then i'm gonna do iron man volume one

believe in superior iron man issues one through

four This might change, but I'm not sure yet

and finally for marvelous March will do amazing

spider -man volume one This is the new series.

This is after he came back from the dead yet

again I was loving superior so much. I wish they

would have never brought Peter back Not having

read the series yet. I say that but you know

it's just one of those things I'm really upset

that Brian Bendis brought back Peter Parker in

Ultimate Spider -Man 2 also Like if I could have

counted on one person to kill off a character

and not bring him back It would have been Brian

Bendis because he loves Spider -Man and he's

been itching for a chance to do his own Spider

-Man That's what Miles Morales Spider -Man is

but what do you know Bendis? You brought Peter

Parker back? He's not spider -man. He's gone

off on his own. He's on gone into hiding I don't

think we're gonna see him for a while, but dang

it. He's alive and I feel cheated Next time you're

gonna hear Joe and I talk about issues 43 and

44 before that we'll probably do the TMNT Ghostbusters

crossover that's gonna be interesting and at

some point I'd like to do our Is that yeah the

25th anniversary of the 1990 movie I'm Still

a great film and and we need to do a commentary

to that I think oh Yeah As long as the commentary

isn't us just reciting the entire movie, because

that is what it could very easily be. I'd like

not to do that, but I can't make any promises,

listeners. No, we can't. And that's another thing

I want to bring up, folks. We're at the, like

I said, we're at the fourth week of January here,

January 28th, 2014. Don't know how many I'm calling

them comic Terry's because commentary on a just

calling it a commentary on a on a Comic podcast

just seems a little strange to me But we are

gonna do a couple of commentaries or comic Terry's

this year. We're not gonna do a lot of them So

but turtles will definitely be one since the

film is 25 years old So Oh god, that means that

two years ago, the third film was 20 years old.

Oh my god. Oh, it hurts. So, but yeah, no, there's

gonna be plenty of Turtles coverage here in 2015

for the pull bag. And I'm sure at some point,

Joe and I will be doing some other stuff. Like

I know we've mentioned about getting into the

Ghostbusters series, even though I think that...

either has already or will end at some point.

I have a feeling it's just going to get renumbered

and continue. I don't know IDW doesn't do as

far as my my experience with IDW I haven't seen

them do like a Marvel thing or a DC thing where

they you know start over and renumber. The Ghostbusters

already did. Okay, after I think 13 it got renumbered

no they did that they did a real Ghostbusters

line where the Ghostbusters are trapped in an

alternate dimension and Janine and a couple other

background characters strapped on packs and replaced

them and When the Ghostbusters came back and

started over at one But I've I've also heard

that it's ending But it was kind of said with

this weird little wink and I wasn't sure if it's

ending or if it's restarting. So we'll find out.

But it's a terrific series with a lot of love

for both the animated TV show and the movies.

And even the video game. They bring in the cool

Xbox 360 PS3 video game. Awesome. Alright folks,

that's gonna do it for us. Make your great escape
