About this Episode

Mike and Joe return to discuss issue #2 of IDW's TMNT Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything, exploring the time-travel chaos as the story jumps between past, present, and future versions of the characters. They break down the multiverse-spanning narrative with eight versions of Bebop and Rocksteady colliding, the emotional reunion between Raph and Pepperoni, the appearance of alternate Renettes, and the explosive cliffhanger that sets up the remaining issues. Time travel headaches abound as the hosts marvel at the intricate plotting while spoiling the full contents a week after release.

Hey, this is Tom Waltz, IUW's Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtle writer, and we have jumped inside

the pull bag. Welcome to The Pull Bags Back Issue

Classics. Join us as we talk about comics from

yesteryear, from DC, Marvel, and more. So open

your ears to hear our discussion. of the older

continuities, as the back -issue classics are

also what's in the pullback. Very well. I have

my own mutants. Bebop! Rocksteady! Destroy them!

With great pleasure, Master Shredder! Hello and

welcome to the pull bag this is back issue classics

this is continuing our destroy everything month

here in june on the pull bag because we are talking

about idw's tmnt bebop and rocksteady destroy

everything number two i am one of your host tfg1

mike joining me as always for the tmnt stuff

is joe reid hello hello how are you i am ecstatic

as today at about eight o 'clock in the morning

uh No, it wasn't eight. A little later than that.

Anyway, I'm browsing the eBay and I find the

last issue that I needed for the Mirage run of

Turtles. Not the main lines, but even the little

side books. So I immediately purchased Donatello

Brain Thief Number One. Everything Mirage has

ever published Ninja Turtles now belongs to me

as soon as it arrives here. So that got me excited.

That's that's my big news for the day Other news

that will kind of relate to this Sunday yeah,

Sunday my son and I went to see the new Ninja

Turtles movie and So there's there's cool stuff

going on. Yes Out of the shadows I miss Elias

but Amel's a good Casey they Elias is old at

this point so he was the perfect Casey and uh

anything else is not a poor substitute but just

it can't live up to him um I I don't know I don't

know how spoilery I want to get so I'm going

to kind of be vague and say things like I'm not

happy with where they took Casey um Stephen Amell

is great and I love him and I want him to be

successful I don't want him to be green arrow

forever um But I just think he's one of a few

actors who gets completely crapped on when it

comes to people writing for him. So that was

a disappointing thing, but I can get over it.

I'll say this about Out of the Shadows, and this

is not a spoiler. The voicing was much better.

No Johnny Knoxville this time! It wasn't Johnny

Knoxville? No! That never bothered me. I thought

it was... I think Leonardo's voice for me has

always been kind of the most generic of them,

and as it should be. I don't know, it shouldn't

stand out. Who was it this time? I knew you would

ask me that. If it's nobody big, then it's nobody

big. I don't know off the top of my head. But

yeah. I mean, really... I, you know, I've seen

the movie and I... I'll say this, it was a hell

of a lot more fun than the first movie. Yeah,

I enjoyed this quite a bit more than the first

one. I was nervous, I was prepared not to like

this movie, but it ended up being amazing. Not

amazing, it was just, it was way better than

the first one. One of the things that I had been

concerned about from the beginning was when I

knew that the sequel got greenlit, I was hoping

that they would take that opportunity to redesign

the turtles, to make them smaller, to make them

softer, to get rid of the crap on them. The trailers

are coming through and I'm like, ah, great, they

look the same. But when you see them and they

have their sit down talking scenes, you realize,

yeah, they are smaller. They don't have... The

lips aren't as pronounced the the crap on their

shells and everything is there's a way less of

it Like leonardo doesn't have that weird bamboo

armor across his chest and and that's kind of

a motif that went through all four of them So

I I was more pleased with it. The characterizations

were good in the turtles. It's like it felt like

the turtles this time All in all a much better

movie it was pete pelosic I don't know, I've

never even heard of the guy. His name isn't even

linked on Wikipedia. But everyone else for the

voice cast return, Alan Richson as Raph, Noel

Fisher as Mikey, Jeremy Howard as Donnie, Tony

Shalhoub as Splinter, and then of course you

had Gary Anthony Williams and Steven Seamus Farrelly

as Rocksteady. And boy did I enjoy them too.

Did you get the sense, I mean it was just...

completely, I don't know if it was intentional

or convenient or fate that we're reading this

as the movie comes out, but those two felt like

IDWs. I think IDW planned this because June is

a five Wednesday month. This is a five -issue

series. And they knew the movie was coming out

on June 3rd. So I think it's like, hey, once

you've seen the movie, head on over to IDW and

check out their mini -series that they're doing

with the characters fronts. So Bebop and Rocksteady

destroy everything number two. The main cover

is done by Nick Batara. I believe I'm saying

his name properly. If I'm not, I'm sorry, Nick.

And the sub cover is done by Sophie Campbell.

Nick's cover, I like, but I don't know. I just,

I like Sophie's more because it's, it's Raffaroni

essentially. It's, it's it's it's raf and his

little buddy pepperoni from the past um so that

was a nice a nice throwback because i wasn't

sure because when they said and we've talked

about this we're talking about this last time

when we did number one we weren't exactly sure

like how the time periods were going to really

be unfolding and i figured that they would have

gone to places that the turtles had already been

to in time since it's a whole renette thing and

but this issue oh my god this this issue it's

like time travel gives us headaches folks seriously

yeah i i think this book is gonna be very very

confusing until the very last issue and i think

we're seeing things uh that we won't understand

until later and even things where they think

or i think They explain it. I think we're gonna

find out, like, no, that's not what happened.

Every time we see the turtles or rocks, or you'll

be able to see somebody travel through time,

it's rendered as these tubes, these tunnels,

and there are forks, and they divide. And you'll

see some of the turtles go down this tunnel,

and some of them go down that tunnel. And I think,

like, everything is completely mixed up, and

they're experiencing each other out of order.

And it's not gonna make sense until we see it

all. And the funny thing is about the you know

the pages you're talking about with the with

the time tunnels and all that that that giant

page where you see them following Savanti and

Then you see them going off all going off in

different You know what I thought of and I know

this is bad. I know everyone hates this and I

don't care First thing I thought of was the opening

scene of the animation in Super Mario Brothers

Super Show when they go down the That's the first

thing I thought of when I saw these two pages.

Do people not like that show? Because that was

amazing back in the day. Well, I like it, but

a lot of people don't. Well, they're allowed

to be wrong. It's okay. So we start off in Rio,

where they were fighting Bebop and Rocksteady.

And I know, folks, if you've been listening to

the pullback for four years, you know I will

latch on to something in a certain issue or a

certain series, and I just can't let it go. And

I'm sorry, Renette's giant friggin' clock head,

I cannot let go. That just seems out of place

to me, but her clock hat, her headdress, it's

just the only thing so far out of this series

that I'm gonna bitch about the other three issues

after this. He's always looked bizarre. yeah

so the cool thing here is we start with them

and then we go to the year 2000 for bebop and

rocksteady I don't want to blow out your microphone

whenever somebody says the year 2000 I want to

do the Conan O 'Brien thing but I'm not gonna

do that if it's going through your head listeners

you're welcome yes and all four of them both

Human Bebop and Rocksteady and Mutant Bebop and

Rocksteady are at a rock concert. They're performing

at a rock concert. I love the colors on this

page, though. Yeah, it's a brilliant color. Is

Rod on colors or is it the individual artists

this time? No, it's, uh, let's see. The, uh,

the team is Story by Ben Bates and Dustin Weaver,

Script by Dustin Weaver, Art... Ben Bates pages

1 to 18 and 20. No, pages 1 and then 18 to 20.

Giannis Milgiannis is pages 2, 3, 14 to 17. Sophie

is on pages 4 to 13. Colors are done by Bill

Crabtree and Sophie Campbell on pages 4 to 13.

And then letters are done by Sean. And obviously,

Bobby does the editing. So no, it is not Rhonda

on this series. I don't know if she's gonna be

on the series at all. Probably one of the only

times, one of the few times that she's not on

something. But the colors and this giant one

-page splash of the rock concert with Bebop and

Rocksteady is just amazing. I like the turtles

going back in time and I like how the story is

set up, but... I'm hoping by issue three, four,

and five, they start to focus more on bebop and

rocksteady, because I'm sorry, we get the first

page starting with Turtles and Renette, then

we go to the rock concert, and then we get two

pages of bebop and rocksteady, and then it goes

back to, back in time when they're, you know,

back in the crustaceous era, or wherever the

hell they are, I don't remember where they, they're

back in the past. But it's like, oh god, I want

more bebop and rocksteady now, damn it, now.

The funny thing is about going back in time to

this one period is we run into this new little

I People are gonna kill me for saying this but

I don't care this new little charizard character

Come on the orange dude looks just like charizard

a little bit We run into him we run into Savanti

with bebop and rocksteady and Bebop with dreads.

Just looks weird. It's a very logical conclusion,

I think, to his character that eventually, especially

going back in the past where there was no soap,

that he'd probably roll those into dreads. Yeah,

probably. So we get this page, and we get this

little now. I thought they were... Almost the

same size or that the orange dude was bigger

than pepperoni, but he's apparently smaller than

pepperoni because we run into pepperoni again,

and I just My heart just sunk cuz I'm like oh,

it's pepperoni son. You know Raph's gonna have

an emotional breakdown So the turtles end up

back in the past here Raph reunites with pepperoni,

and I thought this was so cool Because I remember

when we originally talked about, was it? Yeah,

it was Turtles and Thorn. Yeah. Yeah, when we

first met Pepperoni. I remember when we reviewed

that, I was like, oh, cool. Raph kinda has a

pet now. Maybe he'll still be his angry self,

but at least we can see a little bit more emotion

to him. Pepperoni is I again I hate to say this

because essentially it would make raff ash, but

pepperoni is essentially his version of Pikachu

So we're so we're in the past here and a future

a Secondary future Reynette pops in now. What

do you think of this design that well? That's

the one that matches the the dead Reynette yeah

in the museum This is much cooler. I think this

is less influenced by the old Mirage comics to

a degree. In fact, there's something almost Jack

Kirby -esque about that headgear. So that's kind

of a neat, you know, design, new eternals, what's

it called, new gods, eternals looking kind of

thing. Like if Renette looked like this all the

time, I'd be okay with that. Yeah. Yeah, I would

be too. So as we go along here old Renette shows

up to stop Savanti. Sadly that doesn't really

work out for her. Like we all know as we know.

Yes. We then go down the drain pipes to get to

the Mushroom Kingdom. Everybody kind of gets

separated and moved around and... I was so happy,

and then they had Dustin Weaver and Ben Bates.

You guys had to go and crush me. Raph and Pepperoni

get separated in the tubes. Come on, guys! Come

on! That's not fair. Yeah, there's people separating.

There's tubes turning around back on themselves.

Something's going to happen. Something is happening

in those panels, and we're not going to know

about it until later. So what I love about this

issue specifically is our present Bebop and Rocksteady,

which is the future Bebop and Rocksteady to the

Bebop and Rocksteady that's in the past if that

makes any sense. How they're basically remembering

all this stuff and telling them, did you guys

not watch Back to the Future? Like seriously?

I mean come on! But I just, I love... I love

this because what Ben and Dustin are doing with

this part of the story is they are giving us

backstory for the mutants that we know and love

before they got mutated. And they're showing

it in a way that I think is really cool, basically

saying, hey, yeah, that already happened to us.

We'll move past it because we're still buds now

and all this and all that. So, what did you think

of the Bebop and Rocksteady pages here? Well,

it's interesting to note that the purple car

that young Bebop has purchased and has been restoring

is the foot cruiser toy from the old Playmates

line. I thought that was kind of an e -thing.

And there's a, yeah, I'm going to put a big gun

turret on the back. Like, yeah, it had a big

gun turret on the back. That was neat. Have we

seen the car yet in the tunnels? Has it showed

up there in the previous tunnels? No, this is

the first time we see the car. I thought they

teased it. Like it was going by the other direction

or something. No, what they do is it comes later

as these just progress. They basically Flashpoint

it. They basically have a time double. You've

seen Flash Season 2, right? Yep, just finished

a few days ago. So yeah, there ends up being

two versions of the cars, two versions of those

characters, and one goes off, and the other one

goes off, and now it's showing them in the time

tunnel, kind of doing weird, silly things, because

didn't they, like... point this yeah because

you run into two versions of them two separate

yeah back to 2016 yeah there's there's two cars

with four mutants there's two bebops two wrecked

rock studies that are mutants not just the humans

and the two bebops end up basically playing you

know fencing lessons with each other with the

receptors and then this is what creates the the

the switch there um and shit just explodes folks

it's the best way i could put it is shit just

explodes because the point of this and i'm i'm

we're spoiling stuff but we're not i'm not trying

to spoil everything but it's one of those things

where Part of the story is Renette tells the

turtles that it's not just time. It's other dimensions.

It's transdimensional energy. It's this it's

that and and You know, like we said last episode,

you know these turtles can be you know Who that

Renette saw and you guys are who I saw but I

haven't met you guys both It's this whole like

I said time travel gives people headaches folks

I was So we got one of the cars coming out of

the time thing and to the point where we have

Renette our Renette and the turtles the ones

that we know and The car I think crashes and

goes boom So this happened to the bebop and rocksteady

that we know well no When they were the tunnels

Yeah, it would be it have to be because if the

car gets wrecked it can't go back in time and

be next to the other one So this is a bebop and

rocksteady that have seen stuff that we haven't

seen yet right and What I love is is earlier

in the issue Renette has this weird saying gosh

a Rooney's and it ends on Raph, of all people,

saying, gosh -a -roonies. I love where this series

is going, because I don't know where it's going.

And this car wreck here, between the four, well,

eight, bebops and rock steadies, there are people

who are pinned under the car, trapped, people

who are looking unconscious, and they're all

swapping out. with each other and actually now

that I'm looking very closely there's two mutant

bebops and two mutant rock steadies and there's

like yeah there's six of them in that car now

going back into the time tunnel oh man yeah time

travel is just it's confusing as all hell It'll

make sense by the end. Yeah, I love this issue.

I thought this issue was a damn good continuation

from last time with number one. I am excited

to see what happens next. I mean, you know, we

talk about the cliffhanger -y type stuff with

turtles and IDW never ceases to amaze on some

of these cliffhangers because it's like... What

just happened? I mean, I think Raph got it right.

Gosh -a -roonies. Like seriously, what's gonna

happen next week or the week after? I have no

idea. It's like holy crap What did you think

overall of issue two? This issue moved incredibly

fast and I think a lot of seeds got Hmm, pardon

me got planted and I'm ecstatic to see what's

going to happen I think I think you're right

that after this next issue, we're gonna find

out where they went and that's That's kind of

gonna be where the next few issues go because

you know, oh, it's the seeds It's the seeds and

I see them. I see the the the machinations of

the IDW team I think it's gonna get really good

And of course, you got that master puppeteer

Bobby Kernel on all the strings. Oh, Lord. Yeah,

for me, issue two was epic and amazing and awesome.

It fulfilled my need for story that... I've been

wanting since we first saw these guys way back

when and you know when they first debuted with

you know showing us their past and and then just

you know having them just do what they do and

screw every not necessarily screw everything

up but just screw stuff up to the point where

holy crap it ends on a giant explosion Please

tell me no one let Michael Bay into the IDW offices.

I don't think they're smart enough not to do

that But yeah, I mean so far two issues in I

there's nothing I Okay outside of the clock thing

with Renette's design, but that's just that's

nitpicking. I know Story wise and character wise

with bebop and rocksteady specifically. There's

nothing that I don't like about this series so

far yeah there's nothing i can outwardly complain

about it's it's gonna be really neat i almost

think we should get through all five issues and

then go reread them and rerecord like and see

it's double of ourselves and and see all the

things that we missed but oh But yeah, I mean

bebop and rocksteady destroy everything number

two it's out now because we the way I The reason

why we spoiled some of this stuff folks is the

way I'm releasing these is a week after the initial

initial release of each issue So essentially

you're getting the episode a week late So that

way we can still sit here and spoil stuff without

having the need to sit around and say oh Well

that happened that happened that happened. You'll

have to read it yourself. So Just absolutely

And poor pepperoni, where did that's at this

point? That's the only question I have where

the pepperoni go He'll come back if he's probably

just waiting in the turtle lair he's probably

just ready to go I EW people tugging at the heartstrings

Just Alright folks, we've got several things

going on here at the pull bag. We've got a special
