About this Episode

Mike and Joe dig into the first issue of IDW's time-traveling miniseries featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bebop, and Rocksteady. The episode covers the setup involving Renet, the Time Scepter, and the shocking reveal that Bebop and Rocksteady encounter their own human selves in the year 2000. They discuss the multiple artists on the book, the variety of variant covers, and what makes this premise so compelling as a departure for these characters.

Hi, this is Bobby Kernow, Chief Turtle Editor

at IDW Publishing, and you are going to have

a shell of a good time inside the pull bags.

Welcome to The Pull Bags, back issue classics.

Join us as we talk about comics from yesteryear,

from DC, Marvel, and more. So open your ears

to hear our discussion. The older continuity

as the back issue classics are also what's in

the pool bag Hello and welcome to the pull bag

this is back issue classics episode 58 this is

one of five episodes that's going to be coming

because why do this all at once when For June,

IDW is destroying everything. For all five weeks

in June, we have got TMNT, Bebop, and Rocksteady

destroy everything. This is issue number one.

Now, I remember when I first saw the solicits

for this a few months ago, I immediately messaged

you on Facebook and I'm like, look, stop everything.

Look! There is a small part of me that still

feels uh I don't know initially when you mentioned

bebop and rocksteady I think uh it's those guys

from the cartoon it's gonna be terrible but then

you remember that IDW has done amazing things

with everything they've touched but then again

with rocksteady and bebop making them uh interesting

characters characters that are important to the

story and I think most importantly really formidable

opponents in in their clutziness and their dim

-wittedness these guys are just nearly unstoppable

in the IDW comic and you know power level in

comic books does doesn't really affect me it's

like who'd win in a fight Goku or Superman world

power level 9000 block like you know okay it's

just a comic book they can write it however they

want but they do a really good job of making

these guys seem viscerally unstoppable and so

it's It's their fun characters, their funny characters,

and there's way more potential there. So I kind

of wake up and realize, oh my god, this is actually

going to be awesome. Yes. There are three main

covers, and then there are eight variant covers.

Way too many. Well, it's what IDW does. I mean...

Really it's fine. It's not that big of a deal.

I tell you though I'm really if I was still because

I've pretty much gone all digital at this point

if I was still collecting single issues for any

of the turtles stuff for any of the turtles issues

any of them doesn't matter which ones I would

want all the blind box stuff those action figure

replica ones Yeah, and I mean, I wouldn't even

really need to have like okay they started doing

blind box at issue 50 issue 50 was shredder issue

52 is leo aprilin leo for some oh vintage edition

of 100 okay issue 55 was mikey of 600 and mikey

of 100 and then splinter and then this issue

is bebop and rocksteady and then it's got uh

six more slots for whatever the next one is but

I just I love those those action figure colors

it's just so cool because it's your state it's

your classic turtle packaging but it's you know

catered to whatever issue or whatever character

is from the comic which is really cool yeah when

I first heard about this I'm like Bebop and rocks

did he destroy everything and I looked at the

solicitation document for June 2016 and I'm just

starting read I'm like, oh my god. Oh my god,

holy No way Such disbelief So this is issue number

one of five of bebop and rocks did he destroy

everything? Do you have a favorite cover out

of oh Well, I've looked at it two or three times

now and I keep thinking that I've seen them all,

but then there's a I notice a new one in the

list here. I think I like the traditional one.

I think that's I think that's Ben Bates on the

regular note to sub cover the sub cover. I think

is my general favorite. You know, it's the one

I'm going to be able to get a hold of the one

that I'm not going to be able to get a hold of

that I enjoy. Oh, it's another retailer incentive.

Oh, I don't recognize the art. It's got Pigeon

Pete with it. Yeah, that's the Pigeon Pete cover

with Bebop and Rocksteady. That's convention

-exclusive art, but you don't recognize the art.

I can't put the name to it. No, I recognize the

art. It's Mateus. It's Mateus Santaluca. Okay,

yeah, that's what's gonna happen. Yeah, that's

a page from a previous issue. Cause that was

one of the cliffhangers. Oh, that's right. Look,

I found, look who I found. I found two guys to

join the club. That's right. I remember that.

Um, for me, I would, if I didn't have like, if

I wasn't going to sit here and choose the blind

box ones, the two action figure ones, the one

that I absolutely love is the, um, the regular,

uh, okay. So The regular cover is done by Nick

Petara. The retail incentive cover is by Eastman.

And then the sub cover is done by Dustin Weaver.

The Anastasia's exclusive is done by Alex Kotkin.

The blind box is done by Robert Atkins, both

of them. The one that I love out of this is the

double Midnight exclusive art by Ben Bishop.

It's Bebop and Rocksteady basically fist bumping

each other, walking off into the sunset with

nothing but whatever's strapped to their backs.

I absolutely love that. Poor captured turtles.

Yeah. I think, you know, I don't usually get

excited for a lot of the covers, but the Rocksteady

Smashing the Pizzas by Corey Smith, nerd block

exclusive is nice. Think ultimately though one

of the more clever and well -drawn ones out of

that is the heroes and fantasies exclusive by

Tim Lynn the the back to the future send up Where

instead of looking at the watch they're holding

this time scepter and the turtles are climbing

down the clock tower That's that's kind of nice

Yeah, I wonder Now, what convention is coming

up? Well, San Diego's coming. That's next month.

So, yeah. But yeah, I mean, all these covers,

I mean, all of them are really, really awesome.

And let me tell you what's gonna happen. Nobody

knows about this except the people that have

been reading the book and reading the solicits.

This is gonna hit. It's gonna be amazing. These

covers are going to disappear and skyrocket in

value. Oh, yeah. you'll be able to get a hold

of them for about a week and a half, and then

they're gonna be going. Yeah. Absolutely. All

right. Bebop and Rocksteady. Destroy everything,

number one. Starts off in a way I never thought

a current IDW title would start off. And I know

you're gonna love this, because it's just so

awesome. Before we get too far into it, I should

go over the creative on this really quick before

I forget. Ben Bates and Dustin Weaver are on

story. Script was done by Dustin Weaver. Art

is done by Sophie Campbell, pages 1 to 3. Dustin

Weaver, pages 4, 4 and 5, and 11 to 14. Ben Bates

is on 6 to 10, 15 to 18, and Giannis, I can't

even pronounce the name, is pages 19 to 20. Yeah,

I can't even um Sorry Sorry Yes, generally I

don't know transformers when I was reading the

IDW transformers comics. They did this a lot

They would have multiple artists on multiple

pages I don't normally like that because it's

too jarring of a change for me, but when I read

through this the first time It was fine. I did.

One, I didn't notice the art changes. Um, but

I've also kind of think, I think I accept it

because they're, they're flashing back to things

from turtles and time or other parts of the turtles.

Not so much of this exactly, but, um, so when

I see it, it doesn't look foreign to me. It doesn't

look, cause I'm familiar with it and I know they

can tell me when I'm, when it's taking place.

For instance, our, our first page. done in black

and white except for the color red. And Leonardo's

got the red headband later in these first couple

of pages. The rest of the turtles have red headbands.

It's a flashback, flash forward. We don't know

how they got into this situation. But since it

happened in the past, references turtles in time

and the dinosaur 65 million years ago, age of

the dinosaurs, it's Sophie Campbell. And I'm

looking at this and I noticed it before I had

to go up and see who did it. It's like, wait,

that's Sophie Campbell's turtles. Like, hey,

there they go. And this looks suspiciously reminiscent

of... black and white mirage duo shade just the

two different tones of gray white and black and

then your splashes of color where things are

happening but really fun to see yeah the only

color in the black and white here is Leo's red

bandana and then and then you go to the next

page and there's a little bit of color on the

action with the kazooie or whatever that's supposed

to be up there at the top right We then break

into full color and we have a narrator, which

usually in the TMNT books, I can tell the narration

by the color of the background. And this is blue,

but it doesn't like in my head when I was reading

it, it doesn't sound like Leo. It sounds more

like Donnie. I think it's Donnie. And I want

to read over it again here just to make sure

that is. And looking at it now, it looks gray.

So yeah, but it's a grayish Jewish. Yeah, blue.

It looks blue when it's on top of the white on

the following page, but So so that we begin this

comic it looks like Leo's fighting this bone

clad evil villain your luck has run out surrender

or die and he chooses neither and jumps off and

Lightning strikes and then we kind of have a

small dream cycle psycho Sequence we're not sure

what's going on and that's when the narration

starts So we've apparently flashed to somewhere

near the end of this book and end of the series

I imagine and don't know what's going on mmm,

but I I I can't wait for you to tell me when

you actually get the issue or well We're recording

this a week before the podcast will be out folks

So as of this recording the issue number one

has not come out yet But we will be releasing

this a week after it releases. I can't wait for

you to tell me on Facebook how this opening two

-page splash thing with the title would be about

rocksteady on the left destroying how that looks

in the actual physical comic. Oh yeah, because

it's a splash page that's not put together here.

It usually doesn't happen on these. Usually it

would be side to side, so that's kind of interesting.

So one thing I was not explained the way that

I read the solicits and all that the way I understood

this it was basically Bebop and Rock City's adventure

I was not Expecting the turtles to even I mean

I was expecting them to be in it because it's

TMNT book But I wasn't expecting them to be in

it in the capacity that they are And I think

it's a really cool thing that they use the turtles

to set up the eventual Time travel that bebop

and rocksteady do I think I think it's gonna

get more Bebop and rocksteady centric once they

start leaping through time I kind of I kind of

don't want the turtles to follow with them Somebody

in the past is going to have to be the protagonist

to stop them from completely screwing up everything

and destroying everything But I don't know If

the turtles do go back, you know, I'll enjoy

the ride. I'll love it. The riding will be fantastic.

And I won't even remember saying this, but I

kind of hope the turtles are in the background

and that we really get to spend some time with

Rocksteady and Bebop. It'd be a good opportunity

to bring in new protagonists that maybe can show

up later in the series. Suggie or Jimbo, who

knows? Yeah, that won't that officially won't

happen. It breaks my heart. I know, I know. So

they go into the museum in the present day and

They're what are they looking for here there?

Let's see, what's he doing? Donnie, why don't

you see the new exhibit? Oh, that's right the

new exhibit and then we get to the next page

and We see two very familiar giant skeletons

I Was shocked when I saw this I'm like well,

we know they're gonna die eventually Yeah Yeah,

I Love it. I think it's Donnie's line recognized.

He got these guys that isn't Bebop and Rocksteady,

but that's impossible, right? Oh This is right.

Yeah, so We then go to Bebop and Rocksteady who

are off God knows where working for God knows

what gang. They're in Rio of all places. They're

in Rio de Janeiro of all places. And it's seeming

to be that they're replaying the origin of them

as far as them getting kicked out of a gang or

whatever, except this time... they're not getting

kicked out they're gonna get killed it's this

it's their lot in life to join up and then to

screw up and then to get kicked out uh nowadays

though as tough as they are that probably doesn't

go as well for the people kicking them out as

it used to this is just one of my one of the

things that happens that makes them so viscerally

powerful uh they're they were apparently captured

as they're strapped up with giant shipping chains.

They're on a shipping container boat and they're

coming out of this wrecked shipping containers

chained up to a gigantic ship anchor and they're

dragging it by, you know, they were chained to

it and now they're dragging it. You can't do

this to us. It was an accident. And they're trying

to talk this guy into forgiving them. Meanwhile,

they're wrecking everything behind them. Yes.

So cool. See, when I picture the title, Bebop

and Rocksteady destroy everything, I just figure

from go it's gonna be them destroying everything.

And it's not even, which is great, it's so great

that they're just unintentionally, they're basically

trying to free themselves in the process, they

are destroying the entire ship. Bebop and Rocksteady

accidentally destroy everything. Accidentally,

but on purpose So as we continue in this scene

we've got this this gang leader guy who Who basically

wants to kill them now? What do you think of

the art on these pages here? Oh, it's good stuff.

It's good stuff It's not well It's not what we

usually see we don't get to see human characters

with robot bodyguards and we don't get to see

a lot of Bebop and Rocksteady, but you know it's

Ben Bates doing what he does with those two guys

It's in the IDW series, it's the first time that

I've seen Rocksteady drawn with that The rhino

folds of skin over the shoulders and wrists and

fingers. And I think that's a really neat touch.

And when I saw that, that immediately influenced

how I draw my rock steadies now. I hope that's

not stealing, but it's, it was, it was, it's

important. I mean, you look at that and like,

yeah, he looks like he's got rhino skin. So.

Imitation is the finest form of flattery, right?

Yes, yes. He taught me something. That's sort

of it. I'm not happy in his pictures, but he

taught me something. It's not like you're stealing

his style. Oh, no, no. Mine is nowhere near as

good. So they're wrecking this ship. The boss's

name is Regatron. He's offended that they're

using this music -themed nickname on him. He's

like, I thought that was cool. No, it's not cool

to use music types as nicknames. And he's got

these Robots, I guess they're like military robots

done up in this kind of bizarre Japanese style

and Everything's destroyed. They shoot him with

a rocket rocks to D &B pop more rampage and yes

indeed Destroy everything and then they're walking

the back streets dang it and kicking rocks on

the street We did it again. Nobody loves us And

I like the the panel there as they're about it

looks like they're about to enter a bar and the

photo with Rocksteady there just bullet holes

blood and and he's just happy as all it can be

because he is no no no walking around It looks

like he has a pac -man tattoo. That's what I

was gonna say, you stole my line I was gonna

say, he's got a pac -man on his chest. Yes, it's

on the next panel, too Yeah, I hope that becomes

like universally canon now We'll have to look

very carefully at the movie and see if that's

there Yeah, yeah the movie will have come out

by the time you all here But yeah by the time

this releases the second movie TMNT out of the

shadows will have already been out by the time

this one releases so we go back to the museum

and we see some sort of mummy with a jewel in

her chest and It is revealed that it that is

Renette's dead body Were you expecting that?

Uh, no It's definitely not what I thought when

when it was happening and then yep They touch

the turtles accidentally activate this jewel

that she's kind of holding near her chest and

it Activates the teleporter and she just falls

out of it when she wasn't expecting to get sucked

into it And this is this is where it starts to

get a little bizarre for me because In the first

time we met the turtles she had already met them,

but they had no clue who she was Oh, this is

the first time you met me here She's had several

more adventures with them they but they have

had an adventure with her that she hasn't had

with them yet and They also kind of and I don't

remember where the line is in all this text.

That's in front of me, but they kind of reference

that the adventure that she remembers doesn't

ever happen to these turtles, but it happens

to the Mirage turtles. So there's some weird

parallel stuff going on in here, or it's just

something that they haven't explained in the

book yet. This got really bizarre and I started

to kind of lose what was going on. But the point

to this scene is that Renette needed the turtles

help when she died she gave them this jewel and

it would only activate with them because the

scientists and the archaeologists have had their

hands all over it but when the turtles touch

it she's there she knows what she needs to do

to help them or send them off on the right direction

to either prevent this or maybe that's destined

to happen and this is just her part in it now.

You know, ever since we've had the whole time

travel thing, since we had Paul Alar's Turtles

in Time, and now with this, alls I can ever think

of is... And I know everyone hates the movie,

I'm sorry. Heartbreak? It's not as bad as the

2014 movie, but Turtles in Time. Yeah, Turtles

in Time. Alls I can think of is, ooh, hockey!

Hockey! because you look at Renette's design

here when she shows up and she's got the scepter

which is essentially supposed to be it's supposed

to somewhat resemble the time scepter from turtles

3 i think but it doesn't really resemble it all

that much but it's still cool to see it i still

like it yeah and i think in some panels it looks

more like it and some panels it looks less like

it but it's definitely supposed to be that time

scepter yeah The only thing I don't like about

Renette, because this is the first time I remember.

I mean, I know she was in the 2014 annual two

years ago, but this is really the first time

I'm remembering seeing her. The only thing I

don't like about her costume is the giant clock

on her head. She always looked goofy all the

way in the old Mirage series. It's part of the

shtick, I think. I just don't know. Yeah, but

she had talks like her valley girl self and she's

definitely a teenager. We just really need to

see the turtles hanging out with other Teenagers,

you know April and Casey are younger, but no

She's out there like they are and so there's

a neat camaraderie that happens with her that

doesn't happen with April or Casey in this series

Yeah, and then and then we get the reveal when

she says this mummy is me. This is my dead body

I wonder how long it will be before I die Hopefully

don't brown teach you anything you're not supposed

to ask that kind of stuff And What does Mikey

say Mikey says something And she'll leave that

beacon for us to find and summon a younger version

of herself? That's exactly right, Mikey. Hey,

don't look so surprised. I'm not a total idiot,

you know. I'm loving the art on this. It's just

so good. But again, I understand why these scenes

are here, because they're here to set up what

is going to be coming later, but... like this

whole middle section I'm like where's Bebop and

Rocksteady where are they come on and we eventually

do get to them because basically Renette says

that she can with her time scepter she can track

her other self or other time scepters And she

then tracks it, and we run back into Bebop and

Rockste, who have an older version of the Time

Scepter, which looks... I don't even know what

the hell that looks like. Looks like somebody

crossed a PKE meter with the flux capacitor.

Yeah, it's got this glowing sphere in the middle

and then these plates of... Metal that are suspended

around it. They're apparently floating around

it kind of that's kind of a neat thing that you

couldn't ever really build Yeah, but they they

have this scepter and I don't how do how did

they come across that they just find it in the

corner? Let me see here Let's see they fine.

Let's see. They're sitting Hiring it is See,

yeah, see that's the spirit. Uh -huh. Got it.

It's like they just took it off this dude that

wanted to join their gang before Yeah Yeah, we're

the devil guy here we come. Oh, I know who the

devil guy is It's from the beginning of the comic

Yeah, it's simultaneous gave it to him Yeah,

that's right So he knew so so now that they have

this scepter and it's like activating because

they're touching it the portal opens because

Renette's hunting them and out pops Renette and

the turtles in Rio de Janeiro. Oh, see, I thought

Bebop and Rocksteady popped out into the museum.

Nope, they're in Rio. Yeah, there's... I had

to page ahead. I saw the bright light. I didn't

realize that it was somebody popping out. I thought

it was them jumping through it to go somewhere.

But yeah, basically... Proxy and Bebop bring

them to Rio. A fight ensues. Bebop holds Raph

upside down. That's hilarious. I love how huge

they are. It looks so cool. I love this art.

It's so amazing. Oh, that dark blue panel with

a lot of black. Love it. Let's see. Well, make

turtle soup out of you and then serve it. in

your skulls to each other. Just the four of them.

I know Mikey's the only one that looks really

really scared. So we have this giant battle and

again the colors so well done. Absolutely love

it. We get to So we have the fight with the turtles

and and bebop and rocksteady and it ends abruptly

as they somehow accidentally activate their own

scepter and They disappear right and the coolest

thing from oh See, I thought it was from everybody,

but I think it's just from Leo. It's it looks

like it's supposed to be from all of them So

they go back in time to New York City and They

I was this is what I was not expecting this is

what I absolutely love folks Spoilers if you

don't want to be spoiled on the end of this issue

you better fast forward about five minutes or

so So they jump back in time. They're in New

York On the very last panel you have this giant

thing at the top right -hand corner. What the...

I'll give you wimps to the count of seven to

get out. And, you know, Roxie, do you see what

I'm seeing? Bebop, how does that thing know my

name? New York City, in the year 2000, did you

think they were going back to the age of the

dinosaurs? dudes if are only so simple they basically

the mutant versions of bebop and rocks did he

run into their human cell and they they run into

much younger versions of them because it's 2016

in the book or 15 in the book and so this is

many years before they're mutated this is 15

years before wow first issue have no problem

With the fact that you have multiple artists,

it is not jarring at all. In fact, I think it

makes it almost better that you have various

artists on various pages. Love the fact that

Sophie opens the book. I think that's great right

there. Still love Ben Bates's style. I will never

not like Ben's stuff. As far as the story goes,

bring on issue 2 already. two weeks away from

me, but yeah. It's amazing that they got this

done and I think the only thing that managed

to make it get done is the bouncing around of

the artists. One guy, one person's not working

on the whole book. Each of them only worked on

so many pages over the course of the month so

they could get it all out. I did not expect to

like this, but I just, I just need to like, we've

been doing this, you know, kind of apprehensive

to bebop and rock steady. And, and I have no

reason to be, I have no reason to be apprehensive

with anything that IDW does with my turtles.

It's just, it's, it's always been good. Yeah.

I mean, what I'm wondering is how does this fit

into Where we left them in 50, I mean Essentially,

I guess they went to Rio after Their defeat in

50 and they probably got booted out of many different

places a lot of times. Yeah Yeah, so next month

we've got We got bebop and rocks. They destroy

everything number two Or not next month next

week. I should say or the week you know whatever

um and we've got let me see here what is so i'm

trying to that's godzilla yeah so so yeah bebop

and rocksteady destroy everything i love the

first issue i think they're consistently writing

these guys very well um the fact that that they've

essentially basically put Bebop and Rocksteady

back in their pockets from 50 until they basically

haven't been around 51 to 58. Obviously that

was intentional on IDW's part for eventually

doing this series. What I wanna know and what

I'm gonna have to ask Bobby at some point, I

don't know when we'll have him back on, probably

whenever the next new story arc starts or whenever

it is. I think the next new story arc starts

either 61 or 62, I forget. But I wanna know how

this came about. Who brought the idea to them?

How did the inception of getting this five -issue

miniseries, was this always planned after the

events of 50? How did this all happen? So that's

really my burning question at this point. But

issue one, absolutely loved it. I'll give it

a four out of five. It's not that I don't want

to give it a five, but... I would have given

a five just for that ending for the mutants meeting

their former younger human selves, but You got

to have some sort of curve for issues two three

four and five Yeah, it's gonna the series is

more than likely going to end on a five for me

I'll say it's a four and a half start Yeah, absolutely.

I absolutely love this so far. It's it's gonna

be epic and awesome and Can't wait to see you

see this the coolest thing though. You take bebop

and Roxie you take characters that They've always

been dimwits no matter what I mean the IDW versions

are a little bit smarter than than mostly other

incarnations, but You take them and then you

take Turtles and Time and you mash them together

and you have Bebop and Rocksteady going through.

How can you not immediately love that no matter

what the story is? Just the whole premise of

Bebop and Rocksteady going through time. It's

something that's never been done with Rocksteady

and Bebop. It's so far out of left field. And

if one of them doesn't end up with a whip tangled

around a sword, I'll be disappointed. Yeah, I

I can't wait I mean this is gonna be awesome

See, I'm not see see when I said earlier. Oh

next month I'm so used to the turtles books being

monthly like most of the miniseries have been

four months at a time or five or six months at

a time Because of how IDW releases their books,

but because this is a five -week special event.

Oh man Team and team book once a week in June.

Hell yeah Plus no, that's August. I was gonna

say plus we got universe but that's not till

August. Yeah And Jonah are gonna have a lot of

work for you guys a lot of work we're gonna have

to do for you guys For the back tail of 2016

because as I said in in the last time we did

one of these episodes We've got The main ongoing

and then we've got the new ongoing for TMNT universe

I think what we're probably gonna end up doing

is we're we're gonna take uh Issue whatever number

like by august. It'll be what 61. I think this

one's 15. I don't even know This month's 15.

Well, I buy them and read them. I don't know

Yeah, I don't remember. Uh, these either 60 or

61 by June, by August, what we'll probably start

doing is we'll just do two in one episode. We'll

do the regular ongoing and we'll do universe.

That way we won't have to have two separate episodes

for single issues. So, who knows? But yeah, no,

folks, it's, yeah, bring on destroy everything.

Jeez, bring on destroy everything. You got anything
