About this Episode

Mike and Nicole dive into IDW's Hot Damn #3 by Ryan Ferrier and Valentin Ramon. Following a two-month gap since the previous issue, they break down Teddy's journey through hell as he encounters the mysterious Imogen, discovers a guidebook that might hold the key to his escape, and faces unexpected consequences. They discuss the series' unique panel layouts, the humorous heaven scenes with God, and the shocking cliffhanger ending that sets up the final two issues.

65 and I know everyone's Tired of Joe and I talking

turtles and Bopping and rocking with bebop and

rocksteady. So that's over because that was the

month of June We're now in July and it is hot

as hell. So we're gonna go back to hell It feels

like forever since we were Yes Hot damn number

three from IDW publishing the regular cover and

subscription cover were both done by Valentine

Ramon Me personally, it's the Teletubbies It's

regular cover just because it's the damn Teletubbies

is like, oh my god. No, they didn't What about

you? I do love the Teletubbies, but I really

like the rose one and the stinky little worm

that comes off of it just because Okay, because

this goes with another series I'm a huge fan

of the Dark Tower series and a rose has a major

thing to do with it and the rose is kind of decorated

like one of the illustrations in the Dark Tower

series in the mmm, and so it's just like It's

nostalgia for me Alls I can think of, and I know

this has nothing to do with it, but alls I can

think of when you mention Rose and different

meanings and everything else, alls I can think

of is that friggin' Columbo show where the dog

had the command, Rosebud. Oh, girl. I don't think

I've ever watched an episode of Columbo. Really?

That's a shame. I remember seeing it back in

the day, but I don't think I could literally...

Say I've watched it mm -hmm So Yeah, okay, so

so far the angel Adriel has pieced out of heaven

breaking the treaty between Satan and God. Meanwhile,

in hell, following their cruel punishment, Teddy

and his demon sponsor, Costello, get properly

turned up and Teddy is soon sobered by the discovery

of a guidebook that may hold the key to his possible

atonement or escape. Okay, so when I realized

this was going to be an escape issue, we haven't

gotten to it yet, folks, but I swear to God.

Ryan Ferrier, dude, you were must have been writing

this issue and kennel block blues at the same

damn time And because I hadn't seen this in so

long I hadn't read that it's been so long since

we did the first two issues You know, I'm totally

lost in this opening until he realized it was

a different character. It was a new set of characters

in these first few pages. Well, no, that's his

wife right there. No, it's not. The girl? That

is his wife. Oh, OK. Because remember after Teddy

died, she changed herself. She keeps on wearing

this Jesus look. Yeah, that's his wife. OK, I

thought that ended up being the The chick at

the end there. No, no, no. That's a totally different

chick. So the first panel, because I zoomed in

on this, because we're doing this via the IDW

server review copy thing, sign says, free hugs.

In the news, nothing to report. Everything is

fine. Life is beautiful. Oh boy. We get to...

Teddy and He's like I said he and Costello are

at this this place and whatever else and he sees

this woman He's like whoa who is that? And see

that's why oh she's got a skull on her. She's

okay. No see I thought she had the god thing

on her shirt That's why I thought it was the

same for like a new kid Yeah, yeah, I'm colorblind

when it comes to Harrison Let's not no I am NOT

getting into a hair debate. This is not This

isn't in the holograms Let's not even go there

So as we go along We get the giant pink purple

limo coming up and Apparently, what's her name?

Astoroth shows up and basically says that Teddy

is wanted by the devil. She basically just throws

Costello just to the side, essentially. They

go back and this is apparently some sort of uprising.

I just, I get so lost in the middle of this issue.

Okay, so what's happening, Adriel, she's come

down to earth, so it's bringing the second coming.

So now what's going to happen, because now if

you know your biblical stuff, the devil's going

to be set loose before this. Right around the

same time as the second coming so he is doing

his part of the Old Testament prophecy So I guess

Ryan saw dogma a lot Dogmas awesome you sent

a shit demon after us. What the hell? Okay This

episode of The Pullback is brought to you by

Teddy Grahams. We'll be back after this 1980s

commercial. Exploding with taste in honey, cinnamon,

and chocolate. Just want to eat those teddy bears

and a piece of food. Ooh. Technical difficulties.

Let's move on, shall we? Thank you, Joker. Yes,

technical difficulties. Always technical difficulties.

These next - They happen. Yeah. Let's not even

talk. Let's talk about it as if it didn't happen

and not talk about it. Oh, shit. I'm going to

hell, folks. Oh, hell doesn't want you after

that, what you just did. People won't know, though.

People will not know. Such a major inside joke

now. Yeah, pretty much. So... These next two

pages at the Church of the Devil they have a

bunch of pentagrams all over the place They look

like poker chips to me At first what I because

I'm reading this on my Kindle So it's what the

seven inches and I guess I thought they were

gemstones because it's yes small on my Kindle

like oh no, okay So this is part of the uprising

and Teddy keeps seeing the girl and apparently

she can speak demon or whatever the hell the

name of the language is. Yeah, there you go,

that. And he had found this guidebook thing so

that's going to be part of the story later. We

go to heaven. What are my favorite things about

this rally that Satan... It's the statue of Kurt

Cobain. That's just so horrible. I guess Ryan's

not going to be giving us all apologies then.

I'm like what? I'm like, okay, get it The song

thank you. I know it took me a second like what

are you talking about? All right, so we get to

we go up to heaven and I honestly have more fun

Reading the God stuff in the heaven stuff when

I do the hell stuff sometimes in this No, I do

I enjoy it all but like cuz I never know how

this particular version of God is going to Basically

just steals her phone. Oh, I mean he's God he's

I just like okay, so God takes the phone away

from It's just because it's I don't I don't get

the whole phone things yet for some reason I

got confused with that in the last issue, but

I just think it's funny He it's she's like just

see my pictures. I've seen your pictures. Don't

swipe. I've seen whatever you have in here. I'm

God And it's one of those things where She says

hey, don't swipe my photos first thing. I thought

of is swiper no sweat I've got a senior photo

zone like that. Yeah. So, God attempts to call

Satan, and that is the funniest voicemail message

I've ever received. Well, it's kind of like,

uh, yeah, um, hey, what's going on? It's because,

like, he's buddy -buddy with Satan. Like, um,

dude, why aren't you calling me back? What's

going on? I mean, it's so calm. Okay, well, come

back later. Yeah, bye. I love that. It's just

so hilarious. So we finally get to Teddy and

he does eventually meet this girl. Her name is

Imogen. And the first thing is only a few times

I've ever heard that name. One time was the 1999

Freddie Prince Jr., Julia Stiles movie, Down

to You. Julia Stiles' character is that name,

and I'm like, oh, god. Just, ugh. And apparently

she can read, or because she can speak the demon

language thing. He wants her to translate. He

assumes because she can speak it, she can read

it. He wants her to translate the guidebook that

he found. And by far the best, like, sight gag

joke out of this entire issue in the background.

The elephant? No. Oh. Star sucks coffee. Oh,

no, I thought you were talking about the elephant

with the target on its rear and a guy shoving

his head up it. No! That's... No. You know, they're

having a huge party. Personally, that's not how

I would party but each to their own. Oh Yeah,

no, I completely missed the guy That's God I

really ought to insert Rosario Dawson. It's it's

so disgusting yet. I can't look away Alright

so we get Teddy and image and they're gonna go

try to find a way that she he's gonna try to

convince her to Translate this thing we go to

Costello and asked her off and apparently they're

gonna have a love affair Well, I think what I

love about this this specific issue is how all

these panels are laid if you look at Folks if

you flip through the issue just flipping through

it or you're just looking through not reading

the the story I love how all the panels are laid

out in this issue. They're almost like little

mini screenshots of very like It's you got one

whole page like the star sucks page You got one

whole black page in the background and then you've

got red outlined almost windows into hell I just

love the way that this is laid out. It's good

stuff. Yep So we have the scenes with Costello

and Asteroth, which I was not expecting that.

Other demons. It was going to happen eventually.

Yeah, that's true. And we do have this really,

really weird page with Teddy that I don't want

to spoil, but the internal monologue on it is

epic and awesome. where he's reflecting back

on his life as Imogen has finally gotten the

The translation correct, I guess the art on this

one page Mm -hmm. It makes you feel Because um,

the rest of the artwork is very unique, you know,

but this artwork right here Makes everything

on the reflection page or the page before it

the reflection page okay it makes everything

seem real you know like it's I just love that

that panel well you know he's he's looking back

on his life and he's and again I don't want to

spill the content of the story but he's looking

back and and and he's talking to us the readers

saying hey maybe I should you know figure this

out kind of thing and the art it's almost Spatial

or transential or whatever you want to call it

and valentine did an amazing job on it But the

page before that She turned him into lots of

That's a crudely word it It's either lots or

it's tender heart if tender heart was ever pink,

but he never was but still Yeah, that's a lot

so. And we have, so like I said, we go back to

Astaroth and Costello and Costello's like, hey,

let's get the fuck out of here. Let's just go.

I kind of see where she's coming from too. You

know, she's pretty much built this place up.

and she's like yep absolutely so we kind of get

to the closing of the issue here um teddy does

make it out but it's not the way that he wanted

no not at all um I'm trying to see... There's

no... I thought there was gonna be a joke somewhere

in the grill part of the panel here, but there's

not really many inside jokes there at all. He's

essentially turned into Morbius the vampire.

Oh, Morbius is hot. No, this isn't. Teddy Graham,

starring in Lost Boys 2. That's about right.

Okay, so this issue ends on the weirdest thing

ever. She screwed him up somehow. She did something

not right. Well, in all fairness. He's trusting

on a woman that's seen the book once, you know,

the first time she didn't do too well, but he's

just like, just do it anyways. He should have

gave her some more time, even just a couple more

practices, you know, so, oh well. We get the

cover, one of the covers for issue number four

coming next month and looking at, zooming in

on this, I'm like, hey, look, it's a bed of roses.

Yeah, it's it the cover that they're showing

here is Teddy as a corpse here but Zooming in

on it all as I can see is the damn roses and

all as I'm thinking it was a stupid Bon Jovi

song So hot damn number three I don't know. So

they took a... We haven't had an issue in two

months. Issue two came out in May. We're now

in July. This comic released a week ago, because

by the time I published this, issue number three

released July 6th. So it's been two months, and

I don't know what happened. I don't remember.

I'm not sure, not saying anything, I'm just saying

in whatever circumstance happened that they had

to delay it for two months, I kind of fell out

of the story. I like this issue, but it was almost

like I forgot about it until I saw it in the

IDW server stuff. And I think I agree with you.

I mean, when I first was reading this issue,

I was like, oh crap. Where was where were you

from, you know, because it has been a while,

you know But you know with after the first couple

pages I was back into the story So Number three,

how did you feel overall? I I really like this.

I think I like this issue better than the last

one Really? Yeah Because you can see where this

is going and it had a really good cliffhanger

there at the end because I'm wanting to know

And really I want to know what's gonna happen

to Teddy now, you know, yeah I want to know what's

happening with his wife because the last panel

we saw her in it wasn't a good one You know,

we need to talk about that. And so I wasn't going

to yeah people to read this issue Certain things

will spoil and there's certain things Is he gonna

make it is he not you know I mean, what's his,

is he going to go back to, to help and meet up

with Imogen? You know, it's just like, it's got

me a lot of questions. I'm just like, I kind

of want to see another panel of, of God messing

with teenagers cell phones. I really got, I really

didn't get a kick out of that. Like I've got,

I've seen your photos. Because there's the one

thing he's like I made you I'm like that's pretty

much what parents say I've made you I can take

you out. I brought you into this world. I can

take you out. Exactly. The most I can think of

is and I don't know and you know we're you know

we love Ryan stuff and valentine stuff and all

that stuff so it's one of those things where

I'm trying to think in the writing is Ryan trying

to say that because you know God made them and

all that and is he also trying to say as far

as seeing the photos as far as actually using

the phone because the phone looks like an eye

it looks like it's not but it looks like an I

do hickey and it's one of those things where

I'm like is he trying to say that God made Apple

And God made the, well, technically, God made

Steve Jobs, but anyway. I just can't wait for

the part where God and Satan meet up. I'm just

like, that'll be interesting. I wonder if it's

going to come to that. I seriously - I hope so,

because that would be - because it's just like,

God's like this whole tippy, and Satan's like

really laid back. I'm like, nothing to add in

- all my studies when i picture it that way yeah

it's a little crazy folks all right we're gonna

take another quick break we're gonna come back

with uh potentially some new stuff coming out

so we'll be back after this important message

or kryptonradio .com. Obey. Obey. Alright folks

we are back here inside the pullback. We're at

65 episodes for back issue classics and This

has been one hell of a weird episode folks. Oh

boy It's like Isabella in Phineas and Ferb says

ah the magic of digital editing, okay, so I asked

you earlier, and you gave your opinion about

overall on the issue. I liked it. I thought it

was interesting. Once again, with everything

that Ryan writes, I have no idea where in the

Sam hell he's going to take it. What would you

rate number three? Like I said, I like this more

than the last one. I'm going to give this a four

because there was... It kept me going at first

when I finally got into like, okay, where we

at? Like you said cuz of the extra month off,

you know, I Really was excited to see what the

next panel had to bring I'm gonna give it a three

and a half and it's not a bad three and a half,

but I just I had to read through it twice like

the first few pages to figure it out and like

I said at the beginning of the episode I didn't

go back and either re listen to our first two

podcasts or re re re read to catch up the first

two issues because again When I noticed this

coming on the solicits, I was like, oh Oh Okay,

where's this series been cuz it it just felt

like it disappeared And that's why obviously

we had none in a while so hot damn actually came

out last month hot damn number three actually

came out last month it came out in June I thought

it was coming out in July but we do have the

final two issues will be out in July and August

solicitations for them are as follows hot damn

number four of five Ryan on writing valentine

on art Reunited and it feels so gross. Teddy

gives old Satan the slip and attempts to atone

for his past sins. Peeved off, Costella, however,

burns away in hell with a peeved off Satan while

a peeved off God goes old school. Believe the

peeve. So that's gonna come in July. And then

number five is coming in August. Final issue.

It's the end of days and the end of hot damn.

Teddy's fate will be sealed forever for better

or worse. Oh, and also the fate of the entire

world rests in the hands of God. Satan and both

their armies, no big deal. And yeah, they really

suck on bullet points because... Both the bullet

points for four and five say the acclaimed creators

of Dave Welcome you to hell and then number five

says the acclaimed creators of Dave welcome to

hell for the series climax I was really hoping

for a little bit more in the bullet points guys

That was a little meh But but yeah hot damn four

and five Originally I remember when when this

series was first announced and I I messaged you

or I posted on Facebook or else I'm like Oh my

god, we may have to do these as as single episode

reviews and we have so far But I almost want

to wait because it seemed like issue three went

by fast like this was not a long podcast I almost

want to wait until five comes out and do four

and five at once because I will just have to

wait and see what you know, the content for each

comic, but it just felt like it was a really

short podcast this time. I agree. I mean, the

issue was really good. I really enjoyed it, so...

Yup, it was, it was. As far as for what's coming

up in the pull bag here in July, I honestly have

no clue, folks. I wanted to get another I Hate

Fairyland episode done. I wanted to get a couple

of Xenoscope... Red Riding Hood episodes done

Batman Beyond the 2015 series with Dan Juergens

and Bernard Chang, so I'm not sure If any of

that's gonna happen or not But yeah hot damn

number three. It's out now go check it out very

very cool Anything you get coming up didn't you

what have you been doing in your podcasting life

over there? Didn't you record some sort of? Weird

episode for somebody recently Didn't at didn't

gruffy post something on Facebook. Oh, okay.

Well, I gruffy Okay, he does the art of noise

pocket. He does a thing for art of noise, which

is He plays music Right areas music. So I've

given him tons of suggestions and he actually

pulled one of my suggestions and I'm like I give

you the challenge of posting music that most

people don't know about, you know? And he did

a really good job. I have heard two of the songs

out of the 15 he posted. But there's really good

music out there, because Gruff has a really pretty

good... We have a similar taste in music, I'd

say. Well, I pretty much like anything. So he's

got some good songs in there. So yeah, he used

my suggestion. Cool. Cool. I'm trying to work

out a new podcast I'm doing with my dad. What?

Yeah. So we'll see if that gets off the ground

here sometime soon. OK. Okay, we'll just explain.

Have you ever heard of any of my stories about

my dad? No, I haven't. Okay. Well, my dad's a

really cool guy, and I always talk about his

stories and stuff. And Stu from the old oil house

is like, you really need to record your dad because

I want to hear him. So I'm going to start probably

recording my dad off his funny stories. He's

from your neck of the woods, actually. He's back

hills to Billy. He's from Kentucky, just like

you. So he talks like this. No, he does. His

accent's mostly gone, unless he is talking to

his family and his accent comes up. And he does

have a southern accent. Yeah. Because I've lived

here for 23 years, 93 to now. So, but before

that, the first 13 years of my life, I grew up

in Massachusetts. So I remember when I first

got down here, uh, the, my first time ever seeing

a doctor that was not Caucasian, let's say he

was, I don't know, whatever. So, you know, it

was some Dr. Schrecker. So I'm 13 years old.

I come down here to Kentucky to live with my

dad and my then stepmother, who is now my ex

-stepmother. And because I grew up in Massachusetts,

we have, you know, Wicked Pissa and Pak the Kai

and Havid Yad and all that and everything else.

And it's a Boston accent. Everybody's like, oh,

the accent, the accent, you know, just say anything.

It doesn't matter. And I've lived here so long

that my voice now, like the only time it ever

really comes out is when I'm just completely

pissed off. or when I'm around my family. Like,

there are so many times I have slurred so many

F -bombs and S -bombs in the Boston accent when

I was around talking to my mom, and I know technically

you're not supposed to swear around your parents

and all that, but it's just the way that the

culture was that I was around. So yeah, but no,

now that you've explained it, I'm like, oh, so

she's gonna have her own shit my dad says. My

dad, he, okay. I know we're getting off the track

here, but if you speak to my dad, you swore that

he grew up in the same era as my grandmother

from my mom's side. Okay. Okay. Just to give

a little insight, my dad grew up on a farm in

the middle of Backwoods, Kentucky. They didn't

even, no, didn't even have an address. They were

so far in the hills there. And so he lived on

a farm. One of the things, he didn't have indoor

plumbing until he was 16, so they used to outhouse

until he was 16. He's not that old. It'll be

interesting. There you go, folks. There's some

insight to Nicole. You can search her out on

Google. Just search Beatles Diva. Beatles like

the gold bug, not the band. I'm not just a plain

old movie anymore. I'm a gold bug. I am at TF2
