About this Episode

Mike and Nicole dive into Ryan Ferrier and Valentin Ramon's Hell-bound second issue, following Teddy Graham through group therapy, a chaotic night out, and glimpses of heaven's awkward angels. The hosts praise the Hell sequences and the tragic depth of Teddy's wife Maria, but find the Heaven scenes confusing and tonally off. They also break down the comic's sharp religious satire, Dogma callbacks, and the fake "Hell Daily" newspaper pages that anchor the issue with dark humor.

Hot damn I'm Ryan Ferrier and you're listening

to the GCRN's comic podcast The Pullback. In

this episode Mike and Nicole have joined us in

hell. How bizarre is that? Hear them talk about

my new series from IDW publishing entitled Hot

Damn, only on the GeekCast radio network. Hello

and welcome to The Pullback. This is the month

of May and we're not doing Batman month this

year. I know everyone's really really sad about

that. I just, I want, okay, so I went back to

the pull bag's very first introductory episode,

episode zero, and I listened to what Steve and

I, how Steve Megatron and I, TF2 and Mike introduced

the pull bag four years ago. And in one of them,

one of the things he says is that what he, one

of those storylines he liked the best was Batman

Nightfall. So I go on Comixology and I'm looking

for it and looking for it and I see they have

the three... big giant trades on there. While

I'm all about digital comics, I'm not paying

60 bucks for three trades on digital right now.

So, Batman Month has kind of been cancelled this

year. Maybe next year for year five of the show

after doing this thing for five years. Maybe

we'll do it then. We will have a Batman episode

this month, but... coming up here inside the

pull bag for may twenty sixteen in this episode

we're going to be doing all back issue classics

because we just released at the end of april

we released uh... uh... episode where the hell

i'm sorry i'm just not thinking today folks the

end of march we released episode one thirty six

which is our idw deviations episode If anyone

knows me and has known me in the podcasting for

the last six or seven years, I apologize. First

of all, Oh, the deviations. No, I talked about

knowing you for all these years. I'll introduce

that voice here in a minute, but you already

know who it is, folks. So basically, back at

the end of March, we had episode 136, the IDW

Deviations episode. And anyone that has known

me through the podcasting, whether a listener

or a crazy co -host, knows that I always have

to make a certain 37 joke. And episode 137 of

The Pull Bag is coming up. So I'm like, okay,

we're gonna postpone that till June, and we'll

just do four or five back -issue classics. It's

my way around the numbering of the episodes,

because I actually found out that there is a

Clerks the Comic adaptation of the film. So,

yeah, joining me, of course, after all this time

of me talking and acting like Kevin Smith's,

you know, long -ass intros. Nicole, Beatles Diva

Hillstorm, hello. Hi. Yeah. Hi. And we are here

and once again, thank you so much to Ryan Ferrier

We're here to talk about IDW and Ryan Ferrier's

along with Valentine Ramones hot damn hot damn

number two is Out right now as of this recording

is out this Wednesday May 4th May the 4th be

with you, especially with this series hot damn

So we're gonna try our best I will specifically

I'm gonna try my best not to spoil every single

thing in this comic because we are doing this

before it actually releases so But Ryan came

on Ryan gave us that really really cool in cool

new intros. So thank you so much to Ryan he This

past weekend was at the what did he say Calgary

comic and Entertainment Expo? I believe it was

yeah So he was up in his hometown of Calgary

and Canada up there doing a convention this past

weekend So I'm sure that was a lot of fun for

him Let's jump right into it for a hot damn number

two first of all I didn't like I guess I wasn't

really realizing that It was gonna be so close

between the first review and the second really.

I wasn't really realizing that, oh, goddamn,

it's gonna come out at the beginning of the month,

because I'm so used to a lot of the IDW comics

we talk about coming out at the end of the month.

Because, let's face it, certain comics at IDW

always get held up by diamond or some stupid

thing or, you know, trucks go missing or de Plaine

de Plaine ends up in Germany or some weird shipping

malfunction. Not IDW's fault, but still yeah,

I always used to be more IDW than the other two

major ones Yeah, it's the curse of IDW sadly

it's you got to break that curse Okay, so hot

damn number two we have two covers we have the

main cover and we have the subscription cover

Which one do you like better? I love that subscription

cover I I guess it's because my second homes

in Las Vegas, so it's kind of like okay It has

a special meaning Yeah, oh the covers Did you

look at what it says on the when the jackpot

three skulls and in in line will do it Jackpot

is additional to the regular reward You really

need this I like that instead of money you insert

your soul Yeah, I Don't even want to know I think

that's is You know, that's a bunch of bones enough

and oh, it's a skull machine. Yeah, it's cool.

So they're all like femurs and Yeah, it's cool.

I like how it looks looks great Yeah, that reward

doesn't look like it's worth anything Maggots

and guts So we've got this as usual Ryan Ferrier

on writing valance and Ramon On illustration

edited by Dave Hedgecock and obviously I do these

publishers Ted Adams We start off back in group

Almost no way we start off with meeting Joe Gotta

meet the cup of Joe because that's where the

first is does the first issue left off was we

got introduced to Satan What do you think of

this whole thing the whole meeting here well,

I mean I want to know what Satan's up to because

I'm pretty sure he's a busy guy and he's not

just gonna have a casual cup of coffee with some

new recruit so it's kind of like he's being Satan

he is trying to be the good guy he's trying to

be your best friend but in the end it's all gonna

be about him so it's kind of like don't fall

for it don't fall for his gimmicks yeah no don't

don't follow don't won't fall for that serpent

feeding you that apple exactly oh boy uh all

right so since we're not gonna really we're not

gonna try to spoil too much of the actual story

here what do you think of satan's office joe's

office here i i actually i just can't get over

his outfit his outfit is one of those prudish

frat boy kind of looks. And I'm just like, I

wouldn't be wanting to speak to you just because

of that. If Ellington had changed the shirt to

be like a Hawaiian shirt, I would find it extremely

ironic because one of my buddies, Joe Reed, that

does the turtles comics with me, he wears Hawaiian

shirts all the time. Hawaiian shirts are awesome.

Yeah. So Joe and and Teddy have a sit down here

You know I Don't I don't even think I can not

spoil this stuff Just so funny Like I said Satan's

being the charmer that he is yeah, so You can

just imagine the BS that he's feeding him right

now. Mm -hmm. Oh, he made a joke. I think it's

later. Somebody made a joke somewhere about...

Oh, I should mention this episode, even though

it's been a while since the event happened, but

this episode of the Pull Bag, because reading

through this comic basically reminded me of...

Almost everything to do with heaven and hell

and God and Satan and dogma So this episode of

the podcast is dedicated to the late great Alan

Rickman Because of a scene that's going to be

coming up in this up in this in in this issue

here back in the old days God was vengeful and

hot -tempered and His wrath was bore by the angel

of death named Loki When Sodom and Gomorrah was

destroyed that was Loki when the waters wiped

out everything with the exception of Noah and

his menagerie, that was Loki. And he was good

at what he did. But one day, he refused to bear

God's wrath any longer. Why? He listened to his

friend, a Gregori, by the name of Bartleby. Gregori?

One of the choirs of angels. They're called Watchers.

Kiss what they do. So one day, Loki's wiping

out all the firstborn of Egypt. Ah, the 10th

plague. Tell a person that you're the Metatron

and they stare at you blankly. Mention something

out of a Charlton Heston movie and suddenly everybody's

a theology scholar. May I continue uninterrupted?

Once he's done with the firstborn, Loki takes

his friend Bartleby out for a post -slaughter

drink. And over many rounds, they get into this

discussion about whether or not murder in the

name of God is okay. And in the end, Bartleby

convinces Loki to quit his position and take

one which doesn't involve slaughter. So, very

inebriated, Loki tells God he quits, throws down

his fiery sword, and gives him the finger, which

ruins it for the rest of us, because from that

day forward, God decreed that angels could no

longer imbibe alcohol, hence all the spitting.

So Teddy gets back to Costello. They have to

go to this... What is it? Maleficent or something

or other the punishment? Yeah for doing the the

the possession in the first issue So they go

back to group or well Teddy goes back to group

and he's having a great time you Yeah So the

other two people in like there's only four people

in the group this time like Really? Well, it's

three people. It's the counselor and three other

people. It's Teddy and two others. Wow, the group

really shortened up, didn't it? Well, I'm pretty

sure there's several groups, just like there's

several AA meetings in a day. Yeah, that's true.

So Abaddon asks Teddy... Will say this evidence

asks him to tell Tell us something good forget

the sins for a sec. What's your happiest moment?

Something bubbly and rosy and full of puppy dogs

and go go now I was hoping there was gonna be

puppy dogs Yeah, we've got enough of those in

kennel block. We don't need puppy dogs in hell.

I have too many puppy dogs Yeah, yes, you can

no you can't Yes, you can you're wrong No, I'm

not so we get it puppy dogs Unless they're in

this shelter than you have too many puppy dogs

So we go into the flashback and once again Valentine

showing off the past as well as the sins that

got you into hell with the black and white on

the past as far as the actual time and then the

colors on just what they're you know what what

they're going to be doing here um and he basically

tells the story of how he met um met his wife

or his girlfriend or whoever she's supposed to

be i think it's his wife yeah probably um what

do we think of of these two flashback pages here

oh i i like how it starts off okay I don't know

if they did this on purpose, but I love how it's

all black and white, but there's just a little

bit of color that makes you focus in on that

particular object. And I like how it gets brighter

and brighter as it goes on, as he keeps on telling

his story, you know, because he's getting to

the happy part of the story. So it starts off

really dark and then it gets to be more colorful

at the end. And I really liked how they did that.

And I really like his wife. She's a person that

I could tell that I liked from the moment that

I met her just because she's looking out for

him and she's not using him like his other friends.

And so, but I hope she doesn't change because

I really want to like her. yeah because there's

certain other things in this story we'll get

to it it's just like oh i want to like you please

yep um yeah i want to really like her as well

and and like you said i mean the whole infusion

of color on the black and white like this is

really really cool the way you know because i

didn't think of it in the way that you had said

last time when we did the first issue where the

the the color stuff is essentially the sins and

the only thing i have to disagree with on the

sins but i'm glad it's colored as i'm sorry those

waffles are not that sinful i mean those waffles

are no no this is this is the exact opposite

this is his happy moments yeah so this isn't

that's totally different from this issue because

i don't see balloons being sinful Well, I mean

waffles can be simple if it's gluttony I mean

if you take it to the extreme Go to steak and

shake and get all you can eat pancakes Really

take advantage of it. Yeah Alright, so we come

out of the flashback. We're going to we're going

with Teddy and Costello to the Hurt Depot Geez

so we're going to the Hurt Depot so they can

have their their their punishment and this new

character Polyphosaur or whatever his name is.

What do you think of that design there? I've

seen something familiar to this in the Dark Tower

series and I love it, you know The half man half

bird. I love it. It's Kind of creepy Like how

his torture devices Yeah, I don't know if his

design and his look would really help the torture

devices cuz that I'm sorry. I have to say it.

I cannot not spoil this the torture devices are

friggin Legos. I Don't know if you should have

spoiled that Because it all is okay in all honesty

that is one thing that everyone has experienced

and it's not fun So I don't really like that

that they use common objects instead because

when you meet this This creature, I guess, you

know I mean he has these painful metal objects

and then next thing you go to his Legos. It's

It just shows Ryan and Valentine's Sense of irony

sense of humor sense of oh my god. What are they

gonna hit us over the head with now? There was

When we put out the first episode The episode

for the first issue review He actually tweeted

us and said oh my god you guys because I I had

to, how can I not sit here and go back to OMC

and record part of how bizarre to put it in the,

how can I not do that? He basically stepped up

to the plate and gave me that right there. so

he tweeted at me saying oh you guys are crazy

or something or other and it's just one of those

things where now I'm actively in the rest of

these this issue specifically and then issues

three three four and five I'm actively looking

for stuff that I can grab this wrong it's just

so so good all right what else we got with this

one so yeah they're uh they're taking their punishment

um what is the is that supposed to be sunny d

no it's tearful shampoo is it tear tear free

that's right i remember as a kid johnson and

johnson tearless shampoo good lord so after their

uh or during their their punishment we then go

to heaven and I got to say, I'm not going to

spoil a lot of this, but I got to say this whole

heaven scene was just weird. Did you find this

weird? Not a place at all? This is what's good.

I really, the hell part is awesome. And then

when we get to heaven, it's just like, this is

heaven. First, you know why it's not heaven.

They're speaking in text. They're doing text

type. And I'm like, that to me is hell. Okay.

Not your freaking words. Yeah, I don't know it

just This whole scene with the angels and this

is where I got the whole thing and went back

to the Alan Rickman thing for dogma with the

the angels getting drunk in this issue and I

immediately thought of oh That's because it's

you know, I thought of dogma I just want to know

the reason. Because if you think about it, Teddy

is in hell because of his alcoholism. Right.

So why would the temptation of alcohol and possibly

alcoholism be in heaven? Yeah, maybe because

God looks like Aquaman. I swear he looks like

Aquaman from Brave and the Bold. Outrageous!

I do like this heaven scene. I like how you can

see more of their wings. And how it's not really

comfortable for them. Right. I do like that.

Yup. So as the heaven scene goes along We have

these two angels who He he's trying it's It's

a whole friendzone thing folks, that's all I'm

gonna say it's a whole friendzone things And

then we have more drama with that we go back

to hell We have Teddy and Costello dealing with

the The the aftermath of their punishment or

I assume the punishment thing is gonna be a weekly

thing or something I don't know how long that's

gonna I mean it is hell after all you're supposed

to be there to be punished So funny So they basically

want to go Costello wants to go out and have

them get wasted And they go to your mama's face

Okay, this is sounds so weird Between this this

place that they went to and last at last issue

It kind of reminds me of a sushi place in Las

Vegas If you guys want it has some entertainment

Go look up sushi loco in las vegas look at their

menu you'll be cracking up for like five minutes

that's what i think it just reminded me because

that's kind of i think that's one of their sushi

rolls as you promised me or something like that

yeah one of the panels in this page has the two

of them just cackling the the the middle uh top

middle panel on the page here and all's i can

think of is they're hulk they're teddy and costello

are what if hulk and rudolph had a baby they're

green with red noses like oh god jim carries

the grinch can't have nothing on these people

the only thing i wanted to be able to make out

and i can't because we're using the idw maybe

you've made it out the only thing i can't make

out because we're using the idw preview copy

or the review copy i want to know what it says

on the balloon on the balloon it says best best

friends maybe that logo is right on there yeah

best god yeah I can't I can't I've been yeah

that's one of the things I want to know I want

to know what it says in the balloon yeah so we

go to another scene here and I have this isn't

this is gonna be a spoiler but I just I find

this just absolutely hilariously Earth, St. Mary's

blessed sacred holy heart of perpetual immaculate

light mission of the Sunset Mega Church. Oh my

god. That puts a bunch of religions into one

nutshell, I guess. Yeah, pretty much. All they're

missing is the Latter -day Saints. Uh, can't

do that. According to many people, we're not

Christians. That's wrong people. So why I even

brought that up is because I remember those old

commercials from the 80s talking about the Latter

Day Saints. Oh yeah. They're good harder commercials.

It's a good reminder. People, don't be a douchebag.

Be kind to one another. Yup. I guess it's pretty

sad when people need a reminder for that, though.

Yeah, I know. So these next two pages here at

the church, at the mega church. And again, where

was it? At the church itself, there was something

somewhere in this issue. I think it's later.

So we're at the, we're at the mega church and

we have, um, Teddy's wife whose name escapes

me at the moment. I believe it's Maria. I think

that's what it is. I'm bad. I apologize. Really,

really, really bad. And I, I should have paid

attention a little bit more, even though I did,

but she is at confessional. And she's basically

trying to confess that she doesn't really...

She doesn't know if she has the strength to get

over Teddy. Anyway, I understand where she's

coming from, you know? They changed each other's

lives. Yep. All of a sudden he's gone. I feel

sorry for her. Yeah, I do too. I mean Because

I want to know more about I mean Ryan or valentine

have given us glimpses into their life together

And I know the whole point of the comic is you

know, right? Teddy's life in hell, but I want

more scenes with their past like figuring out

kind of how they met in that kind of thing And

I'm hoping that will be in the next few issues.

So, you know Absolutely so we go back to heaven

and What's his name? Is it Adriel again? I'm

so hard. Yeah Adriel's Adriel is trying to get

a hold of his his angel friend that he tried

to get out of the friend zone with and Yeah angels

texting. Yeah, you're right. It just seems weird.

That's not having to me. That's how spill it

out. Oh What is in this page? I wasn't zoomed

in enough but again Dogma, I swear. Ryan, what

are you doing? Ryan or Valentin, what are you

doing? Because they're at this burger joint,

okay? And the mascot is supposed to be some sort

of... Or not burger joints, they're at the pizza

joints. The mascot is supposed to be some sort

of Jesus Christ kind of person, but all I can

think of is friggin' George Carlin. It's the

Buddy Christ! I like how there's water on the

floor and he just walks on it. Yeah So So Adriel

because he doesn't He said he's sick at the age

of life, yeah, basically he gives up his wings,

yeah Yep, and then we end up in God's bedroom

Yeah, this was kind of awkward Yeah This is really

Really awkward And then we got cherubim and seraphim

I'm not gonna kiss him. Let me wake his holy

hiney up So basically they wake him up because

they've got a problem and I almost thought valentine

at the second page of of God's bedroom scene

here I Really almost thought he was gonna do

a Nike check with that black bar That'd be awesome

It's the second coming, oh no So we close out

the issue with two more pages in hell here Where

Teddy what's he doing? He's uh he is He's waking

up from the binger that they had Yeah, that's

right. He wakes up before Costello does. And

so he decides to go snooping around and he finds

something. Yeah. But we won't tell you what that

is. Yeah, no, we can't tell you what that is.

It's going to be a game changer for issue three.

Yeah. So yeah, he finds something. Costello wakes

up and he hides it from him. And Costello is

like, oh, but let's really, no, Teddy says, yeah,

it was fun. We should do it again tonight, but

let's really get black out. Let's really black

out this time. And that's how the issue ends.

Before we get into final thoughts, what I noticed

in this one, and I might've missed it on the

first issue. I don't think it was in there, but.

We have the what the hell daily up dog. Yeah,

I don't remember this in the first one. No, I

don't. So I assumed that this was going to be

a letters column for the comic, even though this

is only going to be a five issue series. I just

I wasn't sure what this is going to be. And then

the first thing that grabs my eye is massive

pizza rolls recall. This articles were pretty

funny. I got a bit there. Yeah. This is, this

was a good plus to this issue. Yeah, it really,

really was. Uh, and it is written like an actual

news report. Like all the articles are written

like it's an actual newsroom and it's just so

cool. Um, the other, the other, uh, announcements

on the other headlines on air, Satan announces

continuing rain in hell for more millenniums.

And then the other one was census reveals stats

increase in pro lifers 9 -eleven truthers and

fuckboys And then you have they've got advertisements

for Dave and Dave to They've got a couple of

things from the publishers desk kind of thing

and then that's that's pretty much it So hot

damn number two overall. What'd you think? Okay,

overall I really enjoyed the hell parts Yeah,

but they go to heaven I kind of confused about

what it's supposed to take away from it Yeah

God's bedroom was a little awkward The funny

thing is the first thing I thought when I saw

God in his bed was at first I thought that was

Teddy and Costello until I realized that the

mail didn't have the the the goat legs so i was

like okay so it's not our main characters that's

good yeah so so yeah that that was kind of i

just don't get where i'm supposed to and maybe

they'll be explained in in the next issues i

don't know what i'm supposed to be thinking of

heaven right now because to me they're annoying

teenager angels and i don't know i it's it's

very It's very 902 1 -0 ish right now. They have

the pizza place You know, it's a bunch of teenagers

and teenage drama and I'm us. I do like the part

where Gladriel Did I say it right? I Think so.

Yeah, where he walked away. I really liked that

that moment. That was a good moment The rest

of the heaven stuff. I'm kind of like I don't

know what to take away from this But yeah, but

the health stuff is amazing the stuff with his

wife and her in the confession because there's

other things that I revealed in that confession

that which we didn't talk about which yeah, yeah,

which is and I want to know more about her story

that made me Yeah, like said the only thing I'm

confused on is No, I am absolutely loving it

like like you said the hell parts are great the

heaven part was like I could like in the first

issue we got introduced to the heaven part of

the thing like through Costello and through his

connections to One of the angels up there and

when that in that comm center or whatever else

so that I can understand with this it's like

in trying to introduce something that I'm just

not sure where they're going yet. I'm just questioning.

I'm like, what am I supposed to be feeling here?

Absolutely. What would you give issue number

two out of zero to five? I would give it a three

and a half. Like I said, they have a part that

kind of confuses me, but everything else is really

good. I really liked it. Yeah, absolutely. I'm

right there with you three and a half. It's it's

the heaven scenes that just Three and a half

out of five from both of us is not a bad rating

at all But it just it wasn't as as epic as the

whole the comic on a whole wasn't as epic as

the first part liked and parts we didn't like

So Like I was saying a bit ago, about Ryan replying

to us on Twitter about issue number one's release.

You played Hal Bazaar, you sick bastards. Thanks

so much. And like I said, I'm actively looking

for references and stuff now in this series to

see what else he pulls in that I can pull out

and put in Ryan's awesome guy Yes, yes he is

Alright folks that's gonna do it for us here

on this episode of the pull bag like I said at

the beginning of the podcast Depending on release

We will have I know one thing that's happening

in May because it's already out well Steve and

I will be doing the first six issues of the 2015

Batman Beyond series by Dan Juergens and and

Bernard Chang so I know we're gonna be doing

that but the other May episodes may vary I know

you and I are gonna have our Kind of like blues

part two with issue three and four since that

series is about to wrap up Joe and I may get

to TMNT 56 to 58 which is the Leatherhead arc

other than that. I'm not entirely sure Yeah,

that's what's coming up on the pullback where

can people find you online just Google Beatles

Diva Beatles like the band at the book and That's

me Yeah, I'm simple like that She's living the

simple life over there folks All right, make

your greatest game in the comics and we will

catch you next time Oh, oh, oh, it's my favorite

fictional character of all time of the pullback,

the GCRN's comic review and discussion podcast.
