Hello and welcome to The Pull Bag! This is yet
again another Back Issue Classics and what most
people don't know is that in the background on
the staff end of The Pull Bag's Back Issue Classics
we have a numbering system and this is the overall
25th episode of the Back Issue Classics section
of The Pull Bag. I am your host, TFG1Mike. Joining
me is, uh, Skeletor? Yeah! Good morning, everyone!
I really need you to recut that Honda commercial,
because you would be a much better Skeletor voice
for that Honda commercial than whoever the hell
they got. Jeff Bennett tries. That was Jeff Bennett?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure. He didn't try. I love
the man, don't get me wrong. He didn't try nearly
hard enough. Oppenheimer's still around. Hell,
Brian Dobson could have done a better job. uh...
as i think it was brian dobson of them in the
two thousand two series but you know a uh...
so as you can tell we have mister eight s bairns
back again hello sir how are you doing i am doing
as well as someone can on tuesday night uh...
god did you ever and this is where it's a comic
show i shouldn't bring this up but you've mentioned
uh... a tuesday night and all i can think of
is Boy meets world because Sean's mom left on
a Tuesday and in the sequel series girl meets
world Corey says something really really stupid
and then he turns around like oh Sean. How you
been? Well, it's not Tuesday Alright folks so
Bet you all guessing what other than looking
at the post on the website But guessing why a
das baron is back with me because we're continuing
our masters of the universe coverage here inside
the poll bag We're going to be reviewing the
final seven issues of the 2013 ongoing series
Which has now turned into a new ongoing series
called he man the eternity war And welcome back
and in another episode and talk about eternity
war I'll tell you folks right now because we're
pretty much on the beginning of eternity war
I Think what we're gonna do is we're just gonna
do what Joe Reed and I do with the TMNT issues
We're gonna do two at a time instead of up team
number at a time So last time we did this we
talked about the lies within arc Um, when you
went to read these, did the bad taste wash out
of your mouth? Yes. Good. These seven issues
are a definite step up than what we've been getting.
The only thing that I am always confused about
because you have this and then, you know, the
original canon that everyone swears by and then
these many comments. mini -comics that get included
with the Masters Classics figures. I haven't
read many of the mini -comics that come with
them, but do they tie into this somehow, or are
they two completely different cannons? I don't
know. I have not bought an action figure in probably
seven years. I honestly could not tell you. Fair
enough. I do know that anything that has to do
with the DC, anything DC has published, it's
all in, like when we started this, when you and
I started this with the 2012 mini -series, it
starts pretty much from there or, I think there
was a digital series called Masters of the Universe,
which is before the 2012 mini, I think that was
in 2011 or something. I think that started it
and then the 2012 mini, because you and I were
like, at the end of that, you and I were like,
oh my god. it's a blue hey what's happening here
is that going to be continued into this new ongoing
and it was although they didn't really get to
it until dcu versus motu but um yeah i i think
anything mattel does on their own With the toys
the toy pack ins. I don't think the mini comics
have anything to do with this Okay, I always
found myself lost because like are we taking
what we've been given? Up until the the six issue
miniseries and then go off from there versus,
you know zero year basically, I think it starts
with that This I honestly think it starts with
that six issue miniseries. Okay, there's nothing
I've seen The thing that we've read so far mentions
anything prior to that that I know of I mean,
yeah sure we had the The hordak origin one -shot
where it's a thousand years ago, but that all
ties in obviously because we're gonna get to
that today, but So yeah, we start off with issue
number 13 the prelude to the blood of gray skull
and this really bugs me if the origin of shira
did not start in this why is it stamped on this
issue don't get me wrong i love the logo but
the origin really doesn't start until issue 14
because issue 13 is as it says it's a prelude
to the blood of greyskull and it's a backstory
on what happened during king greyskull's time
so Why the hell would they put the origin of
She -Ra on this issue? Well, how many other titles
can we get here? We have He -Man and the Masters
of the Universe, The Origin of She -Ra, Prelude
to the Blood of Grayskull, Mekanet Gets New Pants.
Yeah, it's a little crazy. The cover for this
is King Grayskull forging what I can only assume
is the sort of protection, because the sort of
power, I didn't realize until I actually held
this up in front of my face, is Leaning right
next to him on on the floor on his little table
there So I assume he is forging the sort of protection
in this cover. I'd say most likely Most likely
what do you think of the cover very powerful?
And you know it's it's gray skull in a very classic
look. He hasn't been upgraded in any By any means
which you know once we dive into this all these
characters pretty much haven't in this Prelude
piece yeah, no not at all They even worked in
the Master's Classics Hordak hood in that first
page. It took me until now to realize that he
plunged the Power Sword right through his chest.
I noticed it before, but it took me until opening
it right now. So we start with the final moments
of the Horde War Eternia 1 ,000 years ago. That
top panel of Hordak, he looks pretty badass.
Yeah, he is covered in blood. Well, so is Grayskull.
Yeah, so is Grayskull. I've said it before and
I'll say it again, I love seeing the classic
80s filmation power sword. I think we all do.
me well yeah I know I know it's an understatement
but compared to what we get later yeah you know
and don't get me wrong I understand the sword
need to be updated because of the powers whatever
else is just I'm so used to watching the He -Man
cartoon series and that sword being able to do
anything you know like I don't need another I
mean if you want to give me a different like
The 2002 series, I did not want to see the classic
filmation sword. I wanted to see the sword that
they had created with that series, you know.
And I just think that with making this, you know,
attorney has passed, I think it's great that
they're using the classic sword and it's so awesome.
What do you think of this opening shot here,
the opening two -page spread? It's everything
you want. Mean yeah, it's a little on the violent
side But this I I'm really digging this whole
flashback piece hmm me too me too and Now that
I'm looking at this. I'm almost looking at it
as oh my god, but oh my god Superman just killed
Batman with a sword Let's be honest, folks. If
you're looking at this two -page panel, and I
will put it in the post so people can see what
I'm talking about here, you've got King Grayskull
basically plunging the sword through Hordak's
chest, right through his bat symbol there, and
he's got this... lion mane looking hair with
a red cape coming out of the back of it and Hordak
has got black gloves with a gray suit and a red
bat on his chest if that I mean okay sure it's
not a black bat on his chest it just the way
this is drawn the way that it's colored and angled
it makes me look it makes me think it's Batman
even though I know it's not so we then get to
the celebration, the month of festivities. I
know in olden times they did this, where they
had a month of celebration after a big battle.
I just don't know if that could ever work. Well,
definitely not nowadays. It's like, I just don't
know. So what were your initial thoughts after
you read this one? Was oh, we're kind of getting
a little backstory with the whole gar Race and
You know yet pretty much all the gar are decked
out in cyclone or many nods the cyclone. No very
much So yeah, whether it be the males or the
females It does have a very kind of Thor vibe
to it but not enough to the point where I'm getting
irritated by it or it feels like a total knockoff.
Right. Now, this does bring up the contention
with some of the fandom how introducing the character
of Grayskull kind of takes away the emphasis
of He -Man being the most powerful man in the
universe. Right. But I enjoy looking at it all.
Yeah, I mean, it's very interesting. It is...
And this is giving us an origin from where He
- from where He -Man's powers come from and where
- how the castle gets to - well, it doesn't really
go too much into how Castle Grayskull itself
was built, but you know, I mean, this is his
ancestor. You know, this is, as I've already
said it, this is 1 ,000 years ago from the current
timeline that we're in, so it makes sense and,
you know... He -Man can't live forever unless,
you know, he and Tila just hurry up and have
a ch - oh wait, I'll save that for issue 19.
You know, you know what I mean? It's like, it's
one of those things where unless He -Man is gonna
have an heir, it doesn't really bother me that
you have King Grayskull who lived in the past
and was the most powerful man in the universe
and then his great -grandson? Great -great -great
- I don't know, whatever. you know one of those
things um what interests me about the the flashback
issue here is that it looks like one of these
sorceresses or one of the um one of the people
that serve the goddess uh vena is his queen so
he had a sorceress for a queen that's an interesting
twist Like it, but it's a very very strange interesting
twist because you know you flash forward you
change the costumes a bit That's basically he
man and the sorceress as we know her Well the
I guess you want to call it daughter they they
refer to as Tila knob But that's the sorceress
as we come to know her right. That's the sorceress
as we come to know her And then obviously The
other Tila. Which, that is one thing. It is one
thing in the entire history of Masters of the
Universe. It always makes me just... It's like
my brain is, you know, a fried egg. Because I
just don't get how you can have her mother be
the same name, you know. I mean... Yeah. It's
not like you know Oh Tila not jr. Tila not see
you can't do that unless you know Tila is kind
of like a family name and then maybe So we get
to Audi and and and and sarin and and they Basically
are gonna start this coup Sarin resists and resists
and resists and he basically lies to her and
says she's gonna have a child which The only
thing I can think of, and well, I guess we'll
have to bring this up later, but I'll bring it
up here. Is she supposed to have been... Keldor's
mother? Yes. I don't see how that could be, though.
Well, they kind of explain it in the... Later?
Yeah. I just don't see how that could be because...
Because Miro is Randor's father. Yes. Oh yeah,
okay, never mind. I got it, I got it, I got it.
So they're starting this whole coup, and yeah,
the cyclone stuff looks awesome. Love that armor.
And then the... Oddy, right? That's his name?
Yeah. Oddy, yeah. Hands are the sword, which...
Is that one of the swords that were daggers that...
I mean, obviously it has a snake head, but was
that a snake man accessory? Yeah, oh yeah, and
then that's that's a that's the cursed sword
And we get the shot of the Yeah, pretty much
yeah So Saren goes and she she kills grayskull
rather brutally yeah Kind of and she basically
slays him Yeah, wow And she would find that You
know as we end the prelude here It says Eternia
the darkest night of all 1 ,000 years ago and
you see the whole village and everything around
Castle Grayskull just burning to the ground I
love this issue. I think it's a great story.
It is but like at this point he has the power
of Grayskull, correct? Yeah, don't you think
you know something like he would have had some
sort of spider sense that would have won went
off like she's trying to poison you Yeah, possibly
possibly But I don't think that would happen
though because as he says What is this? You're
like a daughter to me, and she says I know close
your eyes You know I I think the the love of
a father or the love of a parent for a child
Can blind you to anything? because you want to
believe the best in that child and Sadly she
gutted him like a fish Any other final thoughts
on issue 13 I just I did really enjoy the story.
Yeah. Uh, I should mention that, um, uh, it's
done by Dan Abnett, but all the stories in this,
uh, it says, it's so weird. It says, Dan did
the script. And then it says at the, at the bottom
story by Rob David and Lloyd Goldfein. It says
this in every single issue up to issue 19. In
issue 19, it's actually Rob David writing it,
and Abnett is nowhere to be found. Maybe that's
because he was working on Eternity War at the
time. Also, Pop Mahan is back, which is great.
Like, every time I see him come up, it just seems
like his artwork is constantly evolving. Yeah.
Because I see some... Things that look the same,
but it just it looks a little different each
time. I see it and I'm Enjoying it much more
this time around Absolutely. Absolutely. So getting
to issue 14 we have the origin of She -Ra. He
-Man and the Master of the Universe the cover
is She -Ra She's bedazzled all over the place
because of the power I guess. Yeah, it's the
whole transformation sequence. Yeah that's not
the transformation sequence i remember but okay
um and then you've got he -man or adam or whomever
on the left and hordak on the right um she's
pretty much um a tug of war object for these
guys at this point we um we open this one with
uh On the island of Amantgar, home of the Gar
people, Eternia, one thousand years ago. A thousand
years. But does fear not diminish? It will never
go away. She is running. All the devils and demons
of Eternia pursue her. So, you know, a thousand
years ago her name was Saren. So this is after
she kills, pretty much picks up right after killing
Grayskull. and she's just running through the
woods and she ends up being trapped there. What
do you think of the colors and the art in these
first couple of pages here? That last shot where
they give you the title page, she's crouched
down crying, the face is a little off. But man,
I didn't want to be trapped in this idea. If
only Eric Cartman were actually skinny. Yeah,
I could see that I do like the the wearing of
the The the wornness of the blood out on the
elbows and everything Absolutely Absolutely,
so we go to 1 ,000 years later Adora wakes and
She's still in her her uniform. I mean, it's
not like she can, you know, go find a white undershirt
and red vest anytime soon. Well, once she ditches
a cloak, they're, they're accused of that. True.
Yeah. So how long, how much time has passed since
this and the last time we saw her? I can't, I
can't, it can't be that much long because the
last time we saw her was what, issue 12? Yeah.
Well, you know, her hair goes from buzz to chin
length. Yeah. I think that's just a design, more
so than anything else. I mean, and they have
to, and I mean, even in this issue, it gets longer
and longer and longer. Well, as these issues
progress, as this final storyline progresses,
it gets longer and longer and longer because
they have to get to a point where she is the
classic somewhat of the classic She -Ra so she
wakes up and He -Man comes and finds her basically
and she has a nice little touching moment with
Battle Cat and He -Man says Battle Cat is fond
of you he doesn't befriend people easily Can
really see that I can see battle cat like tearing
through people And Adam says you seem to have
a way with animals sister Yeah, there are a lot
of nods to oh, yeah prior canon in these oh,
yeah, the only thing that like Well, well well
we'll get to it so they have a nice little Nice
little conversation about the fact that Randor
is dead And you know so he tells her that and
she says so you're king now No, I will not take
the crown until attorney is free of the horde.
This is my oath And they go and they have to
get to Attorneys version of Mos Eisley, I guess.
Yeah If Mos Eisley were a boat yard I Mean it's
very touching the the the conversation between
the two of them You know and lo and behold snake
snake lady shows up Tila shows up and and in
some sort of message form And she basically puts
a door on the path And we And gives her the dagger
yeah, yeah, you know this sure bodes well Yeah,
really I know right Gives her the cursed sword
And then I don't know if like I can tell that
there's nothing missing out on my comic cuz this
is kind of where the Where the in the physical
copy where the staple really juts out so I know
this is like the middle of the issue But it feels
like a page is missing here because there's no
transition between perhaps I can help with that
how family strength family is a strength that
demons fear and then Adora to your left. It's
just all of a sudden in battle against whore
troopers I'm thinking it's more of like a hard
cut slash montage type Don't like it. I Just
wish that there was something where? Something
else that could have been said on that page like
you know let's let's go Over here. Let's go this
way something else so Hey, man, and adora and
battle cat are all Tearing up the horde troopers
Good. Oh, yeah, I'm six days slashing slashing
and slashing yeah There's horde troopers all
over the place and you can pretty much tell that
they're non -humans in that thing. They aren't
robots. Yeah, it made me wonder for a second
because in the flashback to King Grayskull, you
see these horde troopers and it almost looks
like they're whatever race Batros is. Right.
Because they have the ears and the purple skin
and then... these shots of them tearing them
up you can definitely see the circuitry and all
but in the face there's a purple glow around
the eyes so it took me a second to realize what
was going on. So we get to Athraport or Altraport
and it's basically a modern -day freight zone
well a modern -day freight zone to us because
the freight zone did not look anything like this
in Secret of the Sword. Well, they're they're
like terraforming the planet basically and they're
yeah horde outposts all over the planet. Yeah
Pretty much. Yeah, and you're right. She pretty
much had her adora outfit on underneath the black
armor Good lord. We shouldn't be cold in the
wintertime And this one kind of ends with you
know, kind of ends with, uh, we have to get through
that hellhole and find a boat. Hey, I'm game
if you are. Adam and Adora, children of Randoor,
of the blood of greyskull, side by side with
the mighty battle cat at their heels. And we
see a page that I bet every Master's fan is waiting
to see. Look everybody, it's Metalhead. oops
wrong franchise it's pretty obvious you don't
even need to see issue 16 or it well it is issue
16 but because they don't actually get to this
person until but i mean all of us know three
eyes come on go three eyes it a circle square
and a triangle i think we got this covered oh
yeah yeah Overall, issue 14, another great story,
another continuing saga of their journey to free
Eternia. Love the story, love the art. What about
you? It's a great beginning to a warrior's quest.
Absolutely. And we get to issue 15. My brother,
my savior, and its multiple versions of He -Man.
I just love the painting. It looks very much
like the old toy box art. And even the shot of...
I can't remember the name that they gave him.
I almost want to say Caesar, but the Alcala He
-Man origins. They've got him in that kind of
crouched over pose like he did, I believe, in
the mini -comic. Or the mini -story, if you want
to call it. Right, right. It's basically every
toy version. Okay, they're missing one but Yeah,
it's yeah, cuz the one is battle armor. The other
is Thunder Punch There's a regular 80s filmation
version no flying fists Wait what? Well that
there were there were three he -man variants.
Oh, that's okay Yeah, we don't need We have Thunder
Punch we don't need flying fists he -man So the
the armor the quote -unquote newer armor that
he gets earlier on in the series to what he has
now Is the only difference a furry? undershirt
Pretty much what the harness is a little different,
but is that it? Yeah, pretty much. What was the
boy of that? I don't know Sound like we're trying
to sell his toys. I mean yet 2016 Masters Classics
Wait, I thought I thought it dies this year.
Well tactic well, they want to end everything
that I think they said it's gonna continue but
in what form They'll probably cut it back to
six figures for the entire year and charge it
three times as much as what they used to I really
do like this cover because it is multiple versions
of him. I think the version that's most to the
left, where him just standing up, I think that's
the current version of what we have in the comic
here, as far as the armor and everything else.
The crouching version at the bottom of it, right
above the direct sales UPC, I think that's the
version we had earlier in this series. Because
it's that Iron Man looking red stuff underneath
him. Yeah. He -Man is not Iron Man. Yeah, I'm
noticing what he has on now, colors aside, is
pretty much a mix between the classic and new
adventures. If you look at those pants. Yeah,
that's very true. Alright, so we open this one
up and it is them making their way through the
village and obviously battling as they go. We
have You know he man says I don't even know what
the freight zone does I do What don't look at
me like that of course I know hordak raised me
as his own daughter He trained me to be the chief
killer his force captain that see that's what
this needed it needed the force captain title
so they uh... basically uh... she tells him about
the freight zone how it's consuming the planet
and uh... they've got to get to this boat get
to the vault get to the vault It's not the same
as gets in a chopper. It doesn't roll off the
tongue as much Yeah, so they're going through
what used to be this town which is now kind of
fright zonish because like you said you know
the fright zones are terraforming the planet
and they see all these animals and they see a
winged unicorn Like that's not obvious The only
thing That was it's the one thing I'm gonna complain
about with this storyline. Yeah, I wish no I
like it. I think it's cool I think it adds something
to this version, but I wish they would have pulled
it pulled a better homage and I wish they would
have had him as Spirit first right I would have
saved it for the transformation sequence and
then say yeah and save it for the transformation
because it would have made it even more powerful,
just as powerful as it was in the Secret of the
Sword film. Every time I see it, it's like, oh,
the world has become like a dangerous place for
unicorns. Thundercats, anyone know? No? Episode
6, Terror of Hammerhand? Yes. You know. And,
um... I don't normally do this, folks. I did
it in the very beginnings of the pullback in,
like, year one. There are times where I have
to complain about the ads. So we're gonna take
a little break here and complain about the ad
between these two pages because whoever the hell
DC has working for them last year, um... A new
monthly... I'm not even reading the top yet.
A new monthly series. Tim Seely, Tom King...
McHale Jane in July 2014. This is Grayson You
think you know Nightwing you don't know dick
like I'm not kidding. I Not kidding and that
that was even in the solicitations for the first
issue You think you know Nightwing you don't
know dick and it just It makes me laugh and it
makes me cringe all at the same time and they
wonder why they're numbers are dropping yeah
so Adam cannot stand this whole you know stuff
in you know all these animals trapped and all
the huge all these citizens trapped and just
a grave injustice yes and you know by the power
of race go I have the power you know this loses
a lot of points for me because it and it This
is a nitpick, folks. I understand. I'm going
to nitpick this, but this is not my transformation.
When they do the double transformation later,
when she finally becomes She -Ra, that's not
my transformation. It just looks so... Those
swords are just horrible. Yeah, yeah, they're...
And it my bag. Well, this brings up the question...
Is he just calling the power? Has he been Adam
the entire time and they're kind of older in
this story? Or has he been walking around as
He -Man? He's been walking around in the armor
because you can see, like, it's not like he has
a maroon jacket and purple pants with white fluffy
purple boots. I mean, you know, if you look at
him, yeah, he is. When he says, all these attorneys
will die then. in the Fright Zone chambers, their
souls eaten. Yes, but if you look at him in that
panel, he's wearing the He -Man costume that
we've seen this entire time. So I assume by the
power of Grayskull Eye of the Power is just so
he can gain a... They're basically making the
power sword in this issue and this series at
this point. They're basically making it Mjolnir.
A electrified version of Mjolnir, because that's
all it is. I mean, I don't know. It just, I don't
know. So they go to town, and I do love, I do
love Adora's reaction to the infusion of power,
and she's like, whoa. And the internal monologue
said, he is like a majestic god, a savior, as
he and Battle Cat are just destroying these horde
troopers. Free the prisoners So she snaps out
of her thing and she says everybody run I said
run Run attorneys run and You know so she she
names the the winged unicorn swift wind Which
it's a nice nod, but again. I wish as we already
said I wish it was more Surprised and not so
tongue -in -cheek. You're free now take to the
swift winds and get away And he man decrees that
everybody you know run for the hills you'll be
safe there The hell says run for the hills iron
maiden one And then battle cat has to do, you
know Has to encourage them with emphasis by growling
at them. I thought that was hilarious And Adora
says well, that was a hell of a thing. It was
necessary So they are let's see here what's happening
So they get caught in another fright zone uprising
terraforming kind of thing and And lo and behold,
Swift Wind has to come in and save the day. I
kind of like this shot of, you know, where He
-Man basically turns the tables on, or no, he
says it again, you certainly have a way with
animals. I kind of like this shot, even though
she's not in her sheer regard, but kind of reminds
me of when they were riding on Swift Wind in
the movie. And then a giant snakehead with Tila
appears in the sky. Fly on, friends, fly on true,
and what gar awaits you. Is she actually talking
to them, or is that kind of her inner monologue
getting the point across as she's watching over
them? No, because they see, because she... Not
Christ Adora says what's happening? Is it a storm?
No the sorceress so no they see her That's not
for us. They see her and then as they're flying
on to and want gar we see giant red eyes and
Next hunted circle square triangle It's like
we're playing with the old PlayStation controller
The only thing that's missing is an X. I'll just
mash them all. Yeah. Issue 15, final thoughts?
I like where we're going now. Let's bring on
me some traclops. Were you gonna say some sexclops?
I don't even know what that would be. I am the
creeping sexclops. Yep. Oh, man. Alright, so
issue 16. He -Man and the Masters of the Universe.
This might be my favorite cover of all of them
out of this arc because it is it's basically
a wanted poster. Wanted. He -Man and the Masters
of the Universe. Twins of Power. He -Man. Adora.
Reward. Wanted for rebellion against Lord Hordak.
Known Accomplices. Abnett, Mahan, and Roberts.
He -Man and Adora must be stopped before the
origin of She -Ra continues. Now, where did these
guys get a chance to get photos of them looking
so pouty? They have headshots on them at all
times. Well, he does have triclops. I mean, he
does have three cameras. Plus, he used to, not
in this series, but in the cartoon series, he
didn't even make... No, yeah. In the 2002 series,
he had those doom gazers. You know, not being
literal. No, I know you're not being literal.
I'm just saying that that's what it could be,
but I love this wanted poster. The only other
wanted poster I've seen in comics that makes
this one go to shame is the grim fairy tales
Robin Hood wanted, where it's her picture. It's
a female Robin Hood. It's a new take on Robin
Hood. I have yet to read that series. I want
to so badly. Yeah, but this cover is amazing
it really really is Because where his his Helmet
his headdress his hats. I guess I don't know
it's basically ripping through the poster and
how this cover is designed is You basically have
hit him ripping through the he man of the Masters
universe logo. That's amazing So we start off
with You know easy Swift win easy now He's spooked
he man. He's not the only one the island of Anwar
gar is a haunted place There's a presence here
something evil And at this point they're more
so on a search there anything else because Swift
win Eventually runs off because he gets spooked
again but it's basically a conversation piece
until we get to triclops i mean they they meet
the gar people and swiftwin runs off and uh you
know uh they mention the witch and he man's like
witch what witch which which is yeah which which
is which uh um you know um And I like this. I
think it's great that He -Man is going to the
guard people and trying to, you know, make, uh,
you know, peace with them. Although, as we'll
come to find out in this issue, sadly they've
already made a deal with the devil, because his
wine is spiked. Again. Again. So, they, among,
you know, like on their chest, on their face,
they have, uh, this red painting which looks
like the classic like if you want to call the
iron cross thing that Hima has on his his chest
piece so like what's the they were cast out but
they still want to be part of Eternia so they
kind of have loyalty to the once former king
or I was a little confused by that yeah I think
it's kind of like the scarlet letter maybe I
don't know We see I'm trying folks not to call
her Shira It's so hard seeing her with Swifty
in this in this in this way, so she finds the
horse and she hears whispering around all around
her and she thinks it's just her imagination
and we see all that and and then we see this
apparition with her and You know the ghost arises
And we see where the ghost of King Grayskull
of all people You know any points at the sword
and and There's blood on the sword now, and what
does this mean? What are you telling me? He means
like it's been too long going after a door What
do you What do you think of her her little vision
quest there? It was bound to happen very long
time thinking Oh, why won't you tell anything
my throat has been slit. How do you expect me
to talk? and the guard people basically fool
He -Man into thinking that, um, our men have
found her. She has been brought to the temple
there, Adora. Adora, there's no one here. Wrong.
I am Triclops. He looks good. Yeah, I mean, it's
a pretty, pretty much a 2000X look. Mm -hmm.
Which wasn't a bad redesign, so I'm fine with
it. Yeah. I love what they do with his eyeball
there on the next page Or he man's inside of
his eyeball. I thought that was absolutely hilarious.
It was great and basically we get to what I was
saying earlier where he says oh well, I made
it I came yesterday and made a deal with them
and Basically says that he is there for the blood
of Grayskull and he is there for He -Man's blood
and we get to the next page and If Hordak wants
He -Man's blood he most certainly can he can
most certainly have it and Adora kills He -Man.
What the huh? I mean, I know it's it's basically
repeating the past from when Sarn did it and
then I wish they would have called the next story
of this but they tease it with next the secret
of the sword what'd you think of this one brutal
brutal ending i wasn't expecting you know him
to get his throat cut again or a grayskull to
get his throat cut again yeah it's It is so crazy.
I'm loving this storyline. Everything about it,
there's nothing in here so far that has made
me cringe. There's nothing in here that just
makes me put the book down. It's very well done
storytelling. Yeah, I'm reading it issue, issue,
issue rather than issue, wait a month issue.
I feel if I were to read these as they were released,
it would have Wouldn't have gotten the same feeling
about it. This seems like it would be it would
be more beneficial if it was a collected volume
Yeah They'll go that route eventually. I mean
it's DC. They always put that stuff out, but
I just I mean we're come we're we're coming up
on we were at the time when we Originally started
to plan this episode coming up on the time where
eternity war was gonna start so I wanted us to
finish this before eternity war got too far in
and at this point eternity war has only had the
first issue come out the second issue comes out
i think the 28th of january i think i don't know
um so issue 17 has um uh the title on the cover
is under the sorceress's spell we have adora
pretty much in her classic adora outfit with
the Cursed Sword, we got He -Man there, and Tila
as the Sorceress, um... and it still bugs me.
As much as I don't really care for Tila in most
incarnations, it just bugs me that they've made
her the snake goddess in this... I don't know.
I'm over it, but... Were you expecting her to
become the Sorceress, or...? Yeah, I was expecting,
like, you know, following her mother's footsteps,
but... That's not what happened. So we still
have a Snake man at some point so she could always
evolve Yeah, true So we open up with with where
we left off and he man is dead His throat is
cut he slaps over like really sis really And
You know Triclops goes on to say I knew what
I or she said Dora says I knew what I was doing
this ancient blaze Sharp enough to cut through
even his enhanced skin you seem surprised by
your actions Adora. I imagine he man was too
You know so they go back and forth back and forth
and Come to find out that Kordak is not gonna
keep his his word and and the gar are betrayed
again Did you really expect otherwise? No, not
at all. I do love that we get a shot of the Roton
again. Oh yeah, the Roton! Thank you! I wish
you would... I want you to go... I'll have to
give you the link, but um... I want you to currently
go over to GeekAssRatio .com, look at Powers
of Grayskull episode 38, and comment on that
and let Kevin know what the hell to do. We can
never... because we've seen it several times
that were in the middle of season two of of filmation
he and on on the review show powers of grayskull
tales of attorney and we can never think of the
content name of the vehicle is that the use of
like twice already i'm like oh yeah the road
time that's right that works uh... the only thing
that this series to this point and i will get
it in the lion king issue at the end of this
podcast but uh... It's missing a lot of Sky Sleds.
I miss Sky Sleds. Well, Sky Sleds were more used
in a more civilized time before the Dark Time,
before the Horn. So, overcome by grief and guilt
and thinking that she can never get Adam back,
she threatens to kill herself until the Sorceress
appears. you know, Tila appears and she tells
her the story that the cursed sword was the blade
used to kill King Grayskull and she's basically
putting her on the path to where Sarn was but
except she, Adora, is actually the chosen one.
She is the heir for the Sword of Protection and
she tells her this whole backstory of we basically
pick up after the events of issue 13. of Grayskull
being killed this is before Sarn this had to
have been before she was in the jungle in issue
14 because it shows her standing there and the
blood goes on and reveals this hidden chamber
you know the chamber of eternity so this has
to have been for Sarn before she was running
in the woods And she finds the Sword of Protection.
And it is as it should be, except it's a little
bit too much toy accurate for me. Red jewel my
ass. Would you like a purple jewel? Or a teal
jewel? How about a pink jewel? I want it to look
like how it looked in the damn movie. So we get
this story of Sauron and Tila says... This must
be destiny Sarn tells herself. This must be righteous.
She now thinks only as a mother and Let's see
Sarn Flee's gray skull. She takes the sword and
hides it from everyone including Adi the traitor.
She will keep it secret. She will protect the
sword at all costs for child No act toward that
end will be too cruel. Well this reveals The
one page where it's, oh, you know, Adi's body
was never found and you basically see a cast
off snake man skin, which, you know, if you put
two and two together, that reveals a lot. And
then there's a shadowed shot of Hiro. And from
the description, it sounds like he or they do
say the lone surviving son of King Grayskull.
Right. Wasn't he like 500 years after him in
the original canon? Oh, I don't know. I don't
know. I'm not sure. All these people lived to
be very, very, very old, I think. So, you know,
Sarn was never located, but what of the Sword
of Protection? What of the Second Sword? No one
ever knew even to look for it. Saren still has
it still. Cursed by the blood she had spilled,
Saren became an immortal monster, the fabled
witch of Anwotgar. So Adora has her mission.
She goes out to look for the witch, but she pretty
much tells Tila off and is like, look, we're
done. Because you basically used me. Which is
an interesting angle to take for the two of them.
Yeah, the way these things work. Oh, you know
she'll get these powers. She'll come to her senses.
They'll They'll cast this fight into the pits
of eternity and all will be forgiven Yep So we
get We get to Sarn's cave and I got some beautiful
shots down here because she puts her to spar
a mask back on Because she thinks that you know
Wearing a Halloween costume is gonna scare a
thousand year old witch Hey, if I was wearing
a Kim Kardashian Halloween costume, I'd probably
scare the crap out of a lot of people Okay, I
don't know where to go from there folks Wow You
mean she she she is wearing a costume. Really?
I thought that was her everyday look so she sees
the sword and we see the sword and we also see
Sarn and Sarn is not going to um let her take
it and it ends with the witch the witch for my
dreams dun dun dun once again i'm loving this
it's great we went through all that hell of the
what lies within arc to get to the good stuff
with blood of greyskull I think the the series
as a whole had been kind of Iffy which I know
a lot of die -hard Masters fans after an issue
or two or like this. I can't do this I'm just
gonna stop reading it, but this this is really
starting to pick up It is it's too bad that it's
pretty much I mean Eternity war is a pickup basically.
Okay folks when we start talking about issue
18 here in a moment I actually take a quick break
here in a minute, but When we come back and talk
about issue 18 specifically, this series for
me ends with issue 18 because Eternity War picks
up, Eternity War number one picks up pretty much
right where this left off. It basically ignores
what I'm calling and what a couple of my other
friends online are calling the Lion King issue
of Masters. ye come on dude homo jobby homo jobby
so we're going to take a quick break we're going
to come back and talk about issues 18 and 19
of He -Man and the Master's Universe from DC
Comics we'll be back after this I've never seen
so many liars something must be happening something
big we better get to Whispering Woods fast I
gotcha By the power of Grayskull! Alright folks,
we are back. Issue 18, He -Man and the Masters
of the Universe. An epic cover. And how? Uh oh,
are you saying you don't like this? Oh no no
no no, I do. I didn't notice it until right now,
but this is kind of the cover set up kind of
like one of the toy posters where you have all
the good guys on one side and the bad guys on
the other. I can't remember which one it was
for, but there's definitely a concept piece which
this mirrors pretty well. Oh, absolutely, absolutely.
Yeah, no, this cover is just simply amazing.
Absolutely love it. I think the one you are thinking
of was it? Yeah, I have that as actually yeah,
you're I don't know which one it was from but
it is one of the toy posters And this is it's
just epic you forget Castle gray skull the sorceress
orko Adam why Why is Adam and he man there at
the same time it's not like It's not like he
man is a hologram. It's it's not like you know
Adam pressed an earring and said hello synergy
or anything like that it Why is that I'm standing
there pulling the sword like it just is so I'd
like it It's I like the cover overall, but that's
just weird to me. I Don't know what to make of
that Don't know either the title on the cover
here is she has the power because Shira is in
the middle of the two sides and I think is this
the only time in this series we've ever seen
pan Thor I've On the cover because like we have
Skeletor hasn't really been seen other than the
DC one Yeah, I mean well that well that's where
he was I mean that's after the whole thing in
the 2012 miniseries wore off He went to earth,
but like even in that. I don't remember seeing
panther But no, it's great triclops is there
I believe Trap yeah Evil in a rotan with beast
man on it. I think yep, and then snake man looks
absolutely epic So, we pick up with this issue
with the fight between Sarn and Adora. The blood
of Grayskull will spill again this day! What
I'm really digging about this witch design for
her, you know, she's got this one decomposed
golden skeleton hand, which I'm assuming is the
hand that she... Slash Grayskull's throat with
and it's kind of like the cursed hand of Grayskull.
Yeah Yeah, it looks absolutely awesome So they
go back and forth back and forth in this in this
battle and You know, you know She's basically
cuz Sauron's really really old. She's a thousand
years old and You know, she basically says, he
man, he abandoned you. Grayskull abandoned you.
They lied to you. They are corrupt. She's still
going under Adi's belief that the whole line
of Grayskull is corrupt, which is so not cool.
She cray cray. Yeah, pretty much. So... This
battle goes on and on and I love my I love pops
art in this it's so great the dark backgrounds
compared to the their designs oh, man, it's so
awesome and Sarn in the process of ripping Adora's
mask off actually rips off her locket and You
know monster give it back and this kind of gives
the door of the fire to kind of beat Sarnan kind
of pretty much get the sword away from her and
she basically says nobody chooses my destiny,
but me which and I choose gray skull well this
this is a new development because the sword starts
to glow and She says it again the cursed sword
evaporates pretty much And, you know, once she
says that and Sarn's on fire in the background,
we have an upgraded Sword of Protection. Once
again, I'm sorry, Pop, I do love your art, man.
I love the way you do the classic power swords,
but Jesus Christ, these upgraded swords are horrible.
They look like ornate letter openers. They do.
Very much so. And, you know, it says, uh, and
Adora says the words as though she has said them
countless times before. For the honor of Grayskull.
And, you know, I am She -Ra! And... And... That
armor is... I honestly think, and I don't know
if this is Mattel's thing... But if you look
at the journey we've taken between the 2012 miniseries
and now, 2012 miniseries, Tila was in a golden
bikini for crap's sake. In the beginning of this
ongoing series in 2013, He -Man showed more skin
on his chest and arms and everything else, and
now it's like they've gone all conservative with
him. And they want every orifice to be covered
up I'm not complaining about it. I just find
it absolutely hilarious Well, she's not a character
that needs to be scantily No No, not necessarily,
but I Mean, you know comparing her to her filmation
design. Come on now the filmation I mean that
skirt when she's holding, you know, oh, I'm just
a friend. Hi he man, you know, it's like What
I find most interesting, and the only reason
why I assume that Keldor is Sarn's son, is of
how she dies. I perish, but my son will live
on. It isn't even those words. It's the design
after she's gone. It's pretty much Skeletor.
Well, yeah, her face, the skeleton remains of
her skull is yellow, but then she's got this
pool of blood around her hand which shows the
reflection of Skeletor. Absolutely So he man
is still dead She was like, oh my god, am I in
time? This is the scene I was gonna talk about
earlier that I wish was a little bit different
I wish it wasn't the sword like I understand
it's the sword of protection but when swift wind
got hit in the movie and i know this isn't the
movie folks i get it trust me you know she basically
just put her hands on him and said the words
for the honor of greyskull you know and he man's
like sheera look your hands they're glowing i
wish we had asked the sorceress about more about
your powers you know it's one of the like i wish
there was a little bit more reference in this
um but he man comes back to life And we get the
by the power of grayskull Double untundra of
You know, I have the power Where's battle cat?
That's not he was leading the um the people from
the town to wherever they need to be that's true,
but usually when the most of the time when the
powers the The power transformation, you know
battle cats usually I only reason why I really
ask is because it would have been cool if it
was Swift win and battle cat being there But
if she's got the power now, you know, he Swift
wins missing the the straddle and the mask, uh
-huh He's missing everything except the wings
and the horn and by the power of Grayskull basically
brings down this this terraformed freight zone
uh... and uh... and so it's pretty much destroyed
uh... so horax menace falls so it does brother
so it does uh... you know she's consoling swiftwind
and uh... You know he tells he man tells the
gar people get up rise. You truly are a broken
people I will no longer permit darkness to rule
over and what gar or attorney it ends now You
know and she says you never change brother you
on the other hand something tells me we have
a lot to talk about yeah the Eternia universe
I guess is so used to magic at this point. You
know he wakes up. Oh, okay. This doesn't faze
me at all Alright, I was kind of expecting it
anyway And it's so we I guess triclops had to
work for somebody since Skeletor is not around
but it just it's super weird to me that that
this is You know what triclops is doing? He's
working for Hordak and the epilogue here in this
issue is at Castle Grayskull. I love this shot
Which it looks like a giant Hordak face and now
it's not even the castle we used to know twisted
and evil yeah very much so and there's an even
better shot of this in the eternity war number
one and you know all pretty much all of the the
evil hoarder well at least be not be so no yeah
all everybody's there it's a man tana and just
a man tana and leech Leech, but we got grizzlore
catra Dragster and scorpion Dragster this one
I never knew Well when I took a look at the the
tiny shot where the rotons coming in and triclops
is getting off you see Grizzlore and you know,
you see the little bit of green. Oh, is that
leech behind him? Well, no, he's got this this
snake head on his back, which I guess he's using
as a backpack or an armor piece for his back,
which I just, it came upon me. Oh wait, that's
the snake hand puppet from the Fright Zone play
set. Right, right, yeah. So it ends with Triclops
saying, you know, hey, I have, you know, I've
got the blood and... Hordex says I have everything
I needed at long last a means to escape despondos
and thus the ability to break the secrets of
castle grayskull and claim The power of grayskull
once and for all next prelude to eternity war
Where's the snorting when you need it? Yeah,
true May he rest in peace George de senso We're
getting to that age. I know, right? Issue 18,
what'd you think? I'm totally fine with this
new She -Ra outfit. The cover is probably where
I like this new design for the sword the best.
I'm not a huge fan of it, but I guess because
it's painted, it imbues that very Crystal Castle
look to it. Oh, absolutely, yeah. And looks a
little... more properly sized yeah absolutely
um absolutely issue 18 for me absolutely awesome
this is where i consider the series to be ended
because the next the final issue of the on 2013
ongoing which has ended and has now become he
manned the eternity war issue 19 is by david
Darinic and Roberts. Rob David, I think it's
Tom Darinic and Mark Roberts, I believe. I'm
not looking at the inside just yet. But the cover
is Skeletor, Adam, and Randor. Put three lion
heads on these characters and you got Scar, Simba,
and Mufasa. Yeah, pretty much. And prelude to
the eternity or this basically takes place 12
years ago now I Hate when they futz with time.
I really do Because in the 2012 miniseries we
were stuck in a time of where or wherever the
hell and skeleton that spell on us and then we
fast forward and We now have you know this and
it's like 12 years ago. It doesn't seem like
he man is that young to where he would be this
young now It just I don't know. Well, yeah this
now that I go back to the the mini series it's
He he doesn't he doesn't get In this issue. He
doesn't really get he doesn't get the the gray
skull powers But the way the story is running
it seems like in Like, at least in the 2000X
series, that's pretty much where He -Man starts.
But here it doesn't, and then I guess in the
mini -series he gets the powers, or he gets them
back, and yeah. See, I think that because in
this issue, Sorceress says, you know, you will
have a great power later, but for now I'll give
you the power you need to save your father. I
think this issue, since this says 12 years ago,
I think this takes place right before Skeletor
put the spell. I think this takes place right
before the 2012 miniseries. It has to. Because
as you said, he doesn't have the power of Grayskull
already. So, we open this one up, and we, you
know, just in time, reinforcements, and, you
know, he sees Zor, the symbol of the Falcon,
and... We hear internal monologue for Adam and
he says things are moving fast are moving so
fast and I am powerless to stop it and then I
see it a Falcon the totem of Zor and suddenly
I feel there's hope that everything might one
day be as right as it was this morning We're
I love you. I don't love you. I was gonna say
thank God. This isn't pop maha because he I hope
to God he would never do this This is just creepy
folks I was like, yeah, 12 -year -olds are stringy,
but I don't remember them looking this stringy.
And their hands are huge! She's got man hands,
dude. Where's Jerry Seinfeld when you really
need him, right? The man hands! The man hands!
Um, I'm sorry, folks. As much as I don't mind
Adam and Tila having... a relationship when they're
in their 20s or 30s as whatever age they are
here just looks so wrong. Well you flip the page
and it's it was just a dare. I know but it's
just one of those things where the image of it
just is just looks so wrong. Well it's not like
he's 20 and she's 12 then we would have an issue.
Yeah true um but uh So, you know they go on and
on about the dare and whatever else You know
and we see We see that he's bowing in the street
to her and he's about to get run over by a very
upgraded looking attack track. Yeah Click across
between the formation one in the toy Yeah, I
wish it was a little bit more formation Like
I wish as it rolled that the things That always
made track so awesome. So, you know, we meet
man at arms here. We meet man at arms here. Well,
at this point, I guess she just started the Academy
and she took it upon herself to entrust Adam's
safety to her. Yeah. On the next page we see
a great shot of Stratos and Buzz Off. Looking
more like Stratos than we've gotten so far. Oh
god yes. Absolutely. Looks so good. And we get
a shot of the classic palace almost. At the bottom
there on that panel. Which is really really cool.
Oh, interesting. I did not notice that in that
cover. Okay. Anyway, sorry, folks. You've never
shown an interest in state affairs before. I
know, Father, but I wish to accompany your men
to Avion to observe so I can learn. No, absolutely
not. You're just a boy. And I'm sorry, folks,
Randor still looks like the Burger King. Oh,
yeah, big time. Let me just say I'm not a huge
fan of Keldor without the mustache At first I
thought it was Kronos Yeah, that was his name
right? Yeah, yeah, yeah at first I thought it
was him and you know and and He's basically saying
to randor grayskull is a myth randor a fairy
tale told to inspire young warriors Could you
tell folks this issue is boring Sorry folks,
it's filler Yeah, this is very much filler and
as I said, this is very much lion king ish because
Adam and Keldor go off and Keldor basically talks
him into going after these you know going after
watching this battle and He The only cool thing
in this issue I'll say is I finally got my wish
even though it's Adam. He's on a sky sled. That's
great That is awesome, I think the only thing
that really ties us in is we do get the explanation
of Keldor's lineage right right so we find out
you know we go to back to Randor and Keldor says
oh well he's he's gone he's he's gone after the
battle and And you know, he, you know, Keldor
basically says to Randor, look, go after him.
Go save your son. I can, you know, and then he
says, and then Randor says, okay, we'll take
my seat here. And of course he's going to go
overboard here. Cause to the king. Yes, to the
king and the mighty, the destroyer, King Keldor.
And yeah, they burned off or? Yeah, I... It's
a fairly graphic shot of all the people at the
table and half of their faces have been burnt
off. Yeah, pretty much. A most excellent vintage
Miss Lin. Eva Lin does not look like Eva Lin
here. That's horrible. Well, she looks like how
she's been depicted in this series so far. Yeah,
still I don't like it. And so it begins. So Beastman
knocks off Adam off his sky sled and Adam is
basically trapped and we see the Wind Raider!
Yay, the Wind Raider! An upgraded Wind Raider
because the Wind Raider I know never had an actual
closed cockpit and never could hold more than
four people at one time. It looks like there's
five people in that thing. I like it. I think
it's awesome. It goes crashing down. And let's
see here it goes crashing down, and he wants
to say Adam wants to go save his father and You
know we got beast man. You know going after him,
and he's like dad. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry
I don't please get safe. No. I won't leave you
father. I will never leave you I can save you
And then we get the sorceress and zodiac well
we will yeah, yeah, so on this page up He's got
a strained old man face as he's trying to lift
this thing off of him. It's like he's aged a
thousand years. He looks like a feeble old Vader
from the original version of Star Wars Episode
IV. He is tapped into the power of eternity.
Now you see why I called you here. So we get
the Sorceress in Zodak and this is our Sorceress.
This is not Tila because obviously Tila is still
a kid in this issue. She looks good. She's designed...
It's basically her and battle cat are the only
characters who haven't been altered at all. Yeah,
and then I don't know what well Cat has been
altered because it doesn't seem like he, in this
entire series run, and I don't even know about,
obviously, Eternity War, as I've said throughout
this whole podcast, I only have one issue to
this point, he doesn't seem to have the cringer
personality. It's just Battle Cat. I mean, like,
the design to the armor and... Yeah, that's true.
What are your thoughts on the... I guess how
they slightly re -imagine Zodak? I like it. I
like it. He looks like he, I mean, he looks like
he has no nipples. Well, it's he he's part original
Zodiac and part 2002. I was going to say not
eternity. Is it infinity for Dr. Strange? Yeah,
yeah, I think so. Yeah, no, he looks good. I
like him. Zodiac has never been really one of
my favorites. I mean, I mean, I like how he how
he interacts with. with everybody but like as
far as design it's just not my thing i mean i
like i like it it's fine but i have no real um
connection to him at all he's a bit of an ass
in the scene considering some of the things that
he says yes yes very much so um so the final
page here is we have uh the sorceress in time
I will grant you the key to unlock your greatest
power young prince, but for now power enough
to save your father She kisses him she vanishes.
He still looks like an old man and I have The
title of the story is stuck in a moment which
cuts back to the first page of the issue. Yeah
the power Lion King for Motu That's all I can
say. It just... I don't know, dude. I wish that
they had done something else. A different way
of telling that story that didn't have it come
off so Lion King -ish. I mean, the only thing
we're missing is, you know, Timun and Pumbaa
and Hakuna Matata. The issue as a whole doesn't
really accomplish anything. No No All right,
so really quickly before we get out of here folks
because I know it's been a long record for us
Issues 13 through 18 the blood of greyskull and
pray little 13 is prelude to the blogger issues
the the entire story arc for blood of greyskull
I'm giving it a five out of five stars. It was
amazing What about you? I'll give it a four point
five out of five. No comic is perfect except
for a couple but this is such a vast improvement
of what we've been given up to this point absolutely
um and issue 19 the lion king issue i give it
a two just for a couple of the vehicles designs
and stuff like that i mean just the story just
it's very souring Thankfully, Eternity War washes
out the bad taste in our mouths again. I don't
know if you've read issue one yet, but it was
pretty damn good. I look forward to it. Alright,
where can the people find you online, sir? I
guess the most easy way to find me is on Facebook
under A .Dosbaran. Twitter at A .Dosbaran. I
try to update that when I can. Liar! When I can.
I don't want to contain my words to 144 characters.
I would say at adosparan .com, where my yearly
subscription thing went up, so we just have to
renew it. So it'll be up shortly again. Cool,
cool. uh... to close out january joe reid and
