The Pull Bag
Kennel Block Blues #3-4 Review

About this Episode
Hot damn, I'm Ryan Ferrier, and you're listening
to The Pull Bag, only on the GeekCast Radio Network.
Hello everyone, TFG1Mike here from the GeekCast
Radio Network, and here inside The Pull Bag,
we always strive to have the best audio quality
that we can. Over the last couple of weeks, I've
been having issues with my computer. It's a long,
drawn -out story. I will put a link to my YouTube
rant about the whole thing in the post, but...
I, by the time Nicole and I finished and recorded
this episode coming up back at you Classics episode
73 for Kennel Block Blues number three and four,
I thought I had the audio issues fixed. As I'm
going to edit the podcast, Nicole sounds like
she has an echo effect on her. Now, I did not
do this. I don't know how the hell this happened.
I've spent the last day and a half trying to
fix it. Hence why the pull bag is being released
a little bit late this week, but no clue So the
first part of the podcast the first 30 minutes
or so Nicole sounds like she's an avenging angel
Which would have made more sense on our hot damn
episode from last week, but um I'm sorry. I tried
my best I spent the day and a half trying to
fix it, so it's not like I didn't try to fix
it. I tried every audio trick I have at my disposal,
and I just could not get her voice to sound normal.
I mean, her voice sounds normal, it's just there
seems like there's an echo effect behind it.
You know, like she's talking like this kind of
thing, but it echoes, echoes, echoes. Anyway,
The Pull Bag, Bag Issue Classics, episode 73
from Bag Issue Classics, coming up here. Only
on the geek cast radio network. That's not helping.
Hello and welcome to the pull bags baggage you
classics. This is episode 73 for baggage you
classics. I'm of course TF2 and Mike and Joining
me is Nicole Beatles diva. I found love in hillsdorm
It sucks, okay? If we're all you Apple lovers
out there, I'm sorry. But according to Mike,
Windows sucks too. So what do we need? We need
a third party computer company. We need help.
I think the only other option is Linux. Are you
kidding me? Linux is like the... Ex -parolee
that got lost to the system. Talk about a prison
break. I see what you did, though. Except sadly,
Linux does not have the support of Wentworth
Miller. If you're a Linux user... What? Oh crap.
All right, folks. We are here to talk about comics.
This is the second time, thankfully it's working
this time, the second time that we're recording
this episode. We tried to record it the first
time, but all the equipment decided to just say,
what's your major malfunction? Essentially is
what it did between my computer, between her
iPod, all that stuff. Last week I... nearly blew
a blood vessel because come to find out the wind
Windows 10 anniversary update basically said
screw you we're putting all your audio settings
back to default they essentially factory reset
the shit which is stupid as hell so yeah friggin
Bill Gates anyway we're here to have fun we're
here to be talking about Yes We're here to wrap
up. We're supposed to do this a while ago We're
here to talk about the final two issues of boom
studios kennel block blues written by Ryan Ferrier
Art by Daniel blayless or Bayless Yeah, Bayless.
Sorry about that Daniel Also on the team here
is Adam Metcalf for the colors letters done by
Colin Bell But yeah, we're going back to Jackson
kennel and Oliver and All that stuff once again
if you heard our episode last week on the pullback
when Nicole and I talked about issues four and
five of hot damn I had to go back to issue two
to figure out what the hell even happened for
kennel block blues just like I had to go back
Yeah, yeah it has So this one starts off with
another singing dream sequence, I assume Yeah,
they are so very happy and then reality sets
in sadly I Do love this This whole opening here
with the with the page and the panels and how
it then if you're if you're using Comixology
and use the guided view, you know the other giant
splash page where Last time we talked to you
guys folks about this this series issues one
and two we did not want to spoil What was going
on at the end of issue two? But I think this
series has been over long enough to the point
where we can say that at the end of issue two
The giant ghost dog was... Chester. Chester,
thank you. Yeah, so, giant ghost dog, yay. So,
we get back to reality and it's... I just re
-read this. You just read this! I know! I just
really read these issues folks and I can't even
remember I'm so ready to Yeah, the computer issues
are just like taking over my mind here Because
I keep wanting to call her Sally, but that's
Well, we'll talk about Sally and Dave and all
that stuff at the end of this show but but yeah
sugar She and the the other Cellmate here are
she's doing push -ups. I assume Yeah And and
then the old blind dog goes over here Dogs and
cats living together mass hysteria, that's all
we need So you have the old blind cat is walking
through the through the prison yard and he goes
up to The One of the other prisoners and oh that's
right the the other one You need to start Are
you talking about the rabbits? The injured ones?
Yeah, okay, Peter the rabbit, okay, yeah. A bumple.
Yeah, yeah, bumple. He's not doing so good. He's
on his deathbed there. This really kind of teared
me up a little bit because, poor Charlie. He
is like the really lost soul in this prison and
he has his best friend dying in front of him.
He's trying so hard to help and he's like, I'm
not leaving his side. Yeah, because normally
Charlie is that dog that in the first two issues
he was super happy -go -lucky. He kind of reminded
me of Michelangelo a little bit. Because Mikey's
always that upbeat, everything's positive, always
looks on the bright side of things. And seeing
Charlie sad and kind of depressed over his friend's
status here is very touching and moving, and
it's very well done. so we go over to the cats
and And they are two gals Yeah, I can never say
her name right and Chloe and Chloe there, you
know the bodyguards And the old blind cat wants
to get in and You know They basically want everything
that Pickles has because everyone else in the
prison has nothing. He's got everything. Okay,
there's another panel that kind of reminded me
of what you just did this week. You got so upset,
he tore up his favorite little catnip toy. Yeah,
no. No, no, no, no, no. I've gone nuts, but you
know I I don't even have any toys to rip up anymore,
so that's long gone So frisky goes back to where
sugar is and You know he's basically informing
on on what's what what pickles is doing and and
whatever else and Basically, he gives her a couple
of... I don't think they're sugar cubes, but...
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar. Sugar's getting sugar.
Sugar's getting sugar mm -hmm oh it was um it
was Cosmo that's who the big yeah okay yeah that's
so Charlie's you're not sure Oliver is seeing
a big giant Cosmo here and I like the juxtaposition
of this but I just prefer I just like it better
when Cosmo was actually alive. I miss it too.
And we see that Oliver is... We see his kind
of his origin story a little bit here. Damn you
Ryan, this is the second time this issue you're
gonna make me cry. Because, man, you're thinking,
Ollie, oh, Ollie's a good boy, you know? Because
you always hear, Ollie's a good boy. Well, you
know, that's what sugar does, so. Man, story
really got to me. It's just like, I really hated
the humans. I really hated the humans after his
story was finally told. I'm like, people are
such assholes. People are such assholes. Yep,
they can be and You know we have this really
nice exchange between Cosmo and and Ollie and
just Cosmo telling him You know that you know
he's been around. You know he knows that look
and You know he's he's all of her is basically
telling him hey the story is done and and Cosmo
saying hey, no look you got a Kind of get the
hell out of here doing well But I mean, what
would you do? Would you trust your inner instincts?
Or would you feel like you're hallucinating to
see your dead friend telling you you need to
get out? I mean... Your mind's playing tricks
on you. Oh, I am so bad, folks. Because Oliver
is Megatron. And Cosmo is Starscream. So we go
back to Flippers and Charlie and Flippers is
is basically he's gonna be gone Flipper Flipper
names are important. Oh flipper. It is flubber.
It's a you it's a The you and the I are right
next to the key right next to each other on the
keyboard Yeah, so fluppers. I just... I lost
my shit, folks. This is a hard issue. I'm very
emotionally attached to animals, too. And you
know Charlie is basically saying please please
no don't don't flippers. Don't leave me. I can't
do this without you I'm not me without you because
they were best friends and I Think his name is
thigh, but I don't know The other cat I don't
know how you would say that but So fluppers does
pass away and this just it drives Charlie insane
with emotion and grief obviously And then these
two cats are are gonna bang on the door and Look
at you know pickles under these these blankets
and big daddy that Made himself out to be he's
cowering in the corner Yeah You know this is
so sad and I understand this is so sad but the
panel where he's saying where Where they say
the blind fool was right. We're dying. We're
coming in pickles. We've had enough No, no, you
cannot I swear that Scrooge McDuck waiting on
the on and then you know you see the next part
of the panel where he's like Are you a sad? I
swear that's that's Scrooge McDuck from Christmas
Carol Spirits come when Jiminy Cricket first
comes in yeah You're Aaron girls sent by And
they all look crazy But yeah, no, it's it's it's
really really good art like very very awesome
We get more of Allie's origin story. So that's
because, you know, you got Sugar going through
her little deal here, and then we go back to
Allie. Basically Cosmo forcing him to relive
his past. Which is really, really interesting.
Yeah, and just the the transition from what you
know, the panel was short with sugar To the flashback
just the color changes. That's one of the great
things about this, you know Blaylist's art along
with the colorists coloring and just oh man It's
such nice juxtaposition between each other. And
for a second there, I thought that was Teletubbies
on the TV. The panel where Ollie and the kid
are dancing. So we've got this origin story.
And again, we just see it. It'd go from being
really, really happy to being really, really
depressing. This really broke my heart. Again,
Ryan, damn you. It was rough. It was a rough
issue. It was rough. A rough issue. But I mean,
it was awesome. Very awesome. Yeah, yeah, it
was very very awesome and Ollie you know we go
back to being in in the kennel here and and Ollie
gets out and and Sugar sugar is not doing so
well She's uh she went through some major major
drama here. Oh anyways, I just gotta mention
at the very end of 3, the whole Looney Tunes
Lodge with Flappers there. That was really cool,
I loved that. Yeah. That was really cool, I loved
that. That was funny, yeah. I love what Sugar
says to Ollie, tell anyone and you're a chew
toy. And issue three ends here with You know
with them basically looking on to the the mess
hall area Where they've essentially gonna fight
their way out Issue three is just really, really
sad. It's like one of the saddest comics I've
ever read. You've already said it three times.
Damn you, Fer! So good, though. Like I said,
that back cover at the end of the issue. I love
it. Like I said, that back cover at the end of
the issue. I love it. Yeah. And that does that
like, oh man! And then it's interesting going
back and rereading these and just seeing what
happens in issue three and then comparing it
to everything that goes on in issue four to basically
bring us Happy ending sort of Well, you know,
we'll go through issue four in a second, but
just, you know, after issue three, even rereading
it, even going back and looking through it here,
it's like, wow, how are they going to fix this?
How are they going to? I mean, issue four, they
jam -packed it. I mean, I don't think anyone
has ever been able to put so much stuff in a
comic. Cuz I mean comics generally range from
you know, it's usually a 20 page story in a 40
page book, but with With Yeah Comicalities thankfully
the ads are at the back of the book not in the
middle unlike actual physical comics. Yeah But
it's one of those things where you know you get
20 22 pages worth of story and Like I said, I
don't think I've seen anyone cram as much into
those 22 pages as this one issue has. If you
folks haven't read Kennel Block Blues, you need
to go read it because it's awesome. It really
is awesome. Yep. So we open up issue four and
Sugar and Ollie are going to make a run for it
through all of these other cats and other people.
other animals and I Love the I love the two dogs
That one of them is whispering and he's like
passing. I just love this so hilarious. I thought
that was kind of funny As we go through here
we have the giant fight And we've got Ollie basically
Helping everybody to escape as possible, you
know as fast as possible and Cleo's just lost
it. She's She is just really really lost it she's
gone mad with power It's just so crazy I I'm
speaking this is typical cats. What are you thinking
so far after this first fight here? You know,
people, it's not just crazy cat ladies, it's
also crazy cats. No, this is like the pinnacle
fight that you would see in any story, the lunchroom
fight. you know a lot of things are going on
and you're just checking out the fight but you
gotta look very carefully what's going on with
the sidelines you know because there's something
that else is going on behind me why everyone's
playing their part with fighting what's going
on so what's the plan it's escape through diversion
is essentially is what it is So we've got all
of the other dogs that are with Ollie and sugar
and they are Basically gonna escape and It's
not just the dogs it's also the dog again dogs
and cats working together mass hysteria Yeah,
it's so basically what What we've been kind of
skipping over here is is that? One of pickles
is guards. I think it's Cleo. She went nuts She
took over because they broke into pickles his
little cell there and basically put him on the
rocks or whatever the hell and She took over
she went mad with power. So now it comes to the
point where the dogs and cats have to work together
And it isn't until they actually said his name
that I actually recognize Pickle because he looks
like a cross between Usagi Ujimbo and Master
Splinter at this point. Before he looked like,
what's his name from the movie Cats and Dogs?
What the hell was his name? Mr. Tinkles or whatever
the hell. You've never seen Cats and Dogs? So
hilarious. Anyway. So basically pickles and then
sugar agree that they will help each other To
kind of either escape or you know Stop Cleo from
He gets to divert the guards. The scary guards
away from everyone else. What better distraction
than to get naked? Yeah. Yeah, Charlie goes streaking
through the prison, and we have the guard hands.
Bet you can't catch Charlie. Oh my god. So hilarious.
Gotta run. Frisky, frisky, frisky. I love Charlie.
It's so hilarious. I love Charlie. Yeah, Charlie
is a... So Sugar and the dogs and the other cats
are all coming after Cleo. And Cleo's... hear
them out. We will hear nothing. You know, another
fight is going to ensue. But first, we have to
have a fight in songs. It's such a great way
to liven up such... This is getting pretty heavy.
I mean from that last issue onto this one. And
so this is an easy way to like break down that
heaviness that's on your chest right now. And
so this is an easy way to like break down that
heaviness that's on your chest right now. Yeah.
And this whole panel is just amazing. You got
Ollie in the center in a straight jacket and
a top hat. And then you got... Dogs and cats
three dogs three cats on either side of a mixed
in that are all in you know a top hat and tails
with Canes and late, you know, it's a full it's
gonna be a full chorus line here Because they're
gonna be breaking out of Jackson tonight And
again like I almost wish I know this is never
gonna happen, but I almost wish that the entire
series Was drawn and colored in his dream sequence
stuff because I just just Again, the juxtaposition
of art here is amazing folks, but the reality
of Jackson compared to his dream sequences That's
just dire art change it and I'm not saying it
to be negative about it But it's the truth you
look at the dream sequences. They look so happy
and fun and whatever else and then you go To
the part where where Cleo says why are they singing
stop just the whole the whole thing? It's just
so crazy So crazy good so more fight They're
trying to do their best to break out Let's see
here you know we've got uh... them well you know
at least at the breakout part and we still have
more of the fighting between sugar and cleo and
sugar almost trounces her till she's grabbed
by the throat and then uh... the guards come
out and uh... basically grab cleo so We don't
have to worry about Cleo anymore. Oh, that's
not Cleo. I can't... Okay, Cleo's the black cat.
We get more dream sequence. This is... Yeah,
this is Taibao. Taibao? Is that how you say your
name? Okay, so the other one's Theobot. Yeah,
this is Taibao. Taibao? Is that how you say your
name? I don't know. I don't know how to say that
name, but yeah. So either way, she gets creamed
by the guards. That's one thing still, I know
we're not to the end of the comment here yet
folks, but that's one thing still we never really
got an explanation of the whole guard thing.
That's one thing I'm wanting out of this. Because
we're also seeing back in the last issue, Ollie
was a normal dog that we see as a normal dog.
But they're picturing themselves as bipedal,
clothing -wearing animals, you know, like people.
So I think this is their way of picturing all
these things history of what the cards are like
this is their way of picturing always history
of what the card okay that that can work i'm
i'm all right with that explanation so sugar
gets back to ollie and first he's like uh...
yeah i'm not going anywhere He wants to he's
basically gonna sacrifice themselves You know
he's gonna sacrifice himself to save everybody
and all he doesn't want to let him do it and
sadly he does and You know we've got this really
really awesome fight between it isn't really
a fight but it's almost an escape scene of frisky
with the guards and again the art is just amazing
yeah this last scene with the guards it's really
creepy and I love it yeah it's very creepy and
they are all running and they're gonna escape
and you know of course Charlie is back to his
old happy -go -lucky looking self and and Pickles
basically says that you know he's not Not going
with him either. So he's gonna distract the guards
even more for them so they can escape and Again,
he's reformed the art pickles because he is now,
you know Mr. Miyo, yeah, he's well, he's reformed
but his design I Mentioned earlier across between
you saw you Jimbo and master splinter and now
when he's facing the guards with his his little
stick here and he flaps them Like, hey, look,
it's Mr. Miyagi. So Sugar, Ollie, and Charlie
all escape. It's strange seeing them outside
the walls of the prison. The nice pastels. It
kind of gives you a sense of relief. who because
when they're in the prison they have like the
bright strong colors and Against the black and
harsh black like guards, and then you just get
this nice Peaceful, I mean you finally feel like
these nice Absolutely You know and you know between
the three of them Because Charlie Charlie's like
There's always friends that you just like oh
I don't know what to do because he wanted to
take him home with them. They can't do that,
you know So sad cuz he's wanting to help me he
doesn't know how And how many times have we been
in that situation? Yeah Oh, yeah, absolutely
I love Charlie running away by Oliver by sugar
by ghost flippers by spooky Cosmo by nightmare.
Oh, I just love that and Sugar kind of parting
ways here and even though she's like, you know,
this world thinks we don't feel nothing, thinks
we don't matter. I don't remember kindness or
love. I don't know what it's like to not have
to just survive. Face it, we've got nowhere to
go, kiddo. We don't have anything. And he's basically
convincing her, you're wrong, Sugar. We have
freedom, thanks to you. You're stronger than
this. We have hope now. You said it yourself.
So they're going to run off into the dancing
sunset here, which is kind of funny. Yeah, so
their story ends, but then Yeah, happy shiny
bus time and then you see the next story that
goes to Jackson You see the next story that goes
to Jackson, you know And Yeah, okay, I don't
know how they could do another one of these I
mean This series nearly killed us with emotions.
Oh, god, yeah. I love Ryan's writing. I love
Daniel's art. I think it's great. I think it's
an awesome, independent kind of creator -owned
comic thing that isn't your traditional superhero
story or your traditional giant robot story or
whatever that isn't a licensed property. But
again, I just don't know how. I mean, that's
what we thought about Dave. If they were to ever
go back to this. I'm not sure how they can do
it. But that's what I'm saying. We didn't think
it could continue, but it is. Wait, we'll talk
about Dave in a bit. He can make it work. But
that's what I'm saying. We didn't think it could
continue, but it is. A farrier is amazing with
his writing. He can make it work. Oh, yeah, he
can. Very much so. Issues three and four, I really
dug them. I thought they were great. Issue three
is, like we said, probably the most emotional
comic that I've read in a while. And then issue
four, you know, basically, as Sugar said, restores
the hope. Overall, I'm going to give the series
a four and a half, all four issues. It was all
great because I wasn't sure where it was going
to go after each issue. Damn Oh, yeah, absolutely
Yes, yes it was Alright folks, we're gonna take

right, folks, we are back here inside the pull
bag. And this was something that I found out
about, like, is like five seconds after we stopped
recording Hot Damn last week. Like literally,
I don't even know where. I think somebody put
up the covers on Facebook, and I'm like, wait,
what? Immediately, I start tweeting at Ryan Ferrier,
at Ryan Ryder on Twitter, and I'm like, wait,
really? Seriously? He's like, yep. So this news
story is coming from the AV Club. This was posted
September 14th of this year. IDW's Dave returns
to skewer campaign politics in this Daveocracy
exclusive. This election season has often felt
like one long farce, so it's only natural that
some new election -based comedy would emerge
in its wake. Enter Dave. The robotic lead of
two past miniseries is back for a third with
the debut of Daveocracy in January 2017. After
saving the world multiple times, Dave is planning
to use that heroic reputation to become Commander
-in -Chief. The original Dave creative team of
writer Ryan Ferrier and artist Valence and Ramon
reunites to chronicle Dave's wacky sci -fi hijinks
on the campaign trail. And this week's final
issue of their hot damn miniseries teases Dave's
return in this new title. And a couple of quotes
here. Yes, it's true. We're back since very after
a quick Excursion to hell and hot damn Valentine
are back on earth to rejoin Dave his son Scotty
his ex -wife Sally and other familiar robot faces
During the cast are two new characters. So wild
we wouldn't dare spoil it I guarantee however
that Davocracy will make everything we know and
love about Dave the heart the humor and the action
and amp it up to a vagillion So excited. Yeah,
it's gonna be awesome. Oh, it's gonna be so good
You know and Ferrier goes on to say in this article
He says we're beyond excited and indescribably
thrilled to continue Dave's story with IDW No
punches will be held. No limits are in sight
and every vote counts. This is the Dave story
We were destined to make hold on to your butts
Reader curious about Dave and company can check
out the first too many series Dave and Dave 2
and collected editions It's not required to enjoy
democracy though the new book it stands in January
and RW has provided so the AV Club has these
these these new covers and I Love these these
are great. I think it's awesome And of course
it's farrier and Ramon and I'm just wondering
like With covers I wonder how like the joke has
to be farriers writing America's cure for electile
dysfunction On the cover of the main cover Uh,
which one did you like out of these here? Oh,
girl. I like them all. Yeah. It's one of those
things that's just like... Because they each
have such a... Nope. I'm looking at it and I'm
just like... I'll go with the first one. I like
them all, but I like that first one. Yeah, I
like the first one as well the okay, so the first
one as I said it basically it's a It's Dave standing
there You know up against sort of an American
flag kind of thing with with other robot well
it's robot versions of Republican and Democrat,
and it's basically a voter poster is what the
cover is going to be. The middle one is him covered
in an American flag, and the bottom one is basically
him standing on his taxi cab, you know, vote
for me, with everybody kind of around him. But
yeah, that first one is awesome. I wish this
was who we were voting for in November. I think
when I first told you about this last week, when
I first, you're like, finally a candidate I can
support. I can stand by. But yeah, no, democracy
coming in January 2017. Can't wait for that.
That'll probably be another big thing Nicole
and I do since we've already covered the other
two Dave series So that's probably not gonna
be our next big thing that we do Because now
that we wrapped up hot damn we wrapped up kennel
block blues in this episode Yep, what else you
got going on over there? iPod and electronics
they all can you know just be glad you know your
your iPod doesn't explode I mean there's that
Okay, I'm getting old. Yeah, I'm getting old
Everybody's saying oh, we can't wait till the
galaxy note 8 and I'm like well as long as they
don't explode like the sevens did So alright
