IDW’s Jem and the Holograms Comic Series Announcement

not any jokes around here. What with all the

seriousness of putting geeks in a round table

about comic books. You're listening to The Pole

Bag After Dark. Welcome to the pull bag This

is yet again another after dark episode and we

are recording this during the day and as you

can hear in the background I have two lovely

ladies with me. I'm of course TF2 and Mike two

crazy comic ladies I should say see he's gonna

do there remove the cat and put the comics in

I can't decide which is which. So it's been...

I don't have a rocker, so... No, no, no, no.

We can actually pull that in and actually hedge

the whole fact that we're going to be talking

about some rockin' awesome comics. Yes, yes we

are. So it's been about four months since we

did an After Dark. I do want to do more of these,

but it's been a rough four months, honestly.

So the reason why we are here is because earlier

this year, I think it was at San Diego Comic

-Con, or no, it was at New York Comic -Con actually.

It was at New York Comic -Con. The sneaky little

devils at IDW released just one teaser image

with outrageous on it. And it was all purple

with an outline, a shadow of Jem. And IDW Publishing

is going to be doing a Jem and the Holograms

comic book coming in March of next year, 2015.

And why shouldn't they? True. I mean, they wrote

that. they've already got transformers turtles

ponies and the fact that we've got the movie

coming out i mean in 2015 as well i mean hey

it's like the perfect time yeah um so uh as of

this recording december 2nd 2014 they just put

on facebook their uh press release for Gem and

the Holograms, which I'm going to read a good

portion of it. Because up until now, we haven't

had a writer yet. So we've been waiting in anticipation.

Right. We haven't had like they and this is why

I call them in general, because I really don't

want a single barber out. But I will. You know,

that's why I call them devils is because they

gave us that one image at New York Comic Con

and they waited to they had us waiting on the

edge of our seats for two months like What's

going on with this? So here we go. Gem and the

Holograms get a comic book series that is truly

outrageous. It's Showtime Synergy. Hey! Thanks

for online! At IDW Publishing. IDW Publishing

is excited to expand its long relationship with

Hasbro and welcome Gem and the Holograms to the

world of comic books. Starting in March 2015,

Gem and company will star in their first ongoing

series. World full of fashion art action and

style the life is writer Kelly Thompson from

story killer the girl who would be king an artist

Ross Campbell from glory TMNT With subscription

covers by Sarah Richard from My Little Pony and

Kitty and Dino or Dino whatever uh... it is the

twenty first century and jim holograms are twenty

first century girls meet jerica benton the gifted

singer of the holograms band that has the right

look and the right sound but one thing is holding

them back jerica's crippling stage fright. Luckily

Jerica is about to find help in the most unlikely

of places when she discovers a forgotten present

left by her father and what she finds is truly

outrageous. Okay so her crippling stage fright,

does this mean that synergy is going to have

some kind of of impact on her mind as well because

when she turns into Jim that she gets over the

stage fright or so are they starting off being

in a band already but they can't do it because

Jericho's the singer and she can't be on stage

I mean I've got so many questions just with this

We like to tease we're gonna change things up

just a little bit and I kind of like the idea

that sound like The rules that we have here at

the pull bag and with Nicole as far as anything

after midnight do not apply anymore apparently

All right, so when I first read the little description

on this thing which will be I'm gonna copy this

into the post so people can read it for themselves

I'm thinking Jerrica's crippling stage fright.

Why can't they give that the pizzazz? No, like

give her something It wouldn't work for that

character, I don't think yeah Well, they are

changing it up, so, you know, something. Here's

a quote from Kelly Thompson. She says, Don't

miss the chance to get the five starting rainbow

one for each hologram by artist Amy Meberson,

who does My Little Pony and Pocket Princesses,

plus the whole band by series artist Ross Campbell

Oh my gosh. IDW is really gonna like - It's gonna

be fantastic. They stole so much of my buddy.

Okay, I personally gave them buddy, especially

this week. I bought seven covers of Transformers

this week, okay? You're crazy. Well, they came

out with four comics. What the crap? You know?

A second box set for issue two will feature another

set of four covers by Memberson, a group shot

by Campbell, this time starring Jim's greatest

nemesises, The Misfits. Okay, so let's see. Where

is Barber's... quote wasn't there okay here it

is uh getting a gem in the holograms comic going

was top priority for me when i started idw says

senior editor john barber it took three years

but kelly and ross came in with a style and attitude

that really got gem they understand gem's appeal

i can't overstate the impact gem has had on generations

of fans and readers um The reason why we're doing

this after dark here in the pullback is because

of the simple fact that the three of us are going

to be doing a GEM review podcast on the GeekCast

Radio Network called Showtime Synergy starting

next year in celebration of the 30th anniversary

of GEM. Yeah, we've already been working our

little high knees off to get it off. So it was

like, oh, this is perfect. We've got to make

a segment about this. Talk about it. Yeah, exactly

You know, I'm really interested to see where

they're gonna go with this I like the art style.

I I Don't know. I like it. It's different, but

I think it's a little too much aimed at kids

Nah, I think like again, that's just the cover

and we all know you can't go off the cover Ultra

Magnus taught us this in December or November

You know the good thing I like it because it's

Just so different, they're switching it up, they're

giving so much more personality to the characters

than I think we've ever seen. And it's just kind

of cool to see just the switch to switch it up.

I mean, one of the other, let's see, io9 does

it? Yeah, comic book. News report had more like

sketches and stuff like that. And if you go and

look at the different character sketches, it's

just I'm really digging it. I'm really digging

just the the style, the just the different flair

to it. I mean, it's just it's I don't know. It's

just it's so hard to kind of put into words exactly

the how I don't even know if they're nailing

it or not, because I haven't read anything yet.

But like the fact that that they're really Putting

so much into the into the characters and really

just switching up and making it different. I'm

really digging it Like you can and all of the

characters are absolutely you can absolutely

tell who they are and everything. So it's like

Yeah, she's awesome and even like even the care

look so we've got that we've got a cover and

then we've got little profiles of each one of

the characters and like even Like the difference

between the cover and then also the actual pictures

of the of the characters It's just like it's

cool to see what they're doing with their like

what they've got for their wardrobe But you're

right Roxy's that because Mike was telling yeah

Mike was telling me this is the fan art that

they did Well, this is Ross Campbell's fan art.

He did a little while ago. That's what it says

in the story It says it's you know update the

the sketches below are Ross's old fan art. Now

it'd be cool to see these designs in the book

if they're going to go to do this and that would

be fine with me. Um, I just, I just don't want

people to be misleading. You know, I, I don't

want to mislead people and say, Hey, go to this

article and look, because this is what you're

going to get in the book. Cause we don't know.

We just know what we have on the cover. If the

cover is any indication of how these sketches

have kind of influenced what they're doing with

the actual character designs so far, I'm already

kind of digging it. I like the fact that Kimber's

look is a little bit different. She's got a little

bit more curls in her hair now. I like her shoes.

The evolution of that. I mean, it's just, yeah.

I like all their shoes. I'm already thinking

the fashion looks, okay? I really like the boots.

I just want to see what the Misfits look like

because if this is a little bit of an evolution

I mean if we're if the cover is an evolution

of what he started out with with the sketches

I'm really kind of digging it I want to know

what they look like and I'm really really stoked

to see that especially like Aja Aja's look is

so completely different than what I would imagine

her but yet she's totally cool I'm like I love

her don't mess with her man she'll punch you

in the face or she'll just run you right over

with a car i i really want them uh you know i'm

i'm gonna i'm gonna tweet at john when i put

when i put this episode out and everything else

but i really want them to chippendale have no

have one no that's what you want have have one

issue dedicated to Aja and her driving I Mean

I mean if Marvel can do it with Hawkeye's dog

or you know if you know, I mean if IDW you can

do it with I was gonna say underdog Wow, that's

the wrong character if IDW you can do it with

thundercrackers play I'm sure they could do it,

you know Yeah, Johnny Boyfriend and Susan Journeyman,

or Journeyer. Oh, God. But I am super excited

for this. It's going to be really, really interesting

to see what they do and to see what kind of story

they tell. What I'm wondering at this point is,

is Kelly, as the writer, going to stick to a

strict continuity for it? Or is she going to

do, like, each comic will be a singular adventure

for Gem of the Holograms? Because, you know,

Amy, you already said it, we're in the midst

of production on the Gem review show, and we're

halfway, almost to the end of season two, and

it pretty much follows a... Borderline strict

continuity as far as how the events started where

they where they are going and you know how the

so I'm kind of wondering how Kelly's gonna approach

the writing of the book that That's that's you

bring up a really good point because like again

the cover only has just four characters we know

that Jetta and Raya come into it and we see character

sketches for them So I would say that that the

idea is to bring Maybe those characters and I

don't know. We'll see. We'll see how it goes.

The evolution of this. I, it would make sense

to me that they would do that, but we'll see.

We'll see how it goes. I want to see Eric Kramen.

Where's my Eric Kramen? We got a Rio. Why not?

Nicole doesn't care about. I want to see Eric

Kramen. He's got to be in this. He's got, we've

talked about this and people hear later on. He's

the ultimate douchebag, but he's such an essential

character to everything. And for some reason,

you like the douchebag. And I hope that it stays

Eric, not Erica. Yeah, that movie is, I don't

even know. I just don't. Talking about John and

Barbara, does this mean we're going to get a

Transformers crossover? Yeah! They'll be in a

panel in the background. They could do something

like that to be honest. I mean, with the transformer,

well, the formerly known as robots in disguise,

you know, Black Rock could be like putting on

a concert and like, you know, Autobots and Decepticons

crash it. I just want to have a crazy contest

between Pizzazz and Galvatron. That would be

so awesome! We want all of the continuity smashed

together. Hey, they're doing it with Ghostbusters

and Turtles and it's awesome! Well, IDW has done

it with, you know, Turtles and Ghostbusters,

they've done it with Transformers and My Little

Pony, Transformers and Mars Attacks, which is

probably one of the best comics out there, people.

Yeah, yeah, so I mean I wouldn't put it past

them Just I mean I would I would assume that

would be a one -shot just like a one -shot kind

of special kind of deal I don't think they could

do a four -issue miniseries there synergy can

just make the girls into mini cons there you

go this is a really insane idea just saying hey

I have not said the C word at all no because

you're afraid of what Amy and I might say to

corrupt it This is all your fault Nicole. I'm

just gonna put that out there right now go only

human and have the Decepticon's bodies get put

into human bodies and Cyclonus becomes real.

Bam, there you go. You're really trying to break

her brain, aren't you? Alright folks So that's

I think we've reached the end of the holographic

rope here Well, if that isn't a tease for our

show that we're doing, oh my goodness. Ladies

and gentlemen, I am telling you right now, with

these two ladies, I am each sending them medical

bills if I have to go in the hospital and have

my jaw realign from laughter. Let's just say

at the end of almost every show in the last couple

of weeks, he says, I hate you. And get more real

hatred from me. Every week pretty much. There

was one week I was sick, I swear. That really

needs to be edited out of the show. I'll have

to remember that. I haven't edited any of those

episodes yet. You don't want to make your listeners

sick. Just saying. We have passion, all three

of us have passion for this industry, Jim and

the holograms. Some of us have more passion for

characters than others. No, it's a really good

franchise and I'm enjoying seeing that it's starting

to get the love back. Roxy rules. I hope they

stick with the big hair because she's just like

awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, I love her new look

those big earrings. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I hope

they go to I hope they go to China and have a

Miss Fats joke. I hope they never go to China

again. That was the episode ever. If they go

to China, they have to bring in frickin frack.

Just saying. Yeah. Frickin frack in China. Oh

people really you need to go with her This is

just the teasers, you know, cuz hey, they probably

all hear this before they get to hear there's

the whole show so Alright folks, I know I know

this is a short after dark, but you know Hope

you enjoyed it. We are so looking forward to

the Jim the holograms comic coming in March of

2015 You know coming up sometime in 2015. I think

I think I'm starting it around May and it'll

end around October November of 2015 We're gonna

have Showtime synergy 25 podcasts covering all

65 episodes of gem in the holograms as well as

the comics because by then there'll be plenty

of comics out And we're also going to painstakingly

do a movie review for the new movie Maybe maybe

it'll be good Maybe. We've got a year to, you

know. I'm not liking what I'm hearing right now,

but I will give it a shot. It couldn't be any

worse than Phantom Menace. Hopefully. You mean

it couldn't be any worse than Revenge of the

Fallen. Revenge of the Fallen had some good moments.

It had some good moments, I have to agree with

that. They just didn't come together as a whole,

okay? We'll appreciate the fact that it's gotten

gem in the holograms back into the kind of the

limelight and getting attention Who knows what

will come out of it? But you know, I I put all

of my faith in IDW I will I will enjoy that for

sure. So I'm just with this this few you could

tell that each one of these characters have different

body shapes. They've got different Personalities

already just in this one image. I'm excited for

it. Yeah Next year's gems 30th anniversary. So

You know Hasbro did an amazing push this year

for transformers they did I mean they they went

all out, you know, you look at the Automatic

transforming book thing you look at jim and jim

sorenson and bill i almost said jim forester

wow jim sorenson and bill forester's uh that's

their love child legacy book you look at you

know we had the new movie say what you will or

what you want about it uh you know we had um

the new movie wasn't bad i mean it was it really

was it was much better than than I have to say,

yeah. It would have got two points higher if

Mark Wahlberg would have taken his shirt off.

But I didn't get that. And sad face Nicole. That's

because the internet is for Nicole. Jim and the

Holograms from IDW Publishing, Kelly Thompson,

Ross Campbell, next year, March 2015. Go tell

your comic shops now, folks. Yep. Because those

two box sets for the first, what is it? Eight

issues. That's going to be brilliant. Or so.

Yeah. It's going to be brilliant and it's going

to be expensive. I know. But guess who's going

to buy it? It's so pretty. It is going to be

pretty. It's going to be so pretty. It'll be

outrageous. Truly. Yes. Alright, so I know this

is a short we're gonna say Nicole. I said she's

still Kimber's line. Yep She dyed her hair. There

you go. Put a wig on her Amy you be good Jim

Jericho, I could see you pulling it off. You

need to borrow Nicole's pink wig though. I've

got it None for me, thanks. Alright, so, this

has been Pullback After Dark. It's a little short

one. I know Pullback hasn't had an episode in

a couple of weeks. We're working on that. I think

the last thing we released was Sex Criminals

Volume 1, so we're kinda taking a little bit

of a break since it is the holidays, etc, etc.
