About this Episode

Dan talks about his journey into comics, starting with 90s cartoons like X-Men and the Punisher, action figures, and how characters like Cable bridged his love of GI Joe into the Marvel Universe. He discusses his heavy collecting period during Civil War and the subsequent shift to trade paperbacks, his frustration with rising comic costs, and how he's recently been exploring DC titles like Court of Owls and expanding beyond superhero comics into series like The Walking Dead and Irredeemable.

Gosh, this is so great! Welcome to The Pole Bag's

Origins episodes. Join TFG1 Mike as he grills

this week's guest on just how they cut into reading

comics and more. So sit back, relax, and enjoy

The Pole Bag. Welcome to the pull bag. This is

an origins episode and Yes, that is correct.

We have switched things up here in the pull bag

origin episodes of their own thing unnumbered

I Am your host TF Joe and Mike joining me is

comic rebel Dan sir. Is it there clever clever?

You know that name can go with almost anything

you talk about you can just change it up every

single time I am multi -faceted I guess Apparently

so. Apparently so. Man of many colors. Yes. Why

is the Wizard of Oz flashing in my head? That's

a horse of a different color. I can't be a horse,

but I will try. We are here doing a Origins episode.

For those of you who have listened to the podcast

before, for those of you who haven't, Origins

episodes are where I... bring people on from

uh... geocaster network and other places around

the net to basically grow them on how they get

into reading comics and that's what we're doing

here for those they're listening that don't haven't

listened to you on m wire and the other stuff

you've done for gc r and want to introduce yourself

to the people won't have to use my name is dan

obviously i am uh... anything only a big movie

fan of course uh... you probably heard me and

wire few of the movie uh review what uh shows

as well as my reviews are on the website as well

um of course my first love is definitely movies

but that's not my only love and my for way for

way into the geek world was most likely was mostly

through comics i my love for movies really came

within the last you know five or six years before

that and i was all about you know x -men spider

-man all that great stuff It's kind of looking

forward to being able to kind of not talk about

movies for once more focus on something different.

That's something I really longed to get back

to because it's been a long time since I really

discussed comics at length, so it's like a it's

like a Huge knowledge trip for me in a way It's

funny you say that is my main thing with this

show we started the pull bag Coming up March

2014 will be our one year anniversary, but March

5th 2013 I started it and I'm like the pull bag

current, you know reviewing current comics and

We don't have that, you know 70 years of baggage

Because we started with the new 52 at DC and

all that and But you are one of those people

that has read a lot of the old stuff. I mean,

I want to say a huge amount. My huge amount of

knowledge is actually a decade of comics that

a lot of people kind of aren't being fans of,

and that's the 90s. A lot of people look at the

90s as one of the worst decades ever for comics,

but that's when I was kind of in the thick of

it, and that's kind of when that and mid -2000s,

which we'll get into, that's when I got mostly

into. I haven't really read much stuff. in the

80s, besides the big stuff, and 70s and 60s,

I am a newbie at. But thank God for Wikipedia

and Marvel database, because I am a Marvel guy.

I know you're a DC dude, but Marvel was kind

of my bread and butter. I like the Marvel characters.

I just... I just can't seem to, outside of Superior

Spider -Man, every other current Marvel book

that I've attempted to pick up, outside of me

saying, oh, the cost. I mean, that's the excuse

for everybody that's, you know, buying comics

is, oh my god, I'm reading all this stuff and

I'm spending all this money and I can't afford

to add six new titles from Mo - I love them.

I love certain of the Marvel characters, and

I love my love came out of the old animated series

You know those wanted to get me into comics,

and I have a huge list Huge wish list over in

stock trees calm to get a lot of trades of the

old stuff so But as far as like Marvel's current

Marvel now universe they Because of the phenomenon.

I guess you've got a phenomenon of comic book

movies and superhero movies nowadays specifically

after the blockbuster one billion dollar hit

that the Avengers was last year it seems like

they are trying to push the Avengers and I previous

to the film I Didn't care like you know people

talk about Oh, Ant -Man. Ant -Man's getting his

own movie. Well, the only thing I know about

Ant -Man is that crappy United We Stand cartoon.

And no one can deny that that United We Stand

cartoon isn't crappy because it is very crappy.

You mean Power Rangers the Avengers cartoon?

That was such a horrible cartoon and that came

on like right after X -Men ended and I remember

being a kid hoping like, oh, this is gonna be

great. The Avengers are gonna have a cartoon

now. And then they have it, they're big three,

the Thor, Iron Man, Captain America aren't even

in it. I like Ant -Man as a character, Ant -Man

or whatever he's going by, because that guy changes

names more than Prince. But I think the Avengers

push actually happened before the movies. From

what I can remember, it really happened near

the end of Avengers Disassembled. And when the

new Avengers kicked off, it kind of helped redefine

what was out there. I'm not trying to shortchange

Avengers Earth Mightiest Heroes and then the

current Cartman. I'm just saying that it Even

though I knew about Cap Thor Iron Man Hulk the

the core You know the core people that most people

think about not the obscure characters because

I'm sorry I you know and people you can do you

can defend this in the comments if you'd like

Ant -Man to me is not a core character at Marvel

He's it's very obscure to me specifically. He's

very obscure Yeah, I would also say though before

the movie like our Iron Man and Ant -Man are

honestly probably around the same Popularity

level like Armin was always kind of B level character

same thing with Ant -Man I mean and man was a

founding member of the Avengers But what happened

with the new Avengers though is it became it

did what? comics do usually that boost up sales

and that's adding two characters either Wolverine

or Spider -man and what they did is they had

both to the new Avengers and that actually kind

of I don't we're kind of For you know, we're

fast getting off the topic. But yeah, I mean,

you know, that's just one of the reasons why

I'm My heart is more in the DC universe than

it is Marvel. I'm not saying oh my god Marvel.

They're evil No back away back away slowly. No

not at all. I love a lot of their characters

and I love A lot of stories that have been told

with their characters, you know but DC right

now between the entire animated universe that

Bruce Tim came up with and all the Most of the

current cartoons not counting that teen Titans

crap, which is not in continuity You know outside

of that, you know and outside of like stuff like

Legion of Superhero or Yeah, it was Legion of

Superheroes, you know all the mainstream DC cartoons.

I pretty much enjoyed I love most of the films

even though there are some bad ones. So yeah,

I'm pretty much a DC kind of guy cuz you know,

there's only so many of the same story you can

tell with Spider -Man going up against the Green

Goblin. And I'm sure people could say that, oh,

there's so many stories. There's only so many

stories you can tell about Batman facing the

Joker. And I get that. All right, so let's get

back to the comics here. When was it the moment

in your childhood or your young adulthood that

you... Found comics was it a family member was

it your dad and uncle grandfather who introduced

you to comics actually my brother is one that

introduced me to comics and Growing up we shared

a bedroom since he was older like he got choice

decorations went up, web posters, and he was

big into the anti -hero type of characters. Like,

we had a huge Punisher Warzone comic or poster

on our wall. Wolverine was there. I mean, this

is also later on, like in the 90s, he got really

into image stuff like Spawn and Blood Ties and

those different characters. But yeah, my brother's

really one that got me into it. And, you know,

being the younger brother, I got interested as

well. kind of like my gateway into comics was

actually something completely different, which

was G .I. Joe, which may sound weird, but I grew

up as a big G .I. Joe fan as a kid. Watched the

cartoon. The toys were I played the toys ad nauseam.

So I was a little. What struck me about Punisher

was the fact that he had all these awesome guns.

I don't know why, but as a kid, I'd love guns

and weapons as for some reason. And that's usually

how I define how much I love the character was

because of what weapon they had or what gun they

were using. Which is also why I love Wolverine

because he had these awesome claws. They had

built -in weapons. That was awesome. So that's

what kind of got me into it was Punisher. And

two, you know, they were kind of cool because

they were kind of bad. You know, they're their

anti -hero. Punisher would kill people. I even

played the NES Punisher game. I actually even

liked the Punisher movie that everyone hated.

And now that I kind of hang my hand in shame

that I actually like that movie. Are you talking

about He -Man as the Punisher? I am talking about

He -Man as the Punisher, Drago himself. Dolph

Lundgren, that's right. Yeah, the 1989 Punisher.

Him hanging out naked in the sewers. It was just

not right. for no apparent reason. You need to

do a review on that for the site. I triple dog

dare you. You cannot back down now. I'd have

to go re -watch it, I'm sure. But also, too,

that kind of whet my appetite but really got

me into comics, though, was the... You talked

about the DC animated stuff. Well, the 90s X

-Men cartoon came out the perfect time, because

that's when my brother was kind of reading all

this stuff and... Picked it up right there. Like

I was so addicted to that cartoon every Saturday

morning came on at 11 a .m I couldn't wait for

it at every episode. I had loved it so much the

characters the world I and asked so many questions

because he knew so much about the characters

I just wanted to know more and more and to a

big thing that got me into it war was the The

action figure line I mentioned GI Joe and that

that's kind of how I got into it was because

I'd love those figures and The Marvel characters

were kind of like GI Joe's but they were bigger

and better in the first I still remember the

first character I bought which was cable Maybe

you talked about Ant -Man being a no -name character

for many people have no idea who cable is if

you watch the cartoon he's in the cartoon a good

amount and he's actually the son of Scott Summers,

Cyclops, and Madeline Pryor, who is the clone

of Jean Grey made by Mr. Sinister. He's older

than Cable. our Cyclops because he was sent to

the future because he was infected with this

technical organic virus and then like most people

that are sent to the future he comes to the past

to try to right the wrong so his future never

happens but as a kid why I love them is like

I mentioned he came with this awesome looking

gun he looked really cool he had all these like

little weapon pouches so he was like my first

he was a perfect transition he was uh because

he was kind of like a GI Joe like but he was

also a mutant so that kind of melding of those

two worlds really was the transition I needed

to really get into comics and X -Men in a way

from like the G .I. Joe stuff. And still to this

day, Cable is probably still my favorite character

for a lot of reasons. It started off as something

kind of childish, but it's grown and I've really

grown to really appreciate that character for

many different reasons. Yeah, you know, I would

agree. It's like, and the X -Men cartoon did

a fairly good job of explaining who he was and

they never really gave us any true answers because

I don't and again I'm going off of memory I should

know this cartoon like the back of my hand but

I don't think it was ever explained in the cartoon

to Scott and quote -unquote Jean since they never

actually called her or her clone in the cartoon

Madeline Pryor but they always called her Jean

It was hinted at in one episode. It was hinted

at, but it was hinted at. They left it as a cliffhanger,

pretty much. He's like, he's our what? He's our

son? You know, I mean, they left it as, oh, hey,

we need ratings. You know, they left it as that.

But yeah, no, I mean, and for me, you know, you

said a second ago that Iron Man is a B plus character

see Well, I will not defend the first season

of the 1990s for iron man series i will defend

the second season because the second season and

so much better animation all right uh... i agree

i i love that and that like the marvel action

hour when it was stanley would come out and introduce

the the africans and you have iron man and then

you had fantastic four and i even like the first

season of iron man i know it's kind of crappy

the animation i like the voice acting in it and

i like the stories they told but the animation

is just it hasn't held up unity but i think i've

even by nineteen ninety six stands at nineteen

four standards it just it just hasn't held up

over time yet it's pretty cheap uh... you know

and so it's one of those things where I know

all these Marvel characters, but I've never...

Because back then, for me, as I've said many

times on this show before, I wasn't like... The

Fantastic Four cartoon, the original 94 cartoon,

it actually made me want to go get Fantastic

Four comics. I don't think I ever did, but it

was one of those things. Same thing with Iron

Man. Same thing with X -Men. I wanted to read,

you know, Days of Future Past, or I wanted to

read... uh... was it for part of beyond good

and evil which is essentially uh... the apocalypse

story you know i would you know watch most of

yours made me want to read that stuff and but

now with the new universe and there's all new

x -men and i and i and i get that and i understand

that they're they're going to bring in new readers

uh... all right so we've established that you're

a marvel guy You like GI Joe What? Are you current

have you stepped away because you've made comments

to me all fair about that you used to collect

but you don't mean I mean Are you completely

out of reading comics nowadays or not? I'm not

completely completely out of it. I'm more so

going into trade back trade paper back route

where I am kind of just waiting for stories to

happen like even when in the 90s when i was into

that stuff i really wasn't into comics all that

much i most of my knowledge came from reading

the back of the action figure stuff i really

didn't get into comic collecting into like my

high school and college years um what brought

me back into comics was actually my friend bought

me um the trade paperback for cable and deadpool

um cable being my favorite character and deadpool

also being one of my favorite characters as a

kid and I read X -Men and I did read X -Men the

Jim Lee X -Men which is if you're a fan of the

cartoon that is a perfect series to get into

because a lot of the art a lot of the design

of the characters a lot of the story lines are

very similar to the cartoon but to my favorite

characters and also X -Force which is kind of

like X -Men with guns they have lesser care the

characters are kind of more gritty they're not

as clean cut which I kind of appreciated. But

anyways, I got to trade paperback of keep it

cable and Deadpool. I read it and I loved it

I thought it was great cable was a little bit

different. He Was like at his fullest power because

when cable is fully powered, he's pretty much

a badass He can pretty much be on these unstoppable

in some ways. He has a telekinesis of Beyond

jean grey his psychic ability is rivals at a

professor x But he usually isn't that powerful

because of the techno -organic virus But he was

at that point and it got into all the storyline

and counter cable with dental it's the ultimate

odd couple because Deadpool is such a Oddball

character. He's you know Never serious. He's

always joking. He's completely out of his mind

and cable who's very rigid very sold He's a soldier.

He's been a soldier all his life So it was a

great mesh of those characters and I love that

series I always describe it as a comic book that

loved being a comic book It didn't really get

involved in the big stories all that much, but

that really brought me back into it So after

I finished that trade, I got had to get more

had to get more and more I get that started getting

those weekly and then It was perfect timing because

a comic book store opened up near me and the

guy was just starting out So I got a lot of great

deals picked up a lot of great stuff. I got the

entire Age of Apocalypse Set like every comic

that was in that series I got it for like $25,

which is crazy because it's a good 45 comics

or so and I loved it because apocalypse is one

of my favorite villains because him and Keeble

or have a pretty huge history. But the next big

comic I got into was the Ed Bruda Baker Captain

America series, which was amazing because I always

saw Captain America as this kind of clean cut,

just kind of boring character, but he made Captain

America into a very... in -depth, damaged, tragic

hero and how he brought back Bucky and how he

dealt with that and how he incorporated the history

of World War II and how it had such a huge impact

on that character of Captain America and made

Steve Rogers into this really well -rounded person.

I just, I loved every issue and the art too was

great, but so that. Kind of just expanded from

there the new Avengers came out. I got into that

house of end came out civil war I just kind of

I was collecting everything I was spending like

60 90 dollars a week because I was just collecting

everything anytime anything that says civil war

on it I was buying it. So it I was going to $90

a week Oh my god, I spend like $190 a month.

Yeah, I mean that wasn't every week but in a

big week I would spend a lot of money. I was

going like that pace for a long time And I started

to slow down slowly after I moved down to Baltimore.

So I had to find a new comic book shop. And also,

it was just getting expensive. I was getting

more into movies. And like you know, you talk

about a lot. Collecting comics is expensive.

Go ahead. It's so expensive. And I know we're

over 33 episodes into the podcast at this point.

And I know people are tired of hearing me say

this, but... I do it two ways. For the, oh my

god, I need to read this now, I get the singles,

and then I wait a few months, take all the singles

I just had of a certain run, take them up to

the comic shop and trade them in for store credit

to get the trade paperback of the same... To

me, it's not wasting money because it's saving

shelf space. yeah that's also I don't I don't

do long boxes I just I look at a long box and

I'm like oh my god there's no way I can keep

track all this oh well that's there's some easy

ways to keep track of it I used Actually, I before

this episode it's been years, but I logged into

my online database stash my comics Which is awesome

because you put all your comic information in

there It sorts it for you You can kind of keep

track of it like I have all my all my comic books

and white boxes and they're just in my Storage

room just collecting dust at this point But stash

my comics is great because I can just go on that

and see because I forget what I have sometimes

I'm like, I don't even know if I need to buy

this or not I don't know what I have because

it gets so you don't if you don't buy things

in order it's hard to tell so it's a perfect

it's awesome too and it's free it doesn't cost

anything and so what's it's called stash my comics

.com you can click and you can use it to track

uh trade paperbacks comic books um even like

action figures now i guess you can do stuff that

too um which wasn't like that when i first started

using it and i like my account was I stopped

using it about two years, a year and a half ago,

went back on it was still there. It's great because

you can kind of view them like the covers. If

things aren't there, you can have them added

and they'll add them for you. It's an awesome

tool. I like and they'll even like show you the

value of things and what they're going for. And

it's often like they'll have the information

for all the comic books. It's kind of like imagine

IMDB for comic books, but you can also use it

to store everything for you. It's pretty great.

That's awesome. Yeah, so that's I that I could

Storing stuff is kind of been actually going

back into its account. I'm getting that itch

again. I'm like, oh man. I love doing this I'm

a sucker for like database stuff. Like I have

a thing for Mike movies, too It's really dorky

and stupid, but I just love keeping track of

everything I know and growing that collection.

It's just it's fun. It's I don't know why but

I just find it fun All right, so How have the

comic book movies affected your opinion on comics

in general? Oh, geez. That's a good question.

Not a huge amount. I mean, it doesn't affect

my viewpoint of a movie more so or the way the

comics go. I kind of like how the... When the

movies came out like what Marvel did with creating

the Ultimates line I don't know if that wasn't

direct response to the movies because it came

closely after like X -Men came out and how they

established You're breaking on like 70 years

annuity and you need to know all these different

stories and even if you're out a few months It's

hard to get back in because so much can change

so yeah, that's what I loved about the Ultimates

line and that I I've got all those straight paperbacks

and those are the ultimates. I haven't really

got into Ultimate Spider -Man or anything like

that, but it hasn't really affected the way I

view comics at all. I kind of view them as two

separate things that they influence each other

here and there, but sometimes reading a comic

like Kick -Ass and I Love the Comic may intrigue

me more to go see the movie, and it kind of gives

me a better understanding of what they're going

for, but very rarely do they kind of correlate

to each other for me. Like I'm not one of those

people that gets angry because in the comic it

happened this way and the movie it happened that

way I'm fine I'm just as long as the story's

good. It's gonna definitely come up in Punisher

month in November. I tell you that right now.

Oh my god. I kind of actually I Hated the second

part of the Punisher war zone the latest one

for a long time, but I gained a new found respect

for it when I listened to the how this game made

episode with the director of that um and she

kind of explained what she was going for and

then she was really going for more of a dark

comedy type of tone and I kind of gained a new

respect for her just understanding where she

was coming from still don't really like it but

I don't hate it nearly as much as I used to I

find I don't want to spoil Punisher month because

one of the comics that we're gonna be covering

all in that in that spotlight on the Punisher

is the 2004 comic adaptation But I will say from

reading comic book versions of film characters

I don't particularly care for it specifically

to and I will praise IDW till the day I die.

They're amazing comic company, but Star Trek

number 21 In IDW continuity, which is after darkness

which is supposed to be the epilogue to the film

I Didn't like the art style the characters looked

stale and the fact that it's all about Vulcan

puberty turned me off but specifically to the

character designs they had the movie aesthetic

in it but it just looked so too and i i get it

comic books are two -dimensional but it just

didn't look like i expected it to look like and

it was just really really weird i think i'm gonna

have to step away from seeing Comic adaptations

of film. Yeah, those anything that's licensed.

I'm a little iffy by I know there's some great

stuff with like, you know, you reading your suffer

transformers and so In He -Man and whatnot, but

anytime they take a movie and try to do a comic

book I just it's weird seeing a comic drawing

of a real person. Sometimes it's I don't know.

It just it's odd for me I I don't really read

anything like that. There's actually kind of

one comic series. You might like is Way back

when the first Transformers movie came out, Marvel

did a little mini -series of the new Avengers

and Transformers, which wasn't too bad. It was

kind of interesting. But yeah, usually if something

has a license or it's coming based upon the movie

or the movie prequel, it's kind of like video

games based off movies. Most times they're not

very good. And see, the funny thing is that It's

just with movies. It's like DC has injustice

gods among us Which is the video game and they

also have a prequel comic series that is currently

running I think it's about to end its run in

a couple of months, but Like I can handle that

because it's based off of video game characters

and there's In comics, because that's where Superman,

Batman, all those characters really started,

there's no really wrong way. There are strange

ways, but there's no real wrong way to draw Superman

or Batman. But there is a really wrong way to

draw Chris Pine and color Chris Pine as Kirk

versus seeing him actually doing the physical

actions. And no offense to the people that worked

on IDW's Star Trek number... Issue number 21.

I thought the story was interesting and cool.

I thought the enterprise in comic form looked

damn awesome It's just the characters. They just

They just didn't didn't look all that great to

me. I could imagine. Yeah, that's that's odd,

but yeah, but Yeah, after kind of just to get

back into the whole origin aspect, after Secret

of Agent, I was really disappointed with how

that happened, ended. And this news thing happened

with Dark Rain where Norman Osborn kind of took

control of everything. And I really wasn't excited

to where it was going. So I kind of just abruptly

stopped collecting. And like I mentioned, just

went back to the trade paperback route, picking

things up here and there. I kind of go by characters

that I like and then certain writers. um in certain

there's certain like i'm a huge captain america

fan to this day if i see ed brooder baker's name

in captain america on anything i'm i'm buying

it like i just recently picked up uh comic baltimore

comic con was recently uh just happened not too

long ago and i went crazy about like 30 graphic

novels uh which is but keep in mind it was great

sales like i got something five dollars there's

some people had them five for 20 which i went

kind of nuts but i picked up a bunch I started

reading, I'm trying to get, this happened a long

time ago, but trying to shift focus away just

from the superhero characters or just from Marvel.

And I actually am trying to get into more DC

stuff because I'm hearing such great things about

it, listening to Paul Bagg just hearing, reading

some of your reviews, just getting, it's kind

of scratching that itch again. So I started,

I actually have a friend. who's gotten to the

new 52, so I read all the Court of Owl stuff.

I thought that was awesome. As a person who doesn't

know much about comic book Batman, I really enjoyed

that story. I'm still just starting to read The

Death of the Family, which seems pretty interesting

so far. But besides DC, I love The Walking Dead

comic book because A, it's great, it's well written,

the art's fantastic, and... What's great about

it is I don't have to worry about any other comic.

It's not like there's a spinoff series or anything

like that. It's just this is it. It's all in

here. So also Why the Last Man, Creature. And

recently I just picked up Irredeemable. I don't

know if you've ever heard about it. It's written

by Mark Waid. And what it is, it's what he used

to launch Boom, which is another brand of comics.

The whole premise of it is what if Superman went

evil? It's really interesting. I just finished

the first trade of it. It's kind of cool because

you have this Justice League trying to figure

out how to stop him. The series begins with him

killing a character that's very much modeled

off of Batman. All these characters are obviously...

fluent spy DC stuff or other comic characters.

They don't necessarily have Green Lantern per

se, but they have characters that kind of remind

you of them. And he takes homages from different

things. So it's really interesting. And there's

also another component to it where there's like

a where there's a comic about the Lex Luthor

character and he went good. I just I have that,

but I haven't started reading it yet. So I'm

trying to expand my grasp of the comic world

by picking up some other things that aren't label

marble yeah I mean you know you know I know IDW

is really good for that kind of stuff that you

know the non -superhero stuff and the transformer

stuff that they're doing currently is damn good

I'm trying to think Yeah, I'm I'm pretty much

the same way like right now I I know everyone

is praising quarter bells. I'm just waiting till

Till later in October when the trade comes out

for it for both that and Well, the trades been

out for for a while for court, but I'm waiting

for the actual non hardcover version And I'm

waiting on all the non -hardcover versions of

Court of Owls, Night of Owls, and City of Owls,

which is all the Court of Owls storylines tied

together in three books. I've read Death of the

Family. Everybody at this point should know my

thoughts on Death of the Family, and I'm okay,

I guess, to the point where... Zero Year, basically

my main opinion about Zero Year is it needs to

pick up, but I'd say the two main, if you have

any interest in the characters at all, not just

you, Dan, but anybody, the two main hits for

DC for me personally are Nightwing and Batgirl.

Kyle Higgins is on Nightwing, Gale Simone's on

Batgirl, they're just doing, you can really tell

when they're writing those stories, they really

enjoy and love those characters. Didn't they

just fire the girl for Batgirl though, that the

person was writing it? That was... Don't tell

me it happened again. I thought so. I thought

she was leaving. I don't know. I could be wrong.

I thought I heard that. It may not have been

back or all that. But it was my understanding

that... This is last year. A new editor came

in on the thing. Wanted to shake things up. Fired

her by email. There was a huge internet outcry.

And she got rehired and she's still on there

now. But I don't know if it's I don't think it's

happened again I thought I could be wrong, but

I remember something like that. But anyways,

yeah, I I do hear you're seeing your love for

Nightwing and I'll probably pick that up. What

I hate about comics is like how long the trades

always take to come out. You know, that's how

old they're just coming out now. Yeah, waiting.

Well, Court of Owls has been out in In you know

trade paperback non hardcover form for a while

But it's the other ones the second volume city

of owls That is just now coming out in paperback

form But for for DC and Marvel it that's that's

it's all about money apparently there are a lot

of hardcover collectors out there And I've said

this before in the show I don't see why you want

to collect a hardcover of a book that you want

to actually read because there are sometimes

speech bubbles in the cracks of the pages and

a hardcover you're going to break that binding

trying to open it to read what the hell the story

is saying if you can't see it. uh... so that's

that's my beef with hard covers and you're right

it does take forever that's one of the reasons

why i love IDW what they do is they release the

trades first and then later down the line they'll

do hardcover editions or what they call IDW limited

editions and they'll do those later down the

line and that's the greatest thing about them

Is there, I'm trying to think, where do you think

comics is going? Like, what do you see as the

future for whether it's non -superhero or even

superhero books? Wow, that's a good question.

It's hard for me to answer because I'm not in

it as much as some other people but it seems

very evident just with the new 52 and you know

the whole marvel now that the idea of continuity

isn't as important as it used to be or Maybe

that the fact that they're they're realizing

that You know, it's getting harder and harder

to get new fans because it's just a huge It's

hard to kind of get into something that's just

like this moving entity that is comics with their

history. So I could see perhaps even more and

more stuff like the New 52 or, you know, trying

to do more standalone comics, like look at the

success of Walking Dead. Comic book wise and

just television wise, I could see more comics

going that route where they're just not necessarily.

developing these gigantic huge worlds that are

all connected, but maybe more so smaller stories

about specific people. I mean, that's a possibility.

I mean, that's just something I'm guessing. I

really don't know, but who knows what's going

to happen. The movies are as popular as ever,

but I don't know necessarily if comic books are.

I don't know the transition, how much more sales

are up. I know they're nothing like they used

to be in the 90s, but it seems to be right now.

From what I hear that there there's a lot of

good stuff out there. I really don't know from

what I'm picking up and catching up with You

know, I I don't know. It's I like I like to see

I Don't know it's with baby Marvel and DC Work

more in correlation with one another and some

more crossovers It's been a long time since we

saw like the Marvel DC crossover books. They

haven't done that in years I don't know if they're

a little bit too, you know bitter at each other

right now, but That'd be kind of nice. There's

another like they're never very great but you

know, it's I have a few of those graphic novels

of you know Superman fighting Hulk and all that

stuff, but you know, it's I always like the idea

of Worlds crossing paths or characters crossing

paths that don't exist in the same universe,

you know alternate storylines and stuff like

that. So So what's one character that you want

to see DC show up in Marvel and vice versa? Mean

the easy one would see Batman and Marvel but

that seems like an easy kind of translated because

Batman always feels like a Marvel character and

You know in the DC world, I guess if I was gonna

see a Marvel character go into the DC world I'd

probably go with Wolverine just to see like because

he is one of those characters that is completely

okay with killing and how that and how a character

like Batman or even Superman would treat him

in the way he sees things, or the idea of mutants

in the DC world and how it would deal with an

issue like that. Just the idea of Wolverine fighting

Batman interests me. I would also like to see

Green Lantern go into Marvel's cosmic world,

which is something that I also love. There's

a lot of great cosmic stuff in Marvel, Silver

Surfer. I love the Guardians of the Galaxy comic,

and I'm glad it's getting made into a movie,

and the Annihilation series that was out there

too. There's this group called Nova Corps, which

is very similar to... It's a blatant copy of

the Guardians of the... Green Lantern Corps are

pretty much exactly the same thing So seeing

those two buttheads would be interesting a Nova

and a Green Lantern Probably either Kyle or John

Stewart because I'm more because I enjoyed those

more than how Jordan Yeah, yeah, that would be

interesting to see Where those those characters

go? All right, we're gonna take a quick break

We'll come back to close the show after this.

It's action. It's drama. It's comedy It's Decian,

the superhero webcomic. Decian has superhero

antics and sexy girls. Catch updates weekly at

Decian .com and NoSuperPants .com Coming soon

from the Command Center Commentaries, celebrating

20 years of Power Rangers. It's Morphin Time.

Thank you so much, Jason David Frank, for that

ringing endorsement. Yes, that's right, folks.

Starting in Episode 29 from the Command Center

is going back and celebrating 20 years of Power

Rangers with the From the Command Center Commentaries.

We'll be doing 15 episodes from MMPR Season 1.

And after that, who knows? I know we're doing

commentaries from seasons two and three, and

we'll do a commentary on the film. After that,

who knows? Commentaries could take us through

a number of episodes. There's a very, very, very

long list. So I hope everyone enjoys it. As I've

said before, we will get to Megaforce once that

series completes itself on Netflix or whatever

else. Thank you so much, and now... Prepare yourself

for, from the command center commentaries, our

way of going back in depth and noticing stuff

we did not pick up on in the original overview

episodes of the podcast, or stuff we missed when

we watched them as the children. Thank you very

much. As we review Doctor Who episodes, past

and present, discuss the Doctor's friends and

enemies, see where the Doctor's been, where he

is, and where he's going. Sit back and grab a

Jelly Baby and join Mark Who 42's Hooniverse.

It's the ride of this and every other lifetime.

Fantastic. Allons -y! JOLLYLOOOOOO! Alright,

we are back and... as i said earlier in this

episode and i said at the end of episode thirty

three uh... the pull bag is kind of shifting

gears we're going to do back issue classics for

all the back issue stuff uh... as separate unnumbered

episodes and the origins episodes are no longer

going to be numbered as well so that way if you

know say there's a month where we can get to

the bat books right away or we can get to the

spider books right away we can throw in a origins

app from someone at some point. It's always interesting

when I talk to everybody that I've talked to

so far and how everyone's story is so different

from each other and there have been a couple

of times where a couple of the stories that have

been told on the show were Somewhat similar and

I just find it interesting to see where everybody's

coming from with all the comics and stuff like

that and You know For me personally Marvel's

phase two I don't outside of If there even is

going to be another one outside of like an iron

man for uh... i'm really looking forward to cap

to uh... and vendors to uh... i would have to

do research to even know if i remember anything

about guardians people are talking about it like

it's the and all be all people are talking about

there is a galaxy like they're talking about

pacific rim all my god it's so great I don't

know. I'm not saying that Guardians is bad. I

just, I don't remember ever being exposed to

Guardians of Galaxy, so. It's not a very popular

comic. I mean, it was even, most comic book fans

aren't. Well, there was two versions of it. There

was one in the 90s, which is, and then it was

rebranded kind of in, you know, mid -2000s after

Annihilation, but yeah, they're characters that,

you know, Rocket, Raccoon, Groot are not named.

for even most comic book fans, so not being exposed

to them is probably a common theme for most fans.

Which is kind of the way I like it, because there's

no baggage to it. It can kind of do what it wants.

But there are a lot of great characters in that

story, so there's a lot. And especially with

James Gunn directing it, he, to me, could do

a lot of interesting things with those characters

in that world and expanding the Marvel universe,

the cinematic universe, to the cosmic. characters

is pretty cool. I mean, I kind of just wish they

had someone like Silver Surfer Silver Elbow or

some Galactus, but unfortunately they won't be

able to touch upon those because of licensing

stuff. Guardians of the Galaxy, hey, it could

be the worst of the Marvel stuff or it could

be one of the best. It's a really wait and see.

It's going to be hard to tell how they deal with

a character like Groot who's a gigantic tree

or Rocket Raccoon who's a raccoon with a gun.

So I don't know. Well, you know, a giant tree.

I mean, they had a giant cloud already, so I'm

sure they could pull off a giant tree. Yeah,

because that giant cloud went over so well with

the fans. I much prefer the George Takei version.

I'm hungry. Alright, so that's going to do it

for us here in the Origins episode for Moog Revolt

Dan. Coming up next, JT and I finally get to

Superior Spider -Man issues 12 through 15. And

then, who knows, what's gonna happen after that?

I think Steven and I are gonna do Villains Month

from DC and I don't know past that. So, for the

pull bag I've been TF2 and Mike with... I'll

move your revolt down. We will catch you next

time. Make your great escape into comics. You're

boring me. If you wanna help me nail him, get
