sorry that was kind of uncontrollable Wow. Are
you alright? Yeah. Are you sure? There, I think
I'm good. Alright. Hello and welcome to The Pullback.
This is episode 59. I am your host, Steve Giovanmike,
and joining me once again is Steve Megatron.
Hello. Hello! How are you? Doing very well. Yes,
yes. and uh... it seems like it was just a few
episodes ago that we were here talking about
bad books and that's because it was folks it
was about four and a half five episodes ago in
episode fifty five that we talked about the twenty
seven issues we're here now today to talk about
the twenty eight issues and before we do that
there is one book that i do want to briefly mention
uh... for you to look at the crux of the episode
here is uh... Batman and Robin annual number
two written by Peter J Tomaski with art by Doug
Manke I believe is how you pronounce the name
The cover is Batman and Dick Grayson Robin. This
is a year one week one adventure of the original
Robin and it basically starts out with Nightwing
and Dick Grayson is Nightwing and Damien Wayne
is Robin having this conversation. And Dick proceeds
to tell Damien about his first week as Robin.
It's a very heartwarming story. Ladies and gentlemen,
you will not hear me usually talk about Damien
Wayne in a positive light. but this issue really
made me like the character probably the only
time I will ever utter those words because in
general I just don't like him I don't like the
fact that he's constantly the most arrogant guy
in the room for the most part like this kid is
more arrogant than flash and flash is pretty
arrogant at times but it was a nice little touching
story with a nice little roundabout twist At
the end about the villain of the issue, and I
really liked it. I like flashing back now This
is how you tell an origin story One issue 40
pages not 12 issues and God knows how many pages
Yeah I love the art the art is really awesome
Wayne Manor never looked so good I love the character
designs I thought they were all really, really
good. I love the camaraderie between Bruce and
Dick because I can so hear Kevin Conroy and Lauren
Lester from the animated series in my head as
I'm reading it. It was very, very interesting
read. Highly suggest you pick it up even at the
$4 .99 cover price. It's still worth it. What
else have you been reading outside of the bat
books? Have you just been centralizing on those
or you reading picking up any other stuff? I
haven't really been picking up any other stuff,
although I want to Just for the fact that I don't
have the extra income to blow on it right now
I do wish that I did because I Skimmed through
a couple of IDWs transformers regeneration Only
because I used to collect the old Marvel comics
so therefore it is relevant to me. Yes, so I
If it were possible, I mean, I mean obviously
it is but I would I Would pick them up I just
I think at this point because I'm so far behind
and they're about three issues from being done
I think I'm gonna wait Trades. Trades. Because
I really do want to pick it up to complete that
story. I have scans of all of the original Marvel
comics since I, as a kid, when I was younger,
had to sell them all off. I'm not thrilled with
that aspect. But because of that, I don't have...
I don't have them anymore, and I wish I did,
but that's just something I'll have to pick up
when that time comes. But that's definitely one
thing I want to pick up again. I don't really
know of any others offhand that I would collect,
only for the fact that my interests have vastly
shifted. Same here And it's not it's not that
I I'm trying to Hate on certain franchises because
I'm not it's just I don't care about some of
them anymore So, I mean it that's part of it
I don't know. It's just it's it's kind of tough
to decide Any more really what to collect because
a lot of it's just kind of hit or miss Well,
you know I've stated I stated last time in episode
55 I currently get one two three Usually four
or five different Batman titles and I do count
Batgirl and Nightwing as a Even though they are
their own titles. They're part of the bad family,
so I count those So I'm getting currently five
of them With some of the other stuff that DC
is doing like he man of the Masters universe
forever evil Batman Beyond batsick Batman 66
you know I'll still get that kind of stuff, but
almost want to stop getting zero year at this
point and just wait for the ding trades that
are gonna come out for it because Zero year is
just dragging me down. It really really is I
don't really care for the story. I'm one of those
people that if you show me an origin story, I
only need to see it once and That's that whereas
We had the Batman number zero, which I thought
that was supposed to be the new 52 origin of
Batman and then after death of the family They're
like, oh, where can we go from here? Let's let's
do this or this do this 12 -part origin story
here and It's fine There are times where I've
been really excited about it and just I would
say issues 26 and 27 just really just drug me
down I just did not like them, but there is a
silver lining because after what you'll hear
later today in this episode with issue 28 of
Batman I'm very excited I'm more of the the reader
that likes the future stories like oh my god
how did this happen what happened here and then
tell me how it happened so when we get to Batman
28 I will be much more upbeat than I was talking
about 27 and with With Detective Comics, I only
started picking it up because of the zero -year
issue, the tie -in with Commissioner Gordon and
then the Goth -Topia arc that's currently going
through 27 through 29 of that series. And I already
still have Detective Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, so I
will still get Detective, but I won't be getting
it in singles anymore. After issue 29, I'll go
back and grab the trades. But I am liking what
I'm reading so far. Batgirl, obviously, I'll
still get. Nightwing's ending, so that choice
is kind of limited for me. But yeah, that's what's
going on with the both of us as far as our tastes,
and I find that I'm more interested in stuff
that... IDW is coming out with like they're doing
a 24 ongoing series based on the TV series They're
doing Rocky and Bullwinkles coming up Dexter's
lab is coming up. I'm So I'm not just I know
a lot of people say oh the pullback They're just
DC fanboys and they're just this and they're
just that and I try my best on this show to bring
you guys the listeners and the fans enough the
whole Process for me in the show in this podcast
is to give you variety of what I think you might
like or what I think you I might be able to get
you guys to read and yes, it basically started
with DC, but it doesn't mean that it's going
to end with DC because DC right now is just making
me mad all kinds of man all the time So with
that we're gonna get to the bat books 28 issues
after this I'm not really a people person, but
when you need help and you will Alright folks,
first up in the Bat Books 28 issues, we see the
second of the three -part arc, Goftopia Inside
Detective Comics number 28, written by John Layman,
art by Aaron Lopresti. The cover is Batman and
Catburg. I just... weird name for her. weird
superhero name for her first off I have to say
I like the cover yes I like this different rendition
of Batman even though it's similar to a lot of
the stuff in the past it's more of a silvery
Batman and then cat bird which is Catwoman mixed
with night with Robin yes it was interesting
and then it kind of goes through the motions
but it's showing that Batman everybody thinks
Batman's crazy hmm he's an Arkham well the funny
thing is is all the villains are kind of in on
it yeah but they look like to everybody else
they look normal yeah they look like real doctors
whereas Batman knows that they're not yeah and
he's the only one so everybody thinks he's nuts
and being that he built the security system in
Gotham, or in Arkham. He takes all of his little
backdoor tricks, breaks out, and ends up confronting
Ivy, who's the only one immune to this new fear
toxin that Scarecrow comes up with. And it basically,
instead of putting them in fear, it puts them
in this intense... Calm because it shows them
everything that they wish everything was So it
gives them this intense calm and so when he does
use his fear toxin It sends them actually to
the loony bin and fries their brain So that's
Scarecrow's whole plan in that but Batman ceiling
went immune to it at this point and Poison Ivy.
Poison Ivy, yeah. It was nice seeing them team
up, and it's nice seeing them do banter back
and forth on that second page from the beginning.
When you see the doctors on the other side, I'm
like, okay, there's something up with this. These
have to be, before I even looked on the next
page to see Batman's description of the doctors
and showing you the real identities of them.
As soon as I saw the pigtails behind the glass,
I'm like, yeah, there's something definitely
up with this, because you just can't show Harley
with pigtails and not realize, hey, look, it's...
I only know Mr. Professor Pig from the Beware
the Batman cartoon. As do I. I don't think I've
ever seen that villain before, so if listeners
want to comment on this episode and let us know
where Mr. Hello, Mr. Pig. It's Mr. Pig! Yeah,
I keep wanting to emulate Pumba from The Lion
King. They call me Mr. Pig! Yeah, but anyway,
Professor Pig, if listeners will comment on this
episode, let me know where the villain comes
from, because I've only ever seen him used in
the board in the Batman cartoon and comic until
this issue here in Detective, so... um i absolutely
love the art i think that's awesome i think it's
really cool you got croc as a janitor mop the
floor yeah i think that's really really awesome
but like i said i love the art i really do like
how you know you were saying about that batman's
cowl and his actually the only thing that's really
black on him are his gloves and his like you
know skater shin pads and stuff like that and
obviously his cape but i really do love the gray
silverish look and especially uh next to cat
bird uh with her black and red look i i really
do like the the the contrast between them oh
yeah uh it's really really cool um i wish i had
i don't know You or somebody else can do this
if they want, but I really wish I had the image
of the page where Batman says Encoded myself
a back door and you see him running away. I love
that shot of him running away It's kind of cool.
He's not running. He's running. I'm not saying
he's running away I'm just saying that the way
that the artist has imposed it. It's a really
really cool image um overall i really enjoyed
this issue i enjoyed even though i was a little
negative on detective 27 last time around i did
still enjoy the goth topia story the part one
of goth topia and see this is how you do a three
-part arc you don't make the middle issue just
as boring as hell uh you make it exciting to
lead up into the finale and um when I read Batgirl
last month it was like tune into Detective 28
to see the outcome of Barbara Gordon and the
last page of this is why not ask your friends
next fear family and it's Batwoman Batwoman I
believe that's Catwoman and Batgirl with all
Scarecrow masks on And I'm like, oh my god, where
is this title gonna go? It's so awesome. Absolutely
love detector 28 Storytelling is very well done.
The art is is amazing Absolutely enjoyable book
All right, did you have a chance to check out
batgirl 20 no, no, oh you missed out on something
really really awesome. Well, I Know you have
this affinity and love for bad girl. I just don't
care for I Really don't it's it's nothing against
the character per se I just I I don't I don't
get into her whole Thing I don't know Fans of
Twilight should not have picked this book up
The cover is done by Alex Gardner and it's introducing
a new villain introducing silver the vampires
of Gotham will he destroy the vampires of Gotham
and it's basically him with a silver pistol with
a vampire -ish like Batgirl over top of him like
she's ready to pounce absolutely love that color
that cover from Alex Gardner The story here is
is this guy seems to this guy silver seems to
think that all that the entire bat family and
Gotham are real vampire bats Yeah, that's just
crazy talk Yeah, I know it's crazy talk, but
the guy's crazy so but basically he has All of
their their superhero identities, Batman, Nightwing,
Damien, even though Damien has an axe on his
head since obviously he's dead, Batgirl and Commissioner
Gordon. And the story goes, no, it's a good story.
No, I'm saying how is he gonna know who they
all are? No, no, no, no, I'm saying that in the
image... He has a picture he on his computer
screen. He has images of Batman Nightwing Robin
Batgirl and Commissioner Gordon all the superheroes
are in costume Except for Dick Grayson since
his identity was already revealed in forever
evil so I'm not saying that Silver knows their
secret identities. I'm saying that he has pictures
of them in the costumes on his computer so he
basically goes out hunting and and Batgirl is
also looking for several people and She runs
into Strix the Talon The last time we saw her
was back in annual number one for Batgirl And
the relationship between these two they are friends
Strix is Something happened to her when when
the court of owls took her and she doesn't talk
so It was really interesting to see how the art
and the writing from Gail's you know the the
art from Fernando passer and colors by clapping
Jonathan clapping on Along with Gail writing
it was interesting to see how well the two of
them teamed up and it's basically like Sticks
because she can't talk she has to play charades,
and she has to point and try to get her Try to
try to you know make that girl understand that
way And it's a very very cool concept This issue
was just an absolute delight to read it was really
really fun They actually team up as a pair of
That girl falsifies them as Gotham City detectives
and they team up to go to them because they have
to find this missing girl In this missing girl
Apparently silver the villain seems to believe
that she is the vampire queen for some reason
We don't know why it's not really it's not really
Not really explained in this this first part
of the story art but uh... uh... it's it's interesting
and gail actually does poke fun at twilight so
it's not silver being all sparkly he uh... yeah
so and next the conspiracy of bats no i you know
it's just one of those things where my my love
for batgirl Obviously stems from DC animated
universe from BTIS new Batman adventures Batman
Beyond stuff like that and you know I used to
love her in the 66 Adam West series with Yvonne
Craig playing the role of Barbara Gordon bad
girl and You know people might say oh new 52
she gets her legs back That's such a croc and
whatever else I thought it was great because
yes Well, I knew of the killing joke and I knew
what the Joker did to her and I knew that she
became Oracle I didn't really grasp the whole
thing So when the new 52 when I got into comics,
thanks to you. So technically this is all your
damn fault. When I got into it, I'm like, oh,
this is so cool. She's recovered. She's working
her way back. She's finding her way back to becoming
the alter ego she once was. And ever since then,
it's just been a thrill ride for me because Batgirl...
As a title is not just a superhero book. It is
a psychological superhero book You know I said
in my spoiler -free review of this issue. I have
no idea how Gail Simone keeps you know Basically
pulling the rug out from under me every time
I read one of these issues With the stories that
she's writing. It's it's absolutely amazing so
All right here we go Nightwing 28, Kyle Higgins
second to last issue. Now, when I first saw the
cover to 28, which is basically a whole bunch
of hands reaching out to basically strangle Nightwing,
I'm like, oh no, this is where Forever Evil catches
up. This is not good. Stuff's gonna hit the fan,
everything else. The art in this issue is done
by Russell Dauterman. And the art is, you know,
I've sung the praises of Eddie Barrows, the original
artist, I've sung the praises of Brit Booth,
of Will Conrad. All very, very well done artists.
There are a couple of moments in Booth's and
Conrad's runs where something might have looked
a little off to me, but nothing to... destroy
my enjoyment of reading the story and Kyle's
writing is still top -notch the opening panel
is basically Batgirl is flying tackle leaping
him and they are both falling to the city street
below and the caption is okay I can explain and
then you flip the page and he says or maybe It's
not what it looks like, would be better. So,
this isn't really Batgirl. This is a new villain,
or an old villain maybe. A guy calls himself
Spinebender. Now, again, I'm not sure. Again
fans, please comment on the episode Let me know
if spinebender has been around before this is
the first I've ever heard of him now I do know
that spinebender might the name might be a takeoff
of spell binder from Batman Beyond But spinebender
is basically the male mystique of the DC universe
at this point. He is a shape -shifter He can
shift into all kinds of shapes. He turns into
Batgirl. He turns into Batman I think at one
point he turns into Damian as Robin and The whole
first half of the issue is basically Nightwing
trying to get away from this guy trying to stop
this guy from basically attacking him And the
battle ends and and what happens here I want
you to know you have every right to hold what
you're holding against me Yeah, basically Spidenbender
kind of blows up a little bit and then the rest
of the story is We flash to the jail and we find
that Tony Zuko is in jail and his daughter Sonya
comes to visit him And then last issue in 27
the little girl Jen Figured out that Dick Grayson
is Nightwing because she found his secret floorboard
stash of his uniform and everything else so they
are They they've been Dick and his roommates
have been babysitting her and Basically this
this issue is Kyle tying up all the loose ends
This is really what it is. He ties up the loose
ends with Sonya. He kind of ties up the loose
ends with Tony Zuko And then there's this whole
thing with this Jen character this little kid
character that she She knows the secret and It
basically it's trying to Mimic Dick's life is
what Kyle is trying to do because a new villain
called Zazz I believe like I could be saying
that long Is he really? Okay, well he's back.
He's back and he basically kills Jen's parents.
And because she knows Dick's secret, she wants
to join him, help him take this guy down. She
wants to become his female Robin. and it basically
ends with and what I love about DC and some of
their stuff and how they lay out their books
is like in detective we got got we got the the
credits part of the comic like in the very beginning
like the second or third page where it said goth
topia part two of three the title for this one
doesn't happen until the last page that it could
happen. It says Butterfly Effects, and then it
reveals Mr. Zazz, and it says next, the end.
So, I have no idea what to expect for the last
issue for Kyle. Dotterman on a heart. This issue
is absolutely amazing. The story, again, Kyle
writes amazing Nightwing stories. He really does.
Absolutely loved it. It was really really good
so next up Let's go to the future we have Batman
28 the main cover is a jail cell and if you turn
the book 90 degrees You can see that the keyhole
is of a bat Hmm and it says a secret glimpse
into Batman eternal Written by Snyder and James
Jenny in the fourth art by Dustin and Jen and
Derek Fridolph's You know what folks as much
as as much negativity as I give zero year I cannot
wait for Batman eternal after reading this just
Cannot wait Because it is so awesome basically
we have Gotham soon and apparently there's a
curfew now and the police are going to enforce
the curfew on Harper Rowe now I didn't really
care for Harper all that much when she appeared
back in Batman was it what issue was it 18 or
19 one of them issues might have been Yeah, cuz
it was after death of the family it was those
yeah, it was Batman 18 Wow, the Requiem issue
for Damien when he died She appeared there and
I kind of basically didn't really didn't like
her didn't hate her just kind of okay So this
has her Trying to find the new kingpin of Gotham
City because someone is organizing the crime
in Gotham and I love the art here because you
actually have You actually have her going up
to this very very large old white man But I mean
largest he's both tall and wide and he does kind
of resemble Marvel's kingpin He says I'm he says
I'm not the boss I'm not here to help you. I'm
here to hurt you. So yeah, you Yeah, I'm the
muscle. Yeah And apparently Harper is working
with Batman And she is blue bird. I will say
that this whole when we originally saw this design
for Harper supposedly at the time supposedly
the new Nightwing I was like oh hell no they
better not do Nightwing like that but since she's
her technically her own character and she has
her own name for her superhero I kind of dig
it I'm really like I the whole time I read Batman
28 I was like yes bring it on give me more absolutely
loved it What are some of your thoughts about
28? I thought it was kind of interesting how
they handled the whole Harper Row. I'm not a
huge fan of her, but how they handled it in this
aspect I'm fine with. So yeah, I mean I I don't
know I I like the fact that for one they've gone
back to their roots with having a legitimate
Storyline Mm -hmm So, I mean in that aspect I'm
glad that they're you know that they're jumping
ahead to present time Yes And I do like that
Harper as Bluebird has her own style of quips
and Like like where they're good guys, you know,
okay everybody last call and then the reveal
of the kingpin of crime It's Selena Kyle. Did
you expect that at all? Not really So yeah, it's
basically Selena versus Batman. They have a long
diatribe Conversation is actually really really
good. It kind of reminds me of Batman returns
a little bit and how Michael Keaton Batman and
Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman had their back -and
-forth play but you can definitely tell something
is Absolutely different about this new future
for for Batman and the end of the issue we have
uh... uh... her name is stephanie brown she calls
herself spoiler and she's the only one of the
city who knows how to stop what's coming next
so yes definitely browns back everybody that
knew about her in the first place can rejoice
uh... i personally don't give a rat's ass This
says the story begins in Batman eternal number
one on sale this April so after reading this
issue I'm really stoked for eternal As someone
who had never read Stephanie Brown beforehand
I'm alright with With her coming back into the
new 52 because I have zero exposure to her. I
want to know more about her So I'm interested
that way same thing with Harper Rowe As long
as they weren't going to basically make Harper
a female Nightwing, I was going to be more than
happy. And I really was. Batman 28, absolutely
enjoyed every minute of it. It was a fun ride,
it was a fun glimpse, and it really got me stoked
for Batman Eternal. I can't wait for that now.
And next month we go back to boring on zero year
yep boring boring boring So any of the thoughts
on Batman 28 No, I mean it's it's overall a good
issue and I'm sure fan favorites will Like the
fact that they brought back Stephanie Brown,
so yeah Like you know, like I said, I like the
whole mysteriousness of it of How did all this
happen? How is Catwoman now in charge of the
Gotham underground and the Gotham criminal element?
I want to know more about that. So that's what
I'm really stoked about for for Batman eternal
You know, I Don't know. I just I really loved
all the books that I read this month. I thought
they were all great I can't wait to see what
the conclusion is for detective. I can't wait
to see more of this new arc in Batgirl obviously
the ending of Nightwing is coming up and You
know I'll stay open to the final chapter of Dark
City, but the only thing is I know that issue
is supposed to be double -sized and I'm not really
excited about that, but I'm not really excited
about paying more money for a book. Yeah. No,
no. So. All right. We're going to take a quick
break and hear some ads. We're going to come
back with final thoughts, ratings, and everything
else after this. Hey, Keycast listeners. Do you
ever listen to Punisher body count and think
to yourself? This show would be awesome if it

point. Yes, so what you want to do to find us,

.com, and remember, the Force will be with you,
because knowing us is half the battle. So we
are back alright, so I know you're not gonna
be able to rate some of these since you didn't
read some But detective, what do you give it?
Overall I'd probably give it a 8 out of 10 just
it it was kind of It was good for the most part
it just parts of it were kind of predictable
My interest is waning you can tell really it's
active. I'm just comics in general For me For
me, I'm gonna give it a five out of five, which
is perfect on the GCN Universal scale I loved
everything about the art was great. The writing
the story just ramps up in this issue For Batgirl
and Nightwing, I'm gonna give both of those a
five, as per usual. The writing, the art, there
wasn't too many things about either one of them
that would cause me to take off a point. Batman,
I'm gonna give a five. I absolutely loved it
because it's just one of those things that, as
I said at the beginning of the show, I prefer
these future storylines to origin stories. And
just the twists and the turns and how they're
gonna Where are they gonna go and how are they
gonna deal with it after this absolutely loved
it? What about you own Batman? I love the fact
that they're going back to the future It's a
lot more interesting for me when They they do
it that way rather than going back in the past
so I it actually made me want the issue yeah
whereas it's gonna be increasingly difficult
for me to scoot past uh zero year and being the
completionist that i am i have to have the rest
of it in order to get to the next saga well even
though i don't want to pay for it not necessarily
i mean yeah you do have to get the rest of batman
to get past zero year but for this story 28 since
it's a glimpse into eternal eternal is a brand
new brand new year -long series Oh, I know and
I'm looking so bad. Yeah But yeah, I see your
point about having a weight weight through zero
year like it was a very very steamy swamp You
know, I don't know like I said I'm super stoked
for eternal and I'm liking how Kyle is wrapping
up Nightwing. I just wish it wasn't ending because
I enjoy it so much. With all these changes in
the DC universe, there's going to be major changes
in how the pullbag covers the Batbooks. I do
know since Batman... I always called it Batman
Weekly. Surprised they didn't even call it that
themselves with Batman eternal being a weekly
series coming out for four straight weeks in
April I do know that the first episode in May
of the bat books or We might just do it as a
separate episode on set the bat books coverage
and said the pullback is gonna change Dramatically
we may not depending on what zero year does this
style of Batgirl Nightwing Batman Any other titles
that are bat related may not be a bat books episode
because I do know that I will be taking Batgirl
out of the mix and Kind of branching her off
into her own separate episodes because I'm just
not enjoying zero year enough And you already
said your interest in general in comics is waning
So I'm trying to figure out a way to still continue
to cover the stuff that I enjoy Without having
to wade through a bunch of crap So, like I said,
Batman Eternal will be its own episode coming
up in May. The rest of it, I'm still working
