About this Episode

Mike "Birdman" Dodd traces his journey into comics fandom, starting with a He-Man Easter basket in 1987 and moving through decades of collecting. He discusses his early influences including Wizard Magazine, the Clone Saga, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Spawn, then explores how he reconnected with comics through Green Lantern, IDW properties like Transformers and My Little Pony, and character-driven titles. The conversation also touches on DC's New 52 era, Villains Month, and Dick Grayson's identity reveal in Nightwing.

Good evening. This is snapper car reporting.

We can't even get the 30th episode of the pull

bag started without breaking news Daredevil is

Batman Mike Dodd your thoughts, you know what

when I heard this way back at the end of August

I was like, you know what that's Not impossible

And you know why because Mike we've been here

before we all said and wha And halfway as Catwoman,

fuck that. Do you remember on Twig many, many

moons ago when I said Heath Ledger is the Joker?

Yeah, fucking right. I wonder if this will be

that again. I don't see the. I'm not going to

go too far into my thoughts of the casting of

Ben Affleck as Batman, but I'm going to make

some generalizations here. Batman to me is you

need to find someone that works and stick with

that. However, over the years since the 89 film,

since the first live -action Tim Burton film,

outside of that and returns, they've decided,

and outside of the Nolan trilogy, every new Batman

movie has to have a new actor as Batman. I hate

that. I know everyone hates Val Kilmer as Batman,

and I agree. He is a horrible Batman, but...

He did do a damn good job as Bruce Wayne. With

Ben Affleck, I don't know, what other thoughts

do you have on this? Because the only thing I

can think of now is, park your car in Harvard

Yard, park the Batmobile over here, you know?

It's just, ugh, God, all I can see is, I can

see the scene from Goodwill Hunting. Your position

for you would greatly increase if I had... $200

in my hand right now fucking Chuckie from good

will hunting. That's all I can see Ben Affleck

has had some Good movies. There are a lot of

movies that I liked from him, but I don't know

Well, he's done some really good work with like

gone baby gone. He did the town He's a really

good director as for an actor if you give him

the right role I mean, I really liked him as

daredevil he to me he wasn't a bad matt murdoch

but he wasn't daredevil with this thing because

it depends on which direction they want to take

man of steel to or batman whatever the fuck they're

gonna call it it doesn't work with with christian

bale and that and and that i think it would have

been a better choice to cash josh brolin as bruce

wayne slash batman but if they're gonna give

us something more akin to world's finest, this

may not be a bad choice. I want to see him in

the costume, and I want to see a teaser trailer.

I am reserving my judgments until I see Affleck

in the costume. Yeah. Other thing we need to

bring up, and we would have brought up three

episodes ago here in the pullback with Steve

and I talking about, Steve Megatron and I talking

about this, is after Daredevil, Ben said, and

he made it public, I don't ever want to be in

superhero tides ever again so when someone offers

you batman you don't say no no and i understand

i get that but like i'm hoping with this new

universe that snider has created uh... starting

with man of steel and going forward whatever

their whatever warner brothers in dc is going

to do i'm hoping that they don't have they don't

resort to the same problems we had 20 30 years

ago where you know in the first Batman movie

Michael Keaton was like I Get move my neck and

they changed the costume to fit him I'm hoping

that when they do the costume for Affleck they

do it to fit his body as well as obviously you

know being true to to Batman I have no idea what

kind of bat costume they're gonna use because

if man of steel is any indication they don't

they care but they don't care about costume consistency

yeah i mean i'm kind of hoping they go with something

a little less looking like armor like they did

with the kind of nolan stuff i'm hoping for something

a little bit more fun is what i'll say but not

goofy you heard it here first people mike dodd

wants bat nipples that's right i want a bat ass

crack oh my Which I think they did, so never

mind. Can I have a car? Chicks dig the car. This

is why Superman works alone. Alright, we're gonna

take a quick break here in the pull bag and we're

gonna get to what we actually came here to do

after this. Welcome to The Pull Bag. We dig out

our latest comics and discuss them with the rotating

look at me. I'm not putting them up to it. They

just keep talking about me. You know, I think

you ought to get him some help. He seems to be

really hung up on superhero sex organs. You're

loud growing. Okay. Like the Birdman Dodd was

cutting in and out there was apparently a storm

in his area So if you hear him cut it in and

out, there's not much I can do about it in the

editing process now on with the pull bag So we

are back here in the pull bag and as you heard

in that brief news Discussion type thing. I am

of course Steve John Mike Joining me is Mike

the Birdman Dodd from this week in geek net and

all the other stuff he does What have you been

up to? It's it's September already. Can we get

some some September weather, please? Well myself

I've been actually I took a little bit of time

off during the summer to Spend time with my wife.

I'm like, oh, yeah, I'm married. Maybe I should

do something like married stuff I've been playing

a lot of video games, actually. I finally got

around to playing Earthbound for the Super Nintendo.

Fantastic game. Really having a great time with

that. I've been rediscovering my love of the

Wii U, actually, over the last couple of months,

actually. Really getting into it. Other than

that, I've been playing with them over on These

Warriors Are Terrible, the role -playing podcast

that Steve's in charge of. the co -pilot on this

one so less responsibility for me for a change

um so yeah i i've been doing that and also kind

of going back and rediscovering my anime roots

uh me and scotty were launching this new show

we haven't got a name for it yet as of this recording

where we watched the first episode of an anime

or telven show or whatever do we like it enough

to keep going And I've seen some really cool

shit in the last couple of weeks, so I'm pretty

excited about getting to do that more often.

Awesome, awesome. And for those of you that don't

know what the Pull Bag Origins episodes are,

it's me basically grilling people I know, people

I've interacted with on the internet, people

that are my friends online, about how they got

started reading comics. Now, you... I've known

you since, what, 2008? Yeah, around late 2007,

early 2008. Yeah. I have heard you talk in brief

about, like every so often about comics, or you'll

make references, but I don't think I've ever

heard you talk about in detail why you enjoy

or why you don't enjoy the comics that you read

or collect. So I figured, OK, it's the 30th episode.

Go big, go home, whatever. And we're here to

figure out how and why you became a comic fan.

So take us back to the beginning. Is it a family

member, a dad, an uncle, a grandfather? Who got

you into comics, Mike? Well, my earliest memory

with comics, this is only the first one that

I owned. I remember it was an Easter Sunday,

probably around 1987, if I remember correctly.

I got a He -Man comic in my Easter basket, and

I wish I could remember what happened in it,

but I remember getting that. That was a very

early memory. Then I was in probably grade six

or seven. My dad gave me a bunch of old comics

from the 60s and 70s. They were like DC comics.

They were like, I think it was like the Legion

of Superheroes or like Saturn Lad and Lightning

Last and all this shit. God, I'm wishing I kept

those in retrospect. Um They weren't in terrible

condition, but not great either and then it wasn't

until I really got in the comics around I'd say

probably I was just coming in the high school

about 90 96, 97. And I read something called

Wizard Magazine. Wizard Magazine, for those of

you that don't know, it was sort of the insider's

guide to comics, what was going on with different

artists, authors, artists, et cetera, et cetera.

They'd also talk about toys and video games occasionally.

And I just started reading that and I started

checking out other comics as well. I mean, I

remember buying X -Men number one with the cover

by Jim Lee at of this really random comic -con

we had in my hometown of Owens Sound. It was

for one day, it was a Sunday at the Legion. I

remember this so weirdly clearly and I bought

that and I remember buying a couple of the variant

covers for different books because I thought

they were cool. Now, I really couldn't follow

X -Men because Comics in the 90s had this wonderful

bastardization of, hey, let's spread our storylines

across 12 other different books. I think it's

hard to follow. Fuck you. And, um. Oh, they still

do that today, right? Not as much as they did

in the 90s. The 90s almost killed the comics

industry. Yeah. And I started getting into it

more and more. And it's weird. This brought me

into comics pretty hardcore for a long time.

It was oddly enough, you're gonna love this,

Mike. You're gonna have your ass off. The Clone

Saga. Oh, Christ. Because I thought the Scarlet

Spider was one of the coolest looking costumes.

Oh, that Clone Saga. I thought you were talking

about the other Clones. No, it's weird because

I remember everybody was raging so hardcore about

this. They're like... fuck you Ben Reilly's not

spider -man and all this other stupid shit but

it really got me interested and then I started

following another storyline that was happening

around that time called uh onslaught and heroes

reborn and then I just I frankly I got lost I

tried to do it couldn't do it although I always

kept following the sonic the hedgehog comics

by Archie uh specifically because the cover artist

i think his name was harvo spaz harvo or something

like that fantastic artist and the issue i remember

specifically was issue 39 and 40 Where it was

Mecha Sonic versus Mecha Knuckles and it was

fucking cool. I remember that so much me and

my friend Ryan at the time had me so hardcore

into it and I think I followed Sonic from issue

one till probably about 65 then I'm like, okay,

I've had a good run and then I would randomly

pick up trade paperbacks every now and again,

if there's a storyline that caught my interest,

like the Infinity Gauntlet or Days of Future

Past or Maximum Carnage or something like that.

And... How days can be a trade? Because it's

only two comics. It's only two issues. Well,

there's other things that happen around that

that kind of all that tie together all the different...

Realities and bringing over Betsy Braddock and

all that shit. It got really fucking weird for

a while And yeah, I just I the thing that really

got me in the comics was not so much the books

themselves it was the characters and Mike you

probably remember as I don't know what whether

you watch it. Do you remember when HBO had the

spawn series? Yes. I got so hardcore in the spawn.

Once I saw the movie, I was like, I have this

real knack of anything that grosses me out. I

have a very low gag reflex. Anything that grosses

me out, I consider horror. I know Spawn is not

horror, I understand that, but just anything

that freaks me, like Blade to me, Blade is almost

a horror movie. I know it isn't, I understand

that, but it's just one of those things. Once

I saw the Spawn movie and I saw John Leguizamo...

Ugh, God, no. He was better as Luigi, as bad

as the Mario Brothers movie is. Ugh, he's like

a wicked violator. Do what? He was too goofy

as the violator, but I - Yeah, yeah. You needed,

oh god, can you imagine if Ron Perlman was the

file leader and then going on to do Hellboy?

I remember just falling in love with the Spawn

character, the universe. I watched the series.

I had the special unrated edition of the tape,

which took me forever to track down. I'm not

even sure whether the copy I have on my hard

drive is the really good one movie I remember

seeing in theaters. And I just kind of gravitated

towards comics. more so than the books are really

long time, though that's changed recently. I

remember tracking down the Generation X movie

with Matt Frewer. It was on Fox years ago. There

was a David Hasselhoff movie where he played

Nick Fury. Nick Fury, agent of S .H .I .E .L

.D. It's so hard to find the Roger Corman Fantastic

Four. I've seen it on sale, but I've never had

the money on me at the time to buy it. And then

the X -Men movies happened. for me, and kind

of reignited my interest in the movies and the

comics as well. I started to follow, this was

around the house of M, so I think we're talking

2005 here, 2004. I started to follow, there was

a five -issue mini -series called The 198, so

I started following that from my local comic

book guy, this awesome dude, if you live in the

Owen Sound area or in Ontario, it was called

Mike's Bookstore in Owen Sound, and he would

try me out on different books. So I started,

and I'm kicking myself in the fucking teeth for

this. I had one of the original Walking Dead

number ones. Oh, wow. You know how much that's

worth now? Well, after the success of the show

and the ongoing success of the series in comic

form, yeah. You dumbass. I could have paid that.

Yeah. And I realized it might last year because

I was going through my comic books as I was purging

and I'm like, all right, I got a Walking Dead

in here. It's not here. And it was a pain breaking

moment. But I remember jumping back on with comics

around the House of M. I remember buying the

trade for that. Thought that was really fucking

cool. And I'd say I really I really got back

in the comics more so than I have at any other

point in my life to worry about now is I went

to college. back in 2006 and I'd just been dumped

by my fiance. So I got $4 ,000 burning a hole

in my pocket because that was the communal wedding

money. And if you think I'm giving you so you

can go fuck your new boyfriend, you got another

thing coming. So I went to the bookstore and

I saw the Marvel encyclopedia, the DC encyclopedia.

I saw all the age of apocalypse trades. Walked

up to the counter. That'll be $500. No problem.

have yourself a fantastic day. And I just remember

buying up old trade paperbacks. Like Mike, I've

got a shelf. I'm about six feet tall. My shelf

is four feet double -sided of just trade paperbacks.

Wow. Oh my God, like I used to collect Star Wars,

anything that was horror. I just recently sold

off my Friday the 13th Nightmare on Elm Street

horror collection comics. And I just, I really

realized I'm not so much a guy that's interested

in the mainline DC or Marvel universes. I like

stuff that's based on properties. Like I remember

reading the Ninja Turtle stuff. Like I've mentioned

Sonic the Hedgehog before. I tried to keep up

a spawn and then it got weird when he killed

God and it just got fucking stupid. And then

I just decided, you know what, I'm going to read

what I want to read. So I started reading the

Ghostbusters comics. It was put up by a company

called 88 mile per hour studios. They only put

out like four issues. They never finished the

series, which really pissed me off because the

artwork was so fantastic in it. I kept reading

the Transformers Dreamwave stuff. I still have

an almost complete run of that. I think I'm missing

one convention cover from that, from all their

series. That was a lot of fun. That was one series

that I followed a lot was the Dreamwave stuff.

I remember I went on vacation to go visit a girlfriend

at the time out in Edmonton. And there was this

huge complex store in the Edmonton mall, which

is one of the largest malls in the world, by

the way. And I bought this Transformers encyclopedia.

So I started going out and buying the old Marvel

books. I started going out buying the stuff that

was printed in the UK for Transformers Christ

that shits weird. Um, and it's the UK. What do

you expect? So beyond strings are like there

These are the wreckers and we're gonna eat Galvatron

with these bugs. It was fucking weird Then more

recently as I went through college I would pick

up the odd tree paperback here and then I was

a huge Green Lantern fan. I've worn a Green Lantern

ring for the better part of seven years. I'm

now wearing a Sinestro core ring with my Green

Lantern ring. So I started reading the Green

Lantern stuff and I got in just at the beginning

of Darkest Night or Blackest Night rather and

I kept following that and then One of my fans

who became one of my friends through Review A

Day, Rachel, bought me the trade paperback for

it. And I'm like, you know what? Comics are cool

again. I'm going to give them a try again. So

one of the other people that I work with, Laura,

over on the Untitled Mike and Laura project,

she's a manager at a comic book store. So she

tells me one. He's like, hey, Dodd, I've got

this giant sale going on where it's buy one,

get one free. on all trade paperbacks. And I'm

like, well, we're part way through the new 52.

What do you got? And she recommends me Animal

Man, Swamp Thing, Red Lantern, Green Lantern.

I think it's Green Lantern Core or something

like that. Yeah, Green Lantern Core, Green Lantern

New Guardians, and Green Lantern are the three

current Green Lantern books because one is Hal,

one is Jon Stewart, the other is Kyle. So I started

reading the ones that were half -pile for sure.

I just really got into it and I followed the

Red Lantern books for like, man, must have been

like almost a year. And then I just kind of fell

out of it again. But recently I've actually been

buying more comics because luckily one of the

people I do another podcast with on This Week

in Geek is a show called Beyond the Gauntlet.

Chris, he's like one of my best friends, owns

a comic book store. I can walk in there. It's

like a fucking library. And it's so cool. He's

got me back in this. In fact, I still have my

box, which I haven't had a chance to read yet.

So here's what I'm currently reading right now.

I'm actually going to read this to you in real

time. I have the - Season 10. He -Man, The Masters

of the Universe. Fantastic art on this series,

by the way. Is that the new ongoing? I also got

Sonic Universe, which is Sonic the Hedgehog and

Megaman. Yeah, cool superior carnage because

carnage is fucking awesome The salt the hedgehog

crossover Ghostbusters. I'm reading Dark horse

I'll read more superior carnage my little pony

by IW fantastically Well written series. It's

not it doesn't talk down to you. It's much like

the show and The variant covers you get are fantastic

I'm reading injustice gods among us based upon

the video game I bought a couple of the walking

dead trades as well. So I'm trying to get caught

up the current I'm about think issue 84 right

now and where I am with comics I like trades

more because I don't like having a story piecemealed

out to me but now that I have this great access

to books whenever I want and I can I'm usually

a couple days ahead of time I'm really loving

getting back in the comics again for a change

see with me and I've said this before on the

show we're for 30 episodes into this thing and

I always have to repeat this for me I do both.

I get single and I get trades because what I'll

do is I will take the singles and trade them

in for credit at my shop or at the shop that

I go to. So, but I have to have singles because

I need to know right now what the hell is going

on specifically for Batgirl and Nightwing from

DC. IDW I'm reading. three out of the five transformers

series rid more than meets the robots in disguise

more than meets the eye and transformers prime

rage about beast hunters so But yeah, I mean

trades are So much better than singles like there's

an episode of the pullback it was one of those

superior spider -man episodes that we did where

JT and I go through four issues of superior spider

-man and I just broke down and I was like, fuck

this. How many fucking ads can you put in between

a friggin' story? It's like a 40 page book, 32

pages of it is story, the rest of it's ads, but

sometimes in Marvel it seems like every other

page is an ad. It's like, holy crap. Part of

the reason why I like smaller, independent books,

because you don't get as much of that, mind you.

Well, with IDW, they put their ads or their solicits

for the next issue or what's coming up. They

put all that stuff at the end. They don't put

an ad in the middle. And they don't have ads,

like DC has ads for... I'm not knocking the show,

but what is it? Comedy Bang Bang on IFC? They

have ads for Midtown Comics in New York and all

this and all that. IDW, their ads are basically

their solicits for other stuff they're publishing.

I hate to say this because I like DC Comics,

but IDW is not sellouts. It's it's a changing

world, too. And this is a discussion I've had

with my local comic book guy is how does digital

affect all this stuff? I I honestly don't know

because you think about it. You can get your

comics digital on the go or you can get the print

version. The digital is cheaper. But if you buy

the print, should you not get the digital book

anyway? Sort of thing. And I'm sure I. It's going

digital. I know Marvel has this whole augmented

reality shit tried it yet and because mostly

because I And I don't like the idea of scanning

QR codes to unlock exclusive content cuz you

know what that's more effort on my behalf Just

yeah, tell me here's the website go here Cool.

I'm awesome with that. I am currently I Started

like big into comics last year with death of

the family from DC It's all Steve Megatron's

fault. He's the one that got me hardcore in and

I just I'm one of those people when I go in on

something It's like ooh, what else can it's kind

of like you with your franchises like for me

Transformers Ninja Turtles You know Batman Nightwing

background, you know I go I go by character base

and I I'm a person that I need to physically

have a copy in my hand I need to be able to look

through whether it's a trade whether it's a single

issue, whatever and i was extremely against digital

but i'll tell you since batman beyond unlimited

became batman beyond universe and kyle higgins

the writer current writer of nightwing uh from

dc has taken over batman beyond universe i've

signed up for comixology and i'm getting that

book every other saturday that it comes out because

it is so damn good one of the books that really

caught my attention but i don't get a chance

as much as i like is the my little pony series

specifically the micro series yeah the micro

series that idw does are so awesome because they're

character based there i think the my little pony

one is i think it's six or seven or might be

ongoing but each issue is like twilight or fluttershy

or pinky pie or it's one story for that character

it's not a consistent ongoing, which they do

have the ongoing, which is great. But I love

that IDW does microseries. That's awesome. And

it's seriously something that really gets me

into the character. I like how they also seem

longer. I seem longer than other people that

are out there. Maybe I don't know whether that's

true or not, but for what length of book for

IDW? Well, they are because there's no ads, Mike.

Yeah, it's just You're you're breaking up very

badly. Sorry. There's there's a storm going on.

Oh Nice, hopefully the power doesn't cut um,

but yeah, there's just something about the smaller

companies like IDW or Dynamite press you get

really fucking cool shit. I mean, I just recently

I've been working with this company called and

they produce a book called Which is based upon

the RPG which is written by a guy I know named

Jim Zubkiewicz who did a lot of does a lot of

artwork for Strider for Udom. He also wrote a

series called Skull Kickers and the thing that

makes me love this book is the fact every month

you get stats and numbers and maps that you can

pull out and take out for use in your Pathfinder

game. It seems really gimmicky, but the fact

I've new encounter maps. They also sent me a

trade paperback that Pathfinder source book.

It's hard bound. It looks just like a Pathfinder

book. I'd buy like Ultimate Campaign or Ultimate

Monster Manual and it fits right in with everything.

And right at the end, here's all the stats, towns,

here's all the monsters, everything you need.

I love the comics are crossing this barrier.

between being entertainment and something more

and this is better than any marvel augmented

reality shit once again i could very well be

wrong but this is fucking cool i love it um and

just the fact that it's it's a neat story and

the fact that i'm doubting multiple things from

superheroes to pinky pie to swords and sorcery

a good time to be in comics right now plus the

fact getting that over bloating where so many

books are crossing into each other i mean there

was some crossover with the blackest night but

now that we're in new 52 it's less goofy like

like that although i'm a little leery because

it's september it's villains month aka the the

month of the one shot so yeah see how this pans

out i don't know i mean Can we talk about this

major spoiler thing involving Robin? Can we talk

about that? You mean Nightwing? What's the big

fucking deal? Nightwing, Dick Grayson. Okay,

yeah, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Mike Dodd wants

to talk about Dick. Okay, so I talked about this

with Steve Megatron on episode 27 of the show,

but the big thing with Nightwing with Dick Grayson

is that... There The original rumor was They're

gonna kill him and I'm sorry. I respect the guy

I'm sorry even before I heard him on Kevin Smith's

fat man on Batman I always can't call Dan to

do Dan to dildo and it even Resonates further

with me now that I found out he's always had

a hard on for getting rid of Nightwing who is

my favorite male DC character in the comics I

thought they were gonna kill him. Okay. I don't

want that to happen that would suck and Then

I thought oh wait No, they better not have somebody

shoot him and put him in a wheelchair and change

him to a different friggin Oh wait, they already

did that with the female character and now it's

been revealed that They're going to reveal Dick

Grayson's identity Why Why would you do something

like this? Because it is so fucking stupid. If

people know Dick Grayson is Nightwing, it doesn't

take a super genius to figure out, oh, Dick Grayson's

Nightwing, he used to be Robin. That means Batman

is Bruce Wayne. And Dick Grayson was also Batman

at one point. Just give me your thoughts. I already

went off on the deep end on the other episode.

If he became the specter The new specter that

Alright, you're dead. You no longer get to be

Nightwing or Robin, but now you are God's wrath

and vengeance go forth my son Yeah, I I don't

know I'm I have nothing but faith in Kyle Higgins

and his writing in his story, but I don't like

what I don't like is basically it's it's like

michael bay saying oh the turtles are going to

be aliens michael bay is not directing the fucking

turtles movie his one of his production companies

is producing it why he even has any um public

relations say about the fucking movie is beyond

me whatsoever so dc is the same thing why are

they coming out and saying this like i would

prefer hearing it from the writer is my point

that I'm trying to make. I would prefer to hear

it from Kyle Higgins who is writing the damn

book versus DC saying, yep, we're gonna reveal

his identity. Yep, that's what's gonna happen.

I don't know, whatever. Yeah, this whole Villains

Month thing, I think it's cool and funny that

they're basically crossing off the covers. and

writing in the villains name. I think that part

of it's cool. I think it's a weird way to celebrate

new 52s, what is it, second year. I think that's

weird, but it gives them time. I guess it's a

way for them to get time to get October, November,

and December ready and have stuff in the buffer

for just waiting in the wings ready for release.

My question is, what the hell are they going

to do for the third anniversary of New 52? And

why do you need to do something special celebrating

your relaunch? Really? Come on. I could see doing

something at the one year and then the five year.

Yeah, but not every year. That's ridiculous.

And that's kind of what gets me out of comics

is when all the events happen. What can't keep

up with it? No, I like. Well, forever evil is

gonna be the first new 52 event. I don't know

how many events they're gonna do What are they

gonna do a new event every year? Oh wait, that's

been going on in comics for the last 70 years

But I don't know I Just don't know. I'd say another

thing. I'm really losing interest in the main

Batman title I Read till the end of death in

the family and I'm like, you know what? That's

cool. I'm done. I'll wait I still have yet to

read Court of Owls, I will read it soon, but

I started with Death of the Family and I'm like,

ooh, the Joker, he's gonna do so many wacky and

weird and horrific, awesome sounding looking

reading things. And then the title of the storyline,

which obviously it's a take off of what happened

with Jason Todd, Death in the Family, Death of

the Family, no one actually, okay, outside of...

Joker killing Jimmy in one of the Nightwing issues

inside Batman 13 to 17. No one actually dies

seriously That's just all right, so you said

that you're more of a character slash Person

that likes the non big companies for the most

part. So you really You're not on a side Marvel

or DC you you like them both at some point for

some reason, right? I mean, yeah Marvel I like

their big kind of heavy hitters Yeah a few books.

I'm more curious. Like I'm really hoping the

only Marvel title I'm following right now, which

I just found out will be canceled at I think

that's fucking cool. Um, kind of, you know, very

based upon battle Royale and the hunger games,

but you know, who gives a shit? It's all. And

see, um, man, truthfully and the red lantern,

um, outside of that, I just haven't found a book

that's grabbed me really. Are you, when you talk

about He -Man, are you talking about the new

ongoing that Keith Giffin is writing? yeah that

is that's an interesting series that they're

gonna be doing because apparently it's seven

issue arcs so issues one through seven is all

Keith given and pot Mahan issues 8 through 13

or 8 through 12 or whatever it is it's gonna

be David Abbott and somebody else doing the story

in the art, and I'm like what the hell but apparently

it was all planned that way From the beginning

did you read the the 2012 miniseries the six

-issue miniseries didn't even know it existed

till this moment Okay, see go back and listen

to the pullback episode 14 people It's a six

-issue miniseries the DC did last year It basically

kind of ties into what the current ongoing is,

but the ending to that book, as far as who the

actual villain is, will freak you the hell out.

You think you know the world of He -Man, you

don't know Jack. Now, is it worth going back

to Get? Yes. I believe it was in July, either

July or early in August, that it got released

into trade, and the trade is... I don't know,

maybe $14 .99 if your comic shop offers discounts.

I'm sure it would almost be under $10. But it's

worth getting in the trade. I'm just emailing

my comic book guy right now. But yeah, it was

a really good, interesting story on what they're

doing. The other thing you're going to have to

get it, you don't have to get them, but if you

want to see origin stuff. Get the one shots,

He -Man, Skeletor, and Hordak. That will also

explain a lot of what's currently going on in

the ongoing a little bit. It'll give you more

background information. But yeah, that new ongoing

is simply amazing for He -Man for DC. I never

get into the old mini comics that Mattel used

to do. I never got into any He -Man comics as

a kid, even though I... carried around my castle

grayskull for twenty plus years until it died

about three years ago uh... it's called snake

mountain the snake mountain place that wasn't

what i originally thought it was as a kid and

i'm like you know i don't care about that anymore

uh... all rights uh... so do you have any recommendations

for people for recommendations i really My Little

Pony micro series stuff. I think it's a good

place to start. You want to just focus on direct

character books. Another thing, I really recommend

checking out Avengers Arena from Marvel. I think

that's really kick ass. Any Mass Effect comics

from Dark Horse are generally very well done.

And Injustice, Gods Among Men from DC would be

what I'd recommend. Yeah. for me uh... and people

of probably here and you don't try to hear me

say this gail simone's back girl and kyle higgins

nightwing if you've ever had any love for those

characters in any way shape or form whether it's

the old animated series whether it's the sixty

six television show whether it's them and robin

even though we all know that men robin sucks

uh... just what Those two writers are doing with

those characters is just amazing I will also

recommend especially for you Mike II I know you

love the DCA you and if you love Batman Beyond

as much as I think you do Go get go on to Comixology

or wherever you get digital stuff and get Batman

Beyond universe on Comixology is called Batman

Beyond 2 .0 And it's a fantastic Read and that's

just gonna expand that you because the events

of of the comic version Happen after Justice

League Unlimited epilogue now is that is it only?

No, it doesn't have an after epilogue it happens

between Return of the Joker and probably leads

up to epilogue because Terry at this point is

in college Yeah Check this out. Now, I was asking

you, is this only available online or can I get

a print version? You can get a print version.

It just came out this past August 21st. What

it does is it collects Justice League Beyond

and Batman Beyond Universe. Had a chance to look

at the number one issue and what it does is it

collects the first two digital chapters of the

Batman Beyond story and then it collects after

that it collects the Justice League Beyond stuff

as well, so But if you just want the single Batman

Beyond 2 .0 stuff get it digitally Okay, well

is there they're quick easy reads and they're

only 99 cents a piece for the digital versions
