Talking in Circles
The Geek Oscars

About this Episode
This is Jason David Frank, and you're listening
to the Geek Cash Radio Network. Let's take a
look at the board. And the categories are potent
potables, letters that begin with G, who reads,
which is a category about books. I'm sure we
won't tackle that one. Let it snow. State your
name. In that category, all you need to do is
state your name. Famous operas and potpourri.
Sean, you control the board. I'll take horage
for 200. It is who reads. It's about books. It's
not whore ads. That's it, Connery. You're on
a timeout. You are now on the inside of what
I like to call the circle of trust. We are all
connected in a great circle of life. You know
something, Bert? I think you and I are going
in circles. It feels like we're going in circles.
The circle is now complete. When I left you,
I was about to learn you. Now I am the master.
Because it's a circle. Yeah, we heard about the
circle. Yeah, I swear. Hi, this is Greg This
is Chuck and this is Dan and we are Talking in
circles brought to you by the geek cast radio
network the podcast that is going to be geekifying
the Oscars Yes, by the time this is released
the Oscars would have come out But we're gonna
take what the Oscars does and do it better in
doing it the geek way and make it much more entertaining
Yes, yes, so we have our tuxes on Greg has his
evening gown on. No, I just have a pair of those
high cut or low cut briefs with the black tux
on it. Well, there you go. That's how I'm doing
it. Keeping it fancy. That's right. Keeping it
fancy. I'm in a tuxedo snuggie. All right. Not
really. I would never be caught dead in one of
those. And I'm gonna park it cuz it's freaking
freezing You know, it's really cold when I get
an email from my apartment complex telling me
things to do Because it's so cold out and it's
like keep cabinet doors open Keep the water running.
I'm like, all right. Well, that's kind of weird
But before we get to the craziness of the geek
Oscars in our second segment, how's the week
been going for you guys Greg? I know that you
have a special a tinder story that we might Get
the chance to partake. Oh, yeah. I'm back on
Tinder again, guys. Thank you. So far, it's all
right. I'm getting talked to a bunch of people,
whatever. I'm not really looking in their About
Me section because I'm just going by face. And
then I'd like to get to know people through actually
talking to them later instead of reading all
their stuff and instantly knowing everything
about them. So I've just been going off of, uh,
faces and, uh, so eventually I right swipe left
swipe and, uh, I got a match for somebody. I
was like, Oh, all right, nice. And I go look.
And then I, I actually looked at their about
me before I went and talked to them. Yeah. Halfway
through, I find out that they are a transgendered
person. So they were a really convincing female,
pretty good looking, uh, Woman, I guess I I don't
know any of the ends. I'm quite ignorant about
transgender people I've never really met any
transgendered person. So yeah, I've got that
going for me now. So Yeah, not talking to that
person. They may be nice person but Not into
that kind of situation they feel free to do whatever
they want and it's cool if they want to get that
done, but Not my kind of situation. So yeah,
I'm sure there's a A lot, you know a lot worse
could deal with though. I guess it tells you
that the the power of reading though I can tell
you a lot. So read The paper directions read
the directions before you get started because
you never know what parts you're gonna be playing
Don't judge a book by its cover. Yeah Very nice.
All right Chuck. Well Probably maybe one of the
biggest news stories to come out recently. It's
shocking. How will this frozen over all that
great stuff? But uh, It's sudden news that some
of our listeners might be aware of but Chuck
you you finally have joined Twitter Yeah, I have
I figured like well, you know, it was actually
the day over the weekend where we were having
wind chills at like 25 below zero, so I'm like,
well, this is the closest that we're going to
get to help reason over. So I'll just join. So
I was kind of bored. There was really nothing
you could do. I didn't even want to go out to
like do anything. So kind of just was hanging
in. I'm like, yeah, I'm going to join Twitter.
What the hell? Nice. Nice. I was actually, I
was at babies are us signing up for registry.
When I get a text, I'm like, or not a text, but
a tweet. I'm like, wait. What is this going on?
Really till my wife and wife's like really Chuck
is doing Twitter. It was it was done. I almost
told everybody in the store All the balloons
dropped down from the ceiling and toys are us
like alarms are going off Yeah, so, uh, you know,
it's been you know a few days almost a week How
have you enjoyed Twitter? Have you kicked yourself
off yet? Or are you still are you still enjoying
it? I'm actually kind of enjoying it so far I'm
not too busy with my activity, I guess. Kind
of just enjoying reading other people's tweets.
I think I've only done like 14 tweets or something
like that, but mostly just like retweeting other
people's stuff. Are you also retweeting Funko?
Not Funko, but Hasbro. Nice. Talking in circles
brought to you by Funko and Hasbro. A lot of
toys. Not to their knowledge, though. Yeah. A
lot of toy stuff, which I'll talk a little bit
about later. But and then, like, I think something
that Jimmy Fallon wrote, which was actually pretty
funny, because he was like, he said the Washington
Monument, they just discovered that it's 10 inches
shorter than they thought it was. And the Washington
Monument said, can you come back and measure
in June? You know, I like that. But now I tried
doing everything like, I think I tweeted a picture
to you, Dan, about that cable figure. Yeah. And
then i you know i tried retweeting and i did
favor things so i can i did all the steps and
like you know i did i got to the ten tweet mark
so i got like past level one of twitter if it
was a game even throughout some hashtags there
like within your first you tweet was impressive
is it some time to get handle the handle that
you know how that crazy mean the house is. Yeah,
I just, you know, kind of looked at what was
trending and the the Toy Fair stuff was kind
of trending. So I kind of threw that stuff out
there. And there's a really cool website for
that stuff that I go to called The Fwoosh. And
some of my fellow collectors, if there's any
out there, probably know that site. But so, yeah,
I was having a little fun with it and mostly
just reading other people's stuff. So you mentioned
stuff about Toy Fair. Do you want to get in?
I know you there's a lot going on in that world
this week. Yeah. I didn't I don't know like the
whole all the ins and outs of it and everything
because I'm focused on only certain areas like
I'm a big fan of the Marvel Legends action figure
line which I've mentioned on here before. I've
been collecting those for like over 10 years
probably 10 or 12 years since they first came
out and they released like a ton of pictures
of new like series and new figures they're coming
out with of those. I'm super excited for those
because they have They released like they're
gonna have an Ant -Man wave It's not gonna be
on a movie or more based on a comic. Well see
what they're doing now kind of is They're mixing
their waves up. So they have like a couple of
movie figures and then a couple of comic figures
Because from what I had heard if they do a wave
of like all comic figures a lot of retailers
Don't want to carry them Because they think there's
no market for them Yeah, because you know comics
And all right But like they you know the retailers
know the movies bring a lot of revenue obviously
so they want things that are associated with
those so they kind of like You know if they're
coming up with Avengers wave And that's one of
the big gripes about like Legends collectors.
It's like it seems like every wave There's like
an Iron Man figure or a Captain America figure
and like for a while there Wolverine was like
in every wave and stuff But they're kind of doing
that for a reason which kind of sucks but it's
kind of keeping the legends popular so in a way
it's a good thing if we can kind of put up with
it but yeah they're coming up with a new spider
-man wave which I guess everybody's excited about
this chameleon figure which they never made a
figure of him before so that's pretty cool it
gives you some alternate heads and Or or did
they and then just put it with a different character's
name? Yeah, you never know just buy like a double
like it just is by a second spider -man figure
and be like that's chameleon Yeah, there's a
craven the hunter figure that looks like really
awesome some Avengers figures some new figures
that look really great. So I was definitely excited
about that which I was kind of upset though cuz
I'm like damn it. I was almost done collecting
and You know now that all these cool figures
are out So if you had to like pick one or maybe
like one or two from the other new ones that
were announced anyone stand above and anything
above the other ones besides the fact that made
a chameleon figure I I gotta say I'm super excited
for that Craven figure because it just looks
awesome like It was just a picture that was sort
of released. It wasn't really on display there.
Yeah, so it was kind of like a rendering of it,
but it looks like It's a new sculpt and it just
looks like it's a statue almost like it just
looks amazing the detail on it and stuff But
also there's a scarlet witch figure that is coming
out. That's really awesome Really looking forward
to getting that because the old scarlet witch
figure from toy biz was like terrible So they're
kind of redoing some of the long overdue ones,
which is pretty exciting nice nice I remember
I had a craving figure and I was a kid but it
was from the cartoon series Yeah, so back man,
I probably have that someplace I don't know but
but that uh That cable figure picture that I
sent you looks pretty cool. Like that's actually
a Marvel select. Yeah, which is weird because
they're The same price as the legends now, like
they've always pretty much been $20 with the
legends have gone up in price So the select is
usually like a better sculpt It's still posable,
but it's more like a statue almost. I have quite
a few select figures and a lot of them are really
good. I have a Juggernaut one and a Colossus
one, Saber Tooth, stuff like that. They're usually
really, really good and that Cable one looks
like it's on par with that quality. It's great
though because you're almost like getting a statue
for like $22. Yeah, yeah, that's very cool. It's
funny. I had like a Thor one, but I lost it I'd
moved in work and I think it got kind of misplaced
when it was moving So it was like the the new
Thor look from like 2006 or so. That's yeah I
have a cap one to the Bucky cap when that debuted
so well they they're coming out They should they
really revealed a new picture of a Marvel select
Thor It looks okay. But the cool thing is there's
an accessory with it of hit of a spinning hammer
Nice so it's like a round piece with like all
these hammers like around in a circle So you
put it in his hand. It looks like he's like swinging
it like in the comics cool. So it's pretty cool
awesome and One thing I did get to do this weekend.
It is kind of within the Realm of the Oscars
going on and I do this every year. This is actually
the fifth year I did this and it's called the
best picture showcase. It's done by AMC I'm sure
a lot of other theaters do it too And what what
they do is they play all the best picture nominated
films over two days One was on one Saturday and
then the Saturday before the Oscars It's like
it's an all -day event. I go with a friend some
work. We've been going for a while now and it's
kind of it's a cool time It's interesting. It's
like the closest thing I get to going to a movie
festival because I don't go to anything like
can or Sundance or anything like that and they
do have like a Maryland movie festival, but it's
during the week So I don't have the opportunity
to go. So it's it's fun. Like the first day saw
Granby to Pest Hotel whiplash Birdman and Selma
And that was kind of cool. It's like, it's not
bad. It's like 50 bucks for the entire thing,
but I get 10 bucks back in for food. And then
I got an additional 10 bucks back from my rewards
card and I won some free movie tickets because
I won trivia. They had a trivia question about
like for who was going to be the star of. Grand
Budapest Hotel before Ray Fiennes and I knew
it was Johnny Depp. Because I listen to podcasts
so see podcasting can make you you know make
you a star I guess or get me one free movies.
But yeah, so that was cool and it's good time
and It's interesting though cuz last two years
in a row We sat in front of these ladies, you
know older ladies like late 40s 50 ish and They're
super annoying the first time that story. Yeah,
we sat by them in front of them one year The
very next year our own mistake because we sat
basically in the same location and so did they
two years in a row So this time we see them there
again So we're like, all right. Well, we're not
sitting in the same location We're going to a
different place and we did well, then there is
a really obnoxious guy behind us anyways who
wasn't as bad but uh, I think he would have drove
you crazy chuck because he ended up talking about
the The arrow and the episode suicide squad getting
it like really wrong, but acting like he was
knowing what he was talking about Like how it's
like Holly Quinn was never a member of it and
like all this other stuff and he was just getting
it really wrong and The guy I go with Larry he's
you know, he's actually probably more in the
DC and he was like this guy keeps getting things
wrong He's saying it really loudly. I don't remember
the character from Saturday Night Live Will Ferrell
had it was one that he couldn't control the volume
It sounded like that guy cuz he was just the
way he would project it was like he was yelling
but he was just normally talking so and then
It kind of set me off to I didn't know I say
anything but you was talking about her which
is one of my favorite movies last year and he
was like Well, I think the director and the writer
just they had different ideas like they didn't
seem to know what each other was doing and I
wanted to turn around and be like It was written
and directed by the same guy Unless the let's
think of who was schizophrenic. I'm pretty sure
he agreed with himself. Yeah, exactly I was like
I let it go. I was just whatever but It's interesting.
It's always fun. Like because I I've seen all
the movies are not well most of them by the time
I went to the screening and it was just kind
of interesting knowing the movie and waiting
for the reaction and like whiplash the I've only
gone to one day so far by the time this air has
helped go to two but so far whiplash got the
biggest crowd reaction like literally by the
end like there was almost a standing ovation
and just because of the way that movie ends you
can kind of understand why but After Birdman
like I think a lot of people are just really
confused because it's a different movie And I
think people didn't really know what to expect
with Birdman. I think people thought it'd be
like a comic book movie and it's not at all But
uh, the best experience I ever had was Tree of
Life and if you know anything about Tree of Life,
it's by Terrence Malick and this was from like
two years ago It's a different film. It doesn't
go through a linear story, very atmospheric,
some random imagery. It's a kind of out there
movie for a lot of people. And the reaction afterwards,
it was just like... What the I think someone
said like what the hell Academy? What the hell
was that? Like it was like the crowd was visibly
angry. It was kind of funny Just being there.
I'm like because there it was such a out there
movie I think a good chunk like walked out because
it's such a different film. But uh, it was it's
always a good time I look forward to it every
year. So but yeah, it's pretty much all I've
been up to that in the Putting the get it furniture.
We put together a dresser and kind of embarrassed
how long it took it took like, you know a good
like six hours to get it Get it together. Yeah,
but it was a very complicated dresser with eight
drawers. And it was like a serious one that took
a lot of work. But also we were also watching
flash and arrow while we were doing it. So that
kind of, okay. So that it was kind of like, you
know, yeah. So I was going to say, does it is
like, does the dresser have its own wifi spot
and like if the hook up the Bluetooth and yeah,
you know, it makes coffee. It's a, it's a correct.
Serious satellite radio exactly. You cannot you
know runs electricity. It's weird It's cool goes
back to the future and if you open it up in the
right angle, you can get the Narnia so We have
pretty uneventful week just dealing with the
cold and had a first snow day of the year Which
was exciting and get the work from home. So It's
always fun. But anything else before we take
a quick break and we get back and do the geek
Oscars? No, because Greg did absolutely nothing
for the most part, except I watched Supernatural.
And I don't think I've ever ever pimped that
on the show. If you have something that you just
want to sit down and watch, I highly recommend
Supernatural. It's really good stuff. Yeah, my
wife really loves that show. I've watched like
secondhand a lot. So but yeah, I hear a lot of
people love it. My brother actually really loves
that show, too. It's really good. Chuck, don't
watch it. I think you will hate it. I've tried
kind of watching and I don't really care for
it. Yeah, it's got a whole angel demon thing
going on and I think it skews what actually happens
in the Bible, so I don't think it's up your alley,
so. Yeah. It's not historically accurate. Yeah.
That goes without saying. But I think it's kind
of interesting. The characters are really interesting.
And I'm not into it to the point of believing,
like, oh, demons, ghosts exist. But I find the
concepts interesting. So it's kind of right up
my alley. Is it when you keep with every week
or is that just when you catch up on a book?
Oh, I've been binge watching I didn't start watching
that from the beginning I because like I said,
I can't keep up with stuff and I finally actually
forgot about agent Carter this week. So I was
wondering like it's kind of funny every week
Greg Texas that agent Carter is on But this week
we didn't get attacked. Yeah. Yeah, and I forgot
so and I was just waiting the binge watch that
anyways I've only watched the first two episodes
and then once over I'll probably just Stick that
one down one day and watch it. Yeah, but I've
been binge watching the supernatural show and
it's it's really good to be quite honest. Awesome.
I would like to share a food story. Oh, cool.
Oh, you have a food story. Those have been popular
lately. We have a lot of food stories. I'm seeing,
you know, from feedback from our listeners, they're
liking the food talk. So I just wanted to throw
another little quick food story out there. Went
to Pizza Hut last night with my girlfriend. I
don't know if you've ever had the pleasure of
ordering this, but we got the ultimate cheese
lovers pizza. It sounds delicious. Oh my gosh.
It's so good. It's like, I don't know if you've
ever had Pizza Hut's pasta or not. I have. But
they actually they actually have really good
pasta. And this pizza tastes just like their
little chicken Alfredo pasta. Like all these
cheeses on it. There's like parmesan cheese and
it's just there's like gar like this garlic sauce
kind of thing But it's not overdone It's just
like it's amazing So if you like if you go to
pizza and you haven't tried that like that's
on my recommend list for this week The ultimate
cheese lovers the thing is awesome. You had me
a cheese and garlic. Yeah, and yes ultimate and
Cheese and lover in a sentence. It's probably
gonna make it time I know and then we get these
little things too. They called they called kpapas
and They're basically like little tater tots
with cheese and jalapeno Things in them nice
and they're really good at different ranch dressing
and everything. Oh Yeah, they go good with it.
So now we got everybody all nice and hungry before
the break here. Yeah Unfortunately, I have no
food stories, nothing exciting this week. I kind
of had a boring week of food, just kind of your
normal stuff. I'll try to do better for next
time though, so. You gotta bring it, Dan. You
gotta bring it. Alrighty, so we're gonna take
a quick break and when we come back we will be
getting into the official Geek Oscars, so we'll
see you in a bit. Hey, this is TheMusicMan08,

and welcome to the 2015 Geek Oscars presented
by the Talking in Circles podcast in association
with Geek Cast Radio Network. Welcome, welcome,
welcome. Thank you all for joining us today for
today's very special event. Now that those fake
Oscars are out of the way, we can get to the
real Oscars. We're going to be nominating those
properties we geeks all love. And you may be
asking, like, 2015 geek Oscars? Yes, but not
just stuff from 2015. We're actually going to
be going through a lot of different geeky topics,
kind of almost like a... grab bag of different
categories that have been long forgotten by the
academy so we feel it's our duty to kind of recognize
those underappreciated categories like best action
star best geek weapon and best way to time travel
those are just a few of the oscars we will be
getting to in a short bit so you understand how
this works we came up with the categories we
came up with the nominees and greg chuck and
i all voted the one with the most votes won And
that was pretty much it. And very much like the
actual Academy Awards, we were all three white
men. So I guess we do have that in common. I
am actually 50 % black and 25 % Asian, Dan. Oh,
really? No, not really. You do not seem that
way. Because it's not true. Well, there you go.
We have five different areas that we're going
to be going over. The first one will be performances,
then action heroes, then comic book awards, then
miscellaneous, which will be a little bit of
everything, and then finally awards that are
just in regard to things that happened in 2015.
So it should be fun. Hopefully, you know, we'll
have a little bit discussion about who won as
well. I will preface this by saying is I know
who won, but no one else did. I have all these.
Winners in sealed envelopes that I'm going to
reveal here tonight and we'll hear Chuck and
Greg's actual reaction So it's cut. It's kind
of like the old -school America's Funniest Home
videos where we lock in our votes Like nobody
knows who wins until the end lock in your votes
out and unfortunately, we all don't win any money
though. So Be nice to me. Can we get Bob Saget
to have a special appearance on here? You probably
like he's doing anything else Alrighty, so we're
starting with our first categories and these
nominees are all references to different geek
performances. Starting with one of the most infamous
villains of all time and that is the Joker. There
have been many men that have played that role
but only three that have been nominated for this
role for best performance as the Joker. And the
nominees are... Heath Ledger. My father was a
drinker and a fiend. And one night, he goes off
crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife
to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not
one bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife
to her, laughing while he does it. He turns to
me, And he says, Why so serious? He comes at
me with the knife. Why so serious? He sticks
the blade in my mouth. Let's put a smile on that
face. And... Why so serious? Mark? Hamill. And
Jack Nicholson. I always ask that of all my prey.
I just like the sound of it. Never rub another
man's rhubarb. And the geek Oscar goes to? Any
guesses? I'm gonna guess Ledger. And you're correct.
It goes to Heath Ledger. Nice. Yeah, I was actually
a little bit surprised by this one. I thought
we and we all voted for Ledger I thought there'd
be maybe one vote there for Hamill, but looks
like we you know, we all went with Ledger I figured
everybody else was gonna go with Ledger. So I
went with Ledger Is that a terrible way how to
vote? That's how the Academy votes Chuck any
reason why you went with Ledger over Hamill?
I guess just cuz he was better in my opinion.
I think like Hamill is the distinctive voice
of the Joker, like when you think of the Joker,
you think of Hamill's voice, but I just really
liked what Ledger did on the screen, right down
to like, you know, improvising certain moments
and stuff in the film. And I just think he totally
got that character, which may or may not have
been his downfall, but he did one hell of a job
portraying him, I think. Very true, very true.
Well, it's fitting that we go with best Joker.
So let's then go with Best performance as Batman
the Batman and the nominees are Kevin Conroy
No, you are not my father. I am not a disgrace
I am vengeance. I am the night Michael Keaton
Don't kill me, man! Don't kill me! Don't kill
me, man! I'm not going to kill you. I want you
to do me a favor. I want you to tell all your
friends about me. What are you? I'm Batman. And
Christian Bale. Wait! You could die at least
tell me your name It's not who I am underneath
But what I do that defines me And the winner
is Kevin Conroy nice. Oh, yeah, and it was a
clean sweep Just like Heath Ledger. Yeah, we
all voted Conroy. Greg, did you also vote Conroy
because you thought we would also vote for him
as well? No, I really liked him. I think he is
most certainly the best and the one I kind of
associate with Batman pretty much nine times
out of ten. So yeah, I definitely went with Conroy.
It was one of my favorite portrayals that you
get to see over and over and over again. Keaton
is really good as Batman, but I'm just... used
to conroy and that's kind of the voice i hear
in my head when i read that there was not one
right in vote for adam west i was expecting that
but alright now staying in the comic book realm
but going to a different character one who is
an actor that seems to change with every movie
but it seems to actually be kind of steady now
but so we're going with best performance as bruce
banner and the nominees are edward norton i've
got a problem There are aspects of my personality
that I can't control See a shrink it's a little
bit more complicated than that Bruce trust me
when I tell you I've heard them all Not this
one Mark Ruffalo Now might be a really good time
for you to get angry that's my secret cat I'm
always angry And the iconic Bill Bixby. And the
geek Oscar goes to... Mark Ruffalo. Woo! Nice.
This was not a clean sweep and I almost went
with Norton too. It was tough, but I personally
went with Ruffalo just because I thought he had
a little bit more fun with the character and
I gotta go with that line. You know, I'm always
angry. So it just hit me in the right spot, but
I do love Edward Norton. I'm like, I'm a staunch
defender of the Incredible Hulk movie. I think
it's really underrated, but I'm excited to see
what Ruffalo has to go. But Greg, I know you
voted for Norton, so any words on his performance?
I thought he was more convincing as Bruce Banner.
I just really love that movie. I do think Mark
Ruffalo is a good Bruce Banner. I don't know,
there's just something there that doesn't...
I would say that I do agree that I think Norton
probably has a more... Complex performance and
more will say well -rounded because it does get
some like I think he hits every beat of the character
Yeah, and also he had more has the look too.
I think to be honest he's a little bit more Skinny
taller kind of guy. Yeah, I think to be fair
if he had more Films where he got to play that
part. I think he would have definitely get a
lot more respect to their role. Yeah It's too
bad. I guess you just had some falling outs with
the director and it kind of went south Yeah,
I do kind of miss that cuz I I did think that
was a good movie, but I I do like Mark Ruffalo
Don't get me wrong All righty, and as you can
see Eric Banner was not nominated. So All right,
we got two more awards here for the press performances
in different geeks movies and as you can tell
this little bit of running theme here so but
Next nominations are Best performance as Professor
Charles Xavier in the nominees are Patrick Stewart.
James McAvoy. Are you gonna ask us to think of
a number between 1 and 10 now? No, Agent Stryker,
although I could ask you about Jupiter Missiles
America currently placing in Turkey. You brought
a damn spy into this facility! And Cedric Smith.
He's from the TV animated series. Is there no
limit to the torment in your mind, saber -tooth?
Have you only known betrayal by your friends
and persecution by humanity? We must probe deeper.
Your mind is full of torment, Sabretooth. Your
mutant life has been difficult. Your search for
acceptance of failure. Cruelty to creatures we
don't understand seems limitless. Let me become
one with your pain. Together we can find the
cause of your torment. And the geek Oscar goes
to Patrick Stewart. And I will say I was the
only one that went with James Mcdavoy. I'm not
gonna lie. But you guys went with Stewart. Chuck,
what is your opinion about Stewart's performance
as Charles Xavier? In my opinion, possibly the
greatest comic book movie casting that we've
seen. And it's not just cause he's bald. I don't
know. Like I don't get wrong. I really love McAvoy
and I think he does an excellent job. But for
me, it's just a Patrick Stewart's like sort of
wisdom and leadership, I guess, in that older
role. I think he just, I think he just pulls
that off so well. Like he just pulls off that
role of a teacher and a mentor. And that's really
what you look for in a Charles Xavier, plus the
voice is rocking. He does have a good one. Anything
to add to that, Greg? I agree with everything
that Chuck said. He just kind of embodies that
role. And I do think James McAvoy is a good,
younger Charles Xavier, but I guess I'm kind
of used to. The older version, uh, especially
in the comic books. So When they get somebody
to play the role, I definitely think of patrick
stewart as that older charles xavier There's
not a negative word. I would ever say about patrick
stewart as charles xavier It's pretty spot on
it is quite great everything you guys said 100
agree with I guess the reason I went with mcdevoy
is more so because It's almost unfair because
you know stewart is playing that character and
he's well established He you know, he knows who
he's it who he is, but mcdevoy. He's Sing Xavier
kind of go through this progression to become
that legend. We know all we all know so feel
like he had more of a Variety and kind of more
of a journey to go on as an actor that I appreciated
So that's kind of why I went with him and so
it's but like I said, I Stewart's definitely
deserves the nomination the award. That's a good
point though He's gonna use a little bit more
creativity in his role. Yeah Fittingly we talked
about perfection professor X. So who do you go
with next? and that of course is the best performance
as Magneto and the nominees are Ian McKellen.
My good boy. Whoever said I wanted you? Michael
Fassbender. How did you lose them? The treatment
for my spine affects my DNA. You sacrificed your
power so you could walk. What do you know about
it? I lost my fair share. Dry your eyes, Eric.
Doesn't justify what you've done. You've no idea
what I've done. I know that you took the things
that mean the most to me. Well, maybe you should
have fought harder for them. If you want to fight,
Eric, sit down. I will give you a fight! Let
him come. You abandoned me! You took her away,
and you abandoned me! Angel. Azazel. Emma. Fancy.
We were supposed to protect them! Eric! Where
were you, Charles? You abandoned us all and David
Heblen Like you I believe that mutants and normal
humans cannot live together in peace The war
for survival must begin now while we mutants
are strong and you are still divided Your assassination
would have ignited that war. I flew to Washington
to witness the beginning of a new age. But the
X -Men saved you. It is up to me to finish what
others have started. No, please! I've got a family,
children! Be quiet! When I was a boy, I saw men
executed. Women and children. Each night I saw...
And the Geek Oscar goes to, in a clean sweep,
Michael Fassbender. Yes, I was a clean sweep.
Yeah, I was a little bit surprised I mean, it's
interesting, you know Stuart waiting for for
Charles Xavier Fassbender going for Magneto,
but Greg what what a What do you appreciate about
Fassbender as Magneto? It was the first movie
He was so epic and it was a Magneto movie that
x -men first class It was more focused on him.
So it got more of the emotional backstory behind
Magneto, which makes him such a great character.
You got him going on this revenge plot, plus
his badass music that went along with his role
was just friggin awesome. But yeah, Ian McKellen
was good. It was just kind of so -so. I never
really pictured him as Magneto. It was like a
really old Magneto, whereas Patrick Stewart fit
the role perfectly. Ian McKellen just was kind
of like, okay, yeah, he's a great actor. Like
he can't take that away from him ever. He is
really great. But Michael Fassbender really encompasses
that kind of role and he's just got that feel
of Magneto behind him. He's got that vengeance.
I just feel like Ian McKellen just kind of like,
yep. Magneto whatever but Michael Fassbender
is just like I need revenge Kind of is like that
honestly, but Chuck anything else to add yeah,
I think just I mean Greg said it pretty well
there Thank you with my Mike You might get best
geek Oscar for performance for this podcast I
think like Fassbender just He is what like Stuart
was to Xavier like he already nailed that in
his first performance Adam like he gives you
that confidence Yeah, that Magneto has like and
he has a swagger too. It's just like Like every
villain sort of has a confidence that they they
know they're gonna win like they know they're
better than whoever they're facing And he just
like pulled that off. Yeah, definitely and he
has such a huge presence to him like it you just
Captivated by every moment. He's on screen and
similar to Mcdavoy like I think we see him as
this guy who like you mentioned Greg has just
been on revenge and has to kind of become more
of a complex person and become like to a leader
of Men when he never really set out to be that
so and to one of my favorite all -time scenes
in any Marvel movie Maybe even like favorite
movies is his moment with Charles Xavier in X
-Men First Class when he's moving that satellite
and literally like the entire thing is just him
reacting and it's on his face and it's just it's
great. He's a great actor. See, my favorite part
is him in the contained unit with Kevin Bacon
as the Sebastian Shaw in that conversation. Oh,
that's great. With the with the coin. Yeah. He
had the coin scene. That is that is pretty awesome.
I love that movie. First class. Yeah. It's there's
so many great moments in it. So and it's a lot
because I am so definitely and Also, I'm in this
thing called the podcasters of film fantasy league
act that started I key cast radio comm that Kevin
Optimus solo started and I had the first pick
and I picked Michael Fassbender So I'm hoping
the fact that you want to kick Oscar gets me
points somehow So not that I you know cheated
the bot, you know cheated The votes or anything
like that, but you know, I feel like there's
like one or two people Involved in that and I
saw their first pick. I'm like really what the
hell Well my first I had the very first pick
and I went Michael Fassbender. So I think that's
a good pick I don't know what you're what they're
getting the points for but I we get points for
box office awards and appearances and like like
a different like Acting awards and stuff like
that. I think fast vendors a good one because
I do think he's an incredible actor I think he's
got a movie that's gonna be coming out based
off a video game that I really enjoyed Assassin's
Creed Yeah, he that he's been rumored for that.
He's got a lot going out He's gonna be in Macbeth
this year. So that's that's kind of crazy He's
a dude who will do like a comic movie, but also
go do Shakespeare. So It's kind of actually that's
that's all that's all of Magneto and in Charles
Xavier apparently that's that's a requirement.
Can you do a comic book movie? Okay, we'll do
Shakespeare first and then come talk to us. So
it'll be classically trained. All right, so that
that was it for the performances. So now let's
move on to our next grouping of categories. Action
heroes and When it comes action heroes, what
is it? What's something they all have that makes
them so iconic? Great hair. Great. I was going
to say mullet. Yeah. Yeah. Around the same wavelength.
Nice. Nice. That's true. Really tight t -shirts.
Yeah, maybe. Maybe bulging muscles. Maybe if
you're from the 80s. Ash shots. Loving ash shots
from the 80s. Oh, there were a lot of those.
They're like 80s action films are like. Literally
like two steps away from being gay porn a lot
of ways Let's be you see commando and him like
getting ready for battle. I'm like, all right
I get that he's muscular but this is getting
like a little bit a little bit too much Yeah,
I heard on how did this get made? I relistened
to all those I really need new podcasts to listen
to but I was listening to that They were doing
tango and cashed recently. They talked about
What was up in the eighties with the loving ass
shots? There is apparently a shower scene. I've
never seen Tango in cash, but I most definitely
have to now. For the loving ass shots. Unfortunately,
we do not have a category for best loving ass
shot. Maybe next year. But our first category,
as I was alluding to something that a lot of
great action heroes have, and that is iconic
lines. So here are the nominees for most iconic
one liner. I'll be back. Arnold's Fortune Anchor.
I'll be back. I'll be back. I'll be right back.
I'll be back. I'll be back. I'll be back. Ha!
You did not gonna say that, did you? That's what
you always say. I do. Bond. James Bond. Various.
Yes, I don't know what you say there. And go
ahead, make my day. Clint Eastwood Go ahead make
my day and The geek Oscar goes to and perhaps
a surprise win which I did not expect But go
ahead and make my day takes the geek Oscar for
most iconic line Voted for that. I'm thinking
I everyone else is gonna go with I'll be back,
but I was wrong So Chuck you went with I'll be
back. I gotta go to you first. What's your reaction
to this award? You know either either one is
good I think a lot of the old -school fans and
moviegoers will relate to the Clint Eastwood
line the reason I picked I'll be back is just
because it's like Everyone knows that and it's
like, you know, even like little kids are like
I'll be back You know, like they know what that's
from and everything. So I guess the reason I
personally didn't go with it because I feel like
Schwarzenegger is also this kind of solid That
with like doing it a little bit too much and
like even when it's like in the trailers now
I'm like I get it. It's funny. Did you say that
every time even when you're alluding to it in
the Expendables? Yeah So you're putting it in
there all the time like you said it last scene.
You don't need to see it again like every time
But Greg, I know you're kind of, you're a Clint
Eastwood fan, so you went with a good go ahead
and make my day? Yeah, you can have to, because
I had to, because I am a Clint Eastwood fan.
I do enjoy that movie. I really didn't agree
with Bond, James Bond, because I'm like, that's
just his name. He's introducing himself. Like
if it was, like, Martini Shaken. not stirred.
Like, I feel like that's more of his catchphrase.
And as for Arnold, he still haven't seen Terminator
at this point. I know we talked about our geek
shame last week. Yeah, the geek, geek shame is
continuing for me. Hey, well, you know, there's
always still time. Yeah, it was hard. I wanted
to go with something James Bond. And I think,
you know, Marquini might have been interesting.
But since that was his first line spoken on,
spoken in movies, I figured I'd go with it, you
know. So, but it's a good point. Thanks. All
right, moving on to the next category and kind
of alluding to last one. But here we go. Best
old school action star. And the nominees are
Duke himself, John Wayne. Clint Eastwood And
Steve McQueen. Just waiting and the geek Oscar
goes to John Wayne I'll be honest with this one.
I actually want Steve McQueen because he's my
favorite but in order to get it So it wasn't
a tie. I went with my second choice, which was
John Wayne So it ended up going with John Wayne
for the winner. So Like you alluded to last time
Greg you are a Clint Eastwood fan and you didn't
vote for Clint Eastwood So what reaction to the
award going to John Wayne you still think it's
deserved or? Yeah, he's he's he's a good old
-school action hero star. I just kind of felt
like he kind of hobbled here and there he The
best with his hurried walk to yeah. Yeah. Yeah,
he wasn't like Really in that action II he was
more of a tough guy kind of thing cuz he he didn't
really move around too Well, if you ask me Well,
he you know, he let the stuff come to him. Oh,
yeah Or just with a gun Yeah, check. I know you're
an old, you know, I know you're John Wayne fan.
So are you happy that he won? Yes, I am. I know
he's not really like action II per se like I'm
his own person but like You know just the the
things that he gets tied up in basically just
the situations he gets involved in it's it's
always some sort of crazy action scene and plus
he's been in like an insane amount of movies
like if you ever like Look at the movies is in
I think it's like a hundred and seventy some
movies He did or something like that. I could
be wrong on that. But yeah, it's it's some ridiculous
number If you just look at amount of movies he
made with John Ford alone, it is insane So I
think he's probably maybe still making movies.
We just don't even know it. So But do you have
a favorite John John Wayne movie? I'm probably
the Cowboys. Okay, but there's a couple other
really good ones too that I like Rio Bravo North
to Alaska is really good when I think too. I
see Are you more of a fan of World War 2 John
Wayne or Western John Wayne? I would say Western
John Wayne. What about Greg, what do you like?
Westerns. I think that's what I've mostly seen
them in for the most part. That's what my dad
mostly watches. And does not know any other genre.
What about the same question for please Clint
Eastwood? I think that's more of a compelling
question What's better Clint Eastwood like the
Dirty Harry Clint Eastwood or the man with no
name? Clint Eastwood all of those are good in
my opinion all of those Altogether are great.
I like the man with no name. He's definitely
badass and tough, but Dirty Harry he Complete
asshole cop getting shit done No matter who's
trying to take him down whether it's his own
own people trying to keep him contained or the
bad guys He's just freaking badass All right,
so we did old school now not getting the new
school quite yet. Let's go to the 1980s Maybe
the most iconic age for action heroes butt shots
and butt shots if we learned anything today 80s
loves their butt shells. And the nominees for
best 80s action hero are Sylvester Stallone.
This is over. I'm coming again. I'm going back
on your word. Yeah. You signed over custody and
Michael will never go with you because you're
a loser. You've always been a loser! Mr. Cutler
is talking to you. I'm through talking. John
Claude Van Dam I've had my ups and downs My fair
share of bumpy roads and heavy winds That's what
made me what I am today Now I stand here before
you What you see is a body crafted to perfection
A pair of legs engineered to defy the laws of
physics and a mindset to master the most epic
of splits. and the geek Oscar goes to and a clean
sweep, Sylvester Stallone. I was thinking maybe
Schwarzenegger would get one vote, but the fact
that Greg hasn't watched the Terminator films
kind of explains that. So I like Schwarzenegger
when he's with James Cameron, but films other
not so much. But I'll start with you here, Chuck,
because I know Stallone's your boy. So happy
that he won. I am. I'm a big fan of a lot of
his movies. There's not many that I didn't like,
to be honest. I mean, I don't know if he called
Rocky the action ones because they're more like
sports movies, but obviously all the Rambo movies
and stuff. Cobra, Lock Up was really good, Over
the Top and, you know, Tango and Cash like we
alluded to earlier, which is on Greg's list now.
Your favorite still on film, Greg? Favorite Stallone
film. That's a hard question to ask. I know,
I do. Stop or my mom will shoot? No, that one's
awful. I do like... Urban Cowboy? No. I do like
Demolition Man. There was something I had in
my head and I lost it. Of what my favorite Stallone
movie is and I can't think of it right this second.
It wasn't driven, was it? No. Because I know
you're into cars and stuff. Cliffhanger or...
Was it new school old school? Old school definitely
old school. Yeah, it's not coming to me I'm sorry
guys, but but I do enjoy me some rocky. That
was a really good film series Trilogy quadrilogy
or whatever you want to call it fifth quintology
Well, they're making another one so, you know
Well, it's kind of what's in the rocky universe,
but based upon the son of Apollo Creed The art
the RCU the rocky cinematic universe Alright
so let's move on to current day may not have
the action stars we once did but this they're
still there so the nominees for best new school
action star are Jason Statham We've never been
properly introduced your man. Well, I won't ask
your name I personally believe a reputation is
the most important thing. It's pissed off some
of the locals. Look, I don't want any more problems.
Okay. Anything else you're thinking hard about?
Because I can smell the wood burning. If someone
has an issue with me, keep it there. I don't
want my kid involved. I'm a little lost. See
the house? Mm -hmm. See, that's my fucking house.
No one who comes around again will find me standing
in it. Gerard Butler. You're a madman. Earth
and water. Or you'll find plenty of both down
there. No man. Persian or Greek, no man threatens
a messenger. You bring the crowns and heads of
conquered kings to my city steps. You insult
my queen. You threaten my people with slavering
and death. Oh, I've chosen my words carefully,
Persian. Perhaps you should have done the same.
This is blasphemy! This is madness! Madness.
This is Sparta! And Dwayne the Rock Johnson.
Hey, Chris. License and registration, please.
You're joking, right? License and registration.
Huh. What's the problem, Sheriff? You. And the
drugs are peddling out of your casino. Huh. Only
thing that's going on at my casino right now
is construction. You took care of that. Yeah,
that's right. I plan on taking care of everything
else too. If you can. Try to think this through.
A casino is a license to print money. Why would
I jeopardize that by selling drugs? Because you
own the town, Jay. It's changed now. Really?
See, the only thing that I think has changed
around here is that you get to wake up every
morning and put on that nifty little badge. But
underneath that badge is the same guy who couldn't
make it playing college football and apparently
couldn't make it in the army and not really gonna
ever make it as a cop. Is that right? Yeah. And
if you push too hard, you're gonna be a man who
never gets to see 40. License, please. Thanks,
Sheriff. Sir, get your tail lights fixed. It's
your last warning. What's wrong with my tail
lights? They're broken. And the Geek Oscar goes
to, in a clean sweep, Jason Statham. Woohoo!
Nice. Any surprise there for you, Greg? Yeah,
I'm surprised. The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, didn't
do better. He's been in a shit ton of stuff and
he is pretty freaking badass. I just love Jason
Statham as an action hero. He's freaking all
over the place punching people in the face, karate,
driving cars really fast. I can see him getting
all the ladies, which I kind of put with the
action hero, I guess. I mean, it's an element,
definitely for sure. Chuck, you happy to see
them one? Yeah, absolutely. And I think also
an important element of the action hero that
sort of needs to be included is, like Greg said,
the car chase, too. And he's got a lot of experience
with driving in his movies and stuff. A lot of
action sequences with that not to mention the
fighting nine guys at once thing Which is also
handy, but yeah, I really like all like all of
his movies pretty much anyone who was nominated
in this category you think that maybe had should
have been that we didn't include I debated about
Matt Damon, but he's more of an action actor
actor who does action You know, maybe Liam Neeson,
but like same thing. So I was thinking more guys
who are known for action I don't know if there's
anyone else out there that i'm kind of I would
I would maybe throw in like Jackie Chan. That's
good. We definitely could have put him out. You
know what? He's 70s, 80s, and 90s. Yeah, he spans
a long distance there. I thought about Jet Li,
but I think he kind of lacks the blockbusters
that the other guys have. Yeah. All right. So
we're going to finish up the action hero category
with this award. And this one is kind of a little
bit off the wall, but I think it makes sense.
The award is action hero you would want to save
you from a terrorist if you were caught by terrorists
What action hero do you want to be the one come
save you and nominees are? Jason Bourne I can
tell you the license plate numbers of all six
cars outside. I Can tell you that our waitress
is left -handed and the guy sitting up at the
counter weighs 215 pounds and knows how to handle
himself I know the best place to look for a gun
is the cab of the gray truck outside And at this
altitude I can run flat out for a half mile before
my hands start shaking. Now why would I know
that? How can I know that and not know who I
am? I don't know who you are. I don't know what
you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can
tell you I don't have money. But what I do have
are a very particular set of skills. Skills I
have acquired over a very long career. Skills
that make me a nightmare for people like you.
If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the
end of it. I will not look for you. I will not
pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for
you. I will find you. And I will kill you. and
John McLean. I was always kind of partial to
Roy Rogers, actually. I really like those sequined
shirts. Do you really think you have a chance
against us, Mr. Cowboy? Yippee -ki -yay, motherfucker.
And the award goes to... Brian Mills. Not a clean
sweep. Chuck, I was almost a little bit surprised.
You went with Jason Bourne. I thought you'd go
with Mills. Inspired you to go with Bourne instead.
I'm trying to remember my thought process at
the time, but it was something to do with Jason
Bourne. It's just in my mind having more like
experience and training or something like more
intense and Longer training or something like
that. I was I don't know I was on that thought
train for something and I'm like, you know He
just seems more and plus he has that killer instinct
to a lot of times like Mills like just does what
he needs to do to Save his family but born like
it's sort of a weapon you just point him and
get sort of handle anything I think I don't know
interesting Greg. Why'd you go with Brian Mills?
Cuz I felt like he would be the one that would
give most of the crap about me. I feel like I
feel like the others would be like It's actually
kind of similar to what I did too because I was
thinking well Jason Bourne's a little bit of
a head case at times like you know he has these
memory issues and There's a little bit of an
unknown factor there, but Brian Mills He has
a mission he does everything he can to get to
it so and John McClane's great But he's really
just an average guy at best and which is what
it's great about diehard so I went with a you
know super action hero from Taken that you know
no one even lands a hand on him, so I feel like
Maybe the best option, but I wouldn't be upset
if Jason Bourne's the one knocking down the door
and saving you from terrorists and killing everybody
with a pen. I'm surprised you didn't put your
boy in there from 24. Oh, Keith O'Sullivan, yeah.
I thought, well, I know you guys haven't watched
24, so I felt like it would just be kind of pointless
to put Jack Bauer. He would just get destroyed.
Plus the last season of 24 they just did kind
of You know sour the taste of a jackfire a little
bit. Just was really it wasn't awful, but it
was just like unnecessary and kind of uh more
evidence of that why that show went on too long
to begin with so It's kind of like the old quarterback,
you know hanging around for one year too long
in his career It's like seeing joe nameth on
the vikings where it just doesn't make sense.
It feels wrong so we're so we're moving from
the action hero category to a very new category
and that is the comic book awards and not comic
book movies but actual comic books the physical
manifestation of where all those comic movies
come from so in the first award we're going to
be giving out is to the villain most likely to
succeed you have those yearbook awards for the
most likely to succeed well there's got to be
a villain who's most likely to succeed and the
nominees are Dr. Doom, Magneto, and Lex Luthor.
And the Geek Oscar goes to Dr. Doom. If this
award was rewarded to villain that you want to
see succeed, I'm sure that Greg, that probably
went with Lex Luthor, right? Yes, I definitely
want him to succeed. Superman, I'm sorry, everybody.
Greg, I know you was Magneto and it was tough.
I could I definitely see some logic there. So
I'm curious to see why you went with Magneto
or dr doom x -men nerd first off So I was a little
biased pretty sure the people at the oscars are
kind of biased when they do theirs just a tad
I feel like dr doom is like So freakishly obsessed
that he just defeats himself all the time I feel
like Magneto is at least a little bit more level
-headed and Frickin look what Lex Luthor is up
against he's up against frickin Superman He doesn't
have a good chance so that that's kind of my
logic behind it makes sense Chuck I know you
went with doom so You know the character I stole
from you when we villain draft. So what is that
kind of sour grapes? Is that what you do here?
It was curious to see that stirred up. It stirred
up some bad memories You know it hurt but uh,
no, this was this was my way to to actually pick
him Instead of getting snubbed like before I
also thought about Magneto a great deal. But
in the end I just figured like I know Magneto
has spent some time sort of switching sides and
you know he does sort of have a a new ability
to him and he is likely to even play the good
side once in a great while so I think when it
comes to like a villainous plot. I think Doom
to me just seems much more relentless and sort
of the mastermind behind things. Yeah, I think
I went with Doom. It was tough because I think
Magneto, his goals are probably a little bit
more obtainable than that of Doom, who is just
basically obsessed with total domination. But
I think Doom has no conscience whatsoever and
will do whatever. But I think Magneto still shows
At times ship elements of humanity. Like I think
he kept magneto probably has the ability to do
what he needs to do to get his goal achieved
But I do think there's still some humanity left
in him that might hold him off in certain occasions
Which makes him such a great character, but also
hinders him from being completely successful
at times and why he Always straddles that line
of being good and evil, you know kind of being
an x -men leader or being an x -men villain All
right moving on to the next category And the
next category is staying in the world of x -men
best x -men artist and the nominees are Jim Lee
John Byrne and Andy Kubert and the Geek Oscar
goes to Andy Kubert I was the only one Jim Lee.
I was kind of surprised by that. I almost I Kind
of wrote that in without my goal chunks going
with Jim Lee But you went I was gonna say you
guys definitely thought I was going Jim Lee probably
yeah I really curious about this what inspired
you to go with Qbert. Um, well basically I Really
like what Lee did when he first started the the
x1 series in 1991, but he only did the first
11 issues of that series and He only did a select
few issues from the uncanny title so I looked
at a what Cuber did and I sort of have a running
list of favorite covers throughout my X -Men
fandom and Cuber comes up a lot and I really
like his stuff and just his body of work I think
sort of just was enough to outweigh Jim Lee for
me, I guess. Greg I know you you're the you're
the true artist here. So I know you would as
well as anyone and I think you're probably more
red X -Men than maybe all of us was anyone who
I didn't include in the nominees that should
have been should have been added Terry Dotson,
but I extremely love his and he doesn't do X
-Men way too often to be really Associated with
the X -Men. I think you could go Chris Pichallo
But he's I think at this point kind of more known
for his work on a spider -man and those those
are definitely more recent examples of people
to work on X -Men stuff, but other than that
they're just Nothing really that sticks out to
me. Jim Lee is definitely a big name that definitely
developed through X -Men, but I don't think you
could really nail him down just for the X -Men.
The only one that I might throw in there would
be an 80s X -Men artist, which was Sylvestri.
Yeah, Sylvestri is really good. He had a lot
of good stuff. But I don't associate him with
just X -Men. There's a lot of other stuff, more
indie -type stuff that I kind of associate him
with. Qbert does kind of go off and do other
titles, but I kind of mostly associate him...
with x -men i just love his covers from the 90s
for the most part so i i went with him i do enjoy
me some uh jim lee artwork and i've i've never
it's good but i i've never just been a humongous
fan of the old school artwork for some reason
i do enjoy it but as far as my tastes go i don't
tend to lean that way i do enjoy it though Yeah,
I'm the same way. It's such a different medium
when you go to the old school stuff. The tools
they were working with weren't nearly as advanced
as the ones we have today. So what they did was
very impressive, but it's definitely, it's like
seeing it in like going from 3D to 2D or something
like that. It's definitely a drastic change.
I will say my favorite cover, I'm pretty sure,
well this week it is anyway, but my favorite
cover. from the X -Men of all time, I'm pretty
sure is X -Men number 11, which is done by Jim
Lee. But like I mentioned, I just think Hubert
did so much more. I think for this particular
category, he was the better fit. All righty.
All right. Let's move on to the next category.
And that is best superhero team leader. And the
nominees are Cyclops. Captain America. Get ready
for the booze and Superman. Yeah And zombies
coming in and the geek Oscar goes to To no one
surprise Captain America. Oh, thank gosh I voted
for cap Greg. You'd probably be surprised No,
not really. I know you like cap. And by the way,
I wasn't surprised by you going for Cuber We've
kind of discussed that and I knew you had a thing
Good memory. See your memories not all that bad.
I remember I remember the important stuff like
that Priorities like we've all expressed our
enjoyment of Captain America pretty well So I
think it's pretty obvious why he won that category.
So let's move on to the next category and that
is best comic book antihero and the nominees
are Deathstroke Wolverine and The Punisher and
the Geek Oscar goes to The Punisher I wouldn't
want Wolverine, I was the lone wolf there. I
thought Greg, you'd go Wolverine, but you want
Punisher. He's not super anti -hero, especially
at this point with him, well, he's dead now,
but with him running the school, definitely killing
people definitely makes them anti, makes Punisher
an anti -hero. Wolverine is a tough guy, but
I don't think he is really an anti -hero, especially
in this day and age. Yeah, I would say like when
he was first established I think he maybe fit
that bill but I could see the argument maybe
that he's Evolved beyond that and then tastes
his overall change. But uh, yeah makes makes
sense. But Chuck you went with Punisher as well.
I did I just think like that's just the first
one that pops in my head when I think of Antihero
or vigilante is just the classic Version of that
for me. I am a big Deathstroke fan though. I
will say but Don't know why but I've really really
loved the Thomas Jean version of Punisher. Maybe
I'm Alone in that but for some reason that you're
not alone just like Yeah, that that just like
strikes chords with me. I don't know why like
I just really like that movie I always think
of that when I think of like antihero vigilante
type character All right, very nice very nice
and the last category for for the comic book
section and that is most iconic logo And the
nominees are Batman Superman yuck and the flash
and the award goes to Get ready Greg Superman
My first thought was I want to go Batman, but
then I'm like well which Batman symbol Like to
me the 1989 batman symbol wouldn't like the yellow
and the black one of my all -time favorite logos,
but it changes so much Superman s has kind of
stayed the same throughout his entire time for
the most part. So that's kind of my my reasoning
for going with superman, but uh Great chuck is
that i was kind of curious of why you went with
superman as well Uh, basically the reason I just
went with superman is because that Logo is known
the world over. I mean you could literally go
to just about any country and Flash that little
logo and people would know what it was. I just
think more so than Batman. I just think it's
like universally recognizable Makes sense. I
was curious Greg were similar to with the artist
any other logos it Could I get one here? The
third one was hard. I figured the flash, but
because I wanted to get DC represented, but I
couldn't think of any other logos that might
have been a good choice. All three were DC though,
Dan. I know, I know. But like any other categories,
we didn't have much DC. So I figured we might
go DC all for one, but any other logos come to
mind that maybe should have been nominated? I'd
say BPRD, but that's because I'm kind of infatuated
with those stories. I do enjoy those comics Yeah,
a lot of them have changed Captain America's
is just a star for the most part which kind of
represents a lot of different stuff I debated
about X -Men, but you know that could yeah that
kind of morphed around a lot You can't really
peg down just the X That's a tough one. Um, yeah,
but here's you know listeners to see like if
there are certain other Infamous logos that maybe
should have been included maybe green lantern,
you know that maybe might be one another gc But
and then I feel like there's uh can be a lot
of confusion with the flash's logo I feel like
isn't there a lot of other characters with lightning
bolts kind of going up? Uh, probably I would
assume Maybe spider -man his logo. Yeah spider
-man. Yeah the fat spider Can you bring that
fly over to me? What do you think was in that
fly? I do agree with you, Greg, though. I think
the Flash's logo could sometimes be to the less
casual fan, I guess, or the more casual fan,
however you would say that. You probably could
fuse the Flash logo with like, you know, Captain
Marvel from DC, Shazam. Yeah, it's true. Black
Adam and stuff like that, so yeah, good point.
Alright, let's move on to the next section. The
Miscellaneous Award. It's kind of a little bit
of fun here. Let's see how this one goes. The
first award is for Best Way to Time Travel. And
the nominees are The TARDIS, Doctor Who. So you
actually live up here on a cloud in a box? I
have done for a long time now. Blimey, you really
know how to sulk, don't you? I'm not sulking!
You live in a box! That's no more a box than
you are a governess. Oh, spoken like a man. You
know, you're the same as all the rest. Sweet
little Clara, works at the Rose and Crown, ideas
above her station. Well, for your information,
I'm not sweet on the inside and I'm certainly
not - It's called the Targis. It can travel anywhere
in time and space. And it's mine. Please. A phone
booth, Bill and Ted. One time traveling telephone
dude. Strange things are afoot at the Circle
K. I'm here to help you with your history report.
What? That book will give you the number of any
place you want to go. Let's switch out and touch
something. And the DeLorean, back to the future.
Wait a minute, wait a minute Doc. Are you telling
me you built a time machine? Kind of a DeLorean
the way I see it if you're gonna build a time
machine into a car why not do it some style Besides
the stainless steel construction made the flux
dispersal And the geek Oscar goes to the TARDIS
doctor who Yeah, I went with TARDIS cuz I would
the glory and little little unreliable, you know
has gotten into some people back to places They
didn't want to go the loins iconic But if I had
to choose which one I'm going which one I'm gonna
travel back in time with that's I'm gonna go
with TARDIS. It gives you more options Yes, sir.
It's you know, it's a little bit more reliable
in there. You can sleep Well, it's not reliable
at all Well, I mean more yeah true and but it's
got room. It's got more leg room. I like leg
room It's bigger on the inside. You have a place
to sleep at night Yeah, but but Chuck I know
you to go with Lorian. It is iconic. Are you
very disappointed that it didn't win? Um, a little
bit. I mean not really. I'm comfortable in my
own boat there. Here's another thing that might
convince you that the TARDIS is a better choice,
Chuck. The TARDIS is time and relative dimension
in space. So not only is it a time machine, but
it can move to different dimensions it can move
in space as well so it's not just okay you have
to drive down this road and you're going to appear
this road either in the past or the future you
can move to different planets and like we said
before it's much more comfortable to sleep in
that does sound very cool actually i would say
i would give you this that does sound like the
most effective way to time travel but sort of
sort of the way i looked at this was the coolest
way to time travel And any time that I get to
drive a sports car and, you know, get up to 88
miles per hour and get struck by lightning. Yes,
that is pretty cool. I'm just I'm just digging
it. Plus all the all the crazy controls in there
on the dashboard and everything. Oh, Tardis has
crazy control. It's got a nice switches all over
the freaking console. Plus plus the you know,
the future DeLorean can double as. Basically
your own personal private jet. You can just kind
of fly it around. Yeah, interesting enough both
of them don't need roads So there you go, and
yeah, and the TARDIS is a nicely lovely shade
of blue. I got a Nice it is a lovely shade of
blue. All right kind of staying in the Ville
vehicle realm best space vehicle and the nominees
are the Millennium Falcon the Star Trek Enterprise
and Serenity foam firefly and the winner is in
the clean sweep the millennium falcon that's
kind of just no i think that's a no -do situation
we could just move on from three guys who don't
really watch star trek yeah and love star wars
yeah kind of obvious but i was trying to think
of other iconic space ones and most of them all
were from star wars so it's like the death star
or the x -wing i'm like all right but all right
next one greatest geek weapon and the nominees
are the lightsaber what is it your father's lightsaber
this is the weapon of a jedi knight not as clumsy
or random as a blast an elegant weapon for a
more civilized age For over a thousand generations,
the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace
and justice in the Old Republic, before the dark
times, before the Empire. I took the liberty
of coming up with some options. This one's fun.
She's been fitted with electrical relays that
allow you to... What about this one? No, no,
that's just a prototype. What's it made of? Vibranium.
It's stronger than steel and a third the weight.
It's completely vibration -absorbent. How come
it's not a standard issue? That's the rarest
metal on Earth. What you holding there? That's
all we've got. You quite finished, Mr. Stark?
I'm sure the captain has some unfinished business.
What do you think? Yes, I think it works. And
the proton pack. from Ghostbusters. And the award
goes to... The Proton Pack from Ghostbusters.
Wow! Yeah. What? I know. I... I was surprised,
because I voted for Proton Pack. I'm like, you
know how to put Proton Pack, vote here, because
no one else is... Everyone's gonna go with Lightsaber.
But Greg went with Proton Pack, too, so... Yes,
I did. I'm curious to hear your reasoning for
it. Captain America's shield is just a giant
metal disc that it is... It's cool, but it doesn't
have a lot of flair to it to be quite honest
I don't know what my reasoning was for the lightsaber
But I was just like I really love the proton
pack and it just like with all these Sparks of
light flying out of them all over the place and
it Wrangles in the ghosts and everything. I don't
know. I just thought it was kind of cool and
I thought it was More of an interesting choice
lightsaber. So the reason I want proton pack
is I went back to my childhood and When I was
a kid, I so wanted a proton pack. I just I don't
know what about it like I Love the cartoon in
the in the movie and I just I don't know I always
wanted a proton pack never really wanted a lightsaber
So that's why I went proton pack, but I know
it's got to be disappointing to you Chuck, right?
Cuz you went with lightsaber. So is it I did
So it may come as a surprise that I didn't pick
the Captain America shield, but yeah, my reasoning
there was that. I wouldn't be nearly as coordinated
with the shield and I'm pretty sure if I threw
the shield, it would not come back. If I threw
it, my weapon is gone. So you throw it once like,
oh, well, that was fun. It's like having one
lifeline in, you know, millionaire. It's like,
well, that's done. But I've I've always wanted
a lightsaber and plus they're so light It's just
like one single thing you can carry on your belt.
You can cut through anything. That's true Awesome,
but what a great uses for the lightsaber Alrighty
next category or next nomination or go to The
best villains that never get old those people
we just love to see get hit with lasers get chopped
up get killed you know, get overthrown, what
have you. And the nominees are zombies, Nazis,
and stormtroopers. I'm realizing that would be
an awesome movie. The thing I'm writing does
have zombies and does have Nazis. And the geek
Oscar goes to the undead zombies. Honestly, I
was a little surprised. Greg, you went with Nazis.
I did go with Nazis. So you just can't get enough
of seeing Nazis getting blown up? Is that it?
Yeah, because they were really douchebags. The
zombies just can't control themselves. The Nazis
are making an actual choice to kill people and
they destroyed a huge hunk of a religious faction.
That's just not right. You shouldn't be killing
people for their choices, to be quite honest.
So I went with Nazis. It's also because they
were an actual real threat. Wait, zombies could
be one day. Stormtroopers aren't real They're
from a galaxy far away. That was my understanding.
Yeah, and I feel like this first I felt like
stormtroopers were space Nazis So I felt like
they were imitation Nazis so that's why they
kind of are I mean that's what storm named Nazis
had stormtroopers too, so Chuck I know you it
was zombies and is that more so because of Watching
walking dead recently because I almost thought
you would go with stormtroopers Yeah, I think
maybe a walking dead has something to do with
that. But I think it's just like You know You
really don't feel bad You know, you could take
out hordes and hordes of zombies and it really
doesn't you know phase you at all so it's kind
of like the the go -to The go -to bad guy that
could throw in there and just have your heroes
kind of mow down So stormtroopers, I never thought
of I guess yeah, I guess they would be but I
guess they just seemed so Easy to me like like
a zombie would feel more threatening to me than
a stormtrooper Yeah, that way that but You could
trick them really easily and like, you know zombies
you can't trick because they don't think Alright
just like go that way. Nope. It's not working
Alright, so the next award is for best worst
movie and the nominees are Birdemic shock and
terror Birdemic shock and terror Sharknado and
The Fantastic Four by Roger Corman. And the award
goes to Birdemic, Shock and Terror. Nice. No
surprise there. It's probably one we've all watched.
We watched the 90s X -Men or Fantastic Four together
as well. But we did have fun watching that. Just
watch clips of it. It is it is awful awful in
the wrong way. You have to watch it with friends,
though That's what makes it really great. Yeah,
if you watch it by yourself, it's just terrible.
But it's depressing Yeah, I feel like yeah like
and the reason I went with that is I feel like
the Fantastic Four movie at least had somewhat
of a plot. They were trying to go for a birdemic
lake their stuff just didn't even make sense.
It's like, why are you doing what you're doing?
And then the sound totally cuts out at the beach
in kindergarten. All you hear is like wind blowing
against the maker. Oh my God, we have to stay
away from the birds. Should we stay inside this
motel where there's no birds whatsoever and barricade
it? No, let's go in the car where there's freaking
windows. We'll protect ourselves against these
coat hangers. All righty now moving on to last
section of the night as we look at the last year
2014 and things that happened and the first category
is most overblown news story of 2014 and the
nominations are the new Captain America and Thor
characters Gamer gates and the interview craziness
and the award goes to the interview craziness
that occurred I Mean I almost went with a Thor
cap stuff But I figured since the interview stuff
legitimately was a national almost an international
Incident that that kind of was a little bit more
over anything else to add to that or we want
to move on to the next category I just didn't
know I know what the interviews about but Would
talk about gamer gape, but the more the less
you know about it the better just Google it It's
just a it's a ridiculous thing Billy Billy when
I truly thought was overblown was the cap and
Thor thing because it's it's a comic book who
really cares what very true That is a good point.
That is a very I know we argue about it like
geeks, but they change cap to the Falcon and
Thor to a woman. Yeah. Yeah, okay. Yeah, I know
what you're talking about now Exactly. It's over
one that it's already been forgotten about That
may we might have to put a write -in and put
in that and since like we forgot all about it
and the fact that in a few months It's gonna
be undone. Anyway, so Really good. All right.
So the next category is biggest letdown of 2014
in the nominees are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
the movie Amazing spider -man 2 and Gotham and
greg's life what no i'm kidding and the award
goes to teenage mutant ninja turtles the movie
wow that was awful no surprise yeah see i went
with gotham because i figured we all kind of
knew turtles was going to be bad but i've had
some faith in gotham but it kind of all let me
down though i should say i haven't watched after
the third episode but I didn't I didn't mind
Gotham for the most part. I thought it was halfway
decent, but I forgot to watch it So I'll probably
binge watch at a later date. Yeah Yeah, you can
hear more about our opinion on Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles if you go to spammer encounters
and turtle powers where we talked about the movie
itself, so No need to rehash those bad memories
All right moving on to the next category the
best character of 2014 and the nominees are Rocket
Raccoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy, The
Flash from The Flash, and Captain America from
Captain America, The Winter Soldier. And the
award goes to Rocket Raccoon. What, what? Ooh,
wow. Yeah, I went with Rocket because, I don't
know, I feel like he's been everywhere. And I
know Flash has been popular, but I feel like
considering the overall box office success of
Guardians and the fact that the Guardians, the
Rocket Raccoon comic book went crazy in sales,
so I went with that. If you look at his increase
in popularity, it's kind of got insane, where
Flash is definitely popular. But I know Chucky
went with Flash, so are you a little disappointed
that he didn't win? Not really. I mean, he could
go either way on this one. I'm actually wearing
a Guardians of the Galaxy t -shirt I have rocket
on there, but um, I just kind of I guess I figured
everybody else would go the rocket so I went
flash but fair enough I think like you could
definitely go either way that but flash is like
a Surprisingly sustaining itself this whole first
season and it's been a really great surprise
for me So that's kind of why I mean that way
mine one of the things the flash is better than
arrow because I kind of think that Yeah, I'm
not gonna lie, I'll agree with that. I still
haven't seen Flash yet. Arrow has definitely,
it has its moments, but it's definitely subsided
from the second season. Yeah, definitely. I have
to agree with you there. I will say the last
episode or two was really good, though. Moving
on to the next category, and that is the biggest
surprise of 2014. Kind of hard I'm gonna lie
to come up with these so apologize if they're
not that big of surprises, but the nominees are
Hydra takeover of shield Death of Wolverine and
the DC Marvel movie announcements and the award
goes to Hydra's takeover of shield But anything
to add to that it was just kind of you know,
uh to me I I figured the other ones we kind of
saw coming but that one was uh I didn't think
it'd be nearly as elaborate. Yeah, that's pretty
much what I thought. I agree with that. What
did I vote for, by the way? You voted for DC
Marvel movie announcements. Okay, but I agree
with that anyway. I agree with you guys. Stop
being so difficult, Rick. Dammit, Chuck! Moving
on to the most important category of not only
tonight, probably of awards history of all time.
It's this is probably going to go down. We should
probably mark this moment. Take some time to
soak it in because it's very vital to our existence
of human beings. And that is the best talking
in circles episode of 2014. And the nominees
are Space Pope. Coast to coast. extreme overkill
or the action hero draft. And the award goes
to us. Cause you know, we did them all, but in
reality, extreme overkill. I don't know how to
talk about that. The talk about our own podcast,
our own podcast. I don't know. It's kind of weird.
It's a little narcissistic, but you know, we
can, I think we can handle the pat on the back.
If I'm curious to hear if that, you know, that'd
be kind of a good thing to throw out there to
the. Everyone out there if they have a favorite
episode that we did I think the one we probably
got the most feedback from was probably the March
badass Brackets and action hero draft stuff,
but personally she overkill as a has a has a
personal place in my heart in space Pope as well
because that's when we did all together which
was you know where the infamous sitting in the
bucket story started so Probably the most important
episode of our existence My greatest contribution
to this whole thing. The most important Frank
movie. All righty. So the last award of the evening.
And that is the ultimate geek moment of 2014.
And the nominees are landing on a comet by NASA,
I guess. You mean the NSA? Guardians of the Galaxy
movie Also by NASA maybe this one is Star Wars
episode 7 movie trailer launches in the award
goes to and perhaps a stunning upset landing
on a comet you went with actual geekness not
just the fake yeah make -believe but Also talked
about that on one of our podcasts I'm on a comet.
But yeah, when we actually landed on the comet,
it was kind of a cool moment in science history.
So yeah. Yes. And the fact that it was real,
I think sort of kind of outweighs the other thing.
Yeah. And it's a it's a good and you know, it
could lead to future films. You know, are we
getting to we you know, who knows what what what
impact it could have. On the earth itself. Exactly.
Yeah, it could be used for evil. Dr. Doom, who's
the most - the villain most likely to succeed,
can use the common stuff to destroy Earth. So,
yeah, it all ties together. Alrighty, well I
hope you enjoyed the Geek Oscars of 2014. Let
us know what you think, what we got wrong, what
nominees should have been included, you know,
different awards we can do for next year. So,
trying something new hopefully worked out. But
we like to end each episode with a letter. And
Chuck, you're up this week. Let's hear what your
letter's about. My letter is this is probably
going to be a little bit of old news by the time
this comes out but I think it was a big sort
of a big event that happened and Got a lot of
attention for a lot of people and that was the
40th anniversary of Saturday Night Live Which
was a pretty pretty great episode a Lot of people
had a good time watching that. So here's my little
letter written to Saturday Night Live Dear SNL.
So, you just had yourself a pretty big anniversary.
40 years. Pretty amazing when you think about
it. Where has the time gone? Four decades is
a long time for a show to be entertaining its
audiences. I mean, think about it. You came out
a mere three months after the original Jaws movie
in 1975. Granted, you haven't entirely been on
your A -game those last few years. But I gotta
hand it to you. On your 40th birthday, he got
down and brought it. Now there's a great deal
of nostalgia there, so just simply bringing back
some of your more iconic characters is likely
to be enough to satiate your longtime fans. The
likes of Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy,
Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Michael Myers and Dana
Carvey, Dan Ackroyd, Norm MacDonald, Jimmy Fallon,
all made the night very special indeed. But for
me, the most notable skit was an old favorite
of mine, Celebrity Jeopardy. Sean Connery is
back harassing Alex Trebek, and Turd Ferguson
even joins the party. Got to admit, Alec Baldwin
was pretty hilarious with his Tony Bennett impersonation,
and how funny was Jim Carrey's Matthew McConaughey?
That voiceover recording just had me rolling
on the floor. This really brought me back to
some of my favorite times of SNL. I know I'm
not old enough to have enjoyed the heyday in
the late 70s and 80s, but there's a lot of great
stuff coming out with Will Ferrell there in the
late 90s and early 2000s. Back to the present
though. Although there were some less memorable
skits on the 40th anniversary show, I think overall
it was a terrific tribute episode and it was
truly incredible to see so many former cast members
reunited in one night. I'm not sure what lies
ahead for SNL. I'm really not familiar with any
of their current cast members. But if nothing
else, we had a pretty great memory with this
40th anniversary spectacular. I may just be like
Aunt Netta watching it every night in the VCR.
Sincerely, the Saturday Night Live fan! Yeah,
very nice. I didn't catch all of that, but I
did catch a good deal of it Which like the celebrity
jeopardy thing was I was actually trying to watch
it at work And then once he did the whore wheat
the whore reads line. I was done. I couldn't
I stop laughing That's that was great or whore
ad yeah, I messed it up so Yeah, that's my favorite.
Uh, my favorite skin of all time is the celebrity
jeopardy stuff and probably because it's a running
Skit like this, you know always a version of
it. So it's not just a one -time thing great
stuff Yeah, I would say though like actually
I've have not I don't tend to watch like Saturday
Night Live beginning the end But I was actually
watching a great deal of clips from this year.
There's actually a pretty good Some good talent
there. I was Kate McKinnon is really funny She's
got a lot of good a lot of good of characters
that she does and So I think it actually like
the cast that they have now. They're really built
in something good But yeah, I'm like you I don't
watch it nearly as much as I did. I think I was
funny I was reading something where it said That
people are most likely to say the best Saturday
Night Live were the ones that the cast when they
were like in middle school and high school Because
that's when people tend to watch it the most
which is kind of true Yeah, I say that's when
I used to watch it the most so Already anything
else before we bring this episode to a close?
I think that's about it. Alright, so there's
lots of ways to get in contact with us. You can
email us at feedback at geecastradio .com or
TalkingInCirclesatlive .com. We're on Facebook
and Twitter. Just search TalkingInCirclesTCRN.
Chuck, I can't believe I'm saying this. You are
also on Twitter. What is your Twitter name? My
Twitter name? I never thought I would utter this
phrase, but... My Twitter name is at heroic age
Chuck Which is if you follow comments, you know
the heroic age stuff, but just kind of threw
that in there So there you go. And Greg, where
can people follow you on Twitter? I am at the
create porch and I am at movie revolt But the
best way probably in contact with us is by going
to geekcastrea .com or nerdly .co .uk But that'll
be it for this week. We'll be back next week
same time Same channel, same podcast feed, but
for now. This has been Chuck. This has been Greg,
or the transgender Tinder person. And this has
been Dan, and we've been talking in circles.
We'll see you next week. That sounds like...
