About this Episode

The pilot episode introduces hosts Dan, Chuck, and Greg as they launch Talking in Circles, a new podcast about geek culture. The hosts share their backgrounds, explain the show's name (rooted in their tradition of parking lot conversations back in Pennsylvania), and dive into what they've been watching and reading lately—including Arrow, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Drew Struzan documentaries. They play a fact-or-fiction game covering topics from Superman to Tombstone, and end with Greg's open letter to Brian Michael Bendis about his work on X-Men events and Marvel comics.

Hi, this is Kevin Conroy and you're listening

to the Geekcast Radio Network. You know something

Bert? What? I think you and I are going in circles.

And welcome to talking in circles brought to

you by the geek cast radio network a brand new

podcast for you all out there I am one of your

hosts Dan and this is a brand new podcast obviously

and with that actually have two Very new additions

to GeCast Radio, two really great friends of

mine. Before we get into what Talking In Circles

is going to be exactly, I just thought we'd introduce

them to everyone out there. So, starting things

off, Chuck, why don't you introduce yourself

to all the lovely listeners out there in cyberspace.

How's it going? My name is Chuck. I'm from Pennsylvania.

I'm a big movie fan, big comic fan. TV shows

and anything to do with comics. Love sports,

too. Football, basketball. So, all that good

stuff. Go Bulls, right? Oh, yeah, dolphins, bulls.

Maybe not this season. But yeah, Chuck and I

go way back to like second grade. It's craziness.

We've been friends for a very long time. So I'm

glad to have him aboard. And also joining us,

another great friend of mine. You call him Greg,

we call him Gregler. How's it going, man? Pretty

good. I still do not like that nickname. Which

is why we use it so much, but I I feel like some

kind of weird Pedophile or something else like

a serial killer or something like that sure.

It's a nickname What exactly you know? Do you

feel like gets you into the whole geek culture

and whatnot a lot of comic book reading I read

a lot of regular novels anything science fiction

is right up my alley Love movies if it has anything

to do with science fiction horror B rated horror

movies I think are amazing. And TV shows, anything

really to do with science fiction I am really

into. I'm not as into sports as much as Chuck.

I mostly just watch football for the most part.

Big Vikings fan. I love Adrian Peterson. He's

kind of what got me into the kick of liking the

Vikings. Well, he is the Vikings. Yeah, pretty

much. Let's think you get a quarterback this

season, but maybe if they're lucky, I'm not getting

my hopes up that they're going to do good on

that. The idea is like there's a lot of podcasts

out there, but of course we want to make sure

we add our own. It's only fair, but. Obviously

that the term talking in circles people have

heard that it's a common saying but for us It's

there's kind of a double meaning to it. As I

mentioned, we're friends ago way back Greg and

I shared a first college class together We've

been friends since then we got through that French

class together. I Remember none of the lessons

from that class whatsoever. No, I do not either.

I don't know how I passed that class Well, the

teacher had the hops for me. I'm pretty sure

Well, you can't blame her. Let's be honest. Yes,

the eight -year -old woman teaching the class

definitely about swimming That helps But yeah,

so Greg and Chuck are both located in good old

around Scranton PA where I'm originally from

as well, but I've been I've moved down to Baltimore

for a little bit of warmer weather though not

this week, but Growing up one thing we tended

to do one thing. That was a common thread every

No matter what we did we went bowling video.

I went to watch a movie or whatever go to Denny's

which was a common pastime We would end up in

the parking lot standing in a circle. Just you

kind of shoot in the stuff left and right That

sounds completely having conversation about just

randomness of whatever a common usually a lot

of inside jokes and whatnot and just uh honestly

some of the funniest things i've ever remembered

just standing in parking lots in circles and

it was there's this joke we've always had for

a very long time so talking in circles is also

kind of a a double meaning for us so it's kind

of cool just to do that virtually and like a

virtual parking lot which is a lot warmer yes

and i can have my pants off without getting arrested

Yes, that's very true. We would do it in the

cold, which also sounded bad, but just sitting

in parking lots in the freezing cold, and my

wife still gets on me for how cold it would be

when you'd be just standing out there. But laughter

keeps you warm. Definitely. So the idea is just

going to be random conversations about stuff.

We have some games ideas. We're going to grow

this podcast in different ways, different directions.

We have a lot of great ideas of what we're going

to do. It's definitely going to grow. Anyways,

I lost my train of thought there for a second,

but you were just staring at it. How could you

not? So you have an idea what Greg's into like

you said science fiction So yeah, the idea I

guess the way I kind of described it It's like

a sports talk show about pop culture in a way

we're gonna kind of take some of those ideas

and the start things off what we're gonna get

into is kind of getting the idea of like who

we are exactly we told you a little bit, but

good idea to see what we've been doing in the

past week. So we have a few things we wanted

to talk about. Chuck, I know you mentioned you

had a few things you've been into this past week.

So why don't you kick it off? Sure, I guess.

Well, last night I watched the new episode of

Arrow. That's currently my favorite show on TV.

It's on a WB, which doesn't have as many as many

viewers, I guess, as a major network. But I think

they do a great job. But that's really. kind

of a dark and gritty show. Definitely a different

tone than Smallville, even though that was one

of my favorite shows too. But I think Arrow's

really great show. It's in its second season

now. I haven't missed an episode yet. I haven't

got into it yet. It's on Netflix now. I just

need to kind of bite the bullet and start it.

Yeah, I don't miss an episode. I have to like,

I have to watch it. I get so behind because I

watch everything on Netflix because I could never

remember when anything's on and then I'll be

like going out or something and I'll miss an

episode and won't be able to catch back up the

same thing happened with agents of shields, but

that's not been as good as Arrow has been so

has Chuck a season I've heard a lot of people

saying season 2 has been a lot better than season

1 and do you agree with that? Yeah, I guess I

guess I could agree with that. I mean season

1 definitely had its good points, but they're

kind of starting to introduce more characters

from the comics now more villains and stuff and

it's really cool because it's kind of like two

shows in one because they always show flashbacks

of what he went through on the island you know

if you know about green arrow he spent years

isolated on a on an island and in the tv show

they kind of have flashbacks every episode and

explain things but then they also have things

going on in the present and they're really developing

The relationship we had he had with slayed Which

is deathstroke from the comics? He's kind of

starting to turn bad now, so it's really getting

interesting All right check besides era what

else you've been up to lately um actually I've

been watching an old show by the name of John

Doe. I don't know if you guys heard of that It

sounds really old It's actually from I think

around 2002 2003 I think it was on Fox, but I

couldn't find it. I couldn't find it on Netflix.

Couldn't find a DVD set anywhere on Amazon. But

I ended up finding some episodes on YouTube.

And I think that's a really, really cool show.

I remember watching it back in the day, but it's

like this guy that wakes up and doesn't know

who he is, but he knows everything else. He's

kind of like a savant. He just knows every fact

like ever made and. he knows like every kind

of math and every just everything and so it's

Rain Man yeah except not as socially awkward

but um it's it's actually stars um Dominic Purcell

who played Dracula in Blade Trinity okay the

guy from Prison Break yeah yeah Actually, he

started filming prison break right after this

and that this show was canceled after one season

which kind of sucked But yeah, I would I would

definitely recommend checking that show out.

I think it's pretty cool. I Think I've ever heard

of that. So that's really interesting. Yeah,

it's it's definitely worth a worth a watch I

mean if you watch the pilot episode, I think

you'll be hooked This again, it's good But then

you have one season and then be left hanging

that it's like did it end in cliffhanger or anything

like that? Or do you well, I'm actually only

two episodes in But I have heard that it leaves

you on a cliffhanger, but uh, but definitely

check it out. It's called John Doe. All right.

Anything else? Um, no, I think that's about it.

All right, Greg, how about yourself? What have

you been up to lately recently? Well, I think

I hit upon one of your favorite things. I think

you've from what I've heard been listening to

a lot of documentaries on Netflix. Yes, I'm a

sucker for good doc. Yeah, I feel like I'm running

out of them, but I found a really good one today.

I think they just added it Maybe it's a it's

Drew's Drew San the man behind the poster. Oh,

yes It was very good. It's it's about the guy

who does a majority of the poster artwork over

in Hollywood He's done stuff for Star Wars franchise

back to the future Blade Runner, Big Trouble

in Little China, one of my favorite movies from

back in the day, Batteries Not Included. Nice.

I love that one. Never heard of it, but the title

sounds great You I will let you borrow that it's

one of my all -time favorites I get very nostalgic

about it, but there's a little bit too much of

there's too much It's warranted praise, but I

feel like there's too much of it going on like

I'm already going in knowing who this guy is

because he's so epic I don't know the name per

se but I've seen his stuff, you just know who

he is just through his artwork. So we don't need

the praise for him, but it's just amazing artwork.

I've always thought he looks like a mix between

Norman Rockwell, Art Nouveau style and photo

realism. And it's essentially just a whole bunch

of actors, directors, talking about the work

that he's put out over the years. It's really

good. And there was a part in there that I especially

liked, where they're talking to Thomas Jane,

who played a Punisher in the, well, the second

Punisher movie that's ever been out, because

the first one was played by Dolph Lundgren. We

don't count that one. You don't count that one?

He didn't wear the skull, so it doesn't officially

count, right? Okay, so it's the first one, then.

It's the first Punisher movie with Thomas Jane.

He's also had an HBO series called Hung. I'm

pretty sure, Dan, you've probably heard of that

one. What is that supposed to mean, exactly?

We've all seen it. We all know yeah, I Thought

it was a Punisher sequel. I thought he was hanging

his victims, but there is a good I heard there's

a YouTube video of him returning as the Punisher

which was really good I haven't seen it. Yeah,

it's called dirty laundry. It's really good actually

I Definitely have to check that one out, but

there was a good story that he told about he

doing a role for a movie called the mist and

The beginning of it. He's a poster artist like

Drew and he kind of got sent over there by the

director Frank Darabont. Is that correct him?

Yeah, I'm going to you with all the movie stuff

and And Thomas Jane and himself kind of had to

work together and and Drew was showing him how

to do all this how he does all of his work artwork

and Thomas Jane was trying to get it all right

and holding the pencil wrong and all this other

stuff and finally he goes does the movie does

his part and He's real excited goes up to drew

and he was like, what'd you think? Yeah No, sorry

you were no Thomas Jane was just so just so let

down by that. I thought that was a great little

story that was in there But I wish they showed

More of his process, but otherwise it was really

good I would really recommend it especially if

you are into all those movies and you have an

Artist sensibility even if you don't it's it's

just some great images that they show throughout

the whole whole documentary What was it called

again? It's called a Drew Struzan the man behind

the poster nice Well, there's a couple things

I have here. A quick one. I watched The Mighty

Peking Man. Really? Yes. It was a sci -fi flick.

It's essentially a guy in a gorilla costume that

they make giant through camera trickery and wasn't

really that great. The only really good thing

about the movie that held my interest at all.

They had, I'm not sure if she played in any American

movies, but there was this American girl in it

and that the costume they had her in was just

simply amazing because it held the tension in

the movie just by, wait, wait, I think I can

see, yep, yep, there's a nipple. We have spotted

a nipple. She was falling out of her top every

two seconds. They had constantly had her running

around through the entire thing, which was just

amazing. But that was just a short one. Seeing

the Wolf of Wall Street. I thought that was really

good. Really funny. Kind of got a little depressing

in the last 10 minutes, but it was made up for

with the Another girl with her very excellent

looking, as your co -host in MWire Weekly has

pointed out. Yeah, Margot Robbie. Many, many

times. He was very excited for her. Then there

was another doc, Ricky J. Deceptive Practice.

I kind of got bored during that one, quite honest.

I can't even... He's a magician. I got bored

during the title. I thought it would be more

interesting, like he would show you some of the

tricks, but it's more of an overview of the history

of magic for the most part. Finally, I just kind

of want to point the viewers out. I went to school

for graphic design, so I'm very into the arts,

kind of like with the Drew Sand thing. I really

like that. I'd like to point out a really great

design that I saw coming out in the car world,

because I'm very into car design. I found it

on the Camaro 5 forum and I think everybody should

go check it out because it's a really great design.

Camaro has apparently sketches up for the sixth

generation of what the Camaro might look like

and I just think that looks absolutely brilliant.

Taking a lot of cues off the fighter jet. The

sides kind of look the same. They did a little

bit different things to it but the the back for

the kind of the hip of the car i'll call it right

over the the back wheel well is kind of similar

and then it kind of flares out a little bit more

but the changes the front end and the back end

are amazing and much better than this last little

change up where they just changed the the front

end of the car just a little bit and changed

out some bits and then they made the back end

really boring I think they really updated it

and it looks a little bit more modern it looks

like a combination of the when they first started

they first came out with the fifth gen and the

1960s and it just looks Lot more modern than

the fifth gen. So I thought that was really cool

And I think people should really check that out

and what I can do I can throw a link in those

show notes If you can send me that and then we

can check it out. I'm sure there's a lot of car

lovers out there I myself and not a huge one

if you can tell by my car, but But I'm sure I'm

sure it looks awesome though it does yeah, I'll

check it out and I just have one quick thing

and think about it not so much the What I've

been watching, it's the story that goes along

with it. My wife and I have been watching this

show on, I think it's Showtime or something,

I don't know, but we've been watching it through

Xbox Live and it's the show Masters of Sax, starring

Michael Sheen and - Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

Masters of what? It is called masters of sex.

That's the title and that kind of plays into

the story. It's a it's a legit show I know like,

you know, it sounds like it starts bill clinton

Masters of sex or sex. It doesn't matter. Yes

No, he hasn't been in it yet, but uh, it isn't

like a legit show It's been nominated for a golden

globe and all that michael sheen plays this doctor

who first person to do like sex research Because

before then people really didn't or to you know

Didn't do it for different reasons because of

ethical or whatnot. So he was a first person

actually to test Basically the physical reactions

and stuff like that. I kind of get to that lady

That's like very British and proper and looks

like a grandma Thought that was the first person

that started researching sex I know you're talking

about that this this is way back in like the

60s. I believe She's still around then damn.

Come on. Yeah, she was but this is more like

the this is more like the physical stuff I'm

pretty sure it's factual. But anyway, it's pretty

good show It kind of reminds me of like Mad Men

with less style, but more nudity, but I'm in

But what's funny about it? She talked about the

title master sex Well, I watch it through Xbox

live because it's through like the Xfinity app

Mm -hmm. And in with Xbox live you can kind of

see what other people are watching at least in

some instances So all your friends think you're

creepy enough. Well, no, it's worse than that.

My wife has a younger brother He's about 13 years

old or so and we're friends with him on Xbox

So we're watching the show and I get a message

I'm like, why don't I have a message and I get

it and it's from him He's like, you know, it

tells you what you're watching, right? So he

so I'm like and we're like, well we got nothing

because it's like he's like you can see we're

watching some show called Masters of Sax and

It's gonna look bad. It's like there's like well,

no, it's actual real show, but it's not it's

just like there's like nothing we can so it just

put us in a very precarious situation so it was

just kind of like um yeah i didn't care what's

like they can see what we're watching i'm like

i didn't i don't i don't go on xbox live really

the play people like my xbox is more of a streaming

device but yeah we found out the hard way so

the reason we became friends with them was to

try to watch him and do what he does but it ended

up backfiring so there you go but uh so yes be

careful what you're watching because you never

know who's watching now you have to explain it

to the kid yeah um but but yeah so that's what

i've been watching it's about people that are

really good at determining whether someone's

a boy or girl that's all it is yes yeah that's

a good you know what i'm going to use that line

But yeah, we're gonna take a break right now

and when we come back we actually have a few

games to play So hopefully you'll enjoy those

so you hear a quick ad and we come back We have

a little bit of fact and fiction for you. We'll

see in a bit So let's say you're looking for

a podcast your favorite 80s comic books GI Joe

Transformers Ninja Turtles He -Man, etc. Where

That's right everybody We're the star Joe's we

favorite toys of all the 80s properties Star

Wars GI Joe Transformers mask Thundercats Voltron

you name it. We covered if it's in the 80s We

will cover it at some point Yes, so what you

want to do to find us, you can go to iTunes,

you can go to www .starjos .com, and remember,

the force will be with you, because knowing us

is half the battle. All right, and welcome back

to Talking in Circles. We have a little bit of

a fact or fiction for you. And how this works,

I'm going to give Chuck or Greg a statement,

and they're going to tell me if that statement

is in fact fact, or if it is completely false

and it's fiction. So it'll be a little bit interesting.

These statements kind of range in a variety of

topics. So it'll be a little bit of fun here.

We'll see how it goes. Chuck, I'll start with

you. Starting off. Rather quickly Superman Red

Sun is the best Superman story ever told fact

or fiction? I would say fiction. I mean, it's

it's really good, but I don't know if I would

say it's the best Would you what would you say

would be the best? No, it's kind of putting you

on the spot. Yeah none of them are I'm going

to get a whole bunch of crap for that But I do

not like Superman even though I have the man

of steel ready to watch No Superman story is

a good story. They're all really boring at this

point. Sorry to say. I'm not really well versed

in some of the older Superman stuff, like the

pre -crisis era, like probably some of the older

listeners know, but I really like the Superman

Batman series and especially the one with Apocalypse.

I thought that was really cool. Oh, not Apocalypse.

It was on Apocalypse. For any goodness. His name

is escaping me dark side dark side. Yeah the

DC's version of Thanos basically But yeah, I

really like the one with him and uh, you know

Supergirl and he's after Supergirl and of course

he is they kind of have to go to apocalypse and

do some stuff and Batman gets the drop on dark

side. That's a really cool story. I like that

one That all sounded very sexual Yeah, I'm pretty

sure Dan's right on that All right, Greg your

turn factor fiction yingling aka logger for all

Scrantonians is better than any form of Sam Adams

fact I Don't even have anything to add on to

that. It's just fact. It's just better. It's

liquid bread Would it still be fact if you weren't

from Pennsylvania? Depending on where I'm located,

because a lot of areas don't have yingling, so

I would be stuck with it. But other than that,

I drink yingling more as an influence from my

father, because he drank that for the longest

time. Before that, I think he drank like Bush

and red dog which were really weird But by the

time I came to drinking age it was yingling and

I really got into that and used to that flavor

I can't really take anything with a high IPA

so Yeah, it doesn't have that It doesn't have

that much hops and in it. So I'm good on that

because I don't want to be licking a pine tree

Yeah, yingling in Pennsylvania is like, you know,

you say log, you know, logger. That is, you know,

you don't, nothing after that. That is what you

get because yingling is the hardest word ever

to pronounce, along with Marlboro. I had the

hardest time saying Marlboro when I worked at

the grocery store. All right. So back to you,

Chuck. And this is going on a completely different

angle, but it's fitting as we're in football

playoff mode right now. Pete Manning. Is a better

quarterback than Tom Brady, fact or fiction?

That is definitely fact. Even though Tom Brady

has more rings? Yeah, I don't even factor rings

into it because I mean Super Bowl is a team accomplishment

and I mean if you had that argument you could

say Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino which

is ridiculous. I'll remain silent on Shannon

Sharp, but um But yeah, I if I was if I was like

starting a franchise I would definitely take

Peyton Manning over Tom Brady wives. You would

take Tom Brady though. Uh, I don't know Even

though she's kind of stupid with the kids, but

I'm hearing something about on an ATV or something

I just read like the quick headline for it and

it sounds like she had a kid without a helmet

on or something Sure, that wasn't Tom Brady wasn't

paying attention because he was trying to get

a high five All right, Greg back to you on the

book front Monster Island is better than what

was the fact or fiction? If you're going for

a true Zombie like story world worthy is better

But if you're going for something a little bit

different I would definitely go Monster Island.

It has an interesting twist and an interesting

take on zombie lore that I really enjoyed. But

if you're going straight zombie, I would go World

War Z. I'm not sure if that makes it fact or

fiction, because I forget the order at this point.

But both of them are. Are great books and I recommend

both of them. I've been telling a lot of friends

to pick up Monster Island and the rest of the

series too. And that's available online, I think

for free, correct? I have no idea if it's free

online. I think because I read it online Yeah,

you recommended it to me and I ended up reading

it Yeah, I would agree. It's a little bit different

of a take on zombies But if you're in the zombies

and you wanted something different Yeah, if you're

into zombies definitely pick that up if you're

more into science fiction and getting kind of

tired of zombies I'd pick up Monster Island,

but I've been recommending that one for years

now and and the author of that book Penn State

grad so that would be right up Chuck Sally I

think as a Penn State grad nice nice All right

Chuck back to you We actually interesting because

we talked about this a little bit earlier earlier

But it's fitting arrow is already better than

smallville fact or fiction. Oh, you're killing

me Boy I'm gonna say fiction. I just think arrows

not established well enough yet if it goes If

it goes several more seasons and it keeps up

the way it's going then I'm probably gonna have

to say fact, but I mean right now Smallville

ran for 10 seasons It's really kind of I got

a soft spot in my heart for for Smallville and

especially like Superman's More of a favorite

character of mine than Green Arrow. So I enjoyed

Seeing all the little details of Superman's life

and how he grew up and stuff. I really enjoyed

that I'm thoroughly enjoying Speedy. Well, plus

like Smallville kind of took place and kind of

was on the air at a time when I was like coming

out of high school and in college. So it was

kind of around my age group. It was kind of really

relatable. So that was a cool part, too. And

I kind of grew up on a farm, so that was relatable

as well. And you also come from outer space.

So that's yeah. Yeah, I forgot to mention that

in the introduction Yeah, we should have mentioned

Chuck is a superhero on the weekend. So for those

All right. Yeah, it's great. I and I still have

yet to really watch either of them. So I am really

behind Greg I'm kind of interested in this one

because we talked about we briefly talked about

this previous previously But Liam Neeson is this

generations Charles Bronson fact or fiction?

Dead silence? Crickets? I've watched a lot of

Charles Bronson's Death Wish because my father

loves those movies and he has them on DVD. I

haven't seen any of Charles Bronson's other stuff.

I don't feel really qualified to answer that

Okay, that's wish was really good. It's a Punisher

style So I'd recommend watching that and I do

enjoy Liam Neeson a lot I think he's really great

his death wish the one where he he put the guy

in the the rotating plastic wrap thing Or when

he was like interrogating him my memory is I

don't know it was this Charles Bronson movie

and he was in a warehouse and there's this plastic

wrapping machine and he's trying to get the guy

to talk and he put him in there and he was getting

wrapped in plastic and he couldn't breathe and

he finally like caved and he ripped the plastic

it probably is one of them there's like a billion

of those and he does a lot of uh torture type

stuff my favorite is when uh the one guy He has

a trap set up. It's essentially a mousetrap.

The guy opens the window and a nail goes through

him. A board comes flying up as soon as he opens

the window and he gets a nail into him. And then

he yells, nailed it. Catchphrase. All right,

Chuck, back to you. Fact or fiction, Andrew Garfield

is a better Spider -Man than Tobey Maguire. Fact

fact he is a better spider -man, but he is not

a better Peter Parker in my opinion Yeah, I think

he just looks like spider -man. He's so linky

and yeah. Yes. I mean I love how I Love how he

wisecracks while he's fighting a villain In the

first amazing spider -man. I thought that was

that was something that they left out of the

Tobey Maguire movies a little bit I mean, they

kind of I think they tried to do it, but it was

just kind of hokey. They tried to. Yeah. But

I think Andrew Garfield was better at it. It

was more like it reminded me of where the comics,

you know, like like that's one of Spider -Man's

strengths is he distracts his enemies with his

banter. So I thought Andrew Garfield was good

at that. But his Peter Parker was a little weird

because I don't know. It didn't really remind

me of the comics as much but that's I mean, that's

just me I guess. Yeah. I mean have you read the

ultimate spiderman at all? No, I haven't I should

I should I actually have like the first huge

volume of it. You might actually like it It's

it's interesting. It does fall a little bit more

in line with that the Peter Parker He's a little

more I guess emotional like you know, if you

would kind of like cocky. Does he have an attitude

kind of? Yeah, I think he's more Yeah, he's a

little more Less reserved, I would say, than

the other Peter Parker. But I haven't run a huge

amount of it. I've only read a small bit, but

I picked that up back when we went to New York

Comic Con back in the day. Got stuck in an elevator?

Yes, got stuck in an elevator. Greg, back to

you. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this

one, because I don't know if I know that or not,

but fact or fiction, the creatures in 28 Days

Later are zombies. Fact or fiction? 28 Days Later?

They're not zombies, because that is definitely

a vampire flick. I think what you're looking

for is I Am Legend. Because in I Am Legend, they're

supposed to be zombies, but they act very much

like vampires being afraid of the light and all

that kind of stuff. I was again in 28 days later.

They're like the infected or whatnot the the

ones that uh, the Danny Boyle movie like in England.

Oh That that one that one I was thinking of What's

the one 30 days of night? Yeah, I was thinking

you're talking about 30 days a night But 28 days

later that they're definitely definitely zombies,

I believe So I think that's a fact I am legend

they're vampires not zombies they're supposed

to be zombies but they're vampires if in 30 days

of night they're they're vampires the best thing

i remember about i am legend is driving the red

mustang through an empty new york city that would

be awesome yes and having that dog that's awesome

dog yeah no i uh the dog thing killed me Dogs

dying spoiler alert, but I don't know. It's sad.

All right This was gonna this one's a little

bit of a fun one. So don't don't feel bad if

you don't have a direct response, but figures

But fact or fiction she has lost that loving

feeling And now it's gone gone fact because they

they state it several times in the song And I

hate it when she does that let me just add that

I hope that they never remake or reboot Top Gun

because they could never touch the original.

And Tom Cruise needs a job, you know. Well, yeah.

All right. It's a couple more here. Let me get

a good one for you, Greg. I've been answering

chucks way better than I have been answering

my own. I think it's mine. I'm giving you bad

ones. So here we go. How did this get made? Is

the best podcast going today? That is fact I

love that one. I love Jason Manzoukas. I love

him on the league. I love him on the podcast.

It's just so Frickin funny and for those that

don't know the house How did this get made as

Paul Cheers podcast about? Really bad movies

and they talk about them and it's if you haven't

listened to it listen to it because it's hilarious

They have yes they do Nice. Yes, they do. The

birdemic episode is a great one. And so is the

one where they talk about Howard the Duck and

any live episode is awesome. Jason Manzoukis

gets totally like unrestrained and just does

whatever. I don't know if you listen to the last

one, but the last one I did that the classic

Jack Frost movie. Yes, I did watch that one.

And there is a specific moment about when they

give second opinions. And it was one of I was

listening to it at work. They were really depressing

I was depressing and funny at the same time.

I don't know how that gets pulled off, but it

gets they do it Yeah, and it's like it's one

of those odd when I started laughing and I had

to catch myself and pretend I was coughing and

Stop listening to it. I'm like people probably

think I'm crazy right now. I also listen to it

at work and I'm at a small photography studio

and it doesn't I don't care if anybody thinks

I'm crazy because I I don't care for a couple

of my coworkers, so. But yeah, it's one of the

funniest podcasts out there. I love that podcast.

There's many that I've been listening to lately,

especially on Nerdist. You will finally really

listen to how did this get made, but it's some

of the funniest stuff I've heard. Rural country

is pretty funny, too. Even if you're not in the

sports, but it's a good show. Back to Chuck.

I think we'll end with a good one. Chuck, back

for fiction. Tombstone is the best Western in

the last 30 years. Fact. Fact. Does anything

come close? No, not even close for me. I don't

know. I just I love Tombstone. I love everything

about it. I love the actors. Kurt Russell, Val

Kilmer. They're awesome in it. It's actually.

From what I understand, it's the most accurate

account of, you know, what happened at the OK

Corral of any movie made. It's also the most

accurate account of a mustache. Yes. Velcommer's

mustache is priceless in that movie. I was talking

about Sam Elliott. Oh, OK. You got to get another

banquet beer. That's true. Yeah. Pork the other

way. Me, you know. Yeah, that's I don't know.

That's an awesome movie. I mean. Powers booth

is really good in it and I don't know everybody's

just really good in that movie. It is it is a

classic It's a really fun film a lot better than

Wyatt Earp for sure. But uh, have you seen that

name? I had my dad listens to so many westerns

and one of the team old tv shows Wyatt Earp the

uh The in the song at the beginning he sings

it constantly I And all it is it's like it's

like by men and all they're singing is why it

or why? The old Western TV show theme songs are

the best to like the best the best old Western

is is Rifleman with Chuck Connors, but I'm getting

kind of tired of those because I've seen them

multiple times Paul That is Mark Mark McCain

the son of Lucas McCain the the main the main

protagonist in that TV show. It's very annoying

this one Well, I appreciate that Alright last

one here. I think we'll end on a controversial

one. So I'm curious or fiction Stanley's work

on the X -Men is overrated God is that to both

of us or just it can be I'll throw it up there.

Whatever you guys feel like I'll throw that to

Greg first I'm curious that you know, I know

you have a massive x -men collection both of

you guys do we're oxy I think all lovers of the

x -men here. So I'm curious though Greg Do you

how do you feel about Stan Lee's work on the

x -men? The fact that he created them He's awesome,

but it's it's just a different type of writing

style back then, and it just kind of progresses

slowly, which I really don't care for where they're

explaining every little detail about how somebody's

getting kicked in the face. Let that be drawn

on the page and not talked about on the page.

I'd rather see the amazing artists take that.

Yeah, I agree. I mean the Something has to be

left to the artist to kind of fill in I love

Stan Lee for his Creativity his creative mind

and the things that he's created, but I'm not

really crazy about Any of his writing it's just

like I mean it was a different era of course

like if I grew up back then I'd probably feel

differently, but it just doesn't leave much the

imagination and the part I always thought was

funny is like You know, a guy is like, you know,

flipping through the air and he has this huge

internal thought bubble about what he's going

to do. And I'm like, OK, if you're thinking this,

like this would literally take five minutes to

think out like you're flipping through the air

for like a half of a second. He's doing it. Matrix

style. Let's be serious here. He's doing it matrix

style. So he has all the time in the world. Yeah,

I'm on the same line as you I mean you have to

consider the time period a lot of that obviously

was just a question that a Purposely provokable

question, but but Stanley is a god. He's a very

very small tiny physical But he is a god. Yeah,

go check. Um, well just I was just gonna say

that the thing you also have to keep in mind

is Comics today are written for much older audiences

than they were back then So, I mean kind of back

then they kind of had to explain those things

to to the younger kids like what is doing? They

can't figure they are they really are I Don't

know why we keep them like seriously Why why

is that man's foot and the other giant? Beast

looking man's face. How why is that happening?

How did that get there? I mean, on a side note,

one of my favorite things about comics, because

this is another thing about me. I'm an engineer.

I'm a civil engineer. And I took a couple classes

in college about physics and different things.

But I really like in comics when they actually

allude to something that's true about physics

or some sort of science, some sort of branch

of science. I like when they make references

to that stuff and it's true. And you're like,

oh yeah, I remember that from college. That's

a really cool thing for me. I like that. I remember

going on Marvel database and just researching

all the history and all the science behind all

the different powers and whatnot. It's interesting

how really in -depth they get with some of that

stuff. Yeah, they actually do their homework

pretty well. A lot of stuff there. They're dead

on and I know Neil deGrasse Tyson like the famous

Physicist, I believe I think he's a physicist.

I'm not sure but Pluto's a planet I remember

he he did a lot of breakdowns of like great Hulk

strength and like how much Thor's hammer would

actually weigh and it's interesting like how

That's the thing. I like about I think I like

about Marvel over DC is like there's more science

base to it and it's not There's more of a justification

even if it might be far -fetched and yeah, they

do And if you're, I mean, this is going to the

extreme side, but if you're really into like

the science and physics aspects of comics, there's

a great book that I have actually. It's called

Physics of Superheroes by James Kakalios. And

that he's actually a physics professor and he

uses this book to teach his physics class in

college, which I really wish that was at my college

when I was in college. But he. He actually uses

it to teach his lessons and stuff. And some of

the chapters in there are pretty cool. He covers

Spider -Man, Ant -Man, Flash, Superman. It's

pretty cool. Awesome awesome. So yeah, that's

fact or fiction. We'll be doing some of those

games different We have tons of ideas floodgates

are just open basically And if you have any certain

suggestions games anything you'd like us to talk

about let us know Actually, I just created an

email for talking in circles. It's talking in

circles at live .com It was the only email that

still had that domain open. So I did search for

it pretty hard. But uh, so it's Talking in circles

at live .com. You can also leave a comment section

on the episode post which will be on geocastradio

.com so How we're gonna finish this episode.

Well, we come up with a few ideas and figure

wolfs end with like an editorial each episode

uh something that's on one of our minds something

we want to talk about and greg actually came

up with this idea and he has a specific person

in mind he would like like to I know read a letter

to and that of course is the infamous brian michael

bendis the kind of the man in the marvel world

right now for a lot of different reasons and

i know greg he have certain opinions on on him

and his work And I think you'd like to basically,

we know he's listening, you know, we all go way

back. Oh yeah, he's definitely listening. Do

you like bring it over to you, and you can kind

of go over your letter, Brian Michael Bendis.

All right. I have something written here. I'm

not sure if I'm gonna keep with what I have here,

but I'll see what we got. To Marvel comic writer,

Brian Michael Bendis. Thank you. First off, I

want you to know that I went to college for my

BFA, Bachelor's in Fine Arts. With that in mind,

I have learned an important lesson when I critique.

That lesson is you should always start off with

some positives. I also don't want to sound like

a dick. Not that I haven't already, but... Fact

of the matter is I think you're a good writer

with some great ideas. The thing is, I only have

one or two issues with your writing. The first

issue I have just happened in your last big event,

X -Men Battle of the Atom. It started out so

amazingly awesome with Stan Lee's X -Men being

brought into the ranks of the current X -Men.

That was a stroke of genius, Mr. Bendis. No matter

the fan's age, you had someone there for them.

We got to see where these characters came from

and how far they have have come, or even how

far they have fallen. It just left so many great

possibilities and really high expectations for

more awesomeness. There's also too much of a

good thing, though. Bringing the past X -Men

to present, awesome. Pour in some future X -Men,

okay. That seems like a lot of characters, but

I think I can keep up. Throw in even more future

X -Men and time traveling, With part of never

being resolved. Maybe you'll write that in the

future Please and now I'm just confused I don't

consider myself stupid, but five groups of x

-men is just overkill It would have been helpful

to have caption boxes to keep something straight

But I never got such help they used to they actually

had those in a couple issues not that long ago

They'd have oh, this is this person Iceman throws

snowballs that kind of stuff My brain overheating

does not lead to enjoyable reading just so I

am my second issue is your endings You seem to

like giant battles that take up an entire comic

You did this with the ending of Secret Invasion,

which I did appreciate. I did appreciate it because

I got to see those huge battle scenes illustrated

by Francis Lennel Yu's incredible artwork. I

love his stuff. He was doing New Avengers. It

was just a different style that I haven't really

seen before in comic books. Anyway, I digress.

The thing is, this type of ending never left

me satisfied, especially since it was facilitated

by Mr. Fantastic inventing a don't -know -how

-to -resolve -an -issue machine. Those machines

always made me hate reading the Fantastic Four.

I still don't really enjoy reading the Fantastic

Four. All the great lead up to such a cop -out.

To ending, I think that is what gives me such

a lasting bad impression of you. An ending should

be more memorable. Yours are not. The Battle

of the Atoms ending is currently being forgotten.

It's completely gone out of my mind, to be quite

honest. I wrote this about a week ago. Completely

gone. With such great lead -up and awesome projects,

it's disappointing. So that's it, Mr. Bendis.

Those are my issues. Marvel gives you a lot of

responsibility. He writes everything. So you

are probably hella busy writing multiple titles

or advising on them. In my mind, I like to think

you just got rushed and couldn't get exactly

what you wanted written done in time. Maybe next

time it can be different. Thanks, Greg. Very

well said. I have been so out of the Marvel world

recently, but interesting. I've just been keeping

up on the x -men to be quite honest and soon

as I switched over to just reading x -men Guess

who was there? Hello, but I cannot agree more

with the ending of secret invasion that was That

was a huge letdown the the fix -it -all machine

is perfect because that's basically what happened.

It's like I feel like that's every every time

I read fantastic for it's mr. Fantastic is like

up and here's a machine resolved He is Mr. Fix

-It, but yeah. So, Bendis, we know where you're

listening, so we would love your appreciation.

And Greg gave, I think, a lot of good pointers

there, so we'd appreciate next time, come out,

and you can improve. There's some good there,

but there's room for improvement, for sure. I

would like to hear also I'd love to hear the

if the listeners have somebody that they would

like to write a letter to I I think that would

be great if we could Have some of their thoughts

on the issue. Yeah, that would be shoot not on

specifically Brian Michael Bendis but on Anybody

else that they really want to write an open letter

to yeah, and it can be it could be positive too.

So yeah I tried to have a little bit of positive

in there. I do think his start -off ideas, especially

for X -Men Battle of the Atom, were awesome,

bringing the old X -Men into the new universe,

like I said. I thought that was really great.

You were going to say something? I was just gonna

say somebody write to Joseph Casada and tell

him to stop screwing up Marvel That might be

you might need a novel on that one. It seemed

like when he took over like Everything changed

from what I liked. So All right, so anything

else before we bring this episode this pilot

inaugural, you know, this might win in history

to an end I just wanted to bring up a little

sports note. This weekend is the AFC and NFC

championship games and the NFL playoffs. I just

want to get your guys thoughts on the winners

and who's going to be in the Super Bowl. We have

the Patriots and the Broncos and the Seahawks

and the Niners. I personally, I think it's going

to be Broncos and Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

What do you guys think? Agreed. See, there's

a thing, though. There's the part of me that

what I want. That happen and yeah, and then what

I think is gonna happen and my worry is if I

pick what I want to happen Then the opposite

will happen And the thing is the Patriots don't

make it through I'm good and the thing is New

York Giants aren't in the playoffs So it's like,

you know, they are the the kryptonite to the

Patriots and yes I am a Giants fan and I forgot

football happened this season. So I don't know

how they did but this might be recorded this

might be released after that but it's so people

will know right away if we're wrong or not, but

I'm gonna I'm gonna say you guys picked the Niners

and or the Seahawks and the Broncos. Yeah. Yeah

I'm gonna say the Seahawks and the Niners. I

think the Niners are gonna I think the Seahawks

are getting a little bit too Big in their britches.

I would say and I think I think they're kind

of reading their own press clippings a little

bit too much But I'm gonna say I'll go Broncos

Niners and I'll say we want to give renters winners

the Super Bowl as well See if we'll get right

with that I think many shouldn't win his Super

Bowl and I think I could see him retiring at

the end of the year if he does so Yeah, I think

I think the Broncos are gonna win and that might

be a little bit of wishful thinking but I would

like to see Peyton get another Super Bowl I'd

like to see Peyton win Think the the Seahawks

have been a little bit more consistent than the

Broncos have So I'm gonna go consistent at consistent

at performance enhancing drugs. Yes. Yes, of

course They are more they are more competent

at eating skittles, that's why they're gonna

make you they're good skittle eaters. That's

for sure. Yes They go beast mode on skittles

Alright, so so yeah, that's it's been our first

episode and looking forward to this. It's gonna

be a lot of fun I had a lot of fun. So hopefully

the eyes out there listening did too as well

So thank you for listening for talking in circles.

I've been Dan I've been Chuck and I have been

Greg or a facsimile thereof And we'll see you

next week. Remember to keep tuned to talking

in circles. Bye
