About this Episode
Hey, this is Steve Bloom, and you are listening
to the Geekcast Radio Network. You are now on
the inside of what I like to call the circle
of trust. We are all connected in a great circle
of life. You know something Bert? What? I think
you and I are going in circles. It feels like
we're going in circles. The circuit is now complete.
When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I
am the master. Because it's a circle. Yeah, we
heard about the circle. Yes, we're familiar with
shapes. Hey, this is Chuck. This is Greg. And
this is Dan. And we are... Talking in Circles
brought to you by the Geekcast Radio Network,
the podcast that is back and better than ever.
Yes, after a week off, we are back and we are
back in full force. We have a lot of fun stuff
to talk about today, a fully jammed episode coming
at you. But before we get to all the fun, how's
the week been going for you guys? The week was
pretty good. How'd you enjoy your 4th of July
holiday? It was good, wasn't too exciting, I
guess. Just had a little kind of a little barbecue
at my uncle's place and that was about it. It
was very rainy here in PA. So oh jeez Yeah, it's
been a damper on things. This has been the summer
of rain. It's been like crazy thunderstorms Yeah,
we had a tornado watch today. I think we're like
I get three a week I think if we get four in
a row we get like a free car or something. I
don't know Yeah It was actually it sunk like
last week. My power went out for a long time
It's the fact that like I actually I was supposed
to podcast at night you couldn't podcast and
if it wasn't for the fact that I went home for
the for the Vacation it was still out for a while.
It was just sweet so much flooding going on.
It was insane Yeah, I feel like there's the water
going on in the u .s It just either you have
way too much and you're flooding or you have
none like there's no in between Too bad we couldn't
hear. Tom Selleck stealing water from a fire
hydrant. Is that a reference? I don't understand.
Yeah, he actually did that. Nice. Nice. Do you
think he was fine for it? I don't know. My mom
told me this morning when I woke up, it was kind
of weird. She's like, Greg, wake up. You got
to point news to share about Tom Selleck. She's
like, do you know Tom Selleck? I'm like, I know
of him. Don't actually know the man and she's
like, well, he's stealing water California has
a flood. I'm like, hey Keeping you updated on
Tom. So yeah, but uh, Greg Greg, how are things
going with you? All right. I also didn't have
crazy fourth of July. I just ate a lot of food
But I did get to meet one individual who i'm
sorry is a better friend than both of you combined
his name is connor i'm sorry he's a good guy
he's a good guy he is a good guy yeah since we've
actually recorded we were actually met in real
life because i went home for the for the fourth
of july holiday so you got to meet my my son
which was a lot of fun uh in the classic meeting
place with dunkin donuts Yes. He is a coffee
addict. I don't know why you keep feeding him
coffee, Dan. I think protective service has something
to say about that, but... It's what he asked
for, you know. I guess we'll let it go. I think
it's the creamer, so it balances out. Instead
of creamer, we use the formula, so it's okay.
That's my model. Oh, okay. So that helps out
with the coffee jimmy's. Yeah, exactly. Though
it's weird having a baby that doesn't blink.
Staring contest go His favorite thing it right
now is looking like he's really into looking
He gave me an awesome look when I was holding
him he was like Who do you hang out with you
know Greg? That's awesome knew but I know besides
the 4th of July, you did have a rather life -changing
experience. I don't know if you want to talk
about it. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Definitely life
-changing. It was actually before 4th of July,
and we just haven't had a time to really talk
about it since I got it. But I finally got my
tattoo. Quite painful. It is nerdy. It is X -Men
logo. It hurt a lot, actually. I have it underneath
my arm, and I didn't realize that is also one
of the sensitive areas, along with on top of
bone. It also hurts to get it underneath your
arm. Yeah a couple points it felt instead of
like getting a Sunburn applied I liked Sunburn
applied it turned into hot exacto knife digging
into my skin Which I was not expecting and it
was also fun when a random person came in and
Asked me if I wanted to be tickled by them What
what kind of tattoo parlor did you go to apparently
really weird one? I don't know I just was like,
I like this guy's work. He has nice straight
lines and his line work is very good. So I'll
go with him. And yeah, I get crazy people coming
in while I'm getting tattooed. So, you know.
Hey, you know, a tattoo and free tickles. You
can't really ask more. So yeah. So Greg has totally
upped his geek cred. Now is, you know, donning
the X -Men tattoo. That's impressive. Yeah. And
I also get along with bikers now. Not really.
You have skull I have a I have an x -men tattoo
So I went but I don't think a layman may even
realize what it is Yeah, because the way I have
it tattooed because it's not like an actual just
x -men Logo like X MEN. It's a circle and then
I have like it's kind of like a directional pad
type of situation going on so it kind of has
the the skin being the logo and the actual ink
is kind of uh the negative space uh that you
would see from it I guess is the best way to
explain it yeah it's like uh it's it can double
bill as a gamer tattoo and a x -men tattoo so
yeah kind of yeah I guess maybe I could throw
a photo up on Facebook and people can check it
out and and compare geeky tattoos I I have I
will probably never join the club, personally.
Being wimpy and combination of just not feeling
like I would be able to think of something that
I would want permanently at my body, because
I would just freak out and pick something really
stupid and then regret it immediately. Well,
I kind of picked out something stupid, but I
like it, so... Yeah. I mean, I'd be like, I want...
I was going to say My Little Pony tattoo, but
I know people that have gotten those. Really?
Oh, yeah. Like in real life, you know people
that got those not just like oh I saw this guy
on the internet who got a My little pony tattoo.
It's not someone I met in real life, but I've
met them vicariously and yeah, so, okay I mean
everyone's got their thing, you know, I'm sure
like, you know, people will sport tattoos something
like that That's why I would I would go with
like the I probably go with like a Giants tattoo
because I figure like that's something I would
I would stay with but then you know Then you
would also have to associate yourself with some
really stupid people. Speaking of the Giants,
have you guys heard about the story involving
Jason Pierre Paul? I have. Yeah, I heard you
got a tattoo of a firework going off on his hand
Yeah, you got a tattoo of a missing finger on
his hand Yeah for those that know don't know
Jason Peter Paul is a defensive end for the New
York Giants actually, you know arguably one of
their better defensive players though some Myself
feel like you maybe last few years. He's been
plagued by injury So he's not been nearly as
the player that people helped him to be but over
that was July weekend. I guess he Decided to
be really stupid and had a firework Firework
incident all it doesn't indicate indicate what
he did. It just said there was a incident with
the firework that left his hands injured to the
point where he's getting his index finger removed,
which Is kind of important for a football player
I would assume But yeah, yeah any in the Giants
like it's interesting because he's actually in
a contract here right now try and suffer through
their offer from him and Which he wasn't gonna
sign anyways, but like there's this huge thing
to do I was reading where the Giants actually
sent players sent like medical staff down to
visit him and he refused to let him in My guess
is probably cuz like it's worse than he wants
to let on so People debating like is he gonna
meet the miss the season? Like what's it gonna
be like so I'm like, how dumb are you? That you
would do something like that and literally cost
yourselves millions upon millions of dollars
because You wanted to see what happens when you
hold an M80 in your hand or something I have
I don't know what he did unless he was like fighting
off firework aliens or saving a child from like
a blast of fireworks like there's no excuse for
being that done when you're an adult No, if you
just wanted to not get millions of dollars, why
couldn't you just give it to us? I I should have
wrote him a letter. I don't know what I was thinking
I mean, it's definitely a boned move. But actually
what intrigues me more about this story was the
fact that um reporter Adam Schefter of ESPN felt
the need to tweet a photo of Jason Pierre Paul's
confidential medical paperwork. Yeah. Wow. And
I know like ESPN said they didn't break any HIPAA
laws or anything by doing so. But in fact, the
person that broke the law was the health care
worker that released it to them. They'll probably
end up losing their job. But still worth it.
Still it doesn't take much common sense on ESPN's
part or Adam Schefter's part to say hey, wait
a second This is some confidential type stuff,
you know, maybe he wouldn't appreciate it if
I just showed it to the entire internet I mean,
come on Schefter like use your brain, you know,
I didn't even know that happened. That is kind
of ridiculous Yeah, I just heard about that today
It's crazy like so many of these reporters are
just like little twerps, you know, like That's
it feels like the perfect word to me Like they
don't care whose privacy they violate as long
as they're the first to get the story out, you
know, yeah, yeah Here's this it is. It's like
a tabloid journalism and it's just the excuse
that we're the first one to report that story
It's like maybe just wait. It's it's all right,
you know Mean I usually like Adam Schefter. I
do think at times are kind of crazy with the
like getting the access information about disguised
like injury It isn't saying just the resources
that they go through to find out the most mundane
information ever. I know I personally I've never
really liked the guy. He's just like too over
-the -top for me was like like you said the smallest
stuff and it's like, you know, he's texting during
the middle of the Interviews that he's in and
stuff. He's like just re -achieve word that Tim
Tebow wiped his butt like I Need to know that
information though for my fantasy team this year
I need to know if Tim Tebow is wiping his butt
and how well Front or front to back. What does
it do? I need this information from fantasy football
Chuck and I mean, how does he lay the toilet
paper? Is it? You know over or under I mean that's
that's huge like that is that's gonna that's
a telltale sign of how he's gonna Tell us exactly
how hit the spin of the ball goes for them Yeah,
it is it has become like the espn Their news
has just become ridiculous. It's just tabloid
and it's it's becoming more like entertainment
news Which is it's all like relationship stuff
and like it's going in tmz basically Definitely
definitely adding to my increasing dislike of
espn It is becoming unwatchable. The only thing
I can watch on ESPN is like the 30 for 30 docs
and like Mike and Mike in the morning. Oh, yeah,
those are really good. Yeah, it's like that's
what they got. Everything else is like and I
think mostly because the 30 for 30 docs are done
by people outside of ESPN. So people that actually
have common sense and personality. Yeah. Yeah,
they do have like a few good Jeremy Schaap is
one. I feel like he usually he does pretty good
work most of the time. But we are really ungeekifying
our episode as we're talking. So we can maybe
switch it up a little bit. And there is some
geeky stuff to talk about. And for a second segment,
we're going to play one of our favorite games,
Sequel Reboot and Destroy. And largely inspired
by some of the recent movies that are coming
out. There's like a ton of reboots that are currently
working. And we got a trailer for, I guess it's
not, is it a reboot? Is it a sequel? We need
a word that's like both a reboot and a sequel.
I don't know. Seaboot, maybe? Was it a racehorse?
What was that check? Wasn't that a racehorse?
It was. Seaboot. It was the sequel to Seabiscuit.
The trailer for Creed, the Rocky -related film,
I guess you would say. Sorry, Michael B. Jordan,
directed by the guy who brought us to Field Station.
Chuck, I got to ask you, because I know you're
a huge Rocky fan. What did you think of this
trailer? Are you looking forward to it, or are
you thinking are you going to pass? Honestly,
it looks really good to me, and I'm really looking
forward to seeing it. Of course, I'm a huge Rocky
fan, like you said. I can be honest here, I can
be unbiased enough to admit there really doesn't
seem to be anything new here. I mean, it kind
of looks like a combination of Rocky V when he
gets to train somebody and Rocky Balboa, which
kind of had that more modern feel to it. But
that being said, I think it's one of those deals
where you like if you like the Rocky movies,
you're going to like this. If you're iffy on
them, you kind of get sick of them. then it's
probably not going to bring enough new style
to make you like it, to be honest. Yeah, I think
that's definitely a good point. It may not seem
like something that's nearly breaking the bake
of virginality or so, but Greg, what did you
use? Did you get a chance to see the trailer?
Yes, sorry, I didn't. Just didn't, sorry. That's
okay, because I didn't see the other trailer
we're going to talk about in just a second. I
think the one thing that might... Make it a little
bit different that the one angle I think that
they could approach that might be a little bit
interesting I guess it would be similar to rocky
five though Hopefully a lot better is the relationship
with like Michael B Jordan character Creed's
son and rocky I think that could lead to a lot
of interesting dynamic for sure. Oh, this is
a Rocky film? I thought it was about Creed Branton
from The Office. No, that would be amazing. I
would watch that immediately. That's funny, I
was just watching the office today. That's like
literally as we walked in. I just finished the
entire thing again. I was watching an episode
and I forgot how amazing it was, but it's Scott's
Tots. Oh, yeah, that one get that one makes me
feel anxious because I just feel so bad for that
episode. Yeah, it is. I forgot. I forgot about
that episode and I was just like, wow, this is
anyways. If you've not seen the office, it's
a good one to watch, but. But yeah, I'm looking
forward to it. I really like True Fill Station.
I like Michael B. Jordan a lot. So I agree with
you, Chuck, that maybe it's not gonna, it's probably
gonna follow the same formula, but I like that
formula. It's worked really well for, I would
say five out of the six movies. And if this one
can do well, I'd be looking forward to it. What
I really liked about the trailer too is how it
didn't indicate that it was related to Rocky
until like halfway through. It's established
itself and then it... let it slide a little bit
by little bit until you see Sylvester Stallone
walk out. One thing I thought was interesting
was I was talking to some people at work about
it and my boss was saying that he thought it
kind of looked dumb and his reasoning was simply
because Stallone's old give it up already. I
personally don't think that's a valid reason
but unfortunately that's the opinion that a lot
of people are going to have. I mean, if they
don't pay attention to the trailer, like, or
if they're blind, they're going to be like, oh,
Rocky is fighting again. This is stupid. You
know, like, but I mean, you hate to say it, but
that's a lot of people are going to say that,
you know. Why would they make a movie with him
fighting again? Like, you know, grudge match
like that. That's a movie that happened two years
ago that no one talks about. I think he'd be
good in that role, their mentor and stuff. I
know, like we said, we saw him do it before,
but. I think it makes a little bit more sense
now. He's a little bit older. A lot a bit older,
I guess you would say. His face is bigger. His
veins are popping out more. Am I one of the things
that looks like his head's gonna explode? It's
because he took a bullet to the head in that
one movie. It's like he's becoming his own real
-life bobblehead. He's a pop vinyl. I'm actually
curious about a couple of things though. I'm
kind of curious if they have rocky Sun again
Because that's oh, yeah, that's always been a
weird relationship throughout the rocky movies
like yeah It's kind of like they're on good terms
then they're not and they are then they're not
in rocky balboa they kind of started off like
they're not on good terms the son didn't want
anything to do with them and then by the end
he's like in his corner cheering him on and everything
and you know he's a believer in everything but
i'm kind of interested if they actually have
rocky son in it too and where they go with that
but be interesting i mean that i mean the actor
is not doing a lot he was he's like i think he
is in the he was a hero so i think he's in the
reboot of it but uh i do like that guy for the
most part so that would be kind of cool seeing
if he returns to it uh But it's kind of cool
to they're using the same restaurant that was
in Rocky Balboa Yeah, that's in this so they
are trying to you know, have a little ties together.
I like it stuff I'm also curious to see if they
um, if they touch on anything with the russian
Yeah, since we're like, you know where he's at
and everything since he was the one that killed
Apollo in rocky 4 but based on what Apollo's
son is saying in the trailer he's like i don't
know him he he ain't got nothing to do with me
like it doesn't really sound like he cares who
killed his father but i'm kind of curious if
they do anything with the russian or if he has
any sort of resentment to him for killing his
father in the ring or what yeah that would be
interesting if they would bring that up i mean
that also could just be the angle of him like
rejecting his father then coming to accept him
and all that good stuff yeah It's funny because
of the rocky theme I've actually when Connor
right my son does what's called tummy time It's
like they try to like it's been the process of
learning the crawl and stuff like that. I hum
the the rocky theme I call him baby push -ups
as he's trying to you know train for his his
big momentum of crawling so He got him signed
up to climb Everest next week Exactly. I mean
it got it got a wear out that that coffee somehow.
So is he gonna be? Lifting random objects in
a barn. I'm gonna have them chase squirrels around
just I Don't know bottom line. I love anything
rocky. So I'm most likely gonna enjoy this Yeah,
I'm definitely gonna check it out myself. So
But the one trailer that I didn't like to see
that I know Greg and Chuck you both saw and it's
again something I guess not necessarily a reboot
because it's but it's related to something that
it's a huge part of our childhood that we've
talked about on this podcast a few times and
that's Goosebumps and that trailer was just recently
released so Greg I'll start with you and what
did you think I know you talked about this movie
a little while ago I was curious if you uh if
you're looking forward to seeing it or if the
trailer turned you off I just found it odd that
they they did like a very very very very quick
mention of that Jack Black is playing R .L. Stine.
They didn't like really set him up. So it kind
of was an odd trailer for me at first. If I didn't
know the background information already that
he is R .L. Stine, like I would have been completely
lost and like, what the hell is this? And it
would have just been like a weird, goofy horror
movie to me. But since I knew that It kind of
flowed a little bit better for me and everything
and it looks I wish it was a little bit more
scary, but Goosebumps was for kids and it kind
of had this Goofy horror sense to it. But um,
this just seems kind of a little bit more goofy
than Scary for the most part, but I like scary
movie type of scare like kind of goofy Comedy
years it no more more kiddish definitely more
little kid like Pratt fall Jerry Lewis kind of
Physical humor kind of stuff like old -school
screwball comedy like three suges step. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah that kind of stuff But with CGI monsters
Chuck, how did you feel about it? It's interesting.
I thought the exact same thing because I really
was kind of hoping that it was more on the horror
side, like more scary. Cause like, I know the
books were meant for kids in a very young reading
level back in the day, but when you're at that
reading level, these books are kind of terrifying
when you're reading them. When you're like eight
years old, they are very scary to you. So I was
kind of hoping that they would parallel that
correlation to like us growing up and it would
be a scary movie, but. I was kind of surprised
that they went this sort of quirky and fun route,
but I kind of knew that when they said Jack Black
was going to be in it. He kind of brings that
with him. Do you think that's also kind of how
our culture is in some ways where movies or things
for kids, they can't approach being scary or
something like that. You know, it has to be very
safe. Is that just more of a product of the environment
or do you think it's because of Jack Black being
in that role? Well, I think it's part of Jack
Black, but I think it's. Also like a target audience.
I think they're Targeting the younger crowd again,
maybe to try to stir their interest in it and
stuff like if they were targeting like late teens
and 20 -somethings they would make it more like
a I don't want to say insidious but like some
of those more really terror movies that like
and scare the crap out of you, but Do you think
they can? Maybe approach it on the level of something
like are you afraid of the dark or goosebumps
the TV show? Like are we unable to make things
like that anymore? Do you think I'm not sure
I Really didn't see too much of the goosebumps
TV show and they saw like one or two episodes
and That to me looked more scary than this movie
is gonna be Yeah, I guess I mean I could point
to something like Harry Potter which I guess
is more on the darker side So maybe just what
they were going for for this movie. So Two just
assumed it would be kind of like a horror kid
film or something like that, but not approaching
that just makes me think that maybe they're afraid
that they wouldn't be able to make a horror film
for kids because it wouldn't work or they wouldn't,
you know, they would get yelled at by parent
groups or something like that. Yeah. Though you
could be like that one movie theater that instead
of playing Inside Out, they played Insidious
3. Oh, nice. Yeah, yeah. That was very nice of
them. It's work. Well last year they it was I
forget what kid movie it was a theater to also
instead of playing like a Might have been how
to train your dragon or something like that.
They played nymphomaniac too Nice is like basically
has hardcore point in it for kids with like immediately
but so equally Yeah, you also have to wonder
it's like when you start seeing the trailers
for all these horror films Don't you kind of
get the idea that maybe you're in the wrong movies?
Like this stuff did not happen by accident, I'm
sorry these are purposeful things that were done
I'm going to slice the penis into the scene right
here There it is. What are you at like a 90s
Disney animator? No fight club Total Fight Club
reference. How many Goosebumps do you guys read
as a kid? Like all of them or like half of them?
I think I had all the Goosebumps stuff. I had
one of the Pick Your Adventure type Goosebumps
book. And then I had a couple of Fear Street
books. And then also I had another R .L. Stein
book that wasn't Goosebumps related, wasn't scary.
It was called Space Cadets. Interesting. Yeah.
I don't know. I think maybe... Remember Say Cheese
and Die? Oh, yeah. I had one of them, Choose
Your Adventure one too. I don't know how many
I owned, but I think I read a lot because I felt
like every time we had to pick a book from...
the library or something if that was available
i would get one so it has to be 20 plus or so
i would think if not around that yeah that's
that's around where i was i don't actually know
how and how many they ended up making like the
last i knew i thought they were up to like 60
but they gotta be they could have did more than
that i have no idea There were pretty quick reads
even for a kid, you know, they weren't really
yeah. Oh, yeah I remember picking them up like
remember that scholastic thing that would come
to the school and oh the best day ever. Yes You
could buy a book for like three dollars or something
or as I know it as I really came to know it buying
sports posters cuz that's And those a lot of
novelty pencils and stuff Exactly. Exactly. Yeah,
I'd take one of those home and like read it like
three hours or something Yeah, oh man, that was
like the best day ever, this Scholastic Book
Day. Remember, they were always a good thing.
Do you remember the one, there was a teacher
that we had that was like trying to tell everybody
that Goosebumps books were bad for your mind
and stuff and... Oh yeah. I can't remember who
it was, but she would always tell everyone like,
like, oh those books are bad for you, you shouldn't
read them and blah blah. Worst human being ever.
Yeah, I was like, yeah things that promote imagination
or Yeah, yeah, it's always something right there's
always some book series that kids like the people
are told not to read It's like, you know what
kids are reading as long as it's not porn She
probably wanted us to read like friggin hamlet
and like your crap. No Sorry, I do not like Shakespeare
Bill's a good guy Duff mother know you wear with
her drapes Yeah, I can never get into Shakespeare
either. I'm not gonna lie. I can pretend and
say I did, but I was always like, really? All
right, I get it. It's more scary than Goosebumps.
It is. The language used because you can never
understand sentences. Yeah. Speaking of Shakespeare,
Spider -Man. Good segue. No, just another...
Quick news story I wanted to touch upon. I just
I thought this was kind of interesting because
I just saw a lot of debate going on over this
and as we're in the mood of secret reboot and
destroy, why not talk about the Spider -Man reboot
number three that's coming out and we got who
is going to be Spider -Man a while ago, but a
few days before we're recording this, he also
announced who hot Aunt May is going to be, and
it's going to be Mercer Tomei. I love how you
put that in there. Who hot Aunt May is going
to be. Mean people don't realize that's that's
her name in this movie. So maybe that's why there's
so much controversy But yes, Marissa Tomei who
a lot of people know from the wrestler my cousin
Vinny She is playing like that title role and
there has been a lot of hubbub about it because
you know She's not necessarily who you picture
as Aunt May. She doesn't have white hair. She's
gorgeous But what do you guys think about her
being cast? Do you think it's it's a bad thing?
You think it's a just them too afraid to hire
an older person or is it? people making a big
deal out of nothing. I think they should really
hire Helen Mirren so we can actually have somebody
that looks age appropriate, but is still hot
because I don't know. I feel like next they're
going to go to a supermodel. Like, oh, here's
Emily Radziakowski. You could be Aunt May. And
Peter's just going to go through puberty this
entire movie trying to spy on you in the shower.
And it's just going to turn into a game of Thrones
is going to turn into porkies. And so we're going
to have a spider ham. And some and yet a base
motel field, too Yeah incest spider -man the
one we've always wanted so incest is best It
really isn't Thank you random person at the bookstore
for giving me that quote from out the rest of
my life Chuck what did you think of Mercer Tomei
being cast as Aunt May? I saw it and I was like
Wait, seriously Whatever at this point, I don't
know. I just I don't really see it to be honest
It doesn't really get me excited. It kind of
gets me a little disappointed if anything But
I mean, we'll see our Peter Parker kind of looks
like he's 12 now so I guess it makes sense to
have a younger looking aunt maybe I don't know
but Yeah, I do realize. Did you guys realize
she she's actually 50 years old? Yeah, she's
50 years old, which is I hope I'm nearly as that
attractive at 50 years old. I know I'm not going
to be. I don't look that good now and I'm 30.
So, Dan, you're going to look better than that
when you're 50. This is funny. I wanted to actually
read some tweets that people wrote about her.
Some of these are actually pretty funny. This
guy at superhero feed says Aunt May is Never
thought I'd say this but Aunt May is kind of
Someone say it for me. Damn it And then the other
guy Jonathan Corman he says I am not okay with
being sexually aroused by Peter Parker's Aunt
May Well, you know who said that didn't happen
in the first movie just yeah, and then there's
a this other guy says Don't worry. It'll only
be for a film or two before they reboot it again
It's pretty much where I'm at cuz I would not
doubt that See like my theory is that this is
just getting us one step closer to that. It may
adventure We all want so yes where she marries
dr. Octopus and Yeah, yeah, she's a crime fighter
and I don't know I I mean it is weird. It's just
the initial idea of it Mr. Tomei as Aunt May
just doesn't necessarily make sense. You look
at Aunt May and you think older I mean even Sally
Field was felt a little young for the role But
I guess in the sense if you think that he is
younger. He's in high school. So maybe if you
Ten years when he's like in prime of being spider
-man. She'd be 60 years old So maybe that would
make a little bit more sense. So I'm not completely
against it. I think ultimately personally when
it comes to casting I get more upset when they
cast someone who's not very talented. And I think
Bruce Tomei is a really great actress. It does
seem like it's part of Hollywood being afraid
of casting someone in a woman world that's not
drop -dead gorgeous, which makes me sad. But
it also just, it just seems like they're just
going younger in every way now with this and
Fantastic Four. It's just, I don't know. I just,
I think their goal is to make us all feel old.
Guys, this just in. I just got an update on Twitter
feed. Uncle Ben will be played by Zac Efron.
See my theory was they just they cast Alan Arkin
as uncle Ben just to screw with people It's like
to go the opposite end of it or like someone
super old Alan Alda I love Alan Alda Ed Reznor,
whatever his name is Ed Asner, yeah, that's what
I was going. Ed Reznor, that's not a person.
You might be. I don't know, he's out there somewhere.
That's Trunk Reznor's grandfather. He'd be great.
You'd be fantastic as Aunt May. Well, see, I
had always, I don't know, just from the comics
and everything, to me, it always seemed like
Aunt May was actually his great aunt. Yeah, that's
what I kind of took to. I felt like she was...
His mom's answers or dad's yeah, like kind of
somebody that would be like, you know his grandparents
sister or something, you know, but yeah, it wasn't
because it never felt like aunt may was his Mom's
sister like never felt like yeah So, I don't
know That is kind of weird. Maybe his mom is
like 22 and had him when she was like Good 12.
They were an episode of mori Jerry springer You
said you're not spider -man the white detective
proves that is a lie Do you guys think that we
won't see her until 2017 or do you think she'll
make an appearance in the Civil War movie? That's
a good question Hmm. The fact that they cast
her now makes me think that she'll at least have
an appearance in Civil War even if it's a brief
one Do you think she'll be in Civil War? I kind
of don't. I mean, your reasoning definitely makes
sense. Like, why would they announce that casting
this soon, like two years ahead of time? But
I don't know. It just makes sense to me to wait
and show her in the actual Spider -Man movie.
But maybe, who knows, maybe they'll show her
in Civil War a little bit. Maybe the after credit
scene or something like that. True. I mean they
are already filming civil war so that could also
I could be wrong I don't know how much time I
have left of filming that movie, but if they
just cast her now maybe she wouldn't be ready
by the time they're rats, but If she is I would
assume it's just a brief brief counter. Maybe
he goes home and she's like in the background
or something like that Stripping what I'm gonna
go see this movie now. Well, just see the wrestler.
Okay She'll be explaining the exact tire tread
on a 1972 Pontiac or whatever she did in my cousin
Vinnie. She's gonna just combine all of her roles
into one for Ant -Man. That's why she got the
part. Alright, well I think enough Spiderman
talk. What we're gonna do right now is take a
quick break and when we come back we're gonna
play one of our favorite games as we break out
sequel, reboot, or destroy. We'll see you in
a bit. It's showtime synergy the latest review
podcast from the geek cast radio network is here
So join TFG one Mike Nicole hailstorm and myself
lady rec as we will be reviewing all 65 episodes
of John the holograms in a 25 episode long podcast
You can find showtime synergy on iTunes and geek
cast radio calm We are the truly outrageous podcast
that you want to be listening to Alrighty and
welcome back and we are playing one of our favorite
games today if you've never heard it before it's
pretty simple what we're gonna do is we're gonna
throw out some sort of property movie TV show
what -have -you and we're gonna decide should
we make a sequel to that property like we talked
about today with Creed being the sequel to Rocky
or reboot like Creed Being a reboot to rocky
or destroy the idea all together and just say
just leave it alone in the franchise should and
make it about the office creates brand Exactly
on the run from the lobby I think Cree Brandon
might be the only person that's older than Stalone
is uncle Ben Time to go with great power comes
with great responsibility like come on man Since
we are getting that rocky sequel, I guess you
would say, or at least spinoff, whatever you
want to call it, I figured what's another great
90s property or 80s property from Stallone? that
maybe could get the same type of treatment. And
that, of course, is Rambo. You know, should Rambo...
Do you think we can get a sequel to Rambo? We
had one like, I think, 10 years ago. And could
we get another one? I mean... How hard is it
to carry an oxygen mask and tank through the
jungle? Is it hard? I don't know. Can you put
like... It would be extreme fire hazard with
all the explosions he has in this movie Maybe
he could have multiple ones and he could put
them on that bow and arrow that he uses You can
have a little chassis He's just stuck on like
one little twig He shoots like exploding arrows
out of the wheels or something But still he can
tie a headband like no one else So should I'm
guessing maybe not a sequel to? Rambo then you
guys are I don't think so. I think you could
go with somebody else I think Jason Statham would
be awesome. I but he'd be awesome in anything.
So Would he fit in the rainbow row I think yeah
Yeah, he said he fits in all the super models.
So if it's in an Audi really well, so the car,
I mean, Chuck, what do you think? I do enjoy
some Rambo, but I think I think that story has
been told. I think it's just after four stories
all this time. Yeah. I mean, I know in the first
one, he says nothing is over. It's just it doesn't
feel like it has that Factor to it that can keep
continuing like kind of rocky does and there's
no real way easy way to pass it down to anyone
else It's not like they ever showed him having
a son or anything that I know of So, I don't
know Maybe they could like continue it in like
animated form because the Rambo 80s Cartoon series
which was so amazing. Maybe you could hunt down
all the Care Bears and Smurfs That I would I
would see But then you find out the Care Bears
are actually ruthless killers and they're impossible
to stop He traps them all in a field and sets
it on fire Well, I mean you got to give some
stone credit, you know Rambo single -handedly
Well allowed us to win vietnam again like vietnam,
too And then rocky won the cold war so maybe
maybe if we have another rambo movie He could
end all these other wars, so exactly It could
it could actually be for the good of mankind
So maybe we should we should allow he does have
a strange like political power about him Although
it's a swartz neighbor He just wants to be president
Yeah, I will say Stallone got a little bit of
help from Top Gun and stopping the Cold War That's
true. That's true. Maybe if him and Tom Cruise
combined into one movie our powers combined Maverick
and Rambo in the same movie like come on and
they bring goose back to life and he's zombie
goose. Oh Spoiler alert, sorry. And everyone
playing volleyball in jeans. No, I got something
better than Zombie Goose. I think he reincarnates
as an actual goose in this movie. You know what?
I would love to see that volleyball scene redone
with Val Kilmer today. Which one's the volleyball?
Know there's a white white ballish looking thing
over there. I don't know I can't really talk.
I don't look much better at this point. So I
don't either but it would be he would look better
than me Did you say you had some um, I did have
a couple These are completely random ones Let's
see This was I guess another sort of 90s franchise
that was Popular in a different media was video
games before game movie, but um, how about the
Mortal Kombat movies? I don't know if you could
do sequel. I think it's maybe it's gone too long
And you think sequel I think of Mortal Kombat
Annihilation, which is legitimately one of the
worst things ever in the history of the world
So unless they for like forgot that movie ever
existed because you know, they killed Johnny
Cage like how can you do that? But I think I
could see possibly a reboot. I know they have
that online TV like that online series It's like
more of the realistic version. That's actually
really good I've not I've not seen it. I think
it's a Mortal Kombat legacy. I want to say I've
yet to I saw like the first like preview that
was leaked or came out and then I never saw it
but So maybe they couldn't make a movie around
that that Alan but I think no Mortal Kombat has
been around for it's still making mutant games
so there there I think Michael J. White was actually
in that uh that YouTube series and The fight
scenes are really good. Actually, like it wasn't
cheaply done at all So there there might be possibility
there for something so I would say I would say
a reboot of anything I want to make a sequel,
but that's my decision Yeah, I wouldn't I wouldn't
necessarily destroy it I think there's Definitely
good storylines to write since they used one
of the bad ones first off And I wouldn't do a
sequel to the the terrible first one, so I would
definitely reboot it and make it proper this
time around. It'd be kind of cool because they've
been like incorporating other characters from
other licensed properties like they had Freddy
Krueger and the Predator is in the most recent
one. If they could somehow get those and that'd
be like this ultimate like monster mashup of
like Scorpion and the Predator. They're doing
the monster mash. Yeah. Predator fits perfect
in that. I would have to go reboot on it as well.
Like I said, they've proved that you can have
a lot of success with the legacy show that they
did on the YouTube series. I think they had like
two seasons of it even or something. And the
few episodes that I watched of it was really,
really good. But I'm sure there's a lot of good
actors out there willing to do it. A lot of action
stars and stuff. So I just want to say one thing
about when I used to play the video game as a
kid, my favorite moment ever. Was when I was
sub -zero and I was fighting Johnny Cage and
he did the split thing and I froze him like that
at the exact moment the Was there anyone that
you would hate more than Johnny Cage I always
hated that character like in a good way like
he just seems really I don't know him in his
$500 sunglasses or whatever they were Yeah To
keep the theme going of the 80s action star movie,
I'm thinking, you know, recently Arnold Schwarzenegger
tried to come out with a Terminator film, Terminator
Genisys. It didn't - wasn't very successful critically
or financially, did not do very well. I have
not seen - Even though Amelia Clarke is gorgeous.
Yeah. Only reason I would go see that is just
to stare at Amelia Clarke. I have heard from
a second -hand source that that movie is very
good. Oh, really? I have not - Very, very good.
I've heard - For most of what I've heard it wasn't,
but again, I can't speak. Well, this is from
a hardcore Terminator fan, so I'm hoping that
says something. Okay, well, there you go. Terminator
didn't work out. Unfortunately, what others?
Like, you don't really have any franchises, I
would say. You know, I don't think we'd go with
Jingle all the way to, or Hercules in New York
to, or maybe Commando again. I don't really like
Commando. Conan? That might be sacrilegious.
Conan though. They are they are making a Conan
sequel so I didn't that uh that is happening
and they've already rebooted it which wasn't
very good in my opinion, but one movie I thought
you know what I could I could possibly see a
sequel or maybe even take this idea and reboot
it with someone else and It's one that he did
it with one is probably the director that got
the most out of him and that was true lies seeing
possibly a sequel to True Lies, a reboot with
the kind of a similar idea with new actors or
maybe not do that and destroy the idea altogether.
What do you guys think? I don't know. I think
you have to get Jamie Lee Curtis out of those
biotic yogurt commercials first to make that
happen. That'd be really hard to do. Yeah, that's
a hard contract to snap. But one good thing about
that would be Eliza Dushku. I think she would
be great in that. I do not think Tom Arnold would
be able to come back. But I don't know how you
would really make a sequel of that. And I don't
think they'd make it as good. As the other one
with new people in it, I don't know. I think
he would just destroy that one. I actually like
that one a lot I do like true. That was a good
time. What do you think Joe? Just to double -check.
I'm pretty sure that's the one with the With
the harrier right where the yeah blades rotate
and the things like hovering yeah, that's where
in like his his wife is Jiminy Curtis like He
mentioned and greg fighting in the limo on the
bridge and everything. Yeah Exactly. Exactly.
That's and his daughter was flopping around on
top of the jet while he was trying to see beautifully
flopping very I should not say that I know she
was like 12 greg like calm down. I know like
at the time Yeah at the time like you were on
the same age, so it's okay, but now it's a little
weird Chuck again what so do you knowing that
now what the movie is would you give it a secret
or reboot or destroy the idea? I can see given
that a reboot I think you know maybe they could
not quite go so over -the -top on the action
I know that was kind of Arnold style back then
but I think it could be interesting I would possibly
go sequel. Maybe you could get electric you screw
to come back and maybe she's the one with the
true lies Maybe she's a secret agent all she
teams up with her dad nice Nice, see what I did
there. It's actually really good damn. I like
that though do you get them you get like that
hard five, which is kind of the same thing, but
I would be maybe an interesting dynamic with
them now. And I would love that if I would say
only do a sequel if James Cameron comes back
because that guy can do sequels. He can he knows
how to use Arnold really well. And I think Arnold
Schwarzenegger needs someone like James Cameron
to kind of bring his career back to what it was
because right now his movies have not been not
been what they once were when he was at his height.
He's have Arnold Schwarzenegger, a giant boat,
and then they go to a strange planet. But that
I'm sure explaining speed to again for some reason
They did that speed to yeah Chuck do you have
any more I do? Okay, here's another we're really
sticking with this time period. Aren't we in
the 80s here? This is it. Well, he's true life
was 90. So at least we got out of yeah, so yeah
80s 90 So I think one of the mortar beds was
in the 90s, right? Yeah So here's another 80s
90s type of time period I think we've talked
about this movie equal times in past episodes
for different reasons, but uh the two The two
movies starring snake plus getting escaped from
New York and escaped from LA I thought of that
one last night when I was thinking about coming
up with stuff for this Do you think Kurt Russell
could reprise the role? Do you think they could
reboot it? I think that would be, I'm going first
Dan, sorry. Go, do it Greg, go. Out of the way.
I would love to see an older, like he was very
grizzled back then. Imagine him like how many
years now into the future. I would just think
that would be amazing and it'd be like escape
from Canada or something, someplace larger, an
entire country instead. Escape from Canada, they're
all really nice to him. Just to smuggle bacon
out of there or something. He's like, I've got
the protein, go! It'd be like a cross between
you know escape from New York and Canadian bacon.
Yeah I Would like to see an older snake fliskin
because he was very grizzled back then so Like
I think you could either do you could do? sequel
or Reboot you could you could definitely see
some other people in there like once again, you
could definitely have Jason Statham in that And
I would watch it So welcome to Jason season podcast
where we try to give you some career advice on
what he's later on will be awarding him a lifetime
achievement Interesting secret we better show
it's funny because you bring this up because
they're talking about making a reboot to Big
trouble little China, which is another Kurt Russell
movie done by get his name. Why am I John Carpenter
as well? So I would say if you're gonna do it
do a sequel and considering how escape from Los
Angeles escape from LA escape from LA ended I'd
be curious to see what that world is like now
like So that'd be yeah, it's a very interesting
world Yeah, so if you're gonna do that, I would
definitely say Make a sequel because I don't
think anyone else could play snake plus skin.
That's not Kurt Russell person. I gotta agree
there I think, I mean, Kurt Russell is one of
my favorite actors. I really like all of his
stuff and I really don't see any role for my
taste anyway, but I would definitely love to
see a sequel to that. I mean, you bring up a
good point about seeing what 25 years later or
30 years later, whatever. Very cool. Very cool.
So I was trying to I'm looking at one that I
have listed in like the 90s and I don't have
one. I just I didn't realize that till now. They're
all in the same time period, but. Hey, I don't
want to be like sony and reboot a movie that's
been only out for like five years. Yeah, well
We've been talking about movies. So i'm gonna
throw out a tv series and it's one again that
was in the 90s and We actually I brought it up
when we did our ultimate tv network. It's one
of the favorite ones I had as a kid and dinosaurs
are really big right now. Jurassic world is making
like a trillion dollars and Maybe dinosaurs will
be back is a big thing So can they in we're seeing
a lot of 1990s TV shows come back full houses
getting a sequel Boy meets world has girl meets
world. What about dinosaurs? Do you see possibly
getting a sequel to that? Ice age, I guess would
be I don't know would be how you would sequel
eyes it but or a reboot of that series or Continuing
it. I don't know. What do you guys think? I actually
rewatched dinosaurs recently and it was not as
good as I remember it being I don't know why
but it just favorite part is The baby dinosaur
with not the mamas and that stuff. I don't know.
I just think I heard that at this point I think
you could kind of I don't think you could sequel
it because of that but maybe Reboot I don't know
It was it was a weird weird niche kind of Show
and I think it was with that time period. I don't
know. I I would destroy it. I think The muppets
are getting a sequel. It's or not a sequel getting
a new series. Yeah tv. Yeah Yeah, did you ever
see the last episode of dinosaurs? Because it's
like, oh, yeah. Uh, yeah, I did see that it is
very depressing Holy, yeah. Well, that's one
way to end the show with completely uttered doom
and gloom. But yeah, Chuck, what do you think?
Let me guess, they ended with the asteroid hitting
the Earth? No, it's like the Ice Age starting
basically and the temperature is like falling.
And it's like a news reporter basically announcing
that the world is basically coming to an end.
And then a giant mammoth crosses the screen and
he's like, Deborah, what are you doing, Deborah?
For a second, I'm like, I don't remember a mammoth.
You think you're waiting for a joke to happen
and it doesn't happen and you're like, oh it's
it's really just gonna end that sad, huh? All
right. Well, yeah So what do you think I I think
I'm gonna have to go with destroy I think just
let it be I I did enjoy it for a little bit as
a kid, but I really don't think I would enjoy
it now and It's it always was like weird to me.
It was like this weird combination of like the
Flintstones and like Roseanne Somehow with dinosaurs,
I guess. Yeah, I don't know. But it's I just
don't think it would hold up like maybe maybe
if there was a new, you know, creative spin on
it, maybe. But I don't know. Just it's not it's
not hitting me right right now. Yeah. And my
worry would be like they would make the dinosaur
CGI. Yeah. It wouldn't be they wouldn't do puppets
because I can imagine like that they were. Difficult
and the puppetry still holds up pretty well.
Everyone I hear that goes back and tries to watch
it It's like yeah, it's not it's not that good.
So, I don't know Maybe it was a kid and they
were dinosaur so I really doesn't hold up because
they have they have it on Netflix I believe and
I watched like an episode or two and I was like
I can't really watch this It's better how it
was in my memories than it is in my watching
It's always better. So with that with that in
mind, I'd go to story as well. So three destroys
for that one. I Have one actually. Oh, yeah Kind
of going with your TV thing, but this one was
also a movie I just was watching this while eating
dinner tonight and I find it amazing that my
Parents actually like this one. But what do you
guys think of Buffy? I have that listed down
too. That's funny I'm not an avid Buffy watcher.
So I've seen a few my wife watches a lot She's
actually watching out like re -watching it now.
So I've got a few episodes I would think if you
do it you have to do like a sequel like I don't
I don't know if you get reboot it with new characters
or anything like that since they're that's such
a cult following And it's not like Sarah Michelle
Geller is doing anything else. So she is still
probably gorgeous though Sarah Michelle Geller
Oh, yeah, nothing against her. I mean, I liked
her and she had that show with Robin Williams
a little while ago. I thought was pretty good.
For whatever reason, she's not currently in a
major TV show or anything like that. So she had
one from the CW a couple of years ago, but it
never worked out. So I would say maybe do a sequel,
but like do a movie, not a series, you know,
maybe like a special or catch up something like
that. Maybe like do what Serenity did for Firefly
or I know it like Buffy ended right, but maybe.
you have like a huge spectacular with like Angel
or whatever. So I'd go with sequel, but with
a movie. Okay. Chuck? To be honest, I really
haven't seen much Buffy at all. I don't have
a whole lot of interest in it, but I think I
kind of agree with Dan. Like those actors are
pretty... ingrained in those roles, like in the
fans eyes, like every time you go to like Comic
Cons and everything, like people flock to those
people. And I know when we went to New York Comic
Con a few years back, I actually went to meet
James Marsters, who is from Smallville, but he's
also on Buffy. He still gets a lot of fans because
of that and everything. And then you have the
guy from Bones. What's his name? Forget his name.
Oh, uh injury and gory. How do you say it's something
be? Boring out us or yeah, it's all an ace I
mean, let's go bone a mayonnaise But I mean they're
all they all look really good still I think they
can do They could do well in a sequel to that.
I think they would probably all have interest
in doing it So I'm gonna also bring back Eliza
Dushku again Yeah, well some of the Jason Statham
Elijah do some podcast Jason Statham making appearance
in it So, what would you go with Greg? I actually
I'm not gonna really say much and just go with
what you guys said because I think you both made
really good points All right Chuck you anymore.
Um, yeah, I could do one more I'll stay away
from some of the bigger franchises because I'm
not sure if we've done them or not, but I think
we may have But I'll do one that I know we haven't
done before. And this recently has become one
of my favorite movies for some odd reason. And
that is the Tron series. Oh, really, really?
Tron and Tron Legacy. Yeah, I've really gotten
into those movies. I don't know why. When did
that happen? Like two weeks ago. Really? It's
a long lasting love for that franchise. I actually
saw Tron Legacy a while ago, probably like a
year or two ago, but I was able to actually find
the original Tron. The entire thing was on YouTube.
So I watched that and while I appreciated the
originality and where it came from, I definitely
like Tron Legacy better. But I was curious to
hear you guys thoughts. Would you go sequel,
reboot or destroy on Tron? No, let me think.
I'm not the biggest Ron fan to be honest with
you So and I know they were they plan on making
a sequel to Tron legacy, but it fell through
my my idea was since like that didn't work and
I know like I see I mean Wasn't at least as financially
successful as they were hoping for that maybe
I would I would think that maybe there's not
much more there I know they had a cartoon series
that was going pretty strong, but that that that
kind of fell through as well, so Uh, I don't
know. I'd probably go destroy thinking since
it's currently they're having trouble making
it as as we speak So it just seems for whatever
reason. Yeah, that's kind of why I wanted to
bring it up because I know they they cancelled
out on doing the third one, but Yeah What do
you think? Um, yeah, I I like you like you. I'm
not the the biggest uh tron fan Um fools all
of you. Yeah, thank you. Um Are there any tron
fans out there? Yeah, Tron guy. Oh, you got to
hang out with Chuck is Tron guy He's like one
of the first YouTube stars built like a Tron
suit and everything. He's yeah He's a very large
man that should not be in a suit like that. I
must find this man. I find the aesthetic of that
world to be beautiful, but I don't know it just
The the storyline is a bit I don't know. It bit
much. I think what killed it was like, yeah,
it was like the Matrix, right? Because it kind
of took what Tron did and the idea. Yeah, made
it in a year, I think. I won't say stole the
idea, but I think it took a lot of its luster
away. So maybe that's why Legacy wasn't as popular
as people hoped it would be. See, I'm able to
separate them. Like, to me, I'm not a Matrix
fan at all. That movie just is a total turn off
for me. But well, like everybody else, I think
that the first one was really, really good. And
then they just crapped the bed on the last two.
Yeah. What would you say for Tron? I would definitely
say sequel. I really, really, really liked Tron
Legacy a lot. I like the whole concept of it.
Like, I like that going into the game and, you
know, these other. like constructs basically,
they're basically like programs, like they're
not real people, they're programs, but they find
a way to give them like character and give them
personality and everything. And it was just something
that really intrigued me. And I kind of related
it to Wreck -It Ralph, believe it or not. Yeah,
that's a good idea. Because, you know, you're
kind of taking these two -dimensional characters
or things even, they're not even characters,
and you're giving them life, you're giving them
like purpose and... you know direction and everything
and i think it's really interesting how they
did that but basically like the light cycle is
the coolest freaking thing ever to me like i
just i just want a light cycle to drive around
and i could cut people off on the interstate
and just de -res them i gotta admit that is a
good sequence i do like that sequence in in legacy
what what do you think about because i feel like
even watching legacy there was kind of a cool
world they built like there is Interesting like
aspects to it and you know, they've built there
like a little bit of a lore there And I'm sure
there's been Tron comics. I know there's a TV
cartoon What do you think about maybe doing like
a Tron TV series? Would you be up for that? I
would but I think the graphics are a big thing
for me Like especially with the light cycles
and everything like everything else would be
fairly easy to do You know the fight scenes aren't
that spectacular? As far as needing special effects,
but I mean but look at stuff like the flash I
mean they do a great job with their effects I
think so and a different thing it would be possible.
I would be up for that. Definitely I guess it
doesn't have to have this like it wouldn't have
to have Jeff Bridges or I don't know the other
guy's name the younger guy Charlie Hanum, is
that what was that? I forget. Was that him? He
has to have Olivia Wilde though. No it wasn't
Charlie Hanum. Yeah Olivia Wilde was in it too.
Olivia Newton wild Yeah, I guess I guess it wouldn't
necessarily have to have those characters I would
like to see them back, but I would still watch
it if it wasn't them Yeah, I think it'd be good
if they just if they bring Jeff Bridges back
it would only be old Jeff Bridges. I think that's
the one that they kind of turned me off was just
the the younger looking Jeff Bridges just it
didn't look kind of weird and just didn't work
completely. It did but I know like I understand
why they like he's just a like a copy like a
program or whatever. Yeah. As long as they made
a reference to Flynn you know I would probably
be happy. All righty, so that's it for this week
for sequel reboot in this story But before we
go we do have a letter and again We are blessed
by having a fan write in a letter and of course
we had a couple other emails for questions We
didn't get to them today, but you know what we
may do like our mailbox episode coming up So
if you have questions or anything you know anything
you want to ask could be about Whatever have
you but this game whatever you know any topics
you feel like we don't cover you wanted to talk
about Go ahead and send us an email to Talking
in circles at live .com or feedback at ecastradio
.com, but today I have to definitely We all have
to send out a huge. Thank you to Reggie Williams
who sent a letter and it's like yes. Thank you
Reggie and it's actually pretty timely because
it is regarding San Diego Comic -Con and I will
I will go ahead and read it for you. So here
it goes If you have any affinity for comic books
that runs more than two inches deep, Comic Con
International San Diego is set up to support
you. Why? The old saying absolutely applies here.
It's not about the comics anymore. Comics fandom
is largely an affinity based pastime. You go
to Comic Con largely because you dig comics.
You feel part of something. You feel like you
have some skin in the game. Now let's pretend
you're going to GreedoCon. As a Breedocon aficionado,
Breedocon should focus on burritos, dig? Tacos
are fine as well, and hell, if you have to do
it, you can even accept other food products such
as pizza. But suddenly, when there is a panel
on Ford Mustang, you rebel. Things are out of
place. This shouldn't be. The carpet -bagger
effect just hit, and the safety of your burrito
is at stake. These are the base opportunities
with their Mustangs, exploiting you and your
burrito buddies, tempting you with something
shiny. The Carp Riders just don't get it. They
don't understand what burritos are about, and
they'll never love them like you do. And look,
everyone's gravitating to whatever's shiny. Your
burrito has just been reduced. San Diego gives
itself a wonderful aesthetic clause. Just look
at the banners hanging from the street lights
all around town, and they'll tell you that Comic
-Con is celebrating the popular arts, but the
name has become disconnected from its origin
and from the reality of what it represents today.
Is it a Comic -Con? North America's biggest pop
culture expo seems more appropriate and accurate
description. In this, San Diego sits at a paradox.
They have more comics than anyone, yet comics
are somehow subdued and pushed to the side. With
Marvel seeing that they're sitting at a Comic
-Con, we may see San Diego Comic -Con return
to its original roots. Some look at this as a
good thing. Now San Diego won't become glorified
Hollywood hype machine. Why, I get this mindset.
Personally, I enjoy being a part of the hype
machine. Sitting in Hall H as a long -awaited
and unexpected trailer hits, causing the crowd
to act like we're at this World Series, the World
Cup, and the Super Bowl combined. Soon I can
see people talking fondly about the days when
Comic -Con mattered and just wasn't a bunch of
people looking through an assortment of long
boxes. And that is it. So it seems like from
what I'm reading here that Reggie was indicating
why he understands people have issues with Comic
-Con being more about pop culture than Comics,
but it seems like he is in favor it being that
way because it makes it matter. And so I think
that's an interesting Angle to take with it.
I don't know what you I know Greg you as someone
who's been to San Diego comic -con I know you
really haven't gone to the panels all that much
but I don't know what you think of things like
what's Marvel sitting out of comic -con you feel
like it's going to Change comic -con for the
better or the worst last year that I did go which
was actually last year There were a lot of big
movies that were coming out that didn't involve
themselves in the con and I really didn't feel
the there was so much other stuff going on that
I really didn't make a huge hit. To me, if you're
just watching it from the outside, something
like Marvel movies not being there is kind of
a big deal. But if you're actually going to the
thing, your focus is so spread out to... to try
and get everything done that you want to do.
There's already so much stuff that you going
on that I don't think you even notice something
like just one thing like Marvel. Now if it starts
to kind of like a cascade effect where like next
year there's not like Marvel DC and like. Like
a whole bunch other different movie stuff coming
out then I think you see it going back to kind
of an older feel of Comic -con where it's just
about the comics for the most part and maybe
TV but I think that Makes it even better and
makes people feel like they can get more done
at it. I guess I would say As someone who's never
been there, I really can't speak to it but Think
that I think what we're seeing is a lot of Hollywood
is seeing that there's not much kickback to Spending
a lot of money at comic -con like there's been
a lot of movies that have been huge you know
everything from like Scott Pilgrim vs. The world
which spent all this money there and then nothing
really came of it and I think people thought
they saw like 300 when that came out He thought
oh, it's because they went to comic -con and
it's never really come to that point again So
I could see it kind of returning back to the
roots like Reggie was saying and maybe not as
much of the hype machine. I think it's always
going to be that somewhat though. I think it's
I think it's never going to be able to escape
that totally because people are going to look
at it as free marketing opportunity. But I don't
know. Do you have any thoughts on the subject
at all, Chuck? Yeah, I mean, I personally I think
like I tend to like the smaller cons that are
more catered towards the creators like the Baltimore
Comic Con, which I know we all love. But I think
the big ones like San Diego and New York, I think
the industry needs those though, because to be
honest with how big they've gotten just say in
the last like five to seven years, I really think
that they're that's helped to drive a lot of
things that have happened in the comic industry.
I mean, I don't have official statistics or anything,
but I would think, you know, comics are becoming
more popular. Probably a lot more graphic novels
are being sold. As you know, these movies come
out, people like to look them up in the comics
and read about them. I think it's like a gateway.
It's bringing more people in. I think it's it's
it's sort of like the, you know, the rising tide
raises all ships. So, like, I think it's really
helping the comic industry. Now, you could get
into the argument of quality of the stories,
but that's another whole different thing. But
I think as a whole, it's definitely helping it.
And you can kind of pick and choose which type
of con you would rather go to. I know they're
all getting bigger. And actually, New York last
year had more attendees than San Diego. So technically,
according to last year's numbers, New York could
lay claim that they're the world's largest comic
con. Yeah, I mean, I think that's definitely
a good point, too. I mean, you think about it,
Marvel was declaring bankruptcy not too long
ago, and it's with these movies, and it's allowed
them to be what they are now. I don't know if
more comics have been sold or not. I definitely
think they're certainly more popular in the lexicon
of everything. and that could be possibly why
you're seeing more things like a new 52 or mobile
we're doing what it's doing because it's trying
to capture those fans who are now interested
in the product there the issue i think a lot
of people have like as i think he was alluding
to in his email was when you have those things
that are outside of the realm of geekdom and
just try to make it about them or try to kind
of uh Use that popularity for their own gain,
even though they don't really felt fall in that
rain all that much I don't know how prevalent
that is I know like like WWE has stuff at comic
-con and maybe people would think that's not
really geeky But I think in some ways it is so
and they're like racing bad That's necessarily
geeky and that had like a thing at comic -con
So there are certainly a rideway range of things
that that go there, but I don't think that's
a bad thing. I think I think most geek geeks
are into a variety of things. So I think that
just it's just more of a testament of showing
that there's no such thing geeks are not Shouldn't
be pigeonholed into like you have to speak. I
think those those uh, you know other genres sort
of leaking into comic cons. I think they've sort
of spawned other like new comics like You know
new companies and new comics like getting into
that medium And they've sort of inspired people
to create new characters. And I think like everything
coming together, I think really is affecting
everything and bringing everything up. Because
we've seen a lot of I mean, to be honest, we've
seen a lot of new comic book concepts in the
last like 10 years or whatever. Like like, you
know, everyone thought of comics as superhero
comics, like for decades. And now there's like,
there's so much more that's come out just recently.
I mean, image comes out with like three new cities
every week. That's very true. And all of them
are usually really good. So, yeah, who's to blame
them? All right. I mean, I definitely think there's
more we can even touch upon with the topic even
on a later episode. But I'd be curious to hear
what people think of San Diego Comic Con this
year. I know I haven't really heard a lot of
news, big news so far. I'm very sad that I can't
be there to get all the pop final like Very sad
about that you bought enough. They should like
send you with like three copies to like a beta
tester Please tell them that Chuck This should
make Greg Greg Brepler exclusive pop they have
Conan O 'Brien ones for the comic -con Alrighty,
so let's bring this episode to a close. And if
you do want to send us an email, like I mentioned,
you can send us it to TalkingInCircles at live
.com. We're also on Facebook and Twitter. Just
search TalkingInCircles DCRN. We're also on Twitter.
Guys, what are your Twitter names? I am at HerilicAgeChuck.
I am at TheCreatePorge. And I am at MovieRevolt.
But that'll be it for this week. We'll be back
next week, same time. Same channel, same podcast,
but for now. This has been Chuck. This has been
Greg, or Old Sylvester Stallone. What's going
on with Descendants? I won't destroy that. And
this has been Dan, and we've been talking in
circles. We'll see you next time. Crisp, baby.
Yeah, I can't even do it. Ah! I remember those
commercials. Not that it's over, just give me
something to drink. They're like the celebrity
deathmatch, like claymation people. Oh, I love
that. I wish they would do that. We should have
secret reboot and destroy a slow way deathmatch.
Or just claymation. You should secret it, but
destroying it would be so much fun. That was
the whole point of the show. Especially with
today's celebrities Celebrity Deathmatch episode
