About this Episode

The hosts dive into a collection of interesting trivia and facts they've discovered, covering everything from George Lucas and Steve Jobs, to Pope Francis's unexpected past as a nightclub bouncer, to the origins of Comic Sans font in the Watchmen comic. They also discuss the cafeteria scene from Spider-Man (2002) that was performed practically by Tobey Maguire, the cost of being Batman in real life, and Deadpool #27 holding the Guinness World Record for most characters on a comic book cover. Plus, Dan reviews The Valiant mini-series and Chuck shares his thoughts on the animated film Wreck-It Ralph.

Hi, this is Kyle Higgins and you're listening

to the Geek Patch Radio Network. You are now

on the inside of what I like to call the circle

of trust. We are all connected in a great circle

of life. You know something Bert? What? I think

you and I are going in circles. It feels like

we're going in circles. And this is Dan, and

we are Talking in Circles brought to you by the

GeekCast Radio Network. The podcast that's all

new, all different, but actually kind of exactly

the same. Today we are going to be doing we're

gonna be learning we're gonna put our educational

hats on and kind of Talking about what we learned

today after we as we go over some really fun

and interesting facts at least, you know It's

fun fact Tuesday, I guess if this is you're releasing

listening to this when this is released But we'll

get to that later on but before we get boring

episode guys. It's an educational one boring

You're not supposed to tell this boring till

the end of the episode Unless this is like the

Magic School Bus, then it's gonna be really awesome.

Well, or Magic School Bus, or Bill Nye, which

is now on Netflix, by the way, which is - Yes,

I watched that! It's pretty awesome. It's not

as fun when you're old, though. The sad thing

is, I'm like, I'm learning things, and I feel

like I shouldn't, because I watched this when

I was a kid, but yeah, I'm still learning some

things, so... Oddly, I did not think we'd get

into Bill 9 tangent, but that's not always a

good thing, you know? I feel like we should all

be wearing bow ties or something. Before we get

to all the fun of later today, you know, the

educational fun, I should say. How's the week

been going for you guys? Pretty boring. Not too

much happened, except today, right after I got

out of work, ran into two total morons on motorcycles.

Nice. There's a lot of those out in the summer.

There really are, you know, and it's really aggravating

because like, I know people are overly sensitive

about that. They're like, oh, watch out for motorcycles.

But I feel like a pretty big percentage of them

drive total douchebags compared to, don't get

me wrong, there's a lot of car drivers that are

idiots too. But it's just like, you see a motorcycle

and you're kind of like, okay, what's he going

to do? He's going to weave in between us and

everything. But I was sitting at this red light

and this guy was next to me in the left lane.

These cars are pulling out of the other leg of

the intersection. They were going by and everything

was fine except the last truck that went through

the intersection apparently knew the guy in the

motorcycle. Yeah, and he was like flipping him

off, you know, and he probably like just joking

around, but he's like flipping him off. He's

like, yeah. So like the art or our students green

and the guy next to me like guns it flies out

in front of me and tries to get over. Well, right

at that point, there was a car pulling out of

the McDonald's there and he like almost like

hit almost slammed right into him. He had to

like swerve back over. I'm like, yep, that's

why you don't go fast and try to come out of

a red light, like a freaking starting line of

a race. Yeah. I remember one time I was driving

like on a major highway. It was really busy and

it was like a motorcycle was coming up. It was

like a group of them and. The guy like we're

like going 65 65 miles per hour if not faster

and he was driving and suddenly he like I guess

he decided like I want to be a stunt driver and

act like this was a movie. He gets on top of

his motorcycle like driving like riding it like

a surfboard and like I'm like going like 60 foot

like what in a busy highway So if he crashes

not only he's gonna kill himself. He's probably

gonna hurt a lot of people that are driving near

him Yeah, doing all these different like stupid

stunts like wheelies and stuff like that, which

is like yeah You want to do that stuff fine,

but no one other people are on the road I mean,

I feel like I'm probably really old here, but

I'm like Jesus Christ, you're like seriously

and and then um, it was gonna go from an action

movie to all douchebags go to heaven Yeah, yeah,

it's like a deep to like a driver's end video

really quickly uh, it's funny and then I actually

Ended up going to the mall and they were parked

there, too I kind of wanted to say go up and

say something but I didn't because i'm a pussy

so I didn't do anything Plus there's probably

like 20 of them. Yeah. I was just like, I just

don't understand that mindset at all. Yeah. All

right. Okay. You're, you want to do, you want

to be in my saga today. This happens in like

literally no more than 200 yards down the road.

I get on the on -ramp to get on the highway.

And I look at my mirror, there's another guy

behind me in a different motorcycle. And, uh,

I'm like, all right, what's the city going to

do? Cause I know he's going to do something.

So I'm coming down to merge like onto. there's

it's weird like area there's like two merge points

so i come to the first point where i have to

merge and he's like right on my tail and he's

like getting over i'm like he's trying to go

around me so he just like completely cuts me

off goes through like the gore area and just

flies by me like i probably would have hit him

if i wasn't paying attention because i was moving

over as well freaking i laid on the horn like

for like five minutes at him. He didn't even

phase them like he didn't even care. And so we

ended up going down and there's like a second

merge point where he had to merge onto the main

highway. And he ended up ahead of me and there

was cars there so he couldn't get over. But I

was back far enough where I had a gap. So I got

over. two lanes and ended up getting ahead of

him. I was laughing my ass off. I love that.

And then he was passing people on a ramp lane,

like he was going around them on the right side

and stuff. He's just driving like a complete

lunatic. He's going to end up killing himself.

That's a good thing about having a good horn

like if I have the one like the horn that's on

the side So it's like clicking a button. It doesn't

feel the same. Yeah, it's like it's like this

I feel like a loser trying to like lay on the

horn right with my thumb It's like it's like

you're beeping the horn in a video exactly And

my my horn's pretty sad. It's pretty sad. It's

nice. We'll get like one of those clown horns

It's like, you know, not intimidating at all

for anything. It'll cause a laugh. So We'll put

you the Dixie horn on. I wish they didn't have

different horns because sometimes it's like you're

just behind a car that like didn't see the light

turn green and you just want to like let them

know but you know all the horns sound the same

so it's like I kind of don't want to be a dick

here so if I could just lightly tap on it and

like you know just be like you know or like the

the hay One like horn like this is a horn means

I mean hello not the people, you know I'm just

saying we need to differentiate differentiate

our horns. That's a that's a problem that we're

not addressing I didn't hear one presidential

candidate talk about that You can get you can

get some online There are some you can install.

That does not surprise me. I want, I wanted to

install a freaking air horn from a semi truck

on mine. Just blast people, scare the crap out

of them. That's a lot of power. That's a lot

of power. Greg, how's things going with you?

Um, all right. Pretty boring. Recently at work,

since I'm so bored at work, I've, I've taken

to Photoshopping people's heads on different

things. Yeah, the one girl I photoshopped onto

a photo of Mystique from X -Men First Class.

It was at work, so I went with the one where

she has the flight suit on, not to offend her

that she would be kind of naked. But she wasn't

like, why did you photoshop me onto a mutant?

She asked, why did you photo shot me onto an

alien? I thought that movie was pretty popular.

I don't know what the hell happened. And then

another girl, I photo shopped her eyes slightly

larger and I photo shopped her onto all the Teletubbies.

That is a scary thought. I'm sure that went over

well. She thought it was kind of funny. And then

I also photo shopped her face on the baby son

that's usually behind them. and then my brother's

birthday was coming up and so I I did a nice

one of him, I did. I found this picture of Iron

Man and I brought that one up in Photoshop and

I already had a picture of my brother and I Photoshopped

him to be Tony Stark in the Iron Man outfit.

And don't tell him, but I got a frame and I'm

gonna get a mat and I've sanded down the frame

and I'm gonna spray paint it a nice red, put

a couple layers of clear on it. So it's got some

nice depth to it and then I'm going to put a

gold matte and then I was going to frame it for

him. So that's pretty cool on that side. And

then today I started photoshopping. the employees

of the studio I work at onto the Avengers. But

the only thing that sucks is there's way more

women than men at my work. And there's way more

men in the Avengers than there are women. So

it was kind of kind of coming out lopsided because

I had like Thor, Hawkeye and Quicksilver left

on there. And I'm like, OK, I'm out of guys to

Photoshop and I'm not about to Photoshop the

women onto. the dudes except for maybe if I did

Thor and then kind of Inflated the chest a little

bit. Maybe it would be like female Thor, but

I wasn't gonna go with that Yeah, maybe but I

I put my My boss's dad is Iron Man. I put my

boss as the Hulk has he said? Oh, I want to be

Hulk so I that one looks pretty sweet and I Photoshopped

myself as Captain America Nice, of course, of

course. I'm surprised you didn't get with Black

Widow. You're like, I'll photoshop as Black Widow.

No, I photoshopped this one girl as Black Widow.

And my boss is like, she looks good as a redhead.

And she does not agree with that at all. Ew,

I look disgusting. And I'm like, okay. Just like

that. Just like that. Mm -hmm. So, you know,

my week's going well. I was kind of a big hero

this week. I don't want to brag. Me your hero,

baby! I was waiting for a call from the news.

So I get a text from my wife saying, like, I

wish you were home right now. I'm like, wait,

what's going on? She's like, there's kind of

a, like, we have a spider emergency. I'm like...

What? How do we have a spider emergency? It's

like, there's a big spider in the kitchen. I'm

like, and she hates spiders. So I'm like, I'm

sorry. Like, I can't call off work. So what she

ends up doing. First she sends me a photo of

the spider to verify that it's a spider And like

I get it and like, you know, it's on the floor.

It looks like a spider. It looks decently size

It's not like a tarantula or anything or like

something from like a one of those science fiction

movies So I'm like, okay, and I'm like, I don't

know what you can just kill it But I don't know

why she didn't want to kill it So instead she

her her method is trapping it for me to kill

later. So she gets like gigantic bowl it's like

a clear bowl then covers the spider in it so

she captures it in this like in this clear bowl

and takes a photo of it and sends that to me

as well saying basically this is my mission when

I get home you know I have to I have to get prepared

for this killing this gigantic spider. Should

you choose to accept it? Exactly. Please stop

questioning your spider about your whereabouts

today. Exactly I'm like do I need to like research

to see if there's secret weaknesses or some sort

of potion I need? Spider is pretty enormous and

a lot of legwork going into it, but I get home

I'm going over to it and it's funny too because

like we had someone like she had someone stopping

by and visiting She's like, oh no. No, I have

to kill it because I can't leave it here But

then she ends up leaving it there because I guess

you know, but anyways, so I get spider I get

home and I'm looking at it. I'm like this This

is a cricket. It's not even it's not even a spider

so I I did the humane thing and since it was

already kind of captured in this thing like I

uh I get you know, did the classic get the piece

of paper and put it underneath and then Go outside

and free it and so I didn't have to kill it But

then later that night, I don't know if it's the

same one But I see one just like it and it's

back in my house i'm like I gave you a shot and

then you failed So now you're dying and I killed

it and I left it there because i'm like I want

your other friends to see what happens when they

come in our house So leaving you as a message

and i'll clean you up later. So that was you

have such a lovely home exactly You should have

like He should have pulled one of his legs off

when his buddy came out to help him get them

both. Some malicious spidering, yeah. I call

myself the spider hunter is what I'm going with.

Spider whisper? Still better than dog the bounty

hunter. Where is he? Man, that's a hero and a

half. But Chuck. His wife's a pretty big hero.

But Chuck, I know last week we talked about all

the movies you bought. I'm curious if you were

able to actually catch up with those, because

I don't know if you're like me. I buy a movie

and then maybe three years down the line, I actually

stop and watch it. I don't know if you have a

quicker turnaround than I do or how the situation

goes. Well, usually I do, but this week I did

not watch any of the ones that I bought. Nice.

Good job. I have to keep the status quo. No,

I had my one co -worker lend me another one.

The same guy that lent me the Big Hero 6 movie

thought I would like another one. It was another

animated movie. What? Frozen. No. Let it go,

Crick. Let it go. This was actually Wreck -It

Ralph. Interesting. Yeah. So I'm expanding my

horizons here. I'm getting into some animated

movies because I'm a little lacking in that area,

I guess. Well, you watch a lot of animated movies,

a lot of Avengers. There's a lot of animation

in there. The DC ones, so much like all of them.

It's good. Big Hero is a good gateway drug because

it is comic book, but not necessarily. And then

Wreck -It Ralph is a video game. Classic video

games. Yeah. Well, I lied last week. I did see...

I have seen a couple of the Ice Age movies. Yeah.

I can see why that would make you not want to

watch this. No, actually, I love the Ice Age

movies. Oh, really? I just know you hate Ray

Romano's voice, so I'm surprised. That was kind

of annoying, but I like the parts where, like,

giant rocks fell on his head and stuff. No, for

some reason, I liked the couple of Ice Age movies

that I saw, but... So, my... Friend at work thought

I would like Wreck -It Ralph and I did. I liked

it a lot. I actually liked it a lot better than

Big Hero 6 even. I don't know. I'm not really

sure what it was about it. I guess the story,

like the creativity of it. I just thought it

was really cool how they built this whole world

like of all these arcade games. And like, you

know, at night time they can travel into other

games and stuff and they go through the power

cords like where they're plugged in and there's

like a, you know, power strip on the floor like

that all the machines were you plugged into and

that was sort of a Grand Central Station and

like the Each game had like a gateway like a

gate that you would go through and it was actually

that was the third prong on the electrical plug

and like it was cool because like I didn't notice

that at first but in the one scene they show

like up above like the two like flat prongs,

like pulling out. Yeah. And then and then you

can see like the big like gateway one underneath.

That's like the third prong, like the ground

line. And that's the tunnel they like travel

through to go in other games and stuff. I thought

it was like really, really creative. And I could

definitely see like kids getting into that because

like, you know, visually, it makes sense. It's

like, oh, yeah, you know, like little miniature

like characters traveling through these cords.

But I thought it was really well done. even like

I enjoyed how they could like look out the screen,

like they could see outside the game, like into

the arcade. Like I thought that was a pretty

cool concept too. And like Ralph talking about

how he could like see, you know, he could see

out the glass and into the other games and stuff.

But I mean, I really liked the voice acting.

I thought John C. Reilly was perfect for Wreck

-It Ralph. He did a great job because he's like

goofy to begin with, you know, and he just like

fit that character perfectly. I like Sarah Silverman.

She was pretty good. Yeah, I'm like, I can't

believe she actually like played this wholesome

character in it was perfect Yeah, and she made

it through the whole thing without saying something

disgusting Yeah, probably like after like every

five minutes you had it you like kind of just

you know, cleanse the cleanse But yeah, I really

enjoyed it. I don't know it was Who else was

in it? Jane Lynch was... I think Calhoun was

the name of the character. Yeah. It's interesting

because the idea of arcades and how they've kind

of gone away, but it's kind of cool. It's certainly

nostalgic. Did you ever go to arcades going up

at all? Not really. I mean, a couple. I know

actually some of the memories I have are going

to the Pizza Hut near my house when I was growing

up. Nice. I know we remember like the book it

program. We, you know, you would take your pin

and everything, but they had, I remember when

you get a reward kids with food and pizza, like,

come on, like recent pizza. So congratulations.

You read a book, buy a pizza or get a pizza for

free. I mean, like why that program ever stopped.

I will never understand. I know it was like the

best gig going, but my pizza had had a couple

of arcade games in it. And one was the old X

-Men game. And you remember like, you know, Pizza

Hut like promoted X -Men heavily in the 90s.

They had all those like, you know, exclusive

stuff that they released and everything. So I

remember playing that game a lot. I remember

getting like a comic from them too. And like,

I think I like somewhat like they had that kids

club when I got like the X -Men cup with all

the X -Men on it. Yeah. By doing that I became

an x -man fan and then led to this podcast eventually

so Like you see what happens when you were working

with food good things podcasting. We know it

all the pizza Are you are you a fan of uh record

ralph greg? Never seen it. Really? Oh, you would

love it greg So you you play your games more

than when more than chuck and I so I assume you

probably would enjoy it more than us Uh, yeah,

I I think I would enjoy it, but I just Never

had the real opportunity to see it Yeah. I don't

think it's like streaming any place because like

the thing about like a Disney movie is that,

you know, it's like they're always so hard to

get to and their movies are so freaking expensive.

They got a waveform to come out of the vault.

Exactly. Yeah, I thought it was another part

I thought the crew was creative too because they

have like this meeting called Bad Anon where

like all the bad guys would meet like every night.

It was like a therapy session. That was pretty

good. That was hilarious, like how they had a

couple of, like, street fighter guys like M.

Bison and Zangief and stuff. Which I'm like,

I don't know if I consider Zangief a villain,

but I guess, you know, maybe. Yeah, I don't know.

I never really got that, but I guess... He is

Russian and he's big, so I guess I understand

it. I can see why he would be conflicted eternally

and emotionally about, like, where he stands

on being a villain. Yeah, I loved his line, too,

where, you know, they were going around the room

and he's like, I am Zangief. I am bad guy. But

that does not make me bad guy. That was pretty

funny. Craig, you would seriously like that movie,

I think. Okay. You just have to find it eventually

somewhere. Yeah. It's not streaming or anything

and I don't own it. We'll bootleg it. I mean,

we'll buy it. We will purchase it legally, yeah.

Knock, knock, knock. Hello, this is the FBI.

We will purchase the shit out of that. One thing

I got to do too, I read a comic, a mini -series,

and it was actually based upon a company that

I never read any of their comics before, but

I actually have wanted to since Baltimore Comic

Con last year, and it's the comics from the Valiant

Entertainment. I don't know if you guys have

read any of their comics ever. No, but they have

like Bloodshot, I believe is their big one. Yeah,

he's one and there's there's a few and the actually

the miniseries I picked up was called the Valiant

and it was this like as someone who's coming

into this universe brand new I'm not sure if

the like the character was based off is one that

exists or if it's just for this miniseries but

it kind of involves all the different characters

from all the different different series which

is kind of funny because I remember when I was

talking to the Valiant people at Baltimore Comic

Con their biggest like selling point was like

yeah we don't really do crossover or our big

focus is just on our characters and letting them

develop in their own world like they share a

universe but they don't have to pop in each other's

books because we want we want to focus on our

actual characters instead of just trying to win

points with cheap crossovers and then of course

this comes out so it's kind of funny but not

that that's a bad thing humorous how things change

basically like the premise of it there's this

Quote -unquote internal warrior who has protected

the earth for like 3 ,000 years from this kind

of like seedy monster who Appears and his like

job is to fight him off and this monster is trying

to kill these people called the Geomancers who

speak to the earth like these like mythical beings

they're kind of like maybe you can equate them

to like the Stephen Strange of their universe

like You know, they have some magical powers

and things like that and the the idea is every

every so often this beast appears and tries to

kill it. Warrior's job to stop that from happening,

but he's failed every single time throughout

history. Every time it's happened, he's come

up with better and better plans, and it's just

led to failure each time. And finally now it's

present day and it's happening again. But the

difference time the difference this time is now

like with him He has different characters from

the valiant universe happening. Like you mentioned

Greg one of them being bloodshot and Like to

me it felt like actually a great intro to this

world because it's like the cliff notes version

of how everything goes on kind of giving a little

bit of it all these different characters and

Finding out a little bit more of them and for

me the like walking away from this like the quality

of it You know if it's good or bad the one thing

I can definitely say is like I got super interested

in reading bloodshot comics because that character

was really intriguing he's like imagine kind

of like the framework of terminator because he

has elements of that are like a kind of android

-like With the healing factor of Wolverine if

not even like more in hands and then kind of

like a demeanor of the Punisher He has like all

these kind of put together in his own unique

qualities as well. So he was a really great character

and I found myself like I really want to I want

to like go back and learn more about him So I

actually might pick up some some comics about

him So I got at least one good takeaway and lucky

that the comic book itself was quite good I don't

like have much to say about it, but the plot

was rather straightforward It's just you know,

there's this monster and we have to try to stop

it and it you know gets into the eternal warrior

and and what's kind of intriguing about this

monster is that it looks different to each person

and the idea it's supposed to whatever your worst

fear is, whatever that may be. So that's in the

title please. There are a lot of cool little

different story developments. And like I said,

as being someone who knows nothing about these

characters gives me great insight to these characters

almost immediately by knowing whatever that great

fear might be. So, and like I kind of enjoy just

the simplicity of the plot where it's just like.

point a to point b which is kind of like the

exact opposite of the secret wars going on in

marvel right now which is really dense and really

complicated i've liked it so far i've read the

first two issues but there's just a lot going

on and it is complicated it doesn't feel like

you need like a diagram to completely understand

everything and this it's like we need to stop

monster monster bad and that's it which is kind

of refreshing it feels kind of nice it's just

like this is basic and it's only four issues

and there's no there's no uh side issues there's

no anything like that i guess there is a valiant

like summer event coming out Well, I haven't

really meant much about it But this itself is

this a four -issue miniseries quite good You

may want to pick it up if you know if you can

find it ten bucks or so I would say pick it up

I thought it was I enjoyed it and I You know,

it's I think it's a good thing that it has me

excited to read more comics from this from these

creators. So It's enjoyable. So I'm trying to

branch out outside of the Marvel DC even image

at this point. And so I've been reading that

I just started chrononauts, which the first issue

was quite good So looking forward to that. Yes,

great. That is no problem. I really enjoy that

series Yeah, so I also got out the first two

issues of big man plans plan on reading that

so that is really good as well Yeah, so I will

I will be talking about that later Possibly so

we have anything anything else you want to bring

up at all or? Have done nothing this week. I

am sorry, you know You got a lot of Photoshop

and done, you know Very cool. Oh I guess the

only thing I could really touch upon real quick

was just long wire. I started I started watching

It's a TV show. It's I don't know what neck works

on I've been watching it on aim and see don't

have the much to say about it But like the way

I would describe it is it's like justified for

your parents It might sound kind of like bad,

but it's very it's just like takes place in Wyoming.

There's this sheriff's older sheriff He's got

up there, you know, he's I would say pushing

60 50 ish His wife just died within the past

year. It kind of just goes to his story and like

within that time He's went off the deep end and

wasn't showing up to work And now he's kind of

trying to get his life back together and in that

time It seems like his town's kind of gone to

hell. So it's kind of that redemption story Relationship

with him and his daughter and it's pretty good

only thing I dislike about it. I'm not a big

fan of like the episode Episodical TV where it's

like, you know monster of the week or story of

the week. It's okay It's it's kind of good now

because it's like sometimes with everything going

on It's just good to have something simple and

just quick to listen watch and we can you not

think about but I'm hoping it gets beyond that

because it does get it to me I that can only

hold my attention for so far like I don't like

the idea knowing that The conflict that you're

starting is gonna be ending in 30 minutes or

40 minutes or so and it's just I don't know it's

just a mental thing for me I can enjoy it here

and there like I can watching myself a good Law

and Order episode if I need to but eventually

like I want something a little bit more but I

don't know anything else before we take a quick

break alrighty so guess what you're gonna be

doing you're going to be learning a lot. So you're

welcome ahead of time. And what we're going to

do is take a quick break and when we come back,

we'll be talking about everything we learned

today. And it's going to be educational, but

And today what we're gonna do is that classic

Today I Learned. You know, if you go on Reddit,

you go on a few things, you see those articles

where it's like something that someone learned

today, and it could be a variety of different

crazy things, and sometimes it's kinda cool to

find out new facts or something you didn't know,

and so we have a variety of different things

we're gonna talk about and discuss, and it's

gonna be a good time, and you're gonna like it,

so. Because I said so, but I don't know anyone

wants to start from Chuck. Would you like to

kick us off or? Oh, sure. Why not? Go go right

ahead. OK, I probably should have known this,

but I didn't. So sue me. But today I learned

that after a. Huge box office bomb in 1986 George

Lucas was in some massive debt and he had to

sell off parts of Lucasfilm and Steve Jobs the

head of Apple computers offered to buy Lucas's

computer animation division Above asking price

to just to help him out. So therefore in a way

Howard the Duck is responsible for the creation

of Pixar Nice that was kind of interesting That's

actually I knew I knew that Steve Jobs helped

create Pixar, but I didn't realize it was do

because how we deduct was such a horrible movie

That's funny probably wasn't the whole reason

but that you know, it's just part of it. It's

kind of funny Yeah, it's interesting. You know,

what's kind of interesting too. I've actually

been reading the new Howard to Duck series and

it's It's actually quite good. It's a you know,

it's a lot of puns and stuff But you know a duck

being a private eye, you know, there's some there's

some laughs to be had there It is that type of

humor that's literally there but there's actually

this in the first issue There's this really funny

page of a sports montage, but done in comic book

form It is it is pretty brilliant. I thought

you know, so Now when you read it, do you read

howard the duck's voice as seth greens or? I

do not and I said sports montage. I meant training

montage, but it was quite it was quite funny

I don't know. I I kind of read it as like almost

like a donald duck type of voice. It's kind of

usually when I go, you know Maybe that's the

wrong thing donald duck, but without the lisp

I was gonna say, how do you understand that?

I can't read this, I don't know what he's saying.

Send it back, take it back. It's interesting

you have something that's movie related, I have

something that's comic book related, and I hope

this doesn't cause me to revoke my geek card,

but I'll throw this question out to you guys

first, I'll see if you know. Do you know who

the first superhero to fly was? In comics, I

should say. I should preface that part. Is he

still well known today? No, and I don't know

if you would call him well known outside of the

comic book world. I'm going to say Mighty Mouse.

That's a good guess. That's a good guess. Greg,

any thoughts? Evidently not. Well, I know Superman

at the beginning didn't used to fly. He just

he'd actually did just kind of jump long distances.

I Don't even know where to Fathom a guess here.

I will say he is a Marvel character. Oh, he is

a Marvel character. I'm gonna go with Crap what's

his name? I'm having I'm having a nerd brain

fart here people nerd brain fart in the Iron

Man movie. He was at the Human Torch? The Torch?

Yeah, the original Human Torch, yes. Thank you.

Close, actually, because like the Human Torch,

he was part of the Invaders. And that's Namor.

Oh, okay. Yes, he was the first hero to actually

fly in It's called motion pictures funnies weekly

in 1939 He was described as an ultra man who

flies in the air So he is credited as the first

character in comics to actual superhero and comics

to actually fly like you mentioned Greg, Superman

actually didn't fly until after the animated

series in 1943, in the comics he just left, but

I guess in the animated series they changed that

because they realized that's ridiculously stupid,

so they made him fly, and then it went from there.

If a guy with corny little wings on his feet

can fly, then this Superman guy can. Exactly,

exactly. Oh man, I forgot about the wings with

Namor. Yeah, that's an interesting idea. Chuck,

do you have another one? I have another movie

one, believe it or not. I'm trying to monopolize

all the movie facts here. Actually, this one

is about director Stanley Kubrick. And he's kind

of known for being like obsessive and everything

that he does and, you know, endless takes and

insane production schedules and all that stuff.

But he once received an admiration letter from

fellow great director Akira Kurosawa. I didn't

see what movie it was. It didn't really say in

this fact, but Stanley Kubrick was so obsessive

with how he was writing his reply to Akira Kurosawa.

Um, he obsessed over the letter for months, just

how he was wording things and how he was writing

this thank you letter and everything. And he

actually obsessed over it so long that Kurosawa

died before Kubrick could give him the letter

back. Oh, man. That's intense. Yeah, that's OCD

to the worst possible level. My guess is probably

after the movie was maybe Apocalypse Now because

Kurosawa died in the 80s and the last good...

Oh, no, Kubrick, so that's not... That's the

wrong... That's Coppola who did... So maybe Barry

Lyndon? I don't know. Come on, movie nerd. It

was probably either Barry Lyndon or Space Odyssey.

Space Odyssey was in the 60s. So maybe, I don't

know. Maybe my guess would be Barry Lyndon, but

I don't know. I'm not sure. I spent like half

a second thinking about it and I'm like, nah,

I don't even know. It would be my assumption

if it was like around that time, because he,

it's actually kind of like this huge... Cuba

didn't do a lot of movies and I know during the

long period of that time the big thing he was

trying to do was this like Napoleon movie which

is like one of the most talked about like movies

that never happened which I'm hoping they finally

do like documentary on because it's like it's

like this huge gigantic project that and You

know the movie AI artificial intelligence that

Steven Spielberg did yeah That actually started

as a Cougar project that he worked on forever

started making it and then died he died like

when that was before that was finished and then

Before it can be made into a movie. He passed

away and kind of passed it on to Spielberg who

did it. So Which is kind of intriguing. Yeah

It's funny cuz I was looking for stuff too and

I saw that fact and I was just like that's got

it That's gotta be tough, you know, like yeah,

you're like trying to write this letter. It just

feels So don't procrastinate people because the

person could die That's why you have social networking,

right? You don't want to if you get tweeted at

you don't wait cuz the guy could you know I can

imagine Kubrick trying to send out a tweet. It

would take forever. Trying to cram it into 140

characters. He would go crazy. It's like, you

in this vacation, if you reply to us within 24

hours. Nope. It's funny because you're in a movie

when I have a comic book one, it's where these

things are changing. I asked you questions before,

so I'll stick with that. What do you think the

biggest collection of comic books are located?

Like, who has the biggest collection of comic

books? I do! No, um... Nick Cage. Nick Cage?

Maybe you did it one time before you had to sell

them all for paying for taxes, but any other

ideas? Where the biggest collection of comic

books might be? I'm probably way off, but I could've

sworn I heard at some point that it may not have

been the biggest, but... Mile High Comics was

a store that had a huge inventory of comic books.

They're based out of Colorado, I guess, but.

I think that was probably up there, but it's

oddly enough, it's a library. Library of Congress,

which has over 100 ,000 individual issues of

comic books at the Library of Congress. Oh, wow.

Makes you feel like comics are legitimate if

that's like that many at the Library of Congress

like there's like that and then like, you know,

like important historical documents if National

Treasure has taught us anything, you know, there's

secret treasure maps and stuff like that, too

So, you know, it's a lot going there They could

make National Treasure 3 with Nicolas Cage and

he could be like, I'm going to steal Amazing

Fantasy 15. He would so do that movie, too. He

probably would. He probably has tried to make

that movie multiple times. Except he would be

stealing Superman comic because he's like obsessed

with Superman. I think he'd name this kid like

Kal -El or something. And then there's, I don't

know if you guys saw this, actually a movie coming

out this summer, a documentary called Who Killed

Superman Lives? It's a it's going over the the

failed it never made We never made the Tim Burton

movie in the 90s this that was gonna be made

starring came as Superman Tim Burton making Superman

Wow, that's Yeah, yeah, if you ever listen to

The union was Kevin Smith like the first one

I think he talks about like just some of the

ideas that were in that and I Love the one with

the giant spot the giant spider Yeah, the guy

just wanted to get a giant spider in a movie.

He finally got it into wild wild west And if

you know if they knew how to kill the spider,

it's by putting a bowl over We just need to build

a giant class dome It's a giant alien UFO turned

upside down Exactly, exactly. Smash up some sci

-fi movies. Any other fun facts we got? One real

quick that I found was, do you know a Pope Francis

was a nightclub bouncer? Really? Yeah. Why would

a pope be a nightclub bouncer? You think that

would be total opposite spectrums from where

he's hanging out every night. When you think

about it though, if you see the pope as the bouncer,

I think a lot of people will be like, I don't

want to mess with that. Everybody curses and

they're like, oh, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry,

pope. I'm sorry, I didn't mean any trouble, I

just want to have a drink and leave. I don't

want the bad karma of hurting the pope, that's

just, you know. She'd have the Pope versus Patrick

Swayze. She would make the better bouncer. Imagine

that movie. The name's Dalton. Pain don't hurt.

That's funny. This Pope's skimming off the top.

I knew the Pope. I think he had a master's degree

in chemistry, but I did not know he was a bouncer.

Maybe that's how he paid for his degree. Bouncing

clubs. Pope Frank. But, uh, then he became space

pope. Exactly. Exactly. Chuckie, anything else?

Uh, yes, I do have another one here. Uh, another

movie one, but it's a comic book movie. So I'm

liking the movie ones. Yes. Today I learned that

that scene in the original Spider -Man with Tobey

Maguire, where, uh, he's in the cafeteria and

Mary Jane. throws her tray up in the air and

all that stuff is coming out, you know, coming

down, fall in the milk carton, the food and everything.

And, uh, Peter catches it all in the tray. Yes.

Um, that was actually done in real life by Tobin

choir. Um, there was no CGI in that scene. They

put a sticky substance on the tray to kind of

keep it stuck to his hand. But after like tons

and tons of takes. He actually got it so that

he caught all of the things on the tray That

is insane. Are we sure he wasn't really bitten

by a radio? I think he may have a touch of some

spider powers. That was pretty incredible Wow,

that's insane. Yeah I remember seeing that scene

and thinking like it well that looked really

good for CGI, but then you go there you go I'm

sure he was fine catching Kirsten Dunst over

and over again. I don't think he... Yeah, I don't

think he complained about that. They'd be like,

oh, that was perfect. No, I think I messed up.

Let me do it again. It's like the, you know,

the infamous kissing scene, you know, it's like,

yeah, I get... It just didn't feel right. Let's

do like 12 more. So mine's kind of, well I guess

this isn't movie related, but it's graphic design

related, Greg, and it's font related, so I'd

be interested if you know this. You know, I'm

assuming you obviously know the font Comic Sans?

Yeah. Do you know what it's based off of? No

idea, actually. and it's actually based upon

one of the most infamous comics of all time and

Released in the yeah, I would say so and it's

actually based upon the Watchmen comic and Dave

Given's lettering that he did in that So that's

where the comic sans comes from and what's kind

of funny is that he hates it? Like he's like

I hate the lettering so it's and I think it mostly

everyone does so yeah, it's good. It's good for

reading in the Watchmen, but it's, it's not good

for actual design stuff. Please don't use Comic

Sans, people. Yeah. Yeah. I see people. It's,

yeah, it's kind of bad. I, I, I remember seeing

someone do like a history paper and call it in

Comic Sans. I'm like, that's a bold choice. Yeah.

Funny. That's today I learned that. My favorite,

uh, font for doing graphic design work is Sentry

Gothic. Interesting what it would uh, because

I had already what font is the talking in circles?

I go Um, I believe that is century gothic with

me, uh playing around with it a little bit. Nice.

Nice. Yeah, I have no idea idea. My font ability

is is non -existent. So I'm like that's time

to roman or and that's all I got I know that

one. Uh, I know there's some fonts that I I really

know pretty well, and if I'm out somewhere and

I see it, I will point it out and go, oh, that's

Zephino, or that's Papyrus, or... Windings? I

like Windings. Magneto! Chuck, I'll bring it

back over to you. Did you learn anything else

today? I did. I'm a little skeptical about this

one, but what the heck, might as well believe

it. It's on the internet. Today, I learned that

due to some complicated contractual obligations

with source material, the part of John McLean

from Die Hard had to first be offered to Frank

Sinatra, who is 73 at the time. Nice. Yeah, there's

actually the movie The Detective that is based

upon the same source material. Oh, it's just

kind of crazy. I didn't know they had to offer

to fake Sinatra because I would want to see that

movie Die Hard with Sinatra. Yeah, it'd be like

a musical like you Break out a song during it.

Yeah, I it is interesting cuz like the Die Hard

actually based upon it like a original proper

Something else don't people realize that but

yeah, it's nothing like the book that it's based

off I don't even know why they did that. I mean,

it's somewhat like the same I guess the name

of the character is the same but I think Bruce

Willis just kicked it up a notch. He's like,

all right, we're doing this We're gonna have

Carl Winslow come in That's funny how that guy

has been typecast as cops like all the time now

I know there was article on CNN the other day

and there was a cop in the picture I swear he

looked just like him It might have actually been

a good picture of him So I also today I learned

a few other things too and I don't know why I

got obsessed about this but I'm always interested

about like traditions and Like why we do certain

things like why do we do christmas trees? Like

why do we why is easter eggs or thing? Like where

do these come from? I always kind of intrigued

by that and one thing that kind of always Interests

me is like why do we like celebrate birthdays?

Like where does that come from and like why is

it like everyone does it? There's not many like

traditions that are Cross -cultural like you

know people in america to like south america,

you know australia like all these different cultures

All celebrate birthdays that are a lot that are

pulled opposite about a lot of other things So

I was kind of curious like where it originated

from Do you know who the first people were to

do it that to celebrate birthdays? And it's not

chuck e cheese The amish There might be the only

people that don't celebrate I guess maybe they

do because they have the rum springa or whatever

Which sounds delicious. I love cakes with rum

in it. But actually it was the Egyptians, or

I guess the first people, not surprisingly, to

celebrate birthdays. It was like the first people,

scholars have basically traced it back to pharaohs

who, you know, pharaohs were pretty good on celebrating

anything about themselves. Why not when they

were born? So it requires a lot of ego to...

Can't make a gigantic pyramid dedicated your

own self -worth. So why not? Why not celebrate

your birthday, too? But it's actually kind of

good. No, just a little bit of ego there. Yeah.

And what's kind of evolved over time, obviously,

like, you know, they didn't do everything like

it's not like they, you know, they celebrated

birthdays and that's when the birthday song was

was. uh created but like the next big step was

like the greeks actually they added like the

idea of candles to cakes that's funny they uh

and then Romans did some other thing like being

pagans are actually too notorious for celebrating

birthdays and You know, it's kind of debated

if they were before the Egyptians or not but

that looked because there and what was kind of

funny is that Christians were first the Christian

religion was very against the idea of celebrating

birthday since the pagans did so much so much

so that when the church was being formed that

they a huge section of the church did not want

Christmas to be a thing they felt it was a too

much like the pagan religion or pagan traditions

because it was celebrating a birthday. So there

was actually this huge debate of Christmas should

even be a celebration, which is kind of intriguing.

And then Santa Claus stepped in and said, we

should do this. Exactly. And he gave out, he

gave coal to all the people who didn't want to

do it. And then they learned their lesson. And

I thought it was funny. You were talking about

the, was it the Greeks doing the song, the birthday,

happy birthday song? Or they, they added candles,

the idea of candles. Who was creating the? The

birthday songs actually newer That don't think

it they charge cuz it was well It was funny cuz

that you said created because I'm like created

kind of a strong word I feel like they totally

ad -libbed that thing like on the spot like Happy

birthday to you Happy birthday to you. We don't

have the cake ready yet. Happy birthday. What's

his name? Birthday to you. Actually, the birthday

song is actually was developed by Robert Coleman,

which is part of this, too. In 1924, the actual

birthday song that we have we know today. And

it's actually one of the most expensive songs

to buy rights for. So, thanks for that Chuck.

I gotta buy rights to that now. I changed the

words to protect the innocent. That's why I think

a lot of people don't do that song. A lot of

restaurants and a lot of movies, they don't actually

use that song. One of the few movies that...

Chuck changed the tempo enough, I think. Yeah,

exactly. It was a remix version of it, so we're

good. It was my cover. It's like my pearl jam

cover It's like the It's one of the few movies

I know that actually has that song to tie into

the tie into the the movie talk One of the few

and it's an animated movie. We're talking about

animated movies and that's Dumbo actually has

happy birthday And it's which is kind of intriguing

because it's so expensive to put in a movie it's

like that and like white Christmas and it's it's

that's kind of intriguing to looking at the the

list of The most expensive songs it's it's crazy.

I think like kesha is number four, you know What?

No, i'm joking. Okay I still think we need a

pearl jam cover of happy birthday. Just have

eddie vetter singing that I don't know That'd

be amazing. Yeah, you got anything else chuck

or you fact out? No, I do have a couple more

I think this is a oddball when I found it's not

really a movie or comic one, but um I actually

learned that, um, there is a psychological disorder

caused by disappointment from visiting the city

of Paris. And the name disorder is called being

French. No, but that's really a real thing. Apparently

like people it's so like hyped up in their minds

and they think it's so amazing. And then they

go there and they're disappointed for whatever

reason. Like why does it smell here? Why are

the French so snobby? I don't know why we need

to Create a psychological disorder for it. We're

doing that for everything now, but whatever Explains

maybe like in my this point with a movie or so,

you know, it's probably the same issue Yeah,

I never would never gone to Paris it's never

Or had it really had a desire to a lot of cities

I'd love to go to but I don't know Paris feels

like I don't know French even though I took it

for four years and then didn't college and don't

remember anything There I lived vicariously through

the griswolds That's good enough so what you

know, it's always intriguing I feel like when

people take like comic book stuff and try to

like figure out what it would be like in the

real world and someone did this with With batman

and try to estimate how much it would actually

cost to be batman Any ideas on what you feel

like it would cost to be a real life batman?

There's also one for iron man as well that I

yeah, i'm really fun. Um, I think yeah, I want

to say um It was over a trillion. It was like

1 .6 trillion or something. I thought I don't

know could be right Any ideas greg? Uh, I want

to say 25 billion It's actually not as much as

you would think, I guess. I guess maybe it depends

on, well, this study that I looked at, and it

maybe just looked at the bare bones of being

Batman, but it said it would only cost, only

is a strong word, but $300 million to be Batman.

But I don't know if that's like considering everything

he does or if that just means That's just counting

the training that you have to go through. But

that's the grappling gun exactly But yeah, so

it was three which is interesting because it's

like that's less that costs uh, the actual dark

knight trilogy It's probably probably just as

much as that if not more so But yeah, so maybe

that one was wrong. I don't know pesky internet.

They can't ever trust it But uh, Chuck, since

my fact seems to be questionable, maybe I didn't

learn that. I learned not to trust the internet.

Did you learn anything actually that's better

than my incorrect fact? I have one that may be

hearsay as well, but I think it's funny so I'm

gonna read it anyway. But I learned that while

working on the set of Armageddon, Ben Affleck

asked director Michael Bay why NASA would bother

sending an inexperienced drill crew into space

when it would be much easier to teach astronauts

how to drill. And Michael Bay told him to shut

up. That is kind of logical. It reminds me of

there's this movie. I can't think Kate Leopold

or something like that It was a review was done

by Roger Ebert and he was like kind of explaining

the plot in the film and he kind of worked through

the logic of it and he basically Made to the

conclusion that this movie because it's about

this guy who's time traveling But he's like,

you know, this movie was its concept is that

this man is having sex with his granddaughter

And I don't think they realize that's actually

going on Like it was it was this guy who came

from the past or something like that. I I forget

it started Hugh Jackman if I remember correctly

I think it was Ebert. I forget exactly but Sticking

with the comic book realm. I don't know why but

that's the way it was I went this one I know

is real because it's a Guinness World Record

So, you know, it's legit because those check

their sources so and it's a comic book related

and you know, which Which character or comic

book holds the record for most number of characters

on? The cover like I do I do I figured Greg would

know this because it's recent it had to do with

a wedding and it was a Deadpool comic I actually

have it you do you do it and you're very correct.

It's Deadpool number 27 It has the Guinness Book

of World Records for most characters on the comic

and and you own it Craig So today I learned Greg

owns a famous comic How many characters are on

the cover? Shit time 200 In four twenty four.

Oh, I'm sorry 232 it beat the previous record

which was crisis on if it in earth Yes, I do

take that DC. I have the second place one Their

powers combined yeah, I would have thought it

would have been like something like Punisher

kills the Marvel Universe or something where

they show the giant stack of like all the heroes

He killed or whatever. Yeah Not so much not so

much. I don't know. I don't know what like the

if it requires them to be in full frame I don't

know get get us a serious with that type of stuff.

Even it's the most asinine Like record in the

history of man like someone who's like the guy

who sets like the pogo For being the you know

going on the pogo stick in this in the swamp

for the longest period of time They're like they

checked like the the minute things. It's crazy.

It's not a relatively exactly Regulation pogo

stick so it doesn't count so air temperature

wind speed Right. I just remember like the best

thing going to like library and a kid was like

getting those books Picking them up though. Yeah

I'm out of facts. I don't know if you have anything

else. Great. I have one more It'll be a fun little

question to ask you guys. Perfect Do you guys

know what? The last movie was to be released

on VHS. Ever. Man. UHF? Negative. Maybe it's

a Disney movie. I don't know. I have no idea.

I'm guessing it's a Disney movie of some sort,

but I could be wrong. No. Science fiction? I'm

not really sure, actually. I've never seen the

movie myself. I'll give you a hint. It's starring

Viggo Mortensen. History of violence? Yes. Dan

got it with the hint. We're tied, Dan. Yeah,

interesting. Last movie ever to be released on

VHS. And, you know, the last movie ever to be

released on Laserdisc. Star Wars. One traffic

park nope close end of days with Yeah, that that

what's kind of ironic because it was the end

of days for Along those lines, you know what

the last minute we checked out of blockbuster

was it was the one with Seth Rogan James Banco

and all those guys were the world. Yeah, this

is the end And the first DVD cover, or the first

movie on DVD? Disaster movie. From the 90s. From

the 90s, was it Godzilla? No, that would have

killed the format immediately. Deep Impact. Twister.

Oh, okay. One of my favorites. I like Twister.

Oh, I did know that. I forgot it. Damn it. Today

I remembered. Stupid memory. Sometimes it takes

the little guy in there a while to find a file.

Yeah. Give me some time. Control F, control F.

It helps. Yeah. But before we go, we like to

end each episode with a letter. And today I'm

going to be talking about, oh, that, that, that

little social network that does not know how

to stop. And that of course is Facebook. If you

go on Facebook, it won't take you more than five

minutes before you see one of those infamous

Share this if post, you know those share this

if you really believe in this cause share this

if you're a hero Share this if you remember the

90s. Share this if you like cookies People just

want you to share this if basically you can read

that or click a button I don't think you even

need to read I think you just need to click the

button to share it and the thing is though the

sad part is people think that what they're doing

is sharing an opinion or trying to promote whatever

it may be maybe even a good cause but the truth

is people using that as nothing as an excuse

to promote themselves or promote their webpage

or get more hits it's not about trying to sway

opinion or make people think a certain thing

it's just about self -promotion uh recently on

reddit i saw a video of a homeless man talking

about basically the culture we live in how he

went on facebook and sent a message to all his

friends just asking if they would have a conversation

in real life phone call do something and no one

replied he didn't indicate anything about helping

or anything like that not like he was reaching

out for for money just simply having a conversation

and it does peg the question is is facebook do

people want friends or do people want an audience

and i think it's very much the show that the

idea of sharing is just kind of hey this is what

i think or it's just bloated Garbage really it

doesn't really mean anything I think you know

I think there's a lot of good things to get out

of social media funny things videos Necessary

cat videos you know all the great essential things

that keep our society moving I'm just saying

Try to promote your own ideas. Try to communicate

with one another. I think one of the greatest

things about being in podcasting is that I've

had some amazing conversations with people through

the aspects of social media. Conversations about

nothing really big. You know, conversations about

really important topics like movies and if Batman

should have a gun or not. These hard -hitting

issues that could shape our world and, you know,

occasionally a political conversation here or

there. But social media certainly... Controlled

our world positively and negatively. I just think

that we you know There's there's a little bit

of tweaks we can do here and there and I have

no idea what I'm saying If it makes any sense,

you might be a crazy person because I don't know

what I'm trying to say. But anyways Social media

gets pretty crazy though. Yeah Yeah. My favorite,

my favorite too is when you go in the comment

sections of something and like people are posting

memes now as comments. I know. And you literally

like, you scroll down like two lines and it's

like the same exact meme again. You just start

seeing them over and over again and it's ridiculous.

We've become a culture that communicates through

meme and emoticon. We've gone through, we were

words and abbreviations, now it's just images.

It's like the electronic equivalent of grunting

to someone that's walking by you. Exactly. You

can't even form a sentence. It's like, you know,

you go to the doctors and sometimes it's like

they give you a chart of like what, you know,

how you're feeling through like smiley faces

or whatever, like, you know, painful or un -painful.

Point to which one is most describes you. We'll

just hold up our Facebook or we'll hold up our

like smartphones and show what meme we're thinking

of right now that correlates to our current emotion

or something. Yeah, it's insane. It's insane.

Anything else before and we say that as a podcast

where we just sit here and talk But I think that's

a kind of the intriguing thing about podcasts.

It does allow for conversation when You know

something like Facebook doesn't so ironically

now we're gonna give you ways to contact us on

social media let the um welcome to hypocritical

podcast uh where we contradict ourselves almost

immediately so yes there's a lot of ways to contact

us on social media and send us memes uh you know

that we love doing we do talk about good stuff

though we original stuff i do i mean you know

i'm not against memes i just think it's uh you

know it's I do think it's funny that when someone

uses a meme and someone gets angry that they

use the wrong meme. I'm like, it's okay. Let's

settle down here. But anyways, to contact us
