About this Episode

Em, Amy, and Nicole dive into the Starbright arc—Jem's first movie deal with producer Howard Sands. When Pizzazz's father buys the studio and gives Eric control, chaos ensues as the Misfits take over the production and Jem and the Holograms are sidelined. The trio breaks down the film's turbulent production, the Misfits' sabotage, a serious subplot involving one of the Starlight Girls facing blindness, and how the Holograms ultimately make their own film. They discuss character moments, plot structure, animation choices, and rate the three-parter.

I hope I didn't miss anything exciting! Showtime,

Synergy! Hello and welcome to Showtime Synergy,

the gem review podcast here on the GeekCast or

Radio Network. I am Em and joining me are my

hologram girls, Amy and Nicole. Hello. How's

it going? Jinx. I tried to beat Amy out of a

who. You knew I was coming, didn't you? Of course.

That's your catchphrase or you can never not

say it. I know. I can't not say it now on a podcast.

It's terrible. I started spontaneously doing

it on my first podcast, and boom, it just stuck

with me. Yep. Heck, you're famous for it now

at this point. I know, it's like, dang, man.

Everybody expects it. Yeah, it's like, Amy, without

the woohoo, it's like, is the world ending? Oh

my god. Oh goodness, good times. It's like Kimber

and her, truly outrageous. At least the woohoo's

not that annoying. Yeah, true. I think we need

thankfully we're only two episodes into this

podcast so I can probably go back and Take the

painstaking steps to actually count Between the

last five episodes and these three that we'll

talk about today to actually count how many times

she says it At least once a show. Yeah, at least

once an episode. At least. So as I said, we're

here to talk about the next three episodes in

Jim and the Holograms Season 1. They are the

Starbright three -parter. This is basically right

after the five -parter. They're continuing on

with the storyline. They are... You know going

forward with you know the whole movie deal and

Howard Sands and all that stuff so Do you guys

have anything you want to bring up before we

get to it? Nope This was only going to end in

disaster Yes, just like the first episode of

the podcast did and it wasn't until well not

this podcast I'm not saying the podcast is gonna

say the movie idea was a great idea Until until

you know, you knew something was gonna go horribly

wrong and it was gonna end a disaster And then

of course at the last minute everything is able

to pull together because Jim and the holograms

are so awesome I said that to someone that was

really young and I'm like, oh no, I'm not that

old. I cannot pull Wayne's world on young people.

I just can't. If they haven't seen it, they have

not. It's micated. No, they haven't. Let's do

this Thelma and Louise ending. We're gonna get

the star bright part one after this So in the

first episode we found out that they did a one

-week premiere two -week rerun of that first

basically they they ran the first episode of

the five parter for three weeks straight and

then put a new episode out and now that we are

in 1986 here with star bright it is July and

They are putting them out every Saturday at this

point The podcast will still air on Sundays no

matter what? Because that's what we already set

up So Starbright Part 1, Jem stars in Howard

Sands' new movie, part of the prize she and the

Holograms won in the Battle of the Bands. But

of course, Pazazz convinces her father to buy

the movie studio that is making the film and

give ownership to Eric, who quickly seizes control

of the film, adds the misfits to the cast. Eric

places the focus of the film on the misfits,

and Jem and the Holograms are relegated to supporting

roles. Finally fed up with the misfit's disruptive

and tyrannical behavior, Gem and the Holograms,

along with video, quit the movie, but Jerika

receives shocking news about one of the Starlight

Girls, Bonnie... I'm sorry, that is the worst

name for a little girl. I don't even know why

they just call her Bonnie. They had to call her

Bonnie. I know! I know! It's like, ugh. Uh, who

has been diagnosed with a rare optical condition

that will leave her blind within a matter of

months. Oh no! Dun dun dun! The featured songs

in this episode is Who Is He Kissin' by Jim and

the Holograms, Jealousy, Jim and the Holograms,

and Universal Appeal by The Misfits. And of course,

this was the first episode to air as a full episode

instead of, you know, a broke, you know, a multi

-parter kind of thing. Now, on my DVD set, I

don't know what the production people were doing.

I don't know if it's... I would have to... I

have the complete series set, so I try to watch

them on the DVD. I mean, I don't mind using Netflix

for it, but I really do want to make sure I watch

it on the DVD. On my DVD set, the theme is not

the theme. It's the instrumental version of the

gem music. It still has all the same animation

of her singing and whatever else, and the lip

syncing and all that stuff, but... Oh, you mean

when it wraps it up? No, I'm talking about the

opening credits. It is not the main gem theme

and it is not the gem girls theme. It is just

straight instrumental over the animation. Yes,

you know, I noticed that at the very end of this

episode of that being there. I skipped all the

other ones, so. They will do that a couple of

times, and I've written it down here. Overall,

you know coming off the five -parter doing I

mean this this is a natural progression here

going into starbright and making the movie and

continuing on with the story I like the plot

There are going to be when we get down to misfit

moments probably a lot of stuff that I don't

like about this one Simply because well, there's

at least actually there's only two that I don't

like but it's I Don't know it just I like the

start of this. I like how they're continuing

the story, like I said, and I like how the Misfits

have just become a nuisance at this point. They

are awesome. Don't you dare knock them. They're

the ones that make Jim and the Holograms interesting.

No, I would make a Misfats joke, but Amy has

not seen that episode yet. Oh, yeah. It's been

a while since I've because I went through it

over the summer, but I don't remember all of

these episodes I mean, I I'm sure that if I yeah

miss fast. Yeah Miss fats it's a it's a language

barrier What did you guys think of the opener

here for starbite part one in the plot Nicole

I liked it. It was fun. Like I said, I I don't

know. She illustrates exactly what a girl should

not do. Exactly. A grown woman, actually. A grown

woman, yeah. I love the part where he's like,

I don't care what happens. She's happy and she's

out of my hair leaving me alone so I go make

money That's gonna come back to bite him in the

ass it does eventually Very much so Because This

whole episode is where this whole three arc episode,

you know We'll get to it eventually when we talk

about the other two But this is exactly why not

every you know, Joe Schmoe can go out and work

for a Hollywood studio. Yeah Yeah, I think Eric

Raymond learns that pretty quick. Yeah, oh, Eric.

Poor Eric. The person that I have a problem with

in this three -parter is actually Kimber. Oh,

Lord, here we go. Well, the thing is, she's got

a nice guy after six steps. No, it just shows

you that nice guy's two -finished last. Yeah.

Oh. Yeah, yeah, I will agree. Kimber was pretty,

you know, pretty rude to Jeff at first. I know,

I'm just like, hey, what's going on here? It

took Nick making some girl cry for her to finally

go, oh, maybe I shouldn't like him after all.

Yep. All right, so Amy did you have any thoughts

on the overall plot? No, I actually really liked

it I like the fact that like, you know for the

next three episodes we get this kind of overarching

Plot that you know it it's The making of the

movie basically that they won in the last, you

know, at the very end of the five part or where

they were supposed to be able to make a movie

and to see how that progresses and then crashes

and then they pick up the pieces, make it work.

Um, which usually doesn't happen, but you know,

Hey, when people get together and do things for

charity, amazing things happen, right? Yeah,

except the misfits don't have a charitable bone

in their body unless it helps them. No, no, they

don't but you know But isn't that pointless?

No, she's not, really. No, because she asked

about which girl was going blind. She does. She's

like, well, OK, yes, she does. Yeah. Yes, she

does. And then Roxy and Pizzazz basically just

bulldoze over her. Oh, I guess we should mention,

this is the first part where we're introduced

to another misfit that comes in at Clash. Clash,

yeah. Constance. Her name is Constance. Yeah.

Her name's Clash. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. You basically

have a hologram and a misfit coming in, even

though video's not, she's more of behind the

scenes for Jim and the holograms. But first of

all, what kind of, even a nickname, what kind

of nickname is video? I mean, okay. I love Kristy

Marks. I love Kristy Marks. I love her writing,

but I'm sorry. That's the strangest nickname

for anybody I've ever heard of. Oh, come on.

It's not any worse or better than Zipper. Well,

he zips situations up forever. Or Clash. Clash

is like a... It's just more of the fact that

she does the whole bang thing with the cymbals.

But it's like, I don't know that many girls that

could pull off that word. Clash. At least at

least they didn't name video click because then

you'd have the whole song click Well, it almost

would make sense because those two are kind of

like they grew up in the same town which we find

out later Yeah, yeah, and they're they're related.

There's there's back background there All right,

we're gonna get to the hologram moments after

this you What do you got, Nicole? Hologram moment.

For the whole three -parter? No, for this episode.

Oh, just for the one -parter. Yeah, for part

one. I know this is going to sound weird, but

I like the music videos. Because you've got two

videos that pretty much show the side of Jem

slash Jerika getting upset with Rio. And then

you get the opposite of Rio getting upset with

both of them. It's just like just... frickin'

talk already, okay? No, I actually do like the

music in this. And of course, the stunt guy,

he's awesome. He just is a nice guy. I like him

as well. I just like the beginning where they

have a set up and of course the ending with all

the tragedy, of course. I just like the conflict

that the Misfits and the holograms have and it

just gets better and better. That's very true

because like the holograms, like before they

even get involved in the movie, like the Misfits

have already started problems for it. And then

on top of that, they start laying the groundwork

for jealousy. They, they try to get Rio to be

jealous. They try to get Kimber to be jealous.

And then they also start laying stuff with the

production crew. So, I mean, quite literally

everything set up on this, this episode. Um,

I thought was really brilliant. They set up the

everything and then they come to a resolution

in the end. So it's like, and they, and they

don't just set up some of these things and leave

it hanging as like they actually do come to a

reasonable end at the very end of the three parts.

So, I mean, I was pretty amazed at how much you

cover in just three episodes and they're only

22 minutes each. And I thought, dang man, this

just goes so quick, but It's so well done. And

I was just like, wow, I'm really surprised. I

know. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's amazing because

it's true. I mean, it's not really a dull moment

in it. No, no. And every, every scene is useful

and it puts you forward and pushes you forward.

So it's like, dang. Yeah. It's smart. So absolutely.

We'll probably put it up again and again. Any

other hologram moments, Amy, for you? I didn't

mention this before, but I like the fact that

they had, you know, they've got the main plot,

they've got the conflict with it, and then they

have the whole Bonnie subplot, which kind of

pulls into the main plot, the reason why they

continue to be motivated to keep doing this movie,

which is terrible. And then I also, uh, another

hologram moment that I thought I, at this point

at the very, toward the end of the, of the episode,

she'd get this, um, the fight between the Misfits

and the, and Jem, she gets all upset. She throws

a star at his ass and knocks her over and she's

like, I quit. And I was like, yes, no one should

have to deal with this crap. Yeah, they have

to come. For me, um, I wrote this down and I

don't I honestly don't remember what Rio Did

or said or whatever else but I said Nicole is

probably gonna disagree with me here but Rio

is right and I think that was at the moment when

When Eric was vying to basically take over everything

And Rio said there's no way you should be on

a movie set Eric or me you know what he he does

do his time for the crime because by the end

of this three -parter The amount of crap that

he has to go through with pizzazz. That's like

Yeah, I I almost felt pity for him. I really

did Yeah, that's not gonna happen for me until

the next podcast honestly because next time around

there's a scene in one of the episodes where

they just basically throw him to the wolves,

not literally, but uh... I wrote this down because

not that I'm wanting to cause controversy, but

I just, I thought of this as soon as I saw all

this stuff with Eric and taking control and having

to influence and do everything on the movie set.

Eric Raymond is the eighties is what Michael

Bay is to today's filmmaking. Well, at least

in the sense that he has to control everything

on a film set. Yeah. Wow. Okay. I think I've

heard it all. There is a lot of explosions too,

as we'll get to in the third part. Yup. That's

very true. I do like how Howard Sands does go

to... Phyllis's father and yes, I did that on

purpose But the the old man will never listen

not not until the end he will he will never listen

Hey Howard tried to tell him, you know Howard

did try to warn him, but he just yeah Like you

already said Amy. Oh, well as long as she's out

of my hair. I don't care, you know uh... in the

last one uh... and this is pretty indicative

of christy marks in her writing she never really

forgets things or leaves plots just hanging uh...

i'm very happy that this ended even though it's

not the best cliffhanger the series i'm very

happy that it ended with the whole body storyline

and you know the whole jim with the shark face

two hundred and fifty thousand dollars Yeah,

very a lot of money, you know be this special

eye surgery to fix her eyes But you know it it

really kind of it pulls at the heartstrings So

while it's a very different ending than like

a cliffhanger ending That's like, oh somebody's

gonna die the fact that you find out that one

of the girls is going to go blind I mean, it's

just like I thought it was a good cliffhanger.

I agree, that was real good. I mean, it's a different

kind. It's a - Yeah, no, it is. People on your

heartstrings cliffhanger rather than, oh my gosh,

somebody's about to die. Yep. Yeah. Unlike Amy,

I have not watched this in at least two years

or so, two or three years, when I first got the

DVD set or whatever else, and - So watching these

is like me going back to my childhood honestly

because I don't remember a lot of stuff about

Outside of the five -parter that opened it. I

don't remember a lot about these episodes so

I'm rediscovering all this stuff for the first

time again and I were worth six episodes in and

Nicole's least favorite Starlight girl is kind

of faded to the background. I don't know. I don't

know if she comes back and has a more prominent

role. There's more. Yeah. And I think that's

what Stormer was kind of trying to find out.

Is it Ashley that's going blind? I think that's

the reason why she asked, which little girl is

it that needs the operation? Because I think

after the last episode, there's a little connection

between her and Ashley. I mean they didn't it

was kind of more implied than it was like I that's

just after after watching it going oh I bet that's

who she's wondering if it's Ashley or not roller

coaster rides you know she does some cute things

but then she's just a typical girl and she pouts

a lot yeah there's a lot of girls on here that

pouts yeah Alright, we are gonna get to the misfit

moments for part one after this. At Misfit Moments

for Starbright Part 1, I actually only have two,

and one of them is kind of nitpicky, it's kind

of a joke. There's a point where we see Jerrica

go into Synergy's new room at the mansion, since

they moved her out of the drive -in and whatever

else. and my question was did she say joe time

synergy because it didn't sound like showtime

to me it's like it did she said yeah it did sound

like joe time to me and i thought okay i thought

you know maybe it's a cup of joe i don't know

i did i did catch it saying like that to me too

so you weren't the only one that caught it with

okay i didn't put it in there but i thought Maybe

I heard it wrong, but now that you bring it up,

I'm like, okay. No, I guess I wasn't the only

one that heard it is. Yeah. It's Joe time synergy.

I was like, Oh, okay. Where's the Duke and lady

J. Yeah, really? Yeah. Uh, every time everyone's

having an affair with someone else. So why not

bring Duke into it? Oh boy. Uh, every time I

see Raymond with Kimber, it makes my skin crawl.

It's meant to be. It reminds me of all those,

you know, real life, you know, stuff like, it

reminds me of all those forensic file episodes

I used to watch and all these, you know, shows

on investigation discovery channel and whatever

else about all these, you know, crime cases or

anything else. That's what, like seriously, Eric

Raymond reminds me of a stalker. He just does

If they were going for creepy vibe they totally

hit it. Oh, yeah, what didn't you like about

this one Amy? Um There was a like You get this

whole thing between Rio getting jealous of gem

and Nick on the movie set and I thought why?

Earlier in this episode you talked about how

you wanted it that Jericho you preferred her

instead. I was like, dude You don't have to you

don't have to tell me you know how I feel about

real You're right Nicole, it's just like dude

you just like get over yourself already You just

told Jerrica that you're like all over her. I

mean It's not her it's him he has And it's not

going to stop because I mean He's the drama.

The drama pours in because of Rio. I can't say

anything else about him here because if I do,

I'm going to spoil what's going to happen in

the next podcast. Nicole, anything you didn't

like about this one? Well, I can agree with Amy

all night long without that. There's a couple

of animation errors in this. where Kimber had

Jim's hair. Yeah. I had to rewind it. I'm like,

wait, did Jim just walk in on herself? What's

going on? No, it was Kimber. Kimber suddenly

has her red hair turns pink. Yeah. So that kind

of threw me off for a second and actually had

to go back. But like I said, I'm sorry I go off

on Rio all the time, but Amy already did that

for me. Thank you. There will be occasions where

I do that because dude, really? Yeah, I don't

believe it's the first one that has the Misfits

music video where I This is another thing that

okay. No, I love the Misfits but because as always

hiked to do this gigantic woman thing in her

video Yeah, I don't know if you noticed that

and this is what the second time that they've

done it. It's just like She likes to be bigger

than life. Yeah, I know. At the beginning of

this episode, if I remember right, she's like,

I want to be bigger than life. Exactly. That

defines her right there. Exactly. All right,

we're going to move on to star right part two

after this. Starbright Part 2 aired on July 12th,

1986. Horrified at the news of Bonnie's impending

blindness, Jerika learns from her doctor that

there is an experimental laser surgical procedure

that could save Bonnie's vision. However, the

cost of the surgery is a staggering $250 ,000.

Having canceled all their tour dates to star

in the movie, Aja hits on the idea to divert

funds from Starlight Music to cover the cost.

But when they arrive there, they find the building

closed down and without power. Joni, the business

manager of Starlight Music, tells the group that

Eric has drained huge sums of money from Starlight

Music to promote the Misfits movie. Left with

no other option, Jim and the Holograms are forced

to return to the movie. Eric's demands push the

group to their limits once again, especially

when Jim nearly falls from a set display, suspended

several dozen feet in the air. Video. worst nickname

ever, records the accident hoping to use it to

shut down the movie's production, but Jim pleads

with her not to because of Bonnie's surgery.

The songs featured on this one are Congratulations

by The Misfits, Show Me The Way by Jim and the

Holograms, Love Is Doing It To Me by Jim and

the Holograms as well. You know we pick up kind

of right where we left off and they add more

to it. Yep. with this plot. Amy, you were saying

off air about how these three episodes kind of

show you that in this business, whether it's

the music business or the movie business, you

have contracts, you have obligations. You can't

just do what the Misfits did in the five -parter

about the contract. Don't show me that. I'm not

doing it. But daddy paid them off. Yeah. But

they do try their best to you know, make people

quit in this episode Everybody they the missus

go out of their way to find a way to you know

Get it everybody in one way or another spend

more money triple their budget And then, of course,

the whole situation is, you know, because of

the way that they're, you know, they threw out

the original script, they've rewrote everything,

and they're just trying to run everything into

the ground, basically. And that includes not

being safe on set, which is the kind of the highlight

of this episode specifically, because not only

is Jem put in danger, but Kimber, toward the

end, is also put in danger for a really dumb

reason. But that's in my misfit moment Yeah,

yeah, there's There you know I only had two last

time for misfit moments. There's gonna be at

least Four this time around There's just so many

things wrong with those people All four of them.

The three misfits and Raymond. Those four people.

There's so many things wrong with those people.

I enjoy them so much though. We all know you're

evil. You like evil things. I like my bad guys.

I'm sorry. They make life interesting. well even

even the bad guys are making it hard for the

bad guys because in this episode we also get

the whole clash trying to sabotage gem and the

holograms by switching their call sheets and

i'm like raymond has said several times he wants

to stay on on to get the movie done that he wants

to stay on schedule and you know the misfits

are purposefully just making it hard on gem and

all them. But they're also making it hard on

Eric to get the movie done. So this whole idea

of contracts, you know, hey, you know, even he

as a bad guy realizes that some of these contracts

kind of, you know, cost money, and it's not like

he's made of it. No, he'd rather steal it than

try to make it. Yeah. Um, found something plot

Nicole. Oh, This was a really fun episode. There

was a lot going on because they do talk about

they have that really good moment. And I guess

this could be one of my hologram moments, too,

when Jerika goes to talk to Bonnie about her

eyes. And you could tell that she doesn't want

to tell her what's going to go on. And it's one

of those touching moments. You're just like,

wow, this is a kid's cartoon. This is a serious.

This is a serious issue, you know, and and. I've

really enjoyed that part as well, but you get

like gem falling from heights, you get sabotage,

and there's a lot going on with this episode

and I really enjoyed it. Absolutely. So let's

go ahead and get to hologram moments right now.

This image will be in the post. I love seeing

Jerrica and Jem in the same frame. There was

a point where the holograms, they showed them,

synergy showed the two of them together in the

same frame of the cartoon. I absolutely love

that. Self -sacrificing people are always the

best people. Sure, Jem knows going to the police

and everything is the right thing to do about

Eric and the misfits and all the crap that they

pull. But the movie wouldn't get made if they

wouldn't be able to get the surgery for Bonnie.

So, you know, it really sucks being a self -sacrificer

at times. Yeah. Cause they're kind of stuck between

a rock and a hard place on that. Yeah. Uh, this

probably should start in my misfit moments, but

I have some reason it's in my hologram moments.

Well, that was an explosive ending. And of course

it just walks away without trying to help. Jerk.

Nicole, what are some of your hologram moments?

Like I said, the whole part with Jerrica and

Bunny. That's the part that I like most probably

about this episode. And like I said, it's one

of those things. This is a very serious subject.

I mean, I can't imagine being eight years old

and having to go through this. It was one of

those things. I do like the whole Kimber's in

trouble at the end. That was really good. Cliffhanger

that's for sure. It was well, I guess she's on

a cliff. I guess that could be whatever Explosive

ending, you know, those are probably my two favorite

moments there. Oh Actually, I'll put one more

when the script went through Jerrica because

she's a hologram. I thought that was kind of

cool No one was paying attention. I really like

that. I really like that. It still goes to prove

that they could only take it so far, this illusion.

Well, they take it so far to their advantage

a lot of the times because in one of the episodes

coming up on the podcast, they go right through

a couple of trees. Yeah, that's true. That's

true. So they do use it to their advantage. Amy

hologram moments for this one. Uh, we already

mentioned the stormer asking about the little

girl. This is the episode where that happens

because, um, clash lets it. She squeals to the

rest of them. Well, actually it was video that

mentioned it and she was like, Oh, darn it. I

guess I wouldn't say that because then it just

gonna makes them clench down even more on it

because they know that they can't leave for whatever

reason, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. So. Um, I thought

it was really cool that Aja makes a brilliant

move to get gem out of a scene so that, you know,

it was the scene where, where, um, Raymond hands

the, the directors, you know, the notes or whatever,

the, the, the, yeah. And it goes through her

and they're like, Oh crap. And Aja just thinks

fast, and I love her reason for how she did this.

She goes up to Pazazz and says, oh, Gemma has

like two more scenes than you do. And of course,

she just like, no! It's like, wait a minute,

I want her out of this scene right now! I was

like, yeah! Aja is so smart, man. She has her

moments. She can't drive, but she has her moments.

Yeah But I also like the fact that Jericho give

this Rio a piece of her mind when he tries to

come back Really? Really? Oh my gosh, dude. Oh

and one other thing. I thought it was really

cool This is where we actually find out the complexities

of what it's like to be Jericho and Jim and have

to at like the first episode host a party, but

actually be like the guest of honor, but slash

you're also Jericho, who's trying to run everything

in the background. And then of course, this situation

where you've got this, you know, Jericho is supposed

to be the assistant of Raymond and Jem is in

the movie. So it's like back forth, back and

forth, back forth at the time where like just

how things sync up, the fact that they're not

watching Jerrica like a hawk. It's just, it's

very interesting to see the complexities of how

that conflict plays out too. Because, you know,

one of them is a hologram and one of them is

the real one and they're flipping and switching

and anyhow, it gets complex. It gets very complex

and you know, you would think that... Even though

half the time Eric doesn't care, I remember him

saying, you're not to leave out of my sight.

He says to Jerika, do not leave out of my sight,

and whatever else. And it's like, seriously?

Come on, dude. Get with it. That brings him joy,

torturing her. True, true. Well, he is a sadist,

so there is that. Let's get to the misfit moments

after this. misfit moments for Starbright Part

2. So between Battle of the Bands, Starbright

Part 1, and this episode, Stormer's character

shifts so much it's like someone trying to get

out of the mud. I think it's just because she

wants to be friends with everyone and so she

basically does whoever is in the room, you know?

She tries to please whoever's in the room, you

know? She's a people pleaser. Yeah. And she's

gonna make her life miserable. She makes her

life miserable for a while there. The more and

more I see of Eric Raymond, the more I want an

anvil to fall on him. I want to jump back to

1986, bring a copy of Anvilania from Animaniacs,

play that song, and have an anvil drop on Eric

Raymond's head. Yeah, that's funny. Um, Eric,

you ass. He should be in jail for endangering

the star like that. The point where he tells

Jim to go ahead and do the stunt. Well, apparently

he has really good lawyers, so. Well, yeah, but

like, seriously, hello, insurer. You know, we

were talking about earlier about contracts and

insurer. Insurance companies are not going to

insure a high, you know, a high profile star

to do a stunt. They're just not. No, they won't.

This is the thing is though, they were doing

it behind, they were doing it without permission.

They were, this is why the production crew was

not okay with it because there probably wasn't

any insurance and they, you know, went, hey,

not good. And Nicole's favorite misfit, the white

haired Vixen Roxy should be in jail after that

last stunt because technically, Technically it's

attempted murder period end of story no arguments

She brings excitement to the show by setting

off the explosions and attempting to kill Kimber,

okay I can see wanting to detain Jim in the hologram

see wanting to you know lock him in a closet

or some like cruel high school prank, but this

is attempted murder right It's all fair and lovable

in life. I love to tell you something. Roxy's

a smart one. She goes after the nice guy. Kimber

doesn't notice it at first. Kimber's going after

the jerk, you know? Roxy's like, hey, this guy's

a good guy. I kind of want him. Them going after

the wrong men has nothing to do with Roxy setting

off the explosions and nearly killing Kimber.

She thought it was funny. She has a problem.

She's psychotic. She needs to be in therapy.

She needs to be in Arkham Asylum is where she

needs to be. She's related to Michael Bay. I

swear. They don't know what hurt them. She's

his wife. We want to make this realistic. Yeah,

pretty much. Nicole Misfit Moments for part two.

moment that really stood out to me, and I know

this is gonna sound really creepy, but I'm gonna

go for it. At the beginning of the episode, they

talk about Bonnie being eight. At one episode,

she looks like she's a fully developed teenager.

And I was like, um, lay off the horribles or

something. That's the only thing that really

got to me. It's like, ah, no, she's not eight.

She's were like 12. That's like the only thing

that really kind of threw me off but hey i like

the roxy moment don't take that away man that's

the only thing that i really had a problem with

this episode she should be serving 25 years to

life for attempted murder this is what happens

when you have a cross between mean girls and

a psychotic oh god lindsey lohan is roxy oh god

See that that's the scary part You know what

you've actually put out You've already pointed

out the the ones that I would that I have on

my list to the Roxy put putting Kimber in danger

And then the Nick Nick running off and leaving

Kimber there too because that was really brilliant,

right? But I the two other ones that I put in

there. No the whole Hologram disappearing no

one's paying attention like that production the

production crew are they not paying attention

would they not have seen that but Yeah, well

They're hiding because they don't want to have

to deal with pizzazz I don't know. It's just

it. I just thought okay. No one's gonna see that

hologram despairing right in the middle of everything

I mean I I kind of think at this point in the

show, Jem and Jerika changing with synergy and

the holograms and everything else, it's kind

of like, you know, He -Man going or Prince Adam

going to Transformer to He -Man. It's like, hey,

all these people are over here. I can just walk

five feet behind this bush, have all this lightning

and everything else come up and no one's going

to notice. I mean, it's the same kind of thing.

I mean, they do at times they think. you know,

she's running behind something to hide, but that

all out where Jem was there and she turns back

into Jem and then Nick turns around, she's not

there. And then she's like, here I am. And he,

she's standing on the other side of him. And

he's like, I mean, there were other people like

standing behind Raymond far enough away that

you would think that maybe somebody might've

seen it. I don't know. Just the complexity of

it. Nick is too clueless to notice it. No, he's,

he's, you know, focused on himself. He's self

-centered guy. Um, the other thing that I want

to put out is like, okay, this has gotta be the

cheesiest movie ever. See, I want to see what

this movie is that because they got everything.

They got pirates. I've got, I don't know how

the continuity is working on this, but like,

are they just doing segments? What's going on

here? Because how are you working that into there?

Motorcycles and pirates. I want to see this really

I do I want to see how it pulls up pulls off

because like that looks like it doesn't even

fit And a couple of spandex suits watch Super

Power Rangers Super Megaforce power Power Ranger

pirates and motorcycles. There you go Alright,

we're gonna move on to the final episode star

bright part three after this You're making the

move Starbright part three aired Saturday July

19th 1986 We've had some stuff going on behind

the scenes here ladies and gentlemen, I cannot

believe this No, I know I know I'm not saying

I'm not saying that it's Yeah, we'll talk about

it. So for the plot during a dangerous motorcycle

scene for the movie Kimber is caught in the middle

of a series of explosions as Roxy tried to murder

her Infuriated Jim of the Holograms quits the

production permanently along with most of the

crew who witnessed the accident. Jim rallies

the crew to continue the movie, but with new

plot title Starbright, which the Misfits demanding

While the misfits demanding behavior finally

causes what remains of the original crew to walk

off the set, meanwhile a disguised Clash sneaks

into the set of Starbright to spy on the cast

and crew, only to be caught by Georgia, the makeup

artist who had recently quit the movie as well.

Clash steals the tape of Jem's accident, but

Jem and the cast manage to recover it after a

lengthy car chase. Starbright proves to be a

box office smash while the Misfits movie bombs

quickly. The hologram's first share in the box

office proceeds go to pay for Bonnie's surgery,

which is a complete success, and then Jerrica

takes Bonnie to see the movie. Yay! Yet again!

no singing in the opening credits it's just yep

it's this whole i don't know what it was i don't

know what it was with starbright it was no it

was instrumental in the part one it was the singing

the regular theme was back in part two and here

we're again just instrumental on on on the opening

theme again for this one um i like the plot i

think it's a good ending uh to this this three

-parter um Finally stuff happens to Eric Raymond

in the Misfits that it should have happened a

long time ago duly deserved Exactly Everything

that happens to him that this that the Misfits

do to him. It's like it's duly deserved Yep,

the songs featured in this one are putting it

all together Jim in the holograms. Welcome to

the jungle the Misfits and people who care Jim

in the holograms people who care has a subliminal

message in it, I believe. People who care a lot

with their hair. A lot. Hey, just goes to show

that Jim and the Holograms were up on the times,

man. It's relevant. You could watch it today

and still be like, oh, cool. This totally fits.

Yep. Do you want me to tell? Go ahead basically

at the very end of people who care Ashley grabs

one of the other starlight girls saying if gives

her a full -on kiss. It's like awesome So this

would technically be the first girl on girl kiss

in cartoon history now the first from what I

understand girl on girl kiss that I recall was

Deep Space Nine, one of the episodes where Jazia

Dax kisses another, well, you know, another host,

but it happens to be a girl. And that was kind

of controversial back in the day. And we already

know that Star Trek has been doing this for quite

a while because they were also the first racial

kiss. So it's not anything, you know, new, but

I liked it was pretty cool that they were doing

that. But hey, Guess what? Cartoon history was

made. Nobody saw it. We're breaking news 30 years

later. I know, right? It's only fitting that

we break this news to the Jam audience on the

30th anniversary of the show. Nicole, thoughts

on the plot for Starbright Part 3? I think it's

a very good third -parter. It shows all the consequences

of what Raymond and the Misfits came up to. And

good for Jim and the Holograms going out on their

own, doing things cheaper and better. That sounds

bad. I just whored out Jim and the Holograms.

Shoes String Budget, but you know what? Shoes

String Budget movies are not necessarily bad.

You know, there was the whole, what was it? Look

at Paranormal Activity. It cost $20 ,000. Yeah,

there was that. And then there was also the -

There's the five sequels after the first project.

Yeah. Yeah, so it's it's not necessarily a bad

thing, but yeah And you said that Nicole the

only thing I can think of is the bit with Jeff

Dunham and sweet daddy D So what if I tell you

that I you know go out and do what I do just

because I enjoy it Well, then you the dumb hoe

It's a really good this is a really well put

together three -parter Absolutely, it's an hour

movie and There's really no lagging bits and

the third part just wraps it up really nicely

Mm -hmm except for a Roxy not going to jail.

Yeah Lawyers Something like that, um Amy thoughts

on the plot I thought they did a really good

job with this. Um, and we just, everything that

was going on, you knew everything was good. It

was the sinking ship, the fact that they quit

and then everybody else quit. Cause you know,

the production crew has been watching this crap.

The ship start sinking from the very beginning.

You know, they had the mumblings of them in the

background and, and, you know, the Misfits were

already trying to set things up with them, trying

to judge. Jim and the holograms and the final

lady finally quits in this episode. So it was

like, you know, everybody finally turns, you

know, a 360 and realize, or not a 360, but a

180. And they go over and help out gem and all

them and Hey, they do it for free because I'd

rather work for free than work for the misfits.

And right. So yeah, they did a good, it was a

good job. And of course everything turns out

and they take a risk. they put the starlight

uh foundation the or the starlight house up for

bonnie's um surgery but it turns out that you

know hey there are movies of total success and

they don't have to lose anything so there you

go yay all right we're gonna get to the hologram

moments So for hologram moments, what do you

got, Amy? I had to put in here, Jeff saving Kimber,

even though Kimber was like, you know, completely

giving the cold shoulder, even though he was

like, hey, Kimber. Yeah, that I had put in here.

I think she falls in love with them. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. That's a misfit moment, Kimber. She would

have thought he was a good guy beforehand. I

just love the fact because he's like picks her

up and walks away. And then Aja, this is another

hologram moment. She takes the helmet and slams

it into Nick's gut. That was my number one hologram

moment. pretty much put it to him. I'm like,

yeah. She can't drive, but she has her moments

and you know, there's a lot of good ones. She

makes up for it. Yeah. That's probably my favorite

hologram moment. I love the fact that Pazazz

gets dropped in the water and gets all wet. That

was brilliant. Of course she's like, she's like

freaking out and not freaking out, but she's

about to have a tantrum, basically. And I was

worried for Nick whether or not he was actually

going to get his butt kicked by her. I don't

think I could ever be worried for Nick about

anything. Yeah, he's a little self -centered,

but still. He dropped pizzazz, which is a bad

thing. She's going to mess his face up. He'll

never be able to work again. I love the fact

that Jem upstages Nick at the very end when he's

like, hey, I'm here. And you know, she's like,

yeah, you have to, oh, sure. We can give you

a bit roll and you can work for free. He's like,

what? And then I love the fact that the Producers

Guild comes in and shuts down the Misfit movie.

That just hip hip, hooray. I still want to see

the movie. See how bad it was. Yeah, yeah. Me

too. I'd love to see it. But yeah, don't want

to pay for it. I wouldn't pay to watch it. No,

no, no. I'd have to have to see it for free.

Yeah. For me You know We can make all the you

know insults or anything else to Rio for being

a complete douchebag when it comes to Jerrica

and Jim But at least he's not confused when he

stands up to Raymond I'll say one thing for pizzazz

when she wants something she really wants something

she because she threatens to replace Eric. Oh,

yeah But she's so sweet about it. Go get her.

Go get her. Look. She's so sweet about it. Well,

I can replace you too. Yeah. Yay, another chase.

We finally have another chase scene. Pazez's

scream would wake the dead. Oh my god. Jim plays

herself while Rio plays Johnny. Like, really?

They couldn't? I mean, I know it's the Jem movie,

and I know Jem is technically just a hologram,

and it's really Jerrica, but it's like, seriously,

they couldn't come up with a better character

name for her? This is what brings Rio and Jem

together. It's the Johnny Boyfriend. Come on!

The roses are my favorite. Oh my god. I cannot

believe you just brought that cracker into this

show. Hey, hey, it's in the show, man. I'm just,

you know, plugging it. I still, I still love

how they work the videos into the overall rest

of the story in the cartoon. Cause some of it,

it's, it's some of the best visual montage to,

to work them in as part of the plot and such

great writing. I absolutely love that, um, Eric

didn't get hit in the head with an anvil. He

didn't see that producers guilt thing coming.

Nope, not at all. What about you Nicole? What'd

you like about this one? Oh, let's see. Oh, um,

Amy was telling me when Aja pretty much took

the helmet and sho - I love that moment because

Aja's probably my favorite hologram. Even though

she can't drive. I really did like the part where

they do over Clash. I love a makeover, even in

a cartoon. Come on, I'm a sucker for it. No,

they did a good job because she did not look

like Clash, which is why they weren't able to

recognize her when she came in there. I'm a friend

of a friend of Jem's. Yeah, they just let her

in. But she still has the same face and everything,

but she looks really good. I thought they did

a good job. Again, no one noticed that she was

on the set still. But that's okay. It's clashed.

It was all volunteer, you know? Yeah. I like

how, oh crap, not Nick, the other guy, the good

guy. Jeff. Jeff. I like how he gives acting lessons

to Rio. I'm just like, maybe you should have

spent more than just five minutes though, Rio.

Really? I did enjoy that little bit. I thought

that was really cute. So yeah, I think you guys

got everything else, though. All right. We're

going to head to Misfit moments in a minute.

For misfit moments, I actually only have two.

Those misfits, they ruin everything, even for

themselves. They have to live up to their name.

Oh, come on. They have to want nice things in

life, regardless of their methods of trying to

get them. Zazz already has nice things. Daddy

pays for everything. Oh, Lord. I hope we move

away from all these daddy issues as this series

goes on. I noticed in the scene where Pizzaz

is jumping up and down because people are leaving

the Misfit movie to go to the Gem movie, her

ankle thing is on the left leg this time and

there's nothing on her right leg. I don't know

why I notice it, but that fashion just... Ugh.

You know, people say parachute pants are bad.

I'm sorry. What Pazez wears on her legs half

the time is horrid. I'd rather see her in parachute

pants, actually. She's trying to start her own

fad. Failing miserably. Nicole, what did you

have for misfit moments for part three? I will

do a fashion faux pas, too. Rio's sleeveless

shirt is a big no -no, okay? What? Oh my Lanta,

that was just horrible. I'm just like, nope.

Not gonna happen. Also, Asja again, almost getting

them into a car wreck. But is this the fourth

time in seven episodes, six episodes? Girl needs

some driving lessons, man. Defensive driving

lessons. Do the other three not know how to drive?

Really? I don't know. You guys have seen Gone

In 60 Seconds, right? Yeah. Aja is the chick

that Chi McBride is trying to teach to drive.

The sad thing is I'm not trying to be insensitive

here, but they're both Chinese women. You can

send hate mail, too. You're doing my good, gmail

.com. All right, anything else, Nicole? No, those

were like, wait. And then, of course, I really

did not care for Nick trying to kiss his way

back onto Jem's set. I was really like, really?

Really? You're going to be that kind of a douchebag?

Really? Yeah, that made me ill. Yeah, I agree.

And the whole time we were the whole time I was

watching the Street Fighter I'm like, oh Nicole's

gonna be really happy. There's another man in

Jim's life that isn't purple -haired So Nicole's

gonna be ecstatic about this and then turns out

to be the biggest douchebag in Hollywood. He

is a big douchebag. She just needs to dump Rio.

That's it. She needs to go for Riot, right? Riot's

a hottie. Riot's a hottie man. Right is the digivolve

version of Nick He's a lot she cares a little

bit more about right than she does Nick It has

some feelings for more than just him He's just

conceded right yeah Yeah, I know I'm jumping

ahead I've been dying to say his name just because

goodness. Come on, it's Townsend Coleman, come

on. That's true. Awesome songs. What about you,

Amy? What didn't you like about part three? Um,

I, there was a lot that I liked about it. So

I, you've brought up a couple things that, that

I didn't just didn't even. mentioned, but you

get, you know, there you go. Uh, but I did want

to put on here that pizzazz slamming the guitar

on stage when she finds out about Clash's failure

and she's in front of all those people and she

doesn't care. She just slams it down. And I was

like, Oh my gosh, talk about tantrum, but she's

a rocker. You know, that's what it started. And

you're right. That's probably what started it

all. Hey, you know, they did it in a cartoon

so I can do it on stage. Woo. Brilliant. Like

I said, this show is really hip and happening.

They broke down all the walls way before everybody

And now, back to Jam. Alright, we are back here

on Showtime Synergy and it is time to rate the

three -parter. Amy, what are you gonna give it?

I'm gonna give it a solid four. I really like

this episode. I think they did a really good

job with it. You know, there was a plot, there

was a subplot, the conflicts were great. They...

Character building, I mean, yeah. They did a

good job. This is, this is a very good standard

to keep for the rest of the show with star bright.

So yeah, total solid for Nicole. I would have

to agree with that solid for there's, I mean,

there was adventure around every little corner.

There's some things that are just like, really

not. That probably wouldn't happen in real life,

but it's good for the show. There are douchebags

like Nick out there, but I still find it hard

to believe that, yeah, like you said, Roxy didn't

get arrested for attempting murder. Actually,

I'm going to change my score to four and a half

because this this this episode broke walls. And

way before it's time, so you know, for being

so hip and happening, I'm gonna give it a four

and a half. Nice, nice. No, I really did like

this. I just love how horrible the misfits are

and it just brings happiness to me. I know you're

not supposed to root for the bad guys, but I

do. They make it happen. There's nothing wrong

with that. There are girls out there that do

that and there's nothing wrong with that. Empower

you, woo! You know, at Aja, she has her moment

too. Besides her bad driving. She's probably

my favorite hologram, so... No, I'd give it a

solid four. I'm in the same boat. Even though

I had a few nitpicks with it overall, like Amy

said, the story is like... Bing -bam -boom very

well structured, you know, it hits all the beats

doesn't forget any parts of the story Absolutely

amazing. So I'm gonna give it a four What do

we think of the series so far after eight episodes

Amy? Well, I will tell you what I thought as

a kid I was hooked As an adult I'm like, you

know, it's good to go back and Rediscover how

awesome it is. So I would let my daughter if

I had a daughter, you know Watch it even now.

Why not? It's it's good. They did a good job

with it even after you know Over the years, it's

it's still something to go back and it's definitely

worthy of watching again and again You know for

me eight episodes in at this point They've done

nothing majorly offensive for me to say screw

this show. I'm done Well, maybe you know pizzazz

going good daddy I can easily fast forward through

that What type of person she is yeah It's better

to see stuff like that and to see character in

a cartoon character than to see Scott and T -Bob

from M .A .S .T. doing the stupidest things on

earth. This is why I think that this show, Jim,

the holograms did not need PSA is because they

work the lessons into the stories without really

making, like I said in the first episode of the

podcast, they work lessons into these, these

episodes without really, you know, making you

even think about being need to be taught a lesson.

That's they don't do like you said like, you

know, and that's the you know, knowing is half

the battle They don't do that. But like they

show a really good, you know way of how even

Consequences affect. I mean the Misfits are their

own worst enemy. They really are They probably

would be they would probably be much more popular

if they took off, you know If they if they were

doing other things that weren't, you know, they

weren't fighting against themselves. Because

I mean, think about it, pizzazz is a really incredibly

rich girl. And the things that you learn about

Roxy, um, she's had really hard time in her life,

but she's pulled herself out of it. I mean, they

they're all very strong women, even regardless

of what side you're on. They're all strong women

in one way or another. I mean, we find out about

the holograms are all all of the holograms are

orphans. I mean, Every single one of the girls,

it seems like to me, has come from a really bad

situation and have become musicians. They're

being able to make a living, support themselves.

They're not out on the street doing nothing.

So it's just two different points of view and

consequences of the Misfits' actions is that

they're their own worst enemy. So, you know,

if anything, I really like the fact that that

it shows kind of in a way, you know, I mean,

all of that, even Stormer is from a rich background.

So it's like, it just goes to show that, you

know, consequences of their actions, you know,

they could probably have a little bit easier

life if they chose a few different choices. But

you know, They still continue. It doesn't make

them fail. They're still the misfits They still

continue to go after gem in the holograms and

try to steal their thunder and I'm like Wayne

Well, why don't you make your own thunder? Why

you always making theirs? Yeah, what about you

Nicole? You know after just these two what like

quote -unquote movie type It still holds up.

After 30 years, it's still a good story. Like

I said, there's some kind of fashion issues,

but it was the 80s. It's the 80s, yeah. But the

storyline is really good, and you could apply

it for today, and you still get involved, and

it's still entertaining. In a sense, it's even

historical. Yeah, kind of, yeah. I mean, I have

as much enthusiasm rewatching it as an adult

as I did as a child. And I think that goes to

say something. I mean, my mom would never have

watched this with me. She hates animation anyways.

But I could see a lot of parents and kids watching

this together, you know? And you don't have to

be a girl either. And you don't even have to

be a girl to enjoy it either. Although I do have

to say some of the gowns are gorgeous. I'm like,

oh gosh I'm like, hey, I really like that. And

then there's some pattern no -nos that you're

like, oh jeez. Yeah. Wow. Shoulder pads. That

was definitely an 80s thing. That was a tread

that I was glad to go. The suits, the suits in

this, in this, this. episodes, especially I noticed

the suits, the pant suits, and I'm like going,

Oh my gosh, my mom had something similar to that.

Oh, wow. Yeah, I mean, I'm still loving it. I'm

still tons of adventures. You know, I just love

it. A lot of fun. What about you, Mike? You know,

As a guy. As a guy, yeah. Have you evolved with

a show that's pretty much geared towards girls?

Have you joined the herd? I keep telling you

it is not just geared towards girls. I know that.

If it was just geared towards girls - There's

a lot of estrogen in this episode, in this series,

though. There really is. No, there is. I'm not

gonna deny that, but I'm saying, like, you know,

this isn't My Little Pony Generation 1, where

everything's hearts, stars, and rainbows. See?

Wait! I've got to go back and watch the first

two episodes then because those are some dark

episodes. That is one thing. The only way the

Geekcast Radio Network will ever have a My Little

Pony podcast on it is if someone else is doing

all the work. No way in hell. Oh, really? That's

a challenge. No way in hell I am doing a My Little

Pony podcast. They do genetic testing in the

very first episode where they steal ponies and

they turn them into dragons. It's horrible. How

do you get a dragon? I don't even want to know.

I don't even want to know. That's why you got

to go watch it. No. You turned a little pony

into a dark demon dragon that pulls a chariot

of hell. I am not kidding. I have a problem with

that because dragons are demonized, man. Dragons

are awesome. They also have Spike, who's a baby

dragon. Dragon pride! Oh, god. Now all I can

think of is, uh, lizard, lizard, I don't do that.

You know, dragon, dragon, I don't do that tongue

thing. Eddie Murphy and Mulan. Oh, god. Oh, yeah.

I don't do that thing. We're already hijacking

this episode. We're so far, so far off the rails

here. All right, you know. Overall, eight episodes

in, I'm still loving the show. Like I said before,

there's a few little nitpicks here and there.

The stories have all been very solid. I think

from here on out, up till we get to the Music

Awards two -parter, it doesn't necessarily go

to episode of the week or villain of the week,

because the Misfits are always going to be the

villains, but... There are a couple of plots

coming up is like really seriously. This is what

they were going for. It's not bad. It just There's

just some of the locations that they go to for

some of the story just kind of it's kind of iffy

for me But overall after eight episodes, I'm

still loving it. You know all the car chases

all the sneaking around You know Jericho's consistently

having to find new ways to hide the secret from

Rio. If she would just tell him, it would be

easier. It would be so much easier. Yes, but

then there would be so much conflict. And to

be honest, I mean, as much as it kind of is annoying

to see Rio go back and forth like that, it does

create really good conflict. I mean, there's

all... It does. It does. And I would rather have

that than not have that. It creates a passion

that I love to hate the guy. Okay? Well, you

know, here's the thing that I just thought of.

Technically, even though Jim is a hologram, technically

Jerrica is cosplaying for him every single day.

Creepy. Alright. I mean, seriously, that's kind

of creepy when you think about it because she

makes him jealous several times. Yeah, that's

true. I think she enjoys playing this game. Thank
