About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Doug Able discuss the pilot episode of ABC's Forever, a drama about an immortal medical examiner in New York City working to uncover the source of his curse. The episode covers the central premise, the cast including Ioan Gruffudd, Alana De La Garza, and Judd Hirsch, and early impressions of how the show blends procedural elements with mystery mythology. A significant plot twist involving a character's hidden past is revealed and discussed. The episode also includes a news segment covering updates on Limitless, The Flash (including casting news for Linda Park), Red Band Society, and various network renewals and cancellations.

and joining me again is Doug Able from Talking

About My Generation. Hello, sir. Hello, sir.

How are you? I am doing great. That's good. Remote

Control will be about the current TV generation

in this latest pilot premiere episode. We're

taking a look at a new show from ABC entitled

Forever. But before we get too far into the stage

dressing, let's head over to a news break. We'll

be back after the news. Hello TV fanatics and

welcome to... Remote Controls news segment with

myself and TFG1 Mike. Yes, that's right. And

this week we have yet another caffeine update

from Miss Kate Welch over at the Tillavixson

.com. So we're going to be getting into that.

Had you seen any TV news this week while you

were on Twitter, Facebook, any of that kind of

things this past week that you're interested

in? I see so much of it that I know that Bradley

Cooper's making a version of his film Limitless

into a TV show. interesting which I enjoyed the

movie I'm not quite sure how you can drag that

between an entire series mmm yeah I'm not sure

either unless you end up with an army of limitless

people yeah so basically they're gonna turn it

into what would happen if the oh god what was

that stupid movie with with Darth Vader jumper

they're gonna turn it into a TV series similar

to jumper Yeah, all right there is there is though

Jay Leno returning to the Tonight Show Seriously

not actually returning. He's gonna be a guest.

Oh I just I purposely dragged that out see if

you You know what honestly I'd probably watch

the Tonight Show more than I do now if he came

back to host it again I didn't like Leno is the

host I actually like really like Jimmy Fallon

He's Probably the best late night talk show host

now. I think we've talked about this before maybe

off air, but I I'm really interested to see what

Colbert adds to the late show when he takes over

for Letterman but Late night TV and me right

now in this day and age. I miss Johnny Carson.

Well, I miss I miss Jay Leno Leno was kind of

bland other than his segments and Fallon kind

of he's a fanboy of everybody. So it's kind of

it's nice to see somebody normal Hosting it not

just your typical host and he does kind of remind

me of Carson in some ways just because of how

he presents himself and yeah he's more enthusiastic

and he's not talking in a kind of calm voice

or anything but uh he uh I think that he holds

his own I guess I preferred Jimmy when he was

doing movies I really did he was terrible at

movies he was pretty good in fever pitch and

taxi fever pitch he was good don't even say I'm

not gonna argue Texas shit. I like that. I like

taxi on a hole though. I don't like it just because

I am Alright, so to the TV news picked up for

full seasons are the mysteries of Laura on NBC

Madam Secretary on CBS Stalker and scorpion along

with NCIS New Orleans on CBS as well Renewed

is Cedar Cove cancel is a to Z bad judge and

the divide bad judge on NBC was kind of funny,

but It was just kind of weird, too, at the same

time. So what you're telling me is it's bad comedy?

Not necessarily. I just don't... NBC has this

knack of attempting to get their, you know, must

-see Thursday night back every now and then,

and they'll put comedies like this on, and they

just don't work. So the three news stories Steve

and I are going to be talking about this week

are one of them is interesting to me because

it's About one of the shows that I love watching

which is red band society, which you would have

heard our episode on that last week You're on

remote control, but apparently the Disney Channel

star from shake it up Bella Thorne is set to

stir up love triangle drama on red band society

So she has been kidding me on red band for a

while coming up. I think it's interesting It's

gonna be what's most interesting to me some seeing

some of these Disney Channel stars now seeing

what they do after they've been on the Disney

Channel Which is getting into trouble? Well,

not all of them. I know you're not thrilled about

this multiple genre split off of an original

show, but apparently CSI Cyber is adding Hailey

Kiyoko. Hailey Kiyoko is also a Disney Channel

star. She wasn't as big as Bella Thorne, but

that's where I know her from. Who was she? She

was Stella in the Lemonade Mouth movie, and she

was various other characters and various other

shows on the Disney Channel over the last couple

of years. She's also in the Fosters on ABC Family.

Yeah, I don't watch that. So she's going to be

joining the cast. So there's that. And the final

news story is the Flash enlists Vampire Diaries

alum as key DC Comics character. Okay, the Vampire

Diaries and Star -Crossed alum. Malise Jow has

been tapped to recur and play pivotal DC Comics

character Linda Park. The Hollywood Reporter

has learned the character is described as a quick

-witted reporter for the Central City Picture

News. She befriends Iris, played by Candice Patton,

while at work and helps her navigate the fast

-paced world of journalism. When she meets Barry

Allen, played by Grant Gustin, at a local bar,

the two hit it off. The character will first

appear in episode 112. um they've set barry up

to be kind of a geeky player at this point because

he's got this you know star cross lovers syndrome

for iris he's gonna crush on felicity and now

they're bringing in this girl seriously i mean

he it's like they're trying to turn barry allen

into a pimp no i don't know it just and actually

It him and Felicity are technically very similar,

but he actually likes his basically quasi Stepsister

mm -hmm or adoptive sister or whatever yeah,

so yeah it this kind of makes more sense Even

though it's a Wally West reference yeah, yeah,

I don't know Just wish with the flash because

I since we did our remote control pilot premiere

episode for the flash I have been continuing

to watch it, and I'm still enjoying the show

I just wish that they and I know Felicity's over

on arrow, but I just think out of between her

and Iris She and Barry make a better couple overall

in my personal opinion Yep. So in this episode

of Remote Control, we're going to get to Doug

Able and I talking about ABC's new show, Forever,

starring Mr. Fantastic, Ian Gruffudd, or whatever

the hell the hell you say his name is. So we're

going to get to that right now. My name is Henry

Morgan. My life is just like yours, except for

one small difference. It never ends. Forgive

me, but even for a man who died, you look like

crap. I think it's safe to say that I've yet

to figure out what the point of life is. Mine,

anyway. Subway conductor. Early diagnosis. Heart

attack. Lucky bastard. Detective Joe Martinez.

Foaming on the lungs. I believe this man was

poisoned. It's crazy, actually. Sometimes he

doesn't even need to open them up to tell how

they died. It's kind of awesome. And kind of

creepy. You now have 15 homicides on your hands

and a mass murderer to catch. Dr. Henry Morgan.

You know what his last gig was before this? Grave

Digger. Follow that guy with a pocket watch.

Are you isolating yourself from the world? You

might not be able to die, but you haven't lived

for a very long time. Is this Henry Morgan? Who

is this? You can't imagine how long I have been

looking for someone like you. So? What's your

story? There's something you're not telling me.

He made the toxin soluble so it could be able.

The ventilation system is on the roof. Detective!

I've spent my entire life studying the human

body and I can say with certainty that what keeps

us alive is hope. Alright folks, it's time to

stage the dress for or dress the stage for the

stage dressing for ABC's forever It debuted this

year 2014. It is a one -hour show on ABC Obviously

on iTunes anywhere else DVD. It's gonna be 42

43 minute show without commercials We are currently

in season 1 of forever. Not sure if it's going

to last But It's interesting to this point The

basic overall description for it is a 200 year

old man works in the New York City more and trying

to find a key to unlock the curse of his immortality

What did you first think of when you heard about

this show? I I was kind of thinking that it was

gonna be something like forever night from CBS

from way back or that it was gonna be like New

Amsterdam And to be honest so far. I'm not too

disappointed in that that Avenue what I was thinking

it's The best way I can describe it to people

who haven't seen it yet is it's unbreakable meets

Sherlock is probably the best way to put it I

Would say it's unbreakable meets sleepy hollow

because as soon as I saw the flashback scene

We'll talk about that here in a little bit, but

as soon as I saw the flashback scene of how dr.

Henry Morgan came to be I thought, oh, it's Ichabod

Train. Great. Yeah. I love the first season of

Fox's Sleepy Hollow and I'm sure we'll be doing

a season pass episode on that here in remote

control. At some point, I don't know when, but

that was the first thing I kind of thought of

when I saw that flashback. I'm like, wait, wait,

wait, is ABC trying to pull a fox and try to

do this? But yeah, you're right, it's kind of

an unbreakable thing where Dr. Henry Morgan...

is basically cursed with immortality he can die

many many many different ways but all the every

time he he comes back to life in either the Hudson

or the East River in New York City naked every

single time don't know why but naked and you

know as the the the pilot goes along come to

find out he has this mystery collar who and by

the end of the episode we find out has the same

problem as him. To get to the casting couch here

we have Ion Gruffudd plays Dr. Henry Morgan.

Most people remember him as Mr. Fantastic from

the Tim Story Fantastic Four films from Marvel.

He also starred as as Andrew in CW's very short

-lived series Ringer with Sarah Michelle Geller.

We have Miss Law and Order herself, Alana De

La Garza, as Detective Joe Martinez. I love her.

I love Alana De La Garza. She's an amazing actress.

When she joined the Law and Order cast, I was

like, oh wow, she's awesome. Absolutely love

her. We have Joel David Moore as Lucas Wayne.

We have Donnie Kiss Schwarz as Detective Hanson.

We have Barbara Eve Harris as Lieutenant Marsha

Rourke. We have Dear John himself, Mr. Judd Hirsch

as Abe. Everybody loves Judd Hirsch. Oh, yeah.

If you don't love Judd Hirsch, there's something

wrong with you. There really really is he also

obviously is from taxi More recently in the last

Five to ten years he was in Numbers from CBS.

I believe it was a CBS show. Yeah, he was Crap

was his name God he was david's dad in uh...

james jeff goldblum's dad in independence day

yes and he has all of my favorite lines that

movie he sits there he starts talking about he

tells them all you need is love yeah john lennon

nice man you know smart man shot you know shot

dead very sad uh... i mean To this day, I still

remember that very short -lived 1988 to 1992

series entitled Dear John. Every time I think

of Judd Hirsch, outside of thinking about Numbers

and Independence Day, that's where I remember

him from. Sure, I remember him from Taxi, but,

you know, like Dear John, for as short of a time

period it had, was really, really amazing. um

so you got him in this uh let's see who else

um you've got uh you got him you got mckenzie

mousy as as abigail who plays uh henry's wife

um and i mean there's you've got jack coning

as the captain wow you've got oh I thought I

thought that said Lou Ferrigno for a minute oh

my god Lou Ferguson is one of the old African

slaves what do you think of the casting for this

show I'm kind of liking it it's Was a little

worried when I saw mr. Fantastic going to be

the main character this month all I could think

was Because I didn't care for him all that much

in the Fantastic Four movies so I was kind of

like this is gonna fall flat and Then he's then

he's in this and I'm going I actually like him

in this You know, he plays really well him and

of course Joel David Moore. I Love Joel David

Moore He was I thought he was absolutely hilarious

and dodgeball and for him to come in and be in

this movie here Being this series here. It was

just like okay. He's gonna work as being the

goofy little you know co medical examiner And

I think he's gonna play a really nice bit role

in this series if it continues Yeah, I mean he

probably is and My god he wasn't dodgeball holy

crap Wow God when did that movie come out? God

it was years and years ago wasn't it was like

2000 2004 yeah 2004 Oh my god he was Owen. Oh,

yeah, that's right. Oh is that the kid? No, that

was Justin. I was thinking that was, um, but

yeah. No, absolutely. Yeah. I mean, he, he's

going to play an interesting backup role to,

um, to, to Dr. Henry Morgan. Um, because Morgan

is just so, he's so narrow -sighted on his goal.

Like he has no time for going to you know, coffee

and sports and like all this and all that and

everything else. For me, the cast, the cast really

is at this point, Gruffudd, Garza and Hirsch.

Yeah, it's the it's the three of them is really

what what digs me into this show. Like I said,

I still think she's hot. She's an amazing actress.

I just I like everything about her when she plays

in things like this And she does the role very

very well. Yeah now ABC did do a two night premiere

for this To this point as of this episode. We've

only seen the pilot episodes, so we will only

be commenting on the pilot And again, kind of

getting into jumping or not jumping the shark.

The plot of episode one is Henry Morgan is an

immortal, searches for the man who caused a subway

train accident. Meanwhile, a mysterious call

informs Henry that someone knows his secret.

Dun dun dun. For me, for this... For this pilot,

I found it amazingly interesting to make a Marvel

DC reference. Mr. Fantastic is now Dr. Death.

Or Dr. Destiny, or whatever you want to call

him. You know, the mystery caller on the line.

And at first, I thought it was the villain of

the episode. I really did. I thought it was...

I really, really did. But that's going to add

a whole new level to this show. I wrote down

that, you know, the whole train accident thing

when the police were in there, I'm like, a true

mystery, not even Mystery Inc. could solve this

one. Oh, because it's not just old man withers

in the corner hiding under a mask. Right. I love

Hirsch and Gruffa together as actors. They play

off each other so well in this series Yes, and

we aren't even to the point where they reveal

something that I never Never saw coming. I'll

get to that in a little bit, but I never saw

that coming And Alana just yum Yeah, I will give

you that I You know, I kept thinking when I saw

her I was like at first I thought holy shit You

know, you could slice bread with those cheekbones

that she's got but then at the same time I'm

like Damn, she looks good. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely

I Love how when they get to cuz dirt during the

episode we find out that We find out that the

trick is the the train conductor was poisoned

and Henry takes some of his blood and as we've

already mentioned Henry can die any number of

ways, but he will always come back to life and

He says I love the line. He says wouldn't it

be ironic if this time I actually die? Yes, it's

like calling Alanis Morissette anybody anybody

Good I was just gonna say this I like the show

I like how you start seeing a lot of the little

aspects of it I mean, it's Then the pluses and

the negatives of this I'm gonna say this it's

kind of all -in -one for me in that You see him

kind of doing the whole Sherlock Holmes type

of thing where he starts looking at somebody

You know and he like the woman on the subway

at the very beginning you see him and all of

a sudden he starts speaking to Russian tour and

I'm kind of like while this guy is pretty cultured

he knows russian and then she can look at those

week how did you know i was russian all you know

you have been a chocolate on your lip and you

know that i saw the russian chocolate in your

bag well yet at first i thought it was really

creepy i thought he was stalking all these people

and everything else and then yes they go to explain

it and i'm like okay that works for me yeah it

would be a put together well i mean it was it's

It's a plus in the fact that you start to see

him and how they're putting it together, but

at the same time I'm kind of like We already

have two Sherlock shows out there. Do we really

need a third one? That's kind of the feeling

I'm getting and it's not a bad thing Maybe ABC

will kind of take a different route with this

and I'm kind of hoping that they will I don't

know I don't know I mean I think it's gonna be

more of an unbreakable thing where they have

to eventually find this guy this mystery caller

yeah if the episodes start going into villain

of the week and they turned it into they have

to figure out what's going on I so far because

I don't I don't watch the show I don't watch

elementary on CBS I don't watch the BBC show

the only British shows that I can watch at this

point and it's not because I don't like I guess

it is because I don't like British television

but the only ones I really could ever watch are

Faulty Towers and Rising Dam. I just I'm not

into British television. It's just not my thing

So I don't mind the things but what I loved is

I loved how they went about Clearing him as a

suspect is the interrogation scene with him and

and and her Was simply amazing like he is pointing

her into the lake How could I have done this

when this this this and this happened or think

about? What would my motive be to do this that

and that and I absolutely love that that that

interrogation scene So we get to the point where

they're almost at the the poisoners place and

they actually get there and he comes in and they

have to hide and he sees them because they come

out and she says hey you're under arrest points

a gun at him he flings this poison at her it

hits her hand and henry's like no no no we can't

go after them we have to take care of this right

now you know okay so here's some ethanol put

that on it and then he lights her hand on fire

yes i thought that was amazing i loved that um

this show just keeps putting on the twist they

are still one step behind the guy absolutely

interesting and I honestly thought that when

they caught and killed the guy when Henry took

the guy off the roof, because we get to a climax

scene where he shoots her, shoots the cop, she's

laying there, shot on the ground. She thinks

she sees both of them go off and hit the cab,

which they do. She doesn't know that though,

because Henry plays it off. But I thought that

was going to be the climax of the show. And during

the flashback scene, we see Henry as a firefighter

medic kind of person and during World War two

of all places I Believe that was his wife. Wasn't

it? Yes, that was Abigail. Yeah, Abigail comes

up to him. This is like where they first meet

and She says this baby he Seems to be perfectly

healthy and we see a number on this kid's arm

And we flashed it today, and we see Abe. And

they show Abe's arm. And it's the same nut. Abe

is the baby. I was like, holy shit, I did not

see that coming. Yeah. Abe's been around. Yeah,

but it's like, oh my god, I so did not see that

coming. I absolutely love that. It doesn't really

explain in the beginning why these two guys have

the friendship that they have Yeah, until that

moment until you see that and you realize oh,

hey Even though Henry's gonna out look. Oh god.

Oh my god. I just I'm gonna make another analogy

and it's gonna kill me to make it Henry is Superman

and Abe is Batman Yeah Batman was born into Nazi

Germany. Oh my god Yeah, so overall absolutely

love the pilot Is there anything we we miss talking

about for the actual episode Not that I can think

of I mean you've covered the fact that we've

got the We've got the poison being used for the

subway We've got that they're trying to come

back and that same guy is trying to kill all

these people in Grand Central Station With poison

through the air conditioning vents That's really

about it. I mean, that's the only thing that

I can think of that we missed Right, and we still

have this mystery caller. Don't know who he is

or what's going on with him Just we know that

he is the same as as Abe or not Abe Henry I should

say yeah immortal and whatever else. The reason

why I made the Fox Sleepy Hollow reference is

because I'm wondering if this guy is tied to

Henry's past because if you look at Fox's Sleepy

Hollow show, Ichabod and the Horseman Their blood

is intermingled now. I don't know if this is

the same as that I'm thinking it isn't and I'm

hoping it isn't But that's what that's where

I kind of got the sleepy hollow aspect to it

So alright, so for the GCR in for the remote

control review For the rating scale zero to five

remotes. What are you gonna give it? I'm gonna

give it a four at this point only because I Don't

think it was that great because I was seeing

a lot of comparisons to other series already

Hmm. I think that it could definitely go the

of the other way and get a lot better as it goes

on But for this first episode I was like I was

kind of like It's hooked me and I'll keep watching

it, but it's not anything really special yet

I'm gonna keep watching and at least for the

first five or six episodes Obviously, we already

watched the first one I'll watch the second third

fourth fifth and sixth one and we may or may

not come back to this one ladies and gentlemen

I'm gonna give it a four as well. I Just think

that we need to know more like I mean that that

that ending You know with Abe's identity being

revealed that he was the baby from the flat I

mean that nearly blew my mind like I literally

said, oh my god, I cannot believe That's the

connection for Henry and Abe. Yeah. I mean I

like that Regardless because it is Alana de la

Garza. I do love her and I love her work I'm

not sure if I'm gonna stick with this one. Like

I said, I'm gonna give it to episode 6 and see

We may or may not do a finishing finale on this

one. I'm not sure Like I said last week with

red band society. We're most definitely doing

one for that, but this one I'm not too sure because

this could be a flop for ABC, but who knows yeah

I mean I'll keep on it because it looks interesting

enough to hold my interest, but it's It does

yeah, you know it's got to pick up here further

on that's all I can say Absolutely Alright, so

we're going to take a quick ad break. You're

going to hear some other ads from other podcasts

We are back here on remote control and it is

time to exit stage left. Do you have a final

thought for forever? I like it. I'm going to

keep watching it for a couple of episodes. Give

it the chance. See where it goes. Hopefully it's

not just, you know, an unbreakable story where

you've got him not being able to die, him being

reborn in the East River every time. I mean,

I'll keep watching it because it looks interesting.

But I don't see it last. You know, I don't know

if it's going to last. That's the problem. Yeah,

I'm not sure if this show is gonna last past

the first season. I really am not sure I mean

it is very interesting. It is still keeping my

interest mainly because of the Relationship and

the friendship that develops between Henry and

Joe Griffith and Dela Gars as characters and

Honestly, anything with Judd Hirsch is usually

fine for me to keep going forward, but I'm very

skeptical with the future of this show at this

point. Yeah. We hope you enjoyed this latest
