About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Doug Abel wrap up Red Band Society with a discussion of the show's two-hour series finale and full 13-episode run. They explore what made the medical drama work—its blend of comedy and drama, its focus on pediatric patients at Ocean Park Hospital, and Charlie's narration from his coma—while debating whether it maintained that balance throughout. The conversation covers standout character arcs like Kara's heart transplant and her mysterious loss of feeling afterward, Bella Thorne's guest appearance as the darker character Darby Shaw, Octavia Spencer's nuanced performance as Nurse Jackson, and the significance of the coma-zone sequences. They also discuss why the show struggled with ratings despite its quality, what a potential second season would have needed, and whether it deserved to be revived.

Listen in as the GCRN crew talks TV from 2000

to now. With pilot and season premiere episodes,

finishing finales and season passes as well.

Now get ready to change the channel with your

remote control, as we bring you the latest and

greatest in the world of television. All from

the Gatecast Radio Network, we are all remote

controlled. Neanderthals were considered adults

when they turned nine, which had to bite. But

today, you're considered an adult when you're

like in your 20s, which is probably bad for the

future of mankind, but lucky for me, because

I'm in a coma. Yeah, this is me talking to you

from a coma. Deal with it. Grab that remote control

because the GCRN's brand new TV podcast is here.

We are calling it remote control I'm your host

here to your mic and joining me this time is

Doug Abel from talking about my generation. Hello.

Hello, sir We are wrapping up the 2014 2015 television

season. We've already done Scorpion. We've done

the flash. We've done Gotham We've done I don't

even know what the hell else because I'm not

even looking at the website list And today we're

going to be talking about the two -hour season

finale or series finale, I should say, of Red

Band Society. We're also going to be talking

about the season overall and whether we liked

it or whether we didn't like it. I remember when,

I think it was you and I that did the pilot premiere

episode for this where we talked about just the

pilot and our overall, you know, first impressions

and everything and to kind of set the stage here

for the stage dressing for anyone that doesn't

know. Red Man Society debuted in 2014 and it

died in 2015 It was on Fox. It was a one -hour

show with commercials without it's anywhere between

42 and 48 minutes or something like that. Yeah

It had 13 total episodes and the basic premise

just to refresh everybody's memory is it takes

place at Ocean Park Hospital and it focuses on

the pediatric It's the pediatric intensive, not

therapy, what the hell am I trying to say here?

It's not trauma, it's basically sick kids, folks.

It's basically kids who have life -threatening

diseases. I, you know, you asked me off air about

another show and we'll talk about that next week,

how I was able to sit through all of it. And,

you know, I remember when Red Band came out,

I was praising this up and down. I wasn't sure

how far they were going to be able to take it.

But Red Band Society took the route almost of

an old NBC show from a few years ago called Awake.

I don't know if you've ever saw Awake. It was

with Jason Isaacs and... A few other people.

I like that one. Okay, I think it's on Netflix.

You might be able to watch all 13. Anyway, so

when Red Band came out, I'm like, ooh, I don't

know how long they can have this going or how

much they're going to do, but I'm really digging

this, because for me, medical dramas or specifically

hospital dramas, I was not an ER fan. I just

wasn't. Gray's Anatomy, I just don't care. You

didn't like Dr. Mimimi or Err? Oh my god. Well,

first of all, when did ER come out? Oh god, I

remember watching - The 90s, maybe? Yeah. Yeah,

see, I was too young. And yeah, I was just way

too god, you know. But anyway, so. Red Band Society

for me was the first hospital television show,

hospital drama show that I really, really dug

because it isn't just drama. It isn't just, you

know, divas all over the place and drama and

shit happening. It's also a lot of comedy and

it's really blended the comedy drama genre for

me. As the season, as the series progressed,

I liked it more and more and more because they

kept introducing new characters and They kept

evolving the whole, hey, Charlie's in a coma.

How are we going to be able to use Charlie this

week? And yeah, it's just all the stuff with

Charlie is just hilarious. It really is. Oh,

some of the stuff that you got with him, like

making comments. Really, there were there were

a lot of under the breath comments that we would

make them under under our breath type thing back

and forth. But he was out loud and we could hear

it, obviously, because he was narrating it. Yeah,

but it was just it was. So off the cuff and I

just I remember hearing something like really

and that was kind of the attitude that he had

was like Really? You're gonna do that. I Think

my favorite part was One of my favorite parts

of Charlie in the whole series was when Kara

first came in And he was laying out those farts

for her. Because she was just being a horrible,

horrible bitch to everybody. Oh, that was great.

Yeah, that was so hilarious. Well, as, because

I, because I, ladies and gentlemen, I basically.

Made Doug go bobbing for apples permanently.

I stuck his head under some water and made him

watch all 13 episodes again So he wouldn't know

what the hell was going on What are your impressions

overall of the series leading up to the finale?

Okay I'm gonna start by saying that at the start.

I was really invested in and I thought okay,

this would be great You know the wife and I sat

down and watched the first episode like hey,

this is going good And then we watched the second

episode and we kind of went, I don't know. And

I tried to keep with the show. I honestly did.

I had a hard time watching it. It wasn't until

you forced me to sit down and watch this that

I really watched it. And even then, I'm kind

of like, yeah, I kind of see why they canceled

it. There's only so much that you can get out

of some of these stories. And it started feeling

more and more like glee to me. I mean. Like just

kids who had problems, and it was kind of like

okay every kid has got this you know It's on

a very special episode type feeling is what I

was getting And I just okay next You know I mean

I can I can see where you're coming from I'm

gonna disagree, but I see where you're coming

from Because what I thought happened was as the

show progressed we you know you as i said in

the original pilot premier episode that we did

this is essentially a medical version of dead

poet society yeah because this the whole point

is you know these are all supposed to be friends

they're all pardon the pun banded together through

the red bands of the hospital and whatever else

and it's supposed to be one giant family and

it's you know all for one one for all whatever

else and As the episodes went along, there were

a couple that I didn't really care for, but overall,

they focused on one or two characters per episode

with Charlie being the go -between between everybody.

And, you know, as you already said, he's narrating

the whole thing. I enjoyed that. I, you know,

I just really, really enjoyed it. And I think

run around ratings time either november february

i don't know i'm not looking at the episode list

right off the top of my head but right around

when fox probably needed some ratings they brought

in for i think one or two episodes yeah bella

thorn from the disney channel now anyone that

has watched bella thorn on shake it up knows

that her character on there was very Peppy and

and upbeat and whatever else this character she

plays here Darby Shaw I think that was the character's

name she She's completely dark And it was kind

of refreshing because that's one of the things

about the Disney Channel When you see somebody

on there, and then you see them in something

later. You're like oh my god That was this person

from this and I'm not talking about People like

Miley Cyrus or anybody that's already super famous

something about people like Lee Thompson young

when he was alive when You know, I remember him

from the famous jet Jackson and the next thing

I saw him in was Rosalia Niles and I'm like,

hey, wait a second What's Silverstone doing on

on a show with Angie Harmon? Holy crap You know,

so I really dug that they brought Bella Thorne.

I thought that was really awesome That's just

the way dash is that's the way he rolls I don't

know. I just It could have been a lot better

in some respects Okay, yeah dashes dash was trying

to get something wherever he could just mm -hmm

You know his girlfriend that he had the CF girlfriend

Yeah, may yeah I mean just this show was just

so it honestly was so heartwarming because you

know most the time when you think about kids

in real life that are in these types of situations

and granted it's fox it's television they have

to put some sort of polish on it you know it's

one thing i'll give the creators and the writers

of this show they put some polish on on the on

the situations but they pretty much kept it real

when it came to the medical stuff as far as how

serious all like i mean leo one of the main characters

has fought, you know, fought and beat cancer

twice. Or, you know, you know what I mean? You

know, Dash has his respiratory problems. You

know, look at the narrator and the glue of the

whole group. Charlie's in a damn coma. He can't

do nothing. Yet he brings everybody together

almost every single episode. Yeah. Some of it,

though, was just kind of like Ruben Garcia coming

in. He was cool, but at the same time it was

kind of like some of the shit that he pulled

out here I'm gonna give you guys drugs You know

here go smoke some weed that I got you Here take

off in my my Mercedes that I have that there's

only five of in the world like this Well, he

was he wasn't He didn't Really go like he was

only in the first few episodes like Griffin Dunn

is rumored, you know He was an older hypochondria

patient, but they essentially dropped him after

a while Yeah, he was like most of the time in

the show folks. You'll see dr. McAndrew nurse

Brittany and nurse Jackson Sitting around talking

and reflecting and what else in the first couple

episodes Ruben was doing that with them and then

he just kind of disappeared he after the car

He went off to India and was leaving and it was

like, you know, I don't do goodbyes kid Yeah,

okay All we ever see them again Yeah, I I kept

trying to put my finger on it who the actor is

And it felt like I had seen him before, but looking

at his name now, I do not just recognize him

by name. I'd probably have to actually look at

his body of work to realize where I've seen the

guy before. But I remember when I first saw the

Reuben character, I was like, where have I seen

this guy before? He is so familiar. And I think

maybe it was because I was confusing him with

Robert Carradine. I don't know why. A little

bit, yeah. I kept thinking the same thing. I'm

like, where have I seen this guy before? Yeah,

just a little bit. So what was a few things that

you absolutely loved about the show? I know you've

got your negatives and some things you think

didn't work, but what were things that really

stood out for you? Well, I did like, towards

the end, that Jesus the cheerleader Kara Kara,

yes, this is horrible. You can tell I'm like

really good remembering the names for the show

Remember Dash because Dash was black and he was

trying to get on everything But no Kara was Kara

actually you you found out that she had this

enlarged heart she was She was basically this

major at you know major bitch And then she needed

a heart and it was kind of like I got to feel

like she was the tin man, you know She needed

a heart because she didn't have one and it worked

and it didn't it was really fucking obvious It

was the feeling that I got for it of you know,

hey, I'm gonna beat you over the head with this

girl needs a heart But I loved how she was because

even at the end there she actually became more

of a warm person Realized when that bee landed

on her chest Mm -hmm, and her mom was like freaking

out and she smacks the bee and kills the bee

It was it and she's like, oh my god. I didn't

even feel the bee sting me And I can't believe

I've been afraid of bees my entire life because

of this The only thing with Kara's storyline

that I dislike because they never explain it

they never even looked at is After she gets the

surgery and she gets hunters heart They never

explain why she basically feels nothing anymore

on the outside Yeah, I think well. I think it

might have had to do with Them cracking will

put her chest or something like that They may

have cut a nerve or something on her chest that

yes that could be I don't know all as I'm saying

is it wasn't Directly said in the show. They

just you know the whole last episode between

Kara and her mom They were just going back and

forth, but, oh my god, you spilled water on me,

but I can't feel it. And you would think that

if something like that happened, that Nurse Jackson

would be running in there immediately, or Brittany,

or Dr. McGinty, and that didn't happen. That's

really the only critique I have about the show,

is how they handled the closure for Kara's storyline.

Everything else though. I really enjoyed it.

It's a lot of fun I the one thing I wish they

had a little bit more of is more of Charlie and

the other Red Banders in the coma zone or whatever

the hell they called it the in between that was

always so awesome whenever And I remember how

devastating it was when one of them showed up

Because everybody else already said oh, yeah,

hey Charlie's here if you if you go under and

you know You're asleep. You'll go see Charlie

for a little while I remember that this was at

the point in the series when Charlie was about

to wake up and Some but I forget which character

it was went there to the coma zone. I'm just

gonna call it the coma zone. I don't care and

Charlie wasn't there and it was like this big

dramatic moment of oh my god. Where's Charlie

where? you know he's supposed to be here we we

know what's going on and then that's when charlie

woke up and everything else um i just really

dig this show i really do this is even even though

it didn't get a second season um and and you're

right i don't necessarily know how well or how

Progressive the show could have been I mean the

only way that it could have progressed is bringing

in new and different kids like they did the very

end of the series finale when they brought in

the new girl didn't really know anything about

her because obviously the show was ending but

that's really the only way I could see this show

if it ever got a season two is because you can't

just constantly focus on Emma's anorexia or Dash

is not being able to breathe or Leo's can you

It would have to be to evolve the show and the

characters you would have to bring in new patients

Yeah Yeah There are so many I don't I don't know

a lot of people that look at episode titles like

I do sometimes But out of the 13 episodes there

like four of them that are Just really really

funny like episode five is the one where um charlie's

backstory is explained in the storyline flashes

back to the night that he had gotten in a car

accident episode five is called so tell me what

you want what you really really want and i'm

like oh no no that's what the episode is called

i know i know i know I'm just saying that's what

the episode is called in like episode eight where

doctor in today finally comes to ocean park although

his approach to treatment is uh has dr mckendor

questioning that decision uh meanwhile emma dash

leo and jordy search for the perfect gift and

cara learns the truth about hunter from his sister

this episode is called get out of my dreams get

into my car and i'm like come on we need some

billy ocean up in the air um and then the last

episode the The second of the two -hour finale

is called Waiting for Superman. I know I've heard

a song called that before. I think it was on

Scrubs. The Scrubs theme song. Jesus. I know

because I actually have a copy of it. I have

an acoustic copy of the song and I can't... Jesus.

Who the hell does it? Know I know it was the

theme song to scrubs. I do know that It is dotry

according to iTunes It's off his baptized album,

maybe there's a I'm trying to see who else's

No, yeah, it's I don't know Anyway, you know

so I you know getting into the Let's get into

the some of the cast is like I mentioned to you

off air an episode of remote control that's gonna

be coming up our first pilot premiere for the

2015 -2016 season is USA Network's Mr. Robot

and in that show I know one actor out of the

entire cast Everybody else except for the one

actor is new to me and now I did when When you

listeners will hear this episode, I did look

up some of these people. And I do know some of

the stuff they've been on. But I don't remember

actually seeing any of them, anything that I've

actually paid attention to. So this one is kind

of like that too. Yeah. Some of them I've seen.

Some of them I haven't. You've got. Octavia Spencer,

everybody knows Octavia Spencer. She was in The

Help, she was in a few other things. She plays

Dina Jackson, the strict and seemingly scary

head nurse overseeing the pediatric facility.

What did you think of her portrayal of Nurse

Jackson? She had to be the mean and nasty nurse,

in a sense, but at the same time, like when Charlie,

when, who was it? I want to say it was Kara.

Somebody went under. Ended up in the in the zone

the coma zone and Charlie and Charlie says he

wants he's got a craving for pizza That was in

the pilot. Okay, that was in the pilot and then

at the end of it She sends all those pizzas to

the right because it when Kara comes out Kara

writes on the rights on Cardboard or whatever

else send pizza to room 5115 or whatever it is

and nurse Jackson has seen it calls in and sends

the pieces because she knows that I mean she's

been dealing with Charlie for god knows how long

we don't even know it's not even in his origin

story it's not really specifically stated how

long he's been there at the hospital yeah so

she knows and she did I mean yeah no she's not

just all scary but well and the fact that you

see like towards the end that she's really trying

to help out Charlie's dad and and get him in

there and she's trying to fight for Charlie There

was the episode where the the two guys from like

Public affairs whatever it is I forget what it

is health affairs or something yeah Some some

suit yeah, you know two suits and they're showing

up because they want to they want to send Charlie

home And she's just like you know he's not ready

to go and The whole changing his blood test out

it was like whoa Uh -huh, you know obviously

she has She has feelings for it in I Don't even

know if that's the right word for it. It's it's

she cares about these kids. Yeah You know she

even says in these series finale episodes. You

know yeah the Money's crappy and the hours are

crappy, but you know just seeing them You know

succeed and excel that is worth You know a hell

of a lot more than Making whatever million dollars

or whatever the funny thing is with our TV Spencer

the first thing and this is kind of sad The first

thing I ever saw her in was an episode of Wizards

of Waverly place. She plays dr. Evelini And she

has the best evil cackle laugh I have ever heard.

Oh, he does. Oh, man. That was so hilarious.

All right. Let's see here. We also have Dave

Annabelle as Dr. Adam McAndrew. He has been in

a number of things. Let's see. I mean, he really.

Hasn't been in all he's been a number of things,

but he hasn't been in a whole lot his actual

debut According to Wikipedia was 2002 third watch

um He was in Little Black Book from 2004 he was

in Brothers and Sisters for he was in he was

the main cast of Brothers and Sisters for 106

episodes from 2006 to 2011 he was in the other

short -lived NBC series 666 Park Avenue he was

in Ben and Kate and apparently an upcoming series

he's gonna be in is called Heartbreaker I liked

him As as dr. McAndrew, I thought it was I thought

he was a pretty good guy But I had One issue

with the writers naming him. Mm -hmm. They went

ahead and named him McAndrew and Screamed out

of my head was they're copying Grey's Anatomy.

Yeah Make dreamy or McSteamy whatever the hell

his name is. Yeah, but I thought I'm like Really

really you guys are gonna try and suck in the

reason them That was my thought but that's that's

all I really have to pitch about that the interesting

thing about Griffin gluck who plays Charlie He

is the voice of young Bruce Wayne in Batman versus

Robin from this year Yeah Yep, before that he

was on an episode of The Office in 2010, United

States of Terror in 2011. He was on 32 episodes

of Private Practice from 2011 to 2013. Apparently

he has a TV pilot called Cuckoo coming up this

year. Let's see, Zoe Levin who played Kara. Again,

it feels like I've seen her in stuff before Yeah,

but it I'm looking at her list and other than

red band society. I have not seen her in anything

Let's see here so some recurring characters we

had We had Wilson Cruz is Kenji Gomez Rijon who

is the nurse one of the other nurses that's usually

all always around Brittany and God don't do that.

Oh my god The two biggest guest stars they had

were Bella Thorne what you already talked about

and and Claire Wineland apparently played herself

as a cystic fibrosis patient and current survivor

Claire well and it's not becoming YouTube star,

okay So red band you got to mention Charlie's

dad, dude. Oh, yeah, that's right in Nicholas.

Well the Yeah Now I really need to go back and

rewatch the whole fucking series because I so

did not recognize him at all How did you not

he had I don't know. He didn't have anything

wrong with his wrist He was you know, he didn't

have that Super Bowl ring on. I mean, come on.

He didn't have Excalibur. He wasn't a kid in

King Arthur's court anymore. I mean, you know

about we're talking about the guy I know Tapped

Terry One of them anyway, you know Let's just

face it. That's a revolving door. Oh Yes, but

I mean no even that I'm sure I come on yeah But

yeah, no I honestly I Even rewatched the series

finale before we did the recording. I still did

not recognize him. Oh I don't know. I just didn't

reckon it. Maybe it's the hair. I don't know.

Yeah, it's probably gotta be there. Alright,

so I ran off a few of his things. He was in Radio

Flyer, it was his first film. Rookie of the Year

for me, Rookie of the Year and a Kid in King

Arthur's Corridor are the two main things I remember

him from obviously before he hit American Pie.

Let's see, after that he was in, let's see, nothing

interesting, honestly. Huh? He apparently played

Walt Disney in last year in something called

Walt before Mickey So that's interesting. He

he got his now When I say he got his make -me

-famous stuff with Radio Flyer and Rookie of

the Year and all that that was film Television,

you know where he got his debut He was little

Tony on who's the boss 1988 Oh Jesus Yep He was

on Baywatch for an episode. He was on married

with children for a couple episodes Dr. Quinn

medicine woman He was on the Tony Danza show

as Brandon The very hopefully very short -lived

honey, I shrunk the kids TV show But yeah, no

I so did not recognize him at all and I have

no idea why Just didn't you know The other one

we have to talk about is um Yeah Little miss

pop princess herself. Yeah, they actually make

a joke about that in one of the episodes the

episode where they go where nurse Jackson takes

them to the karaoke club and Kenji says something

about oh, why don't you get up there? What do

I know about being a pop princess diva singer?

You know and of course we're talking about you

know Mandy Moore herself a funny thing with her

is outside of Outside of a walk to remember and

Entangled most of the other stuff that she has

done. I don't think I've ever seen Yeah, that's

oh I do know the other thing I've seen her in

it was a voice role though, but she was Mara

in Tron uprising but uh... you know after uh...

right now she's uh... she's back in the disney

uh... stuff because uh... she did tangled she

did tangled ever after which is a short uh...

she's currently from last year to now to present

uh... she is currently the voice of uh... sheriff

cali on sheriff cali's wild west on disney channel

uh... and in twenty seventeen tangled is getting

a animated series Yeah, I forgot You don't sound

like you're too interested It was better than

the princess and the frog I'll say that yeah

Cuz that that that was just a you know a marriage

loophole for princess and the frog. But anyway

So overall red band society. I really dig the

show This is this is a show that and the reason

why I brought up that NBC show awake earlier

Just to give you and everybody else a little

little short. It's gonna connect a red band Awake

starts with the main character and his family

getting into a car accident during this accident

something happens to his brain where He has two

worlds. Think of The Matrix, but for TV. Instead

of having to choose the red pill or the blue

pill, he has the red reality and the green reality.

In one reality, his wife is alive and his son

is dead. In the other reality, his son is alive

and his wife is dead. And the two realities slowly

interconnect and it's just this really, really

awesome... Thriller kind of show I really really

enjoyed it, but how they do that is They start

this off and he basically splits and he has two

lives by the end of the series the writing works

itself around to basically Have his two lives

merge and become one like the accident never

happened It and this is kind of what the reason

why I bring this up is because this is kind of

what red band kind of did you came in charlie

essentially is the heart of the whole show he

is the full on main character for the most part

yes you're all the other characters main characters

but he's essentially the glue as i've already

said he came in in a coma he left he wasn't in

the coma anymore so it's kind of like you know

full circle um i absolutely love red band On

the GCR universal rating scale just because there's

a couple of things That I don't like that. They

didn't work that they should have worked on I'm

gonna give this probably a four out of five stars

But overall just sitting down and watching red

band society. I really dug it Don't remember

if they ended it with knowing that Or if they

were ending it hoping that was gonna go on season

to go on from where it was Yeah Sorry to say

that We've gotten invested with some of these

characters and now you're gonna spit us off on

Yeah, according to and I don't have any references

or anything or cited sources on this, but according

to Wikipedia... After the airing of the show's

pilot, it was said that the series would be canceled

if its poor ratings continued. Due to this, Fox

took the show off its Wednesday schedule after

its 10th episode. Fans waged a strong social

media campaign while a Change .org petition gained

37 ,000 signatures as of April 2015. Despite

this, on January 13th, 2015, the final three

episodes were scheduled. However, Fox attempted

to... have the series run in the summer and lower

the licensing fee, but ABC could not come to

an agreement. Thus the series was axed. Fox also

tried to save the series by shopping it to other

networks, but none were interested. A month later,

an Italian spinoff of the series, which I can't

pronounce, was reported to be earning strong

ratings in its Sunday time slot due to the news.

Speculations arose of the possibility of a reboot

to the American version, but it is unclear whether

a reboot is possible. Honestly at this point

after watching the full show and like I've already

said unless they're going to Continually bring

in new patients and people with new problems

I'm happy with the 13 episodes. We got I don't

think it needs to come back just to have it come

back I think what Fox should have done and of

course they wouldn't do this because it's Fox

and let's face it Sunday night is either football

or animation domination Think if it had been

on a better at a different night or going out,

you know, I it just I Loved having it on Wednesdays,

but I think if you put it up against something

that it would really need to work for or fight

for It would probably do. Okay. I don't know.

I just I Just don't want them to bring it back

just to fucking bring it back, you know, it's

like, you know, we don't need Heroes reborn.

Thank you very much. The first show was horrible

in itself except for that first season. Yeah

Absolutely Alright folks that's gonna do it for

us. It is time to exit stage left Red band society.

I really dug it. I know that you have some issues

with it Is there at any point do you think in

the future that you'll ever come back to any

of these episodes just for fun? Maybe You know

obviously like I said the pilot pilot was good.

I'd like the pilot The very end of the series

finale when we see Charlie singing You know you

can't always get what you want with all the other

kids. I like that you know And the fact that

all the kids were sticking up for Rolling Stones

being great. I thought that was a touch You know

You know it would have been interesting like

I said to see more with Kara going on because
