About this Episode

An analysis of the opening episode of the Starz science-fiction espionage series. The conversation covers the show's gritty tone, the premise of dual realities, and the central performance of J.K. Simmons as he portrays two different versions of the same character.

I have come to this building every day and done

my job. Three decades I've given to this office.

But honestly sometimes it scares me. I don't

know what we do here. Have I done something wrong?

Someone's walked in from the other side. The

other side I... Whatever you do, don't panic.

Hi, Howard. Billy, do you have any idea how lucky

you are? No one, no one gets to meet their other.

Other? Thirty years ago, during the Cold War,

there was an experiment. Something went wrong,

they opened up a passage. When you go through

this door, you come out the other side, you're

in another world. Identical to Alice There was

one reality and then it duplicated We share genetics

childhood. I want to know how you became so different

A kill order came out from my side targeting

people on your side Handle is Baldwin. She's

a contract assassin Your wife may be her next

target We're caught in the middle of something

whether we want to be or not. We should just

build a wall and never come back. They hate your

side for what you've done to ours. You don't

know these people like Heidi. They don't tolerate

mistakes. The last thing you want is me with

nothing left to say. You are listening to remote

control the geek cast radio networks television

podcast that talks about current TV from 2000

to now Listen in as TF2 and Mike and the rest

of the GCR and crew talk TV and now episode 33

of remote control Well, this is disappointing.

Why did you come over, Howard? Howard? Does he

really not know what's going on? What level are

you? He's an interface man. Enough, he's wasting

our time. Believe me, I'm not. But I have to

be back in about 12 minutes, so let's discuss

terms first. No one outside this room knows about

this arrangement. Why would we listen to a word

you have to say? Because if you don't, people

start dying. A kill order came out from my side,

targeting people on your side. Wilson. Yeah,

I get it. You're skeptical. You've made that

very clear. If there's a problem, we go to the

fourth floor. Your fourth floor may be compromised.

He's lying. There's no intelligence to confirm

any of this. All due respect, your intelligence

is kind of a shit show right now. Hello and welcome

to remote control here on the geek cast radio

network. I'm of course TF2 and Mike This is episode

33 of remote control you people might be asking

yourself 33. What the heck TF2 and Mike well

We had a bunch of variously named Spotlights

and specials and whatever else, but we never

actually named or started the actual regular

numbering episodes So episode 0 debuted on September

17th 2014 where we talked about who controls

your remote control And then the last episode

we did was Ryan the Unevenful, Merkley and I

on May 21st of 2017, where we talked about the

final episode or the final season for Breaking

Bad. So it's been a little while and we're just

doing a renumber thing and, you know, we're pulling

a Marvel or a DC or whatever you want to talk

about it. And joining me tonight is DJ Valentine

from Simplistic Reviews. Hello, sir. I am pleased

as punch to be here. A phrase I don't fully understand,

but I'm using it anyway. Thanks for having me.

Aha! And we're here to talk about the new hit

Starz original series. Yes, that's right, folks.

A premium network series. Starz's counterpart

starring J .K. Simmons. When did you first hear

about this? Because I know when I first heard

about it was after you watched it and you said,

Oh my God, J .K. Simmons is great or whatever.

That could have been any day in the past 10 years.

Well, yeah, I mean, honestly, any day in the

last 16 or 17 ever since, you know, exactly.

I mean, you know, even even before then he was

one of the psychologists on law and order on

order. Yeah. So it's like for Christ's sake.

Yeah, exactly. Well, I got interested in this

series I saw a commercial or trailer when I was

watching something else might have been Star

Trek discovery or something and I got interested

in the series for two reasons one as the aforementioned

JK Simmons and in the concept in 2011 there was

a film. I really liked starring Britton Marling

called another earth which touched upon this

concept of a Duplicate earth suddenly appearing

in that film's case. It was in our orbit With

duplicates of everyone. However, that film didn't

really delve deep into the concept It was more

poetic and symbolic as I had more than I'd hoped

the counterpart show when I saw the trailer it

seemed like it was going to jump headfirst and

into that concept and give me more of the nerdy

scientific explanations I crave with shows like

this on the JK Simmons front the man What can

you say? He's terrific. I don't think I've ever

seen him phone in the performance. He can do

no wrong. I mean, he can read the phone book.

He's still brushing his shoulders off. That movie's

horrid, but at least J .K. Simmons is there.

So like five minutes of the movie, you're like,

okay, well, at least I can get through this.

And thankfully we get two of him. On this show

which is why I jump to the chance to watch it

Absolutely This show when I first saw the trailer

and they said oh about 30 years ago a horrible

accident yada yada yada And it you know split

into two worlds The first two things I thought

of Were two very short -lived NBC series. Oh,

I know I think I know one of them my own worst

enemy Christian Slater Is Jason Isaacs the other

one you're thinking of? Awake. On Fox. Is that

it? I couldn't remember the name of the show.

He had two different lives. Yeah. Well, what

had happened on Awake was he got into a car accident

and his brain or something or other or something

happened to where his reality split. The reality

of where he was split and he could go between

the two of them kind of a thing. It was still

him, but the reality is what was different. It

wasn't two different people. With My Own Wrist

Enemy, it was... Did it have like half of a season

yeah, sadly or two episodes I didn't really like

it. Yeah, it wasn't like It wasn't supposed to

be like this. Oh this big thing. I don't think

NBC did a very good job with promotion Promotion

with whatever maybe it just didn't hit. Yeah,

it got nine episodes. But basically what it is

is is Kristen Slater's character plays two different

characters when one goes to sleep the other one

wakes up And they don't know what they're doing

each one doesn't know what the other one does

kind of a thing It's an all right. The way you

describe that is Very close spoiler alert for

anybody who hasn't seen this show mr.. Robot

I know we have to do that. We will be doing that

eventually oh yeah here uh... it's so funny when

we wrapped up are breaking bad coverage uh...

i had a couple of comments on the website which

is rare for me on any of my content that i do

but thank you to everybody who commented asking

if we were going to do other series like breaking

it down season by season at some point folks

dj and i will be talking mister robot season

by season so it's by heroin i must talk about

it's my favorite show on television right now

I remember seeing season one. I remember really

really enjoying it It's a little too close to

call right now, but counterpart might be my favorite

at this point Might be might be like out of the

original Kind of like I don't count when I'm

talking television shows like this and like mister

robot and like uh... you know that this kind

of stuff i don't want to be in the d c aro verse

uh... i don't like that's a lot of other kind

of like popcorn yeah that's a whole other kind

of thing but like as far as shows that are really

gonna make you think yeah so just a brief thing

with my own or send me it's one guy playing two

different characters henry spivvy and edward

albright and what like i said both played by

slated one doesn't know what the other one does

but anyway uh... because part of the premise

for that was they had to leave each other video

messages right whatever anyway um so yeah uh

counterpart this was a lot it hit the feel of

the shows i mentioned it also kind of has a matrix

feel to me really not in the sense that you know

neil's gonna come through and kick mr smith in

the teeth jk simmons Please, somebody bring in

Laurence Fishburne to teach him Kung Fu. You're

a battery, JK. You're a battery. But it's one

of those things where, you know, the two different

world aspect of it, like, you know, there's the

facade world and there's the underworld, which

is the real world, which is this dystopian kind

of place and thing. What's interesting to me

about this series, at least in this first episode,

is what we've learned is that... it's a world

on top of each other it's like upstairs downstairs

like you go downstairs you're in the other world

you go upstairs you're in whatever you know quote

-unquote real world uh... as you are watching

this what were you expecting out of it you know

what's funny we talk about mister robot in terms

of uh... shows and compared to counterpart I

think when I talked to you about it on Twitter,

I was like, wow, this is way more gritty than

I thought. On the commercial, it said spy. I

was OK. I was like, oh, no, they're really going

to. I'm thinking glitzy spy, and they're going

tinker -tailer soldier spy. It takes all of your

preconceived notions of an espionage kind of

thing, and you get to the grit, the down, dirty,

basement version of it. And it kind of just jumped,

dropped me into the world. And I was listening

to an interview with J .K. Simmons, and he told

his agent when he was approached to play, do

this show, that he didn't want to know about

anything. He didn't want to know about the concept.

He said, give me the script and I'll read the

script. And he said he read the script and on

page 20 is where the twist happens. And that's

what made him sign on. And I was like, man, you

know what? After I heard it, you know what? I

think this show would have grabbed me harder.

if they would have not promoted it with that

idea. We already know about the whole thing because

if you watch it in a bubble, if you go into a

cold and you wash it, they don't really give

you a heads up that that's going to happen. So

when that scene in the interrogation room happens,

you're kind of like, OK. But if you didn't know

any of that was happening, you'd have been like,

I think I would like to watch somebody's reaction,

watching that for the first time, not seeing

it. Nobody who has not seen any commercials.

So I was kind of, I was kind of expecting the

two person thing going in and the greatness of

their conversations. I mean, Orphan Black has

been doing it, had been doing it for years now

where you have five of the same actor. play five

different characters. So I've seen it on the,

you know, on that level with Tatiana Muslany,

but the conversations with JK has with himself,

it's just so... Tatiana Muslany and JK show that

you, what an acting really is, where you can

have a guy, they look exactly like Tatiana Muslany's

characters on Orphan Black, they look completely

different. They look exactly like, but they're

so different from, there is no, there's no point

of that... episode one where I'm like which one

is that even though they make a joke about it

which one are you you can tell just the way JK

carries himself when he's the one from one earth

to the other one it's just other than what I

think when he read that twist he must have known

I'm gonna have some fun playing this these characters

unlike James Franco in The Deuce where he plays

the twins and they I don't see the damn difference

at all. Here it just I just I can't wait to see

what JK is going to do in these situations when

he's the the more gruff spy version of himself

and then the more timid you know Steve Corelli

version of himself. So yeah going in I was expecting

more glitzy and it's very more grounded and gritty

and raw of a show. That's what I think makes

it so great and why I like it so much after just

one episode is because there isn't that glitz

and glamour But like they're okay another thing

I can compare it to and I know people are probably

gonna say in the comments Oh stop comparing it

and just talk about the damn thing, but I can't

help it The other thing I can think of to compare

it to is the film Gattaca. Yeah. Yeah No, well,

yeah, it's um, what's his name? Oh god? Ethan

Hawke. Yeah Yeah with Jude Law and whatever cause

it's you know, you know the whole Are you valid?

Are you invalid? Are you this? Are you that?

That reminds me of that, and it's one of those

things where, like, you're right. Watching JK

playing the same character, but two very different

versions of it, the only time I... And this is

not a negative thing. The only time I felt that

they were more similar, but yet still set apart,

is when they were having their conversation about

their life. Like, before the guy comes in and

says, which one are you? Fuck off. Before that...

you know when they were comparing their lives

and things you know I felt that they were very

similar at that point because the Operative or

the prime or whatever you want to call them the

JK from the under earth or the above earth or

I don't know whatever the mean JK Yeah, exactly

mean and nice. There you go. The mean one is

like, oh, you know, my wife died It was cancer.

It was this and I'm like, oh, okay. So he no

longer has his wife You know Nice JK his wife

got hit by a car and is in a coma and you know

he's doing this great You know husband stuff

and whatever else and I'm like, okay cool I can

see the two differences and then that ending

which we'll talk about later folks And I should

have said in the beginning there will be spoilers

here Which I can I can go in and add that in

later actually I might actually add a lot of

the commercial lots of we talked about is in

the trailer But yeah, I do recommend If I want

to see somebody go into this cold because I think

that scene the interrogation scene will that's

how you get a Viewer for life. Oh, I can miss

mr. Robot. I keep going back. You're talking

about comparing things It got me in the first

scene is so well written and it's such a stylish

thing It had me but when the big twist happens,

I'm like, well, I'm never not gonna watch the

show. Yeah, exactly And that twist takes a while

to happen. This happens in the first freaking

episode where you're like, whoa, what is going

on? And I think that's a good thing for this

to happen in the first episode because there

are going to be probably so many other twists

and turns for however long this series goes on.

I don't know. I've never... This is the first

time I've had... premium cable channel in years

so I don't know exactly what the plan is for

this series is it going to be like it says it's

a stars original series it doesn't say anything

about miniseries doesn't say limited series so

I don't know how long they plan on doing it I'm

sure there's gonna be a bunch of other twists

and turns now but there are also times where

I'm like okay there are two different worlds

get it over with already have them meet up don't

just and they did that and like you said they

could you cut to the east yeah cut to the chase

rip the damn band -aid off do it and go from

there because after that is when the differences

come in between the two different howards and

the the approaches are will be different yet

similar and they may agree may disagree i don't

know but it's one of those things where This

show really really grabbed me This is probably

why they showed The thing that we might consider

it's the two versions of them in the commercial

because that might not be the big twist. It's

the Jumping off point to even more twists as

you were talking about the final shot of the

the first episode Where I think we're gonna be

getting every episode We're like what I think

I know what's going on and then you realize oh

wait I might not know anything that's going on

which I think makes for a show that you're gonna

keep bringing you back Week in and week out.

Oh, absolutely. Yeah So far from what I can see

this has a 10 episode order Right and it ends

with a two -parter nine and ten are listed as

no man's land part one and two so if it's like

television today that isn't NBC CBS ABC Fox most

cable television things whether they're premium

whether they're basic whatever have that short

order they don't have 22 23 24 season -long things

so which is good Which is good, like you were

saying with Mr. Robot, Mr. Robot had what, 10

episodes the first season? Yeah, I think it was

up to 13 or 12, I think. Yeah. I mean, if you

go by the BBC model, which is like 6 and 3, we've

always, I've always talked about this on my show

with my co -hosts, that that's when you get quality.

There is no filler. When you get these, when

you're talking about the Arrowverse and stuff

like that, when you get these 22 episodes, like

10 of them are relevant anyway. The rest of them

are this filler episodes or you know, you don't

really need you watch BBC television like a Luther

or a broadchurch or something like that. Every

episode is must watch. There is no filler. You're

watching essentially a six hour movie or a five

hour movie or something like that. And Sherlock

is another good example. There's three episodes

per season, but every episode is, you're not

gonna, I'm gonna skip this one. You gotta watch

it. And I think when you go to these premium

channels and then the Netflix shows, I think

the Netflix needs to drop, I think if it comes

to like, Marvel shows they they're at 13. I think

they need to also drop to 10 because then you

get quality. I don't think we're gonna get any

filler on counterpoint. I think with Dustin explain

this world. You might need 22 episodes or this

phenomenon. But if you're making it and the the

the writer Justin Marks, I believe he he's not

going to Boris I don't think he has the time

to go away. Let's have a Flashback episode where

we know I think every episode you're gonna be

like uh goosebumps hand on the what is going

on how is he gonna how who is this woman what's

going you know that's that's how the whole season

should be and that's how spy show should be you

should not be bored during a spy show oh no not

at all this um also reminds me of kind of like

the first season of the americans right right

you know obviously that has a little bit more

flash than this but ethics well you know i mean

you know you go back you know 16 years the shield

episode 1 and you know he basically punches somebody

in the nuts You know I mean, and that was 2002

right you know but counterpart yeah, I'm very

excited for this show I am Very much looking

forward to seeing what they're going to do with

these characters As I said before if you haven't

turned back already turn back now for spoilers

That ending I was not expecting Other Emily to

show up like yeah said she was died of cancer

Like how do you how do you straight face a lie

like cancer like seriously? Here's the thing

that got me about that ending it kind of underlined

for me at the time what I was afraid of because

when Mean Howard as we'll call him comes over

it is automatically kind of take his word for

everything and I'm like What if Mean Howard is

the son of a bitch who's trying to destroy you

and he's lying in your face? You have no idea.

Maybe the girl is actually the good person. The

girl spy is trying to watch him. Maybe Mean Howard

is the one that hit his wife with the car. We

have no idea. So when they showed the wife, they

go, oh, he's a liar. Well, what else has he been

lying about? I was like, well, that right there

makes the show I want to know, because now the

whole time we now can't trust Mean Howard. Or

maybe Mean Howard is lying for a reason. It just

makes that character way more interesting with

that one shot of his wife, Olivia Williams. What

I'm going to enjoy about this is seeing how much

Mean Howard rubs off on Nice Howard. Because

the when they when the boss drops him off and

he's like, you know do what you got to do or

whatever It is nice Howard says that isn't something

he wouldn't like he's a conformist normally right

far in this in this series He's essentially The

early part of mr. Anderson from from the matrix,

you know You know, we're gonna get an episode

where nice Howard has to play mean Howard to

get some kind of information Yeah, that's going

to happen at some point. Yeah And as tropey as

it is, I liked and I didn't like that the Howards

shared all the infor - like when he - when Mean

Howard is like, okay, tell me everything so I

can, you know - Obviously part of the script

part of the creative part of the show nice Howard

didn't tell him every single thing Specifically

the flowers right and that's how assassin chick

knew he did tell him the flowers But he didn't

tell him what to do with them. Yeah, all right,

right? He didn't get the specifics. Yeah, no

not at all Yeah, and I don't know. I don't know

if I could say yet. I'll have to wait until next

week until we watch the second episode To see

if you know The quote -unquote assassin is actually

on the good. I seriously doubt it. That's a cold

-hearted bitch right there Like I don't know

again the way they Everything we've seen in the

first episode is from the perspective in the

information given to us By mean Howard which

at the end of the episode we are now confirmed.

He's a liar so there could be something else

going on here where Maybe she wasn't going to

kill her. She was going to rescue her or use

it for ransom or Maybe she was going to kill

her because Mean Howard killed that woman's family.

We don't know exactly her motivations, which

makes it interesting because I want to know more

about this assassin chick who, again, it's going

to be funny because she got shot in the face.

I believe she got shot in the face. She grabs

her cheek after Mean Howard shoots down from

the roof. So I don't know if she's going to have

facial reconstruction because they don't show

her after that point. So I don't know how the

hell she's going to look unless she's got a big,

you know. Fargo Steve Buscemi graze mark on the

side of his face. I don't know how that's going

to work. But no, again, the thing I loved about

the ending is now that everything that we just

saw in that episode is in question. Because everything

we had it to that point was mean Howard telling

okay, this is what's going to happen This is

what's going on blah blah blah blah. He's manipulating

the British guy and the guy from the blacklist

For to do whatever the hell he wants which again,

we don't know his endgame and again the endgame

they don't know about so Everything is up to

only person only thing that we know for certain

is that good nice Howard? is just been thrust

in the world that he begged for, that he's probably

gonna regret in about an episode and a half.

Yeah, about ten seconds. Ten seconds. Oh, okay.

Olivia Williams, who plays his wife, Emily, she

was Moira in X -Men The Last Stand. For five

seconds, and then they... Yeah. That's that with

Roseburn. Yeah. She was also in Sixth Sense,

I believe, in that Rushmore riot. Yes. Yeah,

Mount Rushmore in Sixth Sense. Yeah, television.

She was in Dollhouse. Yeah. She pops up here

and there. I confuse her sometimes for, speaking

of Broadchurch, I confuse her for the girl from

Broadchurch who's now going to be on the crown.

I forget her damn name. which one was on the

blacklist design on the one that goes with the

which one are you he was uh... okay the uh...

elizabeth king's i think fake father real father's

all okay yeah yeah character actors guys yeah

yeah because one is probably jk simmons and the

i mean that the show is built around JK Simmons.

So they probably just gave him some great character

actors to bounce off of. I don't know that much

about the assassin, the actress that plays the

assassin. And she doesn't really speak much in

this episode. So I'd be interested. And she might

not be able to speak ever again. Seeing again,

I want to underline the point that she got shot

in the face. So she may not speak in the whole

for sure. I think her name is Nazina. I cannot

pronounce this word, but Bon Nadi, I believe.

Bon Nadi? Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. She

was on Homeland, so God knows. But I mean, I

like her. Yeah, I want to know way more about

her. She's interesting. But again, I would not

be surprised to see episode two. Just keep out

for a little the hints that mean JK Simmons might

be actually evil. JK Simmons. We have no idea

what his intentions. His intentions don't seem

to be benefiting anybody but himself. Yeah, so

yeah, what I love the other thing I loved about

the first episode here is the ending with him

putting on the song like Nice Howard putting

on the song and then they're both kind of you

know singing that song at the end there Between

the two of them. I thought that was really cool

and like we said before I mean, it's JK Simmons

folks like that's really all you need you don't

really need anything other than that i mean come

on i mean it's to jk simmons two of them yeah

exactly jk simmons play the nicer juno father

jk jk simmons and you get like a and evil assassin

Version of JK Simmons and when I first heard

that I was like JK Sims is an assassin And then

I remember that picture of him where he was lifting

like 7 ,000 pounds and he's ripped to shit So

JK Simmons could whip your ass do not get it

twisted Yeah, absolutely So there's one thing

just kind of running down his filmography here

I wish I could go back to 1991 and know this

has nothing to do with the Steven Spielberg Hook

film, but he played Captain Hook in Peter Pan

at the Minskoff Theater. He played Captain Hook

and Mr. Darling. I want to see J .K. Simmons

as Captain Hook! That's pretty good. It has to

be better than Christopher Walken's version of

Captain Hook. So yes, I'll take J .K. Simmons

as Captain Hook. Oh, again, J .K. Simmons...

He could come back he could play Commissioner

Gordon and J Jonah Jameson at the same time And

I would not have any problems with it because

JK Simmons has not done anything Non awesome

that I've seen thank God. Thank I have not if

if there is a Film out there where he I mean

in the accountant. He's really good. I mean every

movie he shows up And I think he's in um that

Cohen Brothers movie The one that didn't do so

well with George Clooney and Brad Pitt and movies

of fan, but he's really good at it I just there's

there's things where he just shows up at all.

Thank God JK Simmons. He's gonna nail this scene

And now we got a show where it's two of him and

he's gonna be playing so many different aspects

of a character right that I it's it's It's I

think I think it's built for him to get a word

Consideration because of the whole thing with

the if you ever play a twin there's something

like that. You mean with Tatiana Maslany And

again, James Franco, now you have JK. I think

it's gearing for you to get award love. But now

we have it in the capable hands of an actor like

JK Simmons. So I just can't wait to see what

this show is going to give us. Absolutely. And

to me, folks, I don't know if they're ever going

to bring him back, whatever Fox and Marvel are

going to be doing. But there's only two. Jay

Jonah Jameson's. One is Ed Asner from the old

94 animated series. The other is JK Simmons,

because oh my god. He's perfect. I think it's

like he left off the pages. There's only one

actor that I can see replacing him in the new

Marvel Spider -Man Cinematic Universe. This is

kind of a tangent. It's John C. McGinley. But

that's it. I don't know anybody. And even then,

John C. McGinley, I think, would not knock it

out of the park. But again, he'll always be compared

to JK Simmons. It's like anybody who plays the

Joker to me will always be compared to Mark Hamill.

Anybody who plays Batman to me will always be

compared to Michael Keaton. Kevin Conroy, get

it right. Or Kevin Conroy, either one. Those

guys are kind of, you know, one A and one B for

me. Exactly. But counterpart, folks, as DJ said.

If you guys want to go in cold, please do so.

Don't watch any of the trailers or anything.

Just watch the series if you have stars. We will

be back each and every week for the next 10 weeks

for these episodes because, man, I'm loving this

show and I can't wait to talk about it with you,

dude. It's, oh god, it's so fun. Yeah, I think

I think the body counts gonna get high too High

body count from the first episode like oh wow

they don't really I Forget it's on star so they

can kill as many if Spartacus was on stars that

means we can get as many bodies as we You know,

I forgot, because I'm not really a horror person.

Bruce Campbell is great, absolutely love him,

but I forgot Ash and the Evil Dead is a Starz

series. Because I keep hearing everybody talk

about, oh, Ash and the Evil Dead. And I'm like,

oh, OK, so it's an AMC thing, like Walking Dead

and all that. And I'm like, OK, whatever. And

then I see the... the previews before this episode

of Counterpart, and I'm like, oh, Ash and Evil

has a Starz premium thing. Okay, cool. All right,

that works. But yeah, no, like, we've said it

so many times in the last, you know, 30, 40 minutes,

folks, J .K. Simmons is the only thing you need

to know about Counterpart. That's it. That's

all you need to know. So this has been episode

33. We're gonna get out of here in a moment.
