About this Episode

The team breaks down four episodes of The New Batman Adventures, starting with the female-led team-up in "Girls Night Out." They discuss the essential Harley Quinn origin story in "Mad Love," critique the plot of the plant-based "Chemistry," and analyze the introduction of the Creeper in "Beware the Creeper." The hosts share their thoughts on continuity, animation production notes, and Easter eggs found across these episodes.

I'll make a deal with you. If we go out on patrol

and Gotham is quiet with no sign of the Joker,

we come back here, have Christmas dinner, and

watch It's a Wonderful Life. You know, I've never

seen that. I could never get past the title.

not vengeance you're not the night you're not

batman don't ever do that again that's an outtake

right there hello and welcome to legends of the

dark night i'm your host steve megatron phillips

and joining me as usual in gotham city is tfg

and mike hello hello how are you good so we gotta

talk about the um The dare man news or the bat

devil news here as well. Oh, we know but we've

talked about it on the pull bag It's if they

want to hear my thoughts about it. They go to

alter I know but I'm not talking about it here.

No, I'm not saying in depth I'm just saying that

Ben Affleck is now going to be Batman and everybody

just needs to calm the hell down And for more

information listen to altered geek or the pull

bag. That's right What else is my going on? I've

been recording UltraGeek. Awesome. Awesome. That's

it. Yep, that's all I'm willing to divulge this

time, so. Okay, well, should we maybe get into

the episodes then? Yes, yes we should. Welcome

to Gotham. So she smoked you? We put up a fight.

And lost. I never thought I'd hear myself saying

this, but where's the bat? We're handling this.

Oh, that's reassuring. Don't let that donut dungard

get to you. We're gonna have this whole thing

sewn up before Batman and Superman get back.

Sure. How hard can it be? Two against one, right?

Right. First up is... Girls Night Out. That's

right. and it's all about the girls of the bat

and super family versus a superman villain and

two of batman's wenches yes live wire escaped

to new gotham and teams up with poise naive and

harley quinn and of course miraculously both

batman and superman are probably chasing the

joker or something uh or Lex Luthor or somebody

else, who knows. Batgirl and Supergirl must step

into their older comrades' shoes and defend the

city. I love how they explain where everyone

is. Like, Nightwing's off doing something, Batman

and Robin are off doing something. And at least

two things are the Batmobile. Yeah, that's true.

That's that's very true by that point. He was

pretty much already taken the bat to the cave

so Yeah, I am I didn't mind this This version

obviously like the original btis Season one batmobile

is is the best one out of this show? Out of the

whole of the animated series, but I honestly

didn't mind this bad I mind some of the other

batmobiles in the future shows And by future

show I'm not making a pun at Batman Beyond at

all because that Batmobile is the baddest thing

anyone ever created. But like, the times the

Batmobile shows up in Justice League and Justice

League Unlimited, it just looks dinky. But this

one here looks pretty cool. Yeah. I'll give it

a pass. I still prefer the original incarnation

of it though. Yeah. See yeah, it's all about

the girls and the girls have to defeat the other

girls and everything else and it all All kind

of goes to hell because because of Harley pretty

much Harley's gonna get her some brains. She

really does she used to have some until the Joker

sucked them all out of her Well, he didn't suck

it out of her. He just kind of you know It's

like when you you stick, you know chopsticks

in a bowl and you just start Stern and Stern

and Stern and Stern and Stern. Yeah, that's kind

of what Joker did to her head. Yeah. But Girls

Night Out, it's a really, really fun episode.

It's very, very cool. It... I love how it ends.

The two of them in bathrobes and towels. I don't

know, it's just kind of funny. It's just strange.

It's... Yeah Any other thoughts before I get

into continuity? Um Overall, it's not not a bad

episode. It's it's probably one of the better

ones with Harley in it and it's or not Harley

Poison Ivy and Harley and yeah, it's it's nice

to see the the female side of things as far as

the heroes are concerned, but Yeah Alright, for

continuity we have, obviously everyone knows,

Batman and Superman discovered each other's identities

in Superman the Animated Series World's Finest.

Barbara and Kara's friendship endures in the

subsequent episode, Unity, of Superman the Animated

Series. Kara mentions that Barbara will be jealous

that Metropolis meteors made Kara their official

Batgirl. In Justice League Comfort and Joy, Martha

Kent tells Clark that the girls are spending

Christmas together on a ski trip. And for some

reason, Barbara does not appear at Superman's

funeral in Metropolis in Justice League episode

hereafter, though Kara, Tim Drake, and Alfred

do. Pegwin makes a snarky comment that Kara is

too young to enter the Iceberg Lounge. Kara officially

turns 21 in Justice League Unlimited's Far From

Home. Barbara was admitted to the lounge in Joker's

Millions, and her hospital file in Batman and

Mr. Freeze's Observer revealed she was 20 at

the time. So that's some interesting continuity

bits. What? Yeah. So, for trivia, Batman slash

Bruce Wayne has appeared in every show in the

DC and Rey universe, but this is the only crossover

episode in which Characters from another show

appear on his When Livewire says and the hits

just keep on coming she is quoting Daniel Caffe

from a few good men Penguins line that's that's

it. Oh you three pixies go is a reference to

the film. It's a wonderful life Nice, I just

couldn't get past the title of what? I wonder

have you ever watched it? Yes, I've seen that

movie. Oh, you're you're so missing this dude.

It's not me giving an opinion of that movie It's

me quoting Bruce The Robin episode where it's

Christmas time Robin's like haven't you ever

watched it's a wonderful life and Bruce is like

I just couldn't get past the title No, I just

I assumed it was something you would say no.

No, I've seen the movie multiple times and yes,

I you hate it uh... for casting you've got nicole

tom as a supergirl cara uh... diane perishing

as poison ivy and one of the reporters it's uncredited

uh... robert castanza was harvey bullock paul

williams is the penguin uh... of course kevin

conroy his batman bruce wayne uh... i i really

enjoyed this episode this is this is a Episode

I could watch more than once every couple of

months. This is an episode if I if I find a good

laugh This is an episode I throw in Any other

thoughts no just it's it's a fun goofy episode

All right, let's move on before this train wreck

goes any further down the tracks I don't mind

saying I really hate these checkups If it weren't

part of the police physical, I wouldn't be here

at all. Oh, come now, Commissioner. What in this

miserable world is more beautiful than a nice

big smile? Naughty, naughty! Jump around like

that and doctor won't give you a lollipop! You

little... Oh, my. This doesn't look good at all.

I'm afraid... everything will have to go! It

was an easy hint, Joker. Sloppy. Predictable.

You're losing your edge. Excuse me, but the teeth

were my idea. So's this! Up next is... Mad Love

This is the essential backstory of Harley Quinn,

the Joker's girlfriend, and based off the comic

book of the same name, Both the episode of the

comic book were written by Paul Dini. Yep Very

very awesome. Yeah, and It begins with Commissioner

Gordon going to a dental appointment only to

find the Joker in his place as his dentist and

Harley ties him to the chair and The Joker's

about to kill the Commissioner and Batman crashes

in So they ruined the Joker's much wanted cavity

search of the commissioner that's where the line

comes from it's this episode what a gasser huh

mr j i give the punch lines around here i love

that line yes but there's there's just Not this

episode specifically, but there are just certain

lines from both Batman and the Joker, not necessarily

talking to each other, but they're such classic

lines. There was one a number of years ago when

I still had a cell phone. My outgoing message

on my cell phone was a line from Batman in one

of the Justice League episodes. Happy? Only call

me if it's important. Not before. What were you

gonna say I was gonna say it's funny because

in this Batman basically Tells the Joker that

he's getting sloppy and predictable you know

and Inferior eating him and of course Harley's,

you know playing backup Mm -hmm So, I mean it's

it's funny to see that It's it bet Batman essentially

got to the Joker Yeah, it kind of depressed him

that he's becoming sloppy and predictable and

he's kind of just depressed Yeah, pretty much

he's like, oh yeah, this will work this no I

remember why I scrapped that plan and in that

final scene Batman's like Batman says What does

he say, you know, you know what the worst part

about it is is she's come closer than you ever

have Yeah, but it goes back anyway to some years

ago With dr. Harleen quinzel a career -oriented

psychiatrist interested in extreme personalities

Which for whatever reason she pretty much chose

the joker And the joker, you know flirted with

her which she thought was great. Obviously Yeah,

and then he said they're you know appealing to

her her softer side Feeding her a load of crap

And then she basically breaks in and helps him

yeah It's it's the the story of girl gone bad.

So I Just find it interesting that they did this

as a comic first and then I mean I knew this

already but I Think it's great that they did

it as a comic first and then introduced it into

the series Yeah, we will most definitely be covering

the comic on the pullback eventually But yeah,

no, it was simply awesome and man this this episode

is just so great this this for me even at this

moment is a tie for first for my favorite between

it's between this and old wounds old wounds wins

out slightly but this is also right up there

uh absolutely amazing amazing episode um it just

is and uh and and the line the line is she almost

had me you know arms legs chain dizzy uh from

the blood rushing to my head i had no way out

other than convincing her to call you i knew

your massive ego would never allow anyone else

the honor quote unquote of killing me though

i have to admit she came a lot closer than you

ever did puddin and that just sends joker into

a just a rage a massive rage oh god i i love

this episode so there really isn't anything to

okay sure you can analyze it and what i find

interesting going back and watching this episode

now is i've seen the dark knight since watching

this beforehand and uh i know you're not gonna

like this but if he was still alive i could so

see heath ledger uh doing the lines about Joker's

father when he was telling the story about his

dad to Harley, I could so see Heath voicing it.

But that's what made me think of it was because

when Hamill did it here, I was like, oh yeah,

hey. That was pretty awesome. All right, what

do we got for continuity bits? I wasn't done

anyway. Oh, you aren't. No, I like the part that

on the news, they reference the fact that the

Joker's body has not been found. And then they,

of course, you know, knowing that he's cheated

death many times before, they make it sound like

it's unlikely that he survived this encounter.

But, you know, Batman pretty much knows he'll

be back. And then Harley's, you know, battered

and broken and. Swearing off the Joker and then.

Kind of falls for him again because she finds

a flower and get well card from the Joker Yeah,

she's just dumb Pretty much, but yeah the continuity

Apparently Joker's fish specific talking that

toxin from the laughing fish doesn't work on

piranhas Which is kind of funny affairs The flower

card at the end indicate the Joker survived,

confirmed by his next chronological appearance

in Injustice for All. Yep, that was the first

Justice League episode he was in. Yep. Harley's

survival of the fall is explained by the toxin

antidote she was injected with by poison ivy

and Harley and ivy, which also increased her

strength and stamina. Harley likewise survived

a much greater fall in Batman Beyond Return of

the Joker. So Harley's pretty much immortal.

Oh, she's not immortal. She's just it's harder

to hurt her She's more of a metahuman kind of

thing now Which is why she's old as dirt later

Yes production notes this story is based on Bruce

Tim and Paul Dini's comic book mad love which

won an Eisner Award for best single story in

1994 The production inconsistencies oh boy the

DVD closed caption of this episode spells Harley's

real name as H a R L E N E for harleen and then

quinzel it's Q U I N Z E L L E Paul Dini has

gone on record to confirm that her name is spelled

H a R L E E N for harleen and then quinzel is

Q U I N Z E L So somebody just didn't know how

to write Yeah, it's well see that's the thing

is Beak yeah, I think the name is spelled that

way because of Arlene Sorkin obviously the last

names don't match but at least the first names

do I Could kind of see that but at the same time

if he wrote it one way and they still couldn't

get it, right? Yeah, that's true. It's like The

flashback is meant to showcase Harley's origins

which took place during or before the continuity

of Batman animated series However, Batman and

Joker are both seen in their revamped appearances

instead Yes, which I could kind of see that but

they should have gone back at least for that

it would have been a nice nod Showing that old

animation. Yeah Yeah, they probably have any

ready because by the time this was going on by

the time new adventures was going on They were

kind of going bam bam bam bam done Well, they

were but the reason why they were doing that

and i've heard bruce tim say this is because

they were doing New adventures of batman superman

and batman that they were doing three shows almost

at once at one point So because they were prepping

at this time. They were probably prepping batman

beyond and just as far as like you know you know

getting the the treatment for it ready uh hardly

swordfish changes sizes between shots apparently

grows and shrinks in water uh when the pool when

batman and the joker standing on the train the

animation shows the train moving under their

feet when they should be moving with the train

i didn't catch that so Yeah, I didn't catch that

either. Trivia. Joker's exit line when leaving

the dentist office. May the floss be with you

is a reference to his voice actor Mark Hamill

being the most famous for his Luke Skywalker.

Oh, yeah. That's so hilarious. Yeah, I'm going

to have so much fun putting this episode of the

podcast together. All these Joker lines. In the

comic, Joker's line as he tossed a grenade into

Gordon's lap was watch those between meal snacks.

The episode is mostly faithful to the comic,

though the latter is more detailed. For instance,

Batman briefly sketches Harley's life story before

her employment at Arkham. She attended Gotham

University on a gymnastics scholarship, planning

to become a pop psychologist. The comic also

showed that Harley seduced at least one of her

professors to improve her grade. She's a whore.

When Gordon walks into the dental office the

name on the door is dr. J. Reco oh Geez, so they

just they just reversed it and it's an anagram

for Joker. That's hilarious Little things that

you don't notice until after the fact oh I know

it yeah when Joker is going through his old papers

one of them oddly enough has the logo of the

fantastic for Yeah, that's funny the death of

a hundred smiles is a play on the ancient exec

Execution method known as the death of a thousand

cuts You know Wouldn't have known that When Joker

first meets Harley he whistles his own theme

song That's pretty awesome. It is The exchange

between Harley and Dr. Leland when she is starting

at Arkham is adapted from a similar scene in

the comic. The original version was reproduced

with Arlene Sorkin voicing Harley as an extra

feature in the video game Batman Arkham Asylum,

also written by Paul Dini. The initial conversation

between Joker and Harley as well as part of her

breaking him out were also reproduced as extra

features on Batman Arkham Asylum. Hmm interesting.

I think I do remember listening to that on there

though Yeah, yeah having played that so while

so long ago. Yes There's in this book the Batman

handbook the ultimate training manual they include

Batman's escape from harley and Joker Reproduced

faithfully by the episode from the comic in a

list of his seven greatest and most memorable

escapes, not only delaying his own death by psychologically

destabilizing Harley, but also making use of

the piranhas to distract Joker, following by

grabbing his belt, extracting a lockpick, and

releasing his chains using only his teeth. Batman

is a badass. Yes, yes he is. This is one of the

only episodes of the series in which blood is

seen. Harley the Joker and Batman are all seen

bleeding from either their mouth or nose and

That was a big deal back then kiddies. Oh Yeah,

we can show blood. That's why Batman Beyond returned

to the Joker. They did something and colored

it purple Well in the edit No in the edit version.

No, the edit version had no blood whatsoever.

It had Are you talking about Batman though, right?

Yeah, Batman returned to the Joker Right, but

are you talking about on Batman or on the Joker

because in the edit version the TV version of

return of the Joker He doesn't get shot. He gets

electrocuted No, I'm not talking about that.

I'm talking about the the writing on the walls

and stuff. Oh, yeah Yeah, the ha ha ha ha ha

on the camera. Yeah, they colored it all purple

instead of blue red. So yeah You're right, you're

right. In an early scene, Harley casually asked

Joker, why don't you just shoot Batman? This

infuriates the Joker, who shouts at her about

how he wants to kill Batman in an elaborate,

good fashion to prove his sheer comic genius.

And then you mentioned the part of, you know,

the opportunity, you know, that Batman is chained

up. Joker decides to take advantage of it by

pulling out a gun and attempting to just shoot

Batman to be done with it. Which also happened

in the comic and then Batman throws his pun Yeah

Actually another interesting trivia bit that

I noticed it what I don't know if they intentionally

did this or not, but There is a scene in here

where Joker is going through all these plans

and he's essentially ignoring Harley and she

does all this Dress up stuff for him. She's basically

you know, modeling for him and all this scantily

clad lingerie and everything else, she's like,

oh, come on, Puddin, don't you want to rev up

your Harley vroom vroom? They would go back and

do this scene again in Superman the Animated

series with Mr. Mizziez Pidlick and his girlfriend

as well. They did the exact same thing of her

consistently changing costumes and making all

this sexy talk towards him, and he's not paying

attention whatsoever. I just now realize that

they copied themselves, which they... I'm not

saying it's a bad thing, I just find it funny.

Everything leads back to BTIS, people. Yeah.

And then some other lines... Like when Harley

says why don't you just shoot him the Joker says

just shoot him He says no this my sweet the death

of Batman must be nothing less than a masterpiece

And then you know he says the triumph of my sheer

comic genius over his ridiculous masking gadgets

Yes, that's true Yeah, and then You know of course

Harley's doing the you know knock -knock who's

you know pudding say hello to your new improved

Harley Quinn That was like earlier, but um yeah,

that was in the flashback I like when Joker's

going through his plans. He says boring and lame

not funny been done to Riddler They should have

thrown in one where where it's hey steal a cat

stash or two cat woman This episode is just so

awesome it really really is Yeah, this is this

is like a masterpiece episode of the whole New

adventures. Oh, yeah, most definitely Anything

else Nope, so with that we'll be moving on Get

ready, ladies. Any prospects on the horizon,

Susan? Excuse me. Ma 'am, can I get a shot of

you with the fellow that caught the garter? He's

right over there. Up next is chemistry! While

attending Veronica Vreeland's fourth wedding,

Wow, that hoe gets around more than Harley does.

Bruce Wayne is the one to catch the grotter and

is roped into posing for a photograph with the

woman who caught the bouquet, Susan McGuire.

Veronica introduces her as a friend of her new

husband, Michael. As they dance during the reception,

Bruce finds himself taken with Susan. So taken

that in fact he is distracted during that evening's

patrol as Batman and Robin has to save him from

a thug during a routine store robbery. You're

the goddamn Batman. This woman couldn't have

had that much of effect on you. Bruce takes a

leap and calls Susan back after a few weeks.

Bruce proposes to Susan and breaks the news to

his comrades that he has decided to finally give

up being Batman. Say it ain't so, Batman. Say

it ain't so. This episode is so horrible. This

is basically Poison Ivy using plant toxins to

create plant brides. It's so she can marry all

the rich people to her plants and then she can

take over. I know. It's oh god awful bad. Oh

my god. This is right up there with terrible

trio right up there with fire on Olympus right

up there with Oh God what is moon of the wolf?

Oh my god, it's just oh so bad I So for continuity,

I'm sorry, what did you think of this one? Ivy

apparently drowns in the water. That's the best

part Yeah, considering we only have two episodes

after this and then the series is over so this

is her final appearance I believe This is the

fifth time Bruce is tangled with Ivy merely because

he is Bruce Wayne not because she has suspected

him of being Batman Wow, she just hates Bruce

Wayne. Well, yeah because like that guy Yeah,

that's that's that's so true. She's never The

only time she's attacked Batman is when she's

had to like in In pretty poison when he gets

caught by her plants, you know She only attacks

him because she has to she has no interest in

Batman whatsoever Whereas she really you know

wants to get in Bruce Wayne's pants and his wallet

Well, you know you take the opposite of that

the Joker the Joker doesn't give a shit about

Bruce Wayne the Joker doesn't give a crap about

the mask rip the mask off and Reveal Batman.

That's all he cares about. I mean hell he even

said it in return to the Joker No, brucey your

old eyes don't deceive you. I'm back you know,

but it just This episode is so lame I enjoy Eternal

Youth more than this episode, and the only reason

why that episode of a Poison Ivy plot is even

any good is because of the chemistry and comedy

between Alfred and Maggie. God, I gotta say,

Poison Ivy, probably my least favorite character

out of the entire series. And honestly, I'm kind

of surprised considering this guy wrote... The

Stan Berkowitz wrote a good deal. He wrote four

episodes of new adventures. He wrote eight of

Superman the animated series one of them being

this world's finest part three He wrote a lot

of Batman Beyond I Mean he writes good stuff

except for this episode. Yeah, I'm not a fan

of this one I mean, he has a lot of good stuff

in Justice League Justice League unlimited. I

mean, it's oh, yeah, he's done some good stuff

It's just this episode. I just I don't care for

the plot Mean it's it's interesting. I'll give

them that I just I don't care for it. Yeah, no

not at all All right for continuity in Batman

the animated series house and garden poison ivy

was able to merge human DNA with growing plants

to create plant clones of the respective person

since then she seems to have figured out how

to make Plants in human form with a personality

of their own without using someone's DNA The

fact that Zatanna is in attendance at Bruce's

wedding indicates that she has somehow learned

his true identity, though at their last meeting

in the episode Zatanna, she knew Batman only

as her childhood friend, John Smith. Zatanna's

knowledge of Bruce's secret identity is later

confirmed in the Justice League Unlimited episode,

This Little Piggy. This is... Well, you already

mentioned about the poison ivy thing. Alright,

so for production and consistencies... When Bruce

is knocking at Veronica's door, the mansion explodes

and there is a frame from the explosion of Ivy's

greenhouse that comes up only later in this episode.

When the cruiser blows up from inside, the first

explosion features footage of the Batman Beyond

episode, Splicers, specifically the scene where

Carmine's taxidermy studio explodes and splinters

fly about. The design for Ivy's plant henchmen

was reused in the video game Batman Vengeance.

That was the production notes. I'm sorry now

for the inconsistencies. I'm so inconsistent

this tonight on this episode Like Michael is

credited as Michael Vreeland when logically Veronica

would have adopted his last name not the other

way around Bruce Locke is erroneously credited

as Bruce Gilbert for trivia last appearance of

Nightwing Batgirl and Veronica Vreeland on the

new Batman Adventures This and Sins of the Father

are the only episodes of new Batman Adventures

to feature all four members of the Bat Team,

not including Alfred, in the same place at the

same time, though Nightwing appears out of costume

in both occasions. Elements of the instrumental

score, the promise from the feature film Batman

Mask of the Phantasm, can be heard when Bruce

announces his intention to give up being Batman.

Linda Hamilton later played another femme fatale,

Dr. Stephanie Lake, in Batman Beyond's Meltdown,

only this time she began a fake relationship

with Mr. Freeze rather than Batman. The guest

list at Bruce's wedding includes Leslie Tompkins,

Dr. Joan Leland, Kirk Langstrom, and his wife

Francine. Why? Why would they be at his wedding?

Man, bat, and female man? Oh, God. What the fuck?

Summer Gleason, Jack Ryder, Zatanna, Jason Blood,

Lucius Fox, Commissioner Gordon, and Mayor Hamilton

Hill. One of the plant creatures resembles Pierce

Chapman. Whoever that guy is. Batman and his

allies apparently don't consider Ivy's creations

to be sentient life forms since they exterminate

them without compunction. Oh God, give me your

face! it is left unexplained why veronica's state

-of -the -art laser gate which can cut through

anything can be deflected by a simple mirror

oh wow all righty then um so yeah interesting

uh oh yeah that's right mary lou henner was the

voice of veronica i forgot about that um Very

awesome. So Yeah Chemistry very very bad episode

Not the worst ever but just no no, no, no All

right, we are gonna move on to the Second to

last episode of the day seven years ago this

very night the clown prince of crime the Joker

was born on this spot Since then Gotham has repeatedly

been rocked by the attacks of this criminal madman

Who is he? Where did he come from? What diabolical

scheme is he plotting even now? I'm Jack writer

join me as we answer these questions and more

on Joker the madness behind the laughter Next

up is Beware the Creeper. At the Ace Chemical

Plant, news reporter Jack Ryder is anchoring

a live TV special on the career of the Joker,

starting with his encounter with Batman at the

plant that ended with his life -changing tumble

into a vat of chemicals. Joker, watching from

above, decides to stage his own tribute to that

fateful day, entering the scene, dosing Ryder

and his crew with his trademark laughing gas,

and then reenacting his confrontation with Batman

by tipping Ryder into another vat of chemicals.

Batman, having glimpsed Joker on television,

is quick to arrive at the plant with Robin. So,

yeah. You get to see Jack Ryder become the Creeper.

Oh, I... this is... no wonder I hate this episode.

They basically... Rehat, oh god. Jack Ryder,

Jack Napier. That of chemicals. They basically

are doing an animated version of Batman 89 here.

They are, dude. Although in this case Jack Ryder...

ends up more defunct and he actually wants to

become a joker you know but yeah wow strange

very very strange um yeah i don't care for this

episode whatsoever i i just don't care it's it's

not a good episode it pretty much made my brain

hurt. I enjoy the last episode way too the day

that we'll talk about next up, but more than

I do this. I didn't mind this one honestly just

because you have Joker and Harley and everything

causing this whole thing and they presume Ryder

dead and you know he Because of the Joker toxin

and falling in there he ends up kind of screwed

up to say the least But He's extraordinarily

strong agile and man like a maniac with yellow

skin instead of the the Pale skin of the Joker

he has green hair as well, and he has a crazy

grid And then he runs around town decides he

wants revenge on the Joker And then he goes into

a thrift store steals his goofy ass costume.

That looks like a mix between Some random superhero

and Craven from spider -man the animated series

Wow, that's nuts And then he decides to become

a crime fighter using his own credit card Batman,

you know kind of heads him off and It's funny

because Harley bumps into him and he's just like

hitting on her and Call she calls him a creep

and he decides to call himself the creeper It's

it's just it's sad It's very very very sad, but

It's funny because You have the creeper confronting

Joker who throws a vial of explosives However,

the creeper is still unharmed and is only momentarily

defeated when Harley hits him with her hammer

and then Batman and Robin go in there and pursue

them and creeper wakes up and pursues Joker and

Harley There's the Joker mobile The creeper eventually

catches Joker But he's so crazy and frantic that

Joker begs to be arrested He's like he's a lunatic

and Batman cuffs the Joker and injects the creeper

with sedative Yeah, that's the that's the best

part about this episode and then Batman gives

him like a Antidote skin patch that he had that

rider has to wear in order to stay normal to

counteract the chemicals and then Ryder examines

the skin patch and then says I find it difficult

that a little piece of cotton can make such a

big difference and then Outside the apartment

you hear small sound of tearing fabric and then

the creepers crazy laugh Yeah, I was like wow,

this is just This is all kinds of like freak

like the Joker's even just like freaked out.

He's creeped out You got anything before continuity

Okay Continuity wise in the documentary it shows

that the Joker worked for the velestra mob as

seen in Batman mask of the phantasm The beginning

of Jack Ryder's special on the Joker states that

his former identity was unknown and that he operated

under a variety of aliases. In two previous instances

before the revamp, Dreams in Darkness and Joker's

Wild, Joker was given the supposed real name

of Jack Napier, the same name he was given for

the 1989 Tim Burton movie. This episode makes

it clear that Jack Napier is not his real name

and was merely an alias that the Joker used at

one time. That means that his mystery A name

is still unknown Just like his comic version

And then it says according to the special jokers

accident was seven years before this episode

Which that's I Find that interesting too. Yeah,

that's pretty interesting When Batman sedates

the creeper in the end the syringe tube on the

injector fully disappears into the device's narrow

point Despite being made out of glass or solid

plastic Interesting Trivia on the season 1 DVD

of Freakazoid Bruce Tim mentioned his original

ideas for the Character were closer to the creeper

And specifically how the DCA used creeper turned

out then the over -the -top roads eventually

taken which caused Tim's departure from that

show Yeah, as much as I love everything Bruce

Tim touches as far as production and animation

and all the stuff he's done in his career I'm

Kind of glad no offense to the man at all We

do actually want to interview him at some point

for the show before the show ends at episode

40 But I'm glad he I I just I don't think I could

see a Siri back then at that time you You had

serious cartoons in the Marvel stuff, and in

BTIS, you didn't need... You know, and then you

had the funny stuff like Tiny Toons and Animaniacs,

and Freakazoid kind of fits in along with those.

It's a little bit darker humor than Tiny Toons

and Animaniacs, but... I don't think I could

see a serious, dark, overtone Freakazoid cartoon.

No, I couldn't have either. I love that show

the way it is. Yeah. And you have Ra's al Ghul

as Loeb. Yeah. Yeah. The thrift store is called

Ditko's Vintage Clothing after comic creator

Steve Ditko and a mannequin resembling the question

is seen in the background. He also created both

the question and the creeper. Yeah, he did. The

title of this episode comes from the creepers

original solo series in the 1960s beware the

creeper The dramatized Batman and writers documentary

look similar to Batman and his very first appearance

in detective comics number 27 Joker's gang in

this episode moe lar and Kerr very closely resemble

moe Howard Larry Fine and Jerry Curly Howard

the three stooges Yes, which were used Inspiration

for previous goons The creepers startles the

woman in her apartment. He leaves saying, okay.

I love you. Bye. Bye This is the line frequently

used by Mindy in the television series Animaniacs

I Thought I caught that in there. Yep Harley

Quinn's anniversary song to jokers and homage

to Marilyn Monroe's famous rendition of happy

birthday to President Kennedy during the episode

Joker accuses the creeper of stealing his act

Jeff Bennett the voice of creeper I thought that

was him yeah went on to voice the Joker on Batman

the brave in the bold so he did steal his act

eventually yeah Harley and Joker's escape float

is similar to Disneyland Disney World it's a

small world attraction cute robotic dolls from

different cultures with a giant globe on top

That is the worst fucking ride I have ever been

on at Disney Yeah, it is annoying. It's annoying

the song is what's annoying It's just yeah It's

gonna be I know I said this earlier, but it's

gonna be so fun editing this episode of the show

I'm sorry. I'm sorry fans I let him edit last

episode and this episode, so you have to deal

with whatever he decides to do. And it's interesting

and it's not really that surprising, but Billy

West is all three, Mo, Lauren, Kerr. Not surprising.

His fry is essentially Larry Fine. Oh, yeah,

you know it but So so awesome absolutely awesome

to see him in the show. I love some of the quotes

in this And now the weather Hartley Gaga with

a 50 % chance of schizophrenia I Want to strike

terror into the hearts of criminals cash or plastic

Last time we met you were working for dramatic

pause the joker Talking about Harley. Oh, yeah,

that's what you want the inside story on the

joker also your phone number Batman says says

to him. Who are you? Creeper they call me yellow

-skinned wacky man, but I prefer the creeper

Robin says call Arkham quick I know Joker he's

a lunatic Yeah, the episode was it's not as bad

as what you're saying, but it's it's it's more

of a fun episode. It's a stupid fun But it's

a fun episode Yeah And it takes Freakazoid to

like a darker level Yeah, it's not as bad as

chemistry. I'll I'll give it that that's as good

as I can give it All right, are we ready for

the final episode of the series? Yes, let's move

it on. Is there no honor among thieves, Mr. Cobblepot?

And you're worse than a thief, trafficking in

stolen goods. I don't know who you are, sir,

but I assure you, my transactions were all legitimate.

You see, I had no actual knowledge that the items

were stolen. Given that, I don't see how the

law can touch me. I am the law. I am the law!

Final episode of the day and the final last episode

of Batman the animated series is Old Wounds,

yay! Oh no, wait, I'm sorry. Judgment Day. I

am so sorry. I know people love Over the Edge

and that's a damn fine episode, but with the

way Old Wounds ends, it should have been the

series finale. I like Judgment Day. It's a good

episode. I'm gonna get in the description here

in a second, but I have to rant about this because

why they did not air Old Wounds Last is beyond

me. I have no clue. So for Judgment Day, in his

design studio, the Penguin is conducting illicit

business with Killer Croc. I throw a rock at

him. Fencing a stolen diamond, he informs Croc

that the item he has stole is not seller's market

and therefore can only offer no more than $50

,000. Croc is outraged, but the Penguin justifies

this reduced offer based on expenses entailing

his business. At that time, Two -Face arrives

and the Penguin says that he was able to secure

a better price for his stolen goods. Croc becomes

even more infuriated and the Penguin tells him

he can find himself another fence. Kroc grudgingly

takes his money and leaves with Two -Face. The

penguin cordially bids them goodbye and turns

to his safe. As he stashes the diamond and a

wad of money inside, he boasts of how he swindled

Two -Face upon that. A deep voice surfaces asking

if there is no longer honor among thieves. The

penguin turns around to find a tall figure. dressed

in a long black robe and wearing ceremonial wig.

The figure accuses the penguin of being worse

than a thief for trafficking in stolen goods.

The penguin vouches for the legitimacy of his

business, claiming to have no prior knowledge

of the origins of said items, and therefore considering

himself exempt from the law. The man proclaims

himself as the law and unsheathes his sword.

He finds the penguin is guilty and starts swinging

at him. The penguin runs for his life and calls

out for his hench girls only to find them tied

up and hanging from the ceiling. He then makes

a run for the back door and tries to unlock it

while his pursuer sends a giant penguin model

rolling towards him. Effigy runs over the penguin

knocking him unconscious. Basically to spoil

this for everybody two -face has a third face

the judge Three faces three face This episode

is a very psychological episode because it deals

with Harvey It deals with his two halves being

always in conflict with each other so he then

creates a third personality to atone for his

sins as as two -face I Think that's damn interesting

You don't apparently Find it interesting that

he developed a third personality Yeah, I don't

care Was surprised to find out that he developed

a third personality all of a sudden it just seemed

like a convenient plot device But it could be

the good and it could be the good and Harvey

Dent coming out in that persona kind of like

Bruce and Batman and Yeah, he's taking a couple

of good pummels to the head Yeah, I want to be

a good guy now I'm gonna be catatonic for the

rest of my life Well, he's not catatonic he isn't

he's He's he's just constantly talking to it

like at that end scene when he's in the in the

cell guilty guilty guilty He's just talking to

him. He's having a conversation with his three

personalities Because he's standing trial in

his own mind So it's an interesting End for Two

-Face All right, so anything before Production

inconsistencies you get any other thoughts? Not

really Right after the judge says may heaven

have mercy on your souls to face both of them

Two faces haves have flipped his good half is

on his left side and all his bad half is on his

right Trivia last appearances of killer croc

the Riddler two -face and the penguin in the

series However, the Riddler and penguin reappear

in the Superman the enemy in series episode nighttime.

Oh Man, you need to you need to see that episode.

You're gonna love that episode. Oh, I did. Oh

You've seen it. Yes Don't do that again. It creeps

me out Perfect muscle control The Penguin later

reappears in the movie Batman Mystery of the

Batwoman. While Killer Croc, The Riddler, and

Two -Face make brief appearances as training

robots in the Batman Beyond episode, Terry's

friend dates a robot. And in alternate reality,

Two -Face makes a non -speaking appearance in

the Justice League episode, A Better World. Despite

the fact that the new series focused more on

the sidekicks of Batman, there are none in this

episode. At the start of the first scene with

the judge and J. Carol Cochran, a male version

of Lady Justice is seen outside. Rather than

a blindfold, he wears sunglasses as more modern

take on the adage, Justice is blind. Well, if

Justice is blind, he must be blind as a bat.

Oh, come on, you know that bat fleck pun was

funny. Oh boy. This is bad. Wait. Who the hell

was Moe? And I don't mean Moe as in the Three

Stooges Moe. Uh, Moe wasn't... Oh, wow. I didn't

even notice that. Lauren Lester was the voice

of Moe, one of Two -Face's henchmen. Did not

even notice that. Nice. That's awesome. John

Glover, obviously, is the Riddler. Steven Weber

was J. Carol Cochran. Overall, as a regular episode,

I really, really enjoy the Judgment Day. as a

series finale, not a very good choice. No, it

sucks. It just flat out sucks. I don't know if

this is how they planned it. I don't think it

was. I don't know if this is what Fox told them

to do. I'm not sure because I know by this time

they probably got there because they were working

on. Well, we had the because the whole point

of the new Batman Adventures is also it was teamed

with The new Superman Avengers because there

were several crossovers between the two shows

hence why you have that really awesome Batman

mixed with Superman theme at the beginning of

the podcast you know so because there were several

times where The intro and actually I'm gonna

go on YouTube and find the intro and I'm gonna

embed it in the post for episode 22 of Legends

of the Dark Knight It's a combination of their

their animation styles and models and logos and

all that so Overall the job I keep wanting to

call it the judge. I don't know why judgment

day It's a good episode as a series finale. No

Nope Any other thoughts on judgment day It's

judged in the verdict is in and it is over We

Joker. Where? It's just me, B -Man. No joker,

no gas bombs, no city in peril. Just you, that

tank, and me. Why? To show Mr. J I could really

pull off one of his plans. See, he could never

get these fishies to smile. But then I had the

bright idea of hanging the victim. That's you,

upside down. That way, to you, it'll look like

they're smiling. Clever? Brilliant. Yeah, yeah,

I can tell you're less than thrilled. You know,

for what it's worth, I actually enjoyed some

of our rumps. But there comes a time when a gal

wants more. And now all this gal wants is to

settle down with her lovin' sweetheart. You and

the Joker? Right -a -rooney! I've never seen

you laugh before. I don't think I like it. Cut

it out! You're giving me the creeps! You little

fool. The Joker doesn't love anything except

himself. Wake up, Harleen. He had you pegged

for a hired help the minute you walked into Arkham.

That's not... No! No! He told me things! Secret

things! He never told anyone! Was it his line

about the abuse of father? Or the one about the

runaway mom? He's gained a lot of sympathy with

that one. Stop it! You're making me confused!

What was it he told that one parole officer?

Oh, yes. There was only one time I ever saw Dad

really happy. He took me to the ice show when

I was seven. Circus. He said it was the circus.

He's got a million of them, Harley. You're the

problem! And now you're gonna die and make everything

right! Except you'll never believe you did it.

Huh? Sure he will! How's Joker gonna know I'm

really gone? All those fish will leave are scraps

of bone and cloth. Anyone can fake that. True,

you've got my belt. But it's not the same as

a body. You'll never buy it. Lame. Not funny.

Been done. Too rittler. What? Harley? Where the

heck have you been? Batman, eh? You don't say.

You have who? Tied up where? Well, nerds to you,

Mr. Smarty Bat. When I told Mr. J what I was

doing, he was so... Excuse me I'll be just a

minute. Are you looking for a weekly dose of

And we're back with Legends of the Dark Knight

after that final five episodes of Batman the

Animated Series. I'm let down I wish they would

have put old wounds last I really do yeah well

the order wasn't exactly something that no I

know control I'm sure so yeah no I understand

that still it just I don't know all right so

what are your top five For this up Chemistry

is coming in last But where the creeper is next

judgment day girls night out and then mad love

is number one About you well for me. I have to

say that Hold on Damn computer Hold on damn computer

Yeah, so My starting from the bottom and working

their way to my number one of the night I would

say chemistry is my bottom feeder Followed by

judgment day followed by beware the creeper followed

by girls night out followed by mad love Yes,

my number one so yeah So yes, this is the final

episode covering Batman the animated series episode

reviews As we're all as it changed three names,

but yes Yes, Batman the animated series the adventures

of Batman and Robin and the new Batman Superman

adventures Overall the series is damn good. It

was groundbreaking for its time going back there's

maybe I don't know out of a hundred and eight

a hundred nine episodes there's maybe thirty

that I can watch over and over and over again

I can kind of agree with that yeah shall we reveal

what's coming up over the next through the rest

of the year yes just so everyone knows we are

not and I repeat, are not going to be starting

Batman Beyond until next year. We are, on the

other hand, going to be finishing out 2013 with

commentaries of the following films. Starting

with Batman Mask of the Phantasm, Batman and

Mr. Freeze Sub -Zero, Batman Mystery of the Batwoman,

and the Batman Superman movie World's Finest.

Yes, that's right. Uh, Batman Superman movie

World's Finest will be aired on Halloween this

year. It will celebrate our... Oh, God, what

is it? Two -year anniversary? Of the show? Yeah,

when the hell we start this show? Uh, back in

2011. Yeah. Eleven, ten, eleven. Don't always

start with the the intro episode was Halloween

of 11 But yeah, yeah, we originally intended

this show to be done by this point, but obviously

schedules got in the way but after the commentaries

we only have 14 more episodes. Yeah, so But yeah,

it's it's been a fun ride going through Batman

the animated series I have to agree with you

as well that it was kind of let down the last

episode Not having I mean I can see having mad

love in there. I agree old one should have probably

been in there Couple other episodes that could

have been included in this like legends of the

dark night See if they just switched if they

just moved a few of them around and switched

it to the last five episodes to having these

blockbuster hits Yeah, if they just took Over

the edge Old wounds legends of the dark night

girls night out and mad love as the final episodes

with obviously old wounds be because that's the

thing it's like When you watch Old Wounds, what

happens in that episode by the end? Nightwing

appears to forgive Batman, and they go off into

further adventures into the unknown of, you know,

stopping criminals. That's how I see the end

of that episode. And, you know, we live in an

age today where continuity is everything in television.

I get back in the 90s it wasn't. But... Yeah.

I don't know. But yeah, I mean, I can agree with

that. But yeah, in any case, the next episode

you guys will hear will be Batman Mask of the

Phantasm commentary, which happens to be also

the very first movie I ever saw in theater. So.

It holds a very special place to me. I'm trying

to remember the very first movie I saw in the

theater, I think. I think it was 89 Batman. Nice,

Batman. I think it was because after that I remember

the next one was Turtles and then Turtles 2 and

then Batman Returns but anyway but yeah no I

mean and I'm gonna tell you right now folks and

Steve and I haven't talked about this all as

I'll say is when we get to Batman Beyond next

year It's the podcast is just gonna fly by we're

still gonna You know do our due diligence and

and put all of our dedication into doing the

show But it's not gonna be like every two weeks

here and then three months pass. You know what

I mean? It's gonna Fly by since Batman Beyond

is on Netflix or at least it is at this point.

Hopefully it still is next year I would assume

it still would be And I don't know they removed

spider -man the animated series and x -men the

animated series So well doesn't been on there

a while too. So yeah, that's true I'd assume

these would be on there for a while. But anyways

Any other thoughts? Oh Not that I can think of

already then let's close it out then Thank you

celebrating 20 years of Power Rangers. It's morphin'

time! Thank you so much, Jason David Frank, for

that ringing endorsement. Yes, that's right,

folks. Starting in Episode 29, From the Command

Center is going back and celebrating 20 years

of Power Rangers with the From the Command Center

Commentaries. We'll be doing 15 episodes from

MMPR Season 1. And after that, who knows? I know

we're doing commentaries from seasons 2 and 3,

and we'll do a commentary on the film. After

that, who knows? Commentaries could take us through

a number of episodes. There's a very, very, very

long list. So I hope everyone enjoys it. As I've

said before, we will get to Megaforce once that

series completes itself on Netflix or whatever

else. Thank you so much, and now... Prepare yourself

we did not pick up on in the original overview

episodes of the podcast, or stuff we missed when

we watched them as children. Thank you very much.
