About this Episode

We explore our history with Transformers comics, discussing the Marvel, Dreamwave, and IDW runs. We move on to the world of video games, reflecting on favorites like War for Cybertron, Armada, and older classics, while sharing opinions on newer releases.

You're listening to All Things Transformers,

version 2 .0. Transformers version 2 .0. I'm

your host Steve Megatron Phillips and joining

me again in this episode is Dear Joe and Mike,

this is Pecan Court Michael Hey, how's it going?

You didn't slow that down enough. You're supposed

to stop. This is continued Pecan Court Mike No,

you're speeding it up. You're speeding your name

up. You're supposed to slow your name down Pecan

There you go. Man, that doesn't sound right,

you know? He's slow, and then he stops, and then

he rushes it out. This chicken isn't even good.

My pants! Used to fit! Oh god. Hey, how's it

going? This is so not Otto Botley tonight, ladies

and gentlemen. In this episode of All Things

Transformers, episode 43, we're here to briefly

discuss the comics and the video games and i

bet everybody staring at their ipods or other

media devices saying briefly what are they talking

about we're going to cover some of the comics

we're going to cover some of the video games

but we're not going to go in oh god the three

good ones real and stretchy you know who would

love this proto man would love this because i

think he's actually played Like the old SNES

video game. I've played them on emulator. Return

of Convo. Oh, really? Yes. Return of Convo. I've

never played it. I have all of them on emulator.

I've seen video. It just looks so incredibly

difficult that I don't even want to try. It's...

Yeah, that's... I can't even... It's insanely

difficult. Yeah. I said, I don't even want to

try. I don't even want to give it a shot. Now

I know, and I know Proto Man, if he listens to

this, he's gonna be screaming at the top of his

lungs. I know that there was an unmade video

game. That was just a bunch of... What am I looking

for? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. This was

fully animated. It was nothing but cutscenes

based on the 86 movie and I cannot think of what

the name of that game is at all. Me neither.

Quick, to the wiki! I'm not sure if I should

reveal this or not, but a certain voice actor...

Sent me the wrong promos, and it was promos of

him as lio convoy Doing lines for something I

should divulge off air Yeah At least tell me

who if you do not have them So we're here to

talk about the comics and the video games we're

gonna talk about the comics first Michael what

was the first transformers comic you ever picked

up? Oh man, you know I want to say it was the

dreamwave comics because those might have been

the first ones I actually ever bought but there

were There were you know comics before that clearly

And I was a comic collector like in high school

because I was a huge geek. But I didn't buy any

of those. And I remember seeing the older ones

where, you know, you've got like Starscream,

but you've got Shockwave on the cover and it

says the Transformers are all dead. And it's

like, hey, you know, that looks intriguing. Maybe

I'd like to read that one someday, but not really,

because once you crack one open, you find out

the art, the stories are kind of crap. And that's

going to piss off a lot of people who loved the

comic book back in the day, but I really didn't.

I just didn't think it. I didn't think they meshed

well with the cartoon, which is really what my

version of Transformers is based on. I just didn't

get into it. And. You know, years and years and

years later, when I had disposable income and

I said, you know, I'm going to go back and pick

up some of the trade paperbacks. And I started.

Looking at some of the later issues, you know

issue 50 and so and and I'm looking at the You

know Simon Furman stories and the Andrew Wildman

art and just hated it Just like oh man, you know

to this day. I don't like Wildman art. I you

know, and he's a really nice guy I've met him.

I didn't tell him to his face that I hated his

art. But god do I hate his art? I just don't

like the way he draws transformers And even after

the IDW brought him back, and he's still drawing

Transformers, and they still look the same! They're

terrible! Are you talking about the generations,

or the... Yeah, the regeneration? Regeneration,

yeah. Oh man, that's bad. I will say though,

that those are... The ones that take place later

in G1 are insanely better than when it started.

Well, you know when it started it was just like

we have this property We don't know what the

hell to do with we're gonna throw it to one of

our stringers And it was like low man on the

totem pole had to do it. So I don't I Don't mind

the art being bad in that case. Whereas, you

know, it's been around for a few years. It's

a proven property You know, they even they brought

in guys from the UK to do it they didn't have

to do that They could have just thrown it back

to a stringer Well, the funny thing is is they

almost Michael Bate it Okay, you have to define

that okay, they added human eyes human facial

features Oh, no that robo kibble. Yeah, I know

what you're talking about. Yeah. No it literally

the Wildman art Again toward the latter end of

the series looks like people dressed up As in

transformers cope display, you know with with

their faces painted silver It just it doesn't

look good. I Never liked it. I'm like, you know,

I I this is a mesh for me You just can't reconcile

this with what I enjoyed as a kid And even then,

you know, the stories aren't I mean, I'm gonna

get a lot of hate mail here because Simon Furman.

He's not a god, you know but uh seriously i just

didn't like the stories either i don't know i

yeah that's about how i think well for me i came

into the the transformers comics a little late

i came into death of optimus prime which starts

the idw to ongoings uh before that i read a few

of the spotlights and i'm sorry i do not Just

reading a few of the spotlights. I think I had

all of the spotlights with the exception of maybe

five of the newer ones that had come out. And

these are the IDW spotlights I'm talking about.

And majority of them are written by Furman. I

don't like his writing style at all. I'm not

a fan of his writing style. I really enjoy a

lot of the things that IDW has done that aren't

written by Furman. Yes. But yeah, it's like I'm...

I can't get behind for him and half. Sometimes

it's brilliant. Sometimes it's, you know, what's

he thinking? It's like he's trying to top all

of his earlier work and it's just not happening.

And you notice he's a Grimlock whore. Oh, God.

Everything has Grimlock in it. Grimlock not stupid.

Steve did. Did you catch any of the Dreamwave

stuff when it first came out? I actually have

all the Dreamwave stuff. I think I do too, like,

packed away somewhere. But, um... I don't know,

you know, back in the... This had to have been,

what, 2000 -something? It was, um, 2000 to, like,

2005. Okay, yeah. So, I mean, back then, there

was no other Transformers creative media anywhere.

There really wasn't. And... when Dreamwave got

the license the art that came out was Amazingly

better than I mean we can all laugh about it

now, you know But exactly, you know, it's like

whoa, it's over detail. That's too blocky blah

blah blah back then that's all there was unless

you know, you want to reprints or the Reprint

what one was so what I'm looking for. It's the

book. It's a they put everything in the book

I just said it earlier collected edition collected

edition Yeah, unless you want to buy those trade

paperback unless you want to buy a trade paperback

of the the older Furman stuff that that's all

you had and And like I said, I didn't like the

Wildman art. So this was this was huge for me

It was like wow and you get you get the art and

you marvel at it This is awesome. And then you

read the stories and you go. Wow, this story

is crap Mean yeah, it was it was just really

really badly written stuff Which was why I mean,

I understand I don't understand why they why

the company disintegrated I'm not sure I haven't

heard all the stories. It was it was the owner.

He embezzled all the money. Oh Well, that makes

sense. Okay, so nobody got paid. Well, I know

I knew nobody got paid I just didn't know what

happened all the money, you know, it's like Wow

house in Malibu and Gave the finger to all his

employees. I spent all the money and then I said

screw them bitches Well, you know that happens

sometimes so many companies are mismanaged. I

understand but You know this was this was heartbreaking

because again, you know people make fun of the

art and I loved it. I you know, I really enjoyed

it I really again didn't like the stories but

the posters they were putting out the the Predaking

posters I'm gonna do Beast Wars at one point.

I mean granted. I like what IDW did better with

Beast Wars, but yeah They were doing cool stuff.

I Would have picked that shit up so quick. Yeah,

they even made our motto look good Which was

hard to do well, you know you they they took

some liberties. They they let the minicons talk

they gave different characters personality Arguably

better personality than in the cartoon. I mean

I enjoyed it. I Well, they brought in the heralds

of Unicron with Galvatron cyclonus and I blame

Furman for that. I think that I'm pretty sure

they brought Furman in and then everything kind

of went to hell. Well, and then it went to Energon.

They transitioned it actually transitioned it

instead of Right because it's still a toy commercial

granted, right? Yeah, I mean and I was fine with

that Yeah You know, like I said, I wasn't terribly

pleased with some of the writing but I think

that was when Simon Furman first came back and

everyone was all excited because it's like who

Simon Furman's back. Well, what what's the Alternative,

you know, the alternative is there the other

crappy writing and all, you know The only good

writing that anyone's ever known has been Simon

Furman So sure bring him back on board. Well,

the only the only really good thing that he actually

did. Yeah nemesis part two I don't think I read

that. I know I know I had Beast Wars. It was

the last episode of Beast Wars. Oh I was about

to say we're not talking about comics. We're

talking about actual Beast Wars. He's directed,

you know, I mean it's It's directed towards part

of the comics because he's a comic writer and

they they threw him a bone and had him write

the last episode Right, right, which that was

about the only good thing that he's written.

It was cool. I mean sure But yeah, it's that

You know the painful mismanagement by pat Lee

They kind of tarnishes the dream waiver and you

know when IDW got a hold of it It's like oh man

the IDW are just gonna suck It was good in a

different way Exactly, it was good in a different

way and not only was it good in a different way

But then they started I think once they started

getting into the ongoing series and then the

writing took such an interesting turn Yeah, James

Roberts is a man that can twist a knife in all

of our hearts. Every single issue. You know,

I always heard stories about a character called

Swerve, you know, and I didn't really pay too

much attention to it because I had heard that...

I think where I really first heard about Swerve

was I think it was one of the TFCon customizing

classes. It was one of the figures for the customizing

class. I'm like, oh, okay. Then I read swerve

and I'm like swerve is the best thing about more

than meets the eye As soon as it got I think

it was issue It's issues 12 through 16 of more

than meets the eye one of those issues. He gets

his his blaster and Yeah, my first blaster. Yeah.

Awesome. Hooray, you scored a direct hit You

missed keep trying The big sign I want to say

it was either on the side of the gun or on the

side of the box It says big grip for small hands

Yeah, this is awesome. Whoever's writing this

and it's not just the writing but whoever actually

wrote it and that wrote but but drew it and made

it come alive on the page just genius, it's pure

genius and and granted I mean I I don't think

I I don't think I liked the The the spotlights

a lot of the spotlights just didn't make any

sense to me because I wasn't watching What was

happening in the rest of the IDW universe? So

the spotlights were just kind of you know, oh

this happened while this other stuff was happening

Well, I didn't read the other stuff. So I didn't

know I was kind of afraid to start collecting

the comics again because I was burned so horribly

by Dreamwave And it wasn't until More than meets

the eye Robots in the skies that I started really

reading the ongoing and everything that came

before that was just a series of like What like

four issue miniseries? It was almost it was almost

like they were afraid to commit Well after that

first ongoing debacle with Mike Costa, can you

blame them that they were afraid to commit? I

know that either Well now you look at them, IDW's

obviously done something good because they've

gotten Turtles and G .I. Joe away from their

original... Yeah, I mean... It's probably...

I'm probably gonna have to do... Over in the

pull bag we did an episode about all about Marvel

and all about DC. I'm probably gonna have to

do one about IDW because just recently they announced...

Completely off topic from Transformers, but they

just announced they're doing a garbage pail kids

comic book So IDW oh You want to get insane and

bring it back around to Transformers? They're

going to be Angry Birds Transformers comics not

collecting I read about that Yeah, Michael Michael

is not a fan of the Angry Birds Transformers

people I'm not fans of any of that crap I like

Angry Birds and I like Transformers, but I'm

not sure if I like Angry Birds. You know, and

I saw the toys. They took pictures at San Diego

Comic Con just recently. And it's like, oh, that's

where the Bot Shots line went to. The Bot Shots

line had bird heads stuck on them. I don't give

a bat's ass, or I mean a bird's ass. A rat's

ass? The bird's ass. Let me find my rat's ass.

Oh, no, wait. You can't have my rat's ass. Because

it's a bird's ass. Because it's a bird's ass.

They stuck a bird on it and it's not a rat anymore.

It's got a weird rat bird. It's got feathers.

Getting back to the... God, it's got... It's

like Cloudy with a Chance and Meatballs rat pigeon

thing. Oh, my God. All right. So getting back

to the comic, Steve, what was your first... Transformers

comic that you ever read I actually read the

Marvel line I don't remember what issues specifically.

I remember my parents used to go take us to the

quarter bin At the comic shop and I had damn

near the entire collection Up until I had to

sell it Wow, I was quite sad about and I was

literally missing ten issues Had freaking issues.

Yeah, I had to sell it for money for a quarter

Yeah, well I sold it for more than that, but

it's still I Kicking myself in the ass now because

a lot of them are gone and I've managed actually

the funny thing is is my brothers Collected a

lot of the same shit so I Actually got about

a third of the collection back because my brothers

were collecting it at the same time I was Yeah,

because we all wanted our own of the same comics

exactly. Yeah, and I managed to get The one brothers

who didn't want it anymore Under the condition

that I didn't sell it and I was like, well hell

no I'm not gonna sell it because I've been trying

to get them all back So I now have them all and

I'm like, yeah Yeah, you know, it's like I could

scour the quarter bins For the next ten years

or I could You know get a CD, you know that I

could pop it on my computer with copies of everything

on it I have the entire series on CD actually,

but someone gave me a copy like Ten years ago

and they're like, oh, hey, you know the here's

all the you know comic books if you're interested

and It was just really rudimentary is like JPEGs

of every page named after the page number and

so you you like had the bring up the next page

and then scroll through it and then bring up

the next page and scroll through it. It was a

huge pain in the ass. And once I discovered that,

man, I just don't like these stories. It just

seemed like a bigger pain in the ass. But yeah,

I have read them. It just wasn't thrilled. I've

found it's not the stories that I don't like

about old comics. It's the art. I found this

out about Punisher books. I found this out about

Spider -Man books. I found this out about Batman

books It's not Punisher. Okay. No rattle. Sorry.

It's just certain I'm my point is with a lot

of the older stuff stuff that's done before like

99 a lot of the art just I can't get into it.

All right. Um, it's just one of those things

Yeah, and I and I didn't grow up with comics

I mean I knew of them and I you know, I believe

I had it might have been Nightfall part one or

part two or something from Batman when I was

a kid, but I don't remember Yeah, it was awesome.

I used to have that as well. Unfortunately, that's

gone too. Yeah but for me getting it like You

know, I was curious, you know, I started reading

these spotlights and yeah the spotlights not

all of them are good But when they are good,

there's did like jazz and mirage. I love those

spotlights Those are some good damn spotlights

for jazz mirage Once I read were just like snippets

of a story and if you had read the other for

issue miniseries, you would understand what was

happening, but Otherwise, why am I reading this?

This is like a supplement to another story that

I didn't read Right, right For me with you know

For me with the Transformers comics, I'm enjoying

more than meets the eye and robots in disguise

But I find that I have to read it in trade more

so than singles. I don't know Maybe it's just

because half the time when I get home from grocery

shopping and going to the comic shop and all

this and all that it's like I am so tired, but

I want to read these comics and I sit there staring

at the same page for five minutes and I'm like,

yeah, I gotta put this down and come back to

it later. But yeah, everything IDW is doing currently

is just amazing. Yeah. Absolutely is. Every single

thing that they've done. I mean, they even did

X -Files meets the Transformers. It was a little

weird, but it was cool. I don't think I can wrap

my head around that. What do you think of Windblade?

Have you read the Windblade? Oh yeah, I've read

Windblade. Over in the pull bag we just wrapped

up a four issue crossover with the Underbase

with Amy and Nicole and all those gals over there.

I like Windblade. I think Windblade adds something

to the Transformers mythos that we didn't have

before. Like a non -aligned character that we

actually like? Yeah, kind of. I mean, sure, we

have Chromia and we had R .C. But let's face

it, R .C. is really the only female Autobot that

is really shown in the books. So it was kind

of okay. Yeah, I mean, she's really the only

one that's really spotlighted I mean you you

don't see moon racers or fire star running around

with RC and that is RC in the IDW versus a Psychopathic

loner. Well, that was the weird thing is IDW

decided that she wasn't a girl Yeah, let's not

get into that. Yeah, it's like wait a minute

with our girl transformers not really a girl

But wait, there are girl transformers now Yeah,

let's not do that. Let's not even get into that

But no wind blade it started off great I thought

you know I was really at the edge of my seat

all three issues by issue for my job was on the

floor and like How is it possible that that person

was? Just saying. I'm just saying, the first

three issues, first three issues of Windblade,

I was on the edge of my seat at the end of every

issue. The fourth issue, I was like, wait, how

did that person do all this stuff? What? That's

Margaret Scott, right? Oh, yeah. Yeah. OK, see,

she's a good writer. She's an excellent writer.

I don't so much like her action scenes, but the

plot lines, the dialogue, love it. Really good

stuff now Sarah Stone Her artist her art kills

me. Yeah, it's like it's it's beautiful I'm arguing

it might not even be transformers art It's it

looks like it should be something more meaningful,

you know, like like she should be doing something

with with more gravitas to it like well something

it's like This is a silly kid's toy, you know,

why is she doing art for this? She should be

doing something like really really amazing But

funny the funny thing is is they're gonna bring

them back. Oh, no. Well, yeah, they're gonna

very successful series I'd be surprised if they

didn't at least do a mini Sarah's doing art duties.

I believe part of the art duties on rid 33 Brass

wind blade story even though the four -issue

miniseries is done. Yeah wind blade story is

gonna continue in robots in disguise issue 33

coming up How are they gonna reconcile her art

with I? Think she's going to be on the book like

oh, you know how she's gonna do the whole book

No, no, you know how they have a flashback Yeah,

sometimes they'll have like Alex doing all the

present -day stuff, and they'll have Livio doing

all the past so i think it's going to look like

dark energize was a dark you know that the other

thing they have four different storylines running

in each one had a different artists yet dark

server trying and i like that but i like that

you know i i i'm greedy i want a whole book of

certain though you know i was think she's and

it was a funny thing we were doing the coverage

for that uh... you know They always, you know,

Amy always likes to bring up the covers. And

I stated from the beginning, this is Marigred

and Sarah's book. I don't care if Alex Milne

or Livio Remindelli or, you know, Brendan Kay.

I don't care if anybody else does a sub cover

or a retail incentive. I'm always going to pick

Sarah's cover because it's her, as an artist,

it's her book. Yeah. I love Guido. I love his

art. I love Alex. Love his art. but I don't like

their renditions of Windblade. It looks like

Ironhide in a dress. Thanks for notice. Thanks

for the visual asshole. But I really like Sarah's

art and I think the cover should look just like

the art inside. What would be interesting is

if they took her and said, you know, why don't

we do Why don't we let her do this Ghostbusters

episode or book or why don't we why don't we

see what how she does on a GI Joe one -off and

Because I it's like it's beautiful. I just want

to see what everything looks like under her brush,

you know, I think that she is doing Sub covers

for primacy, which is the third arc from Flint

Dilley There was autocracy monstrosity and now

primacy. I think she is doing sub covers for

that series And as I mentioned earlier wind blade

will return next year. So that's gonna be interesting

to see where that all goes But yeah, no, I mean

I was loving a wind blade it was it was amazing

I almost wish it was a six issue miniseries instead

of four But yeah, I mean Sarah just knocks it

out of the park just throwing it out there when

more than meets the eye changes up artists, like

they take Alex off for a little bit, and I go,

this is kind of great and on my nerves because

I really think that Alex's art goes well with

the dialogue, right? I would not be upset if

they stuck Sarah in for a few issues, just to

see what it would look like. I mean, same dialogue,

but the change of the art. Yeah, no, I mean that

yeah, it would be interesting to say the least

just gonna say that would be acceptable. Yes

So the other part of the comics that I absolutely

love I only really love two out of these Botcon

the fun pub stuff now, are we talking? Granted

every year at Botcon the box set comes with a

comic book That's what I'm talking about. But

aside from that, you know that they have, I want

to say, biannual membership books? You're talking

about the magazines? No, I'm not talking about

the magazines. Are you talking about the TF Club

magazine? Yeah, yeah. No, I'm not talking about

that. I'm talking about an actual comic book.

Okay, but that stuff... There's like five or

six pages of comics in it Right. No, I'm not

talking about that. I'm talking about which when

you put it all together. It's one big comic exactly

Well, but I never reprint that no, the only place

you can ever read it is in those those issues

Okay. No, those weren't bad They used a lot of

the trance tech Well, they were they kind of

made this a line continuity in it with the the

trance tech before I quit collecting it and They

kind of interconnected everything into this central

place called the hub Wink wink This is way before

the hub. Yeah Wink there. Yeah, it was it was

around the time that Mega Drive hub was around

so um assholes So yeah, they they had this this

hub and then all of these different transformers

from different continuities and would kind of

meet in the central hub and even Beast Wars Megatron

to some degree was hiding in that little area,

but It was kind of a bee in the city. Yeah, I

mean it was which I thought was a little convoy

I am Leo convoy. Yes. Oh shit So So yeah, I mean

it's I Liked it and I really liked the stories

and even when they were kind of jumping around

to different things throughout it But the only

thing it killed me is I didn't want to spend

the subscription fee even though you do get a

free figure every year Yeah, you know that really

comes in handy when you are going to buy con.

Well, yeah for yourself Yeah, it literally pays

for itself. I quit My subscription about the

second year that I didn't go back to VidCon so

a couple years ago And sometimes it's like man

I kind of wish I saw my subscription because

they're they get like a like a preview showing

or You know, they get to see something two weeks

before the rest of the world or like a week before

it leaks, you know Yeah, it's like oh man. How

cool that be No, but I'm talking about the actual

comic books that come with the set my tooth the

the two that I absolutely love the rest for me

and bot con it depends on what the set is it

depends on what the theme is and I If I don't

like the theme I'm not gonna be interested in

the comic that goes along with that theme But

for me the top two are 2008 shattered glass the

original the og shattered glass before they redid

it in 2010 Or 2009 or whatever the hell they

redid it as classics meets shattered glass milking

that dead horse Yes, they are. Very much so.

And 2011's animated the Stunticon job. Those

are the two best out of all of the BotCon comics

for me. I'd have to agree. I did read the Stunticon

job much later, but I did not get that set. But

you know, actually, for me, I would read these

comics and then stick them right back in the

box. And then close up the box and forget I owned

it. Well, yeah, but... You know, I pull them

out every now and then to reread them. So any

other thoughts on comics, Steve? No, that's I

think all I can chat about comics. All right,

we're going to take a quick break and head to

the video game land. Stan Bush here, and you're

listening to the latest episode of All Things

Transformers. Alright, we're back and we're talking

about Transformers in video games. Alright, let's

go around the table. What was the first Transformers

video game we each played? I played the Beast

Wars video game. Of course you would. Well, that's

the first one I owned. Yeah. This was the one

for the PS and the PlayStation, right? The PC.

I still have it, actually. It doesn't play anymore.

Oh, that sucks. Well, I mean, it does, but I

have turned on like mega compatibility mode because

it was like a Windows 95 game. wow it's old yeah

it's old i used to play it on the msn gaming

zone oh my god with three other people like it's

just random and i'd play other people and i i

was i was one of those little bastard kids that

would sit there in the games and you know like

the the equivalent of your call of duty punk

ass games nowadays i was one of those those But

you couldn't actually talk, so you didn't actually

know how old each other were or you couldn't

really type anything. You just, I mean, you could

type stuff after you got out of the game in the

little chat window. But before, you know, when

you went in there, nobody knew anything about

each other. You just went in there and just transformed

and kicked each other's ass. And then, yeah,

that was pretty much it. And the polygons in

that game were horrific. Think I think optimus

primal was probably the best transformed out

of any of them and that's not saying much For

me, I think the first one that I ever played

was I'm gonna have to say the Armada ps2 game

good choice, sir You know, I was kind of out

of Transformers around this time. I was completely

out of it. And I got back into it and I'm like,

wait, what is this? Why is Optimus Prime all

the voice of Optimus Prime? So there is that.

But yeah, that game was so cool. I mean, the

graphics on it. It had a lot of replay value.

Oh, very much so. It was the first Transformers

game worth playing again. Yeah. The other ones

were like, who cares? And then Armada comes along

and then unfortunately we didn't get another

good game until... War for Cybertron and Fall

of Cybertron and everything else is still shit.

Yeah. Well, you know that first movie game wasn't

that bad. Wasn't that bad, but I bought it and

it was too damn difficult at points. Like I got

to a certain point and there was just nothing

I could do to beat it or get past that point.

I was going to say, was that the part where you're

driving down the tunnel? It was just past the

tunnel. So you're Bumblebee, you're driving through

a tunnel, except there's debris. And every time

you hit the debris, you spin out of control wildly

and die. And if you're lucky, there's a fireball

chasing you, by the way. And when you get out

of the tunnel, the fireball dissipates and you

get to do it again three times. And I want to

say I cheated. Well, it's almost like the Super

Nintendo Aladdin game when you're on the magic

carpet and you're flying through the lava tunnel.

Yeah. It's one. Yeah ko ko and there was there

was a there was a it was called a trainer Program

that you could install on top of it and it would

it would turn off the timers So there was a there

was a level where you had to play as Scorponok

And that was as hard as hell. I I could I could

not beat the timer. So I turn the timer off But

I mean, I still beat the game, but I cheated

a little. But no, War for Cybertron probably

one of the best games ever. Yeah, I loved it.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with that. I got up to

the point where that final battle with Trypticon.

Was that the final battle? And War for Cybertron?

Yeah, end of chapter six. Yeah. Oh, all right

then. You're thinking Fall of Cybertron if you're

thinking something different. Well, no, I didn't

realize that was the end boss. I mean, that was

an epic battle, I remember. Yeah, it was an epic

rap battle. Epic rap battles of Cybertron! You

know what I liked about War for Cybertron, though,

is you get to choose. You had three characters

to choose from. And they didn't do that in Fall

of Cybertron. You just had one character to play.

And that was it. And I know you had multiples

didn't you you were able to be sure Yeah, and

fall of Cybertron. Yeah, I Think you could pick

pick who I had different characters. Yes, you

could Okay, but it was well how it was is war

for Cybertron let you pick at certain points

in the story and Same thing with fall of Cybertron.

Unfortunately fall of Cybertron if another character

came in that you were set to replace you know

become that character instead then you would

drop off that character but they gave you like

at certain points in the story they'd give you

options to choose different characters if they

happen to be in that that setting so you know

i remember fall of cybertron being like you know

you started off you played bumblebee and then

next you played optimus prime and you know certain

Certain chapters would let you play as you know,

you had to play to someone else and you got to

play with a goodly amount of people I mean, you

know the jazz Chapter was really cool. The vortex

chapter was really cool You know when you finally

get to combine in a Bruticus and it's a really

short chapter But you're basically stomping around

and you know stomping on people that was amazing

Because we've never done that before and then

later on you get to play as Megatron when he

makes his return. But during war for Cybertron,

each chapter said, which guy do you want to be?

Do you want to be Starscream or Thundercracker

or Skywarp? Right. Or, you know, do you want

to be Megatron or Soundwave or Breakdown? Breakdown

never made any sense. Why would you want to be

Breakdown if you can play as Megatron or Soundwave?

And granted, it didn't do much for the gameplay.

Mean, you know one's faster and and less shielded

one slower with You know more firepower, but

honestly you still got to get from point a to

point B Right. Yeah, it's not like yeah, it's

not like you can choose a different path or play

a different way You know, it's it's I guess it's

depending on if you enjoy playing as the brawler

or like the sniper that type of thing But I enjoyed

it because you know the dialogue would Dialogue

actually change. I mean it seemed like the dialogue

changed a little bit So to accommodate your character.

Yeah, when it points. Yeah But yeah, I mean I

when I got fall of Cybertron I went back and

played war for Cybertron and played through the

whole thing and then played fall of Cybertron

and really all the differences were just Highlighted

for you at that point. Oh, yeah. Well for me

in war for Cybertron I am I've never actually

beaten the damn thing cuz Dragonzord kept killing

me I swear to God as soon as I played that final

Tripticon level where he turns and swings his

tail I kept seeing Dragonzord instead of Tripticon

because it looks like Dragonzord from Power Rangers

But no I could never I could never get past that

final final battle with Tripticon Wow all you

have to do is just bitch slap him right in the

face I remember it being hard. I don't remember

it being possible, though. Well... You also called

it Godzilla! Yeah, but I really like that. I

didn't play, uh, like the Wii version or the,

uh, portable version, you know? I mean, I guess

those were different. The Wii version was. Yeah?

Because it was Cybertron Adventures. Yes, I never

I never played that but the fall of Cybertron

the multiplayer mode I stayed up late every night

playing that Because it was so much fun. I think

it was like six on six on six on six teams in

just a free -for -all battle and That was so

much fun You're playing the online version Fall

of Cybertron? Yeah. I have once, when Xbox had

the free weekend, I played it online against

a bunch of people that I didn't know got my ass

handed to me pretty much. Oh, yeah. Well, I think

you start off at a certain level and you get

just... Crap for bonuses and weapons and then

as you gain levels you get more weapons and such

I Will say though if you play the guy that turns

invisible Yeah, you're as good as gold because

they're coming from and you can blow them away

Yeah, unfortunately only last a little while.

I know that's the that's why I ended up liking

the Jets. I could get away Yeah, oh Well, it

just seems like You know you get people who know

the terrain and Then they're you know sniping

at you No matter what you think whoo. I'm doing

pretty good here, but no they know where to go

But it was fun as if you put yourself in a especially

at the lower levels you put yourself in as a

supporting role and So you find yourself a guy

who's clearly a tank you know and then you chase

after him in in like You know cleric mode or

whatever you use the healing ray on him as he's

mopping up bad guys And then you can kind of

pick off stragglers, you know what when he's

not as badly messed up That type of thing that

that's served that that strategy served me well

in my lower levels until I got more powerful

than I could be the tank Yeah Well, it's sad

because as adults we can say, hey, I understand

the strategy here. I see why you'd want to be

in teams of three and back each other up and

watch the corners and make sure that your buddies

are covered and that type of thing. I'm pretty

sure I spent the majority of the time in arenas

with 10 -year -olds who just had no concept.

strategy or you know or backing each other up

it's just like hey I'm going this way something

shiny is over there you know and then they get

their ass blown up yeah it's like well I guess

I'll just stay here with no support at all and

hope I don't get killed you know turn invisible

or something I don't know they had they had someone

bite their shiny metal ass Got an energon goodie

shoved right up in there come and get it. Oh

Jesus Yeah Has anybody Has anybody played rise

of the dark spark? No, no, I have no interest

in it It looks cool, but it basically combines

the movie games and in the in the the Tigger

games the tea the high moon games Thank you.

You know, and you know, that's about how I feel

about High Moon didn't do this one. And so I'm

not sure how much faith I have in it. It came

out and I thought, oh, I should play that. And

I didn't. And I think in a year or so, Steam

will have a summer sale and sell it for 10 bucks

and I'll buy it. Ditto. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I

think it looks cool combining the worlds, like

the movie world and the high moon world, but

I don't know how well it's going to be. I would

have rather them, instead of doing Rise of the

Dark Spark, I would have rather had them do whatever

the next evolution would be after Fall of Cybertron.

You know, and that's kind of what we were promised

because they had this whole chart laid out where

it's like, OK, we started off with You know war

for Cybertron and that's that's here in this

timeline and then here and Well, I guess technically

Technically we are in that period then because

the next period would have been either either

because they're in the arc They're escaping from

Cybertron. So it would have either been on the

way to earth Which I guess from Canon, there's

not a whole lot to that. They went through the

wormhole and then they both crashed, or both

of the ships crashed, and then they slept for

four million years. Or it's either that, the

very short trip from the wormhole to Earth where

they were all dying and whatnot, or what happens

when they're on Earth? And let's say they changed

their mind and decided they made a pit stop somewhere.

They stopped to go to Cain land I Don't know

I have no idea what it would be about but but

now they're like, hey, let's do both we don't

Yeah, that's crazy The call die, no, I'm here

the have you somebody Good see I was gonna say

have you you played the transformers universe?

Game the new multiplayer online he knew mo No

No, I've played it. I've played it. I've had

it since it was a beta. I think it's still in

beta Beta for years, it's not been in for years.

Actually, it's only been in for about six months

if that But they've had a closed beta probably

two months ago, and then they had an open beta

about three weeks ago. I'm not a fan of it. It's

akin to Star Trek Online for me. It's just crap.

And then you have these people that are just

there that... blow you away. That sucks. I should

say that blows. It doesn't blow. That's why I

uninstalled it and I went back to playing Unreal

Tournament 3 online which I discovered I can

do again and I know the maps very well so I destroy

people. Nothing like going back to an old game

and destroying new people. Not to go too far

off topic. I've had Unreal Tournament 3 since

it came out, brand new. I bought it for the PC.

And then when I got my Xbox 360, I bought it

used for $6 compared to the $60 I paid for the

PC version, brand new. Usually when my wife passes

out after watching a movie, I play on the Xbox

360 with these certain... particular levels,

so now when I play online, I decimate everyone

because I know everything about the levels. Wow.

Yeah. You killed it. It's dead, Jim. It's dead.

Alright, anything else on the video games? Not

as far as I can tell. I wish there was more good

ones than bad ones I'm really hoping High Moon

does another one Yep, hard to say, but I hope

so too because I still play Fall of Cybertron

Yeah, me too Fusion candidates for everyone!

That's right, that's right You know, until Will

Friedle came along and voiced Bumblebee in Prime

and now the new series, I really wanted, if they

were going to finally give Bumblebee a voice,

I really wanted them to use Johnny Young Bosch

from the War for Cybertron, follow Cybertron

Games. Because I thought he was a great Bumblebee

voice. This is Bumblebee! At least he had a voice

this time. Instead of Bumblebee -ta -ta -ta -ta

-ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta

-ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta -ta

-ta -ta -ta -ta I hate that. I do too. I hate

R2B2. Oh lord. Alright. So coming up next time

on All Things Transformers, we're going to kick

off a series, a five -part series of countdowns.

The first of those being our top ten favorite

Transformers episodes from any and all generations.

So you gotta pick 10 favorite episodes out of

the past 30 years. Good luck. That's too much

like work. Oh, whatever. Yeah, you made me think.

I'm too broke to get paid for this. Oh, shit,

I don't make any money. Oh, boy. It's like my

second job I don't get paid for. Good Lord. So

I'm going to hire like someone else to choose

these for me and just, you know, no. So what

you're saying is you're going to have a Japanese

lip sync. You're going to have somebody that's

going to be on the episode. You're going to come

on and be like, hey, how's it going? And my favorite

episodes. And he's going to go, order the episode.

And then just start rambling off things. No.

Well, My favorite episode is The Road to the

Road, and I like that episode because it has

shit. Wow, you're not sounding like a Japanese

person. I'm not trying to. You're starting to

sound like Mojo Jojo for crap's sake. I am Mojo

Jojo! Okay, on that note, folks, this is All

Things Transformers, episode 43. Take it away,

Steve. Until next time, I will destroy your spark.

Next time, the countdown begins!
