Altered geek From Star Wars to Star Trek, comics
to tech Hello and welcome to Altered Geek, I'm
your host Steve and see Phillips or Steve Megatron
if that's your preference Yeah, I recently had
a interesting conversation on Twitter Just to
kind of preface this Between somebody more or
less when I was asking, you know, what would
you do if you had a geeky name. And I was kind
of going, you know, for a time I thought about
kind of dropping the moniker Steve Megatron despite
my having used it since 2007. And going for a
more professional, you know, use my real name
type thing. But it's stuck. I mean, I've had
it for over ten years and, you know, I am The
Altered Geek now, like in 2013 I kind of scared
you dumbing myself, you know, The Altered Geek,
but that's more of an overarching title, the
whole Steve Megatron thing, kind of. Funny enough,
when I go to conventions, I have people saying,
Almighty Megatron, and you know, things like
that, or... Hey, it's Steve Megatron, and I'm
like, who are you people? It's kind of funny
when you're trying to put face to name at conventions.
I mean, this hasn't happened in a while, but
it's really funny when somebody puts either the
voice or... I even had it happen in college about
a year or two ago. I was kind of saying that
I was co -owner of Keycast Radio and... I would
record on various podcasts and they're like,
I've heard you before. They're like, it's awesome
to meet you, blah, blah, blah. I was kind of
taken aback and I was like, well, thank you,
nice to meet you too. It's kind of funny. So
I said that despite it all that I've been influenced
by the media since I was about five years old.
I recently saw something come up on my Facebook
about how the seeds of the future lie buried
in the past and that phrase couldn't be more
true. I always dreamed of working in radio. I
always wanted to work in radio. I always wanted
to do voiceover. Granted, I'm not actually officially
on the air unless you consider podcasts a on
the air form. I consider it... Pre -recorded
radio type stuff like I it would be nice to be
on the actual radio. I'm not gonna lie Hosting
hosting something similar to this or this exact
show. I I would be down for that as well but
I'm I'm definitely Doing what I was doing as
a kid and I used to run around with this I don't
know about ten inch long Cassette player recorder,
Walkman, tape deck type thing. I would record
myself playing like I was doing my own radio
show. I would read, I would do voices, I would
do a variety of things like that. Then it's funny
that coming back to 2005 of doing the fan dubs
and then 2007 starting podcasting, I've been
essentially doing what I did as a kid, only I
really enjoy it. So it's kind of entertaining
that kind of all roads are kind of, you know,
seeds of the future lie buried in the past, so
that Beast Machines phrase kind of holds true.
And then, of course, like I said, the Steve Megatron
thing. I used to be Optimus II Primal, because
that was just dumb. That was my initial online
persona. And then I became Optimus Flash because
it just sounded better and then I became Ultimus
Prime in a sense But then I quickly changed into
Megatron and then Steve Megatron and so it's
kind of been one of those things that followed
me Although when I used to play Half -Life and
Counter -Strike online or at LAN parties with
My skill center thing for high school I used
to be I would alternate between two names. I
would be treeops and avatar, and I still use
both of them to some extent today. Treeops is
like tripod, but it's tryops. So I used that
moniker. Usually I used avatar to get people
used to me, and then I would switch to tryops
to... Basically take them all out. I would take
out all the teachers. I'd take out everybody
I just changed my name before I'd go back in
the game and it was awesome because people were
like who is this guy? And yeah, so anyways I
took on the persona of Steve Megatron and it's
kind of stuck and I thought about I've been kind
of toying with it for the last year of getting
rid of that name and then just going solely with
my name and Somebody that I follow on Twitter
and that follows me as another fellow comic book
geek movie nerd actually write stuff for the
batman universe dot net he he says if you have
a sweet handle like Steve Megatron you keep that
handle it's the max powers principle and I was
like yeah thanks you know it's it's just kinda
crazy you know that I'm being told to essentially
keep it because it's awesome and it's it's just
it's Kind of cool that I'm known as that. I've
kind of learned to accept it, and that's kind
of the funny thing. This episode I'm going to
preface it with. It's going to have a little
bit of news, but it's going to be a lot of basically
unbinding and unwinding. It's going to be more
of a down -to -earth episode this week just because
we're doing the topical stuff, myself and Mike
Powers, which I hope everybody's enjoying. I've...
During the the past week and a half. I've been
putting out different Things to kind of promote
the show to promote other things and I've I've
done the The the whole thing with Pre scheduling
comments and questions on Facebook, which has
been interesting because I've not been one for
those things, but it's kind of helped out because
during the the New Year's week between Christmas
and New Year's and then New Year's weekend, I
put out some varying questions so that I could
have kind of a nice little grab bag in this episode.
Plus, I've kind of been safeguarding, collecting
all the Facebook, Twitter, and website comments
specifically for this episode because I wanted
to kind of have a more, like I said, down -to
-earth episode that's just kind of not Primarily
news focused. Yes, there's a lot of geeky news
out there, you know depending on your your take
and then of course we're getting on the the Final
week before shows start returning like this next
week Star Trek Discovery will be back which I'll
be doing future and perfect for again So that'll
that'll be out. I'll also be doing all things
transformers again which I just started again
last week and Legends will come back at some
point. That one's not really my highest priority
at the moment. This show is my top priority with
All Things Transformers and Future Perfect being
tied for second. So yeah, I've been having fun
with podcasting again and it's... Between the
the whole name conversation just having conversations
in general which I think that's something that
I've kind of gotten away with or away from for
some time I'm not entirely sure why I think it
was just I I was having a pity party to myself
and Just because the stress of the holidays I
had multiple flights that I had to take over
the past two months and It's just been kind of
a roller coaster the last two months and so like
I've just been on high high stress levels between
everything going on plus there's some huge things
coming to Geekcast Radio this year, which will
be having a GCRN episode kind of divulging it.
Optimus Solo has been working on a history project
of sorts for Geekcast Radio for the past several
years and it's finally going to make its debut
and It will be in a GeekCast radio episode. So
that's kind of what we've been teasing a little
bit there and In my eyes, I've I'm very curious
in seeing what he has to offer in this I know
that he's been going through the entire catalog
of GeekCast radio content to get an entire count
of how many episodes everybody's been on, certain
types of episodes, review shows. He's gone through
the archives of review shows, of everything,
and I've been digging in the archives, which
I should preface with the archives of GeekCast
Radio content will be eventually returning this
year to the website. So like the Beast Unleashed
and... TFG1 podcast, the transformation animation,
a lot of the other podcasts, and I know this
stuff could be in GeekCast Radio, and I'm just
kind of giving a brief overview here, but it'll
be nice because people will be able to listen
to it again, but it'll go to our, instead of
our backend file system that we used to store
everything on up until 2005, and even up to the
last year and a half. We've been going to exclusively
the blog talk radio linkage, which has been beneficial
because not only do we get to monetize and try
to basically make this pay for itself. I would
love to make more off of it, but it's not like
the highest priority. I want to have quality
content and if the money comes, it comes, but
I also want the best. on demand resources for
it, should have a lot more. Once iTunes gets
off their rears, a lot more analytics on knowing
what exactly people are listening to and how
long and everything else for the iTunes content.
Which, speaking of consumption of the podcast,
I posed the question, of how do you consume the
podcast and from where? And the reason I asked
this was because I had an issue on the day that
we released the Disney and Fox possibilities
in their future streaming service. Two things
were I had mis -scheduled something wrong around
this time. And what had happened is the blog
talk radio the way that it creates the episodes,
it puts the date in them. So if I say I'm going
to change the episode from the fourth to the
second, it still has the fourth in the URL, so
it doesn't work. That actually happened. The
other thing is I was going to stop posting this
on ThisWeekInGeek .com. The reason why I was
going to do that is because one, I've been in
the background, I don't know if anybody's listened
to Mike the Birdman Dodd, he did have a quick
recap episode of things to come and Alex over
there on This Week in Geek is going to be taking
over. I have been the webmaster for the website
for the past three years and I inherited a mess.
I'm not trying to throw them under the bus, it's
just there's been a lot of hands over on that
site, and the website was a mess. I also had
to move it from Snowball's server to Birdman's
server, and that was a lot of fun as well, trying
to get that colossal nightmare of organization
or misorganization of files in the backend. WordPress
was not the issue, it was the files. Because
of that, I've already started a blog talk radio
login where I've imported their entire catalog
into the back end. I didn't realize that iTunes
at some point, because the website was only putting
10 episodes on Twig, I am getting back to the
consumption of the podcast. It was limited to
like 10 episodes and so I boosted that so it
plays like 100 now on iTunes. But anyways, the
episodes themselves, as far as Twig is going
to, in the future change, I'm working with their
team to make the transition so that I am no longer
responsible for any of Twig. I have a lot of
other things on my plate and that's just not
one that I want to tackle. Plus, Being it's been
around longer than Geekcast Radio, I felt that
they should be managing their own content. I
feel that it should be a Canadian run website
and not run by... Because the whole premise was
it was started by Canadians, run by Canadians,
and then we were just kind of there. We were
kind of guesting and helping, not necessarily
running. And we have Geekcast Radio, which I
consider both of them to be partner, like sister
sites of each other. And so... My dilemma is
that we're coming up with our own changes to
boost Twig and boost Gatecast Radio at the same
time, to grow them stronger, to build out their
libraries, to kind of cut the fat of the old
stuff, and kind of start anew, in a sense. That's,
again, kind of playing to the Seeds of the Future
by Live Variant in the past, or Transform and
Transcend is the other part of it, which is another
Beast Machine part of that quote. So, I was going
to pull this podcast. Point being, all of the
GeekCast Radio podcasts, the only ones that should
be theoretically over there and on GeekCast Radio
are Future Imperfect, Mayhem Mikes, and The Cyber
Dragon Ball. Those are really the only crossover
shows that should be on both networks. And that's
because the Cyber Dragon Ball is a thing, granted
it only had one episode between myself and Birdman
Dodd. There's another episode, another show,
they may have mics, which is Ryan, Dodd, and
Blanchard. So that's a given that that'll be
on both. And then... Future Imperfect originally
started out with Dodd and myself. It was my name
creation for it. He approached me for it. And
because we haven't had consistent content on
it, I decided to take the wheels and run with
it. So you're going to see a lot more episodes
of that, like I said, but that's on its own feed
now. So you can actually subscribe to it on iTunes
under Future Imperfect. It will be under the
main Twig feed, but it won't be It'll be its
own podcast. It's still going to link to the
blog talk radio RSS feed. So, that being said,
Altered Geek, I was going to pull from there,
but I didn't realize that people still listen
to the podcast through This Week in Geek. I wasn't
sure because no one has ever commented on...
AlteredGeek on This Week in Geek. It's mostly
been on AlteredGeek .com, GeekcastRadio .com,
and Facebook and Twitter. I wasn't sure if anybody
was actually consuming it from there. Like I
said, the analytics don't exactly tell you anything
about that because they're just not there yet
on the services that we use. I wasn't sure what
was going on there. Anyways, I stopped posting
episodes to This Week in Geek for a minute there,
and Jennifer let me know that, you know, she
says, hi guys, I don't know if you're working
on the website or not, but I'm not seeing a spot
on Twig to play or download this podcast. On
the AlterGeek site, when I tried to download
it, there was no file found, which was, again,
the URL issue. And it won't play, but on the
RSS feed, I was able to download it and listen
to it there, which... Again, that's probably
the best method is to go to the RSS feed and
just subscribe to it there and just download
it that way. Again, it's kind of a cross promotion
between AlterGeek, GeekHast Radio, and This Week
in Geek. I'm going to keep it on This Week in
Geek as long as they want it to stay there, but
once they make their full transition, it may
or may not be there anymore. just depending on
what they want to do with the website. And that's
perfectly okay. But I'm giving everybody the
preemptive notice here that if it does disappear
from This Week in Geek, you can still get it
on alteredgeek .com and geekcastradio .com as
well as the RSS feed, iTunes, whatever. It's
all over the place, literally. You can get it
on Stitcher, you can get it on SoundCloud, you
can get it on... Speaker, you can get it on iHeartRadio,
iTunes, Google Play, there's a lot of different
places. Most of the GeekCast Radio library is
on everything, so you can pretty much find it
wherever you want to consume it. So, she did
let me know that she usually gets it from Twig,
and then I did re -import the past few episodes
onto Twig so that it's there. Again, things will
probably change, like I said. And it's kind of
good to know. And then Scanner51 lets me know
that he uses Stitcher for 95 % of the podcasts
and 4 % from Google Play and 1 % is using on
the websites, which is good to know because I
don't really get that analytics. So putting that
out there is kind of helpful. Brad lets me know
that he gets it from the Apple app iTunes. Like
I said, that's probably the best method plus
I get to see how long people listen or or I Get
the best like if you have Apple and you use iTunes
It's probably the best method because I'll get
the best analytics from it and the best notice
once Apple finally gets off their rear and puts
all of my podcasts under one account because
I currently don't have analytics for any of them
and they're slow to get back to people, like
terribly slow. I've been trying to get this done
for three months and it's just, I'm beating my
head against a wall. Jennifer says she uses the
app Podcast Addict or directly from the website.
So it's all good information to know as far as
the podcast is concerned. I wasn't entirely sure
where that was going, so. I'm going to take a
quick break here, come back on the other side
with all of the listener feedback on the past
several episodes since we've been doing all these
20 minute episodes. A little question to ponder
before we go to break is, what is your geeky
passion? What are you geeking out to right now?
Some of the other topics that may eventually
pop up on the podcast are discontinued products
were sat or gone. Cinematic disappointments,
10 geeky things you want to do before you die,
magazines as revived as podcasts, and like I
said, what's geeky to you? So if you have any
comments, questions, or suggestions on any of
those topics, let us know. And if you have any
suggestions for 20 -minute episodes between myself
and Powers or perhaps another guest of Geekcast
Radio or somewhere else, I would be definitely
open to hearing more of them. But until then,
I'll be right back on the other side of this
break. And we're back. So getting into the feedback,
these will be in a little out of order, but that's
just because of where they're posted. So going
to geekcastradio .com on the 20 minutes of SNES
Mini and links you can go for more games, which
was released... a couple days before Christmas.
TFG1Mike says, great stuff, guys. The SNES was
my system. Yes, my cousins had NES and I had
COF, or Sega Master System, but the SNES was
the one thing I wanted for Christmas in 1992.
Super Mario World, Zelda, F -Zero, Donkey Kong
Country, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4, Turtles
in Time and Mega Man X were all my favorite games.
Too bad TMNT wasn't on the mini. However, what
there is is impressive, most impressive. So I
have to agree, I mean, I love Mega Man X, I love
Turtles in Time, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario
World. If any of those games, like I haven't
looked at the game list recently, but if any
of those aren't on there, I would probably do
what Mike Powers did. putting them on my device,
if that was the case. I used to be a big emulator
player, but I also owned the systems at one point,
so it really wasn't that big of a deal at the
time. But yeah, I mean, it's been fun to kind
of reminisce on that with the whole system, and
I'm kind of glad that they have it. I do think
that the N64 Mini will be coming this year. But
again, we'll see. So going back to the 20 minutes
of Fox and and Disney and Fox possibilities in
their future and streaming service, which is
the day after Christmas Brad says I do want more
of the streaming service to offer downloadable
content like Netflix does I think that's brilliant
for someone on the road all the time. I have
to agree because If I had had like because when
I traveled to Chicago to Dallas for work, and
then when I went from Michigan to Chicago for
Mike's wedding, it would have been nice to have
had content downloaded to my device instead of
having to use up my internet, my data plan. I
have to agree, I would much rather do that as
a method of watching content over having to Try
and do it on The streaming service plus I don't
like buffering and like I said the airports like
Chicago both the airports at Chicago were Terrible
for Wi -Fi They were just atrocious Dallas was
awesome for their their airport Wi -Fi But both
the Chicago ones even Flint had better Wi -Fi.
I mean granted. I wasn't there very long, but
That's pretty bad one Flint, Michigan has better
Wi -Fi and set up at their mini airport compared
to Chicago's two big ones. But yeah, I definitely
would love to see more of that come into play
in the future. However, I don't know how they'll
do that without creating some way. Like I could
see if you had to log on for authentication purposes
to play it, which would be OK, but like streaming
it would just be terrible. And then. Brad also
says, while the new Disney channel might be the
largest library to stream, I wouldn't pay $50
for it. All the Disney films I like, I have on
DVD and have made digital copies of, I'm not
its target audience. I'm kind of in the same
boat, I mean, but at the same time, I've gotten
rid of 90 % of my DVD collection because one,
it takes up space, two, my kids, we don't really
let them watch a lot of stuff, especially more
modern television or films. So it's got to go
through a certain filter, and then there's certain
things that just terrify the crap out of my kids,
and so we don't even deal with it. We just got
rid of it all. So I wouldn't pay for it. I don't
know if I would actually get the Disney service,
but it would kind of depend. I mean, I know they've
got all of Fox's library, which is more of what
I'd be interested in than the Disney content.
But I guess we'll see. I mean the other nice
thing about Disney is you'd have Star Wars, too
So I mean you get a couple things going for it,
but I own all the Star Wars films so again. I'm
not I'm not entirely sure what I do in that boat.
I It's pretty giant Archive that Disney has just
entered themselves into I mean they already had
their own giant archive, but adding Fox to it.
That's just nuts I wouldn't pay $50. I can't
see anybody spending $50 a month for it though
So I guess we'll find out in the future. Maybe
we'll find out this year when They announced
more information on it since it's coming out
2019 Well, so I mentioned that obviously this
episode is going to have a bunch of feedback
so In very light on the news and topical pieces
because there's really not all that much that
came out this week and so Myself and Mike we
recorded two instead of three of our 20 minute
episodes, which will be out next week but Yeah,
Brad says enjoying the 20 minute single theme
shows makes it easier to leave feedback if it's
a topic I like totally agree with you there and
glad that this is a more digestible Way of doing
it and glad you're enjoying the podcast as a
whole plus the 20 minute episodes Then going
on from there, we have the benefits of trailers
and the failures that come from them. Jennifer
mentions that I don't go to a lot of movies anymore,
so I really like the trailers or brands to go
to it. Or if I am not sure of one I may read
some reviews and if it sounds decent I may go
on a cheap ticket day example The Dark Tower
since I love the series, but I wasn't in love
with the trailer I waited for the reviews and
they weren't the best so I'm just waiting to
rent the movie at the library or something That
I can kind of agree with like if it's something
that It looks questionable in the trailer or
if it's something that you know, you may be interested
in or in that scenario I definitely agree because
there's a lot of movies that I Look at the trailers
and I look at some of the the buzz surrounding
them and kind of make a judgment call on whether
I watch it as a rental or if I watch it as a
theater thing And primarily because I don't get
out much, or at least out to the theater, I watch
everything when it comes on streaming. I do have
a local family video rental place literally about
a quarter of a mile from my house. So it's quite
nice, honestly, to have that option. If I decide
to go in there, but I'm cheap too, so I don't
spend money on rentals We do have a red box as
well, which is literally right next door with
the Kroger grocery store, so it's Very easy to
to find something to watch that being said She
continues by saying, but sometimes when I get
movies from the library and I don't know what
to watch, I go to the foreign movie section and
just grab some movies that I have no clue who
the directors or actors are or even the brand,
but I'm just totally basing the pick by the descriptions
on the case, since at my library I can rent them
free or really cheap if brand new, so I'm not
wasting a lot of money if they're bad. but just
time. I admit I got some rotten eggs, but others
I just loved and wouldn't have known otherwise.
No, that's pretty much a good way to go into
it. If you're kind of just running in blind based
on the descriptions, that's a good thing. Myself
personally, I don't typically get into a lot
of foreign movies, so I never really look in
that section. I have opened up over the past
year or two more documentaries, more based off
true story stuff, more things that aren't necessarily
based on a franchise. So in that regard, I've
kind of branched out. But yeah, that's not really
a bad way to go about it when you come right
down to it. And then moving on to our 2018 predictions
episode that we did. which came out earlier this
week. Brad says some interesting predictions
for 2018. I can see all that happening. As for
Disney buying a toy company, I completely agree
with Michael. It's easier for them to just license
properties out. I do predict that there will
be no news on Tron 3, Ghostbusters 2, or Ace
Ventura 3. And please, no news of It 2, Jigsaw
2, or Pacific Rim 3. The originals are great.
Let's not franchise everything. Eh, I think that's
kind of... Hollywood's goal at this point is
to franchise everything. And I do see the merit
of Disney and the toy thing in me being wrong
there. However, I do think that we're going to
get it too. I know that they mentioned that in
2017, the tail end there. Jigsaw 2 is technically
still a continuation of the Saw franchise. So
it's technically Saw 8. And then it's not a reboot
per se it's it's more of a continuation because
it takes place ten years after the entire jigsaw
saga and The even though there's like some flashbacking
with the whole thing which takes place even before
which is really weird But I can see them kind
of continuing it, but I don't really know if
it has much legs to go on Pacific Rim 3 that'll
probably get greenlit as well. It's not really
surprising to me that they're going to franchise
everything because that's really all Hollywood's
got left in them as far as feature films while
TV is getting the benefit of the overload in
the theater. And that they can tell more cohesive
stories in television land. Like for instance,
I would rather see Tron become a television series.
Exclusive to and this is kind of a prediction
since you brought Tron up They may turn that
into a television series on their streaming service
because that may be a draw for them Being that
Disney owns it so that that could be a possibility
Which I would be totally down for if they could
get the original cast Or the people from legacy
to join on Ghostbusters 2 I sincerely doubt that's
gonna go anywhere because that film flopped and
then Ace Ventura 3 I don't think that they're
gonna well technically they had that if you had
Ace Ventura jr Which was technically the third
one. I know they're planning on rebooting it
though Which I'm not in favor for it all because
I loved the originals and in today's day I don't
think it would survive. It's kind of like that
whole thing with Police Academy Where they were
going to do an eighth film with the original
cast that were still alive and then it just kind
of Fell off the bandwagon. It was never heard
of again and then they were talking about rebooting
it and then you never heard about it again and
then Same thing kind of happened with Bill and
Ted 3 I or Beetlejuice 2 I don't think we'll
see any of those either or anything other than
what we've already seen news wise, I think it's
going to be more of the same. Yeah, we have an
idea for it, but you know, it's just getting
the whatever set up for it, and I don't think
that it'll end up happening. But yeah, there's
a lot that can happen in 2018, so I guess we'll
have to kind of wait and see. So I'm going to
come back on the other side of this with some
geeky news and some kind of conversation on some
cool tech gadgets. So we'll be back right after
this. And we're back. So on the tech side of
things, I just saw something on Windows Central
on social media. They have this kind of inventive
USB 3 .0 adapter, which is five bucks apparently,
to connect a SATA cable to USB. So essentially
you can take any internal drive, For instance,
if you have a solid state hard drive, you can
just plug it right in on this device and access
your SATA hard drives without ever having to
plug them on the inside of the machine, which
I think is actually kind of cool because I happen
to have an extra one and I would like to be able
to use it. Although my external hard drive is
much larger, I've got a terabyte external hard
drive and then I've got a two terabyte one as
well. I have a 120 gig SATA SSD drive and I have
an SSD in my computer but I would be able to
clone my drive easily by doing this. Not only
that, but if I needed to get something off a
particular drive that's not able to be plugged
in on a SATA port on the inside of the machine,
like one of my hard drives I have, it would allow
me to actually open it. So I think that that's
actually a really cool product to have. Not to
mention that, USB 3 .2 is supposedly able to
use the same cables as the existing USB Type
-C cable, which they're claiming are future -proof
because they're able to have this basically reversible
connector with the promise of up to 100 watts
of power and up to 10 gigabytes per second data
transfer speeds. So basically you can double
using the same cable. The USB 3 .0 promoter group
announced that it's preparing to release the
3 .2 specs as the USB -C cables were designed
to support multi -lane operation with USB 3 .1
generation 2 supporting up to 10 gigs using two
lanes, five gigs per lane. 3 .2 doubles that
so you can use You can have allowing up to 10
gigabytes data rates per lane and giving a total
of 20 gigs or two gigabytes per second transfer
speeds, which would be awesome because most of
my, which sucks because my computer doesn't have
the USB -C port in it. So I'd have to get an
adapter if I was going to do that or a SATA or
a PCI Express slot for the inside of my machine
to be able to do this Because my motherboard
is slightly old at this point It's functional.
So why replace it? I'll wait until another year
or two before I upgrade my computer A lot of
it's still usable to some degree I can upgrade
more but it's it's at this point. My machine
is like five years out of date if not more so
The point is you'll be able to use this existing
super speed USB for more transfer data rates
and in faster speeds which I think is much needed
in this day and age where we have terabyte hard
drives and the need to back things up not only
in the cloud but on another physical platform
and I've never trusted Physical media or digital
media in any case. I always keep doubles and
triples of stuff because I can't trust it and
So yeah, I have Flash drives that have gone bad
on me With data I've had CDs that I've burned
in the past that have gone bad on me or sections
of it have gone bad I've had DVDs that I Own
that I cloned and I've had those go bad on me
depending on how old they were it's kind of interesting
the stuff that goes bad and then how long it
takes and then the need to back it up on a newer
piece of equipment and so time is everything
when you're trying to do that I know when I'm
backing up my computer it's a royal pain trying
to go from hard drive to external so I don't
know, there's a lot of stuff changing. Speaking
of changing, there's actually a new, it's a new
wireless standard. We're coming on the cusp of
this new, it's 802 .11ax. And it's supposed to
be coming this year from Intel, yes, Intel, the
same company that had the chip error. which apparently
it's a patch that you have to do, software patch
to fix whatever the issue is with the chipset,
but not delving into it any further. The 802
.11ax basically is going to give more... to the
chipsets, more ability for 2x2 and 4x4 home routers
and gateways for cable. So like cable, DSL, fiber,
and other consumer retail devices. So it's going
to be the next generation of the Wi -Fi obviously.
Because they're sticking with that 802 .11 blah
blah blah blah insert your letter here I remember
back when it was like G was the big thing like
I don't remember B because I didn't have Wi -Fi
before that but I had G and then they had N and
Then it was AC which my current router is an
AC My previous one was an N Which they all work
about the same. It doesn't really make a difference
in my household Other than you can do the dual
band on the AC one. So anyways, they're saying
the importance of the new AX standard is its
associated chipsets is amplified by the fact
that the home router gateway will become the
digital front door into people's homes. So they're
saying that previously people had a separate
phone television and internet device slash services,
but are now converging through IP services. TV
streaming services like Netflix and cable because
so many different types of communications and
smart home capabilities will also be managed
by the home gateway or Wi -Fi network. It is
becoming an increasingly important device in
the home for everyone to have. And so they're
saying it's basically a refresher of the AC such
as the ability to serve multiple users simultaneously,
the MIMO standard and the implementation of the
off. uh dma so it's it's kind of borrowing from
the the waveforms from the cell world and uh
um it's promising to improve upload speeds over
wi -fi as well because that's been horrible that's
always been horrible um you never actually utilize
what you pay for which is kind of funny with
i think that what they offer you and what your
routers and whatnot can handle are two different
spectrums. So anyways, it's designed to deal
with the extremely dense network conditions that
most users have with many wireless devices connected
to the same Wi -Fi network at the same time.
It'll be able to operate in both 2 .4G and 5
.8G bands of unlicensed spectrum and improve
both the bandwidth and coverage, something that
the AC couldn't do, which I can... totally relate
to because if I go out my backyard or on one
the very far side of my house because my my routers
set up in my Living room which is on the other
side of my office It's on one completely side
of the house. And then if you go to the other
side, you're the Wi -Fi drops out Or if you're
in the backyard it's kind of touch -and -go so
yeah, I definitely can relate to that and then
one of the spectrums I think the 5G is hit or
miss, whether it works right on the AC, it's
kind of crazy. But yeah, so they're saying that
the final standard will be due next year, but
Intel's new chips will be draft 2 .0 compliant,
which will enable them to comply with the final
standards on their chipsets. Yeah, this is some
big news in Wi -Fi. Especially with AC having
a short shelf life and didn't get as much adoption
with it. AX may be the way to go for people that
are still on the end bandwidth and looking for
a better standard that will have significant
leaps and bounds differences from what they were
used to. So we'll see something I'm sure at CES
on AX among other things and VR and AI and all
this other tech. So it's going to be kind of
a win -win when this stuff comes out. So moving
on. Some interesting news came out earlier today
actually there's there's going to be a new revival
at Hulu with a two season order and It's a combination
between Amblin television Warner Brothers animation,
and they're gonna revive the Steven Spielberg
executively produced program Animaniacs Yeah,
it's gonna be back with WB Hulu Warner Brothers
animation and Amblin television reviving the
award -winning animated series with a two season
straights the series order at Hulu Probably has
something to do with the fact that everyone still
loves it. There's educational elements and the
fact that Most the cast still does a lot of these
stuff whether it be on alpha or on What is it?
Nerdist and then you've got the podcast with
with Rob Paulson and his multitude of friends
from the voiceover industry. So anyways, under
the deal, the streamer has gotten the library
rights to Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Pinky,
Elmira, and the Brain, and the complete Tiny
Toon Adventures collection. So all those episodes
are available to stream now. with the new Animaniacs
set to begin rolling out in 2020 in what Hulu
is building as its first original series made
specifically for families. This is really awesome.
This whole deal right here. Not only do you get
a brand new series that continues the original
one, but you get all of the previous ones that
Spielberg's been associated with. I kind of wish
Freakazoid would be on there as well. among some
others, but I'm definitely happy to see that
these characters will be returning. So you get
Pinky in the brain, Yakko, Wacko, and Dot, and
I'm sure you'll see Slappy and a lot of the other
characters return. So this is really good information
and really good news, honestly. This will...
probably help propel Hulu a little bit more in
the direction that Netflix has been doing with
a lot of the kids animation, so we could eventually
see revivals of other series joining that lineup.
It's kind of interesting though that WB is putting
it on Hulu instead of their streaming service,
but I guess they're trying to do it on Hulu because
they own a stake in it or... Just because it's
kind of a mutual ground and there's a lot of
foot traffic on it and they can do it now as
opposed to later But Hulu's kid -focused library
also includes Teen Titans Go, Curious George,
Powerpuff Girls Adventure Time TMNT So yeah,
it's funny Spielberg's happy and proud that Animaniacs
will have a home at Hulu and He's looking to
Looking forward to the revival. It's only a matter
of time before we see some of the other shows
come back From the 90s because it seems like
everything from the 80s and 90s It was a TV show
or an animated series is starting to make a comeback
nowadays So I may I may have another prediction
episode on the full the full show anyway Of animated
series that may return Since they're just kind
of randomly pulling from all over Netflix and
Hulu are now at this point So there's the possibility
we could see more return. And even in this article,
they say that reboots and revivals continue to
remain in high demand as broadcasters and streaming
platforms alike look for proven titles with an
ability to cut through a crowded landscape that
is approaching 500 scripted originals. Key to
the reboots is having the original producers
involved, which is the case with Spielberg, Warner
Brothers Animation, and Amblin for Animaniacs.
I totally agree. If you don't have the original
people, producers, and... groups involved it's
just it's it's gonna pale by comparison to the
original and and i think that this is a slam
dunk for hulu at this point uh as well as the
fans as well as the fans um so this little bit
of news i couldn't help but pass up apparently
jeff johns will continue to help the new uh help
steer the new dc films uh president that just
took over. I guess that Walter Hamada will step
in to replace John Berg and Jeff Johns becoming
head of Warner Brothers Pictures DC Films. However,
it now sounds like Hamada and Johns will actually
be co -heads of DC Films, with Hamada taking
on the title of president of DC -based film production.
which is kind of funny because Johns and Berg
were placed in charge of the DC films in 2016,
but after Batman v Superman and then they had
the Western performance of Justice League and
So Berg stepped down and so now There I don't
even have a clue but They're saying that they're
working well together, Johns and Hamada, on some
things, and they're specifically going over Shazam
at this point, and Aquaman, but I don't really
know what to think about this, more so because
I think that... DC and Warner Brothers just don't
have a clue what they're doing and the fact that
Jeff Johns The fact that they have so much intervention
in what the directors are trying to do like I
understand that they they need there's there's
certain key points that they need to keep for
these characters, but the same token they need
to Leave these directors alone to kind of do
what they're gonna do and not tread on nostalgia.
And yes, there's certain elements of the characters
that need to stay kind of cemented, but there's
no reason that they need to kind of go in this
direction. I honestly don't see how it's going
to help either way because Warner Brothers has
been their own worst enemy in this entire universe.
Yes, they push the envelope, which is better
than Marvel by following the same formulaic experience
that they've been doing, but I don't know. I
don't think this is going to make that big of
a difference in the grand scheme of things, but
I guess we'll find out. So, anyway, I think that
about rounds this episode out of Altered Geek
this week, and I'll have more stuff next week
and hopefully some more news. So, until next
time, get altered, get geeky with the Altered
Geeks.
