About this Episode

Mike and Joe dive into TMNT Reborn Volume 2 (collecting issues #106–111), the new era of IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles written by Sophie Campbell with co-writing credits to Ronda Pattison. This volume shifts toward character-driven, slice-of-life storytelling across the expanding Mutant Town—from the turtles investigating missing children to Raph and Alopex's first real date, Mona's painful family call, and a shocking cliffhanger involving mysterious new threats. The hosts discuss how this smaller, neighborhood-focused approach refreshes the series after 100+ issues, the impact of recent IDW staff changes, and the deliberate pacing that lets us see these characters simply living their lives.

Hey, this is Tom Waltz, IDW's Teenage Mutant

pull bag here on the Geekcast Radio Network.

So, without further ado, it's time to talk about

the comics we're reading right now, here inside

the pull bag. Hello and welcome to The Pull Bag.

This is episode 522. It is the middle of May.

It's almost the end of May. I am, of course,

TF Joe and Mike. And today, we are getting back

on the TMNT train with TMNT Volume, Reborn Volume

2. Joining me as always for TMNT is Mr. Joe Reed.

Hello, sir. Hello. 522 episodes of The Pull Bag.

I know I wasn't there for all of those, but you

have been. That's a that's a that's a lot like

there aren't many comics that run that long at

all No, not unless your detective comics and

you feel like a thousand issues over 50 years

is enough Yeah, I was looking at sorting my comics

tonight in Daredevil They renumbered but there's

a legacy number underneath it and that's like

on 650 630 640 G's. Yeah Wow Yeah, that's crazy

Yeah 522 it is my Longest running podcast that

yeah, pretty much I mean I've recorded and released

over 3 ,000 episodes and 15 years of podcasting

But the pullback is definitely the the longest

one Ever at this point and yeah, I believe if

I have this right you were first on You were

on episode 29 with your origins and comic reading

back on September 4th of 2013 almost a decade

ago So you were kind of on the ground, you know

kind of in there on the ground floor Stay there

long enough. You're always in on the ground floor.

Well, come on now I mean, when did we and it

was That was 2013 and then we started Turtles

and yeah, we started this in 24 January 2014

is when we started this I think Am I do I have

the yeah TMNT volume one was was January of 2014

and Yeah, so we've been doing Turtles comics

for nine years I mean pull back some around for

ten but next year will be ten years since we've

been doing all this and Hey, look IDW stuff man

takes a long time It does. And I'm just glad

they didn't exactly make them reorder. I think

you said volume four, and I thought you were

talking about Mirage. Yeah, no. No, no, no. They

renumbered the trades, but they didn't renumber

the actual issues. Yeah, no. So for those who

go by single issues, this is collecting issues

106 to 111 of the IDW series. The creatives on

this story. is done by Sophie Campbell. The script

was also done by, oh, Rhonda has writing credit.

Nice. Yes, she does. That's why I had to delay

the record of this because I did not have my

copies of 106 because they got mailed to Canada

so Rhonda can sign them. You should have put

a note in there. Come on the podcast. Come on

the podcast. I tell her whenever I get a chance.

I know. I know. think I might be able to talk

her into doing a written interview which I would

not mind writing up and we could we could post

that here a link to it because at least it's

something I have lots of questions for her and

all that yeah the work she's done for the series

and you know hey a writing credit absolutely

that's awesome so Rhonda and Sophie Rhonda did

parts one through three of this and then Sophie

did parts four through six the art in this Trade

is done by Nelson Daniel for parts one through

three, and Jody, I... I can't even... Nishima,

I'm probably mispronouncing that, but she did

parts four through six. Callers by Ronda, letters

by Sean Lee, story consultant Kevin Eastman and

Tom Wolfe's. Nice. Oh, wow. That's a first. Oh,

no, no, it's not. Kevin Eastman, duh. I... read

Tom's name, and I'm like, wait, that sounds nothing

like Peter Laird's. Like, this is not the last

drone, and not yet, anyway. We will get to that

eventually. Yeah, because Tom did not, he gave

up writing, passed it on to Sophie after issue

100. And we're recording this in May. I hear

there was a giant shakeup. Recently at IDW. Yes,

there was and and so we're we're losing a lot

of people Rhonda's still coloring she was very

nervous because she knows people that that I

think got got cut there, but I've said it before

and you know, I don't want to ask or find out

or it'd be difficult to bring up in an interview

with any of the people that we've talked to before

but I think the turtles book is keeping IDW afloat

So one of the shake -up things is that Tom is

no longer with the company, but he is retained

as How do you say a consultant? Yeah, and he'll

go to cons talking them up and and I'm sure he'll

still have a credit in the book as writing consultant

Well, it's funny because it's not funny. None

of it is funny But it's interesting because the

last one we did, when we did volume, reborn volume

one, whenever that was earlier this year, was

it earlier this year we did that? I don't remember,

yeah. Yeah, it was in January of this year. I

actually edited around the Bobby promos that

we have. I edited around Where he says chief

Terrell editor at IDW. Like I had to edit out

because Bobby sadly is no longer with IDW. So

if I still want to use those promos, I have to

cut that out because he's no longer there. So

that was a little, a little strange and a little

weird. And it really sucks. I wish, you know,

IDW would have kept them on. I wish, you know,

all that, you know, I wish nothing but the best

for all of them. And I wish that, you know, as

long as, you know, I don't know. It's, you're

right. It's one of those topics that is really

difficult to talk about and it's not our, it's

not my business or anybody's business to talk

about it other than the people that it happened

to if they want to talk about it. And it really,

like nobody wants to talk about when they got

fired from some place. Like it's just not anyway.

Uh, yes. Issue one Oh six. We start on a dark

and moon moon filled night. And there's a random

lizard. Because this is not Mondo, this is not,

I don't remember which character this is, this

little green dude here. I think it's just a nobody.

And I think we're maybe not supposed to now,

but at some point we realize that this is a kid.

Yeah, we will find out, but as we open this,

we don't know. And there are mousers. Oh boy

That's not good Yeah, I kind of there's because

now I've read these issues and going back into

it I don't I don't know what we're Supposed to

take from that because the mousers there it sees

the frog. It's looming in the shadows But something

else comes up and drags this poor little kid

frog Away into the shadows down into the sewer

and the mouser is just watching. Yeah, and wait

a minute Huh? What kind of shenanigans is Baxter

up to with these little mousers? Oh Baxter's

up to a lot. Mm -hmm Baxter Essentially is now

shredder That would be an interesting take on

the shredder like shredders mayor of New York

well Stranger things have happened. But yeah,

I Yeah, it's I I don't know man. I've So we hit

issue 100 and issue 100 was this big huge thing

and Ever since then it just I don't know this

book it has the same thing it has always had

it has always had the heart it has always had

all of that it has always had the characters,

but No one really has explored who the TMNT as

a franchise are without a crank or a shredder

or something like that. And that's where this

is now. You have to figure out where the book

is going to go. And I think that's what we started

doing in the last trade with 101 to 105. And

then this one, like, I'm just like, wow. Okay,

day in the life of Mikey the ninja It's just

crazy, it's good. It's amazing. It's awesome.

I love it, but it's just I don't know I didn't

find myself I find myself attached to it, but

and I didn't find myself taken out of it It's

just different and that's good because You know,

I mean, look how long we've been covering this

book and look how many changes it's gone through.

It's at a point where it's going through yet

another change. I can't. I mean, if you look

at this book and you look at one of the first

12 issues with Dan Duncan and the tone and the

look, they don't look like the same book. And

I think a lot of people. complain on the internet,

because that's what you do there, I guess, about

these issues that Sophie's been writing and what's

been going on. And I think you're right that

there is a part of it that post issue 100, we

don't have a crank, we don't have a shredder,

we don't have a big villain looming over it.

Everything's really kind of settled. And right

around now, the pandemic started and nobody can

go anywhere. And all these shipping delays hit

the turtle book. writing delays and people aren't

available to do editing or coloring or whatever

the heck they had to do and so the book you know

missed a couple of months and Sophie's having

to deal with that and IDW is having to deal with

that and these books not coming out it feels

like this area this section the way that it benefited

from all of those delays and things is that it's

allowing us a moment to breathe I think I remember

saying in one of the pre 100 Issues is that we'd

never get to see the turtles get a day off get

time to relax and I really love from these issues

Getting to see a day in the life of the turtle

getting to see What they do when they don't have

to be superheroes. Mm -hmm Yeah, and I mean it

it's one of those things where everything has

changed for them because of the bomb, because

of all of that that happened with Hob, with,

you know, Hob turning a section of New York City

into mutant town and all of that. And it, I still

love this book. I still love reading these issues.

I just am saying, as I've already said, that

it's just, it's not different in a bad way. It

just, Is different and it's a little strange

because we you and I normally are so used to.

These heroes in a half shell going up against

a big bad or a big whatever, but you're right.

Seeing a day in the life and seeing how they

live their lives. Number one, without their father.

Number two, you know, they have to be. Parental

type figures to these little. the kids now and

and all of that and I I Understand why people

might not like this as much as the other Because

you know, we're allowed to like and dislike things

Yeah, whether we're not allowed to trash people

when they make something we don't like that's

not cool but but it is different and it's it's

also, I think it's different because we've Covered

the ground that all of the other turtles media

has covered, you know, like we are Beyond adapting

the old comics. We are beyond adapting the old

cartoons This is the territory that none of the

turtles media has ever been able to get to And

so I think that's maybe there's a little bit

of kind of panic in that that maybe they're not

discussing the writers and Eastman and Waltz

and everybody involved like yeah you not now

it's all you guys this is all you now yeah and

I do think I haven't while I'm just looking at

the covers because I haven't caught up reading

it I'm behind of course it's gonna get action

-packed again so as of this recording folks I

read volume two which we're discussing and through

some technical things and scheduling things in

life things we had to postpone when we were originally

going to record this podcast and since then I

have gone forward and I have so this is the first

time and ever nine years ever that I have actually

read ahead of where Joe like usually Joe's the

one oh I got the single issue I'm like I'm not

even I'm just waiting for the trade and I'm just

like well the trades are here let's you know

and and I am like at the beginning of volume

four of the reborn of the new whatever and No,

this does and I like where this goes and we'll

we'll continue to talk about it. I'm just saying

that it's You're right. Like you said, it is

so different. It is at a point where the turtles

have gotten have never gotten to in their history

and it's good. I was surprised that it was Donnie

doing the narration in this opening scene. Who

was writing the letters at Northampton? That

was Mikey, wasn't it? I thought it was. I'd have

to go back to Northampton. I don't remember.

Man, yeah, but it's, I always like hearing from

the B team. The B team. 2012 joke, everybody,

2012. Yes, yes, no, no, no. No, no. I don't know,

like, yeah, like, dude, seriously, Northampton

feels so long ago. Like, man and every time they

show a certain like every time they show a certain

place or a certain house or whatever in this

i'm almost like wait is that one no it's not

the farmhouse because they're in the city obviously

and i like how everyone is sort of adjusting

in this i like how we now have this mutant town

thing and we have this I don't mind that they

did this. I understand why they did it, but every

time any, any, it doesn't matter if it's this

team or any team, anytime any team in any media

says something about a wall, I'm like, thank

God we don't have one yet or at all. Oh yeah.

Never will. But, but the fact that mutant town

is walled off from the rest of the city and,

you know, it's, it's, it's kind of like taking

Brooklyn or whatever and just throwing it into

the Atlantic Ocean or something. I don't know

and you know that I Throwing accidentally political.

I mean it's it's what happened in the 50s and

60s you put a Giant superhighway down the middle

of the city to keep people on this side and keep

people from the jobs over here It's like this

deliberate sort of segregation and Baxter is

talking about it at a press conference later

where he says, we're taking care of them, we're

sending them food, not really. We're giving them

supplies. No, they're not. He's lying his ass

off. And they're going to totally help us with

the science and figure things out. You mean experiment

on them, I'm sure, right? Yeah, that's it. And

while we, and I never endeavor to be political

on any of my podcasts, because of What mutant

town is and where this story is? I think we are

going to have to do I mean We've always discussed

the hard -hitting issues that hit this book whether

it's life after death a subtitle of this trade

But you know whether it's that whether it's whatever

we're always gonna discuss it and we're not gonna

dwell on it too too much But there are a lot

of issues that come up Going forward where I

was reading it and I'm the like, how are we gonna

talk about this? Oh boy. Oh, yeah, I'll be caught

up tomorrow You got to October it's okay, I tell

you You know, I can't wait to see what you're

talking about because I Remember and later in

the volume four of the Mirage series and I think

I've mentioned it before the letters column turns

into a dumpster fire because Peter Laird was

quite happy to put people's political rantings

in there and he was quite happy to share his

political stance out there. You can't really

separate the politics from the Ninja Turtles,

especially those comics, because they dealt with

opening everybody up to different religions.

uh environmentalism and the green movement and

accepting people who are different from you like

That's where we learned all this stuff as children

From our media. Yeah, and and it does like So

what co and i'm not trying to spoil it for you

i'm just trying to give context so people know

why we are going to be talking about certain

issues is because A few of the mutants who got

mutated, a few of the people, because they used

to be human, who got mutated from Hobbes' mutant

bomb, they have issued, like, you know, their

family doesn't recognize them because they're

a mutant now. You know, that kind of, it's just

like, oh, you're not yourself anymore. Oh, you

look, like, it's... Don't want to use the term

racism because it's not racism It's but it's

like, you know, like editor Mike here So the

term I was looking for that I was trying to say

at this point was prejudice or prejudicial The

prejudice against mutants in this book. That's

what I was looking for There's one character

coming up later Mona. She says I believe she's

the salamander or she's something And it's her

that her parents just don't want to have anything.

Her family wants nothing to do with her now that

she's a mutant. Cold -blooded! So it's those

kind of issues that we will try our best not

to dwell on them, but we will have to talk about

them because they are a part of the story. So

yeah, we get little miss little miss Peter Cottontail

coming in here saying her kid is missing and

and her kid Felix and my thought was Okay, I

hope Felix is a rabbit because the kid we saw

earlier was yours then Wow All right. Well, it

looks by based on the photo. She's handing the

turtles. I think Felix is a bear Wow. It's a

random mutation, right? Yeah. Again, that's the

other thing is that these are humans who have

been mutated. So if we go back and we keep it

to being the simplest logic as possible. Boy

had a bowl of turtles. Bowl of turtles fell down

the sewer. The turtles were most near the boy,

so they're going to become humanoid. Hamato Yoshi

lived in the sewers for years with his friends,

the rats. He's going to turn into a giant rat.

He's going from a human to a rat. So, you know,

yeah, you're right. Wow, right. Again, this mutant

bomb thing, man, just messes with my head. But

yes, I... Okay, yeah, I'm just gonna pretend

there was a bunch of animal DNA sprinkled in

the mutagen And it was just it was kind of random

as to which ones you breathed in or whatever

I know I think the original cartoon was the only

one that gave those rules about yeah contact

with the last animal right, but In the comic

I think everything that got in touch with mutagen

was already an animal and it became humanoid

Because yeah Splinter was always a rat and only

a rat in old school comic Interesting I'm I don't

want to spend this this this episode daydreaming

and trying to remember that but Yeah, there's

a there's a kid who's been kidnapped and the

turtles are gonna go help find her. Yep. I Don't

know What it is, but and I think it's just the

I think it's just issue 106 I've said this before

and I'll say it again. And it's, I understand

it is what it is. It's a, it's a design choice.

It's a whatever choice. If Jenica did not have

her bandana wrapped around her neck, I probably

would not be able to tell the difference between

Jenica and Raph without their masks on. Yes.

She is a lighter green than he is. He is a darker

green. I get it. If you look at the The panel

right above that with all the turtles together.

Yes, they all have different shades of green

But seriously unless their colors are worn I'm

not telling the difference like that's why I

like I understand why they don't have the bandanas

or they don't wear them when they're you know,

not fighting crime or anything, but Man sometimes

is it hard for me to It's just a problem I have.

It's not a problem that the comic has. Imagine

how big of a problem that was back in the day

when the comic was black and white and they all

looked exactly alike. Yes, black, white and red

all over. We get to the point of them trying

to figure out who kidnapped Felix. Felix and

Lita, little Lita says, it's the Slytheri. He's

got him. What's that, Lita? The Slytheri. And

yeah, we go to the, where is this? This is the

- They're at the dojo. Well, they're at the dojo,

but this is her explaining what the, oh, this

is her explaining what the Slytheri is, and she's

talking about the - Oh, yeah. Yeah. Child's imagination.

Yeah, child's imagination thing and all the other

mutant children are like, that's a baby story.

Nobody believes that. Leta's got some attitude.

He is too real. He's not instantly. Oh boy. I

feel like I'm in kindergarten again. And okay,

that's enough. Back to work. Break it up. And

I do love how each of them, the turtles, they

approach the children and they interact with

the children. I think that's great. Although

they're often complaining, like, how did Splinter

deal with us before that? This is crazy. Yup.

And so Raph yells at Leta and she's got an angry

face on her and she runs away and... Raph...

I love you brother, but so, so leader runs off

and Mikey and RAF go out to or Mikey and Leo

or whatever you go to look for. And then they

see all these other missing kids posters. Yep.

And then we get to the buffoon in the politics.

Oh, I mean, I really jumped ahead. No, it's okay.

We're there Because Baxter is is yeah, he's he's

spewing his spew Yeah, there's not April doesn't

buy any of it and she knows he's up to something

I think she takes it upon herself to go warn

the turtles what's going on Yeah, so April man

she She may be a scientist like her dad, but

she's also a reporter like her mom used to be

because wow she she They they're angling her

towards That I think and which is good Yeah,

I love that they were able to Appease both the

old comic and the old cartoon. Yep. Absolutely

the moment with them in the at the kitchen table

with Raph fixing the pipes. This feels like,

yeah, this is what they would be like, right

here. They're just harassing each other, talking

about what's up, dealing with the critters that

come in the room. And it's nice to see them all

actually in the same spot. Nobody's captured.

Nobody's injured. They're just having breakfast,

drinking coffee. And Raph's over there being

being a plumber I heard that Besides what about

Donnie boy here? What about me? Storytime is

not a part of self -defense class I'm teaching

them to think creatively now. This is interesting

because It's not because of but like obviously

Donnie would want them to think creatively and

Sadly, where we are right now in the real world,

folks, I think artificial is taking over actual

intelligence and I don't like it. That's a whole

other, yeah, exactly, because you're a teacher,

I'm a podcaster slash former writer kind of thing,

and I've always tried my best to think creatively.

I've always been that creative thinker. I've

always tried my... If I can string together a

whole sentence with nothing but like. Today on

a totally tubular Tuesday, we are going to listen

to the pullback where we talk Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles. You know, this is the whole like.

alliteration thing and everything else it's like

being able to string that together you can go

to this website and whatever and some robot will

do that for you now I'm like no thanks I'll do

it on my own I would rather use my own brain

while I still have it what's left up so they

get into a brotherly argument before they're

ready to head out to search for the missing children

Yeah, they're gonna be serious about it. Go on

ninja style. Leaving the Weasels with Alopex,

the babysitter. I do love what she says back

to it. He's going, Al, you're on Weasel Watch

for a while. Yeah, go on. I'll try and make sure

the place is still standing when you get back.

And yeah. Poor alopex. Alright, you little terrors.

What am I gonna do with you? And this is where

Mona comes in. Hey, you need babysitting help?

And then we go back to the turtles who are out

in the street now looking for the missing kids.

And I'm loving this art. This art is great. Yeah,

I think this story came up and this artist came

up, I guess, to give Sophie a break. And I like

the art. Oh, yeah. Yeah, it's really good. I

like Sophie's art, too. I like all the artists.

What I don't like is the constant change of the

designs of the characters. That's what I never

really liked in the beginning was. like going

from like Dan Duncan to Sophie to whomever else

or to whoever it is. And they each have their

own way of drawing. Like there was no consistent

way of how the turtles looked kind of thing.

And but I mean, I'm after nine years of covering

this book, I'm kind of I've gotten used to it.

I'm over it. And I like seeing each individual's

artists, you know, take on on the turtles. keeps

it fresh yep and as they're out on patrol leo

asks janica did you see or jen since she wants

to go by jen's that i which i understand uh did

you see if lita came back and not yet she was

taking care of herself for a long time before

we came along and she says i'm sure she's just

gone back to one of her hideouts until she decides

to forgive you yeah I'm sure you're right. But

that's not where Little Lita is. Little Lita

is in trouble because Little Lita is not necessarily

in a hideout of hers that she used to. Maybe

she used to hide out in a box in an alley where

a mouser is. Oh boy. To be honest, I read this

out of order since I didn't have 106 handy, but

I read this on the way home. today and Noticing

no knowing what happens at the end I'm coming

with this the mousers. It seems like they're

luring the kids out Yeah, that's they don't ever

do anything. They could just be watching Yeah,

they are. Yeah. See that's the thing the mouser

Are they luring or are they watching? Right place

at the right time to see these things happen

there. No, they're doing both because the mousers

Are the traps for the slithery so the mousers

are their own traps So, you know, it's kind of

like here kid. Here's a piece of cheese come

put your foot in this bear trap No, thanks, you

know that kind of thing So the fact that the

mousers are now said it, you know are a trap

Mouse trap whatever the whole analogy thing So

leaders like who are you and the next thing,

you know, she's Yoinked by the slithery. Who's

this? Weird eel mutant and that's how 106 ends

In the trade here I do love the it shows the

and we will talk about All the covers at the

end but for the alternate cover I guess for this

it's one of the turtles I don't know which one

but it's one of the turtles and all the all the

mutant children is done up by Kevin Eastman and

I think it's probably Mikey or Raph and they

just have a hand like, you know, hand over face

like a face palm kind of thing. Yeah, absolutely

great. 107, we start with the Weasels. And we

start with Leda didn't show up for class. And...

Felix and those other kids are missing too. Something's

definitely not right. Besides his normal, gener...

Wait, no. Now I'm confused. I really need to

learn these colors better, but... Clues well,

I guess we'll be detectives. I guess our cultural

that's not legal, right? That's Mikey that has

yeah my yeah dark greens Mikey Yeah, that's Mikey.

I was gonna say because like Mikey Don't wear

a light blue shirt, please I Don't know is what

it is. So So yeah, they're going on on searching

more for the kids What oh they come across the

right they come across the mousers right Mousers.

Oh, no, I love that art. I love that panel Smashing

the mouser. No, not the smashing them finding

them where the mouses are looking at them, but

the mousers are oh I love that That's so good.

And then yes, obviously smashing the mousers

Good ol' Raph and his rage. Wait, let them go.

Let's follow and see where they lead us. And

then Donnie calls April and tells her about the

mousers and she's like, oh crap. Yeah, what's

he up to? What's he up to? Yep. Guess there's

only a matter of time before being mayor wasn't

enough and he had to put his evil scientist hat

on again So yeah, they're chasing the mousers

They need another and so they're chasing the

mousers the mousers go and into the sewer through

a grate and we need another way and Look guys

over there a manhole good conveniently placed

manhole cover Yeah, great. Mousers in the sewer,

just like old times, right? Just like old times.

Raph making the face. Yeah, great. Yep. How did

we get stuck with babysitting duties again? Oh,

it's not so bad. Easy for her to say. Yeah, you

got the nice one. And this is where we get more

about Mona. She grew up with four brothers. Surrounded

by little chaos is pretty much my normal happy

place. Four brothers, huh? That dynamic sounds

familiar. Are they here in Mutant Town too? And

that's when she talks about her family and, and,

and I do love that the little weasels, and I

almost said mutant babies, but weasels. I love

how they each have their own voice and mushroom

miss Lita. I like that. I think that's really

cool. That makes them more than just mutant animals

to me. Yeah, I wonder what they're going to end

up being when they're older in the comic. Are

these going to be characters at some point that

are more than just the babies that are kind of

untamed? Because I had forgotten that they were

mutants that Old Hob was going to sell to the

Foot Clan. Yep. They rescued them. Yep. It doesn't

seem like the Foot Clan would have really tolerated

them either as wild as they are. Yeah, the children

know, but we will get to what the Foot Clan will

tolerate later because I was shocked. So shocked.

Like, I mean, we've been doing this for so long

and This book always, always pulls out the right

moment at the right time. And so Leta is going

to help the others escape and they're going to

ride the mousers out of the cage. Maybe. That

didn't go so well. I like how Leta is like trying

to be the cool boss character, the leader who

can take care of these guys. And those are some

great panels. Yeah, they are. And we catch up

with the mousers. And yeah, they're getting destroyed

by the turtles. And I see this is a good way

to show This is what I love about color and oh,

yeah is when they are fighting the mousers you

cleared Okay, this definitely feels like old

times right Blue for Leo orange for Mikey purple

for you deja vu all over again. I Know I'm feeling

all warm and for the fact that that's Raph saying

all he's feeling all warm and That's crazy And

then Jenica's just like, you guys are so weird.

But again, it's to define them. And that page,

this is a page I would love to have as a full

art print. Again, there's a lot of pages in the

last X number of issues and years that we've

been doing this that we say this, but this is

another one where this would be a great art print

to have on my wall. Course I haven't hung up

anything else yet in almost a year. I've been

living here, but I will eventually one of these

days Probably right before I end up moving out

of here retirement home in 20 years, but it is

what it is So the slithery is real and yeah So

they're going after that And Raph doesn't want

them to split up, but Leo wants them to split

up because, you know... Don't you watch horror

movies? Yeah, I know, right? Come on, Leo. Jenica,

Mikey... Where the hell are you? Damn. I just...

I just dig that so much and... Raph, what's happening?

Don't know I heard Jenny yell and then I turn

they're both gone. I told you we shouldn't have

split up So they're gonna stay together now the

slithery attacks them tax Donnie attacks the

three of them Actually, it gets Donnie. Yeah,

it's yeah picking them off one by one and they

pretty much yeah, they can't catch it cuz it's

it's so slippery and I mean this is Leo and Raph

you would think regardless of their anger issues

with each other or with whatever that they would

be able to focus and oh man enough come and get

me you bastard the fact that Leo is now cursed

like I get Raph is always cursed Raph is cursed

since 1990 but oh man Leo's mad and then Leo

just kind of vanishes under the water The basement

isn't so we get that and we go to the next scene

Which is nothing to do with the turtles it has

to do with April and finding out what's where

Baxter is and all that The basement is always

the place in the movies where the bad stuff happens,

right? right You see Baxter and he's behind it

all of course he is Well, even now I look at

that and say he's he's watching Yeah, he's watching,

but he's still... He's aware of it and not doing

anything. That's the key there, yeah. He may

not be in charge of this, he may not be actively

doing it, but because he is watching, like the

mousers are watching, because technically, I

assume these screens of his... our eyes of the

mousers because that's just what i assume and

that's how we end issue 107 and holy crap wow

man this story has so many moving stories the

stories always have so many moving parts but

this one is like first of all you have the turtles

split up which they shouldn't have done obviously

because they all got picked off one by one anyway

Second of all, you got April dealing with finding

out what Baxter's up to, and then you got the

Slytheri coming and taking... You alright there?

Yeah, I was trying to read back my book that

I finished reading. I don't know what was in

that thing. I'm wearing headphones. I can't hear

it. So yeah, we end with Baxter watching the

situation. Yikes. Once again, another cover,

another... Alternate cover done by Kevin Which

it's mousers and turtle and we get to the next

issue and we start with the the weasels Alpex

and and Mona fell asleep. At least all three

of them are still there Yeah, that's true. I

did a count Yeah, absolutely. What's going on?

I guess we fell asleep Breakfast breakfast sure

kid. Why not? I don't think any of us are going

back to sleep anytime soon now So what is all

of this? Oh my god, miss O 'Neil If you must

know I'm monitoring a problem. There's a large

and dangerous mutant loosen I need to keep it

contained. Oh boy. Oh So that's what he's doing

He just doesn't want it to get out of Mutant

Town. He's probably keeping it there, regardless

of what it's doing. Public Relations, you're

worried about self -preservation. You couldn't

help because... You just couldn't help because

it's the right thing to do. So they're watching

this unfold, and I love April. She says, there,

those are the turtles. They're in trouble. Yes,

it would seem so. Oh Baxter Yeah, I think and

she probably feels a little bit betrayed that

That's her friends and he didn't tell her. Yeah,

he didn't tell her he didn't do a damn thing

about it and we get back to the sewers and we

have Jenica cutting through this slime and whatever

else and we see Lita Jenica and they have a nice

little hug asks her for a hand there and And

they cut everybody free kind of thing and Leda

tells them that, uh, I'm sorry, it's all my fault.

If I hadn't run away, I wouldn't have gotten

snatched and you wouldn't all be here in trouble.

And Jenica says, Oh, it's okay. Nobody blames

you. We found you. You're all right. That's all

that matters. That kind of stuff. But, but I'm

a bad ninja. I tried and I tried to get us out

of here and I couldn't do it. I was like, oh,

Leda, it's OK. Your training has just started.

You'll learn time. So they are going to be saving

the rest of the mutant children, which includes

the little lizard dude from the beginning of

106. And there's the teddy bear. Felix. Yeah,

Felix, yep. So yay, everybody's saved everybody

hang on tight. So they are scaling walls of the

sewer somebody's coming Oh, hey guys, it's me

April Oh Thank goodness, you're alright and she

goes to tell them about what factors up to watching

and not helping Yeah, and Lita is worried about

that. Let's see. Let's Take care of you. Wait,

you're not going to hurt him. Are you? I know

he shouldn't have taken us, but it's not like

it's like the story. He didn't try and eat us

or nothing. Oh, so they she wants to make sure

they're not going to kill the Slytheri. Maybe

you could just ask him to leave, you know. And

again, it's this whole life lesson thing for

her and for them and for whatever. And Donnie

has an idea. Well, what if it did just leave?

If Stockman's been trying to keep it contained,

maybe it doesn't even know it can get out. What

if we get it to the river so it can head out

to see if it's essentially an eel? Maybe that's

where it belongs. Well, there we go. That'd be

an interesting solution. We have more mouseer

fights. Wait and see what works. We get back

to the Weasels with Alopex and Mona. Alopex has

got her hands in her face and Mona's like, what's

wrong? Are you worried about Raph? What? No,

yes, I don't know. Again, I love that they are

continuing this. I love that they are like their

whole like ever since we first met Alopex. the

alopex raft thing i know you said it was like

something from the mirage books but archie ninjara

oh ninjara yeah the fox yeah i i like raf in

alopex though it's so so good so what are you

thinking so far as we're almost coming to the

end of this sort of i well we're at the kidnapping

part of it right it's yeah You know, it's a smaller

story which I That's my biggest cry gripe with

the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that every Single

movie is like the universe going to end I want

the smaller stories. I want the the neighborhood

squabbles and So yeah, this is a refreshing change.

Yeah Yeah, absolutely it is a refreshing change

not Not everything has to be an issue 100 or

a end game or Infinity War or whatever. Yeah,

one thing about those internet complainers that

I've heard during this is I didn't hear one single

idea presented, let alone an idea that was actually

better. So, no, you guys can never. Love it again

for me. It's more of an adjustment to okay Like

we said earlier in the episode This is a day

in the life of these characters whichever characters

were following whether it's the turtles whether

it's April and Baxter whether it's alopex and

Mona And all that it's character driven story,

which is good and I'm so glad I don't pay like

I I don't pay attention to any of the internet

crap when it comes to some of the criticisms

about certain things because it's like I don't

care. Yeah, I only I don't go looking for it.

I'm in a bunch of the Ninja Turtles comic collectors

groups and and sometimes you hear them go at

it like I don't I don't jump in what's the there's

a Thing about not arguing on the internet and

boy. Yeah, that's it. That's important So they

get back to... The turtles are trapping the eel.

Yep. So they trap the eel. Yep. And then they

get back to the dojo. Everybody's safe. Yep.

Everybody's safe. So yay. And then we get to

the secret surveillance of Baxter Stockman. Why

would I stop doing that? Because it's wrong and

this is where. And we'll be right back right

after these messages. Hello geeks and geekettes!

forth an offer to him. She goes look if you want

eyes and ears in mutant town Let me do it like

an ambassador of sorts and he accepts this versus

having the and of course as she leaves You know,

he says it doesn't matter. I can let you win

Because I already have what I want and he has

the the mousers with the eggs in their mouths.

I'll just like Oh boy. How many issues until

we see Baxter grow his new eel? I know this is

most likely not going to happen, but how many

issues until we see Baxter actually get wings

himself? I wondered about that. This is the longest

he's ever lasted. Yeah, I don't know if he will

ever get fly mutated. Because this Baxter, like

you've mentioned in the past, This is more comic

Baxter. This is not. Cartoon Baxter. Yeah, this

is not moronic white guy scientist Baxter. This

is other, you know. Yeah, so. So we start off

the next one with with Mikey. Mikey is watching

the news and. Oh, I had an issue. I had a letter

in issue 108. before you move on all the way

to number nine, 109? 108, yes, yes. Make sure

you go read that, everybody. It's most of the

same stuff that I say here on the podcast. Why

don't you just read it? Don't you have it right

in front of you? Yeah, I have it right here.

Let's see, let's see. So there's a start opening

line. There's a lot of hate going around There

are forces in this world trying to divide us

from each other and it's exhausting and keep

in mind this is like during the pandemic when

everybody's and the hate and Everything on TV.

It's exhausting to push through it issue 105

was very refreshing for a number of reasons and

I am thankful I needed to read that the issue

might not have hit me the way It did, had I read

it yesterday or tomorrow. The turtles' strength

comes from their unity. You've all heard me say

that. The theme of the turtles, whether accidentally

stumbled upon in 1984 or not, is and has always

been family. The turtles of the 1990 movie were

weakened when Splinter was captured, but they

were strengthened by April and Casey joining

with them. The turtles of the 2012 series saved

Karai by helping her realize her connection with

Splinter. In the IDW series, the turtles are

strengthened, strengthened often by making family

out of their enemies, alopex, slash, and now

the mutants of mutant town. It was as disheartening

to watch the turtles going their separate ways

here at IDW, just as it was when it happened

in volume four during the Mirage days. And I

had hoped it wasn't going to stay that way, but

gosh darn it, Sophie, Bobby, Tom, Kevin. The

turtles are reunited and it feels great. So this

was after they had kind of went their separate

ways stuck in Northampton Really in a depression

and I think this must have been the issue where

they all came back together That I was talking

about the family is whole again And even the

villains are touched by the love there is so

much diversity in those pages and respect for

one another It was a salve on my soul to read

this book because we are stuck in a world where

we are defined by the walls of our label Healing

will come when we come together as a worldwide

family to celebrate life with others who are

unique and happy in their skin. Our strength

as a people comes from our unity. Any force that

strives to divide us or separate us because of

our differences is an enemy of love and family.

Sophie and everyone at IDAW, thanks for being

a beacon of hope for me today. I love this new

status quo. 30 years a fan and you're carrying

the torch splendidly. Bobby wrote his reply as

he often does in there. But he was glad this

issue resonated with me and prompted me to write

that. So that was really cool. That's the second

time I've had a letter in there and I invite

every one of our listeners to write your comic

people like that because they do read those things.

So we open so that was issue 108. This is 109.

I'm so confused I'll help it's okay. Oh Hey,

you know what sucks about digital comics, are

you reading this digitally or in yeah? No in

trade in trade physical trade. No, no in digital

trade. Okay You can't you can't autograph a digital

comic. No, you can't I'm sitting here looking

at like four or five autographed comics on my

wall, and I I was gonna autograph your 108 like

That would be hilarious yes, I I don't I I Have

too many funko pops. I can't have a comic collection.

What are you crazy? No, but you know it'd be

really neat to have a celebrity sign their funko

pop Well, I didn't get it directly but I bought

it from a friend. I actually do have a Kevin

Nash autographed JSA certified supershader. I

showed you that, didn't I? I'm sure you did.

Thought I did. You probably didn't see it. He

never pays any attention to the shit I send him,

folks. Yes he do. I just forget about it. Yeah,

you skipped right over it. Didn't even I didn't

even make a comment. Is it in the Facebook? Oh,

yeah It's right above. Hello. Is this thing on?

Yeah, it's gone. I was a band Yeah, so my buddy

my buddy the funko fat guy funko fat guy on YouTube

he He had an auto. This is just a common super

shredder that anyone could have bought at the

time, but He had it somehow got it autographed

from Kevin Nash because it is the super shredder

designed from the second film And it says Kay

Nash super shredder on it. So yeah, very very

cool. I Absolutely love that. So you needed the

needed the Stuff and I wanted it. So I was like,

here you go. You help me I help you boom. There

you go So, yep. Yeah, no, I Love having like

Like I mentioned with the the panel earlier How

I would love to have that as an art like I love

having the art prints because at least I can

and yes I know I can mount a comic book on my

wall and whatever else and that's fine, but like

Every time I think of people who have autographed

comics almost I can think it was why do you have

a pile of 500 issues? I know that's not the case

obviously, but It's a grading comics and autographing

comics and then framing them It's it's somehow

a little absurd because when you do that, you

can't read the book anymore Yeah, it takes a

function away from it Whereas I think having

an autographed print that is hanging on the wall

makes a lot more sense. Yeah, absolutely So we

start issue 109 Mikey is watching the news and

they're talking about you know surveillance of

mutant town and keeping a prize of what's going

on in mutant town and all of that and Mikey just

sighs and walks out of the dojo and thanks Lita

for helping and we see a stranger approach them.

Hey y 'all, who are you? Oh, I'm Lola Cruz. I'm

a journalist. Did you sneak in here? Yup, of

course I did. I need to get this story. Someone

had to write about the real what really goes

on inside this place. What are mutants really

like, right? And Mikey's like, yes, totally.

Absolutely. You totally can. And yeah. And I

love how. Mikey is more adult. Mikey has his

childish moments in this comic, but he also has

his more sensible adult. We've seen it multiple,

multiple times since the beginning of this. Obviously,

at the end of issue 49 or 50, whichever one it

was where they originally went their separate

ways, where Mikey was like, I just can't do this

anymore. I gotta go do... Ever since then, even

though Mikey's the heart of the four, he's always

stepped up and him in these constructor -person

-painter -person clothes with Lita, it's like

he's a father protecting his child from the strain

for longer. The reason why I'm saying it like

this is because I love the way that Lita acts.

Curious, but she's kind of scared and then we

have the panel where where? Mikey says I think

we're we're done here Lola what why because in

that panel Lita is like clinging to him and facing

away from her and Don't you want to tell us who

you really are and slam she gets a door slammed

in her face and Yeah, the interview was kind

of going a little weird. This reporter who came

in with good intentions is sort of treating Mike

like she doesn't have a clue about these, well

I say human beings, she doesn't have an idea

about these people and she's asking questions

in an insensitive way and making assumptions.

not really listening or reading the cues and

Yeah, as it's like feeling more like an invasion

Mikey backs off and leaders obviously feeling

that and my favorite line is after they're inside

You know, you're man. What was with that lady

and leader says she didn't even ask your name

and And I didn't realize that as she approached

and introduced yourself like but leader did and

that was really cool I think oh man. Yeah, there's

something there That lady was making all sorts

of assumptions. Yep Absolutely So we get to after

that we get to where are we we're in Trying to

figure out these people are it's Donnie and and

Is it Mikey? It's Mikey. Yeah, it's Donnie and

Mikey because he's asking him about do you want?

Mikey wants to start a podcast And Donnie can

be his first interview guest. Okay. I love this.

Donnie and Mikey have always been my favorite

too. Dio, what do you got? What do you got interested

in this? I don't know, just thinking about what

sorts of stories everyone in the neighborhood

might have, that kind of thing. And I think that

sounds great Mike. Yeah, I can help you set something

up when we get back a bit later Okay, I have

to go meet Mona and do some repairs for the school

Oh Mona, huh? And here we go with the ribbing

and sure sure and all that and and just What

they're doing with this is just so fun you have

people See you have various characters setting

things up or doing and again. This is mutant

town this place Essentially has no structure.

You have to have people like Donnie or or whomever

You know Doing all that and whatever so Donnie

gets over to the school And we have, uh, a bully

show up. And it's this killer whale looking mutant,

uh, uh, Moses. I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone

was here. I thought, there's no food or nothing

here, so get out. Well, we're trying to get a

school up and running. We want to fix this place

up, and I don't care. Get out! Luckily. Donnie

says the right thing. We're just here to fix

the drywall, the plumbing, the electricity. Internet?

You can fix the internet? Yes! And electricity,

yes! Okay, sorry. Sorry, I was an ass. But I

mean, I get it. I mean, you know, you have...

Humans who have become mutated who are now basically

You know abandoned from say their families or

from whatever or they're on their own or maybe

they were on their own already I could not imagine

Anybody how much worse a situation and I've I've

been in the situation a couple of times in my

life, but can you imagine being? homeless and

Then being mutated and all that entails and just,

oh man, it just, again, yeah. And these people

are, for the most part, entirely cut off from

their support network. Exactly. I mean, so even

if they did have a support network, they don't

have it. Yeah. So everybody is brought down to

this level of zero. Where they're starting from

zero to try to build a life back Yep, and so

this this mute this mutant whale or whatever

she or he is supposed to be Mona says to them

your loved ones will be so happy to hear that

you're alive and well Joe well as well as can

be I guess in this place and Mona's like yeah,

I haven't reached out to anyone on the outside.

I don't know how they'd react I want to though

but and the other mutant says well even if they

freak out on you at least you'd know better to

know for sure you're right so Donnie gets them

all set up he and Mona have a conversation and

as she's leaving she kisses him on the cheek

yeah there's a lot of kissing going on coming

up folks I think he's blushing yeah I am NOT

I think he's actually turning red. No, I'm not.

Now he throws this side. If he's watching, thanks,

Raphael. Hey, look. I think he's blushing. I

am not. I think he's actually turning red. Maybe

not. So Lida goes after Miss Mona and she's gonna

take her with her and then they run across some

Well, they don't run across they go to the Kennel

Club and at the outside of the Kennel Club is

Jenica and Oh, what's her name? Sheena? Yeah,

I think it's Sheena. Yeah, the vocalist. Yep

So it's them and she wants her to follow her

dreams and they're talking about setting up the

band and we see this really red hooded dark mysterious

porcupine mutant and he's just kind of paying

a little bit too much attention to their conversation

as Mona and Leto walk up and he wants to approach

Jenica and she just like loses it because she's

not like He's a porcupine. Wasn't he a bad guy

in an earlier issue? Wasn't he one of the thugs?

I thought he was, yes. Yeah, because there was

somebody picking quills out of their face. Yeah.

But she jumps the gun a little bit here, because

she doesn't even let him finish. What are you

guys talking about? A band? Maybe. Well, she

doesn't even... let him finish his sentence and

just ups and kicks him and You ugly jerk. I wasn't

gonna fight you This is him talking to her. I

was just and she they get into a whole fight

again and she beats him up basically and Then

she realizes oh crap these are the old ways these

are this is what I used to be And she goes I

just thought I just thought what is your problem?

I said I wasn't gonna fight you Sorry, I well

I'm not even an evil henchman in it. Yeah, right.

Okay. He was he was he isn't anymore It's not

my fault. I'm covered in quills Yeah, Jenica

was ready to kill that dude she was about to

kill him if she hadn't stopped Yep. So. Whoa,

whoa, whoa. Civilian life, Jenica. Civilian life.

Yeah. And like, that's the the the interesting

thing with her, like where she comes from and

where. Well, we've always known Raph to be the

guy to have the anger. She was in whatever else,

but now she she stole his line. Damn. Yeah. Mean

it's not exclusive to him Hers feels more like

PTSD conditioning Abuse by the shredder. Yeah,

I know absolutely. Yeah, and and and raps is

just more Frustration and anger and yeah, just

not knowing how to deal with certain things and

yeah, you're right But it's just again. It's

just that fact of capital D period at the end

damn And obviously she knows she screwed up and

she apologized and all that and too late too

late now, but Yep Who knows? So we get back to

No, we get to Mikey and We get to Mikey and his

in his podcasting endeavors here I'm a turtle

meeting anyone out there and we see everybody

kind of listening on whatever and and anyone

listening never done this before but i thought

i might i thought it might be cool even hobb

is listening oh hobb manta ray and herman i gotta

come up with a cool name for my show and we see

this um Boy so Mikey's doing his show but this

squid character in darkness is sneaking through

The place and I don't like that at all. I can

every time I see this guy is it that's Cthulhu

Cthulhu Cthulhu is gonna get him Man that's bad

So, yeah, he's sneaking through while everyone's

asleep and most everyone Who is this reading

here? Is this Leo? Yep, Leo, because he's got

the scar on the eye. Yep, that's Leo. And this

mind flayer looking Cthulhu guy jumps him. Yep.

Bum, bum, bum. Now that's not good. Imagine if

you actually had to wait a month until you read

the next issue, Mike. Nope. Not gonna do it.

Don't have to. Nope, not anymore. So we get to

110 and we start where we left off and that's

the interesting thing though Even though it's

even though it's a month between the issues You

have the ending of 109 where? The Cthulhu looking

character basically attacks Leo In the very next

issue you have basically starting there Or he's

basically he's jumping up in the previous one

at the end and now he's landing and capturing

him and they're fighting and yeah. Cause damn

it, man, everybody's cursing these days. I don't

have a problem with it. I curse all the time,

most of the time, but. It's so weird seeing all

this. So Leo gets attacked and then we go to

Raph and Allopax. The little lovebirds or night

on the town or whatever they're doing. Gosh yeah,

this is a place we haven't seen the turtles either

where they don't have to hide. Yep. Nope. I'm

surprised Raf's as comfortable as he is like

on a date Dude, you've never done this before

Yeah, but I mean they've never actually been

on an actual date before but like I've said so

far in this episode of the podcast that They've

been will there won't being for a long time and

they've had their individual moments and now

they actually You know, and I love how she's

basically the not necessarily the angry one But

the more hungry one where you know you over there

taking all the dainty bites like wait I Just

like to enjoy it. I ain't dainty They everyone

else agrees with me they do what do you guys

talk about how am I dainty? Oh boy, Raph. And

of course, it's Raph and Allopax. They're going

to run into trouble at some point. We got some

mutant thing here. What do you say, Turtle Boy?

These are the fastest rides in Mutant Town. Hey,

watch it. So we have this going on. They get

into a fight and... It's almost a losing battle

for Raph until Alopex basically flies and kicks

the other mutant. And they have the boyfriend.

The girlfriend comes to save the boyfriend. This

nice roll -rover. You know, I'm thinking about

this scene here and... how You know, I'm always

I'm thinking about those complainers and I can

see where people would look at this situation

and go like why is he wasting time on a date

with a and getting in a bike race with this pig

over territory and looking at their bikes it

feels like such a sidetrack but I'm looking at

this going like this is a character moment Yeah,

this is definitely a character moment for everybody

involved, not just Raph and Alopex. This is a

character moment for that mutant. Yep. And, you

know, they get in the bike race. And even though

Alopex was the one to come to the rescue, she's

not above the one to, you know, throw down like

all the Hutt girls in the fast films. Because

that's all I can think of is okay guys get ready

standing in there. Oh boy here we go so they

go on the race and We have a race through the

streets here Raph wins I think yeah, well the

what happens is the the pig? It's a warthog.

I think of some sort on on the on the hog on

the Harley hog I get it now, okay wipes out,

biffs it, cracks his or her head on this pipe,

and instead of just winning, RAF turns around

to help her back. Yeah, RAF turns around to help.

Yeah, like, way to go, RAF. And because of that,

they earned some street cred, and you're okay

with the Roadhogs now, we got you, and as they

limp off. Yep, absolutely. Yeah. Guess you can

keep that bike. You did good on it. Wait gets

a bike. You know, yeah what we're setting up

We're setting up the night watcher. Oh That's

what he was I kept calling him the Street Avenger

in my head when I was thinking about him on the

bike But you're right. It is the night watcher.

That's right But yeah, so very very cool there's

a really good comic I can't remember who published

it. I think it was Mirage that was a prequel

to the movie set in that universe and the Night

Watcher garb and the costume and the vehicle

and the tools was a human character who had aged

out of the superhero gig and he met Raph or Raph

saved him helped him out and he kind of passed

the baton of the Night Watcher to Raph and then

That's where he got all of that kit. It was a

really good issue that nobody ever read, because

it was in and out and gone. Great movie, though,

guys. Check that movie out. Find the comics.

But yeah, Raph's got a bike now. Raph's got a

bike now, and Alopex is like, this is exactly

how I hope things would go. Well, let's see what

other trouble we can find. And I find this strange

now. So he says, let's see what other trouble

we can find. Now he, they're on the bike. The

very next panel is that them driving away on

the left and Leo is there on the top of the same

building on the roof running like they're driving

North. Leo is running South. Wow. What a close

call. And Leo is being followed by The weasels

and I don't think he realizes they're there.

Oh, no the way I know you know, but that happens

later, but yeah, it's later But but yeah, no,

man, though the weasels They're the best ninjas

in this book. You never know when the weasels

are going to pop up, seriously. They're everywhere,

man. They're into everything. And this section

is really neat for me, too, because Leo goes

full ninja mode. He stealths in shadows, gets

a costume on, covers his face, just walks in

like he owns the place, waving at people. Hey,

I'm checking in. Walks right into the building

hears something sees Herman and Man Ray Teaching

a class on mutant self -defense 101 in Hobbs

headquarters. We realize yes Switches disguises

pretends to be a new mutant. Yeah, it's just

like it's perfect. It's like this is what a ninja

does. Yeah Yeah, Leo the the the multiple costume

wear and the The weasel so sneaky ninja I Want

to know what's going on in that dojo, so this

is how basically telling them Oh Cthulhu mutant

is from ha right I got in the... I got in easy

the first time. I can do it again. We'll investigate

the entire place. So, Hob wants to know what's

going on in the dojo. And... Xana, the weasel,

one of the weasels is, uh, dada! You go out there

again tomorrow night. Where else? And so... So

they get dismissed and let's see here. It's Hob

and Pete. And Hob is just thinking and then...

Having second thoughts on this whole... Yep.

And then Xana shows up. Hob, look, a weasel!

Xana, what are you doing here? You know, I hope

isn't I mean Hobbes bad, but he's not like that

bad I mean Well, he cared for this this little

weasel. Yeah before he was about to sell her

like property to the foot clan It's true. It's

a little weird It's a little weird but but he

does care in a weird way Yeah, he's always cared

in a weird way about certain things and I think

From the time we first met him when we found

out his origin and how he became what he is and

who he is, he's changed a lot since then, especially

after the bomb went off, especially after the

bomb got set off and all that. I never would

have suspected him to become a leader of anything

back in those early issues, but now leading the

mutant animals is kind of neat. Yep. And we get

back outside to the Weasels and Leo. Sorry, Mr.

Leo. We wanted to be ninjas with you. Ninjas.

And Xana's like, I mess up. No, you did really

well, Xana. You all did a great job. You're getting

to be really fine, Ninja. I'm very proud of you

guys. And that's how pretty much the issue ends

with them. You know, that's right. And we'll

be ready for them. We know the information now.

We'll be ready for anything. And on my issue

here, the last three or four pages of this book

is a preview for The Last Ronin. Nice. That's

the first time that I have seen that. Yep. Yeah,

we will get to that at some point, folks. Most

likely somewhere between Probably 27 No, it's

probably somewhere Because I know that volume

reborn volume five and six are either out or

coming out so Probably sometime We might do it

for Christmas this year because I know like I

said reborn volumes three and four coming in

for us on the show. I've got those set for October.

So maybe we can do it for like Thanksgiving or

Christmas or something for last row. And because

it's completely separate from this, it's its

own thing. It's its own story. And the 2027 joke

was not a joke on how long it takes us to get

these out, dear listeners. It was a joke that

IDW right now has gobs of crossovers hitting

us and side issues like the Armageddon game.

I need to investigate the reading order for that

and how it intertwines with the ongoing series.

So there's a lot of books out. because I think

IDW realized Ninja Turtles is keeping them afloat.

Yep. So the Armageddon game does that tie into

this? Yes, because the regular books have an

Armageddon game logo in the bottom right. OK.

But I don't know if it ties in like Universe

did, where you didn't have to read it. But if

you did, you got the whole story. But it's another

big event. Yeah, and then Well, I'll figure that

out if I have to write an email to IDW to find

out what the reading order I will but I shouldn't

have to I'm hoping the book will tell me. Yeah,

that would be cool So we are 111 yeah, what is

this really we yeah, this is the last issue Wow

How is this the last issue? Holy crap? Yeah,

we kind of got two arcs in this because we got

the Rhonda's connecting arc, the three -issue

arc with the eel and now we have this one with

Sophie's back on script for these last three.

Absolutely, so we start out with Miss Sally Pride

and she's walking down the street and There's

no way I'm letting Hob's spies waltz on in here

and this is We get to the turtles no, we let

them waltz in then we can put our countermeasures

and tactics to use It'll send a more powerful

message to hub not to intrude in our home I guess

so Raph says What do we think of and again, I'm

sorry folks This is just me and this is my own

quirks here So Jenica's yellow Donnie is purple.

Leo is blue. Mikey is orange. Raph is red like

they've always been. Mm -hmm Alopex is green

Which is interesting well, you know, I guess

she can be green because she's white and she's

the green would actually stand out Yeah, but

I thought it would be more like a paler blue

to match her eyes. I just thought she'd wear

her eyes, but pale blue can't happen because

of that other turtle coming. Uh -oh, right. And

they can't use pink because Leta's pink. Leta's

pink, right. I forgot about the other turtle

coming. I didn't forget, but I forgot. You know,

I'm I'm gonna be interesting when we get to that

I think that was an issue I've read that issue

when that came out because I knew the whole the

internet was going to explode and I needed to

know why and So I was missing a bunch of context

on it, but it feels it feels like you know IDW

did it again They made this horrible thing from

the past from the deep dark history not suck

and so Good. Somebody rings the doorbell. Is

that spies? No, no, no, no, you're right. You're

absolutely right. If they're spies, they ain't

gonna ring the ding -dang doorbell. So Raph goes

out and it's Sally and... Oh, hey Raph. Oh, hey

Sally. And she basically to be some you ten oh,

I'm surprised you're gonna be here any any second.

Oh damn Can I help let me at him? She's she's

ready to help and and all that so they get So

he kind of pushes her away though And then they

go to preparing their their various things for

the traps for whoever's gonna show up for the

mutable invasion and All of that and It's the

same to where is everyone one goes upstairs the

other one goes down the hallway one hits one

of the tripwires the Cthulhu looking dude hits

the tripwire and oh Hi there. Bye there. Mm -hmm

fight fight fight kitchen kitchen And they managed

to You come into my Oh Raph Leo. Yeah Yeah, Raph

enough he's he's had enough And it's not a skunk,

it's not a squirrel, what, a raccoon? Sure, it's

a raccoon of some variety. Let's go with that.

He's trying to contact Stone and we see Mikey

and the Weasels and Xana. No, Xana is always

getting them into trouble. The impulsive one.

Always getting them into trouble someone's here

goes to lift it up and Yeah little kids Yeah,

like I wonder what was going through his mind

bear at that point like okay, he's with old hob

Sees these open this to this trap door and there's

kids underneath the floorboards Like is he thinking

like what are these turtles doing? Are they like

kidnapping and putting them under here while

they tenderize or something. And then Mikey rushes

in before this raccoon critter can do anything

and starts beating the tar out of him with nunchucks.

And as he's wamping on him here, I'm almost...

Well, because it's protective, Mike, it's daddy

Mike. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's where Mikey's

coming from with this energy. I almost thought

he was going a little Raphael overboard. Little

bit he came he didn't come as close as raf did

yeah, but but he came Close enough and I was

afraid that the kids were gonna see that and

then their opinion of Michelangelo was going

to shift because of it, but no no they alopex

and Yeah, yeah, yeah, go on after alopex, okay,

yeah And But yeah, but this raccoon has a laser

gun Yeah, I was looking at those letters like

what sound is that making ziyat? Yeah, there

you go. It's because old hab has a bunch of Triceraton

weapons. That's right. Yep from the Triceraton

times. Yep That's where that came from. Yep.

See this is why I'm so happy to do this podcast

and reread the book in detail. So we remember

what the hell happened. Yep. All right, that's

right. So who is it? So it's Mikey and the raccoon

person against each other and Jenica's there.

Who throws the net? That's what I want to know.

Mikey does in the panel where Jenica jumps in.

He chucks it. Oh, okay. I see it's a little messy

but then and then he blows like the sleepy powder

on the the guy Yep. Yep. Yep. Got it. Got it.

Got it. Yeah And the guy is like no you Good

night. Oh I'm sorry. It's a she it's not a he

it's she cuz Mikey says, dang, she's finally

out. Yeah, let's go check in on the others. Hopefully

they got the octopus guy. See, I would have liked

for them to call him the Cthulhu guy. That would

have been funny, yeah. That would have been awesome.

And yeah, Mikey's the hero. Mikey to the rescue.

And we get to Hobb. They should have been back

by now. Still no radio contact. This is Hobb

and Ray. And oh, there they are. What? Oh, there

they are. Tied up. Dammit. Get back to yeah,

so this whole thing with the with the mutants

with the octopus mutant and the raccoon mutant

going to investigate and spy on them for hub

and As we're going back through this because

I read this and I've forgotten where this happens,

but like I'm just watching Manta Ray because

something with him doesn't really, it feels like

he and Hob are going down a different path a

little bit even though he's still in line with

it. One of the henchmen mentions that as Leo

was sneaking through that they didn't like where

Manta Ray was going. What does that mean? Which

direction is he going? It's interesting that

Man Ray was in the Mutanimals in the comic, and

he was a straight -up hero in that. Definitely

a good guy, saving the world from pollution with

the rest of the Mutanimals. In this, he's much

more soldier -in -line with Hob's dark way of

doing things. I'm wondering if what you're detecting

is the shift toward... Man Ray becoming the Man

Ray that we know from the Archie series. Yeah

Yeah, so we get to Mona and Mona's like it's

gonna be fine. It's gonna be fine and she calls

her mom And they talk to each other and Yeah

that this doesn't go well like I know I'm sorry

I haven't been able to call outside and hey mom

could we make this a video call and and yeah

that oh my god Mona I'm a mutant salamander of

some kind so ah click click there's really yeah

So many questions about this scene. Yeah, me

too Yeah, you hung up on me like you hung up

and like What's her home life like what like

are her parents those Stereotypical judgmental

parents of I don't think so. I think it feels

like it was a loving home environment right up

until their daughter is not their daughter anymore,

not literally, and they don't know how to handle

that. Was it ever really a loving family? Was

it sincere? Yeah, I'm really wondering that myself

and I'm hoping we get I know I know we get more

with Mona and her feelings about all of it But

we don't really at least up to the point that

I've read we have I haven't really seen like

her confront her parents or anything But in this

she does say what do you want? Oh, no, this is

There's a knock at her door. What do you want?

She's dance. It's Sally so but At first I forgot

that there was a knock at the door because I

took that as more of her frustrations of the

what do you want? I thought that was like her

talking to her parents who hung up on her kind

of thing and Who knows maybe we'll we'll see

more of that in the future So Mona and Sally

hug And we get to... Ooh, we get to foot HQ,

and we get to Koya and Karai. And yeah, so...

Koya is sick of all the menial labor, it's beneath

us, it's this, it's that, and... He seems perfectly

content to me and Legend's just out there sweeping

away So yeah, Koya's not happy. Koya needs to

take it up with the Union. Yeah, pretty much.

So Hob and Karai, I... Maybe I can offer you

something other than mutants for serotonin weapons,

maybe, or intel about the null group. No hob.

You have nothing else of any real value, nothing

that I couldn't obtain on my own. If you don't

uphold your end of the contract, the foot will

be forced to Resort to extreme measures and this

is pretty much the end of the book for here for

this folks Well, what the hell do you want then

the weasels are long gone and and Well, they'll

do Her I says I want these for my new in initiates

and Oh my god I fell out of my chair. Well, snap,

I'm total. Like, what? They gave us Toca and

Razor. Like, this was happening. Golly, I had

questions about this because there are a number

of those characters from the movie that Nickelodeon

can't use because they own the movie. Mirage

didn't own the movie. Writers and and that the

studio owned them. Yeah, but stuff's happened

because well with Nickelodeon owning it now,

I assume stuff has happened because It's toka

and race. Well, I think if I need to listen to

it again, but our first interview with Bobby

we were dropping names of characters from the

movie like can we use these people and he had

mentioned a whole list of But there is a list

of characters that they can't use. Kino, they

can't use Kino. And Professor Perry. And at that

time, I think he mentioned that Toca and Rezar

were a part of it. And so somebody is out there

digging for rights. And I think, it had to have

been before this part, they've used Tatsu's likeness

from the movie and the character. Yeah, a couple

of times maybe. Yeah, I Interesting. Yeah, really

cartoon. Um, yeah. Yeah, but I was like I yeah

like Hence why I had to start reading like this

is the end of volume 2 folks. This is the that

was issue 111 How am I not starting volume 3

like right? I like that's why I've been reading

ahead because I'm just like you can't leave me

the hook for this you just can't but yeah no

volume to 106 to to 111 very very very cool absolutely

love it as always Sophie's writing is great because

it's not only emotional it's always it's always

impactful emotional I like that we are hearing

her voice in this. I like that where the story

is, as we've mentioned in this episode, it's

basically day in the life of whichever character

is on the page. It's not turtles versus this

person or mutanimals versus that. It is all of

that at the heart of it. But the core that we're

seeing now is this whole new mutant town being

set up. And that's where we go as we go along

further. That ending, I was like, wait, what?

Whoa. So good. Final thoughts from you, sir?

I agree with all of that. It's a slower book

than it was, and that's fine. That's totally

fine. There's an opportunity here to do a lot

of commentary. social commentary. There's a whole

lot of space here to introduce new characters.

And it's a new situation for all of these characters

to be introduced to. So it's all going to be

fresh and new. And I think that fresh and new

just upsets some people. All we want are reboots

and things. But no, no, no. This is fresh. This

is different. Like you said, They renumbered

the trades to get new trades out, but they didn't

renumber the issues they continued on with their

over 100 issues of comics and Everything this

story has brought us Has had a purpose has had

a reason has has had enough. I can't think of

okay guess Did I knit did? We know folks, you

go back nine years to January of 2014. I tell

the story all the time about how hesitant I was

when you first took. And then I saw, Oh, they're

all red. Nobody cares about red band Dan. Like,

look, that's just a nitpick, honestly. I mean,

that's like, there has not been a, there may

have been a story where I might've been a little

bit let down on, or a little bit lower of a score

on kind of thing. But overall, nothing that I

have read. This continuity has made me feel like

I need to give this book like oh, they've gone

too far. Mm -hmm. It's It's like I've said for

years Everything they do is a love letter to

the franchise Every say there is a thing for

every single there's a there's a When we get

later on this year when we get to volume 3 when

we get to recording that episode of the show

When I was reading I'm just gonna spoil it now

when I was reading that and Jenica or Jenny is

talking about setting up the band and whatever

else and they're Looking for people to do the

musician stuff. I'm just like They pulled a line

from a song that I never thought would be in

this guy I'm like, oh my god, they did it. Whoa,

like That's what this comic is. This comic is

nothing but pure joy Yes, we can analyze it.

Yes, we can criticize it but In the end, we still

love it. We wouldn't be doing this for freaking

almost a decade. We wouldn't still be covering

this if we didn't like it. I've given up on a

number of books in the 10 years we've been doing

this podcast. In fact, I think the only book

that I'm pulling right now are all of the turtle

books. I really want to add something else to

the rotation. I know there's a ton of indie books

that I'm missing, but now Turtles has been consistently

interesting, especially now that it's more fresh

with new voices. We don't have any of the old

school stories to lean on anymore. This is new,

it's fresh. Yeah, it's all brand new written.

They have to come. They have to find finding

a way to get any character that we have not had

yet either in this or back in this. Like Renette's

always going to show up at some point with some

timey wimey bullshit because it's Renette. But

but, you know, finding a way to get Toko and

Rezar in here or. Finding a way and again, I'm

spoiling for later in the year folks. But as

I'm reading that that trade I was like Toka and

Razor meets Bebop and Rocksteady. That's amazing.

Yeah Again, they're doing things that have never

been done before which is so cool And I think

you know, we're bringing back this old character

I don't feel like I can say her name yet It's

the news has been out there people know, okay,

it's it's an issue on 24 We just finished up

as issue one So we can say it's Venus Venus comes

back. All right. So yes, they are pulling there

There are they are treading a little bit into

that but they like IDW does they bring it forward

and they make it not suck and But they but they

aren't always retreading there are characters

that have been created for this book That are

going to be a part of the mythos forever. Oh,

absolutely Lita alopex Jenica like there's still

This new interpretation of Mona. I mean it's

going to These are seeds that are gonna show

up in the next, you know cartoon series someday

Hopefully, yep And I just hope some of these

creators get a little bit of financial credit

for that one when they use their characters someday

They better I'll fight for it. I'll argue. I'll

write letters. Yep, and then I'll promptly be

ignored, but I will try stop it Yeah, but those

guys don't write the checks, you know, we'll

see we'll see how true they don't but but still

like come on Alright folks, we're gonna go to

a quick break. We're gonna come back to close

the show right after this We'll give you the

rating and all that good stuff and we will be

right back after these messages You are receiving

even the nitpicks I don't really care about the

nitpicks that I nitpicked on that like it's a

five out of five it just is it's so like it's

so enjoyable it's so fun it's so interesting

it's to the point now where we are like you've

said, taking new characters, different characters,

we're figuring out all these other characters

that essentially got introduced to us because

of the mutant bomb going off. And because of

Mutant Town being created and all of that, it's

not just focused on the turtles, it's focused

on... Every them and everyone around them, which

which is great. It's awesome. Say I can't give

it anything other than a five Yeah, there's no

reason That this book can't get a five out of

five. I understand why people wouldn't like it

but Man I was just having this conversation with

my wife today that that you can I can look at

a video game and know it's a good game But I

don't I can't play the game. I can't I can't

do... Oh god, I just forgot the name of the thing.

The underwater... Bioshock. I don't like Bioshock,

but Bioshock was one of the best games of that

generation. I don't like Mass Effect, but Mass

Effect was one of the greatest games of that

generation. This comic is one of the greatest

comics of our generation. And it's okay if you

don't like it. It wasn't for you, but this book

is definitely for Turtles fans. absolutely it

is all right folks well it might be a while before

Joe comes back or maybe not I might have a plan

for Joe for something other than other than turtles

because so far no one has answered my call for

Yes, folks. I'm talking Star Trek comics. I know

it's a thing Star Trek is awesome. It is, but

I've always been on the outskirts of that universe.

I'm not the die -hard that Steve is or that anyone

else I know is, but I still enjoy it. And the

Star Trek comics from IDW that they've been doing

recently, I'm really enjoying those, so very,

very cool. Watch Strange New Worlds on Paramount+.
