About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Steve Megatron dive into IDW's new Star Trek ongoing, which reunites Benjamin Sisko with a fresh crew aboard the experimental Theseus-class starship. The issue bridges multiple Star Trek eras—featuring Sisko, Data, Picard, Scotty, Tom Paris, and Dr. Crusher alongside new characters—as an unknown force begins systematically destroying the gods of the Star Trek universe, including the Prophets. The hosts praise the art, writing, and approach of blending familiar faces with an open door for newcomers.

Hello everyone, TFG1Mike here from the GeekCast

Radio Network and I am coming to you before this

episode of one of our podcasts because within

a week of each other we lost both Kevin Conroy

and Jason David Frank. 90s staples between Batman

the Animated Series and Power Rangers, they were

everything. I, along with Steve Megatron, got

to interview Kevin Conrad 2012, and it was amazing.

And then Scotty and I got to interview Jason

David Frank. Also, amazing. Two wonderful, wonderful

people that will be sorely missed. I just wanted

to put this here before this podcast because

this was recorded either before or in between.

the news of both of their deaths. So we didn't

probably bring it up in these episodes you're

about to hear. I don't want to break down right

now, so on with the show. Hi, this is Kevin Conroy,

and you're listening to the Geekcast Radio Network.

You've just jumped inside the pull bag. Join

TFG1 Mike and the rest of the Comet crew here

at the GCRN as they make their great escape into

comics. From DC, Marvel, and Image to IDW, Boom

Studios, and Xenoscope, we have everything right

here. We cover things like Transformers, He -Man,

Super Heroes, TMNT, and Radiant Black. Yeah,

we have all that and so much more. It's all inside

the pull bag here on the GeekCast Radio Network.

So, without further ado, it's time to talk about

the comics we're reading right now, here inside

the pull bag. Hello and welcome to The Pull Bag.

This is episode 498. That's right, folks. We

are only a couple episodes away from 500. I am,

of course, TFJ and Mike. Joining me, sort of

as always, is Steve Megatron. Hello, sir. How

are you? Good. That's good. That's good. And

what would The Pull Bag be without Steve Megatron

on the road to 500 episodes? And we have something

new. We do Yes, yes, we do I was waiting to see

if you would say something about and it's not

borrowed or blue but Yes, IDW publishing Star

Trek number one This is all new it is featuring

Benjamin Jake and Benjamin Cisco I was surprised

to see his his son do the L cars That was that

was interesting But yes, Star Trek number one,

all new number one from IDW Publishing. It's

one of two new on - Is Warf's, is Defiant gonna

be ongoing? I don't remember if it is or not.

I believe so, but it's gonna be one of those

ones that traverses all the generations. Yeah,

yeah, yeah. So IDW has two new ongoings. Star

Trek here with Benjamin Sisko and the new crew

that he is creating. And they also have the Defiant,

Star Trek Defiant, which is going to be led by

Commander Warf. That is coming in March of next

year, so we will most definitely be tackling

that comic as well. And on the front cover of

Star Trek Number One and the inside where all

the creative is, and I'll get that out of the

way in a minute, it says, all good things must

come to an end and then begin again. Writers

are Colin Kelly and Jackson Lansing, which it's

funny that I see their names here now. I just

read them in the DC Comics six -issue mini -series

Batman Beyond, where they had some sort of brother

-eye futuristic virus thing. I don't know, but

it was really cool. The art is done by Ramon

Rosanus. Colors are done by Lee Lowridge and

the letters are done by Clayton Cowles. And yeah,

so Benjamin Sisko, he is no longer a god. So

for those that don't know, like me, yes, at the

end of Deep Space Nine and throughout the Deep

Space Nine saga, Benjamin Sisko was selected

as the emissary. for the prophets of the Bajoran

people, which is a god -like race. They basically

made him their mouthpiece and their one that

committed all of their goals in the physical

realm. He's their chosen one. He's their chosen

one, but I was going to say it's very, it's sort

of similar, but not really to like children of

the Valk. Essentially. Yeah. That's what, that's

what reminds me of seeing the opening to this

book and seeing, you know, the blue and the this

and the that. And, you know, I love this opening

art. And then you get where no one has gone.

Well, and then at the end of Deep Space Nine,

once the Dominion War had wrapped up and once

everything kind of had a nice little bow on it

for the Federation and for the Clangons and the

Romulans, with the signing of the treaty and

everything kind of accomplished, they had him,

like Sisko, fight. the Pa race, which are the

antithesis of the prophets, and through Goldicot,

who was their emissary, and they plucked Sisko

and saved him. With his mission complete, they

gave him rest and let him become one with the

prophets. They're having him wake up for a new

mission that they need to send him back into

the physical realm to do another mission for

them. Right. Exactly. And reading this comic

book, folks, makes me want like, this is only

the first issue of the new ongoing. So we're

going to be doing this for a while, probably,

but it After reading this and even in the middle

of this I'm like I need to stop reading this

book and go re -watch DS9 right now I do not

remember his son at all his son kind of was I

mean he was more of a focal point early on and

then into kind of mid seasons and then he just

became kind of a reporter during the During the

war and Really wasn't all that integral or important

to the plot Oh, okay, well, then, but still,

it's like, when IDW first announced this at San

Diego Comic -Con 2022 this year, I was like,

oh, cool, Benjamin Sisco is back. And yes, we

have this opening of him being released by the

gods back into the mortal coil. But then you

have the L -cars, which is written by Jake, not

Ben. And I was like, wait a minute, what's going

on here? Oh, right. That's his kid. Okay. Yep.

Writing the, cause he's being the reporter. Yep.

Yep. And I think that's great. I think, again,

this is new to me. This is, I mean, I've said

this before on this show when we've done Star

Trek Green Lantern, when you and I did Star Trek

Transformers. I am, you are the Trekkie. I am

just the guy who watched DS9 or TNG and DS9 as

a kid. And I don't, I'm very, On the edges of

the universe here so. You know i feel like wayne

over here when you're not working up your worthy

shut up. So this book like you said he comes

back and they're using is it the thesis. The

ship yes okay i'm just wanna make sure i said

it right. Is i'm looking at the name of the ship

and i'm like. Is that Theseus? Yeah, it's the

Theseus. It almost reminds me of the Odyssey,

the Odysseus and so on. I find it funny how the

first thing that happens after Cisco comes back

is he channels straight to Jake and Kyra and

then Kyra is thanking the prophets and then he's

in this battery of testing and then Starfleet

organization kind of arguing about the security

of it and then him being there with the Bajoran

people and then in quarks and then he's in his

quarters and then it's kind of funny and then

it leads him to the one person that before his

experience with the prophets, he absolutely despised.

Which he hated he hated Captain Picard because

he was taken over by an alien species against

his will and forced to do something that he didn't

want to do and in turn killed a lot of people

in the Federation including Cisco's wife Jake's

mother and as Locutus and so now the shoes on

the other foot Now, he understands what Picard

went through in this time instead of meeting

on the Enterprise D for the meeting and the Enterprise

E. They start off on the Enterprise E here. What

prompts the Theseus thing is he's looking at

the model ships of the Enterprise and sees the

sovereign class Enterprise E there and he's like,

I need this ship. Like this design, because it's

able to withstand battle. It's able to withstand,

you know, long range stuff. It's like the workhorse

of the Federation in this particular point in

time. I love this. I'm loving this. This is so

great. This is really fun. It has obviously the

continuity of obviously per card is there. Obviously

other characters are going to show up later in

the issue and that's fine. And that's great.

So it has the stuff to pull you in, but it also

has the stuff that's going to pull me in because

I want something that is like, like I said, I

remember watching DS nine. So the DS nine story

was, it's a, it's, it wasn't a one and done,

but it's a, it's a, Fledged out, it got its chance

over its lifetime to have a full closure type

thing, sort of. And this is just, this is just

fun. Well, and then, and then it's funny because

Picard, you know, is like, you know, look, I

understand, you know, cause Cisco's like, finally

he understands, you know, the, the other foot.

Cause Picard's like, what do you need? What do

you need from you? Just ask for one. He's like,

yeah, and then I was taken by a mysterious alien

race and no one else understands and had my body

and mind changed forever. The Picard looks at

him and that's why Cisco's like, that's why you

of all people. He's like, hey, I know a guy.

He says, but he's like, but I have one condition.

You take a first officer, I choose, and he chose

Data. Data, Picard implicitly trusts. about to

embark on his own. I think this is also partially

priming Data to become his next first officer.

Now, mind you, the Theseus is not a sovereign

class ship. It's a discovery class experimental

cruiser. I think that's why he said this is the

ship that I need because he can essentially start

fresh. Yeah. And what's funny about it is they

purposely put this to the time period of Star

Trek Discovery. Like it's a ship that was kind

of created, an experimental one that was around

since the 2260s. Then it was done with a first

contact mission, heavily damaged during multiple

key incidents in the original series time frame.

Then returned to dry dock, recommissioned under

Captain Scott, Scotty from the original series.

Reconstruction and new tech and Scotty's designs

and finally they finish it and lo and behold.

Who's in the engineering room? Scotty. Yeah,

so you have three generations of Trek here. Of

course. Yeah. And it's really fun. And I am so

used to doing the comic reviews here on the show

in trade paperback. I got to the end of this

and I'm like, crap, that's it. Like, don't get

me wrong, I love the issue. I have no issues

with the issue, but I'm like, but wait, I want

more. Give me more. So I love the new uniforms

that they have in here. Yes, they have all new

uniforms. Specifically for the ship and then

except for Scotty who wears his standard original

series engineering fatigues that for the most

part, most Most engineers have ditched in favor

of the standard issue uniform. Yep. But you also

get, in addition to having someone from the original

series, the next generation and Deep Space Nine,

you end up with Tom Paris from Voyager as the

navigator, and then Dr. Crusher. Right. Along

with a couple of new characters, one's an Endorian

helmsman, Ensign Saito. And then you end up with

the Vulcan, which is Ensign Talir. Both of those

are new characters. All the rest of them are

from a different generation of Trek. Right, yeah.

Yeah, and I just, again, I find this, as someone

who lives on the edge of the Star Trek universe,

I find this really refreshing because it, like

you've said and like I've already said, It has

the stuff for long time Trek fans, but it also

has stuff for us newbies, not newbies, but us

people who are may just be on the edge of the

universe. And I love when we get to his, his

quarters when he's trying to do his, you know,

captain's log star date. I don't know. I thought

that was hilarious. That was so fun. And Ramon's

art, man, this art is fantastic. I love these.

I'm really liking the starship. I'm really liking

how well they captured the the characters, the

established characters and enterprise, you know,

the new ones. And I don't know. I'm just I'm

very interested in this storyline. Am too I I

most definitely am and we will be covering this

as It comes out monthly. I just have to reconfigure

the pull bags schedule so but it is what it is

Star Trek number one the last thing I want to

cover before we kind of and these these episodes

folks because these are single issues They're

gonna be a little a little on the short side.

So you're gonna get short 16 20 minute whatever's

And man, I don't know if you've seen it, but

the covers that they did for this. Wow. Like

that main cover is great. They did cover B, which

is Cisco and the ship. It was done by, the art

was done by Declan Shalvi. Cover C was done by

David Aja, who I know from Hawkeye. There was

a online exclusive cover by Angel Hernandez and

Fran Gamboa. Which is just like looking into

Cisco's eye. Which has the wormhole in it. Yep,

has the wormhole in it. There's him with Crusher

and everybody. I like these. So that cover, the

cover D by Rachel Stott. That's my favorite.

So what I like about these is you have the tradition.

My favorite is cover A by the main artist of

the book because it gives you an example of what

the interiors are going to look like, but I have

always liked real life covers and that's what

cover D to me. Well, it reminds me of the old

Star Trek comics from DC and Marvel when they

were doing it. And I just have always gravitated

towards that. Absolutely. One of the interesting

things is you see the, you know, the premises

is the reason Cisco sent back in the first place

is because of someone is wiping out. The, the,

the gods of the Star Trek universe. So like the

profits, the queue, the, the, you know, the crystalline

entity, which we see wiped out in this one. And

you know, there are these. space -fearing silicon

life forms that power themselves by consuming

and converting organic matter, including whole

planets. The Enterprise D actually fought one

of these things. Well, because Lor, Data's brother,

sent one to destroy the Enterprise, and they

took one of them out. This thing just wiped them

all out. And, you know, the prophets are talking

to Cisco and telling him he failed and, you know,

data doesn't have a clue what's going on because,

you know, just like Picard can hear the Borg,

he can hear the prophets. And, you know, you

see the wiped out entities, you know, completely

shattered and the enemy ship is gone. And Cisco

is still trying to... Figure out what's going

on and he still has some godlike abilities because

he was among the prophets And so You know he

described it the same as Scotty's Apollo, you

know the or Trillane, you know from The original

series that had these godlike powers and then

you know the prophets in deep space nine or Q

You know And and then the whole fact of watching

them die and it's just yeah, it's crazy to see

something of this magnitude Yeah, it is and then

it's you know, they're coming next month issue

Cover looks really good because it's real life,

but it shows Cisco enlisting wharf. Oh Yes Wharf

we love you and what I love is from I'll actually

have this in the in the post From I believe it

is space calm. This was back when they did the

the announcement from comic -con this year they

have a quote from From one of the writers and

Lansing said Benjamin Cisco is back We're immeasurably

thrilled to launch the new Starship with a crew

of new and familiar faces heading out on a mission

that will truly go where no one has gone before.

An Avengers style ongoing crossover that treats

Gene Roddenberry's creation as a living universe.

This is a book where anyone can show up and where

anything is possible. That's what I love. Like

we've already said new characters old characters

any characters That's great for people that want

to jump on board onto a new number one without

having to Know ever everything in the Star Trek

universe, you know as I've already said you're

the you're the the expert I'm the whatever but

You know, I just, I love that. And this art man,

man, this, I love this art. The backgrounds,

the, the visuals. Oh, it's very crisp and entertaining.

I love space. I love the appearance of it. I

love the way, you know, the, the thesis is going

in warp drive, uh, both into it and coming out.

Uh, I love the hues of the different colors and.

Just the details, you know, the lighting when

Dr. Crusher comes through the absolutely the

doorframe. Yeah, you always got to light up that

crusher, don't you? All right, folks, let's let's

go ahead and rate this one. What what would you

give this one zero to five? I don't know. I'd

have to give it probably a five just because

I really enjoyed what it's setting up and then

all the different dynamics and kind of walking

through not only Cisco, but data and through

all the other characters that he's interacting

with. Yep, yep. Absolutely. And I like this from

his point of view, plus other, like the other

people around him as well. Like I was not ex

like when I just saw the synopsis of this and

I knew it was Cisco. That's all I knew. And then

all of a sudden, Oh, by the way, here's. here's

Jean -Luc and here's this and here like oh this

is this is awesome this is fun this is great

yeah i am also going to give it a five uh i love

the art i love the writing i think the writing

is really good and i am looking forward to seeing

what stories these writers and these artists

create for us in the future of Star Trek I do

wish, though, that they would have put it in

the same something. Yeah, I kind of wish that

because that would have at least differentiated

it from other Trek series, at least, because

it should almost be Star Trek Battle of the Gods

or Star Trek Enter the Prophets or something,

just something to kind of break it up a little

bit. Yeah Yeah, it's just Because again, you're

gonna have because I think I I know IDW's other

start the main Star Trek series is reaching its

400th issue That's crazy, which I believe this

was a crossover. Yeah and and We may even coverage.

I don't know if we can cover just that issue,

but I might need to look into that but it's just

one of those things where If this is going to

flick, if that series is going to end and this

is going, that's fine. But it just feels like

it needs something a little more to define it

to Cisco and his era and his timeline. So yeah,

fives all around. We will be back. sometime with

issue two whenever issue two comes out i'll have

to look and see what the dates are for that but

uh but yeah folks star trek back here inside

the pull bag we're gonna take a quick break come
