IDW TMNT Volume 22: City at War Part 1

time to talk about the comics we're reading right

now, here inside the pull bag. Hello and welcome

to The Pull Bag! This is episode 422. 422 episodes,

that's right. I am of course TF2 and Mike. Joining

me once again in this Turtles Month here in August

2021 is Mr. Joe Reed. Hello, sir. Hello! Yes,

and we are on the road to 100 issues of IDW Publishing's

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... I am looking

at volume 22, City at War. This collects issues

90 through 95 of the IDW ongoing series of Turtles.

For the creative, Kevin Eastman, Bobby Kernow,

and Tom Walz did the story. Tom Walz did the

script. The art in this is done by Michael Dynalias

and Dave Wachter. Colors are by Rhonda Pattinson.

Yay, Rhonda! Duction by Sean Lee, series edits

Bobby Kernow, collection edits by Justin Eisinger

and Alonzo Simon. The main cover on the trade

anyway is done by, it's one of the issue, it's,

they always take one of the issue covers and

make it the trade cover, but that was done by

Michael. Obviously TMNT created by Peter Laird

and Kevin Eastman. so we open city at war part

one and I Like I said when we did bebop and rocksteady

Like I feel like I need to go back to volume

21 when we covered that last year a couple years

ago because I Had no like okay. They're there

at slash's funeral. I remember slash ended up

getting killed That's fine. But like before like

When it opens just on the church, I'm like, slash

tried to kill us once. I'm like, oh, Mikey. It's

interesting that I guess your trade paperback

is called City at War Part One, right? Uh huh.

OK. Issues 90, 91 and 92 do not have a subtitle.

93 is the first one that's called City at War

Part One. So that's interesting. Hmm. Let me.

Double check this I'm pretty sure Of course now

I'm just gonna have to edit all of this but no

no no I think that's just neat I what I what

I think happened is they once slash died and

then they had that battle that That literally

was the end of an arc and we have these three

issues 90 91 and 92 that are lead up to the city

of war which is okay Just it's just what is the

cover. I think you're could the cover of your

trade is issue 93 city at war part one Yeah,

probably most likely. Oh Wait, this does have

the free convict day issue in it. Wow Okay, so

then I guess I don't have to Off air folks. We

were I was telling Joe that there was a free

convict day issue from 2019 that that tied into

this and apparently it's in this trade apparently

I don't even remember reading the I don't even

It's so it would be so easy the way that they

do those free comic book day kind of yeah Recalls

they they they go back and they remind you about

everything so it's great places for you just

to jump on and And it's a good reminder because

for me I get city at war confused with City fall

city fall. I think is that what it's called.

Yep Yeah, city fall was one was back in issue

25 26 20 way back then yeah way back then we'll

put I'll put that show link in the in the show

our city fall thing anyway getting into this

They are at slash's funeral we have the mutanimals

we have the turtles we have Yeah, that's that's

who's there you have angel and alopex And that's

it. Yep, Angel and Alpex, that's right. And I

gotta say, I normally do not like when the turtles

have their bandanas off, but ever since IDW has

been doing it for the longest time at certain

moments, I kind of dig it in this specific series

that they do it. But usually like when they do

it in animation, sometimes it just, it doesn't...

work well for me, but seeing the close up on

Mikey and just, you know, hearing his, his eulogy

that he's doing and he's trying to be, you know,

emotional and, and, you know, give slash a good

send off. And then what a load of crap old hob

has to come in and ruin everything. And I get

it. I get that hob is the way he is because of

what happened to him, but I mean, come on. Like

low. Yeah. I mean, come on. Like they're just

trying to honor their, their friend. And I get

that hob has a, um, a connection with slash obviously,

but, um, you know, he starts in on his Bishop

thing and and all of that and I love the art.

I absolutely love the art. As Hobb is going through

this, this tirade of his, we see a panel of Leo,

Donnie and Raph and where it's where he says,

this is us against them, cut and dried. I just

love how Leo and Donnie are kind of looking at

each other and Raph's just got that. Old dead

stare. Yeah. Cause Raph looks like he's ready

to just, just attack that flea biter. Oh, so,

and I love that, you know, we already covered

the macro series and it says, you know, where

hobbins is speeches and whether you're a mutant,

a human, an alien, or whatever the hell else

there is, you're either with me or against me.

And then we get to Bishop, who is actually John.

I almost forgot about this, that Bishop isn't

actually human. He is, but he isn't. Yeah, he's

deformed and small and underdeveloped, I think

is the right way to say that. And I think they

co -opted KrangTech. Or from tech to build the

body for him. So you have an Android body that

he pilots that looks human It doesn't look human

right now doesn't look human right now. It's

like strapped up like oh Not Gamora nebula in

the Avengers movie. Yeah in Infinity War and

Endgame. Yeah and They are he's talking about,

you know How you know while I appreciate the

sediment dr. Shelvin I began my existence by

being prematurely ripped from the safety of my

mother's womb I survived that unexpected extraction

and I've no doubts that I'll do the same this

time Frankly of greater concern to me is the

loss of the slash weapon But apparently he planned

and I I should have noticed this before but I

didn't notice it until now because it kind of

happens way later. But when he's looking at Leatherhead

on the screen and he says, in a situation I fully

intend to rectify in short order, I'm like, uh

-oh, is he going to go after Leatherhead? That's

not good. Yeah, I didn't see that picture there.

I didn't realize that's what he was doing. He

guided view, that's why. That's why that's good.

Yep. His soldiers get attacked, but it's not

human because Leatherhead is attacking them.

We get to second time around, April and her parents.

What are they talking about? They're talking

about... They're helping April move. Yeah, they're

helping April move. Because she's so ridiculously

busy with... Baxter Stockman's election and What

else is she doing Mayor stuff basically the mayor

stuff takes a lot of time and So we get that

we get Casey and Jenny who are getting to know

each other supposedly dating or going on a road

trip and Oh, they're going to Coney Island. Yay

And Bishop attacks this place. I don't know,

this isn't Bishop attacking, this is Bishop getting

ready and this is the Earth Protection Force

getting attacked. Where is it? Take it out! Oh

my god, what's going on? It's heading towards

the labs! And yikes. Bishop seems to be fine

with whatever this is taking out the entire team.

It's not Leatherhead. No, it's not Leatherhead.

What we possibly could have been led to believe

had I noticed the screen before. Yeah, that's

what I thought too, but it is not Leatherhead.

It is a different head, isn't it? Oh, man. I've

never realized that before. It's Metalhead. Yeah,

it's Metalhead and... Metalhead to me has kind

of become what Amazo is in Justice League Unlimited.

In the old Justice League Unlimited DC animated

universe cartoon, Amazo was this thing that Lex

Luthor created and he required all knowledge

and to keep evolving and everything else and

he eventually evolved so much that he no longer

needed to worry about the human struggle and

Metalhead here reminds me of that so much, but

once Donnie comes around it's like, oh man What

what a thing And we get to clan Hamato and I

actually have this as of this recording it's

probably changed by now, but as of this recording

I have this first part of the panel as my Facebook

cover profile where Mikey's like, what the heck

was his deal? And it's clan Hamato, the bandanas,

and all the weapons. I love how that's laid out.

That is so beautiful. That is so good. So good.

And, you know, Leo's like, he and Slash were

really close. And, you know, they're talking

about all of that. Mikey's talking about how

the mutanimals, the purple dragons, the foot,

you know, the fact that Splinter is with the

foot doing crimes, and Mikey's just not happy

with the whole situation. And Mikey hasn't been

happy with the whole situation, I want to say,

since about issue 60 or 61. and Raf has an interesting

point of view here. I mean, Raf is usually the

one who goes out and solves the problems by hitting

things, but I think he can feel or he can tell

that something is coming, probably because of

Old Hob's threats, and he wants to get out of

Dodge just to experience some peace for a change.

I think yeah, Mikey calls it running away And

and because he's Mikey's thinking like well our

friends and our family and the kids Yeah, the

orphans back in the foot clan like we should

help them right because they're important to

us but Like no raps it's not about raps says

it's not about running away. It's about just

Like let's avoid this because they're all staying

in a trouble. Yeah, exactly And I love having

that either no, you know, it's like, you know

back off rap for all on edge You know Leo is

hoping that they can plan their next moves together

and We go to the foot clan And little Tommy is

like Mr. Splinter the movies over and Jenny and

Mikey's not here. How do we and so they're having

technology problems kids are And I like this

I think that's cool that they have This whole

technology thing where it's you know, it's not

just Netflix or whatever streamings like it's

it's old school stuff It's cuz that's what the

turtles picked out of the dumpster when they

had the lair and this just kind of moved up into

the foot clan They're splinters rewinding the

the VCR for them Rewinding the VCR tape. They're

watching old martial arts movies and Splinter

has a bit of a flashback or he's remembering

the four turtles watching these videos together

when they were younger picking which of their

martial artists that they Liked the best Jackie

Chan. No Bruce Lee totally Van Damme. I like

him the best. Why are you crazy and So who's

your favorite master splinter and and Splinter

says it's the one who? Doesn't have to use the

physical prowess, but the mental prowess and

and I've this so cute to me Mikey goes I think

he means mr. Miyagi guys. Yeah Yep and Karai

has returned to claim what is rightfully hers,

ending this first part or the issue 90 here.

Oh, boy. Yeah, there is a miniseries that I don't

remember reading recently with you, where she

went into Japan and got that sword that she's

carrying. Yeah. And and her and some of her sidekicks

that are new. That might have happened in the

TMNT universe. Yeah, I think it did. Or she had

her own miniseries again. But yeah, the universe

is going to be really difficult to read at some

point, because they're all essentially standalone

issues. And they fit in between random issues

in the main run. That'll be all right, though,

because we'll figure it out. Yeah, we'll do that

by itself. Yeah, so next we get to, you know,

before Urokukui awaken and it's all her minions

and her with her new sword and it's Kitsune.

We never like when she shows up. No, it's never

good when the Pantheon family shows up. And she

has this plan that she needs Karai's help with.

She wants to resurrect Shredder. Yeah. Yeah,

she wants the Foot Clan back, wants Karai in

charge of the Foot Clan, and I don't think that's

what she actually wants. Yeah, I think she wants

to control the Foot Clan to go back in. Yeah,

absolutely and We get you know back to the present

and we get to her facing with splinter and I

do like the mutual respect Or they bout where

she bows to him and he bows to her. I think that's

great I didn't remember that happening like they

showed up and I'm like, oh fight issue on the

next issue but no no she came and took off her

mask and says I come to parlay essentially essentially

and The big bad mutants are playing with the

kids and Koya wants to eat them. Yeah, not this

one. It smells like poo And the turtles show

up and then oh you think all hell is gonna break

loose but I do not remember this little old lady

who's sneaking sweet drinks from the hotel. Like,

Natsu? I don't remember her at all. Is she the...?

The miniseries. Karai went and got her out of

Japan somewhere. She's like a gang enforcer that

she recruited. They have a history. Okay. And

we get to the point that Karai wants... once

leadership of the Foot Clan. And I like Leo and

Raphael. Leo's like, Father, would it be okay

if I came too? Certainly, my son, it would be

good to have Clan Hamato represented by its master.

Oh, brother. Yes, he is your brother as well,

Raphael, and I am confident, like me, he would

be appreciative if you and your other brothers

remained here with our guests until we return.

Yeah, sure, Father, no problem. I Like Mikey,

huh busted can it I just I love this scene with

them because it's it's telling of How each of

them are like Leo wants to be the respect, you

know, you can call him a Superman Boy Scout Whatever

you can call him Boy Scout. That's just what

Leo has always been, you know And the old brother

part is basically Raph's anger a little bit showing

and then Master Splinter is saying, hey, you

know, we all need to do our own thing and we

all need to be, you know, respectful of that

and whatever. And then Mikey just comes in with

a joke. Busted. And Donnie doesn't say a word.

He just smiles. I love that. I thought, I thought

that was so good. We get to back to Bishop and

Metalhead. And Dr. Shelvin doesn't really like

the sound of this, because this first panel with

them is like an alliance, you say? Yes, of mutual

beneficial nature. Oh God, oh God, oh God. Shelvin

is a coward. Well, there was a giant military

turtle guy who just annihilated several dozen

people getting in. Getting in I think I'd be

wetting myself a little bit too probably And

what I love here is is that they that Bishop

is is pretty much like You know You did have

the element of surprise to your advantage that

is no longer the case And the metalhead just

kind of goes off on them And what he does is

he basically overrides his primary targets and

goes after Bishop himself and he scans him and

we see the little John character in the stomach

thing. That's freaky but cool. And this was very

subtle I noticed reading this too. He's in the

one panel so I can start with you and he points

his Blaster arm at Bishop's head and then as

he scans him And then Bishop says if you're trying

to impress me, you'll have to do better than

that I'm afraid because he's pointing it at his

head and after he scans him He's he lowers his

gun to the chest where the body is and then that's

more like it Bishop said Bishop then has the

capabilities figured out and Now knows, you know

what kind of person he's dealing with That was

very cool. And we get back to Mikey with Koya

and Bludgeon. And he's trying to figure out what

powers they have and he's trying to be friendly

and Koya is just, she's just cold. I think Bludgeon's

powers are really cool because Bludgeon, hey,

hey. This is the first time, and I know this

is not official, but in all the times that we've

been doing this series, you have said to me almost

every episode that you want a TMNT Daredevil

crossover. Not technically Daredevil, but...

We get a mention. We kind of get, you know. The

echolocation and Lidar and all that. That's really

cool. You totally like the shark version of my

favorite superhero. And of course, it would be.

I think that's cool. Does that mean that if they

cross over, they're acknowledging the fact that

Daredevil is a comic book character in Turtleverse?

I hope. I mean, hey, if they can do Batman stuff,

I don't see why they can't team up with Marvel

and do Daredevil stuff. Yeah, that surprises

me as to why that hasn't happened yet, because

IDW has that partnership. Any time, right there,

here goes. Yeah, true. And this other mutant

that's with them, I don't remember his name off

the top of my head. We'll catch it here in a

second. I can taste the fear on you, your weakness

too, and he's just trying to play into Raph and...

Bait him. Yeah, basically bait him. I'll show

you weak. So we get to Splinter, Leo, and Karai

with the guards. And he tells her that despite

our best efforts to stop her, the witch Kitsune

was able to steal away Rokosaki's body from this

chamber, stolen. But why? For arcane purposes,

no doubt. Your Chunin has returned, and I like

that she kind of gets closure, but not really.

I mean... Sort of and she said she's she's one

of the people that I don't want I Don't want

to get what I don't want her to get what she

wants. Yeah true Yeah, well the problem with

Karai is she wants the respect she wants to Lead

the foot clan, but Kitsune wants her to help

her Get shredder backs and basically just push

her aside kind of thing. I think so We get back

to the motorcycle date with Casey and Jenny.

They apparently did not make it to Coney Island

because the bike broke down. The bike broke down.

And they talk about his mom and his dad and all

that. More so about his mom than his dad. But

I like the two of them together. I think it's

kind of cool. I don't necessarily think they're

Super relationship material, but seeing two human,

for now anyway, spoilers, TMNT characters getting

like, because don't get me wrong. Do I want to

see Casey and April together? Absolutely. But

with the way that that has gone in this, this

universe and this series, if it happens, it happens

in the future. But I like, you know, that Casey

is kind of moving on. April's too busy and doing

her own stuff with all of that. And I like that.

I think that's cool. And they bond here over

kind of having messed up childhoods and both

of them, despite that, having these bright sides

that kind of kept them good and kept them clear

minded through all of it. So it's just kind of

neat. And Leo wants to speak to Master Splinter.

And this is where we hear about the run -in with

Karai and her goons. She wants to take over the

foot and all of that. And what I love about Leo

here is that He basically says they don't need

a protector. We need our father. I think that

is really really good and you know, I Think this

is the moment where splinter changed his mind

for how he may have handled this before I I think

splinter has been very stuck in his ways about

being Running the foot clan and doing it in a

way that is at least kind of decent despite the

fact that it's a giant criminal organization

about protection and defense and bribery and

things. But Leo saying that, you can see the

body language change. Oh, yeah. Stand on his

shoulder. If it meant getting you back, you know,

and Karai has paid her proper respects and They're

going to leave this place and All of that and

You know, she's ready and and Raph stop being

stupid So delicious, this is foolish foolish

ocho. Oh lord, his name is ocho Now all I can

think of is dodgeball and ESPN 8 the ocho. Oh

god Jason Bateman and Giant fight ensues because

we need a fight and Leo tries to break it off

actually Leo and Karai try to stop both The legend

was even trying I think it's nice to know that

I mean, I didn't trust that the foot were coming

here, but in this moment, yeah, Bludgeon's trying

to call Ocho off, and Karai comes in to break

it up, and Leo comes in to break it up. There

is some good faith stuff happening here. Absolutely,

and we get to a point where Raph is like, out

of my way, Leo, that frack. Freak. I don't care,

Raph. This isn't time for your childish crap.

We tried to tell him he was being a baby Leo.

Shut up, Mikey. Like, I mean, just the look on,

like, Leo's angry because we're all, they're

all trying to, to move towards peace. And I love

Splinter with his eyes closed. Ah, yes. Peaceful

indeed. And we end this issue with Splinter saying,

and that business does not require squabbling

amongst ourselves. No, it necessitates earnest

conversation and careful negotiation. After all,

it is quite an important undertaking for the

Foot Clan Master to relinquish his throne to

another. Say what? Nobody saw that coming. Yeah,

nobody saw that coming. We get to the next one

and Yeah, oh somebody's trying yeah, we open

the next one somebody is robbing a liquor store

and Angel and alopex are gonna stop these people

So that's what's going on here And again, I like

this. I think this is cool that we get another

little a little kind of interlude to what is

going on with the turtles and everything else.

We see where the other characters are and what

they're doing, and... Alopex doesn't really execute

that move from that movie she saw very well,

does she? No, I don't know what movie she's referencing,

but I know that there's a reference there that

perhaps I guess... Yeah, I'm not sure either.

The... When I saw Angel and Alopex... I'm like,

oh yeah, we're hitting all of these characters

by figuring out where they are. This is like

the battle lines episode where everybody's figuring

out, or we were reminded where everybody is and

who's allies are whose. Yep, yep. Absolutely.

We get back to the Foot Clan headquarters and

we get to... This whole thing and I do love that

everybody is bowing. I think that's really great.

It's a great image With the the three mutants

that cry has with the turtles and all that They're

they're setting up to discuss the the handing

over of power and resources and control the sorting

the Beanie Babies moment where they're breaking

ties, negotiating. Yep. And we get back to Metalhead

and Bishop. And Dr. Shelvin, you may cease your

piteous groveling and vacate the command center

now. Thank you, H .R. Bishop. Like we were saying.

And like I said before, Metalhead wants basically,

augmentation, adaptation, evolution. That's what

he wants. He wants access to the technology that

Bishop has and in return, he will get the Mutant

Turtles for Bishop. Essentially. So, he wants

access to Area 51. Oh boy. Well, all that good

Uttram tech is. Mm -hmm. Yep. And then we get

to the mutanimals with Sally and hob and they're

fixing the ship that they have and Hub the dead

don't rest Sally they rot He's he's very Matter

-of -fact about that and it's it's uncomfortable.

I think everybody else around him. I mean he's

not wrong The slash is dead and he's not going

to spend any time thinking about that. He's only

going to think about how to handle revenge and

justice from his point of view. He's watching

the Baxter -Stockman independent debate, speech,

whatever you want to call it, political thing.

It was like thing and I told him not to be a

complete pompous jackass And Baxter's main point

is actions not words is essentially what his

his thing is and She's like, I think he actually

did it. He's going to win and we cut back to

the mutanimals Stockman those other two don't

stand a chance. Yep. I'm counting on it we get

back to the turtles and cry and splinter and

You know if they talk about Casey and they talk

about the children and everything else and cries

like purple dragons. Yeah and where the alliances

are going to lie with what is essentially a rival

gang, but No, no, it's Casey. We can work that

out. He's a he's a good guy and they'll follow

him But the disagreement begins over the children

over Mikey's orphans Mm -hmm. Yep They either

join or they must die What that wasn't part of

the deal and Splinter's honoring that that agreement

that he made which I think is quite cool and

She you know, she says I you leave me no choice.

I challenge you to the gauntlet And your challenge

is respectfully denied, Kurai. What? You would

dare dishonor yourself with such cowardice? I

said no innocent blood would be spilled today.

I meant what I said. And she's just angrier and

angrier and angrier and then Jenny shows up with

a bow and arrow. With Casey and the Purple Dragons.

Or, no, it's just Jenny and Casey. The soldiers

behind them are the foot soldiers. The elite

guard. The elite guard, yeah. I wasn't sure when

we got introduced to Jenny way back when. I was

not sure if I was ever going to like her. I've

slowly gotten to like her over this time, and

I could not love her more than right now. Your

grandfather is dead. You'll soon be joining him

if you don't leave this place now. So they leave

and basically cries final word before we close

out this issue. War is coming and in the end

I will ensure you know death and destruction

like never before. Volume one Ninja Turtles run

from 84 to whenever it ended at issue 62. What

is it 72? I think it's only 62. No, 72 because

it never got to 73. Remember? I wonder if they're

counting the volume two in addition to that,

but not. I don't know. Either way, the city of

war. That was when Karaj came back to fill the

power void left by Shredder from years and years

ago and it was the first time in a long time

that that book had a chronology going or had

a sequence of issues and it culminated with the

end of volume one and just like this is going

to put the punctuation on one through 100 just

a neat bit of rhyming going on with doing. Absolutely,

and this is the first issue that, you know, City

at War Part 1. We start on the planet Neutrino

with Zack, Calla, and Dax, and the Fugitoid.

That's interesting. I like that they're going

here and we see these characters. Again, they're

not, you know, fully... Like you said earlier,

they're kind of showing you where everybody is

even though the neutrinos really aren't in the

whole Turtle battle thing. That's where fugitoid

is So we have to see what he's up to who I can

no longer hear as any voice but David Tennant

Thanks to that Nickelodeon cartoon. Yep And we

get back to splinter Jenny and the foot clan

And Splinter is talking about how, you know,

you know, Karai has sworn an oath of vengeance

and she's very much her grandfather's progeny.

We've not seen the last of her and it's one of

those, it's like one of those cheesy karate kid

movies we've been seeing. It's spying on them

and Jenny's like, Come on, you two. Let's go.

Are you guys going to fight like Ninja War or

something? Cool. And I love this. I was a little

bothered by that. No. Yeah. I like I know in

the past X number of years that you and I have

been doing this series that we often say certain

times that Splinter doesn't look really, really

like a true rat kind of like the you know. This

is like, holy crap. This is so good. This is

the look on his face and the look in his eyes

is just like, no child. This is not cool. This

is not what I am saying. And again, you were

talking about the moment earlier where he was,

he was, you know, where he paused, where his

mind changed. Once again, I think this specific

panel is another Thing showing splinter that

what he was doing or what he was going to do

was not the right path and now he wants to change

all of that and We get to the the clan Hamato

layer and Leo's like you see anything Raph? nothing

Where the heck is wait? I see him and so does

the alert sensor Hey, look, it's Mikey doing

the whole Nirvana thing again. Oh, yeah. Like,

wait a minute. They're setting up the fences

and cameras and detectors because they know what's

coming. Yeah, they know. Oh, I also see behind

Raph there is the railing that Slash mangled

the first time he attacked. Yep. Yep, that's,

yeah. Nice to keep that continuity and they have

Harold and Libby helping them with Donnie over

it over at Harold's lab and you know and Leo

wants RAF to go do the safe zone thing and everything

else and We see now that something has happened

to RAF. We don't know now if you're reading TMNT

universe, you'll know because apparently this

all happened there With rafts like rafts always

been angry but Rafts anger in these issues and

in the in the once we'll talk about next podcast

episode It really really gets Really bad Yeah,

this was I think What he? Was a miniseries or

an issue called target are is that was that when

this occurred? Yeah, I think so. Yeah So he had

the quick summary just like a he had a weapon

X type experiment experience captured by the

EDF EPF Earth Defense Force those guys anyway

and They really messed with him and I think he's

Raph is completely changed kind of thing. Yeah.

And we get to a gangster house on the Brookline

shoreline and Koya is going to attack the gangster.

So is Bludgeon. And Karai invades in this whole

battle and, you know, she's like, up the stairs,

let's go. And she's basically killing everybody.

And she gets to... The boss and what's this all

about Karai our tribute is paid and current I

would offer you a new business proposition Antonio

forget your loyalty to the rodent join me in

his destruction And I swear to you the foot clan

will never again seek tribute from your family

Your debt will be forever paid in full and if

I refuse then well, you know The Oroko clan will

crush all you hold precious in this world Man,

that shark has a lot of blood on his teeth. He

won't have to eat for a while. No, not really.

Yikes. I think it's great that Karai, I mean,

I don't think it's great, but I think it's a

great point in the story showing how Karai is

going around trying to set herself up. Yep. Yep,

going after all of the people that swore loyalty

to the Foot Clan for protection. She's kneecapping

all of those people saying, you work for me now.

They're going to be easier to bring to her side

than anybody else. So, you know, she's she's

building her army. Yep. We get back to election

headquarters and April is talking to the the

people here and action not words Which is stockman's

thing and oh look in the back. There's Casey.

This is gonna be awkward Yeah, actually it's

not Not really I think really this is probably

the last time or the one of the times that they've

been together since Their miniseries together

I mean, you know, besides in passing a couple

of times. Yeah. It was a good heart to heart.

Yeah. It's a good heart to heart. And even Jenny

is there still. And April hugs him. It was good

to see you. And you're a good guy, Casey Jones.

isn't always the best talker, but I read that

line and I'm thinking that should have said things

went well, but that's just the editor in me,

I guess. And yeah, somebody tries to attack them

with an arrow. And it's a message. And Karai

wants to meet with Jenica. Oh. And I knew like

once that happened, I hadn't, because I have

not, I've said this before on this show, I read

these comics as to talk about them on the show.

So I have not read any of this. I have not kept

up with any of this. Do I know what happens?

Yes. Yeah. Obviously you kind of can't help what

happens in the news because it's news, especially

every time they kill somebody or they think that

they're going to kill somebody or, you know,

they turn somebody into somebody else. Hey, at

least here they do it in a way where it's not,

you know, so Venus -like. We get to the Mutanimals

HQ and, uh, Herman Trendarfo. depending on his

mood, I'd say he's a little bit of both. Hob,

stand down Herman. What the hell's going on?

We're setting up a security perimeter and Hob's

got all kinds of plans and everything and you

know, he figures that Raph wants in on it and

yeah. And Raph is about to give him an answer.

He's like, his phone buzzes. Hold on. Damn, what

now? All hands layer now, 911. Now, before, when

I saw this panel, I knew it was from Leo, but

I didn't notice the blue L right next to the

actual tab. I was like - I did not either. I'm

like, wait a minute. And Hob's like, okay, well,

you know, when you're done playing it safe, let

us know. And they're told about the risk and

everything that's going on and all of that. And

I like how Leo's like, I still don't like it,

but Jenny's right. We've got to take a shot.

They're planning on meeting up with Karai. She's

planning on meeting up with Karai So she went

to the turtles and even though Karai told her

to come alone. She did bring Angel and Casey

they're not the turtles. They are friends of

the turtles and The turtles are in the van That's

cloaked It's Howard's just like that And we have

a back and forth between Karai and Jenny and

Jenny's, you know, loyal to Splinter. She's not

going to join Karai. She's not going to do any

of that. And Karai asks her and says, or she

says, I'm sorry, Karai, I will never join you

or anyone else against Master Splinter. Hmm.

But would you die for him in a heartbeat? So

be it. Okay. Oh My god, they did not just do

that but they did And an all -out fight ensues

is on the run Donnie's like cloaking is gone.

So who's hiding? Yeah, so they they basically

bust in Karai's mutants bust in You know, his

precious chunin was only the beginning and they

get Jenny to the van and they're like gun it

gun it gun it gun it and let's go Gun it, Raph.

Gun it. Wait. Look. Koya and Bludgeon. Well,

I guess it's just the old -fashioned way, then.

You ever play chicken, Mike? What? Wait, dude.

What are you? Jump. Chickens. I love that. Oh.

Yeah. So this is continued in the free comic

book day thing. I see right here. Yep. It is.

Yeah Yeah, so which yeah, I don't know anyway

They have to try to save save Jenny and I Love

where Mikey's like, go right, dude. You're stinking

So Angel and Casey are on the bike, and Koya

is about to attack, and Angel goes and tangles

as well because of the because of the continuity

So good So one of the things that occurs as Mike

and I are reading these issues is because he's

reading them in trade and I'm reading them in

singles Sometimes the editor does things to his

version of the book that aren't done to mine

yep and then 94 Begins with Captain Mitchell.

over? And then the crazy part here I'm wondering

if they really rearrange this and you've only

got the three or four pages and then They switch

to this and then they go back. Maybe they maybe

they put the flash back in later. I think that

okay. Yeah, because so that ends with the basically

the escape so this whatever this is ends with

the the escape with the battle and Mikey is you

know Harold's lab what are you gonna do there

dude like I like Leo said whatever it takes and

we see the final battle thing and we see Jenny's

face Now I have to find a way to go What is it?

What is it that the others are doing their part

to keep Jenica alive now? I have to find a way

to do mine and That's where that ends and then

this brings up like you said city at war captain

Mitchell This is agent Bish. So maybe that was

the free conflict a issue. I am so sorry I did

not realize that they put it right there and

then well, I'm also wondering cuz that that was

a bigger issue I I wonder if there's a section

of it that's a flashback or a review of the previous

95 or so issues. But I don't know. We'll find

out when I go dig that out of my bin later when

we're done recording. But at least we have that

figured out for our listeners. Now they know.

Yeah, I wish I knew because I'm like going through

this and I'm like, crap. Yeah, no, I don't know

what that is because I'm just Running through

Yeah some moment up just from a storytelling

standpoint, they probably might have put something

back in. You got the director's cut, dude. This

is why I get the trade paperbacks. This is why

I wait for the trades. All right, so the next

issue, Captain Mitchell, this is Agent Bishop.

They are hunting the turtles and no mutant presence,

and they do see a sole biological entity, a small

reptilian creature, classification non -mutant

and harmless. Pepperoni! They're at the turtle's

current lair and Metalhead is telling him to

order his soldiers to retreat because the turtles

aren't there. They have an argument back and

forth and Bishop says Fine, you're the expert

after all, though I have to question your decision

to leave without even a cursory investigation.

I'm confident the good Captain and his men could

have overcome the security within. You are mistaken.

Retreat was the correct strategy. You must not

underestimate the technical acrimony of my primary

adversaries. Primary. Affirmative. The mutant

turtle called Donatello. Oh, Lord. And the turtle

van crashes into Harold's place. Oh, Harold's

so tired of this stuff. Mm -hmm. And he sees

Y though, and they're like, okay, we'll help.

And April gets a call in the middle of the night.

Donnie, everything okay? Not even close. It's

Jenica. Karai stabbed her and she's in bad shape.

And they want April to see if they can do what

they did with her dad. Which means they have

to get Lindsay from the Mutanimals. The magic

mutation tea that took away her dad's stroke

problems. Yep, absolutely. And they go running

off. And I can't skip over this though because

I was going to, but I can't. showed up on the

FDR and that stupid fish decided to go for a

swim. Instead of messing with them, Koya took

off too. Who cares? Where's Jenny, dammit? She's

with Harold and Libby, Casey. They're stabilizing

her, but they're only going to be able to do

so much. What are you saying? Basically, Donnie

tells them, take the van and go get Lindsay right

now. Come on, Casey. Let's go. I'll drive. I

know a shortcut, and... Donnie, was that Raph

and Casey? Uh -huh. Why aren't they going so

damn fast? Where? To get the help Jenny needs,

and holy crap. I know it was always Donnie and

Casey in the original 90 film and the original

movie, but Raph and Casey have kind of always

had this thing... They were more adversaries.

They're friendly, but like I mean, you know The

whole scene in Central Park and everything else

but in the movie It was always I always felt

Donnie had the had the more friendship with Casey

here I'm like, ooh, they've gotten past Central

Park even though that has nothing to do with

the IDW series Yeah, but like, you know as you

see later with them, it's like oh Wow, like that

is just so So well done. And we get to Splinter

and Karai, or not Karai, that's Yumiko. And Leonardo

was on the phone and talking about Genica, another

secret meeting and foolish children, have I not

told you that negotiations with our enemies are

mine alone to undertake? And it's a really good

back and forth. Yeah, Leo keeps doing that And

I think with good reason though because again,

he's showing splinter that Not everything is

as you as you think it is and he sells him. I

think some of the crime families have switched

sides Father are you still there Leonardo remain

with Jenica assist? Harold and Libya with whatever

care they need. I will tend to the other matter

once again another perfect picture for me where

That's an angry rat That's a well -drawn well

colored well facial expression angry rat Yeah,

I forgot where we oh I okay now I remember where

Casey and Raff were going speeding down the road,

they're going to get Lindsey. Yep. What I love

about them is this kind of agreement with them.

Basically, no more waiting around to get hurt.

Hold up no Herman and we see all of the mutanimals.

Hi, I'm Pete What's going on, huh looks like

what's it look like turtle a more aggressive

approach and You know Lindsey and all this and

Basically Basically, Raph is going to stay with

Hub, or at least it looks like he will. And actually

he does. Haircase, you get Lindsay to Harold.

I'm staying. Turn him before they hurt us. You

sure, bro? Yeah, right. And yikes. Yep. And that's

an interesting thing, because not that long ago,

Raph was ready to quit. Not quit, but escape

the violence. to let it go, just let it play

out and not be a part of it. But as soon as one

of his own gets taken out, he's gone so far as

to even abandon his brothers for the more violent

approach of the mutant animals. Yeah, absolutely.

Yeah. And again, I think Raph is the only one

of them that can be the turtle that's everywhere.

Because I mean Donnie does machines Leo is the

Boy Scout Mikey is the caretaker and Mikey is

always the The emotional one in this series and

that's not I'm not saying that to say a bad thing.

I'm just saying that Leo is the Boy Scout Donnie

is the tech guy Mikey is the emotional kind of

like we need to look out for everybody kind of

person and Raph is is the angry one. But as I

said earlier the anger for Raph is We see it

kind of getting worse. Splinter goes to the crime

families and all of that. That's not good. It

is not good at all. This is not what Leo would

have wanted. This whole panel with splinter is

like holy crap Yikes and we see leatherhead Which

I feel like he's coming out of left field for

me, I know he's been around and I can't remember

I Can't ever remember where leatherhead is at

a point and I've seen pictures of leatherhead

Without mentioning spoilers where something very

strange has happened to him I don't know if that's

happened yet or if that's coming. I think it

has happened. We just don't have the reveal of

it yet. And I have to say when it is revealed,

I'm just going to say this now and I'll say it

when we talk about it, when we actually reveal

it, even though everybody's already known by

now, that creeped me the hell out. It really

did. So Hob's plan is to attack Null. Well, his

plan is to attack Null to distract them while

Mondo goes in and gets some computer stuff done

and it's an all out battle. With the Mutanimals

here and their ultra -violent approach and I

mean there's so much of it that is pulled from

the old Archie series where the Mutanimals were

with Null being their villain, but what I think

I miss most about the mutanimals and what their

role was is the environmentalism of it. They

always went after the polluters and know the

corporation was a big polluter. They fit what

they need to fit here in the IDW verse and it's

full of interesting characters but Man Ray does

not feel like the Man Ray. That we've known before

because it's just he's not at all concerned about

what's happening in the water. He's not Ninja

Turtle Aquaman here and and So that that part

does kind of make me go Oh, I kind of wish that

that was an angle that they could work in but

old Hobb wouldn't have that that's not what he's

all about yeah, no and Mondo's heading towards

the server and of course Hobb hasn't told Raph

about any of this that Mondo's doing this whole

tech thing and and Mondo gets in and Sees all

these miniature mutant skeletons or whatever.

Yeah, that's not too gnarly And alien hacking

skills of Mondo gecko give me the good stuff

What good stuff Dude cardiac arrest much I said

what good stuff which good stuff do you think

turtle? Did you think this was only about kicking

ass and taking names tonight? Nah blowing this

place all the hell was just a cake Mondo's taking

care of the cherry on top part that still don't

answer my question They're stealing all the technology

and I understand Hobbs point and he You know,

Null was making slaves and he wants to make soldiers.

And the question is, what does Raph want? And

I was not expecting Raph to say what he says,

but again, going through Guided View, getting

a super up close look at his eye. Oh man. Like,

I don't know what he's going to say, but then

it gets revealed. I want in. Holy crap. Holy

crap. What a way to end an issue and I am so

glad so glad I did not read this in singles Might

Need to know the story might it would just be

going crazy right now So the next issue starts

with Donnie Harold Lindsay April's on the thing

with Libby Jenny is in a The cylinder type tube

and like you said, they're gonna do the magic

tea thing and Yeah, that's that's what's going

on there and I Love Harold. We're just waiting

on you bunch to quit yapping at the TV Harold

look either everyone quits talking and we get

to it or This girl is history Go to another part

of the the Harold's lab here with angel and Casey

and alopex Mikey and Leo We get the TMNT 94 note

about the you know raft ditch dude after like

that after to go after null and And they're trying

to tell Leo that he has been through a lot lately

and Leo's like Who here hasn't? I know Raph's

got some serious crap to work out, but you don't

abandon a friend when they're down. He should

be here with Ginny, with us. Making excuses for

him all the time isn't gonna get him better.

Casey being the good friend. Leonardo's just

being really obtuse here. He doesn't see the

situation from Raphael's point of view, but Casey

does. Oh yeah. Yep. You know, Raph's out there

doing something. He's not here wiping away tears

and patting people on the back. Casey says, it's

like you can either wait for something to happen

and feel helpless the whole time, or you can

go do something about it. And Raph is electing

to do something. Yep, absolutely. And the thing

is, you know, we get back to the infirmary with

Jenny and all them, and Lindsay says, what we've

learned, it does though, is greatly enhance the

regeneration faculties and the subjects it's

administered to. We found out the hard way at

StockGen that the mutation process was gruesomely

fatal. to specimens that were given a mutagen

formula by itself. Crucifully, don't ask. Don't

ask. Yeah, you don't want to know about that.

And in layman's terms, it's a miracle cure. Look,

oh my God, it's true. She looks like she's coming

out of it. And then beep, beep, beep. Here comes

Metalhead. Hello, Donatello. Thought I might

find you here Of course the EPF is is on the

outside waiting for orders and Have you heard

the man what was that it sounds like there's

a helicopter oh boom So a battle between the

turtles and the EPF don't let him get to Jenny

and again All out battle. Meanwhile, Donatello

and Metalhead are having a, uh, a, uh, tet, a

tet here where Metalhead's like, the feeling

one is repeating a moment that has already been

experienced. And that's a note back to the macro

series when we did that. Target R was the macro

series issue with, uh, with RAF. So we have covered

that. So we have covered RAF's, um, stuff. It

just apparently is finally getting to a point

where we're seeing it in the main main series.

Yeah, they're referring back to it. Yep. Love

that Metalhead's like, a critical reminder just

how devious you two are. Don't let that thing

touch the girl. Well, what about you? There's

something I need to get. Hold tight. No, wait!

And Metalhead fires a shot and tries to hit Libby,

but instead he hits one of the canisters. Oh

no, the ooze is gone. Yup. And Donnie goes after

him. Donnie attacks Metalhead. It wasn't enough.

She's slipping away again. And... You know metalheads

like you're about to learn and and Libby shows

up in this thing that Harold made. Hello metalhead

properly introduced. My name is Libby And I'm

in charge of security here Yeah, very much Say

power lifter robot suit. Yeah, absolutely and

I love the The biological scanner thing. Oh,

that's so cool. So that is so so good and the

The EPF are still attacking and the turtles are

like regroup and retreat because or not Leo get

everyone to the van a van, but the lasers are

disabled just get inside the van now and Libby

is basically, um, gonna do, uh, some really,

really shocking things to Metalhead. Um, and,

uh, Harold and Donnie have this plan now, Donatello.

Hurry, dammit. Mikey drive. Where, dude? Straight.

Through the portal. But go, Mike. Going. And

they will not escape hate to disappoint you and

Supposedly, you know Metalheads like what coordinates

did you send them to if you do not tell me I

will deduce them eventually Then I suggest you

get busy deducing Blows his computers with thermite.

Yep Libby and Harold are okay, but the EPF are

going to arrest them for aiding and abetting

the mutants. And yeah, wow. Holy crap. That's

a lot of action going on there. A lot of stuff.

I love how we have... We still have the individual

story points and story, like... After we see

Harold and let me get arrested here. We're gonna

cut back to Baxter But this whole thing with

metalhead and Donnie and all of that. Oh my god

the fact that I Never thought in my life in you

know in 88 and 89 when I wanted a metalhead figure

that eventually I would see a story where he

becomes sentient Mm -hmm. Oh, man, it's so good

April's trying to get a hold of Donnie and We

have no visiting dr. Stockman That's not good

this version of dr. Stockman I find fascinating

as well as I'm used to him being the sniveling

sidekick But he's a very capable opponent here,

and I think as the series has got on he's only

become more and more dangerous through his he's

got it planned out already and so he's in a room

with a snake mutant this like crab crustacean

angry mutant and this vampire oh it's a scorpion

and this vampire lady who he's never met before

with red horns and he's just kind of chill sitting

there in the chair like he's he's got it handled

or at least he thinks he does crazy yeah Yeah,

it's it's absolutely crazy and Not that I want

Baxter to become a fly at all in this series

But I'm just like waiting for that before you

know, I'm waiting for the moment. Yeah where

he becomes, you know a mutant himself Yeah, it's

it's I'm okay if it never happens, but at the

same time When it eventually does happen, it'll

be about time Absolutely. So the coordinates

that the portal sent them to was the old lair,

because supposedly that's the last place that

Metalhead would look, even though he knows where

the old lair is. And, um, we have a bloody Jenny

and we have Lindsay and Harry and, you know,

wait, what are you guys doing? Plan C. There's

a plan C. There is now. And I remember seeing

number one, Jenny bloody in the back of the van.

And then I remember in the advertisements and

everything else. And then I remember seeing Jenny

as a turtle. I do not remember at all in any

of the news coverage for this, if they ever said

how she became a turtle. But obviously it's because.

They use Leo's blood. Yep, for a transfusion.

I'm gonna say that I don't think a simple blood

transfusion from one of the mutant turtles would

turn people into other mutant turtles. I'm gonna

just pretend in my headcanon that it's because

she had already gotten some mutagen. Is now getting

this blood transfusion. That's what I'm gonna

Yeah, that that's it. She got one part of the

the the transfusion She didn't get the ooze which

which was supposed like she got the healing part

of it She got the other part of it, but the ooze

part Was the part of the mixture that is supposed

to just heal her now that she has some ooze in

her the rest comes from Leo and Yeah, that's

that's the only way I can explain it and here

goes and then we see the transformation immediately

and oh What a way to end an issue. Holy crap

What a way to end a trade like I know they did

this in part one and part two and I'm glad that

they did not do one whole big trade with all

of all Issued 90 to 100. I'm glad they didn't

do that. But man leaving on the cliffhanger of

Jenny turning into a mutant turtle and It makes

sense because it's not just you know I remember

in the old cartoon how they explain the mutagen

in the 87 cartoon where Splinter was most around

humans. So he became a human rat. The turtles

were most around their human boy that the boy

had them. So they became humanoid turtles. Here,

it's done in a way that not only is so powerful

and emotional between Karai stabbing her and

Leo saving her. If you think about it, Karai,

whatever motive she has, Jenny and Leo, they

are the three honor characters in this series.

They're all about like, Jenny was never going

to betray Master Splinter. You know, the only

way Karai would ever, you know, have the chance

to do whatever is if obviously tried to kill

her kind of thing. So. I love that all three

of them are kind of tied to this kind of thing

now, between Karai killing her and Leo saving

her and her being the honorable person that she

is. So what do you think, sir, as we end on this

cliffhanger here? As this was occurring, I'm

a member of a number of Ninja Turtle fan groups

on Facebook and I hit the subreddits. And there

were very mixed reviews on this. And sometimes

I think like a lot of our fandoms, I get let

down sometimes if I read too much from the Internet.

And none of us, no matter our opinion, is in

a position to do any kind of gatekeeping or to

diminish other people's level of fandom based

on the content. But Jenica, as a turtle, has

been a very divisive force in turtle fandom as

we don't usually like the female turtle when

they cram it in that that fox kids tv show with

uh and i get venus and it's venus yeah venus

de milo i get venus and and mona lisa confused

name -wise in my head because i think they were

both kind of a female turtle attempt but If if

they were going to do it if they were going to

do a female turtle in this series I don't think

you could go the Venus direction because that

concept is tainted by the the Fox television

show the Fox live -action show But this was like

IDW has been successful at doing from the beginning

The best way to do it. She is an interesting

character to do it to to make a turtle It's a

natural way and this is something that they have

been planning. If we talk to the editors or if

we listen to the editors in the interviews that

they've done, they've known this was coming since

the beginning of Genica. Oh yeah, Bobby even

said when we talked to him that it's been the

plan the whole time and I like it. I think it's

cool. I think it's interesting. I think it's

a good thing. that they're doing this in a way

that, as I've said this entire series, pays homage

to everything in the TMNT universe. You know

actually our already did exist in the Mirage

run but is new alopex all of these new things

fit and it's so they're contributing bits of

lore to the mythos 2 and I think We will be seeing

these characters in 15 years Animated somewhere.

Oh, yeah, absolutely It is it is very wonderful.

It's very interesting that they're doing this

it is just awesome. I love that they're doing

this. I think it's so good. When you put a female

turtle in there, like when Fox Kids did it, they

did it to be inclusive of a female demographic.

That was a marketing decision. It didn't feel

natural to the turtles. While IDW can do this

in a completely different way, accomplish the

same goal, but it doesn't feel like a marketing

ploy. That's impressive and I think that's the

difference between the two characters and that's

also why When I do see fans complaining about

Jenny and what's happening in the post 100 issues

of Ninja Turtles some people dismiss it as This

kind of inclusion woke signal virtue signaling

but no it's so natural this fits and I feel like

they don't understand some of the things that

like you and I understand about where the turtles

came from and why they exist and what the themes

are I really do think they just there's a number

of people out there who think being a true fan

means you want the four ninja turtles in dark

colors or black and white Killing things drinking

beer and cursing and like mmm. I don't know IDW

does a good job with very little to none of that

IDW has done a amazing job since they've had

it and they've allowed us to like They even have

some of the old, they've had to do reprints of

it, the old Mirage stuff, so they have that for

people. If people want to go back to the old

Mirage stuff, it's available. The very best of

it. Yeah, but if you want a turtles story, unlike

we have ever had, Very few comic series get to

100 or more issues. Very few. I mean, nowadays,

I would say in the last eight years of this podcast,

very few get to 100. Some end at 50, some end

at 57, some end on a weird number, whatever it

is. But between Kevin Eastman, Tom Lentwold,

Bobby Kernow, all of the artists that are doing

amazing amazing art for this like this entire

run I had no problem with how any of the turtles

looked I love how we get the the glimpse in the

in the transformation for Jenny from human to

turtle it was not grotesque it was just this

gradual change and oh by the way she is now a

turtle which we leave off on the on the cliffhanger

until next week for you know when we get to city

at war part two which is issues 96 through 100

and it's just so well done absolutely so city

at war part one issues 90 to 95 overall what

would you grade this story zero to five i think

we are back at uh back at fives for idw turtles

there was Even though we had a little disconnect

in the middle because my because the trade has

that extra couple of pages of the escape But

other than that for the actual content there

is nothing here. I did not like There is no story

beats here. I didn't like there's no art here.

I didn't like there's no art that made me cringe

there's a couple of pieces of art that that you

know gave me pause but Nothing in a bad way or

anything like that. Again, it made me think about

certain things like that panel where Leatherhead

is being watched by the EPF or whatever. And

again, taking the characters in directions that

no other medium can do. I hope at one point some

of these stories can get adapted. into Like animated

movies or something if they go that route, but

at the same time I am perfectly fine with none

of this getting adapted because You should be

at 99 because I want issue 100 to be its own

podcast. I have to edit this out. I want issue

99 to be its own podcast and in between issue

99 which is the end of the next episode, the

episode after that we're doing Shredder in Hell.

So we're going to see what the hell is up with

Shredder in Hell and that book, all of it is

done by Mateus Santolucco. fully understood what

the heck was going on and what they were all

talking about. So that'll be a good one to reread.

Yep. And then like I said, episode 425 will be

issue 100 and then we will come back at some

point. I don't know if it'll be this year or

next year because it doesn't look like I have

any other turtle stuff on the schedule this year.

But I mean, ladies and gentlemen, we're going

to give you five episodes of all turtles and

we're going to get to the quote unquote end of

the 100 issue run even though it's still continuing

on 101 to whatever they're up to now 117 119

I don't remember what they're up to now so that's

what's going on there make your god damn it I'm

losing my mind you got anything else you want

to talk about anything else you want to promote

are we doing geek sales yet or is covid still

killing that You know, I'm gonna I'm gonna play

by the seat of my pants and I think by the end

of the summer Will have committed to a date if

we're gonna do it, but I'm optimistic that by

then enough people will be vaccinated and People

will be smart and it is an outdoor event. So,
