About this Episode

The Pull Bag crew dives deep into the finale of Radiant Black's first arc—a sprawling 40-page issue packed with emotional stakes, major character deaths, stunning artwork, and a climactic battle that shifts the series into new territory. Mike, Edward, and Kendra break down pacing problems, jarring reveals, unexplained character introductions, and what feels like setup for a completely different story direction, all while praising the consistently gorgeous art.

This is writer Kyle Higgins and you've jumped

inside the pull bag only on the GeekCast Radio

Network. You've just jumped inside the pull bag.

Join TFG1 Mike and the rest of the comic crew

here at the GCRN as they make their great escape

into comics. From DC, Marvel and Image to IDW,

Bloom Studios and Xenoscope. We have everything

right here. We cover things like Transformers,

He -Man, Super Heroes, TMNT and Radiant Black.

Yeah, we have all that and so much more. It's

all inside the pull bag here on the Geekcast

Radio Network. So, without further ado, it's

time to talk about the comics we're reading right

now, here inside the pull bag. Hello and welcome

to The Polebag! This is episode 419. I am of

course TF2 and Mike. Joining me as always is

Edward and Kendra the Hales. Hello. Hello. Hello!

Yes, and we are here and we are back to talk

about Radiant Black Number 5. This will be a

full -on spoiler review. And apparently, Edward,

I don't know. What is the deal, dude? What happened?

This issue happened Like Okay So the first four

issues of this arc Mm -hmm. I was taken on this

really kind of personal human drama Adventure,

you know what I'm saying? We we got into the

nitty -gritty of what made each of these characters

tick and The superhero element of it was kind

of just you know Showcase piece, you know get

some flashy art in there, which was great. Don't

get me wrong, okay then this issue happened and

it took all that and threw it out the window

and turned the M book into Mighty Morphin Power

Rangers And I'm saying this while looking at

my computer screen with the most deadly serious

space on the planet it pulled out a every single

trope that I could ever imagine from a comic

book in 31 pages. And I don't even think it was

31 pages. I think it was less than that, wasn't

it? Nah, it was... It was more, I think. Yeah,

it was a 40 -page issue, but, like, it ended

on page 31, and the rest of it was, like, stuff

and flow. And it didn't even end. It was a cliffhanger,

which this is supposed to be the end of the arc.

But it's set up for the bat the big bad to show

up and then the next issue is gonna be like a

Dragon Ball Z filler episode Yeah, I can kind

of see how that might take you out of it Before

we get too much further into this obviously the

creative Kyle Higgins on writing as always because

obviously it's his series the artists on this

are Eduardo Ferragato who did pages 1 through

23 And then Marcelo Costa, pages 24 to 28. So

some behind the scenes things here, folks. If

you didn't know, Marcelo's hand got injured somehow.

He is fine now. He is recovered. But at the time

of production of issue five, he had gotten injured.

Well, hopefully he has good health now. Yeah.

The colorist is Natalia Marquez. Letter is Becca

Carey. Editor and designer is Michael Busudi.

Busudil. I can't pronounce his name. Yeah, there

you go. Can't do it. Apologize later. Yes, apologize

later. Sorry. And it's funny, I've tried watching.

They actually do, I forget, I think it's. Strawberry

17 on Twitch or something. She started this whole

show called radiant radio where she actually

has Kyle and Michael and some of the other people

on each each time an issue releases or an issue

is out or whatever. And I've also been listening

to that. I've been trying to watch that. I wish

it was an audio form. I cannot. This is nothing.

It's not about radiant radio, but I cannot do

video podcasts. I just cannot. I need it in audio

so I can do other things as I'm paying attention

and listening. It's just a me thing, folks. No

distractions. Exactly. So this issue, oh boy,

Nathan is dead and we must move on. Well. I mean.

Well. He's not Yeah Somehow some is a little

bitter boots this issue ladies Yeah, I apologize

to the listeners but a little shitty this episode

I Mean I get it we got so invested with the story

of the boy who the man who you know tried to

make it in Hollywood and then had to move home

and has 40K in debt and has to do all this stuff.

But I mean, Nathan was so hesitant with the radiance.

So was Peter Parker. Yeah, Peter Parker was too.

But you know what kills me is that in the back,

because each of these, I said episodes, each

of these issues. It has a section at the end

of it where you have these letters from the fans.

From readers, yeah, yeah, blackmail. Yep. Yep,

right. And Kyle tries his best, or whoever is

addressing them tries their best to answer the

questions and concerns and all that nonsense.

And one of the things that struck me when I was

looking through them and it... It wasn't even,

it was just like a glance because I was just

skimming over them because quite frankly we don't

ever usually include those in the reviews so

I don't usually pay attention to them. Right.

But one line caught my eye and it was that some

fans really thought the natural progression of

the book was going to be for Nathan to pass which

is why for some it wasn't a huge shocker. It

didn't have I think the impact that they really

true like on one hand yes it had the impact they

were looking for. But some vans it was well,

we always thought Marshall was going to be the

clearly defined person who should have taken

over because like you just said Nathan is very

hesitant about the power and like we talked about

last podcast Nathan really didn't do anything

like Not until that issue not until issue four

like he'd been a little bit intrigued But he

was more concerned with himself and was trying

to figure out his path in life Without the power

versus the other way around where his life adapted

to the power Whereas marshall was just like hey

gung -ho. I know what this is. These are your

powers. Let's do this Yeah, so that was kind

of something that struck me was just that fans

really already were on board With they dying

like they there wasn't there wasn't this one.

They were just like, oh, he's a red shirt I You

know, I I don't think And I know from what Kyle

has said and from what other people have said

and things like that Wasn't really a bait and

switch. It was a plan all along kind of thing.

I think it's a really Weird way to get us invested

in a character, but as you just said and I said

a second ago Nathan Didn't like like you said

he's more focused on how he's going to get out

of the jam he's in and when these powers come

along He's not He's just not the hero type clearly

Yes, I know folks. It's a Tony Stark line. Oh,

you know your average Joe guy next door Suddenly

has this experience, but that's kind of really

where it stopped Yeah, he didn't know what to

do with it. He didn't know again my I think it

was was it issue four issue three that I made

all the all the comparisons to other things at

one point I said that Nathan is essentially Dante

and Marshall is Randall from Clerks. Dante is

not comfortable with his station in life, and

he doesn't even know how to change his station

in life, whereas Randall knows... Yeah, pretty

much. So while some fans may have expected this,

I did not. It hit me weird because I figured,

oh, maybe this is the point where him not knowing

the powers, him not knowing the deal with Radiant

Red, whatever else, and Nathan being like, oh,

well, OK, I finally get it. I have to save all

of these people. And he did try to save all the

people in the building. wasn't like he wasn't

going to just stand there and not do anything.

He died saving those people. So I guess he's

sort of a hero. I don't I mean, he's I don't

know. He's Uncle Ben. Let's be for serious here.

Yeah, that could just be a really good set of

morals and ethics based on upbringing. I mean,

that doesn't necessarily have to be. part of

the archetype of what makes a hero I mean you

could put a normal person in that situation and

you're gonna have the fight -or -flight response

yeah yeah this is what I mean by it he they killed

him to give motivation for what's his face to

become Marshall Marshall Marshall you know that's

why he even accepts everything is because His

best friend in the entire universe just died

his entire world as he actually says later on

in the issue. Yeah You took my whole world from

me Yeah, so maybe there was more to it than just

best friends, but I don't know well, I don't

think it was that far, but I Don't know. It's

just you know, it's like some of your best friends

are your family kind of thing and you know Marshall

seemed like Marshall Don't want to say seemed

is in past tense because Marshall is the current

character Marshall seems like through the first

four issues that when we met him and all that

like He had all these plans. He's the one that

set up the social media He's the one he's basically

the background guy for Nathan kind of you know

Pulling the strings for Nathan to kind of show

Nathan the ropes and this kind of thing and everything

else And now he has to be the one that is doing

everything I think that's a testament to Kyle's

writing because I'm not going to lie, there's

going to be some naysay on that in this issue.

But when it comes to how he created the dynamic

between Nathan and Marshall, you've brought up

every point beautifully because, I mean, you

see it from the beginning. Nathan wasn't even

comfortable enough to tell his parents what was

going on. But the first moment that he and Marshall

had, alone together where they could actually

talk freely he was the first person to tell him

just how bad it was yeah i mean and that's a

testament to their friendship because nathan

could have been gone i don't remember if we've

actually been given a time frame of how long

he's been out of town It's one of those friendships

where this person has been out of that You know

Nathan and Marshall haven't been in each other's

lives But it's like coming right back into that

relationship as soon as he's back. So obviously

they have a very very deep bond Yeah, I want

to say they've been friends since childhood,

maybe high school Something like that. It's been

a long time. I do love Marshall's outburst and

his whole like he goes through all of the Stages

of grief as he crashes like he suits up as Radiant

black flies off and crashes into the ground and

he's like he doesn't want it You know this that

the other thing and he's trying to breathe and

then we just see him sitting in the snow fuck

Like I love how they did that I thought that

was really really cool Yeah, and don't get me

wrong and even Ed will will concede to this this

may not be his favorite issue But it doesn't

detract away from the emotional points of the

issue. The artwork is phenomenal I mean with

with our You know first 20. What did you say

wonder 23 the first 23 pages being done by a

brand new artist? You almost can't really tell

and you almost can't really tell at all. Yeah

I mean, it feels just like coming right back

home, and that's a testament to the talent level.

But, I mean, regardless of whether you like the

writing part of the issue and the story progression,

the artwork in this is choice. It is absolutely

stunning. It evokes the emotions that you want.

And obviously it did with you because you can

remember, boom, this hit me. Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

And it's not just because I have the... book

open on Comixology either, so. No, it's not just

because of that. No. I mean, for me, the first

few pages of the book, I mean, him dealing with

Nathan being dead or brain dead and, you know,

zipping out of there and the whole fuck basically

was, that was great. That's what I expected from

it and that's what I wanted from it. The rest

of it was not. One story point at a time. I know.

So have you guys read Invincible? Yes. I'm working

on it. I have not. Do it. I know. I have a lot

of things to do. So Invincible, I don't know

when I will get to it, but I do love the fact

that they got Circle Guide News to actually be

The news program that's and the actual people

that do that That podcast they they put in this

universe. So I do absolutely love that I think

that is super cool that there is a radiant black

invincible Do I write Kyle Kyle Higgins is gonna

write us into the damn thing and kill me off

I don't know about that but Would it be the old

man or the little girl that kills you off, though?

Little girl. Got to do it. A sigh. It better

be Marshall, at least. You're right. I absolutely

love that part. Now, granted, I like any good

fan should I'm sitting here like I just want

to smack the off of this guy who's talking all

kinds of trash. But to be fair, I mean. Would

be the person in the background being like look

we don't know the whole situation. How are you?

Just so uh Stop stop being that way It was really

cool to see that. I'm glad you brought that up

Yeah, I mean that's you know, that's part of

the issue It's part of what because Marshall

is sitting there at the hospital and like you

guys said we don't know All as I know is from

the looks of Nathan in the beginning at the end

the last issue in the beginning Of this issue

the dude looks dead And Marshall is sitting there

at the hospital and trying to figure out what's

going on. And he's, he decides to put on this

newscast to see what, what these, you know, what,

what circle guy news is saying about the radiant

black stuff and everything else and his reaction

to douche bags. And, uh, that's when we get the

full on emotional part of it with Mr. And Mrs.

Burnett coming out and. you know, he's hooked

up to all kinds of tubes so many tubes and and

everything and They're not seeing any brain activity

And what confuses the hell out of me is who the

hell is Kathy? Oh the godmother that just walked

in a fucking left field Wait a damn minute. Did

I miss like an in -between like a half or a zero

issue or some shit like that where she was relevant

at all? Like there were so many like asterisk,

Kyle Higgins, asterisk. There were so many places

where she could have fit in seamlessly, where

it wouldn't have felt as forced as it did here.

She could have been there when his mom was coming

back with the groceries and the cop showed up

at the house. You know, she could have been there

as part of the welcoming party to be like, oh,

you're back. It's so nice to see you. But this

feels so, so just forced. Yeah. It's like somebody

was standing behind Kyle while he was writing

the issue with a gun to his head now put a random

character in there that nobody fucking knows

about You know, that's kind of how I felt when

I interviewed the guy anyway, never mind That's

a whole other story DC editorial whatever Listen

to and I don't know if you guys have or not But

like I said, I've been listening to the radiant

black podcast which is done by two guys. I'm

sorry guys. I can't Remember your names off top

my head, but there are these two awesome guys

that are doing this and they're doing the same

thing we're doing they're doing episodes issue

by issue kind of thing and You know, they were

Hypothesizing about who Kathy is is she a construct

from the from the radiant? Is she this is she

that is she whatever and I don't know I have

no clue and I don't I just want to know like

Some random one line like okay. I'm sorry. I'm

his godmother That's not just the random one

line. I need like I need some other weird weird

thing Do it right and have like the dad or the

mom say something like oh you traveled all this

way You know just to give us some kind of context

because there's so much time that passes between

these issues You cannot tell me that he hasn't

bumped into her at least once if they live in

the same town Yeah, and apparently they do because

she got to the hospital quickly enough Along

with the parents. Yeah, you'd think It was just

a weird scene and really that's my only negative

on this issue is it it's just a weird thing where

this random strange woman and You know Anybody

can be anybody's godparent like it would be different

if this was Nathan's mother. It would be different

if this is Nathan's grandmother or something

or whatever. I don't know. And then we get radiant

contact or the being contacting Marshall. So

now we're getting into Marshall's connection

with the radiant. Hold on. Hold on just a second.

Did it feel to you when you're reading this?

when it transitioned from him standing in the

hospital and random godmother shoehorn comes

in and then all of a sudden we got the Radiant

communicating with him and everything like that

I mean it feel really disjointed like there were

something missing like a page or two To you because

it sure as hell felt that way to me It didn't

to me because I'm like we need to move on past

this we need to move on past this weird unknown

godmother thing Yeah, I at least needed a doctor

to come out and be like, yeah, you know, all

right We have him on life support his heart rate

is steady and holding his breathing is okay But

he's hooked up to a machine to help him breathe,

but we're still not detecting any brain innovative

activity We're hoping that but you know, I mean

give me some ER man. I mean fucking come on This

is but it was character driven in the beginning

and then it just was like no Random godmother

showed up and screwed up a whole formula Instead

of sugar, you know, I Mean it's too bad. She's

not holding the wand and there's a couple of

mice on her shoulder Where's Dumbledore is he

in the background too? I mean It's Hagrid outside

taking out all the lights No, but I I felt like

his again Marshall at this point when she comes

in and is yelling and blah blah blah blah you

see marsh like The three characters are in the

in the in the foreground Marshall is almost in

the background not really paying attention. So

when the radiant hits him In that first panel

where you see Kathy in shadow and mr. Burnett

in shadow Like that to me is like Marshall is

elsewhere Marshall is trying to figure this out

or he's trying to you know, whatever and then

Yeah And then this whole thing happens, and...

Sort of hits him up. Rangers, your shit's about

to go down. As now. You better be prepared, as

in ready. For whatever their shit is. All is

I can think of is when you said sort out I'm

like sort on of else I have I even use his voice

in my head like oh Six thousand years give you

such a crink in the neck I've missed so much

the Spanish plague the this that whatever or

another the bubonic plague the Spanish Inquisition

Like oh god Yeah, so Their connection is much

more fluid than radiant and Nathan's connection

right and They explained to the the radiant explains

to Marshall about how he is coming. He will destroy

you He will destroy your planet war is coming

and again I have to say I do love the whole like

where parentheses like where he says but war

is near and then in soon as parentheses For the

radiant, he will kill you and your entire. I

love how they're using parentheses and, and,

and other things. Like it's almost like a syntax

language kind of thing. I think that is super

cool. Yeah. Yeah. I dig that. And the, the page,

the full on page where all of that happens. I

just love the way Marshall looks. I love the

art on it. Uh, Eduardo did an amazing job with

where. It almost looks like he's he's obviously

it's a face cut down the middle like a face off

kind of thing where one half is Marshall's face.

The other half is the radiant mask. And I just

love that. And I love that he is like, look,

first of all, you have to let me deal with my

friend and, you know, find all that as soon as

you help me with that. I'll do whatever cosmic

shit you want me to do. Right. I appreciated

that. Was like, yeah, there's his motivation

to become radiant black. You know what Marshall

reminds me Probably of so many characters, but

at this point in time He reminds me a lot of

Guy Gardner Because he's got the attitude but

he also has this like Beautiful humor he's got

the attitude but he's not so much of a dick as

Guy Gardner is I think that's left that that's

up for discussion I mean oh well I mean again

we will see as we go through this but it's like

I Mean it was even said what was it in Young

Justice? Wasn't there another Green Lantern on

Earth guy Gardner both John and Hale look at

both John and Hale turn no like there's just

One, two, eight, one, four Green Lantern you

don't ever want on your team. And that is definitely

Guy Gardner. I'm going to argue that point to

the grave. I've read Jeff Johns and John Tomasi's

run on Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corp.

Big Guy Gardner and a fucking heartbeat. Yeah,

that motherfucker code. Green Lantern Corp. Recharge.

And it's like five issue miniseries. I'm pretty

sure you could find it on Comixology. And talk

to me again about what you think about Guy Gardner

after reading that series. So we get to Radiant

Red, and Radiant Red is stupid, out of control.

You wanted to handle it. At least we agree on

something, asshole. You know, I just I love this

I think this is so awesome and we kind of get

some of the ER shit You wanted it. No, he's in

a coma Okay, so at least he's not dead. I mean

he's in a coma, but you know people have come

out of comas before Not without brain brain activity.

Yeah, no, yeah, they're brain dead. They don't

come out. That's You're there for eternity Or

listen Magical shit happens in the comic book

or they get magically resurrected Which I'm calling

no, but we're about to come up to a trope That

I was because there was hmm We'll get to my my

issues with this issue, but we're coming up on

a trope that I mean, it's really hard to avoid

uh -huh, because you really only have One of

two things you could have revealed at this point,

right? It just the timing of the reveal and the

purpose of the reveal. It hit wrong. So did it?

Okay. All right. Well, so, you know, he's in

a coma because of you. They go at each other.

And I love that panel of the two of them going

like that is an amazing fall. Yes, that is amazing.

By the way, none of my gripes. About this issue

of anything at all to do with any artwork in

the book at all. Yeah, it's the writing. Yes

strictly writing I Love the ice That is probably

my favorite part of this issue Yeah, that is

so cool. That's that's one good thing about setting

it in Illinois in the middle of winter is you

can always use ice effects And I do like that

Marshall does say, hey, eyes up. I'm not going

to do you like you did Nathan. I want you to

see this coming. Right. I do like that. I think

that is really good because that shows you that

he's like, you're going to get the beat down

of your life and you need to see it, that it's

coming because. Right. Like he's pissed, but

he's still honorable. That's like. You know,

Goku going full Super Saiyan for the first time,

you're gonna see this coming. Mm -hmm. Mm -hmm.

He's like, alright, cool. Awww, you fucked it

up. Stop it, better reach. No, hold on, let's

talk about a little something during this little

skirmish here. Uh -huh. You know, Kendra mentions

the ice. Just before Radiant Red is chucked into

the ice or whatever the hell it is. You know,

there's this... Massive like you know info drop

that was never mentioned in any other previous

issues with radiant red that Their power is based

on absorbing matter Mm -hmm What the shit how

did Marshall know this I know your powers are

based on absorbing matter what? Okay, the the

only thing that I will try to not necessarily

explain away, but come up with an explanation

for it That he is so in tuned with the radiant

Like he's accepted Nathan as I said earlier Nathan

was hesitant Nathan didn't really want it Marshall

wants it Marshall wants to know as long as the

radiant is going to help him do what he's currently

doing and he'll go do the radiance cosmic shit

afterwards like they are symbiotic now, so the

only thing I can think of is that the radiant

told him Somehow without telling us the readers.

Well, I think Kyle should have like Told us that

so we don't like what the fuck in the middle

of the comic. Yeah, I mean it literally pulled

me out of the situation. I mean, oh No, he does

have a line. He's right out in the middle of

this fight. Like I'm like, okay, cool. The fight's

cool. It's yeah, what? I just stared the line

for like five minutes. I'm like And then I sat

there for another five minutes, like, think about

this. Radiant Red's only been in a couple issues.

Never did they do anything. And then I discussed

this with Kendra. She read it too. And I'm like,

was there a spot where there was some matter

absorption going on between the fight last time

when they were doing the building and shit like

that? And we both came to the conclusion that

Radiant Red just kind of gingerly held one pillar

there with two fingers and a wicked stare. And

then fucking Marshall was like at Planet Hollywood

having a cheeseburger or some shit down the road.

But Kyle needs to put this in. I mean, even if

it's... in fucking parentheses when he's talking

about it to show, hey, the radiant is talking

through him and telling him that. But it is in

here, Ed. I don't know if it's actually in the

battle in issue four, but it is in here because

Marshall says to her when he's hitting her, I

watched you back at the restaurant absorbing

stuff. So in the battle with Nathan and Radiant

Red, yeah. I'm like thumbing through the issues

in my mind. No, he didn't do that. I mean, yeah.

We haven't gotten to that reveal yet. Sorry.

Yes, Radiant. But I called it from the get -go,

but whatever. Radiant Red's a chick. No, but

I mean, I get where it's coming from because

there's a healthy amount of trusting your reader

to follow along and, you know, going off of your

intelligence. That one, I have to admit it, I

actually went back through the issues to see

if I could see if it was like a Where's Waldo,

where you could spot the difference. Uh huh.

To see if there was anything that Marshall could

have seen while they were battling. And maybe

there was. Maybe it was something in the way

that their blasts went off. I don't know. But

I have to agree that I have a little more allusion

to that. Full stop. Sorry, folks. Even though

this is supposed to be issue five. They've made

me go back. The panel where Marshall's like,

oh, dude, you're in for it now. Also, don't worry.

I'm shooting video. You can watch your ass get

beat down in 120 frames per second. Right. OK.

So he grabs the phone. So he pulled a Ray Finkel.

Well, no. No, no, no, no, no. Laces out. Laces

out. He pulled a Ray Finkel. He captured the

fight on video and then studied it. Right, but

Radiant Red destroys the phone and Radiant Red,

the way he, she, it, they, them, whatever. Like

to the cloud. But the reason why Marshall says

that he saw her absorbing things at the restaurant

is because she essentially absorbed his phone.

Like literally, there's a panel here when she

says God, you're annoying. Run now or else. She

grabs his phone from him, and then we see her

hand. Here, I'm putting it in the chat so you

guys can see this, just because. And I'll have

to edit all of this, but I don't care. I think

you should leave this in. You should know how

much confusion this frickin' has. It looks like

she's absorbing it. It looks like she's using

her radiant power to burn it away. Yeah, it looks

like a fire. It doesn't look like, oh, well,

I took the properties of this phone and absorbed

it into my body. No, it looks like I used my

energy power to disseminate. Maybe that's what

the veins are. Maybe that's what these veins

are. It just looks like they're activating their

power. I don't know. And it's coming from within

instead of just the suit. I don't know. This

is why you shouldn't give super nerds the ability

to create your comic. Because we take it too

far. Yes, yes, we do. But that's the whole point

of the podcast, though, is to break down the

issue and tell us what we like and dislike about

it, so... True. Okay, so... I mean, yeah, I'm

being kind of a dick about it. You're not. I

mean... At the same time, it pulled me out of

the issue. Yeah. So, moving forward... Somehow

he knew whether it was the connection with Radiant

or whether it was because he was able to put

two and two together. off of being there watching

her disintegrate his phone. He knows. Yes, he

knows. All right, we'll just go with that. I

still wanted explanation, damn it. So that's

me. Tweet Kyle. Like I said, he does like he

does say in the in issue five, I watched you

back at the restaurant absorbing stuff. Yeah.

That's how you get more than just the phone.

They're having something else. Well, Marshall

was still there. It wasn't like he ran away and

hid in an alley, right? He was like, he specifically

says when Nathan quote unquote dies, I was with

him at the restaurant. I was right there. So

even though radiant red took the phone. and made

him, like, run away a little bit. I don't think

he ran too far that he wasn't gonna be able to

see the outcome. Plus, he was literally right

there when Nathan came out of the building. So

he had been there the whole time. So I'm sure,

even though we don't see him see her absorbing

powers, the fact that Kyle says right here, I

watched you back at the restaurant absorbing

stuff, that's how you get armored, huh? Transmuting

matter. You know? So it's gotta come from him

just having this... He's the Geekopedia. He is

the superhero expert. He's Ned Leeds from Spider

-Man. Far from him. So we'll go with that. And

then on to the reveal. On to the reveal. Radiant

Red is a chick. Spoiler. Sorry. Well, by the

time this podcast comes out the issue would have

been out for a month so hopefully y 'all know

If not, then if not now, you know, we already

said spoilers So, you know it is what it is.

I do like though that Before we get the full

reveal. They still have more of this battle to

go. Yeah and and Poor poor poor Marshall Dude

you gotta listen to Edna dude no capes Yeah,

you came out looking like all dr. Strange and

shit for a second I was like he was proud where

the capes come from are you spawning? He was

so proud of that cape he's like look at my And

you're right. We get this this full -on battle

of him. Just you know going like Full tilt powers

you dropped a building on my best friend. You

took away the one good thing in my life He was

a good person way better than me which sucks

for you because this is all I have now and I'm

not stopping until you're dead and then I just

wanted to scare. Yeah, I I don't necessarily

I don't know I It's so convenient. It's so cliche.

Well, I mean, on one hand, yes, there's the trope

because this is where that comes in. Another

one. But I'm so stuck between her feeling that

he is genuinely serious and this is about to

pop off and she thinks that maybe if she reveals

that she's a girl, he'll stop. But then I also

have the the thought process of she realizes

how serious he is and she doesn't want to fight

because she never intended for any of this to

happen in the way that it did. Yeah. So if something

happens to one of them, it's going to be because

of this, not necessarily a miscommunication,

but the mistake on her part. Right. So I'm a

little bit of a mixed bag of emotion on this

because on one hand, Yes, it's cool to finally

get to see exactly who Radiant Red is when we've

only gotten a partial face shot before. But at

the same time, it's just so the pacing is my

issue with this entire issue. Because it's so

boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. And you don't get

a chance like you have in other issues to sit

back. Take it in it feels like there was so much

information that needed to be in this issue and

there was no Way that it couldn't be in the issue.

So we just have to go I've read this issue For

maybe five times now I have Tried my best to

overanalyze Every single panel not only in the

writing and you're right it the art is amazing

hands down that it isn't in question but the

writing the emotions the way the art shows the

emotions whatever the emotions may be happiness

anger sadness whatever even showing you know

the fact that nathan is basically he looks like

he got beat up with a sack of quarters right

even though he's dying like his face man those

first few panels of this is like oh boy that

that just looks like you know Somebody whipped

you with a bag of half -dollar bills or something

So First of all The fact that and this is nothing

to do with the overall review or whatever But

the fact that they pointed this out and I love

this they are giving us so much story Even though

you guys feel that it is too much that we don't

get the time with it that we need to This issue

I feel is an issue that needs to be reread so

we can get, we as the audience can get more out

of it because there's so much here and again,

this makes absolutely no difference to me whatsoever.

But normally if this was a DC book or a Marvel

book or any other book anywhere else, this cover

price would have been $6, $7, $8 .99 because

of the page count. And it's not. It's the same

damn price as issues one through four. It's $3

.99. And for $4 to get this much story, to get

all of the emotions from Marshall, to find out

sort of kind of what's going on with Nathan,

obviously he's in the hospital, obviously he's

in a coma now that they've, you know, kind of

said that, at least Marshall said that to Radiant

Red, I'm digging it. I think it's great. I understand

your all's proclivities with it and I get it.

But I think up until the point of the reveal,

I was good. I was okay. I was fine with the reveal.

Even though the reveal is a trope, is a this,

is a that, whatever. I don't say trope is a demeaning

or as a bad thing. I just mean it's a trope.

Yeah, no, absolutely. I still trust Kyle because

we didn't know that was the thing. I always thought

Red was going to be a dude. Right? I never thought

he was going to be a girl. I was on Team Guy,

especially from the Partial Face show, but like

Ed said, Ed was always in Team Chica. Yeah, I

watched Loki and I called it the variant was

a female, so. Spoiler. Episode one, I'm right.

Oh, it's a girl. OK, let's go and let's move

on. Okay, I don't I don't want to sound this

is like my problem with it is The oh you're not

gonna hit me because I'm a girl Shit at the end,

you know towards the end of the fight that actually

kind of pissed me off Because it's that's not

the way the modern world thinks anymore I mean,

it's she's trying to pull out this bullshit card.

So he'll stop pounding the hell out of her Mm

-hmm. So you went with the other side of what

I was thinking. Yes. All right And I understand

that And I think it's more of, we don't get enough

time with the, like, we don't get a conversation

with her and Marshall. At least not in this issue.

We get this one line. I just wanted to scare

him. I didn't mean to. I didn't. And then all

of a sudden, the rest of the Rangers show up.

Fuck you, Mike. What? I'm gonna throw a big L

-ass sigh on this. And while yes, I completely

understand that Kyle Higgins wrote some damn

Power Rangers in his past, there was nary a damn

need to turn Radiant Black into Radiant Rangers.

side of this is not the only the Power Rangers

are not the only entity to have the color spectrum

of ROYGBIV used as signifiers. You have Steven

Universe, you have Care Bears, you have Voltron.

From days of long ago, from uncharted regions

of the universe comes a legend. Voltron came

way before Power Rangers ever did. Well, I know

their moon on the manga side of things. I mean

there are I Think it's just because this is honestly

endless. Yeah, and I think honestly it's just

because number one We know that Kyle wrote Power

Rangers number two Number two the suits do look

like Ranger suits. I mean, let's listen sports.

I'm done, bro Big ass robots they run around

in it could do like a fusion dance and make a

bigger even ass robot. I'm fucking done I'm gonna

throw it at Kyle and be like dude stop. You're

breaking go home Well, we kind of already got

a robot radiant red. She turned into this giant

robot suit in this issue She juggernaut it out.

Yeah. Yeah, I thought that was cool. I did again

We don't know the powers of any of the like we

know some of radiant blacks powers We don't know

much of Radiant Red other than what Nathan, not

Nathan, Marshall has said. I'm always going to

get that confused. Not really, but... And then

we got the yellow and the pink Ranger that showed

up to try and break up the flight because they

knew about to fuck shit up. And how the hell

do they know where they are? Right? Hold on.

I'm going to pull a mic on this one. This is

probably because of the Radiant Power, they can...

they can automatically know where each other

is. And just poof, I'm in Narnia? That's why

Marshall fucking just randomly showed up up Red's

ass, when she's out in the middle of fucking

wilderness. That was a downright demand. So I

mean, that one made sense to me because Marshall

basically was like, I'm not doing shit for you

unless you take me where I need to go in order

to get justice. That's all I can honestly say,

and I didn't think about that at all yesterday

because I was just like, fucking Power Rangers,

really? Right, but here's my thing like okay,

I'll buy it. I'll buy it. I'll buy the cart and

say that Yes, that's how they know is because

their their powers have gotten closer with the

radiant and maybe that's going to be the explanation

of it at some point in time but Nathan's had

the power for a really long time and the only

other one that he's met is red. That's the only

one he could sense. Yeah so How is it that now,

in this... hour of meat... Grandpa and fuckin'

it girl over here, you know, just randomly just

like boom tube up and all, all along. They just

happened. It's like, hey, hold on, stop that

shit, you guys. It's just fuckin' mulligan. They

just happened at the time that it is needed to

appear before the other two of their brethren

to be like, look, I don't know what the hell's

going on with y 'all and why y 'all are fightin',

but can we get back to what's the real big bad?

Mm -hmm. I mean... We already fought. Oh, shit.

And then Jason arrives. Yeah. No, not Jason.

What's his name? Tommy. Yeah, Tommy arrives.

The green ranger that looks like the white ranger.

Like faith into existence. Yeah, I was not...

Yeah, I don't know who this new guy is, but...

Like his blade. Yeah? I thought that was cool.

Thought that was cool up and calling his dragon

thing with the flute on the back side That that

would be Considering what Nathan did an issue

three MMP are you'll get soon Like I love it.

I think it's cool. I think it's awesome. Yes.

I agree with you guys. There are some issues

with the writing and we do want explanations.

I think the reason okay so as far as like Nathan

not being able to sense anybody except radiant

red like he didn't seem like he had the powers

too long but again as I've been saying this whole

podcast he was hesitant to even have them in

the first place. His like the radiant even said

You know, this is existence. This is this. This

is that. Oh, we're not bonding. And he already

even says it in this, like, oh, our our bonding

with you, Marshall, is much better than what

it was with Nathan Burnett, because it's going

much smoother, because, again, Marshall is accepting

of this. Marshall knows what he wants to do with

this. Marshall. Yeah. How did Marshall not know

that he so bonded with this he would have been

able to sense the other two presences Even in

the middle of this giant ass tussle was red Where

are they coming from? What is it? What does it

look does it look like it's another part of Chicago

to you guys or that's what i'm kind of wondering

where Where her portal like I know that we're

reading too much into this and please know that

you know It isn't it isn't a A slight it's just

these are the things that we pick up on because

the rest of it is so great Right, but it's one

of those things where it's like, okay Obviously

red and black have had There are their moments.

They've they've met each other. They've had tussles

Marshall knows who it is and then outright demands

radiant to take him to red But if that logic

of him being so bonded is the same for him What

was it like for Yellow and Pink? We don't know

because we're... Or is Marshall the only one

who's willing to bond and, you know, take on

this new existence as a powered being? Stop it.

I will not stop. He has to edit them. Why? He

has to edit out Rangers? No, no, no. I'm just

saying, like, yes, you're right. The illusion

of a Power Ranger -type team is there. And Marshall

even says, how many of these things are there?

Yeah. We don't know. They don't. I'm gonna call

Roy G. Biv. Well, and I'd be fine with that,

because I mean, as long as... Plus throw the

black and the white into, just like Green Lantern

did. I'd be fine with that. Like I said, this

isn't the only type of superhero style color

spectrum where they have that. And it would be

fine if that was what this was going to be. But

there's just, there's all this unknown and it

has to be a trusting relationship with the writer.

Well, here's my, okay. This, I mean, you know,

Lord Zed has just shown up and it ends. That's

the end of the issue. Okay. Here's the elephant

in the room. If a comic arc ends, the story is

supposed to conclude, not leave you hanging on

a giant cliffhanger so you can have a Dragon

Ball Z filler next issue. And then have your

10 -issue fight scene with, you know, Lord Freeza.

I mean, it really bothers me. I don't mind that

it ends on a cliffhanger. I just mind the fact

that this is supposed to be the end of the arc.

And then it breaks it up with, you know, oh,

here's some backstory on Rainy Red next issue.

I'll have to take a lunch break and have somebody

else fill in for me on this or something. I don't

know. I mean, it really irks me at the end of

it because I don't even know this new guy's name.

And then we got yellow and magenta over here.

Who the fuck are you? I mean, you're grandpa

and you're a little girl. All right, cool. And

then, you know. I think to make a long explanation

short, it's just that when it's supposed to be

an arc, like the ending of an arc, like I said,

there's supposed to be something that feels like

there's closure or something is concluding. And

there's not that. I mean, there's a lot of unanswered

questions and a ton of open doors. That, to me,

even though this is the end of the first arc,

you guys, which I need to, if I can get you the

PDFs, I will, or I can just send you to Comixology

so you can buy it yourself. If you go back, and

this is more to do with Kyle's style than anything

else, it has nothing to do with the fact that

you need to read Cowell in order to understand

Radiant. But the reason why I'm saying this is

because in Cowell, he did, I think, was it the

first five issues? or a full arc where I think

at the end of issue five, if I remember correctly,

they left you on some of a cliffhanger. And issue

six was an origin story kind of thing of one

of the characters. So he's kind of doing the

same thing here. It's a thread kind of thing,

which I don't know. We won't actually be getting

issue six until July 21st of this month. But

it's one of those things where if I'm right,

We get the cliffhanger here we get radiant red

origin kind of thing in issue 6 and then issue

7 picks up Where issue 5 left off kind of thing?

I'm not sure I don't know so it's more of a Kyle

signature then well Yeah, what was writing style?

I mean I read his nightwing stuff mm -hmm and

like the first first trade was setting up something

huge and It had a conclusion, but the next trade

picked right up with that story thread to keep

going with it And it The bad guy just showed

up we don't even have his damn name We've got

two more, you know, no colorful beings over here

that we don't even know their name and that that's

not how you end an arc I mean, you don't get

a grudge match with black and red But I think

it is with this specifically in the way that

his style is with his own creator own characters

like yes You're right The Nightwing stuff didn't

do this the reason why the Nightwing stuff didn't

do this most likely as far as I can tell just

My own personal perception here folks Kyle if

you hear this and I'm wrong you can correct me

sir Nightwing was work for hire Nightwing is

a DC character Nightwing is not something The

first couple of trades with Nightwing did in

that way. Well, that's what he's saying, though,

is that the reason that it ended that way was

because it wasn't a creator owned where you had

the freedom. Where you had the freedom to leave

it on a on a super cliffhanger. Like, that's

the thing with this with his style, as far as

I can tell. And who knows if the issue six might

start with who Radiant Red is and then it might

tie back into at the end of it. We don't know

yet because we don't have it. Right. But. I don't

know. I like this. Even though it says it's the

end of the first arc, I don't mind it being on

a cliffhanger because of the fact that it keeps

me wanting more. I want this immediately. I've

already, and I don't think we're doing an episode

on this, but I want it just because I want to

see how... Different they do it. I've already

pre -ordered the trade on comics ology for eight

dollars and 49 cents because I want to see How

the collected shows this five -issue story Versus

the individual versus the individual issues.

Don't get me wrong. I love the blackmail section

I love the backups and maybe who knows maybe

when the trade does release later When's the

trade releasing? It is releasing in August of

this year. Maybe in August we'll have a special

episode dedicated to volume one and maybe we'll

talk about the backup stories that we don't normally

talk about in the single issue stuff that we're

doing. I understand why you guys are, I understand

Ed, why your opinion and your feelings on it

are what they are and I'm almost right there

with you but I just want more. I don't know.

See, all right, here's my issue, though. I mean,

like, I got taken out of this issue so many times

because of plot threats, okay? That generally

doesn't happen to me when I'm reading something

like this. And, you know, like... Gotta go back

and reread issues and you know this then third.

I don't mind doing I love doing that kind of

shit I reread books all the time Mm -hmm, but

This had the opposite effect for me I mean it

literally felt so disjointed like three issues

were worth of stuff rammed into one issue Just

say it was the end of the arc. I think that was

mine, too Cuz I'm gonna step in for head here

cuz it has is a instead of grievances. And mine

don't really have anything to do with what is

being presented. Mine has everything to do with

this issue feeling disjointed. The pacing is

a lot different than what we've seen with issues

one through four. And that's because one through

four were focused on really learning and ingraining

the characters and the story. And they really

only focused on one particular plot thread. throughout

the whole of the issue. Like, yes, we have a

couple of times where we would have things that

would come in, but they always flowed so well

that it never felt like you were, like Ed said,

being taken out of the issue. Kyle was very smart

with his writing in one through four because

as a reader, he directed you not only where you

were supposed to go and what you were supposed

to focus on, but how you were supposed to feel

and what was important in that issue. Five for

me doesn't really achieve that same level, because

for me, it feels, like Ed said, it feels like

we should have had, if not three, at least two

different issues instead of all of this being

crammed together. It's a lot of information,

and it's hard as a reader to know where your

focus is supposed to be because you go from the

hospital or from the site to the hospital to

the fight. to these new things being introduced

and it just feels all so crammed together and

there's yeah rushed and it's not the same flow

that you had an issues one through four and maybe

that's because this is the end of the arc maybe

he was like okay on my list of things that have

to be presented in this issue for you to understand

what's coming a b and c need to happen these

cannot be removed but it doesn't feel like It's

almost like the Mandela effect. It's like you

you come into it But things are weird or they're

off or they're wonky and they don't seem to fit

like with the godmother That we've never seen

up until now now granted. This is only the fifth

issue But if she's such an important part Why

haven't we seen her? Why is she what did you

say shoehorn? she's into the issue and then With

the fight with black and red. Yes We get the

the huge reveal of who not necessarily who because

I don't think we still have a name for red either

but we get to see who red is and You know, we

have that reveal in the middle of this massive

beautiful Heart -wrenching fight where you get

to see Marshall just releasing all of this anguish

and anger and bitterness towards this person

who has just done Basically the unthinkable in

his mind. So it's gorgeous and then it just changes

and we get more information So it's hard to follow

along because there's so many Tempo changes throughout

the issue and I think that's my biggest issue

is the pacing It's so different than one through

four and like I said, I don't know if that's

because it's the end of the art it might be But

that was really my grievance was just the pacing

to me didn't feel the same. It didn't feel like

I was reading the same comic, honestly. Yeah,

right. So what would you rate? I felt the information.

I've needed to be broken up into two issues.

You know, if they want to do it a full arc, six

issues. The stuff that's in five could have been

broken up into five and six, and we could still

get our. you know, radiant red origin issue,

but that could be the start of the next arc where

they're introducing these characters, the yellow

and the pink and the red, and, you know, that

way you get to know all of them before we jump

back into the battle with Lord Zedd. Time crisis.

Yeah, you know. But I mean, and I agree with

you, Mike. I mean, I agree 100 % that had it

been done that way, where it didn't feel like

they were rushed by a deadline or by whatever

it was that made them so rushed that had it been

done that way, and I feel like they could have

expanded upon things a little bit more just to

make it feel that flow a little bit better, that

I would be in the same boat, because I want to

know more. I want to know who pink and yellow

are. I want to know how they found the powers.

I want to know who this guy is that Radiant's

been, you know, since day one, warning them about

who's coming and the fact that he comes out of

nowhere and is like, you have something that

doesn't belong to you. I don't want to know what

that's about. Yeah. So I mean, there are amazing

things in this issue, but the pacing is off.

So Ed, on a zero to five scale with half points,

what would you give issue five? I give it two

and a half because about half the issue was really

good and the rest of it just took my immersion

away. I mean, that's one of the biggest things

as a reader to me is can I get immersed in what

I'm reading? I sit down with Batman and You know

or something something the kin to that. I mean

Batman just like spider -man. Whatever. I don't

care. Give me something like that I'm immersed

to hell and gone but This this issue literally

Broke that immersion for me in so many ways that

I just I don't know. I just really upset me I

was kind of irritated after finishing the issue.

Kendra, what about you? I think I'm going to

be a little bit kinder, because like I said,

the art in this issue is absolutely on point.

The fact that you have a new artist and colorist,

for that matter, coming in and helping out and

you can't really, I mean, there's no discernible

difference in the art style. I mean, it's beautiful.

Oh my god, talent. It's like somebody went to

the Adventist School of Art and they all - They

were able to mimic - I mean, it's gorgeous. Yeah,

they were able to mimic that style perfectly.

There was no break in between that. The art,

like I said, art, 10 out of 10, okay? Give them

metal, give them a raise, whatever you want to

do. The artists are amazing. My only qualms with

this entire issue revolve around the writing.

But, I mean, and that's - That's something that

I expect always from Radiant Black is it's going

to have artwork that's going to make me sit back

and go, damn. Wish I could draw that good. That's

gorgeous. I mean, not even just with the cover

work. That's something that's always astounded

me with this series is that the covers match

the inside art and it's so nice. But with this

one, with it being so just all over the place

for me and feeling different, I think I'm going

to go with a four because I still enjoyed the

read. I still enjoyed the emotional plot. I still

enjoyed most of it. It was just those little

pieces that I was like, what are we doing? Yeah,

make good choices. I think for me, I'm going

to split the difference and go three and a half.

I enjoyed it. I want more. I wasn't left feeling

like we had to specifically close the arc because

To me, as I said earlier, I feel that when Kyle

is doing cliffhangers, or if he is doing a cliffhanger

for another company kind of thing, not specifically

his own creations, he does it well, and it just,

at the end of the, yes, I agree with you guys.

This is it, 48 pages or however many actual pages

are in this, 28 pages of story is a lot of story.

But outside of the one fairy godmother moment,

I just felt like it was Marshall figuring shit

out. It was Marshall doing what he needs to do

best. Hell, Nathan never bargained with the radiant.

Nathan never gave the radiant and ultimatum and

said okay sure I'll go do your cosmic shit But

you have to help me avenge my friend first kind

like that's why I feel like three and a half

four is Is still warranted and I understand why

yours at two and a half it is is where it is

because you felt as If you know things were too

disjointed. It's still a good comic folks people

should still read this Yeah, I'm not saying that

I'm just irritated with this issue. Yeah So my

reading that This month, actually in two weeks,

we are going to be talking about Radiant Black

number six. And over on Comixology, it says,

who's under the helmet of Radiant Red? Writer

Kyle Higgins, guest co -writer Cherish Chen,

and industry legend Darko LaFuente from Ultimate

Spider -Man Superman join forces for a story

that challenges everything you think you know

about the man, quote, behind the mask. So that's

what's coming in Issue 6. We also have Issue

7 and 8. Issue 7, picking up from the shocking

ending of Issue 5, Radiant Black's life just

got a whole lot more complicated. Pursued by

a new enemy and not sure who to trust, will our

hero escape with his life? Or is this the beginning

of the end for Radiant Black? Dun dun dun. Issue

6 will be out July 21st. Issue 7, August 18th,

I believe. Issue 8 will be out September 15th.

The battle for the Radiance tears through Chicago.

Can this unlikely new team stand against an enemy

who knows more about their powers than they do?

And even if they win, what happens next? I love

the mystery whole thing of, again, setting it

up and doing the point of, you think you know?

the shit's gonna happen and if I do I'm sorry

Kyle I'm done but uh okay they're gonna beat

Lord Zed this big bad with the awesome blade

and you know come face the powers and shit like

that somehow his radiant his powers connected

to the radiant powers and it's gonna get booted

from him and they're gonna give it to Nathan

to bring him back hmm does happen I quit Yeah,

that'd be interesting And I'm also gonna call

that he's gonna be a bad guy for at least three

issues because he doesn't remember who he is

because of his brain death and Then it's gonna

come back and then join the rest of the Rangers

and please their goodness. Don't let it be that

predictable Yeah, if that happens then My old

jaded ass is just going to walk away from Radiant

Black. We really don't need a Jason Todd Guy

Gardner team -up. Thank you very much. All right.

Nathan would be all weird and different and shit.

Maybe that would be the whole purpose because

that was one through four. We got to meet and

learn and relate to Nathan. So of course we're

going to be able to spot the differences. How

cool would that be? I feel like that's not right.

Nathan wouldn't do that. Ignite says the godmother.

Stop it. I'm sorry. Seriously, we need a whole

issue on her. I need to know where she's been.

Her name is godmother shoehorn. Are you a good

witch or a bad witch? Flora, Fauna, or Merriweather?

Or Maleficent, maybe she's evil. Oh, that would

be wicked! That's a whole different thing, though.

Yeah, yeah, that's over in Oz. Alright, as I

said earlier, coming up next time, well later

this month we've got Radiant Black number six,

but coming up next time, I very rarely do kickstarters

or any of that kind of stuff. I don't have the

money to do them, but sometimes I can. I think

I've done, I want to say seven kickstarters.

And one of them I did was with my buddy Ryan

Drost. You people will have known him from the

Star Joe's podcast. And he's been on here several

times on the pullback promoting his creator own

comic called Stealth Hammer. So somebody, I don't

know who, somebody's going to join me in an issue.

Jesus, I'm doing it too. In episode 419 .5, as

we talk about Ryan Drost's stealth hammer, after

that, we've got Radiant Black number six with

these lovely hail people. And then to end off

July, we've got Transformers Beast Wars number

six, the final story arc in Savage Landing from

IDW Publishing. So that's what's coming up. Here

inside the pull bag, Ed, where can the people

find you online? You can find me on YouTube at

SithRulesEd. A whole lot of Call of Duty content

on my YouTube page. I know that Mike hasn't subscribed

yet. Yes, I have. I just don't watch the videos.

Sorry. Well, they need to be watched so I can

get famous and make money on playing video games.

Oh, please. That girl noise. Being YouTube famous

is... Out is about as Johnny test is anyway.

Hey, I'd like to make sixty seventy thousand

dollars a year playing video games Wouldn't we

all I'd like to make sixty sixty seventy thousand

dollars a year doing all these podcasts I do

but sadly that's not it. We need to work together

here. Uh -huh Cross -promotion man. Let's do

it Get Mike on some Call of Duty with me. I don't

have a podcast in the middle war zone match I

don't even have a gaming system and my computer

is so old. I don't even think I can upgrade to

Windows 11. You can run some Warzone on there.

What about Twitter, Instagram, any of that stuff?

Yeah, I got Twitter at DevourallDC, Instagram

at SithRulesEd again, and of course on Facebook.

Just look for the guy that looks like the Batman

who laughs That's one creepy person you married

Kendra, where can the people find you online?

Not as bad as me I Can be found everywhere it's

it's really easier to just Google I Can be found

doing reviews doing short flash flash horror

fiction. I can be found doing podcasts Just Google

Kendra Hale reviews, Kendra Hale writings. I

mean, it's just, I'm everywhere. Twitter, at

Devour All Words, and at Devour All Comics. If

you look for me, you'll find me. If you Google,

it will happen. Yes, she said Google, folks,

not Oogle. All right, make your great escape
