About this Episode

TFG1Mike and JT from Saskatoon conclude their coverage of IDW's Back to the Future ongoing series with the fifth and final volume, Time Served. This arc wraps up the story of Uncle Joey, a throwaway character from the original films who becomes central to the narrative, exploring themes of fixed points in time and unintended consequences. The episode covers the creative team's work—including Bob Gale and John Barber—the art by Marcelo Ferrera, and how the series brought closure to the 25-issue run while leaving room for future stories.

My calculations are correct. When this baby hits

88 miles per hour, you're gonna see some serious

shit. Hi, this is John Barber from IDW Publishing.

You are listening to The Pull Bag. You've just

jumped inside The Pull Bag. Join TFG1Mike and

the rest of the comic reading crew here at the

GCRN as they make their great escape into comics.

From DC, Marvel, IDW, Boom Studios, Xenoscope,

and more, we have everything you want to read

right here. Transformers comics? Yeah, we cover

that. He -Man? Yeah, sure. DC superheroes like

Batman, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Batman Beyond?

Yup, we have those too. How about TMNT from IDW

and I Hate Fairyland from Image Comics? Yeah,

we have all that here. Plus, so much more. It's

all inside the pull bag here on the Geekcast

Radio Network. So without any further ado, it's

time to talk about the comics we are reading

right now here inside the pull bag. Hello and

welcome to the pull bag. This is episode 388

and we're all going 88 miles per hour, folks.

You're gonna hear some serious shit in this podcast.

That's right, it is Back to the Future with IDW

Publishing. I am of course TF2 and Mike. Joining

me is Kevin O - Oh wait, no, no, no, no. This

is a different timeline. Optimus Solo had joined

me for all of the other four trades of this,

and my co -host, who is here now, joined me for

Biff to the Future because, you know, he's a

butt -head. Uh, we have JT from Saskatoon. Hello,

sir. Yes, Biff is a butt -head. Thank you for

clarifying that. No, I'm not. I don't butt heads.

That hurts. Depends on who's butt you're missing.

Anyway, comic books. Yes, comic books. We're

here. And I assume you've read all of these already,

all of the ones leading up to this, the other

trades. I'm wounded that you think that I haven't

read all of the Back to the Future comics, Mike.

Well, I don't know. Some people, you know, some

people I tell them that it's the Back to the

Future comic. And they're like, really? I am

hurt, dismayed, and appalled. You would doubt

me like that. You can only be one. You can only

be shocked or dismayed. Pick one. I was hurt,

dismayed, and appalled. I can multitask. Well,

I can't. So anyway, yes, back to the future.

uh... volume five this is time served this is

the swan song for the main ongoing of idw's back

to the future i was hoping there would be more

of this series because i really dug it and i

really don't what they were doing citizen brown

the what the ones that uh... not stand -alone

trade but kind of stand -alone series uh... obviously

a bit future and coming up in a uh... couple

weeks will have uh... j t and i talking about

the actual final thing that they did, which was,

uh, tails from the time train. So there's that.

I, I hated like reading the trade and, you know,

I have the individual, sorry. That's my phone

that I left on my desk. Uh, the, the end of the

trades is this is the conclusion of the first

volume of the back to the future title. As far

as they know IDW still maintains the license.

So they may or may not have. Yeah. Like they

may or may not have future plans to do another

run. It's just, I hate it when they say first

volume, because it kind of didn't know. It's

like, don't worry, we'll be back soon. And this

comic came out three, almost three and a half

years ago. Well, this actual book probably was

three and a half years ago. The series started

in 2015. Because I remember wherever I made a

big deal about it in 2015. I'm like, oh my god,

it's 2015 We're all supposed to be wearing, you

know lace -up hot Nikes and power jackets and

yeah, and I misspoke I meant to say the first

issue of this storyline because I'm looking at

the the back to the future the futurepedia article

was Publication date was August 9th 2017. Yep

Yeah, so So with hard just briefly with hard

time with the previous trade with the previous

issues What was your initial impressions on that

and then we'll transition into what's going on

here in time, sir? well Pardon me one of the

things that I had completely forgotten about

in the back -to -future Canon was the the whole

thing with uncle Joey mm -hmm and The fact that

they set it up at in that where you know Marty

goes back to find out what really happened and

You know leading into the you know, the trade

we're talking about today. I was like, oh wow.

I actually forgot about that. I remember more

About like how sheriff strip sheriff Strickland's

great -grandson becomes the principal You know

in the timeline or how? Thomas F. Wilson just

managed to give each version of Biff like his

own little eccentricities. I completely forgot

that Marty had an Uncle Joey who was in jail.

I think this is genius of them. It was only ever

a through line through the movies. It was only

ever a throwaway thing. Uncle jailbird Joey,

I guess he's not getting out and here's a cake,

you know I mean it was only ever the slightest

of jokes and you know 30 40 so odd years later

now, you know We have Bob get cuz Bob Gale is

on this as well as John Barber Just to get the

creative out of the way. So what's it to you?

Yeah, so the creative on this would be Barber

waltz Walt Tom waltz is the editor John Barber,

Bob Gale. Letters done by Sean Lee and Tom B.

Long. Series edits done by Chase Maritz. I can

barely read that. Maratz? Yeah, there you go.

Obviously edited by Tom Waltz and other people,

but you know, you've got four parts here to the

time served story. And what I love about the

Back to the Future IDW stuff is every trade.

basically has Bob Gale with a letter at the beginning

of it telling you behind -the -scenes stuff,

how they did the story, thanking people, that

kind of thing. I love that they did that. I think

that's absolutely amazing. And again, like I

said, what I love is they took a character that

was basically just a one -note, one -off mention

in the movies. And I don't remember if he was

mentioned in the animated series, because it

was so short -lived in the animated series where

it was more focused on Marty and Doc than anything

else. But they took this character. I don't think

they ever mentioned him in the show. They took

this character. They took this one timeline thread

of a character and made him into something that

is really, really cool. Like he was always looking

out for Marty. He was always, you know, he didn't

want, you know, he didn't want the life of crime.

And he never really actually did any crime in

the first place. As we'll get into yeah, I mean

the a Character that like he says seemed like

a throwoff mention because he's don't really

only mentioned in the first movie We really only

see him in the first movie as you know a baby

in 1955 right and then it becomes like a mix

of the events of He becomes like this kind of

Fixed point in time almost to borrow a term from

the booster gold comic series that he is turns

out to be kind of central in very Timing why

me wibbly wobbly kind of ways to the the narrative

and like keeping everything on the same track

I mean, yeah, he's the linchpin essentially.

Yeah. Well, it's it's a weird chronal linchpin

in events cuz You know, Marty, and really it's

none of this would be affected so much if Marty,

you know, could keep his big Canadian schnoz

out of it. Yes, that's because Marty McFly's

Canadian folks deal with it. Anyway, it becomes

this huge thing. Like, you know, Marty goes back

in time with Dr. Irving who... Keep in my head.

I kept calling him. Dr. Octavius because the

way He's drawn by let me Marcelo Ferreira. Mm

-hmm. He looks like a He I don't know maybe if

I ever met him I'd ask him it looks like he might

have been inspired by Otto Octavius like Doc

Ock Because he just, you know, he's chunky. He's

got those glasses. He's got that highfalutin

speech. He's like, I appear to have interceded

at an incorrect junction in the time stream again.

And it's like, there's a reason why your time

machine didn't work, buddy. Yeah, exactly. You

think too damn much. And what I love about Professor

Irving is that first of all, he's the professor.

He's not another doc. He's not, you know, so

it's professor kind of thing. And he started

out as a villain, even though they turned it

around for him kind of thing. I mean, when you

go to the future and we met future Irving, like

Darth Irving. as i kind of call him he i get

that like he's a villain there when we first

meet him he's just that very this is what doc

could have become if he had even more tunnel

vision than he already has but doc is at least

cognizant enough to like he'll have that moment

of clarity was like whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa

You know and he'll pull himself back from the

edge Irving is like a lemming and he just dove

head -first over the cliff Mm -hmm. I mean and

just the fact that I mean, it's unintentional

plagiarism, but how his time machine had like

that box of gizmo strapped to the hood of the

car and it looked like when they when doc 1955

doc rejiggered the DeLorean to send Marty back

to 1885 Mm -hmm, you know such like that It he

wasn't a bad character and he does make like

oh, I think he's kind of in a welcome addition

to the series Overall it would have been you

know If the series had continued and hopefully

it will continue in future that he comes back

as a supporting character You know, he could

be the Robbie Robertson to Doc's J Jonah. Mm

-hmm that sort of thing but yeah, I mean the

With the first issue where Marty's already from

hard time, you know Marty's been caught by the

gang After George almost rolls his VW bug over

Irving And he just gets out and and this is just

I wish the world was more like this like Nowadays

if you almost run over somebody You get out and

you're ready to throw a fist and launch a lawsuit

George gets a jeez. Are you okay? I almost read

you we should really look where you're going.

Mm -hmm, you know And I love the little I Almost

like my vision of Biff is still that like, you

know sidebirds blonde hair green and white tracksuit

I forgot kind of forgot about the auto detailing

thing because you know, I haven't watched back

to the future for a minute But I love how George

is, he's getting bad, you know, stay safe. You

never know what, of course it's Biff because

he sees the auto detailing flyer on the fence.

Yep. Of course it's, it always comes back to

Biff. Um, yeah, either, you know, Biff is Donald

Trump or he's an auto detailer named Donald Trump.

Anyway, um, you know, um, we're never going to

let that go folks. Well, it's the movie's fault,

they... Anyway. The one thing I like about Forever's

Art in here is unlike the artists that we originally

had on the title, where they made efforts to

make Marty and Doc and Biff look like Michael

J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Thomas F. Wilson,

he doesn't... Not the word lollygate. He doesn't

hang The story on the art the way some artists

do it because they make that oh they have to

look like the actors You know, so they yeah,

you recognize it as Biff as Marty as doc You

know, but it leans more into there like the writing

takes care of the recognition more than the art

does Yeah, but the art still stands out. It's

still to the point of, you know, like some of

the artists that have been on the series have

done the likeness thing and, oh, that's, that's

very cool. I couldn't think of the word likeness.

You know, good. Sorry, you go. So, you know,

some of them have done the likeness thing and

that kind of thing. But by the time we get here,

it's like the artist has found like, as I think

Marcelo did the last trade too, I could be wrong.

I'm not looking at the last trades info. But

I think he did Hard Time as well. And because

Hard Time and Time Served are essentially part

one, part two of the story to kind of, for Joey

and that kind of thing. And with the art, for

me, the characters that I don't know, like, I

mean, I know Marcus just from reading this, but

Marcus Irving is a new character. He stands out

more to me. than Marty and Doc do. I had to do

a couple of double takes while reading this to

make sure I was like, is that Marty or is that

one of the other guys that's around there kind

of thing? Yeah. But Mark is - Does it forget?

Go ahead. I was gonna say I forget which one

of the gang, I think it was the dude in the cowboy

hat was Billy Zane in the movies? Mm -hmm. Or

was it 3D? And Ferrer is like on that scene where

Biff's like demanding to know who Marty is and

he's like - It doesn't look like Michael J. Fox,

but it is Michael J. Fox. And that matters. Like,

I think you have me confused with anybody else.

And I got to go. I want to like just that language

and that art like that. That is Marty. You know,

it gets it conveys that. Yeah, absolutely. As

we take the story along. Love that they go into

like I said Joe Joey and who he is and how his

personality is and You know they and how it's

all tied back to Doc Brown and the brown fortune

and this that and the other thing and it's a

Kind of a mystery mashup thing It's really weird

for me to see Doc with his mom though. That's

Doc and Doc's mom that that was a little strange

but Yeah, it works Yeah That was one of my favorite

bits about the Biff's gang and this whole thing

where he they he keeps calling her Dorian Ellsworth

mm -hmm and Just again, that's something go to

the writing with Gail and barber's work on this

is like it just this is pure Biff like he you

know getting the words mixed up but his brain

is misfiring all the wrong neurons that he can't

even begin to understand that he's getting it

wrong he's just hardwired to know that well I

said it therefore it's always right and you know

they they go back to like when they're going

to commit the crime and Marty is like well this

doesn't sound like what's the brown fortune?

And everyone turns and everyone's heard that

story. And, you know, referencing everyone believes

that Doc burned the house down for the insurance

money. And, you know, we all know, like, you

don't know what really happened. We barely know

what happened. Right. But the whole idea of like,

you know, you tell a story over and over again,

and eventually everyone believes it as fact.

Yeah. And then aka Dorian Brown, aka Dorian Ellsworth.

And I heard it was in a cigar box and now the

widow Brown in all her boxes, cigar and otherwise,

are back in Hill Valley. And then Marty's like,

uh, he tries to correct him. It's like, dude,

trying to correct the Bif Tan and thought train

is like trying to split a tsunami with a toothpick.

It just isn't going to happen. no that's not

um yeah although i'm pretty sure when he breaks

up is like there's 85 000 that they're looking

for that's 12 grand a piece i'm pretty sure biff

knows math because that way he that smile tells

me he knows he's screwing everyone else over

oh of course he does he knew that i mean i still

think he's stupid for saying it that way but

again that goes into his character and and the

way that he is. What I do like about this arc

is that we have both of the different versions

of Biff. We have Biff who's the hothead bully

guy, and then we have Biff who's the timid auto

-detailer kind of thing, and I think that's really,

really cool that they worked both parts of Biff's

personality into the timeline of the story and

how it all plays out. I love that, as I already

said, how You know Joey basically is gonna take

the fall for people even though he didn't He

didn't actually do anything and we find out that

how he didn't actually do it and I love in the

art that they go when they do the flashback I'm

way ahead now. I think I'm in the last part of

the trade at this point And the flashback is

all kind of, it's not sepia tone, but it's like

white and yellow, orange, brown backgrounds and

that kind of thing. It's completely different

from the current timeline art because it is a

flashback. It's still so readable and so interesting

to see and showing you how Doc remembers what's

going on and things that are happening. I just

absolutely think that's great. Yeah. Well, I

love when you see Doc with this exceptional 1970s

porn handlebar mustache. Yes. You know, just

going like that. And it's like, it's not even,

it's not Christopher Lloyd at this point. It's

Sam Elliott. Yeah. Yeah. You know, like, cause

he comes off, like it's still Doc and he's the

scatterbrain scientist. He's got this weird upside

down lamp thing that Causes people to like float

in air Which we find out later is the main part

a component of the main lift drive of the time

train You know and when we get back to 1985 and

we see Joey and like, you know He spent time

in prison working because now he's like super

buff and he's got the slick back here And I just

love how they draw Biff as you know, he's got

that pawn. She's got that plus -sized What do

you call him? flask that he's sipping out of

because they discover where the money is or where

they think the money is because it's kind of

can it's back to the future with a hype make

made a heist movie, but using back to the future

logic. Yeah, absolutely. It's basically people

are gonna kill me for this. It's basically Fast

Five meets Avengers Endgame. I'm only giving

you Fast Five on that one. Well, Avengers Endgame

because the time, because again, time travel

and the time stones and hell, they even make

fun of Back to the Future in that movie. Now

they call Back to the Future bullshit and that

is like the one negative point I give that movie.

It's like, you do not talk shit about the holy

trilogy, sir. That's right, but not like so like

Marty goes with Biff and is gone with Biff and

Joey and the gang to Rob Ma Brown and we got

that wonderful little side story with Professor

Irving who falls in with a bunch of dirty hippies

and they go to the the like the junkyard because

he thinks that you could kind of see a Silver

car through the fence. So like he climbs over

the fence and then the hippies knocked down the

fence the damn the man When Irving's about caught

by security and then he finds it's just like

a Corvette or something that was there that was

repossessed He's like, oh where the hell is it

now? Because they lost them DeLorean it Oh like

the the first part of the story they opened like

where the hell's the car? Where'd you park the

car? Somebody stole the car and I love the explanation

for that though. Oh, yeah when they Meet up with

Doc again. He's like, Doc, you shaved that excellent

mustache. Oh, wait, your future doc, aren't you?

He's like, yes. Yes. And what have you two been

doing? You know, there's very, the disapproving

tone in Doc's voice. Like I just hear Christopher

Lloyd, man. Absolutely. You know, it's Not like

everything like don't hear Christopher Lloyd's

voice. It's just in reading that in my head All

of a sudden the volume clicked on and I heard

Christopher Lloyd saying those words I love the

fact that they have like the weak ass toy walkie

talkies That actually work, you know from back

when even we were young. Yeah, you know cuz hey,

let's give our kids live electronics What's the

worst that could happen? But when they meet future

doc again, he explains that he created his well

he created brown star He he's he built an auto

recall function into the time machine And he's

like well it came back without either of you

and I knew something was going wrong exactly

And about the same time I know and you can just

hear that beleaguered From doc Brown not again.

Mm -hmm Within and I find that it's a weird juxtaposition

with 1970s doc with this flowing mane of hair

and this epic mustache chasing Joey and Marty

who have managed to break into the brown home

and loot the place of everything that they think

is worth it including this one painting and Then

he's chasing him with a broom and Joey gets caught

by the Lyft Drive, which is only dealt with by

talk tripping over the power cord of course and

It's it's a wonderful little bit of nostalgia

that remembering like you what we have for plug

like AC plugs now and how they used to be like

back in the 70s and early 80s that you know the

part you plug in doesn't necessarily have the

area around the prongs covered you see that like

you see the inner workings of the plug and It's

attentions to detail like that that I love in

comic books But yeah, Joey Joey gets busted by

the cops After I love Marty picks up the drive

and he's running with it and you almost hear

the Benny Hill music playing Chases after him

and they get outside and You know Marty tosses

the drive back to Doc. He catches it. They get

out in the roof. They run away But when the cops

show up and everyone gets pulled everyone bails

except Joey and we see that Joey is a stand -up

guy Yep, like and I only didn't mention folks

that in the earlier part of the story just like

I know you I know I know you and then Marty's

like yeah, I'm Kevin Klein Kevin Clyde And you

just see Biff is like, your dad ruined my life.

He made Lorraine fall in love with that nerd

McFly. Yeah, it couldn't possibly have anything

to do with the attempted rape there, you dunce.

Yeah. And you get that. And then when Joey's

like, I almost forgot, but I love that. No, they'll

throw the book at you. And then Professor is

like, drive. Sure man, where to? Anywhere! Yeah,

I... And the turtle's party wagon peels out.

See, I didn't see the turtle van is what it's

actually called. I don't care what the toys call

it, that's stupid. I didn't see... I always called

it the party wagon. No, I've always called it

the turtle van, but anyway. I didn't see the

turtle van. All the hippies and everything else.

I just kept seeing... the gang without Scooby

being there. That's all I saw. I've been rewatching

the 2012 Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles series, and

I'm just about the point where the Krang invade

New York, and April's dad gives them the keys

to the party wagon, and that's how they escape

NYC. But yeah, Joey gets arrested. And George

shows up to try and it's like, that's my brother

-in -law. And technically he didn't steal anything

because the cigar box is empty. But Doc's is

like, he still broke into my home. He assaulted

my mother. And yeah, Joey goes to jail. Like

this is like I said earlier, this is one of those

fixed points in the time stream. You can't. This

is one of those unintended consequences like.

God, I can't remember what, uh, it's like Homer

and the toaster from that one tree house of horror

special. Yes. What did my dad say? If you go

back in time, don't touch anything. You know,

the smallest changes have the biggest impact.

So this has to happen. Right. And, you know,

so Joey goes to jail and They go back to 1985

finally cuz basically Biff's on him and he's

like you've got till noon tomorrow to get me

the loot or I'm coming for you You know getting

a little bit of me, you know Buford You know

coming out there So they they get back to the

1985 can they realize the Irving has a piece

of the pot the top half of this painting which

Oh god, what's Doc's wife's name? Clara Clara

it was a painting of Clara they ripped like the

top half off and they realized that there's a

Map painted on the back of it and that's when

they run into 85 doc and I just love the smug

where you see doc pull out his remote for the

DeLorean like the recall and I again, it's not

a likeness, or at least in my estimation, a very

good likeness not to knock for his art. But he

looks like he's got Bruce Campbell chin, like

a chin that could kill. You could carve mountains

with that thing. And he's just but you see the

smugness on his face is like I could perfectly

imagine, you know, Christopher Lloyd having this

that smug smile on his face like Like the smiley

had well, what the hell? from the first movie

And describes how he did and he came back and

they go back to 1985 they discover the remains

of the You know the map on the back of Claire's

foot because apparently and I have to go back

and look at the first movie again Because Marty

says this has always been hanging in our house

Because apparently George got a hold of this

painting and it's just been sitting in the living

room Forever, so I'd like to go back and see

if that's actually in the movie or it's just

something that they That Gail and Barbara came

up with for this storyline. Yeah but yeah, they

get busted by Biff and Joey and we swing back

to see Joey's, you know arraignment basically

in 1970 and how He ain't no rat and it goes back

to like you're saying how Joey wanted to be Because

he had so much family. He wanted to be special

in a way, and that's why he fell in with Biff

and the gang. Right, yep. And I love the cops

references, like you're, this is your future,

kid, you're throwing everything away for what?

Some James Cagney principle? And Cagney never

actually said that. You dirty rat. Yeah, you

dirty rat, you killed my brother. Oh, not Cagney.

Yeah, God, I love it Ninja Turtles and back to

the future net neither of those ever fails to

bring a smile to my face Unless it's the next

mutation, but we don't talk about that show Well,

you know, there's a better female turtle now

anyway, um Dude So we have at some point down

the line. I don't know when I have to schedule

I have to change whatever Mm -hmm we have transformers

back to the future we need turtles back to the

future come on idw it stands to reason because

they've done ninja turtles ghostbusters ninja

turtles batman they've done ghostbusters and

transformers back to the future transformers

hell i would love to actually you know as much

as i would love to see ninja turtles and back

to the future and that would be the most wholesome

and entertaining story Would love to see GI Joe

meet ninja trolls. I want to see the turtles

fight short storm shadow and snake eyes. I Want

to see an all -out ninja brawl? That's funny

Yeah, that'd be fun. Oh, yeah, so we get back

to 1986 and You know Biff is Trying to follow

Joey And and Joey's just like and and just that

seed of Joey manhandling like gets him in that

arm bar And I was like I don't hate Thomas F

Wilson that I have seen interviews with that

man He was one of my favorite parts of was it

season three or four of legends of tomorrow where

he played Nate Haywood's dad. Yeah, it's season

three and four I think Yeah, and I even love

like everything about even that thing where he

he hands out the cart. Yes, I am Biff tatted

No, I will not say hey butt head because you

know is him and there's a lot of parallels between

him and Leonard Nimoy how there was a few years

where Leonard Nimoy hated being Spock Yeah, just

as he Wilson hated being Biff and he came to

acceptance like look I'm proud to be a part of

it. I'm not gonna do the line but so Biff and

Joey is and that was actually a flashback because

we see that's why they busted Irving and Marty

in the living room and they go off to the hills

of Hill Valley appropriate and dig up this box

and then all of a sudden again I don't wish violence

on Thomas F Wilson I wish violence on Biff Tatted

and Joey just absolutely buries that punch in

his gut. I was like, Oh, good. Yeah. And a bit

like literally can't process we were on the same

side. And he's like, you know, I this is that

Brad is my nephew, you ruined my life, blah,

blah, blah. Right. And it's kind of a call like

he explains why he did what he did. And he is

really sorry. that he let everyone down, especially

Lorraine and Marty. And then Irving and Marty

go over the cliff. And I honestly, the first

time I read this, just for a second, I was like,

oh shit, oh wait, they're referencing back to

the future too, aren't they? Because you find

out that Doc caught them. And what do you think

of Biff's comeuppance here? i don't know where

it is come up it's yes um... i think that i'm

trying to think here it's it's so weird with

the like how they've taken the characters from

the film trilogy and put them in the comics and

told stories with them and i love the stories

that they're telling and whatever else Every

time I think about Biff and the McFlies, or Biff

and the Browns, or whatever, it's always... It's

kinda like, um... Who's the bad guy? Like, is

Daniel the bad guy? Or is Johnny the bad guy?

No, the bad guy is Kreese. The problem is, Biff

is both versions of Kreese at this, but like,

there is no... There's no confusion as to who

the bad guy is it's better. Yeah, there's no

there's no one else to blame Well, I Mean Biff's

the bad guy, but he's not the thing is Biff's

the bad guy, but he's and he's the main antagonist

but he's not the cause of the the timey wimey

wibbly wobbly shenanigans like that's true Doc

and Marty ultimately but They don't do it with

nefarious purposes like how old Biff went to

Went back to 1955 and set up, you know the bets

and done the sports almanac and all that. Yeah.

Yeah the Trump Trump 85 like that and Then that

but he he's just as Joey calls him there. There's

a this is what you get you selfish stupid greedy

coward and that is Biff from 1955 to 85 to 2015

is he never changes like I said before his brain

is I Wouldn't be surprised if his grandmother

dropped him on his head a few times. It might

explain things like He just doesn't get it. This

isn't you know, you're you're an asshole. This

is what happens to assholes and I love when they

finally Explain what happened with the money

with Doc? The whole reason why he did it and

I was like, you know, his mother is literally

She'd sooner stuff the money into a mattress

then put it in the safe and I love that she never

trusted safes But that's another story. That's

another story. Yeah, and I'd almost interested

to know it's like what do you not trust about

safes? Mrs. Brown and then you know, she's getting

courted by this new guy and Doc was like, oh

he's after her money And so he stole it and hit

it. And then he found out that he's Rockefeller

rich. So he decided, well, the money's already

in my thing. And that's what he used to use as

a startup capital for developing the flux capacitor.

And I love when you see that scene where he's

sitting on top of the devices, you know, welding,

you know, right between his nethers. the part

that most men they're thinking with and and how

they have the three portions of it set up, you

know to look like the why of Yeah, you know,

so again goes back to the design aesthetic and

then we see what happens to Biff where he's finally

let down When doc turns it off and I don't know

if that's prolonged exposure to the stuff or

it happened when doc cut the power but now we

have a Biff cannon doing principal Strickland

cosplay because he's been all his clothes and

hair have been burnt off Well, I mean if you're

gonna be electrocuted that long by anything flux

capacity or not Your clothes are not gonna survive

You know and hey at least you know He might have

been left in the road naked or in the woods naked

or whatever But at least there's no manure not

this time So, you know, he can be thankful for

that. I know that was kind of a pretty wet that

he landed there. So true. I don't know. And we

all know that, like, you can't lead a horse to

water, but you can lead a tannin to, you know,

horse manure. They do mention bears and I'm willing

to bet dollars to donuts that Biff tripped over

a branch and went face first into a pile of horse

or bear hockey. You know and I and I love that

it's kind of a Walking in the sunset moment as

they're walking into the headlights of the DeLorean

You know the the triumphant heroes everyone's

you know, we got figured out, you know, Joey

is apologized to Doc and Doc, you know being

the wise and sage that he is he's like It's all

good Mm -hmm, but you get back and you see The

first time we've seen Lorraine's parents for

the first time since 1985. Yep. And again, I

have to go back and watch the first film, but

I would hope they put some effort into the likeness,

but. You know, not everything has changed for

the better in this future timeline. Marty's older

sister is still a bitch. Yeah. You know, and

the brother. Doesn't care Looking Kind of like

I think he's drawing it. He looks kind of like

judge Reinhold in my opinion And I never really

noticed except earlier in the art that he Joey's

got some prison tats like he has that spiderweb

on the one elbow But this is honestly one of

my favorite moments where he reconciles with

his parents Like just kind of bringing that circle

close to a close. Yep, absolutely Now I I love

how you know doc, you know, he takes the drive

he's like, you know a law of unintended consequences

You know, he forgot where he had buried the lift

drive actually, so he takes that he goes back

to 1885 to get Claire and the boys Dr. Irving's

Gone off because he's got a date. Yep. Again,

I'd have to go back and read You know, yeah,

it was that storyline because that's where they

set it up. I believe yeah It was in citizen Brown

kind of thing where when they eventually turned

him to good when he wasn't evil anymore Kind

of wasn't citizen Brown the one the series based

on the telltale game. I think so. Yeah Yeah,

I know cuz Irving showed up in the main series

here. Yeah He's got his happy ending Marty and

Jennifer, you know literally drive off into the

sunset And then doc goes back and eat complete.

I love the fact that they draw it like doc clearly

As much as he preaches about the laws of time

traveling or the ethics of time travel You've

launched this train out of the middle of 1885

Hill Valley as if people aren't gonna turn this

into the Roswell goddamn New Mexico of California

Yeah But you know he takes off into the next

series now I'm gonna ask you do you think that

as Never mind these that this last page with

doc taking off how they ended the You know 1986

with Marty and Jennifer driving off Do you think

that is? How do you feel is that being the ending

for this series? Think it's good. I think it's

the way it should be I think it's heading them

to the where where they should be in 2015 and

and You know, hopefully doc can just erase 2020.

I don't know if the time machine can do that.

I don't think it can It's not to try we'll end

up with like, you know Bif tan in 2020 or something.

You know what honestly Bif tan in 2020 is much

better than what we currently have Sort of, kind

of not really. Having read this entire series

and loving everything, I love that they brought

this story together. They used this seemingly

throwaway character from the first movie like

this. Who is Marty McFly's storyline? Marty questioning

his reality and having this existential crisis.

Think narratively speaking because you know,

I didn't write the comic and they put that storyline

where it was I think that would have made Overall

a more fitting ending for this volume of the

title this run But again, you know, I think just

kind of conceptually speaking You know because

of again all the wibbly wobbly timey wimey I

like the idea of Marty, you know, questioning

his existence like this after fundamentally changing

the time stream in such a way. So I just think

it would have ended or not ended. But I think

just narratively speaking, it works better as

an ending. See, I, I don't know, I kind of tend

to disagree because I feel that Well, okay volume

four and five is let's face it at the heart of

it. It's Joey Baines a story It's it's them allowing

themselves to give us the Joey Baines thing Okay,

but at the end of this It's kind of like at the

end of the first film where Marty has Jennifer

Doc is gonna go off and do whatever Doc does

and he'll always be checking in kind of thing,

so it leaves it open to whatever. And as I said

at the beginning of this podcast, we do have,

coming up in episode 390 in a couple of weeks,

we have Back to the Future Tales from the Time

Train, which I have not read at all. I had not

read. Back when, back in episode 356, when Optimus

Solo and I had done Hard Time, we were initially

gonna do this one as well, to finish off the

main ongoing. At that time, I don't think Tales

from the Time Train was even a thing yet. So,

I was not sure how we were eventually gonna get

back to, back to the future, but here we are,

and I find myself being okay with the way it

ended here. I think you're right. That, you know,

if you wanted to just focus on Marty and how

he is and how his character is with the time

travel and everything else. Yeah, sure. It could

have ended with, uh, who is Marty McFly, but

the fact that, you know, millions of fans around

the world want to know the Joey Bain story news

at 11. Yeah. No, I'm just saying, like I said,

narratively speaking, but yeah, it's like the

first one and. Doc taking off with Clara and

the boys is this their version of, you know,

the train, the ending of Back to the Future 3,

like the story is not over. Right. Clearly. You

know, it's I'm not going to lie. I first time

I ever saw Back to the Future 3, I teared up

watching that be like seeing the DeLorean get

demolished and then Doc taking off against like

I want more because like that's my childhood.

And I Honestly, I'm probably gonna go back and

rewatch the trilogy now Yeah, you know when I

have not like right as soon as we're done recording

But at some point this week because let's face

it the world sucks right now. Mm -hmm Yeah But

yeah, I mean I Think as a whole for a comic series

that had 25 issues. That's a good run Not a lot

of comic series get 25 issues let alone, you

know 50 100 whatever But it's one of those things

where I think between the five volumes of The

Main Ongoing, between Citizen Brown, between

Biff to the Future, and between what we'll have

coming up with Tales from the Time Train, I think

they've done everything they possibly could have

done within the confines of the story that they

wanted to tell or the confines of the time travel

that was set up in the film series. I'm glad

we had these Back to the Future comics from IDW,

from this creative team, from these editors,

from these letterers, writers, artists. Because

this, to me, is Back to the Future 4. 4, 5, 6,

7, 8, 9, 10, whatever you want to say. Like,

I don't need a fourth film. The holy trilogy

of Back to the Future is a holy trilogy. The

fact that we have these comic series from IDW

is just bonus, because I was really skeptical

going into reviewing this, because when I read

the very first issue, because Steve and I actually

did episode 115 of The Pullback, we did just

issue number one when it first came out, like

a first reaction kind of thing, and I wasn't

feeling the art back then, and I wasn't feeling

the story, and I was just, where are they going

with this? But obviously since then, and since

I've read it and reread it at times, Like I love

what they did with it. I think it's absolutely

amazing. I think it's great Some of the art choices

are you know what they are and I don't necessarily

like them all but they're still it's still good

art Yeah, I mean the art overall across most

of the back to the future series Has been hit

and miss. I definitely like the art in the earlier

like the first half This series not to say like

and Ferrera's art is great. It's not It's not

horrible, I mean the only one that I You know,

there was biff to the future You know and we

did that back in the day, you know, I like the

art but I didn't love the art Yeah, the only

back to the future series where I disliked the

art and and again, it's just It I don't hate

it. I don't love it. It's just it's like the

2016 Ghostbusters movie. I don't hate the movie.

I don't think it's bad. It just doesn't click

for me and that was Something I'll talk about

the next time I'm on the show. Okay Yes, so spooky

On a scale of zero to five, what would you give

volume five of Back to the Future? I'd give it

a four flux capacitors out of five. I'm probably

going to give it three and a half flux capacitors

out of five. There were moments where I'm like,

can we move this along a little bit? There were

a couple moments early in the beginning. Okay,

you're dragging this mystery out, and finally,

when Doc revealed what happened to the treasure,

it's like, Eureka! We have it! Let's continue

on, please. Yeah. Um, it's not bad. It's not

a bad rating. And I do recommend people read

this series, volumes one through five, and all

the other stuff that IDW did with Back to the

Future. Coming up next time, in episode 389...

Joe Reed and I tackled the TMNT macro series,

Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael.

So we've got that. And then after that, JT and

I will be back to tell you tales from the time

train from Back to the Future, which will close

out the Back to the Future stuff until Transformers

Back to the Future is actually collected and

traded. I love Jigawatt. I'm just saying that

right now. I haven't read it, so I don't know.

I mean, I know of the character, I know the character

is there, and I know that there's an action figure

of the character that scalpers and everybody

else bought it before anybody else could, but

scalping is evil, folks. Yes. Don't use the dull

blade. I'm sorry. That's some horribly sharp

wit you have there. Where can the people find

you online, sir? Oh, you can find me all over
