About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Ryan the UnEvenFlow dive into IDW and DC Comics' Star Trek/Green Lantern crossover Volume 2: Stranger Worlds, written by Mike Johnson with art by Angel Hernandez. They explore how the story logically continues from Volume 1, featuring Khan and the augments from the 2009 JJ Abrams Star Trek universe alongside Sinestro, Atrocitus, and the Green Lantern Corps. The hosts praise the detailed artwork, vibrant colors, and faithful homages to both franchises, and discuss standout moments like Kirk receiving the Guardians' prototype ring and the various team missions across Oa and the Enterprise.

These guys at the GCRN would make great Green

Lantern Corps members. Seriously. Who are these

guys? You've just jumped inside the pull bag.

Join TFG1 Mike and the rest of the comic reading

crew here at the GCRN as they make their great

escape into comics. From DC, Marvel, IDW, Boom

Studios, Xenoscope and more, we have everything

you want to read right here. Transformers comics?

Yeah, we cover that. He -Man? Yeah, sure. DC

superheroes like Batman, Batgirl, Nightwing,

and Batman Beyond? Yep, we have those too. How

about TMNT from IDW and I Hate Ferland from Image

Comics? Yeah, we have all that here. Plus, so

much more. It's all inside the pullback here

on the Geekcast Radio Network. So without any

further ado, it's time to talk about the comics

we are reading right now here inside the pullback.

Hello and welcome to The Pullbang! This is episode

373. I'm of course TF2 and Mike. Joining me is

Ryan the Uneven Lantern Merkley. I guess that'll

do. I guess that'll do. I don't know. So we are

continuing on with IDW and DC Comics. Star Trek

Green Lantern. This is volume 2. Stranger Worlds.

This is, once again, written by Mike Johnson.

Art by Angel Hernandez. Colors by Mark Roberts

this time around. Letters by... Endworld Design?

Endworld Design. Okay. Make sure I read that.

Not a person. Yeah. Right. I just wanted to make

sure that I read the thing right, because the

series that it's for IDW is Chris Carisi and

Sergaitos. DC side, it's Jim Chadwick and Michael

McAllister. So once again, love the art. Yeah,

and the colors still pop despite the change in...

Yeah, Mark Roberts is an amazing artist. He was

the colorist for the longest time on the DC MOTU

stuff that had been done a couple years ago.

And yeah, I just... Continuing on loving this

crossover like I was wondering like how are they

gonna? Continue from where they obviously they're

in there still in the Star Trek universe 2009

JJ Abrams universe Because you know after last

light it's not like you can go back to the now

destroyed DC universe So I mean, they continued

it pretty logically, so we discover that the

rings are all running out of power because, of

course, they haven't found a lantern to recharge

anyone. And Sinestro comes up with a plan as

they realize that the Manhunters exist, which

means that Ova exists in this universe. So Sinestra

comes up with a plan to find a battery in the

meantime Atrocities finds just a asteroid filled

with eight and reawakens the Beings within which

of course is calm and the augments last seen

in into darkness Which we mentioned it last time

definitely not my favorite Star Trek film But

having said that, this is a great use of them

here. I was impressed with. I was surprised to

see them, because, again, this isn't exactly

the most well -remembered Trek film, but they

made a good choice in using it. Yeah, I feel

that, again, having Khan and Atrocitus and everybody

else that is. Expanding in this universe kind

of thing that they've created here. I think that

works He's obviously no Ricardo Malteban because

nobody can be a Ricardo Malteban con but because

he's obviously based off the Cumberbatch Abrams

verse one. I liked it here better than I did

in the movie. Oh, yeah, I So yeah, they Have

multiple things multiple problems going on long

story short. Oh, it does exist Sinestro frees

the yellow Battery yes, but he frees the yellow

sort of being the yellow number discrepancy whatever

anyway within and yeah leads to a Knockdown drag

out the Guardians release their prototype ring

which finds its owner which inevitably is Kirk

which I like I mentioned the last time I like

that they didn't just throw it on him in the

first volume yeah I think it works here yes for

what the story is I think it's I think it works

here Not necessarily a bad thing, but I find

it strange that they were able to work in a love

story that has nothing to do with Kirk Did you

have Monty and Carol? Yeah, looking up and I

was like, wait a minute like okay then and I

love bones when he says speaking as your doctor.

I guess this arrangement does have its health

benefits Yep, I like pretty much everything in

this too. And we get a number of different DC

references, including I really liked the one

at the end that, you know, nudge nudge, wink

wink, apparently Krypton exists. And especially

if you're gonna, cause you look at what DC has

done over the years, you look at what IDW has

done in their 20 year timeline that they've been

a publishing company. IDW has often made deals

with Marvel, with DC, like there are certain

things that are like, you know, I've seen certain

like Batman things under the IDW thing. It's

like old reprints or something or other kind

of thing. So, you know, publishing companies

make deals with each other all the time. And

this just goes to show you these types of crossovers,

this one, Batman TMNT. Star Trek versus Transformers.

It does work and it does make some sense. The

only real gripe I have here is how much more

pink Kellogg looks in this. Like it's a more

reddish pink. Same thing with Sinestro. I think

the red is taking over just a little bit there.

Other than that, I mean, I love the story and

I love the art. I mean, my question was going

to be the same sort of half one I had and we

talked about last time, which is how is Guy Gardner

alive? He's such a moron. It's one of those unanswered

DC questions. How do these people manage to live

at all? And I love that they have a separate,

obviously they have Kirk and all them. Hal, but

they use Guy and John. I like that they use John

more than Guy, but they have them on this secondary

mission with Killawog, and I thought that was

really, really cool, giving all of the cast something

to do without it feeling like it's pushed onto

us. Like, oh hey, by the way, John Stewart and

Guy Gardner go over to this place and do this,

but it really, really works. Yeah, and we mentioned

it at the start to the artwork being fantastic

it definitely helps Especially the later sequences.

So in the end we get the sort of Expected team

ups Khan teams up with the Klingon Empire. And

so we've got a big space battle going on at the

same time as everything that's happening on Oa

between the Guardians Sinestro and the Green

Lanterns down there So it all just again you

mentioned it last time the colors just pop in

this and Also, I mentioned it the last time too

that It's real hard to get space rights in comics,

but no they continue doing a just a fantastic

job the enterprise looks nearly perfect in every

single panel there's a shot in I think it's like

the first second second or third issue Where

they're warping away to wherever they're going

Because I'm trying to cycle through and find

it as I'm talking It's one of those things where

they're it's right before yeah, it's right before

the right before Sinestro comes in it's after

Carol and Scotty are both wearing red and they're

obviously gonna die soon Just shirts of death

But that bottom panel there, after Kirk says,

agreed, then we'll find a way to draw out Sinestro.

The warp shot of the Enterprise flying away,

oh, it's so good. The colors, the lines on it,

just everything with the Enterprise in this.

Any Star Trek fan, whether you like crossovers

or not, is going to love these stories. At least

I'd hope they would, because they pay a lot of

faithful attention to the details of both universes.

Yeah, there's a lot of homage to both Star Trek

universes as well, Mirror and, or, Mirror, geez,

Abrams and the Prime universe. Yep. Not the Mirror

universe. Yeah, no, not the Mirror universe.

Nobody's got a beard. Not yet, anyway. Yeah.

Why we said that, yeah, they definitely leave

it open to the possibility of it continuing.

But I don't know if they're going to. It's been

a few years now, unfortunately. Yeah, it's been

a few years since this one came out. This one

came out early 2017. So it was two years between

the first issue of the first volume and the first

issue of this volume. Because the traded version

came out, the collected edition came out in 2018.

And yeah... I don't know if they're going to

continue it. I mean, I love like you said, I

love it. They leave it open, but who knows? I

would like to have seen more sort of Kirk using

the ring in terms of more sort of creations of

his more creativity. So more sort of kind of

future or Starfleet related. Staff versus you

know we always get the twentieth century stuff

like guy creates a big assault rifle got a octopus

from how one point. I might have been fun to

have some like. Weird or funky twenty third century

track. Creations with the ring but then it picking.

And maybe they'll do that at some point. Obviously,

in the end, everything is happy, happy, joy,

joy. Everybody saves the day. Sinestro escapes.

That's the big sort of possibility. He goes to

the antimatter universe, which exists in Star

Trek. So, curious to see if they ever do anything

with that. As well as, I mean, the rings are...

The enterprise slash star fleet take possession

of the red and yellow or red yellow red and orange

rings yeah but they still exist so. Let me go

to a story with the other click on sad access

to the rings for quite some time it's possible

they reverse engineer just like scotty yeah.

I think that's cool. And you're right, Kirk needs

to, if there is another story, because at the

end of it, it says the end for now. So at some

point, sometime, whenever the next anniversary

rolls around for either franchise, maybe they'll...

Well, to be fair, we're recording this on the

53rd anniversary of Star Trek. Okay, I was thinking

more of like the 60th anniversary. 40th anniversary

of Transformers or something, you know, not transfer.

No, I know. Whatever you make, they're not answered.

My point was, yeah, we got a ways to go before

we hit another milestone. Yeah. But I did very

much enjoy this. I think these are super fun.

Nice stories that, as I said, you know, pretty

much give off. great homages to both franchises.

It isn't just like sticking two things together

that aren't supposed to be together and then

making it work because it's, you know, cross

dimensions, it's cross universes, it's alternate

timelines. Star Trek is all about all of that

stuff and so is DC in most places. I mean, DC

has the multiverse so, you know, it's not like

it's not uncommon for them to do something like

that. Yeah, I'm just I would like to Have them

it would be nice if this could become something

they do every one to I don't know one to two

years or something like that, but Yep, what would

you give this one? I think it's another five.

It's fun Yeah, I'm right there with you. I think

it is another five out of five Usually when I

give negative ratings even like middle ground

ratings even like when I give a three it's because

something hit me the wrong way or something didn't

work for the story kind of thing and There were

no lags there were no oh come on really you gotta

do that in this story It all made sense it all

flowed very well, and it's well written in the

art as we've already said is amazing That's one

good thing about the modern day comics and not

to knock the you know where comics came from

but If we start doing 90s comics on this show

and the arts bad I don't know if the show can

survive that because I know the 90s are are notorious

for some really out -there art It was mostly

good the night is more notorious for really bad

crossovers that kind of nearly put a stake in

through the industry. That's true. I'm still

waiting for Comixology to have DC, or for DC

to say, hey, Comixology, here's our DC versus

Marvel thing, that four -issue thing from the

90s. That's the only one thing that I would want

for them to put on Comixology at some point.

With punch or punching Batman. What happened?

Yeah Alright, I think that's gonna do it for

us for a quick episode The story is wonderful

folks. It really is fun fun story. There's a

number of good moments It's just a very kind

of it's a the story progresses quickly and the

way you would expect it to it's why there's not

an awful lot, you know, there's not necessarily

any twists or turns we discussed the real surprise

of it, which was a really smart decision by Johnson

to bring in the augments and to use Khan and

his people. Might have been nice to have seen

more of the followers for Khan, but eh, you know,

like I said, of nitpicking at that point. Yeah,

I mean, the story flowed very well. It's point

to point to point. It's not like there's a couple

of things You know reading it in trade paperback

reading it as they collected edition There's

a couple of things that if I was reading it in

single issues Because it is a six issue mini

series if I was reading it back when it got released

I'd be like oh hey this ended this way with Han

killing atrocitas now wait till next month I'd

probably go nuts Not that I'm already not going

nuts, but, you know, it is what it is. That's

gonna do it for September here inside the pull

bag, folks. So we've gotten Autobot Lee August,

we've gotten kind of Star Trek September, I guess

a little bit with some Batman and Power Rangers

in there and Transformers. October will be more

Star Trek stuff. There will only be three episodes

in October. There will not be four episodes in

October. 373 .5 Joe Reed and I continue on with

Superman year one number two and then Steve Megatron

and I are gonna do Mirror of Broken for Star

Trek and then hopefully Ryan, Steve and I can

do Star Trek versus Transformers. So that's what's

coming up on the show. Where can people find
