The Pull Bag
DC Comics and KFC Crossover Comics Review

About this Episode
There really is a Kentucky Fried Chicken school.
Yep, today we're making the Colonel's original
recipe. What have you learned? Fresh chicken
makes the best chicken. And that we use 11 herbs
and spices. Oh, but that's the Colonel's secret.
And special pressure cooking. So it's always
tender and juicy. Looks like you've learned to
make great chicken. Only way to serve our customers
right. It's so nice, nice to be here. So good
about it. So good about it. You've just jumped
inside the pull bag. Join TFG1 Mike and the rest
of the comic reading crew here at the GCRN as
they make their great escape into comics. From
DC, Marvel, IDW, Boom Studios, Xenoscope, and
more, we have everything you want to read right
here. Transformers comics? Yeah, we cover that.
He -Man? Yeah, sure. DC superheroes like Batman,
Batgirl, Nightwing, and Batman Beyond? Yep. We
have those too. How about TMNT from IDW and I
Hate Fairyland from Image Comics? Yeah, we have
all that here. Plus, so much more. It's all inside
the pull bag here on the Geekcast Radio Network.
So without any further ado, it's time to talk
about the comics we are reading right now here
inside the pull bag. Hey, fellow university students.
Man, that Psych 302 class is tough. You know
what makes me feel better? A great lunch. Like
this $5 fill -up from KFC. This popcorn chicken
is made from one piece of chicken. Not like those
nuggets that come in funny shapes. Are you Colonel
Sanders? Yes. I mean, no. I'm just a normal college
student. It's Finger Lickin' Good. Hello and
welcome to The Pull Bag. This is episode 329.
We're a bit late, folks. I'm, of course, TFG1Mike,
and I'm all by my lonesome this time around.
I had lined up several hosts, co -hosts, to do
this with me, but sadly, it just wasn't in the
cards. This is the first time I've done a solo
episode of The Pull Bag since episode one, which
was the Iron Man 3 prelude issues. So it's been
about five and a half years since I've recorded
by myself. I don't normally like recording by
myself. If you go back and you listen to the
TFG1 podcast from episode 0 to episode 13, very,
very, very green when I first started podcasting.
But here it is, the pull bag, as I said, episode
329. And today... We're going to be talking about
DC Comics KFC Presents. I was shocked that this
was a thing. A crossover between the DC superheroes
and Colonel Harlan Sanders from Kentucky Fried
Chicken. Now, I guess you could say I spent most
of my life in Louisville, Kentucky, Simpsonville,
Kentucky, that area of Kentucky. 25 years out
of my 38 years of life on this planet. At this
point, 38 and a half, whatever. And I always
liked KFC before I moved to Kentucky in 1993.
So, I don't know. I just figured I would do this.
My original co -host that I had in mind to do
this was Spade of the Balt Matrix. If you've
ever been on YouTube in the last 5, 10, 15 years,
or however long it's been that Spade has been
on YouTube, even though that he does a lot of
Transformers video reviews and that kind of thing,
he was one -fourth or... one -fifth of the TFWire
podcasting crew for the longest time with Jesse,
Ryan, and others. Jesse, Matrix Prime, also created
TFWire. The reason why I wanted Spada on this
episode was because he had done a funny video
years ago, and hopefully I'll embed it in the
post so you guys can see, where he tried the
KFC Double Down. And it basically ends with him...
Acting like he's going to pass out or like he's
gotten sick from eating the sandwich. I don't
normally eat KFC sandwiches. I normally stick
with their extra crispy chicken strips things.
I've had, obviously, regular KFC before in my
lifetime, and it's okay. I love their biscuits
and their mashed potatoes. Those are awesome.
Anyway, so I find out that DC Comics has done
these three issues. with Colonel Sanders. And
I figured, oh, hey, why not do something fun
and do something light? As next time around,
we're going to be going back and finishing up
Superior Spider -Man after four and a half, five
years, or however long it's been since JT from
Saskatoon and I did that originally when the
podcast first started. So, again, something light,
fun, interesting, cool. These three comic book
issues are, they're all 20 pages of story, but
they read really, really fast. I was surprised
at how fast these things read. So I'm going to
take a quick break, and we're going to come back
after this with The Colonel of Two Worlds. Good
morning, babe. Good morning. Oh, no, Colonel!
to let you take away KFC's Nashville Hot Chicken
with its delicious, spicy, smoky flavor. Well,
it was always just a limited time offer, Colonel.
Well, uh, no more Nashville Hot Chicken, no more
Colonel. I mean, what are you gonna do? It's
not like you can find another Colonel, right?
Really? I mean, I haven't even been doing it
that long. It's bigger looking good! All right,
folks, I'm back here, and, uh... Kentucky Fried
Chicken presents, along with DC Comics, The Colonel
of Two Worlds, starring The Flash and Colonel
Sanders. Two colonels, how can this be? Find
out in a stunning adventure like no other. Absolutely
love this, folks. So, the story is done by Shane
Edwards and Tony Bedard. Script is done by Tony
Bedard. Penciler is Tom Dernick. The inker is
Trevor Scott. Colorist is Hi -Fi. Cover artist
is Tom Grumet. Trevor Scott and Hi -Fi. The letterer
is Deron Bennett. The design was done by Randy
Mayer. So basically, this is, you know, kernel
of two worlds kind of thing. It's like Crisis
on Infinite Earths or whatever. It's just so
fun. It really is. We start out at the Central
City Fairgrounds, and we end up running into
Captain Cold and Mirror Master as they're regaling
us with a tale of how they almost got the Justice
League, sort of. And then an evil Colonel Sanders,
called Colonel Sunder, comes into the mix. Um,
we then go to, uh, so Colonel Sunder is here
to basically do things the easy way. That's the,
that's the goal of, of this comic because everyone
knows the story of Harlan Sanders. He did it
the hard way with hard work and perseverance
and all that. Um, so obviously the evil Colonel
Sanders, the earth three Colonel Sanders, um,
is going to do it the easy way. The billboard
here in the book at his restaurant, Easy Fried
Chicken, don't knock it until you've fried it.
Oh, my God. The puns in these stories are simply
amazing. And he has Mirror Master and Captain
Cold working as employees of this place. It's
too hilarious. Colonel Sunder starts breaking
out into a song that's televised on TV, so we
get to Colonel Sanders. This has got to stop.
That jack leg is carpetbagging my whole public
image. Maybe this is that identity theft nonsense
I keep hearing about. So, Colonel Sanders leaves
KFC to go over to Colonel Sunder's Easy Fried
Chicken. And, meanwhile, the Flash is stopping
a bank robbery along with Green Lantern, and
they end up at Easy Fried Chicken. And they try
to stop Colonel Sanders from going in there,
because Colonel Sunder is the one that robbed
the bank. Oh, man. This is just so fun. I'll
link the Facebook album on the pullback page,
folks, that I've taken screen caps for. But this
is just so cool. You have the two kernels here.
Satisfaction. Good luck finding that here. My
food's fast, cheap, and easy. Yes, but satisfying?
Hmm. I don't know how you stole my good looks,
but you got none of my know -how. And they go
on and have a battle. And Colonel Sanders kicks
Colonel Sunder's butt. And The Flash and Captain
Cold come in. And all this action happens. Colonel
Sunder with some sort of nugget buns. No, nugget
guns. I thought it was nugget bun guns. But it's
nugget guns. So he's got a gun that fires chicken
nuggets. Really? Seriously? That's hilarious.
um i love the art the artists do an amazing job
fitting colonel sanders colonel sunder kfc into
the dc universe world i'm not sure which i think
the version of flash that's in here is wally
the suit i don't remember seeing and this came
out a couple of years ago folks um by the end
of it they're all like oh the hard way is the
best way kind of a thing And it ends with, you
know, if I didn't see it, I wouldn't believe
it, says Flash. I just call it Kentucky Fried
Justice. And he has the $5 fill -up bucket there.
They even go so much to change the mail bag of
the comic. You know, the colonel's mail bucket.
I just think this is super cool. This is, you
know... When I think of DC Comics, I think of
those hard -hitting, dark storylines like Dark
Side War or the Joker stuff that Scott Snyder
did a few years ago, Death of the Family. I think
of really, really dark storytelling. When I think
of DC Comics, I don't really think of a lot of
fun storytelling. The only thing as fun as this
is... that I remember absolutely loving is the
Batmite six -issue miniseries from Dan Juergens
and Corin Howell. That was a fun little book,
but you don't see DC putting stuff like this
out, and I think this is super fun, super interesting.
We're going to take another quick break, and
we're going to come back to the next one in the
story, which is the Colonel Corps. So that's
the next issue, and we'll be back after this.
DeCien, the superhero webcomic. DeCien's got
superhero antics and sexy girls. For action,
drama, mayhem, and more, read it now at DeCien
.com. D -A -S -I -E -N .com. And for the new
DeCien podcast, go to Patreon .com slash DeCien.
All right, folks, I'm back with the second issue
of KFC Presents the Colonel Corps. This one...
This one is... So I said earlier, Kernel of Two
Worlds was kind of like Crisis on Infinite Earths.
I guess it could be, except this is called the
Crisis of Infinite Kernels. So I was wrong in
that. I guess the last one is more of an alternate
timeline type of thing. I don't know. This one
is... Script is done by Tony Bedard. Pencils
are done by Tom Dernick. Ink's done by Trevor
Scott. Colors by Hi -Fi. Cover art by Tom Grumet,
Trevor Scott, and Hi -Fi. Letters done by Carlos
M. Mangul? I'm probably butchering that name.
But having the same people on the creative team,
for the most part, is very cool. I think that's
a great continuity bit. And this story is all
about how I've had it up to here with Harlan
Sanders and his holier -than -thou hard way.
So we have Colonel Sunder, basically after his
defeat, thinking he's going to somehow get his
revenge on Colonel Sanders. As we go through
the issue, we've got Colonel Sanders flying the
KFC flag, and we've got basically a whole bunch
of other colonels show up. There's a female one,
there's other male versions, there's a female
Flash in here. And the whole gist of this story
is that... They basically have to save the universe
from Colonel Sunder. So most of the issue is
Colonel Sanders going around to all these other
Colonels of Infinite Earths and getting them
all together for this big giant war kind of thing
with Colonel Sunder. Which is interesting, because
they all have to use kind of the Flash's treadmill?
as a time jump kind of thing. It's very cool,
very interesting, very fun. They go to so many
worlds, and I love the image of all the colonels
with the female Flash character. I think that's
so cool. I love the art on Colonel Sunder. Oh,
that's what it is. Colonel Sunder's plot is to
make... All of the Colonels of the Infinite Earths
forget one ingredient of the Eleven Herbs and
Spices secret recipe. I remember this now. And
basically they all have to get together because
they all can only remember one thing about it.
So not all of them know the entire recipe. That's
a little ingenious on Colonel Sunder's part.
We get Gorilla Grodd involved along with, like
I said, the female Flash character. And there's
a big ol' war between all these characters. Big
ol' fight, I should say, not war. And Colonel
Sanders is like, You can't beat hard work with
lies and tricks. Mine is a will that can't be
broken. Colonel Corr, on your feet. And we have
this nice image of all the various colonels in
the Corps going to defeat Colonel Sunder. The
easy way does not pay, so heroes do it the hard
way is how it ends. And I love that final image
of them all. I think it's so cool. Again, we
have the mail bucket. We have KFC's Crusaders
of the Hard Way. Very, very cool. Very, very
fun. This issue was interesting. I don't know
why it's not listed under the others, the other
two. And for some odd reason, you can't actually...
I don't know why DC... stopped comixology from
being able to buy this these three issues because
they have and it's a little weird i don't know
so but i absolutely love uh the colonel core
issue i think it's super fun it's it's a nice
little plot that you don't expect it's a nice
little twist kind of thing and it's just fun
That's the whole purpose of episode 329 here
in the pull bag, folks. This is a fun, fun comic.
Go out, try to find this in print, and read it.
If you're looking for a comic book thing to make
you laugh, to make you smile, to make you groan
at some of the cheesiness of it all, or I should
say the extra crispiness of it all, get these
issues. I'll be back after this with the final
issue, which is Kentucky Fried Chicken Presents
Across the Universe. folks. Finally up is the
third issue, Across the Universe, KFC Presents,
DC Comics, or DC Comics Presents, KFC Presents,
I don't know. Script done by Tony Bedard, pencils
done by Tom Dernick, inks by Trevor Scott and
Sean Parsons, colors by Hi -Fi, letters by Carlos
M. Mangul, again, I'm probably butchering that
name, cover by Tom Grumet and Trevor Scott, along
with Hi -Fi. And this one is probably the silliest
one of all. This one has the Colonel and Hal
Jordan Green Lantern trying to figure out who's
stealing all the... I can't even believe I'm
going to say this. Oh, God. The new KFC sandwich
that the Colonel... The Zinger. That's what it
is. Trying to figure out who in the universe
is stealing all the zingers. That's the basic
plot of this. That's what I mean when I said
earlier about how fun these three comics are.
The plots are just not even, like, they're there
and they're cool, but it's so different and so
interesting to me that DC Comics did this. Again,
it's a fun, fun thing. So, as we begin this,
we see, you know, Colonel's unleashing the new
sandwich, the Zinger. And, you know, he talks
to Hal. He says, Hal, my boy, I'm glad you asked.
See, I'm going to need your help with getting
my sandwich out to the whole universe. Or rather,
the Green Lantern's help. So we have a small
little recap of how they whooped Colonel Sunder.
And we then go to the Green Lantern Corps ship,
and they basically send Zingers, all of the Green
Lantern Corps, including Kilowog, Jon Stewart,
and others, probably Guy Gardner as well, even
though he's my least favorite Green Lantern.
Kyle Rayner, I think, is there as well. If I
had to pick, if I had to rank my top four Green
Lantern characters, it would be... John Stewart,
Kyle Rayner, Kilowog, and then Hal Jordan. Hal's
cool, and I like him, but I was first exposed
to Phil Lamar voicing John Stewart in Justice
League and Justice League Unlimited. I love Kilowog,
and I love Kyle Rayner as well, because Kyle
is just kind of this cool, new kind of kid, and
Hal is that, I don't want to say old hat lantern,
but you always see stories with Hal Jordan in
it. So they send out all the Zingers to all the
planets and none of them get any. They're all
empty. And the reason for this is because Larfleeze
has stolen all of the Zinger sandwiches from
the Colonel. The Green Lantern shares his ring
power with the Colonel and the ring... It's a
green lantern ring with a KFC bucket as the center
of it. I'm like, what the heck? Why would they
do that? That's so fucking funny. I love that.
So they go 13 .7 billion light years away to
the source wall. And they find out who has and
who's doing... This with the stealing of the
zinger sandwiches. And we find out that it's
Lar Fleas. And basically, the colonel charges
him. That'll be $3 ,457 .50 plus whatever sales
tax y 'all have on this stinking mud ball. And
Larfleeze is like, mine, they're mine, and I
want more. I want them all. I want all the zingers.
I love the art. I love the colors. I love how
this is, out of the three comics, these colors
are by far the brightest contrast between the
green of Green Lantern and Colonel Sanders and
the orange of Larfleeze. I love that. I think
that's absolutely funny. Not funny. I think that's
absolutely cool and interesting and fun. So the
colonel finally gets a good idea and uses his
power ring to create a knife and a fork and a
chicken leg. And basically... And Larfleeze figures
out the Colonel smells like zingers because the
Colonel makes the zingers. And they go to a whole
thing of saying, hey, why not have a KFC all
the way out here so you can have all the zingers
you want? Kind of a thing. And he goes, you know,
Colonel's like, of course, you're going to have
to run the place up to my standards. Don't worry,
we have an excellent training program. So he's
going to train Larflees to cook the zingers.
And it basically ends with, you know, I may not
be a real space cop, but this is indeed an honor.
Now I'd like to have a word about how you feed
all these fine employees of yours. Again, we
have one more mail bucket. And I assume there's
supposed to be another one. Because it says,
next, Apocalypse looking good. Which basically
means he's going to team up with Superman. I
don't know. As I said, these were out a few years
ago. Not sure if it's going to come back or not.
I hope it does. Because I really, really dug
these. I thought it was super fun. I thought
that the writing was well done for what it is.
I felt that the art encompassed both the DC Universe
and what KFC and The Colonel stand for. So very,
very cool. Absolutely love it, folks. So if you
can, as I said earlier in the podcast, check
out DC Comics KFC Presents. There's three issues.
colonel of two worlds colonel core and this third
one so there's that um please check it out you're
probably not going to be able to get it digitally
you might have to find them in print because
as i said also earlier it seems that comixology
is not selling them anymore for whatever reason
i don't know why It's probably something to do
with DC and not getting enough numbers or I don't
know. But Tony Bedard and on writing and the
rest of the art team, thank you so much. You
guys really made my day with these. And I hope
to God there's more. I really, really do. So.
