The Pull Bag
Free Comic Book Day 2018 Live Coverage

About this Episode
Hi, this is Kyle Higgins and you're listening
to the Geek Patch Radio Network. Hey, this is
Thompson Thaller, creator of Long Distance, and
you are listening to The Pullback. Alright everyone,
it's free comic book day 2018, The Pullback episode
306 is all about free comic book day. I'm of
course TF2 and Mike. I'm going to be live at
Jay's Comics in Grayslake, Illinois. You'll hear
that bit here in a moment. It is the first time
the pull bag has done a live on location recording.
It went fairly well, I would say. I enjoy doing
it. I don't know how often I'll be doing it because
I don't know how often I'm actually going to
be out of the house since everyone that listens
to this podcast should pretty much know I hate
leaving my house because I love my house. It's
literally the best house in the entire world.
No one has a better house than my wife and I.
So free comic book day What titles did you grab
for the free comic book day selections? What
did you purchase from your local comic shop to
help support them? These are questions that I
want to know answers from so please comment on
this post and let me know What you got what your
swag was and all of that and how excited you
were for free comic book day this year After
the Jay's Comics in Grayslake, Illinois live
segment, Eduardo will be joining me to talk about
the Doctor Who Free Comic Book Day issue and
the Transformers Unicron Free Comic Book Day
issue. So, please enjoy, and I'm gonna throw
it over to myself because I'm live at Jay's Comics.
We are live here at Jay's Comics in Grayslake,
Illinois. This is TFU and Mike from The Pull
Bag. I'm here with owner Jay. Say hello, sir.
Hello. How are you today? Good. How are yourself?
Also here with Jimmy, the promotions dude. Hello.
How's it going? It's going. Sometimes I wish
it would stop. So when did you open the store?
How long have you been into comics? Any of that
kind of stuff? This store has been here since
1991. I've been in the comics since I was about
five because my dad was into it when I was a
child. Okay. What was the first comic you ever
read? Amazing Spider -Man. Amazing Fantasy 15?
No, no, no. Spider -Man, no. Okay. Can you believe
they're reaching 800 issues at this point? It's
crazy. It's nuts. It's absolutely nuts. It helps
when they put it out every two weeks. So when
did you decide that hey, I want to start a comic
store I want to get into What was it like back
then, the store here? Was it always here at this
location that we're at now? Yes, we moved in
the current location two years ago. And free
comic book day, you guys have a really good turnout.
Yes we do, it gets bigger every year. I don't
know why any of these other businesses are here,
at least today. Like, why are they open? Like,
clothes, people. Come on. Don't worry about being
good neighbors. The only thing that needs to
stay open is the pizza place. Yeah, well, people
need to get their clothes clean as well. What
about you, Jimmy? What have you been reading,
or what got you into comics? G .I. Joe, actually.
Oh, really? That was my gateway drug into comics,
and then from there went to X -Men. Ah. Huh.
Expanded ever since. Yeah. I haven't been able
to get into Marvel or DC, and the only thing
I'm reading from DC right now is Batman Beyond
Rebirth. It's too much. Between the two of them,
there's just too much going on in both of them.
reboot every X number of years, months, days,
whatever. Well, I'd like to keep the fans interested,
you know, change up the game a little bit. Plus
they want the cheddar. Fans change over the years,
readers change over the years, so things are
gonna keep progressing or else it's gonna stagnate.
Yeah, absolutely. We understand it. Absolutely.
So what do you guys get going on for free comic
book day usually? Is there a usual thing? Does
it change every year? We try to change it up
all the time. Today we have our first ever sidewalk
sale, quarter books, dollar books. We've got
buy two get one free, graphic novels, ominous
as absolutes. We have 10 % off new comic books
that are on the new racks. Toys are 10 % off.
We have some discounted t -shirts for $9 .99.
You got the radio station here too. The radio
station just pulls up 95 Little Rock. BBQ Productions
is here serving food. Awesome, awesome. First
time for them, second time for Will Rock. Awesome,
very cool, very cool. Yeah, I mean, it's always,
Free Comic Day has always been a thing of, oh,
come out, have some fun, get some free comics.
And I've always said, and I know other people
say this as well, it's like, even though the
comics are free, you should still buy one or
two things to help support the shop, because
shops don't just... get free comics. We do not.
We do pay for them. Yes, absolutely. If you're
getting five free comics once a year, the least
you can do is buy a trade or whatever. Just buy
something from the store. We have something for
everybody. Yeah, absolutely. It's an amazing
store you guys have put together. Thank you.
Just absolutely love it. It's just super fun.
So if anyone wants to come out to Jay's Comics...

comic book day here May 5th 2018 this is TF2
and Mike and I will send it back probably to
myself for other free comic book stuff in this
episode Thank you so much to Jay from Jay's comics
here in Illinois I am back folks and joining
me is Eduardo from Let's be reals and other things
around the web. You've heard him on tooncast
and things like that with me Talking spider -man
and x -men cartoons and all that and we're here
to talk about two of the free comic book day
issues we're gonna start with something that
is new to me because It's too British just too
British if it's not faulty towers are rising
damp. I don't care, but I tried is the 2018 Doctor
Who Free comic book day issue. Hello, sir. How
was your free comic book day? Oh? busy busy busy
Went ended up going to two different comic shops
First off I got to give you know the the comic
shop where I did like the bulk of my free comic
book day stuff is Omega frog in Sparks, Nevada.
And it was great. I mean, just the whole setup
managed to get everything that I wanted to. For
me, Transformers Unicron and Doctor Who were
actually like the top two. It's like, no matter
what happens, I gotta get those issues, and well,
I got it. Also went to Comic Kingdom in Reno.
Mainly because my wife Patricia found out about
the Labyrinth comic and we managed to find two
issues at Omega Frog and we found like the missing
issue at Comic Kingdom so now she has all three
issues to date and you know she really wanted
to find that so you know we found it and yeah
also you know just because because hey you know
why not just put a little cherry on the sundae
You know, we'd had to slip into Target and they
were having a huge DVD Blu -ray sale and I find
finally I finally picked up Iron Giant, you know
That was one of those was one of my favorite
movies and it's one of those that I've never
really actually just pulled the trigger and bought
a copy because it always shows up on TV and finally
did and I Expect that pretty soon. I'll be sitting
down watching it and then crying my eyes out
man -style at the Superbad. You know the scene?
Oh yeah. Yeah. Heck, I've said it before like
online and stuff like that, I dare you. I dare
you to watch that scene and not just start crying
like a baby. You can. Yeah, you can. And if you
don't, I'm sorry, you have no soul. Exactly.
Your soul is. Well, you can't not cry at that
scene because that's essentially Dominic Toretto
as Superman. is fast and the furious superman
robots he's got nitrous oxide in him not to mention
i mean that's that's uh... you know you got uh...
john mahogany the the late john mahogany from
fraser as a as a general yeah where's the robot
mansley uh... now i assume you did not because
i hope nobody does this but Free comic book day
is a celebration for all of us that read comics,
that are fans of comics and everything else,
folks. And as I said earlier in the clip with
Jay from Jay's Comics, these shop owners don't
get these books for free. They offer them for
free to us, but I assume you all purchased a
bunch of stuff. Because that's the thing, like,
yeah, you get five free comics or whatever, buy
one or two things, even if they're just like...
Funko pops or if they're single issues that you
don't have or something that you're missing or
whatever I assume you all purchased stuff as
well, right? Yeah. Oh, yeah That's what like
that's why I you know, that's why we bought the
the labyrinth comics You know, that was our you
know, that was our thing You know, I mean that's
you know Omega frog opened up like about Little
little over a year ago or so and you know, it's
it's been a it's a great little shop and We do
you know, we do like to support it Absolutely,
and I bought I bought I think I think when they
opened up I bought I bought like a couple of
things from them I bought Green Arrow rebirth
volume two from them I also bought I believe
it's volumes three and four of secret warriors
Hmm. Very cool. And I also bought a couple of
issues of the Hasbro handbook from them. Oh,
cool. Very cool. Yeah, for me on free comic book
day, I grabbed... Though I'm not a big fan, and
I understand why they have to do this, but I'm
not a big fan of Marvel and... What's the other
one? Marvel and Star Wars. The Marvel and Star
Wars Funko pops, they get arou - Funko gets around
it, being able to make them by making them bobble
heads. And... not a fan of that at all. like
i understand that there's a way to work around
the license and all that but i'm not a fan of
that still because we just saw avengers infinity
war i had to get iron spider i almost got Thanos
but Thanos um... he demanded silence and he was
sold out uh... uh... it's so funny i'll i'll
by the time this goes live folks on on geekcastradio
.com i will have had uh... pictures put up I
actually took pictures at the event at Jay's
Comics and they actually had a Thanos out there.
This dude's costume was amazing. The gauntlet
with the stones was awesome. His whole face was
great. And one of the guys promoting their sidewalk
sale was like, if anyone wants a picture with
Thanos, please come see Thanos. He's lonely.
I'm like, well of course he's lonely. He destroyed
the universe or at least half of it anyway. Yeah,
well, that's what happens, you know, that's what
happens when you're a guy like Thanos and you
decide to make a snap decision So I got Iron
Spidey because I just love I haven't even seen
I'm only halfway through spider -man homecoming
I haven't even seen the whole damn movie, but
I just love Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Spidey
and Seeing the Iron Spider suit in action in
a movie is just super amazing absolutely love
it So I had to get Iron Spidey for Funko Pop
and I got which is surprising. I didn't realize
it would be there I got a villain from my 66
Batgirl. I got Penguin from the Batman 66 Funko
Pop series. Oh, nice. Yeah, so I can actually
reenact that whole episode where he tried to
marry Barbara Gordon. Yeah, so. But yes, we're
here to talk about free comics from Free Comic
Day, and as I said, we're starting with Doctor
Who. You are a Whovian, I am not. Just I just
can't there's too much when Doctor Who was on
Netflix the 2005 series was on Netflix I tried
watching several episodes what I tried to do
was I tried watching the first episode from Two
or three of the season so I started with season
one season two season three I just could not
follow along. I just could not, and I've just
not had any interest in this. But I figure, hey,
it's free Kamihote, I'll give it a try. I don't
know. Well, okay, I will say this. If you do
want to try and get into Doctor Who, because
we're dealing with something that has 55 years
worth of continuity and stories and whatnot,
The best thing I would say for a newbie is yeah
start with the 2005 you know series season You
know the one with Christopher Eccleston and kind
of work your way through Another another way
you could do it is you could also kind of start
with the the second season the first You know
the first stuff with David Tennant Probably I
would say probably start off with the episode
new earth because in in the in that case you
have a fresh start that you can go through because
there are places where it'll be a little tough
to kind of get into because you'll have you'll
have some continuity you know um looking through
well going through the free comic book day issue
uh i would say that fortunately i'd say two out
of the three stories you don't need that you
know you could probably get into If you're not
that familiar with like all the you know with
like all the the backstory and stuff like I would
say the seventh doctor story and the 11th are
a little easier to get into the The first story
the opening story with you know, the the one
catch a falling star Yeah with well kind of nominally
with the tenth doctor because like the narrator
Gabby has been you know, the doctor's companion
that's a little tougher only i mean the good
the good thing is it kind of provides an overview
of at least her adventures with the doctor but
the ending the ending where she runs into the
twelfth doctor might be a little difficult if
you're not familiar with the idea of the doctor
being able to change the space and everything
okay now if i'm correct me if i'm wrong tenth
was tenant right yes 11th is Oh God not Capaldi.
He was 12th 11th was Matt Smith. Yes, okay. Yeah,
okay What I wanted out of after I went and read
this because I read this quite literally before
we hit record on this episode folks like I needed
10 extra minutes to get through this. Catch the
Falling Star, as we're looking at it, I just
have the first two pages open where it has the
title and it has Gabby's narration throughout
the whole thing. I am legally blind. I've said
this before. I have 2200 vision. Even if I had
my glasses updated to what they should be now,
I would only have 2060 vision. I still had issues
read, and this is not about the story. It's about
how the comic is presented. I had severe issues
reading the narration bubbles because of the
kind of cursive with the background, and I just...
I got it, but at the same point, by the time
I got to like... the end of the second page I'm
like okay I don't care about this chick and it's
not her fault that I don't care about her because
it's the it's the way the comic is made it's
it's the way the narration bubbles are done with
like it's not cursive but it kind of looks like
it wants to be a little thing I don't know Yeah,
what I was hoping out of this and they kind of
give it to us at the end and we'll talk about
that later What I wanted this to be was hey,
it's 2018 Hey, guess what's coming later this
year the 13th doctor like that's what I wanted
out of this I wanted something that was new and
fresh to me and I guess this technically is new
and fresh obviously but like like you said fresh
start with either the first season of the 2005
series the Christopher Eccleton series or you
know the the the second season or whatever the
tent the the tenant season or whatever um but
that's what i was really hoping out of this free
comic book day issue was not three separate stories
from three sec this is like people telling me
oh watch rose watch uh blink and watch whatever
so i watched rose i didn't care for rose because
i hate that companion Whoever that you know and
blink was okay, but I don't know so that's why
I say folks That's why Eduardo is here because
he can actually you know be the positive voice
of reinforcement here Well, I'm kind of the negative
Nancy over here So anything else we want to say
about falling star about Gabby's story like you
said it's basically just her adventures with
her recollections of adventures with the doctor
Yeah it well also i mean if you're well if you
are if you're a fan of if you've been a fan of
doctor who especially from like the classic era
up till now there's even a couple of little there's
even a couple of there's like one or two things
um like for example on the second page when you
have kind of like this image of i guess all these
monsters that they've run into uh the one that's
kind of in the center You know, this guy that
looks like he has this Egyptian -style black
mask. That's a classic villain named Sutec. He's
kind of like an evil alien who posed as like
a Greek god. And he's a villain that showed up
in probably one of the best classic series adventures,
and that's The Fourth Doctor, it's called Pyramid
of Mars. And I know that... I know in recent
years, he's kind of had a stage to come back
because he showed up for some adventures with
the Tenth Doctor. In fact, I have the trade paperbacks
for both. I have two trade paperbacks that have
Sutec versus the Tenth Doctor. You got the Cybermen.
One of them is shown almost bottom right. the
bald -headed alien -looking thing that's a centaur
and so you know you've got some classic villains
I mean I think also weeping angels in there you
know that's the statue that's covering its face
so you know if you're a fan at least those things
are there and you know you got some nice nods
and yeah it's interesting because I know that
the the end of catch a falling star kind of matches
up with In a recent issue of the the tenth doctor
comic like I think it it it's You know, it's
not expanding but also kind of doing, you know
redoing that scene You know and it kind of it
makes me wonder is This yeah are like for example
that in the 12th doctors comic is he now gonna
be traveling with Gabby? You know, there's Gabby
jumped doctors Yeah, because as soon as I see
this ending here, Doctor, you, I told you, if
you ever fell, I'd catch you. All I can think
of is that old 80s song, Catch a Falling Star.
Oh, God. Actually, that line, it has me thinking
of another 80s classic, and actually one of my
favorite songs, which is Time After Time by Cyndi
Lauper. That too. Because remember, one of the
lines that gets that she keeps saying in the
refrain is, if you fall, I will catch you. Yep.
So the Armageddon Gambit. This villain here in
the opening looks like a cross between a Power
Rangers villain and something out of Star Trek.
Yeah, so this is the Seventh Doctor, right? Yep,
Sylvester McCoy, which, you know, for those who
aren't, like, classic series people, Sylvester
McCoy, actually, he was in The Hobbit. He was
Radagast the Brown. Okay, alright. So, you know,
you got a little, got a little, you know, crossing,
crossing the streams there, as far as geekdom.
That and he, uh... You know give him a monocle
of a purple hat and a longer nose he could essentially
be the penguin from Batman 66 Because of the
umbrella So this story basically has them him
and his companion ace coming aboard this ship
How do you want to talk about this because again
Okay I'll have to edit part of this because you
kind of cut out there for a second So it has
them coming aboard this alien ship to stop them
from taking over the world or destroying time
and space and whatever Yeah, I mean I would say
that whatever whatever it is that they were planning
on doing their You know their they stopped it
Yeah, he's like uh, but why you could have destroyed
us because everyone deserves a second chance
I wouldn't waste it if I were you Yeah, well,
that's the well. That's the that's the doctor.
You know the doc Most most incarnations of the
doctor with like a couple of exceptions Yeah,
he's not about destroying his enemies. You know
he's about well. I got to stop you And you know
he he can be he can be merciful at times Like
I said there there are a couple of times where
he has no choice, but You know, that's the thing.
He has no choice and it's like he doesn't enjoy
doing it So in this particular case, it's the
doctor being the doctor and like no ice ice.
All I had to do was stop you And by the way a
little a little aside actually since you know
since we're talking about the I was actually
at uh... the gallifrey one convention in l .a.
back in february and the seventh year of the
actor for the seven doctors of us mccoy and sophie
aldridge who played ace they were at the convention
they were like a special guest that's awesome
by the way they're both and by the way they're
both wonderful people they're both very sweet
uh... you know great uh... you know just great
uh... great people to talk to uh... you know
and just and it's like and I actually it was
this the the story this this story in free comic
book day actually acts as sort of a Frequel to
a Seventh Doctor miniseries that's coming out
And I and I found out about it at Gallifrey one
You know that was kind of a you know it was the
fact that the convention was going on That's
when Titan comics decided to say oh and by the
way You know, oh, you know, the the Seventh Doctor,
you know, the Seventh Doctor himself, the Vicious
McQuay is at Gallifrey 1. Oh, and by the way,
Seventh Doctor miniseries. It's kind of it's
funny because the artist Christopher Jones is
somebody who goes to the Gallifrey 1 a lot. And
I had met him the year, you know, last year at
last year's galley. He actually has worked on
the Young Justice comic for DC. And he was one
of those that was pushing. for the return of
young justice and he's pushing like okay the
comic is coming you know the cartoon is coming
back hey dc i can work on the comic yeah no you
know um but yeah i i ran into him like the opening
you know the opening night festivities and he
didn't he kept his mouth shut like i didn't find
out until the next day and i went online and
i saw the announcement for the seventh doctor
so i kind of like Jokingly teased him and I was
like you didn't tell me about this. You know,
you didn't say anything last night He's like
I couldn't do it. I couldn't do it, man So, I
mean I gotta I gotta give I gotta give props
to Christopher Jones, you know, he's not he's
not Tom Holland, you know He knew about this.
He kept his mouth shut, you know good for him
Good for good for him No need to hand off a fake
script Exactly. Yeah So then the final story
is Midnight Feast with the Twelfth Doctor. Uh,
Eleventh. Oh. Wait. Matt Smith. Oh, that's right.
Whoops. Eleventh. Okay then. Yeah. Matt Smith.
Um. It's okay. He's gonna get a midnight snack
at first and then... Let me end up in you know
this bar that you know Lone Star and barf should
be at For diner or whatever And I just can't
get into these things man, I don't know what
it is but Well, that's the well it's you know
it again, this is one of those this is one of
those that This is one of those and You know,
this is one of those things that like much like
the seventh doctors, you know, I think the seventh
doctor story and this story They're the ones
that I thought you really don't need that much,
you know, like you don't need to worry about
huge backstory This is just a fun little, you
know, it's a fun little thing. It does hearken
back though to Matt Smith's first episode because,
you know, Matt Smith's first episode he had just
regenerated and he's talking about being hungry
and, you know, he's talking about talking about
being hungry and he runs into young Amy Pond.
just goes through the kitchen trying to just
make all this food to find out you know exactly
what he you know what he wants to eat so you
know he just he goes through toast with butter
he throws it out doesn't want beans doesn't want
apples finally settles on fish fingers with custard
and it's kind of funny that he has fish fingers
and custard here and it's like nope still hungry
and just ends up going through a lot more food
Which it looks I don't know Kind of looks it
doesn't look like he has quite the The the issue
with that he did before but it's kind of funny
that we have this all over again And this ends
with well that story ends the the actual comic
ends with you know Reader's guide of the Doctor
Who stuff from Titan comics. You turn the page,
and it's the new 13th Doctor coming. Adventure
begins this fall. Yep. See, I know it's not much.
It's basically just a teaser. It's kind of something
like if this was a Marvel movie, this would be
like the end credits teaser, where it's just
the TARDIS shows up and she pops out and it's
like, the 13th Doctor will return. Mean yeah,
I could see I could see why You know some people
would want more, but at the same time She's you
know at the same time Her adventures are being
filmed as we speak right you know there's a lot
of it's being kept under wraps and You know if
Titan were to do like a full book. You know like
a three page story in here How would they be
able to do it without? spoiling something about
what's being filmed so this is kind of just this
is a one -page way of celebrating the the 13th
you know the coming of the 13th doctor and just
saying hey we're you know we here at Titan comics
we're jumping in on this too you know we are
gonna be doing her adventures so you know it's
like if you let you know if you're if you enjoy
what's good what's on you know what's on TV then
You know, you'll know you'll be happy to know
that the comics are gonna be doing the same thing.
Yeah, absolutely Yeah, and by the way, the the
guy who wrote Midnight Feast George Mann. Mm
-hmm has actually done Yeah, he's also written
a couple of Doctor Who novels or two He's he
did a great one called engines of war which featured
the war doctor The doctor that was the doctor
that was played by John Hurt in the 50th anniversary
special Really awesome book. I mean, I'd highly
recommend it. Very cool. Very cool Yeah, that
is very awesome Oh boy, okay, so yeah my adventures
into Doctor Who still elude me because I still
can't I like the stories. They're great stories.
They're great little mini stories for a free
comic book day issue. Is it going to make me
go out and get some of the Doctor Who comics
from Titan? Sadly, no, but I don't know maybe
it appeals to other people. I don't know what
it is. I just I just can't wrap my brain around
Doctor Who right now. Well, it's you know what
I will I will say that it is Doctor Who it's
see like with With a lot of British productions,
whether it's humor like Monty Python, Benny Hill,
Faulty Towers, adventure like Doctor Who, or
even just Shakespearean stuff. There's some British
fiction. It's one of those things where you either
get into it, you find a way, you get into it,
or you can't. I mean it's nothing it's there's
nothing wrong with either thing you know if you're
not you're not too weird if you're into the British
stuff you're not you know and you haven't sinned
if you're you know if you're not enjoying it
it's you know you just have to have the right
mind I don't know I don't know some people would
have said that I've sinned by now by not enjoying
it there's there's some people out there that
would say that to me look I kind of look I okay
Would love it if you became a hoovian, you know
Because there's some there's awesome stories
in there and even some fun cheese because if
you look at the classic series and you look at
You know you look at some of the production value
There's some unintentional comedy in there, but
you know if you can't get into it you can't get
into it I mean, I'm not you know I'm not gonna
strap you to a chair and prop open your eyes
clockwork orange style until you love it Yeah,
I will I will say this though if you want to
try if you want to do one more try When the 13th
Doctor comes in, she also has a new showrunner.
It was the same guy who was responsible for the
series Broadchurch. They're talking about the
series being kind of almost a fresh start, new
Doctor, new showrunner, the logo actually is
brand new. So if you want to give it like another
shot, Uh, you know, I'd say, yeah, when, um,
if you have, uh, if you have BBC America, give
it a try, you know, give it a try. You never
know. You know, this might be the, this might
be the gateway that you're finally like, okay,
I'm sold. It might be. I don't know. I have summoned
you here for a purpose. We also have Transformers
Unicron number zero from IDW. Now, I assume you
are a Transformers fan since you are here. Have
you been keeping up with this stuff? Yeah, I've
been keeping up. So you've been reading for the
last 12 years? Yeah, I mean, there's some stuff
that I still have to check out. I never read
the Bumblebee miniseries that came out years
ago. You know, there's some... I think, uh, there's
some things here and there that I've never really,
like, sat down and give a serious read, but I've
been following it. Like, I know what's going
on. I know, you know... I would say that I really,
like, did a deep dive after Dark Cybertron. Mm
-hmm. Actually, not... Well, no, not Dark Cy...
Sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Not Dark Cybertron.
Uh... I really... Well, I started to get deeper
once, um... Once they did once they split off
into robots in disguise and more than meets the
eye That's when I really started to pay attention
and then I Well, yeah, that would be the very
beginning of the universe. It would be 12 -13
years ago, the very beginning of the universe.
Because once you read Death of Optimus Prime,
you can either go on the Lost Light with More
Than Meets the Eye, or stay on Cybertron with
the politics with robots in disguise. And then
that all led up to Dark Cybertron, which was
the big event, and then Combiner Wars, and all
of that. So... Yep, yep, yep. Just wanted to
make sure you were... And by the way, beautiful
cover. Yes. Really awesome cover. I gotta admit,
this is one of those things that, you know, you
read it, and then if you have the Transformers
soundtrack, you punch up Unicron's theme. Yep.
Absolutely. Don't tell me you didn't do that.
Don't tell me you didn't do that. Of course I
did that. Of course I did that. By the way, you
know that the, have you seen a picture of the
full cover? Uh, yeah. because it was yeah the
the white bar that they do for for free comic
book day they cut off um like behind the white
bar is starscream and um rc but they cut them
off so all you get is optimus bumblebee and wind
blade looking up at unicron yeah um i did want
to ask you what do you think of unicron's uh
comic book look it's okay I mean this this cover
was done by Sarah Peter d 'Orche I assume that's
how you say her name I could be wrong And we
are friends on Facebook, so I guess I should
know that but I like her design for Unicron I
think it's cool. I think it's interesting obviously
the design is gonna be different on the interior
because Alex Milne is the artist on the interior
But the cover I like it. It's it's ominous. It's
you know yeah Yeah, and I like Unicron's design,
because it's an interesting... You still recognize
it as Unicron, but I like kind of the whole techno
-organic nature of it. You know, especially because
it shows off the idea that this is, you know,
he's something that consumes and absorbs worlds.
So, you know, just all the patchiness of it,
you know, it just... It really sells the idea,
like the basic idea behind Unicron for the IDW
universe. yeah absolutely and did you know i
mean we're and by the way we're talking about
uh you know keeping up with the comics but it
seems as though the comics can't keep up can't
keep up themselves because in this story we have
a couple of spoilers okay you know in case you
haven't noticed because yes yeah i i'll i'll
say this right now i've kept up with up to the
point that they relaunched in the lost light
optimus prime i have not read any lost lighter
optimus prime at this very moment. I want to.
I'm going to be doing that for the show later
this year. We're going to have a very, very giant
Autobotly August on the pull bag later this year.
We did Autobotly April and Autobotly August last
year to cover stuff. Autobotly is a term one
of our co -hosts came up with years ago on my
Transformers Generation 1 podcast. Basically,
the scene in one of the Season 4... One of the
season three, season four episodes of Transformers
Generation 1, where Skylinx looks like he's shitting
out all the guns out of his backside. My buddy,
Pecan Corn Michael, he's like, that's not very
Autobotly. And it's just kind of stuck after
all these years. So made that into a thing. So
yeah, I have not read all of this is kind of
new to me I kind of follow along because John
Barber is on writing Alex Milne is on art Colors
done by Sebastian Chang So John I know John's
writing and I know his style. So I I think people
can keep up with this Okay. Yes, there are gonna
be some spoilers, but if you've not been reading
it, then you should be fine but what I love about
this is First of all the title of the story our
darkest like they can't even do the full line
obviously you know I love John's Captions for
the titles for the characters RC full of trepidation
wrong the space Knight Optimus Prime Autobot
narrator Bumblebee full of heart because you
know Bumblebee's alive again folks in case you
didn't know yeah Well, here's the thing. This
is what's a little bit of a spoiler. If you've
been following Optimus Prime and you've been
following the set on Cybertron stories, like
Till All Are One, it was revealed that Bumblebee
did not die in Dark Cybertron. It seems like
he got shifted to another dimension. It started
with Starscream. kind of having what appeared
to be Bumblebee's ghost whispering in his shoulders,
but then there was more, there were other indications
that, okay, maybe this is not what, you know,
maybe things are not what they seem. You know,
maybe there's, maybe there's more than this to
meets the eye, so to speak. And then finally
there was a, I think it was the Transformers
annual that showed Bumblebee is in fact alive.
What's a bit of a spoiler is that he's come back
to, like, the universe. Mm -hmm, you know there
and in fact at the end of the book, you know,
there's kind of a little You know, okay. This
is the story so far leading up to this and again
it actually spoiled Stuff because at the point
at the point where the Optimus Prime comic is
It's in the middle of the revelations regarding
shockwave and onyx prime Like the last the last
issue that came out was Optimus Prime being shoved
by a shockwave slash onyx into a portal which
Now we see is supposed to lead to him running
into bumblebee and then and then the two of them
like coming back out into the into the universe
Also, I mean we have like in the middle of the
comic we have a moment where they're they're
flying through I guess it's the surface of unicorn
and they see you know, they see dead, you know,
they see dead Cybertronians and you can see Cliffjumper.
I'm guessing that what was supposed to happen
is there's an issue of Optimus Prime or an issue
of one of the comics where you have the... Well,
basically what you have is you have the... They
mention that the planet Velocitron, which is
one of the Cybertronian colony worlds, that it
disappeared so I'm guessing we're going to have
an issue where it disappears and you know that's
where we get the death of Cliffjumper and one
of the the corpse that's to our left is Override
who's the leader of the colony and then you have
like a nice little easter egg because you have
a hot shot as he appears in the Cybertron cartoon
Although we know that's not Hotshot because the
main IDW universe version of Hotshot is on another
planet, at least for now. Because we don't know
if Unicron is going to have lunch on it. Yeah,
Unicron is always going to have lunch on it.
You know what I want to see? I want to see Transformers
Marvel crossover series. Unicron versus Galactus,
who can eat more? Oh, jeez. Cosmic Hot Dog Eating
Contest with Unicron and Galactus. And you know
what has to happen, right? What? It has to be
George Takei voicing both characters, superhero
squad style. I'm hungry. Oh my, that was a good
lunch. A planet? Yeah, exactly. A planet of battle
beasts? A planet of beetle borgs? Ew, disgusting.
But I like those VR troopers, those are good
people. Interesting revelation here that the
planet that ROM is based off of was actually
a Cybertronian colony world. That's one of those
things that when I started reading the issue
and I saw ROM I'm like, oh! Okay, so it's not
just the transformers dealing with this and then
you had the reveal and I'm like, oh oh Okay,
well played John Barber well played IDW, you
know another way to kind of link things together
And once again, I think I've said this before
I think I said this in episode 304 of the podcast
Super congratulations to John Barber now editor
-in -chief at IDW. Oh, yeah, no I congratulated
him on Twitter Yeah, I'm gonna be interested
to see what you know what comes out under his
you know under his watch I do see there's one
there's one thing about transformers unicorn
that I'm wondering because by all accounts this
is going to be this is it this is going to be
the grand finance yeah it's the end of the universe
it's yes the end of the last twelve years of
continuity who knows what they're gonna do next
uh... james roberts who writes more than meets
the eye basically said it's been it is set on
twitter and i'm paraphrasing to have a tweet
for me basically said thank you everyone it's
been a great run something something something
i forget what he says but basically james roberts
confirms that he's not coming back to whatever
they relaunch the transformer stuff into yeah
yeah I mean it's yeah I kind of it yeah Roberts
is not coming back I don't know if John Barber
is gonna write anything with his new giant assume
he will still write stuff I don't know it's it's
all up in the air and that's a good thing because
I mean okay yeah it's not necessarily a good
thing that James is done but you know James has
had look James had almost fifteen years of writing
the story that he wants to write and that he
wants you know basically will uh... more than
it's the i slash lost light basically never really
got touched by any of the uh... it didn't didn't
get touched by any of like the crossovers of
the big events yet to touch the dark side which
are obviously but like the combiner wars that
was kind of inconsequential kind of a thing uh...
but they had basically they did they did have
like uh... combine awards there was a There was
kind of a connection, but... Oh, there is. No,
no, no. There is, but what I'm saying is, like,
all of the event things came out of, like, robots
in disguise. Anything that Hasbro might have
said to John Barber or IDW in general, like,
hey, we have this new toy. Can you feature it
as a character in the book? Or can you do this
storyline? Can you create this? Can you craft
a story around this thing? It's all happened
in robots in disguise. Lost Light, more than
meets the eye, slash Lost Light, has pretty much
been... the journey of Rodimus and co and finding
the Knights of Cybertron and all of their side
adventures that they like there hasn't been to
my knowledge I don't know about lost light right
off the bat because like I said I haven't really
read anything past the first issue at this point
but I know we went through like last year we
went through all the rest of the volumes of more
than meets the eye in trade and you don't see
any just random characters to show up because
hey new toy so you know most the most i've seen
the most i've seen as far as lost light is concerned
uh... is that you know they'd be like uh... what
they may do is for example when combiner wars
happen you know that that introduced defense
or so there was like a moment where you know
the protect the box and Mirage because Mirage
is part of a combiner that got introduced where
like they had to go to Cybertron so it's basically
like them grabbing a shuttle and everybody else
saying like okay we'll see you later so it's
just like sending them off so they can link up
and you know just stuff yeah they were he was
able to do his own story didn't have to worry
about Hasbro mandating I mean you did have characters
come in but it wasn't just because buy the toy
you know It'll be I'll be curious to see how
lost light Wraps up and ties into unicorn because
yeah the way the story is now It's like how do
they how did you know it's? It's kind of like
okay. I'll I want to see how exactly they you
know they link up with everybody else because
they're really you know it's really far out now
and You actually have like Different you have
like at least two or three different groups of
people out there, right? And I think my biggest
I think my biggest spoiler for not currently
reading lost light or more than meets or optimus
prime is When optimus said when ROM was like
Soundwave says operation extrication nearly two
-thirds of the living population including Animals
escape destruction. We must do better next time
rums like what do you mean next time? Perhaps
the leader of Cybertron is better suited to explain
if you please wind blade I'm like wait what when
did wind blade become the leader of like that
was the biggest spoilery thing for me cuz like
I said I haven't really been reading it There
was well there was at one point there was like
you had lost light you had lost light which chronicle
Yeah, the adventures of the lost light uh...
you know brought brought inside of things that
optimus prime which was optimus on earth with
his group and then you know the book called to
all are one which right the third which is the
wind blade it was everything on cyber trot right
i remember reading that partially of the uh...
yet well that that basically that ended with
uh... an election on cyber tron with wind blade
winning and uh... well it it's kind of one of
those things i mean you had the the prophecy
that supposedly marked uh... star scream is the
chosen one yeah night cyber tron and it's one
of those things were to quote uh... will be one
can obi what was you know what what i said was
true from a certain point of view you exactly
uh... he did unite cyber tron just not The way
that you you know not in the way that you'd think
prophecies like this would go Mm -hmm like you
Cybertron did end up uniting Just not you know
he did he did bring people together It's just
the way the way that he did is a bit was a bit
more a bit more Starscream than a bit more Starscream
than you know chosen hero type Yeah, he's no
hot rod No. I think in his head, he would want
to be Hot Rod. But in reality, it's like, no,
you're not Hot Rod, dude. You're not going to
open the Matrix and everybody's going to side
with you as the leader of Cybertron. Sorry. Apologies.
It's not going to happen that way. So as as this
is going on we're coming up on the end of this
because this this free comic book day issue is
It's a full book, but the story is only eight
pages out of the book and You know We have the
whole wind blade thing explaining it at the end
of that panel We have optimus saying in addition
to the rest of our world's earth is in danger
I have dragged the humans into mortal danger
three billion Elonians died today okay, optimus
prime can give the bobbins a Narration to you
know because as soon as I read that I'm like
many bobbins died to bring us this information
Okay, then The last panel for the story is on
Eucharist, one of the Cybertronian colonies,
the quote -unquote Beast Wars colony. And basically,
everybody dies because Unicron, I hunger. I love
the panel of... I've always loved pictures of
Optimus and Soundwave, like G1 classic style.
I know Soundwave is a Decepticon, yada yada yada,
but I've always loved that. The end is coming,
Transformers Unicron, July 2018. So in the rest
of the issue, we'll talk about our final feelings
on the story in a moment. The rest of the issue,
you have a letter from David Mariette. who is
the editor, I believe. Could be wrong. Off the
top of my head. And then for the first time in
print, the announcement image shown at San Diego
Comic -Con 2017 by Sarah Peter Dorochet of Unicron,
Cybertron, and Earth. Yep. God, I love that picture.
And it has other covers and things like that.
It has a full -page spread of Unicron receiving
the signal decode. Yep, that was from the end
of First Strike. From the end of First Strike.
Yep. Still remember reading that scene, Unicron,
and I'm like, oh, shit. And then you have the
writer's guide to Unicron number zero, and it
has a whole thing by John Barber about the continuity
about leading up to this, which I have not read
this yet, but it's basically that. And then it
read more about, and then it has basically things
that you can read to kind of catch up. It has
two advertisements in the back, one for the Wreckers,
and then one for Transformers Bumblebee, which
is a original graphic novel that's leading up
to the new movie that's coming, Transformers,
by the way. On the back, it has the checklist
for Unicron. I love that they did this. They
took advantage of the back here. So in May, we've
got, obviously, this issue. Special free comic
book day first look at Transformers Unicron number
zero. In July, we'll have Transformers Unicron
number one, the first part of the six -issue
series that will end the universe. Transformers
Unicron number 2, Lost Light 21, the final fate
of the Lost Light crew begins here. Unicron 3
and 4, Lost Light 22, 23, Optimus Prime 22, as
Unicron attacks Optimus Prime's allies on Earth
face the fallout. Optimus Prime 23, this is in
August, and then September, Transformers Unicron
5 and 6, Lost Light 24 and 25, and Optimus Prime
24 and 25. Boy I like that they're ending things
on like oh, you know like issue 25 and stuff
That's but yeah, cuz it always yeah, it's not
a nice round number, but it's a cool odd number
It's a I would say it is a nice round number
I mean 20 getting 25 issues of a comic series
that's that's you know 25 50 75 100 whatever
But it's one of those things where it always
makes me mad when comics end on a really wonky
number Like, end on a ten, end on a five, issue...
It's like, issue, like, okay, take for example,
and I understand why this happened, and I'm not
complaining about it, but, you know, there was
one of the DC Comics Batman Beyond series, I
think it was Batman Beyond 2 .0 or whatever,
ended on issue 16, and I'm like, really, really?
Ended on issue 16? Actually, well, no, see, okay,
if it ends on, okay, for me, it's like I have
a thing about even numbers. mm -hmm you know
I'm like a fan of even numbers so having it end
on like six having it end on an even number or
a five like I'm cool with it's like it ends if
it ends on like issue 51 and I'm like okay that's
weird all DC issues should end on 52 anyway yeah
but but but my point is like I want twenty issues
i want fifteen issues i want you know the five
and zero kind of a thing like i don't want issues
sick and it's fine whatever it is what it is
uh... so yeah uh... transformers unitron folks
bear witness cuz unitron is coming he's here
yep you know it's like uh... that classic line
from the movie For a time I considered sparing
your wretched little planet Cybertron, now you
shall witness its dismemberment! Yep. Yep. Of
course, I kind of wonder if we're gonna have,
like, did you notice Bumblebee kind of did a,
uh, a little, kind of a nod to another classic
line from the, uh, from the movie? Mm -hmm. Because,
you know, we didn't, we didn't have, we didn't
have, excuse the language, shit what are we gonna
do now but we did have you know we did have Bumblebee
kind of doing his own little bit more sanitized
version of that which I picked I picked up on
that like right away Well, Primus, what are we
gonna do now? Well, yeah, because, like, again,
Free Conflict Day, you're catering to kids, and
Bumblebee would not care. Like, that's a human
thing. If Spike was around, I mean, Spike is
around or whatever, but, you know, like... If
he was there, yeah. Yeah, if he was there, I'm
sure he would have said it. But, yeah, that was
a nice little nod. A nice little thing. If cliff
jumper was alive, I would say he and jazz could
have had a scene You know, you know, well, you
know what? It's yeah, he and jazz could never
see but I wouldn't be surprised if You know,
like I said, we're we're kind of coming in on
this from the We're coming in on this kind of
from a little bit of spoiler territory because
we didn't see the the attack on velocitron Right.
So who knows maybe when maybe when the the regular
comics Catch up. Yeah that you know, we'll have
we'll have that scene, you know, we'll have that
scene and then You know, we'll have I mean it
might he might not be able to do it with jazz
But we'll have like an equivalent scene where
he does the you know, we're not getting away
Yeah, or you know they try to or they try to
like get the escape pod going and You know, he
does something like, you know, does the countdown.
Cliffjumper commence countdown. Mm -hmm. And
you know whose voice we'll be hearing that in.
Yeah, yep, yep, yep. The late, the late great...
Casey Kasem. Casey Kasem. See, that's, yeah,
he'll always be my go -to for that. You know,
I'll always hear Casey Kasem. I'll hear... Be
hearing, you know, I hear Peter Cullen for Optimus
Prime Frank Welker for Megatron, you know always
You know Bumblebee Dan Gilves in Yep, I you know,
he's my he's my go -to I think the only you know,
hey Orson Welles is Unicron that I hunger I heard
I mean no offense to no offense to John Noble
who who did Unicron for Transformers time but
yeah Come on. It's it's Orson Welles, man. You
got you got to give that to me, man Yeah, exactly.
Absolutely. Love you and Lord of the Rings love
you and fringe, but come on Orson Welles, dude
Yeah, seriously, man, you know, so and then yeah
everybody the new characters I'm just I'm like,
okay, whatever whatever voice I can come up.
Yeah. Yeah Yeah Yeah, I mean wind blade kind
of has her own voice because she was in the robots
and disguise cartoon a little bit the 2015 robots
and disguise cartoon You know I don't know. So
yeah, Free Comic Book Day 2018 is going to continue
because I'm going to have somebody, I don't know
who, but somebody and myself are going to be
talking about Shattered Grid, the Free Comic
Book Day issue for Boom's Mighty Morphin Power
Rangers comic, because yeah, Lord Draken is destroying
the world here. Oh boy. So that's coming up next.
I'd like to thank Eduardo for coming out for
the Doctor Who and Transformers Unicron part
of the episode. Where can the people interact
with you online, sir? Well, first of all, pretty
much almost every Saturday, go to blogtalkradio
.com and look up Keeping it Reels. Let's be real
keeping it real because we'll be live. almost
every Saturday at 9 o 'clock in the PM Eastern
Time, 6 o 'clock in the PM Pacific Time. For
those of you in Central Mountain, do the math,
because I'm not gonna do it right now. I'm not
gonna take up too much of Mike's time. And yeah,
I'm still on Twitter at, you know, at W -H -T
-B -L -L -N -K -I -N -G, White Balloon King.
And I'm on Facebook, so, you know, just look
me up there. And while you're on Facebook, look
up the Let's Be Reels page because, you know,
I'm on there. My fellow Let's Be Reels hosts
are on there. So, you know, and we always got
a bunch of cool stuff. So, yeah, I'm all over
the place. Not that hard to find. Very cool.
Very cool. And you'll find me, folks, coming
up next here on Free Comment Day. after this.
Alright everyone, to close out Free Comic Book
Day 2018, I am going to tell you that I did get
and read the Riverdale comic. It was kind of
interesting, kind of the history of Pops and
all of that, because Betty wants to do some sort
of story. There is like another story in there,
but I just couldn't keep following along. It's
a good comic, but it's not the best, but... to
wrap up free convict a twenty eighteen here on
the poll bag episode three oh six i'm going to
be talking to you about the shattered grade money
more from power rangers issue that came out uh...
the annual the twenty eighteen annual which uh...
basically happens before this this is kind of
the aftermath of that uh... was uh... very very
good it's kyle higgins the team at Boom Studios
is doing amazing on this Power Rangers comic.
I absolutely love it. The free comic book day
issue of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Shattered
Grid is kind of catching us up and giving the
new readers a way to break into the comic from
March 27th to April 8th of this year. Read through
all at the time because volume five just came
out in trade for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
I read through all four volumes in that time
span because I wanted to catch up to be prepared
for the Shattered Grid event and damn When I
interviewed Kyle Higgins back in 2013 when he
was still doing new 52 Nightwing over at DC He
had said that his one of his dream jobs was doing
Power Rangers one day and Boom Studios gave him
that opportunity or he got that opportunity from
them or however you want to word it and he is
kicking ass and taking names. We have never seen
a Power Rangers story this good in years. It
pays homage to all kinds of fan service things
for those of us that grew up with it. It's telling
a unique and individual story set aside from
any of the other franchises within the Mighty
Morphin Power Rangers universe. but at the same
time it ties everything together. I absolutely
love it. The art in this is great. It's a great,
great read. I'm not going to spoil any of the
stuff in the Free Convoy Day issue, but if you
didn't grab this, you should have, folks. You
should be reading Boom Studio's Mighty Morphin
Power Rangers. Please go pick it up now. So...
The Pull Bag, episode 306. Huge thanks to Jay
and everybody at Jay's Comics for that little
interview that I did earlier, talking with him
and Jimmy. Free Convict Day 2018 was great this
year, absolutely loved it. Lots of camaraderie,
lots of people coming out to read comics and
get stuff, and very, very cool. Hopefully next
year is even more awesome. Coming up here on
The Pull Bag, we've got a lot going on. but at
the same time we're also going to take a little
bit of a break. So, this may be the last episode

old episodes of The Pull Bag and wow we've covered
a lot in five years. I'm going to start posting
some of these old episodes on the Facebook fan
page and Twitter page as well. Hopefully you
guys will go back and check them out. I know
I was still kind of raw back in those early days
for the pull bag, but because I was still trying
to find my way of how I do the show. I do want
to shout out to the one new iTunes review we
did get. I'm not going to read it on air right
now. I don't have it in front of me. but someone
did write a review commenting on that they would
wish that we'd focus more on what we'd like and
dislike on comic versus laying out the plot.
I'll say this right now, I love being able to
lay out the plot point by point, because most
of the comics that I'm reading or that I cover
on the show is stuff that's already out. I'm
not worried about spoilers for anybody, and I've
specifically said this is not a spoiler -free
podcast. So... They had asked me if, or they
had said that they wished that the main host,
