About this Episode

TFG1Mike and JT from Saskatoon dive into IDW's Biff to the Future miniseries, which expands the alternate timeline from Back to the Future II into a complete six-issue story. The hosts explore how young Biff obtains the sports almanac, his rise to power in Hill Valley, and his crimes including murder and corruption—all leading to the dark alternate 1985 seen in the films. They discuss Alan Robinson's consistent and impressive artwork, the shocking moments like George McFly's death and Strickland's psychological breakdown, and how the series finally answers lingering questions from the movies. The episode also touches on the broader IDW Back to the Future line, including comparisons to the Citizen Brown miniseries and the TellTale video game adaptation.

are all out of time the pull bag is happy to

bring you our back to the future IDW comics coverage

here in Originally, this was supposed to be out

of time October, folks, last October, and that

didn't really happen, but it's happening now,

and we've come to the conclusion. This is brought

to you by the Geocast Radio Network and listeners

like Bondo Mike. He's a long -time GCR listener

and friend who has given to us over the years

that we may be able to keep this thing going.

I'm, of course, TF2 Mike, and now playing the

role of Optimus Solo is JT from Saskatoon, kind

of like, you know, George McFly change actors

in the BTTF film, so has the podcast with hosts.

I'm not insulted by that comparison. Anything

as long as I'm not Crispin Glover. Well, you

know, you did rip out Drew Barrymore's hair in

Charlie's Angels, so there is that. Yeah. But

I wasn't Tom Green. And we should all be thankful

for that. It most definitely was the Chad. uh...

uh... uh... it it's so sorry i don't know it's

in the shop we can't go back to this uh... no

we can't go back and fix this because guess what

happened uh... i i i think we have through comcast

xfinity whatever you want to call it we have

stars uh... the stars network and the other morning

at like four o 'clock in the morning The original

Charlie's Angels 2000 film came on and I just

had to watch it. I just had to. Well that's a

good one. Full throttle can go die in a ditch.

Did you know there's two different Bosleys? Like

I know you know this but I didn't see here's

the thing I didn't know it was John and Jimmy.

when they replace bill murray with bernie mac

in the second one he's listed as jimmy bosley

not john bosley i had no idea that was to there

was two bosley's it's pretty sure that that's

a plot point but you know we're getting off topic

anyway uh... it is time to grab a pepsi free

and java the lawyer with us as we go back to

the future we're gonna close out the btgf coverage

of learning all about this to the future of this

is series is all about how biff tannen took over

so join us once you as we talk about this trade

from idw alright uh... this basically is directly

linking back to the future two and three this

happens after but this is Basically the history

of the alternate, uh, right the alternate timeline

You know, hell valley as I like to call it. Yeah,

exactly although and uh I I do remember seeing

this like first issue on the stands at my local

store and on the interior cover and They they

and even here you see it. They have the bif to

the future logo done in the bttf font, but you

know It's Biff and then you got the fist instead

of the arrow, which I really like. Little touches

like that in Gear Reader, something like this.

Yeah, IDW has done an amazing job with the Back

to the Future stuff. If people aren't reading

this, you need to. Yeah, I mean, if you're a

fan of the franchise, obviously you should give

it a look. Mean this this is something I didn't

collect like, you know, I read in preparation

for this, but I didn't collect this You know

side the spin -off mini series from the main

title because I've learned my lessons with trying

to collect every issues from like some mega crossovers

like blackest night or You know, Marvel Axis

or some such like that, and you just drive yourself

insane. See, the good thing about IDW is they

do miniseries. They're not necessarily cross

-over. Yes, you have the main ongoing that has

currently five volumes, and I think it's ending

at five volumes. Like right now, the fifth volume

time served, I think, or what's the fifth volume

called? Anyway, point is, there's basically 25

issues of the main series of Back to the Future

from IDW. Yeah, there is citizen brown which

we just covered last episode in episode 303 Which

is basically based off of the telltale game storyline,

and then there's this it's basically a self -contained

It doesn't it does and doesn't really affect

reading the main ongoing so but this is basically

like a Prequel sequel to the sequel sequel I

guess The story opens proper on like it's and

that that just that goes to the movies in his

performance like how yeah you know how much that's

that has stuck with me over the years oh yeah

i hear his voice all the time when i read these

characters now you have these in single issue

right you don't have them in uh... in trade i

have the like the single digital issues okay

yeah see i have i i waited i was not getting

the single digit digitals because i waited for

the trade in the trade the jurassic biff storyline

serves as a prequel to this i don't know if you

had seen that it was um i think it was at the

end of the last Trade of the ongoing I forget

The original like the I've got like the actual

physical issues of the main series, right? So

I probably did see it just it didn't click. Yeah.

Yeah, and that's fine Just to get the the the

Staff out of the way you get story and script

by Bob Gale and Dirk Friedolfs you get art by

Alan Robinson inks by Alan Robinson and Jamie

Castro colorist by Maria Samantoya Letters by

Sean Lee Chris Mowry and Neil you take Series

this is notice by chase morose and series edits

by Tom waltz the writer over at TMNT Friday W

Let me just look because I could have sworn the

It says here What it collects or whatever anyway

Yeah, basically there was a storyline I think

I think it was like this little mini thing at

the end of the last thing where it's showing

how Biff basically gets into the DeLorean. It

serves as a prequel to this story. It starts

October 21st, 2015. 78 -year -old Biff Tannen

saw Doc Brown veto Marty's plan to bring a sports

almanac back through time and become rich via

sports betting. So it sets it up with that and

then it gives Biff a whole little adventure of

going back to the prehistoric times and all of

that. Which is really fun, but yeah, you're right

the the main story here starts off with Biff

Doing his thing talking to himself yeah Yep absolutely

Biff's always talking to himself well, I know

I love how Biff's so dumb that he just Doesn't

quite get language nuance. Like why don't you

make like a tree and get out of here and it just

yeah No, that's just that's good. But yeah, and

it's basically it's deep It's the scene that

we see in back to the future to without, you

know, Marty Skulking around and all that right

and then we finally get a face to the voice of

This grandma, you know, like the morning after

he still got these nursing type huge bruise on

his face that he got from george what happened

to your face it's uglier than usual yeah no wonder

this guy's an asshole like this this woman like

i'd have to look and see if alan robinson's done

any art for the idw ghostbusters series because

i would swear that i've seen this art in a ghostbusters

comic before but yeah so his grandma's uh Rhymes

with Bundt cake and Makes him drive her to Is

it Vegas or Reno? I would assume it's Vegas speak

Whatever is close it's it's some Mecca of gambling

within the continental United States I'm pretty

actually I'm pretty sure it's Vegas cuz you got

like the the famous Vegas is like neon cowboy

there in the background you know the one that

does like the with the thumb and his arms moving

you see him like every movie featuring vegas

but yeah they go to a casino he paws his grandma

off on a one -armed bandit yeah he does just

the stereotype of the uh bitchy old lady playing

the slots is something that is almost immutable

within comics culture I mean currently in the

Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider comic there's this

lady that he just calls Aunt June because he's

so emotionally damaged he's just kind of looks

after this old lady because it's like the complete

antithesis to me but Biff goes off fine as a

a betting club tries to you know He tests the

book one last time, tells this guy, yeah, the

Steelers are gonna lose, and the guy's like,

shut up! Yep. And then he tries to bet despite

not being of age. Yep. But it's the sort of thing

that I'm just like, that's how dumb Biff is.

He honestly thought this was going to work without

identification. Yeah, no. Yeah, and then he hustles

back to his grandma How old are you again? Yeah

Yeah, clean your ears Gertie. That's why that's

why I asked you to do it Here's a 20 and then

she screws him over because she liked the odds

better on LA and Yeah, and still lost cuz she's

not listening Well, cuz she's a complete bitch.

Yeah And I honestly that like Allen Robinson's

art really gets into like the moments in the

film where Biff goes from like charmingly stupid

to malevolent Mm -hmm, like especially like in

the scene where you know He's trying to rape

Elaine just before George pace some like Thomas

F Wilson. It can be a scary mofo and Alan Robinson's

art conveys that you know where Biff tracks his

grandma down is like bullying her into doing

this again and then she turns it around you're

gonna massage my feet yeah exactly you see the

look of Biff's face like oh it's a fate worse

than hell pretty much yeah yeah I know like what

did you think of the grandma here like I don't

know like You look at the second film, and I

know this is not the film This is the alternate

timeline whatever else, but like you know Michael

J. Fox played all those family characters most

of them I Just can't see Biff Tannen. I can't

see Thomas F. Wilson playing a little old lady

And yet we saw John Leguizamo play a fat clown

in the Spawn movie, but that's besides the point

Well, yeah, but that was a fat clown huge difference

But yeah, so she screws Biff out of however much

money Like basically like they let's say they

got a hundred bucks. He gets the original 20

back and she's like go screw yourself Yeah, I'm

keeping the rest of them. We'll back to my slots

unless you want to talk to the cops And then

you get this guy who you know, there was a time

where you have a creeper like this outside a

club in a movie who Nowadays he'd be some kind

of pedophile now. He's just like this slick gangster

type Mm -hmm, you know just stick with me kids

stick with your uncle Lou. Mm -hmm and he basically

You know gets the info Biff gives him the info

to make a huge bet They win on this boxing match.

He's like go wait for me in the garage while

I get her payout He's like this at least Oh smart

enough to know I'm not gonna get screwed over

twice. Mm -hmm so Louie plays him and Bifco gets

his car and then Louie's like yeah, you really

are stupid kid now let's see what you're trying

to hide back here and he finds the almanac and

You know If we think the Hellscape or the Hell

Valley thing was worse imagine how bad the world

would have been if Louie actually had the almanac.

Oh, yeah Absolutely and you see like Louie's

like and this is where the series like You would

think being back to the future as dark as you

know Like I'd say back to the future 2 is really

as dark as the movies got This is like just goes

a bit further because you know, we're in the

alternate timeline. You see Louie has killed

grandma Yeah, and and as we like wrap the body

up in some plastic just throws in the back with

a shovel and he's gonna like Take out Biff with

a tire. I and then you see again You can see

the rage and the power in Thomas F Wilson's face

as he kills Louie and all of a sudden he's like

no no it was self -defense and he got what he

deserved, and he killed my grandma. Yeah, because

here's the thing, is that in all of these trades,

in the original, in the main ongoing, in these

miniseries as well, Bob Gale writes letters,

in the beginning, to introduce this to the audience,

and we all know who Bob Gale is, so, you know...

in this letter at the opening of the trade here

he specifically says this is just pure unadulterated

biff and that's really what it turns into as

we go further and further here oh yeah and again

biff is just smart enough because he's just smart

enough to know that after he buries his grandma

out in the desert she's got a finger death and

of course there's some guy in hill valley that

makes forged documents because why should any

town in america be untainted by the veneer of

you know criminal society he's like yeah just

make sure it says she got creamed you mean cremated

yes that i knew it had to do something with coffee

which kind of made me laugh yeah biff makes me

laugh in this but he also makes me cringe because

biff ain't biff is smart but he ain't so smart

He is as stupid as the proverbial pound bag of

rocks Mm -hmm, you know, he's ten pounds of stupid

in a three pound bag. Mm -hmm But we see him

like, you know glad handing the cops and you

know You know, he's and now he's spun the story

of like, you know What goes on like how he got

all his riches? Well, you know, my grandma left

me money and you know, god bless her and all

that Then he tries to pick up Elaine again and

Lorraine. Yeah Lorraine. Yes, sir brain fart

and then you know Strickland calls him in and

he essentially Expelled I can't tell if he meant

to get himself expelled on purpose or he honestly

thought he could buy principal Strickland I think

he honestly Thought he could buy him and then

this also goes to prove like he's walking around

with like, you know, I forget Exactly, how much

is in that wad like a grand a couple of grand

But you see best trying to like let like fake

his way out and then he drops this man Well,

maybe this will change your mind and then he

has You know, you see at the graduation ceremony

You know, he gets his buddies to prank Strickland

in a scene reminiscent of Carrie somewhat except

water instead of pig's blood and then we see

the The first issue, at least for me, ends with

Biff going on to begin his lucky streak. Yep.

Now, going into the next... What did you think

of this first part of the story here? I liked

it. I thought it was interesting. I thought we

basically get the whole thing with Biff and...

how he gets the almanac and all of that and Old

Biff gives it to Young Biff and Young Biff basically

has no you know no uh scruples no scruples no

no anything really but you know he can just do

it you know and he does all this stuff with you

know like like you said Louie killing the grandma

him killing Louie yada yada yada and he basically

fudges his way through all of this and Yeah,

you're right. Biff wins again. Luckiest man on

earth is how the first issue ends. I just dug

it. I love the art. Alan Robinson's art is very

well -suited to the Back to the Future timeline.

He has not worked on Ghostbusters. I'm looking

at his credits on Comixology. He's done... art

for the main ongoing for back to the future of

this series. He did Citizen Brown, which we talked

about, like I said, in episode 303 last time.

He's also done Infestation 2 Team Up. He's also

done Mars Attacks for IDW, Phoenix Without Ashes.

He's done Star Wars Legends Epic Collection.

He's done Knights of the Old Republic from 2006

to 2010. Star Wars Legacy. See Star Wars the

Old Republic so and he did V Wars which I think

was also an IDW series But yeah, I mean, I absolutely

love this is super fun You know Biff is at there's

two sides to this obviously there's the evil

conniving side and there's the dumb Auto the

level the level of dumbass. Yeah Mean as much

as he's a bully in that first movie. He's still

kind of like the guy until he attempts to rape

Marty's mom. Yeah Yeah, pretty much You get your

damn hands off her I'm gonna go back and watch

back to the future later on today. Yeah, I mean

just I've got that Jones now But yeah, the the

second issue starts where Biff's gone to Hollywood

interrupts uh... a party like celebrating chirped

intestines when i think it's the thirty second

uh... oscars you know the way they do this is

uh... for some sort of awards and it's it's the

rkl hollywood theater it's just as thirty second

annual awards it doesn't say oscar academy or

anything and i think that was good because we

know what that really means like obviously but

uh... you know we don't need to really No But

who knows how Biff winning money has affected

the timeline in other ways Yeah, it's going to

become clear very fast. I just now noticed this

I did not notice it when I read it the first

time the next panel after the awards panel Awards

after party the Beverly Wilton since when did

Wilton Knight from Knight Rider buy a hotel I

get it they they couldn't call it the Beverly

Hilton because hello then they're knocking at

the door yeah yeah exactly yeah exactly but looking

at that I'm like Beverly Wilton oh when's kit

gonna show up kit versus the DeLorean who wins

that's a fight I want to see exactly yeah so

yeah you know basically What the we're I don't

want to say photo bombs has been but he like

interrupts the proceedings areas like holy shit

That's the luckiest guy in the world and he he

gets these floozies all over him and he takes

his first swig of champagne he's like The hell

is this shit? Yeah, and then he meets this film

producer Bernie and Long story short Bernie takes

Biff for a ride. Yeah Okay, so You notice the

the guy's name right Bernie Bernie Kesoff It's

essentially Bernie Madoff Bernie Madoff with

a lot of money. Yeah. Yep, but it boots but yeah,

so like and But Biff gives him money Biff goes

to check out this movie and Bernie's like I love

the following couple of pages where Biff goes

and makes money, he's buying all Bernie's stuff,

and then he basically is told by the mob to get

out of here. Pretty much, yeah. Although I do

like the scene where Biff, it's Marilyn Monroe,

and he's just like, ah, ah, ah. Uh -huh. And

I was like, you and me both, Biff, you and me

both. Yep. But, sorry, you say? yeah no that

was hilarious I was kind of hoping they would

find a way I mean I guess they can't because

she's at the house at the pool but I was kind

of hoping they would find a way to do the white

dress thing but with the with the great but anyway

um but yeah he yeah so Bernie is essentially

the sleazo uh you know and the movie that they

quote -unquote make is not that great he and

bernie have it out yeah and i love that that

that page where it's just biff forking over more

and more money just proves how truly stupid not

dim because eventually biff wisens up just a

little but how unapologetically stupid you know

he's like just keeps feeding him money and feeding

money and then you'd think buying a 95 grand

boat to go to the Cannes Film Festival Biff would

have been there I think he's using me yeah pretty

much yeah but and then you see Biff is just like

utterly obsessed with Lorraine because he tries

to like pick her up and take her to this movie

premiere this movie that he's making and George

takes the call and basically tells him to you

know go screw and then just like like he's just

ready to kill somebody and we all know where

that ends yeah well yeah he is so the whole Bernie

thing you know Bernie ends up dying getting shot

where apparently producers shot five times in

the head corner rules obvious suicide Uh, and

basically Biff gives him his final sendoff by

pissing on his star on the Walk of Fame. Yeah.

Hey you, stop right there. Biff Tannen ain't

stopping for nobody. Next stop. Next stop, Hill

Valley. Yeah. 88 miles. I do love how you see

like this issue, like in the timeline, this is

where it completely breaks from like the flow

of events in... Like the the main timeline in

terms of stuff like you know, there's a movie

with Rock Hudson Judy Garland Harpo Marx and

Boris Karloff that Completely in early bombs.

He gets punched out by the Duke John Wayne gets

advice from Ronald Reagan Yeah, which sets stuff

up later. And I think this is where Biff completes

his transformation from lovable dumbass to Irredeemably

evil Yeah, really So we go forward we got Into

the next part of the like the third chapter here

where it's Christmas 1970 and you see Biff's

basically been stalking Lorraine from afar like

he's always sending Christmas gifts and like

trying to buy her love and Finally, you know

George like is like, you know, we had to we got

to do something because you know if I could punch

him out I'd punch him again and like comes in

where like mayor or almost mayor Goldie Wilson

uh is attempting to uh this is i think this is

the moment where he was gonna like try and get

on the dock to become mayor and then Biff you

know bullies his way in he wants to knock down

the high school and build his mansion on the

grounds he's got the money for it Yeah, but he

doesn't have the approval and he's like, oh,

this is how it works. I've got money. You have

to do what I say. And he basically then he frames

Strickland for starting a fire. Yeah. And he

builds the mansion and he's got this water fountain

statue with Elaine with this exaggerated bust.

And you see that moment where Elaine's just like

she's starting to crack. like you know she's

like oh dear god do i have to give into this

to make it stop sort of thing and her parents

are all like you could have had all this is like

yes because your daughter is all about the money

you bitch which is the feeling i got reading

that and we see biff's married to someone i don't

think we ever i think it's just like some floozy

from hollywood and he he sends her to get beer

and she finds the Well, this is Essentially a

serial serial killers secret place Yeah, pretty

much Like I don't can you describe the mechanism

by which it opens cuz I can't I'm just why The

boobs Yeah, just like oh god even for a bit.

This is kind of evil. He'd like be a Lorraine

statue. You gotta like literally You know massage

the bosoms well it's biff i mean come on like

it's not it's not the worst thing he's done to

this point um well yeah it just and i honestly

thought when you see that frame where you didn't

get our drinks and it was just gonna like cut

to a funeral scene but no thank god like his

wife girlfriend whatever like smacks him and

walks out on him and then some man in black government

agent comes in and Like oh, we know you we don't

know how you're winning all this money But you're

gonna wash dirty money for us and you're gonna

work for the government and help us get rid of

problems and This is where BIFCO starts Yep,

BIFCO Because buying and selling homes is easy

Yeah, and then he starts a campaign to become

mayor and he's starting to buy up all the property

I like how he got like his three buddies from

high school or Canvassing for votes, and he's

got like one of them's like ten bucks if you

sign it grandma a broken arm if you don't Yep,

I love the art on those guys because they look

just like the ones that were in the film Yeah,

the one in the cowboy hat suppose Billy Zane

basically mm -hmm. It's like wow the phantom

worked for Biff Tannen circles within circles

and then they get this proposition passed to

allow Biff run for mayor and he's essentially

cock blocks Goldie Wilson's aspirations and everyone

gets a cattle except you Goldie screw you and

they start basically an underground resistance

to Tannen, you know with like citizen protests

and all that and if basically owns the town at

this point So he sends his buds and the police

to like smack him around and the whole time george

has been getting these notes like there's there's

dirt on biff stay stay close you know a friend

and he gets this phone call and it's we've biff

has actually kind of a brain and he's screwed

over george so completely we see the murder of

george mcfly yeah and yeah it's just wow like

The coolest thing about this is we finally get

answers. Not only is this thing just Biff's story

of how alternate... 1985B storyline Biff came

to power, but we see the events of his actual

actions. In the movie, it's basically stated

that he was... that George was shot. You never

found the gun that killed your dad. Yeah, exactly

So and then this is where like Robinsons are

like just where Biff's leering at George's body

in the alley Just like yeah, you're evil now.

There's no redeeming qualities in you and you

are Evil. Yep. I love the alternate cover for

this this chapter It's the Sports Almanac, but

it's Biff to the Future, 1885 to 2015, and it

basically has all different versions of Biff.

It even has a version of Mad Dog on a horse.

It's hilarious. Absolutely love it. We're gonna

take a quick break in a moment. We'll come back

with final thoughts on this issue and everything

else after this. Don't be so gullible, McFly.

What kind of stupid name is that? Must be rough

being named after a complete butt -head. So what's

up to you, butt -head? Just get in the car, butt

-head. What are you looking at, butt -head? What

are you looking at, butt -head? He's a butt -head

just like his old man was. Hey, butt -head. Will

you call it butt -head? Butt -head. McFly, your

shoe's untied. Your shoe's unfelt. McFly, your

shoe's untied. Well, looky what we have here.

Looky what we have here. Your old man, Mr. Loser.

All right, punk. All right, punk! Loser with

a capital L. Fist me with a dog on the head.

You cost 300 bucks damaged to my car, you son

of a bitch. You're supposed to be in Switzerland,

you little son of a bitch. I'm gonna get that

son of a bitch. You're dead, you little son of

a bitch! You chicken? What's wrong, dude? You

yellow? What's wrong, McFly? Chicken? Hey McFly!

Hey McFly! I thought I told you never to come

in here. Thought I done told you never to come

in - I thought I told you to stay in here! And

all the money in the world wouldn't do jack shit

for that lazy bum! You gutless yellow pie swagger!

Idiot. Yellow belly. You damn fool! Dude it up,

egg -sucking gutter trash! I'm gonna take it

out of your ass. Aw, that's about as funny as

a screen door on a battleship. I'll hunt you

and shoot you down like a duck. So why don't

you make like a tree? Why don't you make like

a tree? Hey, I'm talking to you McFly, you Irish

bug! Huh, that bug George McFly? And get out

of here. And get out of here. Say hi to your

mom for me. Alright, folks. Yeah, we had to take

a quick break there. Biftan had decided to steal

our podcast. Anyway, uh, final thoughts on chapter

three. I - It's just the story gets better and

better, and Biff, it just, as Biff gets worse

and worse in his actions, like you said, after

us seeing the murder of George McFly, there,

there's no redeeming this version of Biff Tannen.

Yeah, I mean, you can kind of accept, uh, evil

Biff in, you know, Back to the Future 2, but

it's only because you don't know. Like, sure,

he murdered George, but you didn't see everything

else, so you still kinda sorta like the guy.

But now it's just like, oh, screw you, Biff Tannen.

You deserve every beating you ever got. But,

you know, for the fourth chapter here in my issue,

I love the marriage cover where Olegin's, like...

Lorraine. Lorraine McFly. I'm sorry Leia Thompson.

I'm calling her Leia Thompson from here on out

because I get that wrong You know Leia Thompson's

coming off a Tom Wilson there any he's evil and

is like, you know Tuxedo and her whatever kind

of doesn't look like a wedding dress. It looks

like something You know, Mrs. Kennedy would have

worn to the funeral. Yeah, that's not a wedding

dress. That's a It's a Biff dress. Yeah So the

first part of this is Elaine just spelling it

out. She's doing this because You know without

George she can't be strong. I don't even know

how this scene would score in the Bechdel test

I really doubt because I know it's not gonna

do well. Mm -hmm, and it's basically Leah Thompson

accepting this proposal to marry him and You

know you get that shot from the the film of the

third times the charm and Elaine's Lorraine sorry

it's not gonna stop anytime soon folks it should

because at least this at least Lorraine can actually

dance unlike Elaine from Seinfeld yeah fine well

it's an alternate future so Elaine works no it

doesn't kind of does but I do not we get what

is essentially a godfather moment with Biff here

just in the way that it's You know drawn and

all that where? Biff basically forces this detective

on the police force to become his flunky And

You know, they frame some homeless guy And this

is you see this thing where he starts he's going

to buy the Washington Post which owns the local

paper something established last issue and he's

like i'm on my way to washington screw you you

old hag and it becomes the biffington press or

biffington post yeah and he if i love it right

after he takes over and you see them right like

changing they they rip the letters off the building

and they put biffing like biff up there and then

he fires uh woodward and at bernstein the guys

that exposed nixon Yeah, because Nixon goes on

to have five more terms or whatever Like that

it's like any other advice because now Biff and

Nixon become best friends and the men in blacks

in the background any other advice Yeah, keep

an enemies list. It's good to know who's against

you And then it's just like oh god Biff is evil

as Nixon or Nixon is as evil as Biff Yeah, that's

just crazy but and suddenly he's gonna make it

they gotta change the constitution so biff hasn't

used the almanac in a while and he goes on this

another epic winning streak i mean just literally

boatloads and boatloads of cash and it gets nixon

re -elected he's uh at the you know this party

seller inaugural ball for his second term or

third term and who's it he's talking to there

Sinatra and this is where it all kind of starts

to fall apart for Biff for a bit because at this

point he's literally won so much money gambling

in the 30 years since he got the Almanac that

every betting institution in the country has

blackballed him and his cronies And I don't name

the name of the character like the blonde character

doesn't really have anything like you got cowboy

and you got you know 3d there and you got the

blonde guys like been beat up with like a baseball

bat and told to stay out of the Out of the casino

and now biff gets the bright idea to get the

zoning laws changed in hill valley So there's

no gambling in california, but within this county

and then we get biff tannins pleasure paradise.

Yep You can't He can't beat the house by the

house be the house, you know, and we see him

like he You had the what's the old Terry? Oh

Terry motive. Yeah So like, you know, he's gonna

use Sabotage or steal stuff out of Biff safe

Biff expected this Incredible amount of foresight

has like one of his police to just murder the

man to death That's worse mm -hmm and then he

like scared was it Terry McFly I Think so yeah

or Joey or something Joey it's um It's I think

it's isn't Dave no Dave yeah, no Terry tell me

who gave you the alarm I don't know maybe it's

another kid Lorraine had because Joey is his

uncle Joey so okay. Well, it's uh, I think it's

David's the older brother Who was like the the

pizza delivery guy and then like yeah, it's been

when yeah Yeah, it's that Dave McFly's should

run out of town because he's like he's joined

the resistance for all of you know five minutes

and You know the policeman and the man in black

basically, you know harass and scare him to,

you know, stay out of town. There was that horrible

line where there's no pictures of George in the

house anymore. Biffs like, ah, exterminator came

through, got rid of all the McFlies. And you

see there's trouble with Marty, like basically

hates his mom now because she's become such a

lush and a pushover. And we finally, finally

get the debut of the hero of this goddamn story.

Dr. Emmett L. Brown makes his appearance. Yep.

And again, as much as Thomas L. Wilson, you know,

his voice comes through. Oh, you you hear like

young 1985 Christopher Lloyd just. Just God,

finally, where have you been, sir? Absolutely.

You know, it's I can't get over how much like

Christopher. Not Christopher Lloyd Sorry brain

fart again. Doc Brown is one of my all -time

favorite characters in film He is the reason

I am such a huge fan of mad scientists, you know,

sorry. Dr. Frankenstein your number two You know,

so when he shows up that's like tantamount to

like Superman showing up in Superman 2 and asking

General Zod to step outside It's on that level

for me like finally finally we're here and that

shark still looks fake yeah but it's beautiful

that's the in the trade after the the scene where

where Doc Brown shows up the alternate cover

is Biff it's old Biff getting out of the DeLorean

DeLorean's in front and the fake shark is in

the background Number five Biff goes to paradise

It's only 1983 yeah, really this Hill Valley

May 1st 1983 and well already the the toxic waste

Processing plants have blotted out the Sun and

surely the chuds and the Ninja Turtles will start

spawning in short order once the chemicals have

coagulated enough But I like how Biff's just

finally he's ascended to his rightful place in

the hierarchy of movie villainy He's on the penthouse.

He's got his floozies Lorraine walks in and Oh

god, this is like the day after she had the surgery.

Yeah pretty much It's great to see both of you

look on Biff's face when he says that. He's just

like, oh, yeah. Oh, no, Biff, no, no, no touchy,

no touchy. Yeah. Well, of course he's not going

to touch that. He owns her now. He could care

less about whether he's sticking that pen in

the company ink. And Lorraine doesn't care because

hey, I got it right. You know, she's just she's

got her best friend vodka and schnapps. So yeah.

And we go to the Doc Brown lab and One of the

saddest things in this scene Isn't how Dogs how

he's made his time machine out of a refrigerator

which I think is a not so subtle nod to Indiana

Jones surviving in the nuclear blast and crystal

skull but but the fact that you see like the

Incomplete DeLorean peeking out for under the

tarp in the background, you know, yeah almost

like a dog hiding under a bed, you know, it's

just like God's it's sad It's a very sad Although

I do like how he has Almost I wouldn't say perfected

but the way the time machine works is it sends

someone back in time and they're essentially

tethered to the present but After four hours,

they're pulled back to the time they departed

from with so as to i guess it's not quite a flux

capacitor sort of thing but it's i think it's

in an effort to uh prevent paradoxes right yeah

yeah that is kind of cool how they did this but

i like how they they have to like be feed to

the local power plant charge it up cause a blackout

go home they're sending they send presidents

president god i am tired today Principal Strickland

goes back to about 10 years or so before where

George and Biff are kids and ultimately Biff

isn't responsible for Biff because he's still

young enough at this point and Strickland basically

gets turned into a pedophile by five -year -old

Biff And then he cracks. I think just the look

on Strickland's face is like, no, no, he's evil.

He's going to turn evil. He's the devil. And

he runs away and then he, you know, goes to an

alley and he's pulled back and you just see him.

He's like a broken man. And he becomes this recluse.

And the only time he comes out is when he has

that moment of clarity and the slackers are coming.

The slackers are coming. The slackers are coming.

Bunch of slackers and I They try it again and

I think this is where they kind of took Inspiration

from citizen Brown from the telltale game Yeah,

where we get Doc Brown goes back in time and

he he goes through the little museum obiff Like

for his family history and all that you see that,

you know at high noon mad dog 10 and heroically

took out the three creole brothers with just

three shots and it's just i'd be surprised if

he could hit something on the broadside from

10 paces i mean sure he gets a gun into somebody's

back you know of course he can kill him because

you know bully yeah exactly so doc brown goes

back to prevent uh biff's parents from being

married there's that line where he's like I'm

here I've traveled back in time it works I finally

invent something that works it was like just

a little part of me it's like oh yeah but he

tries to do is like I love her she's carrying

my baby and baby Biff screws over Doc Brown yeah

he does Then you find out this whole marriage

is only so Biff's dad like I don't completely

understand but he basically arranged to the mother

is the sole guardian and This woman aside from

the color of her hair has basically is looked

evil from the get -go mm -hmm and you find out

the it's just like some marriage of convenience

and the wife's headed to Reno and Doc Brown goes

back to the future again except this time Biff's

found him and he's this then we get the Emmett

Brown committed crackpot inventor declared legally

insane And it's You just get the feeling like

this just isn't gonna end this just gonna keep

screwing everyone over. Yep Well because we have

you know one more issue after this so Uh, so

yeah, I love this one. I think it's interesting.

Um, mental word B for Biff or Biffco or Brown

or whatever. Yeah. And it's just like when you

think of, I can't remember the actor's name played

Strickland, like he's always played like pretty

strong willed characters. So to see that character

like break down and become like a quivering blob

of jelly, like I created the devil. it's all

my fault you know and then doc brown couldn't

almost doc almost couldn't handle failing in

his mission and just that evil smile you see

the silhouette of biff and that evil smile on

his face and then yeah he can i wouldn't say

can not completes his transformation but uh pretty

much it's there yeah it's there's absolutely

nothing Anyone can do now or is there? It's James

Tolkien That's it back to the future one to three

he was Lubbock in Masters of the Universe And

obviously he was the Oh Lord the guy in the movie

with the thing What was that movie? I know what

the movie is, but I can't remember. Top Gun?

Yeah, I can't remember his name. Yeah, he's the

skipper on the earth, he's like, Maverick! Stinger.

Yeah, it was Stinger and Top Gun. I don't think

he's ever had hair. I'm just saying. No, I don't

think he's ever... He was born bald, he'll die

bald. If only that was the case with me, of course,

then I probably wouldn't be with my wife, so...

you because of the hair sadly yes every time

every time I mentioned every time I mentioned

that I want to shave my head she's like divorce

I'm like okay so issue number six Biff goes too

far because Biff always goes too far This is

what would happen if George Lucas hadn't had

somebody who was whispering he said like no no

George pull it back Mm -hmm. There's now I love

that opening page. That's the most ridiculous

I've heard I mean, it's a joke, right? It could

never happen Biff wants to run for president

and since my pal dick Nixon ain't gonna run for

a sixth term Did you see look the look of horror

on everyone's face and I love how the man in

black now is so old He's he's trading his black.

He's got like the old man plaid, you know, keep

me warm sweater coat Mm -hmm, and Basically Biff

has like this site like very you know, he is

that German scientist you know analyze like like

Carl Jung sort of Sigmund Freud analyzed Doc

Brown and he's like, wow, it's real. He really

did invent a time machine. He's trying to figure

it out on his own, which is kind of sweet because

he's working on, then Lorraine came in. He's

like, oh if you're looking for a bit of action

she pulls a gun out of like, where did she of

course? She had it tucked underneath their massive

mammary is no way anyone would have found the

gun in there And she shoots this and we're like,

yes, he's dead. No, he's alive. What the hell?

Give me this one universe. That's the look on

Lorraine Yeah Yeah, and then he's gonna hunt

for Marty of course Kind of nice to see Marty

show up Well again after he took off, you know,

it's going to the private school and he comes

back he comes back to his mom, you know Lorraine's

trying to You know reconnect with her daughter,

you know, she sees where Dave is and Apparently

he Had some sort of addiction which wasn't established

the last time we saw him yeah and then marty

comes home and and you know alluring marty are

reconnecting they're trying to figure out what

they can do and you know take some inspirations

from the words of george if you don't put your

if you put your mind to it you can accomplish

anything and you know okay biff had and i realized

here i said before Biff had figured out Doc Brown

had invented time machine He hadn't actually

he's trying to figure what Doc Brown was trying

to use this thing for and Then he sees a shot

of Doc Brown in the background of his parents

wedding photo Mm -hmm. He said he invented a

time machine Your invention is gonna make me

president of the world. Oh dear lord. He's gonna

turn into Nixon's head in the jar from Futurama

Yeah, really And I like how he's got this plan

to you know, get Einstein back to Doc Brown he's

gonna leverage that to get him to show him how

the time machine works and You see Marty finally

hooks up with Doc Brown and they're like man.

It's like we should have been together this whole

time Like what the hell bro? Mm -hmm You know

and I love the setup they're sending Biff back

in time To To meet with mad dog Yeah, it's to

see how it goes and then this is all predicated

on the fact that You know, he's got Einstein

chained up. He's like I'm gonna kill your dog.

You don't you know do something for me here And

I love if they send this off and then there's

that mad scientist evil smile on Doc Brown's

face and Christopher Lloyd has played some scary

evil dudes in his time mm -hmm you know like

the the fucking hobo in the Dennis the Menace

movie kind of immediately springs to mind but

he's like that and the animated version of rest

mutant oh yeah Anastasia yeah with Bartok yes

and it's like who knows what will happen in Hill

Valley of March 18 to 1884 This is a 96 what

the hell I'm gonna kill you duck, you know cannons

just can't get away from horse crap. Nope Damn

hill are you wearing tin horn? You some kind

of circus clown? You're mad dog dead. Nobody

calls me mad dog And just like boom right between

the eyes Which is dead the witch the wicked old

witch the evil witch Mm -hmm, and he looks so

sad as if As if he hadn't expected things to

go this way and then the the trio of idiots are

electrocuted to death there Maybe they're unconscious.

I don't know Yeah, they are electrocuted I don't

know if it's to death, but they're just electrocuted

the new electrified conducting method defensive

yeah let's probably die i don't think aside for

biff i don't think he i don't think they are

dead they're probably just like incredibly jacked

up yep power surge power surge kills biftan and

widow to inherit entire empire And two of the

best things about this is they're cleaning uphill

Valley and mayor Goldie Wilson is gonna be a

thing. Yep And honestly in reading this in preparation

for this. I love the fact that this is Completely

within the timeline because I figured by the

time we got to the pleasure paradise it was going

to end with Marty and Doc stealing the Stealing

the almanac back And then this is just essentially

an extended cutscene from the movie. I really

enjoy the fact that this is a complete story,

and you see what the ultimate end of this is.

Yes, absolutely. This still happened within the

timeline, but I mean, it's an alternate timeline.

You can't really... Yeah, this is what happened

in 1985A or B or whatever you want to call it.

The alternate timeline that... Marty and Doc

ended up in in the film yeah you know so it's

a whole other thing I mean if you get it if you

get into arguing about you know if you change

stuff in the past it changes the future but then

you got to bring in multiverse theory and oh

dear I've gone cross -eyed yeah really but I

love that Lorraine's taken over BIFCO you know

she's released Doc Brown that immortal line you

know our future is whatever you make it so let's

make it a good one and you know marty gets in

there amen and i'm just like yes we needed that

i mean overall i really enjoyed this like surprisingly

so like i'm glad it was super fun yeah i'm glad

you got me in on this like give me a chance to

kind of get looked back at this and you're definitely

gonna go and watch back to the future some point

today, you know, I have nothing to do. Alan Robinson's

art the whole way through it, he maintains it's

and when I say it's consistent, I don't mean

that in any negative way because you can see

a lot of miniseries depending on the artist,

depending on the anchor, you know, the art can

sometimes vary from issue to issue. But I feel

the art was great. It was like it just Again,

consistent, but not in any negative way. It was

just consistent the whole way through, you know,

it just works. And, you know, it's Robinson's

art art is, but you see Lea Thompson, Christopher

Lloyd, Michael J. Fox, like you see, like he

puts some effort into getting their face, Tom

F. Wilson as Biff. Right. The fact that everyone

at the funeral, except for the priest is smiling,

is a little creepy. That's cuz Biff was a jerk.

Yeah, the art is very well done out. You're right

Alan Robinson did get All of the facial things

correct Marty optimus solo and I found that through

the first three trades depending on the artist

and whatever Even with whatever artist was using

it. There are times where Marty Marty's characterization

and his style will change like his facial style

his entire face Will change at one point he'll

look like super young Marty and another point

he'll look you know a completely different facial

feature type of like it's like IDW doesn't have

or doesn't want to infringe upon the likeness

rights for Michael J Fox and I understand that

if they don't already have permission to like

I would assume because Bob Gale is involved with

this and somehow some way the studio whoever

I forget off the top of my head who back to the

future was with but universal Think so maybe

probably most likely I don't remember it is okay

like I'm sure they have permission or something,

but there are times where think of it like Fastlane

the 2003 series on Fox Fastlane when the DVD

came out They had to change the music So essentially

music rights, likeness rights, same thing. So

Marty's face consistently changes throughout

the ongoing series. It didn't really change here.

Alan Robinson's art with most of the characters

is very, very well done. Absolutely love it.

It's just a fun little miniseries. I was not

expecting six issues, but I'm glad it was. You're

gonna need six issues to take this all on. Yeah.

Well, I mean, one of my favorite things in comics,

I absolutely love and adore, you know, DC's Elseworlds

and Marvel's What If. I love alternate reality

stories, you know, evil twins, that sort of thing.

So this was one of my favorite bits in the original

film. And to see that story kind of fleshed out

a bit was a huge treat for me. I mean, to see,

you know, Let's get away from Marty and Doc.

Let's see how this plays out and it was just

so much fun, right? Absolutely. It was I don't

know when folks but at some point some point

this year We're gonna be going back to the future

once again Don't exactly know when it's gonna

be soon ish later this year, maybe October. I

don't know uh... i could be wrong but we're gonna

do the final two volumes volume four and volume

five uh... of the ongoing volume four is hard

time volume five is time served as i mentioned

in a previous podcast that optimus solo and i

did for the series i did ask newly minted editor

-in -chief of idw john barber just happened folks

congratulations john barber for becoming editor

-in -chief over at IDW Publishing. I did ask

him back when we first started this what was

going on with the Back to the Future comics because

I had not seen any solicitations for them, for

the ongoing, for anything. I know they currently

have the Time Train miniseries going on, or they

did. And he said to me something to the effect

of that I think you know you know going further

that we're going to do like little mini -series

and kind of things versus an ongoing I could

be wrong. I'm pretty sure that's what he told

me So who knows I love these back to the future

comics the story so far I cannot wait to read

volume four and five of the main ongoing citizen

Brown was super cool It actually reading citizen

Brown made me go and find a playthrough of the

telltale games series the the back to the future

telltale games video game so just absolutely

love it like it just I can't say enough good

things about that game like I played it it's

it's awesome it's fun it's a wonderful love letter

to the series and a lot of those point and click

adventures that tell tales done like the guardians

games the batman games they they kind of brought

that whole genre back with uh sam and max a while

ago so if you aside from this comic which i wholeheartedly

recommend you folks read and the main series

as well if you can track the game down you know

play that play that with your kids he'll get

the movies and have a marathon tonight like I

have nothing but good things to say about Back

to the Future. I even love the cartoon. If I

could afford to get that Blu -ray set that's

got all three movies and the complete animated

series, boy howdy, you know I'd be watching that.

It is what it is. Yeah, I have the movies on

iTunes. I actually, it's crazy, I actually now

have the original VHS copies. I mean, just my

first, not first introduction, first introduction

I had to the franchise was Back to the Future.

I saw it in an edited for TV version. There's

not a whole lot you can really edit out that's

like bad. But that was the first place I saw

it. Didn't actually watch back to the future

2 until after I saw back to the future 3, but

I had read the Novelization which at the time

was the biggest book I ever read as a kid It

was like an inch and a half thick It was back

in the day when you every movie that came out

would have like if it was some sort of genre

flick Had like a novelization usually written

by Alan Dean Foster So I knew what happened the

film, but I didn't have any you know what it

looked like in my mind based on the series but

then then I saw part three and then I saw part

two and you know I've watched that entire series

over and over again through the years because

it's just magic yeah it is very much so yeah

I absolutely love the back to the future thing

I love what they've done with the comics so far

to this point it's just It's just so, so fun,

so interesting. It's basically taking the films

and giving us different storylines. Like the

first volume, like we said back in episode 300

of the podcast, that first volume is alternate

timeline, alternate untold tales and alternate

timelines where we actually get to see how Doc

and Marty actually met. not just because in the

first film as we've already said in the previous

podcast in the first film they're already fast

friends you know Marty's just going over to Doc's

and you know blowing out the amplifier and all

of that so but biffed the future was very fun

absolutely love it I'd probably give it a five

out of five oh yeah you give it anything less

than five out of five would just be unconscionable

yeah exactly So you know it's kind of kind of

like if you read the Ghostbusters comics that

IDW is putting out If you love Ghostbusters,

and you don't love those comics you don't have

a soul Mm -hmm It's just that simple exactly

All right, we're gonna be able to find you online
