About this Episode

TFG1Mike and OptimusSolo review IDW's Citizen Brown miniseries, a five-issue story adapted from the 2010 Telltale Back to the Future video game. This alternate-timeline tale sends Marty and Doc Brown back to 1931 to stop a catastrophic chain of events involving young Doc's infatuation with Edna Strickland and the rise of the dystopian "Citizen" regime. The hosts discuss the story's darker tone, different art style, and how it explores family history while maintaining the time-travel adventure spirit of the franchise.

Marty! You've got to come back with me! Where?

Back to the future! Welcome to The Pull Bag.

Join us as we dig out our latest comics and discuss

them with a rotating panel of the GCRN crew.

So sit back and enjoy this week's Pull Bag. Hello

and welcome to episode 303 of The Pull Bag. We

are all out of time because we are happy to bring

you our Back to the Future IDW comics coverage

once again here in April, May 2018. I don't remember

when this is going to be released. Brought to

you by the GeekCast Radio Network and listeners

like Bondo, Mike. He's a long time GCRN listener

and friend who has given to us over the years

so that we might be able to keep this thing going.

I'm of course TF2 and Mike. Joining me is my

Time Fugitive Optimus Solo. I like that title.

Yes, exactly. I'm here. You're here. It's time

to grab a Pepsi free and jump in the DeLorean

with us as we go back to the future in our penultimate

episode of BTTF coverage we learn all about Citizen

Brown. So join us won't you as we talk about

this trade from IDW. Now this came this story

came off of the 2010 Telltale games back to the

back to the future game that Telltale games had

done had you ever played that? No, I had that

okay. I have not either I've seen people play

it and it is pretty accurate with the voice work

and the look it looks like it's definitely something

out of this Like straight out of the movie Yeah,

and it is very very cool I uh, I went to, I didn't

go to, I knew of the fact that they had like

Marty and like they had Christopher Lloyd and

Michael J. Fox and things like that do special

voice casting on it. So I think that was great.

And Bob Yale does talk about it in his opening

letter in this story so you guys can read that.

This one's interesting. This one's really interesting

Yeah, it's definitely something that's a lot

different here, obviously We talked, you know,

Bobby L talks about how you know, this isn't

part of what the normal thing is This is some

other people that came up with ideas, you know

for this game etc And that they've kind of brainstormed

with each other and that type of thing But it's

gonna be a little bit of a departure of what

we've been talking about a kind of a different

side tale And he makes a point to say that this

is not part of what they were doing, like it's

an alternate timeline. So it was interesting

though, because he does make the comment too,

that he convinced IDW to go back in time with

me to correct a few mistakes we made the first

time around, as well as to set up some things

that pay off cleverly in true back to the future

style. We slightly altered the space -time continuum

for the better. Yeah. And this takes place after

the events of Back to the Future 3. So, we have

yet to do this on Movie Week in Review, but we

are eventually going to do three special episodes

where Optimus Solo and I do commentaries on the

Back to the Future movies, but please explain

to our lovely listeners why the hell you hate

Back to the Future 3. We'd have to do like a

full review. Well, first of all, I just don't

like the setting as much. I like Westerns and

I like, you know, stuff like that. I don't think

it fit for Back to the Future, but it's more

so the ending of Back to the Future 3. I think

there was a very clear and obvious way that they

should have gone and they did not choose to do

that. And that really made me mad. But it's more

so with the final act and the final like third

of the movie that did stuff that made no sense.

So the whole watching the movie from back to

the future to getting the idea for the for the

vest and Destroying the DeLorean with the train

and all that It's kind of stuff like that. Yeah,

I don't want to get into it too much. Yeah, there's

there's there was a very Logical way that it

seemed like everything was gonna tie up very

nicely together and they did something weird

instead And that's why I don't really care for

it I can add to get like my full take you to

actually have to have like a full review of the

third movie And I could break it down for you,

but yeah, we'll be doing that soon folks So we

start this one off with I thought I was done

with time travel may 15th 1986 So Marty is writing

a journal is he Yeah Basically um in this one

now this is a one -shot it's not a one -shot

it's a it's a five issue miniseries so i'll say

this um the art style is not like the ongoing

it's a different artist on this uh bob gale and

eric burnham are writers for the it's adapted

by them it's script by eric burnham which i've

read other stuff from eric he's a very very good

writer uh... art by alan robinson i don't think

i've ever seen any of this guy's stuff before

as the first time i've even heard of him and

i know that he's fairly i guess famous in the

in the in the comic industry but this is the

first time i'm coming across them uh... colors

done by maria i can't even pronounce her last

name I'm sorry, letters by Sean Lee, and it's

obviously by Tom Waltz. And we start off with,

like I said, the letter here, and then Marty

and Jennifer. Wait, did you hear that sound?

That almost sounded like, no way. So Marty's

monologue is, the DeLorean had been destroyed,

run over by a train. I figured that would be

the last I saw of it. Until it showed up in my

driveway a few months later I will say this about

Alan Robinson. I love his design of the DeLorean

here Yeah, for sure very classic Yeah, one thing

we are gonna notice immediately with this one

though is once again we get inconsistent Marty

Yeah, not as bad as it was early on but for some

reason Marty must be just a hard person to draw

because we get back to slight inconsistencies

in his design. Okay, so if you look at Marty

and Jennifer in that panel I just mentioned where

he's like, wait, did you hear that? I think the

reason why everyone has such a different take,

or even in whatever trade it is, how they constantly

change him up with his hairstyle and things like

that, is because I don't know if IDW has likeness

rights for Michael J. Fox. I don't know if they

have likeness rights for any of these characters

because or actors because Even Jennifer looks

a little different here And then you know by

the time he looks inside the car his hair is

completely different And by the time we get to

the point where he's playing the thing Both of

them looked look a lot slick in them in the first

few panels. They look like really slick back

80s Metal or whatever not necessarily, but you

know and now they they're their features and

their hair and everything else looks softer,

so I'm not sure yeah So yep, the DeLorean shows

up, but there's nobody inside it nope just a

tape recorder so he's listening to that and then

we get a situation where and basically Marty

needs to go to the library to find out what happened

in 1931. The library does not have what they

need, so he has to go to a townsfolk, a townslady,

that has information that the library doesn't

have and it just happens to be, and I like this

connection, didn't think about connecting to

this family, but it happens to be Vice Principal

Strickland's older sister. And interesting the

first scene you get with her shouting into the

megaphone. Yeah, it's a picture on the wall.

Oh, yeah Yeah, that's her grandfather. Yeah,

that's very reminiscent to someone we would have

seen possibly in the third movie Oh, yeah, go

Marshall Strickland. He shows up later. So that

was an interesting thing that I didn't notice

the first time I was looking through this but

But yeah, so we have to deal with Strickland's

sister. Yeah who at the moment just seems like

a clone of Strickland, just a, you know, get

off my lawn, you whippersnappers type of, you

know, hooligans or slackers or whatever you want

to call them. Yeah. Type person. So that's how

we get introduced to her. And she finds the 1931

newspaper, which Carl Sagan, who looks a lot

like Doc Brown, has been killed. Speaking of

the arsonist slain, Kid Tannen suspected. Yep

So that's kind of how this sets up we have something

that happened in 1930s that killed Doc Brown

and we have a tannin involved and we have Strickland

helping Marty so we got all our families, you

know all accounted for Yep, and Marty does his

hey, what's that trick and runs off with the

newspaper and she's like Where is it? She's like

Come back here you hooligan And then we have

Marty back in 1931. Dressed in some old clothes,

visiting Hill Valley, seeing what's good and

what happened with Doc Brown. And he runs into

the same person. Young Strickland. And now looking

a lot different since she's 50 years younger.

the cool thing about this adventure is that jennifer's

like oh no i'm done with that and he's kind of

glad she doesn't want to go because it's one

less thing he has to look after kind of a thing

like making sure nothing happens to her and their

future and yada yada yada so i don't mind that

jennifer's not on the time travel adventure at

all like we've had plenty of time travel adventures

with jennifer at this point um obviously we always

want her there you know at the beginning and

at the ending and kind of a thing to book in

the piece but she's not necessarily needed with

this and um yeah young strickland here she's

uh what's your opinion of carl sing and the stranger

who did what law enforcement wasn't able to do

She's very much a teetotaler, you know, like

no sin, no alcohol, no gambling, no smoking,

no anything. British should act perfectly. So

we get that right from the beginning here with

how she's interacting with Marty. And then Marty

goes to the jail to visit Carl Sagan before he

is killed. So he sees Doc Brown and says, hey,

you get killed. Great, Scott. So now they need

to figure out a way to get him out and how are

they gonna do that? But of course visiting the

young Doc Brown Before he's a doctor so they

visit young Emmett because they need his power

drill to get him to Break out Carl Sagan from

the jail older Doc Brown. Yeah and young Emmett

here. He's he's a law clerk and He has a subpoena

for Arthur McFly who is marty's grandfather yeah

so we got a lot of diverging things here going

on so he's got to convince uh you know he's got

to make sure that everything happens how it should

with doc brown so that he becomes the man of

science not the man of law he's got to protect

his grandfather mcfly he's got to make sure that

tannin still gets caught like he was supposed

to and uh he's got the the meddling uh strickland

who is watching and trying to be a journalist

during all of this So that's kind of how we're

set up here and obviously he also has to get

the older Doc Brown out of jail You know that

he has a partner in crime to help out this whole

thing so I Like this I think this is super fun.

This is basically Marty and Doc on some weird

adventure again It's kind of what I think slash

hope you had originally wanted like more marty

and doc less of like there's no george and lorraine

here so yeah yeah definitely another time period

that we haven't been to so you know let's go

back to the 30s and gangsters and you know um

prohibition and that type of stuff so it's interesting

that they chose a different time period to go

and then of course we get different ancestors

that we haven't been used to so very similar

to what we got in the movies where you were Going

to see the future people going to see the generation

in the past now. We're going to see two generations

in the past basically So I do find it interesting.

I think there's some elements of this story overall

that seem a little Like they are foreign to the

back to the future universe Okay But maybe that's

just me being Don't know if that's that's actually

true because there is some mature themes in the

back -to -the -future movies and there's some

some real things that happen but It seemed like

with the amount of and I guess this is also because

of the time period that we're in with the 30s

but the violence is Like stepped up a notch in

this one. Oh, yeah And I wasn't quite sure if

that really fit with the back -to -the -future

family -friendly type persona but i don't know

how you would not have it in the 30s and not

have some violence so yeah and see that's the

thing like in my mind unless they eventually

do like a back to the future animated series

comic this is not for this is for us this is

not for seven eight nine year old ten year old

eleven year old kids of this generation this

comic is for us that grew up with it yeah like

it's not for Like I pretty much can bet you if

I go into any comic shop in the state of Illinois

is you're not gonna have Illinois you're not

gonna have the back to the future issues in the

kids section I was just in a comic shop in Kentucky

this past week or whenever and I looked at the

kids section because it was right next to where

the Funko pops were and No back to the future

in that section so We're used to Marty and Doc

being able to solve things based off of science

science or talking to people or You know just

placing artifacts and different stuff and this

one you get Gun shooting and all kinds of other

craziness. So this is a little jarring at first

but we'll get Here so he's obviously introduced

He has to the first thing he tries to do is try

to solve everything by talking to both young

Doc Brown and young Marty's grandpa young Artie

Yeah, and and trying to prevent the whole subpoena

and and his grandpa going to jail but Kid Tannen

has one of his henchmen listening in on that

and it's gonna take care of that So we've created

a problem that nobody's aware of yet Yeah Kid

tannin really like that's the like Billy the

kid really seriously That's the way you're gonna

go with the name for the tannin character here.

I don't know. I I didn't really like Biff Griff

Mad dog, you know Beauregard, you know something

Yeah, that is what it is. I know it is what it

is, but it just does seem like it even fits the

30s Yeah, there was some crazy names like that

for gangsters and whatnot so I kind of get where

they're going with that. So then we divert to

Marty thinks he solved that problem, which he

hasn't, and now he goes to get the drill and

free Doc Brown from jail. Yep. So that happens,

he almost kills himself, but he gets Doc Brown

out with younger Doc Brown's electric drill,

gets him out of jail, and now we see Marty starting

to disappear. Yep. Marnie go bye bye So now we

got a great Scott question to end that volume

Yeah, it's a good setup. There's a good setup.

We got it was a very clear We've been introduced

to everybody that we need to know almost The

or at least the main the main people we got our

Marty's grandpa. We got young Doc Brown. We got

Strickland we got kid tanning. So we have all

our major players. Yeah so Start the next volume

with Marty disappearing Yep, Marty go like I

said Marty's disappearing counting beaten left

for dead. Yeah, so the newspaper has changed

instead of Carl Sagan dying now the accountant

has been Beating and left for dead. Of course

that accountant being his grandpa. Yeah, so they

got to figure out things so They are going to

go back and try again That's all they can do

is go back and try again, right? So now they

go right to the same part where they're meeting

at the pavilion And so now Marty is seeing Marty

Those moments and He's hearing that one of his

henchmen is on to him. So now he's got to make

sure that his grandpa does not go home. Yeah

so Now we have Marty introduces himself to the

grandpa and to Doc Brown get into the DeLorean

and get out of there. Yeah, he introduces himself

as some government agent or whatever. Like, okay

Marty, that's believable. So now the newspaper

has changed again to Saigon Escapes. So it looks

like everything is good, so let's go to 1986

and this is going to be the shortest Back to

the Future story of all time. Yep. so everything

looks good they're back in 1986 doc drops marty

off at his house drives off except his key is

not working to get in nope and there is four

keys needed to open this door anyway yeah that's

not good um So the Doc Brown that comes back

with him in 1986 here everything were more he's

like well everything looks okay Are you sure

pretty sure you want to come in? I? Loved him

Marty, but after that long -term direct interactions.

I've just felt with 1930s I feel it urgent that

I get over to the library and make sure there

were no unintended consequences Doc Brown like

Marty His entire look has changed like He looks

like The older non rejuvenated doc like before

he went but like but his whole design has changed

and I get it It's a different artist and it's

a different artist interpretation But it's almost

it's like we were talking earlier and like we've

been saying throughout these all these podcasts

that we've been doing on this series It's like

when Marty's appearance changes Did you notice

that or is that just me? I mean, I've noticed

a lot of the changes here. I didn't notice that

one specifically but It makes sense when you

bring it up. I guess I can see some of that and

again, I don't know if it's the fact they fact

or whatever assumption on my part that they don't

have the care the the actor licenses to do actual

likenesses or What it I'm not sure what it is

like Yeah, why there's different styles of different

artists Yeah, it's what it comes down to and

then you can't you know when you're drawing something.

It's not gonna be the same every single time

so But you think would be a little bit more consistent

than it has been yeah, maybe that's just me so

we come back to Marty opening the door to his

house and His dad's in a wheelchair Yep, what

the heck happened there and we got this cliff

riff And some other tannins attacking Marty with

baseball bats, golf clubs, and stuff like that.

Yeah. So, and then he finds out that he is in

Tannen Estates. So, something is not right about

this future. This is what I love about this.

This was a timeline with definitely too much

Tannen. Way too much! Yeah, we have Tannen Estates,

we have Griff, Cliff, Biff, and we have Tiff.

Tiff Tannen the girl yeah We have the Tannenville

mall which has six casinos 15 bars and eight

gentlemen clubs in it That's a little bit of

a craziness and that's a little much Doc Brown

flies in Well before Doc Brown flies in we also

get kid Tannen. Yeah, he is still alive and well

here apparently so not good and Basically Doc

Brown picks them up and they fly off in a way

because obviously something is not right. Tanneville,

I think I've seen that movie before. We both

have. Yep. And back to 1931. Yep, back to 1931

and Edna and all of that and... Oh, I didn't

like where this was going. I liked it, I liked

the story, but I'm just like, oh no. No, no,

no, please leave the mantle doc. Don't don't

look back at her. Go see Frankenstein. Go see

Frankenstein So we get back to where little Strickland's

here with Little doc Brown we get introduced

to the only character that I think we hadn't

been yet, which is Trixie Trotter The the musician

entertainer etc. So we got to figure out what

happened what went wrong here And how are we

gonna fix it? So his main thing here is he's

got to make sure that Trixie turns in Kid Tannen

So that he gets arrested and none of this other

nonsense with Tannenville happens So the goal

here is to make sure that the cop still does

his job Trixie still does her job and everything

else fixes itself Exactly, but half the time

everything doesn't ever fix itself, right? Everything

picks itself and then something else goes wrong

usually Usually this is back to the future after

all right, and then this situation what goes

wrong is Kid Tana and Tenchman recognizes Marty

Marty So because his mustache is not on anymore

cuz Trixie slapped it off and he recognizes the

face So now we have Kid Tana and gonna take matters

into his own hands and go take care of business

And so he's just about to kill Marty or do something

there with Marty and Trixie and this guy comes

running up with a stick of dynamite That was

probably about the most contrived part of the

episode or the volume like this we needed a way

to get out of this so we're just gonna randomly

have some guy come up with a stick of dynamite

distract kid kid goes running off and We can

continue our story. I guess I don't know it was

that was probably my least favorite part of the

whole thing Yeah, it was a little strange So

you didn't tell me where to put the dynamite

like oh like stupid kinks like it's kind of like

It's kind of like Muggsy and it's it's the only

like okay boss. I'll do it boss. Oh wait I didn't

do it right boss kind of a thing Yeah, but it

was just kind of like out of nowhere like they

just it was convenient for the story for that

to happen. I guess yeah So So that allows them

to get out of the situation Of what you know

with the with kid so that helps kind of turn

the page to the next part Yep And we come to

find out that it was Edna the whole time I think

Well, yeah, yep Don't know find out right at

that moment, but yeah, we find out that that

she was the one that was that was doing that

so so then the officer is going to arrest kid

tannin, but then kid tannin pulls out his machine

gun and The Hales fire and brimstone bullets

go flying towards the our heroes here. Oh, yeah

so As interesting then we got to rely back on

young Doc Brown who has another mention that's

gonna help you already had his electric drill

now He's gonna have a little remote control power

car type thing that he is gonna fly into kid

tanning So that works I guess so that happens

the cops arrest kid tanning everything's good

uh... even arty and tricks he showed up uh...

uh... but that was kinda weird because you know

that's not uh... we can't have arty getting involved

with trixie cuz that's not - wait sure we can

well we don't know that yet uh... i knew that

right away but we're not supposed to know that

yet it was kind of obvious like i don't think

his grandma's gonna be edna strickland so yeah

so so then we have doc brown looking at his ticket

and reminiscing about when he went and saw Frankenstein

and they're seeing the younger version there

except for he doesn't go in and the ticket starts

to disappear turn around we have to go back we

have a problem we have a problem so another another

thing where you fix everything but something

else goes wrong yep and the end it ends with

it crashes the luring flying luring crashes into

first citizen brown done done done all right

yes sir so that is where we leave off here where

we're getting involved in a new time period here

again yeah so what do you think of all of this

so far because this is vastly different i mean

this is still marty and doc on adventures and

things but this is vastly different from the

what the stories are doing in the in the ongoing

itself Yeah, it is vastly different like I said

I think there is a couple times where we have

some contrivances where they just have to throw

in something because the story needs it to and

it doesn't necessarily make as much sense and

Like I said the violence was a little bit jarring

at first But it's interesting it's interesting

I like that we get you know more of interaction

with the different ancestors or family members

and some of that type of stuff But definitely

very different between the first Volume or whatever

of this and the rest of it. Yeah Yeah, it definitely

takes a turn here when we go from here on forward

with the actual citizen Brown compared to what

we had prior. Yeah It's fun. I don't know if

I like it as much as what we've had with the

ongoing But maybe that's just because it's a

little different and I'm not used to it yet.

Yeah And the good thing about this is it's a

one -shot miniseries. It's a five -issue miniseries.

That's the great thing about IDW, when they have

a property like this, you can read a miniseries

that ties into the ongoing, but you don't necessarily

have to be worried. They may mention at some

point in the future about... these events happen

in Citizen Brown go read that and they'll have

a little annotation there that says that but

other than like if nobody had read the ongoing

at this point you could pick this up and be okay

if you wanted to yeah for sure yeah you wouldn't

need anything else this would be a standalone

thing for you yeah which is a good thing that

it does both jobs it ties in and it stands alone

as well Yeah, I mean it well it doesn't tell

you in a hundred percent because it's an alternate

timeline, right? Yeah with some stuff that we're

seeing in the other versions Possibly, but it's

still interesting nonetheless that we kind of

have this here. So I Don't know what parts he

was talking about when he's talking about correcting

mistakes that they made the first time around

I'd be interested to hear more about what do

you what? Yeah What mistakes that he felt was

in the movie that he was fixing through this.

But we'll have to wait. Or maybe I just need

to rewatch the third movie, which I don't want

to do. And then really look at the end of this

to see how it goes. But anyway, so we are in

Citizen Oneville now. Yes. So the next part starts

off here with an interesting... Dilemma here.

You could be a citizen plus It's like Uncle Sam,

but it's Doc Brown Very creepy old looking version

of Doc Brown Yeah, for sure. So that's where

we start off here with him crashing into a billboard

that shouldn't be there and the DeLorean and

Marty are up there Jennifer is down there in

her multicolored punk rock looking Community

service style I'm like wow it's a really really

punk rockin version of punky Brewster community

service style huh yeah I mean she's obviously

looking much different there's a few other things

that he notices right off the get -go that look

different first of all being the billboard that's

not supposed to be there second would be Jennifer

third would be there's a wall surrounding hello

Valley yeah with a guy it's kind of like the

safe place logo but it's a guy standing out right

with a dot like the logo We all know what that's

supposed to be. We'll get to that later. So he

has to rig one of the hover wheels to get over

the wall and then we have our look at the future

of Hill Valley. This is Hill Valley? Yup. Be

content. Everything is under control. Not under

control like in a good way. I do like that Marty

has learned from Doc. Marty Movie Marty probably

never would have done that So I do like that

and I love how because this is an alternate timeline

that wait did she just call me an ex oh Yeah,

so he also learns that they're not together And

then of course he sees things right away. First

of all, he's being talked to by the police officer

Cuz he's not in the proper uniform. Yeah So he's

not wearing polo and it's supposed to be polo

day and then he runs into another person he knows

Biff Tannen at your service Nice looking polite

Biff Tannen, which Marty is confused about But

Biff explains it's because he's been enrolled

in citizen plus program and now he can't even

think about doing anything bad So Marty says

Sounds like you were brainwashed, basically.

So then he mentions his mom and dad. Marty says,

oh, my mom and dad, I got to go see what's going

on there. So he goes to his old house and sees

his brother and sister, you know, all pulled

up in their proper uniform, acting weird. He

sees his dad, who is basically a peeping Tom.

He's like big brother himself. Yeah. watching

the whole Hill Valley and reporting anything

bad that goes on. I will say this design for

George is very unique. like I like the like when

like Marty first drops in that next panel where

it's the two of them close up where George says

these videos will show the world what it's like

in a town where people can't drink or smoke or

or make out in public making out in public is

illegal question mark like the the look on George's

face and the design of his character here is

really like I don't think I've ever seen Design

for George McFly be more interesting than this

version of him at this point Yeah, and while

George McFly is peeping in on the town. He sees

his wife Who has a flask in her? Cleaning supplies

not again So apparently she's been drinking.

He's gonna call the police Marty talks him out

of doing that And basically says you know hey

when it's family sometimes you got to give them

the benefit of the doubt So he volunteers to

go check out his mom Himself and see what's going

on. Maybe they miss saw what it was or something

like that. Oh, no Yes truck was out back Instead

he gets a golf cart. Yep This is so not a hot

rod His dad calls it a hot rod. It's a golf cart.

He shows up and his mom definitely is chugging

down the alcohol. Oh, yeah uh... run it punk

jennifer again we're gonna call her punk jennifer

in this episode absolutely at least in this part

of the time line yeah right right so he's seeing

that obviously this is a weird thing and nobody's

allowed to break the rules etc. he needs to find

a way to talk to doc brown and get to the bottom

of this what better way than to kiss his ex make

out in public Jennifer and then here come the

officers which is Marshall Strickland Prefect

Strickland. Yeah, so they they take Marty off

to see Doc Brown It looks like a somebody that

worked for Hitler or something like that. He

actually looks like a cross between a Really

really bad judge doom in a green outfit and Don't

know what else This is not Lubick from Masters

of the universe at all. Yeah, so So he goes to

see Doc Brown, which is kind of like this Wizard

of Oz type thing he's going down these long hallways

and and trying to find the the man behind the

the curtain so to speak so Doc Brown's interviewing

him and he's confused because Marty's been so

perfect and now all of a sudden he's acting out

It's kind of going back and forth Marty's not

getting anywhere until He shows Doc Brown a picture

the picture of themselves in in the earlier part

of the timeline Yeah, so finally Doc Brown sees

it and says holy or excuse me great Scott Because

that's me and that's you so Now Doc Brown kind

of like snaps right with him and he's back to

somewhat knowing that there's something up So

he's on with Marty McFly. They're gonna go check

things out Because there's a time machine out

there and Doc Brown's interested in it. But meanwhile

citizen Wilson Yeah, it is a is seeing things

and reporting back to somebody Somebody that

that Citizen one has left the building So we

go to Doc Brown who has the DeLorean DeLorean

is crashed, but he sees that there's a mr. Fusion

in there. He sees a flux capacitor He thinks

he can repair it until boom Shot with a dart

the flux capacitor. I had dreams about that design

for years. You don't say that's what I was alluding

to earlier the logo for Citizen Brown is obviously

a mock -up for a yes weird futuristic men's room

sign of the flux capacitor So he gets shots with

a dart from none other than his wife Edna Strickland,

Edna Brown, I guess now. So yeah, and we see

that she is the person that Wilson was calling

and she is the person that is kind of pulling

the puppet strings, so to speak. Oh, yeah. Controlling

that citizen one. So. Yeah, so brainwashing people

is fine for her, she says, absolutely and without

hesitation, it will make a better world. So.

That's her vision of a perfect society. I guess.

We end on Doc, you know, hooked up to this brainwashing

machine. Oh boy, this might be the evilest villain

we've had. Yeah, it's up there This is similar

to this picture of Doc Brown on the strapped

into the bed and you know what the thing on his

head is very reminiscent to When we saw him earlier

in one of the other volumes when he was being

lobotomized basically, yep So it's it's equally

disturbing. Oh, yeah very much so so that was

the end of that volume ends with him strapped

in And we're gonna pick up the next volume with

Marty coming to he because he was also tranquilized

Yeah. And he is at the Citizen Plus Center with

Jennifer, not knowing what he's going to do.

Nope, doesn't know. So he knows they're being

watched. So he says, let's give them a show.

Yeah. And starts making out with her again. Mm

hmm. And that's when Marty's parents bust in.

We oops. So, obviously what he said about giving

the family the benefit of the doubt worked because

his dad and mom have come in to give him the

benefit of the doubt and see what's happening

and she's been tasing people. So, that's good.

I was wondering how they were going to get out

of this. So, this is a way out, I guess. Having

the parents break in like this. So, now he's

off with the taser to go save Doc Brown again.

Yep. So, he goes in. Edna's in there about to

run her experiments with another lackey and He

does the hey, what's that over there turn the

lights off thing? He's um takes Doc Brown and

heads to safety Supposedly Oh, no, I loved it.

I thought it was hilarious. I thought it was

fun This is the character. Oh my god She is scary

She's very scary that is for sure so basically

yeah she is a morality police times a thousand

yeah so so they have to find an escape they go

to Doc Brown's second laboratory aka his house

So that's where they're at. They're gonna try

to repair the DeLorean so they come up with this

whole plan He's gonna fix the DeLorean Marty's

gonna go outside and wait and in a few minutes

He will show up outside to pick Marty up. He

doesn't want Marty there because he doesn't want

to cause any more Disturbances in the time continuum,

etc. Etc. Yeah, so it's just Marty and his uncle

outside Yeah, and this in this timeline the house

never actually burned down. So we get to see

the house Yeah, Marty and Uncle Joey. Uncle Joey

Baines. Oh boy. Have we ever seen him before?

In the comic? In anything. They've alluded to

him in the alternate timeline. Oh, kids. here's

the cake your uncle joey didn't get out of jail

like no we've never actually got you see him

seen him but he's very much mentioned as you

know he's still in jail uncle jailbird joey he's

mentioned a lot and i believe that i was telling

you this last time either on air or off air i

believe we're gonna get into him more with the

ongoing with volume four and five because volume

four is called hard time volume five is called

time served so we're gonna get more of uncle

jailbird joey gotcha so he's on the side of doc

and and marty's helping him out not gonna say

anything because um doc brown basically says

that it's citizen two is is off a rocker and

and follow his orders etc etc so like a good

obedient person he's gonna do that until of course

edna shows up and zaps him with her with her

stun stick yeah that was and with her alongside

her she has a biff tannin which is carrying a

bunch of dynamite of course biff is carrying

dynamite so that's where we figure out that she's

the one that burned down the speakeasy so that's

where that's revealed and then finally even though

it's late the delorean finally shows up and hits

edna and knocks her stun stick out of her hand

um and it's doc brown with a beard Mm -hmm bearded

Doc Brown shows up, but something's wrong with

the time settings. That's why he was late So

there's it's fixed, but it's not perfect Marty

gets in there and off they go Off they go this

weekend Hill Valley Science Expo December 18th

to 20th 1931 whoops That can't be right, right

So they're in 1931 just not quite the same time

that in the they wanted to be because they wanted

to be there earlier in the year Mm -hmm. So that's

right. There's a Cars of the Future exhibit.

So they parked the DeLorean there. That was convenient.

And then we have bearded Doc Brown and Marty

trying to figure out how they can stop Citizen

One from happening, basically. Yeah, really.

So they run into young Doc Brown, who is infatuated

with Edna at this point. so they have their work

cut out for them because he is not going to be

reasoned with he is head over heels in love and

they're not going to convince him to go see frankenstein

yeah so and like old doc is like oh there's got

to be a way there's got to be a way that it gets

fixed without you know going bad and yada yada

yada and marty basically says you know Well in

my timeline, you've got a wife two kids and look

we just got to do this. I'm sorry Yeah, and he

says you know doc. Where are you going? Difference

doesn't make Martin the plan you plan to erase

me from resistance hurting doc like that It was

like a punch to the gut and worse. I knew I wasn't

even done yet Yep, so he's got to figure out

a way to do something. So he runs into Trixie

and talks her into getting back at Edna, since

Edna was very mean to her after the whole incident

with Kid Tannen, etc. So she's gonna come onto

Doc Brown, make Edna jealous, and that will end

the relationship. Yeah, I mean she didn't even

really she needed convincing early on but once

Marty told her who it was she's like Okay, sure.

Whatever you need. Yeah Yeah, so they immediately

do that. She comes in and acts like she's pregnant

with Doc's kids And if they'd had a fling and

it gets pissed off slaps him cries runs off in

the corner Doc goes up to the clock tower and

cries basically doesn't crack but So they have

a conversation there And he challenges him on

one of his inventions, which kind of diverts

Doc's attention away to, hey, that's one of my

inventions. It works. I can prove it. Right.

So he's going to do that. Meanwhile, Edna is

sitting on a bench crying. But of course, old

bearded Doc has to come try to be nice to her.

Exactly. Causes the complication heading into

the next issue. Oh, yeah. So very much a complication.

I love the final cover here. I assume that's

both Einstein and Copernicus That's funny, so

the final this is the final issue of this miniseries

here Basically the entire according to the cover

the entire town is burning down Yeah, it looks

like it's burning down slash disappearing. Whatever.

So we are Going to 1982 All right, so everything

in 1931 seemingly is fine So we go to 1982 Which

is weird because why 82 yeah really I didn't

understand that one. So they've been working

on stuff and also I don't know it's Anyway, we'll

get back to that. So One of them is at the expo

The cars the future exhibit which is from 1931

Right, which it doesn't tell us we've gone back

there, but no Anyways, a little bit of time travel

jumping around here. So So anyway, so he is back

with the car That's at the expo Doc's trying

to fix the couple things that are wrong with

it, etc And they're talking about where they're

gonna go and the time travel etc. Etc your life

in 1986 What happens to me? It's an Edna. Here's

all of this. Yeah so That didn't help because

she she recognized the old bearded Carl Sagan

Yeah, she'd seen before so now she's on to them.

She's there and she has a gun and she basically

Tells them that she is taking the time machine

Pretty much. Yeah, so they try to play it off

like it's not a time machine. She doesn't believe

it So she basically has the gun shoots Doc Brown

You know and then gets in the car and speeds

away Okay, so there's one character flip here

on Edna. She's super mad super pissed throughout

the whole thing Until she shoots him and I didn't

mean to he wouldn't So I mean she does say she

has to get out of there, but I do think that's

a character shift for her a little bit I don't

think she's super evil second citizen Brown at

this point. I Don't know but yeah Yeah, I can

see that it's a little bit out of character.

It seems like yeah So the remorse anyway, cuz

normally she would just be a cold -hearted bitch

Right, right. Well, it's hard to you know the

1930 version. It's hard to say I'm she is the

one that burned down the speakeasy She is definitely

got ulterior motives and she's not she's one

to bend the rules even though she doesn't want

anybody else to bend the rules So then we see

bearded Doc Brown disappearing. Yeah which Is

I guess a good way since he wish number one he

was shot Yeah, so that they don't have to deal

with the repercussions of him being shot because

he disappears from the timeline anyways, you

know, so and Marty pulls doc Yeah, they're all

Western Union writes a letter sends it to himself

and sends it to doc in the future and then boom

Here's the DeLorean with doc Absolutely so This

is when we get to the cover version though because

he basically gets there and then Great Scott.

Yep California historical marker former site

of the Hill Valley settlement burned to the ground

and abandoned April 3rd 1876 the exact date that

Edna wanted to go back to the date that Sin entered

Hill Valley. And Doc doesn't really know Edna.

He says, oh, I knew her once when I was younger.

How on earth did Edna get ahold of my time machine?

So she stole it, she went back, et cetera, et

cetera. What? Another great Scott moment. They

were real clear about the date, so they set it

to go back to stop. So we leave 1931, go back

to 1876, and we enter. Third movies setting So

back in the back in the West So they they get

back and just happen to have that mine available

There's a minor that's tied up it says that Edna

was on the warpath You know, so she is she is

laying the groundwork to burn down the saloon

and stops in from entering hill valley what i

love about the saloon image where it's like thankfully

doc had taken my asking him to duplicate the

delorians literally he made an exact like that

page there bo's saloon like no one's gonna know

what that is until like a few panels or pages

later because I was like, okay, so it's just

some guy's saloon. And then we realize whose

saloon it is. It's a Tannen establishment. Yeah,

sir. So she is about to burn it down. She's got

the gunpowder, et cetera, et cetera. What in

the Sam Hill are you people doing next to my

saloon? So we have Mr. Tannen here. It's going

to right this wrong right away. But before he's

able to kill him. Here comes Marshall Strickland,

you know From the picture we saw earlier. Oh,

yeah happy here So now we got them all fighting

because the Marshall wants one thing the Tannins

want the other thing Obviously Marty and and

Doc want to survive Saying that they're gonna

take them to jail All this other stuff and then

boom, you know and the skirmish the gun goes

off hits the gunpowder Everybody is looking like

crazy Marty kicks a hole Barrel of beer onto

it and stops the thing from blowing up. Yeah

So just proves that tanning waters his stuff

down. Yeah, so in the skirmish doc Marty and

Edna all Bustle off back to the mine get in the

DeLorean and boom right back to 1931. Yep so

Edna turned herself in and Then judge Brown Doc's

dad replace the alien Albert mains on the judging

panel and Does not give the first prize to Doc

Brown Billy Mills That's okay. I was really hoping

they would have said Billy Mays But you know

I get it. It's okay, but instead Doc's dad says

how proud he is of him, and why don't we go see

Frankenstein? So that will help that. Meanwhile,

Artie... And Trixie... Abodes to Trixie, but

that's going to put Marty in a state of shock

because that's going to ruin his family. He's

going to disappear. Uh huh. But she actually

is Sylvia. So, because Trixie is just a stage

name. You're Sylvia, but you're so hot. Tell

me you saw that coming. Yeah, Marty has a weird...

Parental affixation with the females in his family

You know, I yeah, but I think it was fairly obvious

that Trixie was gonna be somebody else at the

beginning like absolutely Yeah, absolutely. So

that was obvious, but it was still nice because

it didn't get technically revealed until until

here until the very end Yeah, right, right. So

then they go back to the car show even though

their car is supposed to get first place they

fly off and the guy that saw it just decides

that he's seeing things and keeps drinking yeah

so they show up back in their time at the diner

here and who do we see but a alternate version

of old edna yeah the nice version yeah she's

doing much better now she's not this i don't

know if the earlier version the original version

that he stole the paper from was a nice version

but at least this one isn't a more nicer version

than any of the ones that we've seen before yeah

so then he got a package Of course, there's a

know And that's what he was writing in the beginning

of of the of the trade here. Yeah is is all of

that So that's it. What did you think? I mean

the intricacies that are put into this story

I think is great It almost makes me want to play

the actual game at this point Just to go through

it to see how it plays out like you as the player.

I think that would be really cool I love how

they, at the end of the comic, I love how they

recreated the old scene of him in his clothes

with his arm behind his back. I thought that

was great. There's a very cool alternate cover

towards the end, too. Right. Excuse me. Of them

in the saloon. And they're playing roulette or

whatever, and that is the closest that Marty

looks like to Michael J. Fox out of any comic

I've seen. Oh, yeah orange vest on that looks

directly like Michael J Fox. Yep So absolutely

my favorite alternate cover and it's the actual

I made it be the by head Steve make it be the

pot art I I had to go with the future DeLorean

thing. Yeah, the two -part DeLorean cover. Oh

my god. I love that So yeah a little different

obviously not in the same, you know version of

the ongoing that we have also I guess apparently

talks a little bit about some different things

there. I'm assuming that saying that it corrected

some errors from the third movie, but we need

some somebody Yeah, back to the future Lord to

fill me in on that one Yeah, I think we need

to get an interview with either John Barber for

this or Bob Gale himself I mean, I've interviewed

John before we talked about Transformers and

gem at the time. It was a couple years ago I'm

pretty sure I could get him back on to talk about

this and other stuff. He's got going on So that

shouldn't be an issue But it's a fun side story.

Oh, yeah, very fun side story, and then I think

that's the cool thing like How else are you going

to like the movies are what they are? There's

no changing that They are the stories that they

are they are where the lore comes from so You

know The ongoing is what the ongoing is and the

ongoing can tell whatever story it wants to tell

and having little side mini series like this

tell another specific story that Exists, but

doesn't exist within the same scope of the it's

like It's like Bob said in that letter. It's

like it is canon, but it isn't canon and Yada,

yada, yada. This is the benefit of having time

travel being part of your story is you can do

anything you want and say it happened in some

alternate timeline or whatever. Definitely a

cozy little story device there that you can use

however you wish. I think it is fun. I like getting

back to the different generations and the families

lines and having Tannins involved and Strickland's

involved and Doc and Marty and all that type

of stuff. It's good seeing that, but a little

bit better than seeing the clones that we got

in the ongoing. ongoing goes back to doing some

more stuff like this so yeah I think it will

I'm pretty like I said I pretty much know that

it kind of will because I've not read ahead in

the book but when I bought volume four I have

not bought volume five yet I will eventually

because we're not covering those until later

in the year for the ongoing when I bought volume

four I read the description of it and like I

said earlier in this episode it's talking about

Gilbert Joey and Whatever other adventures Marty

and Doc are gonna have nice so but I think I

like this one enough I think I'd give it like

a again a three and a half four out of five I'll

give it a four and a half. I absolutely loved

it I thought it was great like there were parts

of it like the whole the whole evil Edna thing

didn't really care for that, but I guess that's

part of the story of She wasn't evil. She is

evil. She is this she is that she isn't this

she isn't that that kind of thing back and forth

and it's interesting because we got two Things

that we talked about in consecutive weeks with

older people being the villains. Yeah, I'm not

the professor and so yeah, and the next week

The finale of our back to the future coverage

for now episode 304 is Biff to the future so

it's all about how Biff got his rise to power

this pretty much is a direct comic version of

1985 a from back to the future to So that is

interesting It's gonna be very fun because it

as far as I can tell because I've started reading

it But I haven't finished it as of this recording

as far as I can tell it's all About biff like

to this point in the story. I have not seen anything

with Marty anything with it's just biff So it's

gonna be really really cool, and hopefully you'll

like it more than you like Jurassic before didn't

like Jurassic It was not a big thing although.

I did like that. We finally went back to Jurassic

world in this one kind of make a connection there

to the Jurassic Biff. But I'm worried about this

one because I'm not a big Biff fan. I'm not a

big fan of the Tannen family and all that. But

I know it's a crucial part of the story. So I

am interested to see how this ties in. I'll tell

you right now, if you haven't opened it up yet,

Jurassic Biff acts as a prologue to. Oh, Lord.

Yeah. All right. I'll give it a shot. I'll go

in with an open mind. Yeah. So. We'll see what
