ask the question, who is Marty McFly? This is
the third story arc in the series as it kicks
off with learning all about needles so join us
won't you as we talk about this trade from IDW.
Oh boy. So people might have noticed that the
pullback hasn't had an episode since 301 like
we haven't released anything because we're just
recording this now and that's fine, but My wife
Karen and I we go either zero Or we go a million
miles an hour and we've been going a million
miles an hour for the last Three or four months
out of the last eight or nine months that we've
known each other So yeah, it's you know, Mike
going a million miles an hour is a feat uh -huh.
Yeah Absolutely or for anybody well, you know,
there was that Nickelback song million miles
an hour, but anyway Everyone hates that band
apparently So yes volume three who is Marty McFly
I thought the premise of this was just great
I Think it's a good idea. I think it's something
that they haven't done yet kind of in the movies
or in any of the comics we've read so far as
far as somebody questioning their own identity
and If there's multiple versions of them out
there etc etc And this kicks off with, as I said
earlier, kicks off with the origin of Douglas
Needles. It was kind of interesting. I like that
they throw a line in there right away that one
of the people in the comic says. It's kind of
speaking to us as well. So as a nice little end
message, they say you got to start somewhere
if you want to get places. It was like, well,
we got to start with this if we want to understand
fully where we're going to be going eventually.
It was a little... Jarring to me when they go
from the needle story to the rest of it, right?
Like it was a jarring change in directions kind
of going from the first issue to the second issue
Yeah, like this all like issue 12 in volume 3
should have been Issue 12 should should have
been in volume 2 I think maybe or something like
is this picks up during like the this part of
the beginning part of the story before they do
the flashback in issue twelve in volume three
is where they should have it picks up where right
after words that uh... jennifer basically runs
him off the road any you know slams into an egg
crater a trucker is getting all over his face
so that's where this or something in between
that and when we're gonna go full on with the
marty story that i had to write a weird change
of gears yeah uh... in between there Don't know.
There's also a weird. There's a couple different
places in this volume that I have not noticed
in the other Comics that we've covered that the
writing is weird in a couple pages, and I don't
know how I'm supposed to read it I'll give you
an example from this one, but I don't think I've
come across that in Any of the other volumes
that we've been talking about it's on if you're
viewing the trade I guess the combined version.
It's on page 34 okay, I believe Yeah and the
bottom here so we have a discussion going on
between Marty and his dad All right, and his
dad says it's I'm gonna read exactly what is
written in the bubbles It says it's normal to
feel that way you are asking about feeling confident
You're not going to believe this Marty, but time
was your old man was something of a wimp Yeah
That doesn't make any sense written that way
it could be a Mistake there there are times that
the script from scripts to bubbling sometimes
things get Not put in gotcha. So is I don't think
it's necessarily John or Bob's John Barber or
Bob Gale's writing I think maybe what I mean
it on what you're transcribing it into the bubble
They couldn't have it say but there was a time
when your old man exactly yeah but it just says
but time was yeah what is that supposed to say
yeah and then just being getting my piggy parts
out of the way first on page 30 if you're viewing
it the same way the last frame marty and and
um and jennifer are having a conversation at
the diner And she's kind of getting mad because
he's asking questions and she's questioning whether
he remembers her how they met and things like
that, et cetera, et cetera. In the last frame,
she says, you don't remember how we met. Marty
has no face. Yeah. I don't know if that's supposed
to be some type of like a distinctive choice
for like emotions like he's got a like he's speechless
or something like that, but he literally has
no nose. Yeah. Again, I think that's an artist
rendition. Just to run down the creative on this
really quickly. Story by John Barber and Bob
Gale. Script by Barber. Art by Emma Viseli. Those,
specifically you, who may not know Emma Viseli,
she did an Arc of the Gem comic. I think she
did... was it... volume 2's arc anyway she did
an arc of the of the idw gem series and that
art was really cool but yeah her style is slightly
different than what we've seen so far uh... and
really outside of that though i mean outside
of that specific one where he has no face and
she arrived here but the face i thought the art
in this one overall was way more consistent than
what we've got an absolutely yeah no it absolutely
is that's a little bit of a research is the same
person throughout the whole that yup exactly
uh... shaw leon letters uh... series that is
done by tom waltz who also writes uh... uh...
friday w with the team t uh... book series uh...
and then you know colors pretty much on all of
it is done by jose lewis rio uh... except for
part one who is done by esther's so goreiro i'm
probably butchering the hell out of that name
but i'm sorry so yeah that's the creative uh...
once again a letter from bob gale basically just
kind of saying the the inspiration for the story
and the you know the thought of how it came about
things like that which is very cool And then,
as I said earlier, we dive into the whole origin
of needles. Yeah, it's definitely an interesting
way to start. Like I said, it does pick up fairly
well from where the last one ended. And we haven't
got a lot on needles before, so it is interesting
to kind of see needles. younger version of himself,
etc. It's a character that hasn't been explored
as much as a lot of the other ones, so... Well,
you know, if you're like us, and you've spent
the last 30 plus years of your life being a fan
of the films, or a fan of the animated series,
or whatever, specifically a fan of the films,
the three films, Needles was basically Marty's
version of Biff, okay? He was his bully kind
of a thing and Needles was only ever shown in
various scenes. He wasn't ever really given because
there's no The movies aren't about needles the
movies are about Marty the movies are about doc
so Taking the time here to tell this story is
what I appreciate for these creators and again
specifically Bob Gale because You've got a guy
who worked on the movie who can, you know, bring
these ideas to life and all of that and it's
just, it's so well done. It really is. And it's
one of those... Needles as a child seemed like
he was bipolar. Yeah. Like it seems like you're
dealing with two different people because he's
like all quiet and nice and then he is all like...
I know they explain why and kind of get into
the meaning behind how he acts why he does but
Yeah, it was like every other frame. You didn't
know if you were getting like the nice needles
or this crazy one. Mm -hmm But yeah, I appreciate
that they kind of spent some time looking at
one of these more Overlooked characters, maybe
I guess you could say yeah So obviously he's
introduced as the new kid at school Marty is
tasked with showing him around kind of the typical
trope there of the new kid and getting paired
up with somebody right and That goes not so well
Not so well first day needles pukes on him Yeah,
you I've never even heard of that or seen that
of somebody actually puking like not not Like,
maybe on your feet or something of that nature.
He literally pukes on his outstretched arms.
Like, into his hands. It's gross. I don't want
to assume this, but I'm going to. I assume he
did that on purpose. Like, we see him cough in
the very beginning when the teacher's first introducing
him, but like... Know where the heck that was
gonna lean then all of a sudden as soon as Marty
stretches out You know not you know nice to meet
you. You know I'll be glad to show you you're
not glad, but you know I'll show you around and
then Right okay, so is that is he have a cold
is he sick or did he just do that on purpose?
Is he nervous from the first day jitters or what's
going on? But I mean I've had first day jitters
on stuff folks, but I've never in school specifically
I've been to very, I had been to very, I have
been to a lot of very different schools over
my young educated life and I never puked on the
first day at any of them. No, no, not at all.
And then of course we have Needles who then tries
to make it look like Marty Pete himself. Yeah.
So that's where we get the first switch. So he's
he's like, oh, I'm nervous. I'm upset. I'm throwing
up and then I'm going to make a joke out of it
and make it look like you peed on your pants.
Yeah. And obviously he has a decent reason for
saying that because he wanted to shift attention
away from him and not be known as the kid that
puked on the first day and make Marty be known
as the kid who peed himself. But but I mean,
he puked right in the middle of the hallway.
So there was more than one person that saw that.
It wasn't like he puked in the bathroom. I don't
think yeah. No he puked in the hallway Yeah,
so that was kind of interesting and then they
go on a trip to Marty's music store Yeah And
then he shows shows needles the guitar that he
wants and they talk a little bit about his band
and then stuff like that And then of course needles
does the flip again So he was with him being
nice going, you know talking to him and learning
more about him Marty decided to take him with
him And now all of a sudden needles buys his
guitar out from under him. Yeah and he's like
Marty's like you need an amp for an electric
guitar. Oh, yeah, right. I forgot to bring it
Like I Don't think it's bipolar Think it's just
It's almost like psychotic. It's like yeah, that's
that's what it is because like he It's like he's
planting seeds for the future or something or
whatever where it's like He'll be all calm and
whatever and then he'll get an idea to one up
Marty and this is This is really looking at Needles
and Marty's quote -unquote friendship, relationship,
character, relationship, whatever you want to
call it, from a slightly different aspect because
in the movies Needles always gets the one -up
and now it's kind of like Marty doesn't get a
one -up here at all like because Marty's a better
person like he's not gonna go for that revenge
stuff. Right. You know, but... Feel like the
difference was during this time period. It seems
like Marty was more Accepted he was more in the
in crowd. Yeah needles was the outsider whereas
when we see them interact later on You know needles
is always the more intimidating the more He has
more group of friends around him etc. Whereas
Marty is always kind of off on his own Yeah,
it's a little bit of a different dynamic and
and needles does a number of different things
here to kind of display that Tendency that's
coming up later, you know, he takes buys a guitar
out from under him He tries to take over his
band by having them all come over to his nice
house. Yeah Does the whole trying to egg Doc
Brown's house? Yeah, so you kind of get that
mischief that rebellious part of needles right
out of the gate Yeah, absolutely and of course
Marty's friends are like oh my god look at all
the stuff He had you know just like anybody would
be you know right and the needles goes and says
something You know like the Douglas needles in
the hot sauce and one of Marty's friends just
looks at him Marty and he's like I know Yeah,
his friends are not into it I mean they they
have all the stuff and whatnot, but they're not
they don't like needles right off the bat So
Marty's actually the one standing up for him
But then of course needles over here is a discussion
that they're talking about not liking him etc.
So that kind of pushes him over the edge We get
the final we get the point where needles takes
his hat off And he doesn't have the long hair
anymore like he had throughout the rest of it.
He's got the the mohawk thing going So that's
kind of where we see the true needles show up
for the first time. And just a couple more bounces
back and forth. They're talking like they're
going to be nice again, et cetera, et cetera.
Marty's saying, hey, I think they're overreacting,
et cetera, et cetera. And then needles immediately
makes it look like they're fighting in front
of a big group. So it's just going back and forth.
And then we go right back to. Needles as the
adults in 1986 or the teenage or whatever you
want to call it. Yeah Being questioned by the
police, of course So That's interesting and then
it it's kind of weird because it flashes back
to that then it goes right back to Marty practicing
with the band again and this is where I think
it was the jarring kind of like this last little
bit because he's practicing with the band and
then he's talking in the future with jennifer
again and it's just like i don't know it was
it was a weird transition there yeah there are
times like when it when it transitions from like
the scene with marty and his parents in the future
when what is it his dad or his mom says you know
kids like what is it that she says this is after
now this is before they have the fight This is
before Doug hears all the stuff that they kind
of go back and forth with it. I have a sick sense
when it comes to kids who are no good. Some kids
are just bad seizes. Dad says, anyway Marty,
I don't want you spending too much time with
Doug kind of a thing. It's not necessarily the
future, it's still the past, because it's still
Marty at that age, and then it's kind of like
a next day kind of a thing. And that's where
you were saying, but he was sticking up for needles,
like giving him the benefit of the doubt, and
then they're at school again. That's where we
have the whole Mohawk thing come in. And it goes
back to... Like you said the the present day
with needles on the phone like he's like copper
I get my one phone call your parents You know
your mom's out of town and Lord knows where your
dad is these days All right, and that's one thing
we should talk about young needles brought up
the fact of His parents are divorced and because
of that they the way they fight over him is they
basically buy him everything that he wants Or
you know that they basically buy his love essentially
And it seems like needles is one of the very
very Many latchkey kids of the 80s because it
seems like like I didn't see his parents either
one of his parents whether They're divorced or
not didn't see them at the house at all and you
know during that scene like it was just him at
his house, right? So then it's kind of going
into this thing when they go they flash back
to the band and Marty's talking with the band
and Jennifer etc. And that's kind of where it
goes back to the conversation that he's having
in 1986 with Jennifer about remembering the first
time You know, how they met and some of their
childhood, et cetera. So it's kind of them living
that in the past and them talking about it in
the future. And then it kind of goes into the
series of pages where Marty is questioning his
memories and what he's lived versus other Marty's
have lived. Yeah, because the yeah, you're splitting
them up. But yeah, because. The end of needles
is, you know, because all you ever been is a
chicken. Once I'm out, you better watch your
back needles. You've been playing the same note
way too long. It's time to get a new haircut.
No hard feelings. The issue that the needles
issue ends there and we get into who is Marty
McFly part one. Right. So this yeah. So I don't
like. As soon as I s - at the end of an issue,
as soon as I see, like, an alternate cover, I'm
like, oh, okay, that's the end. That means that
a new issue is starting. So... I didn't see it
as two... stories that were intertwining. Like,
it's - like, Who Is Marty McFly Parts 1 starts
with the band stuff. So it's the - it's the Marty
McFly story now. It's not the Needle story anymore.
Yeah, but it's still put together in a book form
where they're all supposed to somewhat go together
like yeah, so that's what it was just it's and
that's It was a combination of that, but it's
also a combination of like the first I don't
know like eight or nine pages of the second of
this first volume of who is Marty McFly? Because
he's bouncing all over the place like he's talking
to Jennifer then he's talking to his parents
then he's talking to the priest and then like
it was just a bunch of like weird and Yeah, and
it was weird to have that whole needles thing
and then have nothing to do with that for me
So that was kind of just the big difference there
was it's it's put together as one entity Even
if they were released in different, you know
issues or volumes or whatever, you know So it
was just a little bit strange there But it is
now we get into the crux of you know Marty dealing
with Alternate Marty's and trying to come to
terms with that in his head And that's kind of
an interesting aspect that we've never seen really
talked about so much. Yeah, absolutely. And Emma
Viseli did that perfectly. Once we get to the
alternate Marty's later, like after, you know,
I think it's after the second part of the third
part of the story here. Like the third or fourth
issue here. You know, she drew each individual
Marty like he specifically goes and says, hey,
you're from this time or you're from that time
or you're from a timeline where My hand did get
injured and I never got to play guitar kind of
a thing, right? The whole church thing was a
little weird. Yeah, you're right. Like I'm looking
back at it now like Because we've never known
Marty or his parents To be like loyal short churchgoers.
That was never a part of I'm not saying it can't
be I'm just saying We don't know that part of
their history because in the movies and everything
else we've seen to this point that they've never
been to church until that he needed the advice
about you know the the multiple destiny kind
of a thing Yeah, that's true. I mean, but it
adds a great line that I love probably one of
my favorite parts of this he's like perfect doc
and i are going to hell because the the priest
there or the pastor whatever you want to call
it basically makes a comment about um that it
would that it would be not condoned you know
that type of thing and so he he translates that
into doc and him are going to hell i thought
that was funny And right before that whole scene
there's also a very interesting or cool little
thing that they do with the pictures where he's
going back through like a scrapbook of photographs
and he's remembering some of the events and not
remembering the others, which is kind of how
he's trying to figure out if he lived them or
not. He's like, I remember this picture. I don't
remember this one. I remember this one. I don't
remember this. So I thought that kind of set
the stage fairly well for what they're trying
to get at. Yeah, pretty much. Then we have Jennifer
and Marty in the truck trying to figure out all
of that and he goes and takes her to Lone Pine
Mall and She's like Marty for God's sake. It's
the name of a mall that's been eating at you
Yeah, this is like a conversation with TFG on
my guys I Don't live that far from you now I
can you know But yeah, they go through the whole
mall thing, because it's called Lone Pine Mall,
and it was Twin Pines Mall, so he's talking about
him knowing something different than she does
as far as their life goes, and he's going back
through the whole thing with what happened there
with Doc. Yeah. So she doesn't quite understand
what his issue is, and that's kind of where he
comes to the first idea that the only person
that's going to understand what he's thinking
is Doc. Yeah. because he's the only one that
has experienced this type of thing but we'll
have to get back to to dock a little bit later
because we have to deal with some police oh yeah
so police have come to figure out what's going
on there they see McFly there they see Jennifer
and of course they've just been talking with
needles so They have an interest in what's going
on here because needles was was bringing up Marty
Thank You cat Yeah, and then the cops are like,
oh, what's this machine should I turn it off?
What's this? Oh, no, it's don't don't touch that
it's supposed to be on and it's the message machine
and Apparently, there's a message. It's time.
We had a talk a friend in time done done done
I know you had reservations and kind of anti
against going from Needles the story to this
story, but I thought this first part of this
story was done really well Getting past the whole
needle stuff. Yeah and It's just gonna get better
from here. I think like when I read this I was
like, oh wow. Oh wow Okay, that's the way they're
going then. All right. Yep uh... i get it wait
why did it all okay it's like all these all these
lines in my head like all right that's what we're
doing now that works no i think it does set up
an interesting thing here and we we got a nice
little dynamic going where marty's questioning
things and and trying to figure out who's who
i think that's uh... that's a nice thing there
and i think you know it is going to take him
talking with doc eventually the that's the only
person that can relate to that but before that
we have to figure out who left this message for
him you know sure selling dot brown so we have
another altercation in the next issue here starting
off with him with uh... marty and needles uh...
so that that's been through line here that They
keep bringing up. So obviously that's good continuity
there. Yeah throwing ice cream at Marty see I
didn't like I didn't even catch that at first
like I see them in the background kind of a thing
on that like the page where Jennifer's like I
was You know, she's like that was right where
Doc said it would You know, Doc Brown would find
it. Like that page, I see Needles and his people
in the background, but I didn't even notice until
there was green stuff on Marty's thing that it
was a snow cone that they threw at him. Oh, yeah,
yeah. So they throw that at him and, you know,
they're kind of going back and forth about Jennifer
driving, you know, taking Needles off the road,
et cetera. And she calls him Dougie. Yeah. And
then we get an interesting situation where somebody
introduces themselves to Mr. Marty McFly, Professor
Marcus Irving. Who is uh, and um, he talks about
bob talks about this in the intro. We're on first
name basis. So I call him Bob But uh, Bob Ogle
talks about this in the intro that there is a
character that they're going to introduce In
this that had you know, a new character that
wasn't in the movies. So that is what we have
here with this professor Marcus Irving Who they
go into the backstory a little bit, but basically
to sum it up he Was also doing similar stuff
that Doc Brown was doing as far as trying to
develop projects for the government etc So he's
kind of got that scientific background and kind
of trying to pick up where? Where Doc Brown left
off and and doing some stuff for the government.
Yeah so they have this conversation and he basically
Feeds Marty a line of BS pretty much yeah because
he created a time machine out of a yugo yeah
uh no so he's basically creating a time machine
he's trying to do the same thing that doc brown
was doing um he's just missing a key component
and that is why we have him here talking to marty
he's trying to trick him into uh helping him
get that component that he needs to continue
his uh his journey so to speak Yeah, which is
the flux capacitor. Right. So we flashback, we
go through his previous time where he's being
the scientist and talking about trying to figure
out all these different equations, et cetera,
et cetera, et cetera, and not getting where he
needed to be. So it kind of sets up why he's
now doing what he's doing. He's so jealous of
dr. Brown dot doc and he's like dr. Emmett Brown
some stuffed shirt with a trust fund who'd worked
on the Manhattan project had been asked before
me like Yeah, you're not God's gift of science,
dude Doc Brown might be but you ain't Right.
So he's on the the move trying to find these
different things etc And he's going to try to
use Marty to get that. So you have him drawing
pictures of different timelines and trying to
explain a little bit about what happened here.
And I thought I actually would have loved it
if they would have done a more of a close up
of that drawing at some point. They did. No,
I mean, even more than they did, like spent more
time with it. But it was interesting because
it kind of talks about the alternate timeline.
So you have the past, you have a splitting off
into two different presence and all that kind
of stuff, which always helps try to make sense
of all these different timelines and alternate.
Reality is etc. Etc. Yeah So and this kind of
goes back to the fact that Marty's questioning,
you know who he is and which version he is etc
etc and then We see an interesting thing that
we've seen from the movies Marty's hands starts
disappearing and so does his picture of Jennifer,
right and so does he Doc walks right through
him to the other Marty So now we have multiple
Marty's But it was a dream Yeah So that's kind
of the stuff that he's going through in his head
dealing with alternate timelines etc etc So get
a little moment where his dad and him have a
moment and then he goes off to write a message
to Doc Yeah, cuz that's how they do it they write
messages it gets sent to the future and then
all sudden boom two seconds later They're usually
here. So And dog shows up in a mummy suit. Yeah
So now we finally have Doc and Marty together
again, we took a while to get here I think we're
on page like 40 something or whatever, but we
finally got Doc and Marty together so That's
when things really start to take off, no pun
intended. So he's telling him about what's going
on, and the Professor Irving thing made him nervous,
and Doc says, who? Not Marcus Irving. And that's
when he gets freaked out and does his great Scott
line, come along Marty, we have a moment to lose.
So obviously they know that something is not
what it seemed it would be and Marty's starting
to figure out that he got duped Yep, because
then all these other Marty's start showing up
and basically carry our Marty away Yeah, attack
the killer Marty's exactly and doc is oblivious
as always exactly Marty I expected no less treachery
from Professor Irving well This is an inconvenience,
but nothing unsurmountable come on. We'll find
Irving and get this untangled before it escalates
We've certainly faced graver dangers than this
done done done, and that's how this chapter ends.
Yeah Part two is interesting Like you said the
whole more set up with Irving we finally get
I like that it took until the middle almost the
end of part two to actually get Doc in there
because There have to be times when more yeah,
okay Marty and Doc face everything together.
That's great. That's fine, but there has to be
times where Marty Confaced stuff on his own like
in the first volume when you know He first met
doc and trying to figure out how to get into
his lab and that kind of stuff And all that like
there has to be situations where Marty is on
his own or Marty and Jennifer are on their own
and then you have doc come in to like you know
all of that but Wow multiple Marty's at the end.
Holy crap Yeah, it's kind of interesting. So
we definitely have a situation here where we
have character we've had marty and he's had his
direct antagonist with you know the different
hands or with needles et cetera et cetera we
haven't had a counterpart to dock when it comes
to the science well so it's interesting now that
we have two different people there cable of of
coming up with the knowledge to produce a time
machine et cetera et cetera and sets up a interesting
conundrum here because now you have two different
people that Being an endless loop of going back
and trying to change what the other person did
over and over and over and over and over again
Yeah, so That's kind of where we're set up here
when we start the third volume What I love about
part three the main cover at least on the inside
of the trade is you've got 50s Marty you've got
Nuclear suit Marty you've got regular Marty you've
got old west Marty and some other kind of maybe
future maybe that's the business marty version
like the 2015 version like i love that that's
so cool yeah it's definitely an interesting look
at all the different martys and yeah um and then
we go right into this attack that marty and doc
are being costed by multiple martys yeah so and
they're thinking what the heck have we gotten
ourselves into um you know and marty's saying
it's his fault and all this that's one thing
that i do want to bring up because That is one
part of this volume three, Back to the Future
thing that does bug me a little bit. Like there
is like 3 ,000 different times where Marty is
saying, oh this is my fault, this is my fault,
over and over and over again. And I could have
dealt with a little less of that. I get he feels
bad, like whatever, but we get it. Like we don't
need it beaten over our heads that you think
it's your fault. Like we get that you're feeling
guilty. Yeah So yeah, and he's been doing that
since Not necessarily since volume one of the
ongoing but at least since last was since volume
two There there have been times were like, oh,
you know volume two was like, oh I have to you
know, I feel bored I have to you know find myself
kind of a thing I have to do this time -traveling
thing Jennifer and all this and all that but
now it's like Always me everything is my fault.
How is it your fault some crackpot old scientist
brought you into this technically? It's Doc Brown's
fault for all this right right like really Yeah,
so anyways they get in this fight doc takes off
and the and the DeLorean With one Marty hanging
on yeah, and Marty is basically being held hostage
by a couple more Marty's so Getting confusing
that's for sure But yeah, I don't know it's a
Now they're in that situation where they're trying
to come up with a plan on how they're gonna fix
it You know this kind of like goes through a
cycle you have Marty and Doc doing something
they run into some situation that seems ridiculous
And then they have to come up with a plan on
how to fix it and then when they fix it immediately
after that it happens again usually so We're
used to this type of situation Like you said
they've been through graver things before yeah
and you know it goes back and forth between uh...
blue jacket and marty with doc and marty with
the other martys in the wherever they are and
marty is trying to figure out you know uh...
you know who are you who is this you know what
timeline are you from you know this and the other
thing and this is what i liked about this was
uh... you know your hand is so stiff Must make
it hard to play guitar, you know all of that
like he's trying to figure out all this stuff
and then You know you cut back to Doc and he
the Marty in the car and Doc have a little fight
and oh my god He rips his face He basically pulls
a 2007 Optimus Prime give me your face And it
is revealed that Marty is a robot Yeah So a lot
of back and forth there like you were talking
about where they're it's basically Marty talking
to people that aren't talking to him. Right.
And then Doc discovering that they're not real,
that they're robots. And then we have the DeLorean
crashing back into the building. Yep. And then
we have Marty and Doc reunited again. And Marty
is seeing that they are robots. Now they're all
trying to figure out what the hell they're going
to do with that. Yeah. So. Yep, and then we of
course have The other professor Marcus Irving
yeah, yeah showing up and he sees that two of
the robots have been destroyed So he's kind of
understands where they're at and then we have
Marty and Doc trying to come up with their come
up with their plan Yep So and then we have another
interjection of needles So He's kind of like
I said being brought up here and there and everywhere
and then the the third robot Marty who clearly
has a robot face at this point It's a fight with
needles and his friends. Yeah So they think it's
already it's weird how long they think that's
still Marty. Yeah. Well needles and most of his
friends are pretty Dumb most of the time and
these robots are all kind of programmed with
different directives. So Like one of them like
they were coming up here directive three is eliminate
witnesses one of them was to capture Marty You
know so that they have a specific criteria that
they're kind of following as we go through here
So yeah, they kind of have the three laws like
the three laws of robotics kind of thing But
not really because directive three as you said
Eliminate witnesses well a robot killing anybody
is not exactly in with the three laws of robotics
but we end this this issue with This is all my
fault. Woe is me. I'm dumbass Marty McFly that
ruined everything. Yadda yadda yadda. I do love
the art in this. I love how Emma's design on
the robot faces is. It's not any specific homage.
It's not a faceplate, it's not a bumblebee, it's
not a this, it's not a that. And they could have
easily done that because IDW has the Transformers
license, so they could have... Not saying Marty
McFly is Optimus Prime, but they could have done
that but the fact that they drew just generic
Robot faces for these things. I thought was really
cool I love all the different Marty designs like
when he's all the Marty's are together like the
ones in the two vests the blue jacketed one the
the Like I said before the one in the in the
radiation suit all of that. I think the art in
this is so good. Yeah Definitely some of the
most consistent stuff we've seen in the series
up to this point, so. Yep. Alright, so we start
off our next volume. Coming off the heels of
what we just saw with Needles and his gang trying
to be eliminated by Robot Marty, etc. And what
exactly, how they're gonna get out of that. Yep,
and the only way to do that is for Marty to surrender
himself Basically basically because that you
know and completes directive two which is capture
Marty McFly Yeah, before we get to that, I do
like one of my favorite quotes here between Doc
Brown and Marty in this issue, but it comes right
away at the beginning here, and they're trying
to talk about what's happening with, you know,
Professor Irving, who's gallivanting through
the timeline, and it says basically, you know,
we need to stop the robot. We happen to have
electromagnetica. Electromagnet on you by any
chance and Marty says why would I I love Doc's
response Marty I don't know what a teenage boy
in the 1980s does for fun a simple no would have
sufficed So That was great just like I don't
know maybe maybe boys from the 80s had electromagnets
on them I don't know what they did for fun. Well,
you know, there was you know a rector sense and
all that So, yeah, then we have Marty, you know,
trying to be captured because he comes back in
the scene, so that triggers the second response.
And in the meantime, Doc makes a run for it.
Mm -hmm. And what I want to know is, because
it's never actually shown throughout the rest
of this story, what was Directive 1? Like, seriously?
What the hell was that? Because if Directive
2 is to capture Marty McFly and Directive 3 is
to eliminate all witnesses, what was your main
objective? Like, other than tricking Marty and
the robots and the this and the like, the robots
never say what Directive 1 was. Yeah, I don't
remember that either. So Doc comes in to try
to, you know, make the rescue, but unfortunately
he gets injected with sedative. yeah tranquilizer
dart so uh so that's in him he's passed out and
now we have mr erving coming back in to try to
play all the cards here and and and run the show
so he's uh he's knocked out most of needles and
the friends he's knocked out doc brown marty's
about the only one that's still with it yeah
and they're all driving away yeah and we get
a flashback to you know younger, more innocent,
ignorant self carrying your flux capacitor in
my trunk. I've been driving around trying to
lose anyone who might be following me, and, you
know, he's reminiscing on how and what his objective
is gonna be and all that. Right, right. And his
truck, yeah, his truck or whatever it is that
he's driving looks like a Police APC version
of the DeLorean. Yeah, so we have both cars being
driven here the DeLorean and then his truck Kind
of going into this remote place in the side of
a cliff, etc Off in the middle of nowhere basically
Yeah so and basically what happened here is he
Sends one one place and another another place
So he's going to 1997 But before that he tries
to drop Marty and Doc off into the prehistoric
time period Yeah, so that's what how he's gonna
get rid of them for good put him back there.
Let the dinosaurs do their thing but before he
leaves Doc gets in one quick message to the other
professor basically what happens if We have some
type of disease or something You know, which
makes the professor think a bunch and while meanwhile
while Doc and Marty are trying to survive from
saber -toothed tigers and Dinosaurs and whatever
else is out here in this prehistoric time period
The professor is considering what Doc said and
if they do have some type of sickness or disease
and they wipe out Some type of all life or this
that and the other and maybe nothing ever happens
and human beings cease to exist Yep, and we get
Marty and Doc versus a saber -toothed tiger and
luckily Doc still had his wrapping from his mummy
suit Somehow don't know how but okay sure it's
back to the future whatever What I love before
they got to this period was when Marcus said
told the driver to take him to 88 I'm like we're
going to 19 and then I realized 88 miles per
hour duh Do like this though because it did set
up a time here where we didn't know what was
going to Happen how were how are they gonna get
out of the prehistoric times because there's
no DeLorean here There's no way they're gonna
be able to build something back in this time
period So it was for a little bit somewhat of
a mystery here trying to figure out how they
were gonna get out of here so That is interesting,
but obviously the professor comes back and picks
them back up and then they go to his his lair
so to speak 1997 I think his laboratory yes Yep,
so He's basically got all this stuff going on
all these different models of different flux
capacitors and and this that and the other And
a bunch more robots. Oh, yeah, there's tons of
Marty bots and dock bottoms Yeah, that's who
so he had backup bots of everything And so basically
they're amongst an army of robots and how are
they gonna get out of this? Yeah That's how volume
for part four ends Pretty much the one thing
that They bring up that we haven't mentioned
yet is the inter what the internet Marty is part
of the future Yeah, exactly What are you doing,
Doc? I need fuel. Go ahead. Quick. Get in the
car. No, no, no, Doc. I just got here, okay?
Jennifer's here. We're gonna take the new truck
for a spin. Well, bring along. This concerns
her, too. Wait a minute, Doc. What are you talking
about? What happens to us in the future? Are
we gonna become assholes or something? No, no,
no, Marty. Both you and Jennifer turn out fine.
It's your kids, Marty. Something has gotta be
done about your kids. So all right, so we start
part five here in 1997 with Doc Brown and Marty
amongst a slew of robots, you know Yeah, they
start with the robots and Marty or doc has the
auto retrieval thing for the DeLorean Yep, so
the DeLorean comes flying in. As always. Yep,
crashes through the window, they get in, and
it's basically the professors trying to get down
to them while they're trying to escape. They're
flying around this building, etc. The one thing
I noticed before we get to the DeLorean crashing
through is when they go, Doc hits the button
and then they go to the next panel where the
butler Marty is kind of sweeping up. I'm like,
ooh, it's a back to the future version of the
Batcave, because you look at that and come on,
the car's right there. There's a ramp, there's
stairs, there's all this stuff on display. Damn,
it's a back to the future Batcave. That's funny,
but yeah, basically thing flies out and and crashes
through and they get in they escape and professor
Irving can't get to the garage. He can't get
to the penthouse He can't get anywhere in his
own damn building right, right and then they
do notice that there's a lot that basically what's
been happening is the professor has been going
into the future and then coming back and like
designing things kind of backward Science to
try to figure out how things were made etc reverse
engineering etc And you have them kind of looking
at all these different things like cell phones
and iPods and the internet etc etc You know,
so that's that's an interesting panel. It's kind
of cool with the except for Google instead of
Google Well, they I mean they really can't do
right, right I mean they got away with Cuz you
can barely make out iPod Mm -hmm iPod slash zoom
or whatever so you know Right so and you know
taking a look at all the different stuff and
these future objects and Marty's thinking there
might be a way to figure out some more about
him and if he's famous because he's on the internet
or whatever no that comes later, but It's interesting
thing and there's also they kind of have a light
bulb go off because they see this professor's
youth and some pictures of him as a child right
and They kind of come to the realize that he's
all alone. He's always all alone. He's in the
secluded area. He's It doesn't have friends etc.
Etc. Mm -hmm, so Gives them an idea. Yeah Which
which is where we get to the point of them confronting
his younger self Sort of and he's like there
this must be me. I've become my own reinforcement.
I'm like Yeah, yeah, basically the other the
other So we have two of the professors also showing
up two different versions the younger one the
older one so back in 1986 So we're bouncing back
and forth between 97 and 86 here Yep, cuz wow,
there's just so much going on here Yeah Multiple
McFly's multiple Docs multiple professors multiple
everybody. Yeah, so it got a little confusing
here but Necessary I guess with what they were
doing Yeah, they almost injured some innocent
bystanders which plays a part kinda going through
this timeline too there's a woman and her child
that almost get hit by the car yeah yeah so basically
they have to convince the younger version of
the professor that what he's doing is wrong basically
yeah so they have to play to the fact that he
always is alone and and why he's doing what he's
doing and and you know how he became this paranoid
cheater so to speak So, it's basically them finding
a way to convince him without having to hurt
him or do anything else like that. And then we
get to see the older version of the Professor
and all the duplicates start to disappear. That's
good. Yep. No more Marty bots. Yeah, enough with
the Marty bots. Exactly. We basically have Marty
saying, and that's how it was, Jennifer, and
they're back in the diner. Yep. and you know
luckily young Irving old Irving whatever it is
you know he has relationship with the woman that
he saved or whatever that you know that is and
and it ends on um it's the price of admission
which gives me an idea for a song yep so he's
finally kind of come to terms with who he is
and that you know all the different alternate
forms, et cetera, et cetera, they're all still
him. Right. So. Yep. Why was that? Yeah, I thought
this was going to be a little different than
what it was. Like, I get it. Introducing the
new character of Marcus Irving. But I really
thought we were going to split off into two different
timelines. Yeah, yeah, it was kind of weird because
obviously you're getting that character you don't
know and the whole thing's based on that and
then you have all these different clones and
bots etc etc so it was a place that we haven't
gone to yet in this franchise as far as the clones
and things like that and you know usually they
avoid trying to run into each other but here
we have a situation where there's they're running
into each other every other place right it's
all robots instead of real yeah And except for
the professor, I guess, is both real. Yeah, it
was interesting. I wasn't expecting it to go
this route either. I did enjoy it. It kept my
interest. The art is very consistent throughout
this episode, like we've mentioned a couple different
times. You know, there's some good lines and
whatnot. It's just a little different than what
we normally get with Back to the Future. Right.
But you were asking for, you know, last episode,
you were asking for more Marty and Doc adventure.
Yeah, that definitely gives it to us. Just definitely
gives it to us. I liked it. I liked it overall.
Yeah, I liked it overall, too. But when I say
that I thought it was going to split off into
two separate timelines, what I mean is... Like,
okay, look at the first movie. In the, um...
In the club scene. the club scene at the under
the sea dance when you have one Marty on stage
and one Marty backstage I thought the quote -unquote
new character was going to be a real Marty from
a different timeline that like this issue or
that in this volume in this trade he says I'm
Forgetting things or time has changed and I haven't
or this like I don't remember the way I did this
or the way I did that So the way I thought they
were gonna introduce a new character quote -unquote
a new villain or whatever was that it was going
to be an alternate like Look at Biff. Biff has
two alternates. Biff has really, you know, docile,
you know, car washing, auto detailing Biff, and
then Biff has, I've taken over the world! Like,
that's what I thought this was going to be. I'm
not disappointed that that's not what it is.
I'm just saying that's what I thought it was
going to be, and... Was mistaken and I was fine
with being mistaken about it I mean cuz like
lately like we said we didn't know they're gonna
be robots at first right like I thought they
were what Marty was talking about like all these
different time periods of himself I like Marcus
Irving and at first I thought he was going to
be the worst villain in the piece, but I Don't
know nobody could really top Biff when Biff is
Doing what what he does we'll have to wait to
next week to see if anybody else besides Biff
Griff or Needles can really top the back -to
-the -future villainy because next week. We'll
be talking about Citizen Brown Which is another
miniseries they did But overall volume three
who is Marty McFly I'd give it a probably a four
out of five. What about you? I'd probably be
you know three and a half Four somewhere in there.
I mean I enjoy it. It was entertaining I would
prefer them coming into contact with the real
versions of themselves versus robots So that
I would prefer and my only nitpick about the
episode overall was, or the volume was a little
bit too much of Marty saying it's my fault for
everything. Blaming himself, yeah. Blaming himself,
and I got that. That was kind of, it ran its
course. But I thought, like I said, great artwork,
interesting dialogue here and there, and some
good moments. I just, yeah, like it was a little
bit, I like my Back to the Future dealing more
with reality than the robot world. So I guess
that's my only nitpick. Yeah So interested to
see where we go from here Absolutely What do
you got going on over on cinema geeks right now?
Oh, you know the ongoing stuff we Most recently
had our March Madness Tournament back last month
where we did all the Marvel movies and pitted
them against each other And then we have our
Kevin Smith the retrospective going on if you
like Kevin Smith. We've been doing all of his
movies uh... we've been doing video game movies
uh... we're almost towards the end of that so
there's uh... there's a lot of stuff going on
over there you should check out absolutely um...
yeah here inside the pullback we've got all this
back to the future stuff we've got two more episodes
of that and then i'm gonna do a free comic book
day episode after that i'm maybe taking a month
off i don't know Because I think Freak Humbug
Day is probably the only episode that's gonna
happen in May because I need some time off trying
to catch up with all this stuff. I've... Don't
really want to put this out there, but since
I'm going to anyway, I'm just going to. It's
gonna be a behind -the -scenes thing, folks,
but... I'm toying around with doing a four -hour
live show Monday through Friday like a radio
show, because Vlog Talk Radio, you can broadcast
live. Right and have people call in and things.
I don't know if I'm going to be doing this, but
I'm Starting to think about it and toy around
with it and write out how I would want to do
it and things like that So I don't know if that's
gonna happen or not But yeah, we get a bunch
of stuff coming up here inside the pullback You
can catch us on Facebook and Twitter also follow
