About this Episode

Mike and JT return to Neo Gotham to discuss two interlude issues from the 2016 Batman Beyond Rebirth series. Issue #12 features Nyssa as Batgirl and Max working together in Crown Point to take down corrupt cops and drug dealers, while Issue #13 introduces the new character Hacker and brings back Shriek as an anti-hero, all while Batman deals with a sabotaged defense grid during a city sports competition. Both issues serve as character-building stories before the next major arc.

Hi, this is Kevin Conroy and you're listening

to the Geekcast Radio Network. You have just

jumped inside the pull bag here on the geek cast

radio network This is episode 299 and I am of

course TF2 and my joining me once again is JT

from Saskatoon. Hello, sir. I'm back Stop it

Yeah, and we're here to talk about the next two

stories in the Batman Beyond Rebirth 2016 series

These are two interludes before the next big

arc uh... one is the bat women beyond and the

other is gotham games uh... so this is going

to be like a little quick episode kind of thing

here folks were still going to go through both

issues but it's not going to take as long as

the story arc does obviously uh... chapter twelve

or issue twelve bat women beyond has nissa a

.k .a the future batgirl of neil gotham old barbara

terry bruce and max what do you think of the

cover sir i like it it's very movie poster ish

yeah very movie poster ish it's very batman and

robin movie poster ish blasphemy oh come on next

thing you're gonna start making ice puns and

then i'm out I used to meet you you yes I used

to meet you exactly there is not the same if

you don't do the bad Arnold voice yeah well I'll

leave that to better professionals there is an

alternate cover with Nyssa in her Batgirl uniform

sitting atop some building in Gotham probably

somewhere in Crown Point the interesting thing

about this one is this is as I said I can pull

this up here. It is an interlude to eventually

what's going to be, you know, the big story coming

up, which we'll talk about at the end of this

episode. But we have a guest team, so no Dan

Jergens, no Bernard Chang. I'm probably gonna

butcher these names, but a Batman Beyond interlude

by the guest team of... Vita Alia and Steve Orlando

Orlando obviously Pencils done by Sia and inks

are done by Dexter Vines with colors by Tony

Avena Obviously Travis Lane him on letters Bernard

Chang and Marcelo did the cover Dave Johnson

did the variant cover Rob Levin is the associate

editor Jim Chadwick editor Batman created by

Bob Kane and Bill Finger I hate that they use

with that makes no damn sense they both of them

created the damn thing don't say Bob Kane with

Bill Finger I mean it's great after almost 75

year well over 75 years that bill that bill finally

got recognition, but You look at Superman. It's

Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster. It's not Jerry

Siegel with Joe Schuster I'd have to check the

last issues because I would it's always it's

always said Bob Kane with Bill Finger. Every

comic I've seen since they gave Bill credit,

it's always said that. Every comic, every anything

that has to do with Batman since they gave him

credit, it says Bob Kane with Bill Finger. Okay.

Can I finish speaking, please? No. I would like

to think that it's just a huge kerfuffle and

it's supposed to be AND Bill Finger. But at this

point, it would cost them too much to, you know,

reprint all this crap. And you'd think they'd

just change it going forward. Because, yeah,

that's kind of a slap in the finger family's

face. But yeah, we get we get an interlude. See,

I know the digital series and the couple of Batman

Beyond series before this are seen to be, you

know, The continuation of the animated series

but with bringing missa into the rebirth universe

like this it kind of Grandfathers them in together.

I mean the argument could be made the Previous

Batman Beyond series did take place in neo Gotham

You know prior to brother I because they've clearly

established that Terry was active for quite some

time prior to You know brother eyes attempt to

take over the world, right? so you know it can

work but you know we we the open the way i see

it is the 2012 to 24 whatever the kyle higgins

run was that was specifically dcau kyle even

told me himself it was you know mark of the phantasm

is his version of mask of the fan that it that

was his baby that was his thing when dan came

on for the 2015 series See this as a continuation

of that 2015 series. We're still in the same

timeline as that 2015 series We're still in the

decades from now thing. I know it's I'm just

saying you can yeah, you know headcanon it in

there. It's absolutely, you know, it's This no,

I'm not even gonna bring that example up because

you know it would involve referring to that Tom

Cruise mummy movie that came out last year and

I Refused to give that movie any do whatsoever.

But anyway oh look just like the last few issues

decades from now neo -gotham starts this issue

with uh you know the bow there's the it's yeah

nissa's doing the narration talking about the

bowery and crown point and you know this is all

this is the point is like a neighborhood or neighboring

crime alley and all that but we see barbara gordon

you know breaking into this place Finding a secret

stash of something and then she gets the requisite

black bag over her head and you know we cut to

the Batcave where Max and Matt get this alert

that you know Barbara's been taken now see I

always thought and I Okay ever since the Gail

Simone Batgirl series the the the new 52 series

I don't know if they've used that before that

series, but ever since then the purple background

for the the inner monologue for whatever I always

thought that was Barbara's schtick and I thought

when I first read this that that's Barbara narrating

not Nessa yeah that's kind of what I got the

first time I read through this issue but you

know it makes sense and then just for a wee second

like the first time I read this issue and I saw

that purple you know thought box background I

It just sent me back to the Stephanie Brown Batgirl

series for a second, but you know It's bit I

like Max's the commissioner it's been a pico

second like Can we go a week? What the hell is

a pico second seriously, it's like smaller than

a nanosecond. It's an even smaller unit of time

We then get to Leslie Tompkins High School. Okay,

I like that reference. It's kind of cool. It

would have been a little funnier if it was Hamilton

Hills High School, but Leslie Tompkins works.

Well, I mean, it probably still exists. Yeah,

because this is a different area. Yeah, this

is a different area of town. So I get it. It's

fine. You're right. Yeah. And you get Nissa's

hanging out with her, you know, her BFFs. And

they're all like, hey, you gonna... come out

and you know do this is like no i got studying

to do college prep courses and she walks away

and she suits up and goes out on patrol and it's

like when we flash back to max so first of all

bernard chang's art on max it's the one design

in that that i it just it's not bad it just kind

of annoys me the way because the So how does

this make you feel because this is not Bernard?

Well, I'm I know that's what I'm getting to it's

just with the whole like side shave and the hairstyle

like This art, you know, it's a little softer

I think it works a little better because it's

it's got this almost kind of animated like feel

to it Yeah, it does, you know, and and I like

how max is stressing Gordon have to be Gordon

have to be an expat girl should be judging the

damn rescue, you know and she's like oh god oh

god oh god and you know i like how she she doesn't

even suit up she basically changes her top pulls

the collar up and she is i am a creature of the

night i am vengeance i am completely out of my

depth yes exactly and you know we get uh we get

back to nissa and i love this i love this this

shot here And you're right, it is Nyssa. It could

be either one of them, but I don't know. As far

as the monologue goes, but yeah, I just love

that look though. That's an awesome look. And

then just that shot when you get back to Nyssa,

it looks like kind of the Cassandra Cain back

girl for a moment, just like where her mouth's

completely in shadow. And the art, like I know

it's not Scott McDaniel, but... It looks just

in that the first two panels here, you know when

we get back to just say it looks very Scott McDaniel

ish Yeah, and then you know we go the only thing

I don't like about this art here It's just one

little thing at these two panels So we have the

big reveal panel of her standing over and you

know fighting off these people and she says Drugs

come in and end up in middle schools who's supplying

time in a place stops the pain tentacle boy and

it does a close -up on her and he's answering

her but between what her cow looks like in shadow

and revealing of the light it's black and then

shiny blue like on her forehead and like i don't

like that like black and gray whatever black

and black blue and yellow whatever pick a pick

a scheme already like I know this is a lighting

thing, I understand that it's a lighting thing,

but I just don't like the way that it's lit.

Because it looks like it's a two -tone color

mask, and it looks really stupid to me. Like

I said, it's a nitpick, it doesn't take away

from my enjoyment of the story at all. And she

still has it throughout the rest of it, because

even when she meets, when Max shows up, and she

turns to her, you know. It's cute to think you

can sneak up on someone from the point. Just

tie on my shoes loudly And I like how Nissa she's

still given Max a lot of the a lot of attitude

but Clearly she is mellowed from the Kyle Higgins

run. Oh, she was introduced because she isn't

right away. She isn't a complete bitch. Yeah

But well because we've got to the point and again

if you want to continue with you know Kyle Higgins

into Dan's I almost said Dan Slott Wow into Dan

Juergens 2014 into 2015 In the first when Nessa

was first introduced we had just met her She

was doing this on her own with no real quote

-unquote blessing from Bruce Wayne or anybody

You know and it was a whole story of her and

Barbara and whatever else and I like the character

progression of over time of how much Not necessarily

she's mellowed, but she doesn't just have that

hard edge what she has that hard edge with criminals

She's supposed to that's her fucking job you

know, do your job, get that sixth championship,

sorry, wrong podcast. Easy Mike, easy. Oh yeah,

so they started, you know, comparing notes and

then Nissa kind of gets on this high horse, you

know, where was Batman, you know, when our community

center was held hostage, you know, or when those

kids were hospitalized because the superintendent

was a dick and buying expired food. And then

Max comes back with, you know, You know she hacked

the guy's computer and you know About the the

glitch that alerted the police to illegal rent

hikes And not every solution is a fist to the

face and then this is like it's hard to stay

righteously indignant when you go cyber Robin

Hood on me and then you know, we get to We see

the gang bangers and a cop and they kind of get

into it I love before, you know, when Nissa says,

welcome to Crown Point, Max, I love the next

shot of her jumping off the building because

the drug dealers show up or whatever and Max

is like, my god, they're not even hiding what

they're doing. And Nissa's like, turn it to fall

behind, uptown girl. Somebody cue Billy Joel,

please. to the Christopher Nolan universe. In

the next scene, we find out the ringleader of

these corrupt cops is Flass. And it's also not

just the Nolan universe, but Batman year one

with Detective Gordon's original partner, Flass.

Absolutely, yeah, Flass. That's what I thought

it was. It was more year one than... So this

is probably his son or grandson. Something like

that, yeah. Yeah, definitely a relation, but

it's just like... Don't talk over the lady, especially

when it's incriminating yourselves and I like

how he like starts talking shit to her like just

trying to like be the big man we get back to

You know Nissa and Max Can we get a little nod

to we find Max has got some skills beyond just

the hacking like she met Satana and kind of had

that Meeting your hero moment that gives you

like that insane amount of inspiration And then

we get the classic, you know diving headfirst

through the window. Oh, yeah amongst the criminals,

you know Either you like picking glass out of

your shorts or what's that line from the Joker?

Anyway, you know, it's it's one of those moments.

Yeah But you know they drop down the cops have

drawn in there about the fire flasks got a gun

to Barbara's head And I like that line from Nyssa.

How did your famous illusionist handle real bullets?

Huh, Max? Part of the trick, kid. Yeah. And then

we find, you know, Nyssa takes on Flass, and

he's like, he disappeared. The teacher was selling

drugs to kids. And, you know, it's... And again,

like I said, this kind of grandfathers the Juergens

run in with Kyle Higgins stuff where Max, you

know, releases... the commission and said you

glad she made it out of the brother I mess okay,

so you know knew she was a good fit for the mantle

and I'm just wondering was that like a solid

light hologram because this one cop like charges

max with like a baton and Yeah, I would like

to think it would be something like that, but

I guess it must have been some sort of Solid

light hologram, you know They knock the cops

out, Batgirl and Batgirl. I love it. I just fucking

love it. Got your back. This is when you make

an appearance after months of nothing, you complaining.

Planning on it. I just love it. I know, it's

just like, the new hotness meet the old hotness.

And then you got Max is up on the roof with a

mini, like future mini laptop and a gosh darn...

Net launcher, which I thought was a rocket launcher

point, but this is the hardcore You know you

get that they take out flasks and I Like he takes

a swing like he's he's honestly thinks he's got

a shot Yeah, really? And he's professing the

whole you know law of the jungle eat or be eaten

You know you don't have the guts you don't have

what it takes to rule this place and it's just

like Is he just that much of a narcissist that

he can't stop? like trying to prove his dominance

or is he just trying to egg Nissa on so she like

Excessive forces him to death Yeah, and I love

Barbara's line that bat on your chest means you

don't have to do what's expected of you You've

got nothing to prove not to him and not to me

only to yourself Yeah, no that like I love that

line. That's great Because essentially even you

know obviously Bruce is still around you know

we just talked about it last issue with rise

of the demon and everything else, but as Tim

or not Tim Tim as Matt wow wow I was really put

young Tim Drake and Matt McGinnis's shoes. Holy

shit As Matt mentioned that you know Bruce and

Terry are off you know facing ross rads that

raced and i even i screwed it up fucking hell

parking arrow verse they said his name the other

night uh... so yeah i i just i love it even though

they're gone right now that they're off doing

their league of assassins thing earlier shadows

thing barbara is essentially another She's not

obviously as hard -nosed as Bruce, obviously,

but Batgirl the Batgirl, her giving Missa advice

on stuff, I just... It's like Bruce giving Terry

advice or Terry, you know, throwing certain things

from the past in Bruce's face and other issues.

Yeah. I do like how they signify that momentary

pause, like where Barbara, you know, she does

the bat in your chest line. And then she says,

who are you? Who are the people of Crown Point?

And that dot, dot, dot to illustrate the momentary

pause of Nissa. Like she's still contemplating,

you know, putting her fist three inches past

his face. Yep. And that, and then she takes off

and, you know, Barbara kind of, you know, she

basically, you know, she gives her her approval.

Yeah. She basically ingratiates her and says,

you know, I want you to know you do right by

that symbol. Mm -hmm. And then you see it's like,

you know days later Max and Nissa catch up Max

whips this I thought it was a battering or something.

Yeah It's Like this biometric communicator. She

says, you know, we could do a lot together without

Batman writing shotgun and Nissa swings off saying

us Batwoman could do just fine Yeah, and that

I mean that this is a perfectly adequate You

know, it's not It's nothing to write home about

it's not Exceptional and I don't mean that to

be a negative. It's just this is a perfectly

adequate filler issue It gives us a little you

know brings this back into it It sets up future

elements without being definitive about what's

coming. Yeah, and that's a good thing because

you have that's what I like about Like, we haven't

had this yet. I forget if we had. I don't remember

if we had it in the 2015 series. But 2016, we

started with Escaping the Grave. We then went

to Rise of the Demon. That's two big story arcs.

And then, you know, we have this issue and the

next issue as kind of not... I don't want to

think of these as fillers, even though they kind

of are. Not like it said in the beginning. It's

an interlude kind of a thing. And to me, like,

with Flash being there... focusing on Crown Point

and all that and focusing on Nyssa as Batgirl

this to me is like I don't mean it in the sense

of the tradition the the classic story Batgirl

and Robin year one but this to me is Nyssa's

own year one I I think a little just this specific

issue just that end shot when she's jumping away

off the rooftop that's the whole picture there

the building the art the the sky color all of

that you know us batwoman uh could do just fine

you know i just think that that's a nice little

nod to the year one styling oh yeah no it it

is that that not nice nod like that and then

we get barbara come back and you know again just

kind of re -solidifying the the connection to

the Kyle Higgins run. You know, she disappeared

and I couldn't get to see if she was okay. And

even Barbara acknowledges to Max that she failed,

you know, Nissa in that respect by not getting

to her to see if she was okay because she must

have thought I didn't care. Yeah. And, you know,

they reaffirmed that, you know, it's going to

be rough, but we can back her up and, you know,

she's not alone. Right, right. You know, and

like I said, it's when I say it's not to knock

it down. I just say when I say adequate, it's

it's not like a it's not a bad filler issue.

It's not a great filler issue. It's just this

is a solid filler issue. And, you know, it sets

up relationships that can be brought back in

the future without tying it solidly into, you

know, whatever the next big storyline is going

to be. Right. And the thing of this is, and what

I like about this series to this point, is, as

I've already said, we've had two very big story

arcs to start this. And there really wasn't,

like, most comic books, I don't want to say on

average, but traditionally most comic books are

40 pages. Most digital comics are... uh... twenty

pages or so because they don't obviously have

the ads like i'm looking at issue thirteen right

now and it's basically it's twenty two pages

you know most comics are forty pages long but

half of that is ads what i like about digital

comics and digital comics versus print comics

is going to be a topic uh... later this year

that we're gonna bring up again folks but in

digital comics as long as you have twenty two

full pages of story That's a great thing the

problem with that is you can't always fit in

every bit of character development care character

building thing So like I was saying before we

had two giant arcs now. We have these kind of

two little interlude issues to Specifically with

the Batwoman Beyond issue to build those characters

on their own without having to in like this takes

place at the same time as the last arc is going

you know is the last as rise of the demon is

going on so this isn't like bruce and terrier

just down the street twiddling their thumbs they're

off in tibet dealing with the racial bull thing

it's not like they had a boys night out or something

oh my god yeah uh issue 12 uh batwoman beyond

i'm probably gonna give it a four and a half

out of five i absolutely loved it i thought it

was great well yeah no i'm right there with you

it's uh it's like uh god what's the name here

of the artist i'm just looking that up again

because i want to make sure it's aelia something

or other it's uh well that's the writers it's

uh cia ohm's pencils like it's it's not like

i said it's not like i don't like bernard chang's

art but it's very striking it's very angular

and ohm's art is you know it's softer you know

And it's a little, it's like when you stare at

one of those 3D images, you're looking for the

sailboat and then you look away. It's kind of

like that. Like you just sometimes you need a

break. Yep. Absolutely. Moving on to issue 13,

yeah, 13 Gotham games. This one's really interesting

because it is written. and drawn by Bernard Chang

with Marcelo on colors, Travis on letters, Chang

and Marcelo did the cover but I forget did Bernard

do like in the past if it was the 20 I don't

think it's been this series but it might have

been the 2015 series since him and Juergens have

been on this on the series Has he done an issue

before as writer and artist? I don't remember

if he has when I saw that I thought that was

great Yeah, I think he's done art. Maybe not

writer artist. Yeah, I'm gonna say right off

the hop I got the alternate cover with the back

end the the Shree cover. It's it's very stark

and Mono kind of monochromatic with the of Batman's

you firmly in the eyesight of Shriek Shriek was

Probably my favorite villain Outside of light

to come out of the animated series Because I

just like I like this design. I like this. Yeah

Don't get me wrong. I like blight more. I wish

he would I know it's 13 episode season the you

know character space is a premium and we only

have stories for so much here and there I just

I wish blight would have been around longer in

the series Yeah, I mean He had his time I think

and that that Nuclear waste stick that nuclear

man stick kind of got old for me quickly like

I was more in thrilled with Technically, you

know, they wanted to make blight But the Batman

Beyond version of the Joker kind of thing I think

probably not but that's the inclusion I got from

him, but let's face it I think you can at least

agree with this ink is essentially Terry's Joker

because she Found out the Batcave knew the secret

all that stuff But shriek is amazing and all

as I can think looking at this cover throw a

little hot rod red in there It'll be bat Iron

Man Pretty much and you just to speak about blight

like the void sherman howard who did his voice

he is it was his performance as derrick powers

and blight that you know i i love the quality

he had this kelsey grammar type of quality to

his voice that i just want to listen to this

guy read the phone book you know He is blight

was my favorite film, but you know, we're back

to this Like I said, I love the alternate cover

the first original cover. I looked online. It's

it's okay I love the fact that they're bringing

blight back and up late. Sorry shriek back into

this and It's kind of you know, it kind of does

the pulp fiction thing of you know cutting back

and forth You know previously to this and then

they come back to the present day and you got

all these little mini flashbacks And hey, look,

so far, no, uh, no decades from now. Finally!

It starts out, Gotham Transit Authority between

the Atlantic Ave and Park Row stations. Yeah,

because they can't just actually collect crime

alien. You know, we get to see, we see Shrieks

kind of turn to leave. He's kind of, it's kind

of the whole we don't need you to patrol these

tunnels these are under my protection and for

being a big comic nerd like me this reminded

me of the venom lethal protector many series

from back in the 90s where they did that hard

pivot from like straight up i'm gonna eat your

brain spider -man yeah to where it become like

a violent and punisher -esque anti -hero so you

know we get shriek doing a face turn of sports

You know, he's been looking after the people

living down here. There's and we see something

going wrong with like the air defense system

in Gotham. It takes out this police cruiser and

then, you know, we see the flashback to like

what happened to Shriek and this is just after

and it kind of runs along the next few issues

is the top two thirds of each page is essentially

split into three different stories. Yeah. you

know we get batman trying to activate these hubs

you know barbara's uh you know talking to like

i think that's luke fox yep mayor yeah mayor

fox yep mayor fox and they're trying to coordinate

stuff with batman because of this hack we we

see shreve uh he's got like a sweet little subway

station you know crash pad we get uh and then

we see matt and max in playing this uh what did

they call that game i do not remember tribal

and oh yeah tribal when you see that overhead

shot of like the three courts and that again

this is how much of a nerd i am it reminded me

of the uh the sport pyramid that they played

on the new battle star galactica a few years

ago but you see essentially while running point

on this uh police action to, you know, solve

this hack. Mayor Fox is also, you know, emceeing

this game event and we see, you know, Shreve

deciding to become a hero and protect these people

because they don't have anyone else. And we get

back up top and we get this guy with like some

sort of cyber suit that essentially kerfluffles

the alfred ai in terry's suit yeah it does which

i don't remember if like i know bruce was building

a new one but didn't he say when he built the

new one that there was no ai anymore yeah because

it it says in the first page that this these

events take place not too long after terry comes

back uh... also okay so this is before the uh...

where they find bruce okay so this is before

the this is kind of before the uh... escaping

the race this is before the the experimental

suit okay yeah before uh... you know the hell

nine thousand students and i like the cult i'm

sorry terry i can't do that you know but we get

we get this guy that like you know this pokes

Terry with his cyber stick and it causes his

suit to reboot and then Terry takes off he's

got set off this other fuse box which is connected

this defense grid and we keep on the bottom part

the bottom strip we see the kind of origin of

this guy you know bohan and this is he's like

some hacker this is right as This is right his

brother I invades and I like on the top part

of the page is like look whatever your name is

He's like around here. They call me You know,

it's like they call me mr. Tibbs And the first

thing I thought was please tell me his catchphrase

is gonna be hack the planet Well, he looks nothing

like Matthew Lillard sure Yeah, although and

don't get me wrong. I love that movie How in

the hell is the fashion district beating Gotham

Heights five to zero? Oh my god Well, the thing

is watching that game He got this the black kid

with like the cornrow braids and I was like Wow,

Jayden Smith's kind of a prick Because I mean

I don't think he was explicitly it's just I just

remember Jayden with that hairdo from like the

karate kid remake And yeah, and you know we get

back, you know Hacker is like trying to get Batman

out of Chinatown We don't know exactly what his

deal is yet. He's just like you Batman. He's

sending like cars after him You know the fashion

district is beating What was the other side the?

Gotham Heights Gotham Heights and we get back

to the origin something in the like Bohan's rig

his computer blows up when Brother Eye invades

and this somehow grants him, I'm gonna call it

cyber empathic powers where he can control technology

with a touch. And it's such that he is not, he

is not turned into, he is not borked by Brother

Eye's killer cyborgs. And it in fact causes the,

you know, this killer mantis bot to blow up.

And Terry gets to the second one, he's about

to turn it off, we get back to Matt, and he calls

in this bigger girl, Zari, to kind of be a defensive

end for their team. And Zari's just like, let's

do this. And then we get our second call back

to a classic episode of the Batman Beyond animated

series, where Freon Girl... Terrible trio. Yeah,

terrible tree was it free on girl or something

like that? It's the not invisible woman. Yeah

You know and We see, you know, Matt and Zari

are you know kicking Jayden's ass now we get

back to again, this is Post the you know, if

you wanted to include this in the animated universe

and again, that's tenuous at best we get back

to you know, not read, pardon me, not read Richard's

repairing this suit to like, you know, hold free

on together. Yeah. And what I love about this

opening here, Montrose district, Bay Ridge Research

Center, look at the sign, BNR, ha ha ha, because

you know, Batman and Robin, ha ha ha. No, I did

that one before. Yeah. The Iceman, call me a

thief. And you see Freon, like, I don't... Like,

Freon, so in the animated, like, in the Terrible

Trio episode, she just basically had coal powers,

but something has happened in this universe where

I guess they've been... It's radioactive, yeah.

It's this radioactive... She's essentially a

female version of Blight. Yeah. See, and Blight,

you know, just to skip on that, I mean, I...

He's obviously if you know Batman villain history,

he's obviously a way jacked up version of dr.

Phosphorus. Yeah More on that later, but you

know free on you know freezes Batman in radioactive

radioactive lime ice and she's like Clearly she's

not in her right mind because she's like confusing

Batman with her ex -lover Michael and we see

the origin like, you know, Michael rebuilding

this suit to kind of hold her together. And then

just as, you know, Freon's about to kiss Batman,

Hacker and Shreve show up. And I like the kind

of super heroic anti -hero team -up moment where

Hacker, you know, he can upgrade. It's kind of

like a heart, was it heart, not hard drive? he

was in the batman he's the one had that cyber

arm that could like oh god yeah i think it's

hard drive or something like that but he he just

lays hand on shreeve's gear and gives it like

a power boost and we see you know you know the

fashion district is not holding as much sway

as they did because gothamite scores finally

we see freon you know uh The suit isn't perfect

because she nukes I'm not Michael, but it's the

Howard is the other guy. Yeah, Howard the other

guy and You know, we kind of get out from You

know clearly by by the end of it Gotham Heights

wins or at least ties up the game. Yeah Terry

and we see you know, like again Howard dies because

he the suit wasn't Sealed properly which again

is kind of could be kind of a not the fantastic

for origin that the shields weren't strong enough

on Reed Richards rocket ship But we get the you

know hacker and Shreve have shriek, you know

have saved Batman, you know Shriek says in the

that girl. I have the little redhead girl that

Batman talked to earlier told me what you did,

you know We're cool, man. We're cool. And now

we got a terrific trio of Gotham fighting Freon.

I mean, I'm glad that Shriek is doing good instead

of bad. The hero thing. I was really surprised

that he wasn't still going to do the villain

thing. Yeah. But I mean, I don't know if this

Shriek has the deafness. That the animated series

Shriek had yeah, you know by the end of it he

has to wear like the The head the little headband

and it's kind of like the pipe piper and the

flash theory is how he has to have those Implants

in his head and you know Batman and Shriek kind

of hold down Freon will hacker you know fixes

the defense grid which is Basically Freon was

gonna use that to level Gotham in revenge because

she's not in her right mind and then hacker,

you know shoots out this cord from his staff

that like what do you say he recalibrated her

suit and Right, you know Terry's like schway

I still got time to catch the games and hackers

like maybe we can work again Batman over dim

sum and then he's like and I like just hacker

and shriek is like, uh -oh popo time to motor

and again, this is On the same level, I'm telling

you right now, I'm giving this a four and a half,

just like I gave Batwoman Beyond. You know, it's

a solid... You know, it's a solid filler. It

introduces, reintroduces, and introduces new

characters. We've got another potential future

rogue for the Bat family gallery. Yep. And, you

know, it sets stuff up for future stories, which

may or may not come to pass. Hacker might only...

might only show up here who knows yeah I mean

I hope he shows up you know in the future but

I mean having it here and introducing here is

more than fine with me oh yeah but I mean yeah

overall like these are two great issues folks

it's you know highly the whole series overall

in case you haven't figured it out by though

me and Mike both love this series obviously yeah

and uh... i find this highly highly timely for

me the uh... the bottom part of the final page

of this issue next back to the future episode

three hundred to three oh four the poll bag we're

doing idw back to the future coverage so there

is that uh... but you know the uh... you know

issues 12 and 13 absolutely wonderful wonderfully

done the guest team on on issue 12 was was amazing

having bernard and marcello do issue 13 just

a genius idea and maybe dan needed a break maybe

he wanted to go do something else like you've

said several times before um i don't know how

long it's going to be but um The Next arc is

the long payback and so far there are two parts

to the to it at this point I I just like the

seeing what I know and we'll get to this eventually

folks the Juergens is writing but it is not You

know Bernard Chang, it's Phil Hester. He's back.

Oh, yeah, and Andy Parks on inks and There are

this is so perfectly so there are is so perfectly

suited to the you know Batman Beyond Yeah, absolutely.

Oh, yeah, I mean like I first noticed Phil In

the Kyle run Because he did I think he did mark

of the phantasm for that that series Pretty sure

pretty sure but but yeah I mean I loved his art

there and I cannot I haven't even looked at yeah

he did yeah he did do the the art for that one

yeah I cannot wait to read these because I do

really love his art and I can't wait to see what

he does compared to what he did and not that

I'm comparing the two but just to see that like

if he comes with a different style with it or

if he Uses a similar style to what he used before

obviously as we said the 2013 2014 Kyle Higgins

run was Specifically DC animated universe and

this is not which is fine So that's what has

gotten me interested to see what Phil is gonna

do with the long payback the next arc here With

the Batman Beyond Rebirth series. Oh, yeah, and

you know, like I said, it's it's great to see

Phil Hester's art in here. I mean I'd seen him

stuff here and there over the years, but I think

one of my favorite arcs that he ever did was

the first couple of story arcs on the Green Arrow

series that came out in the early thousands where

they brought Olly Queen back from being dead.

It was the Judd Winnick run, basically. Cool.

Very very cool. Alright folks. I think that's

gonna do it for us here on the pull bag episode

299 Next time I don't know exactly when it's

gonna be happening It might be a couple of weeks

from now who knows but next time will be episode

300 of the podcast where optimus solo will be

arcs where we talk about the three The first

three volumes of the ongoing series, we're going
