About this Episode

Mike talks Star Wars toys with two Pop Culture Network hosts—Pixel Dan and Flava Dave—who share extensive collecting histories spanning vintage figures, modern releases, and obscure crossovers. They discuss the evolution of Star Wars toy lines from 1977 to present day, favorite characters and upcoming waves on vintage cardbacks, the appeal of Disney-fied Star Wars figures, and display collection challenges. Each host showcases a personal piece from their collection.

Sentinel, online. Now loading the Geekcast radio

network of podcasts. Cliffjumper, commence countdown.

Five, four, three, two, one. Hello and welcome

to the 77th episode of Toycast. I am TFG1Mike

and joining me today are two of Pop Culture Network's

members, Flava Dave, hello sir. Hey, how you

doing Mike? And the infamous Pixel Dan. Oh, I'm

infamous now? What's going on Mike? Oh, not much.

How are you guys doing? Good? Yes. I am great.

One of the reasons why I'm having these guys

on this episode is because, as most everybody

knows that listens to us over at Geekcast Radio

Network, I do weird numberings for episodes in,

well, episode 77, 1977. That's when Star Wars

first came out, so... Yeah, I actually just got

that before you started. It was the 77th episode.

I'm like, oh! I intentionally planned stuff like

that, so... Like episode 88 is going to be about

Back to the Future. Nice. Wait, Back to the Future

was, oh, because 88 miles an hour. Yeah. I was

going to say... Got it. Well, it's either going

to be episode 88 or episode 90. Or episode 1

.21. Oh. 1 .21. Wow, yeah, that's a good idea,

actually. So we are here and for those of our

listeners at GeekCastRadio .com and the GeekCastRadio

network, why don't you guys tell a little bit

about yourselves? Dave, you can go first. Well,

you know, I was alive back in 1977. I was six

years old and Star Wars really kind of hit my

world like a freight train and I had all the

figures. I didn't quite have all the toys, like

some of the expensive ones. But and it just,

you know, I was into toys when I was a kid. I

loved action figures. I hit high school and kind

of got out of it, went through college. And then

right after college, I actually got Steve Sandsweet's

guide at a convention. And like like a couple

of months after that, Hasbro announced that technically

it was Kenner announced they were bringing back

the Star Wars line. And it just it just keeps

mushrooming from there. It just keeps getting

worse. So I've, you know, got this huge ridiculous

Star Wars collection that just won't stop. And

Dan, why don't you tell our listeners a little

bit about yourself as far as your toy collecting

and geekdom. Alright, well, uh, unlike Dave,

I was not born in the 70s. I am an 80s kid all

the way. I was born in 82, right? Filthy youngling?

So of course my first real, uh, Toy Love and

Exposure was the stuff like Masters of the Universe.

And that's been a big part of my, was a big part

of my childhood, so that's of course a big part

of my collecting now. But Star Wars is one of

those things that kind of kicked off my whole

collecting habits, I guess I'll call it. Star

Wars kind of started that entire thing for me.

I, of course, did not see the movies when they

first came out because I was born in 82 and Jedi

was in theaters in 83 and I was not, you know,

not in any shape to be going to any theaters

or watching any movies at that time. But as I

started getting a little older, crazy enough,

I was really kind of getting into Star Trek.

And I was watching Star Trek The Next Generation

with my dad a lot. And it was about that time

when he said, you know, I bet you would really

like the Star Wars movies. And we rented them

all and he sat down and he watched them with

me. And it was like my brain exploded because

that was just it. I was a Star Wars nerd from

that day forward. And I was, you know, I fell

in love with it. And then In 95 when Kenner released

the new line of figures and I came across them

in the store that's just when I was completely

struck and hit with that bug. So I never had

any of the actual vintage toys when I was younger.

It all started with me with the 95 collection

and moving on from there I mean it's just that's

where my real toy collecting habit started was

right there in 95 by picking up Luke and Vader.

And then flash forward to September of 2010 with

that rocket firing Boba Fett. Yeah Sore subject

I know I Think Dan's a little more heartbroken

about it that I am cuz I'm used to being like

let down in this regard I remember going to the

mailbox every day and then you you get the Boba

Fett and it's like why doesn't the rocket fire

and you're pulling on it? Yeah Didn't experience

that you went on it. I didn't experience that

letdown, but uh yeah, man Oh, I was so excited

about this figure, and then I'm like it's Dinged

up and the packaging is broke. I was so sad Thanks

Hasbro. I am I've told this little story before

but just to give Just to give you guys some some

background on me as far as toy collecting I had

literally almost every single masters figure

from the vintage line back in the eighties. The

only thing I didn't have was a lot of the vehicles

and I didn't have Palace of Eternia. I had Snake

Mountain, I had Grayskull, I still have my original

Grayskull. It was the only one of three things

I was able to salvage from my childhood. The

other two are the original Donatello and original

Leonardo which are now severely paint faded.

So in 1986, a lot of my master's figures were

at my dad's house in Rhode Island. So I go down

there and go in my little room and was getting

ready to play with Skeletor and Snake Mountain

and all of a sudden the room is empty. I'm like,

Dad, where's all my toys? You're six years old.

You're too old to play with toys. I sold them

all. I'm like... Six? Yeah, six. Six is when

I was just getting into it. I know. Holy cow!

I know. I could be rich right now if I had all

those. When you were six. Yep. Man. That's harsh,

dude. I thought my dad was a drug addict. That's

like life scarred right there, man. I know. That's

why I, you know, my great - Because I don't think

I even hit the, your - I'm too old for toys phase

until I was like 11 or 12. So having all my toys

ripped away from me when I was six would have

just devastated me. Yeah, I mean, I was six when

Star Wars came out and I remember, you know,

Dan was talking about how his dad kind of brought

him in. I remember we were on vacation with the

family and all my cousins were like about 10

years older than me. They're all teenagers and

they're all going to go see this movie and they're

all excited about it. And I'm like, oh, can I

come too? And they're like, nah, you wouldn't

like it. And it was Star Wars. And it's like,

I've been proving them wrong for 30 years. Oh,

is that what it's all about now? It is. Yeah,

it's a contest. But, you know, I mean, what I'm

saying is like, the figures didn't even come

out till I was seven. And that was like, that

was my beginning. That was when I hit the on

-ramp. I can't imagine anybody thinking a six

-year -old is too... I don't know what dad was

thinking at the time, but So moving on um before

we get to the discussion topic I have to ask

Dan a question What is the whole team Skeletor

versus team randor thing? Well if I tell you

I would have to kill you Okay, well it started

as a joke on one of our one of our podcasts the

it figures podcast You know cuz it's kind of

in the height of that whole Twilight crown with

team Edward and team J. Okay, and So we just

decided one day on the podcast that we were a

part of team Skeletor and You know, we were saying

it through the podcast and just joking around

and it just kind of grew into one of those things

where You know listeners were sending us emails

saying like go team Skeletor Yeah, I'm on team

Skeletor and the people were posting on our forums

doing the same thing and it just kind of grew

from that So it's just been this ongoing joke

ever since then, you know, you know, there's

team Skeletor and team randor Team Merman And

then guys like Dave like to create their own

teams their own little sub team And now you're

on team pawpaw, aren't you? All right, so I think

we're gonna get into the discussion topic which

surprise surprise is Star Wars toys Yes, where

do we want to start with the discussion topic

guys? Cuz I honestly have nowhere I just thought

because of the episode number we could talk about

Star Wars, but I have honestly no idea where

to start with this. Back in the Christmas of

1977, the children of America got an empty box.

An empty box and a promise. No, well that was

the thing is that Kenner just wasn't prepared

for Star Wars to be a big hit. That's right,

they did the early bird box, right? They did

the early bird box to get something in stores

for Christmas. And you got a certificate, and

if you mailed it away, you got a Luke, a Leia,

a Chewie, and an R2. And then figures actually

hit stores in 78. Did you get one of those? No,

I actually did. No. The first figures I got were

at a store in 78, and it was Chewbacca, Tusken

Raider, and an R2 -D2. And this one kid in my

neighborhood, Peter Brash, was on vacation and

picked up a Jawa. And it became this obsessive

thing with me where I had to have a Jawa. And

I drove my mother insane. And to the end of her

days, if you started talking about Star Wars

toys, she would start going on about the damn

Jawa that you just had to have. And we drove

to every store in town for a month because you

wouldn't shut up about the Jawa. I'm like, yeah,

and if we'd gotten it early, it would have had

a vinyl cape and we could retire to Tahiti. Oh,

man. What do you guys prefer as far as size with

these things, as far as the figures go? You mean

like the scale of the figure? Yeah. Well, it's

pretty much been a three and three -quarter line

from the jump. Hasbro, for a while, they're in

the aughts, I guess is what you call them. And

in the 90s, they were always trying to get a

larger scale. like a five or section scale, and

they did all these attempts to try to get a scale

like that to work, and it never succeeded. And

then I think, you know, the economy shifted,

and oil became more expensive, and they just

sort of gave up on it. But they were always trying

to change the scale, and it never worked. I mean,

they did 12 -inch dolls, and, you know, those

sort of sold okay, but they gave up on those,

too, and gave those to Sideshow, eventually.

Yeah, yeah, it's three and three -quarter inch

all the way because that's the only way you can

get these vehicles And that's that's why they

were designed that way to begin with is they

were trying to figure out You know, we're gonna

have all these vehicles all these spaceships,

you know, we got to make it cost -effective So

that's why they came up with that scale Yeah,

I think three and three -quarter inch just It

works the best for those. I couldn't really even

imagine having Star Wars figures in a bigger

scale. That just doesn't even seem to excite

me. Maybe it's just because I'm used to it, you

know? They've always been three and a quarter

figures. So that's just the way I'm used to seeing

them. But you're totally right. There's no way

we could get the vehicles or even the play sets

and the dioramas and the stuff that we've gotten

for these if they were in a larger scale It would

just be it'd be too massive and the vehicles

would especially nowadays Yeah, the vehicles

and the play sets would just cost way too much

and the manufacturers wouldn't even want anything

to do with it Yeah, I mean we we got the the

big Millennium Falcon this year. We have the

big add -at those things would not exist We were

in the five inch scale and they almost you know,

that's the story. They almost did that playmates

when they brought it back playmates made a bid

for star wars in the 90s and there are prototypes

of like you know those star trek figures are

they just like those they're they're similar

like those there's a stormtrooper and i think

a luke that that pictures have have emerged above

and they're kind of like star trek versions of

of those figures You know what, now that I think

about it, I would like a series of Star Wars

figures that look like those Star Trek figures.

Now I don't want those to replace what we have,

but I think that would be really cool, because

I really like the Playmate Star Trek stuff. I

think it'd be cool to have Star Wars characters

like that, but not to replace what we have, though.

That'd be something fun in addition to the three

and three -quarter inch stuff we have, but...

Yeah, in some ways I've always kind of wished

that they would change the scale because that

would be like a break and Like I could go okay.

It's done. You know it's over period I could

go out with my life freedom Oh man, that's funny.

Yeah, the closest thing that I am probably ever

gonna come to Star Wars stuff, and it's not really

that I don't like it or anything, it's just,

like I said before, my collection is mainly Transformers

and, well, now, thanks to Dan Masters. You're

welcome. I think the closest I'm gonna come to

Star Wars is probably the Mighty Mugs. Oh, the

Mighty Mugs. Yep. You have some of those? I have

all the Transformers ones, I have all the G .I.

Joe ones that were released, and I have maybe...

15, 16 Marvel ones? Really? Yeah, I've got a

lot. I couldn't not get into those. I tried.

I thought the concept was kind of neat and I

picked up a few of the Marvel ones, actually.

I had like the black suit Spider -Man and Doc

Ock and Ghost Rider, I think. But it was one

of those things where I got them and I opened

them out of their boxes and I put them on my

shelf and then like a week later I looked at

them and I was like, ah, I'm bored with these.

And then that was kind of it, you know, I didn't

ever get any more. But I know that there is a

pretty big market out there for them. A lot of

people really like those. Yeah, I would like

to get into the Star Wars ones for the most part.

But the problem with the Star Wars ones, because

I mainly shop at BigBadToyStore .com. That's

just it's just easy for me to shop there and

it's it's less hassle than pretty much anywhere

else online. You don't have to pay. I like that

site too. That's a great. You don't have to pay

insane scalping prices like you do on Amazon

and eBay and all that stuff. I mean, you know,

some of their markup is is kind of questionable,

but for the most part, they're fine, especially

for the mighty mugs. And the problem with it

is a lot of the Star Wars stuff is constantly

sold out and they never restock. So that's been

my problem with that. I do have a buddy of mine

sent me a big box full of Transformers. I was

mainly wanting the optimal Optimus from Beast

Wars, but he put all this stuff in a box and

one of them was the Transformers crossover Millennium

Falcon. So I do have that. I mean, I think the

Star Wars toys are awesome. It's just, I have

no room. There's no way in hell that I can put.

And yeah, I mean that's the thing dude if you're

gonna be a Star Wars collector You've got to

be willing and ready because like it's lost.

Yeah Exactly, you need the shelf space because

they're just gonna keep coming out with crazy

new stuff And they're always gonna find a way

to suck you back in because that's what always

happens to me I always get to a point where I'm

like, you know, I've got all this Star Wars stuff

I have so many Star Wars toys. I think I'm okay

with this for a while. I'm gonna cool it I don't

need to buy any of the new stuff and then they

go hey Hey, Pixel Dan, check out this big old

Millennium Falcon. You know you want this. And

I'm like, oh my god. And then they're like, hey,

hey, Pixel Dan, check out these awesome new figures

on the vintage card backs. And I'm like, oh,

and then I'm right back where I was. I'm buying

everything all over again. So I mean, my rule

was that I was only picking up like characters,

new characters, new characters and new outfits,

you know. And even then, I've got, you know,

because Star Wars is so packed with characters

and, you know. that I just keep buying more and

more and more. And when they announced the vintage

stuff, I was like, you know, with the prequel

things, I'm like, oh, I can skip those. I don't

even care about those. And then you see them

on the cards, and you're like, aw. And then you

actually get them off the cards, and they're

so much better than the, because when they did

episode two and episode three, they were still

designing them with kids in mind. You know, which

means stupid, dopey action features, very static

poses. And these things have articulation, they

have cloth outfits, they have these amazing sculpts.

And it's just like there's so much of an improvement

that, you know, this whole wave that I thought

I could skip, I like bought. And like this other

wave that I anticipated skipping, I'm like actually

looking forward to now just to get these characters

updated and get these old junky things off the

shelf. So Dave do you have I mean outside of

stuff that hasn't come out yet or stuff That's

in stores that that you haven't picked up yet

Do you currently have every single Star Wars

figure that was ever real? No, no, no Probably

not even close probably maybe 70 to 80 percent

of what's been released in the modern era. That's

and then vintage stuff I'm missing a lot. That's

still a huge collection Like I said, I mean,

you know, they do like another version of Luke

and I'd skip it They do another version of Han

and I'd skip it, you know, another version of

Darth Vader and I'd skip it So, I mean, you know

that it doesn't add up enough like in terms of

my checkbook But it does add up, you know that

that that I am missing a certain portion of things

and then a lot of like the Clone Wars figures

I skipped early on and a lot of the prequel figures

actually like, you know, cuz they would just

each movie They'd remake the same Jedi. So I'd

skip those So if it's somebody I already have

a figure of, I probably don't have like the second

and third version of. But like I have every character

they've done, I have a figure of. So. Jeez. Yeah.

I always say I wish you guys could actually like

walk in and see Dave's collection in person,

because. We've done videos showing his stuff,

but it's nothing until you actually walk in that

room and see all those Star Wars figures on the

shelf. I know, but the videos are still... The

videos do it some justice, because I mean...

Oh, okay, you're right. You're right because

it's it's incredibly impressive. I just I'm so

jealous of your setup Dave I'm so jealous and

the funny thing is every time I see a video it's

like wow, that's so old. It doesn't even have

this Every picture every video. It's always like

inaccurate, you know, it's because it's like

well that's changed 20 more figures in that one

little tiny spot that was open and see that's

the that's the thing with doing collection videos

or anything like that for YouTube or wherever

else you're going to publish it online, your

collection is constantly changing, so it's never

going to be accurate. That's why I refused to

do one for as long as I did, and then I finally

broke down and did one. But yeah, that's exactly

how I feel. Not to mention the fact that I'm

never happy with the way it's set up. I'm at

this point where I'm just like, it's not the

way I want it yet. It's not the way I want it

yet. Why do I want it to show it to anybody?

It's not the way I want it yet. Yeah, I'm the

same way see I don't like I'll buy stuff and

I'll you know I'll put like the newest figures

that I've got Obviously Skeletor Hordak Randor

are the newest things that I've gotten in and

like I've got Skeletor, you know standing on

my little part of my desk here But that's it.

I don't I'm pretty much a display only kind of

guy. I Don't sit there and you know have Skeletor

swinging his staff at Randor. You know, it's

just... I maybe do that for a minute or two after

I first open them up. And then I do a thing on

Pop Culture Network called Life in Plastic where

I take pictures of them and add captions to make

it like a comic strip. So, in a way, that's my

way to play with my figures, is to do that strip.

But otherwise, yeah, they pretty much get put

right on the shelf. a second or two after being

ripped out of their packaging. In my case, it's

funny. It's gotten to a point now where I get

a figure and I'm like, oh, well, I can't even

open this yet because first I got to film the

box. Yeah. And then I can open it up, but then

I got to film the figure. So that whole thing's

completely changed for me these days. But yeah,

I'm the same way. Once I get done, kind of like.

experimenting with the figure and checking everything

out on it and getting everything done I need

to get done it just sits on my shelf I pose it

and display it now I do kind of do the thing

where every once in a while I'll go in and I'm

ready to change things up I'm bored of the way

they are so I will reposition them and set up

different scenes and stuff but yeah generally

yeah that's all I do is I display them on the

shelf I don't do that intentionally but like

just at there always comes a point where you

got to make more room so yeah it's moved around

And that's how it all gets shuffled around, but

I don't just go, well, I'm bored of this. I think

I'll kill an entire afternoon and evening moving

all this stuff around. Move all the Clone Wars

from this side of the room to this side of the

room. Yeah, that don't happen. In fact, it's

funny, because you can kind of... When I set

it up, there's a plan, and eventually you get

to a point where it's kind of like there's a

certain amount of drift. so you can sort of see

where I was going for a Justice League thing

or I was going for a Clone Wars thing but it's

drifted into like the bounty hunters or you know

because it's just like there was just a little

more room there and I got more bounty hunters

that you know four or five months period that's

that's funny and Dan you're how much Star Wars

stuff do you have because it doesn't seem like

I've seen your collection stuff and it doesn't

seem like you have a whole heck of a lot of room

in your your display room yeah Well, that's that's

kind of the thing right now my display room is

very lacking in the Star Wars department Which

really makes me sad because I don't have room

to get it all out right now Most of my stuff

is in totes and they are jammed in my closet

and my storage unit which stinks but I've got

a ton because when I first started buying these

back in 95 and probably for the first several

years they were out I was one of those guys that

had to buy two of every figure so I can leave

one in the box and open the other one so I still

to this day just like probably most Star Wars

collectors have like piles upon piles of those

old power of the force you know red and green

cards still in the box and you know all those

figures I just have mountains of those and those

are all you know Go ahead. I have I have three

of each of those because I like got one to open

one to keep on the card and I'll sell one down

the road and make a fortune ha ha ha Well, I

think that was everybody's line of thinking when

those figures came out because of the vintage

figures. And then it's gotten to a point where,

you know, they just produced so many of those

and everybody bought them with the same intention

that those have become pretty much worthless

now. You know, the stuff from 95 to 99 is like,

no, no, everybody's got that stuff. Nobody wants

to buy it. So. But yeah, I have tons of that

and then you know I've also got you know totes

full of all my loose stuff And I've I've got

you know all my cool little diorama scenes like

Jabba's palace and the Cantina which I wish I

could get all those I got the Cantina set up

in my room right now It's one of my few Star

Wars things I actually have set up But uh you

know I used to always say I've got a huge army

of stormtroopers and a huge army of clone troopers

Because I used to have them displayed where I

had like a whole shelf that was just my empire

So I had like, you know, Vader and Imperial officers

and the Emperor and then just, you know, tons

of stormtroopers lined up behind him. I was always

really proud of that. And then I did the same

thing with the Clone Wars. I had my Army of the

Republic there going on. So I have a lot of stuff.

I just have nowhere to put it right now. I really

wish I did have somewhere to set it all out.

One of these days I will. And of course, it would

be a big life change, but you need one of those

houses with a walkout basement. There we go.

I just need a house period. I need to get out

of this tiny little apartment. That's the problem.

I've outgrown this apartment. Yeah. Have you

guys seen, I'm sure you guys have seen this,

but have you guys seen the Commander Cody 666

Bust? The code 666 Bust? The order 66? Yeah,

the order 66, yeah. I'm not really familiar with

it, I don't do like the busts and statues and

stuff too much. I don't know, it's the one that

just got, I don't know if it just got announced

or whatever, but I just, I had seen it on Big

Bad Toy Store and I thought it was very, very

interesting to say the least. Is it the one where

he's holding the little holographic version of

the Emperor? Yeah. Yeah, I've seen that. Okay.

That just looks really, really cool. What else

for the actual Star Wars toys do we want to talk

about or do we want to just get right into the

display case? Well, I was about to say, I have

the action figure of that. Oh, do you? Yeah.

They have an action figure where he's got the

little emperor thing. That's, that's... Oh, the

little, yeah, the little hollow emperor in his

hand. Yeah. I was, I love that. Order 66, that

whole thing's so cool. Well, I don't know, we

could talk about some of the newer stuff. I know

Dave's been buying a lot of the... new ones I

haven't been able to get as many as I wanted

and I also the ones I have I haven't opened yet

but you know Dave was already talking about earlier

how incredibly cool and detailed these things

are I think a lot of I think a lot of people

have a misconception that these figures are just

the same old rehashes you know the same old guys

that were just getting re -released and put on

these pretty new card backs and it's just Hasbro's

evil way to try to make more money oh sorry guys

my dogs okay shut up dog Because I've seen a

lot of people talk about you know that it's just

oh, it's the same figures again And you know

they're just putting it on these pretty boxes

to try to get more money out of us But you know

it's it's not really necessarily a true fact

and you know Dave was talking about earlier how

These these yes, they're the same characters

again. I mean that's kind of the way it goes

with Star Wars figures They're always gonna keep

bringing out, you know, we're always gonna have

Luke's. We're always gonna have Vader's That's

just the way this is gonna go, you know That's

that's the way that you keep this line going

and keep children and newcomers interested in

lines So they can always be able to buy these

main characters. Oh, yeah It's the same thing

with transformers. It's you know, the you make

a mold of Bumblebee and you repaint it as Cliffjumper

16 times, you know Yeah, I mean like these these

these like especially the the prequel ones like

those that really surprised me I mean, there's

this amazing General Grievous figure and someone

has told me that it's actually a reuse mold from

a grievous that I didn't pick up But I I don't

remember seeing anything like it. It's you know,

finally accurately sized Grievous is really supposed

to be pretty big And the figures have always

been kind of small. It's got the split -able

arms like he has in the movie. It's got a cloth

cape where he can hold the lightsaber hilts.

And it's just this amazing little piece of toy

engineering. And it just looks so cool on the

card. I really wanted to cut back this year.

And it's like I'm actually buying doubles of

stuff for the first time probably in a decade

just to have stuff to keep on the card. Yeah.

See, I'm the same way that Dan is with the whole

buying two of everything. For Transformers, I

have to buy two of everything so I can have it

in one mode and then the other mode. For Masters,

I want one out of package and I want one in package.

See, I stopped doing that for a long time with

everything. I got to a point where I was like,

you know what? I'm just straight gonna open everything

now. I'm an opener. I wanna open up everything.

But now that the master stuff is out, yeah, I

get two of all the master's figures at least

because I've got my open one and then I've got

my carded one hanging on the wall. So, there's

certain ones I don't feel the need to have two

of, but yeah, I've totally gone back to the whole,

gotta have two of these. I like these too much.

I gotta have two of them. And I'm really really

refraining from making a Pokemon reference As

far as the new stuff that's coming out on the

vintage card backs Are there any characters that

you guys are most excited about that you don't

already have? Hmm, I am really excited about

the stuff coming out in the return of the Jedi

wave Mostly the Admiral Ackbar and the Gamorrean

guard. It's a trap. It's not that I don't it's

yeah, it's a trap It's not that I don't already

own them because I do obviously own versions

of these figures, but these two are the best

Looking versions of these two figures we have

ever received Well, and the thing is that wave,

you know, you said that we don't already have

but those figures came out in like 96, 97, 98.

They are, you know, a decade out of, you know,

sync with the rest of the line. So these are

the first updates for most of these characters,

you know, in years. And they're amazing. And

that's what I'm really excited about. I'm really

looking forward to the Wicket. Originally it

was supposed to be a two pack with Princess Nisa,

and I'm really kind of irritated that they dropped

her. But he does come with gear, like a second

set of equipment so that he can look like his

animated version. Oh wow, I didn't know that.

Yeah, and hopefully he'll be a little more in

scale because the original Wicked is like huge.

Like he's the size of a regular Ewok. Yeah, yeah.

But that's my point is that all these figures

really needed to be updated. So I'm really excited

that they're finally gonna get to it. Yeah, you're

totally right. And it's amazing sometimes too

when you look at these new updated versions.

And it's like one of those things where you never

realize that like... You might not have realized

that your old Admiral Ackbar figure looked that

off from his true look until you see this new

figure. And then you're just like, oh my god.

This one makes the old one look like a piece

of trash. Like, why do I even own the old one

now? I'm going to throw in the garbage, and this

is it right here. This is the only Ackbar I need

to own. You know, it's amazing what they've done

with these new ones. And I'm very excited to

see, just like Dave, most of those figures in

that wave. The Return of the Jedi wave is the

one I'm most excited for right now. Yeah, me

too. I think one of the main complaints I have

about a lot of toy lines, not just Star Wars

and not just Hasbro or Mattel, but toys in general,

if it's in line with a film or a cartoon or a

TV show or whatever, I don't understand why they

can't fully have screen accurate toys. You know

what I mean? Yeah, like why back in the day did

they not I mean did they not have the the ability

to do so why couldn't they make an original I

mean our articulation aside obviously you're

not gonna get The same articulation out of the

vintage Skeletor figure that you have out of

the classics figure You just not it wasn't available

then but I mean as far as design aesthetic if

you look at I know I'm getting off topic here

if you look a lot of the transformers beast machines

toys compared to the animated designs They look

nothing like what was in the cartoon. I think

there's probably a lot of different reasons that

kind of play into that, though. I mean, maybe

you have to look at it as what was designed first,

the toy or the cartoon. True. Because there's

a lot of cases where the toys were made before

the cartoon, and then sometimes they're going

to take artistic liberties to make the characters

look a little bit better for the animated series,

or a little bit different. The kid I mean obviously

the case with he man those toys were all out

before that cartoon was out I mean that cartoon

was designed to sell those toys, but you know

so Yeah, I am actually yeah, and I I agree with

you guys I I like that there. I guess you could

say reissuing or updating figures to have you

know more pleasing aesthetic and That's great.

What else is in the return of the Jedi wave?

um ackbar the Gamorrean guard wicket there's

um Like they call him by his name wolf, but it's

the klat two which has hasn't been made in the

new line yet So he's like one of those vintage

figures that hasn't been updated yet at all.

So people one of them One a job of skiff guards

one a job of skiff guards. Yeah, okay He's a

guy like the vintage figure had like the little

furry skirt thing Okay Who else is in that wave?

I get it all mixed up. You know, well, as Dan

will probably happily tell you, I'm old. He's

like 75 or something. Yeah, I haven't taken my

brain medicine yet today. In my day, we had an

onion tied to my belt, which was the fashion

at the time. What? The Simpsons reference. D

'oh. D 'oh. I don't know. Good stuff. It's all

good. Buy it all. There you go. Just buy it.

That's all you need to know. Buy it. Why do you

need to know? Why you gotta know specific? It's

got Star Wars printed on it. I was joking with

one of our guys at the store, Rick, about how,

like, Master's collectors are pretty much like

Star Wars collectors. It's like you print...

the master's logo on anything and people will

buy it doesn't matter it's got masters on it

buy it i kind of disagree with that got star

wars on it buy it well if you're a master's guy

i mean if you're a star wars guy it's got star

wars printed on it you're you're gonna buy it

You want it, you need it, you have to have to

have it. I guess if you're like a full on dedicated

collector, then yeah, that's the case. But I

see a lot of pickiness going on with the master

stuff, honestly. I mean, the master stuff, we

can talk about another episode. Actually, I'm

going to have Dan back for episode 83. Hey, works

for me. Like I said before I think for me because

and really like it's not that I don't like Star

Wars toys I do it's just like I said before My

main focus is transformers and every time I look

at the Star Wars stuff in the stores. I'm like,

oh Okay, there's Star Wars and the majority of

the stuff that's in my targets and Walmart's

here and in Louisville, Kentucky is the force

action lightsabers. There's maybe like two and

a half, three pegs of actual action figures.

The rest of it's all accessories or like I said,

the lightsabers and stuff. So I think for me,

the closest I'm gonna get to Star Wars figures

is Mighty Mugs. You know what's really funny

is I can almost say the exact same thing about

Transformers toys. So I know how you feel because

I have never been a Transformers guy. and there

have been a few occasions where I've gone you

know what this figure looks cool I'm gonna go

and buy it and then I get to a point where I'm

like maybe I want to start looking for some of

these other Transformers but I kind of do that

same thing where I look at them and I start to

actually stare at the Transformers toys in the

aisle and I'm like you know what I don't want

to get involved in this I just I don't think

I can do it and and I kind of have to hold myself

back I do have a very very small collection of

Transformers toys, but it's not there's not very

many there Yeah, I've got about a probably medium

-sized question of transformers, and that's actually

probably the only toy line that I can actually

go I like this one figure I will buy it and not

get sucked into the whole thing You know like

but you know over, but I've been doing that since

the 80s So I've got like a big chunk of figures

But I'm just saying like I don't have to get

like all of them. Exactly. That guy's cool. Like

Shockwave. I like Shockwave. I'll buy Shockwave.

I like Grimlock. I'll buy Grimlock. Yeah, I still

want a masterpiece Grimlock. I need to get one

of those. He's very nice. He's very nice. I highly

recommend it. One of the things for me because

I just got back into I just get into collecting

two years ago. So I mean, I'm pretty much, you

know. A newbie to the collecting thing but for

me the collecting even in the transformers line

I don't buy everything like and transformers

animated I buy the characters that I like. Oh

well that's probably been fun this year. Well

transformers animated yeah so let's not go there.

The generation stuff the only ones I wanted the

war for Cybertron at least out of the ones that

we've seen so far. I've never been into Seekers,

so I don't need Thrust, I don't need Dirge. For

me, it depends on character. If you look at my

shelf, it's mostly Transformers animated, Transformers

classics. I maybe have 150 figures, if that.

Compared to some people, that's not a huge collection.

Yeah, I think I have more than that. And that's

not even my main deck. You have a whole room

full of toys in general. I got a whole basement.

Exactly. It was like, don't even put up walls,

just put up shelves. You better hope that place

never floods. Yeah, we're on a hill. We've had

one small incident, but that was because the

lawn people screwed up the downspout and pointed

it into the window well. But other than that,

it's... Yeah, that was fun. Other than that,

I know we had a huge rain right after that. Use

Star Wars figures two by two in the arc. Well,

you know, the thing is, I used to have a dog.

I had a big dog that liked to snatch things off

the shelf. So everything is just naturally about

two feet off the ground. Just to keep them from

being eaten. Right. So so I kind of have that

natural defense going on anyway Yeah So I think

we're gonna move into the display case segments

And we're each gonna talk about a Star Wars toy

seeing as how as I said before this is episode

77 and it's a all Star Wars type discussion even

though we've rambled on a few different things

and the only Star Wars figure I currently have

is a Millennium Falcon Star Wars Transformers

crossover and I've said before in this episode

a buddy of mine sent this to me in a package

with a bunch of other toys and the first time

I first looked at it and pulled it out of the

box I'm like oh well first of all it has a bunch

of packing peanuts all over it second of all

it's a Millennium Falcon I'm like oh that's cool

and then I'm like wait why the hell does the

Millennium Falcon have golden fists in the side

of it oh it's a crossover toy and honestly this

is the it's been sitting on my shelf just for

this episode and it will probably go back into

the box because because honestly I have no inclination

to transform this thing whatsoever I don't even

want to try I just I like that it's the Millennium

Falcon I like that part but I just, I don't get

the point of the Star Wars Transformers crossovers

whatsoever. It's called money. It's called that

there are Star Wars collectors and Transformers

collectors and we'll try to get money from both

of them. A little, I don't even think I can,

oh yeah I can get the little hatch open. There

is like a little mini, I don't even think I can

get him out of here, oh yeah I can. I would say

it's maybe a half inch Han Solo that's inside

of the little cockpit thing on the top. Well

what's interesting about that line though is

there was a line for Star Wars Toys called, Galoob

had it, Action Fleet. Which had small scale vehicles

with little tiny figures. And the Transformers

are in that scale. So there are a lot of transformers

that were made, um, that, cause action fleet

got canned, um, with a lot of the other galoob

things. So collectors of action fleet will buy

the transformers just to have those vehicles

more or less in that scale. Yeah. Uh, uh, yeah.

Just saying man. I don't vouch for the transformer

aspect of it at all. Although the Death Star

one is pretty cool. I will say that the Darth

Vader mode and the Death Star mode are both pretty

sweet. I think... I don't even know what the...

I think this one turns into a Han and a Chewie

maybe? Yeah, it turns into a Han and Chewie split.

Yeah, there's no way in hell this thing is doing

the splits on my watch. There's just no way.

Yeah, there's... I think we were talking about

it before you were actually recording, but like...

Guess I see the I see the the point in those

and I think it's kind of a cool idea Because

there's so many you know awesome vehicles and

Star Wars that it you know makes sense to It

kind of makes sense. You know Hasbro owns both

of those properties. Why not make some transformers

out of them? I think my problem with them has

always been that the robot modes are so funky

looking that they Totally lost their appeal to

me right away. I've never had the I've never

felt the need to buy any of those because Don't

think I would I wouldn't want to display them

as just the ships because if I wanted to do that

I would just buy like the micro machines or something

else, you know and display the actual ships if

I was gonna buy those I'd want to buy them because

they're awesome Transformers robot guys that

look like Star Wars dudes and I would display

them in their robot modes I don't like any of

those robot modes. So they were a total pass

for me. Yeah, and again, like I said, I got this

Basically got it for free in a box that my buddy

sent me so I mean I'm not complaining too much,

but I Mean just seeing this thing there is no

way and I've seen some of the Marvel transformers

crossovers Yeah That's a topic for another day

But I mean I've seen some of those and I really

don't care for those and I just I really don't

care for these whatsoever either They just don't

And you know if, I know it would be blasphemy

because it's the Millennium Falcon, but if this

thing didn't have all the outer things, it could

technically be a frisbee. If you took the triangle

parts off the end of it here. You know what the

Millennium Falcon is, don't you? They had this

guy who designed the Millennium Falcon and he

didn't like it and that became the Rebel Blockade

Runner. And he was trying to explain what he

wanted the Millennium Falcon to be. and he was

he was eating at the time this is apparently

a true story it's a hamburger and then like i

think uh uh an olive or something or a pickle

like like for the cockpit he said that's what

i want the falcon to be you can't really blaspheme

star wars too much because lucas is probably

beating you to it yeah i'm not gonna be like

the guy that got banned from the star wars conventions

thank you What what guy the cost player or the

guy that was originally in the costume in the

films or something or other I forget I don't

know there was a news item about it It was oh

it was David something the guy that was originally

in the car in the Vader costume Cross was smack

-talking Lucas back during when they were filming

The Empire. He was bitter that he was not the

face of Anakin Skywalker. It's like, no, you're

a guy in a suit. You're big. That's your thing.

Just accept it, move on, and sell your autographs

at conventions for too much. Yeah, that's another

whole other topic. A buddy of mine told a story

to me about a certain Vulcan, so let's not go

there. Yeah, overall, I really can't recommend

the Star Wars Transformers crossovers. Just in

general and on principle, I just can't. It's

not my thing. If people like the crossover toys,

cool. But if it's something that you go to the

store and you say, oh, that's cool, they're really

not. Well, you know, there are these small things

called children that apparently... Buy a few

of these things and get some enjoyment out of

them I'm told and that's and then that's fine

if they want to market it towards kids and not

collectors But for collectors, this is something

I suggest you add dear collection All right,

so moving on from my negativity, let's go to

a pixel and what are you gonna be talking about

sir? All right. Well, I'm gonna talk about another

crossover because I'm going to discuss the Disney

and Star Wars crossovers. This is actually a

cool little line of action figures that are available

now, but only at the Walt Disney theme parks.

So you're only going to find them at Disney World

and Disneyland, which in a sense is a little

irritating because it makes these kind of hard

to get unless you can make a trip to Florida

or California. Yeah, I was going to say it makes

it very irritating. Yeah. Unless you're one of

the lucky guys that lives over there, you know,

then it makes them a little hard to get a hold

of. But the whole concept behind them is that

they're just little action figures of Disney

characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse

and all the mascots dressed up as various characters

from Star Wars. And I think they're like three

waves in now. They did like an initial wave which

was based off some original trilogy. Characters

they did like Mickey is Luke and Minnie is Leia.

I know that's kind of weird, you know Mickey

and Minnie and Luke and Leia that doesn't work

too well. Yeah, that doesn't work at all. Actually

no, that fits, that fits. We're gonna look past

that a little bit. Donald Duck was Han Solo.

Donald was Han. Yep. Goofy was Darth Vader. Okay,

that's that's scary. I'm sorry. That's really

scary because oh It's actually pretty hilarious

cuz you just got it's it's funny cuz it's like,

you know, I got this big Darth Vader But he's

got like the big huge goofy feet and then instead

of the Vader mask It's just goofy's face poking

out of the helmet and it's it's hilarious looking.

I love it They also did like a prequel wave or

they did like Mickey is Anakin and Minnie is

Padme which makes a little more sense than the

Luke and Leia thing, you know And then now they've

got a wave out now that I the newest wave has

got more like of a mixture I think I guess maybe

it is more it's return of the Jedi type stuff

cuz we got like Chippendale as the Ewoks Which

is so freaking cool. Yeah, that's and and then

they brought Pete into the line and made him

Boba Fett Oh my gosh, he's one that I don't have

yet, but I have got to get that figure Pete dresses

Boba Fett I'm surprised they didn't reissue goofy

as Jar Jar They did I didn't want to step on

Dan, but I was thinking when they were talking

about him as Darth Vader, I'm like, yeah, and

he's Jar Jar. Yep. He's totally Jar Jar in the

second wave there. Yeah. Yeah. And they did like,

they did like Stitch as Yoda and then Stitch

as Emperor Palpatine, which is kind of funny,

but both of those are really cool too. And Donald's

also Darth Maul. Darth Maul. Yeah, I've got that

one. He's awesome. Donald Darth Maul might be

one of my favorites out of the whole group. The

figures themselves, I mean, they're pretty neat

for what they are. They don't have a lot of articulation.

It's basically just the arms and the heads. So,

like, the heads move left to right, the arms

move up and down. They come with one accessory,

usually, like, you know, lightsabers for the

guys who have lightsabers. And, unfortunately,

they don't really hold their weapons very good.

They're not molded well enough to hold. Like,

the lightsabers fall out of the hands super easy.

Oh, so it's like Oracle with his spell book.

Yep, just like that. Yes, like my my Darth Vader

goofy will not hold his lightsaber at all My

Mickey's doing okay, but Vader Vader goofy just

does not hold on to that lightsaber But the I

don't know the novelty of the figures is enough

to get me excited I just you know if you're like

a big fan of Disney and Star Wars then they're

totally a perfectly cool combination and it's

just fun little thing to add to your collection

and You know, my life is a huge Disney fan, so

we actually make trips out to the Disney parks

whenever we can. So anytime I walk in and see

stuff like this, I'm like, oh, these are way

too cool. I have to own these, and I will grab

a bunch of them while we're there. Yeah, I don't

get out to Disney enough. I mean, otherwise,

I would buy, if I could get these things, I would

buy them. It's just, I pick up one or two when

I go to a convention somewhere, you know? Yeah.

But I love them. I think they're great. Yeah,

they are they're really really cool. I would

definitely recommend them For even if you're

just like a casual fan, right? If you if you

like Disney at all, then these little things

are awesome You know, they're just really cool

little guys to have and they make a really fun

little piece to add to your collection I think

those sound a lot more appealing than the Disney

Transformers The Disney oh, yeah I've actually

got a knockoff one of those of the middle -aged

optimists. Yeah, it's uh, the real ones are kind

of expensive Yeah, I think they were only available

in like the Tokyo Disney World. Yeah, that's

that's just crazy. So Who would you say is your

your favorite out of the ones you have Dan? Of

the ones that I own I'm gonna say the Donald

Duck dresses Darth Maul Just because he looks

so cool cuz you know his whole head all the way

down to his bill is Painted with like the red

and black tattoos like Darth Maul and he's got

like the bright yellow Sith eyes like he looks

freaking evil He's awesome looking But I also

have to definitely give a shout out to the Chippendale

dresses Ewoks Just because as soon as I saw they

were doing that I'm like, that's a must -own.

I must have Chippendale dresses Ewoks They come

with like a big stormtrooper helmet Because like,

you know, like the Ewoks drummed on it So they

get like a helmet and they're both holding one's

holding a like chips holding a little spear and

Dale's holding a club They just they're so cool

looking. Oh Man, that's that's awesome. Those

sounds so cool. Oh Man Alright, so Flava Dave,

who will you be talking about? Okay, mine's actually

pretty obscure. They're Boba and Jango Fett Key

Bear. It's QEE, and this is a company in Hong

Kong that make like these little vinyl figures.

That's like a big Asian thing, these little vinyl

figures. And when episode 2 came out, I'm not

100 % sure they're officially licensed even,

but I don't want to say one way or the other.

at a chain of Hong Kong theaters, you could get

these two little key bears that were painted

like Boba and Django Fett. And for whatever reason,

I was just surfing eBay, you know, in 2002, and

saw them for, I think, maybe 20 bucks total,

plus whatever shipping from Hong Kong, and bid

on them. So that's probably the rarest and most

obscure thing that I have in my whole collection,

are these weird little Boba and Django Fett bears

from Hong Kong. Whenever I take pictures of them

or show them, people are like, what's with that

Boba Fett mouse? What's the deal with that thing?

Because nobody knows what they are. Wow, I just

thought of another crazy crossover. He said Boba

Fett mouse. I'm thinking, okay, so either one

of them, Boba Fett or Django, they could be...

Jack and Gus from Cinderella. Pete's already

filled that shoes though. Boba Fett is amazing.

I have to own that figure. And Pete would have

to be Django Fett too, if you wanted to be consistent.

Oh yeah, because they're clones. That's right.

Oh man, that's funny. Alright, so I think we're

gonna take a quick break. We're gonna come back

with the outro stuff and You're gonna hear some

sort of audio after this. I don't know what so

on toy cast and It's been a really great time

talking to pixel Dan and flavor Dave from cop

pop cop cop culture network I can't talk tonight.

So, um, yeah pop culture network Why don't you

guys, I guess Dan you could probably do it, why

don't you tell us what's coming up on popculturenetwork

.com? We have always got a lot of cool stuff

coming up on popculturenetwork .com. So if you

guys haven't ever been there and checked it out,

why don't you... Take a peek, take a gander.

We got a lot of cool stuff. If you like toys,

there's lots of cool toy videos over there. We

got brand new episodes coming up of Radical Retro

Turtle Toy Talk, which is one of my personal

favorites on the site. Our buddy Sweene Halleck

every week takes a look at a brand new Ninja

Turtles action figure, which, you know, those

are pretty sweet. Ask Dave, he's getting hooked

on those now, too. Like I need something else.

So we got that going on. We have lots of toy

reviews coming up. I know we're in the midst

of reviewing the new DC Universe Classics Wave.

So those are getting posted. If you guys like

dolls, then you'll be happy to know that Deval's

reviewing a bunch of new Tonner stuff. I don't

know. Some of those are pretty amazing. Deval

loves those, dude. I know he does. Lots of those

reviews are coming up as well. And of course,

every Saturday is a brand new episode of That

New Toy Smell, where we always take a look at

a different toy line or specific figure or what

have you. Just a cool little toy from today or

yesterday. So every Saturday is a brand new episode

of that. I think that'll do it. I think that's

it. Did I cover everything? Did I get it all?

I think so. And check out Flava Dave's weekly

comic strip, Life in Plastic. I almost forgot

you Dave, there you go. Yeah, well, I almost

forgot this week too, so, fair's fair. Oh man,

I'm thinking of joining Team Randor, because

this damn Skeletor figure, I can't get him posed

now. He won't stand up, ooh. His knee just went

back, so he's, yeah, I haven't leaned up against
