About this Episode

General Tekno returns to discuss the Transformers Movie ice cream truck twins (Skids and Mudflap), covering their vehicle and robot modes, paint applications, and overall design. TFG1Mike talks about the Transformers Animated leader class Ultra Magnus figure, including its robot mode, voice clips, and what makes it stand out among animated leader toys. The episode also features the second GeekCast Radio Network trivia contest with a prize of Shout Factory's Transformers More Than Meets the Eye DVD.

Hello Hello and welcome to Transformers Toycast,

brought to you by the Geekcast Radio Network.

This is episode 14. I am TFG1 Mike and returning

from oblivion is General Techno. Hello, sir.

Hello. How are you? I'm doing alright, doing

alright. Still getting figures and stuff. Yes,

I've actually stopped getting figures. Well,

actually that's not technically true. I will...

uh... toy cast will live on it just depends on

when i can get new figures are get my you know

get my hands on figures uh... tomorrow i will

be uh... billed up by my mother as far as my

my financial situation goes right now uh... Did

before this even happened I ordered As people

will know in episode 13 Pekin court Michael,

and I did talks on purple shockwave and Rivaltech

Megatron I actually ordered myself a rival tech

Megatron and Rodimus, and I have to actually

pay for them tomorrow So those will be coming

in at some point Seen those or I've seen those

around nothing that I particularly wanted although

on the note of shockwave I did finally finally

last week. I got incredibly lucky and found the

gray shockwave at retail so yeah, yeah, I Well,

I like the rival tech because of all the poses

that it can do and for the accuracy that they

have And I found these for the two of them including

shipping. I believe it was 54 98 which isn't

bad. That's pretty good. $25 a toy plus $5 shipping

on each which is not bad at all. As far as Geekcast

Radio news goes we've had a ton ton of stuff

going on. Steve and I are currently in the middle

of recording Geekcast Radio episode 5 which is

the top 50 geekiest things. We actually have

to finish recording that so that will be that

will be I believe my third third long episode

i've had tfg one sixteen tunecast ten and now

gcr episode five uh... currently it's with all

the stuff we recorded in all the audio that i'm

putting into it in in between each each clip

it's sitting at i think two hours in 25 minutes

or something like that and we have like three

clips left to record and don't forget the insane

botcon comic conversation Oh, yeah. Well, that's

your fault. We're not gonna go into that. Oh

I only was responsible for one comic. Yeah Just

the fact that we were doing comics. Yeah, they

didn't other stuff after yeah Yeah, that's it's

more than fine You know so I mean that that's

pretty much what's been going on with us and

wire this week We're going to be talking about

the Bourne franchise all three Bourne films,

which I've been watching them all week so far

People may not know this if they don't go to

the Predacon Empire dot -com forums Tooncast

may actually be on hiatus for a little while

only because the next couple of episodes we have

coming up 14 will be gem 15 will be Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles 16 will be three Disney cartoon

not not 16 Itself, but 16 through 18 will be

three Disney cartoons duck tales tailspin and

dark wing duck well I have finally received my

dark wing duck DVDs I Don't have DVDs for any

of the other shows that I just listed so I want

to be able to get some DVDs before Before I do

more episodes of tooncast just because that's

I want to have that thoroughness and I don't

trust streaming sites because it just doesn't

give me the the in hand type of thing. It's like,

you know, you see a picture of TFA Rodimus from

BotCon, but you don't know how awesome it is.

I mean, you do from the pictures, but you don't

actually know how awesome it is until you have

it in your hand, which that used to come out

like now. And I will continue to say that on

every episode. So on to the toys. Before we get

into the toys, we are running the GeekCast Radio

Network second contest. This is our second contest.

It'll be a trivia question contest. All entries

must be sent to tftoycast at gmail .com. The

contest begins as soon as this episode goes up,

which will be tomorrow, September 3, 2009. The

cutoff time for entries is this Sunday, September

6 at 10 PM Eastern. All correct entries will

be put into a hat and a random draw will be done

in Toycast 15 airing next week. The trivia question

is, if you can tell us what item Optimus Prime

was carrying in the final scene of Transformers

Animated Season 3, you will win a copy of Shout

Factory's Transformers More Than Meets the Eye

single disc DVD. Again, if you can tell us what

item Optimus Prime was carrying in the final

scene of Transformers Animated Season 3 Endgame,

You will win a copy of shot factories more than

meets the eye single disc DVD From their whole

transformers Reissue that they're doing is that

the one that's just the three -parter and maybe

one or two other episodes It's just the original

five episodes is what's on there. I believe okay.

It's more. That's what I thought I The more than

meets the eye three -parter. Oh crap. I want

a space bridge Yeah transport to oblivion Countdown

not count down to extinction I don't know. It's

the first five episodes of the car is what it

is And we will run through the through the question

and the contest information at the end of the

show today Why don't you go first sir? All right.

Well, I've gotten in quite a few things lately

now just a general mix of stuff I got a big haul

last week just because of the fact that the Comet

Collectibles store right by my house was going

out of business. They moved all their stuff over

to one of the other stores in the chain, but

they had a 50 % off sale for their final day

on everything in the store, so I got a lot there.

But I'm not going to talk about any of that stuff

today. I'm going to talk about what I just got

earlier today. from, interestingly enough, one

of the other stores in the chain. I paid a bit

extra for it because I'm impatient, even though

it's been cited at retail, because I haven't

seen it yet. But ding -a -ding -a -ding, come

and get your ice cream. Ding -a -ding -a -ding.

It's the Ice Cream Twins, Skids and Mudflap in

their ice cream truck mode. I had to get this

thing because of the novelty factor. It's an

ice cream truck. Plus, it also fills my in -the

-movie criteria for buying figures from the movie

line, which is about to be completely destroyed

when the It's a G1 Homage rule comes into play.

Curse you, Hasbro. But yeah, anyway, I had to

pick up this guy. Jolt I can wait on, but the

twins... Well, it's an ice cream truck. How often

do you get ice cream trucks? It's like how we're

getting a it's like how We've already gotten

a biplane in the line who is awesome. We've gotten

the microscope who is also awesome and we're

getting a toaster So, yeah, the only thing that

we need for perfection really is a mountain dew

transformer I hate the movie line I can't say

it enough. I mean, I respect people that that

like it. That's fine and whatever else but I

respect people who can't get past the aesthetic

or anything but one of the great things that

I do like about the movie line is just a lot

of the we're getting to see a lot of alternate

modes which Normally wouldn't have been possible

but because of the budget attached to the movie

and the fact that anything with the movie tag

sells Plus the fact that Michael Bay's put some

unusual stuff in the movie We're getting some

pretty out there toys, which we wouldn't normally

get. Like when was the last time we got an ice

cream truck? Never. It's like how when we had

Signal Lancer at the tail end of Cybertron. If

Cybertron was like the movie line, we probably

would have gotten a Signal Lancer toy, which

would have been awesome. Because they detailed

the guy's entire transformation. I get that.

I get that it's nice to have stuff that you normally

wouldn't get as far as Transformers as far as

Hasbro goes. That's all well and good. But again,

I just, I want a new line. I want more universe

stuff. Or, you know, I will say it until they

come out. I want the new TFA toys that, you know,

the ones that are most anticipated. Rodimus,

RC, you know, stuff like that. I go into Walmart

and Target, and I just shake my head in the toy

aisle. And to be fair, the stuff that I'm anticipating

the most right now is actually the more universe

-esque stuff in the movie line, specifically

stuff like the later waves like Bludgeon and

Jungle Ironhide. I can't wait to get my hands

on those, for instance. And then there's the

animated stuff, of course. And then there's stuff

that I'm still mulling over, like... Fans projects

stuff has me drooling as well So like I'm tempted

to get the city commander set and then try and

see if I can find myself a Magnus after the fact

Well, I mean I've you know, I forget what what

episode it was. It might have been the BotCon

up Yeah, I think it was I think it was all BotCon

part two. It was episode 11 of Toycast where

I was talking about Shattered glass optimus and

just that day my nemesis prime came in The prime

or the shadow commander armor, I don't know the

prime the figure the toy. Okay. Yeah, I remember

that and My issue now is I want the friggin armor

You have no idea I was both happy and glad when

it had sold from the booth at TF con later in

the day because I was mulling over getting that

just because I'd gotten the nemesis prime that

weekend. Yeah, I As far as ultra Magnus goes

I like ultra Magnus the character In almost any

incarnation the main two that I've been been

exposed to is obviously g1 and Animated I like

the character of ultra Magnus. I don't like the

fact that they will not do a Separate mold for

him on any toy the g1 white prime is what ultra

Magnus was I I'd counter with I guess animated

and titanium. Okay, well Animated yeah, you have

to do it differently, but I mean just the general

You know classics type deal titanium was an all

-new Magnus mold, okay Well, you know it had

its flaws, but it was a g1 Magnus that I'd know

in between mode It went straight to the classic

Magnus mode. Yeah You know I don't think I will

ever own the classics Magnus unless I get the

classics prime Magnus to pack I won't ever buy

the City Commander armor. I just don't like the

way the Classics Magnus is. However, I do want

that Shadow Commander armor. That Shadow Commander

armor is awesome. And it would be a shame if

Fans Project did not make shattered glass armor.

Well, just make sure that when you get the Shadow

Commander armor, make sure you get the $10 weapon

pack as well for the shoulder cannons and the

gun. Because they're selling that separately

as well separately as well as with the new city

commander release that's coming. Oh really? I

didn't know that Yeah, it's separately listed

on all the stores So you can get the shoulder

cannons in the gun the shoulder cannons look

really nice and powered commander So yes, so

getting back to the ice cream twins. Yes back

on track What do you like the most about them?

Well, let's see vehicle mode. It's it's an ice

cream truck. The colors are pretty unorthodox

the biggest complaints I mean, the mold is actually

pretty good. Like, as people have remarked online,

it's not painted, but they actually molded a

lot of the rest on there. Like, there's a lot

of rough edges and stuff, and if you look at

it in the right light, you can see that there's

all kinds of rust detailing on there. Sadly,

none of it is painted. And really, the biggest

issue with vehicle mode that I have, aside from

the fact that it looks really accurate, but the

biggest issue I have is the lack of detailing.

But that's just a general Hasbro thing. Given

that you've got two Transformers in one here,

I can kind of excuse that. I don't normally pick

up Reaper label sets that often, but this is

one that I might have to get simply because he

needs to suck my popsicle bumper sticker. He

needs the stuff that goes on the back. There's

just so many details which he's missing, which

would look really, really good on this guy. Oh

yeah, and the only other flaw, and this is just

more as a typeface purist, is the fact that the

Made Fresh for You is written in ComicSonsMS.

Which I'm sure that many of you know why people

who tend to draw comics or anything hate ComicSons.

So, it's a scourge. Ah, yes. Anyway looking at

the robot mode for these guys or rather the robot

modes They're pretty they're they transform very

differently the it's not symmetrical or anything

Which is what actually what I was expecting when

I first heard that there was going to be an ice

cream truck transformer I figured okay, it'll

split into it along the half. So then you'll

have two identical twins But instead we've got

some modes that are in fact very reminiscent

of the larger deluxe toys Honestly think the

one that has them I honestly think that out of

the two I think that mudflap actually has the

stronger robot mode Part of that is just bulk

mud flap actually has he makes up a lot more

bulk than skids does He makes up more than a

half of the car and even then skids is half is

mainly hollow whereas mud flaps has a lot of

plastic inside of it So mud flap really has a

lot of heft. He's got some back kibble and stuff

but overall I think he came up better than Skids

did. Skids' big problem is just the fact that

the hood ornament which when it pops off for

the hood it does fold down a bit but it does

block his face somewhat. The robot mode paint

jobs meanwhile if this was one robot the paint

jobs probably would have been all right but again

it's two robots so they did skimp on the paint.

I mean I guess if they do have some detailing

which you don't normally see on a lot of Hasbro

stuff like If you actually look at the paint

apps, they've got the ice cream cones tampled

onto the side, and there's a good mix of colors.

They've got painted faces. They don't have light

piping, but the blue eyes stand out a lot better

than on the actual deluxe toys, I would say.

The eyes stand out a lot better. The face sculpts

are pretty much the same, just shrunk down. And

in different colors, of course. Yeah, the only

real negative about the face sculpts paintwise

is kids is missing his gold tooth But I don't

even know to be honest if he has the gold tooth

at this point in the movie given We barely got

shots of them in the ice cream truck mode. He

might not for all I know. Yeah He might get it

later But yeah, as I said, they're both They

both look okay. They're very short figures. They're

shorter than a basic to put it in perspective

Probably closer to a legends figure each in terms

of their size damn evil minicons No, no, they're

bigger than minicons. Oh, I know but that's when

when I see legends figures, that's what I compare

Them to is is minicons because they're so small

He comes are like plastic crack legends are the

new plastic crack Using original molds and stuff

more often, but yeah, I've got the legends animated

prime right in front of me. He's about the same

height as Skids in his robot mode. So yeah, they're

basically Legends sized. They might be good sizes

to go toe to toe with a Supreme class Devastator,

maybe a bit big, but actually these would probably

go very well with their Legends class counterparts

in terms of scale. I'm actually now thinking

maybe I should pick those up just to display

next to them. I was going to ask you how hard

was it for you to find these at retail now as

we all know you're in Canada and you know I'm

in the US and I don't really go looking for ROTF

toys so I mean how difficult was this for you

to find? Well I paid a bit as I mentioned I paid

a bit more for these I bought these actually

at a specialty shop in order to get them they've

come out in this area but I haven't seen them

yet the only ones I've seen from this wave are

dead end and blaze master I've been following

sightings on Cybertron .ca, which is the main

Canadian fan site, just local sightings. People

have found them, people have got them, but these

guys aren't sticking around. These guys and Jolt,

probably because they're both in the movie, they're

not sticking around very long, and no one's really

gotten them in large numbers yet. Toys R Us is

still on the, they've got large numbers of the

Mudflap Ravage wave, but they haven't gotten

this wave in yet at the local Toys R Us. So yeah,

I had to pay I had to pay a bit extra to get

my hands on these guys ultimately I think I might

have a Might have been a bit overpaying that

well it was overpaying, but they're pretty cool

figures even still Dude, I don't think anybody

can overpay for for transformers because I mean

yeah, you can but Okay, what? Okay, compare the

two prices, the original price point and what

you actually paid for them. Well, they're 15

at retail in Canada. I paid about 25 or so for

them. Okay, so you're paying $10 more, but you're

still getting them. Yes. I paid between Galvatron,

between the original G1 Galvatron, G1 Soundwave,

and probably two or three other toys from the

actual G1 line. Just those two to two alone.

I paid six hundred and something dollars total.

So I mean that's overpaying for transformers

Yes, but I wouldn't consider g1s in the same

but this is a bit different than g1 given that

these guys are actually out at retail that right

now When you're buying up stuff in retrospect.

Oh, no. No, I I completely understand that but

I mean You know For the toys that have been out

recently since I've gotten back into it like

classics like right Animated the movie line,

whatever, you know Every toy that I've seen at

Walmart and Target as far as like deluxe size

or you know a size like that or Even Voyager

size They range from like $12 to $20, which I

don't think that's bad Don't think they're at

all very bang for the buck when you consider

Just how posable they are and just what you can

get out of them, you know in terms of play value

Oh, yeah, very very much. So of course, you know

me being Christ almost 30 I basically buy toys

to display them. I don't buy them for play value

anymore I buy them for display, but I still like

to have some stuff on hand a fiddle with so yeah.

Yeah So yeah, do you have anything else to say

about the ice cream twins? Yeah, I've got a couple

more comments. They're pretty quick to transform

I would just I've been transforming them during

this discussion as I said paint apps in robot

mode now They've got them back in robot mode

again to look at just Probably the skids looks

better in robot mode in terms of paint apps But

that's because he's got the grill for his chest

unlike mud flap. Yeah so he's got quite a bit

of color break up there like he's got the uh...

clear plastic headlights he's got a bunch of

pink he's got a bunch of uh... couple shades

of uh... like black and silver and the wheels

and stuff but mud flap on the other hand mud

flap has a good amount of detail but he needs

paint yeah he's like mainly his body is like

pretty much pink is like pink and white and the

only real paint on him in robot mode is his face,

the Autobot logo, and the ice cream truck mode

designs. He has hand, for instance. He's even

got the oversized hand on Skids and molded in

a separate color, whereas on Mudflap, it's molded

in the same pink color. Looking at these guys,

what I suspect happened was that they were probably

two separate molds in terms of the plastics that

they used. Mudflap he has other than the wheels

Yeah, other than the wheels all of mud flaps

plastic is either pink or a white whereas on

skids It's either this dark. It's either this

dark Dark gray pink or white so he's got more

plastic color variety plus. He's got clear plastic

as well So really all of the all of the plastic

variety went in the skids Yeah The only thing

I can think of when you said one of them doesn't

have a grill think of the G1 episode where slingshot

needed a a chest plate or something and the little

kid gives him his or the prince of the country

gives him his Rolls Royce grill to put on his

chest No, who which which is the toy that which

which twin is the one that doesn't have the grill

mudflap. Okay mudflap. Well That's what I thought

of. Yeah, I was wondering which character in

G1 it was. Oh, the character in G1. What apparently

happened was... I think it was... It was the

episode Aerial Assault. Slingshot, one of the

aerial bots, gets... Okay. And the prince who

is in disguise and is basically spying on these

people, on these airplane hijackers for the Decepticons,

what happens is... Slingshot needs a grill or

a chest plate or he needs something to help fix

him up Well, this kid gives him his the grill

off of his Rolls Royce cool So was this the episode

which caused Casey Cason to leave the show or

was that in season? No season 3 that was probably

five faces of darkness because That's where I

think Carbamio was in season 2. Yes, it was but

it started At five faces of darkness is when

it was first mentioned. I believe I don't think

it was mentioned in I thought there was a car

bomb. Yeah episode in season two Maybe not that

might have been I'm not really sure pretty much

after the movie cliff jumper disappeared anyways

So yes, and the whole reason for that is they

made they went over their way to save him But

then he left the show because of car bomb. Yeah.

Yeah, because he's Libby and in Casey Jason is

a you know his his nationality he's Libyan Overall

on a scale from one to ten, what would you rate

the ice cream twins ice cream twins? I don't

normally do scales, but They're a unique toy.

They could use more paint touch -ups. I Think

I'll probably give them an eight and eight out

of ten based off their creativity and the fact

that Yeah, creativity. The sculpts are very well

done. The transformation is very well pulled

off And the only real thing that they could use

is some more paint in order to help them stand

out more. And like you said, they're what, 15

at retail? Canadian, yeah. Well, OK, well. Actually,

they're 16 Canadian. They upped the price a dollar.

I forgot. OK, well, I mean, I don't know what

that translates into US because I haven't gone

out and priced them. But I'm betting the reason

why there's very minimal paint apps is because

it would probably drive the price up. Well, it's

I think a lot of it just comes down to the fact

that they do have paint apps It's just that because

he's such a complex transformer. They can only

use them in they can't really use paint apps

everywhere And he's very complex and since he

turns in the two figures It's like how for instance

on sideways. He was lacking in robot mode paint

apps because they used silver all over him Mm

-hmm like they used a lot of white they used

a lot of silver and a lot of the paint went on

the skids so And then mud flap got the and plus

they had tampos, which they don't normally do

on deluxe is nowadays All right. Well, I think

we're gonna take a quick break and we'll be right

back These are serious charges and they will

be investigated Optimus Prime show us where this

supposed Decepticon battle took place Your crew

will remain here with jazz until this matter

is settled transform We are back and my pick

which is actually the last toy in my collection

that I can talk about until I get my Rivaltech

figures which we've already talked about Rivaltech

Megatron on this show so I'll probably only be

talking about Rivaltech Rodimus next time is

Transformers animated leader class Ultra Magnus

as we all know all the leader class robots come

in robot form which I do like and I'm just now

noticing at first when you were discussing your

your pick the ice cream twins Thought there was

something wrong with his chest because it looked

like there's a whole bunch of scrapes and scratches

and markings on it But it's not it's actually

on the black part. It's Cybertronian writing

or markings or something like right under the

Autobot elite guard signal right there in between

the blue and the gray There's a whole bunch of

like markings and at first I thought it was scratches

the robot mode. I truly truly enjoy I'm still

having difficulty with him, getting him into

truck mode. And once he's probably in truck mode,

he probably will never leave truck mode unless

I find another one. Finding him was just sheer

coincidence. I had gone up to Target. What was

I going up there for? It wasn't when the shockwave

sail fiasco thing happened. It was something

else. Oh, I know what it was. I was looking for

jazz. I was going to go up there and look for

jazz. And normally, I don't go beyond the deluxe

shelf. My vision just doesn't go. I don't end

up bending down and looking on the bottom shelf.

I just end up looking at what's at eye level

or immediate eye level. And I just so happened

to look down this one time, I found one liter

Magnus at my local Target. That was it. Only

one shelf. So I picked him up. You know, but

of course we all know that he has the the electronics

with the lights and sounds. Yeah I think it was

great that they actually got the original voice

actor to do that. I believe he doesn't like the

gotcha Who did voice in Jeff Bennett? Not sure

if Jeff Bennett did it or not. I don't know.

I'd have to look it up Not really sure but I

think it's good that they get whoever voiced

the character in whatever incarnation that the

characters in to do the the The voice electronics

for the toy, right? Yeah, it was Jeff Bennett.

So, oh, okay Well, I didn't know that I thought

he just did prowl. Okay. Well, he did prowl angry

Archer fan zone grandest and mix master Grandest

talked I don't think I heard him. Oh, yeah, that's

right. He did He's done some incidentals as well.

One thing I'll have to say though is with Magnus,

one thing that impressed me is he's got the most

demoralizing sound bites I think I've ever heard

on a toy. How many toys say don't try to be a

hero? Okay, well to to clarify to everybody what

he says is don't try to be a hero Optimus He

doesn't just say don't try to be a hero as generalizing

it It is a line from the show and I'm betting

that they had Mr. Bennett just do two or three

line. I mean, there's only three lines that he

says it's don't be a hero Optimus. We must return

the All -Spark to Cybertron and Ultra Magnus

here is what he says um... so uh... you know

i don't know if it was a thing of money because

as we all know voice actors get paid pretty good

for their voice work uh... and of course they

work for for unless they don't have any well

those guys make like a fraction those can make

a fraction of what you make uh... for other stuff.

Mind you, they're also non -union. Yeah. Well,

I just remember from going through all the 80s

cartoons on Tooncast where you had all these

excellent voice actors in some of the old cartoons

like Transformers G1, Thundercats and all that

stuff. They were only allowed back then to be

paid for three voices. So maybe that was something

with this that, excuse me, Mr. Bennett could

only do three sayings from ultra Magnus's I don't

think so. I think it was just a matter of them

only wanting to do three phrases for a figure.

Keep in mind the voice rule that applies to cartoon

recordings and that's the individual episodes

that they can pay them for one role for up to

three voices. Right. Right. And after that it's

extra. Oh yeah. Oh no. I mean I totally understand

that and I'm not saying what What I'm assuming

is to be right. I'm not saying it is fact. It's

just my opinion on what I think it could have

happened. The reason why those three voice clips

are the only three that are used. Could they

have picked better ones? Probably. At the time,

they probably didn't have much to work with other

than watching the pilot. Or... When did leader

man when leader Magnus came out in Christmas

of the year following the pilot? He probably

was due to come out a bit He came out of it shortly

before Christmas actually, but you need to keep

in mind the toys were Given the toy line was

pushed back by six months odds are that all the

lines were recorded before season two was anywhere

in a completed form so They probably did the

Magnus lines going off the Transform and Rollout

pilot. And they're clearly different recordings

as well, given that there's different inflections

and they don't be a hero line. Overall, I really

do like this toy. I'm hoping I can eventually

get him into truck mode. I've seen pictures of

the truck. I've seen reviews of the truck mode,

and I really do like it. I really like how, as

we all know, leader toys are supposed to be You

know the end all be all as far as tall transformers

When I had him on my shelf in robot mode he comes

up to be about maybe I would say a half inch

taller than G1 Galvatron Wow as far as as far

as like comparing the headspace Right, and I

think that's really really cool I was so hoping

even though I know the animated line is dead

other than the ones that we're still going to

be getting as far as deluxes. I wish they would

have done more leader toys. I think the leader

toys outside of bulkhead I'm not really that

big a fan on him at all or his any of his figures

from animated. Between Megatron and Magnus I

think they could have done a whole lot more.

I so wanted a leader jazz after I got the deluxe

version. Well, to be fair, Hasbro generally tries

to do leader figures based off of what makes

sense in the context of whatever the property

is. Like they went with the leader figures of

Magnus, Megatron, and Bulkhead because all three

were very large robots. And Bulkhead they saw

as a potential popular character. Magnus is the

leader of the Autobots and Megatron's leader,

the Decepticons. But I'm not honestly all that

surprised because generally... Well, for the

last few shows, what we've been getting is three

leader class figures. With Cybertron, we got

Metraplex, Optimus Prime, and Megatron. With

Animated, we got the bulkhead Megatron and Magnus.

With the first movie, we got Brawl Prime and

Megatron, plus some repaints. And with this one,

the initial three leader figures are Jetfire

Prime and Megatron, and we're getting some more

leaders down the road, but those probably won't

be till late 2010, which shows that Hasbro has

nothing to run. that really they've got nothing

to run until the new cartoons. So they're trying

to stretch out the movie line as much as they

can. Oh, I mean, I, you know, I completely understand

that. But just looking at the deluxe version

of Jazz, I think it would have been super awesome

to see him in a, in a liter size that, you know,

that's just my opinion. I understand. I'm not

going to be getting it. Yes. As someone who's

big on scale, I think the deluxe figure worked

just fine. It captures transformation pretty

well. It's very show accurate. If you're making

it bigger, you're making a very simple leader

toy and you're making something that suffers

from supreme cheater syndrome. That is you get

the toy, realize, holy crap, this is sort of

scale. I couldn't possibly use it with any of

my figures and it just goes in the storage. Which

was me a day or two after I got him like 10 years

ago. And see, I didn't know Magnus had come out

before the season. See, I thought Magnus was

on one of the tail end waves recently after season

three or in the full of season three. I didn't

know. He even got a repaint already, actually.

I don't think it saw the very good distribution,

but they repainted them in a Roadbuster colors

as a homage to the G1 character Roadbuster. Yeah.

Don't know I wasn't really too keen on the Roadbuster

version Well, I rarely even saw Magnus out here

the reason I got him was because I was off in

Windsor for Christmas and they had him at the

Walmart's out there But I never saw him out here

and get in this part of the country Yes Overall,

I think it's an awesome toy As I said last episode

with the paint apps on animated I like the fact

that For the majority of Transformers figures

now, they're not pulling the G1 thing where you

have to apply stickers to see the Autobot symbols

or stuff like that. I like the fact that they're

basically just putting them into the paint apps.

Yeah, but by the same token if you're purest

like me who doesn't like the silver and go gold

symbols on He has animated figures because it's

not so accurate You do have to apply stickers

because you buy a set from repra labels and then

repra label up all your figures Well true, but

I'm talking about like Well, who has besides

besides a leaguard bumblebee who has silver and

gold logo just about everybody Almost all the

Decepticons have gold and almost all the Autobots

have silver. The exceptions to this rule are

the Elite Guard figures. I'm just trying to think

who else. There's a very small number of exceptions.

Well, none of the Prime Molds have a silver Autobot

sticker, do they? They have red, don't they?

Yeah, they do. The Legends figures that they

released under the universe banner have the classic

symbols, but all the other Primes have silver

symbols. No, I mean for animated. Yeah, that's

what I mean. Like the Voyager Prime originally

actually didn't even have one, they forgot to

put it on the paint apps. And it was a silver

one. Well hopefully with Wingblade coming out

they will do the real... I think it really comes

down to what line they're released into to some

extent. I can see them still going with silver

because that's what they've been doing for all

the animated figures. Like I mean hot rods is

different I think because simply because of the

fact that it's part of it blends in with the

flame Deco the way it's designed so you form

a bit of an elite guard symbol if they did a

if they did a silver or gold for the The Rodimus

toy that would completely ruin the character

as far as a toy if they did gold then it would

be a Decepticon so they wouldn't be doing gold

well Yeah, but I mean you know what I mean though.

Yes, it's not having the red symbol there would

just yeah yeah hasbro started doing this with

the movie line with the idea that those way that

that way the symbols are subdued they still they're

still visible but they're subdued enough for

vehicle modes and such that they don't stick

out blatantly yeah so i think that was a good

idea for the movie line because you don't see

symbols very much on guys but for heck i don't

think there's there's no deceptive on the symbol

on megatron on the first movies megatron for

that matter on that leader But for animated,

that's something that I personally am not a fan

of. I know I'm supposed to be talking about leader

Magnus, but as far as leader figures, as far

as the leader Megatron for TFA, his is red, isn't

it? Yeah, he has a red light up button. Why is

his logo red? because it's clear plastic and

it's clear plastics for the light to go through

they probably and they Eyes and stuff where light

piped in the eyes and chest have red light piping

on them I'm not surprised that they didn't go

with purple to be honest. I just stuck a big

rapper label over top of mine So he has a purple

one, but does the light does the light up stuff

still? Oh it still works, it just doesn't shine

through the sticker, it shines around the sticker.

As far as Magnus though, there's one feature

that really makes Magnus for me. Magnus in my

mind for the animated leaders, he's definitely

the best. Megatron looks great, but he's got

a very simple transformation. Bulkhead has a

surprisingly complex transformation. I was surprised

when I first got my hands on with that guy and

it was actually the transformation that sold

me on him because holy crap, it's very involved

for something that looks really simple. It's

deceptively complex. and he feels really good,

plus he's got good audio clips. But Magnus, Magnus

has a really nice alternate mode, a really nice

vehicle mode, I mean a really nice robot mode,

he's show accurate, he has the clips, he's got

a mouth that opens properly unlike bulkheads,

and he's got that final feature, which I don't

think you've mentioned, which is his artillery

mode. Yeah, only because, as I've said before,

I... Really can't be fully accurate in a audio

review of him because as as it stands right now

he is Half transformed and it's probably half

transformed incorrectly. So yes, but you know

can still do their until artillery mode in robot

mode though. Oh Yeah, that's right fold out the

all the guns on there and yeah, I didn't like

it that much It looks amazing in a vehicle mode

when you fold up all those guns yeah i will agree

with that but as far as the robot mode i just

like him just playing the way he is with his

hammer in his hand i mean yeah you fold it out

you've got a big uh you've got when you i saw

the pictures of that you know you're expecting

a big imposing character and then starscream

just blows them up just shrugs them off with

a simple point blank cannon blast well certainly

magnus is magnus really has about the same he

comes across as just as weak if not weaker than

G1 Magnus in that let's see first he gets owned

by Starscream he's recovered eventually and then

Shockwave utterly brutalizes him to the point

where by the end of animated he's still in a

coma and he's recovering but honestly I can't

see Magnus recovering given that he looked pretty

catatonic he's like a Terry Shivo transformer

if he if he does recover or in any future fiction

or if animated even ever comes back in in cartoon

form which i don't think it will um if he does

recover he will probably be brain dead um mind

you to be fair i just remembered this there is

actual actual canonical evidence that he does

recover because of the fact that in the AllSpark

Almanac, which came out last week, put it by

Jim Source and Bill Forster with the cooperation

of the animated production team, one of the summary

for the Rise of Safeguard comic is a page out

of Ultra Magnus' memoirs. Well, I mean, that's

more than fine that he does, but I mean, just

as far as cartoon -wise, as far as... the future

of the cartoon, which there is no future obviously.

Unless the Almanac and stuff do well enough for

them to decide to do a season four comic, which

Marty Eisenberg is apparently interested in doing.

Right, but I'm saying as far as it being on television

as an actual cartoon, I would assume just the

way that they left the story in the cartoon alone,

it would come back as being brain dead. Yeah,

that's true. That's just my I mean, I'm not saying

that that's what's gonna happen in fiction You

know anybody can write fiction comic books, whatever

that's more than fine But I'm saying the way

that I would think that they would have to bring

him back with the way they left him At the end

of the show would be he'd be brain dead Although

they could just use the all spark to fix them

up Yeah, that's true Although mind you my interpretation

with Magnus though is that he would come back

I don't think he would be I don't think after

that brutal assault by shockwave he would ever

be fit for active duty again physically maybe

psychologically I have my doubts I could honestly

see him Plus that he'd kind of been, to some

extent, left in the wayside. I mean, Sentinel

had taken on the new Magnus position. I could

honestly see a situation where Magnus would have

just gracefully retired rather than create some

sort of power struggle. Because I don't think

Sentinel would want to give up his new Magnus

position. Yes, well. I think they should have

had Optimus and Sentinel do a battle to the death

with Optimus winning and Sentinel being dead.

Optimus cutting his chin off with his giant friggin'

axe, and then Optimus would be the leader. But

that's - No, he wouldn't cut it off. He would

stick his axe in and unscrew it. Ew. Back to

the screwdriver. That's just wrong. Okay, um,

that's really all I have to say about Magnus.

I will maybe eventually - once i get him transformed

properly maybe down the line in a toy cast mention

his his vehicle mode a little bit um just from

the pictures i've seen it's an awesome awesome

missile truck and i really enjoy it so i can't

wait until i can get this guy actually into uh

correct transformation for vehicle mode um so

i think we're going to go over the contest one

more time before we close out this episode this
