BotCon 2007-2009 Figures: Dreadwind, Scourge, and Shattered Glass Rodimus

OptimusGurge as usual. Hello, sir. Hey, guys.

How you doing? And returning from oblivion is

Pia. Hello, sir. How are you? Hey, how you doing?

Yes, this is the first episode you've been on

since episode one. Yeah, it is. I just never

had the time. Long time. This episode will kick

off a three -part BotCon special, because I only

have three BotCon toys now. I have Rodimus, Shattered

Glass Optimus, and Shattered Glass Gold Bug.

So I will be talking about those as these episodes

progress, but today I'm going to be talking about

Shattered Glass Rodimus. Who are you guys going

to be talking about, Ben? Go ahead. Just say

I will be doing BotCon 2009 Sturge and I will

touch on the sweeps very briefly as they're pretty

much the same And I'm gonna be I'm gonna be doing

BotCon 2007 Dreadwind. Yes Why don't you take

Dreadwind first since that is a figure that I

I've seen but I don't actually know anything

about him. Oh Okay. Well, it's basically just

a it's kind of a white and gray and a kind of

a teal and purple repaint of the classics Jetfire

mold and with a new head and it really kind of

works. I really, really like him. I think I like

him better as Dreadwind than I do as Jetfire

to be perfectly honest. But very classy, very

nice repaint. He looks really next to Darkwing

from Toys R Us. But just overall, he's just a

fantastic figure. I don't know why I love him

so much. I just do. He's awesome. Now, is this

one of your favorites out of the 07 set? Oh,

I think that is my favorite out of the 07 set.

It may be my favorite BotCon toy, period. Seekers

be damned. That's the blasphemy there. Now, all

my seekers are Henkei anyway now, so. All right,

so would you recommend people getting this figure

if they... Can you get their hands on one? Oh,

yeah. Oh, definitely. I mean, like, I think I

paid, I actually bought mine from Benson Yee

for like 60 bucks. And I know it's gone. I had

it. I had one originally and then sold it and

then got it back. But I know he's I know his

price is going up, but he's still worth like

the 120 people are paying for him. Yeah, it's

amazing. I was going to touch on what it's worth.

You know, it's just it's amazing because there

are. There's not an official combination, but

I'm sure you guys have seen, maybe have seen

the fan mode configurations with the Toys R Us

exclusive. Oh, yeah. Darkwing. Yeah. The repaint

of Silverbolt. Now, wasn't there something to

where Darkwing was supposed to be Dreadwinder,

vice versa, in the fiction of Valkano 7 or something?

Wasn't, I don't know, maybe I'm confusing something

with something else, but wasn't Wasn't Darkwing

supposed to be in the set or they couldn't use

it or what's the deal with that? I have no idea.

I haven't even heard that. I don't know. I always

thought that they were similar. It was based

off of that or whatever. I don't know. Maybe

I'm confusing something else. Well, until they

came out with a Darkwing, I just assumed that

like... Dreadwind was like the jetfire figure

itself and like like the jetpack and the armor

and the missile launchers was maybe made from

from like the remnants of Dreadwing after or

that was Darkwing after like some giant battles

like he still had like Darkwing armor And they

still combined that that's how I thought about

it until they actually made a Darkwing figure

All right, I guess do you have anything more

to say about him do we want to talk anything

more about him? I love him. I love him lots.

Other than that, there's not anymore to say he's

awesome, get him if you can. I realize that only

like 1 ,400 people can have him, but be one of

those 1 ,400. Yeah. I guess you can go next,

Optimus Scourge. Okay, I was going to touch on

the BotCon 2009 set, which to me was one of the

weaker sets, but it kind of grew on me a little

bit. I ended up getting just a couple of figures,

not the whole set. Scourge, obviously it's in

my username, Optimus Scourge. It was meant to

be the Black Prime that came out with the RID

series really, but I like the character Scourge

as well. So as the mold goes, the original mold

was Cybertron Sideways. You alright there, Ben?

Yeah, sorry, my cord got tangled up. That's alright.

So the original mold was Cybertron Sideways,

which to be honest with you, I looked at it and

I was not completionist on that line. I kind

of got the ones I liked and didn't get the ones

I didn't like. I was more into the Alternators

masterpiece, that kind of stuff at the time.

My kids were playing with Cybertron. That's not

to say I didn't get any for myself, I did, but

I kind of passed on this mold. And then I got

this mold, the Target exclusive, he was Ratbat.

And I just didn't like the way he looked. know

and then when I saw scourge I'm like well I kind

of dig in that and then I saw the gallery of

scourge and I said wow maybe I'll have to get

that and I go look on eBay and he's 100 150 120

going geez maybe I'm not gonna get scourge so

a very nice member on the TFW boards Offered

me his for basically cost $50 or 55 ships something

like that and I get that's very hard to say no

to Especially when it's a character that you

know, that's part of you what you like and all

that So I gave it a chance and you know, the

head mold is amazing You know, even if you don't

like the mold It's really grown on me the mold.

I like it now I'm not a big fan of the planet

keys and I don't like the fact that you can't

take off his big arm cannon, you know the flip

out stuff that the key does but Other than that,

you know, he can hold his wings. I think it's

an appropriate choice for the character because

Scourge as the little space boat and now he's

like a little space plane. I think it's a perfect

choice for the mold. And like I said, the head

sculpt is just amazing. He holds his kibble well

aside from that huge, you know, arm thing with

the cyber key with the flip out. translucent

red Energon bars or whatever you want to call

them. I don't have his bio handy but For me,

you know, I get after transforming him and getting

him into you know, the flips and turns of transformation

The mold kind of grew on me a little bit. I'm

not going to say it's my favorite, but I'll say

I went from I'll get it because it's scourge

and it's cheap to damn This is pretty cool. So

I could definitely say if you could find him

for a decent price, you know I mean if you're

a huge scourge fan or you like the rat bat mold

or you like sideways mold Definitely a good pickup

For myself just the head mold alone and the detail

obviously all the box contours are like that

with the detail you know they all mess around

when it comes to paint apps and You know to sum

it up in a nutshell I'd give them probably an

eight and a half out of ten with the the lost

points for the non -removable Cannon fodder that

he has on his arm If you could take that off

and maybe peg it on his back and he could have

a regular hand and like hold the shield I think

he'd be easy nine point five out of ten for me

and that's that's about all I got to say about

him Yeah, I don't know it's you know Admit I

had seen just going over you know block on it

in general. I had seen a lot of the 06 and 07

toys and I was like Those are cool. It was like

right when I was getting back into the whole

collecting thing and You know and actually wanting

to get stuff back and stuff like that But as

soon as I saw the 08 said I was done. I was like

I gotta have that I thought the 07 set was good.

Like I said, I loved Red Wind and I was a little

miffed at Thundercracker but I ended up getting

him anyway so it was okay. I guess that's really

how pissed you can be about it. People are only

pissed until they actually have a chance to get

the Thundercracker of the set and they're like,

I think it's great that they did this. But yeah,

the 07 set was good. I like the 06 set because

I'm a huge Beast Wars fan. But the 08 set like

I didn't like it first I was like, okay We'll

see how it works and it really grew on me like

Rodimus and optimus and some of them are really

awesome. Oh, yeah I regret selling mine, but

I regret Rodimus the most Yeah Rodimus has to

be easily the best figure out of that set out

of the entire set. Oh, yeah, just because All

the prime is right behind him though. Like I

mean Rodimus and prime I think I've already seen

my two favorites out of that said Oh, yeah, I'm

not saying that they're not but I'm just saying

that you know He's good the goatee. Yeah, that's

the whole point The goatee puts him over the

top. I think he's a tie with optimists like I

was saying but I mean the goatee is just That's

badass. That's one of the reasons why I haven't

started. Also, I should mention, not to knock

you off, but Scourge has a goatee as well. Doesn't

he really? Yes, he does. Doesn't he really? Huh.

Even the original Scourge had a goatee. One of

those cool things in the animation, like facial

hair on a transformer. But that's character.

Facial hair on a robot that... It's kind of like...

Anyways, moving along. It's kind of like a hammer

space. How are you going to work hammer space

into a show? But yeah, anyways. 08 Rodimus, I

wasn't... I don't know. I hadn't ever seen the

classics before, the classics line, because like

I said, I was just getting back into it. And

then I had seen the... I had finally seen the

regular classics Rodimus. You know, I I found

out some stuff about Botcon away because it was

it was actually like an hour and an hour and

a half away from where I live I was like, oh

cool. I'll try to go and of course if it wasn't

for the $1 ,200 price tag for everything, you

know, like the like the hotel room The driving

time and all that other crap. I probably would

have gone Yeah, but I didn't but I ended up finding

erotimus on eBay and oh my This thing has got

to be the best car The best car colors, the whole

evil robot thing is so awesome. It's just beyond,

it's just beyond everything and everything. I

just finished transforming him into robot mode

because obviously we have to talk about the goatee

and how evil it makes him look. And I'm actually

just seeing now the light piping on the eyes

for the red eyes. Oh my god Yeah, it really is

a gorgeous figure. Yeah, it is. I mean the black

and purple really Really pull it off for this

For the for the mold that it is my only issue

with this figure that I have is the leg Sometimes

they will not go all the way down and it kind

of looks like a now but You know another nice

touch was they kept the razor blade like they

did with the classics in the in the NK versions

of them too, which is really cool Yeah on the

left hand side You know, I just I love this figure

This figure has got to be probably my favorite

out of all the ones that I have left And I'm

probably gonna say that about the optimus figure,

too No, even though it took me like, I don't

know 45 minutes to transform him back truck mode

I finally did get it and he's staying there until

I can find another shattered glass optimus at

a decent price To actually buy to go back in

robot mode. I am NOT taking that thing out of

truck mode again It took me about 45 minutes

to get that thing back in the truck mode. But

anyway Yeah, shattered glass Rodimus every time

I've seen him on eBay now. He's either in auction

Of course, we all know how eBay options go or

he's a buy it now for a hundred and eighty nine

not ninety five. Yeah, and If you can get him

get him if you can't, you know, I'm sorry you're

you're missing out You know and just the just

the fiction on him I've got the comic book around

here somewhere cuz I talk here. I'm actually

looking at the resources on TFW You want his

bio? No, I've got his bio card right next to

me But what I was gonna say was compare the toy

to the to page three of the comic book Compare

the toy to what he looks like in the comic book.

It's awesome. It's just Well, you got Don doing

the art. That doesn't hurt. Well, no, it doesn't.

But just comparing how good the toy is compared

to the art, I don't know what it is. What they

did, I talked to Alex Milne about that. We were

at a bar or something at Botcom 07. And I said,

I just love your art the way it is. is very toy

accurate. We talk about show accuracy, but from

another perspective, you have the comic book

accuracy. He knows the toy's already made or

whatever. He's seen pictures of prototypes, so

he gets almost as good as he can with that. I

don't know if he did that particular one, but

I know Alex. Don Figueroa did that one. Well,

then him as well. They get very toy accurate.

I, for one, love that. Yeah, oh, yeah, and I

love how Don generally does not cheat with his

figures I mean like when he designs transformers

He designs them in a way that like they actually

work You know like he knows where everything

goes and folds and I think that's what makes

him one of the stronger artists Oh, yeah, I'm

sure I think EJ Sue does it a little bit, too

He designed he's designed titanium Optimus Prime

And he's got his name in them in the middle of

the gun where the little lines are you can see

Don? I know that a lot of people on the on the

classics and henkay version the only issue that

a lot of people that I've seen have is the fact

he has no elbows this mold has no elbow the arm

folds where the elbow should but you really can't

hold the gun that way in his hand you can only

move it up so far and then obviously the The

barrel or the butt of the gun will will come

up against his wheel Yeah, I've got it now almost

as straight as it's gonna go because I just put

it I don't have any idea Somebody no, he's supposed

to okay. Yeah, I'll wait till after next time.

No, no, no, it's fine I just didn't know I heard

a noise. I didn't know what it was seeing Yeah,

that's why I usually keep myself invisible when

recording. But anyway, um just for strangers

but anyway um overall Rodimus is a 10 I don't

care what anybody says about the mold itself

this you know the botcon version it it's a 10

hell I'd even put it at an 11 if it was possible

I mean this figure is just so super cool and

I just can't gush enough about it and I like

the fact that they painted on the goatee and

it's not just something to where they just said

well we'll we'll just put it there and And we'll

make it look like a crazy paint app. I've seen

all these pictures. They're from the BotCon stuff,

aren't they? Oh, no. You're always telling me

I don't have pictures, so I'm giving you pictures.

Oh, well, no. I'm saying that you don't post

the pictures of the toys that you talk about

in the threads on the forum. Yeah, because I'm

on like four different forums and Twitter and

taking care of a house trying to find a job Yeah,

good luck on that man. I hope you find one soon.

I got a good chance of getting into Toys R Us

I got a good chance of getting in a Toys R Us

I got a call today. Good good the second interview,

and I don't know who's making that noise, but

it ain't me It's not me this time. It's not me.

I don't know Anyways, um, you know overall Rodimus

is just and the other thing I noticed I mean,

you know again I'm you know coming in late to

the game How when did they start using the heel

spurs? They popped up at random times throughout

the year I mean like I think I think classics

really started doing it. I love that that that

is just great I mean that's just a great way

to actually stabilize a toy as far as being able

to stand up correctly on almost any surface other

than like you know almost any hard surface like

you know desk you know a surface that may have

hole you know vented holes something like that

and it is just super super awesome actually you

know what a lot of beast wars toys had the heel

spurs too so they've been doing it for a while

i never really get into the beast wars toys but

anyway um yeah overall the you know i I've seen

the pictures of all three of them that we've

talked about today and I think they're all really

cool. Again, the 09 set isn't probably something

I will actually own any toys from. I just didn't

like the theme that they used. A lot of people

said that, but in its defense, once you get a

few of them in your hands, granted they do have

their compromises, but that's all they had to

work with. They couldn't use animated and they

can't use movie toys. I will say that, like,

I wasn't real big on the concept of the box set

as a whole, but they knocked it out of the park

with some of those add -ons. I mean, yeah, exactly.

I got Bonsitron, like you talked about in episode

one. He is. Bonsitron, Skyquake, LeoZach, all

nice figures. Oh, yeah. I don't like the mold

that much, but my god, does it look menacing.

He's like a ninja with a knife. I can't wait

for Bonshin either. Oh, yeah. That's a mentioned

punch -counterpunch, the club exclusive that

they're creating. I'm all excited for that one.

Oh, yeah. That looks so cool. I can actually

join the club just for that. It doesn't hurt

that that side -swipe stone -streaker mode is

already like aces regardless, you know? You know,

I considered doing it when it first came out.

I'm like, when side -swipe comes out, I'm going

to buy that so I have that head. And then I can

just make another face on the other side. And

I was going to do that. Because I had a spare

G1 punch -counterpunch that was in nasty condition,

but I had his guns and they fit his hands. Oh

nice. The G1 punch -counterpunch guns will fit

the one coming out, which is really cool. I heard

the coin noise from Mario a second ago. I don't

know. I don't know. That was strange. Maybe ghosts

have taken over Toycast now. I'm not touching

anything. I closed that window where it was transferring

the files. I closed it. No, that's fine Anyway,

um, yeah, I What was the original punch -counterpunch

toy I mean was it he was a blue kind of a just

a regular car You know, he was he was sporty

but not too sporty to compare him to something

that uh, jeez I'd have to say he'd look like

a Datsun Like like silver streak only very squared

off that kind of style like a long hood You know

a short, you know cab section and a short tail

You basically stand him up. He's got two sets

of hands And one set of legs and he's got two

faces that don't move and he's got a helmet and

one side He's an Ottawa rub symbol other side

you lift his helmet up. He's got a face the helmet

covers the other uh... face in the other mode

you know i mean it kind of flips over and uh...

he's very simple but he's a cool character and

uh... you know i always like that double agent

kind of thing like that mercenary type deal you

know let's take whoever gives the most money

type thing well that was the whole thing with

bot conronimus is he is a mercenary uh... yep

his little i've got the uh... text right here

to the victory go the profits I know, Gary, you

have an appointment to grab to... I actually

got about 10 minutes or so to... We can still

chat. Okay. Yeah, I don't have much time left

either, so... Okay, that's fine. I'm trying to

install a surround sound system in my house today,

so... I noticed my Walmart has a DVD... What

is it called? Blu -ray DVD players down to $98

for a Magnavox. And I have a $100 card burning

a hole in my pocket But it's like I might need

this for food. So I'm waiting on Toys R Us which

I have to call after this appointment. But yeah

Anyway back to the toys. Um Anyone else have

anything to say about them? I just think that

they're super super awesome I mean, I've seen

the dread win and the And the skirt on the BotCon

website. They're okay, but they're not actual

For me, it's not figures that I would want because

not figures that I it's not only characters that

I would like probably but they you know I will

agree that they are super cool and just for for

anybody else that would want those Get them.

I would say you would have to be a fan of scourge

to really want this. Yeah And because Scourge

had such a prominence in season three and with

the sweeps and all. And I will touch on the sweeps.

Basically the sweeps you have I think was one,

two, and seven. And there are slight differences.

You can look up galleries on TFW or Cybertron

or wherever you like. But the subtle differences

are just pain apps basically. They all have the

same molding, the same weapons, whatever. But

they're a slightly different color as scourge

is a very nice solid, not a solid blue, but like

a light solid blue, not a baby blue. They're

more of a baby blue to a teal to kind of be separated

from him. So not going to really touch on them

other than that because of the same exact toy

same everything I described for him But you know

those sold out within minutes, and I think that

sets going for like two to three hundred dollars

now So yeah That's that's just amazing well They

didn't make very many of them, and then nobody

knew that they were even going to be there They

actually managed to keep it under wraps until

block on which I don't know maybe Pia can tell

us some more about that. Has security tightened

up in China? Not that I'm aware of. I was actually

listening to Kira came running. What do they

keep under wraps? The sweeps. I knew about it

a few weeks beforehand. The thing is, people

were talking about it on the boards, but nobody

believed it was actually going to happen. They're

like, no, we're not going to get three add -ons

sets. I think we're going to get the Razor Claw

and the Leto One because we'd seen pictures of

them. We didn't see any pictures of them before

BotCon, but people were talking about the fact

that there was going to be a three -pack of sweeps

for a while, but nobody really believed it. I

was lucky enough to get the sweeps at cost and

I will say when I saw their value I said I'm

not opening those because I already have scourge,

I already know what they look like, I don't have

enough display room to put the sweeps behind

them in my classics so would I love to keep them?

Sure but that's you know if I need some money

and you know. You never know not that I'm trying

to make money off a toy But when you don't have

a job when you don't have a job and you're trying

to feed your kids And you know set a house that

you might be getting you know kids living in

all the times You know you got to make sure you

take care of business, but yeah, I definitely

recommend scourge But again if you don't like

the mold if you don't like Cybertron sideways

If you don't like his mold if you don't like

rat bat the target exclusive Unless you're a

huge scourge fan, then you're not gonna like

this toy that's kind of what drew me into it

but uh... the other thing i want to point out

as far as Rodimus goes as far as comparison you

know we've always had the fact that his engine

has always been a really really sore spot obviously

in G1 for Hot Rod it was the back of his head

this it's just on his chest you know this mold

with you know the classics mold you know being

being the BotCon mold actually don't mind the

chest but with uh... TFA Rodimus Minor coming

out and they figured out how to just you know

put it underneath the Autobot symbol and completely

hide it all together That's awesome that that

that toy needs to come out now Well see this

movie has already outdone itself within the first

three and a half weeks So the repercussions of

that will be more mean I picked up the ice cream

twins and jolt yesterday I didn't think I'd be

seeing them till freaking September Yeah, and

both good fix and and the pegs were halfway clean

I mean, you know, I was with lupus convoy from

TFW I went up in New Hampshire and visit them

up there to get my Chevy Aveo swerve Thanks to

G8 GM fan 101 of Cybertron CA or TF con Yeah,

so if you have any Canadian friends make nice

with them because they're handing out free swerves

for a test drive of a Chevy Aveo up there so

Yeah, you know You know these figures are just

so awesome and like I think it was you that said

have been you know Botcon puts so much thought

into each each of their figures Even though they

are remolded from other lines. There's just so

much thought put into this thing You know who

would have thought that that they would have

carried over the razor blade. Oh Yeah, you know

razor claw. Well, no for Rodimus the Oh, yeah,

well, I mean like it was part of the mold I don't

think they really change anything aside from

head molds except for thrust I think thrust the

only one I didn't get more than we got more than

a new head mold Yeah, the only thing they change

is the apps It's all like looks like it's hand

-painted by professionals and not six -year -old

kids in China like the rest of the toys I'll

tell you just to touch on some something like

that topic really quickly. I got some GI Joe's

like the Baroness Okay, she looks good with her

glasses on But my god, you take off her glasses,

she's cross -eyed. One eye is looking one way,

down and left. The other eye is looking up and

right. OK, so that's that. All right, do we have

any final thoughts on? Well, we could have a

quick what did we get this week? I didn't get

anything this week, so I haven't gotten squat

this week yet. It's driving me nuts I've got

I've got my my superior on add -on kits finally

on the way I've got my legends Devastator should

be here any day now. I've got I've got a human

alliance side swipe should be here any day now

And I'm just going nuts wait for him to get here.

I will be getting stuff this week I haven't gotten

nothing this week so far Hopefully you can come

join us again soon. I got my first Alternaty

Convoy, which I was not going to collect this,

but I can't say who, but someone very generous

from TFW, thank you, you know who you are, donated

this toy to me. It is a Blackdemus Prime or Alternaty

Convoy Nissan GTR Super Black Edition. It's nice

he does look like scourge, but it's he's called

convoy super Yeah, I know yeah, just cuz they're

each like a you know some kind of time continuum

He's actually supposed to be if you read the

the bio for him He's actually supposed to be

scourge I mean like he went evil and then through

some power like he's supposed to be like a nemesis

Convoy or whatever they're calling him or nemesis

prime like when evil got redeemed and is now

part of the team Right, but he actually is supposed

to be like scourge or nemesis prime or whatever

yep but yeah the alternative figures are awesome

don't get me started i went out and bought the

red convoy and i bought silver megatron but my

wife doesn't know that so okay well we won't

tell her hopefully she'll listen to the show

i just right now i've just got the red convoy

and the silver megatron but man there i love

them to death oh yeah I can't wait for the Bumblebee.

And I love the story on the Alternate. I know

we're going off on a tangent, but it's just so

amazing. Yeah. The translation, like Megatron's

swords can cut through time and space and have

infinite range and all this. Yeah. But Prime

can deflect that and move to a different dimension.

It's just amazing. I just love that Megatron

has an inertia manipulation device in his crotch.

Yes, yes Let's not even get in get in on crotch

again Look at look at Galvatron from g1 with

the book. Yeah, once you put him robot And not

only that but you got your Megatron. Yeah. Yeah

Trigger trigger on that before You touched what

before we've no we've touched on that subject

before oh good lord so i'm gonna play a small

clip and then i'm going to go into the closing

alrighty come out autobot we all must die sometime
