About this Episode

Mike and Michael from TFG1 Podcast discuss two G1 Transformers toys: G1 Octane (a triple-changer Decepticon) and G1 Hot Rod (an Autobot that became Rodimus Prime). They explore the toys' articulation, design details, sticker work, and compare them to modern versions like Classics Tankor and upcoming Transformers Animated figures. The conversation touches on toy collecting, keeping vehicles vs. transforming them, and how G1 toys compare to contemporary releases.

Yeah. Hello and welcome to the seventh episode

of Transformers Toycast brought to you by the

Geekcast Radio Network This is an impromptu recording

of episode 7 and I am joined by my Pretty much

often co -host from TFG one podcast Michael Wilson.

Hello. Hi there. How's it going? It's going pretty

good. How are you? Couldn't be better Yes, and

I would just like to let everyone know this is

a very impromptu recording. I was supposed to

have another recording tonight with Toycast,

but the guys that were going to do that, plans

came up, they were somewhere else, and I'll probably

be recording with them tomorrow night, so there

may be two or three episodes of Toycast this

week. Let's see what's been going on. It's only

been two days since you and I talked since we

recorded with Steve on TFG 122 and 23. Has anything

big been going on with you in the last two days?

Not in the last two days. I'm trying to clean

my room. So the huge piles of unopened transformers

that I have are slowly being migrated into one

single closet pile. No, I don't have any room

in the closet. Well, take some of the stuff out

of the closet, especially Rivaltech Megatron.

I'm not gonna keep bugging you about that unless

I get one of my own. Eventually he'll come out

and he'll make an appearance, but I got a lot

of stuff that, I mean... I don't know what I'm

going to do if I'm just going to open it and

put it on the shelves because I don't have enough

room on my shelves for all this stuff. I just

don't. I mean, I keep buying stuff, but I don't

know where to put it. What stuff do you have

that you haven't opened so far? Pretty much all

the Voyager class Transformers animated. I've

got all of the universe Voyager and. Think the

ultra -sized stuff. Mm -hmm, you know like a

storm cloud and countdown and Yeah, I got all

of those. I've got a whole bunch of Transformers

movie Toys R Us exclusive stuff and Target exclusive

stuff because I didn't buy most of the movie

stuff, but just the exclusives So I got a lot

of those Transformers animated leader class wait,

wait, which leader class? I've got Megatron and

I've got a bulkhead. How many Megatrons do you

have? In all? No, no, no. How many animated leader

class Megatrons do you have? Just the one. Shit.

I know, I didn't get the black and blue one.

I didn't get Galvatron. It's not Galvatron, it's

Shadowblade Megatron, dammit. So I didn't get

Transformers animated Galvatron. It's shadow

played Megatron. God damn it I've got a whole

bunch of the Legends class stuff and a huge pile

and a bunch of the titanium stuff I just recently

found that the target exclusive titanium's The

optimus prime repaint the thrust repaint and

the hot hot spot hot shot The reason why I was

asking you how many liter -class Megatrons you

had because I was gonna buy one from you Because

I can't find them anywhere anymore like as far

as just going to the store and getting them.

Oh, there was a website Oh, yeah, I know I can

know I can find them online, but I know they

had them like for 19 bucks Mean it's a $50 toys

or $40 toy 45 depending on where you look, you

know, I got my I have leader class The only class

I have is Magnus and the only other one I want

is Megatron I will not buy that piece of shit

bulkhead. Oh No, see I haven't open up so I can't

really comment. I have both the Magnus I didn't

open the regular Magnus, but I did open the Buster

the repaint Roadbuster Magnus. Yeah I liked him.

I'm a big Roadbuster fan, so I bought that. So

anyway, to digress, I've got this big -ass pile

of Transformers, and literally, I've got some

stacks that are about six feet tall, and then

the stuff that I've been moving right now is

just in a huge pile. I just have hazardous waste.

I know it's a sickness. I gotta do something.

I got a milk crate full of odds and ends that

I think I'm just gonna throw away. I was gonna

put them on eBay and I'm thinking nobody wants

to buy, you know bottom of the barrel Cast off

broken crap Yes, and seeing as how you have never

listened to any of our episodes here on toy cast

shame on you You bastard go listen Basically

what this is is it's an idea that I kind of came

up with during another recording on another Transformers

podcast, they were trying to figure out what

to do after they finished reviewing season three

of Animated. And they're like, why don't we do

a news podcast, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

And I'm sure everybody has heard this from a

previous recording of Toycast, but I'm just filling

you in. I said, no, there's so many Transformers

news podcasts out there. Why don't we do something

different? Why don't we have it like a get -together

where we all just pick one toy each episode,

doesn't matter what line it's from, as long as

it's a Transformer. GoBots. A Transformer toy

line. GoBots doesn't fucking count. Hasbro bought

the rights. It counts. And basically, it's just

like if a bunch of your Transformers friends

came over your house and you all just kind of

talked about all your toys, basically. It's kind

of more of a discussion based. It's not really

fact based. It's more of like, it's kind of like

audio reviews. It's kind of like basically YouTube

without the video. It's like Toy Club. Yeah,

kind of. First rule of toy club. You don't talk

about toy club. Open your toys, damn it. Well,

in your case. Well, you know, I got a buttload

I need to open, but there's probably a lot of

these I won't open. Anyway, so. Since you're

the guest, which one are you going to talk about?

I have a large selection of toys staring at me

on my desk now. Because I had been doing Flickr

photos, and I'd do one a night. I had a Project

365 going on, where I would take a picture of

a transformer every night. So I had a bunch on

my desk. And I haven't updated that in about

a month. And these have just been kind of sitting

at me, staring at me, waiting for them to take

a picture. But of the mess here, I've got G1

octane. Is you know kind of forefront I kind

of dig him and oddly enough I had him standing

right next to Classics tank or who was the the

the newer bigger better version of octane Yes,

when you first told me about classics tank horn

you show me a picture. I'm like wait wasn't tank

or supposed to be a tank I guess Hasbro lost

the rights to the name octane, so they couldn't

call him that anymore But he looks a lot like

you know G1 octane. I mean the head and the colors.

Yeah But yeah, so I brought along G1 octane to

play with today. Oh What? Which mode do you like

better on him? You know there that's that's a

hard question because he's a triple changer.

He's got three But you know, I've seen a lot

of these guys where They'll be missing a shield.

If you go to BotCon and you say, oh, can I have

an octane? They'll be like, oh, all I got is

this one, and he doesn't have a shield. Well,

the shield is literally like a big chunk of plastic

chrome. And number one, apparently, they're hard

to find because they got lost a lot back in the

80s. And number two, if you do find them, they're

all scratched all to hell because it's chrome.

It's very hard to find an octane who's got all

of his stickers intact And it's got all of this

chrome in good shape but the You know the the

mode that shows off the most of the stickers

in chrome it would have to be robot mode Yeah,

because he's gonna have his his you know his

wings Splayed out, you know, and they're all

chrome and he's got the the the shield which

is all chrome So I mean, yeah, he's uh, he looks

very cool in robot mode Yes, when I when you

showed me the picture of him in robot, I guess

that was his robot mode. He doesn't look so accurate

at all I don't know. Maybe it was the way you

had imposed or the way you had You know the way

you took the it wasn't a straight like straight

frontal shot of the of the of the toy I don't

know, maybe that was it, but it just doesn't

look like it's so accurate at all. Well, I think

the deal with Octane is that he's just so chesty.

I mean, if he was a Fembot, he'd be like... He

has big tits. He's a big old Mondo triple changer.

And when you look at his cartoon model, I mean,

he looks more... You know like like a regular

person here It'd be like if you stood next to

prime and they looked at each other and said

hey you got a flat chest, too Probably be like

well, yeah, I've got you know a windshield. What

do you got? And he's like well I had the entire

cab of a truck for a chest, but now my You know

in the cartoon version. It's very flat. You can't

really see anything But you can still you know

you still see the wings in the cartoon version.

Yeah At least I got the head sculpt relatively,

right So, uh, no I don't expect him to look anything

like the cartoon version but I don't know I guess

I've just gotten so spoiled with ant with animated

looking so much like the Shows no, seriously.

I mean, you know, I mean retgar is probably the

most even though I don't have a record not that

I want him but He's probably the most show accurate

out of all the animated toys, the animated toy

line, but I mean, I don't know, I guess I just

get so used to that, you know, being... Well,

I don't think many of the G1 toys were really,

you know, show accurate. No, Heart Nod is. Prime

is. Not really. I mean if you take a g1 prime

and you look at like his arms Okay, the only

thing that's not accurate on him is the fact

that his back doesn't close a G1 prime. Yeah

and we're taking into account his arm sculpt

and Yeah, and it like is his waist He has no

crotch. What do you expect? It's a bumper Well,

I'm just saying, you know, I mean you look at

the cartoon. It's like well if you take a look

at some of the newer toys like the Japanese hybrid

style convoy, you know that That is a you know

a cartoon accurate toy. He looks well. Yeah even

the 20th anniversary prime a much bigger version

right looks like he did in the cartoon But if

you hold him up next to a g1 prime, they're they're

you know, completely different toys There's a

reason why they make a hybrid style convoy or

a 20th anniversary con or prime, you know a convoy

it's because He looks like he did in the cartoons.

Yeah Yes, I mean I think I I mean I'm not really

trying to review g1 prime because that's probably

what I'm gonna be talking about the next episode

of toy cast but I mean, I don't know, because

I have him sitting out here with his trailer

because I was ready to review him today. Other

than the fact that his doors on the back obviously

don't close because it's part of his arms. Right,

right. I think he's somewhat accurate. Well,

I mean, like I said, it's not... At least I got

the head right. I got the head right. Well...

I suppose but I mean I've got like kids books

from 1984 1985 where Prime looks like the toy

And it's really kind of neat to see prime looking

like that. It's like wow, you know It's like

it's almost like they sent the toy to the the

people who animated the kids book and they animated

from the toy And it's like, wow, that doesn't

really look like Prime at all. It's cool to see

them like that, but it's so cool. Well, the other

thing you've got to realize about G1 Prime, the

cartoon came after the toy. So they kind of modeled

the cartoon animation off the toy. If you take

a look at Ironhide and Ratchet, they had to do

something with those heads in the cartoons. They

gave them heads. They took a lot of liberties

with a lot of the toys. A lot of the toys didn't

have faces. They needed a head of some. If you

look at Bron, Bron has no face. Bron died and

then came back as a zombie. I pointed it out

in one of the TFG1 episodes. I think it was either

episode 18 or 19. There's a scene in the cartoon

after the movie where it shows up and it's Braun

firing on someone. Yeah, that was the stuff to

count side. It's something I know he was fighting

with the Decepticons on the on the Decepticon

side against the Autobots Yeah, anyway back to

octane. Yeah It's not gonna be show accurate,

but he does make a pretty good toy The this as

far as triple changers go he's he's a little

more Articulated I mean if you look at like blitzwing.

Yeah, his arms kind of pull out toward the front.

And that's about all for articulation he's got.

Whereas Octane here, I keep wanting to call him

Tank War, but Octane here, he's got shoulders,

he's got elbows, his legs are kind of a brick,

but he does have a knee of sorts. And when I

say knee, I mean that because You know, I can't

really get his legs to separate here. I hope

to God that's not coming through the mic, but

these fucking assholes, neighbors of mine, are

fucking setting off fireworks again. I'm gonna

have to call the police again. Oh, look at his

legs to separate. Okay, cool. He's got two separate

legs in there. And he's got somewhat of a waist.

You can kind of swivel his waist a little bit.

So I mean, as far as... Yeah, look at that. I

guess like separate it nice. So yeah, as far

as articulation goes I mean, he's he's pretty

good for a g1 Made him do the splits ladies and

gentlemen Well, I thought his legs were one big

solid piece But they but they pull out a little

bit. So there's a there's just a little bit of

a give in between so he's got like a You know

a crack Between his legs at least so it looks

like he's got two separate legs now, which is

nice But yeah, not a whole lot again not a whole

lot of articulation But at least he's got shoulders

and elbows he can he can raise his gun and you

know Kind of point that you can't really turn

it from side to side. I mean, this isn't an animated

toy here, you know, but But you know, he's got

some neat weapons the The rear stabilizing fin

of the jet mode actually spreads open in the

kind of a shield and if you really want to you

can close the fin back up and it kind of looks

like a rifle or a gun of some sort but but he's

got another gun that he holds in his other hand

big old gun big old rifle big purple one It's

a BFG, ladies and gentlemen, a big fucking gun.

So he's got a gun in one hand and a shield in

the other. But like I said, the top of the tanker

truck in tanker mode, tanker truck mode, the

big chrome one actually pops off and plugs onto

the side of his arm. So he's kind of already

got a shield on his arm. So I prefer to keep

his tail fin gun kind of in gun mode. So, I mean,

he's got a gun on both hands. He's a dangerous

guy. He's a two -fisted character. So, you'd

think he'd be like the fighting type, but his

tech spec actually says, no, he's not really

into the whole fight. He'd rather screw his buddies

out of Energon, which is interesting because

that kind of carries over into his cartoon personality.

He only had two episodes. but yeah he was he

was uh trying to out swindle the the swindle

he's like you know i bet i could screw people

over bigger than swindle could i'm gonna give

that a shot but so that earned him a uh a bounty

on his head yes that didn't work out too well

didn't work out in his favor no not at all but

uh yeah if you know if he had gotten killed then

that would have screwed up all of his chrome

and Yeah, you see I would be really interested

in seeing a reissue of him just to see one with

shiny brand -new chrome wings That would be awesome.

All you got to do is take off the gold chrome

wing from henkei henkei classics erotimus The

well it's that's interesting too because the

The Tankor that came out, he's got a lot of silver

paint that kind of emulates the chrome. Not exactly,

but he's got a lot of gray plastic and silver

paint on him. Whereas the Henkay, oddly enough,

did not go that route. I thought that he would

have a lot of chrome on him, but as it turns

out, it's just his guns. Which was unfortunate.

They really had a missed opportunity there. The

whole back of him could be... Well, Tankor, the

whole back of the truck... Well, it doesn't look

so much like a tanker truck anymore, but it looks

like a regular truck, like a transport. But the

whole back of it kind of pulls off into a weapon.

And instead of being a shield that fits on his

arm, like the G1 version, it opens up into big

jaws type of thing. with, like, teeth. And it

would have been really cool to have that entire

piece chromed. What they did is they only chromed

the hinge with the handle on it where he holds

onto it, and the rest is still just gray plastic.

Oh. Yeah, that would have been neat. It would

have been, you know, hearkening back to the G1

version. Yes. Do you have any... Do you want

a rate to this toy on a scale of one to ten?

To roll or do you want it actually, you know,

we it's hard to be objective Well, yeah, no,

I know but I mean we may actually start doing

a rating scale on toy cast I've been thinking

about this and I'm thinking of like You really

can't borrow toys from people these days, but

like By you know find new buy new whatever buy

use I don't know some sort of some sort of rating

scale as far as the toy goes Would totally get

one. No, I know but I mean as far as one year

old toys I know but I mean as far as recommending

it to the public, you know, if we're gonna talk

about eventually newer toys Yeah, not obviously

this episode but you know in the future. Oh,

yeah kind of think of a of an actual scale I

see so if I were to if I were to have reviewed,

you know titanium thrust, you know, who's still

sitting in a package on my desk Rather than a

20 year old toy then Would I buy him would I

recommend other people buy him? Yeah I would

I really like You know the the g1 octane I've

always liked him and I've always you know, I

really wanted what he was one of the last You

know of those those older ones that I got I mean

I've gotten all the ones for 1984 all the ones

from 1985 and almost 1986 But like the last two

to get from those three years were nah the Sharkticon

and Octane. It's really hard to find a gnaw who's

got all of the stickers and it's really hard

to find an Octane who's not scratched all to

hell and all of the stickers torn off. Well,

I think a lot of the older toys, the stickers

are really hard to... People took these things

in their sandboxes and their bathtubs and you

can tell a really loved toy, a well -loved toy.

But I've got one that apparently nobody loved

and left in a box. for a long time. And he looks

really good. And his chrome is in good shape,

and his stickers are in good shape. And I just

really, really like the way he looks. I think

he's terribly sharp. But if I were to recommend

someone go to buy him, number one, they have

a hard time. Number two, if they found a mint

in box, they'd be paying $500 for him. If they

went to a BotCon looking for one, they'd pay

even more because the prices are ridiculous.

Or they'd find one that was all chewed up. It's

hard to recommend someone to go get one. Now,

Classics Tankor on the other hand, he's a cool

toy. He's not, I will say subjectively, I don't

think he's as pretty. If he was all tricked out

in Chrome, I'd be like, heck yeah, he's awesome.

But as far as articulation goes, you can move

his head back and forth, you can move his shoulders,

he has full rotation for shoulders, full rotation

with ball joints at the elbows, his wrists turn,

his hips have a ball joint, he has knees, you

can articulate his feet a little bit here, he's

very, very posable. He's got, you know, spinning

propellers and, you know, he's just a head and

shoulders more, you know, I want to say a better

toy. He's got more play value, let's say. But

he's just not as pretty as G1 Octane. I mean,

G1 Octane is... He's got more detail molded into

him than your usual G1 toy, especially from that

year. There's a lot of detail molded in. He's

got like smokestacks and rivets and everything

molded directly into him. But he also has a lot

of sticker detail. He's got a lot of details

built into a lot of stickers. And nowadays, that's

all molded in. They don't use stickers so much,

or they'll use Tampa graphs, paint. But back

then, it was all stickers. Half the time, if

they could make their face a sticker, they probably

would. Yeah. I kind of like with ratchet and

iron hide. But yeah, I mean, I really, really

dig the old one. And the new one, I mean, if

you don't have one already, go get one, because

he's just sharp. They both are really cool toys.

But then again, I could almost say the same for

all the classics toys. I mean, they really did

a really good job with making the classics toys.

They're very, very posable. They look fantastic

in vehicle mode in tank worst case both of his

vehicle modes Probably the plane mode more so

than the truck mode. Mm -hmm But I mean, yeah,

there's a lot of play value there. They're very

posable and You know, you can do a lot more than

with them than you could be all the old g1 counterparts

Yeah All right. Well, that sounds pretty good.

I think we're gonna take a break really quick

I'm gonna probably play some toy ads and we'll

be right back The Transformers! More than meets

the eye! Autobots wage their battle to destroy

the evil forces of the Decepticons! The Transformers!

More than meets the eye! The Transformers! Robots

in disguise! Attack the Autobot commander! Call

in the Decepticon leader! The Transformers! More

than meets the eye! The Transformers. From Hasbro.

Alright, we're back and I am going to be talking

about G1 Hot Rod. This was my holy grail for

a long time. When I was younger, I had Rodimus.

I had the Rodimus Prime when it first came out.

I don't have him now, but I had him then. And

I always wanted the Hot Rod and my mom would

never get him for me. I actually found this one

on eBay for 85 bucks plus shipping. Which...

isn't bad considering what most G1 figures go

for. Well, he had the box too, right? Yeah, but

it wasn't like it wasn't like it had foam or

anything in it. It was just the box. Right, but

I mean, you know, when I think of a loose toy,

it could have possibly been in the sandbox. It

could have been in the bathtub. It could have

been at the bottom of the toy box getting all

scraped up and mutilated. But when I see a toy

with a box with it, then I know that a collector

had that, and he kept it safe in the box. The

only thing that I'm very confused about, and

maybe the goddamn proto -man, which hopefully

he will listen to this show, can explain this

to me, since he is a Rodimus fanboy, on mine,

for some odd reason, I don't know if it's coloration

or whatever, on the side panels of where his

doors are supposed to be or whatever, the flame

is not red, it's purple, and I have no idea why.

Yeah. So, you know, we were talking earlier about

this and I've got two. I've got one with metal

toes and one with black toes. And my metal toe

one has red and yellow stickers on the doors

and the one with the plastic toes has purple

and yellow stickers on the doors. I have the

one with the plastic toes as well. So I mean,

is that just a plastic toe thing or is it maybe

we both of us just happen to have a toy with

plastic toes that has discoloration on the side?

There's no discoloration on the chest. No, there

isn't. The chest looks fine on mine too, yeah.

It's just the sticker. Yeah, it's a giant flame.

Yeah, so I don't know. And actually, surprisingly,

I haven't re - I used to pay attention to this

a lot when I was a kid, but I haven't paid attention

to it since I started collecting these things

again. My rub signs. Pretty much almost every

figure that has a rub sign on it, they work.

They do work or they don't work? They do work.

Well, they're supposed to. Well, I'm you know,

these are what 25 26 year old toys, you know,

I mean I'm sorry. I just put my finger on it.

Yeah, I know I Do like him I like him a lot I

thought he was actually bigger as far as lengthwise,

but he's not as far as his car mode goes um but

overall i like him i think the only thing i don't

like about him is the fact that the back of his

head is the engine block because i just looked

at him in uh in uh in robot mode and i took a

picture of it and uh it um his head looks super

weird from the back i don't i i took a picture

with my iphone so i can't actually send it to

you but i can look at it um And it just I don't

know with the with his feet, you know And then

the the obviously the back part is flipped up

so the wings can you know, you know be in in

the right place and His head it just the back

of his head because it's the engine block. It

just looks weird. I Don't know why it just does

Just looking at my plastic toed Rodimus and I

think this one might be a No a target master,

oh really because his hands well the thing about

the target master and this is just what I've

read I don't actually own the target master version,

which is why I'm looking at these going I wonder

if this one's a target master, but I know that

the target master had the fist holes Increase

in diameter so that he could hold the target

master. Yeah, and I know on my metal toad version

The gun fits very snugly in his in his grip in

my plastic toad version The gun does not fit

very snugly in this grip see my guns is because

I you know when you're when you were talking

about octane Earlier in this episode. I was in

the middle of transforming this from car to robot

I have the guns sitting right here next to me

because they were in the box the the gray Photon

guns or whatever the hell they're fucking called

And I did put them in his hands and they were

very I mean they were tight in his hands I mean,

I had to actually pull it to get it out. Yeah,

and like I said, I have the plastic toe version.

So I I don't know Fairly certain there is no

metal toed version of the target master No, um,

you know like I said before I One of the reasons

why this was my holy grail for a long time obviously

because I liked erotimus in the hot rod slash

erotimus in the movie and I wanted to see How

cool that the the toy was gonna be? And I never

actually got the hot rod version. I had the erotimus

with the trailer That you know the trailer folded

out and kind of like the optimus, you know trailer

folds out the g1 prime trailer Don't even compare.

No, I'm not I'm not comparing Rodimus to the

I'm not comparing g1 Rodimus to the g1 optimus

I'm comparing the trailers because they both

fold out. That's it They both have a trailer

and that's about where the similarities end.

No They both have a trailer that Once you open

it, the sides fold down and a gun comes up. You

cannot deny that that is not a similarity. Yeah,

okay, fine. Okay, that's all I was saying. You

fucking Rodimus hater. I never liked Rodimus,

and you know what killed me? I'm a kid looking

at the catalog saying, I want this one, and I

want this one, and I want this one. I look at

Rodimus, and I look at Hot Rod, and I'm thinking

to myself, That's pretty much the same toy. Maybe

this is his dad. Not knowing that they were going

to kill off Optimus Prime and replace him with

his schmo. Oh lord. Here we go. More angsty childhood

memories coming up on Transformers Toycast here.

I almost said TFG1 Podcast. This is not TFG1

Podcast. This is Transformers Toycast. There's

more Rodimus hating than meets the eye. Oh God

that deserves this Exactly you're lucky I don't

see the headshot stuff in here Yes, I did and

then now it's not handy now But I mean the trailers

they are similar I don't care what you say they

are But I mean, you know, I don't know I I really

enjoy this take a drink who me or you It was

a drinking game every time you say I don't know

I get shut the hell up You should take a drink

every time I play that Daffy clip and I'll play

it You know I like this figure I actually You

know for it being the g1 figure that it is I

like it but as far as an overall Rodimus figure

hot rod figure whatever I actually I would like

to get a I Would like to get my hands on a copy

of the or not copy but a figure of the nk Classics

hot rod or Rodimus Because he is he is very Very

accurate to this. I mean he's a little bit longer

than than this obviously but In the car mode,

but he looks super super cool And I the only

reason why I like the US version of the classics

round of this is because he has a purple missile

for Christ sakes You know, I've got what's I

didn't think to drag out my classics version

he's a he's in like the display cabinet i can't

i can't even see him from here but it's but your

glasses on no well see that yeah he's in a cabinet

that is uh... on the lower cabinets it's a little

dark so unless i have the lights turned on in

there it's hard to hard to see him that for me

you don't keep the lights on in the cabinets

all the time no it gets warm that way i don't

want to do that i have a question um... i mean

i know a lot of the the figures now use translucent

windows like The like the translucent blue on

on gold bug or not gold bug elite guard bumblebee

This looks like it's translucent blue and I can

almost see seats in there Do you think that's

what that is or am I just imagining things? No,

it is translucent. There's little chairs there.

I wasn't sure but there's no steering wheel How

am I supposed to drive the fucking car if there's

no steering wheel? Did he have a steering wheel

in the curtain? It kind of looks like he's got

just like a little computer there instead of

a steering display Well, he had a steering wheel

in in reap the movie. Well, I was gonna say rebirth

Oh Say it you already went oh wow, you might

as well As soon as you as soon as you say something

on any of our podcasts, you have to finish the

thought And I looked through his little windshield.

You can still see through the windshield. But

in order to transform him, you have to swirl

the hood completely around. And it just looked

different. I thought, oh, wait a minute. Maybe

I can see the steering wheel. But no, you can't

really. I can see something in there. Maybe it

is a computer. I don't know. I see some sort

of monitor on the driver's side. Yeah. It's like

mini teletrans. Tell it ran point five Tell it

ran like Overall I really enjoy this figure I

didn't realize how short he was gonna be when

I first got him cuz you know, I mean You know

we as transformers fans often want to see the

stuff that's in the cartoons be his toys and

And be the same virtually the same size Well,

obviously not true to scale because I mean it'd

be not life -sized versions, but I mean scale

enough to the animated model So I don't know

I would like to compare him though. No, I'm not

taking a drink shut up I've well on my shelf

if you stand them all next to each other. He's

the same height as Springer and sandstorm and

nah Yeah, yeah, he's about the same size as you

know those characters I mean if you stand them

up next to You know ultra Magnus or any of the

combiners or even retgar, you know, he might

be a little short well But for the most part,

you know, he's on par with a lot of those same

size class figures. Yeah. Yeah, actually, I pulled

up a picture of the someone had taken pictures

at BotCon this year of the new or supposedly

new version of Rodimus and well, it's actually

called Rodimus Minor, unfortunately. Is that

the TFA? Yeah, the animated version. I just want

to compare it to G1 because I'm looking at this.

I'm looking at my G1 with the spoiler. And I'm

looking at the picture of the animated version.

And the animated version is slightly wider on

the actual wingtips as far as the wingspan. It's

wider, obviously, because the toy is wider. But

the blue is almost the same. It's more translucent

on the animated figure though. And the wheels

are more pronounced. I think, I'm not really

sure. I think they have some sort of weird gimmick

with the animated, the yet to be released animated

figure of where to put his engine block. Because

if you look at that picture, and I can send it

to you eventually. Yeah, I don't think I have

that picture. I've seen it. I don't have it in

front of me right now. Well, if you look at it.

Indeed I should. Hold on. Wait, wait, wait. I'm

losing my mind here. We're having recording issues

because I can't find the right frickin' window.

Doh! God, I wish I had Homer's doh right about

now. But anyway, here. There it is. But anyway,

I think there's some sort of gimmick with the

engine block to where it tucks away somewhere.

Because if you look at the chest in the robot

form, It has the Autobot symbol on it instead

of the head and I don't know what the back of

his head is gonna look like but it doesn't look

like in the car mode that the That the the engine

block becomes is the back of its head like in

this one No, it looks to me like the engine block

just flips around and there's an Autobot symbol

behind it, right? But where would they put that

on the? You know how this one you can pull the

hood out and flip it around and flip the head

around the swivel bar Yeah, no, I think the way

that Transformers animated Rodimus or hot rods

Rodimus minor is gonna transform is that Yeah,

the whole chest area is gonna end up being What's

behind it though, that's what I'm saying. What's

going to be behind that? Is there going to be

a special compartment? No, that's probably where

his head goes. In vehicle mode. And then when

he becomes a robot, that area will be vacated.

His head won't be there anymore. Even though

we're kind of getting off the topic of g1 hot

rod, but it just looking at this at this animated

figure They did an awesome job with this mold

Yeah, it looks like they they kept the translucent

plastic windshield He still got the crest except

it's gold now, but it looks really nice a little

really nice with the gold flames they kept the

the three exhaust pipes and it looks like I Was

gonna say it looks like the exhaust pipes are

still on his arms But no, I think the exhaust

pipes are going to end up on his legs. No, they're

on his arms. I can't see him. Let me see if I

have a better picture. I don't know if I do.

Oh, I see. It looks like his tail lights are

actually his shoulders. So yeah, it's possible.

Here, look at this. But there's a lot of molded

detail in there. Here, look at this one. This

is an up close version of the robot mode. Sending

me a new picture. You can clearly see in that

that the pipes are on his arms. If you look at

his right arm, you can see the pipe. And it's

downloading very slowly. Well, that's probably

because we're recording Transformers Toycast

Episode 7. Yeah, we're eating up all that internet.

All that fine, fine bandwidth. Let's take a look.

Oh, OK. See? See on the right shoulder. Or not

the right shoulder, but the right forearm. I

see it. Yeah. Yeah, he looks he looks really

good there. He his head looks awesome That's

a good sculpt. I like how his his forearms are

kind of sculpted So, I mean it's it's not like

he's just got you know bricks for arms. Yeah

Yeah, no in this picture you can actually see

where the engine block Square is or it would

just flip around there'd be an Autobot insignia

under it and it looks like the insignia is molded

Yeah, no, it's it's molded which a majority of

the Autobots insignias on the TFA toys are molded

aren't they? Yeah, so that's well I was gonna

point out shockwave how he's got the molded insignia

on his chest that flips around Doesn't count

he should always be shockwave fuck long arm Well

on my purple one is always shockwave, but my

gray one is always I don't I don't want I don't

want a gray one I just want the purple one. That's

all I am I mean I have the purple one, but I

mean I'm never buying the the the gray version

Sorry, I'm just not So overall if you can find

him G1 version of hot rod I would recommend that

someone get them get him if you're obviously

a fan of of the character or if you're a fan

of Of him at all. I would find him I was actually

very surprised that I found him for $85 in box

with instructions and guns That was very surprising

to me because normally when I was buying and

originally buying my transformers I spent on

three different figures I spent three hundred

dollars a piece and I've said this before and

people know this but I don't really care. Actually

it's funny my I was actually very shocked the

the optimist prime that I have I got him for

a hundred and twenty five fifty and that's very

very rare because every time I look now it's

like three four five hundred dollars thousand

dollars for any G1 primes. But overall, outside

of the purple flame issue on the arm door slash

panel thingies, I really enjoy this figure. He's

super awesome. I almost wish I had a Cyclonus

to go with him. G1 Cyclonus, that's a sharp figure

too. He's a bit of a brick, but he looks nice.

G1 Cyclonus is a bit of a brick? How do you figure?

Well, let me look at my cyclone. I'm going to

stare right at him here. I'll tell you. But yeah,

I mean, as I was saying before, a lot of these

G1 figures didn't have a whole lot of articulation.

So if you look at like Broadside, he's literally

one solid piece except for his arms. And they

move forward. It's not a ball joint. It's just

a hinge that goes forward. That's it. The same

thing could be said for a sandstorm. He's barely

got arms at all and all they do is move forward

on a hinge or a swivel. And that's it. Whereas

with, well, if you look at Octane, he's got shoulders

that swivel forward and he's got elbows that

swivel forward. And that's pretty much what you

got with Cyclonus. He's got shoulders that swivel

forward and from there the elbows give it a little

bit more range of motion. He doesn't really have

much in the way of leg articulation. The majority

of the articulation goes into the bits that move

in order to transform. Yeah, but I mean, he's

not specifically on... I'm talking about his

jet mode is not a brick. You can't class... It's

just like... It's just like Astrotrain. Do you

want Astrotrain? Do you want Astrotrain is far

from... Brick, I mean yeah his his legs don't

don't move all that you know much to pose them

or whatever But his arms move. I don't think

his head moves, but you know I mean, I don't

know whatever it doesn't really matter Well,

do you want astrotrain at least has like a ball

joint at the shoulder? Yeah, that's true So he's

got a range of motion at the shoulder, but he

doesn't have elbows. Well. No that's good His

arms are like an inch and a half long. What do

you expect? Also, I'm saying a lot of these older

the older g1 toys didn't have much in the way

of limbs I mean if you if you look at like g1

hound, where are his arms? I mean, it's like

little nubs that hang out underneath his fenders

They barely they you can barely pull them off

far enough to fit his gun into one of them Yeah,

so I mean, there's not a whole lot of articulation

here compared to the newer toys. Yeah compared

to any toys actually Yeah, it's like, uh, okay,

you've got the and the my little ponies who had

no articulation Okay, okay on that note. I think

we're gonna end this episode because we don't

want to go too far into girl toys Thank you very

much. This is ace ace specifically boys toy cast

Specifically transform oh, yeah But yeah, I To

digress, I dig the G1 Hot Rod toy. And to kind

of tie that into the point I was trying to make

before, G1 Hot Rod does have kind of a shoulder

joint. It swivels a little bit. He's got an elbow.

And just above the elbow, there's actually a...

A swivel joint so he can move his arms out even

more. He's kind of it's almost if it was on his

wrist I would say it was the kung fu battle grip

But it's not it's above it's above the elbow

instead You know and his I don't want to say

his legs movie doesn't really have any knee joints

or anything But but you know if you move his

toes a little bit he could tilt back If you really

handle he's kind of got Tim Burton Batman head,

you know in the sense He can't really turn his

head from side. Oh, okay. I was gonna say wait

I was gonna say wait a minute since when did

Batman have a engine block on the back of his

head? But you're talking about the fact that

he can't move his head Okay, he can't move his

head from side to side But but if he wanted to

he could he could tilt his toes just enough to

look Yeah He wanted to see over him. He can actually

look down because his whole neck's on a swivel.

I was gonna say something about that just now

and you're talking about the head not being turned

side to side. You can actually have the head

and the chest piece swivel around the bar. So

it's kind of like he's swinging. He can kind

of look down a little. Yeah. But no, he can't

really look up. He's got that Batman head. But

I mean, as far, you know, you know, I, you know,

I see YouTube reviews and stuff like that about

people complaining about robot kibble and, you

know, fine. I'm sorry. If you have a toy that's

a car that transforms into a robot and you set

the car down and you're playing with the car.

I mean, like mine, my wheels on on my G1 hot

rod work fine. I mean, he rolls very he doesn't

like he's not going to like roll off the desk.

I mean, I can just like pull him towards me and.

It's a little tight. Well, at least he does move,

at least. But they roll. Yeah, no, it's a good

car. But, I mean, you don't see any of the robot

things unless you actually pick him up and look

at him upside down. So, you know, I don't know.

I don't have a problem so much with Robot Kibble

as much as I have a problem with Car Kibble when

he's in robot mode. Like, if you look at the,

uh... Robots in disguise toys, which you know

all of the car robots in Japan and they came

to America and they were robots robots in the

skies They're all X Bron has an engine block

for an army They're awesome awesome toys I mean

they they were the first of the new car toys

to come to America and They they transformed

into licensed very very well done vehicles The

toys looked very nice and they were completely

articulate. They have shoulders and elbows and

hips and knees and ankle joints and for the most

part a lot of them have swivels at the wrists.

The heads move back and forth and they're just

amazing toys with lots of play value. I can overlook

the fact that he's got a ninja block for his

arm or that he's got a bumper hanging off his

shoulder. I can overlook the fact it's okay.

Especially when you look at some of the G1 toys

and the parts that were of their vehicle that

didn't really fit in robot mode, those became

accessories that you just set aside and then

you would lose them. If you look at the G1 Octane,

the reason why the back of his tanker truck was

always lost is because You know, it looked good

in tanker mode, but nobody ever kept him in tanker

mode They want to keep him in robot mode or jet

mode and what happens in jet mode? Well, you

just set this piece aside And then it disappears

forever. You never find it again, especially

if you're in a sandbox or something You're never

gonna find that piece again. Yeah, that's why

I keep my g1 prime trailer right next to my G1

framed animation cells below where my actual

transformers are. Like I have G1 Prime in his

robot mode so I have him standing next to when

he's in the other room on the shelf. I have him

standing next to Galvatron and G1 eHobby Galvatron

and Universe Cyclonus. And I have the trailer

underneath, you know, on its wheels, obviously,

right next to my G1 screenshots or animated cells,

animation cells. So that's why, you know, I always

know where the trailers are. Yeah, well, I mean,

the Prime trailer is pretty big. You're not so

much going to lose that, but things like, you

know, you look at Whirl. G1 world the the helicopter

and he had like four guns and It's hard to find

one with all four guns because you know, they

don't they don't barely do well, you know You

can actually fit two of them on his struts in

in You know helicopter mode and but he can only

carry to get two at a time in view and robot

mode and even then it's hard because he doesn't

really have hands so You know, it's really easy

to lose those whereas, you know the newer toys

they try to find someplace to put the weapons

You know, I mean, I got pretty ridiculous in

Beast Wars because their weapons became like

their tail But at least you had somewhere to

stow them. I didn't like every time I see Beast

Wars toys. I cringe I'll okay. I love I really

enjoyed Beast Wars and I love Beast Machines

the cartoons, but the toys. Oh my god That's

that's a topic for another show. Um, I think

we're gonna play I think we're gonna play a couple

of hot rod versus clips We're gonna play hot

rod versus Galvatron and then I'm gonna play

the Hot rod and cup shark to con battle and then

we're gonna come back for the closing Well, that

was a lot of explosions, wasn't it? Yeah, I was

about to say, oh, cool, it's Judd Nelson in the

letter Nimoy, and then boom. Well, it was in

the beginning. A lot of screeching tires. I was

expecting you to take that all the way out. No,

no, no, no, that's a completely different clip.

I didn't want to have it go that long. but uh...

this next clip i think is of the full uh... hot

rod shakti khan uh... battle actually it starts

before they even drop into the pit so here is

that before his imperial majesty delivers a verdict

would you like to bid for your lives it sometimes

helps but not often i can't transform Silence,

or you will be held in contempt of this court.

I have nothing but contempt for this court. Guilty

or innocent? Innocent. They've got more shark

pecans than we have photon charges. Then let's

hold a demolition, Davey. that uh... that was

very very epic and i did cut it short a little

bit because obviously that's not it's no more

battle uh... are you even still there i fell

asleep uh... and it's not as i woke up a little

bit snarl kicked in that excuse me i wonder what

i wonder where that camera was when grimlock

was starling at the shark to conan you can see

from outside it from the inside of his mouth

outside That was a very brave wheelie sitting

next to his tongue. He's sitting there with a

camera going, don't eat me! He couldn't even

rhyme. He's just like, fucking don't eat me,

man! That's funny as hell. So I have been TFD1

Mike with... Michael Wilson. And this has been

Transformers Toycast, episode 7. Until next time.
